Marcus Carr 12-23-10, 12:33 PM FOX43 First to Broadcast News in High Definition State of the art facility and newscast to debut in January 12:12 p.m. EST, December 23, 2010 YORK, PA — As a leader in innovative local news since the launch of FOX43 NEWS AT 10 in 1994, WPMT FOX43 is proud to announce that the FOX43 NEWS operation is going high definition in January. FOX43 will be the first news station in the market to go HD. The conversion to high definition will create the market’s first and only true HD news operation. Using high definition cameras both in the studio and in the field, FOX43 NEWS will provide a showcase of high definition footage and live video in every single newscast. Thanks to newly rebuilt editing suites and improved on-air playback technology, viewers will experience an end-to-end high definition newscast unlike anything else in the market. Riding along with this renovation is a brand new studio set, specifically built with high definition broadcasting in mind (pictures attached.) The set is under construction right now and will debut as part of the HD rollout in January 2011. FOX43’s conversion to HD is more than a simple upscaling of standard definition video to the now-familiar 16x9 aspect ratio. FOX43 NEWS is proud to have invested in a full HD operation, from robotic cameras in the studio to top-of-the-line HD editing gear. The benefit to viewers will be apparent in the crisp, high-quality 720p HD video. Prior to this advancement, the Harrisburg/Lancaster/Lebanon/York market was one of the largest in the country to be entirely without high-def news operations. FOX43 is proud to be the sole mover of change in this regard, and maintain the station’s reputation as a leader in local news. FOX43 NEWS encompasses four separate newscasts: FOX43 NEWS AT 10, FOX43 NEWS AT 6:30, FOX43 NEWS AT 11, and FOX43 MORNING NEWS. All four broadcasts will switch to HD, presenting a total of six hours per weekday of high definition local news. The all-new, all-HD FOX43 NEWS can be found on local cable outlets or over the air on digital channel 43-1. When you see it, you’ll know. As a result, all of Rhode Island's TV stations still air their local news shows entirely in 4:3 SD for the foreseeable future. WJAR is such a massive joke. EVERYTHING they broadcast (except for network programming), is in SD. Their station ID screen is SD, which causes the programming to obnoxiously break out of HD. Their school closings graphic is in SD, and the graphic itself takes up like 70% of the screen. Just hope you don't catch it during network programming. Even during the midterm elections their local poll results were in SD in national news coverage, so if you wanted to watch NBC for national election results on WJAR, you weren't watching it in HD. I honestly don't know how a TV station can be that technologically inept in 2011. It's not 1991 anymore for crying out loud. In comparison, WPRI/WNAC air just about everything except their newscast in HD. Station IDs, closing graphics, and other graphics that may need to get thrown onto the screen. Even WLNE, who doesn't have a pot to **** in, somehow has the capability to not break the programming out of HD for their own graphics. WJAR still is in first place in a majority of the timeslots, which WPRI breathing down their neck. How are they still in first place? How are they still in first place? Because of their colorful NBC logo attached to their channel number? Conversely, what good is a station broadcasting everything in HD if that station does not have the proper personalities for its news shows, especially if the most dominant station continues to broadcast everything outside of network programming in 4:3 SD? The reason for one station's first-place showing has something to do with not only the personalities of that station, but also the relative longetivity of those personalities at that same station. After all, if a market's most technologically advanced station's news department has all "nobodies" (meaning those people who are virtual unknowns or who are very bland in their persentations) - or worse, a bunch of novices that can't even do the news presentations or reports properly - then that station deserves to go nowhere but off the air permanently (since that station would have spent way too much money on technology but virtually nothing whatsoever on personnel, and had likely not have anywhere near sufficient money to pay its employees). Marcus Carr 01-19-11, 11:22 PM TV stations transition to HD for local news broadcasts BY JEFF GOODMAN, Californian staff writer Last Updated Wednesday, Jan 19 2011 03:41 PM KBAK Channel 29 began broadcasting local news in high definition Sunday, according to a news release, making it the first of the three main news channels to complete the switch. The CBS-affiliate station, which last year invested in HD cameras and editing equipment, was already offering HD viewing for some non-local network programming. It began using a made-for-HD news set in May. "This next step illustrates our commitment to bring our community the best that local television has to offer," KBAK vice president Teresa Burgess said in a statement. Representatives at the other two local news stations said this week they weren't far behind in the upgrade process. KGET Channel 17 will make the transition to HD this Sunday, according to a news release. In addition to the NBC-affiliate station's in-studio output, all of its news video from the field will be shot in HD, the release said. The makeover will also include tweaks to its weather forecast set. Steve McEvoy, general manager of local ABC affiliate KERO Channel 23, said his station expects to broadcast local news in high definition by the end of this year but that it hasn't finalized a launch date. "It's several years in the making," McEvoy said. "We're making sure we get it right." More than 50 percent of U.S. households have HD television sets, according to a recent Nielsen Company study. http://www.bakersfield.com/news/local/x1937969606/TV-stations-transition-to-HD-for-local-news-broadcasts Marcus Carr 01-19-11, 11:27 PM WZDC Goes HD For Local News in D.C. A station's plant (infrastructure) could still be analog. That makes it more difficult, but not impossible (our local NBC affiliate is still analog). The news is produced in a whole separate area of the station, with its own batch of equipment, which is fed to master control. KFDA-TV, the Drewry CBS affiliate serving Amarillo, Texas in DMA 131 became was the first station in the group to launch its local newscast in HD on February 23rd. Seven GY-HM790U cameras from JVC are currently being used in the field at the station. Next on the list for the launch of a HD newscast is KXXV, the Drewry-owned ABC affiliate serving Waco-Temple-Bryan, Texas in DMA 89. Mike Lee, vice president and general manager of KXXV added in a statement that the group's choice of JVC ProHD camcorders, particularly the GY-HM790U, was a result of several factors, including picture quality and the fact that they use inexpensive SDHC media cards, providing them with a cost-effective solution that helped the station group get the most out of its news budget. The current workflow at KXXV involves ingesting tape-based footage to its Adobe Premiere CS5 NLE systems for post, then dubbing completed packages to tape for playback. With the move to a file-based system (along with its HD upgrade), the station will save on maintenance costs for its aging VTRs and camcorders and it spends less time ingesting and transcoding files. KXXV is expected to make its own transition to local HD news on April 25. It has purchased 10 GY-HM790Us and three GY-HM700Us with Canon lenses for its main facility in Waco and for KRHD, its digital low-power satellite station in Bryan/College Station, Texas. Drewry's other stations that have not yet made the transition to local HD news are KSWO and KAUZ, serving the combined market of Lawton, Okla., and Wichita Falls, Texas (DMA 146), and KWES in Odessa-Midland, Texas (DMA 151). Separately, JVC also announced that KSHB, the NBC affiliate for Kansas City, Mo. (DMA 31) owned by Scripps TV Station Group, has purchased 21 GY-HM790U ProHD camcorders. Most of the new cameras are being used for ENG, but one is located in the newsroom for breaking news reports and another is mounted on a jib in the news studio. KSHB began using its new camcorders in January. KSHB also plans to purchase 11 KA-AS790G ASI modules, which will be utilized with the station's long cable runs in Arrowhead Stadium for Kansas City Chiefs coverage and Kauffman Stadium for Kansas City Royals coverage. http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/466084-Drewry_Communications_Selects_JVC_ProHD.php sebenste 04-04-11, 11:39 PM As of their 6 PM newscast tonight. Buffalo, NY remains the largest Nielsen DMA without a true HD local newscast. vallieone 06-24-11, 06:20 PM WWOR-TV in New York is scheduled switch to HD June 27th with their new 10 O'clock newscast. Drewdawg 06-25-11, 06:08 PM WWOR-TV in New York is scheduled switch to HD June 27th with their new 10 O'clock newscast. They have been running promos all week in HD. In Los Angeles Fox owned My13 runs their news at 11pm as it's basically the Fox 11 news at 11 on channel 13. Because of this 13 was able to go HD as soon as 11 did and Angelinos get another half hour of local Fox news. Also, the two Fox owned stations don't compete with each other for news ratings. Just saying.:) foxeng 06-26-11, 06:52 AM Due to a legal ruling years ago that dealt with WWOR when it was owned by General Tire and had the call letters WOR-TV and has remained in place through subsequent owners and linked into the one VHF per state ruling in the analog days (hence the change of call letters of COL from NYC to Secauscas, NJ) and now law suits by filed by groups who say that WWOR is more a NY station and not a NJ station, unlike KTTV and KCOP both licensed to LA, WNYW and WWOR are not co located in the same manner. They don't share studios, nor location due to the above. While easy to link WNYW/WWOR to KTTV/KCOP and why things aren't done the same way, the legal landscape for the two markets with those stations are completely different and are handled as such. Anifan 06-26-11, 10:15 PM WSAZ news in Huntington/Charleston WV quietly went HD today. First HD broadcast in the market. Overall very nice. Only studio cameras and graphic systems (news and weather) are HD. Pre-recorded stories and ENG is still widescreen SD - and quite poor looking, almost like you-tube. It is bad enough that they macroblock like mad because their bitrate for HD is so bad (two SD streams and 5 Mbps set aside for mobile and other experiments). It really showed last night when they were covering the Warner Park fireworks. The anamorphic widescreen SD upconvert really made the fireworks look bad. No idea when they are finally going to upgrade their remote trucks. aptt 07-09-11, 04:33 PM WNEP in Scranton, PA will go HD at 6 p.m. this evening. jmoz2989 07-09-11, 06:04 PM WNEP in Scranton, PA will go HD at 6 p.m. this evening. They actually did advertise this fact, but they called it "digital wide" not HD. pahdtv 08-29-11, 04:45 PM WGAL-tv channel 8, Lancaster,Pa. tonight at 5:00 P.M. announced their news program in HD ! agus0103 09-01-11, 04:02 PM A few stations with HD or widescreen newscasts are affected by affiliation switches that occurred today. In Springfield, MO, KSFX, which has HD newscasts, went from being a Fox affiliate to an independent under call sign KOZL. The new Fox affiliate in the market, KRBK, does not have any newscasts at the present time. In Boise, ID, KTRV, the only station with HD newscasts in the market, has also gone from being a Fox affiliate to an independent. KNIN, which has widescreen newscasts produced by KIVI (ABC), has taken over the Fox affiliation after being a CW affiliate. The new CW station in the market is on a 4:3 subchannel of KBOI (CBS), which has widescreen newscasts on the primary subchannel. In addition, Nielsen has a new list (http://www.nielsen.com/content/dam/corporate/us/en/public%20factsheets/tv/nielsen-2012-local-DMA-TV-penetration.pdf) of DMA rankings to be used during the 2011-2012 TV season. The list (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=20506933#post20506933) of stations with HD or widescreen SD newscasts on page 63 of this thread has been revised to reflect the changes. One thing of note, since the Ft. Smith-Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers market is has gone from #100 to #101, every one of the top 100 markets in the United States now has at least one station broadcasting news in HD or, in the case of Flint-Saginaw-Bay City, in widescreen SD. JoelWNelson 09-02-11, 03:58 PM KTIV (NBC 4, Sioux City, IA) has been doing local news in HD since late June or July. jspENC 09-04-11, 04:10 PM I gotta wonder now that my local market of Greenville, New Bern, Washington; NC is in the top 100 if WITN and WNCT (the NBC Gray owned and CBS Media Gen.)will rush to jump into HD.? WCTI/WFXI the ABC and FOX have been doing HD news for over a year. The competition seems to really be on fire right now in this market, as I hear the ratings are really close. compubit 09-05-11, 11:23 AM KWHY, Channel 22 in Los Angeles has local news, in Spanish, in HD. (Spanish independent) KWHY used to be owned by NBC Universal, but was sold. Not sure if KVEA is involved in the production, but one package had a T52 mic flag in the package. I believe that this makes every station in LA that broadcasts in HD and has a news department has HD News. J Gt1racer 09-06-11, 04:18 PM I don't know if this has been mentioned but on WLNE (ABC Providence/New Bedford) Affiliate's Website it states Coming Soon in High Definition. jmoz2989 09-13-11, 11:01 AM Nexstar stations WUTR and WFXV are now (as of 9/12/11) broadcasting evening newscasts in high definition to the Utica, NY market. agus0103 09-13-11, 11:05 AM Just in time for the start of the new TV season, these stations have begun HD newscasts: Springfield, MA - WGGB (ABC), WGGB-DT2 (Fox, HD on cable only) Nashville, TN - WZTV (Fox) Quad Cities, IA-IL - WQAD (ABC), KLJB (Fox) Utica, NY - WUTR (ABC), WFXV (Fox) Additionally KHBS (ABC) in the Ft. Smith-Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers, AR market has started broadcasting widescreen SD newscasts. This makes #117 Fargo-Valley City, ND the largest TV market in the United States without HD or widescreen SD newscasts. sonicdoommario 09-13-11, 04:22 PM WLNE (ABC in Providence, RI) doing HD news as of today. I don't see an article about it or something on their website, but I'm watching it right now. And wow, a Springfield, MA station doing news in HD? Never thought I'd see the day. agus0103 09-13-11, 05:14 PM Something I missed when I saw WGGB had gone to HD news is that the upgrade also covers the cable-only HD feed of WGGB-DT2, according to this article (http://www.tvtechnology.com/article/123684) published last month before the transition took place. compubit 09-13-11, 09:28 PM WKPT-TV / 19 / ABC in Kingsport, TN is airing their "newscasts" in HD - the newscasts use a virtual set and is mostly "rip and read" 5 minute (6:25pm) and 10 minute (11:00pm) with HD graphics using a single camera. But they're promoted as being in HD... Jim RJL1965 09-14-11, 12:11 AM Also, add two Allbritton stations to the list of stations that air newscasts in HD: 1) KTUL (ABC) in Tulsa, OK has been airing newscasts in HD since August 22. KTUL's upgrade to HD makes kotv and kqcw (both owned by the same company and operated from the same facility) the only two stations in the Tulsa market that still broadcast in SD widescreen rather than true HD. 2) KATV (ABC) in Little Rock, AR became the last "Big Four" network-affiliated station in that market to upgrade to HD newscasts (having made the upgrade on September 10). aptt 09-14-11, 12:52 PM WGGB in Springfield, MA officially went to HD at noon today. agus0103 09-15-11, 05:52 PM Some more recent HD debuts: The ABC affiliate in Birmingham, AL (officially WBMA is the market affiliate, but in reality satellites WCFT in Tuscaloosa and WJSU in Anniston are). There are some examples of the new look here (http://www.youtube.com/user/tayloroux#p/u) on YouTube. Roanoke-Lynchburg, VA - WSET (ABC) WRIC (ABC) in Richmond, VA was to begin HD newscasts today, but according to a post on the station's Facebook page the launch was postponed indefinitely in order to "fix a few technical snags." Additionally, I discovered that independent station WMNN-LD in the Traverse City-Cadillac, MI market has been doing HD newscasts since the station signed on in February. So far this is the only station in the market with HD or widescreen news. compubit 09-16-11, 04:07 PM Grrr... I'm in Richmond now and was hoping to catch WRIC, but will have to wait... Yes they do, according to the Wikipedia entry for the station and records (http://transition.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/tvq?call=WBMA) in the FCC database. The license to cover (http://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/app_det.pl?Application_id=1428963) the construction permit for WBMA-LD on channel 40 was granted June 6. sonicdoommario 09-20-11, 09:26 PM WPRI (CBS out of Providence, RI) began doing HD newscasts today. Their newscasts on WNAC (FOX) are also in HD too. In the matter of 4 months this year (from May to September), Providence went from a DMA without any HD newscasts to a DMA where all of its newscasts are in HD. Also confirmed on Wikipedia. Also, there is another affiliation change. WSBK (Independent out of Boston) is now a MyNetworkTV affiliate. Marcus Carr 09-21-11, 05:12 PM WJZ is doing live remotes and reports in HD. compubit 09-29-11, 11:22 PM Well, DC got a double whammy of local news OTA in HD. WZDC-LD (Telemundo 25) is on the air in HD (originally when they converted to digital, they went 480i SD), but are now 1080i. The station had been doing HD news, but only on cable in DC (no suburbs). News is now OTA HD WFDC (Univision 14) has also made the jump to HD - I'm guessing WZDC going HD OTA may have pushed them... It's new this week - may even be today. Still a few things to work out - wide shot looks out of focus (1 shots look nice and sharp); weather graphics are 4x3 SD & black bars on the side; had some cases of SD video being stretched to 16x9. The station also has the capability of HD local ad inserts. Jim Vinny* 09-30-11, 10:24 PM News is in HD now. RJL1965 10-03-11, 08:07 PM Company-wise, that makes Scripps the first to have all of its stations broadcast local news in HD (at least the in-studio portions)... That distinction will disappear soon (unless KERO-TV (ABC) in Bakersfield, CA upgrades its newscasts to HD soon): Scripps is buying up McGraw-Hill's entire TV stations group for $212M. The three other ABC affiliates in the McGraw-Hill group are (in order of descending market rank): KMGH-TV Denver, WRTV Indianapolis and KGTV San Diego. McGraw-Hill also owns several low-power Azteca América affiliates, which are included in the sale to Scripps. Before the launch, the Macon market, which is #118, had been the 2nd largest in the country without local news in either HD or widescreen SD. That title now looks to go to the #124 market, centered in Lafayette, LA. RJL1965 11-17-11, 09:49 PM KSAS (Fox) in Wichita, KS may have to be changed from capitals (KSAS) to lowercase (ksas) starting January 1, 2012. The news share agreement with KWCH (CBS) is set to expire on December 31 of this year, and KSAS entered into a new agreement with ksnw (NBC) in that market. ksnw presently airs only the weather portion of its newscasts in HD but everything else in widescreen SD. What is currently the KWCH-produced 9 p.m. newscast (currently simulcast on both KSAS and KSCW) will be shown exclusively on KSCW (CW). RJL1965 11-19-11, 11:17 PM Also, in September 2011, WBFS (MyTV) cancelled its 10 p.m. weeknight newscast. As such, it no longer airs a local newscast. This was the first, and as of yet the only, station in the market to upgrade to HD newscasts. The upgrade happened while the station was Boise's Fox affiliate, but that affiliation was discontinued on September 1st. The new Fox affiliate, former CW affiliate KNIN, as well as the "big three" network affiliates in Boise all air newscasts in widescreen SD. foxeng 12-06-11, 06:39 AM WFMY Greensboro, NC began HD in the studio on November 13th. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WFMY-TV The market now has two HD newscasts (WGHP which stated Sept 2010) and WFMY. Some packages "might" be HD - don't look as good as live shots, but better than 16:9 SD. Apparently they have new editing etc as well. austinmm6 12-11-11, 10:09 PM WAAY in Huntsville began HD newscasts today at 5:00. I haven't checked to see if the news they provide for WZDX is also HD. Jeremy W 12-20-11, 11:42 PM Interestingly, in our market in Champaign-Urbana, IL, WICD the ABC affiliate is showing syndicated programs in HD but newscasts are still in SD. Syndicated programming is much easier to show in HD than newscasts. Marty Milton 12-21-11, 01:51 AM Syndicated programming is much easier to show in HD than newscasts. That makes sense. The only standout would appear to be MyNetwork station KRON in San Francisco, which evidently continues to air news in widescreen SD. RJL1965 01-02-12, 06:20 PM As you might have known, Scripps completed its purchase of the McGraw-Hill stations back this past Friday (December 30). Of that group, KERO had plans to upgrade its newscasts to HD (but has evidently not yet completed the upgrade). The other three ABC stations in the ex-McGraw-Hill group are already airing newscasts in HD. (In another station group acquisition news, Sinclair (SBGI) is in the process of swallowing up two sizable television station groups - the Four Points Media group and the Freedom Communications television group, with stations such as KUTV, WPEC, WRGB and KEYE moving into the same ownership blanket as KABB, WBFF and WSYX, among others.) And speaking of New Young Broadcasting (essentially the bankrupt Young Broadcasting that's now controlled by secured creditors), all of the stations that are airing their local news in HD except WATE and WLNS are managed by Gray Television. (The other Young station not managed by Gray, KRON, is also the only station in that group still broadcasting in SD 16:9.) Gray is not allowed to manage WATE or WLNS because Gray already owns and operates rival stations (WVLT and WILX, respectively) in those two markets. And we will wait until this evening for the status of the newscasts on KSAS (Fox) in Wichita, KS. KSNW (NBC), which is currently the only station in that market that broadcasts in SD 16:9 rather than full HD, has taken over the production of the KSAS newscasts. Topp Notch 01-02-12, 09:31 PM Reno NV has all network news in hd and i think the weather is in hd also for all. aptt 01-04-12, 11:58 AM The Sinclair/Four Points Media acquisition was finalized yesterday. RJL1965 01-05-12, 07:40 PM The Sinclair/Four Points Media acquisition was finalized yesterday. Yes. And the two stations with local newscasts in that ex-Four Points group - KUTV Salt Lake City and KEYE Austin - have already been broadcasting in HD from the studio. Their field video footage is still mostly 4:3 SD, however. (It should be noted that all of the ex-Four Points stations were once co-owned with the CBS network itself.) In addition, of the Freedom stations also being acquired by Sinclair, only five of the stations are doing their local news in HD: WPEC West Palm Beach, WWMT Kalamazoo, WRGB Albany and KFDM Beaumont (all CBS affiliates; the weekday morning and weeknight 10 p.m. news shows on CW affiliate WCWN are produced by duopoly-mate WRGB). WLAJ (ABC) in Lansing also airs news briefs produced by sister WWMT in HD; however, it is not included among the five stations because it does not have a news department of its own nor does it air a full news show at all. compubit 01-07-12, 11:32 AM Newschannel 8 in Washington, DC has gone HD (finally). Per Rob Feder in TimeOutChicago.com (http://timeoutchicago.com/arts-culture/chicago-media-blog/15078323/crain): The new year brought a new look to Chicago’s top-rated Spanish-language television station. Univision WGBO-Channel 66 converted its news operation to HD and unveiled a new set for Noticias Univision Chicago, the 5 and 10pm newcasts anchored by Jorge Barbosa and Angelica Atondo. “It is important for our station to remain ahead of the curve when it comes to reporting news to our viewers,” news director Marisol Seda said in a statement. Some pics are posted here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=21480195#post21480195). RJL1965 01-12-12, 05:01 PM Also, two more changes: WDJT (CBS) in Milwaukee became the final station in that market to launch its newscasts in HD on Sunday evening, January 8 at 10 p.m., a few hours prior to the launch of CBS's new weekday morning news show, CBS Morning News. The studio and most (but not all) field shots are in HD. The upgrade does not include the news shows it produces for its low-power sister outlets since those stations do not broadcast in HD. Since KSNW has evidently not upgraded its newscasts from its current SD 16x9 format, that station took over the newscast production for KSAS (Fox) in Wichita, KS. As a result, KSAS should be changed to lowercase (or, KSAS -> ksas) on the list. mbclev 01-13-12, 03:06 AM WWLP (NBC, Springfield, MA) now with HD news, according to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WWLP agus0103 01-17-12, 04:52 PM The Fargo, ND market got local news in widescreen SD a few days ago thanks to WDAY (ABC). On another note, according to their respective Wikipedia pages, WFXG (Fox), WJBF (ABC), and WAGT (NBC) - all in the Augusta, GA market - began broadcasting news in HD last fall. The CBS affiliate in the market had already been airing local news in HD for months. aptt 01-24-12, 10:17 AM KCRG in Cedar Rapids switched to HD on Saturday January 21. kcrg.com/yournewnine (http://kcrg.com/yournewnine) RJL1965 02-02-12, 10:37 AM According to Wikipedia, WIVB (CBS) and WNLO (CW) in Buffalo started doing their newscasts in HD on February 1. They are the last major broadcast news operation in that market to upgrade to HD. This leaves WNYO (MyTV) still with 4:3 SD newscasts because that station's master control is not capable of airing WGRZ's HD newscasts in the format. WGRZ did upgrade its studio cameras to HD on October 29 of last year - over one month after WKBW's upgrade to "HD". Thus, although WGRZ was the first to go 16x9, it was the second to go HD. WSJV (Fox, South Bend, IN) now with HD local news, according to this post: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=21515608&postcount=3690 That makes WSJV the last major news operation in the South Bend-Elkhart market to go HD for its newscasts. RJL1965 02-06-12, 02:23 PM By the way, as noted in Wikipedia, the last "in-house" news operation of a CBS-owned property that remained in 4:3 SD, WWJ-TV and WKBD in Detroit, now airs their morning news show in HD as of February 2. However, they should be currently excluded from the table because they still do not have a full-time news department nor do they air regular evening or late-night newscasts. compubit 02-11-12, 03:23 PM However, they should be currently excluded from the table because they still do not have a full-time news department nor do they air regular evening or late-night newscasts. I disagree. Both stations are airing a news product - albeit not in the traditional news at morning, noon, 5, 6 & 11 - and it's in HD. Using that rationale, numerous stations who have news outsourced then wouldn't then be considered. Stations that use(d) INN out of Davenport (and/or whomever replaced them) shouldn't be counted, as they have no more of a news staff than WWJ: 1 or two local reporters and everything else (anchors, weather forecasters, camera operators) is coming from a "newscast mill". WWJ/WKBD at least gave local on-air talent. KMAX in Sacramento operates the same way - only a morning newscast and they're on the list. Also, Fox affiliates that have outsourced news... Hopefully, this will eventually jumpstart WWJ's news department and they can go back to offering local evening news - maybe focusing at an alternate time such as 6-7pm for the early evening newscast and push CBS Evening news to 7. Granted, this is Detroit with all of its issues... Not going to happen. RJL1965 02-13-12, 05:04 PM Not going to happen. At least not for the foreseeable future. CBS itself has been cutting budgets over the past few years. Then there are the ratings: Channel 62 has never had much, if any, of what we consider a "local" newscast to begin with. (And this dates back to its early days as WGPR-TV back in 1975.) That's not to mention that WWJ-TV has been one of CBS's weakest owned-and-operated stations, with its prime-time ratings underperforming the network's nationwide average (its prime-time ratings among the "Big Four" outlets in Detroit are generally in third place, behind WXYZ and WJBK; only WDIV has lower prime-time ratings than WWJ). When its sister station WKBD-TV shuttered its own in-house operation in 2002, ABC affiliate WXYZ-TV produced a 10 pm newscast for WKBD for a couple of years. Since the formation of The CW, WKBD has since fallen behind WMYD and on occasion behind even WADL in the ratings. By the way, WXYZ (and WEWS in Cleveland) almost dropped ABC in favor of CBS when WJBK (and WJW Cleveland) switched to Fox in 1994. That was until ABC came up with a large-scale deal involving most if not all of the Scripps-owned stations that would ultimately keep WXYZ and WEWS affiliated with ABC. (That deal called for four of the Scripps-owned stations that weren't already affiliated with ABC to switch to that network: Former Fox affiliates KNXV in Phoenix and WFTS in Tampa Bay, NBC affiliate WMAR in Baltimore and CBS affiliate WCPO in Cincinnati; in the case of WCPO, it had to wait for ABC's affiliation deal with WKRC to expire in June 1996 before it could make the switch to ABC.) Scripps also briefly owned the FCC license of KENS (CBS) in San Antonio during Fall 1997 but never held operational control of that station (as it would be traded to Belo, who actually operated the station via a time brokerage agreement during Scripps ownership, a month and a half later). dandeson83 02-21-12, 11:38 PM The Fargo, ND market got local news in widescreen SD a few days ago thanks to WDAY (ABC). As a result, the largest market with no local news in 16:9 has become #131 Chico-Redding, CA. On another note, according to their respective Wikipedia pages, WFXG (Fox), WJBF (ABC), and WAGT (NBC) - all in the Augusta, GA market - began broadcasting news in HD last fall. The CBS affiliate in the market had already been airing local news in HD for months. According to a story on the 5pm newscast tonight, WDAY has gone full HD. mbclev 02-22-12, 12:52 AM According to a story on the 5pm newscast tonight, WDAY has gone full HD.
