richard korsgren 10-26-06, 04:34 PM Any product you buy at Costco, if you are not satisfied with the product, bring it back for full refund. There is no time limit. The exception is computers; there the time limit is 6 months. Of course, common sense tells a person you can not bring a tv back every year or 2 just to get a refund and buy a newer one. In general, it is the very best warranty in the industry. I have used it several times and zero problems. A person is to use common sense.
arty101 10-26-06, 06:23 PM Yikes! that's kind of interesting to hear since i shop at that costco usually. I almost returned the philips i had for the past year because of issues, but firmware upgrades seem to have fixed it for now.
Maybe the managers have gotten some internal notice to bully the latest round of TV return-ers so that it doesn't become a bigger problem in the future and help keep costs low? I know if i was bullied about returning the samsung they sell, i'd probably leave the store crying and never return to buy and return anything at that costco. (the samsung did not have the features noted on the box, and it was within 30 days).

I'm kind of gunshy about making another large TV purchase at Costco, especially at this particular location. In fact, I wanted to exchange it for a different TV (not another Vizio). But with such bad treatment, I decided not to give this Costco location my business. Instead I was planning to go one of the other 3 nearby. There are 3 others within 15 miles (SF, El Camino and Foster City), but SSF is the most convenient and not as crowded. On a separate visit, one of the managers I talked to at the SSF said they were cracking down on abusive returns. So how do they know which is legit and which is abusive? I guess they can check your return history.
I know they were looking at my return history, and yes, I was guilty of returning a GPS unit the week before, but otherwise, no other major returns before the tv. I was having problems with a Panny DVD/VCR recorder which I returned 2 weeks later for an exchange, but at the Foster City location this time. I was sweating it out thinking they might give me a hard time again, especially after returning the tv. The Foster City was courteous and efficient and only looked in the box to make sure it was there and took it right back. :) Just that I had to stand in line again to buy another one, but that's a non-issue and the cost of. I don't keep buying, returning and upgrading electronic items.
Yes, they say they have a 100% satisfaction guarantee, but they certainly can give you a really hard time on returns for big ticket items. I am not as sure about the "life time warranty" issue on tvs as one poster put it. I use to buy things that I may or may not need, especially since they get specials and only at that particular location. I would not open them and return them later if I changed my mind. Now I'm conscious of what I buy and return at Costco knowing they may be scrintinizing my returns and may give me a hard time on even legit staff, let alone a large big ticket tv. This bad experience has certainly changed my buying habits at Costco, particularly at the the SSF location. If I decide to buy another large tv from Costco, it certainly won't be from the SSF location.
Just my experience and 2 cents.
larry7995 10-26-06, 11:54 PM I drove 120 miles to Costco this afternoon, put my Vizio 46 and a Toshiba upconverting dvd player on the cart wheeled up to the cash register, handed them my MC doh! we only accept American Express! so away I went TV-less 120 miles back to the house.
8IronBob 10-27-06, 12:15 AM 120 miles?! Where was this? I mean, here the closest one is about a tenth of that, one on the east side of Cleveland in Mayfield Heights, and a west side location in Avon Lake, both about equal distance from my home.

I had a very similar experience as you had at the closest Costco to me in North Miami, Florida. My reaction is also similar to yours. I will not buy any more large ticket items at that location and in fact probably not at any Costco store. If Costco.com has the same item I will buy it there. They have always been terrific.
It obviously is up to the manager how they treat customers on returns, and most Costco managers may be good, but the one here stinks, and his attitude flows down to all of the employees at this particular location. It is a terrible place to shop. Other locations, farther away, are much better. The employees talk down to the customers and it is very common to be publicly berated for trying to return almost any item.
richard korsgren 10-27-06, 08:26 AM OK, here we go again bashing Costco. Let us move on, ok? I could put here my very good experiences shopping at Costco and so could millions of others. But this is not the place for such talk. Let us get back to talk of tvs.

I use my Visa, as a debit card, at Costco. No problems.

The problem with buying from costco.com is if you have to return it... you would have to return it to your local costco.
8IronBob 10-27-06, 09:59 AM Well, more about Costco, more this thread'll find itself on a one-way trip to Locksville.
Now, back on topic about actual televisions that I found interesting at some other stores. I was just visiting my local Sears, looking at their Protron selection. I knew that this was the same brand that they were pushing on ShopNBC, and didn't know what the quality was going to be like. For one thing, that television didn't look one bit like some of the others on the shelf. I'm usually not sold on generic HDTV brands, and usually look at the Sammys, Sonys, JVCs, Pannys, and Toshys, etc... However, I have to say, for a no-name television, Protron probably wasn't TOO shabby...
I use my Visa, as a debit card, at Costco. No problems.
If you are buying a big ticket item like a TV, it is probably better to become a Executive Member and use the Costco Amex card. You will get extra rebates and points. That is what I do. You could apply for the Amex card and buy the TV the same day.

I do the same thing and am rewarded with a $200-$300 check from American Express plus another $150 check from Costco each year. Just for using the American Express card.
MalibuRacing 10-27-06, 03:14 PM I was in HH Gregg looking at TV's today at lunch. One of my big concerns with purchasing a RPTV is bulb life/replacement. The sales guy said that thier extended warranty has unlimited bulb replacement 5 year period. Is that bull, or is it true? I tried searching on their website to find it in writing, but couldn't find any information.

Wait until the LED-based DLPs come into play, I hear that LEDs will be more of a permanent light fixture rather than the bulb that keeps burning out on you. I believe that was Samsung that was supposed to release the first LED-based DLP?
MalibuRacing 10-27-06, 03:38 PM Samsung already has the LED unit out. I just don't want to pay the premium price at this point and time. I'm sure it will come down soon. Anyway, if HH Gregg will cover bulb replacement, it is no biggie...
richard korsgren 10-27-06, 05:09 PM Hey, people, a question...Before January, I may buy a Pioneer 5070 from costco. Just wondering if the tv is doubled boxed..and comes strapped solidly to a pallet???I understand it takes 3 weeks or so to get the tv. Was the buying experience online a good experience? Also, when you buy online, there is shipping expense but no state tax..correct?

I have bought from Costco online. Sometimes getting the tracking # is difficult, but I have had no problems. Yes, you pay shipping. And you pay sales tax (at least if your state has sales tax and Costco has retail outlets in your state). If you need to return, you can return to Costco warehouse.

OUCH! That happened to me, but I only live a couple miles down the road. I used a Visa to buy it online and then when UPS delivered the TV all banged up, a return to store quickly solved that. Here's to hoping you get a good UPS delivery!!!
fourleaf 10-28-06, 12:10 PM the sony 46kdl25L1 on samsclub.com is also listed as a 2 year warranty......
not sure if this is a new thing
although with samsclub like costco its bring in your receipt and you are ok to return.

Not sure if it will fit your accord. You don't want to drive that far with the unit laid down.

Actually, I bought the same TV and I have a Honda Accord. The box did not fit in. However, we had to take it out the box and it fit easily standing in the rear seat. My drive was only 5 miles.
larry7995 10-29-06, 09:40 PM what the deal about laying the tv down. Is that just a plasma thing or LCD also? I live 120 from civilization and 130 from Costco so lying down in the back of my truck as I drive home on the interstate dodging deer and antelope in the headlights is probably not a good thing?
I carried a new in box Vizio 50" plasma about 30 miles lying on its back in a pickup with no problems. I don't know if it's advisable but I think most people tend to be more cautious than is necessary. That screen is pretty thick glass.

The Costco by me lays their new tv's on their sides and then piles more tv's on top of them. They do it all the time even thought the box clearly states not to lay it flat. I don't think it's an actual issue with the tv's, I believe it's more of an issue with the boxes. They are stronger, and therefore, more protective standing upright. They are weakest on their sides. Even though most sets are packaged pretty well these days, the screen is exposed to damage from the sides and not from the top or bottom. As long as you are not poking anything through the box, I'm sure it will be fine.
delusive1 10-29-06, 10:36 PM The following is my e-mail to Costco:
Tuesday, October 24, 2006 1:12 PM
“Hello,
I am interested in becoming a Costco Member but have questions prior to joining.
One of many advantages that Costco offers its members is your 100% satisfaction guarantee. Just exactly what does this mean?
I ask this question because I have heard and also read online that it is up to the discretion of the Store Manager is this true?
This guarantee that you provide your members is by itself a very big reason for your success and I personally would not like to be put in the position of a Store Manager’s whim.
So who trumps whom if a problem arises on a return the Store Manager or Costco"?
Thank you,
Jerry
===================================================
And Costco’s reply:
Thursday, October 26, 2006 10:16 AM
“Dear Jerry,
Thank you for your email to Costco Wholesale.
With few exceptions, Costco has a 100% guarantee on all of our merchandise.
If you are not completely satisfied with your purchase, simply return the
product and packaging, along with the receipt, if possible, to your
nearest Costco warehouse. After the 30 day period returns are up to the discretion of the Store Manager.
Please note, as of November 4th, 2002 , the return policy for all desktop
and notebook computers is six months from the date of purchase.
Six months after purchase, all computer services and technical support
will be subject to the applicable remaining manufacturer’s warranty.
We do support our warehouse managers if you have concerns about a decision they have made you may feel free to call member services at 1-800-774-2678.
Thank you,

I followed this up with another e-mail about where HD TV's fit in their return policy. Awaiting their reply.
Thought this might be of interest.

Great job!!! I been wondering about this. This answers it all. No time limit warranty is up to the store manager period. I think I will pass up on Costco.
Keep us inform on the other email!!!

I've never seen this stated in their stores. And it's certainly not the case at Costco.com -

redgtconv 10-30-06, 02:24 AM I don't think that Costco wants the bad publicity it would get by making this public, especially before the holidays. But, it is true. It is now a crap shoot as to how you will be treated at Costco when trying to return a big ticket item. It is up to the manager and the manager here in North Miami is the worst. They question you on every return whether large or small. You may be lucky and have a good manager, but they are getting less and less frequent. Giving the discretion to the manager is a clever way of changing their policy, without officially changing their policy. It's all semantics.
Costco.com is still excellent, and will help you anyway possible.
richard korsgren 10-30-06, 07:26 AM Let us not begin this again with Costco, ok? Let us discuss Plasma and LCD flat panel displays. Keep your experiences to yourself (with Costco, etc); I really do not care to read about them.
8IronBob 10-30-06, 10:01 AM Doing some running around the Sunday ads, it seems like BB seemed to have the best selection of brands overall. However, was it the televisions that are NOT advertised the best ones to grab? I have always wondered if unadvertised TVs were always better than the ones in the Sunday circulars.

Most stores will put most all tvs on sale at one time or another. It just depends on what tv you want and think is the best for you. Buying something on sale is certainly one consideration.
8IronBob 10-30-06, 11:11 AM Yeah, that's where I was going, sometimes the best sales on TVs are the ones that are NOT advertised, and when you walk into the store at just the right time, you'll walk home with that investment for 25 years, at the very least, with something that'll just get you deciding on that at the last stinking minute.

Richard,
Do you think it is unimportant for members of this particular thread to know if a very large and popular retailer has or is changing their return policy?
Most on this forum find that Costco’s return policy is unparalleled and why many have hailed it as the best around almost eliminating the need for an extended warrantee.
Going from “Lifetime Guarantee” as some have stated to 30 days and then up to the discretion of the store manager seems to me not to be trivial and worthy of being noted.
Where would you suggest that this information be posted if not on the “Costco/BB…” etc thread or would you not have this information posted at all?
Obviously I was not trying to upset anyone I just thought the information I received from Costco’s Customer Service might be important to most.

Jerry,
I for one am extremely interested in your topic and information. If this info is accurate (30 days-managers discression) much of the advantage of a Costco purchase just went away. So far I love my Vizio from Costco.

brotherman 10-30-06, 01:19 PM Jeez Richard, A LOT of people obviously want to discuss buying a panel from Costco and are very interested in ALL aspects of the purchase, not just the technical. That's why you keep seeing posts about the return policy. So please let other people use and enjoy the forum the way they see contructive as opposed to try to bully your preference using any "special" influence you may have. Thank you.

Jay,
Thank you for your interest in my original post.
With previous posts on this thread relating to Costco customers having some problems with Store Managers and me being a potential HD TV Costco purchaser I thought I would get the information straight from Costco which is what I did.
As far as accuracy goes I can only "assume" that the information I received from
customerservice@costco.com is correct.
In the meantime I still haven't received an answer concerning HD TV's as mentioned in my original post.
Thanks for your reply,

mallu2u 10-30-06, 02:01 PM If I can jump in and share my experience with Costco. My Sharp TV bought from Costco broke down after nearly a year. It took it back to them last month and had no issues returning it at all and getting money back. We're talking about $2000 tv. I firmly believe no one touches Costco's customer service period.

I shall leave this thread; hope that makes you happy. Just a last statement..the policy at Costco remains the same as it has been for years. If there is a change in the future, we will all know that at the same time. If you have a defect (not meaning abuse on your part) take it back and get full refund..no time limit..simple as that. I was just into Costco today by the way. This, of course, means you can not take anything back (including a tv) just to get a newer set, whatever. Could you do this at BB or CC..of course not. Consider the warranty at Costco just like a warranty at BB or CC..This no time limit warranty in my mind is worth $4-500. At times, you may even pay a little more at Costco but never more if you had bought the set at BB or Sears or CC, etc. plus the warranty for 4 or 5 years. At times, you can even pay less at Costco on a particular set. You treat Costco fair on this matter and they will treat you more than fair. I have taken several items back by the way. And with the purchases from Costco, I sleep very well at night. Now, I guess you can make every other message something about Costco. I wonder why nearly always Costco and hardly ever Sears or BB or CC, etc. Bottom line, Costco is, perhaps, at the top of list of retailers as far as many customers are concerned and the employees of Costco find it a good place in which to work. . As I mentioned, we get nowhere in this thread by going back and forth on this matter. Maybe one day, I will return..who can tell. I just think we should be talking here about the tvs (mostly) that are sold at Costco and BB and CC and Sears and so on. I love shopping at Costco..love those chocolate chip cookies and pecan pies very much! Enjoy!

We can talk about BOTH Richard. On another note, the cookies are indeed excellent.
BirdyMaker 10-31-06, 11:09 AM Just to get this thread back inline with the original topic, I will throw this out.
I purchased a Panasonic 42PX6U last Friday from Costco. This was/is my first HDTV. I have Directv and OTA radioshack antenna. I have not yet purchased the Directv Hd receiver so the only HD I get is OTA(signal runs from 65%-98%). When I first plugged in the TV I was searching through the different channels on Directv and OTA. I could not get any HD channels from my OTA. I played with the TV a little more and finally figured out how to makle the HD channels appear. I did that and saw my first HDTV picture from HD PBS or whatever it is called. All I have to say is WOW!
So far I am thrilled with my purchase and I wonder why we waited so long. Both my wife and I are shocked by any HD show and would rather watch any old HD show than any good SD program. Don't get me wrong, this set displays SD very well but HD just makes SD look very bad(although it really is pretty good).
The moral of this story is.......go buy a HDTV and sit back and enjoy.
8IronBob 10-31-06, 11:30 AM Walking into Sears recently, I was looking around at different models in the 32" range, and saw that Toshiba that others were talking about, and thought that actually was far superior to any Sony Bravia that I looked at. Then again, when I compare the Toshiba to a Samsung or a Panasonic, there's almost no way that there's any way that would compete with those. It's a rough and tough decision on which is best.

I'm thinking about buying a 32" LCD HDTV for the bedroom and am looking closely at Vizio's set.....I know there is a newer version coming out. I would prefer a Sony, but they are double the price of the Vizio and I'm not as critical for a bedroom set.
That being said, I just don't understand the return policy at Costco. These sets all have manufacturer's warranties. If your set develops a problem, say after thirty days, would you not contact the manufacturer and arrange repairs or replacement through them? If you can return the TV to Costco anytime you want for a problem, what is the point of the manufacturer's warranty?
This question may be posted elsewhere, and if it is, I apologize.
Can someone explain? I just don't get it.

In post 2191 which you quote (but obviosuly haven't carefully read) Woodrow said that return policy posts will be removed and not that the thread will be closed. He's the mod and he can do as he wishes so let HIM do just that-unless of course you happen to speak for him. Thank you.
On a different note, I went to Best Buy yesterday and was pleasantly surprised by the number of 1080p (LCD) panels available. Several 720p LCDs were priced very low and I think (hope) that once the super bowl is done with we will see a lot of 720p price dumping.
8IronBob 11-01-06, 11:47 AM Hmm, I've seen some models at a very reasonable rate myself at BB last weekend. I'm hoping that I can see some more breaking the grand barrier soon, Toshiba did it, now it's JVC's turn to hopefully become lower in price at BB (I believe that the LT-32X667 was under a grand a couple of weeks ago, better hope they do it again, and then some in another couple of weeks).
8IronBob 11-01-06, 12:41 PM Duplicate post, sorry...
l337hxr 11-01-06, 07:19 PM Hey guys last night I strolled down to my local Office Depot to buy paper.
I noticed that they now have a tiny section showing off some medium sized HDTVs including plasma and LCD. 32" to 42" roughly.
Anyways, I also noticed that Amazon is now also carrying HDTV sales for Office Depot because the bottom says "Availability: In stock. Processing takes an additional 4 to 5 days for orders from this seller. Ships from and sold by Office Depot. "
So what do you guys think? I can't seem to find their return policy but I think OD should have a fairly decent return policy (30days).
Plus, I rather give my business to OD than BB.
8IronBob 11-02-06, 12:22 AM Yeah, didn't Staples finally get into televisions, too now? I thought I saw some kitchen-sized LCDs being sold there, they may have gone to bigger bedroom-sized TVs now, haven't been to Staples in months...
redgtconv 11-02-06, 01:18 AM Both Office Depot and Home Depot announced about a month ago that they would be going into the flat panel tv business in a much bigger way in time for the holiday season.
And if they are selling them, then it won't be long before all of their competitors are also in that business. It is widely expected that this Christmas Season will be dominated by sales of flat panel tv's so all types of businesses are trying to get you into their doors before you spend all of your cash at BB, CC etc. With all this competition, set prices should drop significantly. Remember the most important thing to the retailer is to get you into their door. So if businesses like Home Depot or Office Depot have to sell a tv for little profit, they will, in the hope that you also buy other merchandise there.
Ships from and sold by Office Depot. "

I really doubt that you will get 30 days to return a TV from them. I bought a entry level point & shoot digital camera from them a few years back. And they plastered it with large orange stickers during checkout, that in no uncertain terms outlined their short return time for it.
Office Depot has a rather restricted 14 day return time for anything that they deem a "technology" item, which is also more or less any hardware device that can tend to fluctuate downward in price. And seeing as how PC monitors that are sold by them are also included in that return policy. My guess is, that any flat screen TV's that they sell, will also be put in that category.
As per the Office Depot website.
And also at Amazon, under the Office Depot return policy for all of their listings on Amazon.
"Technology: Because technology can change so rapidly, notebook PCs, multimedia projectors, PDAs, handheld computers, and digital cameras can only be exchanged for the same item within 14 days of purchase. Desktop computers, monitors, printers, scanners, faxes, multifunction machines, and Configure To Order (CTO) computers must be returned in their original packaging with UPC codes and with all accessories within 14 days of purchase to qualify for a full refund, exchange, or credit. Some returns or exchange requests that don't qualify under Office Depot's return policy may qualify for service or repair under the appropriate manufacturer's warranty. Call us at 1-800-xxx-xxxx (1-800-xxx-xxxx) to ask about Office Depot's Performance Protection Plans or for help in locating the manufacturer."
scoobyrox 11-02-06, 07:40 PM I bought the LC-40c32u Sharp Aquos 32" LCD. I am very happy with it. Can someone tell me if it supports 1080i? I google it but found inconsistency. Some said up to 720p, but some said 1080i. The resolution of this panel is 1366 x 768. Although I bought it on Ebay instead of Costco, I like the LCD panel a lot. Just add a cheap Zenith HDTV antenna... I was in 7th heaven. I had analog which always gave me the worst reception. The little Zenith HDTV antenna is only $20 and I have no snow screen on any channels at all. Best of all, I don't have to pay cable tv fee to get free HDTV signal. I highly recommend probably all the Aquos LCD TV.
Can someone tell me if it is best to buy a conversion dvd player or the HD DVD player for this LCD TV? How different is upconverted movie vs a HD DVD movie? Can I see dramatic differences?

I bought an HDTV-related product at CC yesterday, took it home, and starting using it. I quickly discovered it had serious shortcomings, which could only be revealed after opening the box and operating the product. So I returned it today with everything neatly placed back in the box, and I told the customer service person that I was not satisfied with its performance and design. She apologized for my inconvenience then politely charged me a 15% restocking fee, because I had opened the box and I didn't want to replace it with an exact same item. This really suks!
Later in the day, I went on their web site with the intention of adding my comments/ratings to the group of customer reviews for this item. When I tried to submit my low ratings and negative comments (factual, not emotional), their web site would not accept my submission due to "technical errors." I repeated this 3 more times, and got the same technical rejection. Next time I tried something different by giving this product the highest marks in each rating category, along with glowing comments, then hit the Submit button. This time, their web site quickly accepted my inputs and thanked me. Smells rather foul to me.
No more shopping at CC for me due to their restocking fees and I stopped shopping at CompUSA about 2 yrs ago for the same reason.
assbag69 11-02-06, 09:21 PM Regarding Circuit City, I've never had a problem returning anything with any kind of defect, no matter how small or practically un-noticable the defect was. In this case they did not charge any restocking fee- just a full refund.
It sounds to me like you discovered a defect in the product...
holyc0w 11-02-06, 09:28 PM Thank God for Costco's return policy. The buzzing on my 50px60u annoyed me way too much for me to be satisfied with the purchase. I just placed an order for a 50px600u and hopefully it'll be buzz free (or at least not as loud). If it turns out to be worse, I guess I'll just have to stick with the 60u. Whichever plasma I don't want, they're going to pick it up and completely refund price+shipping. Anyway, I guess the point of this post is...buy from Costco if you can. Anything extra you have to pay is worth it.

You could've just written a review to Amazon, even tho you didn't buy that at Amazon, it would be a bit easier to write a review in, wouldn't you say?
Does Sams Club have the Samsung HL-S6767 yet like Costco? It wa sighted at atleast one store and was $100 cheaper then Costco. Supposedly Sams club now has the same return policy as Costco.
redgtconv 11-03-06, 02:17 AM There is istill no clarity on the SamsClub warranty. No matter how many times you ask someone at Sams, you will always get a different answer. I really think it boils down to the manager's discretion. But, I have always found SamsClub managers to be very fair.
However, there is one thing for sure. SamsClub now has the cheaper prices on all tv's where they sell the same exact set as Costco. Walmart is hurting and they are determined to take sales away from everyone, including Costco.
I have always bought from Coscto, but I think my next tv will be from Sams even if the warranty period is still unsure.
8IronBob 11-03-06, 08:49 AM That's what I felt about some certain stores around here in the Cleveland, OH area. Even tho some places are too good to be true, sometimes the sales staff will probably want to toy with you, and get you a television that you may regret, and force you into something that won't be to your liking, or a warranty on one that you may not approve of...

here is the CC return policy:
Digital cameras, camcorders, desktop PCs, notebook PCs, monitors, printers, scanners, projectors, PDAs, mobile video, GPS and radar detectors must be returned within 14 days of the sale date, and (except where prohibited by law) are subject to a 15% restocking fee if returned opened or in a non-factory sealed box.
i dont know what you bought dude, but if it was a plasma or LCD tv, which is what this subforum is about, then there is NO restocking fee. a monitor means a computer monitor and does not refer to any display sold in their TV area.

Your TV supports 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i.
As to a DVD decision, that's a rather loaded question and perhaps better visited upon the DVD forum. Given the warring formats (HD vs. BluRay) and related issues (content availabilty, for one) it's probably better over there then here in the display forum. Should you choose to get some type of "HD" DVD player (either format) your TV will be able to display it in 1080i.
FWIW I'm choosing to sit on the sidelines of this format war and continue to quite enjoy regular DVD's thru my Pio 79 player to my Pio 1130 plasma.

Costco Customer Service.
Thank you again for your speedy reply.
If I might take this one step further. I see that for computers there is a 6
month return policy and for all others "With few exceptions, Costco has a
100% guarantee on all of our merchandise".
May I ask specifically about the length of your return policy for High
Definition Televisions? Where do these televisions fit in, 30 days, 6 months
or longer?
I ask this because I will be purchasing one of these HD TV sets in a few
days, hopefully from Costco. As I said in my original post "one of many
advantages that Costco offers its members is your 100% satisfaction
guarantee" and I need to know the length of your return policy for HD TV's
prior to purchasing?
Again, thank you very much for your informative reply.

Dear Jerry,
Thank you for your e-mail to Costco Wholesale.
There is not a time limit for returns on any product except computers.
Thank you,
Costco Wholesale Corporation
customerservice@costco.com
I asked the above question because their original reply to me stated "After the 30 day period returns are up to the discretion of the Store Manager" and I wanted that cleared up as far as purchasing a HDTV.
Their reply definately clears that up and should end all the uncertainty.
---Jerry---
I had a delivery from Costco and they used Bekins/Home Direct USA. There was a pink sheet attached to the box that said to inspect for broken glass while the delivery driver was there, and after he leaves it's not their responsibility. Well, he wouldn't stay even a minute without me paying him (really nice, huh?) so I said forget it and just took it the way it was. Turns out everything looks intact which is some relief. That's ridiculous that they won't take responsibility for something after the driver leaves, but then the driver won't stay even 30 seconds unless I pay him. All I wanted to do was cut the box top open and peek in at the glass but he wouldn't do it and was rude and insistent that to do that would be considered unpacking and I'd need to pay him extra for the white glove service I guess. Anyone else have some absurd situation like this? Seems a bit shady to me...you pay a bunch of money for delivery and they don't even let you verify that the glass isn't shattered. Just wanted to vent my frustration, anyway.
Update, just FYI - I called Costco and told them what happened and they said even if it was broken they would have taken care of it and picked it back up for a full refund. She also gave me a partial refund on the shipping because of the delivery situation and said that shouldn't have happened. Just wanted to update and I think they handled it pretty well.
By the way, I got the Panansonic 50px60u which I'm really excited about. It's a good jump from a 42" for sure.
Woodrow 11-04-06, 03:01 AM Their reply definately clears that up and should end all the uncertainty.

Did you point out the instructions on that sheet to him? If so, then I would have told him to call his dispatcher right then and there, and get it cleared up to inspect it before he leaves for no extra charges. Because that sheet says that he was supposed to let you inspect it before he leaves.

Delivery as was made and what the delivery driver required sounds standard and upright to me, aside from being rude about it. However, if you actually paid for delivery service that specified delivery actions beyond what was done, then it indeed would seem shady to me. My opinion is based on a few years of doing business on eBay.

Yeah, but did any of your ebay deliverys also have a pink sheet attached to the box that said to inspect for broken glass while the delivery driver was there? So no, the delivery guy did not do what he should have done. Granted he should not have to bring in in the house and set it up unless you pay for that, but he damn well should let you open the box to check for a broken panel before he leaves as long as it takes no more than 5-10 min or so. And certainly even more so, when there is specifically a warning sheet or label that is attached to the box telling you to do so.
Based on 30+ years of working in a business that also has a parts department that both sends out and receives a lot of truck shipments, oh yes they can and will let you open the box and look for such obvious damage like that before they leave.
Dan Steinberg 11-04-06, 09:34 AM Hi there everyone. I need to purchase a small sized LCD set for the bedroom, and I'd prefer to get it at Costco (where I'm a member).
I feel that most consumer electronics are built so badly these days, so for me the unlimited warranty gives a lot of peace of mind for the long term, in case something happens to the set down the road.
In this bedroom, even a 32" set will feel a bit big and dominate the room, but 20" seems to small, so I was thinking 23 or 26". Costco's website, today, has:
A 26" set by Sharp (with a DVD player built in)
23" models by Phillips and Samsung
Does anyone have any recommendations between these three models? Some criteria that are important to me
-Aesthetically pleasing when mounted on wall (which steers me towards the black laquer Samsung, I despise the "silver plastic" look of the other 2 sets
-HDMI and VGA inputs (so I am can be ready for future technologies, or if I want to hook up a home theater PC)
-Picture quality: When I was shopping for my 42" plasma for the living room, I chose a Panasonic over the Samsung because even though the Panasonic's case was uglier, it's picture quality was much, much better)
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. My local costco does not set up their TVs well or feed them a good signal, so an in person visit won't help much. Also, if anyone feels my "costco only" policy is keeping me from the perfect set, if I was willing to buy from oher sources, I'm all ears as well. But, there are so mant 26" models once you look further, I wouldn't even know where to begin.
Thanks!
redgtconv 11-04-06, 10:22 AM If you go with a 32" set with the speakers on the bottom, the footprint of the set is really not that big. In my opinion, what you think might be a little too big today, you adjust to very quickly, and a couple of weeks later you no longer think it was too big. On the other hand a 23-26" is noticibly smaller, and even though you may think it is just the right size now, again, a couple of weeks later I think there is a good chance you regret you did not get the larger size. In this case, size does matter!
dgrabel 11-04-06, 10:39 AM Agreed about CC. Went to CC yesterday with the intent of buying the 42px60 but after jerking me around for half an hour and after telling me they would price match J&R, they informed me they couldn't go that low, that they'd have to charge me $100 more because J&R didn't have the same retunr policy as them. Of course thats not mentioned anyway in their price match policy.
brotherman 11-04-06, 12:32 PM In the market for a >=42" 1080p LCD and I've been checking at the usual suspects (Costco, BB, CC, Sears etc) regularly and also comparing prices with reputable on-line vendors such as J&R.
With prices of 40" 1080p LCDs (name brand like Samsung, not Westys and Sceptres) already under 2K, my prediction is that come February '07 (after the SuperBowl) we will see name brand 46" 1080p LCDs at or under 2K. What do you all think, too optimistic or realistic?

The gloves are off in the fight for our HDTV business. Within the past month Walmart announced it was lowering prices on tv's to help overall sales. They immediately lowered all their prices at SamsClub to undercut Costco.
Yesterday Walmart issued a new press release stating that their first round of cuts wasn't enough. They are going to be reducing all tv prices, and significantly on some models. And they will not wait for the holidays.
Today, a big box retailer in South Florida, BrandsMart, placed ads showing new prices on many models. And, from what I can see, they are now undercutting the wholesale clubs, on some models by hundreds of dollars.
In addition, there is even more competition this year because of the increased presence of Home Depot, Office Depot and OfficeMax, who will all be selling many more HDTV's this year. CC and BB have not yet begun to feel the pain.
So, there's blood in the streets among retailers, and we the consumers should benefit greatly if we are all patient just a little bit longer.

speaking of which, has anyone been to Costco & seen a JVC LCD on sale?
I been calling Costco for awhile now to see if they are restocking the new JVC's that they had on their site a month back, but no go
I'm wondering if they completely dropped the JVC's all together

Polaroid? Polaroid makes high-def sets? Sorry, no way I'm buying an off name brand like that. Gotta stick with Pioneer, Panasonic...Samsung...the name brands.

Ditto that. The only thing Polaroid I care about are those cameras with the instant photo lab built-in, and you know which cameras I'm talking about, the ones that Polaroid's famous for. Polaroid TVs?! Pfft...
As for me, JVC and Samsung are the two I'm really big into, and I can see those two getting some great reviews in the near future. Those are the only two big brands that seem to have that connectivity, and the PIP options that'll actually pay off, and make the investment worth the while. May pop into Wal-Mart and/or Best Buy to look at those up close and personal.

Costco Customer Service.
If you read their website, Costco is NOT an authorized tv seller and they go on to say this is why they guarantee their tvs under their satisfaction guarantee or your money back.
brotherman 11-06-06, 10:16 AM That's why Costco offers its (in)famous return policy. Scan the thread for details as the Costco return policy has been discussed to death (Woodrow is currently taking people who post about the Costco return policy behind the toolshed  )
I too am hesitant to buy an off-name brand, with or without Costco, Sams etc return policies. Who needs the hassle?
I am sweet on the Samsung LN-S4695 46" 1080p LCD which currently streets for mid 2's - my hope is that by February it will shed $500 or so. I have had a Samsung 19" LCD monitor for my PC for 4 years now and it has been nohing short of perfect. I understand that they may have different processes, parts, countries of origin etc nowadays but the fact is that Samsung has earned my respect. Also, like IronBob said, Samsung has a great set of features.
I'm going to be buying a 50" plasma. Just a few weeks ago, Costco online listed both the Pioneer 5070 (which I was planning to get) for about the same price as the Panasonic 50PX600u. While the Pioneer's price dropped a little, the Panasonic is now $700 LESS than the Pioneer. For two tv's that each get a lot of great reviews, the prices are sure separating, and now I'll reconsider the Panasonic.
(I didn't post actual prices, so hopefully this doesn't violate posting rules???)
faceoff 11-06-06, 01:05 PM Guys - I guess it depends on your priorities - I'm in the market for a 32" LCD - seriously considering COSTCO. Assuming the same price - another (authorized) retailer will hit me up for an extended warranty - and I don't know how well they stand behind it.
Check this http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=746098
As a comparison - I just had a problem with the bulb on my Sony 42" LCD Projector I got a Sears (with the Service Contract - or whatever they call it) it took them 2 weeks to come out.
faceoff
terpnut 11-06-06, 04:19 PM I love my Panny 50px60u that I ordered in mid/late August 2006 and received in late September 2006 but wow, has the price been dropping as the holidays approach! Costco.com's customer service gave me a $200 refund before the PDP even arrived in late September. Then in mid/late October, the price dropped another $500. This time however, costco.com's customer service said that they could only do a price guarantee within 30 days of order. Despite my pleadings that I only had the TV for less than 30 days in the family room, they said there was nothing they could do.
Normally, I would write off a small price drop as a reality of modern electronics and rapid depreciation, but I had the TV for less than 30 days and the price was 24% less than when I ordered it! So, with paperwork in hand, I went to my local warehouse and (nicely) pleaded my case again. I told them I did NOT want to physically schlep the TV back to get a full refund and then have to repurchase it. It would be such a waste for both parties. The manager saw that I was not an abuser of the return policy (not trying to get money back and a free "upgrade" to a new TV) and graciously processed a "return" and repurchase--netting me over $500.
While doing the paperwork, he confirmed that there are many customers actively abusing Costco's generous return policy and that Costco's TV return policy was about to change soon. I'm grateful for Costco's return policy, but know that its abuse is causing them lots of headaches and problems.
brotherman 11-06-06, 05:00 PM I love my Panny 50px60u that I ordered in mid/late August 2006 and received in late September 2006 but wow, has the price been dropping as the holidays approach!

You did the right thing and you had every right to that refund. As for the return policy on TVs changing, they keep saying that as a deterrent but they never change it. Kind of like the old adage about a barking dog not being a biting dog ;)

I feel that the current abuse ultimately costs ME too.
8IronBob 11-06-06, 05:16 PM Without hesitation, I'd consider looking into Samsung LN-S3238D at Wal-Mart, anyone look at this television yet, and think it's of good quality?
I know I would go to Walmart for some hot dogs and buns for a Sunday football supply, but a 50" Plasma TV? :o
Anyone has experience with Walmart when it comes to such high end products? :)
TIA.
sammydam 11-06-06, 09:07 PM Wal Mart is gonna take over our lives.
Seriously, though, they do have some nice Tv's. And crap ones.
People think its not good to buy from them because thier bombarded with circuit city commercials. IM GETTING SICK OF THOSE. Sorry....but seriously, with that crappy "The Cars" song...
Jeez.
Buy yeah, go for it if you want it.
I got my 32" LCD from Sams Club, works fine, good quality.
i assume you mean the th-50px60u....................do yourself a favor and put that number in pricegrabber.......................i dont think walmarts prices are all that great, i think the hype has taken over
Thanks.
Obviously I'm not concerned with the TV itself. I'm concerned with the way they handle their goods - both in their warehouse and their shipping carriers (it's a discount store after all). Also, equally important: their customer service in general should I run into any problems with the way the TV arrived...

Temporaryscars 11-06-06, 09:32 PM The first HDTV I ever bought was a Phillips CRT 4 years ago. I paid around $700 for it and it was one of the best TVs I had ever bought.
Just stay away from the ILOs.
el_triad 11-06-06, 10:08 PM Anyone know of any 1080p LCD TV's in the 40-42 range at Costco? I've only seen the Sceptre. Everything else appears to be 720p on their website and in my local store. I want to hook this up to a htpc so getting 1080p is important to me.

At my last compnay I worked for WalMart was our biggest buyer and those bastards had the strictest rules and requests when it came to deliveries/shipments. And that was for apple sauce and drinks, so I can just imagine what the elctronic companies and drivers go thru delivery those loads

pureshot 11-07-06, 12:41 PM I have pretty much decided the Sony LCD 46 V2500 is the way to go.
I know I am not supposed to discuss specific price, but everytime I go to Costco the prices are lower by 10% than they were 2 weeks before. I like it but when do you stop waiting?
I saw a comment about "Black Friday" being a special day for Costco. Should I continue to wait on the dropping pricing? What is the history of Costco and this day?
LCD verses Plasma seems to have run out of steam with LCD winning in
Burn in
refection
brightness
1080 being affordable.
I can see these things I can't see the advantages of plasma?
brotherman 11-07-06, 01:12 PM There's 2 kinds of people: People who can afford to pay a little extra to get it here and now and people who can't afford to do that so they have to wait (I belong to the latter). While 1080p is getting affordable, 720p is threatening to become dirt cheap and dirt cheap is what we like in the good ole US of A :) While things are already heating up, my personal opinion is that the biggest price drops will be after the holiday season and especially after the super bowl. A big screen TV is a 4-5 year investment so a couple of more months shouldn't make a difference.
If you have to have 1080p, you'll probably be better off waiting a bit but I am convinced that there will be great 720p deals to be had by February 07.
The specific Sony you refer to at Costco is naturally prone to large markdowns because it's overpriced to begin with. Do some price checking on-line against Samsung, Sharp and Mitsu panels-once the Sony is within a couple of hundred bucks, it's price should normalize (you'll always pay a little extra for Sony but Sony ain't what it used to be-the main advantage I see at Costco is that the Sony panel has an 18 month warranty vs the standard 12 month).
Then again, I could be wrong

has anyone ever price adjusted?
Like say I buy a TV at CompUSA for $xxxx & in 3 weeks the price of said TV drops by a few hundred dollars.
Will the stores honor a price adjustment?
I can see how going to customer service & just having a battle with them on if they will do it.

For me a TV is usually a "till it dies" investment. I agree that if you want a 1080p TV and the prices are too rich for your blood, you should wait. They will go down.
720p TV's are no slouches, so if you are not one to have to have the latest and greatest you can get a bargain now and in the future on one of these.
Sony is making great headway in flat panel TV's and are rated highly.....so I don't agree with the "ain't what it used to be" comment. Most folks that I see going through Costco drool over the 46" LCD 1080p set there.

Check with the store about their price-matching policy. Some of the others, I KNOW, have a 30-day price match - whether it's from a competitor, or their own price.

ion-man 11-08-06, 11:46 AM Question though is whether they would price-match 'Black Friday' prices. For eg. Yesterday I called BB customer service and asked, was told 15 days. Called a store location near me and was told they would price adjust since its a special sale day. Then I went a different store and was told that they would price adjust up to 30 days, including the Black Friday price, if applicable on the item in question. So 3 different answers. BTW I'm looking to get a Th-42PX60U.

Most store will price match if you go into the store with all of your necessary paperwork ON BLACK FRIDAY. That alone might be enough of a discouragement. ;) I hate shopping on BF.
BUT, there is a major caveat: BestBuy is notorious for CLOSING its customer service departments on Black Friday. What does this mean? It means that to do a price match, you have to find a store manager and get him to do it on the spot (which may mean finding him, telling him what you want, getting into a register line, waiting in that line, then sending someone to find him again when you get to the front of the register line, and hoping that he comes quickly--or at all). But this is not a recommended strategy; stores are getting hammered with SALES on BF; they don't want to lose money on products already sold, and managers aren't often feeling very "generous."
Have fun!
8IronBob 11-08-06, 12:25 PM Yeah, that's why I'm hoping that some of these stores will have Veteran's Day Specials on some of these televisions, I mean, there ARE stores that DO advertise on Thursdays, and most likely, because of Vet's Day being on Saturday, that's another day that'll be mobbed in some of these stores hoping to score it big. I wonder what that's gonna be like now.
Revolutionary 11-08-06, 12:43 PM As an alternative to the direct route: if you
1) bought something from a BestBuy and
2) noticed that it will be cheaper on Black Friday but
3) can't get them to adjust your price, you could
4) go to Sears or another retailer with your item in stock,
5) with the ad or some other proof from Best Buy (note: Sears doesn't require it to be an "advertised price," only a "competitor's price") and
6) buy it there for the adjusted price (plus 10% of the difference at Sears).
If you are within price-match at BestBuy, then you are also within the return period. ;)
Just got the Panny 50" plasma from my local Costco (Montebello, CA) tonight. They only have two left. Very good picture, but no PC input and only one anteena input. It's kind of basic model.
I don't particularly like the fact that the VGA D-SUB connection is being called the PC input. It makes non-technical people think that HDMI cannot be used with a PC. Most PCs now a days come with DVI output. Even < $50 video cards have DVI. All you need is a DVI to HDMI cable ($10 online) and you are set. The so called PC connection is old analog VGA. I hope people with PCs with DVI output don't use the VGA connector. I am sure they are doing it though! Another advantage of the DVI-HDMI is that the monitor can tell the computer what it is and what kind of resolutions it supports. I hooked up my Power Mac G4 with ATI 9600 Pro video card to my friend's 42" 1080P Westy and my powermac recognized it as a 42" Westy and automatically selected the correct resolution 1920x1080 P 60Hz. With VGA this won't work automatically.

In some cases, the HDMI input cannot be used, for example, if your PC does not offer a resolution that the TV accepts over HDMI. Even if your PC does offer an acceptable resolution, some TV's crop off the outer edges of the image, and your PC might not be able to compensate for it.

When you buy a product at Costco (except computers) it has a no time limit warranty.
derrikm 11-08-06, 09:53 PM Has anyone bought from Costco Online? I like to know actual delivery time for your shipment.
I ordered a Panny TH50PX60U from Costco Online on 10/31/06. Their shipping policy says delivery can take up to 20 business days. It seems that their tracking mechanism leaves a lot to be desired. The information I have is as follows:
Estimated Pick Up Date ( from warehouse) 11/03/06 to 11/09/06 (was actually picked up 11/07/06)
Estimated Delivery Date 11/10/06 to 11/30/06
Just tryng to get handle on actual time I'll have to wait.
Thanks,

I've ordered from Costco online several times. Although I've never ordered a flat panel thru their website, I have ordered large items, including a treadmill. However, after ordering, I received a notification a few days later that it was shipped, and received it about a week later. I never received an estimate of delivery date ranges, particularly one that big, so I can't say that I've had an issue such as yours. Hopefully you'll receive it within a reasonable amount of time.
Hope that helps a little,
kli
8IronBob 11-09-06, 02:39 PM Well, believe it or not, I actually made a jump on a lead this afternoon, we have a JVC LT-32X667 coming our way come early next week from Best Buy. Does anyone actually have that television, and can fill me in with their experience? Is this something that I should consider keeping, or would this be a television that may find itself being restocked? I mean, JVC isn't an entry-level brand or television by any stretch of the imagination, but is JVC actually worth it from Best Buy, or was there a model from another store that has a better model than this?
May want to read this review I found. I'm in the market for a 32" as well but I think I'll wait on the new Vizio.
It won't let me post the link but it is on "Epinions"
Review from "Epinions"
Pros: Lots of connections and functions for the price
Cons: poor tuner control; poor quality control. Analog audio output disabled on digital sources.
Item delivered with non-functioning digital tuner, for both cable and over-the-air channels.
Also the analog receiver was noticeably weak even though functional.
The setup functions make using both cable and over-the-air reception very difficult -- the entire setup scan for channels must be done whenever switching the input from cable to antenna -- it has no memory. The analog and digital channel scans are combined, with no separate control, so it is very hard to say, use cable for analog and over-the-air for digital. This is simply a firmware issue, the programming is crude.
Other wise the functionality was fair, picture pretty good.
The Theater Pro color temperature button is misleading -- all it does is directly set the Theatre mode among the menu picture modes, i.e. there is no additional Theater Pro mode.
Additional defect (noted in manual) when HDMI cable input is used, no analog audio output is supplied for external amps (the headphone output is available, though, just not the monitor jacks).
Sorry. I didn't put what TV the review was for. It's the JVC LT-32X667. Hope this helps.
redgtconv 11-09-06, 10:02 PM JVC is NOT a quality brand. It used to be, but it is not anymore. Their quality control is terrible. I recently purchased a JVC receiver. After 2 months it began making popping noises. After a couple of weeks of the noise, it let out one big bang, and it was dead. When I brought it into their authorized service center, they said the insides we fried and that the unit would have to be replaced. Sounds simple but it wasn't. More than 2 months and 100 phone calls later, I finally receive a beat up, used, refurbished receiver from JVC.
Well, after 2 weeks it exploded. This time I didn't just get a bang, I got sparks flying out.
Again, I called JVC whe said to send it back, they would have to check it out and fix it or replace it. I had enough and I expected that I was not the only one that had this experience. So, I searched the internet for other reviews and sure enough 2 out 3 had their unit explode in the first month. So, I made a copy of these reviews and wrote a letter to JVC. I asked how a reputable company could be aware of the dangers of this product and not only continue to sell it new, but to continue to replace it with another one. Well, the day they received my letter, JVC called me and asked me if I would please accept a check for full payment of what I paid for the unit. I guess when presented with the evidence, they were afraid of a lawsuit. I have owned other JVC products, but never again!
8IronBob 11-10-06, 12:07 AM Hmm, curious... We've owned tube TVs from them since the turn of the century, and we've owned other products like DVD players and boom boxes, so we haven't had any complaints about them. You telling me that it's safe to start losing faith in them now? Ahh well, that was probably the only major brand outside of Westinghouse to have all those bells and whistles that I was wanting for a while. IMHO, maybe their big forte is in rear projection as opposed to LCD flat panels.
I bought a TV from my neighbor moving sale. After 2 weeks, I now experience flicker problem. I have his original receipt bought in May this year. I don't know how it can be returned that I bought half of the original price. Costco no longer carry the item. I am not Costco member... and even if I am a Costco member, does anyone know if they will refund me the money or credit back to my now ex-neighbor?
I emailed to Costco service. They replied that return is possible with a receipt. They didn't confirm if it's under someone's name.

I did a search on the forum for your JVC model-it looks like you are the only person with this model! Based on the lack of any empirical data from actual owners, you will soon be the first bona-fide AVS member who can offer a valid opinion on the performance of this panel. From your other posts you seem like a person who will put aside owner's pride and will offer an honest eval of this panel so your input is eagerly anticipated.
JVC is one of the oldest major electronics brands with many divisions, catering to the average consumer, enthusiast and professional. They share a lot of technology among their divisions and are certainly capable of producing a solid product. The question is whom they targeted with this panel and its performance will be directly proportional to their targeted end-user.
The specs look solid on paper. We are awaiting your opinion.
8IronBob 11-10-06, 01:35 PM Okay, I'll be sure to hook it up once it comes to our door this Monday, and tell you what it's like vs. the old Westy LTV-32w1 which I have now. I, for one, don't think that the features on paper look that much different from the X787/887 series, maybe Best Buy just wanted their model # different so that they couldn't price match from others that have the traditional X87 models. That's my guess, atm.

The video card must be really old for this to happen. All modern cards support the various resolutions that HDTVs support. Also, you can use software such as PowerStrip to fix the overscan and resolution problems on Windows. There are ResX and DisplayConfigX for Mac OS X. I did not need any such utilities on my PowerMac. Just plug and play. The LCD monitor did not have any overscan either. I hate overscan!!
Osteoman 11-10-06, 04:22 PM I have a Costco question. I am about to purchase the Panasonic TH-50PX600U Plasma TV. It has been on the Costco web site for a while and the price is coming down nicely. I went to buy it the other day and it is suddenly gone from the site.
Do they remove them when they are sold out or is it not coming back? Does anybody know how they do this at the Costco site?
blstanle 11-10-06, 05:32 PM Does anybody know if Costco ever sells LG LCDs? I have narrowed my choice down to a 37" Philips and 37" LG LCDs. The Philips is the one that Costco carries (37PF9631D) which is a benefit in itself from what I can tell.
Costco.com removes the items from the site when they don't have any in stock, but that doesn't mean they won't get any more. Nothing is really for sure, but the 50px60u and the 50px600u are both no longer shown. They might have some information if you try calling them, but otherwise it's a guessing game as to whether they'll get more.
mildness 11-10-06, 08:59 PM Some manufacturers web sites have newer TVs than are at Costco. When can I expect them to turn over (or is it random)?

The Panasonic tv's are one of the subjects of this years price wars and are being marked down at various retailers below Costco's price. It is possible that Costco either removed these from their site until this price war is over, or Costco has gone back to Panasonic to renegotiate a new price so that they can meet or beat these other retailers.
roachmf 11-11-06, 01:56 AM I snagged a Samsung S4253 three weeks ago [EDIT]. . I went back to the store for some price matching and with no trouble they put $220 right back on my credit card. I stopped by NH liquors on the way home to celebrate.
PatMcNJ 11-11-06, 07:28 PM Also, Costco sometimes gets models that are unique to Costco; for example I have the 42" Panasonic Plasma 6U......... (love it, no complaints)

I specifically do not want the delivery availability option to my home.
So is there anyway select to Store Pickup at Best Buy's website when there is NONE in stock at that specific store?
I was hoping the order would be sent to the store & I could then pick it up there, ANYONE please tell me if that is possible?
this will make or break if I get a new TV.
blakeas 11-12-06, 08:15 AM I am getting a plasma next week but am throughly confused at which one to buy - I want to get a 50 inch for under 2 grand next weekend. I need to get it at Bestbuy or circuit city so I can finance at no charge for a year. However, after searching here, fatwallet and avs it seems like there are so many options - Vizio, maxent, etc. I can still pricematch to BF deals the next weekend. I have cable and will be getting the HD box and tivo. Any recommendations?
Just Wait till bf you will get a name brand for under 2 grand
faceoff 11-12-06, 12:08 PM Hey all -
Finally had "the discussion" with the wife. . . LOL
Decided, if we can do it - without sacraficing quality - that we would buy from COSTCO.
Looks like the field is narrowed (at least for the moment) to the Panasonic TC-32LE60, or the Sony Bravia KDL32S20L1.
I'm pretty sure that the price difference will not be that big an issue.
Any comments?
TIA!

Ph0n33z 11-12-06, 08:34 PM Has anyone been able to verify if BB or CC will match Costco pricing?
I was at Magnolia today looking at Plasmas (Bestbuy Magnolia). I spoke with the head guy at Magnolia, and he said that they would match any stores prices for 30 days after purchase. He even specified that they would match "thanksgiving sale" pricing.
Has anyone heard this as well?

They will most likely have slightly different model #'s for sets that are essentially the same.

redgtconv 11-12-06, 10:23 PM I spoke to a BB manager in Miami and he said they do not price match wholesale clubs or online retailers. It even says so in their printed price match policy. If you are being told differently, make him put it in writing, otherwise he is just trying to get into their store on BF before you go to Costco.

In BB and other chains, the manager has the final say on pricing and making 'deals'. It is good business not to turn down a profit of..say..$500 on an item.
Marathon Mike 11-13-06, 03:31 PM One of my local Best Buys matched the Costco price from an ad I printed. He said the model number was different and I explain that the specs were identical, only difference was the color, which meant different model number. It knocked the price down $100 or so.
Carioca_FL 11-14-06, 09:03 AM I was at Costco yesterday to check out their TVs and noticed that the familiar large orange boxes from Vizio's 50" plasma were missing -only had a few 42" plasmas and tons of 42"/46" LCDs from Vizio.
Asking their stock manager (who luckily was on the floor and was quite helpful) he mentioned they won't be ordering any additional 50" for some time -until Vizio comes out with a new line.
Anyone has any more information on this? I've emailed Vizio inquiring about this, hopefully they can give some more details.

seattlite 11-14-06, 10:04 AM Circuit City's extended warranty, although pricey, has a ONE dead pixel return policy. I called two different stores and they both mentioned the same ONE dead pixel return policy. Can anyone confirm or provide comments on Circuits City's extended warranty?

One of my wife's co-workers recommended the site and I ordered a Pansonic TH-42PX60U from them on Saturday. I also ordered a 2-year in-home maintenance package that was relatively cheap.
Yesterday, I got an email directing me to fax a copy of a credit card statement, a utility bill and a photo ID to BestBuyPlasma. All of the documents had to be complete with no items blacked out. My email response to them does not meet this forum's guidelines on politeness. Today, I phoned them and got the curt reply, "That's our company's policy." I asked why. The answer, "Security." My response, "I work in the security business, nice try." Again, "That's our company's policy." My response, "Please cancel the order." Their response (sullen tone emphasized), "We'll send an e-mail verifying the cancellation." No remorse, no attempt to placate me or even try to change my mind. I forwarded this info to a friend in the FBI and he had the same reaction I did.
2 questions:
Has anybody ever run into something like this that was legit? I've bought hundreds of things on the internet including some high ticket ski gear and never, ever had any vendor request this type of info. Just checking to see if I missed something recently.
I heard a CR report that stated that with the reliability of the newer TV's, extended maintenance warranties are generally a waste of money. Is this also true for items purchased over the net? Seems to be more applicable if you have to ship items back and forth in the event something does go wrong...the cost of the extended warrantee on this item was about the same as the shipping.
Thanks.
swedrows 11-14-06, 04:54 PM I have a Costco question. I am about to purchase the Panasonic TH-50PX600U Plasma TV. It has been on the Costco web site for a while and the price is coming down nicely. I went to buy it the other day and it is suddenly gone from the site.
Do they remove them when they are sold out or is it not coming back? Does anybody know how they do this at the Costco site?
the Panasonic 50PX600U is now BACK IN STOCK on the Costco website. It seems that they just pull them off the website when they don't have any more in stock instead of marking them as "out of stock".
i know that currently panasonic is offering a $200 mail in rebate for delivery and installation on most of their plasmas. the fine print says that it can be applied to shipping costs and/or intstalltation costs. does anybody know if you can apply this rebate if you buy a panasonic plasma from the costco website? the rebate says they only honor end-users and not ditributers, wholesalers or clubs...but that just means they won't honor rebates that a club or distributer sends in, but if you buy from a distributer like costco, then you should be okay with the rebate...is this correct? anyone have any insight on these types of rebates?

8IronBob 11-15-06, 11:16 AM I did a search on the forum for your JVC model-it looks like you are the only person with this model!
Just hooked it in two days ago, because Best Buy just delivered it to my home on Monday afternoon. I love all the bells and whistles that JVC provides for their televisions. All the different video modes, all the nice connectivity on it, and the black cabinet with the silver frame around it, it's all good. Plus, the SD quality is awesome on this, as well as HD. I love that Genessa processor, and what it can do for SD channels. No dead pixels, the PQ is great all across the board (just love that Theater Pro picture). The black levels are better than the old Westy, and there's four various video status modes Standard, Theater, Dynamic, and Game. I won't go bored with THIS set, that much I can tell ya.
Also, I don't know that JVC disclosed the lamp life on the television, would I expect this to last the same amount of time of a normal LCD (50k - 60k hrs.)?

Just because you have had a good experience with 1 product for a few months doesn't mean that they are a good company or that all of their products are good either. For your sake, I hope you do not have a problem with that product. If you do, you will then find out exatly what type of company you are dealing with.

I think that LCD lifespan nowdays is somewhat moot. Don't know how true the 50K-60K hour estimate is but even at half that you'd get 10 years of 6-hour a day usage.
Your report on SD quality is very encouranging. IMO, people get excited about the HD quality initially but end up watching an awful lot of SD on their panels (by necessity, not by choice). SD material in one form or another will be with us for at least a few more years so it's a very important practical measure of a panel's value.
I've always viewed JVC's products as solid (if unspectacular) at very decent prices so JVC may be a happy medium between value and elite brands.
Please give us a long(er) term eval as your time permits.

Very true, JVC is a very large company with several divisions so some disparity in quality is expected between their product lines (but isn't that true with cars as well? Look at Benz).
I also agree that being able to resolve a problem with a product in a timely and consumer-friendy fashion is a big factor when evaluating a company. I never had to deal with JVC for problem resolution but I personally had adventures I don't care to repeat with Sony (their flagship ES line no less).

Yes - please do. Right now - I'm between Panasonic, Toshiba, and Vizio - because Costco sells them - or - the JVC.
Someone - in another thread said that there was a review somewhere - and that the JVC was the only panel that could pass the deinterlase test. Can someone point to the review - or explain what it means (in English).

What are the chances that Costco will be getting PS3s on launch day?
If they are, it certainly won't any great number of them. Because it looks like BB and CC are getting the bulk of them when you break it down to who gets how many, and even they are saying it will probably be only 15-20 units per store. And seeing how Sony's initial shipment of them is only around 400,000 units, that means just about everyone else is left with the scraps after BB and CC gets their allotments.
As per http://www.twice.com/article/CA6391705.html?nid=2402
"Retailers are as frustrated as their customers over Sony’s slim allocations of PlayStation 3 consoles, and are variously responding with resignation, launch promotions, or disregard."
"Other dealers will make due with less. Michael Perlman, president/CEO of BrandsMart U.S.A., who will also sell the systems on a first-come, first-served basis, expects to blow through his 600 pieces in minutes. “That’s not a lot of consoles for eight stores,” he said. “But the second round’s not far behind.”"

I never buy anything from an online retailer without checking them out on resellerratings.com. Here's the page on BestBuyPlasma: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller4575.html
That's a pretty mediocre lifetime rating (5.56/10) and a miserable last 6 month rating (0.00.10), and there are very few recent reviews (only 2 in the past 6 months). My own rule of thumb is that I won't think of using an online retailer that I'm not very familiar with unless they're at a score of at least 8 with enough ratings to feel comfortable that the score is legitimate. BestBuyPlasma would fail on all counts.
Compare that rating to the rating for forum sponsor VisualApex: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller8539.html
VisualApex has a lifetime and 6 month rating of 10/10 based on 54 lifetime ratings and 31 in the past 6 months.
bestbuyplasma is just another fly by night brooklyn company that operates out of a rent controlled government apartment somehwere and is a front for a terrorist organization. just stay away from ANY place that has a BROOKLYN address and that is closed on SATURDAY and open on SUNDAY....otherwise, a fool and their money are soon parted. and any positives they have are plants, not real customers.
dsilver668 11-16-06, 07:16 PM Actually not all New York stores ar ethe same. J&R I have had very good luck with. they actually do have a huge store in New York. As far as other people I can't vouch for them at all.
Of course any place that tells you to call them back to confirm your order is one of these shops. Then again if you don't mind waiting and play their game you might just get through it unscathed, but it is a matter of choice.
i am not talking about established retail places like J and R. I am talking about the 80% of fly by night places that show up when you check prices on sites like epinions.com
Also, any place that says to contact them for warranty instead of the manufacturer (because they are not an authorized dealer) - stay away from them. They sell grey market goods. They are bad especially for cameras. I once bought a Denon surround sound receiver from Uncles Stereo in Brooklyn. While the product came and worked flawlessly for 5 years (I sold it on eBay and upgraded to a different receiver), I was still uncomfortable that the product was not warranteed by Denon.
Now a days, I buy locally or from authorized online places like one call.com, JandR.com, Amazon.com, Buy.com, etc. They may not have the best prices all the time, but once in a while they have a good deal and I buy at that time.
dsilver668 11-17-06, 12:53 PM I agree on this..
I guess it depends on whether you want to take the risk. I have been lookng at the Panasonic TH-50PX600U. It is more than the Visio from Costco, but it looks like it has everything I could possibly want. Plus it is a Panasonic so PQ will be top notch. I have been searching the web and honestly even with going to J&R or another online reputable dealer it is almost the same as if I baught it at a BB store. PLus by getting it locally I get instant gratification!!! :) You can't beat that..
Another added bonus is Costco's return policy.... That can be worth the extra cost over going with an online retailer, since if you have an issue, you can just return the darn thing. I have heard of folks returning elcetronic six months after buying them. I am not saying lets all take Costco or any other BB store for a ride, but it almost negates the reason to buy an extended warentee in my opinion. Heck I love Costco, where else can you get a giant box of corn dogs for dirt cheep!!! :)
On one side note, what are folks impressions of the Vizio. I know they are third teir, and there have been some issues, but I was wondering what they thought of picture quality, and the speaker system. I am on a tight budget so I can't afford to go hog wild. For me I am willing to sacrifice some quality or looks to get a nice plasma. My wife IE CFO doesn't realize what HD tv is anyway. Se said to me the other night, what's the big deal, I like my 13" TV dvd combo we have in our kitchen!! LOL

You have the right idea..buying a major product from Costco. I just purchased a $1300 Nikon d80 digital camera with complete outfit to include 2 Nikkor lenses.
Now, it will have a full warranty for as long as I choose to keep it. At times, you pay a little more for the product and, other times, the price paid is quite competitive.
sdeb_net 11-17-06, 01:42 PM Does the 5 year warranty on the 9UK from Panasonic mean that I don't need to buy an extended warranty (costs a few hundred $) or the advantage of buying from Costco for the unlimited warranty is severely reduced ? If true, I end up saving quite a bit as both the extended warranty or Costco's price costs me quite a bit extra.
BTW, does the 5 yr. warranty apply only to the 9UK or to the 6U/60U/600U as well ?
I believe the 5 year warranty is basically an extended warranty offered by Panasonic, at least that's how I read it. This offer appears to only apply to that one item (the 9UK plasma) and not the other Panasonics unless it's listed that way on the site. It's still a good idea to use the manufacturers warranty for repairable problems rather than returning it every time something goes wrong, but if it's not repairable or the item is out of warranty then returning it would be a good option. The return policy shouldn't be affected by this extended warranty.
richard korsgren 11-17-06, 03:19 PM The 5 year warranty from Panasonic is on all sizes of commercial units. The warranty from Costco has no time limit.

No problem with that, but keep in mind that it's debatable whether a mfg can actually deny warranty coverage on so-called gray market goods. And the money saved by ignoring this concern can add up over your lifetime to way more than the cost of any item that might go bad.
karlw2000 11-18-06, 12:17 PM Allow me to pour at least a little bit of cold water on your hot new purchase. As a veteran of 6 attempts to purchase a properly working Sceptre tv, I will explain how this will play out.
The first batch of every Sceptre model always has a high rate of defects, many are DOA. 1-2 months later they come out with an improved version, fixing some of the defects. 1-2 months after that they start selling all of the returned tv's, which they never even check out or fix. And, by this time the tv will be selling for less than you paid. The Costco coupon prices quickly become the regular price.
I hope you are one of the lucky ones! Good Luck!No worries. That is why I buy it from Costco. A little over 2 years ago, I bought a 30" Sceptre LCD for around $1500. A month after delivery, it began to act up...sometimes, I got a fuzzy screen. I never did like the poor response of the remote, but the 1280x768 resolution was perfect at the time with my HTPC. Anyway, I returned it to the nearest Costco for a full refund. I don't take advantage of Costco's return policy, but if it truly is a 'dud', I will return it in a heartbeat.
I also bought a Sceptre 20" 1680x1050 LCD monitor that also is HD compatible through component. It's not great as a video monitor (some tearing), but good enough for the price. I almost returned it, but didn't.
Regarding Circuit City, I've never had a problem returning anything with any kind of defect, no matter how small or practically un-noticable the defect was. In this case they did not charge any restocking fee- just a full refund.
It sounds to me like you discovered a defect in the product...
same here. return 2 tv's one defected and the other i just didnt like the pq. and no restocking fees.

Returned units can not be resold as new.
It is illegal.
The established stores won't do that.
8IronBob 11-18-06, 07:30 PM Was at Sam's Club today, did see some awesome Akai LCDs there that really popped out, nice to know that Akai isn't all that expensive, either. However, it seems to have minimal connectivity and features. I'm doubly assured that my JVC from BB was indeed the best option.
Ph0n33z 11-18-06, 07:43 PM Alright,
I was wondering if anyone who has purchased a television from SEARS could comment on their service/return policy.
I really want to order from Costco (for the obvious reasons), but I can not pass up the price I can get from Sears. I have a "contact", and can get 20% any TV. What do you guys think is more important? The 20% off or the Costco guarantee? We are talking about a $800 price savings or so. (Considering the 52" Sharp Aquos, panasonic 50" 600u, and the JVC-HD56FN97).
Thanks!

If we are talking $800 difference on same tv, then, it seems, saving the $800 is the way to go. I would put a value of around $600 on the no time limit warranty from Costso.
redgtconv 11-18-06, 09:41 PM Definitely take the deal at Sears. They will treat you good after the sale.

Do you happen to know if Sears carries either the Samsung HLS5687(8)w, or the JVC-HD56FN97? They do not have them on their website, but I was not sure if they carried them in the store.
Thanks!
Schlotkins 11-18-06, 11:22 PM Does Costco usually have the panny models in the stores? There is one less than 7 miles from my house and I think I would prefer to pick the unit up - I'm nervous about the panel gettings broken in shipping.
Also, can I go and browse through a costco without a membership if I want to see what my local costco has?
Thanks,

You must show your membership card in order to enter the store.
AKA BUD 11-19-06, 05:29 AM You must show your membership card in order to enter the store.
I'm not a Costco member. I went to my local Costco yesterday to browse. I simply asked the person who is at the entrance checking your membership card, "where do I go to join?". She directed me to the Membership desk. The lady I spoke to there explained the Costco membership, return policies, customer satisfaction, etc. I then asked her if I could look around BERFORE I decided on whether or not to join. She said "Yes" and gave me an application form to take with me. I showed that to the front entrance person and went right in. I spent over an hour there....mainly looking at the tvs and talking to the salesperson working that area. After I finished, I returned to the Membership desk and asked the lady a couple more questions and thanked her. I did not join at that time, but do plan on joining next week.

Costco welcomes you to wander thru their stores..even without being a member. Actually, I believe you can even purchase whiskey, etc. without being a member.

My three local NJ Costco stores (3) have never stoped me from entering their stores.
You can even ask for a one day pass.
I also believe you can purchase items as a non-member but must pay 5% extra.
Just go they will let you in.

rontron 11-19-06, 03:32 PM Hi
In terms of costco, i was there yesterday and they had both the 42 and the 50 in panasonic on display. I bought the 45" Sharp LCD and it is just amazing in tems of picture quality. They also had the 42 and 50 in phillips, the 50" toshiba, and many lcd sets. I think i picked up the last sharp- i had to buy the floor model but they gave me a good deal on it and it has the full warranty from Sharo as well as the reat coscto return policy. They also had the JVC 56" model. Hope this helps- got to go back to watching the great picture on the Sharp.

Actually Costco(warehouse) prices matches Compusa now. And Amazon has them for cheaper and free shipping and no tax depedning where you live. FYI.. :)
Ph0n33z 11-19-06, 06:25 PM Do you guys know if Costco will price match BB or CC? Both BB and CC are selling the Sharp 46" 1080p for much less than costco is advertising. Would love to purchase it from Costco because of their return policy.
Anyone know?
Thanks!
EDIT: On second glance, it looks like Costco Online only shows the 52" for sale. Wonder if they have the 46" in the store?

As far as I know, Costco does not get into price matching. You must always figure their warranty is worth (if a person had to purchase it) around $600. So, always factor this into any price matching you happen to do.

Costco does not carry the 46 inch Sharp. They carry, in the store, the Sony v25, an excellent set. This is the 46 inch display they carry.

Costco will not even price match costco.com. This lead me to order the 42 panny plasma online after buying it in the store. Once the online order arrives I'll be returning the store panny for a refund. I spoke with the store manager and this is what I was told I needed to do.

I think after all the hemming and hawing I have settled on the Vizio 50" It has everything I want and nothing I don't. Plasma displays are produced in only a few factories so I am not worried about that. Major thing is video processing and features. I know some folks have had buzzing issues, and some other things, but if I have that I will just trade up to a Panny.
MorningHill 11-20-06, 01:59 PM The Panasonic web site shows the 5 year warranty on 4 of the 9 commercial displays, doesn't show it on the 50". Am I missing something? Looks like the 50" gets a rebate, the 42" gets the warranty.

I see compusa's price as 20% less for the panny 42". But maybe I am wrong. The Sony 40" is slightly less as of yesterday...(I get the compusa email flyer)
hockeynut 11-20-06, 10:52 PM Why are the panasonic 42 and 50 plasmas selling so cheap right now? Are they trying to clear out the old models and bring in their new. Not complaining, just curious.
basic laws of supply and demand. if you lower the price, you will raise the demand.
seriously these hdtv's are not going to gain widespread adoption until the price comes down even more than it already has. if 20% of american households are going to have at least one hdtv by the kickoff of the superbowl in less three months (according to an article in consumer reports), the price is going to have to come down further.
also, imho people are still worried about plasma burn-in, too. that is another contributing factor to the drop in price of panasonic plasma hdtv's. of course i think most people are either overlooking (or are unaware of) a lot of the downsides of the other competing technologies (lcos, lcd, dlp).
the manufacturers and retailers are all expecting to sell tons of these expensive hdtv's, but if the american consumer decides to wait on the sidelines a bit more, there could be a glut of inventory that needs to be moved. and there is only one surefire way to start moving things -- lower the prices even more.
this is hardly restricted to panasonic plasmas, either. look at what costco is doing with the price of the philips 42" lcd. it was $200 off a week ago, $300 off a half-week ago, and $400 off now. i'm pretty sure costco was barely selling the philips at $200 off (and probably at $300, also) -- otherwise i don't know why they would be so nervously dropping the price so fast.

Anyone think it has also something to do with where the panels were made? 4 years ago, when I bought my first PDP, most, if not all, the panels were made in the far east. My Pio 433CMX was "Made in Japan". It seems like most panels, LCD and PDP's, are now made in Mexico. Cheaper labor and little or no tarrifs.
kenluvstv 11-21-06, 10:34 AM For many people, a $2000 TV is still expensive.
True.
But you don't have to spend anywhere near that anymore.
We can't discuss prices here. So just go to Costco.com and see for yourself how low the prices have gone on 40 and 42 inch Sony, Philips and Panasonic plasmas and LCDs. The discount brands are even less.
This is a great time to buy.
If I had known the prices were going to come down so far so fast, I wouldn't have got my Panasonic 42PX60U back in April when they came out.

Remember, when buying a commercial set, Panasonic has a $200 rebate..for delivery and installing..installs consists of 'placing tv on table or stand'. It does not extend their normal one year warranty by the way. The normal one year warranty for commercial sets is NOT for in home service. This 5 year warranty is for on site (in the home) service..a big difference.

Bottom line, on this forum..people mean well but, at times, get it wrong. Always GET IT IN WRITING from the source.

MorningHill 11-21-06, 02:49 PM Looked at the Panasonic claim form for the 5 year warranty and the e-mail their marketing director sent out to their dealers. Still looks like a heck of a deal.

And, if I buy a commercial Panny, I shall expect on-site (in home) service. Again, best to get these things in writing and not listen to nor accept (as fact) opinions/comments of others. Even Panasonic, in this case, did not get their information correct. They have a conflict in their own information. Anyway, I agree, enough talk on this matter. On to other subjects.

l337hxr 11-22-06, 11:59 PM why not just buy online?
i wasted hours trying to get B&M places to match online. nobody would budge. people who work there (salesman) are there for a reason. To get paid every 2 weeks. The only way thats going to happen for them is for consumers like us to pay the price they're asking. Thats what capitalism and profit is. However, some B&M may match just to make a sale. It all depends how much sale a store is pulling.

You fill out the rebate coupon from Panasonic...you get a check for $200. for delivery and an install. The install can be as simple as sitting the tv on a tabletop/shelf. It has nothing to do with amount you paid for delivery and install. Go to Panny web site; directions are to be found there.

When I asked CC over the weekend, the associate said it had to be one of their sku installation packages to get the full $200 rebate. I think he said the $199 installation included delivery and setting it up for you but not wall mounting it and the other installation packages are listed on their website.
