scpete26 06-30-09, 11:02 PM I thought I might as well post pics of my new monster sub. It's a FI Q18 in ~26 cuft tuned to 15 hz with a 10" port. Powered by an ep2500 and an eQ.2 I didn't paint her bcuz she's always behind the black curtain and my wife was getting pretty sick of me spending all my time building the thing! so I just put her in the corner and I just take a peek at her every once in a while when the wife's not looking! haha.

Do you have any build threads on any of your speakers or sub?
synthesis08 08-10-09, 06:54 AM Thanks guys.
I posted the build threads quite long ago in local HT/Hi-Fi forum in Singapore. Here are some construction photos.

mjaudio 08-15-09, 11:47 AM Nice work Hypez,
Reminds me of older Kef reference models.
What are you using for the crossover and amps?
hypez604 08-15-09, 08:09 PM As an active crossover I am using a software on my PC (thuneau frequency allocator & phase arbitrator), which works through an external soundcard... a
slightly modded e-mu 1616m.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2453/3674077001_c37882bfc8.jpg
My current amps are two rotel 980bx's for the mids and highs, and a hafler p3000 is powering the subs.
In the future I am planning to build a pair of diy dual mono class a 200w aleph-x style amps. in the short run I am planning to get a couple of 500-1000w icepower or hypex class-d kits for the subs, they're hungry.
Some more about the speakers... the sub boxes have an inner skeleton made from plywood and the external shell is mdf, as you can see the photos front baffle is very thick. The mid and tweeter boxes are all plywood. All the drivers are flush mounted. All the binding posts are gold plated copper by Cardas. All the wires are coaxial by mogami as already mentioned. The subs and mids are stuffed with acoustica stuffing.

No. The vents are screwed to braces and joists with 6 screws each. The other items the WAF has on the walls rattle though. :)

From looking at this picture it looks like you only have 6" or less insulation in your attic. If where you live it stays around 70 degrees year around that is fine, but if you live where it gets cold or very hot you should add more insulation. The added insulation would pay for it's self and the IB subwoofers in a few years.

I know that in my attic there had been about 9" of insulation and last weekend I just finished blowing in an additional 8" on top of this. Of course I live in WI and it can get pretty cold here. I can feel the difference already even though it hasn't gotten below freezing yet. It's much more comfortable and only cost about $300. It should pay for itself in a couple of months and then I will write it off on taxes as well. :D:D
Is that a decoration or actually a "bass trap" in the upper corner?
Yes, that is a "bass trap" and there is one above the entertainment center and one behind each valance where the curtains are. I have a movable column trap that matches the wall that I place bellow the triangle when the WAF is not around. :D

It is actually closer to 7.5" since those are 2" x 8" joists. I am currently looking into improving the thermal properties up there. I am looking into radiant barriers or addition insulation. I would like to convert a large section of the space into an addition room. Be it a theater room or additional bedroom. I am just worried that with the Florida heat, it will be too much. :o
Does anyone know of speaker building shops in the New York City area where I can take my drawings? I am not good at cabinet building whatsoever!!! There used to be a shot on Jerricho Turnpike, but have closed recently.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a third floor like that and it is completely insulated and done in low e insulation. It works like a charm. shout back if you have any questions.
orbifold 11-30-09, 04:16 PM I've had these PE parts since 2006 but tooo many things get in the way of what we love, ya know? It got kind of late and I made the decision to hack this thing together and spray what I could before it was too cold. Just get the CC singing and bother with the finish-the-finishing next spring. So here is ET, that is what the family is calling it:
http://i802.photobucket.com/albums/yy308/orbifold/Glamshot.jpg
the top of the pylon has threaded inserts and the speaker is through bolted to it and actually sits on two little strips of isolation rubber on the pylon. Then the cable goes down through the pylon and there is a termination cut into the back of the unit with forstner bits and a chisel:

Can't argue with you on the look part, as that's personal preference... But perform better? Why? Many high end speakers have separate cabinets, JMLabs Utopia, Wilsons, latest Salk HT3, etc. There's actually some advantages to having separate boxes for the drivers.

The first time I saw a set Sonas Fabers was, oh I guess, about 12 years ago and they were like no other speaker I'd seen up to that point. I'll never forget how they looked, much less sounded.

jonlereux 02-08-10, 11:03 AM Awesome job on your speakers. I have always wanted to build a line source so I have to ask, How do these sound?
jonlereux 02-08-10, 11:14 AM I noticed a post that you have built some North Creek speakers including a center. I am interested in what they sound like. Any opinions? Are they worth the effort in you opinion? Any comparisons to anything you have heard in the past ?
I can comment on the North Creek Borealis - All Scan Speak driver version.
Very nice smooth sounding speaker. Gentle roll off on the bass, very good imaging.
Are they worth the cost over buying just the raw drivers? If you not exeperienced with crossover design, or box design then yes, do it.
nichol1997 02-14-10, 03:41 PM Just thought I would share my recently completed entertainment center. I am guessing I spent some 300 hours or more constructing it. Constructed with solid and plywood red oak (screws, glue, and dowels were used). I created a Sketchup model to confirm proportions before I started constructing it. The top three panels flip-up and recess into the unit, the bottom two panels are held in place using hidden neodymium magnets.
It measures:
8 feet wide
28 inches deep
36.5 inches tall
Finish:
Lightly sanded with 150 grit sandpaper
2 coats Constatine's Red Mahogany Grain Filler
1 coat of 1:1 mix of Minwax Sedona Red and Red Mahogany oil based stain
1 coat of General Finishes Red Mahogany oil based stain
10 coats of Minwax Satin Wipe-on Poly
Note that the three top panels were finished a little different from everything else. Transtint Red Mahogany dye was used after sanding and grain filler was applied. The remaining steps are the same as above.
Speakers:
(5) of Zaph's BAMTM
(4) Mach 5 Audio MJ-18
(2) LLT Ascendant Audio Avalanche 18s (sonotubes)
To get a sense of size of the unit, the television is a 50" plasma and the sonotubes are 28" in diameter and 7 feet tall.

Thanks for the compliment.
The door in front of the center channel is 1/4" plywood so I must open it when watching movies.
I actually leave all three of the top doors open anytime I have the system on as it allows heat to escape from the Crown amp and Yamaha receiver.
The bottom two doors I leave in place most of the time as they are acoustically transparent.

You better get busy and build some main speakers as well.:) I feel insignificant now, I've had some Fostex bookshelves in the planning stages for for so long, about 1 1/2 years, I just put the drivers on Ebay.
rdooski3 03-03-10, 04:37 PM Not bad for $50(for speakers, had everything else)and a couple hours of work.

What drivers are those and how do they sound?
What drivers are those and how do they sound?
I'm not sure of the exact driver, but I am guessing on eof the Peerless lines. Maybe these.. http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=299-250
Sean-ryu 03-08-10, 05:35 AM Open baffle stereo home theatre. A somewhat unique design of popular combinations of drivers (alpha 15s, Visaton B200, Neo3 PDR). 3-way active driven by class D amps.
Having put my money into a budget high end stereo system, I would never go back to surround sound unless I had some serious coin.
Sean-ryu 03-08-10, 05:39 AM Here is the passive line level crossover (PLLXO), also awaiting a box. It is connected to three stereo power amps. PLLXO's do not see much mention in the forums I visit but have huge potential when done right!
I think that I have enough firepower.

I love that zebrawood laminate. Could you provide a link to where it was purcahsed?

I couldn't be more happy with the finish its provided.

I can see why. The level of gloss with that grain pattern is jaw dropping.
mziegler 03-18-10, 01:34 PM Very good looking cabinets. At first I was puzzled they were so heavy, then I saw how large they are. They seem quite larger then most sealed bookshelves I have seen (or are they even bookshelves?). Do you have any insights into the design?

They are oversized bookshelves, but were originally designed to be much smaller. The dimensions just kept getting bigger and bigger after me and an audiophile friend just kept tweaking the design and adding different drivers. The crossover was built by madisound based on the drivers we chose. Being the first DIY speaker we thought we would eliminate as many variables as possible that could go wrong. I wished I would have gotten into DIY speakers many years ago because there is no way we could have purchased a speaker of this caliber for $700. We actually threw away the first so called correct dimension cabinet and just built what we thought would look good, but still be in the "golden ratio" ballpark.
just found this thread.
real excellent builds here
nichol1997, do you have a build thread anywhere? I'd like to see how you put all that together and your sonotubes.
I take it the sub array below your amps is for midbass punch and the sonotubes are for the 'real' low end? they look spectacular.
If you say so.

Thanks for the compliment.
The only build thread that I have is for the Mach 5 Audio midbass array (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=902901&highlight=). They are in 4 separate enclosures beneath the entertainment center.
The sonotubes that I made are essentially the same as Sherv's Phase 1 build of his Two Towers. Details can be found here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=756408&highlight=.
I recently moved and have not gone to the trouble of hooking the midbass enclosures up yet so they are sitting dormant. But before I moved, I had the Avalanche sonotubes playing the low stuff and crossed around 40 Hertz. The Mach 5 midbass enclosures played 40 to 100 Hertz.
Here is my first build, a small set of bookshelves with TB W4-1320 single drivers. They are cherry stained oak veneer over mdf with 6 coats of semi gloss Tung Oil.
odysseybmx414 04-13-10, 08:29 PM First build dont laugh. (You can if you really want to)
I am glad to start to be a part of this forum. I am an electronics repair technician, and a diy audio hobbyist. I listen to an amp that was built by me, and I usually use a 15" powered, ported down-firing subwoofer made by BIC America. This subwoofer in this thread is going in my car, getting maybe 300 Watts put to it. (300W in car audio terms, so probably closer to 100). The driver is an "Apex Jr Super 8"@ from hxxp://www.apexjr.com. The box is 0.442 ft^3 with a small amount of bracing. Right now I have it hooked up to the plate amp from the 15, which is I am pretty sure 375 Watts RMS. Its amazing how such a small sub can go this low (around 25Hz).
I am not very experienced with wood working either. I used this stuff called PL Fix. It is a wood filler used to fix holes and what not. I counter-sunk the screws that held the pieces together while the glue dried, and filled the holes with the stuff. Come to find out, it doesn't stain the same color or rate as the wood does. No idea what I'm going to do now. Veneer?
I apologize for the low quality pics.
Aaron.
That is a really sweet finish on the speakers. I saw a similar finish on a Mazda 6 wood trim.

That finish is downright gorgeous, and I'd love to do that to my speakers... However, I can't find that design anywhere, even on Wilsonart's website. :o
The closest I can find is this one at Lowe's: Asian Night Laminate (http://www.lowes.com/pd_136252-466-7949-18-48X096-000_4294856947+4294833309_?productId=3063453&Ntt=laminate&Ntk=i_products&pl=1¤tURL=/pl_Wilsonart_4294856947%204294833309__s?pageNumber=1$Ntt=lam inate$currentPage=12$totalPages=12), which isn't nearly as cool as yours.
Do you have a link to where I'd most likely find it? It looks reeeeeally good.

I called Home Depot and they can get it. They don't have it in stock, but can order it in and have it shipped to the store within 5-7 days. I have the color number at home if it isn't mentioned above.
Ah, okay. I'll go in and look at the ones they have in-store, then if they don't have any I like I can ask them to order the Zebrawood one in.
Thanks for the info deewan!
Jim Hef 04-28-10, 03:34 PM ...However, I can't find that design anywhere, even on Wilsonart's website....
This company, Laminart, has excellent plastic laminates and real wood veneer laminate panels. Highest quality in the industry, although I'm not sure if any are offered with the super gloss finish:
http://www.laminart.com/us/products-samples/collections/premium-wood-prints-4.html
I should also add that using "vertical grade" laminates will give you a less noticeable line at any corners due to the thinner material. A dark color grain will hide the phenolic line better, as in the example of the zebrawood cladding.

The outside of the speaker is curly maple and the inside is bubinga. They are both types of veneer. I purchased the raw wood veneer off of ebay. I bought remnants, you can really get those cheap.

Each speaker uses one 15” performance grade Silver Iris coaxial unit and one 15" Augie bass driver. The baffles are constructed from 1 ¼” thick solid European beech and are built up on the edges for a total thickness of 2 ½”. The drivers are mounted on Baltic birch plywood and bolted to the baffles with dense foam in between to decouple the drivers from the baffle. The bases are 1 ½’ thick solid ash painted black. The crossovers are built with premium parts, Obbligato caps, Alpha Core inductors, and Dale and Kiwame resistors. They are wired with Tara Labs cable. I use Apex Sr. plate amps with excellent results. The woodwork was done by a friend of mine who is a furniture maker and took photos of his progress.

Creative Sound Solutions FR125S + Dayton ND20
Aperiodic woofer alignment based on a design on another forum, originally intended for an application with the FR running, umm full range. Sort of a fortunate experiment with the rest, with the tweeter inset as it is a textbook second order Linkwitz-Riley tilts the primary lobe slightly in the direction of the woofer such that sitting them upside-down on my desk puts me right in the sweet spot. I figured I could play with stands if needed, and I did add a short pair later. Using them nearfield meant I didn't need to mess around with baffle step compensation and I just sort of took my chances with the tweeter's response on these particular baffles. I have no measurement gear ATM and couldn't design a crossover to save my life anyway, but through sheer luck they actually sound pretty good.
Holes that form the aperiodic port, covered with open-cell foam on the inside:
http://antisuck.com/pics/public/monitors-box1.jpg
The paint is just rattle-can textured Rustoleum, the veneer is some paper backed Parts Express stuff that I applied with wood glue + iron. The edges are far from perfect but not too bad I think for my first attempt at veneering.
Currently running them full-range supplemented by an old Velodyne CHT (don't laugh) 8" sub I grabbed at a pawn shop. Sharp eyed gear-hounds may wonder, that's an Onkyo A-905X integrated amplifier on the lower left and an E-Mu/Creative Tracker Pre on the upper right doing duty as the audio interface and headphone pre. I tend to leave my phones plugged in all the time and just turn on the Onkyo when I'll be using the speakers.
Main speakers and subs to come, hopefully this summer or fall. Following a few mains designs still in development here and there, and I'm pretty sure a dual-opposed sealed AV15H (thanks pbc!) is a good fit for my needs and my room.

westsounds 06-12-10, 10:40 AM Hi there
I was just admiring this speaker it looks very professional. I was just wondering if you or anyone here could tell me why use foam inside your speaker other than the other Dacron filler. I am building a subwoofer my self and I am wondering which would be best to use inside. I have looked in my stereo speakers as they are one of the best sounding speakers ive ever heard (ProAc tabllette reference 8 signtures) and these have foam all around like these apart from just the rear which has the fleecy white Dacron.
Any ideas advice would be great thanks.

From my experience, patience is the more important one of the two when you're first learning. ^_^
BTW, here's a question for all you veneer gurus out there. I had put veneer softner on my veneer but when I went to iron it on (Heat activated glue method) it wrinkled up like crazy. I had waited a little over a day after applying the softner, and it didn't look wet anymore, but the iron made the moisture reappear instantly. I had a difficult time getting it flat due to the veneer softner wrinkling.
Any guesses on where I went wrong with that one?

ProblemHouston 07-08-10, 11:51 AM Hey guys I am building an entertainment center and want to know what I should use to get a nice mirror like black finish for the top. The top is 3/4 MDF that has been sprayed with rattle can primer thus far. Any suggestions on getting a deep shine out of it?

This question would be best asked in a new thread in the DIY section or there are plenty of established threads asking the same question, you might want to do a search. Doing a mirror finish is one of the toughest jobs in all of DIY so it would take up a lot of space in this gallery section.

Poorboy_Mike 07-20-10, 08:09 PM BTW, here's a question for all you veneer gurus out there.
When I used raw walnut veneer, I sprayed each sheet until it was damp, then went over it with an iron and a cotton cloth to "pre-heat" the veneer and dry it out a little. I immediatly rolled the heat lock glue on the sheet and let it dry for an hour or so. When I was ready to do a side, I placed the sheet on the box, sprayed it lightly with the veneer softener, and ironed it on. Seemed to work quite well, although it did curl up a little when I hit it with the iron. Work from the center out and you shouldn't have any problems.
Great looking speakers by the way.

See, right there is one error I made, I worked the veneer from one side to the other, not from the center.
Great looking speakers by the way.
Thank you sir!
young13 08-30-10, 12:17 PM Just finished this last week. 15" LMS-R powered by one channel of a Marathon MA-5050. Internal volume is around 90 liters net stuffed with 3 lbs. of Acousta-Stuf. Ended up with 28 layers of 11 ply China birch from Lowe's. I should have spent the extra $20 a sheet and got the 13 ply Baltic birch from Menards. From my experience, the Lowe's stuff has more voids and uneven plies than the Menards. Next time. Maple veneer on the top and bottom and I made the trim ring out of 3/4 maple with a 3/8 roundover on the outside and a 1/4 roundover on the inside. Finished with seven coats of Benjamin Moore Benwood Stays Clear acrylic poly, machine polished with Behlen Buffer's Polish, and hand rubbed with Renaissance wax. All in it took roughly six weeks to finish but it was worth it. I figured out a few things along the way to reduce sanding and finishing time when I do the next one. Thanks for looking.

mjaudio 08-30-10, 12:54 PM Very very nice Young13.
Do you happen to have a build thread? I would love to ask some questions but in this thread it is not appropriate.

Thank you.
No, I do not have a build thread. I stay home with my 2, 4, and 6 year olds and the free time I do have was mostly spent building. I do plan on documenting the next build though. And feel free to PM me with any questions you may have.

Very nice, I really like that baffle and how it covers the reccessed driver. I have been thinking about doing something like that with my LMS build. I also have the same amp....I can not wait to hear it all, my build with be 3.0 cuft.
btw, you should really put that post in its own threads so others can ask questions and see it in the main DIY section. Measurements would be awesome too!!
Congrats on the kids too!! I have a 16 month and 3.5 year old :D

Ya, I'm going to write up a post today in the main section with more pics of the finished enclosure and some tips on what I would do differently.
Wow ... those look fantastic! Hope you took lots of pics and can setup a "post" build thread soon!!
Those Paradigm feet sure are popular! ;)

Wow.
Good work.
DougSmith 09-10-10, 05:37 PM Thanks. I actually built the sub amps as well using a pair of 2 x 250 modules from Class D Audio. They run cool and quiet (no fans) and provide 4 channels of power at 125W into 8ohms or 250W into 4ohms - or they can be run bridged to provide 2 channels at 500W into 8 ohms. Great little amps.

rustyhook 09-17-10, 02:08 PM Very, very nice jobs.....all of you
hemifamily 09-23-10, 12:56 PM seem to have had enough of my 901 series VI and ready to venture out to something else. so far i want to either build a legacy baffle design or helix tower design. already have 8- eminence lab-15 subs, (10) 6.5 mid-woofers, 2 as extras, tang band 75-1558se 3" textile domes and tang band rt-1516sa ribbon tweeters. after everything i could read on both ive changed a few things on driver choices for my tastes ie, love a nice big dome midrange sound as in PMC and ATC studio monitors. baffle choices so far are using a slab of soapstone where the factory can make all the cuts that i want as long as they have specs. this would probably be the easiest build. the legacy whispers from reading seem to have a wider and more open sound but have a less solid bass response from reading reviews. the helix design using multi layered mdf and so called truck bed rhino lining adhesive inside, different driver setups, powered sub etc. would probably be a monumental task to build. so lets just assume a baffle design is in order. so here are my questions and concerns hopefully to be answered. the xilica xp-4080 is the loudspeaker processor that the legacys use, all xlr in/outs (balanced). currently using sherwood/newcastle P-965 pre/processor. this does not have xlr outs and rca output is only 1v. currently have emotiva xpa-5 and would love to use some xpa-1 mono blocks at least to drive all the subs, but have read a few clipping scenerios and am now not sure of xpa-1s. how and what is the best way to boost voltage output of p-965 and convert input to xlr to go into xilica processor. most pro/amps crown, crest, qsc etc can give great bang for the buck but have at least 1.25 and up voltage input sensitivities. is this what a rca/xlr buck booster is for? next question is freq. curve on drivers. lets say the 6.5 mid/woofers in the specs are 45hz to 10000 hz. klipsch has these drivers in the thx KL-650 speakers crossed at 1400hz with a horn to do the rest. i guess i trust klipsch in knowing this is probably best crossover freq. for that speaker and that application. lets say a woofer has a freq spec from 100hz to 2500hz but you find speaker mfg. not using the full range or not even close to the full range that driver can do. if 2500hz is the end of its upper range, and a mfg drops it off at 500hz what am i missing,if it can do a range in the specs much more then that why dont they use the full range. my subs are spec'd from 20hz to 125 hz. but on their graph they dip a little at 125 and go out to 700hz before they fall apart. i guess i just want to know what type of ranges i can play with on these subs. so subs are (8) lab 15 at 20-125hz, midwoofers are 45-10K, 3" domemidrange are 260-8k and ribbons are 2k-40k. those are the drivers so far and some of my long winded questions. subs are 600w rms each, midwoofers are 40rms each and no wattage specs for dome and ribbon in front of me. any problems someone thinks of or amp options would be great.
I couldn't think of anywhere else to introduce myself so, here we go. A couple things I've built:

Steampunk aesthetic, using copper/bronze/steel, green felt baffle facing, JSD 8 ohm 5.25" coaxial drivers. Hidden chamber vented alignment, whatever that's called in the serious engineering world. I'm not serious. :D Everything's scrap, I think I have 20 bucks in actual purchased parts (nails, glue, paint, etc) I call them "Earl Grey"

I call these "Takenobu" as I found myself listening to Nick Ogawa a lot while tuning them. 4" MTX automotive drivers from a buddy's car, 3" Poop Pipe Port® and some sexy fishnet material held away from the drivers with drawer pulls. I may have spent upwards of $40 on this pair.
Oh, and here's some sillyness I built for work a few months ago

And here's what I look like in a sombrero (http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/4626/sombrero.jpg)
So.. uhh.. I don't really take this hobby seriously, I take fun seriously and then sometimes build speakers when I'm bored. I've been reading several of the very talented & meticulous builds on here for quite a while & figured it's time to join in case I ever want to comment or ask so.. howdy. Or whatever :D

Wow! Did you make that center, and if so do you have plans or a list of drivers you used? In fact I would love to know more about your whole setup if you don't mind. Thanks. Also did you make the stand for the center and where did you get the feet for your mains at? All I can find are pointy generic ones. One last question, what is going on with the wiring for the mains, are they by amped?
Very nice!
Never-mind, I read your sig. You have some very nice speakers and are very good.

Sorry, I just now saw your post. I believe you have the speakers designs now thanks to geoffstgermaine.
I designed and built the stand for my center channel. It's just a simple mdf design covered in veneer and paint. The speaker feet are from Parts Express, but have been discontinued. And yes, the main speakers are bi-amped.

Theresa 03-05-11, 05:31 AM Very nice speakers. I love that people can take such a seemingly simple thing and make it sing with beautiful music beautifully reproduced. Its almost an obsession once the DIY speaker bug bites. I know most here are woodworkers but due to the lack of skill in that area I still enjoy it by buying enclosures ready made or custom made and putting great drivers into them. Sadly I don't enjoy cheap drivers and have a taste for drivers I cannot easily afford, so building speakers isn't just about saving money for me it's about getting the best sound that I can
.
jamesbos 03-27-11, 08:55 AM this is just a small example of my work, I am in the process of rebuilding all of my full range planars (down to 20Hz).About 20 pairs or there abouts. Have been building and re-designing over the last 20 years. Neo magnets peaked my interest, because the reduction in size and weight. From 7' monsters down to 60 x 40 cms. From 40 kilos down to5 kilos. I hope this gives you ideas for your own builds:cool:

jamesbos 03-27-11, 09:24 AM A few more
The first 2 I use for sub woofers
tdawson 03-29-11, 11:26 AM I've attached a picture of my HT speakers, of which I currently have six built and two more to go. They're quasi-line arrays using nine 3.5" full range drivers per speaker (these are the $8.00 closeout Aurasound copies that Parts Express was selling recently). The enclosures are basically a 5" CPVC pipe and the bases are solid walnut. Even though nine identical Aurasound type drivers are used, there is a frequency shaping network/xover also in each enclosure. The outer six drivers are rolled off to compensate for baffle step, and only the center driver handles HF info above about 5khz (which is accordingly boosted to match the lower frequency efficiency). So these speakers work more like vertically elongated point sources than conventional line arrays.
Due to the addition of activated charcoal in the enclosure and a "Vas reducing" polypropylene coupling capacitor at the input (600uF), my Audyssey MultEQ system measures these as responding down to 40-50 hz in my HT environment without any external EQ, no mean feat for an array of 3.5 inch drivers in a non-ported enclosure. And with the Audyssey EQ applied, it sounds like they make it down to near 20hz flat without any subwoofer in the system.
I suspect this approach has an inherent advantage over separate subwoofers because the bass for each channel originates at the same location as all the higher frequencies, hence there should be no imaging or delay problems caused by subwoofers that are located in only one or two places.
I've found that if I point the side channels at the walls, they effectively act as bipoles. MultEQ does a pretty good job of equalizing out the resulting response aberrations.
So, these speakers have exceeded my expectations for them. They can be placed almost anywhere without a stand, are not very obtrusive, work as either conventional direct radiators or bipoles, basically cover the whole 20 hz-20 Khz range when used with MultEQ, are very articulate and natural sounding and have decent dynamic range due to having 9 3 1/2 drivers per each with a healthy 4mm Xmax. Plus, I made them for a total material cost per speaker of about $150.00. Eventually I will get around to making perforated metal grilles to protect the speaker cones.
Stinky Dragon 03-29-11, 11:51 AM Just finished up a pair of Overnight Sensations. It was my first DIY speaker project and I thought it turned out fairly well. I made them a little taller and less deep so they wouldn't stick out too far on my desk, and moved the port to the front so I could put them directly against the wall.

Thanks, I wouldn't have thought they were reflex. If you could, I am interested in driver mfrs/models etc. That response is phenomenally flat...but at 50db? Hell, that's barely above the noise floor in my media room. With 3 custom PCs(w/fans), pro amps, kitchen fridge etc, there are quieter areas of our home:) What would you estimate the resulting sensitivity to be?
Does that amp possess dsp signal shaping/manipulation? I'm interested because what you have there is very similar to one of my shelved designs, however mine was 2.5 way...rolling off one LF driver at the top end. How would you characterize the sound?
Thanks

The woofer are Beyma 8G40.
The sens. of the speaker is 101,5db without room gain.
Mine is a dedicated room and is abolutely silent (no fan!)
The amp have on board a powerfull DSP with xover, delay, gain and 16PEQ per channel.
The plate amp have 500w for woofer and 250w for tweeter on 4ohm.

In my opinion the speaker sound great, with a very open sound, the voice are very good, always present and balanced.
With HT music they make the best, you know the "live" feeling?
Last but not least this center channel play loud, very loud. (as the front speakers :D)
Sorry for my bad english (I'm italian), but I think you understand.

Ok I may be out of my element here, but I would like to make a pair of my own subs. I do a lot of woodworking and "making" the cabinet is the least of my concerns. Besides I want my cabinets in cherry and there are not too many offerings in that wood.
I want to use a pair of the TC 5100's but what I don't know is how to design a cabinet for optimal performance. Just how does one get started in the design stage. I don't really want to do a lot of trial and error stuff as I don't have a lot of time on my hands, so maybe building is out of the question. I've seen books on "speaker design" (i.e. "Designing, Building, and Testing Your Own Speaker Systems" by David Weems) software like Bass Box Pro, but after awhile it all becomes a blur.
So like my opening statement says, am I out of my element here?

I want to use a pair of the TC 5100's but what I don't know is how to design a cabinet for optimal performance. Just how does one get started in the design stage. I don't really want to do a lot of trial and error stuff as I don't have a lot of time on my hands, so maybe building is out of the question. I've seen books on "speaker design" (i.e. "Designing, Building, and Testing Your Own Speaker Systems" by David Weems) software like Bass Box Pro, but after awhile it all becomes a blur.
So like my opening statement says, am I out of my element here?

xander_crews 06-29-11, 02:27 PM Just finished up a pair of Overnight Sensations. It was my first DIY speaker project and I thought it turned out fairly well. I made them a little taller and less deep so they wouldn't stick out too far on my desk, and moved the port to the front so I could put them directly against the wall.

those look pretty good especially for your first time

~105db+ at listening position (126db at the horn opening!) with ~30watts. Fills my whole room (and house) with nice low bass down to 19hz. Great for movies and such but is still musical enough for well music. Very low distortion compared to my previous ported enclosure.
Didn't really bother making it pretty since it is nicely hidden away from sight.

I think the previous poster has no idea what tapped horns are capable of. A properly designed 12" TH sub can have the output or more of a 18" normal sub within it's intended range.
Just finished my first DIY build. It is an sdx15 with an oaudio 500w plate amp in a sealed and stuffed 3.75 cu.ft. box. The wood is .75" mdf with cherry veneer on one side and douglas fir on the other (I used the cherry side). The 1/4 round is maple. I used minwax "gunstock" stain and 3 coats of semi gloss poly. I am into this complete build for under $500 and I am very happy with how it turned out.

WOW, I was just looking at your building skills, and I'm floored! AW-MAZING:eek: Super cool choice of building materials. I would love to hear how they sound, or what other spears do they remind you of. Very talented.

baniels 08-05-11, 12:11 PM Thanks a lot. It was a fun build. I expect I'll be doing a matching 4CC (http://www.clearwaveloudspeaker.com/Dynamic/4CC.html) sooner or later.
I think they sound fantastic. I find myself trying to manipulate my schedule to find more time to listen to them. I really haven't listened to enough commercial speakers to be able to make any comparisons like that.
It's only been a few weeks, and they "seem" like they're still getting better, but it's hard to tell if they're fully broken in or not. I'll probably wait a few more weeks and then get out the measurement tools for an objective and subjective review of the sound.

Pre veneered mdf? nice. More people should go for that, instead of trying to stain their birch plywood (which doesnt come close to a veneered finish)

Tasteful choice of granite. Awesome build! They must weigh a ton.

Tieftoener 09-18-11, 10:34 AM http://gallery.avsforum.com/data/507/TV_Stand_Sub.jpg
This is a 4th order isobaric sub with 2 18" Peavey Black Widow drivers. 3/4" Particleboard veneered with Poplar veneer and a 1/2" Poplar surface with glass inlay. Port (not shown) is on the wall side.
I'm impressed that the CRT doesn't have a warped picture from the sub magnet! Did you use any shielding?
This is my first attempt at building a subwoofer. It has a 3/4” MDF carcass (basically a 14” inside dimension sealed cube) w/ oak plywood rail/style overlays and a 1/4” plywood flat panel fitted into rabbits on the rails/styles. The panels/overlays/etc are all glued in place to prevent rattling. Cove moulding makes up the corners and panel edges. Finish is cherry stain w/ 3 coats of semigloss poly. The box itself was build almost entirely out of scraps I had lying around the garage, and cost less then $15 to build.
The speaker is a Rockford-Fosgate 12” 4ohm unit I pickedup on a (cheap) whim at a going out of buisness sale in town a while back. The amp is an Apex Senior. The spikes are a little short and will need to be extended to be used on a carpeted surface, but for a hard surface they are adequate. I will be building some small extensions for them shortly.
The appearance is ok, but the sound of the unit has actually been a pleasant suprise thus far, especially given the cost to put it together.
baniels 09-24-11, 07:46 PM The appearance is ok, but the sound of the unit has actually been a pleasant suprise thus far, especially given the cost to put it together.
I don't know, I think the appearance is better than "ok". Really well done, it looks like to me. Nice work. Build pictures available somewhere?
Well, not really. Didn't even think about doing that. Sorry.
AddictedtoHT 09-25-11, 02:09 AM Figured I'd post up some pictures of my Ruination 2.5 way speakers. They've been built for awhile now but I figured I'd add them to the gallery thread here to share with the AVS forum since I just realized gallery thread was here.
The cabs are re-purposed Unisound AU265 towers that were sold on thing fling for $150.00 with a new baffle attached. The drivers are Fountek FW168 woofers with Vifa DX25 tweeters. The build cost after selling off the unisound drivers was around $400.00.
Take it easy

I completed a cabinet overhaul of my dynamics. Changed from the standard square cabinets to something a little more unique. A quick summary. Curved cabinets made using 5-layers of a special order bendy birch plywood. CNC'ed internal bracing. Cabinet bases (feet) also CNC'ed and painted using a special chrome paint. Cabinets painted rat rod black (automotive grade matte black) and silver pinstripes. And now, the pictures.

And the matching center channel. I have not decided yet if I will put matching pinstripes on the CC. I'm guessing I will. And for the record, the sub cabinets are not finished. They will be built into a center channel speaker stand and made to look like a piece of furniture.

Hughbert 10-21-11, 03:00 PM New to the forum so i dont know if i have posted the images right but this is a subwoofer project i have under taken. It is a big section of maple that i found and have been hollowing out with a small chisel for about 4week, i decided it was takeing far to long a chose to light a fire in the middle of it, that got me very far down with little effort, once the plate amp arrives for the back i should be done after filling in the cracks and a lot of polish or oil...
Hughbert 10-21-11, 03:05 PM My first ever speaker project that was funded for me for my 18th birthday. Went pretty well but failed on the vynil as it unsticks at the sides, sound amazing though! My brother is an artist so ill just get him to paint all my future projects.

Cheezit,
Beautiful build!
You have it the correct way. Not sure how close you have it to the wall though. I know that for the THT it's best to have the mouth about 18" away from the wall. Check with Mike or even Bill Fitzmaurice for details.

mjaudio 02-02-12, 01:31 PM Those look really industrial Vinculum, very cool.
Vinculum 02-02-12, 08:43 PM Thanks guys. I was going for the industrial look! They hide behind a screen, so you really don't see them.
Copyright Cubed 02-07-12, 01:40 PM This is my my 4.3 cubic foot vented enclosure I made for the 12 inch RE Audio SE-x and a 240 watt Dayton plate amp. Not exactly pretty to look at, but this is my first time doing any sort of finish on an enclosure, so it's to be expected. I had more pictures, but I seem to have deleted them, this is all I have left. These were all taken with my phone, so excuse the blurriness.

This is the internal bracing. Made from 3/4 inch MDF. The baffles were made from 2 3/4 inch boards glued together to make 1.5 inch baffles. With the exception of the bracing (I cut those out myself) all the wood was cut to precise measurements at the lumber yard for no extra charge.
http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o508/X_296/IMG_20120207_134618.jpg
Don't bash the wallpaper, lol. It's a rental house and we aren't allowed to change it.
The finished enclosure. I told you it wasn't pretty. There is some damping material on the rear baffle. The port is tuned to 29hz. It also has inch and a half toe spikes.
http://i1145.photobucket.com/albums/o508/X_296/IMG_20120207_134845.jpg
The amp is mounted on the rear of the enclosure. It is receiving an amplified signal from my Kenwood M2a.
All together, this project cost me somewhere around $400. I'm not sure exactly, I'd have to dig up my receipts to get the exact cost. But it was somewhere in that region.

SVonhof 02-17-12, 11:02 PM ninetalesnwf, there are simple photo editing software or (even using Photobucket) to resize your images. Makes it much more user friendly on forums. I generally never post anything on a forum that is wider than 1000 pixels.
ninetalesnwf 02-18-12, 02:21 AM fixing the size problem now, sorry about that.
Bit rushed to get out the door, didnt look after posting :)
will have to wait till i get home, im synced into my cell phone for internet :) Bit slower haha
inyouratmosphere 02-23-12, 01:06 PM These are amazing. I had no idea making speakers from scratch could be added to the ever growing list of DIY projects! Not only that, but these speakers (at least by appearance) look legit! They look like something you would have to buy from a fancy store. Plus I'm sure the effect they have in the room make it so worth it.
Socketman 02-26-12, 12:54 PM Im new to this section of the forum though i have come over a few times to look at the diy projects which i really find interesting . There are some amazing home built speakers here. I myself dont have a woodshop to speak of but did manage to build myself a center channel. Most of the work was done at the shop where i work and the rest on the kitchen table.Just beforre christmas I bought myself some floor standers and they came with the wrong drivers, the manufacturer sent out new drivers and let me keep the old ones. With all these on hand i decided to build a new center channel. I used REW and X-over 3 to design the crossover . I am still waiting on my veneer to show up but thought i would share what i have done so far.

Theresa 03-02-12, 06:02 AM Just a tip, the tweeter should be mounted as close as possible to the midrange/midbass.
Most of mine:
The pair of desktop speakers I built for my brother, drivers are the 5" concave woofer and Nuance tweeter (Both PE buyouts).
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/4092/dsc2547960.jpg
A very inexpensive pair using the sony 5.25" and Nuance tweeter (More PE buyouts).
http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/4250/dsc2584sm.jpg
Some small bookshelfs using the Aura NS6 and a 3/4" softdome Neo buyout from a while back.
http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/4691/dsc2586sm.jpg
MTM with M&K buyout woofers and Dayton DC28.
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/1285/dsc2589sm.jpg
Another 2-way bookshelf using a Bravox 6.5" buyout and Dayton DC28.
http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/2169/dsc2592sm.jpg
My LCR, built two of them with the Klipsch buyouts first then went to make a center and the klipsch's were sold out so I used some peerless buyouts that modeled very close in the same enclosure.
Selenium DH200E CD's (does ok but not the best) on the Dayton waveguide.
http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/8610/dsc2599sm.jpg
Folded Horn's with Dayton 8" DVC on left. On the right Dayton DCS380 in 8cuft tuned to 18hz under the white sub which is an ACI SV10 in a 2cuft 20hz tune.
next is the Bravox buyout sub 12ohm in the 38hz TH designed by Volvotreter. On the right is the pair of bass bins with 15" Alnico woofers made by H.H. Scott that I found at a Thrift store for $9.

They can really fill a room even without any sound. :D
^You got it bad! Awesome builds!:)
mjaudio 03-08-12, 06:38 PM Wow, what a collection and very well built.
