Picked up a PS3 yesterday and evaluating, but it sure seems to be a nice platform! Much better than my old JVC dVHS unit!
I let it "figure out" what res to use with the SXRD, and I think it came up as 720P, but I haven't verified what's actually being sent and received/upconverted. I'd think it would choose to send in 1080i rather than 720P, but not sure - it does look good though.
No problems over HDMI feed yet...

Your SXRD is 1080i or 1080p? I use the unit on my 42E2000 and 60A2000 and each time it correctly configures the 720p and 1080p setting when matching the unit to the television. You may need to manually go into the settings menu and select 1080i if for some reason it is not picking it up.
rrenaldi 12-10-06, 08:18 PM I just installed the latest firmware 1.30, could anyone explain which video output format is better? Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr or RGB?
BTW, I'm using a plasma TV.
And BTW, the Cross Color Reduction Filter option from firmware 1.10 only affects video output using regular AV cable right? Using HDMI won't be affected at all?
DaViD Boulet 12-10-06, 09:34 PM Hey guys,
OK, got the 20 gig PS3. Question. During 2 movies (one MPEG2, one AVC, one 25 gig, one 50), my PS3 frooze in the middle of the movie and just locked onto a still frame. If I press the "stop" button on the joystick I get the "really stop movie?" prompt but even after selecting "yes" the PS3 stays locked.
Only thing I can do is power it off and on again.... and then it won't repeat the problem and will play fine.
Has anyone else had something like this happen when playing BDs on their PS3?
Oh, just upgraded to 1.3 as well.
pottscb 12-10-06, 10:09 PM It should be obvious that the context of this downscaling-to-720p discussion has to do with native 1280 x 720 displays which have to downscale from 1080 anyway. The point to having the PS3 do the downscaling is that it would likely produce a better picture than feeding the 720p display 1080i and relying on its bob/weave deinterlacing and downscaling.
This is an oversimplification...
What should be happening is that you should CHOOSE what resolution the Sony outputs, that way if it doesn't output to the native resolution of the display at least the user can decide if their scaler/deinterlacer is superior to that of the PS3 (which MANY high end TVs will be)...still, it'll be interesting to see if Sony can somehow integrate this into a firmware update if its not already happening.
Penton-Man 12-10-06, 10:33 PM I just installed the latest firmware 1.30, could anyone explain which video output format is better? Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr or RGB?
Every display converts every non-RGB input to RGB in the end. Whether it is best done in the source or display varies by each combination. As a generalization, I think with most displays it turns out to be less common for YCbCr from a device to a display to be better than RGB to the display.
Bottom line, you should try both with your particular display and see which one looks best. :)

Not I.

home_theatre_man 12-11-06, 12:00 PM What I am curious about is will the PS3 take the 16/48 audio track and convert it to 24/96 LPCM like the Toshiba HD DVD player does or does it remain in native format of the audio track? In my experience thus far, the PS3 does not upsample PCM.

home_theatre_man 12-11-06, 12:15 PM During 2 movies (one MPEG2, one AVC, one 25 gig, one 50), my PS3 froze in the middle of the movie and just locked onto a still frame. Has anyone else had something like this happen when playing BDs on their PS3?Following the 1.3 update, I have experienced two playback glitches. The PS3 locked up in a manner similar to what you described four distinct times during The Fantastic Four (BD-25/MPEG-2/DTS-MA). It also refused to load The Fantastic Four twice and Kingdom of Heaven (BD-50/MPEG-2/DTS-MA) once, freezing on a gray screen prior to displaying the red "ATTENTION" screen. After manually ejecting and re-inserting the discs, they loaded normally.

DaViD Boulet 12-11-06, 12:22 PM Chase,
sounds like the same thing. One title that froze was 8 below on the other was Kingdom of Heaven.
It only has happened since my 1.3 update (though I had only had the player a few days prior to updating it).
Thanks.
Any more issues folks have noticed? Sounds like something that will hopefully get fixed with the *next* upgrade.
720P from BD PLEEEAAAZZZZZEEEE!!!!
Actually most 720p sets are 1366x768.
Whatever format you feed the TV it then has to rescale it to "768p" anyway. So it's pretty pointless to want the the PS3 scale it to 720p first, because then you are scaling it 2 times instead of just once.
DaViD Boulet 12-11-06, 01:54 PM Walk,
firstly, most DLP-based 720P front and rear-projection units are really 1280 x 720. It's true that some flat-panel displays may have 1366 x 768 resolution.
HOWEVER,
even so there is the distinct advantage of increased vertical resolution in the PS3's own 720P output due to direct downconversion from the 1080p source rather than relying on the sets own "bobbing" deinterlacing which basically takes the 1080i, interprets it as 540P, and then upscales to 720P or 768.
That's been stated repeatedly and it makes a big difference in apparent clarity of the image. It's why 720P output is important to me, and why it would even benefit owners of 768P displays.
home_theatre_man 12-11-06, 02:04 PM It only has happened since my 1.3 update (though I only had the player a few days prior to updating it).The half-a-dozen or so BD titles I tried prior to the 1.3 update all played flawlessly.

I like that the PS3 shows the audio and video information on the screen when you request it.
I just wished it showed the bit rate of the audio.
It shows 48Hz on most of the movies i'm watching but is it 16 or 24 bit?
Also, I haven't seen any 96Hz audio but I have learned that most movies are 48Hz.
Now, does 16/48 mean that it's 16bit/48Hz audio and 24/96 mean that it's 24bit/96Hz audio?
If that's the case, can 16bit audio ever be 96Hz or does it have to be 24bit for it to be 96Hz?
Also, why does 2 Channel PCM go as high up as 192kHz and not 5.1 or 7.1?
Thank You
It shows 48Hz on most of the movies i'm watching but is it 16 or 24 bit?In most cases, it is 16-bit. All but a handful of Blu-ray titles with LPCM use 16/48 due to capacity constraints.
Now, does 16/48 mean that it's 16bit/48Hz audio and 24/96 mean that it's 24bit/96Hz audio?Yes, but all modern films are mastered with 24/48 audio. The master is only downconverted to 16/48 fidelity to save space and bandwidth.
If that's the case, can 16bit audio ever be 96Hz or does it have to be 24bit for it to be 96Hz?You will never see 16/96 material. There is a small but noticeable improvement from 16/48 to 20/48 provided you have a quality setup; beyond 20/48, it is very difficult to tell the difference within the typical home theater environment, regardless of your equipment.

For the first time, today while watching Superman 2 (Bluray) on PS3 via HDMI going into my Onkyo 674 and then from Onkyo to my Plasma via HDMI-DVI (Plasma has DVI only) the screen went black and no audio for like 5-10 seconds and then it returned.
Don't know if it was the PS3 or Onkyo that caused it.
Hasn't happened again.
JyE 4Ever,
The HDMI dropouts are a known issue with the Onkyo 674. See the Receivers and Amps forum for more discussion on the issue.

Thank You for that feedback.
I was worried that it was the PS3 because the night before I had accidently left it on for 9hrs straight, I thought I screwed something up.
They're right about the Onkyo because sometimes when I switch from a movie back to the PS3 XMB I have no audio. I have to switch from one component to another on my Onkyo remote for the sudio to return on my PS3 (connected via HDMI).
Ughhh, I'm changing my hobby back to riding motorcycles at high rates of speed, much less stressfull than High Definition.
Matt_Stevens 12-12-06, 08:39 AM Visited about 6 or 7 stores over the last three days that had the Ps3 on display, hooked up to a TV that was turned off. In each case I asked about it and they said the units were non-working. Mockups. None of the stores had any idea when they would get the real thing.
Is there any word out there on when we will see more of these actually released and not just one here or one there?
I got mine last week.
They seem to be trickling in and Best Buy seems to be getting most of them. Or Wal Mart too.
You just got to keep checking, hoping to catch them right after a shipment.
You can try 1-888-BEST-BUY.

It'll continue to be one here and there into 2007. Based on their shipment projections I'd guess it'd be March or April before these things start appearing in bunches that you can walk in and see 20 sitting on a shelf.
Wife found mine by seeing the UPS truck at Best Buy and stopping off. She had just missed them at 2 other stores (walmart/best buy) the previous week.
So they're coming in pretty consistently, just in small numbers and they don't last long.

Hmmm... I was wondering about this too. In the best buy near here, the 1st 2 weeks the PS2 was released they had a display all set up and everyone was playing games on the ps3 with that demo-disk. I recently went back there and noticed that the T.V.'s were now off. I doubt that they are just sending mock up displays to be put out there, I have never heard of this, though this could be true. All the stores that were recently displaying them now have all the TVs shut off, thats a little odd.
I got my PS3 by sheer luck. I walked into Block Buster to rent Davinci code, and just asked (I know you guys don't, but do you guys even order PS3's?" The guy bent under the counter and pulled out the only PS3 they had. They said they had it for a couple of days but since no one goes in there to buy PS3's they just had it sitting around. I was the 1st and only one to ask, and I did receive :D .

The thing is we're not doing it, so we don't really have to worry about if "they" just have to flip the switch or not, its their job to dig into all this technical jargon and decide whether it would bring more income by adding extra features so people will be more willing to buy it. Sometimes they do it, sometimes they don't, like on all other electronics.
mjburton 12-12-06, 12:09 PM my son walked into a Best Buy here in NoVA (Dulles) to buy an ipod cover, and walked out with a PS3. Matt, As far as I know, the display PS3's (which are hidden behind or below the mock-ups) don't play Blu-Ray movies, so beyond movie trailers and game demo's, you probably won't get to see the BD capabilities in action. However I might be mistaken in this since those units do play game discs without any problems..

The PS3 isn't "stretching" anything... it's just displaying the image in 480i/p and you'll need to reset your display to "4x3" mode rather than the usual "16x9/full" mode for 16x9 anamorphic/HD material.
A future update may allow the PS3 to pillar-box 4x3 material in the center of a 16x9 frame so users of 480p displays that lock into 16x9 can still maintain aspect ratio (some displays lock into 16x9 full mode with any signal above 480i. That's limit of the TV though, not the PS3).

Like black bars above and below for > 16:9, Casablanca will have black bars on the left and right as part of the image data. It will still be a 1920x1080 frame.
In other words, you'll have to do something special NOT to get 4:3 displayed.

thedonn 12-12-06, 04:27 PM Anyone experience this and have a suggestion for a fix?
Last night after resetting my PS3 to factory settings per Sony, now it seems that there's less colors. Its still picture quality, but on the fading smoke graphic when going in and out of the music visualization, you can see bands of color. The best way to describe it is as if on a computer monitor set to 256 colors, and you display a fading color band, similar to the top border on any MS Windows program. I never noticed it before the reset, and now on the BD movies and especially the purple fade I see it. Later tonight Ill talk again with Sony.
Im using HDMI and the Vizio P50HDTV10A.
Resolution set to 1080i

Gary,
Obviously you don't recall that I once complained about the lack of an Anamorphic flag on next gen or that I'm a Constant Height type. :p
But as a fellow Torontonian I can forgive you that lapse. ;)
My concern when reading the original post was that the PS3 stretched 4:3 Hi Def content. I'm now aware that the OP was referring to SD content. I doubt that will find its way into my box.
Now I've got to figure out whether to go ahead and get a scaler to provide the scaling I need or wait until I see whats happening with the new pj I plan to get in the future.

is there any other kind. :)
really though.
yes a regular sd dvd.
the last ep of MASh.
the only way to change the shape on my tv mits 73831 is the format button.
somehow through ps3 hdmi it wont change the setting from full or whatever it is displaying.
the tv is steetching the image and isnt letting me switch to "regular"shape.
using my xa1 hd dvd it displays properly from the same exact input.
only 1 hdmi cable so i'm switiching it back and forth from ps3 to xa1.
i guess i'll just watch it on the xa1.
DaViD Boulet 12-12-06, 10:17 PM using my xa1 hd dvd it displays properly from the same exact input.
That's because that player is taking the 4x3 image and "pillarboxing" it inside a 16x9 frame. Is that player also upscaling or just keeping at 480p?
My older 16x9 TV would "lock" into 16x9 with any 480p image so I had to get a progressive-scan DVD player that could pillarbox 4x3 DVDs this way for the same reason.
Paul Clancy 12-13-06, 06:50 AM Only sd title I've had issue with so far in the ps3 v1.3 is the non-anamorphic version of True Lies. Film was squished vertically. Didn't think of trying the tvs wide modes. Has anyone else tried na titles? This is a title I'll be replacing with a bd version when available (Fox? This would be a great title to remaster, Arnys best by far) so not worried at all. SD na titles have always looked baaad on all players. All my other sd collection has looked outstanding on the ps3, far better than the player it replaced. Screened Fantastic 4 bd last night and it matched the best hd I've seen. PS3 continues to impress.

Thanks David,
After buying the "game machine" last night, I woke up this morning thinking "How long am I going to be able to live without Constant Height for my Hi Def source?"
Damn if I'm not already pricing scalers since I don't expect to be able to stretch Hi Def with my HTPC anytime soon.

Wait, are you referring to the drive? I picked up my PS2 on launch day as well, and it's still working. That includes after being pulled out of the entertainment center repeated times onto the floor (a good 3-4 ft drop). Hey,
I have a 42" Sony Wega as well as a projector and, in a nutshell, Oppo recommends their DV-970HD for any display 42" or smaller (I love mine) and their 971H (scaler/deinterlacer is identical to the new 981) for displays larger than 42" (DLPs suffer from the macro blocking issue on both the 971 and 981). The Oppo thread has more info on this, but this is the (over)simplified version, hope it helps.

You waited this long for an upscaling DVD player. Now that you've got the PS3, maybe you could wait a little longer? My suggestion would wait a month or so until we hear wind of what Sony plans to do with upscaling and how long it might take. If they say it should ready within a few months, then wait. If it looks like it could be a year or so out... then *maybe* that would be worth the $200 in an oppo.
I have the OPPO and it's definitely better than the PJ scaling... but I had it long before I got my PS3.

Sure... if you want to buy an HD DVD player. But $200 for an oppo is a really good price unless you want to spend $400 for upconversion given that the PS3 could end up being as good/better than the Toshiba for upconverting all-in-one once the update is delivered.

I just turned on the PS3 when I got home and it is updating to 1.31, wonder whats included with this update??
RommelB 12-13-06, 05:03 PM Since the PS3 does not upscale dvds yet, I am thinking of getting the Oppo DV-981HD upconversion dvd player. Do you think it is worth getting an upconversion player now or should I wait till Sony decides to implement dvd upconversion for the PS3?
It really depends on how often you watch dvd's. If you watch dvd's several times a week it's probably a good idea to buy an oppo now. Who know's how long it'll take before Sony allows the ps3 to upconvert. Me on the other hand don't watch a lot of dvd's and I can wait until my ps3 upconverts. regular dvd's look good on my ps3 already because I'm coming from an old Sony DVP-NC665P.
If you got a PS3, don't buy an HD-DVD. It just prolongs the format war. Odds are better of Universal flipping than Disney, Fox and Sony all flipping.
If only Blu-Ray remains, maybe the "neutral" studios will used higher bitrates for their encodes since Blu-Ray has higher bandwidth and capacity.
My 6-year old PS2 works fine. But it never got the upgrade to support progressive scan and obviously could support modest firmware upgrades at best as it had no local storage other than the memory card.
Also it never worked with DVD-Rs. I think the PS3 has a lot more capability for upgrades. Whether Sony continues to do upgrades remains to be seen.

There had been some issues reported when using HDMI and optical both, but nevermind anyway, because it's all up in the air right now in terms of what 1.31 actually does. I was reporting what had been reported to me earlier, but now it seems sort of ephemeral. And I myself haven't conducted (and probably won't have time to) any tests, so... who knows. Hopefully we will, soon. ;)

I am so envious of all those who have a PS3 to watch movies with and play with.
Green with envy, sick with jealousy, not to mention fed-up with experiencing the PS3 vicariously via the posts on this forum :)
(pls keep the posts coming btw. Hey, where are you going? Come back..)
I think I may have reached snapping-point.
P.S. I should get me some meds to make the interminable wait for PS3 to hit my shores bearable (mar 07 btw). Some people travel ahead in time (example Cartman). I suppose I could hibernate or something.

The PS3 will work great with your tv and the Blu-ray playback and functionality is very refined. I have had an absolute phenomenal experience with my PS3 so far and I would highly recommend the PS3 for BD playback, even if you'll never play a single game on it. Since you've got an upscaling player, then go for the PS3.

The only FUD here is from yourself. Sony has promised all kinds of things and haven't delivered. NA 197,000 is substantially under the projected figures - roughly 50%. So the poster has reason to be cynical. And I'm in Canada and still can't get my hands on one. Paltry and disappointing would be my description of their "North American launch." More like North American misfire.

INFO GATHERED FROM LONDON'S www.threespeech.com event with Phil Harrisson (December 12th 2006)
Playstation 3 european launch within the first 2 weeks of March 2007, as explained to me, Sony's financial year ends on the 3rd week of March and therefore they want to launch before the next finanacial year begins. Judging that UK consoles always release on a friday expect the european launch on either the 2nd or 9th of March. Though a strong hint was that they are hoping to drop the playstation 3 on the 3rd day of the 3rd month (march 3rd).
On the same day as playstation 3's euro launch SCE are to distribute there march firmware update with features including:
multi-tasking (included will be audio/video conferencing while browsing the xmb and its features/ gameplay).
new xmb display options
new animations for audio playback.
new photo album options.
playstation store auto ressume
psp remote play advanced access option (so that you can have access to your ps3's content anywhere that has a internet connection)
Firmware will be constantly updated, with the view of a tv tuner and tivo like service to be available in the 3rd quater of 2007.

RickPas 12-14-06, 01:56 PM I am thinking about a PS3 player, I have HD Dvd player for awhile now and like it, so I'm thinking of adding PS3 for the Blu Ray player..
Couple questions for my setup....I don't have HDMI I run my HD Dvd over Component, for 1080i it is fine, can I run the PS3 over component the same way for 1080i? Anyone doing it this way how is the Blu Ray playback?
Also I'm running my HD Dvd with the 5.1 analog outputs, for DD+ and Dolby True HD, Does the PS3 alow for ouput with 5.1 analog outputs?
I'm just trying to see if this would work for my setup..
I just started looking into Blu Ray and I'm getting scared by comments on the Samsung units available, and the Pioneer player is out of my price list......

Nothing to take to the bank, but that would be ideal. I love my Sony DHG-HDD500 HD DVR (basic, but works well for me). I'll need a second DVR when I build the theater. If the PS3 became a front end for a HD DVR, that would be great.

im using the ps3 connected by component to my 62' dlp. my dlp set only has 1 hdmi connection and i have my toshiba hd-a1 connected to the hdmi input. first, the PQ of the ps3 connected to my hdmi or component is identical...i've tried both connections with the ps3...looks great. theres also NO NEED to buy any high priced monster cable component for ps3. im using the same ps2 component connection i had from b4 and its works perfect. sony still sells them for the ps2....the av d-connection of the ps3 and ps2 is identical. you will love the results with the component connection. as for audio the ps3 only has 1 optical out, for toslink only. ps3 has no multi channel out like the toshiba. so you must run the sound with the toslink optical connection for standard dd or dts....the only way to get the 5.1 uncompressed soundtrack or dts-hd/dd true hd is using the hdmi connection to an hdmi v1.2 or higher receiver input.
DaViD Boulet 12-14-06, 03:41 PM Rick,
with an optional analog break-out cable you can run 1080i over component with the PS3. Be sure to order/buy that when you get the PS3 so you can watch something in HD when you get it home... the supplied analog-break-out cable only provides composite-NTSC 480i.

Thanks for your reply, but I have to disappoint you. I am one of the people how grew up with the Playstation and I am very Sony baised. I bought the PS2 on the day of the launch and as I wrote I would like to have a PS3 too. I also like to play all the great old games like the DMC series and others.
By the way I was one of the people that preordered the PS3 when it was due to launch in November and I allready payed for it. Only 50 Euros, but that is money too.
When they delayed the PS3 I got an xbox that I am not really happy with because it lacks a decent output like HDMI. I wrote about my xbox trouble in other posts earlier and I can give you the links if you wish.
That beeing said, I still feel very very disappointed by sony. The confidence I have about Mr. Harrisons statements regarding the launch is little less than 0. After all the sony staff used to tell us over and over again that the PS3 will be in the shelves in Europe in November 2006.
My statement was basically that Blue Ray is dead here in Europe, when they delay the launch again, and that is exactly whats going to happen. (If they delay)
By the way I do not even start with the fact that we do pay far more for the PS3 than Americans. We pay 600 Euros for the 60 GIG version, thats 789.24 $. (check yahoo Covert (http://finance.yahoo.com/currency/convert?amt=600&from=EUR&to=USD&submit=Convert) if you do not believe it)
If you are honestly asking yourself: Am I ready to pull 790$ out of my pocket to by a machine that
-by the time of launch will have similar graphics to an of the shelf PC for 250$?
-was delayed a few times?
-you have been promised for so long?
What is your conclusion?
I did not want to flame or something, that would be the wrong thread. Also as I said I preordered and payed allready for it. And I will be very happy when (if) I can hold it in my hands in March.
Regards
Andy_PHA 12-14-06, 09:19 PM you can order the remote now from select retailers that are importing them from Japan.

Show me this $250 PC which will play games that well.
That won't even buy a great card.
AirPlus 12-14-06, 09:43 PM Trust me in the case of a September launch you will get a PC for that money. Especially because all the high end dx9 cards will drop in prices with Vista out and dx10 compatibly. Manufacturers will clean out their stocks.
Even if prices do not drop that much, for lets say 350 you will get equal quality then.
Regards
So with processor, card, hard drive, power supply, case, etc. plus Windows, plus VAT, you're going to have a $250-equivalent PC that can play games well?
AirPlus 12-14-06, 10:05 PM I take every bet that you will get a 7800 in September next year for around 80-90 Euros (if still availble). But this was actually not my point. ;)

"With its crisp 1080p Blu-ray Disc playback, flexible, wide-ranging audio options, and mounds of other network and gaming features, the Sony PlayStation 3 is nothing short of awesome. From my perspective, the only reason someone would buy a standalone Blu-ray player instead of a PS3 is a complete aversion to videogames — either that, or the desire for a more traditional A/V form factor (that also includes upconversion of standard-def DVDs). That said, Sony's PS3 game console is one of the most exciting, well-executed home theater products I've laid my hands on in a long time. Good luck finding one!"

People stating their machine is loud need to find another PS3 and re-evaluate. There is absolutely nothing about the PS3 that could be considered loud. MY Xbox 360 is outrageously loud when playing games. Thankfully it is not as bad when playing dvds and is not bad at all when using the add-on device.
agreed. Purrs like a kitten. I have an HD-tivo and that thing sounds like an aircraft engine compared to the PS3.
It's quieter than my SD Tivo. But I've not put in any disc, game or movie, in it yet, just playing downloaded trailers and demos so far. I would think it would get louder, especially with a game which streams and taxes the CPU/GPU.
Anyone notice a difference in fan noise when it's asleep (when the screen dims to prevent burn in but the power indicator is still green, not red)?
Has it in fact been confirmed that the PS3 will pass BtB and WtW (<16 and >235 codes) over YCbCr?
I've had my box for about 3 days and have upgraded to 1.31. It has been configured to output YCbCr over HDMI.
Last night I ran DVE on it to check levels and was unable to reveal anything below or above those codes. So it appears to me, unless I am missing something, that it might be setting for VIDEO levels i.e. 16 is Black and 235 is White but anything outside of that range is clipped.
Not a deal breaker, simply a disappointment and another thing to add to the wish list. Unless I can be handheld in the right direction. ;)

Hi,
I live in France and am planning to buy a PS3 imported from Japan tomorrow; I will only use it as a BD player. My Onkyo A/V receiver is 5.1, with optical input, but has no HDMI and is not DTS compatible. Could anyone confirm me that I will be able to listen to the DTS core of the BDs in 5.1 as decoded by the PS3 if I connect the console via optical, selecting linear PCM as output mode? As far as the video is concerned, I will be sending it through components to the Mit. 5000 projector; I think that should be ok to get a 1080i signal; is that right?
Thanks so very much for the help!

When using optical output, you always select bitstream. That will give you the Dolby Digital and DTS core.
If I do that, my A/V receiver, which is not DTS, but only DD, will not be able to decode the bitstream sent from the PS3, correct?

Just curious as to why this is considered hard and fast?
I've tried both and have accepted the "hint" provided in the manual, meaning I've chosen LPCM on optical - so far my 5.1 Yamaha has had no trouble decoding what is sent to it.
My sampling as of now has been rather small, however.

Either should be fine.
I've chosen vertical as, like the sun, heat also rises, which means in the vertical situation one of the vents is on the top.
No to mention that it it looks like a waffle maker when horizontal. I suspect I am an oddball in thinking that too much of this stuff caters to the Apple inspired soft-design crowd.

you can select the "uncompressed pcm 5.1" on disks that have it. the ps3 will send it as a 2ch signal to your receiver via optical out and let the receiver apply pro logic, neo 6,etc....to create 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound. however to get the uncompressed 5.1 or dts-hd/dd tru hd sent directly to your receiver you'll need to send it via hdmi...so you'll need a hdmi equiped receiver.
Only giving out 500k copies of Talledega Nights. Don't know if that includes Japan but that seems to indicate they've shipped over 500k.

I have a dd 5.1 reciever and the ps3 connected via optical. On a Bd like Fantastic 4 which lists only a DTS track I get a DPL signal (cant really call it a downmix). Not sure if all dts disks do this. A new hdmi reciever is the next purchase.

just got a 60GB PS3 today as well from Target and did not find Talladega Nights either... well, it looks like i'll be renting it which may not be a bad thing considering the retail version is getting better reviews (???) good thing i got Tears of the Sun early this week. the movie looks great, but i guess now i understand why some people are saying blu-ray lacks the 3D look of HD-DVD. but the audio is another matter. the PCM soundtrack sounds very lively and engaging, and i've never felt this way with any soundtrack from HD-DVD, including Dolby TrueHD...
looking forward to seeing more Blu-Ray movies...
I finally got me a PS3 today, trade my Wii, 2 wii games, and some cash for a sealed 60GB. WOW!!! I have a 360 and the HD-DVD addon, so I was expecting to be similar. I popped in Resistance: Fall of Men and was blown away. For a launch title, it was amazing. My PS3 was purchased 2 days ago at TRU, and it came with Talledega Nights.. Not the best movie, but for free I will take it. The wife and I went out and got Black Hawk Down, Xmen-Last Stand, and Underworld Evolution tonight. I must say, I am really impressed. It is near Silent when playing...
I now know I want a 1080p TV. Currently have a 60" Sony Grand Wega LCD 720p and its great, but want me a 1080p now.
I either need to get a HDMI switcher or a new reciever. I know the reciever is a better option, but not sure I can afford it with all I just spent. Whats the cheapest HDMI capable reciever now? Whats the current best deal for an HDMI switch? I currently have 2 HDMI devices, but will probably have 3 after xmas when I get my upscaling DVD player.

I was expecting to rate this a 9/10 instead I'm going with 8's...the Sound is great though 9/10.
Not sure if it's My Settings...am I missing something here, any tips setting the PS3 up?
That's because Training day as a *movie* looks sharper and more 3-D than does Devil Wears Prada. Just look at the SD DVDs of the two and you'll see the same differences.
Very few movies will look as good as Training Day in HD. That's just the movie. Nothing to do with the format.
mexicanmike03 12-15-06, 11:23 PM I will admit that as a home theater enthusiast i was very critical of all the people who kept saying "Im just going to use my PS3 as a bluray player" I mean come on, what kind of a dummy actually thinks that they are going to get just as good of a picture and audio quality out of a gaming device, as they will a stand alone dvd player. The ps2 and xbox, even the 360, proved that gaming devices blow as dvd players. I must admit, I WAS WRONG. I have had my ps3 since two days after launch and i will whole heartadly say that it rivals the quality of the samsung and panasonic stand alone units. I dont believe that it is better than the pioneer unit, or maybe even the sony for that matter, but it is pretty darn close to the sony. And for 300 bones less, plus the benefit of gaming on it, i would say the ps3 is a better buy. EHT ps3 delays, however much of that time can be contributed to bluray, where completely justified. I have a pioneer 1080p plasma and the bluray player looks pretty darn good. This is not to say i wont replace the ps3 as a bluray player when the Pioneer unit comes out. But i am positive that the ps3 will be the primary bluray device in one of my rooms. Big ups to sony on this, looks like they might have got this portion of the unit right the first time. Also the free copies of movies that are coming with all the units, ps3, panasonic and other retail units for the most part are horrible presses. The only one that looked remotely good was the free copy of the fifth element. If anything that free copy of Talladega may have hurt sony initially cause people will immediatly judge the bluray player based on the quality of that movie, cause its the first thing they will watch. Lucky for most the people on avs, we know, you get what you pay for, at least in most cases.
mexicanmike03 12-15-06, 11:27 PM I currently have 2 HDMI devices, but will probably have 3 after xmas when I get my upscaling DVD player.
Just use the ps3 to upscale, unless you are going to get a high end denon or other high end unit. It has been my experience that MOST upscale units aren't all they are cracked up to be. Yes it improves the picture qualityb ,ut if your gonna vest the money in a switcher and additional cable, you might as well put it twords a better receiver that has switching and/or upscaling features

xbdestroya 12-16-06, 12:01 AM Well, not yet.
But yeah for now a workaround would be needed.
aaronwt 12-16-06, 12:10 AM I finally got my PS3 today. I plan on using it 99% of the time for BD playback. The picture is much better than what the Samsung player looked like when I had it in June. After using the PS3 for BD playback there is no way I would want a stand alone box at twice the price with less features. Now if they would hurry up and release the remote.
aaronwt 12-16-06, 12:25 AM Does the PS3 decode the DTS HD master audio? I have mine connected to a Denon 3806 and it is passing a 1.5mbs 48khz signal to the receiver which looks to only be the core DTS.
What is the recommended setting for HDMI audio?
randman 12-16-06, 03:48 AM The PS3 does not yet decode the DTS HD master audio. I heard somewhere that a future firmware upgrade is planned that will allow it to decode DTS HD. I'm not familiar iwth the Denon 3806, but if it supports HDMI v1.1, then try setting the PS3 to output LPCM.
randman 12-16-06, 04:14 AM I've watched two Blu-Ray DVDs (Talladega Nights and the Devil Wears Prada) so far on my 60GB PS3. The PS3 "froze" once while watching each of these movies. By "froze", I mean that the PS3 was behaving as if it was paused. You can still see the DVD's picture. However, selecting any of the transport commands (e.g. play, stop,
forward, reverse) had no effect. The PS3 wasn't totally frozen. I can still bring up the PS3's onscreen menu (not the DVD's menu), and traverse the menu with the cursor keys, but the PS3 did not responsed to any of the transport commands on the on-screen menu. I can also bring up the main PS3 menu by pressing the Playstation button. Then, I can turn it off, and turn it back on. No need to eject the disk. No need to completely turn off the PS3 using the main switch in the back. I just need to turn put it in standby mode and then turn it back on.
To summarize the PS3 acts as if it is frozen/paused, and doesn't respond to any transport commands. However, it isn't completely frozen, since I can still bring up the on-screen menu (not the DVD's menu, but the PS3's menu).
I am running the latest firmware (1.31). My PS3 is in a well ventilated area, so heat shouldn't be the problem. Is anyone else having this issue?
I was trying to get a PS3 before Xmas to no avail,,,, until I found this website ps3finder.com
I ordered my new PS3 from Walmart.com (very short window to get it ordered) and just got my shipping confirmation. In the words of Borat WOWWOW WEEWAH!
I also used itracker.com and was about 30 minutes from getting my hands on one from Target.
Good Luck

Several of us have noticed this. It *only* started after the 1.3 upgrade! I hope Sony is aware and plans to fix this with the next upgrade. Agreed, it's annoying!

If that's the case, then someone has probably already complained to Sony. Nevertheless, I sent an email to Sony's customer support (somewhere underneath http://www.us.playstation.com) to complain about this issue. Maybe if even of us complain, it will be higher in their priority queue of things to fix.
I got the same problem.

rcavictor1956 12-16-06, 01:14 PM I have watched Kingdom Of Heaven and Tears of the Sun since the update and have not experienced any problems whatsoever. Sorry to hear some are having problems. As painful as it will be, I will try and watch my Talladega Nights dvd again to see if this movie freezes post 1.31 update.
Aetherhole 12-16-06, 02:13 PM I was just watching 16 Blocks and it froze on me. Just had to turn off the system and turn it back on but, that's the only movie so far that it's frozen up on.
Anyway, I am posting because I noticed that the sound quality for ANY movie that is only 5.1 Dolby Digital and not uncompressed PCM or any uncompressed ones, sound very muted.
It's generally softer by A LOT when there is dialogue but, what bothers me more is it sounds like Dynamic Range Compression is on max. Gunshots in 16 blocks are no louder than the dialogue. Sound effects are very muted. I normally watch at -20dB but with the sound like it is with Dolby Digital 5.1 I have to go to -10dB and even still the sound is very limited. I noticed this also with Talladega Nights (one that came with the system). But any of the movies I've watched that have DTS-HD MA, Uncompressed PCM, LPCM, etc. sound phenominal!
Anyone else experience this????
Schlotkins 12-16-06, 02:41 PM Good day-
Quick question that I'm sure has been answered, but I can't find a good search string. From the position of JUST Blu-ray playback, is there any difference between the models?
Thanks,

DaViD Boulet 12-16-06, 02:54 PM Anyway, I am posting because I noticed that the sound quality for ANY movie that is only 5.1 Dolby Digital and not uncompressed PCM or any uncompressed ones, sound very muted.
I seem to recall reading somewhere that there was a "Dolby bug" and someone was theorizing something similar to what you're saying... that maybe there's forced dynamic-range compression on the PS3 for Dolby tracks.
However, I would have thought that playing Dolby tracks via SPDIF would have left the 640 kbps stream in tact. Are you talking about Dolby tracks that are extracted to LPCM over HDMI???
Just curious as to why this is considered hard and fast?
I've tried both and have accepted the "hint" provided in the manual, meaning I've chosen LPCM on optical - so far my 5.1 Yamaha has had no trouble decoding what is sent to it.
My sampling as of now has been rather small, however. When you set the PS3 to LPCM, you get stereo sound through optical.
The LPCM setting is only meant for HDMI users. You only get surround sound through optical if the PS3 is set to bitstream.
I was wondering how do I get back to the Main setup screen when I had a game inside of the ps3. I know when I have a movie all I have to do is hit the stop button and it takes me back to the setup screen. Any suggestions?
Aetherhole 12-16-06, 03:13 PM David, yes I am talking about HDMI. I don't even have Optical connected to the PS3. I am not quite sure what it is but, I hope they fix the problem I am noticing!

I will have to check because it sure sounds like surround to me, not stereo multiplied.
ted
DaViD Boulet 12-16-06, 03:42 PM Is the PS3 extracting the DD signal to LPCM for the HDMI or leaving it alone in native DD form? What does your receiver say... is it getting a DD stream or a LPCM stream? If it's getting LPCM, adjust your PS3 configuration to pass the DD stream natively over the hdmi rather than LPCM and see if that makes a difference.
DaViD Boulet 12-16-06, 03:43 PM Ted,
the LPCM stereo track over SPDIF is still encoded for ProLogic surround playback so you'd still get "real" surround sound with actual rear-content intended for that channel.
camarob4c 12-16-06, 03:43 PM Newbie here... I have been reading alot, but I am still going to ask.
I have a new in the box Denon DVD-1930ci player. I am wondering should I unbox and use it, or take it back and buy a PS3 as my only DVD player? I selected the 1930ci because it plays SACD. But the new stand alone Blue Ray players do not play SACD. So I either have to keep the 1930ci and buy a stand alone Blue Ray, or have both in a PS3.
My question is.... Can I count on the PS3 as my only DVD player? Pro's versus Con's? High qualitiy is the deciding factor here!

Yes I had this exact same issue one time on the playback of KOH, its only done it once though and my PS3 has the most ventilation that it can possible have. Its in no cabinet and has 1 ft on all sides for plenty of ventilation.

Hmm, hopefully this question will answer everything once and for all.
Ok so apparently LPCM is the best sound that you can get, but to get this you need to have a receiver that can accept an HDMI and decode the LPCM, correct?? I only have optical on my Onkyo receiver, so my best be is to set it to bitstream, correct?? If I set it to LPCM then I will only get stereo through my optical out right, even though from the post above it states that it actually sends out a rear signal for my speakers?? So which one will represent most what the studio intended for us to hear for us with only optical outs. Seems a little more confusing then it should be.
bplewis24 12-16-06, 05:46 PM If anything that free copy of Talladega may have hurt sony initially cause people will immediatly judge the bluray player based on the quality of that movie, cause its the first thing they will watch.
My thoughts exactly. I know from experience that when I watched Talladega nights the first night I got the PS3 on launch day I was unimpressed and was a bit nervous about my purchase. But after quickly doing some research and renting some BDs from Netflix I realized it wasn't the format. The problem is not all consumers will take those measures.

In Order to playback SACD's do you have to do this over HDMI? I will be running COmponent and optical audio connections....Yes, you can only get multichannel audio from SACD with HDMI on the PS3.
Will Sony send firmware updates by disc, if you have a 20g unit and can't run it to your computer? No, Sony does not send PS3 firmware updates by disk, although some future Blu-ray disks may include them. You can add wireless capability to your PS3 with a wireless gaming adapter -- these typically cost less than $100, perhaps $40 off ebay. Or you can just run an ethernet cable from your computer room once every 4-6 weeks to download the latest version.
Ok so apparently LPCM is the best sound that you can get, but to get this you need to have a receiver that can accept an HDMI and decode the LPCM, correct??Correct, to experience the high-quality LPCM audio, you need a receiver that can accept that audio over HDMI. Technically, there is no decoding involved.

If I set it to LPCM then I will only get stereo through my optical out right, even though from the post above it states that it actually sends out a rear signal for my speakers??You do not get discrete surround sound with stereo -- rather, it is virtual surround sound (i.e. Prologic), like what you would get with any analog channel with stereo on cable. If you want true surround sound -- which by definition is discrete -- with optical, you must use bitstream.
whotony 12-16-06, 07:19 PM re: the last one .
if i set, for example, 5th element, to the pcm track and my non hdmi denon to pcm the audio will only be a form of prologic, not 5.1 audio? yes?

randman 12-17-06, 04:58 AM My PS3 is connected to my pre/pro (Anthem Statement D2) via HDMI only. I have a 7.1 setup. I setup the PS3 to output LPCM via HDMI. The PS3 settings menu allows you to select either Automatic or Custom. Currently, I have it set to Automatic. Question is, whether I should use Custom. The Custom menu has a few choices of how audio is output (such as differences in khz numbers), and it wasn't clear which ones to select for optimal LPCM output. Or, should I just select Automatic? For now, I set it to Automatic. When I was watching Sahara (no freezing problem on this Blu-Ray disc), my pre/pro said that it was receiving 6ch 48Khz from the PS3.
Anyone have any suggestions on whether to select Automatic or Custom, and if Custom is selected, how to determine the optimal items in the Custom menu to select?
pifemaster 12-17-06, 08:15 AM I have had the Toshiba HD-XA1 for several months and have the new Pioneer BD player on pre-order @ VE. I was fortunate enough to have a close relative snag me a 60 gig PS3 from a retail store where they work (at a discount to boot) :D .
I got the PS3 yesterday and updated firmware to 1.31. I have it connected via HDMI to my Denon 4806CI then projected on to a 96" screen with a Panasonic PT-AX100U. I have about 10 BD titles on hand (Have been ordering on Amazon while I awaited the arrival of the Pioneer) and last night I watched 2 movies.
The first movie I watched was "Ice Age - Meltdown". I felt the image quality was every bit the equal to "Ant Bully" & "Corpse Bride" which I own on HD DVD. I did have the issue noted in a few previous threads where the movie locked up on me and I had to restart the PS3. This only happen once on this movie and it happened on chapter 3. Once I restarted, it played the remainder of the movie without a hitch.
I was pleased thus far, but wanted to see how the PS3 looked with a non-animated title, so I popped in "Brothers Grimm" and watched it. I have been waiting to see this movie for a while now and was not sure what to expect since it is listed on Fettastic's post at the top of tier 2. HOLY **** - If this is a tier 2 movie, I CAN'T WAIT TO WATCH EVERYTHING IN TIER 1. This movie looked great.
In summary, I feel the image quality of Blu-Ray is equal to that of HD DVD. I will continue to support both formats and hopefully they will BOTH exist for a long time.

You should be able to get long Ethernet cables from various places (CompUSA, Best Buy, Loews, etc.). A 30' Ethernet cable is below the maximum spec. length. The maximum length for a 100mbps network is about 100 meters (329 feet), and for a 1000mbps network, it is about 82 feet (for 1000mbps network, make sure you have a Cat 5E or Cat 6 cable).
I got my PS3 last Dec. 7, and it came with firmware version 1.10. It's easy enough to upgrade the PS3 as long as it's connected to a network. Latest version is 1.31.

As you note, native PCM tracks and DTS decoding seem to be fine. I did check channel levels with a DD test disc, and they all came up correctly.
Dynamics still sound squashed. It makes me wonder if something is set weird in the PS3's DD Dynamic Range Control.
My suggestion for the moment is to output bitstream for DD.

sean_w_smith 12-17-06, 02:56 PM I have a friend who works at target and heard from his wife they got some in Friday... I went there 8:00 AM Sat morning and the case was stocked with 20gig and 60 gig models.... Walked out with 60g and X-Men, Ice Age and Fight Night...
I played with it yesterday and discovered some things that I later read about here on AVS...
I have had a high def Tivo for 2+ years hooked to a Samsung 61" 720P DLP via DVI.
I am using the Tivo HDMI->DVI cable at the moment for testing... The primay use for the PS3 will be driving a Sanyo Z4 but thats not all setup yet.
I discovered the issues about the PS3 not outputting 720p on bluray in testing. I certainly would like to compare but with my high def tivo I think my DCDI in the DLP TV does a better job scaling 1080i -> 720p than what ever the tivo uses by a fair bit. Depending on your TV this may not be all bad but the PS3 has potential I think to do it even better....
No hangs or crashes yet. It updated to 1.31 within 20 minutes of setup.
Now on blue ray discs and PQ...
They look great... I only have compared two titles but from having watched OTA HD feeds and Direct-TV HD feeds for a long time I can the say PQ seems to be excellent. Those saying it looks like SD are nutz... Its looks better than my existing HD sources which look way better than 480p.
I finished reading this thread and am caught up on the info here. I can't wait for the Yellow Dog ISO to finish downloading so I can try that....
The lack of auto-play configurability is just plain LAME... I have been using XBMC for a long time and the interface there is way nicer and will remain in use for years , but with all this horespower I am excited abou what the PS/3 may evolve into. and for the moment it does run linux, play games and play HD video....
congrats to sony. I really hope they evolve this firmware. I really want to beleive they will.... MS has a big head start with the 360...

Still 100 meters for Cat6 with a Gigabit connection. We test cables all the time at work for Cat6 and 100 meters is the limit for the cables to pass on length. Now 10G or 10Gigabit(10000mbs) I believe has a limit of around 80 feet for Cat6 to pass If I remember correctly from the last seminar I was at. For a reliable 10Gigabit connection over copper you really need Category 7 cable which was designed for 10Gigabit.
stephenwilliams_ 12-17-06, 06:09 PM Okay, I bought my ps3 today. I hooked it and did a quick demo of the unit. On games it was just fine. On the included Talledega Nights BRD I noticed a dramatic difference in color. I am not impressed with the color. It looks faded. I am currently using a Samsung hlp56" DLP 720P and Pioneer Elite vsx72tx. I have a cheap tin HDMI cable ran into my receiver and a HDMI to DVI ran from my receiver to my DLP TV. Could any of this be causing the faded look in the color. I have all of my settings correct. It is down to the cables or the player.....maybe the TV?

What'sHD 12-17-06, 07:48 PM I guess timing is everything....I went to Target about 11:30 this morning, and asked if any PS3's came in, and the guy said that lady is taking the last 2!!! They got there delivery overnight and had them from 8 this morning.....Ahhhh.
I should have said something, cause when I was cashing out, I told the cashier, and she said, they are not supposed to sell more than 1 per customer.....Ahhhh
I guess I might be waiting till February for new shipments.....Ahhhhh
Rick
I feel your pain, dude. Hang in there
I experienced same issue with Kingdom of Heaven. Hope Sony has fix for this BS!!! You pay $599.00 and then this happens it pisses you off!!!
Okay, I bought my ps3 today.
Help...../Search the other threads. The Talledega Nights BD included with the PS3 is crap.
I am using the same Samsung 56" 720p DLP...Go buy some good movies like X3, Corpse Bride, Kung-Fu Hustle, etc. They all look fantastic.

How about calibrating the picture from the PS3. Every device is different. If it was calibrated to a DVD player those settings most likely won't be the same for the PS3. Plus the PS3 might be putting out a different colorspace depending on whether you are viewing a BD movie or playing a game.(It does on mine when set to auto gong into my VP50)
I just tested a japanese PS3 in my home this afternoon and encountered a problem which I have not seen referenced before. I inserted a BD (Kung Fu Hastle) in it, and everything went as smoothly as possible: no HDMi problem, wonderful sound and picture...I switched after a few minutes to the game Resistance and, after a few more minutes, to KFH again. To my great surprise, the PS3 loaded the BD again but repeatedly refused to play the movie or access any of the scenes. That is, until I realised that the PS3 had made the disc dirty and even scratched it by playing it the first time. I then cleaned the disc and it played again, but the scratches remain. These are quite visible and extend radially from the center.
Has anyone ever encountered the same problem? Do you think it comes from a possibly abnormally thick disc (I just had one BD to play with), or from the console itself?
I am planning to test it with other BDs on Thursday and I will let you know...

I'd recommend only trying one more disc, or even a DVD instead. As far as I know there have been no issues with scratching or damaging of discs anywhere (and I regularly subscribe to a malfunction thread on ps3forums.com). I haven't had any problems with my PS3 scratching anything at all. In fact the discs look like they've never been used save for the occasional half-fingerprint from the handling of the disc.
My guess: your PS3's drive may be faulty.
Brandon
Yes, I have had similar results with DD tracks, but only when the PS3 is forced to decode the DD bitstream and output PCM over HDMI.
Chase
Turn off Dynamic Range Control in the PS3. (I don't have one yet, so I can't tell you how to do it, but check the audio options.
RickPas 12-18-06, 03:07 PM Couple more probably dumb questions here.....
With the 60g unit it has wireless network and Ethernet connection, so can I just download any firmware updates over the wireless connection not hooking up any ethernet connection?
And with the 20g unit if I need to do any firmware updates can I just take the ps3 unit into my room with the computer so I don't have to invest in a 30foot or longer wire...And just plug the ethernet connection into my computer and make the updates? Do I have to have the PS3 video connections connected to do this, and can I do it on my computer?
I was the one asking the other day about how long the Ethernet wires are made...
Is there a place to read up on how to make the updates with over the ethernet or with the wireless connection, I never had to do downloads this way, my HD-A1 I get the firmware updates on disc....
Thanks again for the help...
Rick
You need a display to do firmware updates because you have to interact with the UI and approve the update.
If you set the video output to HDMI in the living room and you take it to the den and hook it up by composite or S-Vdieo, you may have to change the video output setting.
Or maybe it's smart enough to sense what kind of connection is being used.
UxiSXRD 12-18-06, 05:18 PM Finally got my 60GB!
Bought Stealth and Xmen 3 in addition to Black Hawk Down and Kingdom of Heaven I had purchased a week or two back. Also got a couple games (Resistance: Fall of Man and NBA 2007).
I am very pleasantly surprised by the speed and responsiveness of the Blu-ray player, though. I expected it to be better than DVD playback on the PS2, but not THIS good. Better than the 360 HD-DVD add-on, which I also own, IMO in it's responsiveness, which is quite a feat! Now I REALLY need to get an HDMI equipped AVR...

If you can't connect your PS3 to a network, you can download the upgrade to your PC and save it to a flash card. Then, you can take the flash card to your PS3. This is explained in the support or network section of http://www.us.playstation.com.
bplewis24 12-18-06, 05:27 PM Or maybe it's smart enough to sense what kind of connection is being used.
In order to get the PS3 to auto-detect the connection you have to power it down into standby mode, and then press and hold the touch-sensitive power button on the front of the PS3 for about 5 seconds. It'll then beep once (or twice) and auto-detect the correct output based on what is connected at that time.
Brandon
Sorry if this has been said but can I see video via HDMI but hear sound through optical?
Thanks
transws6am 12-18-06, 05:34 PM If Microsoft hadn´t been so desperate in getting the 360 to market before the PS3 they would have included a HD-DVD drive. With a DVD they are actually putting a limit on the developers. What right now seems like a major hurdle for the PS3 with it´s Blu-Ray drive cost will most likely be one of it´s biggest advantages in 3 years when games need every last bit of storage.
On the 360 side, they have painted themselves into a corner by not having a HD and providing limited disc space. We wont see the results of this just now, but multiformat games will look better on the PS3 thanks to more space for textures.
If Sony doesn't file for bankrupcy first.
UxiSXRD 12-18-06, 07:06 PM Even if Sony as a conglomerate went under (and i'm not sure that would be a bad thing), their various properties are way too valuable to just go away. You can get the different divisions would be sold or taken under new management, but the PlayStation brand is too big and well established to just shut down (unless Microsoft bought them to put them under, as they have with other... acquisition victims). I'd say the same for their TV and assorted home theater and computer electronics, as well. I wouldn't mind at all if their car audio business disappeared or if SPHE were sold (at least partially) and rebranded, for example.
If Microsoft's monopoly on the PC OS market ever goes away, they're in serious trouble, however as their Office product would quickly fall into trouble. I don't believe the Xbox brand has EVER been profitable, though, and certainly wouldn't have the gobs of money thrown at it, despite the red ink, that we've seen to this point.
Sorry if this has been said but can I see video via HDMI but hear sound through optical?Yes, but you can't experience the higher-fidelity uncompressed and lossless audio on Blu-ray through optical. Only HDMI supports that higher-fidelity audio on the PS3.
When using optical output from the PS3, you will get slightly higher quality Dolby Digital and DTS than you get on DVD, but it won't be up to the quality level of the tracks mentioned above.
DaViD Boulet 12-18-06, 07:23 PM In order to get the PS3 to auto-detect the connection you have to power it down into standby mode, and then press and hold the touch-sensitive power button on the front of the PS3 for about 5 seconds. careful! This supposedly resets all the settings to their factory-defaults as well!
I called Sony today to complain about the bug of my player freezing after the 1.3 update. He had me do just what you described above to "reset" my player to its original factory defaults just in case something I had done in the settings was the cause. I need now to watch a BD movie to see if it made any difference... which I doubt (in terms of the source of the bug).

DaViD Boulet 12-18-06, 07:37 PM Yeah... the "wireless" means wireless internet card just like with a PC (ie, replacing the need for a direct-line).

Sdallnct 12-18-06, 07:40 PM Well, while I'm working out of town, my wife called and said she stubled across a PS3 (60g) and bought it! I figured we would be waiting till next year so haven't done a ton of reading.
Now what! I'll hook it up to my newly purchased HD70 projector via HDMI (I already have the cable).
What else do I need? This is really for the kids ;) but I'll use the DVD player in my system. Does it come with a remote? Will it work with my Harmony 880? Are there one or two games that are really "must have"? My kids prefer the car racing and sports games.
Thanks in advance.
RickPas, if you're looking for reasons to get the 60 GB, consider that if you decide to sell it, the 60 GB will likely be more in demand in the used market.

I got the 20 gig, because its all they had at the moment and I wanted a blu ray player. The only thing that I wanted that the 60 gig had was the wireless connection. Well luckily I was able to run some cat5 wire from my router to my ps3 and it now has a smoking fast connection!!! I'm now glad that I purchased the 20 gig. But between the two, the wireless was what would have turned the tides for me. If I find that 20 gigs is too small, then I will just upgrade that in the future.

Yup. I had to update from 1.10 to 1.31 to get the PS3 to talk with AirPort Base Station, though. (well it would connect, but couldn't get beyond to my gateway device...)
But now it can and I'm d/l'ing the Motorstorm demo. In regards to the Blu-ray player thread, I just d/l some trailers, too. :D
watsonusn 12-19-06, 02:55 AM There's a new firmware update out - v1.3. With regard to Blu-ray, the most significant addition is that you can now select what colour format to output with - RGB or Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr. Previously they'd been doing processing with 16-bit per component RGB, but that still has short comings versus the discs' native Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr. So now you can output with the latter if your display supports it.
How do you know if your display supports Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr? I have my PS3 hooked up to a Samsung HLS-5688, & while it seems that Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr looks better than RGB overall, dark scenes are darker with less detail than RGB.
So um yeah im confused & would appreciate some advice.
Kid Red 12-19-06, 09:01 AM I watched MI3 over the weekend, sweet flick, and it froze half way thru the movie. Controls came on screen but did not function. I had to hard reboot. The movie played fine the rest of the way. I hope this is a one time thing.
Kid Red 12-19-06, 09:05 AM I've watched two Blu-Ray DVDs (Talladega Nights and the Devil Wears Prada) so far on my 60GB PS3.
Yes, I just posted above about my freeze. My fans were on, so ventilation may have been a factor, tho not in your case it appears. My movie was MI3.

Yes, if you have a wireless network and the 60GB Sony, you can use its built-in wireless capability. Or, as I mentioned earlier, you can download the firmware upgrade to your PC, copy it to a flash card and upgrade via the flash card. In this case, no network connection (wired or wireless) is needed.
I have now watched Ice Age and Kingdom of Heaven with Firmware 1.31 update and had lockup with both these movies. Called sony and reset to factory condition and no lockups with these 2 movies. It must be the firmware 1.31 update is causing this problem. Sony needs to get its s*** together.

If your display did not support YCbCr over HDMI, you would know it immediately as all the colors would be WAY off. You TV may allow for separate settings and calibration for RGB versus YCbCr. Just adjust the contrast and brightness to the settings that look best for each format.

Sony has a multi-AV out on the back of their Playstation consoles. It's a proprietary connector which can be used to output S-Video, Composite or Component cables along with stereo audio.
The PS3 also has a standard HDMI connector. For all other types of connections, you have to get a set of cables with this multi AV out connector on one end. You can go to games stores or somewhere like Toys R Us and find Playstation cables from brands like Mad Catz. I got my Playstation component video cables for less than $10. Only complaint is it's short but now with wireless controllers you can put the console close to the TV.

Question, how is the PS3 for SD playback at 480P...? I have the Oppo which does a very nice 720P upscale but my Mits hc3000 also has an excellent scaler and feeding it 480P from the Oppo and letting it upscale looks amazingly close... I have one HDMI input and util I get a switcher and some more HDMI cables I will be plugging, unplugging...

For the record, I've now watched Kingdom of Heaven, X Men3, Underworld: Evolution, and Black Hawk Down on BD and I have had no lock ups or freezes ever during playback. X Men and Underworld I've been watching since the 1.31 firmware update.

DeathStalker2 12-19-06, 08:49 PM LOL. This could be the dumbest thing I've ever done. "the screen turns black and a little disc logo appears" Well it turns out that little disc is the freaking MOON in the actual movie! My darkness was low enough so i couldn't tell that there was forest underneath it, so it just looked like a disc and blackness. OH Man....boy do I feel lame.
DaViD Boulet 12-19-06, 09:58 PM Regarding the lock-ups,
it happens randomly and is not title/disc specific. Nor is it specific to any sector of the BD movie... just random. Sometimes a movie will play all the way through. then the next day that same disc will freeze in some spot. Then the next day play.
It's not BD software related. It's firmware in the player or something to do with the PS3 itself.

Interesting. Some folks have said they didn't start getting the "freeze" problem until 1.30/1.31. If that's the case, then it must be a firmware issue, and maybe the Sony technician you spoke to just didn't know, and figured it's easiest to resolve (at the moment for him/her at least) the issue by sending you another one.
I wonder if a few of us call Sony directly, whether we'll get the same response, or different ones depending on the technician we get on the phone....
Do you know how long it will take for them to send you a new unit?

I submitted a description of this problem (very similar to above posting) last Saturday, 12/16. I got a response back from Sony the following Monday saying:
"We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced. The most

mosman72 12-20-06, 12:11 AM Are the multi-out cables for the PS2 compatible with the PS3's multi-AV out?
all av multi cables made for the ps2 will work on your ps3....sonys av multi connection port on the back of the ps3 is identical to the ps2 connection port. the standard av multi cable that sony included with the ps3 will also fit in the back of your ps2.....its all the same.
delusive1 12-20-06, 02:22 AM I have now watched Ice Age and Kingdom of Heaven with Firmware 1.31 update and had lockup with both these movies. Called sony and reset to factory condition and no lockups with these 2 movies. It must be the firmware 1.31 update is causing this problem. Sony needs to get its s*** together.
I am about to reset also due to lock ups with BR movies. How do I save my games so I don't loose them during the restore?
Thanks..
DaViD Boulet 12-20-06, 02:26 AM Mine did the same thing on 2 different movies! I played BOTH movies before I upgraded to 1.31 and had no problems. I called Sony and asked if the 1.31 upgrade had given others the same "Freeze" problem and was told he didn't know.
I then asked if another upgrade would correct the freeze and was told my unit was defective and that Sony would be sending me a box to use to send back my complete system and after they received it, they would send me a brand new unit and start the warranty from the day I receive the new unit.
Don't return it/swap it. It's not your machine. It's the firmware... the tech you spoke to didn't know.
Try resetting to factory. I can explain how if you don't know (turn the power off on the back. Hold down the power button on the front and keep it pressed... then turn on the power on the back. After about 5 seconds you'll hear a second beep and the PS3 will turn off after having just started to turn on. Now remove your finger. Now press the button again as usual to turn on and you should be reset).
I haven't had a chance to watch a movie since restoring but I'll try this week.
I just got my PS3 but no talladega nights! I see no coupon or anything regarding talladega nights. Is it suppose to be in the box? Thank God its not Lord of the Rings or some great movie like that.
Paul Clancy 12-20-06, 04:46 AM TN was only a pack in for the first 500,000 units. Sony is past that now.
vick vega 12-20-06, 10:09 AM Any links/info on where or when you can buy a remote control for the PS3 in the US? I saw a remote in Japan for one but none here or what?
Doug Schiller 12-20-06, 10:44 AM I have a question, I was watching my first retail Blu-Ray movie (I don't count Talladega Nights as a pack in.)
Is there anyway to bring up the menu while the movie is playing like HD-DVD?
I was watching the Transporter and it behaved very much like a standard DVD.
bplewis24 12-20-06, 10:48 AM LOL.
Ha now that's a classic one. But anyway, no freezes for me so far. I wonder if it's a combination of a specific setting and the firmware that are causing this issue. Anyway, XMen3 has that AVC encoding so I was curious to see how good it looked, and it looked pretty damn good. The opening scene had transfers up in the 43Mbps range, as well as the closing scene. All of the 'deleted scenes' were in HD as well.
On a side note, it was a horrible movie IMO. Great to look at, but not very enjoyable as a movie (if that makes sense). To me, Black Hawk Down is still the best movie on Blu Ray I've seen so far...and I usually don't get into movies about military combat.

Yes, just press the square button during playback and you get interactive menus while the movie plays.

What does the Reset do exactly? does it actually reset it back to v.1.1 fw?
Letterbomb 12-20-06, 12:37 PM What does the Reset do exactly? does it actually reset it back to v.1.1 fw?
You have to system restore to get it back to 1.1
I just called Sony, and as a last resort I had to system restore. Im losing all my data because of this shi* It said it would take 230 minutes to restore, im down to 120 right now. Yes..thats right, it takes almost up to 4 hours to system restore. Like a computer, it re-formats the whole hard drive.
I'll post here as soon as its done, and tell you if its really the firmware causing this. Because if that is the case, my movies should play fine because the firmware would be reset to 1.1
Ne who, Sony said I would need to send back my system if it still doesnt work after this restore. They already are sending a UPS guy to bring the boxes for me to ship it back to Sony, but I can cancel this if this restore works.
My only question now, even if this does work...how does this really solve anything? My system isnt up to date, and they wont let me play online with these new updates.
How do you preform a system restore?
do tell :)

Crap..umm I wish I could tell you. My System is still restoring, it wont let me go to the main menu, so I cant walk you through.
Its in the system setting, you go to the cross bar "System Setting"...I believe under the system settings icon there should be another small picture called "System Settings". Click that, towards the bottom their should be a "Reset System Settings" and "Restore System Settings".
This is all from memory tho, so I apologize if I got anything wrong.
Cool bud, Thanks.
Good info to know.
and you know it sucks hardcore when we can't access the store or go online gaming without current FW.
so I hate to say this but. I can't wait till she is Hax0red like the PSP.
not so I can play Homebrew crap. but just so I have more control Over her.
shes mah bitc4 :D
Letterbomb 12-20-06, 01:09 PM Yes, Im not happy about this situation at all. All my game data is now gone either way. Everything is gone.
But at least I will know once and for all, if its the fn Firmware thats causing this. If my PS3 still wont play movies after this, I wont feel so bad for sending my PS3 back to SONY for a new system, because it meant there was something wrong with my drive.
I dont want a system that has a messed up drive.
If it is indeed the same layout as psp. just pull the drive. throw it in a chassis, and dump the saves off of it. and or data you intend to keep.
I have 700 gigabytes worth of HDD space between my htpc's and externals.
If it is just the drive that is good ( for me ) I will just swap it.
Keep us posted on how they play after the restore.
Good Luck.

Yeah, I should of saved my data on something else before wiping it. The lady from Sony told me to do it then, I just wanst thinking. Oh well, theres not any great games out anyways (besides the ones I have)..so it will give me a challenge to re-do it all.
I hope its just a firmware issue, and not the actualy Blu Ray disc reader.

You have some Blu Ray movies on hand, correct? If so, can you do me a huge favor? After you restore your system to factory settings and firmware 1.1, can you try to play any blu ray disc on a tv that accepts 720p signals? The rumor was that a guy in japan (who got a ps3 at launch) had his PS3 outputting Blu Ray movies at 720p before the first firmware update, and I'd like to know if that's true.

I will do that.
If anyone else wants me to try something with my Default PS3, be free to ask.
Im at 58% 68 minutes to go, Ill post right away once I get the info.
TimothyB 12-20-06, 01:56 PM Regarding the lock-ups,
it happens randomly and is not title/disc specific. Nor is it specific to any sector of the BD movie... just random. Sometimes a movie will play all the way through. then the next day that same disc will freeze in some spot. Then the next day play.
It's not BD software related. It's firmware in the player or something to do with the PS3 itself.
-dave
I'm on 1.30 I think still.
I've watched about four Blu-ray movies so far. Of which two had this lock-up.
It just happens randomly. What's even more strange is once the movie locks up you can still bring up the blu-ray menu controls over the picture, even use the go to feature to dial in the time spot of the movie, and even then looks like it's playing according to the time still counting.
Holding the PS button on the controller gives you the option to turn off the controller or the PS3.
So far I've only watched movies alone, but if I had a guest this would be real annoying, since it takes a while to turn the system off and on and then get through all the menu and warning dialogs back to the movie.
It happened 20 minutes into one movie, and the other an hour and 20 minutes.
Letterbomb 12-20-06, 02:33 PM Well... heres the bad news.
After a 4 hour re-format...I put in the Lady In The Water Blu Ray disc. The screen went black, then went to the grey screen, and froze. I had to shut off my system with my controller.
I went to the system info, and what do you know..it says IM STILL 1.31.
So...I guess the system restore doesnt get rid of your firmware. Which makes no sense to me at all. All my data is wiped, when I turned the PS3 on, it went through the same set up I had to go through on launch day...its back to its factory settings.
Heck, I even re-set the settings, after re-storing the systems hardrive. Yet, firmware 1.31 is still on there, and my system keeps freezing.
Im really at a loss, looks like im going to have to send in my PS3, because its not playing movies.
Sorry guys, but looks like I cant check the 720p for ya.
Now the question is..how the fu** do you get rid of firmware?
Dave Mack 12-20-06, 02:39 PM Woah, Mine is supposed to get here tomorrow and now I'm spooked.
Should I just not update the firmware? But if so, can I use the PS store to download...?

Seriosuly, I dont know what to tell you. Theres a lot of people out there that claim they have no problems whatsoever. Im being honest with you, the video games play just fine. The Blu Ray movies just keep freezing, they wont even play. Well..they will play after many freezes.
When Sony replaces my system, I dont even know if I want to update my firmware, untill I know they have fixed it.
But yeah..as far as I know, you cant take off your firmware once you have it downloaded.

I was afraid of that since I figured we're most likely flashing the BIOS. Plus when you go to update firmware it says that once you update "you cannot go back to previous firmware" or something like that. This sucks because you can't access the PS network at all if you're firmware isn't up to date. Anyway, I hope your new PS3 works out better for you.

You know..im stupid. I remember actually seeing that message. So if this is a firmware issue, then were Fuc**d. Because it doesnt let you go back to the original firmware.
Im seriously at a loss now. Sony is supposed to be sending me a box so I can re-sent my PS3 back to them...but im not even sure what to do at this point.
Is this a hard drive, or a disc reader problem? Or a firm ware problem? If its just a firmware problem, and not my disc reader...would it be worth it to just wait out the freezing, and wait for Sony to put out a patch to fix this?
The games are on Blu Ray..and work fine. The movies are on Blu Ray..but wont play. I dont get this at all.

Trust me, this isn't simply a problem with the firmware being completely defective and crippling every system. I have the latest firmware and have never experienced any troubles with the PS3. The only problem I've ever had was the demo of F1 freezing during loading. Through research I've come to the conclusion that the demo has a glitch in it. So I think the reality is that there's either a combination of a problem with firmware interacting with specific systems or firmware and a combination of specific settings.

Dave Mack 12-20-06, 03:03 PM damn. I havent told the war council of my purchase yet and she was even looking at our netflix queue and seeing all the Blu-Rays but it wasnt clicking with her. I had previously mentioned "HDdvd" alot so since HD is obviously not in the term BluRay, she doesn't know. I got the sweet amazon raffle deal with no tax so I took that as a sign. But MAN, if this damn thing starts freezing up while we are watching these new "BluRay" discs than this whole purchase (unneccessary in her view since we have a critter coming...) is going to go over like a fart in a spacesuit!

Well thanks for that info. Im sure that its a problem with my system then, im just going to send it in.
Cherokee180c 12-20-06, 07:13 PM I bought a PS3, but then my 4 year old non 1080p HD RPTV blew up, so I am upgrading to a Samsung HL-S6187 1080p DLP which comes in Saturday. I had the PS3 connected through a Yamaha RV-2600 HDMI switching reciever and it worked perfect set to 1080i, but the Yamaha will not handle 1080p. Actually I am told it will still show it, but it converts to 1080i, so you lose the 1080p benefit. I was thinking of using one of the HDMI ports on the Sammy to hook the PS3 directly into the TV to get full 1080p video, but now I wonder what that will do to my audio stream. Before I could just use the HDMI for both and it automatically used MPCM on the reciever, which I understand is full lossless sound. In fact, I have actually been more impressed with the improvement in sound fidelity even more so than video quality in the BD discs, so I don't want to lose this. Will I now lose this option when I hook up the PS3 to my Yamaha receiver via fiber optic for the sound? Do I have to set the PS3 to bitstream and let the receiver do the encoding or is there anyway to let the PS3 do the encoding and just pass through the receiver like before? It seems kind of strange if I can not get the same sound fidelity via fiber optic vs HDMI for audio, can somebody clear this up for me?
Dr Fuzz 12-20-06, 09:47 PM Interesting.
They said 5-8 days AFTER they receive my unit. I have downloaded a game from Sony web site which I paid for. I asked them today what happens to the game I paid for if I send them my system. They said too bad for me, I would lose it and would have to purchase it again since there is no way to get the game to transfer to my PC to save it!
I tried to watch another blu-ray movie tonight called "Click" and for some reason it played the entire movie WITHOUT freezing once!! The only thing different this time is that I paused the movie a few times to get drinks & snacks. Maybe it is a buffer problem and if the data from the disk overfills the buffers it gets locked up and when you pause it it has time to catch up??
I will try more disks with & without using the pause to see if that changes anything because I really don't want to go through the big hassel of sending it back.

If I was you, (I have a 1080p TV and similar settings) I would allow the PS3 to be hooked up via 1080i to the receiver and then 1080i to the TV to get audio and video through HDMI through the receiver and the TV
then, many forget that a 1080p TV converts all sources to 1080p - so you are actually getting 1080p if you input a 1080i signal
you won't lose any quality -- at least thats how it works on my TV - bet its the same with yours

Muh? Negative. Hook up the HDMI to your Sammy & run an optical audio cable from the PS3 to your receiver. You can select optical audio out to run in conjunction with hdmi.
The less the video signal is up/down converted, the better. It wont be that hard to test both & see which works best for you. Youre not getting 1080p from anything but a 1080p signal, however the tv will upconvert everything into 1080p since it is its native resolution.
You should be very happy with the tv by the way. I have a sammy 5688 & love it. Although i am considering that new sub $1k mitsu projector simply for a larger screen..... I just watched Black Hawk Down yesterday & it was absolutely awesome in HD. In your ps3 settings select the Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr, it makes even more of a difference with the Samsung.

That is BS! I wonder if the reps are misinformed since it is a new product. That just doesn't seem right that there is no way for them to allow you to re-download the content with no fee. I can understand that they can't just transfer it over, but they should issue a credit to your account or something. I know that it is probably not a large amount of money, but it is the principal! ;)

I agree with you about trying to go direct to the TV with the 1080p setting as that should be superior to 1080i upconversion, but I will test. Why does Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr make any difference over HDMI, as I thought that is the component selection? My question was actually can I get lossless sound (ie PCM) output via the fiber optic cable? The sound fidelity has been amazing using the HDMI audio into the Yamaha using PCM.
By the way, I am not trying to flame the PS3, but this version update crap every other day is beginning to really piss me off. We paid $600 for a fully defective operating system. I usually only have half and hour or so to get on the system and play a game and everytime I turn the damn thing on, I have to download and install a new version of the OS again, which takes a god awful amount of time, not to mention the stupid plug in the controller part. I would say that becuase my play sessions are so far apart, I have not been able to play a game 40% of the time I boot the thing up to play. They really need to go to the Microsoft model of updates one every 6 months or 3 months at most. The worst part is their stupidity at not including a scaler chip in the hardware so we have to mannually switch resolutions. Right now my X360 w/HD DVD player is a much better piece of hardware IMHO.

Wow give me any update whenever its available, don't hold it off for 3 months thats crazy. So your saying when you go to bed at night you can't flip on the PS3 to see if it needs an update?? If it does download it over night and install it in the morning when you wake up, whats the big deal? I guess Im lucky as hell because I have a 1080P TV so I don't have to worry about all this scaling crap, and the 480p dvd playback looks real good, I think that upconverting only adds little to dvd playback, and when you watch an actual HD title, well then you will admit that upconersion isn't worth a crap.

Exactly same thing here + same demo problem
zer0cool2007 12-21-06, 11:37 AM So from what I've read I think my problem may be with the PS3's inability to output Blu-ray movies at 720P.
I've got a Samsung HLP6163W, native resolution of 720p. I've got A Dish Network HD DVR (HDMI port), an XBOX360 w/HD-DVD (VGA port), and the PS3 (DVI port via adapter) all hooked up. I run everything in the sets "Expand" mode. (720P 1:1 pixel mapping). Everything looks great. PS3 games, as well as the home screen all work in Expand mode.
However, when I play a Blu-ray disc, my only options are "Wide" (overscan) and "4:3". (With the Dish DVR, XBOX360, and PS3 GAMES, I can choose between WideTV, WidePC, Expand, 4:3 and one other mode I can't recall). I've got the PS3 set to output via HDMI, with 480p and 720P selected as available resolutions (If I add 1080i, then all PS3 functions are limited to "Wide" and "4:3").
I've tried using the HDMI port instead of DVI for the PS3, but that had no effect, which led me to believe the TV was being fed 1080i instead of 720p for Blu-ray movies, despite my unchecking the 1080i option.
Not trying to bash or turn this into a format or console war, but the 720P HD-DVD movies in expand mode from the Xbox360 look much better than the 1080i? (or am I getting 480P, since I've deselected 1080i) Blu-ray discs coming from the PS3 in "wide" mode.
watsonusn 12-21-06, 12:32 PM I agree with you about trying to go direct to the TV with the 1080p setting as that should be superior to 1080i upconversion, but I will test.
Ok i am new a this but i love researching! Yes the optical audio out will support PCM. Optical audio is still digital audio.
As for the video, i was incorrect using the phrase Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr. Its actually YCbCr, which is what is used in all digital video formats. Since the tv you have has 10-bit video processing, there is less loss of the video signal. (As opposed to 8-bit processing). "The signal has not been RGB since it left the camera or telecine. Video is stored, processed, composited, edited, transmitted, compressed and decompressed in the YCbCr domain. There is no "original" RGB signal to be had." So again, the less conversion going on, the better.
Hope that helps!

You're getting 480p for blu ray output if you have deselected the 1080i option. Unfortunately the PS3 will not allow 720p through Blu Ray playback right now. I have no idea if that will ever change. As long as your setup supports 1080i signals I'd suggest you use that.

RickPas 12-21-06, 01:05 PM I stopped in BB today and picked up a component video chord it was from React, and it was $24.99 it was an 8ft legnth and on the box it was marked PS3...This was better than the one I saw the other day for $65.00 so I picked it up, and it was the last one they had for PS3 and I looked for one that is made for the PS2 that alot of people said you can use, but they had none......
Ok, so I have my component video chord, my friend got me a 40 ft Ethernet wire, and I picked up a new surge surpressor.....What am I missing..hmmm Oh yeah A PS3!!!!!! I guess I'm being optimistic....

sean_w_smith 12-21-06, 01:38 PM Update...
Firmware: 1.32 came out today. No one knows what the heck it fixes including the sony support reps.
I have experienced the lockup watching kingdom of heaven last night...
Sony Rep says they have not been getting complaints about BD freezes. If this is not BS I urge everyone to call support. They answer the phone with 2 minutes both times I called them....
The release notes for 1.31 that were on their website are gone. Now they only have release notes for 1.1
kinda weird...
Kingdom of heaven did look fantastic.
BTW: Called back to see if I could find more info on 1.32. Rep did not know it exists or what it fixed. Their support are not very knowledgable. They claim the 720P limitation with the PS3 is a problem with the BD Discs themselves.. :)

Let me get this straight. My Samsung 46" DLP HDTV is a 720p and not a 1080p. If I were to hook up a PS3 to it via HDMI and wanted to play a blu-ray disk, it won't play? I'm a bit confused as to why the PS3 won't play blu-ray disks in 720p.
