bplewis24 11-29-07, 11:16 PM What do you use for a receipt for a Sony Style purchase to obtain your free BD movies? I can't ask there because they use RNT (Right Now Technologies) for their support interface. It won't let me create a new account...internal error.
Not only does this program suck (we use to use it where I work), it is very cheap and inflexible. Makes me start to regret my purchase already and it isn't out of the box yet :( Been burned too many times by Sony and this purchase was like sticking my neck out.
The last page of your transaction should've produced a printable receipt. I've bought from sonystyle.com several times and always printed that receipt out. Also they usually will email you one if you gave them your email address.

lovingdvd 11-30-07, 12:33 AM Right now the PS3 can send TrueHD via decoded PCM (to any HDMI receiver) and it will soon do the same for DTSHDMA.
That is encouraging. But is the 'very soon' part your guess or have you heard something concrete?
jedurocher 11-30-07, 01:30 AM You mean this thing?:

My receiver has a 12V trigger, but I can't tell if this power supply has a 12V trigger input.
Also, how would you best position the fan? I have room all around the PS3. Use the fan to pull hot air out of the vents? Or blow cool air on the unit somehow?
Yes, (also check out this post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=10803260&postcount=1235)) but again, if you have the PS3 sitting out of the cabinet, you should try the intercooler (http://www.amazon.com/Nyko-83010-PlayStation-3-Intercooler/dp/B000KIPDZO). It may get you what you need. Whatever you do, it is always best to PULL hot air away, not try to blow cool air on it.
Hope that helps.
Spongedaddy 11-30-07, 06:03 AM Hi,
I have a question before I get the PS3. Highdefdigest said that firmware cannot update BR players to 1.1 and beyond. They did point out that due to the cell and other features the PS3 might be able to update via firmware. Is there any confirmation of this?
Thanks
Wasn't the PS3 40Gb version released on or after the 1st Nov?
If yes then this HAS to 1.1 compliant otherwise we can all return them to Sony.
I think everyone is hoping not just for 1.1 but 2.0 out of the PS3, but only time will tell.
I need to setup a permanent network connection to my Cinema room (or I guess I can try out the wireless if this reaches which hopefully it will as it's in the room directly below the wireless system but with a concrete floor as it's in the cellar). Ran a very long cable last time to update this.

Not true. There was a thread indicating that deadline was less than critical, and was only related to submissions for certification, not product release dates, and wouldn't be particularly enforced by the BDA.
That said, numerous press accounts point to the PS3 being updated to 1.1 right around when the first titles come out. We'll see if they pan out in the next month or so.

Thanks. My friend has the intercooler, and it is a noisy beast. I'm more worried about noise level (and thus my attempts to keep it cool) than I am about overall tempture.
I will try this out.

palofex 11-30-07, 07:34 AM I have answered my own question and now understand that the ps does not have the bit stream capabilities of 1.3a but is just 1.3. The ps3 would need to internally decode the dts MA for it to be available. I know there is talk of them doing this in a firmware update relatively soon. Do any of you have links where it known for sure that they will do this and the proposed firmware is not vapor ware. I like the Panny but I also like the ps3 and think it is more future proof than the Panny with the internet connections and the ability to go to bd live with firmware updates. I am confident that Sony will do that in time just less confident about DTS MA . I own a 3808 so I can get that with the Panny. I may just have to decide what feature is more important. The ability for sure to decode dts MA or the ability to go to bd live which I am unsure what that will mean. If it is more silly games then then it is not much. Help??????????? I have seen the ps3 used as a blu ray player and as an upconverter and am very satisfied with its performance.
Palofex,
"If you read it on the internet it must be true"
Seriously, while DTS MA internal decoding has been rumored for some time there is no concrete proof it will, in fact, happen. I'm not sure if you're looking to replace the Panny with the PS3 or this will be your first BD player? If you already own the Panny I'd keep it until the DTS MA question is answered. If we don't get it within the next 60 days or so I'd say the chances begin to diminish. If this is your first purchase get the PS3. It will give you the flexibility you want. If the DTS MA option doesn't happen you can always sell the PS3 and move in another direction. The resale value of the PS3 should be much better than the Panny due to it's greater functionality.
Anyone with 80gb chime in and give your opinion fan noise?? My 80gb thats out in an open space always goes to the 3rd speed in 10mins and never lets up. This thing is loud as my 360 but the ps3 has a pitch thats more annoying.
arbitrage000 11-30-07, 09:03 AM That is encouraging. But is the 'very soon' part your guess or have you heard something concrete?
Well its probably a bit of a guess but its backed by comments by posters on AVS, there was the official quote from Sony around 3-4 months ago saying they are working on it and just last week someone posted with some inside information that it was close. Also some of the reviews for the Panasonic 30 have mentioned the PS3 getting it soon also. Its still not written in stone but all signs point to before xmas...although you never know!
1.1 patch is definitely coming before Resident Evil Extinction comes out because it will be the first Sony blu ray to support 1.1.
DaViD Boulet 11-30-07, 09:21 AM Reliable word has told us that the PS3 will be updateable to profile 1.1 and DTS-HD MA decoding.
Relax everyone. January is a reasonable time-frame to look towards.
BTW, anyone using their PS3 for CD playback via digital output... IMPORTANT!!!! Be sure to check "44.1" in your "Music playback" options... not just in the audio set-up. Even if you have 44.1 PCM checked in your HDMI/SPDIF output settings, there's ANOTHER separate setting specific to music CDs. If you leave it to the default of 48 kHz (a stupid default, who did that???), it will sample-rate convert your CDs and the soudn is noticably inferior. I wondered what was wrong with the sound of my CDs and finally found this in the menu last night. When I switched my music-CD output setting to 44.1, the "music" returned.

I selected default settings for HDMI output and have it set to PCM. I only play Blu Ray movies - no CDs. Do I need to worry about checking these options to ensure I am at the highest support rates for movies?

Be sure to check every HDMI sampling-rate your receiver can accept. that way you'll avoid sample-rate-conversion in the PS3 and get transparency with those signals.

I'm not sure what is going on with the fans. My 80g unit is in a cabinet with all of my other equipment. The cabinet is ventilated on all four sides. I don't hear the fan at all unless I put my ear up to the PS3. There seems to be a lot of variability in fan noise. I wonder if they have used different fan sources in different production runs.

Yes, there is a 15-fin and 19-fin version. There was a forum that described how to check, but it was very vague and the how-to picture is MIA. I checked mine (looked underneath?) but could not see the fan itself.
I don't hear the fan per se, rather just the air rushing over the air hole vents.
mine sounds like a mini server room, its quite loud. I could live with 2nd speed but that only lasts a min or two before it goes full jet take off speed.
Anyone have luck having sony repair it?
ShagMan 11-30-07, 11:18 AM my PS3 got relagated to the back of the AV closet (it was on the through-wall rack), because of the noise. I'd rather go into the closet to put the disc in, rather than hear the noise the thing makes!

I selected 41.1/88.2/172.4. But what's the special purpose of 48k?
I guess I'm lucky in my PS3 isn't loud at all. Can I hear it on if there's no sound in the room, sure - but that's the same for the TV, my computer etc.
I have a Sony 60A2000 sxrd tv, the fan is so quiet on that I hardly hear it. Maybe the ps3 should have used the same type of fan, the light bulb is likely to be much hotter.
Spongedaddy 11-30-07, 11:54 AM I'm kind of new to this game and was wondering, with my optical cable to my home theater system can I get true hd dolby digital or any other kind of "advanced" sound besides the regular dd or dts? I have a HDMI cable on the way, but my receiver doesn't take HDMI and I want to use all of my speakers instead of the TV.
Thanks.

So far Im pleased with the noise, or lack thereof with my 80gb unit. The fans DO turn on but I have to get about 2-3 feet away to really hear anything major. During a movie, even during quieter passages its not an issue for me at my viewing distance of about 9-10 feet. The wife usually sits closer and she said that she couldnt hear anything either.
Just for the record, my PS3 is on an open rack and it gets good vetilation from all sides and doesnt have any heat generating gear near it.
coolice 11-30-07, 12:41 PM My viewing dist is about 10 ft and could hear fan noise when movie hits quite scene. It is very annoying. Tonight, I am going to try different location and set it out side of shelf and put it vertically.

i have an 80gb and my viewing distance is about 15 feet. i have mine outside my cabinet and vertical. it gets way too loud inside the cabinet. even with out being outside, it is still audible on quiet scenes. i had a 60gb for about a month and it was very quiet. so they definitely are luck of the draw.
i just ordered 2 sffd21 cooling fans from coolerguys that will hopefully allow me to put the unit back in the cabinet. i really don't want it outside.

I leave mine set to upsample to 176. Don't know if I tried it over optical, but upsampling even to 192 worked find via optical on my old SACD player. I retired it since the PS3 upsamples to the correct multiples. It's also easier to use the PS3 for SACD, since I had to go analog mode with the SACD player and change my sub settings. The easier the better.
For me the most frustrating thing is I can't get the PS3 to pass DD for games via HDMI (even though I keep it set to bistream unless I'm playing a TrueHD BD). I have to use optical for games; otherwise it decodes everything to PCM 7.1, using blank channels for the empties, meaning I can't matrix the surrounds to 7.1. Far as I know there's only one game that's actually PCM 7.1. Everything else is DD.
The PS3 exhibits this same behavior with MP3s and all the trailer downloads.

Sorry to jump in the thread without a thorough knowledge of this heat/fan/noise issue with the PS3 but I wanted to chime in and say my 40GB is pretty darn quiet. I've never noticed any noise coming from it and I did notice it runs considerably cooler than my 360 that sits right above it. Is the issue primarily with the older generation PS3's? Thanks.

Although not as important as DTS-MA and profile 1.1, I hope they fix this one in a firmware update too.

AV HAZE 11-30-07, 04:54 PM Hello All,
I just bought the PS3 80 GB deal from Walmart with 10 BD'S!!! Wow they look great. But I am confused. I have a Sammy 4665 1080p but most of my BD do not fill the screen!! I get giant black bars. The back of most of the movies I got say 1080p 2:40:1. Being I am not familiar with this aspect ratio I am assuming it is unique to 1080p and is meant to fill my beautiful screen? If so is there a particular set up I need to do on my PS3? Any help would be appreciated. By the way I am using HDMI.
I was sure I did that but now you have me second guessing myself. I will check it tonight. THANKS!
I would like to know this as well. If I didn't have to turn on either my 42" or pj that would be worth buying a PSP. My son would be ecstatic as well :)
Did you manage to check it? What was the verdict? Can it be used as a remote controller?

Nothing to do with 1080p or HD or blu ray - but rather director's intent. Embrace the black bars. This is a hot topic here, people can get feisty.
Here is a explanation of aspect ratios. This has been asked to have a sticky so here it is.

wakashizuma 11-30-07, 05:18 PM Very naive question alert: how do I set my PS3 to output bitstream?
PS3 can only output Dolby Digital and Core DTS as bitstream. Due to the parts used in HDMI, it cant output Dolby TrueHD or DTS-MA bistream.
Two things you can do :
)In XMB, go to BD/DVD setting and choose bitstream for BD audio
OR
)while watching a BD movie, press the triangle button and a menu appears. Choose bitstream in Audio output. Remember however, when a movie has TrueHD track, PS3 will only output the regular Dolby Digital version. PCM Blu-rays will be output as PCM multi channel. When a movie has TrueHD, use PCM in audio output to get the full experience. When a movie has regular DD or DTS choose bitstream if you want your receiver to do the decoding.

Exactly, 16:9 (Your HDTV) or 16/9 = 1.78:1. Your discs says 2.40:1 which is clearly wider than 1.78:1, so therefore, you have black bars. The only way to eliminate them (and keep the directors) intent is to:
A) Get a 2.40:1 front projection set up
B) Get out the chain saw and trim your TV :p

You are very close, translation: "PS3 can only output AAC encoded material as multichannel PCM or LowBitRAte bitstream via optical digital."
So, the only practical way to enjoy HD audio from PS3 is to get a multichannelPCM-via-HDMI accepting receiver.
HighBitRate/HBR transmission would require a firmware update i hear. The difference in not significant MPCM sound versus bitstream from ny HD-A35 to my Yamaha RX-V3800 show no differences but uncompressed sound from BD/HDDVD/multiSACDs is eons ahead
of any DD or DTS track on my separates Paradigm Reference system.
RX-V2700 had to go cuz it EDID-ed my HC5000 to PS3/A35 as 24fps incompetent whereas the opposite is true.

I think I've read somewhere in one of the topics it is concfirmed that the chip used for HDMI in PS3 can't be used to transmit DTH/DTS-MA as bitstream so no firmware update can fix that. I could be wrong though.
I'll be perfectly happy with the LPCM output though. works great with my HDMI 1.2 receiver. Hopefully Sony makes DTS-MA possible too.
AV HAZE 11-30-07, 09:19 PM Thank you. I felt somewhat jipped but at least I will not waste countless hours trying to figure out how to get fullscreen. I will embrace the "intent".
rlu929s 11-30-07, 09:28 PM Ok I'm new to the PS3 and wondered if someone could post the suggested settings via the Audio Video Mode.
I'm running the PS3 to my 1080p 65831 via HDMI and audio to my receiver via optical.
I've changed both the audio settings to bistream and that seems to work. However I've noticed my receiver will change from DTS to logic mode which is annoying. With HDDVD or DVD it just automatically chooses it. Any suggestions...am I doing something wrong?
So I"m looking for the video settings mainly. I've tweaked my TV and set the Video to Automatic rather than RGB or the PGY.
I turned the advanced white on?
I'm not sure about that...what are the suggested settings. Can someone list your settings for me.
I put in Xmen-The Last Stand and while it was good the video looked kind of washed out to me. Is it just the xfer? I put in Open Season and that looked really good but again any Pixar type animated movie looks good.
Thx!
Digital_View 11-30-07, 10:43 PM FWIW, Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds Live at RCMH, is TrueHD 5.1/24/96! Great listening experience. I never thought going from 48 to 96 would make a difference, but even my wife could tell the difference. She said it sounded "richer", and this coming from someone who wouldn't notice the difference if I had the surround speakers turned on or not.
My question. During the playback of this disc, the PS3 said audio bitrate was about 7-8Mbs. I have it set to send the 5.1 audio via PCM to the AVR. Would this bitrate be compressed TrueHD bitrate or the PCM bitrate? I am assuming PCM.
Thanks,
Jim
Jim, "Chris Botti: Live" on Blu-ray comes with PCM 5.1 (96khz/24 bit) as well. Not TrueHD. But still higher than 48khz/24 bit. But be aware that cappyxavs was seemingly going against TrueHD and for DTS-HD MA. Not in favor of it like your post is advocating! :D I was defending TrueHD. Hollywood movies seem to be slightly behind than the "live" performance probably because of mixing difference and extra content which make the movie require more space. As far as live performances...Maybe Dolby will take the lead on this. DTS has always seemed more cinema-inclined. Or will we see a DTS-HD MA 96khz/24 bit live performance? Hmm....
And for you question. I"m assuming PCM rate as well since it's being decoded on the PS3 first.
Wrong. It's the TrueHD bitrate, or at least a 'guess' at it. PCM would be a fixed bitrate: For 5.1 @ 96/24... that's 13.8Mbps.
Makes perfect sense.
6 (ch) X 24 bits/sec X 96000/sec = 13.8Mbs!
The BD running at 7-8Mbs is some huge bandwidth, and gives us some insight into the compression efficiency of TrueHD!
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
Jim
Grommet, you were right.
Just verified a variable "7-8 Mbit/s" TrueHD 5.1 track (24 bit / 96 khz) on the "Dave Mathew's" disc. And a fixed "13.8 Mbit/s" PCM 5.1 track (24 bit / 96 khz) on the "Chris Botti" disc.

Both sound excellent by the way. The Botti disc is a very good 1080i. But Matthew's disc is an excellent 1080p.
mr_marts 12-01-07, 06:46 AM Hello all iam new to this forum iam another Playstation 3 fan, I currently i have a playstation 3 set up on a standard samsung HD TV and i have a yamaha rx v750 its 7.1 channel but doesn't have HDMI output so iam using optical out for sound, my problem is
At the moment i cannot select all sound encoders when iam playing a blu ray movie i can only use dolby ex, surround sound standard and enchanced the amp also recognizes dts for dts hd blu rays.
Its really annonying as i cannot select other sound presets like prologic. i want to hang on to my current amp till mid next year. iam looking to get a yamaha rx v1800 but I have been reading that there are issues with the av recievers inputing dolby true hd and master dts hd to the playstation 3.
it it worth waiting for a update from sony and than buying a new amp i don't want to get something and i cannot use all of its sound features again?
Its really annonying as i cannot select other sound presets like prologic.
Why would you want to select ProLogic? That is for matrixing stereo signals into 5.1. Every blu-ray has discrete 5.1 sound already! You don't need ProLogic for blu-ray.
Ten Midgets 12-01-07, 09:23 AM I have some PS3 questions I am hoping you guys can help me answer:
I recently lost audio on my ps3. I am using a digital optical cable, checked my settings etc. but still have no sound on movies & games thru the PS3. Could it be a bad optical cable? I am so confused...
Also how does one download ps3 content (new rock band songs for example) if you have a 20gb ps3 with no internet connectivity? Can I do it thru my computer and download onto a flash usb drive then plug that into my ps3 usb slot?
Any advice would be appreciated!
Well im onto my 2nd 40gb. Last night the first packed a sad & wouldn't eject the BD disk, just a loud spinning noise that sounded like it was scratching the daylight out of AVP.Im kind of pleased really as its fan was unbearable & was told 'fan noise' will not be considered a valid reason in asking for a replacement (even if it is a sure lemon). But this one is whisper silent! Yes! (no more cable's under the door into the next room). Apart from looking like a big George Foreman grill, its one great piece of media equipment! Im happy :D
steve morgan 12-01-07, 10:09 AM ok why cant i down load from the sony sight . i go on and click on demo games nothing happens . movies nothing happens . i can navigate the sight just fine but i cant down load anything . is it me the sight what ???? . am i missing something?

I had the same confusion. You have to go to the PSN store, not the web browser.
cappyxavs 12-01-07, 10:56 AM i was debating today on waiting on a possible dts-ma fix however i decided to move my ps3 to the home theatre for a direct one on one comparison vs the panny bd30.
i need to ask what is all that speaker poping noise when dvds load and when you push stop and then resume it pops again.
the panny is very smooth on transition of audio and exibits zero poping noises.
maybe i did not have a setting correct however i have several thousand dollars of speakers that i really don't need to be poping in this fashion.
any suggestions else wise i'm just going to go ahead and stay with the panny bd-30 for the home theatre.

Likely your receiver changing DSPs. The Onkyos are known to do this when changing DSPs.
Anyone with 80gb chime in and give your opinion fan noise?? My 80gb thats out in an open space always goes to the 3rd speed in 10mins and never lets up. This thing is loud as my 360 but the ps3 has a pitch thats more annoying.
The only way I can even hear the fan, is if I get right up next to it. It's very quiet.

doesn't really make sense though the panny does not make the poping noises it would be switching dsp's as well. some of the poping noises were very loud.

Yes the Yamaha's will do this too. But there is an easy fix (at least on the Yamahas but will likely work on other AVRs). Just select the DSP that matches the one you are using when it goes into the other mode. For instance let's say its Movie DSP but when paused it goes to something else. Well pause it so its into that something else, then change it to Movie. Now the same DSP will be used in both and it won't switch.

Run a search in the receiver forum for your particular receiver and you should find some info. From what I recall, it is more of a problem with the PS3 than other players.

yes i believe this to be the case. if it were my reciver it would do it on all devices since it only does this on the ps3 it has to be the ps3. yes i do remember postings concerning this issue and they did seem to point to the ps3. some of these pops were very loud and putting my speakers in this type of jeopordy is just not worth it and i'm just going to go with what works with no special things to do and no poping noises the panny bd30 fits the bill the best. i'll keep my ps3 units in the other rooms as gaming machines and b) players on speaker systems i don't care about. too bad the ps3 was very functional it's just not acceptable.

No speaker popping here (Marantz 7001)
Good luck
rookerdo 12-01-07, 01:43 PM Thank you. I felt somewhat jipped but at least I will not waste countless hours trying to figure out how to get fullscreen. I will embrace the "intent".

AV HAZE,

So have Full Screen versions of every DVD. With DVD it seems that most people choose the Full Screen version. With BR and HD DVD there is only one version (OAR) now, thankfully. I used to hate it when I'd accidentally pick up the FS version of a DVD, only to notice it when I got home and started to play it.

Something is set wrong. Do what DV said and see if that helps. Make sure the PS3 is outputting the HDMI signal at 1080p.
btw, which movie? Not all BR movies are crystal clear like the Disocvery HD channel (or some other good HD channel.)

Yep, "Current Output Resoution 1080P". The menus look sharp, but when I play the movie "Oceans 13" the picture looks very grainy and not sharp at all. Any thoughts? Certainly a 1080P TV with Bluray DVD looks sharper than normal TV. When I watch HDTV channels it looks 10x sharper than this DVD.

Pradeep 12-01-07, 02:46 PM From all accounts, Oceans 13 is a little soft and noisy (on both HD formats). Certainly not a reference quality visual experience.

Any DVD on the PS3 should look better than something from a VCR.
Tex, do you have anything other than Oceans to watch? They're not reference quality BDs by any means, though they should look much better than VCR and even a step up from the DVD versions.
Brandon
I had a question, I am new to this whole PS3 blu-ray thing. I recently purchased the 40 gig ps3 and popped in the Spider Man Blu-ray and noticed that the picture doesnt seem smooth. I mean the motions, it seems kind of jerky like someone is hitting pause play pause play. Does anyone else have this problem or have any idea on how to fix it??
I have it on 1080p, it also looks kind of grainy...is that normal? I was thinking of renting another blu-ray disc to see if it is just this movie, I don't want to invest on any of these movies if they are all jerky like this.
texex91 12-01-07, 02:53 PM Hmmm, very strange. I also have Mr. Brooks and Ratatouille--would they be better to test picture?
Also, as a side note my PS3 locked up (and I have the new firmware).
texex91 12-01-07, 03:05 PM HS! Okay, just played Ratatouille--INCREDIBLE! How amazing that quality vs Oceans 13, which looked bad.

If it's not properly ventilated or given enough space it will put off major amounts of heat. If properly ventilated it should only get warm and somewhat hot in a few places (bottom right underneath the part that extends from the base).
Mr Brooks is also supposed to look very good from what I've heard.

Review from Highdef Digest:
The Video: Sizing Up the Picture
'Ocean's 13' hits both HD DVD and Blu-ray with identical encodes. Unfortunately, while I'm quite sure the look of this 1080p/VC-1 transfer reflects Soderbergh's directorial intentions, a series of glaring color discrepancies, heavy noise, and rough detail conspire to make this something less than a high-def demo disc.

I have been reading that the PS-3 can not output a bistream for Dolby True HD and DTS-MA. I am planning to buy a receiver that will decode both of these formats as well as having inputs for HDMI 1.3. Will this receiver decode the audio signal being passed through HDMI from the PS-3 into DTHD/DTS-MA?
texex91 12-01-07, 05:53 PM Finally hooked up PS3 and starting playing NCAA 08 and it keeps locking up?? Think it's a bad unit? I have restarted the PS3 five times now, and cannot get through more than 2 minutes of playing game before locking up. Advice...?
transco 12-01-07, 05:56 PM The HD-XA2 has a switch on the front panel that selects between 480i output to the S-video and composite connectors and 1080i (or whatever HD setting you are using) output to the component and hdmi outputs. I'm trying to find a simple way of doing this on the PS3. I have a S-video/audio cable and hdmi cable connected to the PS3. Normally I use the hdmi set to 1080p/60Hz. I would like to also be able to switch to 480i/30fps to output video from the S-video connector, which will connect to a house distribution system.
The only way I can see to do this is to go into the 'Video Output Settings' and select composite / S-video. I don't know what is coming out of the S-video connector, but it definitely isn't 480i/30fps. Can someone tell me the right way to do this; i.e. set the PS3 so that anytime the composite / S-video ouput is selected, the video is 480i?

you will need to set the ps3 to pcm and the ps3 will pass true hd to your reciever via LPCM. as for dts-ma as of right now the ps3 will only pass the core dts at 1.5m to your avr via LPCM. there is rumor of a fw upgrade that may allow the ps3 to decode and send dts-ma via LPCM.

What he said. And, in addition, this means that the PS3 is doing the decoding. It was announced recently that the PS3 will never be able to output these signals via bitstream because of the ouput device used inside the PS3. Therefore, if you do get a new receiver that can decode these formats, it's kind of wasted on the PS3. At this point, unless you buy a different player for your hi-def discs, you can just get a receiver that will accept LPCM.
Anyone else notice that the 80 gig model only outputs sacd at 48 khz? Settings are exactly the same as the 60 gig that outputs 88.1 khz.

Unless you've read something that I haven't, I don't know that it's set in stone yet. While it's been debated whether it would pass the advanced audio via bitstream, the only "hard evidence" I've seen saying it wouldn't was an email that someone sent to SI...which turned out to have possibly inaccurate information.
Although, if I'm wrong, please correct me, because like a lot of others, I just want to know one way or another.
also depending on your hd-tv there may be a "digital noise" setting that can help with a grainy picture

I am going based on the information provided on the Sony Firmware 2.0 or whatever thread that is that is currently on the first page. Here's the quote from the very first post:
Note:Some have hoped that at some point Sony would release a firmware update that would enable a bitstream output of both Dolby True-HD and DTS HD-MA via HDMI, however it appears to now have been confirmed that the HDMI transmitter chip used in the PS3 cannot support this capability (see here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=946095)) and also see the final sentence of the 3rd para. of this old press release (http://www.siliconimage.com/news/press/detailpressrelease.aspx?id=384)from SiL ,the manufacturer of the HDMI transmitter chip used in the PS3. Therefore, the PS3 will be limited to internal decoding and outputting via LPCM for the advanced audio formats.

nartieri 12-01-07, 07:32 PM I agree. I have a PS3, and was hoping that with firmware updates I would be futureproof for a bit. I also have an Onkyo 875, againg hoping for some futureproofing. I would be hugely disappointed if the quote I linked to is in fact a reality.

My 60GB model outputs both stereo and 5.1 SACD at 176.4khz. Make sure you have the proper settings selected in the PS3 audio menu. Also, it could be your receiver does not support the higher bit settings.

it will be fine as long as we can get a fw update for dts-ma via lpcm. nothing is actualy future proof just the ps3 will be current longer than most. it may not bitstream the hbr codecs but lpcm is good enough i'll just let my stand alone do the bitstreaming.

I have done the update, that was the first thing I did when I turned it on. I just rented Mr. Brooks so I will see if maybe it is just the movie or what. I stuck in a SD DVD, Transformers, and that one seemed fine. I'll post back after I've watched Mr. Brooks in blu-ray.

I have a 40gb unit and as far as I know it fits your description quoted above. I say 'as far as I know' because once the movie is going and volume is cranked I wouldn't be aware if the fan was kicking up. Next time I'll make a note to double check intentionally, but I've watched a number of movies with silent parts etc and don't recall ever hearing it.

I; assuming "home is the "US." DVDs are region-locked with the PS3, so you will only be able to play Region 2 DVDs if you buy a PS3 in Japan. The US is region 1. On the other hand, there will be no region issue with BD discs since Japan and the US are both in Region A for BD.
I already returned one, I"m gonna return this 80gb. Its louder than my last, least my last one stayed at 2nd fan, this one goes to full blast in 10 mins, its even louder than my 360. I'm really crossing my fingers the 40gb won't be as loud.

Sam,
The settings are exactly the same ones that worked for two months on the 60 gig model. My processor certainly supports the higher bitrates. Anyone out there with an 80 gig ps3 tried sacd yet?
okay so I put in Mr. Brooks and I still had the same choppy pic, but I realized that something was on Auto and I turned it off and picture went normal. After all that once the menu plays I get sound, but once the movie starts I get no sound whatsoever. What do you think? I thought it might be the receiver, but there is no sound coming out of the TV at all either...Spiderman 3 seems to be working great all around. Any advice?
I'm also having a 60 gig model outputs both stereo and 5.1 SACD at 176.4khz. The funny thing is: my receiver always detect a flag of 5.1 regardless whether the actual SACD is stereo or multi-channel. But fortunately the actual stereo/multi-channel audio ouput is correct. Is this normal?
Also when playing SACD, is using HDMI vs analog, which connection is better?
Category 5 12-02-07, 03:15 AM Sony was so excited to show us how smoothly the PS3 could revind at high speeds they didn't give us a reasonable shift ratio. Why no slower than 10x? It gets annoying watching movies with my wife because she is a constant rewinder, and we end up several minutes too far back everytime.
Maybe they can add a 1.5 or 3 times rewind in a future updaye? Sony? You listening?
With games such as resistance, spiderman 3, motorstorm, fight night etc that are 720p max on the back cover, what happens when i play on tv that cannot accept 720p signal. My tv only accepts 480i/p/576i/p/1080i. Will i playing in 480p or can the ps3 now upscale those games since there release to 1080i???
Thanks.

Does your TV or projector have an "Info" feature or something similar? My Panny plasma does and it displays exactly what its being fed when I press the INFO button on the remote.
Thats a good way to do it, if you can. Otherwise, not sure how to make the PS3 tell you.
JimboTHX1138 12-02-07, 08:18 AM anyone?
Unfortunately the only way to tell is if the display device is able to state which resolution it is being fed.
If your display doesn't have that function I presume you could simply untick all the lower resolutions in the PS3s setup. For instance, if you are using 1080p, untick 1080i,720p and 480p. This way you will know that the PS3 is outputting a 1080p signal.

Well, if I walk right up to it (at ear level in my AV cabinet) I can hear it if everything else in the room is relatively quiet. I have never heard it while playing a game, watching a movie or playing a SACD. The closest seat is about five feet from the unit.
I already returned one, I"m gonna return this 80gb. Its louder than my last, least my last one stayed at 2nd fan, this one goes to full blast in 10 mins, its even louder than my 360. I'm really crossing my fingers the 40gb won't be as loud.

The 2nd level fan is just barely tolerable, I'm trying to determine if there are PS3's out there that actually stay on 1st fan (i.e. you have to put your ear right up to the box in a quite room to hear even a whisper) while playing discs.
Sam,
The settings are exactly the same ones that worked for two months on the 60 gig model. My processor certainly supports the higher bitrates. Anyone out there with an 80 gig ps3 tried sacd yet?
Well, it sounds like you know what you're doing... hard to say what is going on.
Also when playing SACD, is using HDMI vs analog, which connection is better?
Depends on the quality of DACs in your receiver. Of course, you can only get 5.1 SACD out of HDMI, so that is what I would recommend using.
Well, if I walk right up to it (at ear level in my AV cabinet) I can hear it if everything else in the room is relatively quiet. I have never heard it while playing a game, watching a movie or playing a SACD. The closest seat is about five feet from the unit.
So if you turn the sound all the way off during a movie, you still dont' hear it from 5 feet? What model do you have?
cappyxavs 12-02-07, 10:21 AM So, just a quick check for those using the PS3 as a BD player....
How many of you are reporting that your PS3 makes absolutely no noise when playing a blu-ray disc? I.E. fan level 1. I mean like you can walk right up to it and don't hear a thing.
please don't take this the wrong way however if you are any one concerned about fan noise the ps3 is not for you. i suggest a stand alone player elsewise fan noise is what you will get. if you understand and agree with this prior to purchase you will be much more satisfied with your choice also if the fan noise is going to distract you then the value of the movie is now compromised.
all ps3 units make above average fan noise some more than others but definetly a great deal more when compared to stand alones which are generaly noisless. unless you wish to return to the store several times give my post some thought.
future proofing is one thing however staisfaction is way better.

So is mine. Even after a full day of playing games and watching flicks. I've never even heard it, even if I go up to the unit and listen closely.

Point well taken. The PS3 just seems to do so many things "right", i.e. fast, transcodes TrueHD to LPCM (a requirement based on my receiver), very updateable (1.1 profile soon), etc.
I am familiar with all the other blu-ray players out there, I don't think any of them fits my requirements, and/or seems hobbled by something else.
My only hope is a 120MM "silent" fan that will arrive next week. Hopefully this helps draw out enough hot air from the right side that the PS3 can stay in fan mode 1 for longer periods.

120mm "silent" fan- do you mean the sff21d @8.7dba noted in earlier posts? i ordered 2 of them. i'll let everyone know how they work out after i install them. they are due for delivery 12/7.

Same here with my 80GB PS3 -- my Tivo makes more noise.

Yup! So is your PS3 hot, or are you just trying to reduce some noise?
I ordered a single one for delivery 12/6. I ordered the power supply as well... still don't understand exactly how you turn the power supply on/off. Someone earlier in the thread mentioned it had a 12V trigger (which is fine), but I don't see the trigger port on any of the pictures.

both hot AND noisy. i'm going to try these fans b4 i decide to exchange it.
i believe another poster said to plug it into the back of the receiver. when the receiver turns on the fans will automatically start. even if i'm not using the ps3 the fans will help keep my other components that are on cool.

I think I see what you mean, just plug the fan into the switched outlet of the receiver, as opposed to a 12V trigger.
Mine doesn't get that hot. The air blowing out is just slightly warm, and the case itself is just moderately warm.

i love the versitility of the ps3 and fan noise doesn't bother me. my issue was popping noises durring codec changes which led me away from the ps3 in my ht. i still use them in our offices however the ht ended up with the panny bd30 and i am happy and satisfied. i figured it wasn't future proof but it is already ahead of the ps3 as far as bitstreaming the hbr codecs and no popping noises. it is also bd1.1 already so i don't really see any need to be concerned about the future the bd30 will be the player that stays for the next 5 years in the ht. on the positive side i get 5 free b) movies again:)

I'm curious too...which to get 40, 60, 80? I don't care about the backward's compatitiblity to ps2.
So, here's the real question: should I take back the 60GB (still a couple weeks left to return) to get an 80GB that potentially hums at the same level? Anyone with a 80GB that makes noise? I'm talking about fan level 2, the next step above the super-silent speed 1 that is on 5 seconds after you first power on.

John Haghighi 12-02-07, 04:11 PM Unless you've read something that I haven't, I don't know that it's set in stone yet.
I am the one that posted that information, the email in that thread was truncated at the request of the SI engineer. The information was confirmed in a phone conversation as well. Unless you have an NDA you will never see the technical details of the SiL 9132 posted on SiL's website, all that's there for other chipsets are marketing briefs.
This information comes from an engineer at SI that has working knowledge of the SI 9132, not a customer service rep as some have suggested.
Folks can speculate about this all they want, but the SiL 9132 does not support bitstreaming of TrueHD or DTS-HD MA--it is a hardware limitation and this is not going to change.
Folks who have opened up the PS3 have pictures showing the SiL 9132, draw your own conclusions.
For DTS-HD MA support, I believe the PS3 will be able to decode internally and send LPCM over HDMI with an upcoming firmware update, this should work just fine. We have TrueHD working this way and it sounds great.

mosman22 12-02-07, 04:57 PM okay so I put in Mr. Any advice?
Does your TV support 1080/24. If you don't have one the newest top of the line samsungs, sonys, or pioneers, i would guess it doesn't. It seems to me you had the ps3 1080/24 set to auto which changes the amount of fps the ps3 is outputting from 60 to 24. If you didn't know films are recorded at 24 Fps while regular 1080p output from the ps3 is 60 fps. Turning this off worked so i don't know what advice you are looking for. If you want a TV that supports 24p i would suggest looking at the Sony XBR 4 or 5(This is what i have and i love the ps3 in 1080/24 on my tv), the samsung 71 or 81, and any of the pioneer elite Kuro's. There are pj's that support this as well as some other tvs i am probably missing.

All good points. I'm not much of a gamer, but I originally bought the 60GB because I figured, hey, more compatability is always better than less, right? ;)
So, I took back the 60GB (March 07 Made in China) and got an 80GB. The new one is Made in Japan, June 2007. Guess what? Just as noisy as the old one! Maybe my definition of quiet is not the same as everyone elses?
And yes, the unit has plenty of ventilation, horizontal on a shelf, all four corners open.

personally since i'm not a huge gamer i prefer the 80g unit. software ps2 rendering is fine and i'm satidfied with it in my office. it is a premium upscaler and a incredible little multi media system. i'm hoping for that dts-ma lpcm fw update even though i won't have a use for it now but would be nice to have available. i just wish the ps3 had mca inputs i could pull my 2095 from the closet and use it as a office media center
OK, an update. It does appear the 80GB is slightly less noisy. I find it tolerable from 10-12 feet away. Yes, it still can be heard, but it seems less obnoxious than my old 60GB. It was loudest during the software update to 2.01, but during CD/SACD/BD playback it is noticible, but not as distracting.
What is just as interesting is that this one is Made in Japan vs. China. I didn't realize any more were made in Japan, especially an 80GB. FWIW, the outside of the box still said Made in China.
achalas 12-02-07, 08:03 PM Bought that :-) Might be a bit violent for my 9 year old so will have to preview myself first :)
COD4 is rated "M", I know the previous version was rated "T" My 9 year-old wants to play it, but knows that M rated games are off limits, and all T's have to go through me first.
I d/led the ratchet and clank tools of destruction demo (1.4GB) and liked it. (also-- v-nice gfx, e10+ esrb i'd guess, highly rated by the press. :p)
well some have quiet ps3s, thats great and all but others have ones with fans blowing at full speed. Atleast my ps3 is louder than my 360 because in 10mins after start up it always goes to full speed.
AV HAZE 12-02-07, 09:12 PM It sounds like the DVD you're trying to watch isn't anamorphic. if the source material isn't anamorphic widescreen, then you're gonna have the black bars on all four sides no matter what you do. try another DVD you have that specifically says it's anamorphic widescreen on the back. if the movie is 1.85:1, then it should fill the whole screen. if it's 2.35:1, then only the top and bottom bars should be black.
Wow your question just saved me alot of typing!! But I would like to add. Firstly I was wathcing an anamorphic DVD on double scan. Star Wars Empire Strikes Back. I still got the black bars all around the picture. But, The picture resolution was significantly improved. Is there a way to maintain this higher resolution and use more of the screen? I am running at 1080p via HDMI. Also if I cant, does this mean that PS3 doesn't really scale to 1080p? Could anyone with an Oppo DVD player attest to this? Any help would be appreciated.

The PS3 definitely scales DVDs to 1080p when connected to a 1080p display via HDMI.
Which Empire Strikes Back are you watching? The new "old" version, i.e. "unaltered original" is non-anamorphic, so you'll get black bars on all four sides. The remastered version with added scenes and cleaned up picture and sound is anamorphic, and you will get small black bars on top and bottom of the picture.

Where can I find the UPC bar code on the PS3 box?
I bought PS3 80gb from CC the other day and today when trying to allocate the UPC bar code in order to send movies' MIR I could only find these 2 bar codes:
- One bar code says (Serial # for registration)
- The other bar code says (POS bar code)
Is there any missing bar codes on my box? Or the one that says (Serial # for registration) is the UPC bar code which I need to send for receiving my free movies?
Thanks for your help.
So any update on the next PS3 Firmware release date which supports DivX/Xvid ?
Xbox has a confirmed release date. Why Can't PS3 confirm a date for support ?
I'm kind of new to this game and was wondering, with my optical cable to my home theater system can I get true hd dolby digital or any other kind of "advanced" sound besides the regular dd or dts? I have a HDMI cable on the way, but my receiver doesn't take HDMI and I want to use all of my speakers instead of the TV.
Thanks.
Not sure if someone answered this fully further down, so sorry if it was.
Optical does not have the capicity to transmit the new HD Audio formats. It is limited to DD / DTS (as per standard DVD's).

No bitstreaming, no problem for me as I'm using a HDMI 1.2a capable receiver. It will be the happiest moment for many of us when PS3 will finally be able to decode DTS-HD internally and send LPCM over HDMI. This will enable me to use my existing receiver without getting a new one. Pls SONY...give us the good news that all of us have been waiting for ages! It it materialize this year, that will be the best Xmas gift from SONY!!:)

It is the new cleaned up alered version. Thats what confuses me. Bars on all side in double scan, bars top and bottom on normal and fullscreen. Grrr
Yes that would be nice. BD 2.0 support and DTS-HD confirmed for the PS3 please.
I know some people want to be able to send the raw data to thier A/V system and do the decoding there, but as some of the 'extra' functionality needs the sound to be decoded in the player, then I think this is the best option.
Eventually I will consdier replacing the PS3 with a high-end SA but not till all specs are sorted etc.. Maybe this will be a Dual-format player but hopefully not :) I know I'm not alone wanting this stupid war to end but maybe this has an advantage by bringing prices down etc..

Even though you have bars on all 4 sides, are people taller and skinnier than they should be? Check your format button on your TV/display.
In PCM mode is there a way to set a preference for track decoding? For example, can I say decode and send DTS-MA first, and if the BD doesn't have that then send Dolby TrueHD, and if it doesn't have that then send DD+, then DTS? Or is there a default preference that the PS3 decodes at? I'm curious because I don't think my receiver can tell what type of track is being sent (I guess the PS3 displays this if you press select). Currently I'm doing Bitstream though because I only have a stereo setup anyway.

You would select that from what you're watching - not the PS3. When you're watching a movie, you'd select TrueHD from the audio menu, etc, etc.

It will do more than standard DVD has available. It will carry the DTS core (from DTS HD MA) which is approximately double the info contained in standard DTS.
DaViD Boulet 12-03-07, 08:40 AM tkdee,
no way to set up a "preferred" soundtrack option. I know... I'd like that too.
BTW, try setting your output to PCM only when you've got a trueHD stream, and let the PS3 decode and downmix to stereo for your SPDIF output. IMO, lossless in 2.0 played back in ProLogic or Stereo on your receiver beats 5.1 lossy DD hands-down in my system every time I compared (the realism of timber on the lossless, even in 2.0, is just so much better than lossy DD).

From the PS3 manual:
DVD Upscaler
Adjust settings for upscaled output when playing a DVD. Upscaling is a feature that can be used to enable content recorded at SD resolution (NTSC: 480p / 480i, PAL: 576p / 576i) to be displayed in HD resolution (1080p / 1080i / 720p). Because the video content of commercial DVDs is recorded in SD resolution, higher resolution video can be achieved by enabling upscaled output.
Off Set to disable upscaled output.
Double Scale* Set to upscale and display with double horizontal and vertical dimensions without changing the proportions.
Normal Set to upscale and display at a size that matches the screen size.
Full Screen Set to upscale and display at full screen by changing proportions and stretching the image
* This option can be used only when the video output setting of the PS3™ system is set to 1080p or 1080i.
Hints
To use this feature, a TV that is compatible with HD input and output must be connected using an HDMI or component AV cable. Also, the video output setting of the PS3™ system must be set to 1080p, 1080i, or 720p.
When playing copyright-protected DVD content such as commercially available DVD-Video, an HDMI cable is required to upscale the video content.
If image quality is reduced or the image does not look right when upscaled, set this option to [Off].

Which upscaling setting is best: Double Scale or Normal?
My projector supports 720p and 1080i.
I've been using a HTPC for upscaling DVDs using FFDShow and AVISynth with LimitedSharpen for years.
How would the PS3 on the best upscaling setting compare?

Xbox makes it a policy to release the details for their Fall Dashboard update while the PS3 guys try and make sure they do not release firmware update information early. This may have something to do with the PS3 being a blu-ray player and not simply a gaming console (they don't want to stifle stand-alone player sales and cannibalize other SAL manufacturers sales), or it could just be them being tight-lipped about everything as usual.

Vince2909 12-03-07, 12:20 PM Just got a PS3 :-) I've really enjoying it as a game system and a blu ray player.
I was just going to chime in that I got my 40gb model Wed of last week and love it so far...not a hiccup on any BD that I've watched.
LOOKHEAR 12-03-07, 12:41 PM I have a new 80 gig PS3 and wanted to know if 1. I could utililize it with an older Denon 5800 receiver (best of it's time but no HDMI) and an older 26" Toshiba FP (1020i and 720p) that only has a DVI port? I know that I wouldn't get the "best" (audio nor video) out of the PS3 utilizing these two pieces, but would it be a bad picture at 1080i or 720p? Possibly want even connect the 5800 to this particular tv. This option would be on the small wall mount in my HT.
Or 2. how would it be connecting the PS3 to the 60xbr1 sxrd set that I currently have? Does have HDMI's and the set itself "upconverts to 1080p". This is in our master bedroom.
Both are just interim options until I switch out the 60xbr1 for a newer Sammy xxx71 (?). And I really would like to incorporate the like new Denon 5800 (that I've had for a number of years) if I could, without buying a new receiver.
JoeFigueiredo 12-03-07, 12:56 PM I just got a 40GB PS3 as well for use almost exclusively as a Bluray player. So far it has been great!
Fan noise even during Bluray playback is very low. The highest fan setting is loud (sounds like my furnace), but I only have that kick on during Folding@Home. No games or Bluray disks kick it into high.
As a game system, coming from owning a Xbox 360, I find the PS3 controller a little uncomfortable to hold (i.e. seems to slip up and out of your hand easily, whereas the 360 controller had more grip).
I returned my Samsung 1400 BRD player and picked up this PS3, and I now have flawless Bluray playback. I had to pass up on the bitstream audio to my Onkyo 705, but the 1400 was just to glitchy. Much happier with the PS3.
Now I just hope that it develops into the game system it was meant to be in 2008.

As long as the TV's set DVI is HDCP compliant, you will get the same video with HDMI or DVI, no quality difference. You can hook up the audio via optical and get DD 5.1 and DD+ (you lose the "HD" audio fields). All sets will scale to their native resolution as that is the only way it can show an image and fill your screen. So hook it to either set, you should be happy. :D
alfredoR 12-03-07, 01:29 PM I already got my answer on another board but just wanted to follow up here. I have the onkyo 605 and use the ps3. Do I set the ps3 to. I feel its right but just wanted to discuss here.

HDMI does have some video advantages to DVI, mostly concerning color depth. DVI was 8 bit per primary color only for a total of 24 bits. HDMI out of the box supported 10 bits but just about every implementation have still been 8 bits per color. HDMI 1.3 with Deeo Color can handle 10 bits, 12 bits or even 16 bits per color. I doubt we'll see 16 bit applications any time soon but 10 and 12 bit applications are certainly possible. Right now, everything is still 8 bit since no HDMI sources (read HD movie players) output in Deep Color.
Even if Deep Color applications show up, you can still watch them with an older DVI equipped TV. HDMI has communications channels that the device can use to tell the source what it supports. If no communications happens at all, then HDMI assumes it's talking to an older DVI source and adjusts accordingly.

Thanks to both of you. You guys are genius's. I'm just trying to make use of my older equipment for the time being. I use the 26", in the HT, primarily for SAT TV as not to crank up my big equipment. It would be probably be the best place for the time being (even without the receiver/speakers).
I may be asking more questions as I decide which one to hook it up to. Thanks again.
Thanks.
The PS3 will downscale to 480p.
However there are some other games (particulary newer games) that even though they say 720p in the back they will scale up to 1080i.
I know for a fact that Resitance, and Motorstorm are downscaled to 480p if your TV does not support 720p. I have one of those TV's. I still enjoy Motorstorm but I am sure it would have looked better at 1080i
And I know for a fact that Uncharted(back says 720p), and Ratchet and Clank(back says 720p)
Is that deal still good? I thought it was just for last Saturday? My brother wants to get a PS3.
This deal was only on-store and limited to around thanksgiving. However if your brother still wants one the best deal I have seen is at Walmart online. You get either the $499 or $399 with a game of your choice from a list, a bluray remote, and an additional controller.

Thanks, the game part and the extra controller is worthless to him as he only wants it to play movies. I'll guess we'll just have to keep an eye for future deals, thanks for the info though. :)
Pradeep 12-03-07, 04:53 PM You could always sell the extra controller (or two) and the game on ebay, if you are comfortable with that.

Is there a way of telling what the actual resolution the PS3 is outputting? I tried to untick the 480p in the display setting but can't. Tru the automatic setting, the PS3 selected 480p, 720p & 1080i for my display. My HDTV native is only 720p.

To my knowledge, it depends on what sound content does disc or what kind of disc (SD DVD or BD).
For SD DVD, set it at bitstream so that it'll send a direct source sound to your receiver. Let your receiver do the sound producing/decoding.
For BD, if you're playing a PCM track, bitstream it still to your receiver to get the best sound. If playing a DD TrueHD or DTS-HD MA, set it at PCM to decode the best sound.

True, but it's nothing like having 10-15 Blu-ray discs to sell on eBay to offset the price of the PS3. :D

Yeah, I figured out why the current PS3 controller slips out of hands. It's front heavy and rear light; i.e. it's not balanced.
I just ordered a DUAL SHOCK 3 and it arrived today (from overseas). But I have to pick it up at the post office. I'll let everyone know what I think about it.

You would have to check from your TV display. Check the TV "display" or "info" button to see what resolution it is receiving when the PS3 is running. And you can't deselect 480p because the PS3 needs resolution to default to if the selected resolution isn't supported.

Yes, keep it in Normal. I'm still not sure what Double Scan does (can someone elaborate?).
But what happens if you put in another 2.35:1 anamorphic disc? Are you sure you're not accidently putting in the 'original' version of TESB? That would explain every single problem you've described.

Actually, the media center part of the PS3 is the part that disappointed me. It can't handle so many file types, half of my files are not readable by the unit and struggles with a .ts file on a USB disc (with no audio). I guess I will be installing Linux on it to get a true media center :)

Yes it upscales to 1080p and outputs 1080 lines of resolution but it is still just upscaling (adding lines from the lines already there...duplicating)...if gladiator were released on HDDVD (or bluray but won't happen) it would look a lot better.

You know what my biggest complaint is, though? Inability to properly handle (organize) the files, meaning, I have tons of music from a lot of different artists, and for some of them I have more than one album, placed in separate subfolders, and I haven't found a way to play ALL music from that artist (from all records), because I have to go to the very last sub folder in order to be able to hit Play. I would like to be able to select an artist name and have it play all files from that artist, regardless of which sub folder the files are on.
And the same goes for pictures and videos.

1)There is a "new thread button" at the top of each forum home page (just above the big blue letters NEW AVS CLASSIFIEDS NOW OPENED!
2) **From PC Mag Encyclopedia** (Super Audio CD) A high-resolution CD audio format from Sony and Philips. SACD and DVD-Audio (DVD-A) were the two next-generation digital audio formats for enhanced sound quality, but neither one caught on (see high-resolution audio).
SACD uses Direct Stream Digital (DSD) technology which provides 1-bit pulse density modulation (PDM) encoding at 2,822,400 samples per second. Each sample is a 0 or 1 (up or down), depending on its relationship to the previous sample. Compared to CD, SACD boosts frequency response from 20kHz to 100kHz and dynamic range from 96 to 120 db. See PDM.
I bought a couple SACD's so I could try them. Sounds really good actually. Shame this format has not become more popular. Do a google search for SACD CD's.
3)The PS3 is still one of if not the best BR player. It is the most technologically advanced. Do a search on this forum to find hundreds of opinions
Rambler358 12-04-07, 11:17 AM The PS3 is still one of if not the best BR player. It is the most technologically advanced.
It still has a little ways to go first. When the PS3 can provide un-decoded bitstream output, then it could be there.

Check your BD/DVD settings on the PS3 and see if you have the "DVD Upscaler" set to normal, full, our double scale. If you have one of those settings on the PS3 will upscale the DVD to 1080p.

Good point. If somebody has a receiver in the mix then you'd have to check the input resolution on that. The TV will only tell you the input resolution of the source it is directly hooked up to.
Brandon

Too bad that feature will be nearly useless in the future (Java 1.1 titles will most likely be authored in advanced mode to allow in-player mixing) and probably won't come anyway for one reason or another.
Once it gets onboard DTS MA decoding it'll be the best bar none. There will just be a lot of folks with new receivers who feel jilted because they can't light up all their lights.

You can't "bitstream" a PCM track. It's uncompressed. It's just that your HDMI setting has no bearing on the output of a PCM track. It's going to send the uncompressed PCM track over the HDMI cable regardless of your setting.
So you don't need to switch the PS3 to PCM for it to output a PCM track (leaving it on bitstream is OK), but you do need to switch it to PCM to decode a TrueHD track.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the packaging state that PotC:AWE is 1080i? I know it's been frequently reported as a typo on the packaging, but perhaps it's not. Maybe some sections of the move have been mastered at 1080i60 or 1080p30. Are there additional scenes on the home video version, or does it differ from the theatrical cut in any way?

Ok, now i'm confused <still> - I have the PS3 set to LPCM and the Denon 2808 to auto-decode and it's decoding it as Multi-Channel in using its AL24 processing - so the fancy "TrueHD" light doesn't come on (watching FF4 ROTSS). So why isn't the light coming on? IS the AL24 better/the same as TrueHD? am i not configuring a set-up on my PS3 properly?

Even though the disk contains the sound in TrueHD format, by the time it leaves the PS3 through the HDMI cable, it is in PCM format (uncompressed pulse code modulation). So, your receiver has no knowledge of what it was before and it shouldn't care either. You don't care if you download a file off the internet as zipped file (TrueHD) do you, as long as you have the unzipped file (PCM).

So by selecting TrueHD on the PS3 as the audio track, it's 'zipped' via LPCM through my HDMI cable and 'unpacked' in my receiver and even though the "TrueHD" light isn't lit up on my receiver I"m still getting the 'lossless' track?

You got it reversed. TrueHD is lossless compressed audio (similar to how a zip file is a compressed computer file). PCM is the uncompressed audio format. BDs contain audio in several formats (depending on the movie). Some movie has them in PCM, some in TrueHD and some in both and some none. When you choose a TrueHD track to play, the zipped TrueHD track is unzipped into PCM and then sent to the receiver. The receiver does not do any unpacking. It is already unpacked by the PS3. That is why the receiver says it is PCM and not TrueHD.
DTS HD will be sent as bitstream through the HDMI connection but only the core 1.5 MB/s stream not the lossless.
How do you get it to stream lossless? I'm using the PS3 w/HDMI 1.3 w/the Denon receiver that supports True HD but for True HD it says it's streaming DTS 48kHz 1.5Mbps w/AVC (video) averaging @30Mbps.
It says Multi-Channel in on the receiver (no TrueHD light turned on that's available).
Sorry for the onslaught of posts: one other query - how do you know if the PS3 is sending the movie at 24fps? I selected it 'on' from the PS3 main menu so I'm assuming if the disc supports it it'll be automatically sent (I switched the PS3 from 'auto' to 'on')

PS3 can't send out lossless audios in bitstream. Thus, your capable HDMI receiver won't able to decode the lossless audios. However, the PS3 can decode TrueHD internally & send it out as PCM to your receiver via HDMI (provided you have the latest firmware).

It's HDMI from the PS3 via 1.3a cable to a receiver (Denon 2808) that supports TrueHD etc - the receiver processes at AL24 processing sound thus my query.
sivartk 12-04-07, 09:29 PM TrueHD is lossless compressed audio (similar to how a zip file is a compressed computer file).
This is a great succinct summary. I don't much care about the "light" on my receiver and just have my PS3 set to PCM. Let the player unpack the signal and send it down the HDMI pipe :) Since the receiver doesn't "decode" anything on a lossless track, what difference does it make?
lovingdvd 12-05-07, 12:14 AM I have a PS3 and have no issue finding and selecting the TrueHD or Uncompressed PCM tracks on other Blu Ray discs.
However on TMNT I cannot find any option in the menus to select TrueHD. Under Languages it only has DD 5.1 and other language options (french etc) but no TrueHD. There is no "set up" area for this disc, and I check in the other areas like Extras but of course its not there. During playback it only shows it as "Dolby Digital" so I know I don't have the TrueHD audio going.
According to this review http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/901/tmnt.html it has TrueHD. What am I missing?? Thanks!
believer 12-05-07, 07:05 AM It still has a little ways to go first. When the PS3 can provide un-decoded bitstream output, then it could be there.
i was mainly concerned with image quality. im assuming the ps3 is near the top for this?
OK this is probably a very stupid question, but I can't find the answer in any search anywhere!!
Does the PS3 have an option to resume play a BD/DVD? I often find myself watching movies in sessions rather than in their entirety, and can't figure out how to have the PS3 pick up where I left off.
Thanks.

i just watched "Enemy Of The State" and thus far that is the only bd-movie that has resumed from a full exit. and it wasn't a fluke either, i tested it and every time it'd resume. but the super nice thing about ps3 is that you can access all of the important system features while watching a movie... whereas with hd-dvd (a30 anyways) you gotta stop playback just to get into the player menu and then you gotta go through all the fbi warning bs every time.
edit: quick thought; i've not tried this on ps3 but a way around this is to just place a bookmark where ever you decide to stop :D

Maybe this is on all Blu-ray. I'm not sure. But I have noticed you can place bookmarks in movies using the colored buttons on the remote.
Hi,
I have searched in this thread but was not able to fing an answer. I have a PS3 60GB that I use as a Blu-ray player. I have the latest Sony firmware on it V. 1.93
However, every one of my blu-ray discs (about 25) have these yellowish line coming on screen for about 1/2 a second 5-10 times per movies. It is a horizontal line that come all the way across the screen and move pass vertically through the screen about 5-10 times per movie. The movies were otherwise play fine.
Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Thank you in advance for any advice,
Paven

Isn't the firmware up to 2.01? Or is that just for the 40GB and 80GB?
are you shure you have the latest firmware because the current firmware is up to 2.0.1

I believe the resume play function works on all BDs that are not encoded with Java.

You are correct. 2.0.1 is the most current firmware for all models.
Sorry for the onslaught of posts: one other query - how do you know if the PS3 is sending the movie at 24fps? I selected it 'on' from the PS3 main menu so I'm assuming if the disc supports it it'll be automatically sent (I switched the PS3 from 'auto' to 'on')
The only way to check would be to hit the display/info button on your display. If you display is capable of accepting and outputting 24fps, it should state 1080p/24hz otherwise it will state 1080p/60hz.

which is better?
1080p/24hz or 1080p/60hz

Ahhh... the eternal question of HD refresh rates.... the only problem is there is no definitive answer at this point. In theory 1080p24 displayed natively is better. Quickly though, they both accomplish the same thing if done properly. If done improperly they can both be rubbish. At this point there are only a select few TV's that accept 1080p24 and display it properly. On the other hand there are many sets that accept and display 1080p60 properly. Notice how this response didn't answer your question.... eternal questions like this will keep avs forums alive. :)
DaViD Boulet 12-05-07, 03:51 PM If both done properly, 24p is better for 24 fps film. This is because to get a 60Hz refresh you have to add an un-even frame-repition pattern... A A B B B C C D D D etc.
With 24p or "24-interval" refresh (24Hz, 48Hz, 72Hz etc) you get smoother motion since the frames are repated in an even way without stuttering:
A B C D
A A B B C C D D
A A A B B B C C C D D D
Any of those will look "smoother" in motion than:
A A B B B C C D D D E E F F F
The uneven motion stutter we see with 60Hz playback of 24p sources come from the "3-2 pulldown" which refers to this uneven frame-pattern.
Lyle_JP 12-05-07, 04:58 PM Actually, the frame pattern for film in 60hz is more like AABBCCCDDDEEFFGGGHHH...
It doesn't alternate with one 2 and one 3, but rather two 2s followed by two 3s. The reason for this is so that if being watched interlaced, two different film frames are split over one complete video "frame" only once every 5 "frame" cycles (which translates to 6 times each second).

Good description - I just want to add that on a 60hz TV that accepts a 24fps input, the pulldown is done in the set. If you have the PS3 output @60hz, the pulldown is done in the PS3 and sent to the set @60hz.
There's a few sets that can use the 24fps output intelligently that operate in a multiple of 24 (120hz screens) that removes the judder - because the frame rate goes into 120, there is no uneven 3-2 pulldown going on.
See cnet.com TV reviews main page, which goes into 120hz sets and what they do.

I also have the HD-A2 and so compare features between BD and HD. I had been praising BD for being able to change settings and resume. Then I watched "Live Free or Die Hard" this weekend and it did not let me resume -- I was right back in the same boat as the HD player. I suppose it is a Java BD+ title. It had a weird little pattern that would display as it started.
Thanks for the tip on the bookmarking. I had no idea what the color buttons on the remote were for.

It was also revealed that the Blu-ray profile 1.1 firmware update for the PS3 is expected to be made available for download later this month.

POTC:AWE has been extra flakey today. I ended up changing some settings to get it to run. I assume that others are seeing the same. Also, btw, I assumed that the box was a misprint. It is running fine now...

EDIT: Well after reading my post, I was being flakey. I changed the setting of 1080p/24hz from automatic to ON for my KDL-46w3000 but since it isn't a 120hz panel maybe that isn't the best setting(?). I also changed VIDEO CONVERSION to VIDEO from automatic, but I have no idea what that does.
hAPPY1977 12-05-07, 06:52 PM ok for example ratatouille's blu-ray sound menu has an option for 5.1 uncompressed, what would be the best option?
the dave mathews blu-ray has a dolby true hd track, which would be the best for that?
bitstream and pcm respectively?
Yes.......
chillonhill 12-05-07, 07:20 PM Bitstream is noncompressed, lossless. PCM not as lossless (as far as I know pcm doesnt give you true 5.1 or 7.1) is this correct, or am I wrong here

Every single thing you said is false.
1) Bitstream (as related to HD DVD and Bluray) usually refers to lossless compressed formats like Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio. These take uncompressed signals and losslessly 'zip' them up to a smaller size. The reason these even exist is to take a lossless PCM file (see below) and compress them to take up less space. They can be extracted by a player or receiver to return to their original file size/resolution. There are bitstream versions of Dolby Digital Plus and DTS HD High Resolution, but these are lossy compressed formats.
2) PCM is lossless, and indeed easily can give you 5.1 or 7.1.

Thank you Sam - you beat me to posting a response. LPCM is the best option if you use HDMI and even better w/1.3 w/a receiver that can support the different formats (like my denon 2808)

I have received these coupons before but was not in the market for a PS3.
So, does anyone know if these coupons can be used to buy a PS3?

They canNOT be used for any video game hardware - it's in the small print. Even BB employees have to pay full price for PS3 and Xbox systems. From what I heard, BB and other retailers literally make $5-$10 profit on each system they sell. The profit is, of course, from games, movies, and accessories.
I almost got my answer with a search on this thread, but not quite... will the PS3 do a decent job of playing DVD-A? And (I don't think so, but I thought I'd ask) someone implied that the PS3 might even play SACDs - is that true? Thanks.

Sony and DVD-A don't mix.
The PS3, with the exception of the 40GB model, does play SACD, though you will want an HDMI receiver to get the most out of it.

Most DVD-A (or at least the limited collection i have) have tracks suitable for a DVD video player and you can still get DTS out of them, they sound pretty decent running through the ps3, no lossless audio tho
bgstewar 12-06-07, 08:55 AM Not sure if I should post this here, but anyway...I have a 50" Panny plasma with a native 720P (actually 768P). The PS3 detects my highest resolution is 1080P for some reason. I haven't had any complaints with the picture, so should I keep it at this setting? Or should I go into setup and de-select the 1080P? Best thing to do is try it and see what looks best. My guess, and it is just that, is that the PS3 is upscaling your content, depending on the source, to 1080p. When your TV gets it, it is then downscaling it to 720/768p. I would think it is best to do as little scaling as possible. But again, the best thing to do is try it and see what looks best to you.
DonoMan 12-06-07, 10:40 AM I don't think the PS3 will do 768p, so leave it as it is and let your TV take care of it.

As in leave the source unscaled from the PS3, or let the PS3 scale it to 1080p and then scale it back down at the TV?

To enjoy true HD DD and DTS MA ? Should i set the output to LPCM ? also, you can select lpcm settings...theres a bunch of them...do i select these ? or set to AUTO ?
thanks

You mean like for DVDs? I dunno, depends on the TV. I'd go with 480p out being better if it's getting scaled again anyway. For HD stuff, go with 1080p out.

Unless your source component can scale to 768p you are probably better off sending the signal to your set at it's native rate and letting the set scale it to 768p. Otherwise you are scaling the signal twice which is usually not a good thing. What I'm suggesting is the logical answer, but sometimes these things are difficult to forcast. Try both ways and let your eyes decide.

To enjoy Dolby Digital TrueHD, the PS3 decodes it internally and outputs it as LPCM. So you should set your PS3 to PCM. In terms of DTS-HD MA, the PS3 cannot currently decode it and will not send it to your 4308 via bitstream so you're stuck (like the rest of us) listening to the 1.5mbps core DTS stream.
