I figured this player needed its own thread instead of getting buried in the NS70H "Shift Issue" thread.
Sony's official press release can be found here:
Sony Press Release (http://news.sel.sony.com/pressrelease/6399)
More info AND PICS can be found at one of the major, Sony-authorized etailers. I just typed in "DVP-NS75H" and it brought me right to it. I understand I can not post a direct link to them so if anyone's interested, PM me. Or can I say their name here?
I actually went ahead and placed a preorder figuring I can cancel it if I find it earlier and/or for less and/or find out it's plagued by some bug(s). While it's posted at MSRP, I used the Visa special offer and took $10 off plus got free shipping! :)
Here's hoping the shift issue is fixed! ;)
Grayson73 02-08-06, 10:01 AM Crutchfield.com is showing a 3/23/06 release date. When did your retailer say they would be getting it?
Grayson73 03-03-06, 04:07 PM From Sony Style Customer Care:
Thank you for contacting Sony Direct Customer Care.
In regard to your question, according to our latest information. The DVP-NS75H is sat to be released sometime this month. A specific date has not been set.
Thank you for choosing Sony Style!

why would msrp be $20 less than the NS70H?
MoltenLava 03-05-06, 03:51 AM I figured this player needed its own thread instead of getting buried in the NS70H "Shift Issue" thread.
Good call. The shift issue is blown out of proportion as much as Macroblocking with Faroudja chipset. That thread needs to die.
why would msrp be $20 less than the NS70H?
Why not? Typical CD player today is 10% of the cost of the typical CD player of 1985. What does it mean?
Painkiller 03-05-06, 08:00 AM Yeah, I'm glad you started this thread too. I'm probably going to pick one up. At this point, I think I'm going to wait a year before I pick up the hi-def players so I don't want to spend a lot. Just want something good with HDMI upconverting for a year. I like that sony's have the disc memory, a real bonus I think. Please do us all a favor and post a review when you get yours. :)
Grayson73 03-07-06, 12:02 PM J&R says they should hopefully have new stock in 1 to 2 weeks.
Grayson73 03-13-06, 03:17 PM Has anyone pre-ordered from J&R, Amazon, or Crutchfield?
mortaldivine 03-13-06, 04:52 PM Im just going to run to the store and get one.
Grayson73 03-14-06, 06:01 PM I pre-ordered from Amazon. Order says:
Shipping estimate: May 18, 2006 :(
digibal235 03-22-06, 04:25 PM I pre-ordered from Amazon. Order says:

I did the same and cancelled after I saw the ship date. I can wait one day to see if the Crutchfield date is accurate. I'm in the market for the 85H. More for the 5-disc changer than the upconversion (I've got an Oppo for that).
I'll be using component input and digital coaxial out. Any possibilities of a upconversion over component fix?
I called Circuit City and they now have it on their system (NS70H is out) but no stock at the moment. We're getting close!
rnick1976 03-22-06, 04:37 PM I'm swinging by Best Buy tonight, I'll try and find out when they're getting it.
I checked at a Best Buy near me. They show an in-store date of 4/4.
jcpzero 03-22-06, 06:42 PM Good call. The shift issue is blown out of proportion as much as Macroblocking with Faroudja chipset. That thread needs to die.
The shift is an important issue for some, that was the deciding factor in my returning the previous player. I am eagerly awaiting the new player to see if the shift via HDMI has been resolved.

Does anyone else find it a little ridiculous that we can't ask a Sony rep whether the 75H has fixed the shift issue?

First they'd have to quit playing dumb admit that there IS a shift problem.
digibal235 03-23-06, 07:57 AM Sony does not admit to flaws. Ever.
Crutchfield is now listing the ship date as "uncertain".
Crutchfield is nowing showing the release date at 4/17/2006.
rnick1976 03-23-06, 01:29 PM Nooooooo!
I was actually delusional enough to think I might be picking up a new DVD player this evening on my way home from work! Oh well. :(
Our BB in MN said in store 4/4 as well.
From my Crutch order (ordered yesterday):
158DVPC85B Sony DVP-NC85H Black
*** Expected delivery date not provided by manufacturer ***
However, on thier page today it says:
Expected: 4/7/2006
I found one! On eBay no less. Anyway, there is a company in Tennessee that has them and just put up a listing with a pretty decent price. They are showing 8 in stock (well 7 now because I bought one). They have very good feedback - that and the fact that eBay conveniently sent me a 10% off coupon made the deal irresistable. I should have it next week and will post a review after I've played with it. Of course the "shift" issue will be the first question I address.
chaarlieee 03-24-06, 12:46 AM I see that auction. I'd rather wait to see how the player performs though and if there is a shift. Give us a review when you get it.
Amazon is not listing it as a pre-order now. It says it usually ships in 24 hours. Anyone that pre-ordered have it ship yet?
Steve L 03-24-06, 01:18 PM Has anyone seen a manual for the NS75 yet? I'm curious to know if it will support 480i over HDMI, or just 480p and above, like the NS70?
/steve
Stan Rozenfeld 03-24-06, 01:18 PM Wow!
This is just the player I need while I am figuring out what to do about Blu-Ray and HD DVD.
I hope that they fixed the image shift problem and the audio delay problem. If they did, I will buy it in a minute!
Can't wait for you guys to review it!
Thanks,
Stan

I checked my order status and it now says:
Shipping estimate: March 27, 2006
Delivery estimate: March 31, 2006 - April 4, 2006
But i wouldnt be surprised it gets pushed back.

When did you pre-order?
I pre-ordered on 3/14 and the shipping estimate is still May 18, 2006 :(
The one I ordered on eBay last night has shipped and the tracking number shows it should be in my hands on March 30th. I'll be in Austin then - just great..... Nice present to come home to though!

Thats odd. I preordered on 3/19.

I emailed Amazon CS and they said there was a problem with my order status. Shipping estimate 3/27, delivery estimate 3/29!
I am in Tidewater VA and BB said it will be on their shelves April 2nd.
One question for those who currently have the 70- what setting do you set the player to for 2:35- I have a panny 900 projector. I bought the 70 just in case the 75 isn't fixed and because everyone thought the picture was great with the 70 and it might not shift on my projector. On the 2nd I will go get the other and compare both.
jcpzero 03-25-06, 05:35 PM my Sony DVPNC85H/S 5 disc player is getting ready to ship from Amazon...nice surprise that they are heading out the door earlier than expected, even on the 5 disc changer!
Let us know how you like it, I would prefer the (85H) 5 disc player with HDMI upconversion over the single disc (75H).

Amazon now lists them as "Not Yet Released". Strange....
Ace of Space 03-26-06, 12:01 PM I was just at my local Best Buy last night and they had a whole stack of them on sale. I made sure it was the 75H and not the 70H.

Wow ... that's sweet. My local BB is still rockin' the 70H.

Hi Ace,
which BB did you see them at? i'm thinking about picking one up.
thanx ;)
Steve L 03-26-06, 06:40 PM Still no manual up on the Sony support site. Would appreciate it if the first person who gets his or her hot little hands on one of these babies could report if it will output 480i over HDMI. The 70 didn't, but the older 975 did.
Thanks.

Hi Ace,

thanx ;)
They are at the Blossom Hill store, I just picked one up. I'll play with it later tonight and report about the shift and 480i. The first thing I noticed is Sony STILL does not include an HDMI cable (so stupid) and that it is now a smaller unit than the NS70h was. It looks like it's using the NS55 case. The box does list that it has A/V syncing though, a good thing.
They had the new NC85H changer in stock (black only) as well.

Thanx a bunch. I just picked up the last NS75H at the Blossom store. The shift issue has be fixed!! :D The picture quality is just as good as the 70H. I did a quick comparison with LOTR and War of the Worlds and there's no visible difference in the piture. BTW I am connecting it to a 40xbr1 through HDMI. :)
The last one? Wow, I got mine about 1PM and there were still 5 left (on the shelves) Hot item!
The AV Sync menu is there now with the option to set ms of delay, my Sammy DLP & Sharp projector never had this problem with the 70H so it's a moot feature for me. I know a lot of folks will be happy to see that implemented though. I haven't tried it with my projector (which is where the shift issue was present on the 70H) but will confirm AV2006's findings later tonight. I'm busy watching the Sharks lose to the Blackhawks at the moment :(
There is now an HDMI audio setting as well as a couple other settings I can't remember at the moment. It otherwise works just like the older model.
scherer326 03-26-06, 08:47 PM do any of the BB's in New York City have them yet. What is BB's SKU number for the dvd player.
rnick1976 03-26-06, 10:34 PM Is the NS75H allowing users to set a delay when the audio out is Dolby or DTS? That was one feature lacking in the old model that I was praying was included in this one ...
Unless there's some sort of compression/technological reason that it can't be done ... :)
chaarlieee 03-26-06, 11:17 PM We have one person that says there is no shift.. can anyone else confirm this? I had my money set for something else, but now I want to buy one..
chaarlieee 03-26-06, 11:36 PM By the way, how much did you guys pay for the 75?

I think the manual states that you cannot use the AV Sync funcction if you use the settings Dolby Digital or DTS via optical, coaxial, or HDMI
By the way, how much did you guys pay for the 75?
Same price as Crutchfield which is Sony's MSRP
I've tried a few more DVDs in the last few hrs and switched back and forth between the NS70 and NS75. To my eyes the NS75 actually seems to produce a slightly cleaner and smoother picture in fast action scenes. Also there appears to be less image compression while upscaling to 1080i.
Confirmed, image shift or compression or whatever you want to call it, is gone. I've tried this unit with several DVD's as well as no DVD (looking at the players menu) and switched between 480p, 720p and 1080i - all are edge to edge flawless.
I must say this player is a marvel to see. The picture to me is just as outstanding as its predecessors but without any of the ns70H's warts. Everything that was good with the 70H is intact on the 75H. It seems to be a tad faster than the 70H also. It's not blindingly fast mind you but it does seem to respond to commands and load the disk a bit quicker.
I hope folks who buy this unit to integrate with their home audio system take the time to go through the book and menus to set the audio portion correctly. It comes dumbed down in the box with Dolby Digital and DTS turned off. Additionally it's set to 48khz instead of 96khz. Once those three items have been activated this baby produces some of the most outstanding sounds I've heard. I fear most folks will simply buy it, plug it in and hit play never knowing what they are missing. I did confirm that it will pass the 6.1 DD-EX and DTS-ES audio streams also.
The only real errors Sony keeps making is not providing an HDMI cable (umm why?) and not allowing "on the fly" resolution changes. You still have to stop the DVD that's playing and migrate through several menu screens to get to the one that allows resolution changes. I suppose you'll most likely only do this once though. You'll put it where you like it and then leave it alone.
Having been through several upscaling players (Oppo, Samsung, Zenith, RCA) I can honestly say this is best player to date that I've seen. The picture sparkles and the sound is to die for. If you've been on the fence wondering if this is the one to get it's time to get off because you won't find a better player for the money. It's that good.
chaarlieee 03-27-06, 04:30 AM Dammit.. I think I might.. just buy it. Amazon.com seems to be as low as it'll get. Do they charge when the item ships or do they charge when you place an order?
Steve L 03-27-06, 06:47 AM and switched between 480p, 720p and 1080i
Guess this means that 480i is not selectable via HDMI?

mercury 03-27-06, 06:55 AM Just picked up a plasma 50" with <2> HDMI!!!
would this player be a good choice for me?
i kinda wanted a 2in1 dvd/vcr(record dvd`s not important)but can`t seem to find a good one at BB....(have some BB GC to burn).
thanks-
ChrisCollins 03-27-06, 07:39 AM I am really looking at this player and the Panasonic s77.
Any thoughts on choosing between them?
abrown101 03-27-06, 09:27 AM Glad to see Sony fixed the shift issue.
Have they also fixed the issue with the zoom? I think with the 70H if you zoom in, the words 'zoom 2x' or something like that stay on the screen making it useless for watching it.
Also, when playing mp3's. Is there a random feature to randomly play all mp3's on a cd or does it just play them in order.
Now if it would only play PAL movies and DivX it would be perfect.
Thanks.
AV2006 and Itsdon....... I had a 70H for about a month that I returned in time for a refund. Other than the image shift on the 70H, it seemed to squeeze the picture when set to 720p and even more at 1080i. (on 2.35 movies black bars on top and bottom where larger than my panny prog. scan player) Does this player do the same thing? Its like using the upscale feature caused you to get a "smaller picture" I really liked the 70H other than the fact that it gave me a smaller picture on 2.35 movies and I would like to try a 75H but not if the image is "reduced" Are you guys seeing a difference in image size at 720p and 1080i vs. 480?
rnick1976 03-27-06, 09:53 AM Have they also fixed the issue with the zoom? I think with the 70H if you zoom in, the words 'zoom 2x' or something like that stay on the screen making it useless for watching it.
Yeah, forgot about that one ... that zoom feature is good for non-anamorphic widescreen DVDs if you're watching on a 16:9 TV (I know it's still sacriledge, but whatever ... :))
Also - if anyone in Mass is seeing these at Best Buy, please let me know! :)
Grayson73 03-27-06, 10:26 AM I was just at my local Best Buy last night and they had a whole stack of them on sale. I made sure it was the 75H and not the 70H.
How much is it 'on sale'?
mercury 03-27-06, 10:58 AM ((should be just under 130.00;)
BB`s in NJ won`t get them until April 2nd.
My plasma gets setup this Thursday..
i wanted this player before then so i can run the burn-in disk!
oh well, maybe ill pick up a 70 to use until the 75`s come in.
hows BB return policy?
rnick1976 03-27-06, 11:05 AM hows BB return policy?
30 days, no questions.
mercury 03-27-06, 11:10 AM 30 days, no questions.
thanks,i hate doing this,
but i can`t seem to find a dvd player,dvd/vcr player or dvd recorder at BB under 250-300 that does`nt get slammed here!
rnick1976 03-27-06, 11:23 AM but i can`t seem to find a dvd player,dvd/vcr player or dvd recorder at BB under 250-300 that does`nt get slammed here!
Keep in mind ... people who are happy with their products don't come to the forums to talk about it (mostly). ALL players will have issues, and that's almost always what you'll hear about them.

learengi 03-27-06, 11:48 AM So has anyone picked up the DVP-NC85H 5-disc changer? I'm assuming it should be the same in term of function as the ns75. I need a good upconverting player for my sony 30hs420 hdtv. Getting a five changer would be a plus. I just saw them both on sale at BB here. :)

There is no compression/shifting/squeezing with this player on any resolution setting. I've not tried the MP3 functions of the player but will do so in the next day or so. I'll check the Zoom also to see if it still diplays the (2X etc.). I didn't use either of those features on the 70H so I didn't think to check them. The major flaw with the 70H (shifting) has been fixed.
Itsdon,
Can you answer the question about 480i output via HDMI? Many of us who are or will use scalers want to know.
DR
Does the 75H still have the menu setting for 4x3 on a 16x9 TV like the 70H lets you choose pillarbox or stretched? (manual not online yet or I could look there...)
I just picked up a 70H at BB and then found out the 75H was coming out...
persyus 03-27-06, 01:48 PM Also guys, What is the difference between this one and the ns95h??
jcpzero 03-27-06, 02:50 PM I am really looking at this player and the Panasonic s77.

Depends on your display type. If your display is prone to issue with macro blocking (such as a plasma), the Sony may be a better fit (now that shift is fixed).
JCPZero
Also guys, What is the difference between this one and the ns95h??
Speaking of the NS95H, the Secrets review noted it did not pass BTB, had severe pixel cropping, and failed the Video Levels. Anybody know if these issues are present in this model?
Grayson73 03-27-06, 05:58 PM What is the Best Buy SKU number for the DVP-NS75H? I called Germantown, MD and they said it wasn't in the computer.

chaarlieee 03-27-06, 07:00 PM They have it on display at the Best Buy in Mira Mesa, CA. Didn't see any in stock though, but I didn't really look.

Hey
I checked out the Best Buy in Saugus and Braintree-nothing yet and no one at either store could give me any info
Does anyone know if the obnoxiously bright blue light can be turned off when the player detects a HDMI connection to the TV? The dimming function dims the entire display and renders it bascially useless. I think the display on the NS70 is a little better since the new NS75 has somewhat of a mirror finish to the diplay window and it reduces the readability of the display.
Amazon now says shipping date of May 30th if you order it - can they be serious?
rnick1976 03-27-06, 09:45 PM I checked out the Best Buy in Saugus and Braintree-nothing yet and no one at either store could give me any info
Nothing in Framingham, either ...
The Best Buy in Mission Valley/San Diego had 4-5 left tonight. I picked one up after work. I have an HDMI cable on the way from Monoprice so I won't be checking it out for another couple of days.
mortaldivine 03-27-06, 11:31 PM I picked up the DVP-NC85H from BB, everything seems fine. The two complaints so far is the blue HDMI light is blinding and there was no S-Control connectors on the back. The remote control sensor is way over on the far far right and my cabinet blocks it. Oh and the fact I have to turn the volume of my tv all the way down using HDMI...annoying.
learengi 03-28-06, 12:07 AM Decided to go with the NC85H also. At BB the NS75 is $129 and the NC85H is $153; only a $24 difference. It only comes with composite cables so I had to buy an HDMI cable separately. Tried out Sin City and it looks great; then again it is my first upconverting player. There's no way I can go back to composite after seeing the difference.
chaarlieee 03-28-06, 12:50 AM Amazon now says shipping date of May 30th if you order it - can they be serious?
Where does it say that?
And does amazon charge you when you place an order or do they charge you when they ship it?
Edit: Nevermind, I see it. I'm not sure about that. I know amazon and other web sites like walmart put up weird shipping dates, but usually ship when the item is in stock.
ohernan 03-28-06, 01:47 AM I pre-ordered the DVPNC85H/S HDMI changer from Amazon.com last week, and it came up with a June est. arrival date! When I tried to cancel, my order already entered the shipping process, and could not be cancelled. When I spoke to their customer service, they didn't know why the site showed a delivery date 2 months away, but that the player was actually being packaged for shipment. Today, I have a Fedex tracking # showing it's on its way. So apparently Amazon.com is having issues displaying accurate delivery dates.
For those curious - the 2X zoom indicator still stays on the screen the whole time. The unit will not send a 480i HDMI signal. Haven't tested the MP3 function.
Watched Saw 2 tonight, the player has a noticeable layer change. Very slight though, like the 70H. My "interim" player, the RCA DRC8060n has no noticeable layer change which is why this one stood out when it happened tonight. The bright blue light can be dealt with some silver duct tape for those who don't like it. My AV pieces are behind smoked glass doors so I don't notice it. Sure is a nice player!

chaarlieee 03-28-06, 03:31 AM Price at amazon.com went up to what BB sells for.. I could have saved a few bucks, but I waited too long.
moraseski 03-28-06, 09:24 AM Does it bother anyone that there is only a 90 day labor warranty? I usually stay away from components that don't have a 1 year parts and labor warranty. But this player looks like it might be the one I want to get. Also, my 5 year old Toshiba just bit the dust.
Jim
rnick1976 03-28-06, 09:26 AM What's a layer change?
On dual-layer discs, there will be a SLIGHT pause in the movie. If you've ever watched a high-quality (read: special edition) DVD, about halfway thru it usually happens. Everyone in the room watching the movie will exchange a nervous glance, as if to say "Phew, I thought we lost the movie there for a second!" and then go back to watching. :)
Amazon response:
I'm sorry for any misunderstanding regarding this item. Although we do have your copy of "Sony DVPNS75H Single Disc DVD Player" on hand, we can't ship it to you until its official release date is announced. As soon as a release date has been determined for this item, we will add that information to our web site.
Many manufacturers, publishers, and record labels restrict retailers from selling or shipping their products until the official release date.
In some cases, these items may enter the shipping process just prior to the release date. When possible, we do this to ensure that you get the item as soon as possible after the release date.

In most cases, for just what it sounds like - to zoom in on something in whatever video you're watching ("Hey, zoom in on that car ... I want to see the wheels better" or something like that).
While most videophiles don't recommend it, some people use the zoom to eliminate the black bars from widescreen movies (thus sacrificing video content from the right and left sides of the screen). It also degrades the quality of the video content.
Grayson73 03-28-06, 10:22 AM And does amazon charge you when you place an order or do they charge you when they ship it?
Edit: Nevermind, I see it. I'm not sure about that. I know amazon and other web sites like walmart put up weird shipping dates, but usually ship when the item is in stock.
They don't charge until it is shipped.
I got this response from Amazon yesterday:
Our latest information indicates that "Sony DVPNS75H Single Disc DVD
Player" has not yet been released and the expected release date is
not known. As soon as a release date has been determined for this
item, we will add that information to our web site.
While we are confident that copies will be made available, we cannot
provide more precise information about the fulfillment of the order.
In light of this uncertainty, we will understand if you would prefer
to cancel your order. As of yet we have made no changes.
However, we have no new information at this time regarding the status
of your order; you will be notified as soon as there is an update.
Grayson73 03-28-06, 10:23 AM Went to Best Buy in Germantown, MD and found out the item number is 7686024.
They checked stock in in MD/DC/VA area and didn't find any. Computer says they are expecting them on 4/2/06.
Anyone check Circuit City?
I was in circuit city yesterday and nothing-- it seems the east coast (I am in VA) is putting them out at best buy on the 2nd.
persyus 03-28-06, 10:53 AM does this player have hdcp or did they leave it off??

Like most (all?) new HDMI players, this one supports HDCP.

Was it even in their system?
scherer326 03-28-06, 11:11 AM will BB and CC have these players in their stores on the EAST coast on april 2nd. Any SKU numbers yet.

I posted the BB SKU earlier (top of page 4). The BB computer showed 4/2/06. Not sure how accurate it is.

Not

Does this player upscale only thru the HDMI connection even when you are playing a video dvd that isn't copy protected?
Yes, upscaling through HDMI only. S-Video and Component are not upscaled regardless of copy protection.
Grayson73 03-28-06, 04:34 PM I got email today from B&H and Crutchfield stating that they have the NS75H in stock now. Too bad shipping is over $10

just trying to understand.
if you run 480i over component then the plasma would end up doing the scaling?
correct?
ChrisEst 03-28-06, 04:36 PM I just bought the 85 at BB in Houston, Fairmont Parkway at Beltway 8. This is actually Pasadena. They still had 4 in stock. The salesman said they got them in last Friday.
They had I believe 4-5 75's in stock.....

just trying to understand.

Correct. You can send either 480i or 480p over component and your display will upscale it (if needed) to it's native resolution.
ChrisEst, what is the difference b/w the two?
NS75H is single disk, NC85H is a 5 disc changer. Otherwise they are identical. I've seen the changer model and it's quite large, make sure you have room!
persyus 03-28-06, 06:11 PM Thanks ItsDon
Tigershark 03-28-06, 06:25 PM Google the model number... I found it at crutch...
Thanks for the tip. Here is some more useful information:
Dimensions:
DVP-NS75H (Single Disc): 17"W x 1-3/4"H x 9-3/8"D
DVP-NS85H (5 Disc): 17"W x 3-5/16"H x 16-3/16"D
The 5 Disc changer is the same width, but significantly taller and deeper.
Colors:
I also noticed that one retailer offers the changer in silver or black, but the single disc only in silver. Does it also come in black?
Tigershark 03-28-06, 06:27 PM Can you hook up this player via HDMI to the display AND hook up a separate audio feed to a receiver via the red/white RCA plugs? I have seen other players with redundant red/white audio outputs right next to the HDMI output, but the ones on the Sony "belong" to the component video out.

I believe all the audio/video ports are live all the time. I personally run the HDMI to my projector, Component to the DLP TV and Digital Cable audio to my receiver. Using the RCA (red/white) I'm sure would be live also.
ok went back over to circuit city and it is not in the computer or on the floor.

Through a mess of orders and emailing customer service reps, I ordered mine today, Amazon shipped it today, should be here tomorrow (they offer 3 month free trial to Amazon prime on checkout sometimes - if accept then get free 2nd shipping or $4 next-day shipping)...

Brett Miles 03-29-06, 12:18 AM These players don't do SACD, correct? It's listed on the Amazon description for the 85H, but not on the Crutchfield description or the photo. I find that surprising.

If hooking up the digital audio to an AVR with HDMI to the TV, make sure you change the settings on the player to output DTS and Dolby. I would assume this is common with all HDMI players, so maybe I am reporting what is common knowledge.
If it detects HDMI, it defaults into PCM on the digital audio out UNLESS YOU CHANGE THE SETTING.
It took me awhile to figure that out last nite because my Elite AVR was not displaying either Dolby or DTS indication on the front panel like on my other player (I had component video thru my AVR). Plus, the sound just wasn't there, especially the sub.
One thing that is frustrating on the player is that it makes you completely stop the DVD to adjust settings. Overall, the fixing the digital out was a borderline nightmare because I knew everything was set up right.
As for the performance of the 85, by the time I got thru fixing the digital out, I didn't have alot of time to fiddle with it. Plus, I used it on a new TV that I haven't messed with either (Mits. 52528). Basically, I plugged them both in at the same time and went at it.
What it did not have were bars on the top and bottom common to the 70. I watched Clapton's OMCOMR and the picture was fine and the audio was better than fine. Much better than my old player (Phillips).
I also watched WOTW on DTS, again audio was great. I did notice some graininess in some scenes, especially lighter backgrounds like skylines, etc.
Like I said, I did not adjust any picture quality settings on the TV or the player (all factory default settings). I will get a chance to experiment tonite.
Somebody upthread said the 85 was big, and yeah it is pretty deep. I was able to set it to the side of my TV stand shelf so it would miss the back panel on the stand, and it fit fine. The Elite was another story.....nothing a drill couldn't fix for the sub/dig. out connections.....
scherer326 03-29-06, 08:36 AM Believe it or not, after work yesterday I walked into the CC on the upper west side in NYC to look at tv stands and to my surprise was a DVP-NS75H on the shelf. Oh yeah, I picked that baby up in a second. It was the only one left, there wasnt even a price tag on the shelf.
My guess is to try your local BB or CC because you never know. I thought I was going to have to wait till the 2nd to see if they get them in the stores, but I got mine.
Yeah, I got the offer, but watch out for the $79 stinger at the end of the 3 months....
You can immediately change the setting to NOT auto-renew. Therefore can enjoy your three months in peace....
CajunClicker 03-29-06, 09:00 AM Picked mine up at a local BB in Irving, TX. Same $ as on Amazon. Looks PHENOMENAL on the 50" SXRD! The sound quality is fantastic, too.
scherer326 03-29-06, 09:07 AM cajunclicker, what settings do you have the dvd player to. I dont have mine hooked up yet. Is there an audio lag when you first turn the player on.

CajunClicker 03-29-06, 12:01 PM artimp, the aspect controls I noted in the setup are 4:3, 4:3 (pan & scan), 16:9. Yes. I tried mine and it stayed on for 2 minutes
Which color 85 do you guys like the best Black or Silver? I'm gonna order one but I'm hung up. I like Silver but getting tired of it just a bit. However, the black looks dull on the pics from the net. Maybe it looks better in person. Help me out.

I bought silver because it matched all my other components. Black would be like, umm, a black eye in my AV cabinet!

I ordered black because it goes with all my other accessories. The finish is not as nice as my AVR, but it is typical on what you would expect.
It seems that most of the 85's that can be found now are black, while the 75's are silver. Actually, I would have waited buying the 85 if the opposite were true.
It's your call, but you won't be disappointed in the black if that is what you are asking.

Ok thanks. I may go with the Black. I have alot of silver components. However, My tv is a little bit of both and since getting it I have started to mix the components up. Which actually I like now. As to where I didn't 3 months back. Times change I guess. Thanks again.
gwsmith 03-29-06, 01:56 PM Which color 85 do you guys like the best Black or Silver? I'm gonna order one but I'm hung up. I like Silver but getting tired of it just a bit. However, the black looks dull on the pics from the net. Maybe it looks better in person. Help me out.Personally, I think it's a bit passé to worry about color these days....When I first bought my A/V setup i made sure everything was the same brand so it would all match....how naive was I?
Years later, as I upgraded my components, mostly due to obsolescence, I found that the best performing equipment was not necessarily going to match. You can't count on equipment form the same manufacturer to be the same color year after year, so why fight it?
So now, of the 8 pieces of gear I have in my rack, there's a nearly equal split between black and silver, and my TV is mostly silver, and my speakers are all black. It looks fine to me, and no one who's ever seen my system has said, "Eyew, you've got black and silver mixed together!"
My brother has Pio Elite and he probably wouldn't have anything but piano black in the same room with it but that's him.... ;)
Aesthetics plays a part, but I'm not going to let it get in the way of having the best performing gear I can afford.
Amazon order just came - works great!
No problems that I can see!
Still using 50ft HDMI to M1 (projector port) cable from monoprice and no problems with any DVDs (including copy protected)
BTBuck1 03-29-06, 02:19 PM I picked up two of the DVP-nc85h/B i think i was the first to get them as i checked BB's in vegas while on vacation and around SD and none had it, so i ordered it in from BB last friday and got it last night.
The players are awesome, and the "image shift" issue has been resolved as i have mine on -1 overscan and it fills the screen completely. I'm very happy & impressed by what you get for $150 these days. My first DVD player was $499 and was a P.O.S. in comparison.
My only gripe and its small is there is a loading period in between discs but just before you say to yourself "come on" it plays. and atleast it lets you know it's loading by displaying "loading" on the screen, Unlike a previous model i had that was slower than this, alot slower.
All in all, this will tide me over quite nicely til blueray drops this summer! w00t

fore.aces 03-29-06, 03:53 PM I picked up my 75H at BB & have it hooked up to my BenQ projector thru Progressive component. If I hook it up with HDMI I will need a 35' cable. Has anyone compared the picture between the Component & HDMI? I'm wondering if the picture is better thru HDMI & would warrant me buying a new cable? Thanks!
scherer326 03-29-06, 04:25 PM I believe that you cant upconvert via component, only HDMI
mercury 03-29-06, 04:37 PM does this player(75)have that big logo like the LG does.
every time i start a movie with the LG 511 it puts there logo(LG)on the screen, stable for 5-7 seconds.then after it turns off i can see it on the screen for 20+seconds.
my old Panny A 310 bouced it around.
Just picked up a 75H at CC in Denver. None on display or on the shelf, but asked them to check stock and they had 2 that had just been delivered. Only had enough time on my lunch hour to hook it up and do a quick viewing. Noticed some blocking with 1080i on my Samsung HL-R6167W, but it could have been the DVD. Also haven't yet had time to see whether 720p (native resolution of the Sammy) makes a difference. One thing I noticed immediately was that the color seemed more accurate than my Pioneer Elite 45a via component; a very quick check using DVE test patterns confirmed this. And no shift issue!
Has anyone else had a chance to compare 720p vs 1080i yet?
Grayson73 03-29-06, 05:17 PM You have to use HDMI connection to get 720p and 1080i.

Also, will do some comparisons tonight between 1080i and 720p and report back.

Start up is the same as the previous model. You get a blue screen overall with the static Sony logo in the upper left corner (rather large one) and the "loading" (or whatever) text below and centered. Standard Sony fare.

Anyone else besides timdg using a Looonnngggg HDMI cable with this player (or a 70H for that matter) to a PJ?
My research indicates 30-35 feet is pushing it close to the cliff - Seems to depend on source tho.
hatchet 03-29-06, 07:35 PM Picked one up at my local CC here in South Florida...they had about 4-5 on the shelves but the 70H was still on display and showed the 70H price which is +20 bills. The 75H is the same price as Amazon.
CC is also giving out $15 off $100 coupons good for 4/7 - 4/23 if you can pick one up AND wait that long.
I used a 10% off on DVD players $80 and up. It was in one of those change of address packets I picked up at the local Post Office when I moved. The coupon was going to expire 3/31. CC must run these coupons often b/c I used one back in January on my Sony KDF-E42A10. They are only good for about a month so check at the Post Office.
The 70H is getting kicked to the curb on the 32" Aquos...75H is reserved for the Sony.
Daddy like :)

scherer326 03-29-06, 08:31 PM I have an audio problem, hopefully you guys can help. I Have the 75H and the picture is sweet. I have it connected to my sony av receiver to get dolby digital.
Here is the problem: When I go to the chapter section or when it first loads up or when I go to a particular scene, the audio switches to PCM and it takes a few seconds for the sound to come out so I see the video playing but here no sound. It eventually switches to Dolbly Digital and audio now comes out but after a few seconds.
Also say I go to a particular scene, it will go directly to the scene and I will see the video start to play but there wont be dolby digital audio for a few seconds. I believe the av receiver goes back to PCM. Just video, no audio. When the dolby digital does come, it is fine. But why the delay each time. Should I adjust something on the av receiver or dvd player.
Anyone else have this problem, does it always switch to pcm. Do I need to adjust a setting. Please help.

I tried four HDMI upconverting DVD players before settling on a Sony...
The Samsung 845 and the LG 511 (before HDCP hack) REALLY struggled with long cable... A Toshiba worked with the 50ft cable, but it was a junky player...
The Sony 70 and 75 both worked just fine with the 50 ft cable...

ChrisEst 03-30-06, 08:57 AM Two people here confirmed the shift is gone.
Yes, the shift is gone. I think I was one of those people so I may not be adding to the confirmation database. :)
I had a chance to mess with the 85 last nite. I noted yesterday that I had some noise or graininess on lighter background scenes on WOTW and didn't know if it was the player or my TV. This is especially noticiable in the sky on the storm scene, but was noticeable in many scenes.
I turned on the BNR & MNR and it didn't seem to help. I then started going thru all my other DVD's and no noise whatsoever. After adjustments, the picture is on par with the sound, which is excellent, except on WOTW.
Has anybody else noticed this noise on WOTW?
Also, my eye could not tell the difference on Dynamic vs Standard vs Cinema, and the sharpness adjustments showed little effect. I think I settled on setting 1 for sharpness.
Also, just for my info why would a player give an option for Noise Reduction or not? In what case would you not want to turn that on?????
Overall, I am very happy. BTW, I have only been using 720P, over HDMI. Later.
Has anybody confirmed if this player can display BTB?
wnorris 03-30-06, 10:31 AM Speaking of the NS95H, the Secrets review noted it did not pass BTB, had severe pixel cropping, and failed the Video Levels. Anybody know if these issues are present in this model?
Please provide a link to this review. I can't find anything on the secrets website pertaining to a NS95H. Further, I can't find anything on Sony's website to indicate they even make a NS95H. I'm sure imaginary DVD players will fail all sorts of tests.
there is a whole thread on the NS95- might find info there.
Grayson73 03-30-06, 10:43 AM Are you guys talking about DVP-NS90V?
Speaking of the NS95H, the Secrets review noted it did not pass BTB, had severe pixel cropping, and failed the Video Levels. Anybody know if these issues are present in this model?
You must have mistyped the model number. Secrets has tested a Sony NS999ES (listed as NS99 in their search results) and an NS975, but no NS95H.
chaarlieee 03-30-06, 11:48 AM Do dvds look better in 720p or 1080i?
scherer326 03-30-06, 11:56 AM this thread should be used just for the 75H, I have the 75H now and would like to use this thread to read reviews from other people who bought the dvd player.
I can't find anything on Sony's website to indicate they even make a NS95H
I'm guessing it's actually the DVP-NS975V
Do dvds look better in 720p or 1080i?
Depends on your display. 720p looks best on my Samsung 720p DLP TV (obviously) but strangely enough 720p also looks considerably better than either 1080i or 480p on my 576p projector (Sharp DT-300). If I put the player's HDMI setting on "auto" then it will default to 720p for the TV (naturally) but when I run the PJ it defaults to 1080i (PJ reports 540p). In any case, 720p looks much better for some reason. Trial and error - find a setting you like and roll with it!
gwsmith 03-30-06, 12:20 PM I think it depends on your display, and to a degree the video content. Generally, I prefer 720p on my Sony 50A10, but to each his own....only you can make that judgement. ;)
I did some watching last night at both 720p and 1080i. 720p MAY have been a little smoother (less blocking) on my native 720p display, but since there's no quick way to change the 75H's resolutions, it's more difficult to compare than with some other players. I didn't notice a major difference between the two.
Anyone else had time to compare 720p and 1080i? Also, are others seeing the blocking I'm referring to (sort of a pixilization that may be similar to the macroblocking issue that players with the Faroujda chip display). Didn't have a lot of time to view different DVD's, so it may be source related.
Here's my quick and dirty, completely juvenile and unofficial way of seeing the difference in resolution changes. Pick a movie with scrolling end credits that has a black background and white lettering and watch that while changing resolutions. 1080i for me usually is less defined and sometimes jittery whereas 720p is mostly well defined and smooth. I figure that difference would be prevalent whether it's text or picture.
I suppose I could do the DVE thing again (for the 4,000 time ;) ) but for now I just want to actually 'watch' a movie :) and 720p looks best to me.

It was a typo. It was the NS975V.
ok, for anyone in VA or maybe even Maryland, I went to Best Buy just now to see if BY CHANCE they had put them out before the 2nd and the guy said well we are getting ours Friday morning and you could get one Friday night but while he was checking I noticed that the stores in VA BEACH already had them on shelf so I just picked one up.
I am hooking it to the panansonic 900 projector tonight to see how it does and by the way I just happen to have the OPPO here also :-)
marktiberius 03-30-06, 06:51 PM For those in the Santa Clara Valley, both the 75 and the 85 (5-disc changer) are available in the Best Buy in Santana Row. At 2pm today they had 5-6 of each.
10801/hdmi looks better than 720p on my PIO 4360.
DVD and STB.

Just picked one up at BB in Champaign, IL, so I'd guess they are widely available at BB in the Midwest. I loved the picture on the NS70H, but had to return it since it squished a 16:9 picture about 2" each top and bottom on a 110" screen. I hope reports that the NS75H has solved that problem are true.
I picked the 75h up at BB today. Tried out the 70H but returned it due to the shift and squish issue. The 75H doesn't have these issues. I will say that at 1080i it still leaves close to a 1/2" bar on each side but on my SXRD I can set overscan to +1 and the bars are gone. The PQ is still as good as the 70H was but proportions look more appropriate now that there's no squishing:). I haven't watched any DVDs for a while so I'm not sure if I'm correct when I say this but it seems to me that the audio is a little better on this model than the last. I'm hearing more details (especially in the rear speakers) that what I recall. Of course, it could be because I haven't watched a movie on my system for a little while.
marktiberius 03-31-06, 12:58 AM I picked up the 85 at Best Buy. I was going to get the 75 but my wife wanted the changer and it was only $24 more, plus I prefer black.
I'm not a videophile, but the PQ seemed great to me. I'm using HDMI connection, set to 720p. I have the player set to "Cinema 1" mode, and I left the 2 noise reduction options on. I just did a quick calibration of my TV using the THX Optimizer on Star Wars Attack of the Clones. I browsed some scenes of the Star Wars movie, The Incredibles, The Red Violin, Star Trek Insurrection, and The House of Flying Daggers. All looked a bit crisper and more detailed to me than my previous old component/480p DVD player.
PQ is not quite up to OTA HD (Lost, The Unit), but very enjoyable nonetheless.
While I find this DVD player to be an improvement thus far, I only bought it because my old player died. Otherwise I probably still would be satisfied with the lesser PQ of my old player.
For those curious about TV settings, my TV is a Samsung 40" LCD, LNR-408d. Going from memory, I think I have my settings at around 85 contrast, 34 brightness, color at 40, Warm 2, Sharpness at 50. I will probably end up lowering contrast and sharpness a tad at some point.

CT_Wiebe 03-31-06, 04:46 AM Itsdon -- I'm interested in your viewing results with your PJ. I sent you a PM.
marktiberius -- I'm local too, but closer to the Blossom Hill BB than Santana Row. Just curious how your NS85 is working out. I'm also curious how you like your Sammy LNR-408d (send me a PM - no need for that discussion on this thread).
Does the zoom thing stay in the corner the whole time? I was watching The Abyss last night (still waiting on my HDMI cable from monoprice) and had to zoom 2X and at least as long as I had it up the zoom logo was still there. Please tell me there is a way I am missing to turn it off...

Nope. There was *someone* here who called Sony support about it (regarding the 70H, but still), and they said it was "operating as intended". There is no way to get rid of that 2x.
great... how annoying....
rnick1976 03-31-06, 08:44 AM great... how annoying....
Sorry dude. :(
The good news is you probably won't be using it *that* often, if it offers any consolation.
But still ... you have to wonder what the business decision was to leave that icon on there ... so weird.
scherer326 03-31-06, 09:07 AM I have this dvd player, can someone list there settings on the player so others can compare. Thanks.
Grayson73 03-31-06, 09:55 AM Got email notification that J&R now has them in stock, free shipping.
marktiberius 03-31-06, 10:18 AM One more thing - while running the THX Optmizer, in the "brightness setting screen" I could easily see the drop-shadow on the TXH logo and the black boxes all the way to the left before I calibrated my TV. This indicates to me that this player is sending "Blacker than black" through HDMI.
Mark
Can anyone who has the Oppo and the N75 share their views on which has the better picture quality? Thanks in advance
only thing I sit here wondering is if I do not calibrate the player since I have my PIO 5060HD calibrated.... :(
Fry's in San Jose, CA has 24.
I noticed in the master thread for the NS975V that the player was not outputting the HD color color matrix, result in a "green depression" in display devices that were expecting the HD color matrix (as opposed to NTSC). Does anybody know if the N75 outputs in the HD color matrix?
Antonpd 03-31-06, 02:56 PM Just picked up a N75 at CC in North Jersey for $129.99. Can't wait to test it out.
rnick1976 03-31-06, 03:06 PM That's it. I'm hittin' the CC and BB in Natick on the way home. All you people getting this player are making me insanely jealous!
I have the Oppo and the NS75 and will watch tonight and try to report tomorrow.
Picked one up at the CC in Glen Burnie, Maryland today. Hooked it up to my Pio 1130, running the Sony 75 at 720p - find in preferrable to 1080i on the Pio.
Still experimenting. Will report back.

Best Buy in Framingham, MA has a whole bunch of them.
Circuit City in Natick, MA also has a bunch.
Picked mine up from the Best Buy, just had a chance to quickly watch the opening scene from Star Wars III. For what I saw, I'm happy. Everyone just remember to switch the audio out to Dolby from PCM before starting your first disc, and you'll be good to go! :)
With stores getting them so frequently this should make for an interesting weekend full of reviews!

Tigershark 03-31-06, 06:56 PM Checked with CC and BB in Hawaii - not available. Looks like I have to order from either Amazon or Crutchfield.
Ace of Space 03-31-06, 07:19 PM 6 more at the BB in the Blossom Hill area of San Jose. Just come home with one of them. Will be watching King Kong tonight on my KDS-R60XBR1.
Just Picked up one in CC in Huntington Beach CA. on shelf no placard or display, Silver
Gonna compare it to my Oppo 971H
Finally got my HDMI cable yesterday and hooked up the NS75H. I'm having it output a 720p signal to a 32" Sharp LCD. The main difference I notice between the 480p and 720p/1080i setting is that the colors are more vibrant with the HD resolutions. I would have to say the main reason for using it vs the old interlaced player I've been using is the pop that the colors provide. I think the colors provide the illusion of more detail.
Blacker Than Black - I had to use the Cinema 1 setting to get it to pass BTB via HDMI. I was a little frustrated at first because it took me a while to figure that out.
Layer changes are noticeable, but acceptable. Better than the old Sony player I was using.
On the whole it was very easy to get a good looking picture with the NS75H and it's a keeper for me. I think it's a very good player and is a great value.

That's actually good to note ... at the CC in Natick, there is NO display for them. They're simply stacked on the lower shelves, no floor model, displayed price, or anything.
CT_Wiebe 04-01-06, 12:14 AM I am waiting for your reviews with "baited breath". I don't want to spend a bucket on an up-scaling player and I need one that will provide a good 480p output over its component outputs as well as upconversion over HDMI, preferably, rather than DVI. I had been considering the Oppo 971H (best upconversion quality, DVI output, terrible 480i and no 480p, over component) or the Panasonic S97 (good 480i/480p component output and 720p/1090i over HDMI output that is almost as good as the Oppo, but about $50 more).
I like the Sony DVD players good component output and no MBE, but the shift issue with the NS70 put me off (and Secrets hasn't reviewed it). The last Sony they reviewed was the NS775H which didn't get very good marks, but did show very flat component output frequency response.
artimp -- I'd really like to hear your comparison to the Oppo since that was at the top of my short list.
Itsdon -- I sent you a PM, yesterday, regarding your results with your PJ.
PS -- I have a front projector and a 106" screen, so details are important to me. My current primary DVD player is a Panasonic DVD-RP91.
Ace of Space 04-01-06, 12:27 AM Just watched King Kong on my 60 inch SXRD and it was just incredible. My previous player was a DCDi equiped Zenith DVB318 and I always had macroblocking problems with that player in dark scenes upconverting to 1080i thru component. The NS75H using HDMI set at 1080i is a very noticable improvement, no macroblocking at all and very nice blacks. The picture is definitely better than the Zenith. This player will tide me over until the true HiDef players come down in price.
CT_Wiebe 04-01-06, 01:23 AM Ace -- I would expect that, since Sony uses it's own designed chip for de-interlacing & scaling/up-converting. That's the kind of result I'm looking for.
All devices using the Faroudja chips (of various flavors) will show macro-blocking (MBE) to one degree or another. The problem is that most of the other designs either have more de-interlacing flaws or upconverting flaws than the Faroudja chips don't have (but they also don't have MBE).
TwinTurboZX 04-01-06, 02:43 AM I just picked one up from BB in West Covina, they had 4 in the box but no display. I'll be connecting it to a Sony XBR960, will give my impressions later on. :)
scherer326 04-01-06, 09:21 AM please post settings for the player if you can. will help others out.
That's actually good to note ... at the CC in Natick, there is NO display for them. They're simply stacked on the lower shelves, no floor model, displayed price, or anything.
The BB here in Summerlin/Las Vegas was the same way. About a dozen boxes on the bottom shelf, no display or price tag
logo29a 04-01-06, 11:28 AM The only place I could find around here that had em was Hifi Buys. They didn't have one in the store, only the warehouse. Should be in by noon on Monday. I can't wait! I was hoping to have one hooked up last night. :(
Claus-- I will post it as soon as I can this weekend.
Alright, what gives? I was just at BB in Sanford, FL. The guy there told me that they had just been notified that the NS75H will not be launched until May. I see that a lot of you have already gotten them from BB elsewhere. Has anyone else been told this. I wanted to pick it up locally, but guess I will have to order it online.
Cinema_Nut 04-01-06, 05:16 PM I Picked up the Sony DVP-NS75H at Best Buy Yesterday.
Replaces my Samsung upscaling 830 which had DVI output failure about 18 months ago. Sent in for warranty and never received it back. (UPS lost it in the mail supposedly) Took more than 8 months and 40+ phone calls to samsung's useless customer support to get a refund.
So I have been using my 5 year old Sony for the last 11 months while waiting for new crop of upscalers to come out.
Needless to say I definetely will not purchase from or deal with Samsung again!
My Samsung HLN-5065W Dlp has been a stellar performer though I must say...
Like many others here, I will not spend big bucks on a Pioneer Elite or Denon DVD player when it is quickly becoming obsolete while the HD-DVD Blu-Ray issue washes out.
So this is a fill in for the next 18 months when I can maybe get a high-end unit that plays DVD, HD-DVD, and Blu-Ray in one unit.
Ok, here is the issue:
I am impressed with the HDMI colors and black level. I believe they look much better than the Samsung 830 unit.
I haven't watched any audio benchmark "Saving Private Ryan" type movies yet, but the sound seems descent after proper setup.
The thing I haven't been able to see yet is 1920x1080i HDMI or for that matter 480p.
The setup menu let's you explicitly set 480p, 720p, or 1080i scaling, or AUTO in which the unit will scale to your diisplay's native resolution.
In my Samsung HLN's case this is 1280x720p. This looks nice but I prefer 1080i. I can set the scaling to 1080i in the setup, and the display flickers for a few seconds as if it is switching, but my HLN display then indicates that it is still in 720p...
I can do this same operation with the Motorola HD Cable box and it will stick at 1080i, 480p, 720p, whatever I decide, and the HLN display will accomodate and report back the selected resolution faithfully.
Is this a Sony/Samsung or HDMI/DVI issue? The HDMI is converted to DVI with an adapter as my HLN has DVI in only, no HDMI but it shouldn't matter.
My Samsung had the Firmware and digital boards updated about 6 months ago, so that should be ok.
I really like this unit otherwise, although they could have make the Remote keys glow in the dark (they do not).
I also had the option of purchasing the new Samsung (950?), but considering the hell I went through with their service, I will not even consider their products ever again...
Anyways I have 30 days to figure this out before I need to return it.
Any ideas?

I bought one today at BB in Washington DC on Wisconsin AVe.
The price was $129.00. They had five left at 3pm.

I'm using Cinema 1 because I couldn't get blacker than black (BTB) with Standard. The Pluge pattern in Digital Video Essentials works fine when the 75H is set to Cinema 1.

I would guess that you should expect that the NS75H will not score as high as the Oppo 971 in the Secrets testing. It will be interesting to see how it does score though - if it's more like the NS975 that scored 84 via component or one of the other Sony's that scores in the 50's to 60's. It already beats the NS975 in at least one category in that it passes blacker than black via HDMI. The initial reaction on this player is amazingly positive. It seems like with most players these days, quite often someone has found some big issue by now.
Alright, what gives? I was just at BB in Sanford, FL. The guy there told me that they had just been notified that the NS75H will not be launched until May. Thursday night my local Best Buy said it'd be weeks before they got it. They had one out on display the next day and had a shelf full of them. I pretty much ignore what the what the guys on the floor say as most of them have no idea of what they are talking about anyway.

Ditch the HLN :D. Joking. I had the HLN617W several years ago too. Since there's no setting that I recall on the HLN and I can't think of any settings on the player that would cause this to happen, the only thing I can think of to tell you is to disconnect and reconnect your connections to make sure the cables are seated properly. If that doesn't work, I'd take your player back and try another. You might even want to try the Rear Projection forum and post it in the Samsung HLN thread (after all these years it's still floating around :D).
Good Luck!
Picked up the DVP-NS75H at CC tonight - they just got 2 in today in Erie, PA. Works great with my Panny plasma. No image shift problems, although I found that feeding the signal as 480p over HDMI and letting the Panny's scalers do the rest worked the best. There are 2 new options I saw vs. the 70H - both are found by pressing display twice. There is a macroblocking and a mosquito effect filter. Either can be selected independently. With the limited material I watched, the picture seemed best with both set to off, which is the default. Overall, a great player. FYI - the PQ differences between feeding different signals and using various filters are slight. The picture looks great with all, better than with an old Samsung 480i (non-progressive) dvd/vcr combo I had hooked up with component - but again, not a huge leap forward on my display. This is probably due to the integrated upscaling and PQ circuitry in the TH-50PX60U.
TwinTurboZX 04-02-06, 01:27 AM Well, I hooked mine up to my Sony 34XBR960 and compared it to my old NS575P. The picture on the 75H @ 480p/720p/1080i over HDMI was considerably softer compared to the 575P player @480i over component. A lot of detail was getting lost compared to my old player. I guess the 75H doesn't really give you an advantage when used with a CRT or particularly the high end Sony CRT's. Anyone else tried hooking up the 75H to a CRT, what do you think?
The BB here in Summerlin/Las Vegas was the same way. About a dozen boxes on the bottom shelf, no display or price tag
Went back and got one. Connected to TV via HDMI. Going to watch some movies, play with some settings and report back tommorow.

I'm getting mine from crutchfield (lowest price ANYWHERE for the dvp-ns75h) this coming thursday and I have a JVC CRT.
Anybody else with a CRT feel the same way?
Antonpd 04-02-06, 04:13 AM I'm having an issue with the Rewind and Fast Forward modes. I cannot get it to go more than x1 speed. The manual says it can do x2 and x3 speed either way but it's not working. I've tried it on both LotR and History of Violence dvds. Is this a flaw or bug? Anyone else experiencing this? If this is indeed a flaw its going back and I'll just wait for the new Pannys.

Cinema_Nut 04-02-06, 05:48 AM Ditch the HLN :D.
Good Luck!
Like others I tried the Sony NS70 several months back, but the shift issue with the NS70 put me off and the color was way dissapointing over HDMI. It did scale 1080i on my HLN though. I guess I will need to take the NS75 back and try it with a Samsung demo at Best Buy to get the whole story...
dtsfanoh 04-02-06, 08:20 AM Thursday night my local Best Buy said it'd be weeks before they got it. They had one out on display the next day and had a shelf full of them. I pretty much ignore what the what the guys on the floor say as most of them have no idea of what they are talking about anyway.
Amen to that one!
cerebralcaustic 04-02-06, 05:26 PM Is anyone experiencing slow loading times when playing a DVD? My player takes around 10 seconds of "Loading" from when the tray is closed to when the DVD actually starts up. Is that common?
gwsmith 04-02-06, 05:38 PM Is anyone experiencing slow loading times when playing a DVD? My player takes around 10 seconds of "Loading" from when the tray is closed to when the DVD actually starts up. Is that common?I have three players....Sony 75H, Panasonic S97S, and Pio 563A. Never timed them with a stopwatch, but 10 seconds doesn't sound unreasonable on first loading for any of them....might be less, but on that order. ;)
