View Full Version : One-and-Only PS3 as Blu-Ray Player Thread
LowTech1 08-24-07, 12:54 PM I bought a 60 gig PS3 about a month ago..I took back an Sony S-300 BDP..I read the forums on here right after I got it and found out the PS3 was the way to go..I couldn't be happier..Got my 5 free movies..My PS3 is quiet..Everyone is talking about the fan noise,I have none..Even when it is quiet I can't hear it.I must have got a good one.. :) My brother has an HD-DVD player..I just use that when I want to watch an HD-DVD movie..cheers!
Jeff_DML 08-24-07, 01:01 PM Oh well. I don't think it's a huge deal, but I have a DVR so use that to record TV programs.
I dont get cable or satellite so no DVR for me, PS3 would of been nice of ATSC. Guess I need to setup a mythTV box.
Jay_Davis 08-24-07, 01:04 PM Well, color me baffled. I sold my 20gb and shipped it out last week. Before I packed it up, I fired it up to take a disc out, delete all of my info that was stored on the HDD and reset everything. I had no problems with it then or any other time since I bought it at x-mas.
I got a pm ftoday from the guy who bought it and informs me that it's basicly faulty.:( He gets no picture at all. He's tried hooking it up via HDMI, component and composite. He got something with composite, but it wasn't a picture.
Luckily it's under warranty and it can be fixed if need be, but I'll have to send him the receipt or duplicate/copy of it should he decide to keep it and fix it on his end. He's going to get a hold of sony tomorrow and try to do a troubleshoot over the phone. If that doesn't work, it will need to be serviced. Both the buyer and I are on good terms. I apoligzed and offered to buy him a bd title for his trouble should he decide to keep the system and get it serviced on his end. I tried to help him out as much as I could as far as gettting the problem solved and pointing him in the right direction as far as getting sony's help over the phone.
What do guys think could've caused this? Any ideas?
Has he tried resetting the video so the PS3 renegotiates the video connection and resolution? I believe you do that by holding the power button for about 5 seconds when turning it on (should be a beep when you've help it long enough).

you made the right choice returning that s300 for the ps3. i tried the s300 and it was junk to me.
My recently purchased PS3 is a magnitude more responsive than any previous HD DVD or BD player -- and has not had a single glitch since I got it. I'm still trying to figure out how to duplicate the loud fan noise that some others have mentioned. Oh well:-)
bah, sounds like no PlayTV for the US
http://www.eetimes.eu/france/201802155?cid=RSSfeed_eetimesEU_france
Play TV is WAY overrated. I read a bit more on it, and the tuner will ONLY support terrestrial OTA broadcast.
So in the states that would mean the networks only, and you'd have to set up an antenna.
Big deal.
Now if they come up with a way to send a feed from a sat or cable box to the PS3 for recording, that would be hot!

Try running folding@home for 8 hours (in a non air conditioned room). I was up early this morning and heard it go from low fan to high (higher?) after it had been running about 7 hours.
My MacBook went into fan overdrive after running folding@home for about 10 minutes :) The power brick even got hot.

I don't know. I talked with sony yesterday and they said that it might just need to be rebooted/reset and suggested that I tell the buyer to call sony so that they can do a troubleshoot over the phone, including a reboot/reset. I haven't heard back from the buyer yet on whether he called sony today like he said he was going to do and talk with them.

jedurocher 08-24-07, 03:45 PM I have 60gb model bought back in Dec of 06. Loud is a relative term. When the fan's on low, then it's relatively quite. Probably about the same as my Wii. However, when the fans are on medium to high, then it's much more noticeable. About the only time the fans are at med - high speed is when one of the kids closes the AV cabinet door in front of the PS3. I'm really considering installing a couple of fans in the cabinet to keep everything cool. With two toddlers, I'd prefer to keep the doors shut.
yuichiror,
Read this post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=10803260#post10803260) about cooling fans. I was probably going to get a couple as well for the same reason. My center channel requires me to keep one of my doors open (they slide), but I still need to cool a hotter than normal Vip622 and the PS3.
Here is the link to the fans: LINK (http://www.coolerguys.com/sff21.html).

Djstinger 08-24-07, 04:18 PM My 3 day old ps3 is very quite IMO even after a 1/2 hour of SD dvd. what is the new change made in the 80g/60g for the fan noise and how can I check my unit for this change.

Phew! What a sigh of relief! I just heard back from the guy who bought my PS3. He talked to sony and all it needed was a system reboot. Now it works like a charm. It's just wierd and puzzling at the same time how something like that can happen.

By "system reboot" they mean the 5 second "console start button" push?
(we need a PS3 FAQ) :)

TrueHD is decoded in the PS3 before the audio signal is sent out so as long as your Onkyo will accept multi channel LPCM, you should be ok.
Here's a very long thread about HDMI/LPCM/"Future Proof" receivers:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=738511
On the first page there's a short list of receivers listed by level and what they are capable of doing in terms of HDMI audio.
FWIW, although there's several receivers coming out that can decode the lossless codecs, I don't think there's ANY HD/BD players that can output those codecs via bitstream right now. In fact, advanced authored discs require these audio tracks to be decoded within the player itself.

what is the fix?
yuichiror 08-25-07, 09:46 AM what is the fix?
Someone mentioned that with the newer models, Sony went with a lower voltage chip, so it doesn't generate as much heat.
whotony 08-25-07, 10:06 AM ok so not a simple do it yourself fix then?
lgans316 08-25-07, 10:07 AM I am yet to receive accurate info about the fix from Sony.
I believe that it's a problem with PSU or the housing unit which seems to have been replaced. My PS3 now generates less heat and makes just a humming fan noise. Sayonara to the LPCM 1.0ch grinding fan noise.
which ps3 do you have?
i am asking because i just recieved my 80g ps3 and it appears to be very quiet. i don't know if this is a new change or not.
was your ps3 noisy from the start or did it eventually get noisy?
Now that you have had the 80GB PS3 for a few days, can you tell us about improvements other than low noise. For example, will the PS3 accept the connection to a USB HHD formatted in NTFS to allow transfer of larger video files? Will it display *.ts video files or must they be converted?
jimpats 08-25-07, 12:20 PM Hi,
I am looking forward to buy a complete home theatre system and i am thinking to invest in Sony HT-SS2000 and for a player to go with it I was thinking between BDP-S300 and PS3 60 GB which are similarly priced ?
Why should I not go with PS3 where i also end up getting a gaming console along with a blu-ray player similar to BDP-S300.
I am very ignorant to all this technolgies and getting my feet wet..
Please advice.
PS: I just got a Sharp Aquos 52" LCD from costco.
Thanks

If you ask the PS3 thread if you should get a PS3, I think most of us would say, "Get the PS3." I don't own a BD player besides my PS3, but I've heard that the it, loads up faster, upscales DVD's well, and has an excellent picture when compared to standalones.

Actually, there was a thread on just this topic.
Anyway, to sum up:
PS3 downside:
Some have excess fan noise. YMMV
200 watt power consumtion.
Wife factor on controller as remote. An extra cost remote is available, but it is bluetooth which for some with universal remotes, is a problem.
Extra money spent on games :)
Upside includes Media server, game console, good upconverter of DVD's

Does anyone have a solution to this? While watching Layer Cake, I had the menu pop up about 6 times throughout the course of the movie...

If so what formats will it play? Also what gives with that awful "keyboard" interface? Can you plug in a USB keyboard?

Yes, from the Playstation store.
You can't map a drive, but you can stream media via media server.
Formats:
* Memory Stick Video Format
* - MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC)
* - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile (AAC LC)
* MP4 file format
* - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
* MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)
* MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)
* MPEG-2 TS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2)
* AVI
* - Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)
* - Motion JPEG (μ-Law)
* AVCHD (.m2ts / .mts)
I'm pretty sure you can plug in a USB keyboard
redbirdpat 08-25-07, 03:45 PM Does anybody have a flickering problem when playing back 1080p movies? I am playing back "Planet Earth" Blu-Ray. The PS3 is directly connected via HDMI to the television. But during playback, there is slight flickering which is very distracting. Maybe 2 times a second you can see a video pulse where the lighting changes ever so gradually. Is there some setting I am missing? Or is this a known problem? I have the latest firmware update, 1.90. Thanks for any help.

I had that problem with my old 42" Westy. It had a bad HDMI port. I would look into that.

Well, this will probably sound like a silly question, but I thought all Blu-Ray disks were 1080p (it IS a Blu-Ray disk). So you're saying even though it is Blu-Ray, it might be 1080i? My television says it is receiving a 1080p signal, which I suppose could mean it is upconverting it.

You can try to copy them from a USB drive, but if the PS3 doesn't support that particular codec, it won't see them on the USB drive.
Else you can setup a media server on a computer than has access to those files, and you might be able to play them on the PS3, depending on the server.
If I'm turning into general PS3 support, someone tell me to shut up...

I wasn't aware of this. Are you saying the PS3 can playback TS files such as those created from a HDTV capture card or HDHR network tuner device?
How do you facilitate that playback? Do the files have to be put in a WMP accessible folder so the PS3 will see them?
redbirdpat 08-25-07, 04:48 PM I guess I can try another HDMI port to see if that helps. Thanks.
Nope. That didn't work. Guess it could be the cable. But I think it's the PS3. I think I've seen similar effects on some games that I was playing. Is there maybe some setting I'm missing? Or could there be an issue with my player? I have no idea how to tell.

I thought all Blu-Ray disks were 1080p (it IS a Blu-Ray disk).
Most should be, but they aren't required to be. The HD HQV Benchmark disc, for example, is intentionally 1080i (both Blu-Ray and HD DVD versions) so that you can use it to test the HD deinterlacing performance of your devices.

It IS 1080i and not might be. BD can support several resolutions from 408i to 1080p 24fps but it doesn't support native 1080p 60Hz (and nether does HD-DVD). Also PE was shot on 1080i 60Hz video cameras. You just have the output of the player set to 1080p so it is deinterlacing and sending to your TV. Make sure it is outputting 1080p 60Hz and not 1080p 24Hz. 24Hz would cause a loss of frames which would look like judder.
home_theatre_man 08-25-07, 05:43 PM Guys, note that there are two releases of Planet Earth on Blu-ray. One is 1080p (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/planetearth.html), and one is 1080i (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/983/planetearth_us.html).
The resolution of the release is not always indicative of the resolution of the photography, and vice-versa.

Just got a PS3 today. Hooked it up and here's a problem I need help with.
I have about 90 folders of music (mp3) on my PC (about 80gb total) in one shared folder.
After doing a search from the PS3 I can see only 17 of those folders and play back the songs within those 17 folders from the PS3. I can't see the other folders at all.
What do I need to do to see the other 73 folders and play them back using the PS3?

What software are you using for the media server? Some servers take a bit more time to index that many folders than others. You might want to wait a bit and see if can see more over time.

I have had most success with VLC, i.e.they play with audio, I have been trying to use some linux programs to do it but PS3 is not liking them.
Never used VLC to do that. Is there a "how-to" somewhere so I'll know what the settings should be?
What software are you using for the media server? Some servers take a bit more time to index that many folders than others. You might want to wait a bit and see if can see more over time.
Software is Windows Media Player 11. Will try your suggestion and check back in later. Thanks.
cappyxavs 08-25-07, 10:26 PM Hi,
I am looking forward to buy a complete home theatre system and i am thinking to invest in Sony HT-SS2000 and for a player to go with it I was thinking between BDP-S300 and PS3 60 GB which are similarly priced ?
Why should I not go with PS3 where i also end up getting a gaming console along with a blu-ray player similar to BDP-S300.
I am very ignorant to all this technolgies and getting my feet wet..
Please advice.
PS: I just got a Sharp Aquos 52" LCD from costco.
Thanks
i owned the s300 and found it to be a sorry excuse for a b) player. i returned it and bought the panny b10a and have been very happy. however after buying the new 80gb ps3 i would highly recomend the ps3 over the shi*300 for the following:
extras you get that are not on the shi*300:
>3 generation playable gaming console amazing are the number of games you can play right out of the box.
>sacd player
>wifi connectability
>internet ready connectivity no hard wiring needed.
cappyxavs 08-25-07, 10:42 PM Now that you have had the 80GB PS3 for a few days, can you tell us about improvements other than low noise. For example, will the PS3 accept the connection to a USB HHD formatted in NTFS to allow transfer of larger video files? Will it display *.ts video files or must they be converted?
honestly i seperate my gamming console from my computer. video files are something i channel to my pc and games i channel to my gamming console. as far as an external hdd it will never have one, if i need to expand i'll simply replace the 80gb hdd with a 500 or better hdd. i simply bought the 80gb version because i always believe in buying the latter technology as it is always imprioved. the console does play ps1,2 and 3 games with no effort and no problems as a matter of fact the ps1 and 2 games look great on this machine. after 3 days it still is whisper quiet.
timfrommass 08-25-07, 10:55 PM I just purchased an external HDD for my PS3 and I'm going to put all of my music on there as a source for my surround sound system. I've been ripping the music using WMP11 and it automatically creates a folder with the artists name, then inside that puts a folder for any particular albums by that artist, then the music files are in that folder. I tried a few CDs then went to test.
The PS3 recognized the HDD easily, I see the artist folders, but when I enter there it just says "no tracks". So just to see I took the audio files and put them directly in the artist folder. Sure enough, no problems. So what I'm gathering is that the PS3 will only read one folder deep on an external HDD. Can anyone confirm this? It wouldn't be the end of the world, but I'd really like to organize things by artist and album instead of just one of the two. Hope someone can help me, thanks!

If you press triangle on the folder you want to open, there should be an option for "Display All" or something like that. Choose that and you should be golden. I still haven't really understood why you have to do this, but I guess you have to for now and it is a real pain.
timfrommass 08-25-07, 11:18 PM Dude! Thank you so much! I posted this same question over that PS3 forum. I joined to do so actually. I got the most lame responses, they didn't even read the question...I actually had to illustrate how I was categorizing my music and some guy still responded "try another file type". You saved my night from the morons lol, thanks!

wow now i might just have a reason to get an ext hdd for my ps3.
if i get an ext hdd do i plug it into the front controller port? i have about 160gb of mp3 music files on my pc and i could transfer them to an ecternal hdd and use the ps3 as a music library as well :)
ok questions:
>with my ps3 do i plug the ext hdd into the front controller port
>can i format the ext hdd right from the ps3? if so what's my best option and how big can i get one.
>can i sinply buy an internal 500gb hdd and do the same thing?
>is there a size limitation for internal hdd?
UxiSXRD 08-26-07, 12:26 AM You can also keep them on your PC and get something like Twonky or TVersity to stream it.
lgans316 08-26-07, 05:20 AM Reply from Sony Japan regarding the Fan Noise Fix.
********************************************************
Thank you for taking the time to write Sony Computer Entertainment
Japan (SCEJ).
We (SCEJ) are really glad to have your response and deeply
apologize for the inconvenience with your console.
As you may already know from the repair report, we found the
malfunction on the inner-fan of your console, and we exchanged
the part to the new one.
However, unfortunately we could not find the cause of the problem
this time. Please note that we do not tell the detail information
about repairing at our repair division, to customers.
In addition, please let us inform you the following for safe use.
The inner fan of PLAYSTATION 3 is designed for allowing the
heat to escape to outside of console. Therefore, if the console
is put in kind of TV cabinet, the inner fan may work hard even
using for a short time. It may be cause of making you feel that
the fan noise is loud.
We appreciate your kind understanding in advance and we look
forward to your continued business in the future.

I have been trying to use the PS3 as a media server without success for a while. The WMP (Windows Media Player) 11 just isn't consistently picked up by the PS3 despite a flawless wireless connection.
I downloaded and isntalled TVersity (and it's free!):
http://tversity.com/home
Now I can view photos, listen to my entire itunes library, and watch trancoded AVI videos without a problem. Works great, I recommend it.
Make sure you update your PS3 system software so that you have DNLA capability.
NOW MY QUESTIONS:
My MP3/audio tracks only play out of my center/front channels when I send audio from my PS3 via HDMI to my receiver. Is this normal? DD5.1 and movies and DVDs work fine in surround. Is all audio 2 or 2.1?

What processing is your receiver set to do? Most music audio is 2 channel. You might want to try to apply NEO 6: music to the input (if your receiver supports it), that'll send music to all your speakers.

I just bought a TV that is 24p compatible. Do I put the 24p setting on "Auto" or "on". Will "On" mess up movies filmed at 60 fps? Can someone suggest some movies to sample that are filmed at 24p?
T
Most, if not all, Blu-ray movies are 24p on the disc. Take a trip to circuit city, best buy or any store selling them and look on the back of the disc box, it will tell you the res and frame rate (ex.. 1920x1080p24)
The Auto/On/Off setting depends on how well your display device communicates with the PS3. The PS3 will query the display via the HDMI link and determine the res and frame rates supported. Auto should work fine if the PS3 finds the compatible display. If it does not, then you can force 24p output by setting it to "on". Many people run their HDMI through a AV receiver for sound. Sometimes this causes the communication not to work properly and the PS3 will not know the display can handle the 24p rate and will not output 24p unless it is "forced on"
Try it either way and see if it works properly.
I just bought a PS3 mainly to play DVD and Blue-ray movies.
It has firmware version 1.55. When I look on Sony's update site there doesn't seen to be a firmware version 1.55 for the PS3. Anyone know what's up with that?
Should I just go ahead and upgrade to the latest? Does it offer any improvements for DVD and Blue-ray watchers?

For one with 1.9 you can get 1080p 24Hz output. That is an improvement important to me.;)
Scott_R_K 08-26-07, 08:19 PM Well , I've gone over to the Blue Side...finally ! PS3 is in the house .:D
It came with v1.51 firmware so that was the first thing to do , upgrade to 1.9 !
Setting up the Audio and Video took a while but by Midnight I was watching Fifth Element in Blu-Ray . Very nice !
For those interested , PS3 @ 720p HDMI to Pioneer VSX-74TXVi (for switching) to a DVDO HD+ (for CIH stretching) to an Infocus SP5000 720p PJ . Audio is set for PCM which the Pio recognizes and plays . The HD+ is also getting 480i from my Oppo HD970 and de-interlaces and scales to 720p . I couldn't be happier :)
Also got the F1 PS3 game . Man , how games have changed since I played last.
Thanks to all for the info that made my decision easier . AVS rules :D

Make sure TVersity searches for all your media files.
Then on the PS3 you might have to search for Media Servers. Mine disappeared too, but when I searched for it, it found it no problem (unlike WMP11 which is still MIA). Let me know if that doesn't work.

I would not use an USB HD without external power as you will rob PS3 of too much power via USB port (unless it's a microdrive or flash drive)

Thanks for the info. I'm struggling with the noise issue now. I'm thinking about exchanging the PS3 for the BDP-S300. I'm lukewarm about gaming, and don't really care about having a "media server," so I won't really miss those features too much. I'd like to use the PS3 for CDs and SACDs, but the fan noise is too distracting, so the SACD feature is useless to me. Also, it's a pain to have to turn on the TV to select the SACD layer(s) on a disc. I also miss having a display on the front of the machine. I guess my options are:
1) Exchange - I see the 300 is smaller, which makes keeping my Pioneer for music more manageable in my rack. I can live with slower loading times if the unit is quiet and if it upscales DVDs to 1080p pretty well.
2) Contact Sony for a repair - it appears from reading the above that they replaced the fan in your unit and returned the same machine to you. Is that correct? How long did it take? If I call their 800 number (USA) are they willing to do the repair, or do I have to get irate with them? Are you satisfied with the noise now? Can you hear it at all?
Thanks for any info or thoughts you might have.

The two extra are for stereo audio.

The PS3 component cable has 5 RCA cables, 3 are for the video and 2 are for the audio connections to your TV. Your TV must have component input to use this connection.
I find this works very well.

Sony Japan took 3 days to replace the defective fan and deliver the console to my home address. There is no need to get irate with them coz they are expected to fix the problem which they are aware of and dealing with on a case-by-case basis.

The only thing that resolved this for me was to make sure that tracks I wanted to access were included in a play list. Otherwise, I had the same errors that you're having...
Once I put them in a play list, they showed up on the PS3 - but, unfortunately, not well organized (i.e., not organized by artist / album / etc.) - still have to figure out how to resolve that...

I have a question on audio quality when playing CD's.
I am using an optical cable for audio, attached to my receiver.
Movies sound great, games sound superb, but, when I listen to a CD...it sounds like crap.
It is all distorted and has a very "tinny" sound. Is it because my receiver is only accepting 44 khz and 48 khz?
I used to have an Oppo 970HD hooked up the same way and the sound quality was top notch.
Is my only option to upgrade my receiver?!
I have been contemplating getting a HDMI passthrough receiver, but, really don't want to spend the $400 right now...
What else can i try?

Check you audio settings, Settings > Sound Settings > Audio Output Settings
You can select the different output sampling frequencies. Try only 44.1 and 48K Hz. (for the 2channel LPCM)

You might have to turn off Windows firewall or configure whatever antivirus/firewall software you have. I had to do that to get my TiVo wireless to work.
TVersity has an "update library" button that you choose, and a little icon spins in a circle until it is all updated (can take a while).
Check you audio settings, Settings > Sound Settings > Audio Output Settings

I have it set as that...it doesn't make a difference.

It doesn't matter on my receiver either...I have put it on Prologic, DTS Neo, Direct...all of the options on my receiver..
Another thing to add to the puzzle..

I have been strugling as others have in using a Media Server with the PS3, trying both the WMP 11 and TVersity. I am now working with TVersity, and use the TVersity FAQ for help, starting with Control Panel, clicking on Administrative Tools, then Services, then locating and clicking on TVersity Media Server, opening Log On, and entering the name and password. Clicking OK gets me the window with TVersity Media Server shown as not started, but clicking on Start gives me error 1069, logon failure. I am using a wired network with a router, and the PS3 talks to the internet, but my computer can't communicate with the PS3.
I can't find a way to overcome this problem. Any help will be much appreciated.

Maybe your receiver doesn't support 48K Hz. -- just a wild guess. I think there is another setting under "Settings > Music Settings > Audio CD Output Frequency" for 48K Hz or 44.1 / 88.2 / 176.4 kHz.
What is the receiver model?

It is the receiver that comes with the Onkyo HT-S790...
according to this page....clicky (http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=HT-S790&class=Systems&p=i)...it supports 192khz at 24 bit....
I don't get it...any other ideas?!
Rich Davenport 08-27-07, 05:03 PM I have it set as that...it doesn't make a difference.
It doesn't matter on my receiver either...I have put it on Prologic, DTS Neo, Direct...all of the options on my receiver..
Have you tried over-riding the Auto input detect (on the receiver) and manually selected PCM?
From the receiver manual, p. 56:

However, if you experience either of the following

can specify the signal format as either PCM or DTS:..."
Although the problems they describe are for DTS
Have you checked out the AVS thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=757222)on the receiver?

This would happen if uncompressed PCM tracks have been selected. I think they will only output PCM stereo over optical.

any suggestions?
thanks for your help..
JoeFinn 08-28-07, 12:43 AM I am yet to receive accurate info about the fix from Sony.
I believe that it's a problem with PSU or the housing unit which seems to have been replaced. My PS3 now generates less heat and makes just a humming fan noise. Sayonara to the LPCM 1.0ch grinding fan noise.
I wonder is there anyway to identify these newer models, serial number or something?
I'm talking about the new 65nm processor...

I think you must put the jpgs in a folder called "PICTURES" on the SD card. Look in the manual. Also note, that all folders must be in UPPERCASE.

Documentation is a real sore spot for me with the PS3. First, there is no hardcopy manual for this stuff and then there is no pdf either. Doesn't matter because I don't think any of this information is in the cheesy online "manual" anyway. I guess Sony contracted out their user documentation to AVS and other forums. The PS3 has amazing potential, but..
OK. I vented.

Windows Media 11 won't run on the PS3. However, it can be used on your desktop/laptop as a media server that will allow you to access photos/music/videos on your computer from your PS3
imuesmail 08-28-07, 07:54 AM The PS3 is an excellent CD/SACD player---superb sound when paired with my Yamaha 661 through HDMI.
Very easy to load pictures onto the PS3 hard drive from memory cards---just get the bluetooth remote and hit "options" button after inserting the memory card: you will be able to display/copy singel or all pictures onto the hard drive. External USB FAT32 hard drives work very well for MP3, JPEGS, and video. Once you figure out how to display the contents of the memory card/ external USB HD it becomes very easy---YOU HAVE TO CLICK THE CORRECT BUTTON ON THE REMOTE OTHERWISE IT WILL SAY "no files on the card" even when there are files on the card/external drive. No need to format either using the PS3.
Only FAT32 formated external USB HDs work with the PS3--Western Digitals are ok while Seagates are not for PS3.

imuesmail 08-28-07, 08:31 AM JPEGS displayed off the PS3 look very nice, and the slide options are great. i wish could do slides and music simultaneously.
Take pictures in a 16:9 aspect ratio if your digicam allows it and your JPEG pictures will look fantastic. Or you can batch change the resolution on Photoshop (or equivalent) applied to a folder.
HINT: if you get a message "no files on memory card" when you know there are files on the card you are not pressing the correct button on the remote. The "options" and "display" buttons are your friends.

How do I switch from LPCM to bitstreaming?
In the audio settings, LPCM 44.1 and 48 are greyed out so I can't unselect them...
I only want to select the first two DD options..
I want to see if this will fix my sound issues with CD's.
home_theatre_man 08-28-07, 08:07 PM How do I switch from LPCM to bitstreaming? I want to see if this will fix my sound issues with CDs.You must output PCM for CDs. PCM is the native audio format on a CD, and the PS3 will not encode it to a compressed bitstream.

BuffaloDenny 08-29-07, 02:17 AM Is there a way to see what the internal operating temperature of the PS3 is? (similar to say the HR20 D* units). And if so, what it the recommended range?
Also, has anyone used a Targus chill mat under the PS3 to effectively cool it?
Djstinger 08-29-07, 06:34 AM O.K., I have had my ps3 for about a week now and love it, CD's sound great and with it hooked up to my VSX-84 via. HDMI the Rx sees (PCM 176 DIRECTSTREAM ) NICE...
On the other hand it would be great if I could get WMP11 to show my WiFi divice so I can stream music. I have been trying to get this to work on and off for 3 days now with NO luck, I even downloaded TVersity, but that does not work either. FYI-I am running XP and have AVG free addition and no matter what settings I try Re: firewall/security, nothing works. The computer is on the 2nd story and the ps3 is in the basement ( Man Cave ). The ps3 is getting 68% signal strength and everything is enabled except Media Sharing. "PLEASE HELP" or I will have to move my Ext. HD back and forth.

No, there isn't a temperature display. I'm surprised someone hasn't found a "secret menu" or diagnotic menu on this thing. Many TV's and other devices have some sort or service or engineering entry point. You know, "Press Display, 1, 2, 3, 7, Screen Mode" to get the special menu. Even my Prius has one
As far as chilling, I have noticed that the ambient temperature is a factor.

Just hit the PS (Playstation) button, in the center of the controller (or remote). You'll be taken back to the XMB, with the previous app (eg the Slide Show) running in the background. From there, you can go to the Music section.

Using multiple features at the same time
Users can enjoy multiple features at the same time. For example, you can view images under (Photo) or access the Internet under (Network) while playing music under (Music).
Example: Viewing images under (Photo) while playing music under (Music)
1.
Play music under (Music) in the home menu.
2.
Press the PS button.
The home menu is displayed.
3.
Select the images that you want to view under (Photo).
Hints
You cannot play (Music) content with other features during Super Audio CD playback or when (Settings) > (Music Settings) > [Audio CD Output Frequency] is set to [44.1 / 88.2 / 176.4 kHz].
Depending on the type of content being played, some features that usually can be played at the same time may not be available.

jizaref1 08-29-07, 09:28 PM How do you make the tversity search all your files, i dont recall seeing anything to search...
I did however manually import some of my files/folders to start with(pics/songs)
I did search media files on the ps3, under video/photo, and it didnt find anything, ill give it another shot tomorrow, when i have some time.
cheers
TVersity has an update library button you have to press, and it search your computer for new files and folders to add to its sharing list. You must add the folders to TVersity as the PS3 only finds what is "published" through TVersity.

jizaref1 08-29-07, 09:34 PM Questions about playing audio through the PS3:
If I play a CD on the PS3, it is true that I cannot apply any post-processing on a receiver since I am sending audio via PCM through HDMI, so it will come out of front speakers only?
What about playing streaming media (like MP3s using the PS3 as a media server), can processing (e.g. PLII) be applied to that audio output from the PS3 via HDMI to the 605?
In short, if the PS3 is playing audio (either CDs, streamed MP3s, or DVDs), what is the best setting on a receiver (I ahve the Onkyo 605) for these various functions when connected via HDMI?

It's supposed to be like that. Audio in games is very loud all the time. Audio in movies is very dynamic, so it's loud when it's supposed to be loud (action scenes, explosions, gunshots), but most of the time it's very quiet (dialog).
If you've calibrated your surround setup (assuming you're using one, and not the TV speakers), then you'll probably be watching movies at about -20 to -10 below your calibrated "0" reference level. Games, on the other hand, you can probably play at -50 to -30 and have it be plenty loud.
Make sure you have DTS and DD checked to on/supported in your options to get the proper audio output - assuming you're using optical (or HDMI) and a surround receiver.
For movies, you can turn on your receiver's Dynamic Range Compression, aka (Mid)Night Mode, which will compress the dynamics. You'll still have to turn the receiver up pretty high to hear dialog, but DRC will make sure the loud dynamic peaks don't play as loud (if you're in an apartment, etc.), and the quieter sounds are easier to hear.

this will all depend on whether or not your receiver can post process PCM signals, has nothing to do with the PS3. The Denon models can, I am not sure about Onkyo. Best idea is just to try it and see.

With the defaults for HDMI audio, the PS3 will output 5.1 48khz PCM. The Onkyo will lock into 5.1 mode and you cannot use any special processing.
To fix this for CDs, goto the music options and change your output format for CDs to the 44 / 88 / 176 khz option. Music CDs will now be output as 2 channel PCM and the Onkyo will be able to apply processing.
For MP3s, the only option I have found is to go into the HDMI sound settings and disable all the 5.1 or greater formats. This will of course disable surround sound for games and movies as well. You'll need to set them all back when finished listening. Obviously this is a poor solution and I have emailed Sony about a fix, unfortunatly I got a canned response so I'm not holding my breath they'll impliment a feature that will force music playback into two channels.

cappyxavs 08-30-07, 11:34 AM hi folks. a while back i posted a reply to a comment stating the newer 80gb version is now manufactured in china that you should consider a long warrantee.... well here's the first fatality:
i bought two ps3 units and have had them for about a week and a half and one has just died. it can no longer read any media inserted into it and can only access the main menus. we did a quick and long restore with no luck.
i'll advise again.. buy the extended warrantee the s300 was built in china and it was junk i hope this isn't the same case here and just an isolated incodent.

The best I've found is "All CH Stereo" maybe.

There are numerous posts on here asking when DTS-MA will be available for the PS3. It probably won't be, the current Silicon chip used on the PS3 isn't capable of decoding DTS-HD/MA,bitstream or pcm. Firmware updates can only update so much.
However,it can decode Dolby TrueHD internally and send it as a pcm signal to a receiver but thats it.
I know little about the PS3 architecture, but how much video and audio decoding gets done in special purpose hardware as opposed to the general purpose cell processor?

I disagree. The cell processor has plenty of horsepower for internal decoding of DTS-HD-Ma into LPCM. Once it is in LPCM, the output hardware limitation do not matter. So, while I might agree that bitstream may not be possible, internal decoding to LPCM is entirely possible. Unlike other BD players, the PS3's cell chip is very powerful and SACD decoding, DVD upscaling were all done with software with only some hardware support. In my opinion, the PS3 has enough hardware headroom to include all Profile 1.1 features as well as DTS-HD-Ma.

Are you telling me the Cell processor can't decode DTS-HD MA?The previous poster is incorrect.
A Sony representative (paidgeek) on this forum has said before on this forum that the PS3 has the hardware to internally decode DTS-HD MA. What wasn't known was whether the PS3 had the processing power to decode DTS-HD MA and support other features Sony intends to add, like full profile 1.1 / 2.0 support.

you seem to be the only person in the world that has confirmed this. care to share how you come by this?
also, i'm not sure from your wording- are you saying the PS3 can't output pcm? (because it certainly can) or that it can't currently decode DTS HDMA to pcm? (which it certainly can't!)

Thats based on what on other boards on here have said, I guess the only way to find that out is to ask Sony directly, good luck with that, hehe. I am saying that the one of the only audio signals the PS3 can currently output is LPCM. Sounds awesome too!

Downloading the firmware can be hit or miss in my experience, foolproof way is to download it from http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Network/Updates . Then transfer it to the PS3 via memory card from your camera or burn a quick cd. Instructions are online of how to do it this way (http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Network/Updates/disc_update.html).
Edit: just noticed you did try via USB, that should have worked the same as a memory card or CD but might as well try one of those aswell, otherwise there is some bigger problem.
home_theatre_man 08-30-07, 05:40 PM There are numerous posts on here asking when DTS-MA will be available for the PS3. When I look at the surround settings in the menu of the receiver it is stuck at stereo and won't let me change it. The PS3 set itself up automatically and is outputting LPCM. I get the same thing when playing a game as well. What's going on?

When I look at the surround settings in the menu of the receiver it is stuck at stereo and won't let me change it. The PS3 set itself up automatically and is outputting LPCM. I get the same thing when playing a game as well. What's going on?
Have you checked the Sound settings on the PS3 to make sure it's outputting sound via HDMI? If you're getting any sound at all it probably is already set to that, but I'd double check. Other than that I can't help you. Have you tried a HK Receiver thread?

Yep, it is set to output through HDMI.
Gonna repost my question in the HK thread as well.
Dan Hitchman 08-30-07, 08:27 PM This is specific to the browser in the 1.9 firmware'd PS3:
Is it compatible with Windows Media Player? I want to be able to watch a live streamed game that uses WM Player for the content. Will it work? Do I need a patch?
How about Real Player and/or Quicktime?
Thanks!
I'm using it with WMP11 to stream music and video from the library, but I do not know if it works with live streams.
The browser doesn't work with much of anything. I know it won't use QT or Flash, pretty sure it won't use Java, probably won't stream WMV either. The browser really blows.

Agreed:(
yuichiror 08-31-07, 06:07 AM Actually, I wouldn't surprised if Java did work. The PS3 does have a JRE/JVM installed. Though I wouldn't expect Applets to run.
Think I'll try it out today.

I exchanged my PS3 last night with the hope that I had one with especially bad fan noise. I had it for over 3 weeks, and was waiting to see if I was exaggerating its impact, and if I'd get used to it. I think I can live with 2nd gear, but when it kicks in to 3rd gear, it's like a jet engine. I've tried the unit horizontally in an open rack, and vertically in the open. When playing a game, or upscaling a DVD, after 15-20 minutes, it starts roaring. I don't think I can listen to music with even 2nd gear going. I can hear it from the opposite side of the room, about 12 feet.
So, I'm going to test the new one for a week or so. Last night, after setting it up & updating to v1.9, I let The Birds play for about 20 minutes. I think it stayed in 2nd gear, but there was too much ambient noise (crickets, neighbor's AC), for me to tell. The real test is when all the windows are closed.
If this one has the same symptoms, I'm going to exchange it for a standalone BD player.

Doug

BloodySurgeon 08-31-07, 11:52 AM I am surprised you guys aren't talking about Paramount. Seems like a huge blow to Blu-ray. The largest movie distributor, no Transformers, no Shrek the Third ... There is a Sony Blu-ray plant in my town, and they are talking about lay-offs because of this. Any thoughts about this? It bothers me especially because I bought my ps3 mainly to be a Blu-ray player (still think my xbox 360 has way better games).
Utahred1981 08-31-07, 11:54 AM Is the only difference real between PCM and Bitsteam is that the bitstream audio sounds louder?

I think it is big, although I don't think it is decisive or the end of the road for either format. And that 18-month contract is very fishy.
Having said that, I don't think it is a good idea to bring that topic to this thread:
1) Because this one is focused on the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player, and
2) There are plenty of threads dealing with this Paramount 'news' around ever since the announcement broke out.
That's probably the reason it has not been discussed here (and honestly I am happy for that) and why you didn't get the answer you probably expected.
Now, let's talk about that quiet PS3 replacement someone [Doug] just received. Is it the 80GB version?

cmconner156 08-31-07, 01:39 PM Hey everyone, I have a PS3 mostly for use as a blu-ray player. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a resonably priced receiver to make the most out of the HD sound formats? I have been told the Onkyo 605 is the minimum from onkyo, and the avr 247 will do it. Is there anything that's a little cheaper that will work? Like in the ~$300 range?
Thanks!

Well, Amazon has the Onkyo 604 for $350. I got the 674 from them which is very similar and have been very happy with the HMDI audio from the PS3.

I think as long as the receiver you get accepts multi channel PCM via HDMI, you'll be happy.

For TrueHD you need to stay with the Onkyo's 605 and up.
The 604 and 674 don't offer that feature.

The 604 and 674 work fine. You just send them PCM. I don't think the PS3 can send bitstream TrueHD anyway, so it it can't benefit from receiver decoding. Save yourself some money unless you want some of the other features thes newer models have.

This is not true. All next gen audio decoding is done at the player level, not the receiver level. As long as you have a receiver that can do audio over HDMI, you can take advantage of the next gen audio formats.

Ditto. 674 accepts up to 7.1 LPCM, sounds fantastic, and does not suffer from the dreaded LFE issue (that I have noticed....others can input).

I Have the 80gb version and it seems to run whisper quiet. i really don't want to add any thing that would make it sound like a 747 so i am not sure about the fan thing. the first version looks as though it runs off the usb port of the ps3. it also has access ports for the cables.

Thanks for the info capyxavs! The only problem with intercoolers is they're notoriously loud. I've heard it about the Nyko intercooler and I found this on the Intec: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/97434.html
No info on the Joytech. I may try to find one and give it a whirl.
The fans I bought a super super quiet. My plan is to attach them to the back of my AV cabinet and add vent holes to the side of it. The goal is to be able to close the front doors and the PS3 not to get noisy or overheat. I want to close the AV cab doors to keep the kids out of it and my wife always forgets to turn off the PS3.
aeryckm 09-01-07, 11:12 AM After searching 239 pages of info (skipped a lot) I am just going to break down and ask...
The issue: No sound from my new PS3.
The cause: My receiver, a Sony STR-K7000, only does HDMI pass through. I know I will have to upgrade my receiver to truly take advantage of the audio capabilities. At the current time, the Sony is going to have to do.
The best solution: Given my current equipment and scenario what do you recommend?
TV: Sony SXRD 50 XBR1 that has 2 HDMI inputs
Receiver: Sony STR-K7000 with 2 HDMI passthrough inputs
DVD: Sony DVP-NC85H with HDMI
STB: Motorola Moxi No HDMI, but using DVI-HDMI cable
Games: Ninendo Wii connected directly to TV
and
A mute PS3 acting as a Blu-ray player.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Allen

Yankees24 09-01-07, 06:28 PM Hey, can someone tell me what are the optimal settings or if there's a post explaining them for BD playback. Things such as :
Color Filter
RGB settings
White settings
I'm noticing some black crush and I'm wondering if I can correct it. My display is a Sony KDF-50E2000 (50 INCH LCD).
Also, since my sets native resolution is 720p, would downcoverting 1080p to 1080i be better than 1080p to 720p ?
HDMI: YPbPr instead of RGB to avoid black crush on BD/SD-DVD playback.
YPbPr: Super White should be ON in case your set allows whiter than white.
HDMI RGB: Limited (to avoid black crush on video games and dowloaded trailers.
1080p24 is best as it's native encoding of most BD discs (if your TV supports this mode even if native resolution is 720p (TV will down scale to 720p easily). If your TV does not support 1080p24 then try 1080p60. If still no good then 1080i and lastly 720p. Although technically 720p matches your TV native resolution to avoid TV scaling, most people think 1080p/i downscaling to 720p of your TV native resolution looks sharpest.

Most TVs only output 5.1 from their tuners (ie, over the air reception). It's best to just run the optical from the PS3 (and other components) direct to the receiver.

hey how you doing! glad to hear you are enjoying that panny!
yeah what i needed for my 2 offices was a high def player, sd upconverter and a game console the ps3 fit the bill. we bought two of the 80gb versions and one unfortunately will not recognise any media inserted into it. no big deal these things happen. we ordered a new one and will return the defective unit. the ps3 is a really nice all-around unit. last time round we went xbox however the controller is a night mare and sony always has the best controller as the new six-axis controller has not let us down. we used my wifes walmart discount and got the two units for 540 each also added a 3 year plan over the warrenty (4 year total) for 80 bucks each. up conversion is really nice and b) play is great on the ps3. hey by the way if you are interested in a great sub deal the infinity ps212 is 280 at amazon market place.
the 805 is working out great we love it. for high def and sd-dvd i usually use direct processing and for 2 channel tv stations i use neuro 5.1 thx dr who sounds really nice on this unit!!

The ESPN is showing 720p 60 on my projector and the Blue Ray was showing 1080i or p can't remember, maybe I have some settings that are not correct or maybe the movies just aren't the same as games ?

when I power up my PS3, the startup screen now has a purple background rather than black. I have upgraded to v1.90 but had been playing a lot of SD-DVDs lately and hadn't noticed the purple hue.
Is this a function of the new firmware or do I have something wrong with

Well actually it changes month to month & it changes depending on time of day.
If you have the clock set correctly but only play at night you'll never see anything other than a black background unless you use your own pic as a background.
Color filter should be "OFF"
robertc88 09-02-07, 11:22 AM It's probably been covered and buried amongst the discussion here but here goes:
I only have a display with component connection capability and the best resolution I can get is 1080i. Can I connect to the PS3 that way for the video AND then go to an AVR and connect to HDMI from the PS3 and get lossless tracks? I read somewhere else SOME AVRs may allow the sound even though there is no HDMI connection to the display from the AVR. Thought I post here for confirmation. If I can, what AVRs allow it?
The color of the background/XMB changes month to month.
I've had my PS3 for about 4 months now and I don't think it's ever been anything other than purple during the daytime and black at night. Are you sure it changes month to month?

Positive. It changes every month. However now you can set wallpaper to use regardless of day/time/month.

yuichiror 09-02-07, 01:32 PM I've had my PS3 for about 4 months now and I don't think it's ever been anything other than purple during the daytime and black at night. Are you sure it changes month to month?

rolltide1017 09-02-07, 02:08 PM I just have a few questions about the PS3 as a BD player. Samsung is finally replacing my broken Sammy with a new player and I'm thinking of selling it to get either a Sony S300 or PS3. I normally don't like to use game consoles as movie players but, I'd love to have a future proof BD player. Is it 100% confirmed that the PS3 will be able to support profile 1.1 and eventually 2.0? Also, this is very important to me, does the PS3 have selectable color space output for HDMI (YCbCr or RGB) like the S300? I need this because of a color space problem with my TV (it needs an RGB signal). One last thing, is the PS3 loud, as in fan noise? The ones I've seen in gaming store sound really loud but that could just be the way it is set up. I will not be able to stand it if I can hear a fan while I'm watching a movie.
The one thing I really don't like about the PS3 is that I wouldn't be able to use my universal remote but, I might be willing to suck it up if the PS3 could eventually be 2.0 compatible and has selectable color space output.
yuichiror 09-02-07, 02:54 PM Thanks to jedurocher's info, I was able to get two 120mm fans and install them in my enclosed AV cabinet. Works great!! The cabinet's closed, PS3's runnin' and the fan on it is just running on low speed. Can't hear it at all when the cab is closed and the PS3 doesn't overheat. And now my youngest doesn't touch it.
William 09-02-07, 04:54 PM ...Is it 100% confirmed that the PS3 will be able to support profile 1.1 and eventually 2.0?
NO

YES

Don't play games but when it is Folding the fan is loud but when I watch a movie it slows to a very ,very quiet speed.
rolltide1017 09-02-07, 06:20 PM Thanks William. What makes people seem so sure that the PS3 will support 1.1 and/or 2.0 if it hasn't been confirmed?
Rich Davenport 09-02-07, 06:32 PM Thanks William. What makes people seem so sure that the PS3 will support 1.1 and/or 2.0 if it hasn't been confirmed?
BD-Video 1.1:
256 MB of persistent memory required
SD PiP decoding required
secondary audio decoding required
no internet capability required
Well, the PS3 keeps coming up with new features just by adding firmware. It has the persistent memory covered. People think it can do the others in software.

Thanks for the update. I will probably be ordering mine here in the next few weeks and set the fans up to plug into the receiver so that when it is on, the fans run. If I am just watching TV with the Sat and no surround, no need for the fans.
Glad to hear that it is working wonders for you!

I had the s300 and it sucked. kept locking up on sd movies, skipping and terribly long boot time.
just my suggestion however i recomend you either go with a ps3 or the panny b10a for a b) player. the newer 80gb ps3 is very quiet and comes with a free game.

Thanks, and that explains it...the colors have been pretty similar since I've had it, no greens or reds yet to make me realize that it's changed. Gosh, I can't wait until the gray of December.
About your fans...do you have both of them venting out or does one draw cool air in while the other moves air out?

The colors that show up during the day vary by month. And at night, yes, it's black.

I noticed today when I went to turn on my 60GB, it asked for me to confirm my HDMI and resolution selection. Of course it would not repsond the controller without plugging the usb cable back in.
Is this loss of setup configuration data something I am going to have to contend with regularly I found it really annoying. I would have thought that once configured I would be able to run from then on out with just the remote. I am only use it as a BD player..
Any insight would be helpful.

Both are drawing the hot air out. My AV cabinet is divided into two separate sections.

This may be a silly question, but after the last time you used your PS3, did you power down( hit the power switch on the back of the unit ) or did you just put it in standby mode? If you power down, over time I'm pretty sure the PS3 will lose its settings.

price is competitive however i like the blu-tooth ps3 remote i can aim it at the dark cave corner of my desk and it still works. besides the beauty is taken away by that ugly wire. just my opinion however it does light very nicely which is something the ps3 remote does not do.

Has the issue with ps2 games still not been fixed in ps3 firmware? I asked a similar question a few weeks ago relating to the horrid picture quality of fifa 2006/07 on my ps3 by hdmi to a 50pz700 plasma. It would be really nice if sony could fix this issue.

I am unaware of any power failure that occured in this timeframe... No blinking clocks or any indication that any other device lost power..
Wouldn't this kind of configuration data be stored in non-volatile memory anyway? We are only talking about maybe a day or two between uses. I will watch it, but I was very surprised. I am hope this does not indicate a hardware problem with this unit. I also noticed that there seems to be a lot more HDCP polling over HDMI on BD movies than I am used to seeing on HD DVD or at least since the very early firmware HD DVD versions. Kingdom of Heaven seemed fine last night but Apocalypto, kept resyncing the HDMI and HDCP.

What happens when HDMI and HDCP resync? I'm not sure if I've seen this issue.
cleikhim 09-03-07, 06:50 PM Hey guys I have a quick question as I am looking at getting a new tv to go with my ps3.
Does the TV have to support HDMI 1.3 if you have a ps3 and a reciever with 1.3? Will you still be able to output Dolby True HD from the ps3 or do all of the components in the system have to conform to the new standard to get the advantage of the new hd audio formats?
Thanks

Mongoos150 09-03-07, 09:52 PM Getting a VERY disturbing problem when playing BR movies - I put in Pirates 1, picture came up as STATIC - yes, static - with a slight overlay of the video that was playing (the Disney splash screen). The audio was fine, via optical output, but the video was like nothing I've ever seen. When I restart, sometimes the problem with go away, sometimes it won't. I don't understand what could cause this since I'm using a 24AWG Blue Jeans HDMI cable, very thick high quality cabling. Any ideas?

yuichiror 09-04-07, 07:18 AM What changes were made ?
Unofficially:
The following information below were from QJ.NET readers, our own observation, forum members, as well as those who are actively discussing this surprise update over at the official PlayStation Forum:
* Ability to add Flash wallpapers
* Seemingly faster XMB load times
* XMB screensaver option (which was there prior to this but just became popular because of this)
* Improvements on Internet Browser application
* Auto power off for the controllers
* Thumbnails in the video section
* Synchronized game clips in the games folder load up
* Faster transition from game to XMB
* Updated PSOne/PS2 controller compatibility
I found something regarding that here (http://uk.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/guides/detail/item77969/http://uk.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/guides/detail/item77969/).

Just FYI, I unplugged the PS3 for the long weekend and it retained all my settings. Controller powered on the system when the PS button is pushed once the system was plugged back in. I haven't had HDCP resync happen in the middle of a movie (though I have not seen Apocalypto). It does it quite a few times when first starting the movie though.

Yeah I did not seeit occur once you get passed the intro scenes of the movie. The Panasonic will make a loud popping sound in the first minute or two of the movie after an HDMI/HDCP resync with the PS3. Very annoying, I have a Sony receiver in between, so I don't know if that contributes somehow. The Plasma wiring is not easy to get at so I can't experiment going direct.
I used to see similar behaviour to that out of the HD DVD players on the Panasonic but it has been gone since several firmware release ago.
For comparison the Oppo 981 would flash and blink like crazy when it was trying to sync to a couple of the sets I have here. The Oppo is gone (gave it away).. for all its fourm acclaim, it did not play well with my HP DLP, or my Panny Plasma. I don't have any regrets about giving it away.
I guess I will wait for a compelling firmware upgrade for the PS3 and see if they further sort out the handshaking of HDMI/HDCP.. I know how paranoid the BDA is about copy protection and I was concerned they had traded usability for security... maybe it is just not yes as developed (refined) as it could be. The HD DVD players had their share of HDMI issues in the beginning but that seems to have really become pretty seamless now.

dougotte 09-05-07, 10:14 AM I have the 60GB. I have thought about trading up to the 80, but really, the main purpose of it for me is movies, so for the same price as the 60, I can get a standalone. Thanks for suggesting the Panny. I'm still considering, and have been too busy to even touch the thing since I first tested it the other night.
Regards,
Doug
I've had my 2nd 60GB for about a week now, and it is quieter than the first one. I've tested it w/ CDs, SACDs (2ch), games (PS2 & 3), BDs, and DVDs upconverted to 1080p. I haven't heard it go into 3rd gear at all. In second gear (any disc medium), it is audible from any location in the room, but again is quieter than the first box. From my normal position at the opposite end of the room, I can only hear it during quiet passages.
However, I'm considering exchanging for an 80GB if they are truly even more quiet. I'd rather not hear noise at all, if possible. Several 80GB owners have said theirs are quiet, but then many 60GB owners have said theirs are silent. Has anyone actually compared the 60 vs. the 80 to see if there's really a difference?
I hate to seem so neurotic about this issue, but for $500 (or $600), I'd like the best equipment possible. I'd like to be happy with it for years without always hating the noise.
Thanks,
Doug
