scrapdiggs 11-27-09, 09:03 PM Update on mine. It started making a wicked LOUD noise coming from the fan I believe.
Tried to take it apart and cant get into this sucker for the life of me!!
I cant recall where I bought it, it was either Costco or Sams but Costco cant find record of it, which means it was Sams and the warranty is expired.
Sooooo......who fixes these suckers?? Hate to toss away a projector that has been great overall and still has 55% life on the original bulb.
Any help is appreciated!!
scrapdiggs 11-27-09, 11:26 PM I think the thing making all the noise in mine is the bulb. Its got 50% left says the projector. I took every screw out of this sucker in an attempt to see what kind of chore it is to replace. I could not for the life of me get into the projector.
It just would'nt open!!
No problems with mine almost 4years old and on 3rd bulb I watch everything on mine, a lot of usage hours. No problems except that recently it will lose signal for second or two. Hasn't happened often though. can anyone tell me what number page the power cycle is on, or how to do it, think I need to do that.
IrmoGamecoq 03-02-10, 01:55 PM Well gang, I was an early member of this club (4/2006) and I can now chime in and say I'm no longer "happy" with this PJ as the bulb finally blew over the weekend.
I have no idea how many hours I had on it (I was at 479hrs on 7/17/07, which is the last time I posted about it at least), but I guess almost 4 years was a good run?
Dunno what route I'll go, whether with a replacement bulb or with an all new PJ. I'm sorta in mourning at the moment.
Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated...

Hey Pal
Don’t you just hate a piece of (junk) projector like this XR10X. I mean only 4 years of enjoyment before the bulb blows. :o
When mine blew I didn’t know what to do and it took me all of 10 minutes to decide to order a new lamp. I got mine off Amazon. For a couple hundred bucks you can be back in the , “I <3 my Sharp” club till 2014….:)
Did it fizzle out or end with a bang? Mine started to look dim for a couple hours and then BOOM!
I have a movie night lined up for this weekend. My brother in law bought 2012 and wont watch it unless he can come over and see and hear it big. We still enjoy the XGA as much as we did 4 years ago. I was looking around the other day and XGA projectors are really getting cheep. I don’t know if others have the PQ abilities the 10X did.
Make sure you keep us posted on what way you go. Even if you go for a new projector we will let you stay in the club.;)

I haven't had time to dig around and see what I can find on Amazon or Ebay yet...but for a couple hundred bucks, it will prolly make more sense to go that route than with a whole new set up for, I'm assuming, 2-3-4 times that amount. Plus, I've already got the mount and everything configured for the 10X.
When mine went, it just went...no dimming or other signs. It had gone out a few times before (like 6-10mo ago) and I let it shut down and then rebooted it the next day and it came back to life. No such luck this time. I even heard the tell-tale "chhhkkk" sound at one point when I was trying to start it back up. :(
Are you and I the only ones left in the club?
bud16415 03-04-10, 09:06 AM Thanks! :D

Mine was pretty easy to diagnose after the BOOM and letting the room air out a little I pulled the lamp box out and it was full of glass shards.
It could be just the two of us left. If you leave it will be down to one and I wont need a forum to talk to myself.
IrmoGamecoq 03-04-10, 09:11 AM I know mine lasted 4 years but I'm most curious how many hours I got. I hate that I hadn't checked that in a long long time.
IrmoGamecoq 03-04-10, 09:48 AM Okay, a quick check on Amazon shows a new lamp assembly costing just barely under $300.
However, ebay has a bare bulb itself for less than $200.
Which route did you go Bud?
bud16415 03-05-10, 06:32 AM AN-XR10LP is the lamp number I’m pretty sure.
I just took a look at prices and they seem to be a little higher now maybe 25 bucks higher. The lamp I got was the whole assembly, I wouldn’t mess with changing the bulb itself. The one I got was original Sharp lamp. Came in a Sharp box with all the paperwork from Sharp etc. Looks like that one was $265 now.
I say if you are still happy with the image you were getting and don’t want to go HD get another lamp and keep going. Even if I step up to a new HD projector soon I would go for the lamp and keep the XR10 for a backyard projector, or backup etc, but that’s just me.
Has anyone here tried using high altitude mode? if there is one on this pj?
I've heard a couple of ppl say its extending the life of their bulbs... not this pj though.
So if you use that mode, what sort of hours did you get?

I have ran mine in that mode from day one, fan on high lamp in eco mode plus I added a aux fan to move air past the projector and also a way to measure temp. Read the thread in my signature called “Keep Cool” The XR10X was never known as a super long life lamp projector. But I feel in my room and with my viewing habits I added to the length of the lamp some. I also feel maybe even more to the life of the projector by getting the heat away from the electronics.
IrmoGamecoq 03-09-10, 12:48 PM Thanks for answering that, bud. I wasn't sure what he meant by "altitude" mode...I've run mine in eco mode from day one though.

Did you get that lamp on order yet?
I got an iPhone 3GS about 2 months ago and being stupid I broke the glass face a week ago. Apple wanted an arm and two legs to fix it and that’s was with me buying the Apple care plan. Something like 200 bucks with 600 down till they did an exchange. I bought all the parts for 20 bucks and I’m doing a brain transplant on my phone this weekend. It makes changing that lamp look pretty easy. I think I might start a cottage industry fixing these if I can do it.
I most likely would have bought a new projector when my lamp blew if I hadn’t been letting people bring projectors over to try out on my screen. I know what everyone is saying about HD and 1080 and all that maybe it’s my eyes or seating distance, but I’m not seeing all that much difference when I’m feeding HD to the old girl. In fact we normally play the sharp a little and then test something new and they both look great to me and a couple times I thing the guys with the new projectors were shocked when we compared with higher ambient light levels.
If you do buy something new report back what you get and how it compares.
:)
IrmoGamecoq 03-09-10, 01:50 PM Bud - I'm actually going to wait a few weeks before making a decision, mostly as I await something to work out regarding a change jobwise for me.
If I go the lamp route, I'll definitely be here soliciting advice! :)
Mike Brantley 04-07-10, 11:11 AM Still here, still happy, still on first bulb at close to 900 hours. Nervous about it going out an an inconvenient time, so I purchased a new lamp to keep at the ready.
IrmoGamecoq 05-16-10, 10:21 AM Hey gang - I finally pulled the trigger on a new bulb (bought it from the ebay dealer linked here earlier), then let it sit at the house for a couple of weeks, and installed it last weekend.
Wish I had a how-to on installing the thing, I found some posts on the fix-ya site and ended up taking the entire housing off as a result...didn't realize all I had to do was take off the panel on the bottom.
Anyway, now that I have it installed, I'm getting light bleeding out all over the projector. Out of the fans, out of the top (where the panel is removed), etc. Anybody else experience the same thing? It's not a huge deal, my theatre already has a little ambient light and a little more is not a problem...I just want to make sure I didn't install something wrong, or have it cause premature aging due to more heat build up.
Also, I can't seem to master the button-push that resets the timer. Anybody else?

Glad to hear you are keeping the old gal running.
Wish I had known you were doing the lamp I could have ran you thru the steps. Sounds like the case maybe didn’t seat right when you put it back together thus the light leak.
Click on the above link on resetting the timer. I think you have to do it before you power up the projector if I remember right.
I will be down at Timber Lake in a couple weeks save me some sunshine till I get there.:)
IrmoGamecoq 05-18-10, 07:05 AM Hey bud - There is plenty of sunshine but it's already heating up down here! We had a week straight of 90+ temps just recently...
So, your PJ doesn't bleed light out through the fans on the side? I guess I need to disaassemble mine and figure out what I did wrong.

No mine does, and all the ones I have seen do that. I just figured you are seeing more or different light bleed than you saw before.
One of the things I thought was very smart of Sharp was the side discharge and the row of fans of that series projector. Unwanted light coming from the side has a much tougher job getting to the screen than out the front. Plus side to side air exchange lets you back the projector up closer to a wall if needed without blocking the air path. Don’t know why they change these things.
Great hot weather just what I needed once it gets to mid 70’s up here, haha.
Evilboy 05-19-10, 12:44 AM Heh, Bud and IrmoGamecog...I'm still amazed that this thread keeps popping up in the front page. I remember talking to you two years ago when I was still using this PJ. I've upgraded since but I still have my XR10X in the storage room...never got around to ebaying it or anything. It was a great PJ, I got to 1327 hours with it and never a problem.
I feel bad...I feel I should have done something with it, or sold it rather than put it to the side, but it's probably a little late now...
Gratz on keeping the fires going!
IrmoGamecoq 05-19-10, 07:37 AM Evilboy - You might have the record there on number of hours on the first bulb. I made it to 964 hours on mine, which was showing roughly 70% left. So much for that. Bud - How many hours have you gotten on your first (and 2nd) bulbs?
Bud - Yeah, it is definitely more light than before. I'll pull it down from my ceiling and see what I might have done wrong. Maybe I'll have better luck getting it mounted this time...I haven't yet been able to get it straight/centered since I remounted it from changing out the bulb.
olawlor 06-03-10, 06:38 PM I just had a weird problem with my Sharp XR-10X, which has been going strong on its original bulb since 2006 (about 1200 hours, mostly in "eco/quiet" mode). While watching normally, the projector went "SNAP!" and the picture vanished. I lost both the display, the fans, and all the LEDs on the projector, and the projector didn't make ANY sound at all when plugged in.
I let it cool for about a day. Same problem.
It's way beyond the warranty, and I'm pretty handy with electronics, so I started tearing into the projector--man, there are a lot of screws! I was inside the main cover, and just about to pull the main digital board and optics+DLP housing when I noticed some fat black wires running to a small black disk with a tiny red button, mounted on the front of the lamp housing: a thermal breaker on the main AC line? I pressed the little red button, and gingerly plugged the projector in again. Success--that fixed it!
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/2552/reddot.jpg
Just push the red button to repair projector...
Now, the house was over 85F when this happened--Alaska in the summertime is pretty hot, but we don't have air conditioning! Plus, there were four years of dust caked on the lamp housing. However, it's pretty silly of Sharp to put in a *non* self-resetting thermal breaker, especially one that can only be accessed by removing a dozen screws and pulling off the grey top cover!
Incidentally, I think it's really weird that a perfectly fine, working projector bulb reads infinite ohms on a multimeter.
IrmoGamecoq 06-07-10, 02:23 PM I believe the "little red button" you mentioned is the reset button. I believe it's in the manual, but I know I read about it when I was googling the manual when I replaced the bulb a few weeks back.
