Thanks... ctviggen 11-08-06, 08:22 AM Read the fine print !! I dont think you can find a brand new h710 for close to the same price as an AX100. No, you can. I can send you the links. ctviggen 11-08-06, 08:23 AM In fact I found one site where a new but open box Samsung is BENEATH the price of the AX-100. rawise 11-08-06, 08:25 AM ex-airforce - If you don't mind, could you report the build date and number of hours? Just curious, as I have a FEB06 unit with ~84 hrs and no problems yet... Thanks. scutfargas 11-08-06, 09:39 AM My H710 is death! I bought from Jason AV Science. Where should I send the unit to repair? Thanks... Call Jason and he will help you. I had the Samsung and Jason took care of me when mine died. I replaced mine with a different brand but I'm sure he can take care of you if you want to go back with the Sammy......good luck!!! I purchased my H710 new, but open box and it definately was not a brand new projector. Jon V 11-08-06, 11:20 AM "In fact I found one site where a new but open box Samsung is BENEATH the price of the AX-100. " 'New but open box' can mean anything on the internet. I find it hard to believe, with the hundreds of posts about problems with this projector, that anyone would consider buying it with anything less than a full warranty from an authorized dealer. i returned my dead Feb 06 unit yesterday and bought a different brand from AVS. The Sammy was a great Pj and a terrific value while it lasted - the key words being while it lasted. If these are refurbs being offered at low prices and short warranties, be sure you like the way it looks hanging from your ceiling as a decoration - that's all it may do after a few months. Caveat Emptor! I agree that it is a huge gamble to buy a refurb unit but I have done it in the past and have had great luck. In alot of cases like this where the projector has some commonly known problems these refurb units may have gotten a simple fix and sent back on the market in a more reliable condition than when it was new. I personaly did a little haggling and got my h710 for hundreds less than what I would have paid for a Panny AX100. The projector comes with a one year warranty as opposed to the two year manufacturers warranty. I gambled and so far so good. The picture quality is as good as any DLP I have ever demoed. But dont look at this as an endorsement to buy a refurb unit. I have done it and I know the risk. The unit I bought was deceptively marketed to make you believe it was a new unit and I knew that it wasnt new but the price was too good to ignore. Given that I was upgrading from a Dwin Transvision #1, maybe anything would have lookded good from such an old technology. My screen is a 110" Stewart Greyhawk. In any event, as I like to do things myself (but I'm definitely a relative novice at this), I was hoping some of you experts here could help me out. The accompanying Manual really sucks in explaining things. Here are my questions: 1. If I want to tweak this PJ to get the maximum out of it, what software would you recommend I get. I have a 4 year old copy of Kane's Video Essentials, but I'm sure there are lots of better things out there now. Recommendations? Is this what I use to adjust Gamma, too? 2. Can I add a high end DVD player and bypass the processor in this PJ and instead use the video processor in the player? Is that what the "Overscan" setting is for? 3. I'm running a Comcast HD tuner into the PJ using the HDMI output of the tuner into the DVI input of the PJ. But there are two settings on it I'm confused about: a. DVI/YPbPr - Options are 1080i, 720p, 480i and 480p. I've been using 1080i. Is that correct. My only complaint with this PJ is that standard definition TV (both network and cable channels) seems a little fuzzy (and I know it will never look anything like HD but I recall it looking better on my Dwin) and I'm just wondering if I'm doing everything to maximize the resolution. Does this projector have a good video processor for doing this or would it be worth it to buy and add an outboard processor? b. 4:3 Override - Choices are 480i an d480p and stretch. Which should I pick? 4. When, if ever, should I use the DNIe setting? 5. I sometimes see "jaggies" in HD format. What should I be adjusting to correct that? 6. Anything else I should be doing to maximize performance??? Thanks for your help. BobL 11-24-06, 05:35 PM 1. photo research pr650 or equivalent instrument :) Video essential, sound & vision HT tune up, Avia, DVE, Monster, etc will all do fine for user level adjustments on the DVD input. For HD you need a signal generator but hopefully HD DVE will be out soon. I'm not sure if Comcast broadcast any test patterns on any of their HD channels at a certain time. 2. Yes you can use an upscaling DVD player, may or may not give better results than the processing in the 710 depends on the player. Overscan is most commonly used on cable/sat signals when you get lines typically at the top of the picture. Simply, you are seeing information like timing, etc that is part of the signal that isn't meant to be seen. Overscan zooms the picture slightly so you don't see it. If you don't have a problem don't use it. BTW, Gamma can't accurately be adjusted without instrumentation. 3. a. Use 720P b. On that PJ 480i does a better job. You can turn it off and the cable box will upscale to 720P (or whatever set) but you will have no aspect/ zoom control. Don't hesitate to try all the 4:3 settings and see which you prefer for SD. We use different settings depending on the display. 4. Never 5. See if the 720P on the cable box fixes that. 6. ISF calibration by someone with knowledge of this machine an either the PR650 mentioned or equivalent spectroradiometers. Otherwise, just stick to the calibration DVD's. Hope this helps. Bob wesill 11-25-06, 11:37 AM Thanks for all the advise. A few further questions: 1. If I did get a top notch DVD player and wanted to try to use its video processing rather than the video processing of this PJ, what do I have to do to the PJ to make that happen? 2. In the 4:3 Override Setting, if I set it at 480i as you recommend, I get no picture from SD channels (but I do get a picture from HD channels). Remember, I'm using the DVI input for TV watching and when I go to an SD channel, I get a message on the screen that says "Not Supported Mode". So would I be better off using component cables and going with 480I? 3. Something I forgot to ask before, what is Film Mode? It says "supports enhanced screen quality for films of 24 frames". Thanks Kevin R. Anderson 11-25-06, 01:28 PM 3. Something I forgot to ask before, what is Film Mode? It says "supports enhanced screen quality for films of 24 frames". It simply ensures the proper pull-down cadence for converting 24 fps to 60Hz. The projector probably will automatically detect the correct mode, but some DVDs do not have this flag set correctly, so this forces the 24fps mode. djdube525 12-03-06, 08:47 AM First off I'm a noob with all the terms so I'll try to describe what I'm seeing the best I can. Finally put up my projector after a slow process (work has been busy) on the theater. The equipment I'm using along with the 710 is: OPPO 971H DVD Player (via 35' Premium DVI cable from Monoprice) Scientific Atlanta HD Cable Box (via 35' shielded component video from Monoprice) The problem, when looking at test patterns, or text images from the DVD player, I'm seeing maybe a ghosted image around the text/lines. Like a faint red and blue "line" just outside/around and diagonal to the image being viewed. Does that make sense? When going into the setup menu for the projector, everything looks crystal clear. Just not when I'm looking at a test pattern on a dvd. I'm wondering if it's the cable (I hope not as it's burried in the wall), the DVD player (I have tried every facet of turning things on and off - True life, CCS, Noise Reduction - currently have everything off). Ive ensured the DVD player is sending a 720p signal. Any ideas on what my problem may be? I thought the problem associated with longer DVI cables is that you'll see hot spotting, which I have not seen any. Is this something calibration would fix (I've tried using AVE to fix things, but didn't see much of an improvement if any at all). Can anyone point me to a calibrator that has all the special equipment Ken talks about in post 211 in the Raleigh/Durham NC area? Or better yet, if anyone is coming through the area with all the pertinent equipment, can you PM me? Dave Kevin R. Anderson 12-03-06, 09:06 AM I think what you are seeing is called "chromatic aberration," which is an artifact from the lens. This is not unusual for a projector in this price range, but it can be somewhat mitigated by making sure that your projector is exactly focused; that you are using the proper offset, meaning the screen is at the proper height in relation to the height of the lens (e.g., no keystone or lens offset is required); that the lens is exactly in the center of the screen (e.g., the plane of the lens is exactly 90 degrees to the screen); and that the zoom setting is in the mid-location of its range (which means you may have to move your projector forward or backward to hit the sweet spot). Like you, I had this on my H710, but I could only see it with test patterns with fine lines of white on a dark or black background. In real world viewing, it is not a serious issue, and you would have to pay a lot more money to get a projector with a lens that minimizes this effect. For the money, this is the finest projector you can purchase when it comes to picture quality (build quality may be another issue). carpecervisi 12-03-06, 09:44 AM I posted this in another thread a month or so back but never got any response: I'm a happy owner of an (R) unit, my original one died from startup issues way back when this first came to light. The question I have is that I have a line on another 710 with startup issues and the current owner doesn't want to deal with it. I can get this for a steal...in retrospect it's possible that's how he got it and why he doesn't send it to Samsung. ;) Does anyone at this point know what the actual "fix" from Samsung involves and how a guy who gets the PJ cheap ($500) might go about doing it DIY? If we're talking a few hundred $$ in parts, I'm definitely interested. So who here knows exactly what they did? Thanks, -chad Kevin R. Anderson 12-03-06, 09:56 AM My understanding is that the "fix" had to do with resolving certain grounding issues in the unit, but this could really mean taking any number of remedial actions, including replacing hardware. For $500 I might consider it but only if I was willing to pay the Samsung repair center to perform the "fix." I don't know what that cost would be, but it seems you could get an estimate. djdube525 12-03-06, 10:03 AM Hey Kevin, Thanks for the quick response! So the lense is about 3" above the top of the screen (100" Carda BW, mounted somewhere between 13.5' - 14' from the screen. Well... I'm glad it's something somewhat of a common thing. I was getting all worried. Trying to tweak a number of things (the audio sync with the oppo is driving me bananas), so I guess I'm being a little sensitive with things (I was really worried my cable runs were too long). I have to admit the picture is great. Over the thanksgiving holiday I put my dad to work. He ripped out the center light (this is a converted bonus room), but in two 12' tracks for lighting, fished the video cables through the walls, added an outlet to the ceiling, and mounted the projector. BTW projects are great for parents. :p When we finally got it running, we put in Gladiator and fast forwarded to the collesium scene. Picture was great... but something just wasn't right. Then I realized the sub wasn't on. The grin on my dad's face was priceless. :) Anyway, thanks for note. BTW... is there a list of calibrators that are certified for this projector? Is there such a thing? The vast majority of isf certified calibrators as listed in isf's website for the Raleigh area don't have any info other than address and phone, and I don't know any of whom sell the Samsung. Thanks again! Dave Kevin R. Anderson 12-03-06, 10:18 AM The Samsung is very easy to calibrate, so I wouldn't worry if the ISF person doesn't sell Samsung. If you search this thread, somewhere I posted my settings after doing a calibration. It will not be a perfect match, but it gives you some settings to experiment with (just write down your default settings before making any changes). All of these changes can be done in the user menu -- you don't need to get into the service menu to calibrate this projector (unless you are using the $12,300 Photoresearch equipment -- see link (http://www.photoresearch.com/current/pr650.asp) ) John Clark 12-03-06, 11:51 PM Any word at all as to whether there are now, new units available for sale that clearly have the problems resolved? Would a projector (with concern to video lag) be a good device to use with xbox360 , htpc , and casual tv watching? I ask because samsung DLP's (RP) have had problems with video lag in the past, and was wondering if this is something that translates over to FP type of devices. I think the culprit was a feature called DNIE? Any input as to whether this type of display device would be a good gaming display would be well appreciated. Also, does anyone have any xbox360 pictures on to post of this projector? Thanks in advance. I also use it for Xbox360. It looks great. No pictures, however. Not that it would translate well on the internet. There are no noticable delays that I can detect, audio, or vidoe, when using any input source with this unit. Note that I do not use the video switching ability of my processor, however. You can disable DNIE if you want. As you say that you recently took an interest, be aware that in order to use a projector for anything, you need to have light control in that room. It needs to be dark, or you can't see anything. You also need to use a screen with about 1.1 gain or higher. And white, to boot. Carada is where I got mine. alexp247365 01-05-07, 03:22 PM thanks for the info. I would assume no ghosting or blur when playing games then. Is this accurate? I connected it to a PC through the DVI connection and the resolution is automatically set to 1280 x 720 which is the projector's native resolution. However, the sides of the desktop is not within the viewable image! In particular the task bar is mostly out of the viewable area. Thanks, Ramin Person99 03-21-08, 10:36 AM I recently had a chance to viewing one of these. The color and gray scale accuracy was wonderful. But the one I saw had the banding that has been mentioned. I connected the source to another DVI-D display and it had no banding, so I know it is the PJ, not the sources conversion to RGB. The one I saw was an "[R]" one. Your projector looks as good/better than most of the 1080p LCDs. The only advantage of the 1080p LCDs is better black levels. Your projector has more accurate colors than pretty much any other digital is capable of, so you will sacrifice that. GeorgeAB 04-10-08, 02:45 PM No need to sacrifice anything. GeorgeAB 04-10-08, 04:03 PM Joe Kane contributed to the development of the Samsung BD1200, which used the Silicon Optics HQV Reon processor chip. It's no longer a current model. You may be able to find their BD5000 BD/HD DVD combo player, also with the Reon chip, if you act quickly. The only other BD player I know of with a Silicon Optics processor in it is the new Denon (there might be a Marantz equivalent). It has the even better Realta chip but retails for $2k. I've worked through a pretty silly (newb) issue already after finding my DVD player set incorrectly. The image is pretty impressive now, fills the screen beautifully, and potentially putting at risk my long term goal of re-installing my CRT Sony G-70. In the mean time, to give the DLP a fair shake, I'd like to know what people still using this pj, hopefully still following the thread once and a while are using for Blu-ray and/or other HDMI output enabled sources to get the most out of this projector. In the CRT world, the answer is pretty clear, or at least there is a pretty good consensus that devices like the HD-Fury or custom cards like the Moome are the way to go for my G-70. What is considered the "ultimate" way to feed this pj from an HDMI source? Conversion to the PC input? Converstion to the DVI input? Converstion to the RGB input? TIA Alex Lipowich GeorgeAB 06-18-08, 12:06 PM What is considered the "ultimate" way to feed this pj from an HDMI source? Conversion to the PC input? Converstion to the DVI input? Converstion to the RGB input? The "ultimate" way to feed an HDMI signal to a digital display, such as a DLP projector, would be to keep the signal digital, at least in theory. Use the DVI input on the 710. This will eliminate two signal conversion stages in the signal path: D/A from the HDMI feed, then A/D after the analog input on the projector. Joe Kane has recommended using the DVI input on the 710 when a digital source signal is available. He oversaw the design and demonstrated it all over the world for years. Be sure to calibrate/tweak it sit back and enjoy!. fastforty 06-25-08, 06:09 AM A quick question guys,i also own a 710 ae but haven't had a chance to use it yet(theater is under contruction)so once i set it up would i connect it to my I-SCAN VP-30 using an hdmi to hdmi with adapter dvi plug and (so i've been told) suffer some image loss or just use component cables? The hdmi to hdmi cable was installed through my ceiling long before aquiring the projector. Also, can i turn off the video processing in the 710 and let the VP-30 handle it all?TIA GeorgeAB 06-25-08, 10:49 AM The answer to your first question is 2 posts prior to yours. You will suffer some image loss only if you use another cable other than digital. The processing in the projector cannot be "turned off," but you can bypass it by feeding it's native signal: 720P. Your outboard video processor is likely superior to the one in the projector. Keep everything in the digital domain as much as possible. Adam-DiVine 07-28-09, 03:44 PM Just picked up a new 700 for a song. I always like getting the high end technology from a couple of years ago for a good price (less than 1/10th of retail). We will see how it compares to my current projector (Sanyo Z60). I am hoping the 700 bests it in every way. I wonder if Samsung will honor the warranty still?? The unit is a leftover that was never opened from an out of business AV shop. GeorgeAB 07-28-09, 05:39 PM I wonder if Samsung will honor the warranty still?? The unit is a leftover that was never opened from an out of business AV shop. Contact Samsung and get their answer in writing. They should be able to verify if the unit has never been sold to a consumer. There should be original warranty registration cards and instructions in the box. The image produced by the Samsung should put the Sanyo LCD to shame. I have owned both and there is no comparison, except the Sanyo had a few more pixels in the image. In every other regard, the Samsung far outperforms the Sanyo. Adam-DiVine 07-28-09, 08:54 PM I will try to contact samsung. I can't wait to try this projector out. jxo 07-29-09, 12:57 PM I will try to contact samsung. I can't wait to try this projector out. I still have one in use. Samsung replaced my original a while back after it suffered from the dreaded start up issues. I built a second home theater in the basement for the kids (so I could finally watch something myself) with the 710 and a dirt cheap Monoprice 135" screen. The screen is way too big for the projector but it still looks great-- I always liked the colors on it. I have a JVC in the main theater-- 1080 resolution and much better blacks make a big difference to the videophile but the kids could care less (they like the huge floor to ceiling screen). Good luck-- I hope you have a unit that will last more than a few months. KX250F 07-30-09, 12:25 AM Does anyone know where you can get one of these fixed (start up issue) without going through Samsung. Mine started acting up one month after replacing the bulb in September 2007. I just went ahead and replaced it with a Marantz 15S1 1080P and put the Samsung back in its original box and put it in storage. I had to get something from the storage unit a few days ago and saw the box setting there. I would like to get it repaired and use it in a spare bedroom for the kids to watch movies and play video games on. I did try and go through Samsung in November 2007 and all I have to say is what a freakin joke. I called them six different times in a two week period and each and every time I got a different answer. Thanks. Adam-DiVine 07-30-09, 07:45 AM does any one know if the start up problem was only with the 710, or was it also with the 700? I was wondering if the cost reduction between the two units resulted in reliability issues. Just a thought... Adam-DiVine 08-02-09, 11:40 AM So I hooked up the projector and it looks pretty good. I think that I need to upgrade my source. I am using an OPPO 981HD and it just doesn't put out that great of an image. This was really apparent when I switched from the Sanyo Z60 to the Samsung. Even though the picture is better, I am still bothered by digital noise (or maybe dithering) in the image. It is most pronounced in backgrounds of mostly the same color (like an interior wall or a dark sky). I am going to post in the OPPO thread to see if there are any suggestions. Adam-DiVine 08-25-09, 11:57 AM Well that didn't last long... My 700 died after just 30 hours. I am going to try to get warranty service, we will see how it goes. fleaman 08-25-09, 11:59 AM Yikes  :( Adam-DiVine 08-25-09, 02:19 PM I contacted Samsung and filled out an online repair request. I received a ticket number and no further instructions. So I called a representative and he said that projector repairs under warranty are dealt with by sending out a new projector to the customer and then sending back the defective unit in the same box. If this actually happens, I will be happy. I just hope the new one doesn't exhibit the same problem after such short use. GeorgeAB 08-25-09, 02:36 PM If you need out of warranty repair work done, try contacting this company (http://www.mastertechtv.com/) in the Atlanta area and ask for Richard Fisher. He is the owner of the company and also owns either a 700 or a 710. The company has been an electronics repair service center for many manufacturers for many years, as well as a resource for audio and video calibration services.
