mello 1 02-25-06, 05:16 PM Does anyone have any info about this new receiver?
Is it HDCP compliant?
Dimensions?
Has anyone seen it in action at CES? Opinions about it?
Links to quality photos of the front & back?
etc.
MSmith83 02-25-06, 06:53 PM There has been many good things said about the AVR-2807, and it won a best of CES award. It has two HDMI inputs that are capable of passing 1080p signals. HDCP is a given. The question that I have is whether these HDMI inputs are version 1.2. A picture of its rear panel can be found here (http://www.cnet.com/4831-11405-6413272.html).

broadwayblue 02-27-06, 06:33 PM Do we have any idea as to when the 2807 will be released?
one AVS member is reporting that he is due to receive his 2807 on Wednesday.
Just got a call from my friendly AV salesman. My 2807 is expected on 4/10/06. Unless I find it somewhere else sooner. This sounds like a great receiver for the sub-$1000 price. :)
How sub 1000 are we talking about here anyone know any authorized dealers that are posting prices? I am either buying one of these or an hk 640 but It seems like the hk has been pushed back and I need a new reciever pronto.
im getting mine from an authorized dealer. I don't think we are supposed to post prices on the forum so I will say that it will be just under $1000
sticksy 02-27-06, 08:20 PM thanks for starting this, i was about to post the same thing earlier today.
april, huh? everything I've seen says march but your guy probably has better visibility to these things than I would.
Numbernine 02-27-06, 08:50 PM I am either buying one of these or an hk 640 but It seems like the hk has been pushed back
Same here. I'm in the market for a new receiver, but the HK 640 looks like it'll take too long to come out. The 2807 looks equally good. :-)
mello 1 02-27-06, 09:49 PM Does Denon make the HK 640? I haven't heard anything about the 640.
Numbernine 02-27-06, 10:20 PM Does Denon make the HK 640? I haven't heard anything about the 640.
HK 640 is the Harmon-Kardon AVR 640. It's going to be released sometime in the future, but not soon enough. :)
Jason Priestley 02-27-06, 10:39 PM I'm ready tou spend the bucks and get this sucker. Anywhere to preorder? Also with all the talks of Blu-RAy and HD-DVD and HDCP and AACS, is the Denon 2807 HDCP and AACS complaint? I read in an article at gear.ign.com that receivers that upconvert may not be able to use blu-ray or hd-dvd. First thats just really crappy of the new next-gen dvd format, but if true I may have to hold off on my purchase...
The 2807 does an 1080p HDMI pass through from what I have read so it should be BR/HDVD compliant but don't take my word for it.

I'm not sure why that would be true. It won't need to upconvert the signal from the DVD formats but just pass them through via HDMI. Perhaps if your receiver does not have and HDMI input?

mello 1 02-28-06, 09:20 AM I emailed Denon & received this reply:
The AVR-2807 soon to be released at the end of March
follows the requirements of HDMI that is implemented
at this time. The copy protect used is HDMI HDCP version
1.1. The AACS HD protection is not finalized nor implemented
in receivers yet. All indications show it will be a
little while yet before all the dust settles.

What is the AACS protection for again? I just want to know if I can play movies through the PS3 through the Denon.
If anyone else has any questions I recommend emailing him. He replied in a day.
mello 1 02-28-06, 10:49 AM I did some conversions of phoard1's info:
17.09 inches wide
6.73 inches tall
16.89 inches deep
30.8 lb.
I looked at the photo of the rear layout, and I see 3 HDMI connectors, 2 in and 1 out.
I'm new to this, so can someone please tell me how these can/should be utilized.
For example, would you connect the DVD player AND HD-receiver (assuming both are HDMI compatible) to the Denon and then the receiver connects to the display ??
Are there options to use the Denon's HDMI connectors with audio as well as video?
Thanks.

trpltongue 02-28-06, 02:04 PM If the reply that Mello got is accurate, Denon is saying it's only HDCP 1.2 which is a big pita. Why wouldn't they implement HDCP 1.2? Arghhh.
mello 1 02-28-06, 02:33 PM If the reply that Mello got is accurate, Denon is saying it's only HDCP 1.2 which is a big pita. Why wouldn't they implement HDCP 1.2? Arghhh.
What's the difference between HDCP 1.1 & 1.2?
mello 1 02-28-06, 02:38 PM I found some info about 1.2:
When was the HDMI specification released?
The HDMI 1.0 specification was released in December 2002.
The HDMI 1.1 specification was released in May 2004.
The HDMI 1.2 specification was released in August of 2005.
The HDMI 1.2a specification was released in December of 2005.
What has been added in the HDMI 1.2 specification?
The HDMI 1.2 specification also adds features and capabilities that increase HDMI's appeal for use in both the CE and PC industries. Specifically, the features and modifications for HDMI 1.2 include:
* Support for One Bit Audio format, such as SuperAudio CD's DSD (Direct Stream Digital)
* Changes to offer better support for current and future PCs with HDMI outputs, including:
o Availability of the widely-used HDMI Type A connector for PC sources and displays with full support for PC video formats
o Ability for PC sources to use their native RGB color-space while retaining the option to support the YCbCr CE color-space
o Requirement for HDMI 1.2 and later displays to support future low-voltage (i.e., AC-coupled) sources, such as those based on PCI Express I/O technology
What has been added in the HDMI 1.2a specification?
With the release of HDMI 1.2a, CEC features and command sets and CEC compliance tests are now fully specified. In addition, the Founders have created version 1.2a of the HDMI Compliance Test Specification (CTS), which includes a CEC Supplement. HDMI CTS 1.2a has been updated for technical consistency with HDMI Specification 1.2a as well as to the recently released HDMI Specification 1.2.
Significantly, CTS 1.2a contains additional cable and connector testing and Authorized Testing Center (ATC) submission requirements. Specifically, under CTS 1.2a, the Adopter shall submit for testing to the ATC any new HDMI cable whose length exceeds previously tested cables.
Additionally, HDMI Licensing, LLC will maintain a list of approved connectors. For a device to pass CTS 1.2a testing at an ATC, all connectors on such device must appear on the approved connector list. To add a connector to this list, the vendor must submit to the ATC or HDMI Licensing, LLC full and passing testing results.
Is HDMI 1.2a backwards compatible with 1.2, 1.1 and 1.0?
Yes, the latest HDMI specification is fully backwards compatible with previous versions.
trpltongue 02-28-06, 03:46 PM THe biggest benefit of 1.2a (for a lot of people) is that the SA8300HD cable box can communicate with receivers using 1.2a and not so well with receivers using 1.1 or 1.2.
While the 2807 looks to be a great receiver, I think I'm more interested in the upcoming Pioneer 1016, which supposedly will have XM and HDMI for $499 (coming in June). It probably won't do any upconversion to HDMI, though.
mello 1 02-28-06, 04:47 PM I emailed the Denon Rep again. Here's my question:
Is the AVR-2807 upgradeable? Can the AACS HD
protection be added when it is finalized or can I
upgrade the HDCP to 1.2 or would I need to wait for a
model that does have that built in & purchase that one
instead?
His reply was:
I have not heard anything about upgradeability on the
upcoming AVR-2807. I would guess in the case of AACS
it might be more involved than a simple upgrade, but
I don't know until all the dust settles. Really it
will be a while until HD equipment is truly finalized
and ready, plus all of the software manufacturers have
to produce titles to play. The current DVD formats
aren't going anywhere for quite a while yet.
Some of this discussion regarding HDMI specifications gives me pause in terms of buying this or any other receiver with HDMI -- it just seems like there's a lot of dust that has yet to settle.
I might decide to get a less expensive receiver ($300 to $500) without HDMI for the time being and upgrade in a few years, at which point all this HDMI stuff should be sorted out.
We'll see ...
TMG
Jason Priestley 02-28-06, 09:29 PM That is disturbing. Additionally, I just thought that the AACS was settled this last week. Blu-Ray is scheduled to be released May 23rd and HD-DVD in late march/early april so AACS needed to be finished before they were released.....getting concerned about the purchase now. Maybe I"ll just go out and buy a 3805...sigh.

if true this is a huge bummer. if it won't work with the 8300 it's not gonna work for me.
dutchgolden 03-02-06, 02:07 AM I stopped into an Omaha store today and asked the saleperson about the 2807. He didn't know about it, but checked his computer and saw that they are scheduled to receive a few on March 15th. His computer showed a retail price of little over grand. I was about ready to walk away - but he offered it to me for what I thought was a very reasonable price, and .....
"Hello, my name is Chad and I am an impulse electronics buyer" :)
Can't wait to try it out .....
THe biggest benefit of 1.2a (for a lot of people) is that the SA8300HD cable box can communicate with receivers using 1.2a and not so well with receivers using 1.1 or 1.2.
If the 8300 has the right firmware, it should have no problem with 1.1, 1.2 or 1.2a.
Is there any reason to go to an authorized dealer vs. a non-authorized dealer?
I know that every manufacturer website claims that that they will not support pruducts purchased through other channels but is that actually enforced?
In other words, how much could I expect to purchase the 2807 under the $1,099 MSRP?
And is that discount worth it?
phoard1 03-02-06, 09:01 AM I looked at the photo of the rear layout, and I see 3 HDMI connectors, 2 in and 1 out.

That exactly right. But there's more. It'll also upconvert signals input in component, composite, etc and submit output it to the display via HDMI. However, unlike some receivers it does not upscale the signals. So it doesn't take a 480P in and make it a 1080i out, for example.
I wanted to get the 2807 for my bedroom, it seemed like the perfect low cost solution. However, looking at the manual on the Denon website, there is no mention of XM. All of the CES pictures and reports showed that it had XM. The lower cost 1906 has XM. Anyone else notice this or have more information.

It has a xm antenna plug on the rear panel as well as xm silkscreened on the front panel. Check out the photos.

Maybe the manual was written before the XM Port was added. ?? In the manual, the XM Port is left out of the diagrams and no reference to it as far as I could tell.
Maybe I skipped over it somewhere.
But the photos show that the XM Port is located under the HDMI connections on the back panel pic.
ffarrar is right.
trpltongue 03-02-06, 10:08 AM If the 8300 has the right firmware, it should have no problem with 1.1, 1.2 or 1.2a.
Yeah that's true, the problem is getting the right firmware on the 8300. As a consumer you can't do anything about it on the 8300, however, you can choose a receiver which has 1.2a hdmi spec and not have to worry about it.
pseudopaw 03-02-06, 12:30 PM What are the main differences between the 3806 and the 2807 besides the 10W per channel, the HDCD decoding and $200? I know this won awards at CES, but what makes this so much different than the 3806 that is already available?
I think I will have a tough time deciding between the 2807, the 3806, and the 4306.
Thanks in advance for the help.

trpltongue 03-02-06, 12:50 PM Taken from Cnet:
"So why all the excitement over the AVR-2807? Consider Denon's $1,300 AVR-3806. It's a great receiver, but the somewhat half-baked HDMI capabilities--analog video sources and the onscreen display are limited to 480i resolution via the HDMI output--limits usefulness on many HDTVs and monitors. For $200 less, the AVR-2807 looks to deliver a lot more for the home-theater enthusiast. The AVR-2807 is scheduled to be available in March 2006, in black or silver"

But, if your Cable STB can't repeat HDMI, then you don't get the OSD in 1080i anyway, you get nothing, correct?

If you consider $1100, a little over a grand.
I am sorry, make that $1099.99, that looks closer to a $1000. ;)

I don't understand the distinction between UPCONVERT vs. UPSCALE.
Is one of these good and the other bad?
Please explain the above quote to me.
Thanks.
TMG
pseudopaw 03-02-06, 01:36 PM OK, so the 3806 does not convert analog to 480p, whereas the 2807 does? Does this really only effect the OSD and material from a VCR/Camcorder? I assume that progressive scan and upconverting 720p DVD players will still be output at 480p and 720p through HDMI.
Also, I see that the 4306 received very high praise on CNET.

trpltongue 03-02-06, 01:40 PM Upscaling actually changes the image (480i to 480p)

"Upscaling actually changes the image (480i to 480p)
Upconversion changes the format (s-video to component, s-video to hdmi, component to hdmi, etc)"
I'm not sure this is correct. For example, why all the fuss about upconverting dvd players if they don't improve the image?
If the image isn't improved, why would I care about upconversion if only the format changes?
Someone help us out here.
broadwayblue 03-02-06, 05:16 PM wasn't an AVS member supposed to receive his 2807 on Wednesday? i guess he's enjoying it so much he hasn't had a chance to report back yet. ;)
kaanage 03-02-06, 05:57 PM If the image isn't improved, why would I care about upconversion if only the format changes?
It lets you consolidate your cabling from different sources to the display.
Some DVD players upscale as their scaling can be better than that of some displays - they couldn't upconvert unless they had a video input for a different source.

This is a little misleading because according to the AVR-2807 manual the onscreen display via HDMI is only 480i and there is a small note in there to make sure you have a compatible display...
phoard1 03-03-06, 09:43 AM "Upscaling actually changes the image (480i to 480p)

It is confusing. I think the terms get use interchangably at times. For Yamaha receivers they say:
Fully Analog Video Up-Conversion to HDMI and Component Video
Output with TBC
De-Interlacing (480i to 480p)
Up-Scaling (480i to 1080i/720p)
However, the point is that the Denon 2807 will allow you to send your source data input via an analog input and then out via HDMI. It basically passes the signal through via HDMI. It doesn't upscale it to a higher resolution. However, if your source or display can do the upscaling it probably isn' important. The Yamaha V2600 for example can take a 480i source, upscale it to 1080i and send it to your display via HDMI.
trpltongue 03-03-06, 11:11 AM TMG,
Upscaling changes the resolution (480 to 720, etc.)
Upconverting changes the carrier signal (rca to component etc)
Upconverting can also change from interlaced to progressive but will not alter resolution (480i to 480p, etc.)
DVD players are upSCALING. The take the dvd signal and upscale it to whatever resolution you desire (720p, 1080i). DVD's are a digital signal to begin with and therefore DVD players to not upconvert anything (they don't change the carrier signal).
Opinion needed...
For a multiroom setup do you think I am better off getting the Denon 2807 and an RF remote or the Yamaha 2600 which comes with the zone2/3 remote and installing IR repeaters (not a big deal as I already have the wires where they need to be?
Anyone else considering the Yamaha vs. Denon...other difference I see is 1080i vs. 1080p
dtsfanoh 03-03-06, 02:36 PM im getting mine from an authorized dealer. I don't think we are supposed to post prices on the forum so I will say that it will be just under $1000
Same here. I was quoted today by an authorized dealer as a half ben under $1000.
With Chicago sales tax of 9% it is easier to pay MSRP and get the free shipping to my door vs. paying $1000 + tax and having to pick it up.
Brian Corr 03-03-06, 03:22 PM The denon rep is still telling me the end of March for the 2807.
crutchfield and listen up are taking preorders expecting end of month release. you can call them but should be up on their websites next week
mello 1 03-03-06, 03:51 PM I asked the some more questions to the Denon rep. This is what I wrote:
Can you explain what the video game mode does on the
receiver? Does it help prevent audio lag while playing
videogames or does it improve the video?
Is there a setting that will prevent the volume from
going over a certain level? For example, when I watch
the Perfect Storm on DVD I constantly have my hand on
the volume control to increase it during the dialog
sections & then to quick drop the volume when an ocean
wave spikes the volume up. (Not great when living in
an apartment.)
I created a thread about the AVR-2807 on avsforum.com
& someone else posted a question that you might be
able to answer. His post is:
I was under the impression that AACS was not going to
be required in receivers or in monitors to play
Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, only in drives/players to prevent
direct disk copying from say...a PC with a Blu-Ray

In the same case, the HDMI output would have only the
HDCP protection scheme. Any HDMI monitor or receiver
with HDCP would be able to pass, decode, display the
AV info. The 2807 will have HDMI 1.1 so it should be
able to work with the new players.
If I have this correct, someone please verify. I have
been waiting for this receiver since I first heard
about it.
His reply was:
The video game mode is a surround sound mode for effect.
It does not do anything for video. There is no volume
limiter on the various inputs that actively detects the
volume level and reduces it. However you do have under
Audio Input Setup a mode for Input Function Level. This
feature will allow you to balance the level between inputs
so that when you switch between inputs it will be smooth.
Under the Options Setup you have a Volume Control setup.
This will allow you to set a fixed limit on how high you
can turn up the main volume control. For Dolby Digital
and some dts signals we have a surround parameter called
D. Comp. which will allow you to choose a compression
level to squash the peeks. If you will be using these
two types of signals, then this might work for you. As
far as the AACS, I believe the receiver will need HDMI
version 1.3 for it to work properly from the information
that I have seen. I can't agree with his statement.
The receivers will also need the proper decoders for the
new formats as well. In the meantime assuming the device
will have 8 channel analog outputs, they can be connected
to a receiver's external 8 channel input.

about the 1080p, in the manaul if you search 1080p there is a chart about video in and out conversin table(page 18). At the bottom of the table it says "Note resolution of 1080p is not handled." I also ask denon technical support about the 3806, and got 2 different answer, one said its able to pass 1080p, and the other says no. the chart in the manual are excaltly same as the chart in the 3806 manaul. Now I'm totally confuse about wheather 3806/2807 are able to pass 1080p or not.
mattbrown 03-03-06, 07:40 PM I feel flattered to have my post forwarded to Denon and to get the response. :) Okay, so from what he said, "As
far as the AACS, I believe the receiver will need HDMI
version 1.3 for it to work properly from the information
that I have seen. I can't agree with his statement."
Since the AACS spec was just finalized within the last week or two, that would mean (according to my reading of his response), that there is not a single piece of hardware (monitors/receivers) on the market, in your house,etc.. that has HDMI ver1.1...that will work with Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.
Nothing will work with these players that are coming out within months?!?!? We have to wait for 1.3 before we can watch movies over HDMI? So what's the point in buying an HDMI receiver if it only has 1.1?
mello 1, I know all you were doing was posting the rep's reply. Don't mistake my post for shooting the messenger. Thanks for taking the time to contact Denon. I just want to see an official response from the community. Will HDMI 1.1 work with the new players or not?
Forgive me for not taking the Denon rep's word for it.
phoard1 03-03-06, 07:53 PM about the 1080p, in the manaul if you search 1080p there is a chart about video in and out conversin table(page 18).
You are paraphrasing. It states: "Signals up-converted to HDMI are output to the HDMI monitor with the resolution at which they are input. Note that resolutions of 1080P are not handled." The key here is "signals up-converted to HDMI".
The way I read this is simply that you cannot input a 1080P via component and have it output on HDMI. This is consistent with the chart. The chart also shows that that 1080P input via HDMI is output via HDMI.
This is on page 14 of the manual (page 18 of the PDF)
SuperBuck27 03-05-06, 03:17 PM If someone can update the group as to the first 2807 deliverie and where those units were sourced from -- that would be terrific.
Thanks.
SuperBuck27 03-05-06, 03:21 PM TMG,
Upscaling changes the resolution (480 to 720, etc.)
This is an awesome explanation. Thank you. Dumb question: I take it this means that the 2807, while great at upconverting, cannot help me upscale NTSC and other signals? Still need a DVDO type or other box to do this? Thanks.
mattbrown 03-07-06, 11:43 AM I saw this question in the "Yammy 2600 vs Denon 2807" thread. Is there a subwoofer out on this Denon. The only thing I see in the picture is a sub out for the pre out. Will that work?

Yup. Connect your Sub to the SW Pre-Out.
Jason Priestley 03-07-06, 10:33 PM the denon dealer i spoke to said that he had heard it was pushed towards the end of the month....sigh...I'm getting my 5.1 speakers this weekend. I'm wondering if I should just get the yamaha 2600 or the denon 4306. Do either of them allow you to consolidate all your video components (both digital and analog) and have one hdmi cable run into the TV?

I think both the Denon and Yamaha will allow a single HDMI output connection for all video, but is a month really worth $1000?

The Yamaha 2600 surely does. It also upscales signals to 720P or 1080i. The main cons seem to be that it doesn't handle 1080P and it is slightly more expensive, maybe 20%.
Ben Harper 03-17-06, 08:20 AM My distributor spoke with Denon. They said the 2807's will be in next week. Hope this is the case.

I have finally settled on the 2807, was starting to look at the 4306 thinking it had better multizone capabilities but a 3rd zone requires a preamp on both recievers so I will stick with the 2807.
Bought my 2807 today at Magnolia...picking it up Sunday.
Cajun_Mike 03-17-06, 04:42 PM Bought my 2807 today at Magnolia...picking it up Sunday.
Come on Man... give us more information. Which Magnolia store in what state, how much did you pay? Is the unit in stock or they expect it to arrive for your pickup on Sunday? Gives the complete skinny!

Sorry...didn't realize I would get you worked up by not posting the skinny! :)
I bought it at the Magnolia in Tacoma...1st one to buy one over the counter according to the Magnolia rep. A few were preordered..but I am getting mine first! One dollar shy of a grand. They have them in stock at their warehouse but not their stores. Mine will be in Sunday...not sure if they will be stocking the stores this day as well. I asked about return policy....30 days money back. I told them I was concerned about the HDMI switch and my Moto 6412. The rep said..."you will not be needing to return the unit for any reason".
Did I miss anything?
I'll report more once I get the unit installed and fully functional.
Feel free to ask more questions if anyone wants to know more
My AVR 2807 shipped from Crutchfield today.... Yeah!
It will arrive in 3 days!!!
Good news! :) :) :) :) :D :D :D
snowblade2 03-17-06, 10:36 PM Crutchfield has them listed? I checked the site, but couldn't find any :(.
Called them on March7th and it shipped today! I have a package of 39.26 lbs on its way... look at the info from their website:

:D
You need to call Crutchfield or any other authorized dealer. I called Magnolia here in Bellevue, WA and they had some... they received 40 but 36 were already sold as pre-ordered!
snowblade2 03-18-06, 12:20 PM I just got off the phone with Crutchfield, and mine's shipping out on Monday :). I went a little nuts with some extras (speaker wire, connectors, universal remote), so the HT setup's getting a total facelift. Now, what to do with my old JVC RX-DP10VBK...
dlm10541 03-18-06, 01:19 PM I ordered from Crutchfield this morning. Shipping Monday. They had 38 at the time. :D
Magnolia hi fi in oregon has them in the main warehouse and could have one there as soon as tomorow if ordered. if not they said it should be displayed by tuesday...
YodaDad 03-20-06, 07:54 AM Bought my 2807 @ Magnolia Bellevue WA Fri 3/17 for 999.
Question: I have a toshiba dvd which has hdmi out. I figured it was a snap the toshiba hdmi to the denon hdmi to the Samsung 6768 via HMDI. However, no picture and no sound. The Sammy can't find a signal. Suggestions. Thanx.

Is your dvd player HDCP compliant? It sounds like it might not be.

Try going to page 49 of the manual and set up the HDMI video input. The audio will automatically be passed through when the video is assigned to HDMI 1 or 2
I know it's important, but I'd rather not learn about the various versions of HDMI -- 1.1, 1.2, etc. Maybe things will get clearer when more of these are available, and folks can describe their actual experiences, with specific components.
For example, I'd love to see a post where someone describes the following:
I have the new 2807 -- I connected my Panny S77 (or S97, or whatever) and my DirecTV HD-receiver to each of the HDMI inputs, and I connected the single HDMI output to my Panny 32" LCD TV, and everything works GREAT -- oh, and by the way, no macroblocking!
anyone?
YodaDad 03-20-06, 01:14 PM dlm thanx. Followed instructions and now have video!! :) Still don't have audio. Magnolia wanted to blame the Toshiba DVD as "we don't sell those." Tried to change the audio from original setting to "bitstream" No change: no audio, still have video. Any other suggestions?

On the same page(49) once you havr set the video toggle down and see if you are set to connect audio to the speakers or to the display. Apparently you can only do one or the other.
Why do you want to go directly to the display with audio when you are using the 2807 for audio?
Mine arrives on Weds so I will be smarter then????
YodaDad 03-20-06, 02:41 PM Maybe I'm slow, but all I'm trying to do at this point is get the Toshiba dvd to send the audio portion of the the dvd signal via HMDI to the 2807. I'm guessing once I get that done, the toshiba will also send CD information via the same HDMI.
Glad yours is getting to you Wed. I'm quite sure helping me will make you smarter.
Can anyone explain how the denon room eq works. Does it set different levels for certain frequencies? If so how many frequencies does it check and does it also eq the subwoofer? I tried reading the manual but I couldn't find any specifics.
mattbrown 03-20-06, 03:13 PM YodaDad,
How did you get the price point down to $999? Magnolia here in Baltimore is listing it at $1099 when their shipment arrives in a week or two.
Matt
JayMan007 03-20-06, 03:25 PM I ordered from Crutchfield this morning. Shipping Monday. They had 38 at the time. :D
I just looked at the Crutchfield site and did not see the 2807.
Also, anyone with this unit... Is it possible to display volume on a monitor with Component or HDMI when in 480P, 720P or 1080i?
Thanks,
JayMan...
magnolia in chicago also $1,099.
Anyone know if it will be available in silver when released?
YodaDad 03-20-06, 03:43 PM Matt, don't know, 999 was the "special sale price" they came up with. I didn't even try to bargain.
Blake, the 2807 will generate a series of sound pulses through each speaker sequentially, including the sub. By the way if you only have a 5.1 or 6.1 connect your surrounds to "surround" and not to "surround back"; like I did first time.
Hey YodaDad...
Any luck with the Audio?
I'm having the same problem myself...unreal!!!
timrh23 03-20-06, 08:33 PM 2807 is available at Crutchfield...you have to go to chat with a service person...he will give you a link immediately to order it...have fun:)
Big Mike 03-20-06, 08:44 PM magnolia in chicago also $1,099.

It is my understanding that Denon is dropping silver on all new receivers starting with the 2807.

sdjdguy 03-21-06, 08:22 AM Hi guys,
I just picked up the AVR-2807 at Tweeter in San Diego yesterday. The local Magnolia (Best Buy) didn't have it. So, check out Tweeter if you don't want to wait to order one from Crutchfield.
Heuristix 03-21-06, 12:32 PM I scanned this thread and couldn't find whether anybody has mentioned whether room equalization works on the analog inputs, as the forthcoming HK-640 will be able to do. The manual does not seem to address this either.
Newbie here, first post.
UPS just delivered my Denon AVR-2807 from Crutchfield. I haven't even taken it out of the box yet. My axiom M60's and QS8's are not due for another 3-4 weeks. Also, my Mirage S12 is backordered from Vanns. I only have a passive sub at the moment with some 100 watt surrounds. What would be the best way to hook up the passive sub? Or should I leave the amp in the box until I get some real speakers? I would like to get a head start and at least familiarize myself with the receiver. Dang, just like a kid with a new toy
grinwell 03-21-06, 03:40 PM The answer, gdaddy, is you should take it out, take lots of pictures, attach whatever speakers you got and post a detailed description along with the pictures ;)
sdurani 03-21-06, 04:03 PM What would be the best way to hook up the passive sub?On the receiver, set the front L/R speakers to LARGE. Run speaker wire from the L/R speakers outs to the passive sub. Run speaker wire from the passive sub to your L/R satellites.

Forgive me, but I'm not sure I understand this. The sub only has one set of (-) (+) inputs. Wouldn't this be a crossover between the L/R speaker outs of the receiver?
sdurani 03-21-06, 05:02 PM The sub only has one set of (-) (+) inputs.Wups, I thought it was a passive subwoofer from a sub/sat combo. Since it isn't, you're probably better off just connecting your speakers (no sub) until the powered sub arrives. No simple way to connect a passive sub without an outboard amp.

Are you sure?
Because I read this:
'The AVR-2807 is scheduled to be available in March 2006, in black or silver. '

It's an older Panasonic Sub "Theatre in a Box." I'll just wait on the Mirage S12 to arrive. I appreciate your help!

ABT Electronics also has it up on their website, on backorder though.
Update...
I'm making good progress setting up all my gear. I finally got all the settings correct for the audio to pass through properly.
As expected...the video is another story though.
I am not able to get my Comcast Motorola 6412's DVI to pass through the 2807's HDMI switch.
I have been able to pass Component Video with my Satellite box and my Oppo Dvd player is working with a DVI to HDMI cord.
Anyone able to get their Motorola 6412 Cable box to work with the HDMI Switch on the receiver?
Update #2
I just finished setting up all the components and had a chance to auto speaker setup.
I am using optical cables for sound from all componets
Cable: Could not get the HDMI to work (big surprise) so I used component with no noticable change in video quality. In fact, my non-HD channels look a lot better. The audio is nothing short of FANTASTIC! I should note that this opinion is coming from someone that was using a 14 year old Pioneer Surround receiver.
DVD: HDMI works great! Audio is again...FABULOUS!
Satellite: Component...looks much better then when I had it hooked up directly to my Samsung DLP. Upconversion must be working great! Optical cable for audio is FAB!
I have barely scratched the surface in what this baby can do. I have a LOT of reading and playing to do before I master the capabilities of this receiver. I am extremely pleased with this purchase!
YodaDad 03-21-06, 09:52 PM dq, sounds like you have had a fair amount more success than I. Also I was hoping to not have to buy a bunch of new (optical??) cables, and do everthing via HDMI.
I did manage to get the denon to output audio from the dvd via hdmi but only to L/R speakers (not sub, center or surrounds). I know they can get signals, as all worked during the room eq set up. Pg. 49 of the manual talks about setting up the video portion and then switches to audio. This is where I get lost. Anybody have any ideas???
Yoda...
If you have the audio/video setup correctly...but no sound???
You may need to adjust surround mode. I'm not at the unit right now so I can't say for sure what button to adjust on the front of the unit. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why my Satellite would not play audio...i replaced cables and everything. Of course it was something simple!
ellisr63 03-22-06, 01:19 AM How is the remote? I hope it is better than the 3806 ...that one sucked.
unsolvedmistere 03-22-06, 04:37 AM I purchased and set mine up today but didnt really have a chance to mess with it besides the auto room eq. So far, sounds good, but like I said - didnt put it through any serious tests. The remote is exactly the same as the 2805 (as far as I can tell). If anyone has specific questions, let me know. Right now, all my devices are patched through using component and out to the TV using HDMI. Just some info for you guys to chew on if you're curious.
Ouch... I know it's very early, but I am a bit concerned that no one apparently has actually been able to transmit both audio and video via HDMI.
Please guys I know it is time consuming to go thru that manual and really work out this receiver BUT PLEASE PLEASE more posts on thoughts concerning sound, good power? Maybe a comparison to the 3806 if anyone had listened to that...does it sound warm?, bright? I am using paradigm monitors fronts, cc370 center and adp370 surrounds-- thx!!
dlm10541 03-22-06, 10:30 AM Ouch... I know it's very early, but I am a bit concerned that no one apparently has actually been able to transmit both audio and video via HDMI.
I run 4 devices through a video processor via HDMI with HDMI audio and video to the 2807 and HDMI video only to my display. You can run audio to speakers or display-not both.
I have had little play time so I recommend carefully following the Advance Setup-Part 1 instructions starting on page 44.
Jason Priestley 03-22-06, 10:47 PM Argghhhhh. So I did the instant messenger thing on crutchfield at work this morning to ask about the denon 2807. Confirmed to me that they had it, free shipping was nice, as was no tax. Asked if I wanted to buy. I said I just need to speak to the wifey. Fiance said to hold off until she was done teaaching at 3. She called me then, went over it and she gave the green light. I called crutchfield and then they said it was SOLD OUT!!!!!!!AARRRGHHHH. They asked if i wanted to pre-order. They don't have any ETA as to when they will get their next batch but typically its a couple of weeks. They told me they had 20-30 in the morning. Now I'd be 3rd on the pre-order list....any other dealers out there that have it?

Jason, have you tried going to the official Denon website and typing in your zip code 90210 into the search engine to see if there are any local dealers?
Man Crutchfields is making some really good money, if they are selling 20-30 in one day. Seeing as how they only sell them for full MSRP unless they have one of their 10% combo deals going. And as for free shipping, when you are paying full MSRP, it's the least they can do. Personally, free shipping is not good enough that I would pay full MSRP from a internet source, nor would I pay full MSRP at a B&M. And with their volume of shipping per day, they probably get some real good preferred shipping rates. So they are not losing much on that end. Not to mention many people are in a big rush for things and they usually end up paying for one of the more premium/faster shipping options anyway, so a lot of times they don't even use the free shipping.
What are the main differences between the 3806 and the 2807 besides the 10W per channel, the HDCD decoding and $200? I know this won awards at CES, but what makes this so much different than the 3806 that is already available?
I think I will have a tough time deciding between the 2807, the 3806, and the 4306.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Justin
If you compare the specs, you will find out that Denon 2807
1) Does not have True 24-bit/192-kHz Digital Input Capability (Denon Link & 1394)
2) Has inferior DACs (Analog Devices versus Burr Brown)
3) Has inferior ADC sampling rate
4) Does not have AL24 processing
5) Does not have HDCD decoder
So by all logic, 3806 should have better sound especially if you have Denon player that supports Denon Link.

The 3806 does not have i-Link/IEEE-1394, it only has Denon Link.
You don't get the i-Link/IEEE-1394 features in a Denon AVR, until you get up to the 4806.

It does have AL24 p4rocessing
Does anyone know anything about whether the 2807 has any handshake issues with STB's yet?
would the 2807 have enough power to handle the monitor 9's for fronts version 4 and the ADP 370 vs 4surround and the 2200 sub and paradigm atom vs 3 for backs??

Not according to specs. Perhaps, it does not have it on all channels. As I mentioned, I was comparing specs.
Inferior DACs.... please elaborate... I tusselled with getting the 4306, but I'm using the receiver as a pre/pro.
3806 and better Denon's all use Burr Brown DACs. Top of the line Pioneer Elite and new Elite also use Burr Brown. 2807 uses Analog Devices DACs. If you are using your receiver as pre/pro then DACs may be important. For example, if you connect your player via Denon link (or iLink with Pioneer), you will be using receiver's DACs to convert the signal. Burr Brown is *supposed* to be better than Analog Devices. Whether you will be able to hear the difference is a completely different issue. The majority of people would be hard pressed to discern DACs in blind testing.

I copied that entry verbatim from the specs. Yes, I am aware that Denon link is not the same as iLink, and apparently not as good as iLink (e.g., Pioneer) as far as jitter. Looking at the specs, 3806 should have iLink; however, I'll take your word that it doesn't.

That's the question... is Burr Brown DAC's worth an additional 900 bucks list price for the 4306?.... I dont think so.
The more interesting comparison would be between 3806 and 2807, not 4306 and 2807. Just like 4306, 3806 also uses Burr Brown DACs, an is a lot closer in price to 2807. I take it you are not so thrilled with 3806 because its HDMI inputs are half-baked?
My take on HDMI input switching on the receiver side is probably different than yours. I believe that switching HDMI inputs on the receiver and using only one HDMI connection to the TV is a really bad idea. I would never want to connect a TV set-top box, DVD player, and HTPC to the same HDMI input on the TV. Why is this? Because, IMO, all three sources should be set-up differently using separate inputs on the TV. Watching TV programming requires completely different picture parameters than watching DVD movies. If you use only one input on your TV for all your video sources then you are forced to compromise on picture quality. It's certainly convenient to control everything through the receiver but I am not willing to put up with such a compromise. I prefer to configure inputs on my TV so that they correspond to various sources as best as possible.
dtsfanoh 03-23-06, 03:56 PM The more interesting comparison would be between 3806 and 2807, not 4306 and 2807.
I understand your feelings but how many TVs have 3-4 HDMI inputs? My Mits projector has ONE.

I agree to a point but many sets do not have individual adjustments on each input.
That that is why I use a video processor among other reasons. Four devices fed HDMI to processor, HDMI to AVR-2807 and HDMI video only to the display. My display has been calibrated ( all inputs are the same) and I can now adjust each input device on the processor
Looking at the specs, 3806 should have iLink; however, I'll take your word that it doesn't.
No they do not show that it should have it.
Look closely at the specs again at the Denon website, and you will see that it clearly lacks the green "check" mark for iLink/IEEE394, and that it only has a "-" next to it. Now look at the specs for a 4806 or 5805, and you will see that they both do indeed have the green "check" mark for it. If there is no green "check" mark and only a "-", that means it does not have it.

I see. Thanks for the correction. There is green check mark next to:
True 24-bit/192-kHz Digital Input Capability (Denon Link & 1394)
But there is a "-" next to:
IEEE-1394 Digital Audio Input/Output
Their notion of 1394 (Denon Link & 1394) is not what the rest of the industry subscribes to.

The sub won't pose any issues since it is active but the rest of your question also requires knowledge of your room and listening preferences. It is also affected by whether you like to set your speakers to large or small and the crossover frequency you use.
Perhaps you can start by telling us what your current receiver is and if it is adequately powered for your setup.
Kaanage...I do not have a receiver yet and my room is 15 by 21 ft.--it will be used exclusively for movies.

Not according to specs on Denon's site.

However, as I mentioned before, I doubt that the choice of DACs will result in audible sound difference for the majority of listeners
grinwell 03-23-06, 09:40 PM artimp, this receiver should provide plenty of power for your set up.
True Fan 03-23-06, 10:29 PM guys, please HELP...I am a stupid girl :o and need to know if the 2807 has enough POWER to handle the paradigm monitor 9's in front, adp370's sides, atom bookshlfs back and a 2200 paradigm sub??????
Hi artimp, congratulations on your persistence (many repeated posts before somebody answered) and your nice trick (I am a stupid girl) finally yielded some responds ;) ....
Anyway, I have Denon 3803 which like 2807 provides 110W/ch and it's feeding Paradigms: M9 (v 2.0), CC370, Mini Monitors (v 2.0), Mini Monitors (ZONE2), PS-1200 sub and (soon) Carver's Dominator D-12 sub.
It works fine, but as for the sound quality I am not completely satisfied, and sometimes I have the inside feeling that the external additional amp would improve SQ. But I did not perform yet the full calibration (just bought SPL meter) so after that is done, I can tell a little more perhaps.
And, of course, electronically/functionally-wise 2807 is quite different (improved) animal than 3803.
4) Does not have AL24 processinG
I wouldnt go by the webpage. Yes there is a dash next to AL24 but if you look at the picture of the thing and the list of features they both have AL24 logos. Denon's webmasters are notorious for misinformation.
Page 8 of the manual also points out an al24 indicator and it has the definition of what al24 is on page 68
The problem is it doesn't say if its the front 2 channels only or all 7
Jason Priestley 03-23-06, 10:45 PM so are the HDMI capabilities of the 4306 and 2807 exactly the same but the 4306 has better sound quality? Also i hear the 4306 can do firmware updates while the 2807 cannot. Any opinions.
By the way, i'm the guy who got hosed when he called back crutchfield and they were sold out. I had gone to the BB/Magnolia over the weekend and they said they are not carrying the 2807 and it had to be a special order. They would not get it until the 14th of April (grrrr). I live near NYC. J&R (pretty big i believe) and B&H photo video did not have it. Plus the local dealers by me in NJ did not have it. Isn't denon's us headquarter's in NJ? Arrrgggghhh.
The 4306 and 2807 does bring up a good debate. Hypothetically, if I could get the 4306 down in price to 1600 or 1700 would the 4306 be a much better value than the 2807? At what price is the 4306 the obvious choice (i mean besides the retail of the 2807). Is it worth $200 more, 300 more, 400 more, 500 more?
Finally, with regards to crutchfield, as an employee at a certain large institutional firm I get some 10% credit thing up to $100. Tax is 6% in NJ. Right there, that's technically about a 14% discount and the shipping was 2-3 days. Seemed like an ok deal to me. Or do you guys think I can do much better?
I've read through this entire thread and am still totally confused on HDMI capabilities, specifically the difference between the 3806 and the 2807. My main concern is how I'll be able to run a hi-def DVD player (either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray) through either receiver.
My understanding is that the 2807 will allow me to do this; will the 3806? Would I eventually be able to run HDMI out from my hi-def DVD into the receiver and then out to my display through either a HDMI-DVI converter cable or component cable? I see the 3806 will not upconvert analog video to HDMI - but will it accept HDMI in and transmit full resolution to my display via either HDMI-DVI or component?
Sorry if these questions seem a little unfocused, but I'm completely confused here on the pros and cons of these two receivers with regards to their "future-proofing" related to hi-def DVD in particular. Thanks for any clarification.
ellisr63 03-23-06, 11:08 PM I see the 3806 will not upconvert analog video to HDMI - but will it accept HDMI in and transmit full resolution to my display via either HDMI-DVI or component?
The 3806 DOES upconvert component to HDMI. I only run component from all my components to the 3806 and only run a S video (for the on screen menu) and HDMI to my projector. But it DOESN'T upscale to HDMI from component.

OK, got it. Do both pass 1080p analog-to-analog and/or digital-to-digital (i.e., if I run component in at 1080p will it send 1080p to my display and/or 1080p in via HDMI and then HDMI out to my display?)
Really, my problem (as I perceive it to be) is that my HDTV has only one DVI and three component inputs. I'm looking to see which receiver 3806 vs. 2807 will be able to run hi-def DVD to my display, and how I can do that...

Don't go by what Crutchfields says, go by what Denon says. And again, look for the green "check" mark. Because when you get down to the Burr-Brown area for the 2807, 3806 and 4806, all you will see is a "-" and not a green "check" mark for the 2807. So that means no on the Burr-Brown. And in fact, what you will see for the 2807, that it has that 24-bit/192-kHz DACs - Analog Devices chip, and not the Burr-Brown.

I don't have the 2807 yet, but here is what I believe to be the case from the manual. All analong inputs, such as component, can be upconverted to HDMI. It will NOT upscale the signal, just pass it through. It doesn't appear that it will upconvert any 1080P inputs at all. In order to get it out via HDMI it needs to be input via HDMI.
dlm10541 03-24-06, 09:17 AM I believe 1080P is passed only over HDMI. This means run HDMI-DVI cable for video. Will your display accept 1080P in? To my knowledge only the HP DLP will currently.

FYI, my brand new Panasonic TH-50PX60U plasma will accept 1080p input via HDMI. I believe the Sony XBR rear projection sets will as well.
I believe 1080P is passed only over HDMI. This means run HDMI-DVI cable for video. Will your display accept 1080P in? To my knowledge only the HP DLP will currently.
My display will only accept 720p/1080i, so my understanding is that it will downscale the 1080p when I feed it in.
So, given all the info, the 2807 will pass 1080p and the 3806 does not. Therefore, if I'm planning on being as "future-proofed" as I can with regard to hi-def DVD, the 2807 is the only choice between it and the 3806 (assuming I run video through the receiver) - right?
dlm10541 03-24-06, 01:16 PM FYI, my brand new Panasonic TH-50PX60U plasma will accept 1080p input via HDMI. Even the first HD-dvd players are 1080i--not sure if Blu-raywill be 1080P at intro.
Be careful even most 1080P native displays do not accept 1080P inputs.

snowblade2 03-24-06, 07:38 PM Got my 2807, along with a Sanus stand and a few other goodies from Crutchfield the other day. After a couple of sleepless days (I work the night shift), I've now got everything set up, calibrated and controlled with a Harmony 880. I gotta say, I'm happier than Al Bundy with a stack of Big 'Uns. The sound quality is incredible! Granted I'm not running audiophile speakers (Bose 301s for surrounds, a VCS-10 for center and a Sony 100-watt sub), but the improvement over my old JVC receiver is VERY noticeable. I had to tweak the Audyssey setup a little bit to get some bass, but once that was done I felt like I finally had a decent setup. The only complaint I'd have is that switching between components causes a momentary green flash on my screen (I've got everything running through one HDMI cable to the tv), but I can certainly live with that.

Wonder if that green flash might not be a normal thing. The switching could be triggering a scan for resolution, or something. Congrats on the new toy, keep us posted on the 2807.

How did you tweak the audyssey setup for your bass? I set mine up and while the "surround" movie experience was awesome, bass was less than exciting. I realize it's "smoothing" it out, and that's great. I have an HK-635 to compare to and the subwoofer equalization there sounds spot on. With the 2807 it sounded really thin. I demoed the Monster's Inc trailer on Toy Story 2 and those awesome knocks at the start with the really low bass info were completely eqed out.. same with the great subsonic material during the opening Toy Story 2 scene as buzz is flying around. I'm really only concerned about the low low end that I don't want eqed out as it needs a boost to be noticed given our insensitivity to those lower frequencies. Any ideas..?

Does or can the 2807 display volume on your monitor? This receiver is rising to the top of my list quickly.

It is supposed to but I am having trouble with the OSD. The manual says that over HDMI OSD works on set -up or when display is press on remote. Neither works for me.
Snowblade I believe the flashing you see is caused by HDMI/HDCP handshaking as you change inputs. This is normal

my friends father owns a specialty store and was being kind to me :)
sdwyatt 03-25-06, 06:58 PM Rec'd my 2807 from Crutchfeld yesterday and was reading through the manual prior to setup. I plan to use it to drive a 7.1 setup in a media room with 2 sets of rear surrounds. It will also drive a "B" pair of front speakers in a different room. I was a bit confused when reading the set up procedures referencing ZONE2. I assume ZONE2 is only relevant if separate components are powered not just speakers. Does anybody with a similar config as above have any advise on setup?

Well after calling another Best Buy store and speaking to one of the guys in the Magnolia there he said that he had been to a nearby Magnolia store (not one inside a BB), and they had one on display, but the earliest they would have one in the BB stores was April 16th. So I Googled for the local Magnolia's and found the one the BB guy was talking about and I called them and all they have is the display model there . The guy I talked to checked his computer and said he was going to their San Francisco store tonight and would pick one up for me there, since they have them in stock ($999). I'll be picking it up in the morning at their San Ramon store!. Totally stoked! :D

dlm10541 03-26-06, 05:08 AM Look in the manual. In the appendix there is a chart. A footnote says 1080P is not handled.
I hope I am wrong but I do not want to see disappointed people if I am not. I saw same thing as you when shopping and called Denon. That is why I waited for 2807. That plus reported other HDMI problems
snowblade2 03-26-06, 08:00 AM To answer some questions:
The way I tweaked the sub was to set the crossover frequency at 100 mhz (under the speaker setup menu). Any higher than that and the sound quality dropped. I don't know if this means I'm no longer running under the Audyssey setting, but the sound is still incredible. I tested it with various scenes from Revenge of the Sith and got the floor to shake a little
Yes, the volume is displayed onscreen. I initially had some problems getting it to display, but was able to get it to show up by accessing the menus from the receiver itself (the remote can call up the OSD now, but only after I initially got it to show up). Try pressing the setup button on the remote.
I'm glad to hear the flashing is normal...I was worried for a minute there :)
It's a bummer to hear Crutchfield's out, but from what I've experienced so far with this receiver, it's well worth the wait. Having seen how easy it was to do the auto setup and eq (even though I had to switch the wiring on my speakers a few times before it stopped saying they were out of phase), I'm blown away by the improvement in sound.
dlm10541 03-26-06, 08:16 AM Snowblade
Are you ouputting HDMI? I am and have done the OSD setup however still not getting OSD even when I press set-up or when I press display. I am waiting til Monday to call Denon.
I have not changed anything yet but I found the sound to be better (to me) than the Audessey setup. I agree it is lacking in bass.
Look in the manual. In the appendix there is a chart. A footnote says 1080P is not handled.
That's referring to the fact it can't convert an analog 1080p signal to HDMI.
dlm10541 03-26-06, 09:49 AM Jase
I am not trying to argue the point with you. I am not sure what is correct. However I took the word of Tech Support and waited.
There is an apparent discrepancy between the manuals/datasheets and what Tech support says. This is common unfotuneatly. I assume you have the 3806 and can confirm its performance first hand. If so I stand corrected
I am simply trying to tell people to be careful. If a feature is important to you then reasearch carefully. You are doing a dis-service to forum users to state something as fact without definitive proof.
Ninjakettle 03-26-06, 10:02 AM folks,
Can someone tell me if the 2807 is capable of upconverting from s-video/composite to Component out?
I know from reading that it does this over HDMI - but i don't have HDMI input on my projector and i'd like to have only one cable (Component) running to it.
cheers
US Tech Support may well be wrong. Denon USA's site states 1080P HDMI switching, so does Denon UK, Denon Germany and Denon Japan. Also been mentioned on other sites. These units have been around for a little while now so if it didn't have this feature I'd presume they'd have removed it from all their website literature. Here's a couple of links.

FWIW I have the A1XV (5805) which doesn't have 1080P HDMI switching. Unfortunately, it needs an upgrade for that.
Can someone tell me if the 2807 is capable of upconverting from s-video/composite to Component out?
Yes, it has this feature.
YodaDad 03-26-06, 10:51 AM A little story which relates to the 2807.
I decided to upgrade to the 2807, a Samsung 6768 (1080P 67 inches; yup bigger is better) and a low budget Toshiba dvd (with HDMI out). I bought the Sammy via internet, saved $1500, but developed a small ulcer dealing with "customer service" pelple to actually get it to shipping company.
The 2807 I got from Magnolia in Bellevue WA. Good price: 999. However, like many getting the video from dvd to 2807 to monitor while simultaneously getting the audio from dvd to 2807 to speakers seemed impossible. The guy at Magnolia called me back after hours and spent about 30 minutes with me and like magic: everything works.
The moral: sometimes, especially in the case of the 2807, unless you're an uber-geek, brick and mortar purchases have their place and advantages.
Next up: Blu-ray vs. HDDVD.
Anyone using the 2807 with paradigm speakers? Particularly monitor 5s. I have monitor 5s and have heard them on a marantz sr7500 and they sound awsome but it doesn't have close to the amount of features the 2807 does for the same money.
I might have to see if my local denon dealer will let me borrow one for a few days. It kind of scares me that you can now buy denon products inside a best buy. Does that bother anyone else?
egiles7 03-26-06, 06:15 PM Do we have any idea as to when the 2807 will be released?
I had been waiting for the 2807 since I read the CES reviews. I have been scanning the web looking for anyone selling or taking pre-orders. Then I read a post here that said that Denon had posted the unit on the website. Sure enough, not only did I find a seller, but one that had six in stock (as of 3/24). I am now the proud owner of a Denon AVR 2807. Since I ended up buying my NEC from a seller recommended here I will return the favor for anyone looking for the 2807 now. ZAP Audio (714) 526-2154 ask for Sanjay (owner). I also ended up getting a great deal on the speakers as well. Not trying to spam or anything, but I know these are hard to come by (or were) and he's an authorized Denon reseller with 2807s in stock. I'll let you know when I get the whole setup installed and running. I can't wait.

Even the first HD-dvd players are 1080i--not sure if Blu-raywill be 1080P at intro.
Be careful even most 1080P native displays do not accept 1080P inputs.
You are mistaken, at least if the owner's manual is to be believed. It clearly states that it will accept a 1080p input via HDMI.

Good at least Panasonic is doing it right. I was amazed that Sony, Samsung and JVC introduced 1080P native RPTVs that did not accept 1080P in
mziegler 03-27-06, 02:23 PM Here's the system:
Denon 2807 Receiver
Panasonic TH-50PX60U plasma (two HDMI slots)
Scientific Atlanta 8300HD cable box
Denon 2910 DVD
Polk RM 7500 speakers
I guess I want to go from the cable box to the receiver via HDMI (but I hear there is a problem with this), so I will use component cable from box to receiver, and attach the plasma and DVD to the receiver via HDMI.
With this set-up will I be limited to my Polk speakers? For casual watching I like to use the speakers on the Plasma. If I am limited to the Polk, is there a better configuration?
I'm actually pretty intelligent, but not when it comes to some of these issues, so I need things spelled out.
Thank you in advance for any help/insight you can offer.

Set-up allows audio to speakers or display not both. I guess you could go into the menu and change it but that would be a pain. Too bad they don't have an audio toggle on the remote

I talked to customer service at Denon today. I was told that this will not work, that you need to use component from cable box to receiver. This was confirmed by a forum user (sdjdguy). The tech said that the problem was that Scientific Atlanta had not updated its driver. He also said that the difference between component and HDMI was very slight (consider the souce--I'm only the messenger here).
Yeah, I was checking out the SA8300HD, and the fellow at the store said that many of the units were coming back because of sync problems between audio and video when using HDMI.
Jason Priestley 03-27-06, 08:00 PM Darnnn!!!! So should I go the 4306 route? Any problems with the 4306? I know we can't discuss price but if I'm getting over 25+% should I go for it? I'm also curious about the sound quality of the 2807 being lower than the 3806....hmmm....
AV Land 03-27-06, 08:41 PM Yeah, I was checking out the SA8300HD, and the fellow at the store said that many of the units were coming back because of sync problems between audio and video when using HDMI.
Which units were being sent back, the 2807 or the SA8300HD? If it's the SA8300HD, I can say that I've been using it for 4 months with no sync problem except on some occasions (mostly FOX HD and it's not the cable box fault).
I just got mine for $930
How / where did you manage to get one for that price?
AV Land 03-27-06, 08:58 PM I currently have a Denon AVR2800 and am very pleased with it as far as music quality is concerned (using Paradigm speakers). Of course, having recently acquired an HDTV set this receiver does not fit the bill anymore (no component or HDMI inputs/outputs) so I decided to order the 2807. However, I'd like to make sure that I do not lose the musical quality of my 2800. So can anybody comment on their experience on the musicality side of the 2807?
Thanks,
rothlike 03-27-06, 09:25 PM Has anyone been able to get their 2807 to work with a SA8300HD via HDMI ?
I got it to "work" but anytime I switched inputs, and then return, the SA8300HD says the TV is not HDCP compliant (it is though) and will not display through HDMI. I have to switch off the SA and then my TV, then turn the TV back on, followed by the SA for it to recognize the HDCP in the TV. Switching inputs and back and the SA would not recognize the TV's HDCP again. Too much hassle so I bagged the HDMI hookup and went component. I assumed it was a handshaking issue with the TV which I have heard is a common issue with the Toshiba 34HF85. Looks and sounds fine through component.

(and it's not the cable box fault).
Yes it is, because not all 8300's have the updated firmware that allows them to work with HDMI repeaters properly. And if someone has one with the old firmware, it's most definitely the fault of the 8300 that it's not working properly with a receiver with HDMI switching.

jgriffin 03-28-06, 01:12 PM Any opinions from those who have this receiver as to the video upconversion capabilities? I, like others, am trying to decide between the 3806 and 2807. I have a Panasonic AE900 and wonder if the 2807 may do a better job with 480i sources than the Panasonic.

True Fan 03-28-06, 05:01 PM Hi
I have to admit that I also got very excited upon the news of this (potentally) wonderful 2807 receiver with HDMI upconversion and so on.
Having older 3803 receiver, Paradigm Monitors surround setup, Pioneer 42" plasma HD w/HDMI , Denon DVD 2200 and SA 8300H, I thought the same way as almost everybody here: how wonderful it would be to connect plasma with receiver with just one HDMI cable. Right ? WRONG !!!
After hearing all these reports about incompatibilities in HDMI betw. SA83000 and 2807 and then reading that people decide to feed the HD signal with component instead, but still using HDMI for DVD, I realized it's all MADNESS !!!
Why would you feed BETTER (HD) picture with WORSE cable and the WORSE (DVD) picture with the BETTER cable ?
So, my personal solution is ... staying with the setup I have:
1) SA8300HD connected with plasma directly through HDMI and the extra audio
dig-coax connection w/3803.
2) Univ player (DVD, SACD, DVD-A) through component with 3803 (and all possible audio cables) and then 3803 through component w/plasma
CONS: So I have 2 cables going into my plasma and have to switch the TV's inputs with the remote ( and how tought it really is, huh ???)
PROS:
- the HD (cable) picture is fed through the HD-quality cable and it shows !
- the DVD picture is fed throug the component cable, which is effecient enough
( in a meanwhile we are all speculating about upcoming HD DVD ...)
- I don't even need to use the receiver in order to watch HD/SD TV, which greatly benefits my wife and daughter (they don't really know how to operate properly 3803)
- for the TV the sound is played through the TV's speakers (for news, etc.) and I can always choose to play it through my audio system at the same time or separately.
- heck, I can even watch the movie/game/news broadcast (with the low volume on TV) and listen to my favorite CD/SACD/DVD-A at the same time (which I love !)
So I keept what i have, enjoy, HD-quality picture, don't get frustrated by SA/cable industry inability to follow the same HDMI standards and ... wait until the dust settles over the HD DVD and HDMI formats wars .
And - forgot to mention - keep my $1100 intact, maybe I could upgrade my Digms in the meanwhile ???
Which units were being sent back, the 2807 or the SA8300HD? If it's the SA8300HD, I can say that I've been using it for 4 months with no sync problem except on some occasions (mostly FOX HD and it's not the cable box fault).
Yes, the SA8300HD units were coming back with sync problems. But, it really is all about what monitor you are using. It depends on how quickly the monitor can digitize the information. And the problem is specific to the HDMI outputs on the cable box.

I don't know (how can I tell)? But as 'Johnla' stated the problem is with the 8300 and HDMI repeaters whis is not my case since I'm hooked up directly to my Toshiba 56HM195 (I currently have an AVR2800 which does not have HDMI and still waiting to receive my 2807).

YodaDad 03-28-06, 09:56 PM Back to the audio for a moment. Several of you have asked to compare the 2807 to various other Denon avrs. I think we'd have a tough time getting two of us together listening to more than two different systems to come up with a "best" consensus. That being said, here is my $.02.
I replaced an old Denon avr 3200 with the 2807, and the sound difference via my big ol Klipsch speakers was significant. I like a big sound: Rush, Savatage, Boston. But even 6-string classical CD was much better through the 2807. How would a 4306, 5805 or any other avr sound? Probably great. :D But unless you're willing to buy 2 avrs, hook them up and listen to the same music over and over with the same everything else CD, room, speakers; how will you really compare?
Jason Priestley 03-28-06, 11:18 PM Have you head any problems with power on the 2807? I'm wondering if when all 7 channels driven (i plan to bi-amp) if I will be straining the system. Wondering if i should get the 4306. In terms of the HDMI capabilities? is the 2807 and 4306 identical (i know the 4306 has 3 inputs vs 2 on the 2807).
DOCDETROIT 03-29-06, 07:50 AM I have just redone my theater room and I have gotten a good bit of info from this forum. My dilema is ,I have a friend that is a denon dealer and I bought a 3806 which I have not taken out of the box. I just have not had the time to set it up and was kind of waiting to see what was happening with the 2807. Originally he told me he would not have one until mid april but received 4 of them yesterday. I can swap the 3806 for the 2807 and save $140. I am anticipating using the HDMI switching which is the next generation in the 2807. Sound wise I would expect them to be very close. What would you do?
ask to take them both home then compare the sound between the 2 then report back to us :D
comparing power and general sound of each trying to set them the same so they are even at the starting gate :)
Jamdonutz 03-29-06, 08:25 AM G'day Everyone
I am a newbie to the forum after stumbling across it in my search for a solution to my dilema....I have tried to read and follow this thread which has some great info but most of it is well over my head....
So the quickest solution to my problem is to pose this question to all you Home Theatre pros out there:
I have the following gear;
Panasonic 42" HD Plasma (PV500A) with HDMI input
Humax HD7000 HD STB with DVI output
Panasonic DVD Recorder component video output
Cable TV Box with SCART output
JBL Speakers and active Sub
PS2
Currently using a bunky old Yamaha HTR-5540 Receiver which has served me well but is now totally obsolete so I need to update to get the best out of the Plasma...
Do I get the Denon AVR-2807 or the Yamaha RX-V1600?? Both are similar price, features and performance on paper...what are your reasons for/against either of these to receivers??
Thanks in advance :)
mattbrown 03-29-06, 09:04 AM Ordered my 2807 from Crutchfield last night over the phone. It's out for delivery today!! Amazing. Can't wait to get home and start playing. I'm replacing a 10 year old Sony PL receiver with external Technics 5.1 DTS/DD decoder. Doesn't even have S-Vid switching (been using a vid switch box for component HD and DVD inputs)
I expect the difference to be night and day, even with my so so Yamaha tower speakers.

Hey guys. I purchased the Full Orbaudio Mod2 7.1 surround and was wondering if this reciever was/is overkill. I am using the GREAT Infocus 61" DLP as my TV which has HDMI input.
So what do yall think? A match made in heaven or should I look elsewhere?

YodaDad,
I also have an older Denon AVR3200 and have been looking to upgrade and am seriously considering the 2807. Do you think that the 2807 sounds better than the 3200 with movies, dolby digital, music, etc?

YodaDad 03-29-06, 11:24 PM Jay, like I said, huge difference with both CDs and DVDs with respect to sound. Never set the 2807 up with my new Samsung 6768, so can't comment on the difference in video, but ya gotta assume that when HDMI actually sends video through (I had kinda a tough time getting all the parts to talk to one another) the 2807 must be better here as well.
If I had it to do over again, I'd again get the 2807, and I'd be willing to spend 500 more than the 999 it cost.
Good luck.
RufusAZ 03-30-06, 12:02 AM Hello all.. First post.
Well, I will break this up into 2 areas:
Video
Well, the guy at Tweeter told me before I bought the receiver that the issues with the 8300hd had been resolved and that the 2807 and the Yamaha 2600 were the only receivers that HDMI switching actually worked with. It did not work. I got the HDMI blocked message from the cable box. So, now I use HDMI in and out for the DVD player but have to go component out from the cable box into the receiver and then use the one HDMI out to go the back of my Mits DLP. Based on other member's posts I'm not the only one. I wrote my cable company (Cox Cable) and have yet to get a reply. I tried to call them and they didn't even know what HDMI was. I guess it's not the end of the world for now.

I read another post where people were describing a lack of bass. I would like advice on this too. The auto config set my mains as large and the rest as small. My mains are JBL E80's. I had read somplace else that you should set all your speakers at small then set the crossover freq to 80-85Hz. I could use some advice. Has anyone else tweeked their bass?
Also, when doing th auto config it said that most of my speakers were out of phase but i checked 3 times and they were not. The instructions say that this could happend and to just hit skip. Anyone else get this?
Chris in SD 03-30-06, 02:24 AM What version is your 8300? Mine is 1.87.16.1. The 8300 issues HAVE been fixed, but whether or not your cable provider is USING the fixed firmware is a whole other issue.
mattbrown 03-30-06, 07:38 AM RufusAZ,
I set mine up last night and let the auto setup do everything. I admit that there was not much bass. It was late so I didn't play too much, but the receiver had set my mains to large and set the crossover around 80hz I think. The sub was also set to "Sub". I changed that to "Sub/Main" and cranked up some crossover settings. Got much better results, but like I said, it was late. Wife and kid are going to visit grandma for the night, so its open season for tweaking after work today!
Matt
RufusAZ 03-30-06, 07:50 AM Chris,
N00b question but how do I check the software version? I explored settings and couldn't find it.
Mattbrown,
I'm interested in seeing the results of your and other peoples audio tweeks. I know speakers are going to make a big difference but it could still give me some ideas.
Jake Sm 03-30-06, 08:09 AM Why would you feed BETTER (HD) picture with WORSE cable and the WORSE (DVD) picture with the BETTER cable ?
There is an assumption that letting the source do the upconversion rather than the display is always better because it's digital, but I have often found that pictures look better with component rather than HDMI, so if HDMI doesn't interface between some equipment, you may not be missing anything with regards to picture quality. IMO.
wstanko 03-30-06, 08:20 AM I don't have mine yet, but I have been lurking here and have an opinion about bass. My neighbor's son comes in with his "bass a thump'n" and although he thinks it's great, it is deformed music. My brother-in-law has his system set to "thump" away every few seconds, he thinks it sounds great, it also is deformed.
My present Denon 1602 is not auto setup, but I carefully dialed in the parameters with a meter, making sure that constant thumping was not the rule of the land. IMHO, deep booming bass should be present when it was recorded as such and not forced to happen just for the sake of wanting the room to shake. Maybe I will feel differently after I run my 2807 in auto setup, but I doubt it.
mziegler 03-30-06, 09:07 AM I was on the phone with customer service at Scientific Atlanta. I was told (you can decide for yourself if my source is reliable) that each cable company implements the firmware, which means it is a cable company issue.
I also exchanged email with an engineer at Scientific Atlanta. Here's what he had to say about HDMI vs. component (please note what I see as a contradiction): "Any digital connection, not just HDMI, between the settop and display will give you top quality video because there is theoretically zero degradation in a digital link. That said, component connections will be just fine too. I do not think the difference will be noticeable." So much for theory.
I use Time Warner in Torrance, CA. I have not set up my system yet, since I'm waiting for HDMI cables and Denon 2910 DVD to arrive (pretty good deal on DVD via costo.com, btw).
Question: once I set up the system, do I have to get into various menus on my 2870, plasma, cable box, etc.?
Another question: I have been unable to access firmware versions on my cable box. Any idea how? The post above from Chris in SD doesn't seem to have the right firmware--the version for the 2807 is, I believe from what I have read, 1.1. Supposedly, the problem with the cable box is that it uses 1.0.
Chris in SD 03-30-06, 10:11 AM I was referring to the SARA firmware version on my 8300HD, not the HDMI version.
To find your SARA version ( if your cableco uses SARA and not Passport ) hold down Select on the box, when the mail icon lights up, hit info.
The 8300HD can be brought up to a SARA version which supports HDMI repeaters/switchers, such as Denon receivers. Again, if the cable company "feels like it".
mattbrown: post your settings when you get them, mine is coming this week. I am sure I will be in the mood for tweaking, but I am in the same boat. I am using a HK 525 which I love, not sure if I want to sell it yet.
Denon 2807 owners (will be one soon) : Why didn't Denon use the 192bit 24 Dacs in this unit, my current HK uses these and it is 4 years old, I am surprised they went this route, I don't think it is a real big deal on HT playback but on audio playback it could make a difference. Anyone have a chance to listen to music on this puppy yet?
mziegler 03-30-06, 10:28 AM I'm pretty sure the TW system is passport (the pre-HD box was passport). Getting through to the right customer service people at Denon and Scientific Atlanta was difficult and time consuming. I can only imagine what a pain it will be with TW.

They did. Just that they're Analog Devices DAC's rather than Burr Brown's. The ADC's are 24bit/96Khz. :)
mattbrown 03-30-06, 12:23 PM Garman,
Will do. There was too much going on last night to really concentrate. Tonight is a different story. I think I will rerun all the auto setup and write down the results. I'll tweak after listening to various music and compare.
Should I use my old CD player with analog outs or play the CDs through the DVD player? Probably DVD player right, and use the Digital Coax to transmit to the receiver? Last night I used the CD player (just because I already had 5 discs in it), Before I messed around with the receiver's settings, there was nothing coming out of my HSU STF-2 sub. Nothing, I put my hand under the speaker to check. I thought it wasn't plugged in, but the test tones proved otherwise.
Ya know, wife and kid were stomping around upstairs during the auto setup. Maybe the mic picked the LFE up from that during the speaker test and set my speakers to Large?
Another thing, it kept reporting and "Out of Phase L/R" warning. I checked twice. Speakers were hooked up right. The manual says this may happen and to ignore it if things are wired correctly. My friend is borrowing my Avia and SPL meter, so it's up to me and my ear tonight.

That's a B.S. - difference is very much noticeable, although not striking. For some time I had my 8300HD hooked up directly with my PIONEER plasma through 2 cables: HDMI and component on 2 different inputs. For me, the picture fed through HDMI was significantly BETTER for HD when compared with component output. As for the SD, the situation was quite opposite.
Another aspect: this damn thing (8300HD) was blocking my VHS programmed recordings (connected with it through composite) , especially when the TV was swwitched off (again, HDMI cable coming from 8300). It would come with this irritating HDCP error message, and that's the only thing which would be recorded on tape after minute or so of initally proper recording. When I called my cable's (COX in VA) tech suppport they told me that they DON'T SUPPORT (!) HDMI connection on the 8300HD and they cannot help me with any related problem or even comment if I am actually USING the HDMI connection !!!
Great policy, isn't it ?
Hello all.. First post.

Also, when doing th auto config it said that most of my speakers were out of phase but i checked 3 times and they were not. The instructions say that this could happend and to just hit skip. Anyone else get this?
According to the MultEQxt FAQ:
"MultEQxt detects absolute phase for each loudspeaker. Some loudspeakers are designed with intentional phase reversals in the drivers in order to address crossover problems. MultEQxt will detect that and report an error. The best course of action is to simply check the wiring and press “Skip” if it is correct. MultEQxt simply reports a possible wiring reversal, it does not automatically switch the phase."
I'm too new to be allowed to post links directly but you can find this FAQ (amongst many other useful publications) on the 2807's homepage at Denon's USA website.

This is not encouraging. I have the same handshake issue as you, using the 8300HD box from Cox Cable in San Diego. I haven't even wasted my time contacting them about this, since they are unable to get even the basic customer service issues right (i.e., turning off your service the day you requested rather than two days early), much less something more complex like this. I shudder at the thought of wasting a lot of time calling or writing to Cox about this, only to be ignored or lied to.
For all you Cox 8300HD subscribers, what can be done about this? Do we just have to live with using component connections?
stubeeef 03-30-06, 07:22 PM Is the only problem with the HDMI interface with cable boxes?
Sorry but this thread is a blur with 3 others and it seems that the only issue is HDMI handling of some cable boxes, is that correct?
I am a re-entrant to Audophile land after a 20yr break (saved me a hundred grand probably! :p ). Wanting a good bang for the $$ HT in the 7k total range I, like many, have awaited this Denon. I am also looking at the Outlaw 1070, 990+775/Yam 2600/Onkyo SR803.
Will be giving a trial to Orb Mod2 7.1 and am told they are effecient speakers.
Anyway, if there are too many HDMI issues I may go low under the radar with a decent inexpensive receiver using component connection.
Thanks
brooksc 03-30-06, 11:25 PM I'm interested whether the 2807 will work with forthcoming HD-DVD players. It doesn't support HDMI 1.3 so it doesn't support Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD or DTS' DTS-HD - but some HD-DVD players will send the discrete audio channels as PCM uncompressed over HDMI.
Does the 2807 support receiving 5.1 to 7.1 audio as PCM over HDMI?
I am about to purchase the 2807 and was wondering if anyone out there has a Directv HD DVR (model # HR10-250)?
If so, can someone tell me if the HDMI signal is passed correctly from the HR10-250 through the 2807 to the display (my display is a Sanyo Z4)?
Thanks for any feedback...
Are there even any 1080p SOURCES out there other than HTPC?
WMV-HD? Which I guess is HTPC. I'm using an HTPC, so passing 1080p is something I want to know actually works.
Mac-D: I can tell you next week.. I have a Denon coming and I have a Sony HS51 FP that I use as my main HT. I also have the HR-250... any idea when D TV is suppose to update the software with a new firmware download?
RufusAZ 04-01-06, 08:28 AM What surround fields do people use? Naturally, when watching Dolby Digital or DTS signals I am having it auto decode those signals. However, when watching something like HBO which most of the time doesn't come through 5.1, I'm not quite sure which mode to put it on. I am currently using PL II Cinema. Is this a whacky setting? I'm new to having a receiver with a lot of options.
mziegler 04-01-06, 11:19 AM thanks for the question Rufus--I'm new to home theater. Does one just set the receiver to the incoming source?
sdurani 04-01-06, 12:55 PM I am currently using PL II Cinema. Is this a whacky setting? On the contrary, it is probably the best setting for 2-channel material. PLII does an excellent job of extracting dialogue and sending to the centre speakers, as well as extracting recorded ambience for the surround speakers. If you listen to any 2-channel music, you should try the PLII Music mode too.

Absolutely! Pro-Logic II is excellent for stereo sources. If only the 2807 had Dolby Headphone I'd be a very happy camper :D
