View Full Version : Time Warner Cable HDTV
bsquare 12-02-08, 10:50 AM Hey Bsquare, I live in Carlsbad, serviced by Time Warner. Anyways yeah, you should be able to get the locals in HD. From the time in between I got my HDTV to getting the STB, I was able to get FOX-KSWB (69.1), CW-XETV (6.1), NBC-KNSD (39.1), CBS-KFMB (8.1), ABC-KGTV (10.1), PBS-KPBS (15.1), and COX 4 San Diego (i think its 92.1) (Padres, Aztecs, USD Toreros, local area sports) all in HD via clear QAM (Independent-KUSI, isn't on QAM yet, but TWC San Diego is pretty close to getting KUSI-DT). I was also able to get the Music Choice channels (normally in the channel 900's on the STB) as well over clear qam. Hope this helps. Also, bsqaure, if you need more info on San Diego area HDTV subjects, questions, or concerns, check out http://www.hdtvforsandiego.com. Hope this helps-Tom.
Tom... Thanks for the great info.
Rock48nj 12-02-08, 12:31 PM ***Edit: Sorry just found the local area. Was a bit to quick to post.
Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, but is anyone in New York City having trouble with ESPN2 HD? The channel seems to pixilate and audio skips for me and I can’t figure out why. Have had the same problem on a few random channels in the past, Fuel in SD for instance is one where I have noticed it.
Anyone have thoughts on solution? With college hoops starting to get in the swing of thing it’s a channel I will watch frequently.

Leedogg 12-03-08, 09:30 AM anybody else having cable issues this morning? Both the SDV and the HD channels are freezing in 5 sec intervals. Then show fine for 5 secs. The analog (basic) and the local HD channels are showing fine though with no freezing.

Yes, SciFi and USA as well as all I mentioned are actually available in HD in KC now. I did typo MSNBC though - it should be CNBC HD.
Do any other markets have these yet? NYC? Looks like KC might be a TWC test market now. KC was first to get new Nav version too.

Most of NYC is getting them on 12/17
xenophonite 12-03-08, 02:24 PM Unfortunately SciFi doesn't show much content in 16:9 HD. Even some 16:9 shows are shown in 4:3 box with 16:9 aspect within it. Odd.
Unfortunately SciFi doesn't show much content in 16:9 HD. Even some 16:9 shows are shown in 4:3 box with 16:9 aspect within it. Odd.
Well thats because they were produced in 16:9.... but not in HD...
They don't necessarily go together...
xenophonite 12-03-08, 03:01 PM While I majorly dislike stretching 4:3 into 16:9, it would seem acceptable to go ahead and zoom 16:9 non-HD into full 16:9 for the HD channel. I suppose purists would want that choice on their own TV though.
GrouchoDude 12-03-08, 03:07 PM Well thats because they were produced in 16:9.... but not in HD...
They don't necessarily go together...
But in this case, they do. There is very little programming produced in 16:9 SD anymore, and I don't think the Sci-Fi Channel is currently airing anything in that format. The remarkable series 'Charlie Jade', which virtually nobody saw due to its timeslot (their loss), was one of those and it ended its 20 episode run on Sci-Fi a couple of months ago.
xenophonite 12-03-08, 03:10 PM I wonder if it's a TWC thing and not the broadcaster. Hopefully they fix it as it's very odd, something not right. I end up zooming it at the TV layer. They could probably do better upscaling from the broadcaster (SciFi) or TWC if it's 16:9 non-HD content. But I suspect even some real 16:9 HD content is getting shrunk into a 4:3 box with 16:9 aspect within it, making for a loss of major real estate on the screen. I'm using HDMI btw, so the aspect is auto set.
I'll check with a friend who has SciFi on DirecTV and compare the same show.
Methinks KC is beta testing the new HD channels.

Channel additions for Albany TWC in December 2008 (http://www.timewarnercable.com/MediaLibrary/4/5/Content%20Management/Programming/documents/notice_nys_120108.pdf):
Golf HD will be added to channel 1865 on December 8, 2008
Crime/Investigation HD to be added to channel 1828 on December 30, 2008
Big Ten Network HD to be added to channel 1878 on December 30, 2008
Albany TWC added Golf HD this morning (a little early, as their legal notice stated 12/8/08)
They also added NY1 HD, which is TWC's 24/7 local news channel in NYC. NY1 currently has practically zero HD.
I had a pretty good discussion with a TWC tech guy yesterday. We all know how bad TWC is at communicating with their customers when it comes to adding new HD channels. Every time I call them, they have no clue. Finally, I talked to a guy yesterday who gave me an explanation on why that is. He says the reason he can't tell me what new HD channels are coming, and when they are coming, is because they don't even know. He said they are told at the last minute, and then they add the channel. He did tell me that he knows a bunch of new HD channels are coming in the next couple of months, but he has no idea which ones, and doesn't have exact dates. He did say that the SDV technology is working well, and that is why they will be adding more channels. It does seem that my area (Syracuse), is worse than others about getting HD info out to the customer. I see on this forum that some areas are telling their customers when to expect new HD channels, and what they are. I just wish my area did the same. For the record some of the key HD I'm hoping for are:
USA-HD
SciFi-HD
FX-HD
FoxNews-HD
CartoonNet-HD
Dack, we are getting:
FxHD
Fox News HD
Fox Business HD
Speed HD
As to when we get them, I don't know but TWC did recently advertise it here. See ad insert below.
My gripe is now that I have upgraded to 1080p I am seeing ALOT more garbage in the TWC signal. Blu Ray discs look OUTSTANDING, but TW HD now seems marginal coming from a 480p DLP to a 1080p LCD and don't even get me started on SD. DirecTV is looking better now, but I'm wondering how it actually stacks up in the end.
Great news! Thanks for the heads up! I'm looking forward to seeing Sons of Anarchy in HD on FX-HD. I just watched the Season Finale, but it would be worth re-watching the Season in HD.

That was a series I bagged primarily because I couldn't see it in HD. Now, after reading all the raves in the thread here, I want to check it out. Here's hoping my TWC division picks this channel up along with the highly coveted and much requested Planet Green-HD and QVC-HD.

dennis1 12-06-08, 01:12 AM In the last couple of weeks, TW Desert Cities has added six new HD channels (not counting replacing MOJO with MGM): Disney, Hallmark Movies, Science, Food Network, HGTV, and FSN. Big Ten Network supposedly coming soon.
We've been getting a lot of new HD channels recently (compared to very little over the last three years). Maybe our SDV is finally up and running.
TimeWarner is promising East feeds of the major premium HD channels this month in SoCal. Why do they think anyone cares about an East feed of a channel they already have as opposed to simply adding more HD premium networks. IE, I could care less about Cinemax HD East when I have Cinemax HD West. I would much rather they added MoreMax in HD.
WilliamR 12-08-08, 08:58 AM TWC in Northeast Ohio quietly added MGM HD over the weekend.
ctown18 12-08-08, 11:46 AM TWC in Northeast Ohio quietly added MGM HD over the weekend.
Does anyone know why, or how the HD stations are added? For example, the NYC area has all of these new HD stations. Is it a national contract and not a local franchise agreement? If it is, why does it take so damn long to get it? I live in the NE Ohio area, and no one seems to have a clue at the local office when I call. By the way, why did they take away USAHD after the Olympics were over? I don't want to here crap about bandwidth. My frustration continues, because our HD content here sucks!!!

1) Both national and local carriage agreements are required (although the local one is somewhat minor...)
2) USAHD was only available for the Olympics because they were part of an Olympics package created by NBC-Universal that included their web content. It expired after the games, and a new deal had to be reached for the channels full time (which has finally happened recently).
TWC in Northeast Ohio quietly added MGM HD over the weekend.
This is TWC way. In our division, the only way to know when new HD is added is by checking the guide. Occasionally they put out a flyer or something, but never any dates when anything is coming. It's frustrating.
TWC NYC update:
The previously scheduled launches of Africa Channel HD, HSN HD, Spike HD, Nick HD, and NBA TV HD on December 17th in N. Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Mt. Vernon, and in Woodside, Elmhurst, and Maspeth on December 22nd, has been postponed.
so unless other areas are getting these (or already have them) - gotta make a few changes to the first post.
(I know NBATV HD is one that others have....)
also, they are pulling Sleuth from the lineup on January 14th. Sounds like that network isn't going to make it (and wont be launching an HD simulcast).
Looking forward to that 12/17 HD update for TWC North Texas, but I wish SCI-FI HD was a part of that list. Looking forward to FX HD now that DAMAGES and NIP/TUCK are coming back.
bob2274 12-08-08, 10:04 PM Does anyone know why, or how the HD stations are added?!
From what I understand (this is with all cable companies), a lot of times channels are added immediately after a local carriage agreement, making it impossible for local system employees to even know in advance that negotiations are going on since they are done confidentially. I guess one big issue in local negotiations are how many local ads can appear on the channel, determining how many ads a system can sell.
sirjonsnow 12-08-08, 10:24 PM About ready to dump their DVR and get an HD Tivo - they put a prompt up during a tire ad to press the "A" triangle button to get coupons in the mail, not too annoying in itself, but then there was a big ad prompt popup during an instant replay on MNF. Are you f'ing kidding me???
Looks like parts of SoCal have Versus and Golf HD on separate channels now.
hdtvfan2005 12-09-08, 12:42 AM San Diego has yet to get the separate channels. 767 will be Golf HD and 741 will be VS HD though they haven't signed on yet. Tomorrow they will.
Timothy31 12-09-08, 02:45 AM I can confirm Versus and Golf have split here in North Texas.
URFloorMatt 12-09-08, 06:00 AM also, they are pulling Sleuth from the lineup on January 14th. Sounds like that network isn't going to make it (and wont be launching an HD simulcast).
No one else has pulled it, so I'm not sure. Back in the summer NBCU announced it was consolidating its cable networks in New York, with Sleuth and Universal HD reporting to USA Network (and Chiller reporting to Sci Fi).
It may be a carriage issue with TWC, though usually you hear about those things.
EDIT: No, I'm right. It's probably a carriage issue. Admittedly, this doesn't explain why Sleuth is getting the axe but none of the other NBCU properties are. It may have something to do with NBC launching Sleuth by shutting down Trio a couple years ago.

Yeah, but for the past 2 years SI has been getting a steady stream of new HD channels... you had way more than double what we in Manhattan have had for the past few years. I'm lucky enough to be in northern Manhattan and we go from 28 today to just about 100 on the 17th (or so, certain sections of the whole city may have to wait another week or two to get the full complement).
It looks like this is being accomplished not by SDV but by eliminating something like 40 or the 70+ analogs channels they still carried. Thus it also appears we aren't going to be "MDNed" just yet (new boxes are HDCs w/ODN for the past year or so).
Riverside_Guy 12-09-08, 08:42 AM 2) USAHD was only available for the Olympics because they were part of an Olympics package created by NBC-Universal that included their web content. Did you notice TWC opened up USAHD in our market for the US Open? Soon as it concluded, it went away. I managed to catch one episode of Burn Notice in HD!
Riverside_Guy 12-09-08, 08:45 AM also, they are pulling Sleuth from the lineup on January 14th. Sounds like that network isn't going to make it (and wont be launching an HD simulcast).

xenophonite 12-09-08, 02:37 PM Update on SciFi HD in KC. I mentioned before that a great deal of 16:9 content was not shown in full HD. It would show 16:9 within a 4:3 box. Well now they fixed it and all content that is 16:9 is shown in full HD. KC must be piloting the SciFi channel. Everything looks good now so maybe they'll do a SciFi rollout soon.
Fortunately, 4:3 content is not stretched on SciFi (of what I've seen so far).
BTW, KC also got NHL Network today. Well over 70 HD channels in KC market now.

1) SciFi HD has existed for a long while (on DirecTV, Comcat)... so there is no 'piloting' going on...
2) 16:9 does not automaitcally mean HD. Sci Fi (like every cable network) has plenty of older content that was produced in 16:9 but is not available in HD, and will be shown 'windowboxed'.
xenophonite 12-09-08, 03:17 PM 1) I meant piloting SciFi on TWC.
2) I realize that but there was definitely a problem with true HD 16:9 not showing in full 16:9 on TWC SciFi. Most was showing 16:9 within a 4:3 box. It is now fixed. (Was talked about on last page).
Whether it's a 'pilot' or not, there were problems before that are now fixed, which is the purpose of doing a pilot so that may be the case.

dennis1 12-10-08, 12:58 AM Golf and Versus have been split on TW Desert Cities.
Plus, they've thrown in E! HD, for laughs.
hdtvfan2005 12-10-08, 02:46 AM San Diego has the channels split but have an authorization screen. Both Channels require expanded basic. Desert Cities and San Diego have plans for E! HD. More HD should come soon. SciFi and USA HD will be added. They did Mention ABC Family HD, Speed HD, and FX HD. CNBC HD will probably be added but this is probably going to be next year.
Riverside_Guy 12-10-08, 07:50 AM The SD version has been 'hidden' for like 2-3 months... They're adding it 'officially' next month.
There ARE those of us who have no access to QAM channels, ya know<g>!
Riverside_Guy 12-10-08, 07:54 AM 1) SciFi HD has existed for a long while (on DirecTV, Comcat)... so there is no 'piloting' going on...
2) 16:9 does not automaitcally mean HD. Sci Fi (like every cable network) has plenty of older content that was produced in 16:9 but is not available in HD, and will be shown 'windowboxed'.
Exactly what do you mean by "windowboxed?" The horrid, horrid, 100% UNnecessary practice of showing 16:9 content with black bars on all 4 sides? While one CAN use the zoom button without distorting anything, there is NO REASON AT ALL for this, it's just sloppy assed work from the channel.

Agreed. The networks should zoom SD 16:9 content themselves. Their equipment could do a *much* better job of it than most TVs, and certainly better than the 8300! Even my wife notices how crappy the 8300 zoom is.

Confirming that VS and GOLF have split in HD for TWC North Texas (DFW area).
scsiraid 12-10-08, 10:28 AM Confirming that VS and GOLF have split in HD for TWC North Texas (DFW area).
They are split in Raleigh/Cary too... But... They ended up on opposite channels from where they said they would be. Also, for cablecards, the streams are backwards. Tuning VSHD on 283 gets you GolfHD. TiVo has the right guide data though...
GrouchoDude 12-10-08, 10:35 AM Did you notice TWC opened up USAHD in our market for the US Open? Soon as it concluded, it went away. I managed to catch one episode of Burn Notice in HD!
I caught 3 of 'em during the Olympics!

NO!
You don't want them zooming in 16:9 SD content!
Then people will think its crappy HD.
holl_ands 12-10-08, 02:03 PM When you Letterbox within a 640x480 SD frame, it becomes a tiny 640x360 "Postage Stamp",
well short of a low-rez widescreen (e.g. 720x480) upconverted to FILL a HD frame.
NO!

So? It is SD either way. It would be better looking SD with their equipment scaling instead of mine.

But the point is too many people will think its supposed to be HD. And complain that it looks like crap.

Maybe, but why do we care if people complain about that? I am sure they get plenty of complaints about various black bars and horrible stretching schemes as it is. Oh well, it will cease to be an issue eventually.

It's always going to be an issue...
There will always be 16:9 SD-only content.

Almost a guaranteed yes.
Any cable system that will continue to offer Extra Innings has to add the channel. (many TWC regions have already announced a 1/1/09 addition)
MLB Network will launch to the Digital Explorer Pak on 1/1/09 on channel 100.
That is not in the HD channel range.

I should probably add on... they're only obligated to add the SD channel...
Many are also adding the HD channel... but I'm sure not all regions will right away.

On my box, they're channels with no title and shows To Be Announced. When you select them, they display "Time Warner Cable" "Channel reserved for future use"

obrienaj 12-11-08, 10:44 PM I will be upgrading from regular digital cable to HDTV Cable via Time Warner Southern Tier (NY) at Christmas. The features that you would be concerned with would be the following:
Channel 3/4 RF output
Composite video output
S-Video output
Component video output (YPrPb format)
HDMI
IEEE-1394
160GB hard drive (which many including myself consider too small)
eSATA port used to attach an external hard drive that might or might not work depending on the software loaded in the box
Baseband RCA audio out
RCA S/PDIF audio out
TOSLINK audio out
Last night, I found 6 "reserved" channels in the HD lineup down here in Dallas.

hdtvfan2005 12-13-08, 03:08 PM TWC San Diego has added BioHD and it's SDV. No guide data but that might not be until Sunday or even monday. I think they will have to deploy the Tuning resolver. VS and Golf HD are still coming soon.
Also: HMC HD is also up but it has been for a few days.

No biggie. Support (not advertised or officially supported by TWC) for eSATA means expansion drives are easy to add. I've got nearly a terabyte of storage with my SA8300 (160 GB internal; 750 GB external).

There is a problem: you do not know whether or not the version of ODN and the middleware that your box will use is capable of handling until you try it. You could buy an eSATA drive only to find out that it is only good as another drive for your computer or your network attached storage because the software on the cable box cannot support it without crashing.

The new Samsung HD-DVR can be had with a 320 GB HDD. Also Buffalo uses SARA and not Navigator. Navigator is the TWC in house guide.
bob2274 12-14-08, 10:27 PM Time Warner will do anything to keep MASN off of its North Carolina systems. http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA6620521.html?q=masn
It looks like they are trying to buy time, hoping that the five commissioners don't rule before Kevin Martin resigns and the new administration takes over. If they don't make the ruling by then, it could be months before a decision is made since it will take so long to get a new commissioner in. Time Warner lost their appeal of the arbitrator's ruling so miserably, they have no chance of getting a ruling in their favor no matter who is in charge.
Time Warner says that programming on MASN is of very little interest to North Carolina customers, and not everyone should be forced to pay for it. (The Nationals & Orioles are about 250-400 miles away.) They want to carry the channel in a digital tier, even though every other regional sports network they carry is on basic cable. Here are a few lines from one of the papers filed with the FCC-
In Southwestern Wyoming, TWC carries FS Rocky Mountain on basic cable, while the Colorado Rockies and most of its programming are 330 miles away in Denver.
In Southwestern Kansas, TWC carries FS Kansas City/Midwest, while the Royals are 370 miles away.
In Southeastern Alabama, Time Warner has FS South and SportSouth, showing the Braves from 230 miles away.
In Northeastern Oklahoma, TWC carries FS Southwest / FS Houston (one channel), showing the Rangers from 250 miles and the Astros from 450 miles away.
TWC carries FS West and Prime Ticket In Hawaii, showing the Angels and Dodgers from 2500 miles away.
I can see their reasoning for wanting to carry the NFL Network on a sports tier, since they carry other league channels there. The bottom line though, is that these channels don't pose a threat to any other programming since they are independently owned, making it really easy for TWC (and other operators) to shut them out. You'll never see them shun a channel like FSN or a channel owned by a cable operator like they're doing here.
muzikool 12-15-08, 11:33 PM Great news on such a large amount of HD channels being added to TWC North Dallas! I just noticed the "future use" channels tonight, myself.
In an unrelated question, I was wondering if someone could tell me what DVR box TWC North Dallas is offering now. I've had the Motorola DCT6416 III box for close to two years now and I'm thinking about exchanging it for whatever is new, just curious what that is. I looked at the Moto website and some of the new boxes look really nice.
Riverside_Guy 12-16-08, 10:36 AM The new Samsung HD-DVR can be had with a 320 GB HDD. Also Buffalo uses SARA and not Navigator. Navigator is the TWC in house guide.
But the question remains if TWC will order such boxes in the first place. The good news is that there SHOULD be no issues of a larger drive in the box... but there's a LOT more to swapping an internal drive... specifically if they allow the full software suite to be installed from the head end.
It seems ( from other forums here) that Canadians can fairly easily swap out the internal drive and be up and running. I'm not so sure I've read much credible evidence that someone in a US based MSO has done such. Terabyte drives seems to be close to 100 bucks now-a-days, so MY preference would be to swap out the internal drive.
Muzikool, I know that the DCH boxes (which IMO look more like high-end home theater compments than the DCT boxes which look like WINAMP skins) are available in the North Texas payment centers. I replaced both my DCTs with DCHs (one DCH 3416 and one DCH 6416) weeks ago.

I told the president of my division to order the Samsung SMT-H3090 with the 320 GB HDD option.
DSperber 12-16-08, 07:44 PM I told the president of my division to order the Samsung SMT-H3090 with the 320 GB HDD option. How can this new equipment be designed without a 1394/firewire port?
I thought it was an FCC requirement (for what, 4 years now?) that cable companies MUST supply a box with a functioning 1394 port if the subscriber requests it.
So why do DVR-makers not build them according to FCC spec? This prevents this piece of equipment from satisfying a subscriber's request, thus requiring the cable company to retain old equipment (e.g. from Motorola which does have a functioning 1394 port).
However if the cable system infrastructure requires the newer boxes, for some reason, then this seems to put them in a Catch 22?
Very strange to me. I must not be seeing something.

The SMT-H3050 has a IEEE1394 port. The SMT-H3050 has an RF modulator something the SMT-H3090 lacks.
This is true but TW basically doesn't care or officially support the 1394 port, same as the eSATA port. It's there and you can use it (depending on software revision) but they will be of zero help to you if you have issues with it. TW basically hates tech savvy subs, they prefer the no brain sheep that think their DVR is the best on the market.

DSperber 12-17-08, 12:27 AM The SMT-H3050 has a IEEE1394 port.Interesting.
I wonder if it's just a web page documentation oversight on the 3090, not mentioning 1394. It's not actually mentioned in the "specs" for the 3050 either, which is what I was looking at for the 3090 and which prompted my comment.
Nevertheless, if truly missing from the 3090, I wonder why... when they had it on the 3050?
Oh well. Not relevant for TWC/Socal anyway. And fortunately, 1394 has been on every STB/DVR (all Motorola DCT/DCH models) I've had from Comcast/TWC since 2004. Me very DVHS-happy.
Note: JVC has apparently stopped making DVHS machines. Fortunately I still have my 40K and DT100U boxes in perfect working order, and lots of tape.

Ah but that's because I don't get them at all, having a Passport box!
AND it actually was from 30... remember we "lost" MOJO before the transition!
Still, we DO need to wait a bit to see what shakes out... first order of business is to actually deliver the gray channels (the ones you describe as not being mapped correctly). I count 8 we were supposed to get but don't yet (i.e.no guide data and can't manually tune into). Then again, they say 5 channels that were delayed to 12/22 are "postponed" with no idea when they will be coming.
Complicating matters, as usual their official channel lineup is not updated at all and if it follows previous practices, probably will take 2-6 months to GET updated!
Discovered that I can't simply change my series recordings from the SD channel to it's HD equivalent, looks like I'll have to go to the HD channel and re-do the series recording, then delete the old one.

I think things are changing by the hour (2 hours ago I did a cold boot and fetched 6 days of listings, now I see only one day's worth). I spent a LONG while in my series recordings list, organizing things so I can get to stuff. I had a whole bunch of stuff on A&E, FX, USA, BBC etc. All SD stuff, so I moved them all to the top of the list... I'll have to wait to see a new ep pop up for each one until I can re-do it for the HD channel (yes I know BBC will stay SD for the time being). So far, Sanctuary is the only one I can change over (as in create a new series and delete the old one).
While doing this, I noticed some of the "gray" channels I listed are now working. AND we are going to be stuck with several "no channel listed" for the premiums that moved into the 600s. It usually takes over a month to get rid of those distractions.
Wow. Any new channels that are not listed as 'known twc deals' in first post of this thread?
Did you get all of the premium movie channels, like HBO comedy, signature, zone, MAX thriller, etc?
everything that was added has been expected for over a month - they are already listed in the first post
(except Lifetime - that was announced - but did not show up)
(Africa Channel-HD , HSN-HD, Nickelodeon-HD, and Spike-HD had been announced last month as well - but they were officially postponed)
Marcus Carr 12-17-08, 06:23 PM TV One-HD has launched on Time Warner Cable's NYC Region system...with additional launches expected in early January 2009, according to network officials.

ErieMarty 12-17-08, 08:53 PM I see a post on KC HD channel list and that of NYC area..with all their HD Options...and I am from NE OHIO Area...and all we get are 15 HD channels not counting Locals...
Unfricken real...
what will it take my local area to catch up...
It will take a switch to DirecTV! TWCNY advertised new HD for us a month ago. Fx, Fox News, Speed and Fox Business - to this date we got nothing. I'm very close to switching and TW has until spring to do something to keep me.
tcreech 12-17-08, 09:38 PM Aside from the crummy hd lineup, here's one that really frosts me.
I pay extra for the HD tier.
I pay extra for HBO, and for HBO OD.
HBO East is available in HD.
Why is there no HD content available from HBO OD ?
Just venting....

What's the story with this whole Northern Manhattan/Southern Manhattan split? Why does the Northern half get a deluge of HD channels and Southern gets nothing? I know this is all probably related to the analog shut-off and a lot of additional bandwidth coming our way, but what gives!!

basically - logistics required them to do the 2 halves in separate stages (as they have done each boro separately over the last year+)

emailists 12-18-08, 01:49 AM I just saw the new HD channels pop up here 2 nights ago right in the middle of a film on HBO2.
I must say that in my brief viewings so far, the compression artifacts on any kind of movement are just unacceptable. Does anyone know if bandwidth has been increased, or if things like the main HBO channel gets more data?
Now to be fair I recently moved and am now watching on a 130" diagonal screen,
so I may be seeing more artifacts than other people, but I'm hoping for Fios one day.
Another thing I'm steamed at - I think it's called HD extra, or whatever INHD + HDnet used to be called. It started as 4 channels, then went to 3 and with the demise of Mojo (also a bummer since I used to edit a series for them), is now only 2 channels for the same $6 or $8. I intend to contact TW and state they must adjust their pricing or include HDnet into some other package.

I don't know if "rolling out" is the right phrase... more like oozing out at a snail's pace. Still no indication as to when we'll see them here in Charlotte; and less than a month now until BSG comes back, 'Burn Notice' on USA, 'Damages' on FX, etc. We'll be extremely lucky if we see any of 'em in HD. :(

Cable companies to delay digital switch
Move is to avoid confusion during February switch to digital broadcast
The Associated Press
updated 6:47 p.m. ET, Wed., Dec. 17, 2008
PHILADELPHIA - Cable TV operators say they'll voluntarily stop moving analog channels to more expensive digital tiers of service between Dec. 31 and March 1, to avoid confusing customers as the nation switches to digital broadcast transmissions in February.
In letters to Congress this week, the National Cable & Telecommunications Association said cable TV companies don't want to add a "layer of complexity" as U.S. broadcasters begin to transmit all-digital signals after Feb. 17.
Cable companies are facing regulatory scrutiny over their practice of switching analog channels to digital — leaving analog consumers with fewer channels to watch unless they use adapters, rent a digital set-top box or upgrade to digital. Cable operators say they are trying to accommodate customers by offering promotions such as free adapters.
Cable TV operators' decision to move analog channels to digital frees them to use their network bandwidth for more high-definition content and other services. It is not related to the national switch to digital broadcasting. Regulators are investigating whether providers are misleading customers into thinking the two events are linked, which could prompt more people to opt for digital video services.
Once cable operators resume moving analog channels to digital, from March 2 to June 30, the companies will give analog households at least one piece of equipment free for one year to let them continue watching in analog. Certain fees also will be waived temporarily. The industry promised to notify customers and franchising officials at least 30 days in advance of the switch.
Consumers Union, which had criticized cable's channel-switching tactics, hailed the move as a "welcome first step to help consumers navigate a costly maze of confusion surrounding the (digital TV) transition."
But the group also said that while the voluntary quiet period provides short-term relief to consumers, it doesn't resolve problems with "high prices and discriminatory practices."

O - that....
That doesn't apply here - they already dumped 40+ analog channels (leaving about 30 for all the local channels) - and won't have any need to drop any more for a long time.

rest should ber available by next week.
But it's like they picked the worst ones to go ahead with, like LIFETIME MOVIES and friggin' HALLMARK HD!

Yeah lol. Oh well, I didn't have CNNHD, TBSHD, HISHD, FOODHD, HGTVHD, A&EHD, DSCHD, APHD, NGCHD, FSNHD in DeSoto yet which were given to Dallas a while back. While I am slightly excited just to see these, the others would be great.
Timothy31 12-18-08, 08:15 PM Yeah they picked ones no one cares about unless your a woman you don't watch LMN. Disney is for kids, foxnews err fixed news i can do without. I'm not a traveler or into car racing so travel and speed do nothing for me either.
Well, we do have some I care about. However, channels like ABC Family are worthless for HD. I have yet to see ANY HD content on them. I saw a movie in the guide once that we wanted to watch so I tuned in and SD 4:3 pillarboxed!?!?! What a waste.
Now, we should have Fox News HD soon and FxHD which are channels I want. Hell, I was starting to watch CNN because it was in HD! I'm really waiting on some of the NBC Universal channels - Sci-Fi and USA.
bob2274 12-18-08, 09:49 PM ABC Family HD is just one of the channels that Disney has forced on cable companies by packaging it with the ESPN channels.

Well not quite there are still 5 missing. I just compiled this little list.
I can now confirm here in Lewisville these channels are now live.
738 - Weather Channel
741 - Fox News
751 - Lifetime
758 - Learning Channel
759 - Travel
760 - Planet Green (Do not have it)
761 - Science
764 - Bio (Do not have it)
768 - FX
774 - Hallmark
775 - Disney
778 - ABC Family (do not have it)

788 - Speed
790 - CBS College (do not have it)

Well we are slated to get both Fox News and Fox Business HD. Tim, where are you located? You may want to add it to your profile since it's relevant with TWC's HD line ups varying so much from division to division.

Have you ever seen anything in writing as to what HDXtra actually delivers? Several times, I've tried pouring through their website, but haven't seen anything.
As I already have DVR service, it's 5 bucks more. Honestly, I think the 2 HDNet channels it has are worth it as I do watch a lot of stuff on those channels.
Riverside_Guy 12-19-08, 10:53 AM Thanks for the info- I didn't think I was able to receive MGM HD - I'll try now. Anyone else know how TW has allocated bandwidth to get so many new HD channels?

Here in NYC, instead of forcing Craptigator on everyone and using lots of SDV, they have eliminated something like 40 analog channels. We just went from 30 to 94. Far as I read, there are still another 30 or so analogs... but there's only a small group of HD channels we are NOT getting... AND the are 5 promised ones that didn't make this week and are officially "postponed" with no commitment to any specific date.
Of course, what I want is for them to kill the remaining 30 odd analog channels then give all the HD channels a bit more bandwidth, like noting less than 12mb/s (something like that, I can't really state exact figures, but I think we have a lot of HD running in the 6-8 range).
Riverside_Guy 12-19-08, 10:59 AM O - that....
That doesn't apply here - they already dumped 40+ analog channels (leaving about 30 for all the local channels) - and won't have any need to drop any more for a long time.
Bite your tongue my friend! How about dropping those 30 and increasing the allocated bandwidth to each HD channel?
On second thought, I guess that have to carry some forever... the unscrambled channels (locals), which is what, 7 channels?
In any case, there are still 4 HDs I want... some of which exist now, some of where aren't launched just yet (IFC, Sundance, TCM, BBC).
Riverside_Guy 12-19-08, 11:13 AM I hope so too and according to twcinci USAHD and SCIFIHD may be added by years end (I doubt it though).
I had great hope for SciFiHD, but I have seen 2 shows that certainly DO have HD versions (Stargate and Enterprise) that they are NOT using, we get SD with black bars all 4 sides. At least they aren't as bad as stretch-o-vision (TNT, TBS) which takes the 4:3 SD and horizontally stretches and distorts it.

One time they made an announcement on the website (and on the bill) that they would add the Sportspacka to HDXtra... it was a long time ago...

there's actually like 20+ locals (not only wcbs, wnbc, wabc, etc - but a small bunch of independent OTA channels, AND the local cable public access)
(and dont worry - they are still about 15 analog channels that they removed that are not being used yet)

the early seasons of SG1 were never shown in HD (don't forget - the show started in 1997, and aired on Showtime for its first 5 seasons, but always in 16:9)

Ah, but it sure looks like it was done on film... if so they COULD give us an HD version. I know all of Enterprise was run in HD on UNIHD (did ya notice that it went from UNHD to UNIHD?). Haven't caught any Atlantis' (on sciFi) yet, but that's another one I have seen in HD, so the transfer exists. Only 2 eps left, but we SHOULD see them in HD.
Did you also notice that NY1 has HD 4:3 studio and some field cameras doing HD, some 16:9, some 4:3. What a patchwork!

The studios (MGM) would have to create an HD version - thats not up to SciFi....
hdtvfan2005 12-19-08, 05:33 PM TWC San Diego added a few new HD channels. ABC Family HD (735), FX HD (752), and Speed HD (793). ABC and FX are on their HD equivalent channels while Speed is on another HD channel since their is a duplicate HD premium movie channel. I'm sure thats another channel map for that QAM. Bio HD, VS HD, and Golf HD aren't up yet. No idea why.

Dang i hope they show some of that love to south Texas soon. The last thing they added that was MGMHD but it was a replacement for MojoHD. We haven't seen a true addition since January.(Added NATHD)
dennis1 12-20-08, 01:46 AM TW Desert Cities added another two channels to their HD roster today: USA HD and CNBC HD. Finally, they've added a couple of channels I might even tune in to.
xenophonite 12-20-08, 09:00 AM KC now has...
Showtime2 HD
Starz Kids HD
...in living color. They've also labeled HBO, CMAX with a 1, implying more are coming.
SciFi, USA, Bravo, TMC and others recently added too. If they keep this pace up, they may pass up satellite next year. Now 70+ HD in KC when including PPV/OD.
TWC KC just added yesterday...
HBO2 HD
HBOSignature HD
More Max HD
I think there are 78 total HD with TWC KC, more expected in next few weeks.

xenophonite 12-20-08, 09:45 AM ^G4, Style, Africa Channel, Nick, Spike, MLB among others. See 'known deals' in first post of this thread. Many more of those likely coming. KC and NYC have been consistently getting new HD channels before other TWC markets.

emailists 12-22-08, 03:34 AM Anyone else seem to not be getting audio on some of the new HBO HD channels - 655 and 656 in Manhattan for me have no audio, but the standard def feeds of the same channels do have audio. The other HBO's are fine.
But then again, after my move to a new apartment, TW can't even initalize my boxes- and have had to bring me new ones. Funny thing is that when I arrived the cable was live, and I just plugged my boxes and modem in and they just worked. Once they paid me a service call, nothing worked correctly.
UPDATE: Well I guess I am a complete idiot, because I called TW asking if they had complaints about no sound on these HBO channels, and the customer rep sent a signal to refresh my box and now I simply have no cable at all - "this cable box is not authorized for service"
I guess that will be a lesson to never call TW late night or on a weekend. It's obvious that their database is so screwed up they cant simply move a customer 2 miles away and keep track of anything.
From the WSJ -
"Last week, 40 stations in Ohio shut off their analog signals for five minutes to show viewers what their analog TVs would look like without converter boxes: a blank screen. Viewers flooded a broadcasters' hot line with calls to ask how to get the government coupons and how to operate converter boxes, among other questions, said Christine Merritt, executive vice president of the Ohio Association of Broadcasters. She added that the hot line got so many calls -- about 7,500 -- that the phone system overloaded and crashed."

Not quite, it means giving up a 8300HD running Passport for a 8300HDC running ODN (in the NYC market). A LOT of folks don't want to go with ODN given the things that don't work on it that do work in Passport. So far, we DO have a choice because they haven't gone and forced MDN on the 8300HD boxes (like they have in other areas).
obrienaj 12-23-08, 06:44 PM I just picked up a Scientific Atlanta 8300HD from TW as part of my preparation for the HDTV that will be opened on Christmas Day. I see on Scientific Atlanta's web site there is a multi room 8300HD, does anyone know if Time Warner has these as an option ?
Andy
(TW Southern Tier NY)
hdtvfan2005 12-23-08, 07:19 PM TWC did test the Multi room feature in NY but it had problems. It also needed good cable wiring. The new Samsung SMT-H3090 HD-DVR does support MoCA, DLNA, Ethernet, and uPnP support. The Samsung box can also share contents to non cable box components so it can be used as a media server. The new Cisco 8552, 8642, and 8652 all support this new technology.
As HDTVfan stated, TWC tested Multi-Room DVR in my market and scrapped it due to problems. Plus, I think they knew at the time they were going to be deploying their own in house guide and they've had massive problems with that so far. Adding MRV to it as well would probably have added to the disaster that is Navigator.
I'm awaiting the MRV from DirecTV in anticipation of switching this spring. I'm giving TWC until the weather breaks to make some moves. Either get us a good version of Navigator or more importantly add some HD content.
I may have to switch to the Variety Tier now. HD Tier gives me HDNet, HDNet Movies, Universal HD. Variety gives me a ton of SD channels plus Animal Planet HD, Travel HD, Fox Business News HD, ESPNews HD and Science HD. Still would hate to give up the HDNet channels.

Hey BenJF3,
I'm getting really frustrated with TWCNY also. Where did you see the announcement for these new HD channels? I don't see them on their pittiful website. A couple of my favorite shows are starting up in mid January (BSG-SciFi-HD, Burn Notice-USA-HD), and I will be VERY upset if these channels aren't added by then. What could they possibly be waiting for? The negotiations are done, and SDV is installed and working here. I've tried calling, but no one seems to know anything. Watching other areas get these channels is infuriating!! Does anyone have a good explanation on what could possibly be the hold up? Negotiations and bandwidth are no longer an obstacle.

DSperber 12-29-08, 07:45 PM I happened to be channel surfing on my SD TV late last night and stumbled past Bravo, where a few episodes of "West Wing" were playing. I noticed that it was presented letterboxed on SD.
Curious about how it would be shown on the NEWLY AVAILABLE BRAVO-HD CHANNEL WE JUST GOT, I turned on my HDTV to check.
Alas... the geniuses at NBC Universal have decided to broadcast it letterboxed as well on Bravo-HD, inside of the 4:3 area. So the expected black pillar bars on left and right of the 4:3 area, plus black bars from the letterboxing on top and bottom within the 4:3 area. Nice! "Midget picture".
They either don't have the rights to the HD version of the show (seems unlikely, since it was on NBC), or they just don't want to record/broadcast HD on syndicated shows, or they're just f'n with us HD viewers who have the gall to believe that Bravo-HD should maybe broadcast HD shows in HD! Why else would they need an HD channel, if not to broadcast an HD show in HD???
Morons.
I suppose we should be thankful they didn't broadcast it in stretch-o-vision, like TNT-HD and TBS-HD would surely do.
hdtvfan2005 12-29-08, 11:14 PM Maybe there was an issue. It should be in HD. NBC's facility in Burbank can play back and record HD content. Burbank controls KNSD, KNTV, and KNBC. Don't know what NBCUni does with their cable channels.

Before we got SciFi HD, most of their series were letterboxed to 4:3 systems. Which means on a 16:9, one gets the black bars on all 4 sides (someone called it window-boxed). THAT was fine by me because I could use the zoom function to get it on the full screen without the distortion of stretch-o-vision.
Oddly enough, even on the HD channel, any promo for a series that was shot in 16:9 and is broadcast in proper 16:9 HD seems to be done with 4 black bars?

How old was the episode?
West Wing wasn't in HD for its entire run - the fact that it was 16:9 doesn't mean an HD version is available.

President Bartlett had just given a State of the Union speech and Marlie Matlin was providing the after-poll numbers.
This was an episode from before I started watching, so I don't know whether it was truly in HD or not. But definitely 16:9.

The Business of Television
UNHAPPY NEW YEAR! Time Warner Cable To Yank MTV, Nickelodeon & Comedy Central Off The Air In NY, LA, Everywhere
From Nikki Finke's LA Weekly 'Deadline Hollywood' Blog - December 30, 2008
What an awful way to ring in 2009. It turns out that Viacom claims it has been trying to negotiate a "fair" renewal of its prized cable channels for months and months, but reputedly Time Warner Cable has been unresponsive and "unreasonable". The nation's 2nd largest cable system operator, in turn, claims Viacom is asking for "exorbitant" increases in carriage fees which would have to be passed along to the customer. So now this fight between the two Big Media giants will hurt cable viewers. At 12:01 AM on January 1st, just after the ball drops in Time Square, Time Warner Cable's 13 million subscribers will lose 19 Viacom channels. The howling starts here, especially by parents home for the holidays with children who won't have access to their favorite shows like SpongeBob Squarepants and Dora The Explorer, and tweens/teens wanting to see new episodes of those new unreality Reality TV series The City and Bromance, and twentysomethings and older who get their news from The Daily Show With Jon Stewart or The Colbert Report.
This affects all U.S. Time Warner cable subscribers including those in New York and Los Angeles. Alex Dudley, a vice president at Time Warner Cable, the nation's second-largest cable operator, is telling reporters that the dispute with Viacom "is that they have asked for an exorbitant increase in their carriage fees and their network ratings are sagging. Basically we're trying to hold the line for our customer." Time Warner Cable claims Viacom has asked for fee increases of between 22% and 36% per channel, but Sumner Redstone's company maintains the increases would cost less than $.25 a month for the package of channels per subscriber who spend a fifth of total TV time watching Viacom shows but its fees make up less than 2.5% of the Time Warner cable bill. (Sports channels are paid the biggest cable premium). But Time Warner Cable also is complaining that Viacom's popular shows are rerun on Web sites where Viacom collects advertising revenue that it does not share with Time Warner. On the other hand, Viacom has staked much of its revenue-growth prospects on squeezing higher carriage rates out of its cable and satellite affiliates despite an ad slowdown and weaker ratings.
Such negotiation battles between cable networks and cable system operators have happened before and lasted merely hours. In 2004, for example, Viacom's cable channels disappeared from EchoStar's Dish Network for two days while both sides fought over the terms of a new contract. And Time Warner blocked ABC from its cable systems in New York during a breakdown in contract negotiations with parent company Disney. So this one will either end fast or go on forever. It probably will depend on how many subscribers start flooding Time Warner Cable with obscene calls.
This is Viacom's just issued statement:
This move by Time Warner Cable to force such channels as Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and MTV off the air is another example of a cable company overreaching for profit at the expense of its viewers.
The renewal we are seeking is reasonable and modest relative to the profits TWC enjoys from our networks. We have asked for an increase of less than 25 cents per month, per subscriber, which adds up to less than a penny per day for all 19 of MTV Networks’ channels. We make this request because TWC has so greatly undervalued our channels for so long. Americans spend more than 20% of their TV viewing time watching our networks, yet our fees amount to less than 2.5% of what Time Warner generates from their average customer.
Throughout the country, we have negotiated equitable license agreement renewals, or are in the final stages of renewals, with virtually every cable and satellite carrier. Nevertheless, Time Warner Cable has dismissed our efforts at a fair compromise and has effectively chosen to deny its customers some of the most popular TV shows on the air.
As a result, we are sorry to say that for Time Warner Cable customers our networks will go dark as of 12:01 on January 1st, denying Time Warner customers shows like Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, and The Hills.
Ultimately, however, if Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV and the rest of our programming is discontinued – over less than a penny per day - we believe viewers will see this behavior by their cable company as outrageous.
Time Warner Cable subscribers who are being handed a January 1st $3 monthly increase in Raleigh, Orange County, Los Angeles, and New York City are simultaneously facing the removal of beloved shows across 19 channels.
We find it a shame that Time Warner Cable remains unreasonable at this time. We hope its leadership will have a change of heart and will seek to negotiate a fair renewal agreement.

Holy Sh!t!
This is why tying needs to be banned by the FCC. Please institute a well regulated Ala Carte system already or this is going to be the norm... wait it already became the norm.
Viacom should recognize that they are fortunate that the cable companies provide a free distribution system for the advertising on these channels from which Viacom derives outrageous profits. It is unbelievable that Viacom pays no fee for this service.
On the other hand, cable companies do make a profit from customers drawn to purchasing cable service in order to view the programming accompanying Viacom's profit - making advertising. Perhaps, both parties should deem it a fair exchange and let it go at that.
dad1153 12-30-08, 10:20 PM Viacom already has an ad asking TWC customers to complain: http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA6625759.html (scroll to the bottom of the story for video). :(
bakntime 12-31-08, 03:54 AM I don't have any real concept of the economics behind the situation here - I mean, I understand the debate and the basics, but I don't know the numbers. I don't know how much TW really makes off those channels, I don't know how many people actually watch them, I don't know how much money Viacom makes from having those channels on Time Warner, etc. But it seems to me that the increase they're looking for is too high. With the economy in a lull, it's all the more ridiculous.
Of all those channels that Viacom owns, the only ones I ever watch are Spike for the Star Trek episodes (and even those I haven't been watching for months) and Nickelodeon for the late night reruns of Fresh Prince, Family Matters, etc.
Honestly, I wouldn't miss any of those channels all that much. Viacom, I think, is a bit delusional as to the overall popularity of those channels collectively. While they may have a few popular shows, I think overall there's very little that's worth watching on those networks, and I'd guess that the general veiwership would back up that claim.
dad1153 12-31-08, 08:06 AM ^^^ Different strokes for different folks. Older viewers couldn't care less they're not getting Nickelodeon but might be upset to not be able to watch their favorite classics on TV Land. Parents might not care about "SpongeBob" or "Dora" but they'll get the brunt of kid outrage when their rugrats start complaining that their friends on non-TWC households can still watch "South of Nowhere" (The-N) or iCarly (Nickelodeon) while they're in the dark. And this week "Colbert," "Daily Show" and "South Park" are on repeats but, when they come back with new episodes, you bet your bippy I'm going to be off-the-charts poe'd at not being able to watch them when I'm paying almost $150 for my entire cable package.
Individually none of the Viacom channels are strong-enough to be missed. But, as a collective programming block that runs the gamut of tastes, the 19 Viacom channels reach a lot of people that will have something they like to watch potentially blocked. I can see TWC giving in when the calls of angry parents blasting them for depriving kids of their Nick Jr. cartoons (especially on a four-day weekend!) just as much as I can see the whole thing backfiring on Viacom for its greed. We'll know in 16 hours. :(
I don't have any real concept of the economics behind the situation here - I mean, I understand the debate and the basics, but I don't know the numbers.
Here's the economics. TWC has somewhere around 12,000,000 subscribers. (Go ahead, correct me:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:). A $3.00/year/subscriber increase is therefore $36,000,000. That's enough money to keep GM alive for another hour or so !!!!
Point is that these disputes are happening EVERY MONTH now! The FCC and your elected officials have to step in and regulate this. It is getting out of control to the point where I'm willing to just put up an antenna for broadcast programs. The practice of tying needs to be done away with. Check the link in my sig for more info. A truly Ala Carte system would benefit the masses. The only people that would be hit hard is sports fans and they obviously don't care because they continue to support it. I'd love to be able to pick what networks I want. It doesn't mean you bill is going to be $10 a month, but it would go down for most people. The basic premise is that the cable or sat provider charges a service/delivery fee for the infrastructure and the content providers offer the channels a fixed pricing. The market would determine what channels are worth what.

yea, and at midnight they are losing 19 channels ... LOL!
http://www.timewarnercable.com/nynj/mtv.html
We are negotiating earnestly, honestly and fairly with MTV Networks, but so far have been unable to reach an agreement or get an extension.
MTV Networks may pull these channels from your lineup on January 1st.
• MTV Networks wants our customers to pay millions more. They are currently demanding price increases that are nearly triple the rate of increase under our current agreement. These increases would be excessive even in a strong economy, but given the current conditions, it’s simply not fair to our customers.
• MTV’s demands are outrageous and would force our customers to pay millions of dollars more per year. MTV’s networks are not worth so much more today than they were yesterday, especially given the fact that their ratings are mostly declining in recent years.
• Much of their popular programming is also available for free online. In this economy, we don’t believe it’s appropriate to ask our customers to pay so much more for programming with declined ratings or that's available for free.
• We’ve successfully negotiated hundreds of programming agreements with other cable networks, many within the last few months. Our hope is that we will come to an agreement with MTV Networks that is fair to our customers.
Cable networks affected:
Nickelodeon/Nick at Nite
MTV
VH1
Spike

Comedy Central

VH1 Classic

Cable channels affected:

mbmotorsport 12-31-08, 10:52 AM Wow no music on demand .....Might not be the most popular but I like it ,,, Nice varity ... Maybe thats why TWC is selling their cable division... They are just starting to get a decent amount of HD about 50 channels in Milw WI ....
abcward 12-31-08, 10:58 AM I realize that Viacom might have unrealistic demands, but I love it when the giant that TWC is wants to try and tug at our heart strings and think we'll feel sorry for them. TWC as a company robs us customers for unrealistic fees every month and is making profits hand over fist, yet you want us to feel sorry for you? Boo freakin hoo.
You're a cable tv provider - negotiating deals with tv channels is what you do. Both TWC and Viacom need to stop looking for sympathy from their customers and act like big boys and get this contract complete. In this day and age of hard working people losing their jobs because of a crumbling financial market, these 2 profitable companies just look ignorant doing this garbage.

It doesn't affect music on demand entirely - just content from the MTV Networks (same with the other channels)

TWC is going to get killed on this!!!! How is it that Dish and Direct can work things like this out?

UNHAPPY NEW YEAR! Time Warner Cable To Yank MTV, Nickelodeon & Comedy Central Off The Air In NY, LA, Everywhere
From Nikki Finke's LA Weekly 'Deadline Hollywood' Blog - December 30, 2008
This is really going to suck without Nick, and Nicktoons.
Love me some TWC. They add all these HD channels and now they're getting rid of several more channels. Pure madness.
Tom Wellman 12-31-08, 01:24 PM Bummer, where do I go to get my Night Court fix? Other than that it wouldn't affect me. I wonder though, what does this mean for CBS O & O OTA stations that are on TWC. Fortunately in the San Diego KFMB which is the CBS affiliate in San Diego shouldn't be affected.
Ok TWC, I tell you what, I'll trade you all those Viacom channels for SciFi-HD, USA-HD, FX-HD, and FoxNews-HD.
Time Warner Still Pretending Core, Last Mile Fiber The Same
It's certainly cheaper than broadly deploying DOCSIS 3.0
10:03AM Wednesday Dec 31 2008 by Karl Bode
Instead of quickly deploying DOCSIS 3.0 technology like Comcast, Time Warner Cable decided to fight off Verizon FiOS with a new campaign that intentionally confuses consumers by blurring the line between last mile and core network fiber. Their latest website informs consumers that Time Warner Cable "gives you fiber optics without the hassle," but avoids the fact that last mile fiber offers much faster speeds than TWC's current DOCSIS 2.0 network.
Viacom and all of the other television companies should be so grateful for the cable systems that deliver their profit - creating advertising to millions of eyes around the country that they would be writing checks to the cable systems rather than asking for more money for themselves.
ESPN and all of the others would not even exist, let alone make big money from advertising, if it were not for cable.
dad1153 12-31-08, 01:42 PM I wonder though, what does this mean for CBS O & O OTA stations that are on TWC.
CBS Broadcast Group (and Showtime) split from Viacom a while back. This TWC-Viacom dispute will have no effect on CBS carriage on TWC systems whatsoever.
Jarrod_38 12-31-08, 01:44 PM There better be an agree today or I'm going to be mad. I love my The Fairly OddParents.
dad1153 12-31-08, 01:56 PM So do I but that doesn't make me unique or special, it just means... oh wait! :p
sirjonsnow 12-31-08, 02:05 PM I just want Comedy Central back in time for The Daily Show and Colbert when they come back from break next week or whenever.
I think TWC is doing the right thing, they want to keep the cost down for their customers, I for one won't miss much of that line up As I really don't watch mindless entertainment. So far here in WLA we get Universal HD, USA HD , World Cup coverage, Nat Geo HD, TLC HD Discovery HD.
Ever since TWC took over Adelphia the PQ and audio just plain sucks here we get popping audio drops loss of the picture due to weak/poor signals. I'm actually thinking about dumping the whole cable crap until they get their sh!t together and give us a better feed for what I'm paying for.
TV lately has become an aggravation due to the poor quality feeds popping audio drops picture breaking up and total loss of signal for a few seconds and the list goes on. They still think everybody likes the the TV guide with the Spam banner which takes away at least two lines of info and an added punch to the remote. Isn't that what commercials are for? Like we don't get enough spam on TV and they insist on jamming that crap down our throats via the TV guide. I like Dish's TV grid very professional and clean looking with no spam and am seriously thinking about MPG 4 feeds.

Viacom Rejects TWC Extension Offer; Time Warner Cable To Lose Viacom's MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon & Comedy Central In NY, LA, Everywhere
From Nikki Finke's LA Weekly 'deadlinehollywooddaily' blog - December 31, 2008
WEDNESDAY 10 AM: Now it's all about the PR war between these two Big Media giants. To counter Viacom's 12-hour media blitz blasting his company, Glenn Britt, President/CEO of Time Warner Cable just issued this statement about Viacom’s "threats" to pull MTV Networks from TWC customers:
Christmas is over, but Viacom is still playing Scrooge, threatening to pull its MTV Networks off of Time Warner Cable at midnight tonight unless we ask our customers to pay exorbitant price increases.
Viacom claims their demands equate to “pennies,” but that is misleading and insulting to our customers, from whom Viacom is trying to extort another $39 million annually – on top of the hundreds of millions of dollars our customers already pay to Viacom each year. That doesn’t sound like pennies to us. Demanding that our customers pay so much more for these few networks would be unreasonable in any economy, but it is particularly outrageous given the current economic conditions.
We sympathize with the fact that Viacom’s advertising business is suffering and that their networks’ ratings have largely been declining. However, we can’t abide their attempt to make up their lost revenue on the backs of Time Warner Cable customers. We’ve negotiated in good faith and made several concessions to help reach a fair and reasonable deal. We’ve asked for an extension of the current contract while we continue to negotiate. But Viacom doesn’t appear to be interested in what’s fair and reasonable for American consumers – they’re only interested in propping up their sagging bottom line, and they are poised to pull their networks from Time Warner Cable customers tonight.
Huge price increases like what Viacom is demanding threaten the ultimate value of cable TV. Time Warner Cable is a retail distributor of products we purchase wholesale. Wholesale programming costs are rising dramatically every year, and, like all multichannel distributors, we have to pass on at least a portion of the increases to our customers. Viacom’s MTV Networks are just a few of the hundreds of channels we carry. If every channel demanded huge, double-digit increases like what Viacom is trying to force our customers to pay, it would be impossible to keep the price of cable reasonable for our customers.
Time Warner Cable has reached hundreds of distribution agreements with other networks. In fact, we currently have deals with every other cable programmer. The negotiations aren’t always easy, but we work hard to reach agreements that are fair to our customers and to both businesses.
We hope Viacom won’t pull the MTV Networks from Time Warner Cable customers, and we’ll negotiate up to the last possible minute and beyond. But ultimately, it is Viacom’s decision. We implore them to join with us to reach a fair resolution or grant an extension, and we hope they won’t carry through with their threat to take their networks away from our customers tonight.

humdinger70 12-31-08, 02:57 PM TWC San Diego has turned on MLB Network. Channel 489 for SD, 789 for HD.
Both channels have programming on them - 789 showing some HD content (full wide-screen 16:9)
Think about the call to TWC, Viacom is pushing the cable subscribers to call in and demand they keep the line up. In the end it will just hurt the end user with a higher bill.... I say don't call in and gives us better channels like the op mantioned they got baseball in SD.
runback22 12-31-08, 03:42 PM I for one am sick of time warners bleeding heart crap. Its always the other guys fault and big ol time warner is looking out for us little guys. What a load of crap. Why dont I ever hear this with any other provider? Its always TW. First, they protected me from the NFL network, a couple of months back, we almost lost our local abc affiliate because TW was protecting us. Now, MTV networks is the next greedy company? At some point, TW has to realize that this good guy crap they try to portray is an insult to our intelligence.....The only pockets they are protecting is theirs.....
TravKoolBreeze 12-31-08, 03:48 PM You're a cable tv provider - negotiating deals with tv channels is what you do. Just because you were profitable 6 months ago or now doesn't mean something may happen to sink your company. Both Viacom and TWC want to keep positive cashflow and they know about how the recession is hurting both of them (less advertising money, less subscribers, inflation, employee and maintenance cost, etc.). The recession is giving a beating to everyone company and person, even well known brands (Sony, most of the Radio industry). To the consumer, it may look as nonsense but we should look at it fairly from all sides.
So my rates go up to cover increases in programming costs, but obviously not enough to actually cover those increases, so I lose programming, but am still paying for the increased costs ????:confused::confused:
I think TWC is doing the right thing, they want to keep the cost down for their customers
I call BS. They passed on the rate hike before they even negotiated with Viacom. How do you justify that?
They are out to get every cent they can, both from the customer, and the provider.

Viacom Rejects TWC Extension Offer; Time Warner Cable To Lose Viacom's MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon & Comedy Central In NY, LA, Everywhere
From Nikki Finke's LA Weekly 'deadlinehollywooddaily' blog - December 31, 2008
WEDNESDAY NOON: Viacom has rejected Time Warner Cable's request for a 15- to 30-day extension on the 12:01 AM January 1st deadline when the cable programmer pulls its 19 channels off the 2nd largest cable system operator. I'm told Viacom and TWC had no contact throughout yesterday until news of the Big Media battle broke. Suddenly, at 8 PM, TWC came to Viacom with an increase offer and the extension request. But Viacom rejected both out of hand. "It was bogus. The low-ball offer was clearly an excuse to ask for an extension and then use that in their press acrtivity today," a Viacom source claimed to me. "After we've been trying to meet with them for several weeks, we won't consider an extension unless they're prepared to really negotiate and come across with a reasonable offer." Insiders say Viacom President/CEO Philippe Dauman stayed in his office most of today waiting to hear from his TWC counterpart Glenn Britt, but the situation remains stalled. This is turning out to be Big Media brinkmanship at its most brutal with 13.3 million cable subscribers caught in the middle.
Viacom has now answered the bashing by TWC's Britt:
Time Warner Cable’s continued rhetoric and posturing is disappointing and unproductive. We have made it clear that we welcome a credible and meaningful discussion that respects our viewers and the value our programming brings to Time Warner Cable. We remain ready and willing to engage. It’s time for serious talk – before the viewers become the victims.

lSunNYl 12-31-08, 04:14 PM they take away all these channels and give us ONE HD??? SMH ... never heard of it , an dosnt even show HD .. wheres USA HD , SCI FI HD ??
TWC is going to get killed on this!!!! How is it that Dish and Direct can work things like this out?
Actually Viacom pulled it's stations from Dish a few years back during a retrans spat. As I stated, these problems lie mainly with the content provider and not the MSO. The Feds have to step in and regulate the industry by ending program tying. Simple as that. Mega media corporations should not be in a position to do these all or nothing deals. Viacom bought up 19 channels and won't sell them individually. I'd love to see how this works in area. Maybe Proctor and Gamble can start tying products together too. Say you want Tide? Ok, you have to buy a pack of Charmin, a Swiffer, a tube of Crest, and a roll of Bounty!
Granted for all my gripes with Time Warner, this is not one of them. Bring on Ala Carte programming!!!! The market will decide how much these channels are worth.
they take away all these channels and give us ONE HD??? SMH ... never heard of it , an dosnt even show HD .. wheres USA HD , SCI FI HD ??
I second that. I'm sick of seeing SciFi-HD and USA-HD added to all these other markets but mine. If they have the agreement AND we have SDV up and running, what is the hold up?!!
