sounds like the issue is your sharp lcd tv......it just ain't good enough.....like most lcd tv's out there with the exception of sony's bravia line...but I still prefer a good panny plasma tv over anything else out there for viewing hd..or dvds...pioneer's plasmas are right up there too....but those sharp aquos lcd's.....yuch!
Uh.......So you're saying I need to go spend another couple grand so I can fix the problem with my $120 dvd player. Not an option for me. This tv has been very good to me. Bought it last year when Target let em go for half price. I'm still amazed how good this tv looks with a good source, and especially amazed how good it does with regular NTSC.
Yeah, maybe my black level difference is the fault of the tv, but to suggest my tv is overall a piece of crap doesn't really help much. Sharp has made some very nice LCD tv's.
This weekend, I'm gonna either swap this sony for another, or try a different model, to see where the fault is.
pottscb 06-23-06, 02:25 PM I see. It sounds like the problem may be a non-anamorphic disc. If it's an older DVD (and the "The Ghost and the Darkness" was one of the earlier DVDs to come out), it probably isn't formatted for widescreen televisions and instead just has a 1.33:1 letterboxed image. This would result in the windowboxed image you describe when watched on a 16:9 television. Not much you can do other than zoom in (this is why so many of us argued against non-anamorphic DVDs 5-6 years ago). I know the film is available in an anamorphic version, though, so I could be wrong.
Have you noticed this phenomenon with any other (newer) discs?
Does anyone know Netflix or Blockbuster.com's policy on whether we get anamorphic or not? I've never seen a checkbox for widescreen...or 4:3, etc. Just curious.
pottscb 06-23-06, 02:32 PM Lots of other players don't do this...try an oppo 970/971 or a panny s-77/97.

I'm sure they use anamorphic if it's available. I don't think Netflix even existed until well after anamorphic DVDs became more or less standard issue.

those lcd's are not the best..they have lot's flaws in video quality..especially those over priced super lcd tv's that sharp was selling for 5 to 8 grand..and they were awful...they couldn.t give those away..or sell them because of poor video quality..last year was the worst year for lcd tv's..it was a big flop...so there were lots of get rid of quick sales...the plasmas kicked their butts hard with lower prices and superior video
PJohansson 06-23-06, 09:29 PM I was wondering if anyone knows if the Sony DVP-NS71HP that's sold at Costco is the Sony DVP-NS75H? Looks to be about the same price and looks the same. thanks
I called Sony support and, after much rummaging around, they confirmed that the specifications of the two units are identical. Not quite the same thing as telling me that they were the same unit masquerading under different names---but it was the best I could get from Sony. Hope it's helpful.

soldonandy 06-23-06, 09:33 PM Let me get this straight, the "You wouldn't" applies to my statement of why would I want to spend money for a DVD player that my TV already does?
So, why make upconvert DVD players? Are they a scam for fools like me?
They are, sort of.....The HDMI/digital connection was established first and foremost to protect copyright interests and secondly to sell another round of DVD players. The D/A conversion that is avoided sounds better in theory than the reality. There are some displays however, that partnered with the right DVD player can subjectively provide a "better" picture. There are tons of folks here that will claim "night and day" differences and plenty of folks that don't see any difference. Nothing wrong with seeing "night and day" differences, the hobby is alot of fun and I would never knock anyone who hears/sees benefits from various cables.
I re-investigated this, and the tv's contrast and black level settings are global. All other settings are individual to the different inputs.
You might try the different picture settings in the DVD player (hit the Display button on the remote twice) -- they affect black level and white level slightly. I found "Cinema 1" provides the most accurate output levels as measured by the grey scale calibration tools in my Lumagen VisionHDP video processor. Another setting might be better, though, for matching the output of the other sources you have connected to your TV.
Is this Sony a good choice for the SP4805 projector???

The info for Netflix is really buried in their website. Most of their movies are widescreen. If they have both versions there will be a place to select one of the two. If there is no box for format then you will probably get the widescreen version. However, the only way to tell for sure is to scroll down the description page and it will have the format listed.

Thats kinda what I thought. As a result, I got an inexpensive RCA with HDMI. The copyright thing makes sense too -- thats explains why some people are trying to hack their players to convert over component (I am guessing here) to get around the HDCP restrictions on HDMI.
Anyway, my experiment was successful. There is a slight improvement, but I didn't spent 200 for an Oppo or Sony unit. My RCA from WM has an MSRP of 99.00. I got it for considerable less and I am happy I didn't go the more expensive route.
rwestley 06-26-06, 08:29 AM I was in Costco yesterday and noticed that they have a model 71S, which is the same as the 75 but includes a HDMI cable. I guess that they made special models for the clubs.
craftech 06-26-06, 10:09 AM Why would anyone even consider this player if Sony was stupid enough to have the Zoom logo permanently fixed on the screen when you use the zoom? You might as well just watch regular television where they put the network name on the screen along with the programming.

Why is the zoom function so important?
I have this player, and previously had a Sony NS775 that had the same functionality, and to be honest it never bothered me since I very rarely use the zoom function.
I'm just curious why everyone comments/complains about the zoom function.

When I watch those ugly 2.35:1 squished down DVDs I always zoom as do many people. Why do I need to see a "zoom" logo that won't disappear after it tells me what I zoomed to. Even the cheapest DVD players don't do that.

Because even with this one 'wart' I've not found a player that produces as good of a picture & sound at anywhere near the cost of this player.
craftech 06-26-06, 11:19 AM Fair enough if it doesn't bother you. Some things bother some people and other things bother other people. If the logo didn't bother me I might have purchased one myself. It certainly does a lot of things right.

Yea, the 2.35:1 ratios don't leave much room for the picture, do they :). I normally zoom those myself. The "Zoom Logo" is annoying, but I've gotten use to it.

Oaky, that's reasonable, I guess. I just didn't understand why people wanted to use the zoom, that's all.
Anyway, I personally wouldn't want to make the trade off cutting the L/R of the picture to accomodate the height, but alas, that is my personal preference.
groth12345 06-26-06, 04:05 PM [B]Hi:
I am looking at the DVP-NS75H for my HD72 Optoma. Any issues I should be concerned about? Also, I see Best Buy has the DVP-NS750H. Is that the same model?
Thx.
It should be a fine match for your projector. Be sure to get the NS75H not the older (flawed) NS70H.
groth12345 06-26-06, 04:56 PM Thanks for the input but do you or anyone know if the ns750H is the same as the ns75H?
Bluewookie 06-26-06, 05:05 PM Thanks for the input but do you or anyone know if the ns750H is the same as the ns75H?
There is no Sony 750H, Best Buy just has the NS75H detailed incorrectly in their system.
If you have a Costco near you they have the NS71H which is the same as the NS75H except it comes with an HDMI cable (finally!) and Costco's forever warranty.
picaddict 06-26-06, 09:29 PM Hopefully someone here can help me out. I just picked up this ns75H and tried hooking it up to the grand wega III via hdmi to dvi cable and not getting a picture, a couple flashes, but no picture. A little background, I had problems with the dvi input on the GWIII and just had it completely swapped out by an authorized sony repair tech, so now my Direct TV HR10-250 works fine with the hdmi-dvi cable, but when I try the ns75, nothing.
I tried the ns75 on my vizio via hdmi only, works fine. So I know its not the player (works with vizio via hdmi), and I know its not the tv (works with HR10-250 via hdmi-dvi). I know its not the hdmi-dvi cable (worked with HR10-250). So anyone have any idea what it could be? Is it an HDCP thing where the HR10-250 is not affected but the ns75 is? I talked to sony tech support and they say my tv is hdcp compliant, which others here have confirmed......so any suggestions? Thanks for any input.
Picaddict: It would help us if we knew if the 75H's blue HDMI light is turned on when you are connected.
If your HR10-250 does not care about the HDCP checking on the display then a cable which does not pass a full signal might conceivably work for the HR10-250 but not pass muster for the 75H which clearly wants a full HDCP response.
Since you do have another HDMI cable that does work, maybe just trying an HDMI/DVI adapter (most anywhere with cables has them, if you are near one of the Radioshacks that is closing in a few days you might find one real cheap) could let you test whether it is a cable issue or not.
Melanotheron 06-26-06, 10:30 PM I am using an HDMI-DVI adapter from Monoprice.com and my player is working fine. I suspect it's your HDMI to DVI cable, because of what tbstbs said.
picaddict 06-27-06, 12:17 AM Thanks for the replies. Just got back from walmart and picked up a phillips hdmi-dvi cable. I've never been a supporter of high end cables (tried monster before and never saw a difference) so I figured this was just as good. The cable seems to be a decent quality cable. Anyhow, still does not work. Still getting flashes of a blue and red screen but no picture.
Is it the cable that has to be hdcp compliant? How can I tell if the cable is compliant? If I get a hdmi-dvi converter for an hdmi cable, isnt that the same as a hdmi-dvi cable?
Another concern is I'm looking at upgrading to HD-DVD down the road and if I cant get the sony ns75 to work with my tv....my chances of the HD-DVD might be slim to none.
picaddict 06-27-06, 12:20 AM Oh, the blue hdmi light does not come on. It did come on when I plugged it in via hdmi to the vizio, but not with hdmi-dvi for the sony GWIII. :(
kurt_fire 06-27-06, 12:22 AM Picaddict, it's sounding like your TV is the cause of the problem to me. Although it's strange it works with your DirectTV HDMI cable.
picaddict 06-27-06, 12:41 AM Yeah, I'm starting to think its the tv, perhaps a compatibility issue with a SONY dvd player, go figure. I literally just replaced the entire dvi block on it and my tv is supposed to be hdcp compliant so I dont see why it wouldnt work. Well if anyone has a Sony KF50WE610 that can get their ns75 to work via hdmi-dvi, please let me know!!

I returned one of those to Walmart after owning it for a week and a half, but in my case the signal juat quit. I ended up getting a DVI adapter for my HDMI cable which works fine. In the short week and a half the Philips cable was working it worked fine.

abumason 06-27-06, 05:11 PM Hey all,
been searching this thread and others with no success.
Does anyone know if sony uses the same upconvert technology in their HTIB systems, specifically the DX255, DX375 (low end sony) or any others?
My dilemma right now is that my old DVD (progressive scan Tosh) needs replacing and I told my wife that while we were at it we should add home theater. I was looking at the NS75 and an Onkyo 590, but from my research I'm not sure I need upconvert capability with my Grand Wega E42A10 TV.
Also, she thinks the Onkyo is "ugly", and is intimidated by the addition of yet another remote (she just managed to set up her 1st DVR recording last week after a year of having it).
So... I'm leaning towards an all in one DVD HTIB but not sure if:
1) I even need the upconvert/HDMI output for my TV (because it already converts everything to 720p)
2) if sony uses the same upconvert technology in the NS75 as their HTIB's or uses the older NS70 capability for interlacing, scaling, etc.
Thanks,
Thor

Thanks for the tip! I had just bought a 75 from BB this past weekend for $132.99, plus a $50 HDMI cable from RS.
Returned both today and went to Costco and bought the NS71HP for $129, which included a high quality 3ft HDMI cable. YIPEEE! Thanks!

I'd be very interested to know the answer to this as well. Specifically the DX375. Currently there is a very good deal on this unit and if it had the same upscaled PQ as the 75H and 85H I'll pick one up for the lake house. Anyone?

Thor,
Just thought I'd post my comment since I have a similar setup. I'm running the NS75H through my GW 50A10 using HDMI. I also have an old Toshiba Prog. Scan (SD-3800) which I've had good luck with. I bought the NS75 to try out an upconverting player for the first time. I purchased the NS75 because I had a coupon to CC and I got it for a good deal.
After using digital video essentials to fine tune my TV for the NS75, I did not notice much, if any difference between this player and my Toshiba. I tried 480P in both component and HDMI, and 720P and 1080i via HDMI. I ran it throught the following movies: Hellboy, SW Ep. II, Ep. III, The Incredibles, Scrubs Season 1, The Usual Suspects, LOTR ext., etc. I really can't tell much of a difference. I didn't notice much of a difference on the sound side either (toslink on both going to my Pioneer 1014). The sony may have been a bit louder, but nothing too noticeable.
I did see a few pluses for the NS75H...The first being less overscan via HDMI than my Tosh had on Component. the NS75H measured less the 5 overscan all around (according to DVE) while my old Tosh was closer to ten on the top. The second plus is I was able to dial in the colors more accurately with DVE on the Sony than the Tosh. Whether I will be able to see this when actually watching a movie...I don't know. The last thing I noticed is that the picture setting (contrast) on my A10 had very little effect on the brightness while using the NS75H. On my Tosh, the contrast shot the brightness level up and down when I changed it. Also, during the pluge w/ white test on DVE, there was little to no change in the black level on the ns75H, while the Tosh black level changed a good amount and started to crush some blacks.
My 30 days are almost up, and I still don't know whether I'm going to keep this player or not. It seems to be a better match for the A10 according to DVE than my Tosh...but my eyes can't see much of a difference. This may be more than you asked for, but I just thought I'd put it out there...Thanks, Nick
I recently got the Oppo 970HD to compare to my Sony NS75H. They both provide great pictures. But if you want a picture that can be zoomed to fill your screen and still look good, this is a no-brainer. Get the Oppo. Sony missed the boat on this function. Whoever decided that you'd have to zoom by a minimum of 2x and that the zoom logo can't be hidden ought to be fired. The Sony is going to ebay.
Whoever decided that you'd have to zoom by a minimum of 2x and that the zoom logo can't be hidden ought to be fired.
I couldn't agree more! What MORON decided that the 2x logo should stay on the screen?? That zoom function would be awesome otherwise, especially for the old non-anamorphic widescreen movies that show as 4:3.
This is really irking me!
groth12345 06-28-06, 09:05 PM Check out the Circuit City website! Special pricing for on-line purchase. Just got mine. Looking forward to trying it with my Optoma HD72. Anyone out there with this combination?
Steve
CT_Wiebe 06-28-06, 10:37 PM CincyNick -- Check your NS75 manual. There are settings (defaults?) which can crush whites and blacks. Make sure these are set correctly. Mine doesn't using the component connections (I don't have an HDMI/DVI capable display right now).
abumason 06-29-06, 02:32 AM cincynick,
thanks for the info. I figure that whether I use the HDMI or not, the NS75 is the right player for me. If I can't see any difference, I'll just hook it up with component (progressive only) and take the cable back. (not a costco member, plus I have best buy rewards from when I bought my A10)
As for the HTIB, the two-way speakers in the Onkyo 590 should perform better than the sony one-ways in their low-end stuff, plus the DX375 doesn't have enough inputs.
I guess I'll just pick up a Harmony remote to keep the wife happy.
later,
Thor

Claus,
I appreciate the tip, but it was actually my Toshiba SD-3800 that experienced a slight black crush during the Pluge w/ white test on DVE. The NS75H was not affected by this test at all, which impressed me. I have the NS75H on standard (passes Blacker than Black) with all of the special settings, i.e. Black Level, Noise reduction, Mosquito, etc. set to OFF. I was hoping for minimal enhancements (other than upscaling) by the player before sending the signal to my TV.
As I said, according to DVE it seems like the NS75H is the better player for my display, but I can't see it with my eyes...even in dark movies like Hellboy where shadow detail is awesome I see no difference. Maybe I need to check other movies, but I've almost exhausted myself comparing the two players.
I have a couple more days with this player. I figure I'll mess with it once more tonight and make up my mind to keep it, or just wait out the format war (if there is one) with my trusty old Toshiba...which I feel puts out a very smooth filmlike picture.
Thanks,
Nick
groth12345 06-29-06, 10:16 PM Hi:
Just set up my Optima 72 with the Sony at 720P. Getting some image jitter periodically. It basically looks like the projector is vibrating slightly at times, but I don't think it is. Any ideas what could be causing this?
Thanks.
Ok let me start by saying...How is any normal person supposta figure any of this out. As I am educating myself about all that is HT over the last few years, I keep thinking...if I was a normal person who didn't know or care what Blu-ray/Mbps/1.3/spyware/rootkits/Linux/FlashDrives/PS3/HDMI/component/720/1080/progressive/DTS/Superbit/Infinifilm/DualCore/Cat5e/Megapixels/etc. is/was or are (like most of our moms for instance) [aka sheeple] I would still be watching Nemo on a 19" color TV from 1990 hooked up with a coax cable and thinking WOW does that look good. ...Things that make you go hummmm.......
Everytime I pick up some new piece of info on HT (latest is what I am about to type about), I get to spend more $s on a fancy new thinggy for my HT. Even tho I almost fall off the couch stunned by how good stuff sounds and looks when I watch a movie now. Depending on the movie, sometimes I don't even catch the plot cause I am going “Wow that looks cool!” The last one was Butterfly Effect - that blurry/quick cut thing they did scared the crap out of me as I was watching all alone at 2am. It was neat! Glad I am not a sheeple! :) Although I am not so patiently waiting for Nov 17th so I can stand in line with a bunch of them. :)
Ok on to the SQUIFT problem...
Mine:
85H to a 51A projector on a 110" 16:9 1.5 gain screen over a 35 ft HDMI premium level cable (I also have a component set wired in so I can show people the difference).
Got the 85H after almost getting a 70H (you guys all saved me) and was thrilled that the aforementioned shift problem was not present. Been watching movie after movie (100s of them in all kinds of ratios and formats) falling off the couch when something cool happens or some awesome colors show up in a flick. Everything looks awesome (screen ratios locked in, colors calibrated, sound balanced, etc). So I ran out of good movies to watch and popped in Days of Thunder (NK is hot). Because I haven’t been in "look for weird stuff" mode for a while it took me a few minutes (the length of time till that movie got stupid) to see that people looked fat and the T/B bars were huge.
I chalked it up to stupid movie...stupid masterer/transfer agent. Then I popped in another older 2.35 flick (True Lies) and the tires were oval, camera lenses were egg-shaped and the lifesaver-ring was SQUIFT. huh? Immediately pulled up AVSForum and searched around - read all the 2.35 stuff again (Newly found out about “Constant height and lenses”) to make sure I wasn't missing something and poked around in here catching up. I tried setting every combo possible over HDMI on both the 85H and the 51A res settings/4:3 settings/wide settings and couldn’t get it to work like it should. I got it to look just ok with major bars on the sides or 2xZoom on the screen all the time (they really need to fix that). This seemed eerily similar to the shift/squish problem of the 70H so I switched over to component just to see if it was the same or not. It was slightly less squished (actually almost normal) but the PQ was crap as expected, the key however is that it was different in more than just the res. There is something going on with the scalers in one or the other (or both) of these things and the mastering/transfer process on certain DVDs. ~Sound familiar anyone?~ To me it seems like on the 70H they used Days of Thunder (for example sake) to calibrate/setup ratio configs which screwed up all normal movies and with the 75H they used normal movies to calibrate/setup ratio configs and screwed up the movies that probably looked ok on the 70H. Along with the squish there was also a very noticeable shift. It really showed up when zoomed (the bar on the top was only 1", the bar on the bottom was 4-5"). Insight anyone?
amrcc, I think I understood what you were trying to say. So I will respond this way. I'm assuming your projector works the same as a TV.
You said older movies looked fat and squatty. Most likely you are referring to non anamorphic DVD's. Since HDMI/DVI locks at full, there is no way you can use the zoom feature on your set to stretch the image up.
For those movies, you have to use the component input and use the zoom feature on your set. In addition, you also have to set the player's reolution from HD to 480P. According the the 75h user manual, the component input tends to stretch the image, except when in 480P resulution.
So are you saying that the player is adding bars to the signal that already was mastered/transfered with bars?
if so, it shouldn't do that :)
Anamorphic = mastered in 2.3x:1 without bars - vertically stretched to fill the frame with a higher resolution, correct?
PS. Nowhere in the manual does it reference anamorphic.
or for that matter :) If you play a movie mastered/transfered crappily in 1990 ie. Days of Thunder, you will have to switch to component and put the TV or PJ in 4:3 mode to horizontally unstretch the signal and then zoom the screen at a reduced PQ.
I'm thinking I'm gonna put a sign at the entrance of my HT that says:
This screen has been modified to coverup the inadequacy of Movie Studio and Home Theater equipment manufactures to bring you the highest quality movie experience possible.
(or wait maybe the blue Zoom2x in the corner says that for me)
How are we supposta program the remotes for our moms to be able to set the Player and TV/PJ in different modes for different DVDs to look properly?
Note to remote manufactures: Add enough memory to the next gen to hold the entire IMDb and sync up display modes depending on the DVD.
or Maybe we could make a set of glasses (available at a store near your for only $19.99) with unanamorping lenses you could wear if people look too skinny or fat when you are watching a movie. Perfect gift for mother's day.
Even when I get the picture watchable (nothing cut off the sides) at the lower PQ without the 2xZoom on the screen there is a shift upwards. The bar at the top is about 1" and the bar at the bottom is 5".
No, the player is not adding black bars to the signal. It's just that those DVDs you mentioned are non-anamorphic. Most TVs don't have stretch/zoom modes for those when you use the 720p/1080i output from an HDMI player. You should be able to change your player's output to 480p via HDMI and use the TVs zoom mode to get the movies in the proper aspect ratio. Or if you don't mind the extra cables, use the component output as suggested previously for non-anamorphic DVDs.
Taxman71 07-05-06, 10:33 AM For those who have paired the NS75 with the Sony A10, does the A10's remote do a good job of operating the 75 player (access DVD menus in addition to the standard play, stop, FF, etc.)? I am trying to decide between the Sony NS75 and Oppo 970 for my 50 inch A10. Using a single remote with the Sony would be nice, but the card/USB reader on the Oppo (plus SACD and DVD-A) might be a worthwhile tradeoff. TIA

I looked at the Sony NS 75 on the A10 and it looked nice but the strengths of the Oppo were to numerous. I've got the 970 calibrated now and it looks fantastic on my 42A10 (Oppo recommends the 971 for anything over 42" though) plus the zoom icon on the Oppo goes away immediately and doesn't on the Sony. The cardreader and USB, DVD-A, and SACD support is extremely nice as well.
Taxman71 07-05-06, 03:08 PM That's the tradeoff I am still pondering. Sony gives added convenience by being able to use one remote for both while the Oppo has every bell and whistle I could want, except for the remote issue. One thought is that the Oppo can serve as a stand-alone player in the event the inevitable HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray does not support current media.
I guess I could always get a Harmony remote and resolve the issue for good, but I am still hedging a bit.
i grabbed one of these DVD players off CC the other day without much research, now I am debating wheater I should keep it or return it and get a better one. One of the things that I don't like is that I have to stop playing the DVD in order to make any changes to the display settings. and the menu's aren't too pretty/user friendly i'd say. any recommendations on other players with HDMI?
acrappa 07-07-06, 11:55 PM I was in Costco yesterday and noticed that they have a model 71S, which is the same as the 75 but includes a HDMI cable. I guess that they made special models for the clubs.
I bought one today, thanks to your heads-up. So far, I am happy with the player; the quality and features list are nice.
CT_Wiebe 07-08-06, 07:41 PM geem -- Quite a few players require that you stop the player before making changes (especially the newer ones). The new Oppo 970H is a good choice for a little more money. The Oppo 971H is better but only using the DVI output, its component output is not very good. See the threads on these players.
I have the NS75H and consider it a very good player, which satifies my needs.
kurt_fire 07-08-06, 07:56 PM How can I get into the options to adjust the picture settings? I'm talking about Cinema 1, Cinema 2, etc.

I think I know what you're looking for. Press Display twice to get to that menu, and then select MEMORY. Here you can adjust the brightness/sharpness/hue/saturation.
acrappa 07-09-06, 04:40 PM Zoom on this player is completely useless. Even if you can get over the zooming logo being fixed on the screen, the player automatically unzooms randomly between 5 seconds and 2 minutes. I thought it may be a defective player so I exchanged it for another, and the new player does the same thing. I've hooked it up to a different TV, from HDMI to RCA, and it always does this. Otherwise the player is quite nice.

I'm real curious, I hardly ever use zoom; what are you watching that you'd want to watch full motion video in zoom for over 2 minutes?
Grimdeath: I know I have a few movies that are widescreen letterboxed, but are not 16x9, so zooming them avoids the absurdity of watching Pillarboxed-AND-Letterboxed movies. I am handling it at the set itself right now, but it would have been nice having the choice to do it with the player.
Fortunately for me I am on LCD but for those with Plasma, being able to zoom can enable them to avoid burn-in issues with a variety of materials.
Finally there are those who just can't stand chunks of black on their screens dispite our attemps at education. ;)
acrappa 07-10-06, 01:41 AM As tbstbs said. To get rid of the black bars. This can't be done with this Sony player because it unzooms at seemingly random times.
CT_Wiebe 07-10-06, 01:52 AM If you absolutely need the zoom feature, get an Oppo 970H or the Oppo 971H.
I have this player hooked up to a Toshiba 56MX195 DLP tv. My biggest disappointment is not with the equipment but with movies that don't fill the screen. Crap, I have a 56" Television and only 2/3 of the screen is being used. I do understand older videos being non-anamorphic but even some of the newer movies have black bars at the top and bottom of the screen with the standard settings.
My TV does have the ability to enlarge a picture to different "theater" modes so you don't see that Zoom logo from the SONY but I think it distorts the picture quality.
Also, I find myself making changings on the DVD player and then making changes on the TV (i.e. contrast, color, brightness etc..) - its enough to drive ya nuts. Its like the TV can over ride the DVD settings and vice versa so who should serve as the "master", the TV or the DVD player. Any other Toshiba owners have any tips on their TV settings and the Sony settings?
I am new to this stuff so go easy on me!
Your TV has a 16:9 aspect ratio (close to a 1.78:1 aspect ratio). Many newer movies are shot in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, wider than 16:9, hence the top and bottom black bars. If you use a zoom function to fill the screen, you'll be cutting off each side of the movie. You can find a more visual explanation of this at:
http://www.rexer.com/cine/oar.htm
CT_Wiebe 07-10-06, 11:30 PM sufan -- Ok, the easy version. You are a victim of marketing propaganda. The site that mraub posted tells you the true story of aspect ratios. If your display is set to show 16:9 (1.78:1) pictures, any movie/video that is not shot/recorded as a 1.78:1 source will show black bars on the top/bottom (wider, more, than 1.78:1) and any in the old 4:3 (1.33:1) TV format will show black bars on each side.
If you use your displays zoom/stretch mode, then you can fill your screen at the expense of either distorting the picture or losing picture information. In either case, you will not be seeing what the director intended. If you didn't get a widescreen display, you would have even bigger black bars, so you have gained, in the long run.
NOTE: Widescreen IMAX movies are shot in the 1.78:1 format and will not have any black bars on your display.
Thanks for info. I also have the option of using the builtin Theater Modes of the television which makes the picture bigger - guess I just have to decide if it offers better quality vs the zoom function. This forum is very helpful!!
Bought the NS75H. Very happy with its performance. I won't say the jump from 480p to 720p upconversion is all that great, but I can definitely see $130 worth of visual improvements. The sound is much better than the cheapie Philips progressive scan player I replaced as well.
This should hold me over nicely 'til next-gen dvd settles itself out.
Taxman71 07-12-06, 06:13 PM Is it safe to assume that the NS55 is the same as the NS75, except without HDMI and upconversion? If so, that is quite a deal on a good player for those who can't or don't want HDMI.
CT_Wiebe 07-13-06, 04:21 AM It's hard to say. The Sony site is not responding tonight (except for it's main page). Since it is supposed to be an "upgrade" of the NS50 and the NS75 is definitely an upgrade of their NS70 (it uses newer designed chips), the odds are that the NS55 might also use the new chips (without the up-conversion feature).
I will say the my NS75H does an excellent job using its component outputs to my backup PJ (no HDMI/DVI input) on a 106" screen. My 720p PJ is dead right now, so I can't use the NS75H's up-converting feature at the moment.
Update: I just got through on the Sony site (I had a PC cookie problem). The descriptions of the 480p processing are the same, but the NS55H may not use the latest chip design that the NS75H has (it's not as new - the NS55H has been out for at least 8 months and the NS75H was released only 2 months ago. My previous comment may not be true. The only way to tell is if someone has the "inside dope", or has disassembled each one to see.
Taxman71 07-13-06, 07:51 AM Thanks for the info.
bertschb 07-14-06, 12:32 AM Sorry - newbie question and I just spent 3 hours researching this player (and ordering from BB web site) so I'm too tired to search. Please don't flame - just ignore if you think I'm lazy.
Question-
Can I use the HDMI connector on this player to connect to the DVI port on my Sony 60" GWII? I have an HDMI-DVI cable. I just need to know if this player will upconvert using this HDMI-DVI cable?
Thank you for your help!

Yes, you can use an HDMI-DVI cable to connect this HDMI DVD player to your DVI GWII. I am also using an HDMI-DVI cable for my 50" GWII XBR.
alinski...
bertschb 07-14-06, 08:26 AM Thanks guys!
I had a chance to sell my GWII for $1,800 but I chickened out. I wanted a new TV with dual HDMI rathe than a single DVI connector but it sounds like this DVD player will connect to the DVI port so my TV is good for a little while longer.
Sgooter 07-16-06, 06:23 PM Today I tried a fully loaded (4+GB) MP3 DVD in this Sony - 75H and it played just fine...almost like endless music. It was a very quick test, so I didn't check out whether it would do random/shuffle play.
WaldorfSalad 07-16-06, 11:12 PM I've been able to do the same thing on my NC85V changer but discovered to my dismay that the stop/resume postion memory feature won't work with MP3 DVDs. It always restarts back at the beginning. Is it any different on the NS75?
Taxman71 07-18-06, 07:51 AM Could the non-shuffle of MP3s be fixed with a firmware update on the NS75/55?
I couldn't find an answer to my problem using the search engine, so I hope I'm not repeating something discussed ad nauseum, but here goes---
I bought the NS75H when it first came out and have had no problems at all really, except for today. When I turned it on, I didn't get a blue HDMI light, and the TV screen only showed black with quick flashes of light every 2-3 seconds on the bottom 1/4 of the screen. This happened once before briefly, but I quickly discovered that I had inadvertently moved the channel selector on my Philips LCD to a channel adjacent to the one I needed for the DVD player. I assumed that was the case this time as well, but the channel was already on the correct one. I have a HDMI-HDMI link, and that hasn't been touched since I initially installed the NS75H. I tried all of the trouble-shooting suggestions, except for replacing the HDMI cable. I don't think that that is the problem as it has been working fine (as has everything else) all along. I just wonder if one of my kids may have touched something on the display/remote that could have triggered this problem. Any ideas? Thanks a lot.

I failed to mention that the DVD player seems to be performing correctly, except for the blue HDMI light. The time counter is working, etc., just no picture/sound.

thetman 07-22-06, 05:26 PM I just recently took the plundge and picked up a new 50 inch panny plasma from costco-with dual HDMI. I also picked up a sony DVPNS71HP DVD player that upconverts via HDMI- the problem is I hooked up the HDMI to the panny but for audio I connected the Digital coax from the dvd player to my B&K ref 50 (like I did my previous player). But now the B&K doesn't reconize the digital signal (dolby or DTS). does this have to do with the HDMI cable? I'm confused-am I hooking thisup right. I went into the menu of the player and told it what connections I wasusing, any help appreciated

check the cable connections on both the dvd player and the tv..hdmi cables have a tendency to loosen since they do not lock in..if that does not work try a different cable...it doesn't matter what channel or video input you have you tv set on to..the blue light comes on immediately when you turn on the dvd player and it links up to tv via the hdmi....so you either have a connection failure..or your player is defective

I already tried reconnecting the cable, but that didn't help. Maybe it's just defective, it's a GE from Target for ~$40. I'll try another one; I hope it's not the player. Thanks.

thetman 07-23-06, 12:57 PM sorry guys-don't want to be a pain but-still trying to get an answer- I hooked up the sony via HDMI to my panny plasma and hooked up the digital coax for sound to my preamp (as I did with my previous player) but the processor does not reconize a digital input only prologic. Did I hook this up right? I know you have to go into the menu of the player to tell it to turn on digital and dts. I just had another thought about your problem. Did you check your DVD settings to make sure they are set for DTS? If it's an older DVD, maybe prologic it all it will output.

I just got this sony the other day and it worked fine, then tonight I put in a DVD and am experiencing the exact same problem you are.
avsmurf 07-24-06, 08:32 AM As tbstbs said. To get rid of the black bars. This can't be done with this Sony player because it unzooms at seemingly random times.
The zoom doen't unzoom randomly on me, but it does have that 2x display logo on screen that won't go away. Otherwise it works well for preserving original aspect ratio on non-anamorphic letterbox movies (480p, zoom to 2x)
Oh well.. back to the store for a return.

yes I did check this I also tried a few warner dvds-which go straight to digital ontheir own and nothing-I am returning the player andmight pick up another-not sure, it is wierd because obviously the coax connectionis working- or I wouldn't have any sound at all? but as soon as I hooked up my older player it picked up the signal right away- so it has to be the player. we'll see. I just wanted to see if all this upconversion is noticeable on my set as opposed to just using component fo rnow.

thetman 07-24-06, 05:50 PM well I picked up another one from costco and hooked it up- looks pretty good- I did notice an improvement after tweaking. Yes, everything works great-infact i again did some more tweaking and I am impressed with the picture-definitely an improvement-even the wifey noticed. For $130 I have no complaints so far- seems to load alittle slower than other player but thats no biggie. Of course I still can't stop reading the threads about the Toshiba HD player (never happy-always looking for improvement). but hopefully costco will have these or the next models on sale- (can't beat the return policy) anyway-can't wait to watch some more movies. starwars ROTS looked awesome!
mogambo 07-26-06, 08:43 PM i asked this on another thread to no response. am hoping it may get some here:
i just connected a sony ns55p dvd player to my panasonic th-42pwd8uk. pressed the progressive button on the front panel to select progressive video output. changed the tv type to 16:9. now, what aspect do i select on the tv? i'm still getting choices for normal, zoom, full and just. is it the same situation as with the set-top box? i.e. if i'm getting these choices does this mean i'm not getting the right signal?
in the dvd player setup there is also an option for 4:3 output. this can be set to either full or normal. in the manual it says that if the tv can change the aspect ratio then i should set it to full, if not to normal. but for "normal" it says "shows a 16:9 aspect ratio signal with black bands on left and right side of image". i can't really tell which one i want to select.
any and all help appreciated.
Bailey151 07-27-06, 12:49 PM DVD player = 16:9
Panel = normal or standard (no zoom, stretch, fill, etc)
Last option is progressive off or on - test & see which one looks better. This will depend on which unit has the better scaler.
gkaminag 08-01-06, 02:00 PM I apologize if this is covered elsewhere here or in another thread -- it's somewhat
difficult to search for this...
I know this player does audio in fast/slow.
does it or the ns55p display subtitles in fast/slow playback?
thanks in advance
Mogambo: I just recently tried out the Full/Normal option out with a disc that has 4:3 material that is letterboxed. On Full it zoomed in so that the letterboxed material was treated as 16:9 material eliminating the need to try the goofy zoom that has the annoying 2x displayed over top and it looked much better this way (at 1080i) than trying to zoom at the tv. Without the zoom on Normal the material shows on my widescreen tv as black bars at left and right as well as bars at the top and bottom. Very silly. Give it a try and see what you think!
Just to give a live reference to the guy who posted about the Toshiba HD player, I just returned my sony ns-75 and sold my panny s77 and bought the HD-A1...mostly because of it's upconverting capabilities.
I can absolutely confirm everything that has been written about this player...it is just on another planet. Upconverted movies look enough like real HD to probably fool the avarage viewer. Best DVD player I have ever seen...and I have not even viewed HD discs yet.

No problem at all. You can send the sound via optical, coax or regular old RCA red/white. The beauty of this player is that all ports (audio & video) are live all the time unlike some other makes. I think most folks run the HDMI picture to their display and then run digital audio to their surround sound system, I do.

Rory_Gilmore 08-07-06, 08:09 PM Hello,
I just have a quick question for all of you.
I've skimmed over the thread and I'm still unclear on this issue.
I purchased the 75H and received and set it up today.
I find the picture to be spectacular. But I did not know about the 85 5-disc player until I read some posts in here.
Has anyone had or seen both of them operate? I'm not worried about shuffle functions or how long it takes to change discs or anything trivial (for me).
I simply want to know if anyone knows if the overall quality and , in particular, the picture quality will be exactly the same.
While it would be nice to have the 5 disc, there is no way that I want to take any risks and send this back for a player that may have had more reported problems, bugs or issues that I'm unaware of. Or that simply doesn't duplicate the 1 disc player in picture quality and sound.
It seems like most of you have the 1 disc and yet the 5 disc is only like $10-$15 more, so I'm wondering how you made your decision.
Finally, when using the HDMI cable, of course I get audio through my tv speakers when playing a dvd despite the fact that I'm using a sound system. Is there a way to turn the audio part of the HDMI off or do you all just turn your tv speakers off or all the way down to zero when you're watching a movie?
Thanks for your time.

Finally, when using the HDMI cable, of course I get audio through my tv speakers when playing a dvd despite the fact that I'm using a sound system. Is there a way to turn the audio part of the HDMI off or do you all just turn your tv speakers off or all the way down to zero when you're watching a movie?
Thanks for your time.I've both. PQ is same for NS75 and NC85.
You can't turn off HDMI audio in the player so you'll need to turn off your TV speakers or set vol = 0.

Do you like both?
I've read so many comments about how the pic quality of these units is really no better than a progressive scan player, but when I got this unit set and put in "Pulp Fiction," I was literally blown away by how good it looked.
I would say that it comes very close to looking like a real HD picture and for people who aren't incredible videophiles (like myself), I'd be hard pressed to say there is much of a difference between true HD and what I'm seeing with this upconversion player. (I know it exists, I'm simply saying it's pretty hard to tell for the average person).
Does anyone else agree?
Randy
Update: I hadn't tried to troubleshoot the problem since I experienced it a couple of weeks ago, and wouldn't you know it, I turned it on today for the first time and it worked fine. I hadn't touched a thing since the time of the problem--DVD player, remote, HDMI cable--nothing. Big mystery, but it's OK now.

Rory_Gilmore 08-08-06, 02:26 AM I'm going to have to withdraw my previous comments.
I was excited and Pulp Fiction did look brilliant, but I think it was a combination of a very good transfer and my excitement.
After trying several other dvds and then Pulp Fiction in a standard progressive scan dvd player, I don't think I can say the picture is spectacular at all with this Sony.
In fact, it's only slightly better than what I had with progressive scan Sony.
I don't see what the fuss is all about. I could fiddle with it forever, but there's no way that it's close to what I see on my HDTV channels like CBS, ABC, etc.
Not even close.
It's simply a better, smoother, clearer picture by a little (maybe) over progressive.
I feel pretty let down right now. Because it is a tad better, I still thinking about keeping it, but I really was expecting a lot more.
Do you all really get PQ than resembles HD quality, because I just don't see it and even with improvements of changes to the settings, what I do get won't go from what it is to anything close to true HD?
I don't know what to do. Damn.
WaldorfSalad 08-08-06, 11:31 AM IMHO, its unreasonable to expect an upconverted DVD to come close to a true HD picture. After all, the DVD is still native 720 x 480i and there's only so much you can do to make it look better. I would say you can expect maybe a 10-30% improvement over a regular DVD but if you're expecting it to be twice as good you're going to be disappointed. Of course, YMMV. :)

I guess I feel the same as Rory_Gilmore. I got all excited when I hooked up my player and now I'm really giving it second thoughts. I don't consider myself an audiophile/videophile... but I do enjoy a nice picture. I wasn't expecting anywhere close to HD but the improvement offered by this DVD player is either minimal or all in my head. I think the color looks a little better than my cheap 480i player but maybe I just did a REALLY good job of calibrating the new sony and need to spend a few more minutes with my other dvd player.
I'd like to try another dvd player or two (like the Oppo 971) but I just don't know if a lot of people really overreact about how good upconversion is or if I really don't have the eye for that sort of minimal difference. Maybe you can't tell on a 46" LCD and need a projection system to really spot the difference... I don't know.

10% is about what I would say I got. And that wasn't enough for me to justify keeping the player.
There is a new oppo (their new flagship) in the next few months and I will try that and hope to get the 30% or maybe even slightly better results with that.
If not, then I will wait and see if a player and new technology does come out in the next few years that actually does find a way to make standard dvds look much closer to HD-DVD.
Does anyone think that will eventually be possible?
I just think it has to be something they're working on, because too many people have hundreds and hundreds of dvd already and when HD-DVD finally becomes the standard, players and discs are cheap, the masses are going to pay a lot more attention and are going to be VERY angry that all of their dvds need to be replaced.
That's simply not something the large majority of people will be able to do and those people will want "something" to be done. Anyone think that will be something that eventually does happen, that is, a new technology or one being developed, that really does allow a much better picture for standard dvds?
Thanks.

This is all just my $.02, so take it for what it's worth!
The quality of your display's electronics determines the improvement you'll see, if any. I don't believe scaling is "rocket science", but de-interlacing is. Any display builit in the last year or two by a manufacturer of any repute should be able to do a decent job upconverting a 480p signal to its native resolution. I believe that's why it's difficult to see much of an improvement in picture quality. The older or less sophisticated your display's electronics may be, the more of an improvement you should see.
De-interlacing is another story. When you compare 480p to 720p or 1080i, all three resolutions have been comparably de-interlaced by the DVD player, so again, you shouldn't see much of a difference. Try comparing 480i to 720p or 1080i, and you'll see just how good (or bad) your display's de-interlacer truly is.
De-interlacing is where a good player can make more of a difference these days, IMHO. Again, just my $.02.

Dr. Cheesesteak 08-09-06, 11:44 AM I've been trying to work my way through this thread to find the answer to this but... well.. it's a big thread...
I just picked this player up yesterday and have it hooked up to my 42" Sony A10 (LCD RP).
I've been trying to do some calibration on it, but haven't had a ton of time to get it just right so I'm not exactly thrilled with the performance yet - although it is already a lot better than watching movies on my XBOX360.
What I'm wondering is, what is the general consensus on all of the different image enhancement features the player has, including the color settings (ie CINEMA1, CINEMA2)? If I have AVIA, is it best to just set everything to OFF and then calibrate from there, or have people found worth in the supplemental settings to get the best picture? Is there any particular feature of this player that most of you swear by?
Also, I noticed a lot of posts about the player upscaler vs. your tv's upscaler. Is this player essentially a gimmick? I mean... am I better off setting it to 480p and letting my TV do the rest? Or am I getting the most milage out of it by setting it to 720p?
I needed a better DVD player either way, but it is a little disheartening to read some of the comments about the scaling technology.
Bailey151 08-09-06, 12:11 PM including the color settings (ie CINEMA1, CINEMA2)?
According to the manual only Cinema2 pass better than black. I used this setting & calibrated from there.
although it is already a lot better than watching movies on my XBOX360.
Just my .02 - if you had a standard player then upscaling might be a nice investment. If you already had a progressive player likely improvements will be small.
High Def DVD are in another league, to expect that from any upscaling isn't too reasonable (but then you paid about $100 vs $500+).

Can't say, each set is different. On my display I get the best result by setting the output to 1080i & letting the panel scale it back to fit (42" plasma). This tells me that my display (pixelworks) has a decent scaler but a so-so de-interlacer. Only true way to know for certain is to test each setting on your display.
Likely results are pretty similar to DVD vs Superbit DVD - an improvement, but not like DVD to HD-DVD.

I'm pretty sure that the 360 is at least progressive, but the DVD player on it has some pretty bad issues. After calibrating I usually pop in Finding Nemo just to see how it looks, and on the 360 when there is a lot of fast motion with fish swimming around or whatever, there is some serious macroblocking. That was my main concern (with all movies, not just Finding Nemo :) ) and I haven't seen that at all on the Sony so far.
The other issue was that color/brightness settings for games and DVD's seem to be radically different. What looks good for my DVD's was generally way too dark and undersaturated for my 360 games, so this player was at least worth the price of admission to get those on separate inputs with their own settings.
As for HD-DVD, I certainly wasn't expecting that, but rather just looking for something to work nicely with my current setup and DVD collection until the format wars are over. I know I'm still looking at a 480i/p picture, but mainly I just wanted out of the 360 to do so. In fact, I watched a little bit of Blu-Ray in Circuit City yesterday, and while it was nice looking, there is no way I could justify the purchase at this time.
Pretty happy with the player overall.. just looking to get the best image possible.
wall9062 08-09-06, 12:39 PM I have this player hooked up to my Philips 37'' lcd, 37PF7320A/37. I have the picture set to 4:3 pan scan format. I was assuming I could use the 16:9 format, but the PQ on this setting is terrible. Is this normal to have poor PQ on a 16:9 tv when the player is set to 16:9. I am having great PQ with the 4:3 pan scan, but the top and bottom bars cut off half of my screen size. I am hooked via HDMI, with upsacaling set to auto. Just wondering if i could get some feedback? Thanks

Have you tried setting the upscaling to a specific resolution as opposed to auto?

That's about what you get with the Sony - nice picture @ a nice price. Sorry if my post came across wrong, just given my .02 of what the unit can do vs what some expect, not saying you were in that camp.
Have you tried setting the upscaling to a specific resolution as opposed to auto?
Yep, use the info button on the TV remote to tell you what it's sending to the screen - then change to the others & see what works best. 16:9 is the ratio you want, should be able to find a signal that the unit likes. As I mentioned for me it's 1080i even though the display is 720p(ish) native. If I set it to 720 or 480 the picture looks like crap - test them all with your display (under menus -> HDMI output -> select one).
You'll still get the black bars (top & bottom) with some movies, that depends on the aspect ratio of the movie. Two most common are 1.85:1 = no bars, 2.35:1 = black bars.
wall9062 08-09-06, 03:10 PM Have you tried setting the upscaling to a specific resolution as opposed to auto?
Yeah, both 720p and 1080i, same PQ.
ne1scott 08-09-06, 03:21 PM I bought a Sony DVP-NS75H recently from Circuit City for $130. I love the player's looks and hookups. It seems to play any DVD media type I throw in it without any issues like my old player had. I have connected it to a Panasonic 53x54 RPTV and am using 1080i through the HDMI input and am using the optical output to send the sound to my Denon home theater receiver. Have you found any recommended settings guide besides the basic information in the book ?
Rory_Gilmore 08-09-06, 09:17 PM Just before I pack and ship my Sony back, I wanted to check one last thing.
Many of you have posted that you can tell what resolution is coming through from your player to your HDTV.
How?
Some have said you press the info button and I have that button, but it doesn't do anything.
I've tried it during dvd playback and watching tv and nothing happens.
My TV is the Toshiba 57H94 and I can't seem to find anything that lets me know what is coming into the tv, 480, 720, 1080...I just don't know.
Can anyone please help me?
Thanks.
Not sure on your TV but my projector always flashes the resolution in the upper right corner for about 5 seconds during warm up. It reports (accurately) 540P when I set the Sony to 1080i, which by the way is what this unit excels at. Much better than 720P for some reason.

no, my television doesn't flash anything.
Rory_Gilmore 08-09-06, 09:50 PM In the menu settings, you do have choices for setup such as film or video in cinema mode and mine is set to video.
There is also a choice of 540p or 1080i in display format and that's set to 1080i.
I have no idea if these setting have anything to do with my dvd player playback.
I have the display format set at 1080i because it's the better setting, I thought for incoming tv and dvd sources.
But I still see no way of telling what is actually coming through during playback on my tv screen to see if the dvd player is even upconverting at all or at its best.

tak1610 08-16-06, 08:53 PM I fail to see why so many of you are worried about the zoom feature. You buy a nice big widescreen 16:9 TV, and you resort to cropping the sides off the movie, by zooming it, just so you don't see black bars or want a "bigger" picture. This is just like movies that are released in 4:3 aspect ratio. They crop the sides. You might as well just buy a 4:3 movie instead and play it on a 4:3 TV.
I have a 4:3 32" SDTV, but watch all movies in their respective format, even if they are in widescreen 2.35:1 format. Zooming in on widescreen material is almost as bad as stretching 4:3 out to 16:9. And I've seen plenty of people doing this on their TV's. Even in retail stores. It looks aweful. As someone else has stated, there are many aspect ratios, and 16:9 was a compromise for the home. It won't show any 2.35 or other hollywood movies full screen. Only broadcast or specially filmed material at 16:9 will fill your widescreen HDTV.

I can think of 2 reasons to zoom. If you have a plasma screen TV and are worried about burn-in and second, if you just want the picture bigger. The 2.35:1 format makes the picture smaller. Even though you have more picture, side to side, the whole thing is smaller. This is probably OK on a 50 in. screen, but on a 23 in. screen the whole picture is tiny.

Because I am conditioned by watching mostly 16:9 broadcasts on my 50" and 42" displays, 2:35:1 looks annoyingly small to me. My DVD player allows zooming in steps, however, so when I'm watching a movie that I feel can afford to be cropped (The Pink Panther, e.g.), I find 1.5x zoom offers a nice compromise between picture size and black bar width. If I am watching something like "Lawrence of Arabia", however, I will leave the the zoom alone.

frankenberrie 08-17-06, 10:18 AM I have the Sony KDF-E55A20 (55" LCD) Television and recently purchased the Sony DVP-NS75H DVD player.
I read thru this entire thread and it seems this player is loved and produces a great picture and might I add the sound is really good. My problem is on my setup the picture looks Fuzzy & kinda blurry. With my TV set to defaults & the DVD player set to cimema 2, I ran the THX optimizer from the Starwars DVD and it looks like the picture improved a bit but there still something wrong with the picture.
I tested my setup using Underworld, Starwars, Fear & Loathing, Van Helsing, & Nemo.
Now I have a question. Could my HDMI cable be causing this problem. I forgot to grab one at my local BB so I picked up a cheap brand:
Philips 6-Foot HDMI to HDMI Cable (pic attached)
I did try de & re attaching it but no good. Any suggestions. Thanks
kurt_fire 08-17-06, 10:59 AM I would like to be able to zoom my 2.35:1 DVD to where almost no black bar exists. But I can't do this on my Sony. With 2x zoom being the smallest, it's still way too large. I don't understand why Sony can't just put a whole lot of zoom levels like Panasonic does. Also, even if the Sony had lots of zoom options, I still wouldn't use it if it stayed on the screen and not fade away.
thetman 08-17-06, 01:45 PM okay so far the sony seems to work pretty good with my 50" panny- bu I watched V for vendetta and yuck! anyone else have anyexperience with thsi movie- I thought it looked bad-darks were very blotchy-alot of banding, overall soft and slightly grainy. The worst part is I had some people over to watch the new set..a little embarrasing, I had to put on some HD programming quick to save face. Just wondering if it was the player (via HDMI) or the movie-anyone else have any experience with this movie. Star wars Eposide III and Pirates of the Carribean look great though.
thetman
I just got one with my new Sony 50 lcd and is it great!
I never thought this player would be worth the upgrade from my Sony progressive scan. Let me tell ya, It ROCK's! The picture qty is as good as Directv HD. I have only watched 4 Brothers so far and it just looks amazing compared to my 1 year old PS player. Well worth the money to upgrade at $115.00
biswasd 08-17-06, 10:57 PM quick question: Do the clear white keys on the remote control every light up??????
Mok Dan Lan 08-20-06, 05:04 PM hi, just found this great forum (newbie!) and i thought i would ask a question or 2.
i see from this thread a lot of people talking about not being able to get blacker than black unless switching to CINEMA 1 on the NS75H.
i just went through a whole big mess of dvd player tests and store exchanges, which led me to the sony player. generally, i use the advanced video test from THX on "The Incredibles" to verify this BTB function.
i have to say, that unless i have misunderstood that test, i see the BTB's perfectly even in STANDARD mode. can anyone contribute to this? have i missed something?
also, the NS75H has custom color, brightness, sharpness (... etc etc) settings. is anyone else changing these to improve image quality? i left everything at the centre, which i assume (perhaps incorrectly) means 0 change (or least intervention by the dvd player possible). am i right about this or has anyone else found different conclusions?
anyway, any help would be appreciated.
thanks.
mok- are you using hdmi or component?

I don't use my Sony remotes anymore but I remember the DVD remote on my old Sony DVD player had luminescent buttons that need to be charged up under a light source before they'll glow. Re-charge under a light again as needed to make them glow again :)
Edit:
I dug out my remote tonight and held it up to some lights. No glowing buttons :(
biswasd 08-21-06, 01:00 PM Thanks Dirk: I thought about the glow in the dark possibility, but i could have sworn that i read somewhere that the buttons are electronically powered and therefore glow on their own when pressed.....however, i may be wrong.
rwestley 08-21-06, 01:36 PM The Oppo 970 costs the same as the 71S and Oppo provides great service. It can also be made region free and there is a hack to let it upscale over component.

i have yet to see them light up. maybe im not leaving it under the light enough.
How does one make the signal not come out stretched when watching a DVD such as Friends?

Go to the Screen Setup menu - the bottom item is '4:3 OUTPUT'. I think you change that to 'Normal' so that you'll have black bars on the left and right of 4:3 shows like Friends. Look at pp. 63-64 in the manual (those are the page numbers in the PDF version). I have mine set up the way you want, but I'm only able to look at the manual right now and not my actual settings.
Thanks JimSD. That did it.
Mok Dan Lan 08-23-06, 06:10 PM i didnt realize the remote was a big deal for people. im usually just happy it works.
i also try not to watch tv in the dark... bad for the eyes. maybe if i build my dream home theatre one day...
sigh.

Poob Bubes 08-24-06, 01:27 AM I have my player connected to my DD/DTS receiver with TOSlink... what is the optimal audio setting to use 48hz or 96hz?
CT_Wiebe 08-24-06, 06:42 AM Poob Bubes -- That depends on your receiver (read its manual). With some receivers, the 96KHz won't work (and it's Kilo-Hertz, not Hertz - if it were Hz, you would only hear 20Hz to 24 Hz, not the full 20Hz to 20KHz audio spectrum). If your receiver will accept either (48KHz or 96KHz), you should use the one that sounds the best. If you want to be on the safe side, use 48KHZ, that is what is standard for older DVD (and CD) audio encoding.

I don't know what defines "extremely quiet", but I can't hear any noise out of my 85H, except when it is changing discs or first starting up. Once the disc is spinning, I can't hear anything.

With the 75H, you can hear some motor noise when -
1) loading the disc
2) skipping tracks
But while a movie is playing, it is quiet
bytebuster 08-25-06, 01:22 AM Hello,
Can you all tell me if there is any motor noise from this DVD player? I'm looking for an extremely quiet DVD player.
Thanks,
Casey

Mok Dan Lan 08-26-06, 11:11 PM that is a "thread" (no pun intended) i prefer not to pull at.
just keep the volume up, you won't hear anything.
:)
caser85 08-27-06, 10:08 AM Thanks all for the replies. I don't mind motor noise while skipping tracks... it's a constant motor noise during movies that I'm worried about. It sounds like the Sony is fine during normal playback.

Something odd happened last night. I put the widescreen version of "While You Were Sleeping" in the player and it came out with black bars on all four sides of the screen. I saw a complete picture but it was quite small. I immediately checked the settings and everything on the player seemed ok. I then threw in "King Kong" and it used the panel in all of its glory. When I put WYWS back in, it again showed the movie with black bars on all four sides.
Any idea what's going on here?

Even though that DVD is widescreen, it is "non-anamorphic". It will display as a 4:3 picture, but letterboxed. Anamorphic widescreen DVD's contain a flag to tell the player how to handle the picture. On non-anamorphic widescreen DVD's, you'll have to use your TV's zoom feature to fill the screen's width. Although, from what I've read, on most tv's, the zoom feature is non functional when using 720p or higher. In this case, you would have to set your player to output 480p/i, and then use your tv's zoom. Unfornately, the 75H's zoom feature is useless for this task.
caser85 08-27-06, 06:54 PM I've got one more question before I buy this sucker. How are the lights on the display? Are they bright? For instance, I own the Pioneer 1015TX and the blue light on the front drove me crazy until I covered it with electrical tape. Will I have to do the same with the HDMI and progressive scan light on this? How do these lights compare to the 1015TX light?
Thanks,
Casey
Melanotheron 08-27-06, 07:38 PM I can't compare the two lights, since I have never had a 1015TX, but I can tell you that the 75H has a dimmer function in the setup menu that allows you to dim the HDMI light. When I first got mine, I thought the blue light would bug the heck out of me, but I hardly notice it.

caser85 08-27-06, 09:39 PM Mel,
I've glad to hear that you can dim the HDMI light... that should help quite a bit.
Ok, silly problem here. I have this DVD player connected to a projector via HDMI. Granted my cable is long (about 50ft), but this has worked just fine since I got the DVD player when it first came out (forget how long that has been). Now, starting today, it doesn't work. The HDMI light never lights up and the PJ never receives a signal... Any ideas?
Melanotheron 08-27-06, 10:27 PM Mel,

Caser - The dimmer just tones down the light about 50%, it doesn't turn it all the way off. I didn't want to give you the wrong impression. It also dims the display readout on the front of the player.

stkorn97 08-29-06, 10:25 PM hello all, i picked up one of these a few weeks back, and i love it, i was playing dvds on my xbox 360 before it, so this was quite the step up. im running it on a toshiba 46hm95 set that i picked up for cheap so i couldnt pass it up. ive still yet to run a calibration disc on the set, which is one of the things ill probably pick up as soon as i get an answer to my question in other thread. haha. but so far, im loving this player, looks very nice and audio is crisp (using coax) sorry for the rambling with no real purpose, new here, figured id chime in on something i know a little about atleast.
caser85 08-30-06, 07:53 AM All,
Picked up the player yesterday and I love it! It's super quiet, which I like. The video looks great... I was able to dim the HDMI light like others mentioned.
BlackKnightInNC 08-30-06, 09:08 AM I'm sorry to intrude, but I recently purchased the surround system with the NC85H. I read somewhere that it is the same player except with a five disc changer. I have had some issues with HDMI on my new set (Hitachi CRT 57f59), and have switched to component. Does anyone know if the hack for this player would be the same, and if so, what is the hack? Thanks.

Hi BlackKnight, there is a whole discussion about the HDMI issues on the Hitachi 57F series in this thread http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=700130 .
I have the same setup as you do, and experience every kind of hdmi issues. No one as figured out what could be the reason, sadly.
Mok Dan Lan 08-30-06, 05:10 PM nothing, and i mean nothing, is as bad as the SAMSUNG 960.
that is the WORST bright light of all time.
the sony is a blip compared to the cornea-burning-cataract-inducing laser in the samsung.
and yes, the sony dimmer kicks ass.
the article in this month's WIRED was pretty accurate when it said sony was losing its edge, but, i think they still do some things right. besides, i had my trinitron 27 inch for 17 years, and it's still better than half the crappy CRT's out there today.

caser85 08-31-06, 11:36 PM Are you guys sure there's no way to disable audio over HDMI from the player? I'm starting to realize taht this could get annoying... The only way to turn off the sound is to disable speakers or mute on my Panasonic TH-50PX50U. Any suggestions?

subwoofer 09-02-06, 04:18 PM I can't find the answer but there is a way to hook up this DVD player via HDMI and also have the digital output on at the same time?
Of course. I have mine hooked to my projector via HDMI and the sound to my reciever via optical. All outputs are LIVE on this unit all the time. You may have to turn the volume down on your TV (fed from HDMI) but that's about it.
I just bought the NS85H and wondered if it could play any dual layer MP3 DVD discs?

Again yes, that is how I have it hooked up to my Samsung. Big downfall is that you cannot turn of the audio that is being passed via HDMI. So you have to turn down the volume on the tv.

I'm always surprised by how many people have their audio piped through to their A/V receiver yet still use their TVs internal speakers for whatever reason.... I just can't figure it out.
Both the digital and optical are always active.

Not me. I haven't listened to my TVs speakers for over 2 years. Why bother?
I think I am going to pick up this Sony DVD player at Best Buy tomorrow. I figure that if I don't like the quality (doubt it) and if it shows macroblocking, I can always return it.

Wife. (or kids) :)
But slowly having them switch to only A/V receiver. :D
caser85 09-03-06, 11:03 AM Yeah when my wife watches standard def TV she likes to only use the TV speakers. With this pain of muting the speakers during DVD playback though, I'm tempted to run everything through the receiver and try to get her used to it.
jason978 09-03-06, 01:32 PM I have read the entire thread. several people have said that this player delivers better sound than other players.
How is that possible?
It was my understanding that all the DVD player did was pass the dolby digital signal out the digital output and that the receiver did all the work. Am I missing something??
betterdan 09-04-06, 05:52 AM I have this player and the picture is definately better than the 400 disc Sony changer I had before but as for the sound I really hear no difference.
can anybody recommend a good settings with this set up? specially people who have the same set up as I do. right now everything is on default on the projector and dvd player I switch back and forth between cinema 1 and cinema 2. both of these settings give reddish skintone color. im using HDMI adapter to my projector and 35ft of HDMI cable from the projector to the dvd player. I also tried 480P and 720P with same results of the skintone color. thanks in advance for any help or tips.
First post after trolling for many many hours.
Was wondering how this compares to the Sony DVPNC85H which looks to be the 5-disc changer model of the same player. Does it have any problems that can be avoided by purchasing the DVPNS75H or is the same basically the same in every way except for being a 5-disc changer. Thanks for any replies.
Just found my answer to this a couple of pages ago. Thats what I get for the one time I don't check the last few pages.

mconstant 09-06-06, 04:38 PM okay so far the sony seems to work pretty good with my 50" panny- bu I watched V for vendetta and yuck! anyone else have anyexperience with thsi movie- I thought it looked bad-darks were very blotchy-alot of banding, overall soft and slightly grainy.

I have the 42" PX60u and have watched V a couple of times. The darks were great and nothing looked soft. One of the better looking movies on my set and everybody was wowed by it.

Your lucky, mostly I am happy with the player- I am really happy with the Panny- HD material is awesome. But for some reason Vendetta did not come across well. Its wierd I watched one of the wife's movies this weekend (have to give in now and then) I thnk it was one of the guys or something like that-teenage girl flick..-not my taste in movies-but it looked great-so go figure.

can someone give me a quick answer as to if the oppo 971 is worth the extra $85? I don't need all the extra bells and whistles. Just good DVD upconversion playback on a new HDTV.
Oppo folks will say "yes'
Sony folks will say "no"
I've owned both and the the Sony is every bit as good (IMHO) as the Oppo, save your money.
Chris Gerhard 09-07-06, 07:41 PM Another quick opinion, the Oppo DV971H is better than the Sony DVP-NS75H by a small margin on displays not affected by the macroblocking enhancement problem. For those displays the NS75H is better. Both are very good players for the money.

louiee_g 09-08-06, 11:12 AM I couldn't find an answer to my problem using the search engine, so I hope I'm not repeating something discussed ad nauseum, but here goes---
I bought the NS75H when it first came out and have had no problems at all really, except for today.
Randy
I think i have the same problem. I got the NS75 2 weeks ago, and everything worked fine. But yesterday, i paused the movie and changed inputs on the tv. after maybe 15 minutes, i went back to the movie and all i saw was the blank screen and noticed the HDMI light was off. I tried turning off/on the player, but that didn't fix the problem. I would get audio but there was no picture. It was a blank screen with flashes of light. I switched to component cables and the player works fine.
I've got an Optoma RD65 which i thought was non-HDCP (haven't seen documentation, just heard from the Optoma thread), but I was suprised when the DVI worked. What would I see if the DVI was non-HDCP? Does it take a while for the HDCP to "kick in"?
mediaslave 09-08-06, 01:38 PM My HDMI light on my player is not lighting up either after working for several months. It occurred when I tried to reconnect my DVD player to the TV. I noticed that when I was plugging the HDMI cable into my TV I had to force it a little. When I tried watching a movie via the HDMI output my TV could not receive a signal so I had to connect via component and it worked fine. I have tried the player on a friends flat screen and it works fine via HDMI. I'm thinking maybe it's an issue with my TV (viewsonic N3260W). I have contacted Viewsonic and will likely return for repair since it is still under warranty.

So 1 day later, i go and test out the dvd player and the HDMI now works.....without me having to do anything. no reseating of the cables or messing with any settings. I think there's a bug with the dvd player. if it happens again, i'll call sony warranty or just exchange it.
mttpalmer 09-10-06, 06:08 PM I'm stumped by this one and haven't been able to find a solution searching through this forum.
Can anyone tell me how to solve a problem as to why when I watch a 2.35 movie on this DVD player on my 16:9 screen, both the sides and the top/bottom show black bars? That's a ton of wasted space!
I shouldn't need to zoom for this should I? On my last set and DVD player I only had the bars on the top and bottom. Much appreciate the help!
I asked this question a few pages back. Apparently it happens on non-anamorphic DVD's. I've had this happen on both "While You Were Sleeping" and "Mrs. Doubtfire"

I assume this happens with all non-anamorphic DVDs regardless of DVD player so this would not be a reason to choose the oppo over the Sony.
I've watched literally hundreds of movies on my Sony through both my projector and DLP TV and none of the 2.35 movies exhibit this behaviour. I get the normal black bars on top and bottom only, never the sides. If I watch 4.3 stuff I'll get the normal bars on the sides but not top and bottom. Something is amiss with your setup.
Is there the dreaded "shift" issue with the 75? I'm in the market for the best bang for the buck player...going to get the Sony Pearl pj soon and want a good match....thanks!

mttpalmer 09-11-06, 10:18 AM I'm having the problem on Pulp Fiction. Gone thoroughly through the setup on both the television and the Sony and cannot find a setting to set it right. It's like I'm watching the movie on a set half the size.

I owned the LG for about a week. IMHO the Sony is hands down the better player, not only in picture quality but in features. PM me if you would like more details.
For the non-anamorphic widescreen flicks, try going to the setup menu and setting the 4:3 display mode to FULL rather than NORMAL. See what you think.

Tried that. It just stretches it from side to side. No expansion on top or bottom. Everyone is squished like you would expext when stretching a 4:3 movie to 16:9.
Zoom seems not to cut too much off, but the "2X" perpetually on the screen is ridiculous. Plus I'm not sure if the picture quality on zoom is optimal.
This will only happen on very few movies...right?

So far as I can tell, yes.
jhanson123 09-12-06, 01:07 PM Zoom seems not to cut too much off, but the "2X" perpetually on the screen is ridiculous.
I assume this issue has been discussed before? I tried to 2x a movie my kids were watching to avoid any burn-in issues with the top and bottom bars, but the 2x box wouldn't go away. I figured there's more risk in leaving the 2x up than having the black bars present from a burn-in perspective.
CR_Client 09-12-06, 04:09 PM Only on very few movies, right? Yes
Unfortunately, THREE of the movies this will happen on are the original theatrical release versions of Star Wars Ep IV, V, and VI. I looked on the boxes today, and the Original Theatrical Releases are Letterboxed 4:3 (non widescreen enhanced). Talk about Lucas sticking it to the customer. He finally releases the version that everyone begged for (Greedo doesn't shoot, folks), but in 2.0 (understandable), and 4:3 letterbox. Jackass...
Like I said, though, these are three rather MAJOR movies, released TODAY, that will exhibit this behaviour.
From what I can tell from testing:
DVD set to upconvert, 4:3 material, DVD Player on ZOOM, you will get a zoomed-in image in full upconvert resolution (i.e., it will be 720p or 1080i like you want it to be), with the fargin' (2x) display.
DVD set to upconvert, 4:3 material, TV set to ZOOM (if your TV can zoom/stretch, etc HD content... my Samsung cannot), you'll get 720 lines minus whatever lines you zoom off the screen.
So, essentially, TV zoom is an overscan, DVD zoom is a re-scan/re-size.
Which is what bug me even more. Yes, I can get my TV to display the image properly, but I get a lower-quality image than if I have the DVD player zoom it. But the DVD player zoom ludicrously leaves the zoom marker on the screen.
I still can't believe that Sony released the product with this "feature". Almost every single other OSD image in the player will disappear after x seconds, but not the zoom image.
No way they'd admit it was a bug, or release a firmware update, though. I'm still a little surprised that nobody's found a workaround for it yet.

If you have a Sony player, try this and see if it works. At this point set the player's resolution to 480P. Now see if you can use your TV's zoom mode to stretch the picture upward.
To watch non anamorphic DVD's, there are two things you can try. Use the component input which is 480P, or set the Players resolution to 480P. Both of these methods should unlock your set from full which makes it possible to use your tv's zoom modes. That's the way it works with my set.

Except that, as I mentioned above, you'll only end up with around 360 scan lines from top to bottom. (4:3 picture zoomed in to fit on a 16:9 is the same as cropping the 4:3 image to 4:2.25. 2.25/3 = 75% of original scan lines. 480*75% is 360 scan lines).
I watched the original DVD release of Boondock Saints in this mode, as it was 2.35:1, but non-enhanced. It looked like total and utter krep, even on my XBR960. You could see the individual scan lines, even from 7 feet away.
Thus my argument above about the inherent limitations of this player based on Sony's decision to release it with the "2X" logo on the screen in zoom mode. You either have a logo on the screen, or 75% resolution. If you can get your TV to zoom when set to 1080i, you're at 810i, which isn't horrible, but if you can only zoom your TV from a 480p or 480i resolution, then you've essentially neutered every last capability of the Faroudja chipset, and left yourself with an image worse than that from a PS2 DVD player.
tigerpilot 09-15-06, 10:42 PM Can anyone get their NS75P to play closed captions? Works fine on some discs but not all. Some DVD's don't have the caption choice in the setup menu but still have captions by default if you turn them on in the TV.

My old old old Zenith DVD machine plays them fine.

Has anyone here had the same problem? Solution?
dc5-rsx 09-20-06, 01:00 AM I just purchased a DVP-NS75H from best buy today and was really pleased w/the sound and video quality. the only thing is that the audio lags behind the video by a noticeable amount and I made the the built in "A/V Lag" setting was turned all the way down to 0. Does anyone know what could be wrong? Is it the dvd player or my tv (samsung TXS-3082W)? Should I exchange it and try another dvp-ns75h unit?

Do you have any other equipment on top of the unit, or in any way obstructing ventilation? Just curious if it might be an overheating issue that would resolve itself after being turned off a while, or excessive pressure being applied directly on top of the drive unit.
dc5-rsx 09-21-06, 03:01 PM update on my lag issues:
it turns out the sony dvd player is ok (for the most part). lag occurrs only when the dvd player is already playing a dvd WHILE I switch to the hdmi input. so as long as I have the input on hdmi BEFORE I turn the dvd player on, there is no lag. glad I found out what I was doing wrong and got it to work b/c I really love that sony player. anyone else experience this problem w/their dvd players?
decided against the oppo 971 (which would be a pain to return online) and bought the NS75H with a silver serpent HDMI cable. So far it is meets all my expectations. I have some questions though.
1) How do I output to 720p? 480p? is it just 480i or 1080i?
2) My TV inputs are getting kind of crowded and I just received monstercable 1000 series component cables as a gift. I looked online and the MSRP is about 2x what I payed for my current HDMI cable. Will the picture look just as good with expensive component cables or am I better off keeping it sealed and selling it for a nice return or giving it as a gift to another videophile? I only have 2 HDMI inputs, 1 DVI, 1 component on my TV and I'm thinking of getting a PS3 and HDTV satellite so I'm wondering what to do.
3) Does anybody know if 1080p will be able to carry effectively over component cables as good as HDMI? I've been shopping online and finding that good component cables cost more than HDMI so I'm wondering if their better (just as some have said that coaxial audio output is better than fiber-toslink)
Thanks for any help.

1. You can run 480p either through component or HDMI, 720p and 1080i are only available over the HDMI connection on his player.
2. You could try an HDMI switch unit. You can use an HDMI to DVI adapter to attach the NS75H to your set.
3. 1080p does not work over component, except on some of the much more expensive DVD players, the Cary 7 comes to mind, with a $4K price range! Whether component or HDMI will look better will depend on whether your TV upconverts better than your DVD player.
I tried the OPPO unit, and decided to return it, only because I did not see enough difference from what I was already using. The return policy is excellent! Oppo even pays to ship it back.
3. 1080p does not work over component, except on some of the much more expensive DVD players.
How about for HDTV. When HDTV satellite has 1080p programming will component cables work? Or is it only DVI/HDMI?

Component cables can carry 1080p but whether or not satellite receivers will be designed that way if we ever have 1080p satellite, I don't know. As far as upscaling DVD players, my NeuNeo HVD2085 will upscale to 1080p over component but I don't have a display that will accept the signal. I think the DVP-NS75H is a very good inexpensive HDMI upscaling player and I have several of them.
Chris
Thanks.
Also can anybody tell me how to change the resolutions on this DVD player. I've cycled through all the menu options but found nothing for this. I really want to try 720p since I have an LCD TV and it might make a smoother picture.
Melanotheron 09-25-06, 06:17 PM Go to custom setup and move down to the second icon from the top. You can change to 720p there if you have an hdmi connection.
Lee Bailey 09-26-06, 10:31 AM Thanks.

It's on page 63 in the manual. HDMI Resolution settings.
Lee Bailey 09-26-06, 10:39 AM Tried that. It just stretches it from side to side. No expansion on top or bottom. Everyone is squished like you would expext when stretching a 4:3 movie to 16:9
If you have a Sony player, try this and see if it works.
From the NS75H user manual about the 4:3 setting:
This setting is effective only when you set
“TV TYPE” in “SCREEN SETUP” to
“16:9.”
Adjust this to watch 4:3 aspect ratio progressive signals. If you can change the aspect ratio on your progressive format (480p) compatible TV, change the setting on your TV, not the player. Note that this setting is effective only for HDMI connection or progressive signals output from the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT jacks.
BOBBY DIGITAL 09-28-06, 12:15 AM so i went to BB to check out the NS75. shockiny they had one hooked up a samsung 720p dlp/lcd screen (didnt pay attenion). the PQ was less than what i expected. i verified that is was hooked up via hdmi (blue HDMI light was on) and also checked to see if the cable was running directly to the display.
to be honest the picture seemed jaggy and the not fluid at all.
all the while the BB rep was like "its a great picture isnt it" i was incredulous, like "WTF" are we looking at the same display" in my mind?
anyway i asked her if the NS75 was outputting 720 and she said yes. however i had no way to verify. i still plan on bringing one home (or an NS90) to test for myself
i know it is likely that they didnt "set it up" correctly but damn, what i saw couldnt have been just a set up issue, possible conflict between the player and the display?

It could have been a setup issue on the TV, such as noise reduction set way too high or something like that. The picture on my NS75H looks very good.
Robertg7 09-29-06, 02:03 PM decided against the oppo 971 (which would be a pain to return online) and bought the NS75H with a silver serpent HDMI cable. So far it is meets all my expectations. I have some questions though.

I have the NC85H and the Oppo971H, the former for playing cds and the latter for dvd's. They are both hooked up via hdmi to a manual splitter from Monoprice ($30) with the output hdmi from the splitter going into my lc37d90u display. The splitter footprint is about 4" wide 4"long 1/2"high and works perfectly. I only have two hdmi inputs on my display, and use the other hdmi input for my dish satellite box. This is a possible solution to your lack of sufficient hdmi inputs (p.s. picture on NC85H vs Oppo971H is very close but I prefer the picture on the Oppo and have the Sony as a backup dvd player).

The NS75H I have works great with my Samsung 720p at both 1080i and 720p...

Don't understand this. Had no problem with a monoprice HDMI cable and the 75H.
Make sure you ordered/received the correct cable.
Hello,
This may seem like a dumb question but I cannot figure it out. I am running a DVP-NS75H Player through an HDMI cable at 1080i into a Sony KD-34XBR970 television. Would I get better color running the YCbCr color setting or the RGB color setting??? I cannot find anything online that will tell me which is best. Any and All help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Elliott

trilite 09-30-06, 08:20 PM When I upconvert to 1080i over HDMI (I am using a 1 m Monster HDMI 400 cable) on my Sony NS75H, the picture becomes stretched too tall. Does anyone know why it does this? When I watch DVDs over composite it looks fine, no strecthing. I have a 36" Sony 36HS420 HDTV CRT.
My Pioneer 490V-S has the opposite problem. The picture becomes flattened or smaller at 1080i. I read that this is a Media Tek problem but what about the Sony?
Does Sony make firmware updates that fixes problems like this?

umm, post a picture because HDMI is HDMI and theres only 1 connector ( although I think theres a revised on in the works but what ever ).

Quick question: Will this player output digital audio (Dolby Digital and DTS) to the coax/optical outputs while using HDMI for video?
Yes
SEMIJim 10-01-06, 11:46 AM YesThat was quick! Thanks much :).
Looks like this one is the way to go, for me. The ol' Pioneer DV-525 is dying (beginning to have problems playing discs), I'm certainly not prepared to pop for a HiDef player at this time, but, with HiDef definitely on the horizon, neither would I care to spend a bundle for a SD DVD player at this time.
Too bad it's in brushed aluminum. Oh well...

Well you could alsway pay just a little more and get the sony DVP-NC85h. Which I believe is the has the same guts but it's a 5 disc carousel and it comes in black. It's what I have and I have no complaints with it.
Porkpie 10-02-06, 12:46 PM I'm currently using a 4 year old non-progressive Sony DVD player on my E2000 series LCDRP. I'm considering upgrading to this player because I'm not impressed with the quality of my DVDs. Do ya think the improvement in picture quality would be substantial?

What is the resolution of your TV? If it's capable of handling 720p or 1080i then YES.
pgfitzgerald 10-02-06, 02:59 PM I picked up the NS75 last week from CC and just got done reading this entire thread. The following post is the only one I've found describing the problem I'm having, and nobody responded.
Here's my setup:
Samsung HL-S5687W
Sony DVP-NS755V connected to TV via component and set to 480p
Sony DVP-NS75H connected to TV via HDMI and set to 1080i
Samsung DVD-HD960 connected to TV via HDMI and set to 1080p
Everything has been calibrated using DVE.
The 755V is very sharp, but the deinterlacer sucks.
The HD960 is pretty sharp, but the macroblocking is obnoxious.
The 75H is soft, like frankenberrie explains. It occurs at 480p, 720p, and 1080i. I've tried both HDMI and component.
I'm using the standard picture mode with sharpness, BNR, and MNR off. Turning sharpness up on the 75H causes horrible edge enhancement.
Is anyone else having this problem? Could it be a bad unit?
I'm using cables from Blue Jeans Cables. Unless every cable I've tested is bad, I don't think it's the cables.
If I can't figure it out, I think I'll just exchange it. But I thought I'd get everyone's opinion first.
Thanks,
Paul
BOBBY DIGITAL 10-02-06, 08:51 PM The NS75H I have works great with my Samsung 720p at both 1080i and 720p...
another thing i noticed was what appeared to be sparkling.
thats what i wanted to hear. it must be a setup problem on their end. the other problem i noticed was with their Blu Ray demo, the same elements were present. whoever put up their display did a absolutely terrible job. i know something is going on at this store cause the BR demo looked better when it first came out. as far as what they did to it between then and now i dont know.
how can you be an A/V retailer but have demos arent properly set up? how are ya gonna show the "the next generation of tv" if the retailers cant show the product properly.
i am not tryin to pick sides (upconvert, BR, HD-dvd, or cable, sat, ota) or get anybody else too. i just want quality viewing content on all fronts. selling the product would be a lot easier to if the customer could actually see its full capabilities.
damn, is it too much to ask.

It's what I have and I have no complaints with it.Thanks for the suggestion, but I went out and bought the 75H anyway. Too many good comments to over-look it. So far it's working well. I've got Monoprice's better HDMI cable on the way. Should be here tomorrow or the day after. It'll be interesting to see if I see any difference between component and HDMI on my 37" Philips 37pf7320A LCD.
I suppose I should have AUTO/PROGRESSIVE/NORMAL set to AUTO for my LCD WS HD TV (whether component or HDMI), eh? And I'll probably want to set the HDMI to 720P?

Is anyone else having this problem? Could it be a bad unit?I just picked up our 75H last Sunday. I've only run one DVD through it (Planes, Trains & Automobiles), but it looked fine to me on our Philips 37" LCD (37PF7320A), currently hooked up with component cables (AR, I think). While setting up my universal remote earlier this evening, I grabbed The Fifth Element (random choice) to have a DVD in for testing. From what I saw, in passing, it also looked fine. In fact, I thought to myself at the time how awesome the opening scenes in the pyramid looked. At no time has the image looked at all "soft," blurry, or fuzzy to me.
I haven't messed with any of the sharpness, BNR or MNR settings. They're however they were set out of the box. I tried switching between AUTO, PROGRESSIVE and NORMAL (Interlaced) mode, just to see what would happen. I didn't notice any difference right off. I'll experiment with that more later, when I'm in the mood to be discriminating :).
petergaryr 10-05-06, 08:02 AM FWIW, here is my review of the 75H:
http://www.epinions.com/content_262095539844
Whats reported within these posts and I found.
This thing WILL NOT upconvert to 720P or 1080i with a HDMI to DVI cable.
I've been through 2 players now since my Samsung HD-931 bit the dust.
2 cables to make sure it wasnt the cables.
Just got off the phone with Sony tech support which wasnt of any help what so ever.
Reset the TV, set it to RGB out, set this, set that, wait, wait, wait some more and they tell me the TV is at fault. OK, now if a HD-841 and a HD-931 both worked just fine and showed 720P or 1080i, and my cable box also can bet set either way, why wont your fking machine. Well you TV<(Japanese accent) isnt set up right, oh, so the TV which sees any signal and displays accordingly with no problem other than you unit, is my fault.
I got a strange hunch that when this units see the input and switched automatically to RGB output, it also defaults to 480P!!
Now what to do? The 841 works just fine in the bedroom, the 931 dropped dead and looked as good as this 75H, actually the 75H seems to have too much contrast to it, but still looks good.

Brightness, Contrast, sharpness and other settings are adjustable within the 75H, independent of the TV settings, so you can use the "custom" setting in the player to get the type of PQ you want.

The problem lies in YOUR setup, somewhere. This unit most definitely DOES upconvert to 720P or 1080i over HDMI>DVI cable. I'm doing it and so are many others. My Sharp DT-300 (which has only a DVI input) reliably shows the input as being 720P. Additionally, 720P looks much better than 480P. The PJ also shows 1080i as coming in also although to me 720P is much better for my display. Something is amiss in your setup I'm afraid.

I agree, mine is coming in at 1080i over hdmi>dvi just fine. I actually just got done tweaking the picture some more today and have found what I call the sweet spot in my set-up for my tv. Now I know I won't need a HD/BD player for years to come.
I'm having occasional audio dropouts over coax to a Panny XR50. No problem
with video dropouts over HDMI, but audio drops 2 or 3 times every disc.
I haven't tried optical, because my D* box is hooked up there.
Anyone else having audio dropouts over digital coax?
Forgot to mention, I have the 85H.
