I haven't been around in awhile, I've just been enjoying my XBMC! However, I do have a couple of nagging problems that hopefully someone can help me with:
1. Sometimes DVDs just look too wide. Like they are stretched or something. None of the video aspect ratio changes really helps. The last one I tried to watch was "For a Few Dollars More" and it was so bad I couldn't go on. Can I get clarity on a couple of questions:
1a. I have an Infocus 4805. I should have the xbox dash (OEM) set with the Video at 480p "Widescreen", right?
1b. I should set my XBMC aspect to display "Original", right? This will send the purest signal, I assume
1c. I rip my DVDs to .iso using DVD Decrypter and stream 'em over the network.
1d. The why do many (most) DVDs look too stretched out?
2. Many of my DVD .isos also "skip" from time to time, enough to make the wifey want to go back to DVDs. It's not really a stuttering, it's more like XBMC will randomly skip ahead 20-30 seconds. If it does skip and then I jump back, it'll usually skip in the same place. It's not necessarily at a scene change, either, where the vob files would change. However, if it does skip, and I let the video play forward 5-10 seconds and then jump back 30 seconds, it'll usually resume playing with no more skipping. Come to think of it, this has happened with Xvids, too. Any ideas? Is it a cache setting?
Has anyone put out a "worksheet" that would just tell me what to set everything at for optimum video quality? It seems like sometimes, there is just too much adjustibility in XBMC.
I do love streaming, though! I just installed my XIR Easy IR kit and it rocks. For those having problems getting the Harmony Remotes to work with it, here's what I did and it works fine: I mapped the command to "Turn Off" the XBMC to "Power Toggle" on the Harmony (that's always worked fine for me). It took me awhile to figure out that you map the command to "Turn On" the XBMC to "Enter" on the Harmony. In other words, when your Harmony macro goes to "turn on" the XBMC, it sends the native command "enter" to get it to turn on. Works like a dream.
Hey, thanks in advance for any help.
Please help me save my video settings
I soft modded with the Ndure Unleash process and I am using XBMC as my default dashboard but I am not able to change my video settings to 16x9 720p. It is currently set to 4x3. I tried fixing the problem by going to the MSDash from Unleash menu and update my video settings and restart but when I go to XBMC I only have 4x3 and in MSDash the settings are back to 480i 4x3.
Please help...Thx
Scotty6595 01-24-07, 10:14 PM I think what is happening is that your hard drive is locked in Unleash which will not allow anything to be saved to your eeprom (Thats your basic MS Xbox settings). This is normal because we wouldn't want anything bad being written to your eeprom. Go into Unleash and into settings and find the setting that says lock/unlock hardrive or something to the effect of that. Choose to unlock, then boot up MS Dash and change your video settings to whatever you want them to be. Save, exit and boot back into XBMC and change your settings there, that should do it. If it does, make sure to go back and lock your hard drive!

1a.Set the Infocus to 16:9 aspect ratio. I would enable 480p/720p/1080i in the original xbox dashboard. However, in XBMC, I'd set the main user interface to either 720p or 480p (720p is still very much usable even on this projector). For video playback in xbmc, I would probably set video to switch to NTSC 16:9 for DVD watching so the 4805 can deinterlace dvd.
1b. I'd recommend setting xbmc to "Normal" for most movies. For non-anamorphic widescreen movies, you will need to use the "Zoom" mode. I have the For A Few Dollars More dvd, and it is non-anamorphic. It doesn't seem stretched to me, you should be seeing black bars above and below the movie as it is in 2.35:1 aspect ratio. If your picture is extra wide, I have a feeling you may have XBMC set to 4:3 480i/480p (this is set separate from the dash).
2. Many of my DVD .isos also "skip" from time to time, enough to make the wifey want to go back to DVDs. It's not really a stuttering, it's more like XBMC will randomly skip ahead 20-30 seconds. Hey, thanks in advance for any help.
Try messing around with your network video cache settings under the system settings menu. Maybe try keeping it in the lower range or set it to 0.
Ok, thanks for that.
First, I set the network video cache to zero. We'll try that for awhile and see how that goes.
You're right about the video being set to NTSC 4:3. I just bought a new Onkyo TX-SR504 and was trying to run my component thru it, but for some reason, the Xbox wasn't putting out an HD signal. Once I connected my HD pack direct to the 4805 and reset the dashboard, everything is back to normal there.
I went ahead and set my XBMC settings so that it would default to 720p (instead of 480p) and now menus are a little more readable.
I tried setting my default video playback to NTSC 16:9, but I couldn't get the picture to fill up the screen.
However, when I switched default video playback to 16:9 480p, the aspect ratios (defaults) seemed to change a bit and I was able to get "For a Few Dollars More" to look well. I think I'll roll with what I have right now.
I have some questions about all of the other video setting tweaks and what they should be set at, but I just shut down the PJ for the night so I can't read them off to you. Maybe tomorrow.
One last bugaboo: I'm now running TOSLINK out of my HDTV adapter and there are some problems with the XBMC volume control not working on movies. AND the movie default volume is very soft. So now I have to crank up the reciever which nearly shatters the windows next time I switch on the XBMC...
Thanks for your help, once again, Ja Phule.

Yeah, I think the 4805 doesn't seem to fill the screen all the way at 480i. The overscan setting may also be on at 480i to further add to the screen not filling up all the way.
Make sure in xbmc you set the audio output to digital and not analog under your audio hardware settings. I feel the audio is quite loud, I have the xbmc internal volume at around -9.6db for videos.

If your movie has a dolby digital or dts track (and you've set the audio in xbmc to output digital) you shouldn't even be able to control the volume with XBMC.
If your movie has a dolby digital or dts track (and you've set the audio in xbmc to output digital) you shouldn't even be able to control the volume with XBMC.
And that's what's happening. I can (obviously) control the volume with my reciever, but the volume control in XBMC does not work.
The problem arises in some movies (For a Few Dollars More... which seems to be my test) is that I have to turn up the receiver to 65 or so to get decent volume. After the movie's over, I turn off the receiver, come back the next day, and turn on the receiver and XBMC, the startup sound nearly blows out my windows and the receiver protection circuit kicks in.
It's not something that can be fixed in the receiver, because all sound out of the xbox is going into the receiver through TOSLINK.
I suppose worst case scenario is that I can set my Harmony remote to turn down the reciever volume before shutting it down, but that seems like a hack.
Sorry if this is getting OT...
The best idea, once you learn to edit the sources XML is to put in all the usual shares you use (or subfolders however you want to do it) and nix all the presets you have no use for. That way when you go to Video from the home screen you might see:
Cartoons
Movies and Film
Television Pre-2000
Television 2000-Present
Home Movies
Recent Downloads
Server Main Folder
Network Explorer
Local XBox HardDrive
Local Xbox DVD Drive
That makes it really easy. Even my wife can do it! Then I only use the network options to find stuff that isn't in a main shared folder on some odd occasion when I need it. I also keep that Workgroup option in each category so I can do this easily on any of my systems. I think there is also a way to aggregate the contents of 2 network shares to appear as a single option and folder within XBMC although I've never used it.
Uh... in your "Recent Downloads" subfolder, is that like a "smart" folder? OR do you just leave recent downloads in there for awhile and then move them into a more organized fashion. If I could set my XBMC to somehow display either files added in the last 7-14 days, or the last 10 added files, then the wifey would be REALLY pleased. Sometimes its hard to keep track of everything...

If you unlock a soft modded xbox it will not boot and you will be left with a dead box that will need the HD removed and put into a PC to be fixed...
The problem of only 4x3 is MS dash is most likely caused by el cheapo HD Video pack. This has been seen many many times by users here and xbox scene...

So does volume work for none DTS and non dolby digitial sources... you can control the volume with the right analog thumbstick. Over toslink there is no volume on DTS and DD from XBMC...

Thanks to everyone for their input but I found the problem. I found this on the Ndure softmod site and it actually works...
*******
A: This is caused by a safety protection called Virtual EEPROM. In order to make your settings "stick" do this.
QUOTE
1. Create a file in the root of the E:/ drive and title it "EEPROM_off.bin" without the quotes. It can be any size.
2. After creating the file, manually reboot your Xbox by powering it off then back on by using the power button.
3. When the softmod loads back up, there will be no virtual EEPROM protection, so you can change your video settings and they should stick from now on.

Next time I will make sure I do a better job of reading the FAQ.

I had the same issue. My way around this was to set up my own RSS feed and update it as I copy files across. This way when XBMC boots you get an RSS feed of what you have recently transferred across - unfortunately it is a manual process but it only takes maybe two minutes each time.
I did look for an automated way however came up empty when using a Windows envirnoment - I believe there are scripts that can be used under linux platforms.

Perhaps it can be fixed in the receiver. Onkyo TX-SR800 has an option for setting a default power-on volume level. (Don't remember what it's called; I'm not a t home.) It can't be that rare. Check your manual.

I have no issues with my Dolby Digital and DTS sound coming from toslink with XBMC. I would suggest you try another movie as For A Few Dollars More is a much older movie and it is only in DD2.0. My normal XBMC sound is quite loud though, for music and other sound, I have the audio volume at -9.6db in audio settings and music mp3 at 80db in XBMC in order to avoid the louder sound.
jwheeler 01-27-07, 01:10 PM Wondering if anyone could give me the quick and dirty on the easies way to map my music, vid, pictures and so on with my puter. In the past I have just browsed to the shared folders where said items are but I would like to just get there when I choose music or pics in XBMC. I have been messing around with the UpnP but cant get it to work. One problem may be that I have Verizon FIOS and and Actiontec router that may be blocking. Not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Here is the easy way but you have to do this each time you do a clean upgrade/install of XBMC. For example: Go to My Music, browse to the folder where you keep your music, do not open this folder... Hit the white button on your controler... You will see a context menu with the option to Add Source or Make Default, something like that... click it and now your My Music will automatically open to that folder and its contents... I think you can do this for multiple folder and XBMC will combine the contents of these folders as if all of them were under one folder...
Or you could edit your sources.xml file and just ftp this over to your xbox each time you upgrade... I have an example of that a page or two back in this thread.
Hope this helps!

Ok I tried for instance browsing to the folder where my music is and without opening and i hit the white button and i think i get everything but add source or context or make default. I get other things that would not be anything i could add a folder with.
I guess i will have a look at editing the xml but i havent done this before so i have some learning. Thanks for the help though.

Scotty6595 01-28-07, 04:35 PM What version of XBMC do you have? Depending on how old your version is you may not have the option to set your sources in the context menu.
By the way, did you browse to you media like this... For example: My Music > Root Directory > SMB Share or Workgroup Share > Your Computer Name > Your Music Folder? This is the only way I see the option in the context menu to add a source. You cannot do it by going to Files and then browsing. You have to go through a Media tab..ie, My Music, My Videos, My Pictures..
If you decide to to the sources.xml route I can give you a copy of mine and you can edit. It is actually very simple to do and takes 5 minutes... By the way if you have an older version of XBMC the sources.xml file is called xboxmediacenter.xml. I would suggest upgrading to at least 2.0.1 as it is a very stable release.

I would love a copy of the xml to see how it is done. For my setup I hae to goto the smb share/network name/computer on network name/ music drive/music folders i.e. jazz/pop/ etc....
I am using 2.0.1 so do have the other options, though I'm not yet a fan of this setup, esp where my video's are concerned.
Also, on 2.0.1 I've noticed it now takes over 90 seconds to load my music page where before it was about 15 or so. I have under 2k albums on the server, so it's not all that large. Something definately changed in the new xbmc that is really slowing things down. Heck I even noticed dvd scenes that pan stuttering for the first time after upgrading. I'm almost set on screwing the new vs. and just reverting back.
Jeffrey Ropp 01-31-07, 01:42 PM Newbie here....
I've been reading Walter Cedric's guide on the whole process.
Does anyone have a recommendation on how-to guide that is updated with specific on what version of XBOX to buy, mod chip selection, etc.
Many thanks for your help getting me started (and sorry for the newbie questions!)

jwheeler 01-31-07, 05:54 PM I have been using my modded xbox with XBMC now for a couple of years. Is the Xbox 360 just as good or better a media extender as XBMC on a modded xbox? Im thinking about MS Vista and an xbox360.

Not even close! I have a 360 sitting on my rack collecting dust...lol I have Media Center on my PC and ever once and a while I will think I should hook it all up and give it another shot and every time I end up being pissed for wasting a half a day on that crippled XBMC wanna be product.
The 360 supports .mpg, .wmv and thats about it. You can use transcode 360 but it is a bear to get working. Unless Vista will allow for more codecs I wouldn't waste my time.
Of course this is just my own opinion based on my own experiences.
speed32219 02-01-07, 10:20 AM Ja Phule, I wish you would remove the links in your signature. (NOT!)
I bought the 4805 18 months ago based upon your (And CAVU) posts and I am still in love with it. I went to click on your 4805 faq to check something out and instead I hit your "MY DVD Server" link. And one week later here I am buying an XBOX for use as a video server. You are costing me $$$, but don't fret, it is fun money and inexpensive. :)
I followed your links and downloaded DVD profiler and DVDprofiler2Xbmc (Thank you for the program). I have installed them on my XP based PC and using DVD profiler I started creating the DVD info and cover images. (It takes some time since it needs to go to an external site to get the info) I then exported that created DVD info in DVD Profiler to an XML file and loaded the newly created XML into dvdprofiler2xbmc and it works great.
SOftmaoded the Xbox and I am now up and running with even the weather channel info. Actually, looks identical to your setup. :D Now, I have created a file folder on my XP based machine (Soon moving to a Linux based video server) named Movie Icons and I am moving all the created IMG's (Icons) there. So now when I select My Video's from the XBMC dashboard it takes me directly to that folder and displays the thmbnail images of the movies. (That is freakin awesome and I have it working with the muxic and picture file folders too)
What I need to know is how do you link those images to the actual movie file that I have created in a seperate movie directory, to execute the movie playback?
I have read the XBMC manual and it states in many places that it is supported but no links, examples or "how to" tutorials.
glennvc 02-01-07, 10:58 AM First of, this is an excellent thread and it has convinced me to go ahead and take the plunge myself. However, before I take the plunge I'd like to make sure that what I need most will work as expected. I hope that the specialists here can make sure I am not dissapointed.
Since this tread is exceptionally long and over a long time period, these question may be have already been answered. However, things seem to change by every version so for the novice it is often difficult to keep up with current state of affairs...
1. From what I read, the easiest way to work is to use iso's. No problem for me but what I need most is to be able to use menu's so I can select sound options and subtitles. Will this work?
2. Will I be able to use FFW/RWD? If so, is the FFW/RWD limited to 2x or can you go faster?
3. Does skipping ahead/back (5m, 30m) work? Chapters?
4. Time jump?
5. Is there a difference between version of the XBOX? I.e. are some versions better then other.
6. With a good quality adaptor and optical connection can I use DTS? I have a Denon 3805 AV
7. I'm very confused when it comes to formats. There seems to be a consensus that you need to switch down to 480i which seems a bit low for my Panasonic 42" Plasma. What quality of picture can I expect connected through component in comparison to a good quality DVD player connected in the same way?
8. With the IR kit, can I use a programmable remote like the Phillips Pronto series to control the unit, including on/off? Menu control, etc...?
9. Does anyone have a good solution to remotely control the XBOX placed in a closet?
I apologize for the lenght of the post and for the newbee questions. Just want to get it right this time after the dissapointment of the D-Link DSM 520...
Many thanks!
Best,
Glenn

Best,
Glenn
Glen.
1. Yes. The .iso is a virtual dvd its just like you put the disc in the player
2. Sort of. Its not the smoothest scrolling but it does work and it will go quite fast.
3. Yes. You can skip ahead and you can set the amount of time if you want. The 30 sec skip is quite useful. The chapter skip works like any other DVD player
4. Maybe. This feature has been enabled in the past but is currently not usable because several of the number buttons on the remote are mapped to volume commands. You can regain this function by editing the keymap.xml file so the numbers are number again.
5. Functionally there is no difference from versin to version of xbox. The V 1.0 is louder as it has two fans vs one. Technically some of the later version xbox's are more difficult to mod.
6. yes. I use the optical output from the HD pack with my B&K and it works great.
7. Native scaling of the xbox is so-so. Some people will send the signal at 480i and let there TV's chip upconvert for them. If you let the xbox do the upconverting you will get a very good picture (i.e better than you typical dvd player). Depends on how picky you are
8. Can't speak for the pronto but the harmony works fine. Additionally XBMC lets you define the action for any given remote function i.e you can send a channel up from the remote and tell XBMC to treat this as a page up.
BUT.. ON is a separate problem. You will need a separate device such as an XIR (do a search) to remotely turn the box on
9. The only thing I can think of is an IR repeater. Alternatively, you can get an extension cord and place the remote eye away from the box.

Ja Phule 02-01-07, 03:03 PM I have been using my modded xbox with XBMC now for a couple of years. Is the Xbox 360 just as good or better a media extender as XBMC on a modded xbox? Im thinking about MS Vista and an xbox360.
The only advantage 360 has over xbmc is that it can do wmv hd and mpeg2 hd. XBMC is better in everything else do to it's ability to be customized and support for other media formats and scripts.
Ja Phule 02-01-07, 03:07 PM Ja Phule, I wish you would remove the links in your signature.
Glad I can help. :)
I have my dvd iso files and covers in the same directory. If you have your movie cover file in the same directory with the same filename with .tbn file extension, it will associate the movie with the cover.
When you use my dvd profiler program, it creates the thumbnail/movie cover file which uses a .tbn extension and creates a fake dvd iso file (.iso, img, wmv, avi etc). Just delete the fake iso file and put in your actual movie file. I don't know how this would work if you keep your movie covers and dvd rips in different directories.

OK, I have my Video files in their own TS folder created when I used dvd shrink with any dvd. I did not do the ISO image but vob's. I went ahead and ripped one in ISO format and followed your directions and it worked fine. :)
Only problem is I would need to rip all the ones already on the server from the VOB to ISO format (50+). Is there another program that you know that is like DVD profiler but will read from a file (HD) rather than DVD only?
Also, I hooked up to the 4805 last night and it only gave me an otpion of 480P and 4:3 format. (I used the monster cable Component HD pack setup) I have the MS HD pack with optical audio ouptput for 5.1 somewhere here and I will try that later today.
I have installed the 2.0.1 Final release of XBMC dated Nov. 26 2006. Maybe I need to be at a later release datae or revision?
I also ran into another BIG problem. When I built the HT room I put cables, power, everything I could think of BUT forgot to add a cat5 port! No phone, nothing, heck turn off the phones was my motto when watching a movie, quite in the theatre please. :D
So now I am ordering another 10/100 nic card for server along with some add'l 320/500 GB HD's to finish up the server. Also need to go into the attic and run a cat5 cable from the HT room directly to the server room (75'). I will use a cross connect cable for the Xbox and linux video server. The video server will have to nics on two different networks. Do not want to share BW with the spousal unit. :)

Not necessarily, you can assign thumbnails for the folders that you have your dvds in by naming the cover folder.jpg and placing it within the folder. I think there's an option in my program to create movie folders and the folder.jpg file instead of tbn files and fake iso images.

Make sure you go into the original xbox dashboard and enable 480p, 720p, and 1080i options in addition to widescreen. This will allow you to get more video output resolutions.

I know some guys are using a wireless bridge to overcome the cat5 connection.

Here is a quick and easy step by step with items needed, so you do not need to make multiple runs and searches at the stores. I do not know how I know this but it's a CYA type of thingie. :)
If you have a game stop or EB games store close by they are selling refurbished Xbox's for $99. Come with a controller, HD, DVD & S-video cables.
1. Download softmod sid 4.0 http://rapidshare.com/files/8338270/sid.4.0.nknave.edition.xbox-hq.rar
PS. Scroll to bottom of screen and select FREE, you have to wait for 30 seconds or so but it is free.
2. Buy a AR (Action Replay) kit at same store. Includes 8 MB Mem card (Fits into contoller), USB cable to program mem card from PC and the Software needed to do that. ($30)
3. Pick up a used game like 007 agent under fie for around $5 or one of the other games listed in link below. (Not copied but original)
4. Copy of FlashFXP, Cute, etc. (FTP SW for 10/100 network link to Xbox by hub/switch or cross over cable)
5. HD Pack (MS preferred, bought mine used at game stop for $8)
6. MS preferred Remote control and IR. (CK ebay, around $14-$18 shipped.)
That's it for getting her up and going. Then either upgrade the HD from 8/10GB to 250GB or use a networked file server. (250GB Western Digital for $65 at Newegg)
Once you have everthing (except the remote and HD pack, do not need them to mod the box) then follow the steps at the link proivded.

XBMC is 720p but video playback is in 480p
When I play DVD video from my SMB share it reverts back to 480p instead of 720p. I even went back into the original dashboard and disable 480p but my video still only plays in 480p. Everything else, XBMC menu's, are in 720p.
Hopefully someone has a clue how to fix this issue....Thanks.

There are 2 video output settings within XBMC, one for the gui (xbmc menu) and one for video playback. You need to go into your video settings and set the resolution to 720p also.
glennvc 02-04-07, 02:39 PM I was wondering how you guys fill the gap between a DVR-PVR and the XBOX. After reading some articles and forums on the Windows XP MCE 2005 it seems that it's just not there yet and the XBOX does a better job and playing formats, etc... But then again, the XBOX doesn't allow you to record shows...
How have you guys solved this predicament?
Thanks!

Thanks for this easy line up of what I need and need to do. However, for the moment I'm leaning towards hard modding the box. Would you recommend doing the soft mod or do you think the hard mod is better? Also, I'm living in Belgium/Europe which may influence your response...
Thanks!

glennvc,
XBMC can't record shows itself but there's nothing stopping you from recording shows on your computer and streaming them to XBMC.
For example, I happen to have an MCE 2005 PC which isn't near my TV, but I can schedule shows to record on it. I use the free TVirsity upnp server to stream the shows to my XBOX.
Having an MCE 2005 PC is certainly not a requirement - you can use programs like BeyondTV and SageTV to record shows if you like. I *think* these programs will allow you to record the shows using DivX, meaning you wouldn't need a upnp server to stream them - you could simply save the recordings to a samba share and stream from there.
Or you could even abandon Windows entirely and create a Myth TV box using Linux, but I don't have any experience with that, unfortunately.

I use a tv card on my pc using windvr software. I set up the recordings in windvr, which records shows in mpeg2 format at dvd resolution (works well). I share the folder where windvr saves the recordings and watch them via XBMC. I also ran a test, where windvr is still recording a show on my pc, XBMC will still be able to access it and play it...very interesting.

A bit OT:
I'm streaming Xvid and Divx TV shows from a 250mb SimpleShare brand NAS disk over my 10/100 wired network into my XBMC.
Every so often, and at seemingly random times, there is a glitch in the stream where the picture (and sound) will lock up for a second or so and then pick back up. It's not like a "skip", more like a "pause", I'd say no shorter than .5 seconds and no longer than 1.5 seconds. And it's pretty random in frequency, sometimes a couple of times a minute, sometime only once or twice per show.
It's not a deal-breaker for the wifey and I, but it's a minor annoyance that we'd like to eliminate.
Also: This doesn't feel to me to be related to the "jumping ahead in time" problem I've been having with playing DVD ISOs. That problem seems to have been fixed by turning my cache settings to zero (I haven't actually watched enough movies to feel that it's totally solved yet).
I suspect this problem is due to one of two culprits:
My network connection is getting "clogged" up and the stream is being interrupted. I don't however have a whole lot going on with my network, through.
OR
The Xbox itself is bogging down during decoding.
Would anyone out here have any suggestions to either
A) Increase priority my network gives to streams from the NAS to the XBMC
OR
B) Somehow improve decoding performance in the XBMC
OR...
Does anyone else know what it is I'm dealing with here...
Thanks.
perrypoke 02-06-07, 02:00 PM Well, I love XBMC so much in my house, I decided to add another in my car and I thought some of you might like to see the pics and hear about my install.
1. I bought two broken XBOX consoles on Ebay for $45 shipped. One had an error code that was easily fixed, and the other was trashed.
2. I installed a 200GB HD that I got on Black Friday for $20 in the error code machine, and modded it with the latest version XBMC and loaded in all of my media.
3. I cut out the power button and took out a controller port on the trashed XBOX and wired a couple of 16’ CAT-5 cables to each of those items.
4. I unplugged the power button and one controller port on the working XBOX and plugged in the extended port and power cables, wiring in a disconnect at each end in case I ever have to remove anything.
5. I built a plate that fits where my cig lighter and ash tray are in my car and installed the power button and controller port on the backside of that so they look good and flush. I then plugged in a remote eye to the controller port.
6. I ran the CAT-5 and a set of A/V cables from the dash to the trunk of my car.
7. Installed the XBOX and a power inverter in the trunk and plugged everything in.
8. Installed a cheap double DIN in dash Audiovox head unit with a built in video screen in the factory radio location.
And walla!!! I now have a working XBMC machine and 1500 CD’s worth of music all at my fingertip! I can power it up right from my dash, and even reboot it if it ever locks up for any reason. I can also use the XBOX remote and the 5” screen to navigate the GUI, just like I do in my house. I wouldn’t recommend anything smaller that a 5” screen though, and a 7” would be better. I have good eyesight, so I can read the XBMC text on this thing, but some would definitely have trouble. My next step is to add a wireless controller back there in my trunk so I can ftp to it and update everything when my car is parked in my driveway.
I’m lovin’ it!!!

First thing I would do is play with the network cache settings on XBMC. Settings --> Systems --> Cache. Try lowering the video cache for the local network to like 1024kb or even less.

try the cache settings as suggested.
you can bring up CPU utilization during video playback with either the white or black button. can't remember. I doubt you will find anything out of the ordinary there...
most likely a network performance issue. check your PC/Server as well.
XBMC doesn't support any QOS features. I can say that I can serve DVD's over Wifi with 2 of my xboxes and wired with 4 more from one or more of my NAS's and I can easily stream 3 DVD's simultaneously with 0 glitches. Others have reported 6 DVD streams simultaneously off Infrant NAS etc... I think with a little debug you will get it right....

Finally got my XBOX setup for HD complete with all of the Monster cables. Previously I was using a different HD pack and coax and had GOOD 5.1 sound. Now I have the Monster pack with optical and NO 5.1 - argh! I have Dolby turned on in the XBOX Dash, I have it turned on in XBMC, but I get nothing via the digital output. I do still get normal sound via the normal stereo plugs - grr. I'm pretty sure the receiver is actnig correctly, I'll swap a different optical on there and see but for now assume that's not the issue. Any ideas? I see thi splaying downloaded HD content and playing ripped DVDs when I select the Dolby option. I have AC3 turned off as that seems to really hose things, I could swear my stereo is AC3 compatible though. This has got to be something silly - I had issues with coax too once upon a time but I think I've covered those bases.

Turn AC3 on within XBMC. You should be setting your audio to digital. Are you getting any sound via optical (5.1 or stereo)?
I have my network cache set to 0.
I'm really just at a loss about where to start. Turn everything off and see what's eating up network resources? Is there any diagnostic software out there?

When I turn on AC3 I get no sound at all as I recall. I couldn't quite recall what AC3 was so tried turning it off and got some sound - but no digital :-( I do not believe I'm getting any digital at all via that port. I will confirm tonight that the stereo input actually works by swapping cables with a known good cable. Looking at the end of the cable it's glowing red so somethnig is working at least! Other than plugging in the little mini plug on the Monster Cables adapter do I need to do anything? I know others are using these...

Man, thanks so much for the clear and easy directions! It's a huge help. It has also motivated me to bid on and win an Xbox w/DVD kit on eBay - for a sweet price too! I now have an Xbox, the DVD remote/adapter, and a couple games on the way. I've also got a bid in on an AR kit and 007 game. I hope to have those coming soon as well. With luck sometime this next week I'll be softmodding my Xbox and enjoying it in my newly purchased home on my newly purchased TV!
Thanks again!
davidcotton 02-10-07, 04:25 AM Whats the maximum size hard drive you can install into an xbox these days? Its so irritating. I did have a chipped xbox back in the day when they came out but sold it on due to a)lack of use and b)the picture being crap on my telly. Turns out it was the tv that was at fault. Its a toss up between an xbox running xbmc or a tvix. The tvix is tempting as its a one box stop as opposed to having the xbox, computer, and any harddrive/nas running at the same time. Not to mention the jumping through hoops to get it up and running in the first place. On the other hand xbmc HAS to be one of the best user interfaces around.

at least 320G....
you can buy a premodded box with a 320G Drive and mod chip pre-installed for the price of a tvix with no HD....

Is there any way to increase the speed at which a movie starts when streaming? When I select a movie and hit play it can take 10-20 seconds for it to start. When the kids do this, they think something is wrong.
Scotty6595 02-10-07, 01:20 PM Sounds like you may need to decrease the cache size in settings. Knock it down by half and see if this helps with the lag on movie startup.
What kind of startup time should I expect?
Is this something I can change from the gui or do I need to edit a file?
Scotty6595 02-11-07, 03:12 PM When I start up a movie it takes 1 maybe 2 seconds... I do have a wired setup though.
Your cache settings can be changed by going into Settings > System > Cache within the GUI. Look for Video LAN or something like that and cut your cache down by half and see if that improves the lag. I have mine set at like 1024 or something like that...
Good luck...
I turned all caches off and it made no difference at all. Each time play is hit it takes between 8-10 secs to start. That is a long time when you are staring at the screen expecting something to happen. I also read something about subtitles affecting it. The only mention I saw of subtitles was 'search for subtitles in rars' which I already had off. Is there another area to look at for turning subtitles off?
My movies are ripped with DVDShrink and set to start playing with no menu at all.
Scotty6595 02-11-07, 08:53 PM What release date of XBMC are you using? Also, are your movies saved as .iso or .vob within a folder?
So far I'm stumped but maybe we can figure this out....lol
Scotty
I don't remember the release date. 2.01 Full maybe? I have VOBs in a folder for all of my movies.

I rip my stuff with shrink to ISO and it seems to take 2-3 seconds max to start a DVD from my infrant NAS. Move the file to the local HD and test... Maybe there is an issue with the server which was my initial guess anyway. Is there anything interesting popping up in the XBMC.LOG file?
Sean
I will take a look at the log file later when I get home. Where is it located? :)
I'm guessing I need to ftp it over to look at it?
Have you used optical before on your reciever? Have you correctly set the source input on the receiver for optical?
Argh, after all that work it was the silly receiver! Swapping cables and the works got it working. Silly inputs on the receiver are labeled but really shouldn't have had anything but a number on them IMO since they can be swapped all over. Thank you Yamaha! Grr! I thought for sure this was a software issue since it would give sound sometimes but not others - turns out it will give sound via analog all the time as well as digital UNTIL you go into somehting surround sound enabled - then the analog stops. Much head banging here but it is working and working well - thanks!
As for movies starting up - a long pause makes me wonder, is it posisble that the HD on the source device has spun down? Mine pauses like that but ONLY when the HDD is sleeping and has to wake up. Afterwards everything plays quickly...
Another question - setiting up my DVD library. I've got multiple shares and have set them to be Movies as the media type. Doesn't matter - they still have to be set individually as movies and is time consuming. I cannot simply scan everything automatically because for instance Band of Brothers is like 6 DVD and they all will show up as BOB - with no DVD number. How are folks handling this? I can do each DVD but umm, I have more than 500 so it could take forever! I do see we can now export the database - thank God! At last when I'm done I'll have a good backup (lol). I have DVD Profiler going but right now due to some data lost it's not current with my existing setup - is using that database really the best way to go?
The software just keeps getting better. Fingers crossed that the 360 gets whacked so we casn move to a better platform in the future. Speakign fo which, didn't I hear that XBMC had been ported to a PC OS? Anyone know the status fo that? Is it half as good and active with the developers?
Speakign fo which, didn't I hear that XBMC had been ported to a PC OS? Anyone know the status fo that? Is it half as good and active with the developers?
The original XMBC devs are still cranking on MediaPortal (http://www.team-mediaportal.com/)
Is it as good as XBMC - that's up for debate. It's certainly a very nice app for the PC. But being on a PC, has it's drawbacks. I gave up trying to configure it to use a player & filter graph that let me enable & disable subtitles on the fly, or switch audio streams on the fly (ala XBMC). But that has more to do with the OS & media players than Mediaportal.
Haven't played with it in a while (Summer of 06), but it used to use WMP as the default player, which has some minuses for playing ISOs or VOBs. Of course you could configure it to use an external player, but then you gave up the nice OSD once in that app (unless that app had one).
Mediaportal is written on the .NET framework, and will support multiple HD / SD tuners. It's supposed to have gotten a new TV engine recently, but when I tried it, I had better luck with the (Java) SageTV (CPU utilization was never as low in MediaPortal as it was in Sage, I think Mediaportal was not using Purevideo's hardware accel properly), and so am using SageTV for OTA HDTV.
Whatsmore, the devs are primarily European, so they can't play with ATSC hardware easily - so hardware support for ATSC tuners lagged behind the DVB cards used accross the pond.
My HTPC plan wat to essentially combine my ReplayTVs & XBMC into a single front end. But no front end is really up to the task (Mediaportal was the closest). So now I have 3 boxes all doing 1 thing very well. Sage = OTA HD, ReplayTV = SD room/Room streaming, XBMC = everything else.
YMMV

Here's my suggestion :)
start by plugging your xbox in the wall :)
I have done a dozen of these soft mods and have no idea what the files your reference are: the two most popular and fool proof softmods are SoftMod Installer Deluxe 4.5 and Krazies Ndure mod.

you might start by downloading one of them and reviewing the docs...
Sean
Scotty6595 02-12-07, 08:05 PM READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!!! They are written for 6th graders or by 6th graders....lol
Sean is spot on with the 2 best soft mod choices... If you read the instructions and have the necessary items you can softmod in under 15 minutes...

The speed to start can also be very specific to the server and drives you are using. My friend's was so as hell on our network compared to mine. He eventually had some things go wrong and rebuilt the machine so the new server is snappy but literally it was the server, not the network, not XBMC or anything else and between the 2 servers it was night and day (and mine was a Celeron 1.4Ghz, 256mb ram, XP Pro, ATA100, so nothing fancy). Actually I think his was perhaps supperior to mine but for whatever reason, he never got the same performance out of it.

After you start a movie, press start/menu to bring up the bottom left OSD and go to the audio option. You'll see a toggle for subtitles, turn it off and then click "Set as default for all movies". That will make sure they aren't enabled anymore when a movie starts.

Thanks. That cut it down to about 6 seconds. I am downloading some stuff right now. I will test when that is done and see if it is better. Turning off subtitles cut the time in half.

Thanks, but still no cigar. Where do you get the directories? when I 'unrar' I get no directories.
Scotty6595 02-12-07, 11:12 PM Are you using WinRAR? I just downloaded that T3CH version and checked and it definitely has all the correct directories...
Scotty6595 02-12-07, 11:17 PM What exactly does your folder contents look like after un-raring the T3CH file? Can you post a screenshot?
Anyone having trouble downloading the from the T3Ch website? When I click on the link on the T3CH website it said the ftp.endpoint.nu server not found. I wonder if my ISP is not resolving the hostname.
magawake 02-12-07, 11:53 PM Scotty: In Linux 'unrar e' does not extract folders, however on Windows it does :-)
I used Windows now, and it works!! Thanks for your help , and more important your quick response!
Do you know if its possible to setup NFS + XBMC? I want to use Samba as my last resort :-)
Scotty6595 02-13-07, 12:09 AM Glad you got it figured out! I just happen to be surfing before bedtime and you sucked me in...lol Now I'm up past my bed time.. J/K...
I will have to defer to someone else on your question about NFS... I can point you in the right direction though...
Go to... http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/forum/ and do a search for NFS. I did a quick one just a second ago and the results were not favorable for you unfortunately... I just read the first few returns and it looks like it may not be supported.
But then again, I am up past my bed time and I may have missed something...lol
Good luck!

magawake 02-13-07, 12:19 AM Hey Scotty, thnks again!
I am using Samba, got the setup.
My question now is, does the xbox 360 HD-DVDplayer remote work with xbox?
Scotty6595 02-13-07, 12:25 AM I have a 360 but I use the Harmony 360 remote for both my 360 and modded xbox. If the 360 HD DVD player remote is a universal/programmable then I would say yes. The codes used by the 360 are different than those used by the xbox. If all else fails you can go get a used DVD dongle and remote at a Game Stop for 10 bucks and your off to the races... On the other hand you could spend a hundred bucks and get the Harmony 360 (or any other universal for much cheaper than 100 dollars) and control both systems. By the way, you will need the dvd dongle to use a remote with the old xbox...
magawake 02-13-07, 08:31 AM Is this a 'DVD Dongle?'
Scotty6595 02-13-07, 09:30 AM Here it is.... it fits into one of the controller ports.

speed32219 02-13-07, 10:38 AM Thanks for this easy line up of what I need and need to do. However, for the moment I'm leaning towards hard modding the box. Would you recommend doing the soft mod or do you think the hard mod is better? Also, I'm living in Belgium/Europe which may influence your response...
Thanks!
Best,
Glenn
I had the same thoughts, softmod vs hard mod. I decided to do the softmod due to time frame, I could download the softmod and had the needed tools to do it the same day. After some research the consensus was there is no functionality difference between them. It seemed that the hardmod was easier to recover from a crash, but I haven't had any issues with the softmod and it works great. It is really your call.
Scotty6595 02-13-07, 10:41 AM Does anyone here have any experience with upgrading your softmodded xbox with a new larger hard drive?
What mfg. of hard drive and size did you use...
Is it easy to determine if the hard drive was lockable?
Did you use a tutorial? If so, can you point me to it?
How big can I go on the hard drive size?
Any and all advance will be greatly appreciated!

Thx, I tired to put everything on one page for simplicity sake. I spent a few days reading and trying to pull everything together (SW and HW), not to mention running to EB games or Game stop a few times to pick up the things I needed. (Thank goodness they had most everything but the IR controller and dongle)
XBMC is a great thing and relatively inexpensive. I haven't done a HD upgrade yet on the Xbox whcih seems to be the most work in building the system. I instead have elected to network it using a linux (ubuntu with samba for SMB file sharing) to access my media. (Movies, MP3's, Pictures, etc)

Here is a link to hard drive compatibility chart. 320GB is the largest so far but 500 might be working now also. On the xbmc site I do believe they have a tutorial for changing HD with a softmod. If you can't find it I'll try and see if I have it saved somewhere

Scotty6595 02-13-07, 01:52 PM has anyone connected their XBMC to an AVR?

I have mine connected to a Kenwood AVR and DTS/Dolby are both working fine...
Did you go into the Settings > My Video Settings > Audio Setup.... Choose Digital > click on Dolby and DTS...
That should get you going...
Ja Phule 02-13-07, 02:00 PM In the latest versions of XBMC, analog and digital audio can also be set within the audio settings during movie playback.
I also have no issues with DTS on my receiver.
magawake 02-13-07, 02:31 PM Yes, I did that. I still get 'Dolby Digital', and I am 100% sure the tracks I am playing are DTS.
Also, I am using HK AVR 635 with Optical input from xbox
Any ideas?

Is your receiver showing Dolby Digital exactly? Sometimes whatever audio you select in the DVD movie menu isn't correctly set within XBMC. Get into the video menu on screen display of XBMC while the movie is playing and manually select the audio option to DTS if it is not set. Also, if you're using a 6.1/7.1 set up with your receiver, it may show something like Dolby Digital PLIIx meaning it is processing the DTS sound to 7.1.
magawake 02-13-07, 04:51 PM Yes its saying 'Dolby Digital' on it display. I know that the DVD has 2 audio tracks. 1 DTS, and 1 Dolby Digital. Is it possible to select the audio track on XBMC?

Yup. Bring up the OSD (on screen display) by pressing the start button (I think) while the DVD is playing. It should bring up that cross looking menu at the bottom left of the screen if you are using PMIII or Clearity skins. One of the options is audio which lets you select movie options such as subtitles, audio track, audio delay, etc.

As long as you have the IR dongle that plugs into the xbox, you should be able to control your xbox with the harmony. There should be an xbox profile (and also xbox media center profile) in the harmony online wizard.
Is there a way to have a movie auto restart from the beginning when it is done? Like an endless loop unless stopped.

I dont think that regular DVD players have this feature do they?
Ja Phule 02-14-07, 12:35 AM Is there a way to have a movie auto restart from the beginning when it is done? Like an endless loop unless stopped.
Put your video in a playlist and have it repeat. Should work.
Heres a question, what do you do to view a video downloaded from your scripts any of the videos I have tried to download they say they are downloading but they never start playing. I'm using T3CH version from 02-09-07 also I have tried other versions. No error message pops up nothing happens at all. Also I have tried all Youtube, Apple trailers, google video and any of the others.
The xbox is a ver 1.4, Thompson drive, softmod with the hd pack add on. I have searched on xbox scenes and XBMC forums but I haven't found any answers. Thanks for any help.
Scotty6595 02-14-07, 04:51 PM The problem is not with your xbox, it is with the scripts. Apparently most of the YouTube, Google Video and Apple Trailers scripts are temporarorly broken. Last I read, they were working on the issue...
speed32219 02-16-07, 01:40 PM Not necessarily, you can assign thumbnails for the folders that you have your dvds in by naming the cover folder.jpg and placing it within the folder. I think there's an option in my program to create movie folders and the folder.jpg file instead of tbn files and fake iso images.
I went ahead and converted them to ISA and used your program to get the covers/graphics info. That's what I've been doing since my last post, it sure does take a while.
Make sure you go into the original xbox dashboard and enable 480p, 720p, and 1080i options in addition to widescreen. This will allow you to get more video output resolutions.
Done, when I was using the PC with my ATI all-in-wonder I had the std. svideo connected between the two (very old ATI card with no component) and the only option was 480p ntsc. When I hooked up to the 4805 it must have recognized the MS HD pack (Component) with the fiber and all kinds of Video/Audio options appeared in the menu (I like that when it happens) :). So I did enable all three 480p, 720p, 1080i.
I know some guys are using a wireless bridge to overcome the cat5 connection.
Yes, I have a 56Mbps wireless connected now for my Laptop and visitors, but I would need the 100+ Mbps setup and that would cost much more than reunning a 100' cat 5 cable.
I started the vob to iso conversion on my XP machine and transferred the video files accross a 100 Mbps wired network to a Linux (Ubuntu) server that I put together with the new 250GB HD. (Old Emachine 466 celeron with 192 MB Sdram and a 4.3 GB C HD It is now my Media server) :D
Works great after I adjusted the cache up for the local network. But did it ever take a long time to transfer the video files (55 4-4.5GB) accross the network. I now need more HD's (2ea. 320's, 500's or 750's) to complete the movies, MP3 and picture folders. It is going to take me a month to get everything loaded! But it is so cool looking and my pictures look great with that pan & scan feature within Xbmc. For top notched viewing I still have the two (2) D1's but the upconverted 480p to 1080i looks pretty darn good for average viewing and not to mention the convience.
PS. New egg has WD 320GB ATA 100's for $84. They also have portable HD enclousres that take PATA or SATA drives (with their own power supplies) that attach via USB 2.0 for $20-$25 (I need to check to see if the Xbox can be converted to take a USB drive through the controller ports if so you could add 3 external USB HD's for like 1.5 TB of storage). I am going to build over the next couple of months a slim line or SFF server with the external USB drive enclosures so I can rack mount the stuff in an enclosed rack and make everything look pretty. Also need to reduce the FAN Noise, sheesh, I can't hear the 4805 in high mode anymore when the audio is muted. :D
magawake 02-16-07, 06:03 PM Ok, i went and bought the Xbox Doggle. Can you turn on and off your xbox using that?
Ja Phule 02-16-07, 08:22 PM Ok, i went and bought the Xbox Doggle. Can you turn on and off your xbox using that?
If you are referring to the xbox dvd remote kit then no. There is no way to turn on the xbox with a remote unless you do an IR mod using something like XIR or X3IR. You can turn the xbox off with the remote in XBMC but not on.
Ja Phule 02-16-07, 08:23 PM I went ahead and converted them to ISA and used your program to get the covers/graphics info. That's what I've been doing since my last post, it sure does take a while.
But it is so cool looking and my pictures look great with that pan & scan feature within Xbmc. eliastico 02-17-07, 09:06 AM What firewall are you all using with your networked comp? Currently i'm using kerio personal firewall but everytime I wanna access the shares with xbmc I have to shut down the firewall, cause it's blocking the xbox. I've looked into the setting of the kerio firewall but can't find anything that would fix that and allow the xbox to connect. Any help is appreciated.

I use personal firewalls on all my computers (Zone Alarm) instead of a gateway firewall. I have found that they are excellent, never ever had a problem. so I do not enable the gateway firewall. Now with that said, I use DHCP on the DSL gateway (for all my locally attacdhed PC's inclduing the new linux server) except I have set Xbmc with a static IP like 192.168.1.105. This way when I shutdown my computer or reboot the server I can always get to it and do not have to go into zone alarm and look to see if I'm being rejected from accessing the new Xbmc IP (DHCP) address. If you set the Xbmc with a static IP and add it to a trusted zone with a share name then you won't have those issues.
Edited: Sorry, went off on a tangent. If you set the Xbmc with a static IP address, then you should do the following. I'm not familiar with your firewall but go into the log and clear it. Then bring up Xbmc and try to access it. Look at the newly cleaned log and you should see blocked requests from a local address trying to access it. In zone alarm you would just highlight the blocked request and then down on the bottom of the screen you would see a trusted prompt. You would then click on that and it would ask you if you wanted to add that to the local networks trusted zone and you would give it a name like video server and add. Then you would not have a problem anymore, so see if you firewall has somoething similar. Good luck.

You should know that it is like a honey do list, it never ends. :D
Ja Phule, I need some major expert help here. Yesterday I put everything in the HT room, hooked it up and it works great (Remote, accessing files, weather, music, etc.). Except, I can not get 720p nor 1080i output from Xbmc. I thought I had it working on my old Thosiba 61" RPTV through component. But, the 4805 when you switch inputs shows what the signal is and it keeps displaying 480p. I have the Xbmc connected to my Yammy AVR using component (MS HD pack inclduing fiber for Audio) and letting the yammy do analog to digital conversion and output it to the 4805 hdmi to the DVI/M1 port.
I went into setup again to verify and even disabled 480P on the Xbox console and just left 720P/1080i enabled. My Comcast box is connected HDMI through the yammy AVR, so to verify the AVR wasn't scaling it I connected it (Comcast 3412) component to the AVR (Same DTV Component input as the Xbmc was using) and it displays 1080i on the 4805. So I must be doing something wrong somewhere within the Xbox/Xbmc.
I am running release 1.6 in the Xbox and 2.01 of Xbmc dated November 2006, should I be at a later release date? Also, what do you have set for contrast/brightness/gamma/filters (low/high/hardware encoded filtering), etc on the Xbmc console?

First, you should verify in XBMC that you have your video output set to 720p (or 1080i) in both the Video settings and and Appearance - Screen settings.
I'm not too familiar with your Yamaha receiver. Does it do component to hdmi transcoding (ie, 480p comp in, 480p hdmi out, 720p comp in, 720p hdmi out, 1080i comp in, 1080i hdmi out), or hdmi upconverting (ie, 480p comp in, 720p/1080i hdmi out)?
I'll have to check my 4805 settings next time I power it up. I have set the XBMC video output for the XBMC menus to 720p (Appearance output) and the video output to 480i (NTSC 16:9 mode) so the 4805 can do the deinterlacing. I usually use DVE to calibrate, I leave gamma at default.

That's my problem, resolution in the Xbmc only shows auto or 480P. There is no other settings, I tried everything. As far as the Yammy AVR, yes it passes what ever you feed into it on the component, I double checked it with the Comcast STB and it displayed 1080i.
My problem is I can not find in BMC anything other than 480p,NTSC. When I try and change resolution it just gives me the optioin of Auto or 480p NTSC. It is driving me nuts. In the Xbox dash I turned everything on again, 480/720/1080 with widescreen and that is OK. It's BMC causing me headaches.
Ja Phule 02-17-07, 11:39 PM It seems that when you've enabled 720p/1080i from the original xbox dash, it's not being saved correctly for XBMC to enable those resolutions. If you go back into the dash, are 720p/1080i resolutions still selected as On?

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am sane again!
Here is what I found, when I would boot to the Xbox dash from startup and go to video it would show all selected and on. After going through the Xbmc options looking for anything 1000 times I had seen where you can go to the original dash. So instead of powering the unit down and powering up with the dvd tray open to go into the original dash I opted to try and go into from the Xbmc screen.
That little red icon on the bottom right of the main splash screen (Xbmc) So I booted to the original dash from there and it put me right into the video screen where 480/720/1080i all showed OFF! WTF, so I turned them on and re-booted and what a fantastic looking upscaled display. Thank you, I am now going to watch Crank with the better half and she said thank you too. :D
I spent many hours trying to get that darn thing to work. Have a great evening.

dolby0102 02-18-07, 09:25 PM I have a couple of questions.
1. Where does everyone get the high res dvd thumbnails? IMDB just won't work as the thumbs are not consistent and low res.
2. How do you handle tv dvd series, in which there are multiple discs? I would rather not have 10 dvd covers of the series "24".
3. I am using the clarity skin, and when I am in videos and click on one of the dvd covers the inner folder is shown. And here i have to click on the video_ts folder before the movie plays. I have the stacked option checked. Everything worked just fine before upgrading to the newest snapshot. Any thoughts?
I appreciate any help.

1. You can dl the dvd covers from dvdempire.com or cdcovers.cc or get it from dvd profiler.
2. How about placing each disc for each season within an additional folder. Therefore season 1 would have a folder with 6 discs in it and give the main folder the thumbnail.
3. Try pressing the Play button (if you're using the remote) or press the white button and choose play.
Ja Phule 02-19-07, 02:28 AM I've noticed in the last 4 or 5 dvds I've watched over the network, that my dvd movies have been freezing for 1 to 5 seconds after being played for over an hour. I know someone mentioned this earlier a few pages back but now I too am noticing this. I have my cache set to 0.
Scotty6595 02-19-07, 10:01 AM I have seen this happen to a few dvds and I just attributed it to a layer break not being removed by my ripping software... It seems to always happen right where I would assume the layer break to be... Maybe a mplayer problem... I have been running the experimental mplayer for a couple of weeks and I haven't noticed it happening. Look in the extras folder for the experimental mplayer if you want to try it out.
Has anyone noticed that IMDB lookups now come back with improper data for writers\actors\blah blah? I'm about to update XBMC inhopes of correcting this but it looks like something broke in the backend on the IMDB site or rather they changed and broke XBMC.
I'm in a unique position in that my DVDProfiler database isn't the same as my data - I lost two HDs toa fluke soI cannot just export that database (although I REALLY want to!). That database will be what I use tofigure out what DVDs I need to rerip (sigh). I can also not use the AutoUpdate that XBMC has because as others have noted multi-disk movies do not work. Band Of Brothers 1-6 end upas 6 copies of BoB with no way to tell one from another. I'm currently looking each movie up in turn and when I hit a mult-disk I add it, then manually go into the movie title from the movie view and denote which disk it is. PAINFUL but I hope to do it only once - the ability to export my database is VERY nice I have to say!
Downloading Clearity now to checkout. Have folks looked at the XBMC Wide Icons? Nowe THOSE were really cool but updating 500DVDs individually would be a PITA. I'd love to see some way to do those automatically - hopefully from a central database of user made icons.... :-(

Are these dvd's directly on the Xbox or networked to a PC. If a PC, set your LAN/Network buffers to 1024Kb. No problem here so far. Also, didn't you just upgrade the XBMC?
dolby0102 02-20-07, 12:26 PM I have the newest T3ch build 7841, and i cannot get the IMDB to load. It loads then freezes, just hangs. I checked my internet connection is working on the xbox. Any thoughts?
gilbreen 02-20-07, 12:30 PM Yesterday afternoon, I noticed that when I did an IMDB lookup that it seems to find the right movie but then comes back with all blank info but it didn't hang at all. Perhaps IMDB has changed their internal structure which is causing the issue.
Scotty6595 02-20-07, 12:32 PM I just read over at xboxmediacenter.com that IMDB has infact changed there internal structure and this had screwed up the lookup function in XBMC. The developers are working on a fix as I type this...

Scotty6595 02-22-07, 11:10 AM The IMDB lookup problem has been fixed in SVN... TECH probably won't come out with a new build until Sun. or Monday. Maybe a Gasgiver or Pimped version will be out sooner.
Hey BLKMGK, do you have an earlier version you can revert back to?
perrypoke 02-22-07, 12:40 PM Or you can just download the fixed IMBD scraper from SVN and ftp it over to your XBMC. Just overwrite the old imdb.xml file in the system/scrapers/video folder. I'm pretty sure this will work anyway. :)

Thanks!

Hey BLKMGK, do you have an earlier version you can revert back to?
I do have an older version I can easily revert to however I upgraded because the old version was suddenly filling ni the data with null values or placing the wrong data in fields. The title was fine but that was about it - d'oh! I knew it was the backend that had changed on the WEB site and am glad to see that an update is "easy" - will try this weekend.
One odd thing perhaps others have seen - my shares don't seem to be properly taking the content flag. I set them as "Movies" when I created the links but as I goto each movie file I'm having to set the content type again - anyone else seeing this? Wasn't so bad when the IMDB was the only database to look up data in but that has now become three different database so nto only do I have to set the content type but I have to set the proper database - and then look it up! Ouchie, 500+ DVDs is alot! :o

Does soft modding do exactly the same thing as hard modding? I soldered a chip into my xbox a couple of years ago and I have to tell ya I wouldn't do that again. Oh sure ppl made it look easy but its not that damn easy and you need a big magnifying glass and a super steady hand. I even screwed up a trace and had to buy a trace pen.

dstrain,
I definitely second Scotty's recommendation of Krayzie's Ndure installer. It's easy even for newbies and the installer walks you through the whole process. It is also very safe, as it allows you to back up your eeprom and it even will allow you to revert your XBOX drive completely back into it's unmodded state if necessary. You can be softmodded in about 15 minutes or so.

dstrain 02-23-07, 09:42 PM Well, it's looking like I might need to buy an XBOX Live subscription to update my dash. It appears that aside from the 2-month trial that came with a few games that I don't have, I'm going to be forced to shell out a bunch of money that I also don't have to get a subscription.
Is there a way around this? I have no interest in playing games online with this machine.
dstrain,
You don't need to buy an XBOX Live subscription to update your dash. Go to your local Gamestop and get a used recent-ish Live game or Halo 2 game (these should be pretty cheap at this point). Or go to Blockbuster if you have one and rent a game. I believe Halo2 will update your dash automatically. On other Live-enabled games you can select the 'LIVE' option on the setup menu and it will update your dash. You do not actually have to sign up for LIVE.

I'm confused now. I have Halo2, but can't tell if it's updating anything. I put the disc in, it loads up, then I'm prompted to sign in to XBOX live or not, if not then it just goes to the game settings to play. I can't figure out how to get out of the game and to the dashboard without ejecting the disc.
Any suggestions?
Scotty6595 02-24-07, 09:47 AM I think you need to attempt to sign in to live... It will then detect your current dash version. This is when you will be prompted for the dash update.
Of course you may already have the the most current version dash installed. Have you looked at your dash version? If it is 5960 then you have the latest and can move on to the next step.
To check your dash version, go to settings tab and select system info. Watch the D: number on the bottom of the screen beneath the scrolling text.

Waingro 02-24-07, 10:19 AM Guys,
Bit of a newbie so bear with me. Haven't used FTP to transfer cds to XBMC,
have actually been burning 10-15 albums to DVD-R and then with using DVD2XBOX
have transfered cds to XBOX F Drive (Seagate 250 gig).
Have read the Manual over and over but must have missed something as when I updated to 2.01 recently (local xbox man assisted) , the new 2.01 has wiped all of my bookmarks. I now have no links to the 200cds I can see still sitting on the f-drive.
I know I can't get them back but I want to know what I did wrong in the first place.
When using XBMC, I first click on My Music.
This takes me to the File view, I then highlight Music,
hit white button which brings up a screen , I hit
Add Source. It then gives me the option to browse which
I then do and find the CD sitting on the F drive.
I then get the opportunity to name the cd - which I then type
Radiohead - The Bends. Click OK.
It then appears back in the Files View in the same list as SMB Shares,
Shoutcast, Music, Playlists.
Now should it be sitting there or one further level in.
This is where I think I'm going wrong.
When 2.01 was placed on my xbox, obviously it updated the Files View
level and took my bookmarks with it.
Does all of this make sense ?
Do I achieve that extra level by manually typing in an initial bookmark
eg. <music> them browsing for my CD on F drive.
Hope you guys can help. Scared off by the official XBMC forum.
They have little patience for newbies over there.
All I can see is them saying RTFM.
Believe me I have tried.
Any help appreciated

Thank you so much for the tip. I was trying to follow the "krayzie" tutorial linked a few posts above and it indicated to look for the version number at the top of the scrolling text area. There was nothing of the sort in my dash so a suggestion was to update the dash. The text wasn't at the bottom of the scrolling text area either, but actually within the scrolling text after scrolling down for 5 or more seconds. In any case, the dash is current so I'm good there. Now to get the right game to use. I bought 007 off of ebay, but didn't realize the "platinum edition" didn't work for the softmod. So off to Gamestop I go.
Thanks again.
Ja Phule 02-24-07, 12:53 PM Guys,
Bit of a newbie so bear with me.

I'm kind of confused on what you're saying. Do you want to go to your "My Music" section, then click on the Music bookmark, and then view all your albums? Or do you want to go to your "My Music" section and see all your albums right away?

JaPhule,
Either way is fine by me.
Yes, click on My Music, up comes File view and all are there.
Alternatively house them under the existing Music or Playlist bookmarks.
My main query was:
Is this what everybody else does. Place them in that first screen with the 10
or so other bookmarks already there, or do you place them under Music or Playlists, the reason being is that if I upgrade my build again will I lose all of my new bookmarks I create if I house them on that initial screen. Thats what happened last time.
Is it just a case of somehow backing up the bookmarks you create when you want to change the build. ?

Scotty6595 02-25-07, 12:17 AM If you don't want to lose your bookmarks when you upgrade next time you can always save your userdata folder before deleting your old build and ftp'ing your new build over. Once your new build is on the xbox, just shoot over your userdata folder and all your personal settings and thumbs will be there upon bootup. No resetting your bookmarks or rescanning your databases will be necessary.
Another option is to edit your sources.xml file with your share paths and just keep a copy on your puter for any future upgrades. This file essentially points xbmc to all your shares (bookmarks).
This is how I do it and I think it gives me a cleaner GUI when I enter in to Videos or Music. It will consolidate your shares as if all content was stored at one location. (multipath shares) Below is a simple example of what my video smb share path looks like in the sources.xml file.

I have 2 drives with all of my movies in .iso files. Each drive has a folder containing the movie files... 1 called DVD and 1 called DVD1. When I choose Videos the video screen comes up with all files available (DVD thumbs)and any nested folders that may be there if you choose to categorize out home movies or a DVD series.

Thx for the info. scotty. I just added a new 320GB hard drive to my ubuntu server (in addition to the 250GB I added earlier) and I used your example of the multipath shares and I now have all my movies condolidatd when I select my video's. I just love this Xbmc, it is the best! :)
Of course I changed the Workgroup SMB share guest entry within the source.xml file instead of the local entries.
Onward and Upward, I am now looking for a ATSC/QAM capture/tuner/dvb card that has mpeg 2 endoing/decoding to add HDTV/recording to the setup as well as another 320GB drive. :D It's a shame that I am running this all on an Xbox and an old 466 Mhz celeron Emachine with 192MB sdram and a 4.3 GB C drive. :)
I have a quick question - I am running an older version of XBMC from Oct I believe. My problem is - when I play my playlists, I have the 'Randomize' option selected. Works fine. But when I play an album directly, it randomizes the album. There does not appear to be a 'Randomize' check box. So I have to go back to the Playlist screen and uncheck the 'randomize' box, then back to the album and hit play.
Is there another solution where the XBMC will randomize the playlist if needed, and not the album?

Someone asked this same question over at xboxmediacenter.com... (Maybe you?)

Nope - wasn't me. But thanks for the link. Unfortunately it appears to be a no-joy situation. :(
XBMC is absolutely amazing. I discovered it thanks to this thread.
I bought the dlink dsm520 a couple weeks back and returned it because I felt it was a bit clunky. I don't know if anything can beat xbmc...thanks everyone.
Now if I can only figure out how to run an ethernet cable to my living room.....

I actually just moved my modded XBox up to our main floor tv (360 now rules the roost in the HT downstairs) just a couple weeks ago. Running a Cat5 line to this room would've been nothing short of impossible, so I got a pair of Linksys WRT54G routers and I'm set. Basically, one of them is running as my regular wireless router, and the other is running a hacked (er, third-party) firmware enabling it to act as a wireless client, which in turn shares its connection with anything hard-wired to it (the modded XBox).
I'm VERY happy with the results, and didn't have to worry about all the logistics of running cat5 to our family room. I bought both routers for around $50 each. If you've already got a 802.11G wireless router as your main router, you're already halfway there and would only need to buy one.
Worth checking out!
Steve O 02-28-07, 08:20 PM The Xbox 360 has a "vulnerability" that allows it to run arbitrary code (http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/461489/30/0/threaded). It seems as though this might allow for an HD version of XBMC for the 360 (provided you don't use Live and let Microsoft "patch" the thing when you're not looking).

Scotty6595 02-28-07, 10:21 PM Very interesting read Steve O. Hopefully this is just the beginning of an exploit that will allow for future homebrew apps. on the 360.
(I still refuse to imagine XBMC on the 360.... it would keep me up at night thinking about the possibilities...)
dstrain 02-28-07, 11:50 PM This might be a very fundamental question, but I'm not networking expert here. I've managed to softmod the Xbox with the Krayzie Ndure mod. Now to install the updates I need to FTP to my Xbox, but I cannot get it to connect to save my life.
I have a Time Warner cable modem going into a Linksys wireless router with 4 available ports. From the router I'm going into the computer with one port, and the xbox with another. I can pull an IP from the xbox settings, but cannot FTP successfully to it from my PC. It connects, then says "connection lost". I've tried two different FTP programs. I've tried anonymous ftp and also using "xbox" as a login and password.
What am I doing wrong? I can't find any good tutorials that don't just assume that the user already knows how to do this step.

Do you have FTP enabled in XBMC?
Scotty6595 03-01-07, 09:41 AM Most likely he doesn't have XBMC installed yet. Which dash did you install when softmodding with Krayzie's?
It sounds like maybe a crossover cable issue.... If you go into your router settings do you see the Xbox and its assigned address?
This is probably a very easy fix so don't sweat it!

Thanks for the help guys. As it turns out I reset my router and it works fine now. I have the xbox modded and updated to version 1.1.1.
But I'm stuck again. I have no clue how to install XBMC. I looked on the official site and it appears I have to download the source files and compile with Visual Studio, and so on. Is this correct? Or is there an easier way to do this? It also appears the files available from the official site are different from those on the sourceforge site (older?). I've been digging for some instructions but haven't had any luck finding something clear for the newbie.
Would anyone care to tell me exactly what I XBMC files I need to download and what steps are involved to install the program. Or a link to a nice tutorial?
Thanks.

dstrain 03-01-07, 08:07 PM I'm back. With some help I've managed to get XBMC installed successfully. Now I'm at a loss as to how I get the thing to access media from my PC. I can ftp no problem, but how does one go beyond that to have constant access to the files I want to stream from the PC?
I know nothing of setting up a home network. Tutorials online almost invariably focus on using 2 network cards and a crossover cable. I'm using a cable modem, a linksys router with one cable going to PC and the other to the Xbox.
Are there any detailed and specific tutorials on getting this part of the package setup?
I've found two that tackle the router to PC/Xbox scenario. One just says plug them all in and you're network is setup. The other indicates some editing of the XBMC config file needs to be done.
I'm confused......once again.
Dstrain, I set mine up a few days ago. To share your media all you need to do is right click on the file or directory that you would like to share, go to properties, sharing, then choose share network drive.
Go into xbmc and navigate to the type of media you would like to view...for instance, music, then push the white button and choose add network source (something like that), from there you can browse into your network and add the folder you just shared from your computer. You will only need to do this once and the folder will be available from there on out.
I may be missing steps as I'm just going by memory...it is also likely that there is a different way to do this...either way, good luck :)

Thanks for the suggestion. I decided to tough it out and ran the Cat5e line tonight. It was much easier than I anticipated but then again my attic is fairly accessible.

If your running XP, then you should be able to go to networks (in the control panel) and setup a new network. Name it Workgroup, since that is the default network name for Xbmc I do believe. Then do what was mentioned about sharing your folders. Good luck.
mpjohnst 03-02-07, 07:31 PM So when are the wiz kids in charge of XBMC going to get Netflix streaming movies working?
Netflix on XBMC is a pipe dream come true! I can't wait.
glennvc 03-03-07, 05:17 AM Hi guys,
I've bought a pre-softmodded box a few weeks ago. Been playing with ever since and it's all that you guys told it to be. The WAF factor is definitely high :D
However, I've loaded a couple of skins, update the XBMC versions a few times and now seem to have a problem with the database.
When I go into library mode and highlight a movie, I get a message below the name and year of the movie which says "If you can do this in CSS, please let me know -rdw"
I played with the Clarity skin and the XBOX360.
Also worth mentioning is that the XBMC folder is under the E drive (not E/APPS) and that I have a 130GB drive installed. At first I could not delete or move the XBOX folder to perform an upgrade. Later (perhaps after I switched on allow deletion) I could delete the XBMC folder but not completely, there always remain a few items.
I've deleted the cache and the DB's themselves only recently.
The thing is that with the original XBMC version of 25/01/2007 everything worked fine, I had genres, tittle, year, etc working perfect with rating and the like. Now that message pops up in a lot of screens.
What to do?
Thanks!
Best,
Glenn
Scotty6595 03-03-07, 09:52 AM Glen,
I have not upgraded to the latest release so I can't replicate your strange message but I will post it over at xboxmediacenter.com for the developers to see.
Does this message appear in Both the Clarity and XBOX360 skin? Have you tried to replicate this message with PMIII (XBMC Default skin?)
If you still have a copy of your last stable version that was on your xbox you may want to consider going back to it. Its not unusual for things to get messed up on these weekly builds as they are constantly adding and tweaking features. It may be that this last one is a bit messed up.
glennvc 03-03-07, 03:59 PM Scotty,
Thanks for your reply.
I have this strange error with the Clarity and the PMIII skin. I still get it when I put the original installation back.
I restored the original install 25/01/2007 which didn't have the problem but still the same error. The Clarify skin is no longer in the skin folder. I've tried the latest build of T3CH but same problem.
What can I do to get a completely clean install? I can't completely delete the XBMC folder when I'm in the XBMC program apparently. My box is softmodded with the Mech warriors exploit. Is there a way to start the box but not start XBMC (by pressing some buttons on the gamepad) to enter the linux with FTP support to completely delete the XBMC folder?
How do other softmodded box owners update? Can they completely delete the XBMX folder while running XBMC?
Thanks again!
Best,
Glenn
Scotty6595 03-03-07, 06:03 PM Have your tried powering up your xbox by pushing the DVD tray button. On softmods there are usually dual boots setup. The power button boots up XBMC and the DVD tray button boots up evox dash or some other dash (or visa versa). Give that a try and see if an alternate dash boots up. For a clean install you can't be in XBMC to my knowledge so you will need to be in another dash to completely delete your XBMC folder and FTP a new one over. You can also browse for any of the other dashes via the file menu in XBMC. It should be under APPS. If you find the folder open it up and click on the evox.xbe file or whatever the name of the dash is .xbe. That will load the dashboard up and allow you to gain FTP access to your xbox and perform a clean install.
If by chance you don't have a secondary dash installed let me know and I can probably help from there....

Launching the evox.xbe file did the trick. I was able to delete it all and got rid of the error. However since then I have tried just about every version I could find and the only version which gave me movie ratings was the 'stable" build of 12/11/2006 of T3CH. Annoyingly, other builds do not give ratings and an unbelievable amount of genres have been added!!!
Does anyone have a recent build which has the original amount of Genres and with a rating system that works? Is there anyway to limit the amount of Genres?
While I'm firing away, how can I implement wide tumbs for movies?
By the way, on one of my deleting rounds, I managed to copy the new XBMC folder into another folder and got the 21 error when booting. After some searching I came accross the SlaYers_EvoX_Auto-Installer_v2.7FINAL.exe which contains an iso you can burn to CD and which will boot your XBOX with FTP access so you can undo the damage. So for all the other softmodder noobs out there this is definitely a DVD you want to have handy in case you screw up.
This is the home page: http://slayer.xbox-scene.com/
but you'll have to do a search on the file to download it with a torrent client.
A while ago I also came accross this site: http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16518&page=11
It has info on a script that allows you to do much of then functionality of SageTV with the XBOX, unfortunately only with a rather old build of XBMC but still might be interesting for some.
Thanks to everyone on this list for helping the noobs!
Best,
Glenn
Scotty6595 03-04-07, 03:35 PM Hey Glen,
The genre/rating problem has been fixed in the current SVN... T3CH just hasn't compiled a new build as of yet but one should be out in the next day or so... usually Monday nights.
If you don't have the patients to wait, here is a solution I found over at xboxmediacenter.com
Imdb changed its layout again a bit.
You can get the updated scraper from:
https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/...video/imdb.xml
place it in xbmc/system/scrapers/video/
By the way, Slayers boot disk is a MUST for any softmodder.... good find.
Glad everyone is enjoying their XBMC. In my case I am glad to be of help because it wasn't that long ago that I was in your shoes....lol
Just remember to pay it forward guys....

I actually found this solution in a previous post of yours a page or 2 back but can't manage to get the file. I could get the text of the file though and have copy/pasted the contents and replaced the original file. But I still have all those genres and no ratings. Do I need to delete the db's again? What am I missing?

Scotty6595 03-04-07, 05:29 PM Glen,
Yes you will have to delete your database and rescan... sucks I know, but the scraper will not overwrite an existing db entry.... A feature that makes very good since when you just want to add a few movies with a re-scan with a 200 movie database..
Scotty6595 03-04-07, 10:35 PM FYI folks,
New T3CH build out tonight dated 3-4-07. Tons of fixes in this build. IMDB lookups have been fixed as well as DVD playback stuttering and much more.

You can! Check out http://xir.us/
I bought one and it wors great. If you get the "easy" version you don't even have to solder.
calibos 03-05-07, 10:16 AM Can vouch for XIR. I ordered 3. You will have to open up your xbox though. If that doesn't faze you then rest assured the XIR fitting is a piece of cake.
XBMC has changed the way we watch TV in our house. Massive MAF and FAF ( Mother and Father acceptance factor ). Both Technophobes well and truely converted. They can't believe that I can download all their favourite shows a year before they air over here and that they can watch them wherever of whenever in the house they want on one of our 3 XBMC xboxes at the touch of a button.
They just didn't get to keep up with many shows when missing an episode meant hoping that someone recorded it, meant they might have to watch said DVD HDD recording in a room they didn't want to or meant waiting for me to burn said recording to DVD-R for them to watch on their DVD player in 'their' room. Just too much hassle. They are both watching quadruple the amount of TV shows they used to..........Actually what have I done!! I've turned my parents into couch Potatos!!
Wait till I build some Multi Terabyte storage and Archive our whole DVD collection playable on any XBMC TV at the touch of a button. My Dad will be blown away! "Feel like some Sci-Fi tonight, don't feel like going into Sons room and browsing unsorted 700 DVD shelf though.......
Aha!! Genre Click Sci-Fi Click Dumdedumdedum.....ah Minority Report......Click
I can vouch for the IR option as well (I went with the Xecuter, which is ... oddly similar to the XIR...hmmm). I like XBMC's ability to allow for re-mapping of the commands. I will have to try this as I will have two Xboxes on the same IR network.

I did come accross one other problem while trying to get tumbs for music albums not known to IMDB which I thought might be usefull to others to post here.
I renamed a folder of an album already in the database and did a rescan resulting in having the album twice. Once with it's previous name and once for the renamed folder. Try as I may, I could not get either of the folders removed from the database.
Repeated cleaning of the database and rescanning didn't fix it. Renaming the folder back to the original name niether
I solved it by downloading this tool: http://www.bestsoftware4download.com/download/t-free-sqlite-developer-download-iixylaco.html which allows you to open the database itself (myMusic6.db - under XBMC/userdata/databases) and then removing the offending entry there. Be sure to backup before you try it
Best,
Glenn
Scotty6595 03-06-07, 06:37 PM Nice find on the database editor Glen! Another tool to add to my arsenal of xbox/xbmc mod tools.
Glad this latest version is playing nice for you...

twelvepbrs 03-07-07, 05:55 PM i finally dusted off my xbox to give xbmc a try (it's a 1.0, and the dash was so old it didn't even have a version number in the system info), did the softmod using SC, and everything seems to be working fine, can anyone point me to an IR mod to allow me to turn the xbox on using the dvd remote (or maybe a uni-remote)? i've seen a couple out there, but looking for simple/easy installation (i can fabricate it myself from diagrams if needed), also does anyone here know with 1000% certainty if an LCD data screen can be added with a softmodded xb? from what i've read a hardmod is required, but i'd be willing to make myself a guinea pig (really just want to display the current time, maybe a few other things, but lets just start with the time)
gilbreen 03-07-07, 06:10 PM For the remote on/off, i went with:
http://xir.us/
I couldn't do the fabrication so I went with this prebuilt version on 2 boxes. Works great and very easy to install.
I also have my boxes softmodded but have never looked into LCDs so I can't offer any help there.
Scotty6595 03-07-07, 06:46 PM twelvepbrs,
I wan't to say that Goofygrin who has posted here before has an LCD on one of his boxes and I also believe his boxes are softmodded. I know that doesn't much help you at this point and time but it may be enough reason to do a little extra searching around for a hard answer.
On/Off Solution -
A nicer solution IMHO is the Xerc2. I have 7 hard modded xbox's in my house using this product. If you're not afraid of a little soldering and dismantling of your xbox and dvd dongle ... this solution is perfect.

Hey I think I have that one in my xbox! how do you do the on?off thing??
Hey I think I have that one in my xbox! how do you do the on?off thing??
The XERC2, once installed in your xbox, comes set up with the default button map for the Xbox remote, it will instantly work, no setup required. All you do is press the big green power button on the Microsoft DVD remote and it will turn on and off at will.
I highly recommend that you use the "safe off" function. You can read more about it's functions on the company website.
Do a google search for Xerc2 for more info.

Hmmm...regular xbox remote is fubar'd and I am close to pulling the trigger on a Harmony 880. I asume it can be set up to work as xbox remote?

Yes, no problem here using 880 through standard set-up
This has me a little confused...
I have 3 Xboxes, all running the latest build I could find (3/9/2007). I took the first one, and did movie information for all of the videos mapped (6Tb via SMB). I then FTPd the entire copy of XBMC back onto a PC, and transferred it to the other two.
For some reason, the other two are not seeing the movie information that the first one had.
This leads me to believe that something is being stored (D partition?) about the application. I haven't really had time to look at this yet, but was wondering if anyone had stumbled upon this before & could help shed some light.
Thanks.

been there done that. you can't move your database from machine to machine.. dunno why....
Sean
Must store it in the guts (kinda' like a registry?). I'll mess with it and see what I can come up with.

I don't see where xsfr'ing Xbmc from one machine to another would be a problem unless you have it setup for a static IP vs DHCP. If you have an external Video server (6TB) than the only file that is modified in Xbmc is the source file in Userdata usually on the E drive. (Xbmc/USDERDATA/SOURCE). Under workgroup(SMB) in that soure file is the smb links to your external drives. The only other thing might be if you have a firewall and it is blocking the requests from the new Xbox's. Keep us updated of your progress.
It doesn't make sense to me either.
I am linked to the movies just fine. I can watch & all. I just lose all connection with the meta-data contained in the database.
Quick question - Looks like I'm going to have two Xboxes on the same IR link. I realize you can re-edit the IR codes in XBMC, so is there a 'preferred' IR code set for the second box? I was thinking of some rarely used device, such as an Akai or Samsung DVD player. I can set it up in my Pronto, and then 'teach' the Xbox by having it read the codes. (a short way of saying having the xbox display the IR code, then editing the XBMC file with the code).
Or does someone have a set of IR codes already?
Thanks!
Ahh - never mind. Since the XBMC uses the RCP5 code set inherently, you cannot have two 'boxes on the same IR network. So I will set the on/off codes different on the second xbox (using X3IR) and just use the controller to operate it.
Why two 'boxes in the same IR network? I use one exclusively for music and movies, and the output is piped to two rooms plus the patio. But the one room has the second xbox so we can play games without affecting the music playing in the other rooms.
serfrat 03-14-07, 06:14 PM This probably has been covered before, but I can't seem to find the thread. When I go into my workgroup, under music it shows all the shared folders on my network including the video, and other non music related ones. I wanted to only show the ones that relate to music under the music view, and only my video folders under the video (file) view. Is there a easy way to edit this and only see the coresponding folders?
Scotty6595 03-14-07, 06:41 PM Sources.xml is a file in your UserData folder within XBMC. You can edit your bookmarks (media folders) to be media specific.
On the other hand I would have thought that setting your bookmarks from within My Music or My Videos would have kept those folders "specific" to that particular media... Are you sure you didn't set your bookmarks at too high a level in the directory tree or maybe set your bookmark to be your workgroup in effect giving complete access to every shared folder to your My Music and My Video's?
3 or 4 pages back I included an example of my sources.xml file in a post... Check it out, it may help solve your problem.
serfrat 03-14-07, 06:51 PM Great, thanks Scotty! I try that out :)
serfrat 03-15-07, 12:55 AM I tried to "Add Source" in the My Music Menu. It let me navigate to the "Add Network location" and Browse through the network to my computer, and then to all the shared folders. When I pick a folder and click it makes the click noise and nothing happens. I then back out of that and go back to My music, but I don't see that it added the folder.
Any ideas why this won't work from the XBMC GUI for me? (this seems like it would be the easiest way)
I then FTP'd over and looked at my Sources.xml file. I think it is shared at too high of a level. Here is what it looks like:
<!-- My Music shares !-->
<music>

I think I understand that I should put:
<path>smb://myipaddress</path>
Do I then put the drive letter and/or the folder name I want to share after myipadress?
Sorry for the Newb question....thanks
Scotty6595 03-15-07, 11:10 AM Yup, your bookmarks are set up at too high a level... Easy fix....
Here are how I have mine set up. Notice in My Video Shares that I have 2 folders full of DVD movies. They actually reside on two different drives. This is no problem for xbox and you can in fact have multiple bookmarks if set up how you see below. You don't have to use your IP addy for your path, you can use your smb://computer name/directory name and all will be good. I have it set up both ways and have no problems what so ever. If you have any problems just let me know and I can help you set it up.
*'s in my computer name are simply placeholders for the actual numbers for security purposes...

How does this work? I know you can vary the fan speed but what kind of mod can you do? My fan is fairly noisy.
sean_w_smith 03-18-07, 02:36 PM How does this work? I know you can vary the fan speed but what kind of mod can you do? My fan is fairly noisy.
These new builds automatically reduce power consumption using some power saving modes of the Pentium. in XBMC under System Settings you can turn on Auto temperature control which varies the fan rate to acheive a specific temerature instead of running at a fixed rate of 20% which I beleive is the stock behavior. Since the new power saving mode reduces heat if you enable auto temp mode the fan will run slower and therefore produce less noise.
In some of my boxes I replaced the 60mm fan with a Zalman 80mm fan and another quiet fan and result was good with the zalman and excellent with the other fan. can't remember which one. It was a lower CFM and even at 100% I was running 140+ CPU temps. Now I am ~120 and totally quiet other than some slight HD noise. (Very Slight). I have a pretty quiet 120g drive in there....

Question for the masses.
On the latest XBMCs, is there a way to group videos by custom meta-data.
In a nutshell, I'd like to be able to group the movies by the MPAA rating.
Ideas?

Suggestions:
1. write your own python script
2. make a feature suggestion to the XBMC authors...

Just curious, what kind of NAS (if any) is everybody using? I have 2 chipped boxes with 320 Gig drives in them, but need some serious storage for movies. Been looking at Infrant, but the price keeps me from pulling the trigger.
Has anyone used the WD My Book World Edition 2 for this purpose? Almost 2 TB's for around $800? Thanks.

I have heard that the WD My Books tend to go to sleep and cause delays when accessing the HD. (10 seconds to wake up and spin up the drive) You may want to go read some of the reviews to help make your decision.

I have a Infrant ReadNas, a Thecus N5200 and a Buffal Terastation all running raid5. The Thecus is the fastest and the buggiest by a huge margin on both fronts. The buffalo is the cheapest and the Infrant IMO is the all around best performer and value... Even the slowest (buffalo) is plenty fast for streaming DVD and video around the house...

You could also just buy the WD my book usb exteranl 500GB drives for $160 ea. (2 TB for 640 and use your existing PC with room for expansion)
I'm not using NAS per say, but I took an old Emachine (466 Celeron w/192MB sdram & 4.3GB HD with Win98) amd loaded it Ubuntu (Linux) and so far have added 2 320 GB and 1 250GB WD HD's.
Works great BUT I am now upgrading the Emachine MB/Proc/Sdram with a new system to handle future (MythTV/ATSC/Qam PVR tuner) additions. (Asus MB 865P, 512MB Sdram & 2.88 Ghz celeron D for 141 inc. freight. MB also supports dual core CPU's up to 2GHz and comes with video, 10/100/1000 nic, 3 pci, and support for 4 pata & 2 Sata drives)
You could use an existiing PC or put a new server together for around $200-$250. You could by the WD external (USB) MYBook HD's (Or fill up the newly built server with 4 Pata 320 GB Drive @ 85 ea and then expand using the usb external drives), so for a 1 TB system you would have around $550 invested using exteranl USB HD's. And for antoher 1 TB your cost would be an additonal 320, but as time moves forward prices will come down also. It would give you the flexibility of moving up into 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 TB of storage in thte future at great savings by just adding external drives and USB port expanders.
Anyhow, that is the way I'm going with my media server. Next I need to look at getting a rack mount server case for cheap.
PS. Just found the 4U rack mount server case for $59 less freight with 10 HD bays, fans and 450W sata compaitlbe PS. Looks good also, just what the doctor ordered.

Quick question.
I was cycling through the various skins and one I picked ended up with no text. I can't read anything. How do I change it back?
One more. The info button is not checking imdb for movie covers. It just brings up an edit title screen. How do I fix that?

I did this about a year ago and I just FTP'd in and deleted the offending skin and then rebooted... I don't know if that skin setting is located in userdata/some xml file or e:\udata e:\tdata but the technique I mentioned did work for me...
skins are in like...
e:\apps\xbmc\skin on my system for example.
IMDB support is in state of flux. latest betas seem better than say 4-6 weeks ago....

I just went ahead and updated to the newest version. Everything is fine, movies playing etc. I still cannot get the cover art back though. With the latest build, the info button does nothing.

As stated above ftp into your xbox and go to xbmc/skins and remove the skin that you activated. xbmc will default to pmIII and you will be good to go.
As for the IMDB issue, it seems there are some bugs with the last couple of builds. The developers are aware of this and as far as I know you will have to get a build from mid to later Feb. to get this functionality back.
Ahhh, living on the bleeding edge... Sometimes it kicks butt and sometimes it bites you in the butt....lol
Have patience folks, they will have it all sorted out shortly as usual!

I just upgraded to the 3-23 T3CH version. IMDB lookup is working for me. Be sure to set the content type of your movie folder to be "Movies" and also select IMDB as the info source. The lastest versions have added support for "TV Shows" content type so that it will query tv.com for tv/episode information.

You should read this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=807500), assuming you haven't already.
I have an pre-modded Xbox on the way, should be here this week sometime.
I have a bunch of mp3's that have never been properly tagged.
I have downloaded MediaMonkey to help me get these mp3's squared away.
My question is this:
When auto tagging from Amazon, I have the option to save the album art to either the folder or the tag.
Which is the best option for ease of use in XBMC 2.0?
jwheeler 03-25-07, 11:18 AM Does soft modding do exactly the same thing as hard modding? I soldered a chip into my xbox a couple of years ago and I have to tell ya I wouldn't do that again. Oh sure ppl made it look easy but its not that damn easy and you need a big magnifying glass and a super steady hand. I even screwed up a trace and had to buy a trace pen.
I'm going to bump this post cause I don't think I ever got an answer to it. If I decided to do another xbox will the soft mod do all that the hard mod will. What are the advantages of either besides the obvious surgery required.
Thanks for the help. I did manage to get IMDB working again, but now some of my movies don't play when selected. Is there a way to delete and re-import my movie list? I have my movies located on another computer's 500gb hard drive. All of the movies are in the same folder.
How do you set content with the remote? I can't get the controller and remote to work together. Do I highlight my movie folder and hit the white button on the controller?

Using the media center extender remote, pressing the "guide" button is similar to pressing the white button. I think you can clear your movie db somewhere in the settings menu, or just delete the db and cache.

i was under the impression that XBMC for the PC wasn't very useful, it's just a tool for skin/python developers, if they could make an XBMC for PC that was fully functional i'd probably ruin my pants, it'd be about as close as possible for one-stop-shopping in terms of a HTPC IMHO, i'd have to find a way to integrate tv recording/scheduling from my HDHomerun, then i could get rid of just about all my electronics except for my TV and audio receiver

I don't believe their is a specific button that simulates pressing "Y" on the remote. Remote buttons vary depending on what you're doing in xbmc. It's probably best to set it yourself in the keymap. I need to do this myself, right now I have to have the menu pop up and select add to playlist everytime.
jhatten99 03-28-07, 10:51 PM I have an pre-modded Xbox on the way, should be here this week sometime.
From what I have read this might be just what I'm looking for. Where can I buy a modded xbox that will play movies that I store on the internal or attached external harddrive? Once I get one of these modded boxes, is it basically just a basic setup/config or would I need to do some more stuff where I'd need to be familar with an xbox to do? Thanks

If you get the xbox premodded and preloaded. The main thing you will most likely need to do is make XBMC your default dash. you can request your installer to do that... After that its all about configuring XBMC for you TV, Stereo and your LAN. Once thats done you can ftp content (mp3's, movies, etc) to the hard drive assuming you have a large drive. One thing to note: XBMC doesn't support plugging in a large USB HD. Only Flash drives 8G or less. so if you want to store media locally you need a bigger disk...
Craigslist is a great source of premodded boxes locally...
Also the Xboxscene forums
Also sell.com like....

The number 0 on the remote will queue an item when you are in the music section.

That sucks. XIR uses 0 to power down the xbox.

Just remap the 0 key in keymap.xml to a different key. If done correctly it will only affect the 0 key in Music and while your in there take a look to make sure the 0 key is not mapped to another function in any other parts of XBMC.
2 things I wish the community would do for the developers:
1. Buy them all a HD TV so they can see the results of their fine work. (you would be surprised how many of the 4 or 5 main dev's do not own a HD tv.
2. Buy them all Harmony remotes so they can experience and then write a decent keymap.xml.
Maybe if I win the lotto one day I will do just that!

Yes. But you can call me lazy. :)
ChrisFB 03-30-07, 02:54 PM Yes. But you can call me lazy. :)
I feel you. I hate the keymap despite its fantastic utility. For some reason it takes me forever to get it right for my universal. I messed up slightly on 2.0 losing the back button sometimes and have been dragging my feet installing 2.0.1 just because of this.
New user to XBMC and I am hoping you guys can help me out there.
I am trying to get IMDb lookups to work for my ripped DVD's on the network.
I went out and read the wiki and it says "Under My Videos in the files view pressing the white button will bring up a context menu"
Ok but my problem is when I press the white button I don't get a "Set Content" option like they show here (http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/wiki/index.php?title=How_To_use_Scrapers).
Does this only work on local folders?
Can I use IMDb lookup on .iso files that are on the network?
If so, can someone explain the process to me? I'm feeling a little lost... :o
BTW, I am using T3CH 2.0.1 FAT

You need to get the newest version of XBMC. Setting the content was added after the 2.0.1 release IIRC. With the older version, you can look up the movie info by selecting movie info when highlighting the movie file. IMDB look up will lookup iso files.

Alright, so I finally edited the keymap.xml file somewhat. I ended up making the "*" button my queue to playlist button. Another needed change that I made was allowing the page up/page down buttons to act as chapter skips button. The media center extender remote has separate buttons for page up/down and chapter skip buttons, but my universal does not and I ended up only using page up/down on my universal.
Scotty6595 04-01-07, 01:16 AM Ah, not so lazy after all, huh? lol....
Life be easy with a custom keymap.xml....lol

Thanks for the reply.
Now I have another dumb question. :p
How do I get genre, and actor info to show up?
I get the thumbnails which are the most important, but when I switch view under My Videos to genre or actor etc. XBMC says "not available"
I know I am probably missing something obvious here.

I'm guessing you have updated to the latest version. Whenever you set your content and have XBMC scan all your movies, it should get all the movie info and etc for all your movies into it's database and the library views such as genre and actors should be working.
I have upgraded to the 03-23-2007 build of T3CH.
How do I get XBMC to scan all my movies?
When I am not in Library mode and I hit the white button on the controller, the query for movie info (or whatever it was called in 2.0.1 is not there anymore. The only option I have is to "manually add to database"
If I go into Library mode I get the IMDb option on the left side, but I have to key in the title of each movie manually. That is a huge PITA.
Isn't there a way to have it query IMBd on for every .iso file in a directory?
BTW, when I hit the white button in any view I still do not get a set content option on the menu. That is what is driving me crazy. Everything I am seeing out there is showing me menus that I don't get.
Yes, I have nuked XMBC and done a clean install. I still don't get these menu options!
This is driving me nuts and I am about ready to pitch this thing in the garbage.
