I gave up and added to HD dvrs with 500gb externals to both. So no HD qam is no big deal ,and all my tvs have ota tuners that easily get all the local HD anyhow.

Interestingly enought a rescan might just find those channels. They must be violating the FCC for encrypting local HD channels.

humdinger70 10-14-08, 11:33 AM According to an article I just saw on the local San Diego, CA board, MDN has had a minor update applied. Version is 2.4.1-108 (was 107).
brady239 10-14-08, 11:53 AM TWC in Rochester has reportedly dropped the MOJO HD channel and added Hallmark HD, SPEED HD, Cartoon Network HD, FX HD, Tennis Channel HD and MGM HD. I wonder when other markets (Albany, NY soon please) will see these channels as well?

I'm guessing my market, Charlotte NC, will drop MOJO and add nothing...pretty much normal for around here...
Marky_Mark896 10-14-08, 12:39 PM Tomorrow is d-day for me. No more dealing with TWC. I've had it with them taking away HD and never adding new in our area. The beginning of this month saw us lose our Fox HD due to a dispute between Lin TV and TWC. Now MOJO is leaving. We haven't gotten a new HD channel in over a year. Our PQ is terrible. D* is installing tomorrow with 2 HR-22 HD-DVR's and 2 SD Receivers. We have to have a 2 year contract, so if I hate D* as much as TWC, I hope TWC has things worked out within 2 years here then I can switch back, but until then, at least I'll still have quantity even if I dont have quality.

You are correct.
diy_canuck 10-14-08, 01:42 PM Would anyone have any idea if TWC-Syracuse will be getting Cartoon HD anytime soon? or at all? I am really interested in Clone Wars HD.
Thanks!

Removing MOJO HD is not TWC's fault. MOJO is going out of business in December 1.

Removing MOJO HD is not TWC's fault, you are right.
Not replacing the deleted MOJO HD with another HD channel, when they have multiple signed agreements, will be TWC's fault.

I realize that (although TWC does own part of MOJO). My local TWC is bad though. We lost our local Fox due to dispute between TWC and the mother company that owns our Fox affiliate. I've asked time and time again for our TWC to add more HD, and for the last year we've got nothing new, and lost Fox. Now we're losing MOJO, and probably won't get a replacement. Plus they just sent notices that they had to raise basic cable by 6 dollars a month, each DVR by a buck and each receiver by a buck. Roadrunner goes up by 2 bucks a month. That is 12 dollars increase a month for me for less product, which wasn't that good to begin with. Hopefully during my 2 year hiatus they'll pull their heads out of their azzes and then maybe if I hate D* I'll come back to them.

basic going up to 17.99
expanded going up to 47.99
if billed as seperate items.

I really hope Syracuse gets FX-HD as well. I would gladly trade that for MOJO.
Sons of Anarchy is a great show!
I'm about to jump ship with TWC, so if they add F/X HD they buy a little time, but they really, and I mean REALLY need to cut the deal with NBC Universal and add Sci-Fi and USA HD.
guys...
it's FX... not F/X

This quote says ALMOST all of it:
" The network continues to demand tens of millions of dollars a year for a network that airs only eight live regular season games. Given the price and terms the NFL Network is currently demanding, the network is simply not worth it."
The remaining part is that the network is a waste of bandwidth for more than 99% of the hours in a year.

What about the people that like the remaining part of that network?
Don't get me wrong. I love the less than 1% that would be occupied with 8 live football games. It's just that the NFL Network is a horrible investment of bandwidth for more than 99% of the hours in a year. The joy of 8 live football games per year is not worth the loss of channel space that could, otherwise, be used for something else.

That did not answer the question. You merely said the same thing over again.
pwrmetal 10-19-08, 08:52 PM What about the people that like the remaining part of that network?
How about those people pay for the sports tier and get it that way, which is exactly how TWC wants to offer the channel? This is one (rare) case where I agree completely with TWC's stance on a channel. I *like* the NFL, and think it's ridiculous how much the NFL wants cable to pay for it all the while demanding it be on the basic tier.
You can always go to a sports bar for those few occasions that the NFL network has a new first run football game.
reuthermonkey 10-20-08, 06:01 PM What about the people that like the remaining part of that network? They should *get* to pay extra for it like they get to do on Comcast. NFLNetwork is blocking that option.
nickdawg 10-20-08, 08:49 PM I'm WITH NFL Network on this one. It's a crime that TWC wants to take games we should get to see for no additional charge and make us pay more, especially when the prices are already high enough. These "tiers" TWC has are bulls... In my area(NE Ohio) we have a "Choice" tier that consists of newly added channels plus a few I used to get in the regular digital channel that were moved. Also there's a movie tier(of the Encore multicast channels) and a digital sports tier. All of which cost $5 extra.

But why 'should' you get to see those games for free? Id like to see all the games DirecTV has in Sunday ticket.... but its not free....
Somebody has to pay..... None of us are 'entitled' beyond whats available 'OTA'.
There is NO WAY I would ever side with programmers. They are dictating what has to be carried and at what rates. It ridiculous when you look at what advertising costs and how much paid programming is. In reality, TV programming should be free to the viewers as it was intended. People should have to pay for service to get the signal, but not for the content. The problem is that people are sheep and will continue to pay. Sports programming alone is solely responsible for the massive rate hikes in programming costs. If cable companies could take all sports and dump it into a pay tier, most would. The only way for this to ever get corrected is to go to an Ala Carte system of programming choices. The problem is it will never happen because laws would have to change and regulation be implemented to oversee that prices remained in line. Bottom line, ain't gonna happen. Just take a look at Wall St. !

Good! Media conglomerates basically ruined any type of programming choice there should be. When only 5 or 6 companies/corporations own everything, they then control it. The way things are set up today is so far from the original intent of the business model that you now have broadcast stations demanding cash for carriage of free signals. It's so sad that even Time Warner Cable is lacking program content THAT TIME WARNER INC. OWNS! My point about Wall St. is that it is the people (me & you) who ultimately loses and end up paying.

It's a crime that TWC wants to take games we should get to see for no additional charge and make us pay more, especially when the prices are already high enough.Uhhh... WHAT? The NFL CHOSE to take games OFF of OTA and cable so that they could put them on their own network, charge an exorbitant per sub fee, and then coerce cable companies and subscribers to bend over and pay sky-high rates for something that used to be free.
You should read up on what the NFL Network wants per sub, and compare that to every other group of channels. Then look at the total of 8 games that they broadcast, divide up the number of subscribers that the NFL Network would get by those 8 games. Then multiply that number by $2.50 and see how much money the NFL Network would make on a single game just by taking it off of OTA and moving it to their precious little "network". I can take a good sized profit, but the NFL Network is just greed, plain and simple. Oh, and don't forget to read up on the agreement that Comcast has with the NFL Network, and look good and hard for an explanation from the NFL Network on why they won't agree to the EXACT SAME thing with Time Warner Cable. And YOU think I should support that "network" with a rate hike for ALL subscribers? No thanks.

PS: I believe the last number I saw for NFL Network carriage on Time Warner was around $110 Million. This is exactly why I stopped watching, going to or otherwise supporting professional sports. I would love nothing more than to dump all the sports channels into a "sports tier" and watch my cable bill drop by about $25 a month.

Bzzt! Sorry, just eliminating ESPN would shave $3-4 off your bill. Moving all sports into a tier and implement a true, regulated Ala Carte system would indeed reduce you bill. Sports programming is the reason your programming costs are high as they are.

Less than $3. You are still exaggerating.
YES Network, MSG, and SNY add another couple dollars to the mix. I say that yes, $25 is overestimated, but I solidly believe it'd be in the $10 -$15 range.

Yup TWC here only really offers three levels of service basic, expanded basic and digital. Basic is a few cable channels and all locals including QAM HD's where available for about $12, Expanded Basic is a full complement of analog channels (about 75) for around $50 and full digital for around $55. The digital package includes ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN News, ESPNU, Sportsnet NY, YES Network, MSG, Fox Sports Net and VS. (ESPNU is the only one NOT included with expanded basic). Those channels alone easily add up to at least $10 in programming fees, not to mention the costs associated with whatever channels are tied to them. If they were put into a sports tier, I would drop them.
That's all I'm saying.
IT's also why I'm looking at DirecTV!

Varies by region. By now you've probably seen that if you've had an SA box your new box will still be an SA box.
In my area we have Motorola boxes. Relatives in other areas have SA boxes. From my limited experience with both I prefer the Motorola interface. We also have a Tivo. The Tivo has a much prettier interface, but we've found that the Motorola interface is easier to use and has better features. The only thing the Tivo does that is an extra, desirable feature is the recommended programs.

You will get the 8300/8240HDC. Both are the same but the 8240 lacks a digital tuner. Then again TWC has been using Digital Simulcasting on all regular cable channels.

The moto boxes have their flaws. The new boxes from Cisco, and Samsung all have 16.9 guides though not in HD. The Cisco 8540/8550/8552 boxes use a 960x540 guide which is higher than SD but enough to fill a widescreen TV.
Do 16:9 guides have more information? Otherwise I don't spend a whole lot of time looking at the guide.
hdtvfan2005 10-23-08, 05:25 PM I have seen a few 16:9 guides and they don't really add much more information though that depends. Some may just use a 4:3 guide and use the sidebars for advertising and other unique junk. Some Tru2way guides had like 6 to 9 channels listed at once. It also had 2 hour listings instead of 1 1/2 hour. So it depends on the guide layout or designers.

Analog elimination (see first post in this thread)
Keep in mind they are most likely fudging the numbers by inflating them with PPV, locals, regionals like DirecTV does.

no... its 83 'real' channels...
81 24/7 HD channels + HD Showcase OnDemand + HD PPV OnDemand
(yes.. it includes some locals.... but they're obviously available for everyone in the area....)
Glad to hear. That's one thing that always irked me about DirecTV. They advertise as if EVERYONE who subscribes is going to get 130 HD channels when in reality almost half are premium, PPV, out of market regionals or locals, and "sports" packages.
Don't get me wrong, I still think DirecTV has the best channel lineup in the biz, but the advertising is very misleading.

well... about half of the 83 are premium....
HBOs, Showtimes, etc...
plus the HDXtra package is still in effect for HDNet, HDNetMovies, and MOJO..
and a few are sports specialty channels only available with the sports package (which is actually also included in the HDXtra package)
Hi
We have recently added a new cable box for a second TV.
The first box is a Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR running passport. It works fine.
For the new box they gave us a SciAtl 4250 running Navigator. It has constant problems, frequently putting up a blank screen with "Please Wait". This occurs even when NOT changing channels. I think it is trying to get guide info and failing. TWC has sent signals several times and we constantly have rebooted box. Sometimes it holds for a few days and then goes back to this poor state.
I have asked TWC if they have any old boxes with passport and they said not likely.
They said they also had older 8300 boxes and Samsung 3050 boxes. Anyone know if they are any better? Or can anyone suggest what box I should try to get? (If I can find anything running passport i will go for that but apparently those are almost impossible to get)
Thanks
godfreyb 10-24-08, 01:10 PM when is the capital region (NY) gettin new HD channels?
I received a call from a VP (I emailed the TW email address that someone uses as their signoff) as I said that our condo board was looking to replace TWC with FIOS and they were most solicitous and told me that we were getting these new HD channels in Manhattan in December. I didn't hold back in telling him what I thought of TWC, Navigator and their whole operation. As it happens we are looking to add FIOS which I would switch to tomorrow if it was available.

People on this forum seem to think otherwise, especially in this thread. How dare you come in here and use logic when it comes to thinking about how many channels DirecTV really offers. We all know DirecTV can do know wrong, they would never use a sketchy advertisement model.

My guess is that you have a signal quality issue.
Are you sure you have a 4250 and not a 4250HDC or a 4250HDC? TWC served up Pace boxes, Scientific Atlanta 3250HD boxes, and 3100HD boxes when asked for a non-DVR box in my area before boxes without CableCARDs became illegal to manufacture or import, at which point TWC started offering up 4250HDCs in my area.
If you have a Scientific Atlanta 4250 or a 4250HD (not the 4250HDC), then find the signal level in this manner: Press and hold Select on the remote until the mail light turns on. Then press the down button on the remote. This opens up your box's MDN diagnostics. (MDN is the software that runs on boxes without CableCARDs).
If you have a Scintific Atlanta 4250HDC, press VOL- and VOL+ simultaneously on the box (not the remote) until the mail light turns on. Then press CH+ on the box and not the remote. This opens up the AXIOM OCAP Middleware diagnostics. (The AXIOM OCAP Middleware is the software that translates the Java-based ODN software into native machine code on boxes with CableCARDs).
Then use the remote to find the signal levels of the QAM tuners and the FDC tuner. They should be between -8 dBmV and +8 dBmV, with 0 dBmV being ideal. Too little is too hard to read, while too much will blow out the receiver. Also, for the QAM tuners, you need at least 33 dB of signal to noise ratio (SNR), with more being better. For signal to noise ratios, there is no such thing as too much signal to noise ratio, so higher is always better. You also need at least 20 dB of SNR for the FDC out of band tuner, with more being better. It can tolerate much lower SNRs because it is much slower than a regular digital channel that contains either television programming or a carousel (a data channel that broadcasts frequently needed data like guide updates, firmware updates, emergency broadcast system data, and on demand data).
If they are outside this range, call TWC to have your signal level looked at. You might have to have an amplified splitter replaced with a regular splitter if the signal level is too high, or have a regular splitter replaced with an amplified splitter if the signal level is too low.

It still amazes me that TWC is this far behind so late in the game. It would appear that this is going to be their standard HD lineup for awhile as I was told by TWC they have no intention of adding any of the NBC Universal networks anytime soon. Our HD lineup has been stagnated for months which is why I'm looking at DirecTV. The only upside right now is that TWC discounted my bill by $30 for one year. They offered two if I'd make a program commitment, but I stated I wasn't sure if I'd be keep the service. Should I invest in a new projector and Blu-Ray, I am going to want to get all the HD I can.
Thanks for the reply. I do actually have a 4250HDC. Checking the diagnostics the signal is indeed within range.
Called TWC and this time got someone who said that, since i had two different systems running - that is with a Passport DVR and a Navigator Mystro Box, then the Mystro box had to be "coded" as the "primary box", otherwise it would keep looking for more signal. He agreed that all signals were within range. So he did the "recoding" and yesterday it seemed ok. Today once again I got the "please wait" and finally it said "program guide is unavailable". Unplugging and rebooting the box fixed that.
Any other thoughts, other than bringing the box in for an exchange? And if so are there any boxes that are better than these 4250HDCs

Agreement comes after four week battle, brings LIN back to 1.5 million subscribers.
By Michael Malone -- Broadcasting & Cable, 10/29/2008 8:21:00 AM
Time Warner Cable and LIN TV have come to terms on retransmission consent rights after a four week-long battle that saw the LIN signal go dark for TWC subscribers in several markets. The agreement immediately brings LIN programming back to 12 stations and 1.5 million subscribers.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed at presstime.
“We are pleased to come to an agreement that will return programming to our customers,” said TWC Chief Programming Officer Melinda Witmer. “We thank our customers for their continued patience and support as we worked to resolve this issue.”
The LIN signal went dark when its contract with TWC expired Oct. 2. The affected markets include Austin, Buffalo and Columbus.

Now a month later I am getting ESPNU HD for some reason.
I am getting very frustrated with TWC in Charlotte. I am having constant problems with my two 4250 boxes conected via HDMI. I get the please wait at random, mostly when changing chanels but even when I am watching a show. They last from 10 seconds to the point I need to reboot. My 8300 DVR has never had a problem. They tried replacing them with the new Samsung's but had the same issue in addition to lousy picture quality in SD and sever pixelating watching hockey games.
A tech is coming out for the 4th time to try to fix it. He told me over the phone today that TWC has a problem with OCAP boxes. My signal has been great the last three times, I expect the same result today. Unfortunately I would go to DirecTV but I am in the price lock and they will not allow me to leave without the termination fee.
Anyone else having these problems too?
You may want to get the franchising authority involved. They should not be able to hold you under a price lock if they cannot provide the service you are paying for. I just turned down an extra year of price lock because I told them I wasn't going to commit to anything. The reason I was calling was to see if they could do better on the bill because I was looking at other providers. They gave me a one year price lock with no commitment.
Time Warner is aggressively telemarketing their Price Lock Guarantee (in North Carolina) as a hedge against what is supposed to be the most aggressive AT&T U-Verse launch to date. You may have locked yourself into a higher rate than you could have gotten without a commitment from a competitor. You lose a lot of leverage when you sign a pact with the devil.
That may be, but I don't see how any provider can force a termination fee if they are not providing the service the subscriber agreed to under the contract. I think they may it so you'd have to get a lawyer and see that it's just cheaper to pay the termination fee.
Navigator will eventually be in NYC on all boxes. Passport is slowly dying in NYC. Most of the TWC areas that are Cisco have fully converted to Navigator. There are a few SARA areas but those areas are eventually going to navigator by 2009. If you get a passport box then it will eventually go navigator.
I actually brought back my 4250HDC box to TWC and was able to exchange for a box running passport which is working perfectly. So the problem was all Navigator's fault and nothing to do with signal strength or wiring.
Not sure what you mean when you say that passport boxes will eventually go navigator though. Are you saying that if the box dies, they will replace it with navigator box? Or are you saying they will somehow swap the Operating System out of it which I wasn't aware they could do.
Thanks
Tech agreed it was a problem with OCAP and the engineers have been trying to fix it. He gave me some 3250HD boxes, only downside is I have to go through componant but I'll live with it. Hopefully this fixes my problems.
tarheelone 10-30-08, 08:37 PM FCC orders Time Warner to carry MASN
The Federal Communications Commission has denied an appeal by Time Warner Cable and ordered the cable television company to begin carrying the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network on a basic analog tier within 30 days.
Or, "in time for college basketball season," MASN spokesman Todd Webster says.
But TWC isn't giving up in its long dispute with MASN. The company issued a one-sentence response when informed of the FCC's Media Bureau's decision: "We disagree with the Media Bureau's decision and plan to appeal to the full commission."
MASN carries Major League Baseball's Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals, as well as college football, basketball and other sports. Under MLB's territorial rights map, the Triangle is Orioles and Nationals territory, so during the course of this dispute, cable customers have been unable to watch those games.
But Time Warner has argued that teams so far away from this market would not interest all of its huge basic cable audience and that MASN thus should be made available to subscribers willing to pay extra for a digital sports tier.
Two arbitrators have ruled that Time Warner Cable has discriminated against MASN, an independent regional sports network, and TWC had filed a "petition for review" with the FCC. FCC Media Bureau Chief Monica Shah Desai's denial came today.
bob2274 10-30-08, 11:34 PM I've been following this story since I live in Virginia but travel to NC quite a bit. I e-mailed Alexander Dudley with an e-mail address I found by doing a Google search, and he didn't appreciate it too much. I'd be interested to see what his response might be to a Time Warner customer. From someone looking in from the outside (Comcast serves my area), it just looks like another huge company disregarding its customers and looking out for its own interests.
“We disagree with the Media Bureau's decision and plan to appeal to the full Commission," said Time Warner Cable spokesman Alexander Dudley.
hdtvfan2005 10-31-08, 02:39 AM I actually brought back my 4250HDC box to TWC and was able to exchange for a box running passport which is working perfectly. So the problem was all Navigator's fault and nothing to do with signal strength or wiring.

Ok that clears up the the strength issue.
Yes they can do it. I have had passport swapped for Navigator. NYC will likely replace Passport with Navigator. They can simply download it to the customers STB. All SA boxes use PowerTV as it's OS. Navigator or Passport is just an IPG application that runs on top of that OS. Samsung uses some vxworks OS with their OCAP middleware. HDC and Samsung boxes use an OCAP middleware that translates ODN to native code that the OS can understand.

I havnt locked in yet, was on phone and as usual got disconnected when she went to see what kind of deal she could do for me. Have you heard when U-verse is coming to NC, cause I cant find any info on it

First quarter, 2009, at least in the Triangle, per the technician upgrading the switch a few blocks from where I live.
I had NO idea they could do that - only thought they could download updates, but if it is just an app, and not embedded further into the OS it unfortunately makes perfect sense that they could/would. I guess I can only hope that it doesn't occur soon...
Have you or anyone else read or heard when that event could be here in NYC?

I have no idea when MDN is going to happen in NYC. MDN is the version for SA non C boxes and Pioneers. MDN is the version of Navigator that works on older SA boxes and Pioneer's. You don't want it on an really old box. A fairly decent box like the 3250HD works just fine. Might want to contact the NYC guys. TWC has an enhanced version of MDN. MDN has some Closed captioning issues that 2.4.4-9 seems to fix. ODN boxes are better at Closed captioning. MDN is a bit buggy but runs very fast. Again it has to be a more recent non OCAP box not one of those old ones. If it's a really old box it looks like DOS.

I've now got 2 SA 8300HD DVRs and both work great. CC works on them as well. Don't know whether or not these are considered old or new. So how wil these work or they shift over? Thx
Leedogg 11-01-08, 10:51 AM Has anybody else had any problems with SPEED HD and no sound? I recently got the channel (954 in my area) and had sound at first. But Friday morning, turned the channel on, had picture but no sound. Anyway of telling if its on my end or TWC?? All my other HD Channels I have sound, and even the regular SPEED channel has sound.
thanks
You do not say where you are but I suspect it is widespread. I have no sound on the channel now.
Leedogg 11-01-08, 11:05 AM hey Gary, I live in Johnsonville, SC.
It appears TWC is now outright lying in it's ads touting "bundled services". They started offering a one and two year price locked package for $114.95. (Two year requires a program commitment) TWC recently updated our divisions website with the following:
"Digital Cable with more HD choices than satellite. Road Runner High Speed Online that delivers the speed you need. Digital home phone service that lets you talk all you want in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico and save at the same time. All delivered over our Advanced Fiber Network. And all for a surprisingly low price-on one easy bill."
Really? Last time I checked TWC was far, far behind either sat provider in HD content. Granted, our division has more than most, but still falls way short of the sat companies. We still have no time frame for popular channels like USA, FX, Sci-Fi, and Spike.

Great contribution! If you followed any of this you'd see I am just as critical of DirecTV for misleading advertisements about their HD total count (it's nowhere near 130). I was pointing out that this is a blatant lie, not misleading, but outright false. If you find the thread a joke, the unsubscribe.

When the include HD OnDemand - you can get some crazy numbers....
(a few TWC areas legitimately have more HD than satellite... once you take out the various sports services - but again - it all depends on how you want to count HD OnDemand)
I was specifically referring to my division, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find many divisions with an actual "network" count higher than DirecTV or Dish.

San Diego is doing something similar called build your own bundle or BYOB.
Note the strategic use of the word "choice" as opposed to "channel" when cable companies describe their HD offerings. Cable probably counts every HD program available on VOD at a given time as a "choice" in addition to whatever HD channels may be available.
Yes, just like DirecTV counts locals, RSN's, PPV's, and even East & West Feeds! My beef is that it boils down to deceptive and mis-leading advertising no matter who perpetuates it.

Why wouldn't DirecTV count RSN's? There are many shows I watch on a frequent basis that are not on my RSN.
PPV, I understand...they are only placeholders for more important content at a later date. ;)
East and West Feeds - Are you saying don't count HBO-E and HBO-W? They are two separate channels with the same programming, but timeshifted...I don't see an issue with that.
I realize there are a lot of TWC apologists as well as DirecTV apologists, I have both. DirecTV wins with me hands down.

Does anyone have the NHL Center Ice package from Time Warner? I just got it yesterday, and in the schedule it said 2 games were in HD, but when I went to the 700s to watch them, they were in regular definition... I even went to the 750s which I guess is just a duplicate of the early 700 channels, and still in regular definition... What gives?
Thanks
Alex

well you may want to check with your local regional TWC thread - a number of TWC regions have 'GAMEHD' - included with Center Ice - which shows 1-2 games a night in HD.
From the Wall Street Journal -
"Federal regulators are investigating why some cable-television subscribers are paying the same amount of money even as they are losing channels.
The Federal Communications Commission recently sent letters of inquiry to 11 cable companies and Verizon Communications Inc. asking about pricing and changes they have made to their tiers of service, including details about channels that have been moved to digital service.
Some consumers are complaining that they are getting fewer channels now on their analog cable service, as cable companies move channels to more-expensive, digital tiers. Once a channel is moved to a digital tier, it is unavailable to analog customers, who still make up about 40% of cable subscribers.
Agency officials said the investigation stems from concerns that cable companies could be trying to use the transition to digital-only television broadcasts in February to lure their subscribers to move to these more-expensive digital tiers.
Cable subscribers don't have to do anything to prepare for the digital transition, because that will affect only consumers who rely on TV sets using antennas. Cable subscribers aren't required to upgrade to digital tiers of service, either.
"We have warned the public before that the broadcast transition from analog to digital did not require cable customers to make a transition from analog to digital cable," FCC Chairman Kevin Martin told reporters on Tuesday. "So we've opened an investigation asking cable operators to tell us what they were informing their customers about any changes they were making" to cable lineups, he said.
The FCC launched the investigation Oct. 30, a day after consumer-advocacy group Consumers Union sent a letter to several senators expressing concern that consumers were losing channels without a corresponding rate decrease. The agency asked for information from some of the country's big cable operators, including Comcast Corp., Time Warner Cable Inc. and Cox Communications Inc.
Several pay-TV providers, including Time Warner and Verizon, acknowledged receiving the inquiry. "We feel quite confident that when the FCC gets our response they will be comfortable with how we handled this," said Eric Rabe, a Verizon spokesman.
It remains unclear how much authority the FCC would have to take action given that cable prices are deregulated. Also, the changing of administrations in Washington could work against the agency doing anything about the investigation soon."
In my area, TWC has begun to make it cost prohibitive to stay analog only, as the digital rate is now cheaper than the analog only rate. They make it up on the $8 a month box rentals. I'm inches away from DirecTV once I get a few things in order.
My hockey package is 421 - 434 but the HD game(s) are on 450. Myrtle Beach SC. I usually get a game or two a night but not every night. Unless we get an HD game 450 will show a screen with the letters HD

dennis1 11-08-08, 01:44 AM Time Warner Desert Cities has just added three more HD channels to its roster:
Cinemax
Palladia
TLC
This makes six new HD channels offered in the last couple of months (three, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, and CNN were added at the end of September).
I'm not going to say that I'm thrilled by these new offerings. I'm really concerned about what they're going to do once MOJO goes away. At this point, with two Fox Sports Networks in SoCal (West and Prime Ticket), and the Angels/Dodgers, Clippers/Lakers, and Ducks/Kings, there's an FSN HD game on virtually every evening. And, probably quite soon there'll be the possibility of at least two HD games on most evenings.
Without MOJO, it's unclear what will happen to those broadcasts. I'd kinda like to see a dedicated FSN HD channel--maybe to replace the vanishing MOJO.

San Diego has had those channels for a while now. We have FSN HD in San Diego and they have stuff from Prime Ticket and FSN west. It's usually not airing anything most of the time. Mojo will be replaced with MGM HD. MGM HD is great if you like Movies in HD shown in their OAR.
CaCHooKa Man 11-08-08, 05:25 AM i sent an email to TWC a while back asking if theyd ever have dedicated channels for FSN West and FSN PT and this is what they said
Thank you for your inquiry. We appreciate your feedback in regards to the channels FSN HD and FSN PT HD . Currently these channels are not in our lineup. Here at Time Warner we make every effort to provide our customers with the services they enjoy and as our customers requests grow, we will make every effort to provide the channels they would like to see. We thank you for your patience and support with this issue.
Typical canned BS from TW.

What would have been a better answer?
What would have been a better answer?
A better (truer) answer:
TWC uses actuarial tables similar to what the insurance industry does. We evaluate whether or not a channel addition will cost us more by having it, or not having it. We realize that we have to make some progress as time goes by. We therefore add a lot of cheap HD programming to bulk thinks up like Planet Green, but avoid those costly things like USA and NFL.
Sometimes those pesky competitors, and other cable operators force us to do things we don't really want to do, but have no choice. We blame outside forces to delay these additional costs as long as possible.
Often we have to add channels to justify a rate increase. However, rest assured that the net effect is an improvement to our bottom line.
Secretly we are working on a technology that can actually block satellite signals in an entire franchise area. Once that is implemented, we will be in a much better position to drag our heels even longer.
IOW they do a little cost/benefit analysis on each channel. A truer answer yes, a better answer no.
IOW they do a little cost/benefit analysis on each channel. A truer answer yes, a better answer no.
Let me put it this way. D*, E*, Fios, U-verse have a "subscriber acquisition" mentality. Big cable has a "subscriber retention" mentality. Acquistion marketing managers are rewarded by acheiving growth, retention marketing managers are rewarded by acheiving bottom line revenue budgets. More decisions than you realize are based on an individual's annual bonus situation, and not the overall long term benefit of the company or it's customers. I think we call that a "free market economy".;););)
What would have been a better answer?
My point was the answer is typical in that everytime I ask a question, that is basically the answer I get and others get no matter what division you happen to be in. DirecTV issues press releases and is active on DBSTalk forums and ACTUALLY listens to input from people and puts out information like when channels are coming. TW could do the same like keeping people informed of when to expect these channels, if there is a carriage agreement in place, or if they are not likely to carry. Just giving out more information goes a long way in my book.

I am not sure what any of that has to do with TWC's answer to the inquiry which I see as truthful and to the point.

No they can not. As has been stated many times in this thread TWC is divided into many state/region entities each with their own lineup. As for company-wide agreements there is an excellent list in the first post of this thread.

I guess what's frustrating is when a company "invites" you to commit to a price freeze package with penalties for early outs, they should be more forthcoming on what you will get in return over the course of the commitment. TWC is aggressively asking for commitments, but are unwilling to make commitments in return.
If TWC would state publically that certain channels would be added across their footprint within a certain time frame, then the anomosity that is so frequently expressed towards them in these threads would be significantly dimished.

Source? I'd love to have FX HD in time for the new seasons of DAMAGES and NIP/TUCK.
While that list is solid when was the last time TW negoiated to carry any new HD content. The divisions don't even give their customers the best from that already negoiated list little alone give us any thing new and of value. We are told they only add what is requested and that having HD content. Why have we added ABC Family Toon, Disney etc which has little or no HD content. Where is Fox news which has been on the list for month but no one has seen it yet along with SpeedHD. What is going to happen when Golf/Verses each have their own HD channel.. Why don't we have the NBC channels USA, FX, Spike,Bravo,Sci-fi etc.?
WHY CAN'T TW GIVE SOME INFORMATION ON THESE CONCERNS.

Why not? I'm well aware that TWC has various divisions and they also have a website for each division, as well as people working in said divisions that obviously decide what programming gets added/moved, etc. When I write to the higher ups in my division and get these canned responses it just further shows that TW doesn't really care and is just going to do what they want. Division reps could easily put out statements on the website or answer questions as to what's upcoming in the division.

I assume you're saying that TW San Diego will be getting MGM to replace MOJO. Although TW Desert Cities is under the supervision of TW San Diego, we do have some differences, and unless they're going to unveil the SDV that they've been working on for ages (which, a year ago, I was told was probably a year away--and I'll bet if I asked now, it would still be a year away) and provide a wealth of new programming, I'd like to see FSN HD when MOJO shuts down, rather than be shut out of all that FSN HD programming for the foreseeable future.
By the way, I understand that the Fox Sports Net channels were going to go HD some time soon. So, presumably, we could be given channels that wouldn't be dark almost all of the time.
dennis1 11-09-08, 02:01 AM What would have been a better answer? What could have been a better answer? Anything.
To answer the question by saying that those channels aren't in the lineup is saying nothing that any idiot wouldn't already know just by looking at the program guide, or by clicking the remote.
Then they finish it with that canned nonsense about how much they care about their customers' desires, and thanks for writing.
That was a totally information-free response.

I think all divisions are going to swap mojo for MGM HD. Some divisions have already announced their plans. I guess it's a part of those 8 to 13 new HD channels by the end of 08. We do get FSN HD and FSN Prime Ticket and it's dark most of the time but they do have some decent content on it. San Diego has already deployed SDV. FSN HD some times is a simulcast of FSN west. TWC Desert Cities will probably be adding those 8 to 13 HD channels by the end of this year or early 2009. More like 7 to 12 unless desert cities gets KUSI.
Maybe 9 to 14 or 10 to 15.
TW doesn't really care and is just going to do what they want.
My only direct experience with a TWC employee was with one who stayed into the evening hours installing signal amps to get me the best possible signal. TWC employees are just working people like the rest of us. To make generalizations like that is gratuitous and selfish. You can not always get what you want when you want it especially when every other subscriber is affected the same way. Let the whining resume.

Gary, you are mis-reading what I'm saying. It has nothing to do with the average TW employee or tech as they have little to do with actual content or services being added. I merely was pointing out that when an email is sent up the food chain to people who are responsible for those issues, and I get the same canned response I got from the lower level people, it certainly gives the appearance of not really caring.

I agree 100%. Its sad that we get more information from the techs that visit our houses during service calls than we ever get from the executives of TWC.

Maybe 9 to 14 or 10 to 15.Well, they've already added six new channels in the last couple of months, so, then, they don't have too far to go to reach their goal.
As far as KUSI goes, I had to Google it to find out what it was, i.e., an independent channel out of San Diego. Since they've never, to my knowledge (which goes back only to 2002), carried KUSI SD, I'm not certain that they'd add KUSI HD.
Also, may I ask where you get your information from? You appear to know a lot more about the subject than does the average customer who has to rely on customer service or TW news releases.

Bob Barlow the president of San Diego division said that. I could see that happening to desert cities. Yes we have had KUSI since it's in our DMA. He has replaced Judy Walsh. Of course the president knows all their plans. Also TWC Desert Cities is getting Start Over. Bob Barlow also oversees Desert Cities but the main guy their is Tad Yo. Actually Food Network HD and HGTV are a part of the new goal but some of the other HD channels that were added in San Diego were earlier adds. There is a Motorola area that is ex Adelphia that gets some HD channels before us. Some of those new HD channels were with them for quite some time. So it might even be more HD channels that will be added.
Marcus Carr 11-10-08, 10:02 AM I think all divisions are going to swap mojo for MGM HD. Some divisions have already announced their plans.
In addition to its new AT&T affiliation deal, MGM HD is seizing the opportunity presented by the demise of Mojo HD, the male-targeted service that is being shut down in December by In Demand Networks, which is owned by Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Cox Communications.
When MGM HD heard that Mojo was going to be shut down, its affiliate sales force approached Time Warner systems about getting the soon-to-be-defunct network’s slot, according to Lee. He expects MGM HD to pick up close to 1 million of Mojo HD’s former homes.
“A lot of Time Warner systems have the bandwidth to accommodate an earlier launch for us now,” Lee said. “In a lot of systems that were probably going to launch us next year, almost all those launches moved up to fourth quarter this year.”
Lee declined to comment on how many total subscribers MGM HD has now, but he claimed that the network is at twice its original projections. He’s also hopeful that Time Warner will launch MGM HD in New York City and Los Angeles by the end of the year.

So how are we supposed to know when they add the channels? The problem is that with switched video the channels do not show up in the guide unless you explicitly press the channel button for them.
I went for the last few weeks without knowing that TWC Raleigh/Cary had added ESPNUHD, SPEEDHD, DiscoveryHD,etc….
It sure is great that TWC is adding channels but not giving you a good way to see them.

danki6x 11-11-08, 05:16 PM (Regarding Palladia/MHD) - actually many areas still don't have it.That is weird. We had MHD in SoCal region when we only had about 3 non-"premium" HD channels other than a few local channels. We had it many months before we got TNT HD for the World Series and beyond and more than a year before we got the recent addition of 10 or so HD channels. We are so far behind HD-wise that I figured Palladia was everywhere. What a waste when there was so many other choices to give us. It is impressive HD though when you watch it. /Dan

Mister B 11-13-08, 04:19 PM Hello, I live in rural El Paso County Texas and just subscribed to Time Warner Cable after many years as over-the-air only. I must say that cable has improved greatly since I last had 36 snowy channels. All of the channels are digital now and the local HD looks as good to me as from the antenna.
I have the Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8240HDC DVR and while it does perform properly it seems rather primitive. I downloaded the owner's manual and can not believe there is no way to see only favorites in the guide. The guide itself looks like something on a 1980's computer. Also the number of HD channels is very limited. We get the 5 locals in HD and 7 or 8 others (TNT,Discovery,ESPN 1&2, etc.)
I have read in the local thread that we can not expect much more HD until this Switched Digital Video system is in place which has been hinted at by the end of this year. Am I correct in assuming that my current box/DVR can not handle the SDV system. I believe I have read that "Navigator" is needed. Is Navigator a new box or just new software that they can download into my current box? If a new box is needed, how does Time Warner notify customers of the possible upgrade, with the bill, on screen, etc?
Insight from those of you in cities that are ahead of El Paso in this regard would be appreciated. I would like to know what to expect in the way of improvements.

Yes SDV wil offer more HD channels. Navigator is just a software download. SARA can do most of the navigator features. They can just simply download and install the software to the box via the network. SARA is that primitive guide. They are looking at deploying new Samsung HD-DVR's with MPEG-4 capabilities. All boxes can handle SDV. Just not Tivo Series3/HD/HD XL with that tuning resolvers. CableCard enabled TV's cant access SDV. Also TWC could be upgrading the plants to a higher frequency for more HD. They are also looking at switching analog channels to digital. Just some info.

You are joining a growing number of TW subs growing impatient and dis-satisfied with the lack of HD content. We have about 50 channels in my market since SDV was deployed, but the majority are sports or channels that have no actual HD content. I have yet to see one show or movie on ABC Family or Disney HD. We still lack top rated channels like USA, Fx, Fox News, and Sci-Fi. I have been very vocal and frequently contact my local division for info only to get typical canned responses of "We value you as a customer and appreciate your input yada, yada, yada ..."
We still have a sub-par DVR and guide software. I'm right on the bubble of switching to DirecTV, but as the economy tanks I'm just holding off for now.

Each TWC region is run separately. And each region can be wired very differently (since TWC has taken over all sorts of random small cable systems over the years). Most areas that haven't added more channel most likely have a very inferior cable system which is in much need of being upgraded. Chances are that you aren't high on one of the 'phone company' TV list - so TWC will take their time in getting to your area (thats just the way business works....)
ErieMarty 11-13-08, 09:25 PM when you said each time warner area is run separate..are you saying they are separately owned and can decide what they want to charge in that area and what channels they add or don't add..
I can understand if they need to upgrade and area so they can add more channels.
But after thats done you would think all areas would offer the same..Minus Local channels and Regional Sports channesl..
I think if I live in Boston or in San Fran and order Dish or direct I would get the same packages in both cities...(again minus locals and reginal Sports)..so why doesn't Cable work that way..
is it just Time Warner cable or is this common between all cable companies..
thanks again for your insight in this subject

Just a Frustrated HD TV owner with Time Warner CableThe reason is almost always that the local cable company doesn't have an adequate infrastructure (i.e., bandwidth) to provide more channels (just as, for example, a satellite TV distributor might not have enough satellites in orbit to carry all the channels they'd want).
Infrastructure upgrades (including Switched Digital Video), and removing analog channels to free up space should eventually allow for more HD channels. As to when that might be, who knows? Certainly not us poor customers.

Did TWC just roll out a software update for the SA3250HD boxes? It was my understanding that these were the last non-OCAP boxes and my house hates OCAP unless I have the DVR, and I do on one of my TV's. I had a tech swap out the two SA4250HD boxes because they kept giving me a "Please Wait" message. The Samsung boxes they tried were even worse as I got a lot of pixelation in sports and the SD picture quality was atrocious.
Anyways, my box this morning at around 8:30 rebooted and when I truend it back on the network logos were now shoeing up in the info bar at the bottom, they were not doing this before. Anyone aware of an update and if they pushed OCAP to these I feel I may be screwed again.

OCAP cannot be used on a SA3250HD because it does not have enough RAM or processing power to run OCAP in any form or fashion with any tolerable level of performance. However, TWC has a version of Navigator for boxes that cannot use OCAP called MDN. Only boxes with CableCARDs can use OCAP.
As for your "Please wait" and garbage pictures, you might want to have your signal quality looked into by a TWC technician. These are symptoms of signal levels that are either too weak or too strong, or a case where the loss in the reverse data channel is so great that your box is unable to generate a signal strong enough to get to the head end in a strong enough fashion to communicate to the head end. Signals that are too weak obviously cannot be read, while signals that are too strong blow out the receiver's circuits causing them to read the signal incorrectly.

ah, thanks. i have heard of those.
hdtvfan2005 11-19-08, 11:31 PM Hallmark Movies HD and Big 10 HD are being added in San Diego. Big 10 requires the Sports pack. Hallmark Movies HD requires the variety pack. So it looks like another 6 to 12 more HD channels in order to meet their goal. SoCal is getting some nice channels. Some people are probably going to complain about Hallmark Movies HD. I too want too see some non hallmark channels in the HD list. Some areas like SoCal don't get Big 10 network in SD or HD. TWC San Diego is also carrying the SD versions of Big 10 and Hallmark Movies.
Hallmark Movies is distributed via MPEG-4 so that could allow them to transcode it at Comcast style bit-rates.
I just had my Time Warner HD hooked up to my 1080 TV and most channels are showing up as 480i on the scientific atlanta hdtv box explorer 4250 hdc. Is this normal?

Hi, I'm in Wilmington,NC.
I found the resolution settings but when I try to change it they revert back to 480. I tried setting it on 1080 and automatic and it always goes back to 480, I tried it 10 times and once it did go to 1080 and stayed but most hdtv is showing up 1080 now.
Non hd channels are still showing at 480.
dvdguru 11-21-08, 02:40 PM Do you have a coax cable hooked up from the box to the tv as well? If so, is the tv set to the HDMI input as it may just be set to the regular tv input if the coax is hooked up as well (might as well remove the coax from box to tv if it is hooked up). This situation would cause the hd channels to show up as 480i if on the wrong tv input. Also, you're aware hd channels are on different channels than the analog/digital channels, correct? They will show up in the guide and say "CBS HD", etc. On my setup for example, cbs analog is 2, hd is 225...
Yes we are aware hd channels are different than regular channels. My tv is set for hdmi input, only hdmi cable connected to tv from hd box, coax from hd box to wall outlet.

I had this same problem unit a few weeks ago, then the firmware in the cable box was updated and now everything works fine. I could set the output to 1080i only and it would stay until I turned my receiver off, then back on. I would assume the same thing would have happened if the box was connected direcly to the TV.
When 2 HDMI devices "handshake", they exchange information about their capabilities. I assume the the cable box was turning on (back on) all the resolutions that I had turned off.

What is on the display monitor (TV) in sleep mode?
WUNC-HD channel 201: I get no sound via an HDMI connection to my reveiver, all other channels are fine & I have checked the SA8300HD's audio settings to make sure it is set to HDMI & the receiver is set for audio & video via HDMI.

Is it in the wee hours of the morning after you have not hit any buttons in a while? If so, there is a setting in the DVR (I seem to remember, but has never affected me). If not, then ? I have my drive shut off when I turn my DVR off so it does save energy (and hopefully wear and tear). Did lose buffering while off, but after counting on that a couple times, I learned to do things differently. Old Passport software did not have the shut off drive option and you could set it on a channel and turn it off and it would still buffer. /Dan

It happens anytime, not just graveyard hours. The banner covers half the screen, and stays up for 60 seconds or so, unless of course you enter "A" for sleep or "C" for don't sleep. It's annoying enough that if there's a way to defeat it I will.
TWC customer service of course doesn't have a clue. Their sugggestion: "Unplug your box for 30 seconds..................":mad::mad:
Has anyone tried looking in the devices submenu under the Quick Settings menu? I found something called "Timer:Sleep" in there, but I have not played around with it at all and have left it off.
phousley 11-25-08, 10:59 AM Has anyone tried looking in the devices submenu under the Quick Settings menu? I found something called "Timer:Sleep" in there, but I have not played around with it at all and have left it off.I just assumed it was like the sleep timer on a TV that automatically turns the device off after the requested time. Although on most TVs its a one-button access. Going this deep into the menu is not too useful.

Sleep mode is triggered after a few hours of no interaction from the user/viewer. The DVR is guessing that if you have not changed channels or done any other DVR activity in the last x hours (maybe 3-4hrs), then it can stop buffering the current channel and stop using the hard drive. Before it goes into this sleep mode, it prompts the viewer and gives you the chance to not go into the DVR "screensaver mode" equivalent.
If you don't need the buffering to be active, you can let it go to "sleep". You will still view the current channel, but won't have the live buffer available to go back to. The "sleep" mode just turns off the constant writing/reading of the hard drive that is active when it is buffering the live contents of the program you are watching.
MosIncredible 11-25-08, 06:58 PM Thanks for adding such useful information to this thread.
I just heard from the top execs at TWC.. they were so distraught over your post they decided to commit Hari Kari
I'm actually sorry I made that post I made. It was very immature.

lytnngseed 11-27-08, 03:06 AM Thanks for the update! I'm stoked, as I know many of you are, about USA and Sci-Fi HD.
Timothy31 11-27-08, 03:13 AM Nice to see all those new known deals. I hope those channels get added to the DFW area with them going mostly digital early next year.
Riverside_Guy 11-27-08, 09:20 AM Andy, you might think of dropping MOJO as it is supposed to go away 12/1 (TWC announcement was mid Nov. in my region, but they seem to be leaving it running at this point).
Ah, so IFC HD is happening somewhere! 2 channels I have been hoping for HD channels are IFC and Sundance... but that seemed a wish THEY would start doing it; the issue of TWC carrying it is quite a separate issue.
hdtvfan2005 11-27-08, 05:58 PM The new version of ODN now mentions 441 MHz (CH. 60) and 465 MHz (CH. 64) as possible SDV frequencies. That means TWC San Diego is in the process of adding more HD channels. I have a feeling that 60 and 64 will go on the digital tier. TWC San Diego is probably looking at cutting down the analogs to the limited basic tier. SoCal wants to reduce the analogs to 30. In San Diego that would be about 20 to 23 analogs. 50 channels is a lot of bandwidth for SDV, DOCSIS 3, SD Channels, HD channels, VOD or any combination.
This is GREAT news!! Adding SciFi-HD and USA-HD will officially stop me from even considering Satellite. FX-HD and Fox News-HD would be nice as well. My only concern is, will they add it in my area. FX-HD and Fox News-HD have been available for a while now, but I still don't have it.
ErieMarty 11-28-08, 07:13 PM I get my Time Warner Cable out of NE OHIO.. and not counting my HD Locals and Regional Sports channels..this is ALL WE GET..
ESPN, ESPN 2, TNT, TBS, A & E, HGTV, Food, History, HD Theater, Universal HD, HD Net, HD Net Movies and MOJO (and one HD channel HBO, SHOW, Cinemax if you pay to get those services)
how does that compare to the list of what HD channels have agreements with Time Warner..
I dont' understand why some areas have more then others.. IF National Time Warner has agreement to carry these channels why are they NOT on all Time Warner Systems.
sorry just a frustrated HD TV Owner...
Well, TWC in CNY put out an ad with the Black Friday ones promoting their Triple Play here. They were showing "new" channels of Speed HD, FX HD, Fox News HD, and Fox Business HD. However, they are not in the guide yet. Hopefully, we will get USA HD and Sci-Fi HD sooner than later, but I'm not holding my breath. We are still running SARA software.
I dont' understand why some areas have more then others.. IF National Time Warner has agreement to carry these channels why are they NOT on all Time Warner Systems.
Each region is it's own business unit as the Search function of this thread shows many times over.
I'm not terribly happy with new HD channel announcments. First, my particular area is typically last on a long, long list to receive new HD. Second, TWC hasn't, and probably will not, implement SDV (Switched Digital Video) in my neck of the woods (other parts of So Cal are either already implemented or will be soon) which will prevent more HD channels from appearing for me. Such announcements are a breath of carbon monoxide.
ErieMarty 11-29-08, 08:56 AM why would Corp Time Warner let each area decide what channels they carry and dont' carry...
wouldnt' they want them the same....
I don't understand this logic ???
If I went to an Outback for dinner I would expect the menue to be the same if I was in Michigan or in Florida....(ok maybe some minor changes)..
sorry if this has been explained before somewhere on here...
(ok maybe some minor changes)..
That's the key. Different available locals, sports packages, subscriber preferences, offerings of the competition, local cable authority mandates, TWC equipment, etc.

to me the only difference from Area to Area should be the local Channels and the Regional Sports channels...
why should I ONLY get 13 HD channels when Time Warner as Agreements to carry at least 3 times as many...
what kind of Competition does Cable have from area to area. ?? NONE other then Dish and Direct and thats the same if you are in California or up in NE England..
if I had a choice of Time Warner and Comcast or Cox Cable then maybe Time Warner would offer me more for a better price then they are now...
Problem for me is that Direct TV doesn't carry my local channels (std or in Hd) and Dish only carries them in Standard format right now..so if I want local HD channels Time Warner is my only option..
Gary..thanks for your input and letting me bitch about this subject..

Direct TV doesn't carry my locals in HD either, however a 50 dollar antenna and some know how and I'm rocking 8 locals in HD. I gave up on TWC when we where paying 35 dollars a month for 2 HD-DVRS and getting 8HD channels and only 2 of those being locals. TWC in small communities is a damn joke.

Well that's the situation. They are their own business units making their own business decisions. Keep after your local cable authority, your local TWC and keep an eye on your alternative programming providers.

Because each area is a franchise, not a duplication of the corporation. That means there can be many changes from one area to another.
Look at, say, McDonald's. There are literally 50-60 potential menu items that an individual franchise store could offer. However, most only offer maybe 30-40. So, while one store may offer things like personal pizzas, pasta and mozzarella sticks, another store will stick to the standard burger categories. Some offer WiFi access and video rentals, while others don't. Some simply don't wish to offer those items, while others are simply slow to upgrade their equipment to offer them.
The same goes for cable franchises.
The added variable is that many cable systems are made up of purchase smaller independent providers. Those can sometimes take a while to upgrade since they're often very outdated.
ErieMarty 11-29-08, 05:40 PM I want to thank everyone who reply to my crying about only having 13 HD channels dispite Corp Time Warner having agreements with many many more..

So right now I am not going to fighter her on that since we only have 1 HD TV right now)..
thanks again...for trying to make me understand how this works

I know how you feel. Outside of locals, I have even less HD channels than you. HD Theatre, ESPN, ESPN2, TNT, HBO, MAX, SHO, STZ...We're suppose to get more in my area on Dec. 17th. I hope they follow through with that statement. What made me upset is that they added 11 channels to my line-up for about 3 days and took them away. Now I have to wait a month for those channels to return and new ones to arrive with them hopefully.
ErieMarty 11-30-08, 04:04 PM WOW.. I thought we didn't have much here in NE Ohio area..
what sucks is during the Summer Olymipic they add USA Network for HD Coverage and 2 others channels...but once it was over so were the channels..so the BandSpace must be there but for some reason they refuse to add ANY more HD Channels..
I don't care if they add QVC in HD...I just want more HD options then I have now..plus when I see what other areas get or agreements Corp Time Warner has and we can't get them...that is what upsets me...
good luck in getting MORE HD Options..

In Albany NY, you can get the local TV stations in HD with the $12 plan. This is commonly called QAM "in the clear". The FCC requires the cable companies to deliver the locals "in the clear".
Albany TWC maps the local HD channels as 18-06, 18-08, 18-10, 18-13. For example, all these appear after channel 17 if you were pressing "channel up" on the remote, but BEFORE channel 19. On a regular TWC supplied cable box, these HD channels would tune at 1806, 1808, 1810, 1813.
BTW, several people have reported that those only subscribing to Road Runner (don't pay for any cable TV) have successfully split the incoming coaxial cable and been able to receive the locals in HD.

Well since those channels still haven't been added on any Time Warner systems and we haven't heard for certain that TWC has reached an agreement with NBC/Universal to carry those channels, they probably don't know. If the channels get added in Ohio and NY this month like they are saying they will then I have a feeling(I hope) they will be added to other systems rather quickly since these are two channels that the most people want. Here in the Triangle we are finally getting Bravo SD(some areas have had it, most have not) this month. It has been suggested that carrying the SD channel systemwide was one of the bargaining points in reaching an agreement with NBC/Universal for their HD channels. My guess would hopefully be in early 2009.

It's being reported that BHN in Central Florida (Orlando) is adding them on 12/29. Also supposed to be adding FX-HD. There was supposedly a public notice in the local paper about the additions and SDV channels.
This could be a good sign for others since BHN is usually included as part of any TWC deals.

Thanks for the explanations. I misunderstood and thought USA HD and SciFi HD had already been added in the New York area. Hopefully it will be here later. At least, I have hope :) Also the info on them being added in Florida bodes well for us too.

12/17 is the currently 'announced' date for most of TWC NYC (parts of Queens have been delayed to 12/22 - while Southern Manhattan may have to wait up to 2 more months)

Hey Bsquare, I live in Carlsbad, serviced by Time Warner. Anyways yeah, you should be able to get the locals in HD. From the time in between I got my HDTV to getting the STB, I was able to get FOX-KSWB (69.1), CW-XETV (6.1), NBC-KNSD (39.1), CBS-KFMB (8.1), ABC-KGTV (10.1), PBS-KPBS (15.1), and COX 4 San Diego (i think its 92.1) (Padres, Aztecs, USD Toreros, local area sports) all in HD via clear QAM (Independent-KUSI, isn't on QAM yet, but TWC San Diego is pretty close to getting KUSI-DT). I was also able to get the Music Choice channels (normally in the channel 900's on the STB) as well over clear qam. Hope this helps. Also, bsqaure, if you need more info on San Diego area HDTV subjects, questions, or concerns, check out http://www.hdtvforsandiego.com. Hope this helps-Tom.

Of course those re-negotiations have been up there a while, and the 24 November update likely only includes the change to the bottom notice about MoJo and Expo TV VOD...
