PooperScooper 05-22-06, 12:01 PM As I'm always looking for new (to me) music, and fusion and jazz are my current place to explore, I did order "Sonny Rollins - Saxaphone Colossus" that starcycle listed. While on Amazon, I came across this interesting list of jazz guitarists and sax player albums: http://www.amazon.com/gp/richpub/listmania/fullview/3JEJWBFOSZ6ZJ/102-7394366-4271303?%5Fencoding=UTF8
I got 5 or 6 CDs in flight, so I'll probably try one or two of the CDs listed next order cycle.

starcycle 05-22-06, 12:26 PM As I'm always looking for new (to me) music, and fusion and jazz are my current place to explore, I did order "Sonny Rollins - Saxaphone Colossus" that starcycle listed. While on Amazon, I came across this interesting list of jazz guitarists and sax player albums: http://www.amazon.com/gp/richpub/listmania/fullview/3JEJWBFOSZ6ZJ/102-7394366-4271303?%5Fencoding=UTF8
i'm sure you'll like the sonny rollins. that album is an absolute must-have classic, like "kind of blue." midnight blue is also great, and anything with kenny burrell is pretty much a winner. especially be on the lookout for jazz guitar players teamed up with jimmy smith -- burrell, wes montgomery, etc. or even with milt jackson the vibraphonist guy. grant green is excellent, too (solid, matador) and his "funk" period (windjammer, ain't it funky, etc.) is really infectious stuff.
KNIL SOT 05-22-06, 03:15 PM When I am not using my Mp3 player w/o the fruit, thank you.
6 disc in-dash is sweet but some of these discs need to be scratched...
Jay-Z - the black album
The Wiggles (my son will simmer down to the sounds of these silly geese)
Mike Jones - Who is Mike Jones
Dayne Cook
some other crappy hip hop mix CD I made back in the kaza days.
darthrsg 05-23-06, 06:44 PM Just got Stadium Arcadium by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, it is a double album. As of now Jupiter is my favorite of the two.
PooperScooper 05-24-06, 07:11 AM I don't know if it's available, but "Splendid" by Coryell and Philip Catherine is a real good one, also. Yesterday "Electic" with Larry Coryell, Victor Bailey and Lenny White arrived and I listened to it. WOW! It's a Chesky production CD and it sounds awesome. They do a "Black Dog" cover which is interesting and "Born Under a Bad Sign".

eric johnson & alien love child on hob (my rip, boot)
i've been on an ej kick since i went through a box of vhs tapes and found a few ej performances on pbs that i authored to dvd for posterity. i was lucky enough to see ej in small clubs in the early to mid 70s doing hendrix covers and was fortunate to see the electromagnets. of all his small stage performances (a lot as he was jamming throughout texas at this time) and larger venues through time, the one that stands out is seeing him at a local college playing solo in the coffe house. there were about 10 of us eating pizza and drinking pitchers, no one else there....ej playing acoustic sets with 10 friends in an intimate setting....priceless.

PooperScooper 05-29-06, 07:40 AM Sonny Rollins - "Saxaphone Colossus" Excellent!

larryI'm almost afraid to ask what one of those tubes cost these days (seeing what a niche item they are now).
I was eyeing those Grand Funk remasters in a store last week. There's definitely a couple I wouldn't mind having.
PooperScooper 05-29-06, 12:05 PM Tubes aren't expensive unless you have to have "new" ones from the 50's or 60's. Just like everything else, the ones they don't make anymore are always better (supposedly). :)
The only GF I really care about are the 1st three studio albums and the 1st two live albums. The remasters sound very good.

citizen arcane 05-29-06, 03:42 PM thanks PooperScooper for alerting me to the gf remasters. have them on order to (finally) replace well worn vinyl
PooperScooper 05-29-06, 04:56 PM Some CDs seemed like they would never come to the US years ago. I have 5 or 6 that I had to get from Japan. Now they've since been remastered and readily available. Just in case: Captain Beyond (first two CDs), Caravan CDs, Grank Funk Railroad CDs, and I just noticed - and ordered - Buggles, "Age of Plastic". Early ELP has also been remastered. Tarkus was a big win. Roxy Music in HDCD, too.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium
Depeche Mode - Violator (DTS)

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium

the double RHCP album is awesome, there are about 16 solid songs on this album!
chirpie 07-02-06, 03:42 PM Keane - Under the Iron Sea
Guster - Ganging Up on the Sun (The track Ruby Falls reminds me of what Pink Floyd might sound like if they were still makin' music today with a modern twist...)
PooperScooper 08-13-06, 04:42 PM Tunnels: Live - The Art of Living Dangerously - Percy Jones from Brand X - can't mistake his bass
Tunnels: Natural Selection
Hellborg, Buckethead, Shrieve: Octave of the Holy Innocents - a unique sound with acoustic 4-string bass (not upright), acoustic guitar and drums
Planet X: Moonbabies
Trio Beyond (Jack DeJohnette, Larry Goldings, John Scofield): Saudades - a tribute to Tony Williams
Alan Holdsworth: The Sixteen Men of Tain
Nomo: Newtones - this CD is awesome! World/African beat underneath a great jazzy horn section (and woodwinds and other stuff). If this CD doesn't get your toe tappin', you're dead. :)
larry
FredProgGH 08-13-06, 06:33 PM Cool, a Tunnels fan! I got to play a show with them a few years back and hung out with Marc Wagnon a little. He's a great guy. They were terrific. Percy is a monster bass player. John Goodsall showed up and played guitar on a couple songs. He was pretty out of it, unfortunately. His girlfriend was walking around with a huge live lizard in her purse. pretty weird stuff *lol*
PooperScooper 08-14-06, 06:07 AM I was lucky enough to see Brand X many years ago in Philly in a tiny club. We were bummed that Phil wasn't on drums, but the drummer that came was awesome. IIRC it was a young Kenwood Dennard(?).
Pick up Nomo's CD is you get a chance and let me know what ya think.

Turned-on, tripped-out, world-soul music. Truly an extraordinary album. This band has really evolved over the years and this, their latest offering, is by far their finest album IMO. Reportedly they put on one helluva live show too.

steve howe-skyline
shouldn't be pigeonholed as new age or ambient, w/ good flowing lines this intrumental release has touches of jazz, rock and latin. a great technical recording worth repeated listenings at one sitting.
eddie jobson-theme of secrets
you know of his work with zappa, roxy, uk, tull. playing the synclavier, he will transport you to other worlds.
tim weisberg-listen to the city
a '75 release that's oop, i recently digitized this lp. i forgot just how good this recording is. perhaps a precursor to "restive" type music, this is a relaxing concept album of one day in the big city. "listen to the city" is the highlight and a staple in his 70s concerts (of which i was fortunate to attend a few ).
mike oldfield-platinum collection
need i say more?
FredProgGH 11-04-06, 09:41 PM Weird you would bring up Theme Of Secrets. I was talking about that album tonight and lamenting that I don't own it and probably can't get it either. Will have to look around a bit... though I still prefer the Green album, secrets has some really pretty stuff on it.

http://braindamage.libsyn.com/
i can no longer find a working link to Dark Side of The Moon - The Doctored "remix" - v2.0 - a well mixed alternative version of the original and worth a listen for those who know the album note for note. a side note: Easy Star All-Stars' Dub Side of the Moon shows up regularly in the cd tray. who needs a reggae version of DSOTM you ask? you do! is the reply. this quote for a review says it all: "dub's psychedelic mysticism is a perfectly good match for Pink Floyd's mannered weirdness." right they are.

citizen arcane 12-12-06, 08:13 PM Sir George Martin (and son Giles) had access to the full Beatles catalog and remixed classics into this brilliant release. officially Love is a soundtrack for the cirque du soleil but also is a must-buy for all Beatles fans. there's a treasure hunt for snippets of tunes interspersed, overlayed and mended into the tracks: "Piggies" here, "Savoy Truffle" there and a "Hey Bulldog" riff over there. my personal fave is the progression of John's demo to the first two versions the band did on "Strawberry Fields Forever".
my media room is unfortunately in pieces right now so i haven't been able to play the included dvd-a version which i understand is infintely better than the cd, but have been enjoying the cd in both of my two channel rooms (am listening to "A Day in the Life" as i type this).
highly recommended!

PooperScooper 02-28-07, 02:04 PM Tis a shame. yes it is. :(
But your still a cooper fan. and thats good enough for me. :) I think around the time School's Out was released (and hearing the single 1 billion dollar times) I was moving more into prog rock - GG, Genesis, King Crimson, etc. AC wasn't "cool" anymore. Although, in high school, a band I was in did a complete cover of the Love it to Death show. :) I also caught Alice's hat at the end of a "Killer" concert I saw.
larry
cadbury8 02-28-07, 02:53 PM Oh yeah the dreaded "Schools Out". Its so overplayed its not funny. I once tried to get a radio station to play "I never cry" a very good balad on Goes to Hell but they wouldnt. Was the concert "Killer" or was it just that good? lol awesome about the hat. After a concert he put on in maine (which was great of course) he was staying at a local hotel and who should work there? My freinds mom. She met him and got his autograph for the both of us. I didnt get to meet him though. :( According to her he is a real nice guy. That kind of took away from the Alice Cooper image i had of him. lol
PooperScooper 02-28-07, 06:48 PM The concert was the "Killer" tour. Hangman's stand and all. They put on a good show. His only problem was beer back then and I guess he was a happy drunk. You never heard bad things about him. And now that he's sober he does charity stuff and such. Wiki has a good write up about him and the band. Also, I have a DVD of them in concert, I think around the Billion Dollar Baby time frame. I didn't think it was as good as when I saw the Killer show. Although by then they were problaby getting pretty burnt out. My favorite concert of them was the Love It To Death show.

I'll second that vote. I just picked this up yesterday. Make sure you get the version with the DVD/High Rez disc included. Not only is this a great Neil Young performance (I am a long time fan and actually saw him do a similar show about 9 months before this recording playing as the 'opening act' for CSN&Y), but the audio quality is simply excellent. Then when you throw in the fact this was originally recorded 26 years ago it really is amazing. It makes me wonder what the recording processes were for this disc, including the original master tapes, through the A/D conversion up to the final product. The equipment and engineers involved in all this were certainly top notch all the way. If anyone stumbles on an article about the recording process(es) for this disc please post it.

Shaded Dogfood 03-17-07, 02:11 PM I saw Alice Cooper at Wembley (sp?) near London in the summer of 1972. I was really going to see the opener, Roxy Music, which had just formed and still had Brian Eno in the band. Both bands were quite good.
I had an 8-track tape of the show Cooper had done at the old Municipal Auditorium in Atlanta, recorded off the air, as it was broadcast live (those were the days). It had great sound, and I had listened to it over and over in the car before going to England. The show I saw was virtually identical, song for song, almost note for note.
P.S. I too am listening to Arcade Fire's Neon Bible. At first I thought it not as good as Funeral, but now I'm not so sure.

larryI took the train to downtown Chicago Friday to spend the whole afternoon looking through the CD's at Virgin Superstore.
I saw a few S.B. CD's, but I'm not familiar enough with their stuff to know how much I'd truly like it and which CD to get first.
Any advice?
Anyhow, I was hoping to come away with more, harder to find stuff, but I did get:
"Voyage of the Acolyte" and "Spectral Mornings" (both remastered), by Steve Hackett, and
"Camel: A Compact Compilation", by Camel (on Rhino).
They all sound great - even on my Sony HX900 DVD recorder (which is all I've got hooked up right now, since I recently bought a new plasma and don't have the room for all of my audio components in the stand - but I'm workin' on it), The Camel selection is surprisingly good, and is truly the best stuff from their 4 best, consecutive LP's (Mirage, Moonmadness, The Snow Goose & Rain Dances). I've really missed listening to their LP's, and this should hold me over nicely 'till I get my turntable up and running again.
PooperScooper 04-01-07, 04:24 PM Spock's Beard are pretty good. Snow is a 2 CD "themed" work. It's ok, but it's no Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. :) V is better. Except for a few songs I heard on XM it's I've only listened to these discs once. Nowadays, just about all the "new to me" music that I end up buying I hear on XM radio, either on Beyond Jazz (fusion) or XM Music Lab which is, believe it or not, only available via the internet.
Voyage of the Acolyte is an oldie, but goodie.

You're right, they deserve to be ridiculed for an album title like that - if it's metal, it must be juvenile fluff.
Actually, it's a surprise I even bought this CD, since I usually base all my musical decisions on album titles.
They really should follow the lead of some of the prog bands out there - they really know how to come up with deep, intellectual, thought provoking, non-pompous titles.
FredProgGH 05-08-07, 08:56 PM Wow, way to take it personally! I like metal fine, and I'm sure it's a good album- I actually am really looking forward to hearing it. But that title does in fact merit much ridicule- as do most prog titles, in spades. So if you want to get me back feel free to pick on pretty much any Emerson, Lake and Palmer title :D

I guess I'm overly sensitive to anything that I perceive as metal bashing, especially if I think it perpetuates the "metalheads are knuckle-dragging mouth-breathers" stereotype. Sorry for jumping down your throat.
When it really comes down to it, there are tons of laughable album titles in every genre of music.
FredProgGH 05-08-07, 09:40 PM It's my bad too- I wasn't careful enough to make it clear I was picking on it playfully. Progheads and metalheads need to stick together! (Not prog-metal heads though- those guys can go screw themselves. And again I'm just kidding :D :D)

Fastnbulbous 05-15-07, 08:41 PM Dungen - Tio Bitar
This just came out today, and I love it on first listen. It's just the sort of retro rock I've been craving - Hendrix-inspired psychedelia, Jethro Tull style prog influences, and just really well put together songs. It doesn't sound stale at all, partly from the influences of Scandinavian folk, and partly because the lyrics are in Swedish so you can't tell how ridiculous they might be, heh. This is multi-instrumentalist Gustav Ejstes' fourth album, and he's just in his mid-20s. I like this even better than his acclaimed Ta Det Lugnt (2004), and expect more great things from him.
Colour Haze * Tempel (Elektrohasch GER) 06
Nice fuzzy sound, lots and lots of endless, repetitive riffing, need more/better songs, yet it continues to grow on me.
Priestess * Hello Master (Ace Fu) 06
Another young (Canadian) band finding their voice -- rocks hard, pretty varied fare between atmospheric numbers and hard and fast.
Sahg * Sahg 1 (Candlelight) 06
Awesome Norwegian doom rock. Sludgy, Sabbathy goodness.
Witchcraft * Firewood (Candlelight) 05
This is what stoked my appetite for more Sabbath-inspired doom/stoner rock. Since they hadn't come out with a new one yet, I sought out the others listed above, along with Wolfmother, The Sword, High On Fire, the Melvins, Nebula.
Peter Gabriel - 3 Melting Face 79
I had 2, Security and So and only liked a couple songs from each. Don't know why it took me so long to get this, it's pretty awesome. The paranoia and production reminds me of Bowie's Scary Monsters.
Sonic Youth * Daydream Nation 88
One of my favorite albums ever, I was listening to it while reading the new 33-1/3 series pocket sized books about it. A triple CD reissue comes out June 10, and in July Sonic Youth are performing it live in Chicago, and probably elsewhere. I highly recommend it -- the show I saw in fall of '88 was life-changing.
Dinosaur Jr. * Bug 88
Dinosaur were a big influence on Sonic Youth during Daydream Nation. Their first three albums were reissued in '05 and the band reunited. I saw them twice that year, at Metro and Lollapalooza. Not quite as loud as when I saw them in the 80s, but that's probably a good thing.

Would be nice to get it on CD if it's remastered.
Have you heard the new, boxed Genesis set, which include the CD's of "Trick" through "Abacab" yet? I was just wondering your opinion of the sound quality if you did (even though I wouldn't expect you to particularly be much of a fan of any post-Gabriel Genesis, knowing what I do know of your tastes). It's supposed to be remastered so that Collins' vocals are more upfront and you can hear the separate instruments more. They say to keep the last remasters, because they are truer to the albums, but that these are worth having for the difference. They are supposed to be "louder" and brighter, though, so they might not appeal to every fan.

As a recording engineer it's been incredibly frustrating for me to see how many people find the Genesis remixes not only acceptable but superior to the originals. I wondered how much manipulation it would take for me to make the original mixes sound as harsh and compressed as the remixes.
I took the first track from ...And Then There Were Three... (original Atlantic CD) and ran it through some EQs and compressors and digital limiter while A/Bing it with the remix.
Here are my final EQ settings:
+15dB @ 7.5 kHz shelving
+9.5dB @ 16 kHz
+9dB @ 1.5 kHz
+7.5dB @ 250 Hz
+4dB @ 50Hz
But it still wasn't quite harsh enough so I patched in a second EQ:
+7.5dB @ 3 kHz
+ 10dB @ 125 Hz
Then I hooked up my SSL compressor (the same one Nick used) and did 4dB of gain reduction @ 10:1 (the highest ratio it has). Still wasn't enough so I hooked up my Pendulum 6386 Vari-Mu compressor and did another 4dB of compression.
Now I was beginning to hear some similarities between the two. I also ran it through a digital peak limiter taking off another 2dB and we have a match. The kick drum and vocals are louder on the remix but the rest is pretty similar.
Here's the order of what you're listening to... Original Atlantic CD unaltered, the Remix and then the original Atlantic CD pummeled with EQ, compression and limiting.
Take a listen to the clip and let everyone know how much you still love the remixes

Rammitinski 08-04-07, 11:11 PM Yikes. I guess that kills that idea.
No wonder they're marked down to half price.
(I actually thought the original CD sounded the best, by far.)
PooperScooper 08-05-07, 08:37 AM I bought 2 of the SACDs - TOTT and ATTWT. NIN74's post pretty much sums it up. The SACDs sound quite bad. I'm not holding much hope for the Gabriel years discs.

PooperScooper 10-25-08, 07:13 AM I thought I'd revive this old thread since somebody created a new thread for essentially the same thing. Flowing from the last posts I'm (as others are) eagerly waiting the Genesis '70-'75 SACD set. Maybe we'll get lucky this time. :)
I haven't done much "new" music buying/listening lately since I've been spending most of my free time in the garage. From what I can remember the last "new" (to me) music I bought was The Kaiser Chiefs' "Employment" and Elbow's "The Seldom Seen Kid".

JBLsound4645 10-25-08, 07:21 AM (John Williams) "War of the Worlds" a few days ago excellent sounding what’s more, I liked the precession instruments beating away in the mix. I played the CD in Dolby stereo and the monaural matrix surrounds very exciting with the fullest uniform envelopment. Brought CD on the same day the film opened.

hermosotrozo 12-27-08, 11:38 AM I just got a copy of this Phenomenal album "Red Right Return". I love this artist, and 'If i were you' is my favorite. i think in the alt rock scene they are the most promising & upcoming names. They are offering their song "If I Were You"
as a free download on their website. i am listening to the same song right now, you can also check out this amazing song, sample is available at:

larryWell, things turned out quite nice. The 1970-1975 SACD boxset turned out quite well. I was worth the wait. Excellent old videos included also.

Rammitinski 12-27-08, 03:42 PM Wish they'd go back and re-do that first set, because I would also like that one.
Definitely will be getting the new one, though.
PooperScooper 12-27-08, 09:35 PM The 70-75 set was the only one I cared about and thankfully it was done quite well.

jcmccorm 09-03-09, 04:08 PM Resurrecting this thread because I remembered about it, and, because I've had Marcy Playground's latest one, "Leaving Wonderland in a Fit of Rage" in my CD player for a couple of weeks which is unusual for me. One of those CD's where I like every song.
Anyone else with some new stuff for this thread?
Cary
PooperScooper 09-04-09, 07:39 AM Most recent things I've bought are remasters of Thomas Dolby's Golden Age of Wireless and The Flat Earth. The former has a DVD included of his band performing in the 80's. It was quite interesting for me to see his stuff played lived - not all keyboards. You also have to check out some of the percussion used - played with a toy hammer. I also picked up his Astronauts and Heretics CD - newer stuff (90s?). But the best is his somewhat recent The Sole Inhabitant CD/DVD set. He plays live at Berklee School of Music in Boston. The CD is one of best quality live recordings I've ever heard. The DVD is a video of the performance. If you like Thomas Dolby, it doesn't get any better.

Sultans of Swing - The Very Best of Dire Straits
Johnny Cash - 16 Biggest Hits
Van Halen - Best of Both Worlds 1 & 2 (though I really only listen to the stuff with DLR minus a Sammy tunes)
Joe Satriani - Surfing with the Alien
Weird Al - Running with Scissors
It's probably been said somewhere in the previous 444 posts, but....
"What's a CD Player?"
Rammitinski 09-04-09, 01:31 PM It's a large box with a drawer that plays music in a better-sounding form than just about anything else out there these days.
We who still give a crap about the sound quality of our music actually still prefer to use them.
thor von clemson 09-04-09, 02:14 PM What he said....I prefer listening to music played on a cd player.
darthrsg 09-04-09, 04:17 PM I missed the boat but just pushed Rush 2112 into the ears and should have had a helmet on, because now I have to pick all the pieces of my blown mind up.
PooperScooper 09-04-09, 04:34 PM re: CD players
Here's an interesting paper on high performance (i.e. low jitter) USB hardware used in some newer DACs. The common USB hardware used in many extrenal DACs is inexpensive and prone to high jitter levels. http://www.ayre.com/PDF/Ayre_USB_DAC_White_Paper.pdf
I wouldn't mind trying the Ayre QB-9 or something similar. However, I don't really feel like ripping all my CDs and having to deal with a PC in my audio room. :)

Rammitinski 09-04-09, 06:05 PM Larry - have you seen this?:

(For more information, the original thread is linked to in the first post.)
I'd have jumped all over it myself by now, as I've been looking like something like that for a long time, but I don't know if I could live with that undefeatable "gap song separation" thing.

Have not listened to this in YEARS and threw it in last week and it has not left my player since. The "Here Comes Sunshine" is absolutely incredible and the rest of the show is very good as well, but that opening HCS....... Jerry is a mad man in this version!
