View Full Version : The Sony CRT won't turn on problem (Poll inside)

So I have had my 34XS955 for about a week and I have already seen the problem where the TV will not come on and you have to unplug it to fix it.

Is this a normal thing for most xs/xbr CRT owners?
How often does it happen?
Should I worry?

Lets do a poll. If you own a xs/xbr model Sony CRT:

1. What model TV do you own?
2. How long have you owned it?
3. How many times have you had this problem happen to your TV?

I think it happened twice, but not sure if the remote was pointed at the TV, anyways the third time I pressed power it powered on, both times, "this" happened during the first two months

if you look at your poll, it seems to happen very early then never again

Should I worry? No it's not normal to have to unplug a TV to get it to turn on. That would be like having to occasionally push-start your new BMW to get it to start. The TV is defective - have it replaced with a working unit.

Not an HDTV, but I have an old 1993 19" Sony Trinitron in my bedroom where the power supply had to be repaired three times during the warranty. After that, it worked flawlessly for ten years. Then the power supply died again, so it's time for a new TV. I am looking at the new Toshiba 26HF66 right now as a replacement. It's the largest I can get to put on top of my dresser drawer. I wish Sony made a 26", tough.

Kd-34xbr960 - twice and it's only the second day I've had it turned on. I have it plugged into my Comcast/Motorola DCT6412 HD cable box's switched AC outlet. Think the problem is insufficient power at startup, or the box. Worked fine last night, but didn't come on completely this /am, or tonight when I got home. Found turning it off/on a couple times fixes the problem. Hope this goes away soon....

It may have been posted somewhere before, but considering the topic of this thread, I thought it would be appropriate to have it here. Copied from the Sony website for support on 34XBR960:

The television will not turn on or does not have any power.

The television may not turn on if there is a power issue or if the television control settings are incorrect. If the television will not turn on with the remote control, it's possible the batteries in the remote control are weak or something is interfering with the infrared (IR) signal to the television.

Follow these steps to troubleshoot the television not turning on:

Make sure the AC power cord is connected securely to a working wall outlet.
NOTE: If the television is plugged into a power strip or surge protector, unplug it from the power strip or surge protector and plug it directly into the wall outlet. If the issue is resolved, the problem is with the power strip or surge protector and not the television.

Press the POWER button on the television.
Press the POWER button on the remote control that was supplied with the television.
NOTE: If the television turns on and off using the POWER button on the television but does not respond to the POWER button on the remote control, troubleshoot the remote control.

Unplug the television power cord from the electrical outlet for 30 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into a known working electrical outlet.
Attempt to turn on the television.
IMPORTANT for the following models only:

KDF-E42A10
KDF-E50A10
KDL-V26XBR1
KDL-V32XBR1
KDL-V40XBR1
Unplugging the above television models from the electrical outlet may only be a temporary fix. The problem may reoccur after several months of use. To completely resolve the issue, a software update is available.

For all other models, service will be required if the troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue.

Sorry...not trying to argue, but it is for the XBR. The part at the bottom relates to those specific models only when trying to apply the fix
It states that for those models only the fix may not work and the problem may reoccur and would require a software update. So they are separating out those specific models that may need something additional.

kny3twalker
03-17-06, 11:50 AM
joe there is not really any difference between a XS and XBR CRT, I believe most of the features are simply lock outed by a setting in the Service menu on the XS models, and of course there is a different back panel covering where the firewire ports should be

the software update was posted months ago in the LCD forum, and people that own those models are suppose to enter your serial number to see if you need update

I checked for my XBR LCD

furthermore these are not even XBRs

My XBR 960N turned off by itself after 30 minutes since I bought it. Already replaced one DZ board and that fixed the problem for about 3 weeks now it does it only if the room is above 76 degrees. 2nd DZ board on the way. Well, whaddaya know? I came home from work this evening, unplugged the thing for five minutues, plugged it back in and it came on. Then thirty minutes later, Circuit City called to say they're coming tomorrow (not next Thursday). Guess I should've waited to unplug it (and threatening to complain to the BBB and tell everyone I know not to shop there helped, too).

I'll let them come and see if they still want to look at or have any ideas. I'm going to ask them for info on the front panel LED diag codes.

Today was the fourth time. I have an Excel spreadsheet where I log them (hey, I spent $1800 on the thing). I started it after the second time it wouldn't boot.

Has happened twice in 3 days. Bought TV open box from Tweeter. Powered up and all was well. Tried to power up later that night and got the blinking red lights and no picture. Went to bed. Woke up yesterday, added cheapo surge protector and had picture again. Later last night did not power up again. So far it has turned on every time today. I'm glad it seems to subside over time as I was nervous about my purchase. Just to be sure I will add a better surge protector.

I really hate to bump such an old thread, by my trusty 36XBR800 just let me down today. My set is almost 4 years old, and has never given me a problem. I love my set, and hope it isn't a serious issue. I just googled "36XBR800 won't turn on" and found this thread. I unplugged it for 30 seconds, and it's still the same results. The standby light continues to flash, but I get no picture or sound. I wish I would have bought an extended warranty, but back in summer of '03, the set was so reliable and already had a 2-year warranty, so it didn't seem necessary. :(

I also have pwr problems, purchased KD-30XS955 1/05/06 and every 6 months the set will not power up, the LED power light flashes 19 times and clicks with no sound or picture, once you unplug and replug it in it works. I did buy the extended warrenty from ABC warehouse and have had a certified repair center out 3 times now (18 months since purchase) I have opened up cases with Sony. End result, repair center soldered on chip to a board first time (per Sony), second time sealed the suction cup for the picture tube for voltage leak possiblities (per Sony), third time out stated they had no clue and wrote it up unrepairable and Sony had the gull to blame it on voltage spikes and suggested an ISOBar, funny thing is I work in the computer field and have it on a tripplite ISOBar. Sony will not do anything for me, ABC warehouse just wants to keep paying the repair center to come out and do nothing until the warrenty ends. Trying to esculate the problem but no one cares at ABC warehouse or the repair shop. I did find out the warrenty company is ABC warehouse who sold me the tv, no wonder they don't want to do anything about it! Next step Small Claims court for ABC, High tec Video and Sony!

I'm wondering if some of the experience here is false positves?

Yesterday my wife tried to turn the TV on and it stayed off - and she just asked me "what's wrong with the TV?"

It was operator error. She had hit the power on via remote - but did not wait all the 3 to 5 seconds my set (36kd955xs) sometimes takes to power up; so what she was doing was sending a power off signal before it had powered on.

Once she just hit the power on button on remote and left it alone it came on.

Again - I have never had this problem on my set and its going on two years.

I have a KV-32HS500 that developed this problem after about 4 years. Sometimes takes many tries to turn on and flashes the lights when it doesn't. It usually turns on more quickly if I have had it unplugged for a while.

I also have a 24" (fv-100? not sure of model) that was built about the same time (2002) and it also had that problem. Flyback had to be replaced for $150, which fixed the problem but the picture quality seemed grainier and darker afterwards. I wouldn't bother fixing it again if I could do it over.

If you search around CNET or elsewhere for the Sony 24" - 32" HDTVs and non-HDTVs from around 2001 and up, you will see MANY reports of this problem.
