View Full Version : The "Attic Theater" construction begins
nosdude 02-14-06, 10:56 AM It's a joy reading through this forum, and have met a couple of fellow HT DIYs in the Collin county area. Stew, thx for allowing us in your home, and say hello to your lovely family. David.......again, "You are the man". I like to come back and see the finished HT. Many thanks to Chris Armbruster for his assistance with the seating area design.
My HT construction started during the Christmas holidays. I have an attic space that is 15ft by 21ft, with a very sloped cathedral ceiling. The outside walls are 5ft tall. See "original.jpg" file.
Despite the shape of the room, I still want a stage, boxed ceiling with crown moldings and rope lights.....and columns of course. So I ripped the ceiling and reframed it, as illustrated in revised.jpg.
The final room layout is shown in HTLayout.jpg I have also included some of the immediate construction pictures. More to come as I progress.
nosdude 02-14-06, 11:01 AM Additional pictures.
nosdude 02-14-06, 11:05 AM here is the room layout.
dc_pilgrim 02-14-06, 11:12 AM Is this a 9.1 layout? I have seen them mentioned from time to time, just never seen anyone install it.
Stew4msu 02-14-06, 11:12 AM Stew, thx for allowing us in your home, and say hello to your lovely family.
Anytime. Theater's looking great, keep us posted. One thing I might alter is the placement of your side speakers. I would probably move them forward a bit so that they're between the two rows (closer to the front row, actually).
a couple of thoughts from a newb to HT but not to construction/layout...
the entry door looks to be sharing some real estate with the ceiling as planned. she's going to be swinging in the sloped ceiling.
also it would appear that the aisles are going to have vey low clearance (headroom). this layout seems to scream for a center aisle layout.
$0.02
nosdude 02-14-06, 11:39 AM Thx Stew. dc_pilgrim, I wired for future 9.1......For now I'm just going to use it for 7.1
nosdude 03-14-06, 01:43 PM Construction is slow, but steady....
Stage construction is completed, the lower half of the columns are done, the top half that will follow the countour of the sloped ceiling is in glue-up stage.

Toxarch 03-14-06, 03:46 PM Kinda late now, but did you add any venting between the insulation and the roof decking? If not, you could end up with roof problems in the future. Without the venting, heat from your roof will just build up in the insulation under the decking and cook your roof shingles. It will really lower the life of your roof shingles. You will still be fine, but you will have to replace your shingles more often which means more cost from your pocket. The vents allow air to move up from the house eaves up to the attic and cool the roof down.
Other than that, everything looks pretty good. I have a similar shaped room that I am mostly done with. Just can't get the motivation to finish since the projector is up.
Stew4msu 03-14-06, 04:05 PM If I would have known you were going to build a theater that was a lot better than mine, I wouldn't have invited you over. :)
Looking good.
nosdude 03-20-06, 02:59 PM Thx guys.

Highside 03-29-06, 04:12 PM your room is coming along very nice.
Very similar to my room layout. I may be stealing some of your ideas. :D
Rob
Stew4msu 03-29-06, 04:16 PM Very nice. Reminds me of this one I found on the web:
http://www.fiorenzacustomwoodworking.com/hometheater.html
carmbruster 03-29-06, 06:41 PM Your project is coming along very nice. I like the big step on the curved stage and the recessed panel affect w/ applied mouldings on the riser wall, columns and soffit looks great. Keep the pics coming!
nosdude 04-07-06, 11:32 AM The ceiling design is completed..............finally

The insipiration is from the "Supervisor's Chambers" ceiling at the San Francisco City Hall.

Here is the template I built last night.

This is another reason why this room will probably take more than a year to complete.
Looking good. That will be a lot of work but should look really nice when you're done.
nosdude 04-10-06, 11:55 AM I built both ceiling skeletons over the weekend. Lot of work, but I can hardly wait to see the end-result.

Toxarch 04-10-06, 03:31 PM Wow, that ceiling is definitely going to be a lot of work. Just remember that the lights in that room are going to be off 99% of the time. I had to keep telling myself that while I was building. But it's still cool to have that in the room. Looks great so far.

Yeah, I thought about that, but HD sell some rope lights that are not as bright (in fact they look 50% dimmed). With the fact that the boxed ceiling is away from the screen, I hope to be able to still have it on while watching sports, even movies.
ICLKennyG 04-10-06, 05:05 PM I love this thread - I have a second floor atic space that is just screeming to be a HT - however because of vaults and other angular problems it's been dificult to figure out the optimal layout. This is a very cool design to deal with an odd and otherwise pretty useless space.
Mojo-TMH 04-13-06, 03:08 PM Hi nosdude,
Nice build! I especially like the columns and the way they follow up the ceiling. And after seeing your ceiling "skeletons" I know the ceiling will look great. And that's where my question comes in, how did you make the holes to screw the pieces of wood together? Was it a special tool or was it just a guide for regular drillbits (I noticed a DeWalt drill much like mine in one of the pics)? If a guide, is it adjustable or do you need to get different ones for different angles?
Keep up the good work and post lots of pics :)
v1rtu0s1ty 04-13-06, 03:37 PM DAMN! You've got a really gifted hands!!! It is very nice!!!
tony123 04-13-06, 04:10 PM Looks Great!
GPowers 04-13-06, 04:19 PM That is going to be some ceiling!

The holes are made using Pocket Hole Tools (http://www.kregtools.com) . As you can see in the following pictures.
Piece of wood inserted into the pocket hole tool

Hole is drilled using the drill supplied with the pocket hole tool
http://www.saa-web.com/images/DCP_0228_EX.jpg
Two pieces of cut-wood put together with a clamp, and yellow carpenters' glue ready to be screwed together.
The clamp is also supplied with the pocket hole tool.

Screw inserted and drilled using the long screw that is also supplied with the tool.

The pieces are glued and screwed together.

Let me know if you have additional questions.
Highside 06-05-06, 12:47 PM Any new updates? I'm still toying with a similar column design but not quite as fancy and tied in with some molding around the ceiling for rope lighting.
Since my bonus room was "finished" during the construction of our house and many things were not planned for a home theater (didn't find this website until after the house was completed), I now have to slightly back-track to get things situated right.
Inquiring minds want to know.
