View Full Version : Time Warner Cable HDTV
John Mason 09-14-09, 09:50 AM I have the Timewarner Triple Play (Turbo). I have been enjoying HD channels of Timewarner on my Sharp AQUOS 52" LCD HDTV for a while now until I went to my friends house.
They have the RCN package and I noticed the difference immediately. They have the Samsung 40" LCD HDTV. I was watching USA HD channel and I could see the difference of PQ of RCN VS Timewarner.
We are using both HDMI (same brand). Now, I am lead to believe that Timewarner does not fully stream HD channels compared to RCN. My setup on my HDTV is 1080i... and I am using SA 8300HDC (with DVR).
Is there a way for me to change any settings on my cable box so that PQ is more crisp?
Set my new plasma (Panasonic TH-65VX100U (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=16424503&highlight=th+65vx100#post16424503)) up this spring using HDMI, then experimented with a YPbPr hookup. Found component cables, with a 8300HD on NYC's TWC, provided slightly higher effective resolution using HDNet's Saturday am resolution-wedge test patterns with this technique (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=5175424#post5175424), (which several years back also showed slightly better RCN resolution compared to TWC). YPbPr was ~1424 lines versus ~1335 lines for a high-end 9' HDMI cable. Adjusting your sharpness control will boost apparent 'crispness' but it shouldn't be set high enough to create ringing (white outlines) on fine lettering etc., like the gradually smaller text on the HDNet resolution pattern; (see image with the HDNet sublink within the 'technique' link above.) -- John
Riverside_Guy 09-14-09, 10:46 AM RCN is an alternative cable/telecom provider, an "overbuilder" in cable parlance. They have a presence in NYC, Boston, D.C., and Chicago.
I'm surprised they are still in business. They had been pitching my building about 10 years ago, but called it off when they said they were doing no more wiring and would only serve buildings they were already wired into. I have not read anything about them adding any buildings since then.
So unless it's already in your building, no RCN... unless something changed since then!
bicker1 09-14-09, 12:36 PM Same story here: There are several places in town, here, where one neighbor can get RCN, while next door is not available, and it has been that way for about ten years.

dallas , los angeles, nyc most of these areas are 870MHz.
hdtvfan2005 09-16-09, 02:36 AM NYC is supposedly at 1 GHz. San Diego ex Adelphia is 870 MHz. San Diego SA is at 870 or 1GHz or even 750 MHz.
nickdawg 09-16-09, 03:56 PM Watching CNN Newsroom with Rick Sanchez right now, I notice a different background off to the side of the desk. When the camera was on Roland Martin I saw some CNN logos on glass and a more colorful background. I don't remember seeing it before so it makes me think it is something for HD. I think New York has a wall of CNN logos on their set too.
NYC is supposedly at 1 GHz.
I'm not aware of anything above 870 MHz
hdtvfan2005 09-16-09, 06:32 PM You know BBC America HD seems to be added very quickly in various TWC divisions. TWC Charlotte is getting it. However, San Diego will eventually get it on SDV.

Yes... we are getting a nice bump here next month:
October 28, 2009: The following channels will be added:
Lo Mejor On Demand - Channel 848 (Free On Demand)
HBO2 HD - Channel 312 (requires subscription to HBO)
HBO Signature HD - Channel 313 (requires subscription to HBO)
HBO Family HD - Channel 314 (requires subscription to HBO)
HBO Comedy HD - Channel 315 (requires subscription to HBO)
HBO Zone HD - Channel 316 (requires subscription to HBO)
HBO Latino HD - Channel 549 (requires subscription to HBO)
BBC America HD - Channel 219 (Digital Basic)
Fox Sports Carolinas HD - Channel 263 (Basic Cable plus HD converter)
Headline News HD - Channel 272 (Basic Cable plus HD converter)
Investigation Discovery HD - Channel 274 (Digital Basic)
MSNBC HD - Channel 273 (Basic Cable plus HD converter)
truTV HD - Channel 275 (Basic Cable plus HD converter)
TCM HD - Channel 218 (Basic Cable plus HD converter)
The HBO multicast package is very welcomed. This will bring Charlotte's Total HD Count (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=17193044#post17193044) to 79... 55 of which are "HD Basic".
We supposedly already have Fox Sports Carolinas HD, but it's been 90% SD color bars for months... maybe this means the full programming schedule is coming rather than a few cherry-picked events.

You can calibrate your TVs all the way you want, but still the picture quality will sucks. TWC compress the HD channels except the locals, Have you compare a channel like CBS HD to ESPN- HD you can see the difference because one is compressed and the other is not (CBS). RCN doesn't compress the HD channels.
Now with SDV coming maybe time warner will give every hd channel the treatment that they are suppose to get in the first place.
hdtvfan2005 09-17-09, 03:31 AM I do know that SDV will let them keep the same bit rate. Most SDV divisions still use 3:1 HD per QAM channels.

FWIW, their HD DOES seem to be very good (Being Human, Torchwood, Dr. Who). Don't think they are even stretching commercials but running them OAR.
It occurs to me that we should organize a huge letter writing campaign to anyone who advertises on the stretch-o-vision channels that we will boycott their products because they are being stretched.

Happy for ya!
hdtvfan2005 09-18-09, 03:17 AM San Diego proper got a few HD channels this week
CH. 499 - Encore HD
CH. 611 - HBO Latino E
CH. 737 - Fox News HD
CH. 748 - E! HD
CH. 778 - Fox Business HD
CH. 779 - Planet Green HD
Of course a bunch of channels will eventually be added later. I expect even more to be added by the end of this year. Maybe we'll hit the 100 HD mark sooner rather than later. Of course Ex Adelphia is now being shafted. They'll have to play the waiting game and wait for SDV and iGuide A28.
Hello all,
We don't yet have FX-HD and AMC-HD in Austin. If you have it in your area can you please reply so I can use it as fodder to get it added here?
Thanks,

NYC system has both. I believe both launched in northern Manhattan 12/08 and in Southern Manhattan on 3/09, but had been available prior in the other boroughs.

My understanding is that TWC now negotiates programming contracts at the national level. Two popular channels with Emmy award winning HD content - FX-HD and AMC-HD have been negotiated, yet are still not available in Austin. These channels have been available in Rochester NY, NYC, North Carolina and other markets for quite some time.
As we have SDV in Austin - I do not understand why these channels have not been added - nor for that matter why BBCAmerica-HD has not been added.
So - with contacts and bandwidth no longer an excuse - please add these channels!

i bet you'll get the same reply i got a few weeks back when i mailed them letting them know that i wanted bbcahd. and siteing various places that already have it. cant find the exact message but it was something like,
thanks for contacting us regarding the BBCA-HD channel. we are working hard to provide the best service and content possible to our customers. we are continually adding HD channels. please check the web site for upcoming line up changes.
a few weeks later and now i see we will be getting it in oct.

Yeah, I figure it will be something along those lines - but I am getting others from our local mailing list to do the same, and I also know that some TWC employees read our local list - though they very rarely comment anymore due to people being too obnoxious.

I was just in cincy 2 weeks ago... Evendale/Sharonville, actually, but drove through downtown and across the river in KY a little while I was there. Definitely an older more established feel... more like the northeast than down here. The rolling hills in the area are beautiful.
Been here 16 years after moving from NY/NJ Metro area. Had an 18 year career in CATV going at the time... that got derailed by a "joint venture" with our friends at TWC only a year after moving here.
Gets better AND worse here each year. Basically its good but a lot of growing pains... infrastructure hasn't kept up with growth going from 40th to 18th largest city in last 25 years or so. City is heavy on banking, so this economic "crisis" weighs heavily here.
Hate to say it, but TWC provides some decent service here, though.
DSperber 09-18-09, 08:00 PM I've been pestering my local TWC/LA programming executive contact about the absolute absence of any new HD channels here since the huge group of additions made between December 2008 and February 2009.
There's still nothing on the Programming Alerts page, but yesterday she replied in response to my complaint that TWC/Charlotte had a big set of additions arriving in the next month, and TWC/NYC already had a huge number of additions operational for a few months (implying, obviously, that TWC/national had clearly entered into HD carriage agreements with these networks). I specifically also asked about AMC-HD being available through On Demand (HD Showcase, probably) since I have been missing the entire "Mad Men" Season 3 in HD (as AMC-HD is not carried, nor is it available On Demand).
"We are planning a good number of HDs in early November. Finalizing list now. AMC will be on it. We would like to carry AMC On demand and are talking to them about it."
So, I anticipate a [hopefully] full slate of the next batch of "commonly available" HD channels already available or announced for other parts of the country, as being announced and added to the TWC/LA HD channel lineup over the next month or two.
AndyHDTV 09-18-09, 09:35 PM "We are planning a good number of HDs in early November. Finalizing list now. AMC will be on it. We would like to carry AMC On demand and are talking to them about it."
From a look at your HD lineup it looks like you guys have 54 HD channels. By comparison we here in NYC have 117. I dont see any reason why at least 100 channles should be reached before years end.
If you haven't already you should take a look at the first post in this thread to see a updated listing of channels that can be added in your division.

we all lost AMC on demand content.
DSperber 09-19-09, 04:36 AM From a look at your HD lineup it looks like you guys have 54 HD channels.Actually, I think we have 68 counting premium HD channels. I listed all of them recently, in this post on the local TWC/LA thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=17167689&postcount=6808).
By comparison we here in NYC have 117.Grrr...
I dont see any reason why at least 100 channels should be reached before years end.I'm hoping that all of the channels available elsewhere in the TWC nation will be made available with the presumably upcoming announcement of the November channel rollout.
DSperber 09-19-09, 04:39 AM we all lost AMC on demand content. As did we. I read about a failure in the negotiations between TWC/national and AMC for On Demand this season... hence a complete vanishing.

Boy do I remember a thread an exec from TWC I think actually started. It was fabulous for the first week, there was a good exchange between her and us... then the a**holes started with their typical crap and she was never seen again. We lost an ability to have a conversation with the mothership...

Hate to tell ya, but Torchwood, Being Human and Dr. Who are all fabulous, proper HD for sure. I see some of the shows I don't watch having very thin pillars, my guess because they are 1440 wide BUT they are NOT distorting anything. It appears someone in charge believes in OAR.

Yep - it was Diane. We had something similar happen in our local forum with the head of our local customer support team - and we are much worse off for it.

Diana. She used to be our Customer Rep in South Carolina. Got kicked upstairs to HQ. Connecticut I think.

Crazywoody 09-20-09, 05:30 PM What really sucks is that here in Greensboro we are getting tons of new HD which is great. However we are still stuck with the clunky Sara guide. It's still SARA one to two years after most of the rest (Triad excluded)of NC have received Navigator. My division cannot still give me a date when we will get it.All they will say aftr 6 months that it;s still being tested by employees. That really sucks.TIVO is looking better all the time. Woody

Marcus Carr 09-24-09, 11:05 AM Time Warner Cable To Announce 'Wideband' Plan For NYC
Operator to Detail First Deployment of DOCSIS 3.0 Services
by Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 9/24/2009 10:12:54 AM EDT
Time Warner Cable will announce details of its first deployment of DOCSIS 3.0 services, in New York City, at a launch event Thursday.
The services, called Time Warner Cable Wideband Internet and Business Class Wideband Internet, will be introduced at the event at Metropolitan Home's Showtime House showcase penthouse in the city's Tribeca neighborhood. The launch comes as the cable operator fights Verizon's FiOS Internet rollout in the Big Apple.

TipsyMcStagger 09-24-09, 10:32 PM Got my new TV today and the Scientific Atlanta 8300HD box. The TV is awesome and the HD channels are great but every few minutes the picture pauses or pixelates. If it happens long enough the Dolby signal will drop from the display on the receiver.
Is this a problem with the signal or is the 8300HD box defective?
Also, is there a HBO-HD On-Demand channel?
TIA.

I have an 8300HD and have had that problem many of times before. It's probably more in the signal than it is with your specific box.
DSperber 09-24-09, 11:31 PM Also, is there a HBO-HD On-Demand channel? There is (theoretically), but it's not available through TWC... at least not yet.
According to this item from a few months back (http://www.tvpredictions.com/comcast072409.htm), Comcast is now the first provider to offer HBO HD On Demand.
Perhaps TWC may get it eventually as well.

As was replied above, this is probably more from the content itself (or recompression by TWC) rather than coming from something flawed in the SA8300 box.

Time Warner in our division is running ads touting Start Over HD and On Demand HD but they don't exist here. They did the same thing with Navigator when they launched a totally redesigned website with all these great new features that we didn't have. I called excitedly to ask when they were going to deploy Navigator and within a few days all traces were removed from the website.

My city is NY (Manhattan).
I've only had the TV (Sony KDL-52Z5100) and SA 8300HD box for less than a day so I can't say for sure how many channels are affected but it happened while watching at least two or three HD movies on seperate channels.

DSperber 09-25-09, 10:25 AM I can't say for sure how many channels are affected but it happened while watching at least two or three HD movies on seperate channels. What channels? Premium commercial-free channels (e.g. HBOHD, SHOHD, MAXHD, etc.)? Low-end cable channels, known to not care much about HD quality (e.g. TNTHD, TBSHD, UHD, AMCHD, MGMHD, etc.)?
Welcome to the HD club with your new TV, but one quickly learns that not all so-called HD is the same. This is not a defense of TWC, but more of a condemnation of low-end networks oblivious to something called "quality" and OAR.

Like I said...I've only had the set and service for less than 24 hours but the problem has been annoying enough in that short time that I'm seeking information.
They were all premium commercial free movie channels (HBO, Starz, Cinemax, etc).

In the NYC thread, we have had similar reports from different boxes (HDCs) and I can say it has happened with both Passport and MDN software. As for channels, most complaints seem to be around the local FOX channel. I have noticed a concentration around 3 channels that happen to be on the same QAM channel. Those three channels have also multiple times gone to gray screens for 10 minutes to an hour.
It also has been notice by more than one person that recently, the issue seems to be happened on channels that never had the issue before, I have the same experience.
All this certainly seems to point to issues at the various head ends... unfortunately many who report never list box, software and which head end they are from, but by location it can be inferred it's not all in one head end... that it may be moire system wide.

No thanks, at ~$100 for 50/5 Mbps (more than double the cost of my current NYC TWC Road Runner service). Might consider it if they'd splice in some super-HD services such as MPEG4 24p movies; 1080i with greatly boosted effective resolution; 1080p60@3Gbps (double standard HD's rate), compressed of course, via MPEG4; 3D video (live/recorded)...even if a 2nd 3D-capable display was required. -- John
EDIT: Make that 48-fps MPEG4 movies as well as true-24p ones. :-)

Yeah. And sometime in the last month we got four Big Ten Network channels to go along with the regular Big Ten Network channel we got several months ago. Big Ten sports--talk about a waste of bandwidth for most of us living out here in the middle of the California desert.
gail2magic 09-26-09, 03:37 PM Anyone have any idea if Time Warner is planning on adding ABC and Fox shows to their on demand channels?
One of my favorite TW features is that I can watch CBS, NBC, USA, SyFy, FX's shows on demand. They do not carry all their programs but do have the most popular ones.
If they presently carry any of the ABC or Fox ones, I have not found which on demand channels has them.
Thanks
Gail in SC
hdtvfan2005 09-26-09, 11:28 PM It would be on PrimeTime OD. TWC has yet to add Fox and ABC VoD. If it does come out Primetime OD and HD Showcase OD would be the place for it.
gail2magic 09-27-09, 10:10 AM Thanks, hopefully they will add it soon. I was not sure if some markets already had this.
HDtvaDict 09-27-09, 12:31 PM For TWC Southwest Division they will be adding the following HD Channels in November:
MSNBC HD
Headline News HD
E! HD
Versus HD
Speed HD
Disney XD HD
Biography HD
Travel Channel HD
Weather HD
AMC HD
Still not the channels I would like (BBC America HD) but hey the more HD we get the merrier! So by years end we will have roughly 53 HD channels not including the Premium HD channels you have to pay extra for like Smithsonian or MAV HD.

I also like this feature; in addition to more networks, it would be even better if this free on-demand channel was available in HD. On my system (TWC Austin) the primetime-on-demand channel is SD only.
hdtvfan2005 09-27-09, 10:19 PM The HD primetime content would be in HD Showcase OD.

It seems to me that everyone who quotes the "number of HD" in each market DO include all "pay-extra" channels. In general, they also seem to include any VOD or PPV HD channels as single channels... while some MSOs are known to add in 30+ HD channels for one HD VOD service!
DSperber 09-28-09, 10:22 AM I still would like to see TWC San Diego add MSNBC HD and BBCA HD.Looks like we're getting closer...

KMEX HD (Univision)
KFTR HD (Telefutura)
AMC HD
WE HD
Fuse HD

HSN HD
CBS College Sports HD
G4 HD
HLN HD (Headline News)
History International HD
NBA TV
Outdoor Channel HD
QVC HD
TCM HD
TV One HD
WGN America HD
Investigation Discovery HD
Still nothing on the Programming Alerts page, but it definitely looks like the wheels are in motion. I still think it's planned for November.
hdtvfan2005 09-28-09, 01:35 PM Yes and a good majority if not all of them will be SDV. TWC LA is hoping to install a BigBand SDV system which means Tuning resolvers will be offered for those Tivo, Moxi, and UDCP PC owners.

They are available/carried whether paid for or not.
While some areas still need to get busy, it seems we might want to gradually turn attention/ire to stretch-o-vision channels. Seems to me, they do that because they think customers want it. While it DOES seem some do want that, I think they are quite the minority.

Here it sure seems that way.
But of course we don't represent the average HDTV viewer.
And I'm sure almost all of us have experienced friends/family that would rather have the screen filled.
When Big Ten teams are playing simultaneously, the channels show different games.

what am I missing....Each region is basically independent (their own Presidents) and can decide locally what to show. I suspect that was originally set-up to manage the company better (too big to do nationwide all together). Also, each region is of different age and infrastructure so variable capabilities. Also allows each region to do channels that are more needed in that area. There is pricing differences and the way channels are lined up differently too. /Dan

Not only that,
But there are local contractual agreements that vary from cable market to cable market within the same company, which may explain why you may have some channels and not others. Channels do not just magically appear on ANY cable system. The age of the equipment, the bandwidth capacity for the head-end, the number of nodes within a municipality, licensing agreements and system age, ALL play a factor in not only what channels you get, but a lot of times where channels are placed and how packages are organized.
Generally, the most requested channels on a national scale are considered first when space is available for them. But they also have to take into consideration Standard Service, which is generally channels 2-99. These stations are harder to move around because their are local networks and standard cable operators that may even PAY higher residuals to have their station appear earlier than later in a basic or standard required package.
Note that Digital Services are more national based with some Ala-Carte options for customers, giving the cable company greater flexibility where to put channels. This is one reason why it is easier to add channels to digital tiers than standard tiers and why you will often see very little changes in basic/standard (non-digital) lineups in the future.

Downstate still holds the record, we got 60-70 or so on one day; actually, more accurately that was one head end in the city, all the other boroughs got new channels in 2-6 bunches over about a year and then Manhattan got a HUGE group... and even then, northern Manhattan got them in 12/08, while southern Manhattan and to wait 4 months... no matter, happy you are getting more!

That is true of about 75% of the channels. Very few offer a lot in the way of entertainment. I want the network broadcast channels, a couple of sports channels and the news channels. Toss in a couple of others and I'm satisfied.
It seems kind of foolish to be excited about the addition of channels that you will skip right past once they are there.

Number_6 10-11-09, 10:32 PM No freeview? I am now watching HULK. :) Maybe a glitch?
Every once in a while, glitches happen. About ten years ago I was watching something on (what used to be) the Sci-Fi channel, which suddenly became a porn channel for about 20 minutes. Fired up the VCR for that one.
hyedipin 10-11-09, 11:41 PM Well, I have to live with Hulk and a glimps of Liv Tyler's sexy legs, that's about all.. :) Nothing much else.. Did you just swap a box? Long ago I got 2 weeks of absolutely everything wide open, all premiums, all porn (which are all softcore), even all PPV things. Last box swap I got some things I wasnt paying for, but a few things I SHOULD be getting wewre blocked. lasted 2-3 days then back to only what my account was supposed to have.
hyedipin 10-12-09, 09:46 AM Hi Riverside Guy,
Yes, I just swapped my SA box for SMT yesterday. I lost a good amount of recorded stuff, but this free HBO thing totally makes up for my lost DVR recordings! :) I did not turn off the cable box last night (Chandler+Joey) and this morning when I woke up I checked 201 and there it was, HBO. :) Let's see how long this will last. Your 2 week period sounds like a lucky one, most likely TWC is sweeping all boxes every few days to every week, refreshing programming, etc.. You got a lucky break of not getting refreshed for 2 weeks. Will report when my HBO's are gone... I got no PPV/OND/Playboy..

You got a lucky break of not getting refreshed for 2 weeks. Will report when my HBO's are gone... I got no PPV/OND/Playboy..
o... you didn't mention that it was a new box...
That can go either way. Sometimes channels are there that shouldn't be - sometimes channels are missing that shouldn't be....

Too bad TWC won't let us have HBO HD OnDemand!
I suspect it's all about a signal sent to "lock in" your specific account... once that is done, you'll only get what you are overpaying for. Enjoy it while it lasts...

TravKoolBreeze 10-14-09, 12:52 PM That is true of about 75% of the channels. Very few offer a lot in the way of entertainment. I want the network broadcast channels, a couple of sports channels and the news channels. Toss in a couple of others and I'm satisfied.
It seems kind of foolish to be excited about the addition of channels that you will skip right past once they are there.
For me it's the princple of the fact. Just give me the channels I pay for and I'll decide to watch or not. This is why I'm still mad over BigTenHDoD still showing call cust serv to subcribe for the past two months yet I get all the other channels in that tier.
Plus, you never know if you like something as you flip thur channels.

Yeah, I know. Once in a great, great while, I stumble onto something on a channel I never watch, but it is so accidental, it just doesn't seem that the channel has any significance to me whatsoever.
Recently, it was necessary to take a digital box from TWC because the cablecard was not going to work with SDV. Suddenly, I had all of those free digital channels and it was fun to explore them. ............ That fun lasted for a couple of hours, then I realized I was going to have to force myself to go back and check those channels once in a while because I was just not going to come across them in the normal course of events.
It was always a kick when the cable company added a channel or two, but they now have hundreds and it's easy to feel that television has lost something as a direct result. So many choices and so few that arouse interest.
The talk about tv among the people that I see most days is always about a network show, the news talkers, our Boston sports teams' games or something else from the primary channels. It makes me wonder how the other channels have enough viewers to survive. I'm sure that there are always a certain number of people out there, but economic survival must be a challenge.
The other day, I noticed that the digital homosexual channel had a sign up that said something like, "We're gone for now, but we'll be back after the parade." Now, that is what you call 'operating on a shoestring'. Nobody to run the station when the operator wants to be somewhere else for a little while. Most of the digital channels create the same general impression. I suppose that time will sort it all out.

It's not a challenge at all.
I doubt there are many independent cable channels out there. Many are owned by an entertainment consortium, such as Rainbow Media, Turner Networks, Viacom, NBC Universal Media, etc... The task is simple. All you need is one or two hit stations that cable viewers cannot live without. Then, you force cable operators to carry all the excess baggage in order to carry the hit channel.
For example, you want to carry the SyFy Channel... well, the owner of SyFy also owns USA, Oxygen, Bravo, MSNBC, CNBC, mun2, to name a few. If you want SyFy, you'll have to take these other channels, along with their children. And by the way, we want 50 cents per channel... So you end up having to buy 12 channels for 1 channel that you do want, and the content provider gets paid regardless if people watch it or not.
When digital cable came to be, it became a vehicle by which the content generators can create new channels and force them down the throats of the content providers, thereby raising their revenue stream (and your cable bill)
It has nothing to do with having viewers... it all has to do with how the channel is packaged by its owner.
You provide media jobs by being forced to subscribe to things you don't want.
Cheers!
-Doug
anyone else have their box get hosed by the latest update? I went in to the local TWC store today and they said they're aware of the issue, but say to just keep the box plugged in. Apparently it's only the 4250 boxes. They end up saying OCAP, and upon reboot scroll through tons of r### numerics.
gerhard911 10-14-09, 03:50 PM I don't know if my box is "hosed" or not but I am really frickin sick of TW constantly rebooting my 4250. Probably once every three days on average over the last three weeks.
I record with a PC connected to the cable box and have missed a ton of recordings. Anyone know WTF they are doing (it certainly appears that TWC doesn't) ?

hdtvfan2005 10-14-09, 05:58 PM I've been having SDV issues now. The channels are now pixellating. Only the HD ones are tiling. It's like watching a bad OTA signal. Only the SDV HD channels are affected by this.

Where are you located? We have had that problem here in Raleigh for quite some time. If you check diags for RS Uncorrected... does it remain zero after a pixelation burst?
hdtvfan2005 10-14-09, 07:33 PM Not sure since they fixed it today.
yeah, the constant updates/reboots hosed my recordings until I set up the 4250 to turn on when a channel is changed (works since I use a USB-UIRT channel changer). But the new Samsung box doesn't work that way. I have it set to auto-turn on at a set time each day just in case.
My 4250 is working okay now.

On or abut October 25, 2009 we will launch the simulcast, NBA TV HD on ch. 461. This service will be part of our Sports Tier and NBA League Pass offerings.
For the most part, television programming does not display high definition at its best. HDTV looks its very best during commercials. Every hair and blade of grass appears in the finest of detail. The actual programs almost look to to be slightly smoothed over. I imagine the technical people feel this is for the best, but I certainly do not share that feeling.

skoretsk 10-20-09, 10:32 AM Does anyone know if there's a promotional code for NBA League Pass signup through this webpage? http://www.nba.com/leaguepass/signup.jsp
Why does Direct TV broadcast many games on NBA League pass in HD while Time Warner Cable (San Diego) does not broadcast in HD, only SD? Makes me want to change
skoretsk 10-21-09, 05:26 PM We have the same problem here in Raleigh/Durham with TWC, really stinks!
Tom Wellman 10-21-09, 07:53 PM Why does Direct TV broadcast many games on NBA League pass in HD while Time Warner Cable (San Diego) does not broadcast in HD, only SD? Makes me want to change
It probably has to do with the distributor, inDemand Networks (which is a jointly owned venture by the cable companies) . They only have 1 HD channel for MLB Extra Innings/NHL Center Ice games (GAME HD), and 1 HD channel for NBA League Pass/MLS Direct Kick, and the 2 hd channels are available only in select markets (all depending on the cable operator on when to add those 2 HD channels). What inDemand needs to do is somehow provide HD feeds of all those games. The reason why DirecTV is able to show all those out of market games in HD, is because they have just about every most major regional sports network, and they just use the feed on the on the regional sports network. In addition a block of channels reserved for each sports league on DirecTV (usually used for games only to be shown on over-the-air stations or cable only stations, like CSN Philadelphia, or COX 4 San Diego). But for the most part, let's say for example, I have DirecTV and subscribe to NBA League Pass. Now living in the San Diego area as I do, if I don't subscribe to NBA LP (on DirecTV), and try to watch the Nuggets on Altitude HD on DirecTV ch. 681 or 682-1, I'd get blacked out from watching the Nuggets (since I'm in the Clippers television territory on an NBA LP channel). Now If I tune into Altitude HD via DirecTV, ch. 681/682-1, subscribed to NBA LP, I could watch the Nuggets on tv without any restriction. It's just that DirecTV has a majority of the regional sports networks in HD, thus more out-of-market games in HD.
hdtvfan2005 10-22-09, 04:54 AM I think San Diego will get more HD channels once they get ex Adelphia upgraded to SDV. They must be beta testing the Moto TA's for the UDCP owners. Non TA compatible CableCard devices are SOL. CableCard TV's can use an ancient crippled HD cable box.
hdtvfan2005 10-22-09, 04:56 AM Now if we (being TWC San Diego) could (finally!) get the ESPNU-HD channel....
I still want more HD for San Diego. They always seem to pick the wrong channels. San Diego is a fairly big market and they deserve lots of HD. Even Cox has more HD than TWC. Maybe later this year or there's always next year.

No.. they don't...
Time Warner and Time Warner Cable are 2 completely separate entities.
But the fact that a region is getting an HD (premium) movie on demand channel is a great sign.

NBA TV is supposed to move off the sports tier.... sometime soon...
DSperber 10-28-09, 05:27 AM http://www.nba.com/2009/news/10/22/nbatv.release/index.html
NBA TV is supposed to move off the sports tier.... sometime soon...Well, if this is handled anything like the way MLB was implemented by TWC/LA (where they do not have a "Digital Basic" offering that does not cost extra but is just a basic level of service that is the minimum you can pay and get so-called digital channels), we'll get screwed again out here.
MLB's arrangement with the providers was to make it available "AT NO CHARGE, AS LONG AS YOU HAD DIGITAL BASIC". Well, since TWC/LA has no such thing as "digital basic", they decided to stash MLB in the Variety Tier ($5/month) which 85% of LA subscribers pay for. If you were in that 85% you got it "for free". If you didn't (like me), you had to add Variety Tier for $5/month to get MLB.
This wasn't what MLB really wanted, but apparently TWC/LA convinced them that it was "close enough" (i.e. reaching 85% of LA at no additional charge, over and above what those subscribers were already paying).
So, my guess is that if/when NBA moves out of where it is right now in TWC/LA, in Sports Tier (yes, another $5/month), that it will have no place to go "for free" other than the same Variety Tier (for $5/month, but which 85% of LA already pays for) that got MLB.
Personally, I'd like to see Tennis Channel available for free (it's not... it's in Sports Tier). Don't know why Golf Channel is truly available for no charge (i.e. it is in "Basic Cable", which for some crazy reason is not considered "Digital Basic" by TWC/LA even though it actually is the lowest-level digital service) but MLB and NBA and Tennis and NHL are priced.
Note: TWC/LA considers "digital basic" to be "basic cable" plus one of the $5/month optional tiers. That's how they conned MLB into accepting this Variety Tier crap, even though MLB wanted to reach 90 million "digital basic" people at ZERO additional charge. 85% of LA who'd already chosen Variety Tier was "close enough".
Considering that Time Warner is part owner in MLB Network, I don't think there was any con game going on.

TWC doesn't have any ownership in any national networks (just a few local cable ones) - although this depends on how you define SNY.
MLB Network launched before the split though.

Whether it's MLB, NBA or NFL, if it's only a few games over an entire year, it's a huge waste of bandwidth.
Recently, I had to leave my cablecard and move to the TWC converter box (Motorola). While surfing up and down the channels, the unsubscribed premium channels show up and I would like to skip them. Is the only way to do that through the parental lock feature?
gerhard911 10-28-09, 02:50 PM I have an SA4250 box and tried the parental lock to skip channels. It doesn't skip but puts up a "channel blocked" screen

HDtvaDict 10-28-09, 05:55 PM I second that. I wish there was a way to just skip completely over them when flipping through so you don't have to worry about that dreaded "Call TWC 1-800#s"...some one please tells us a fix? Or we may have to ask TWC for a software fix I'm sure it's easy to do right?

Good point on NBA and to a large extent, MLB. I wasn't aware of that. NFLHD is still an issue with me, however.
We had NFLHD at our daughter's house this summer. It is a complete waste of time. It is a bunch of ex players types telling me what they think. UGH! Of course they do show some (8 games a year) football but the whole NFL model means it does not matter what they show. On a weekend with no byes the NFL has 16 games to show. At best most of us will see 5 of them. The other 11 are not available for us to see. The people who want to see all those games have already left cable and gone to a dish. There may be a few around who can't have a dish but that does not mean a cable co should put the NFLHD on everybody. I rarely agree with TWC but in this case I do.
bob2274 10-29-09, 09:18 PM The only thing that NFL Network has going for it now, besides the live games, is the ability of cable companies to sell the Red Zone channel. Unfortunately, all the RZ channel shows are live look ins that the NHL, MLB, and NBA already include on their main channels.
Other than the live games, I agree that the programming on NFL Network is garbage.

The whole sport of professional football has become so lackluster, boring, routine and uninteresting that I no longer care--or bother to watch.

The Padres aside (sorry for your geographical sports location though San Diego continues to be a GREAT place sports aside!), I think that the MLB Network does a commendable job. Varied programming. Interesting and informed hosts. Great insight into the sport (and MLB is a very good sport--as opposed to the NFL).
However, the first couple of weeks last January were AWFUL. NY Yankees this and NY Yankees that. Who cares what goes on east of the Hudson River? Not me--and I'm not alone. However, after the first month (and, I'm sure, some hot negative feedback) the MLB folk finally decided to cover BASEBALL and that include all 30 teams--even the KC Royals. MLB made a mistake in putting the MLB Network studio in NJ. Ouch. Should have been in the mid-west.
So, given everything and as a baseball-only network, the MLB Network is pretty good if you like/love/understand the sport.
Pretty darned good ('til they become the YES Network wannabee once again).

About the best you can do is not program them as favorites and then use the FAV button in place of the CH UP function.

As for Yankees this and Yankees that in January - who's still playing ball in October/November - right, those DAMN Yankees, so someone in that organization got it right! :D
As for being in Jersey, MLB bought the the old MSNBC broadcast facility in Secaucus and reconfigured it for their needs - which was probably cheaper than building from scratch.
Tom Wellman 10-30-09, 07:46 PM I for one like MLB Network. In fact, that is pretty much the only network I watch for baseball highlights as opposed to ESPN. With MLB network, they show just about every important highlight from every game, and not just the ones involving teams east of the Hudson River. Plus MLB Network shows a lot of games during the season (and its not always the Red Sox/Yankees/Mets, so in my opinion MLB Network is a plus for me. NBA TV isn't a waste of bandwith either. NBA TV show lots of games throughout the season, usually on Mondays, Tuesdays, Saturdays, Sundays. I don't know enough about NHL Network to make an opionion of it. But NBA TV and MLB Network have much more live sporting events on their networks than NFL Network's 8 games a season.

Funny, we're all pretty much in agreement as to the value of the NFL HD channel. It wasn't this way a year or two ago when a number of people thought they might actually miss a couple more tv football games. ............ I feel like I'm seeing all I can handle, now.

I agree about the MLB Network. Like I posted above, it has gotten much better after the first month mimicking YES. I'm a big fan...and I've probably sold more people on watching it than I care to think about.
Location of studios: I've been by the building in NJ & realize that it was MSNBC at one time. I still think it would have been better (and probably cheaper) to have established the Network in, say, St. Louis or Cleveland or even Chicago instead. These are good baseball areas. Makes more sense to me rather than being in the nyc orbit.

As noted, now with RedZone, the value of NFL Network has increased dramatically.
You haven't seen RedZone yet, have you? All I can say is until you've seen it, reserve your judgment.
Even if the 8 regular season games and RedZone were all they had to offer, I believe most NFL fans feel they are a necessity.
Having said that, I find myself watching some of the other programming, in particular I like NFL Replay:
Mondays at 7:00 PM ET
Tuesdays & Wednesdays at 8:00 & 10:30 PM ET
NFL game broadcasts from the previous weekend, complete with original television announcers and cameras are re-televised on NFL Network just days after their live airing.
During the 2007 season, NFL Replay features five of the most exciting games from the weekend, airing exclusively on NFL Network Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.
The first NFL Replay game each week airs on Monday at 7:00 PM ET followed by two contests shown each Tuesday and Wednesday night with 8:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. ET kickoff times.
NFL Replay games air in a 90-minute fast-paced format, without halftime and other elements not critical to the outcome.
In order to give the games context, NFL Network adds sideline and on-field sound captured during the game and post-game press conference sound bites.
Other enhancements include exclusive shots and camera angles from NFL Films, allowing fans an inside look at game action they did not see on Sunday. This gives fans a deeper understanding of the game, the players and the coaches.
For example, if NFL Replay was featuring the Cowboys-Seahawks NFC Wild Card game where Tony Romo fumbled the field goal snap late in the game, viewers would see related comments from Romo, coach Bill Parcells and others immediately after the play, as well as slow-motion footage showing the play as it unfolded.
NFL Network has the ability to select any NFL game for use on NFL Replay.

Um...
I'm sure most of the people on the network itself (like.. Bob Costas) are much happier that the studios are in the NYC area.
It really shouldn't matter where the studios are from a viewer perspective - you are making something out of nothing.

Wrong. Sorry.
Actually, I'm making something out of something.
The farther from NYC an entity is, the less likely a bias. ESPN has taken heat for many number of years for its NE-centric reporting and silly biases. Now that they run a SportsCenter from Los Angeles, much of that crap has abated.
Thankfully.
Oh, BTW, last I heard, Bob Costas lives in the St. Louis area.

just because TBS hd was on 2 channels doesn't mean it was taking up twice the bandwidth.
They can assign one channel to as many virtual channels as they want to.
For a while we in NYC had the main primary movie networks assigned to 2 channels each (when they were adding the additional HD movie channels) - but they never took up twice the bandwidth - they were still only being sent out once.
In SC (Time Warner) we got the UM/ILL game in HD on ESPN2 and the Miami game was on ABC in HD. At night the USC/Ducks game was only on SD ESPN2 and the Texas game was on ABC in HD. Anyone know why? ESPN2HD was blocked with ESPN News.

I recall getting upset, but learned (and have seen) that at least your local team wouldn't get blacked out, so one can always watch their local team (mostly, we have 2 of' em and this year twice already they pit them against each other... although with how they played yesterday, both were a total waste!).

I'm sure its gotta blow living in New York City with regards to watching NFL football. If I'm not mistaken, if 1 New York team is playing a early game (eg:Jets), with the other New York team playing a late game (eg: Giants), that would mean you'd only get 2 games normally whenever WNYW and WCBS are televising games from their respective networks. The same goes for the San Francisco Bay Area with regards to the 49ers and Raiders (although lately, no one has been going to Raider games, so for their sake in the Bay Area, the Raiders have been getting blacked out, so they've been getting better games on local tv there). Obviously if you're a fan of those teams it doesn't really matter. I'm sure it would it would bug people who are fans of other teams, (which was the point that I was getting at).

That's not exactly it.
The rule is no game can air opposite a local market team home game.
So - If the network with the doubleheader has a NY team with a home game - then NYC will get 3 games. If the singleheader network has the NY home game - then there are only 2 games that day for that market (this goes for every NFL city - it just comes up more often in NY and the Bay Area since they have 2 teams)
This rule can be waived by the NFL when special circumstances forces them (such as Week 1 when CBS only has 1pm games due to the US Open Finals - cities with a home game on FOX at 1pm still get a 1pm CBS game since everyone is guaranteed 1 game on each network)
They have waived this rule twice this year for NYC - back in September when they moved the Jets home game to 1pm due to Yom Kippur starting that night (and with a Jets home game the previous week on Rosh Hashonah - many local ticket holders were losing out on the first 2 game of the season) - and now this week the Giants/Eagles were moved to 1pm at the same time as the Jets home game due to the security and parking logistic problems in Philly created by the World Series.

I can only say that this is a MASSIVE change then when I lived in NJ(1975-1995).
The NY Jets and NY Giants, back then, and I think the same is true now, NEVER play at the same time(both don't have 1pm or 4pm starts, ever), whether they are home or not.
So if the Giants and jets both play on Sunday, and neither one is playing in primetime, one of them will start at 1pm and the other will start 4pm. Always.
And the kicker is, since they are both HOME in the NYC market, there is no game opposite the game currently on, so you get just one. And boy, did that SUCK during the 80's-90's when the Jets were just G*d awful(still are IMHO. I am a closet Giant fan having grown up in NJ, but the Steelers are still #1).
Now unless that has changed(the team playing at the Meadowlands is considered home, and therefore the team on the road has a game opposite them).
Here in Western PA, that is not the case. When the Steelers are on, they are the only show in town. Then there are usually 2 games playing opposite each other at 1pm or 4pm, depending on when the Steeler game is(and if they are in primetime, we would get 3-4 games between FOX and CBS).

They (almost) never play at the same time thanks to the rule. They have made 2 exceptions this season.
(Technically, if both are on the road they could be at the same time - NFL TV preference is to avoid it though)

No fooling... far as I know, the Jewish high holidays always fall in the fall during football season, but were never used as an excuse. AND they could have run the Jets game at 4:15 this past weekend, I'd bet you 95% of the Jets fans would rather see them at that time than watch Favre in Green Bay and miss the Jets game.

More often then not the High Holidays fall out in the middle of the week.
And this was an issue of poor planning where the first 2 home games were back to back and on those days. It doesn't happen often. AND it also included a Jets home game at 4pm for the 2nd game - which also doesn't happen alot.
And as for moving the Jets this past Sunday - that was CBS's decision (and would've affected a large chunk of the national schedule - not just NYC - and also would've meant that the GB-Min game would have not been on in NYC) - and I'm not sure what you are talking about missing the Jets game

Giants / Eagles was originally supposed to be the 'National Game' on Fox at 4:15. The network used the World Series as an excuse to move Packers / Vikings to 4:15 and show that to the nation instead.
There is PLENTY of parking down by the Sports Complex. It was a lame excuse to boost ratings to make a buck. Don't let anyone tell you different.
Cheers!

I should have said they HAVE fallen on weekends with games being moved. I meant Giants HAD to be moved back to 1, but they COUILD have moved the Jets to 4... at least in their home market. I dare say the vast majority of local Jets fans would prefer to watch their them play than GB-Min. SURE DVR folks got to see both home teams, but again, not both home teams AND GB-Min... remember, there was a Yankee game on that night!

Back then, Sunday Night Football didn't exist, so there wasn't a prime time to play in. Besides, the NY teams rarely made Monday Night Football, so it was always NY Teams at 1 and 4, and no good second game. Things have changed, and we in NY are now more likely to get the second out-of-market game.
To this day, people don't understand how bad it was. I vividly remember watching football at 1, and the announcer would EXPLICITLY say that everyone will be seeing Oakland / Denver, except those in New York, because we HAD to had the Giants on CBS at 4.

Moving the Jets to 4 pm does not change a thing. If they moved the Jets to 4pm, the Giants would still be playing at 4pm down in Philly, and there would still be traffic issues (allegedly)...
If they moved the Giants to 1 pm, and the Jets to 4 pm, then yes, GB-MIN would be N/A in NYC, and only because the Jets would be playing at home. Not sure what other markets would have been affected by the change. There are some markets that get the junk (non DH network) 4pm games because of the 1 pm games being shown.

Gooddog 11-05-09, 04:50 PM TWC plans to eliminate STBs, step up Promotions on Demand

Time Warner Cable reported an increase in revenue, said it has a long-term plan to eliminate set-top boxes in favor of gateway-like devices, and is on the verge of a wider rollout of its Promotions on Demand interactive advertising feature. The company also reiterated its support for Canoe Ventures.
Time Warner Cable reported a 4 percent increase in revenue to $4.5 billion, compared with its third quarter a year ago. The company lost basic subscribers but migrated more of its remaining customers into bundles, leading to overall RGU (revenue-generating unit) growth.
Net income was down to $268 million from $301 million a year ago, largely a result of the special dividend that former parent Time Warner Inc. forced TWC to pay to finance its own spin-off.
Capital spending is down from a year ago, the company reported. For the first nine months of 2009, total capex totaled $2.3 billion, an 11 percent decrease compared with the first nine months of 2008. It is now 17 percent of revenue, down from 20 percent in ’08.

hdtvfan2005 11-06-09, 03:47 AM Probably not as TWC seems to be in protest with Viacom. There are a few anti viacom people who like the idea of TWC not adding it. I too would like to have Comedy Central HD but no. If it does happen it would likely be next year.

Just out of curiosity which tier are they going to move NBA TV in your area? There's no such thing as "basic" tier, in the wonderful world that is Time Warner Cable. I remember with MLB Network in the Time Warner Southern California region, through other posters on this site, they put MLB Network in the "Variety" tier. Although where I live in, in North San Diego County, MLB Network is available in both the "Sports Package" tier and "Variety Package" tier. Although oddly enough, and I'm not complaining, we don't subscribe to either of those tiers and still get MLB Network. It seems like the leagues have screwed itself in defining on what a basic tier is with Time Warner Cable.

In NYC is DTValue (same as MLB Network and many other channels) - its the basic digital tier (even though we don't have analog service beyond the most basic channels - they still package the channels as if they still do - there is basic, standard, then DTValue)

Riverside_Guy 11-07-09, 09:06 AM Seems to me NYC also has it's share of confusing packages. We have an HDXtra tier which includes some or maybe all of the channels from the Sports Tier. Not to mention that it doesn't seem to be documented anywhere "officially."
humdinger70 11-07-09, 11:01 AM Just out of curiosity which tier are they going to move NBA TV in your area? There's no such thing as "basic" tier, in the wonderful world that is Time Warner Cable. I remember with MLB Network in the Time Warner Southern California region, through other posters on this site, they put MLB Network in the "Variety" tier. Although where I live in, in North San Diego County, MLB Network is available in both the "Sports Package" tier and "Variety Package" tier. Although oddly enough, and I'm not complaining, we don't subscribe to either of those tiers and still get MLB Network. It seems like the leagues have screwed itself in defining on what a basic tier is with Time Warner Cable.
The weird thing is that TWC San Diego (non Adelphia) HAD NBA TV in HD (channel 713). Went away about a year ago.
We still have the regular channel (413). Channel 713 mostly had a static message screen about "tune into this channel when we have programming on that channel". No clue these people.

We were supposed to get NBATVHD in NYC about a year ago and didn't - it was just recently added for the first time.
You probably lost it for the same reason we never got it in the first place - and hopefully should see it added again soon.

Well, it was originally only supposed to be available in our market to those who paid extra for the Sports or the HDXtra tiers... now it's supposed to be available to all.
Frankly, I'd rather they put it back on those tiers and give us Smithsonian... but that won't happen!
Does anyone know if Time Warner Cable has rolled out DOCSIS 3.0 in its Los Angeles-served market yet? Thanks!
Well, as far as I could glean from a quick Google search, DOCSIS 3.0 roll-outs have been suspended (is this still accurate?), somewhat due to customer backlash from a threatened, tiered-pricing structure for the higher-speed internet service. None of the four test markets planned (San Antonio, TX; Austin, TX; Greensboro, NC; and Rochester, NY) included Los Angeles. Near-future plans for a DOCSIS 3.0 roll-out in TimeWarner's system is unknown.

no they have not they are now deploying it in NYC, soon in buffalo, syracuse.
I have heard that DFW is getting it next year. So LA should get it next year.

Think I read the same thing about them "going to" roll it out here. BUT the only point would be to offer a much higher speed tier, like 100 bucks for 50 Mb/s. STILL can't get close to competing with FiOS, but they also probably know the actual FiOS rollout (here) has virtually been stopped.
Was going to ask how one might be able to tell, figured it had to be by querying the modem. Here it gets interesting... I had a web address I somehow got years and years ago. BUT about a year ago I HAD upgraded to a combo modem that does telephjone as well as IP. So i gave oit a shot... whatddya know, it WORKED!

I have NO idea if that works anywhere else, but ya got nothing to lose. Bottom line is it seems to be still DOCSIS 1.x:
Downstream
Freq/Power: 687.000 MHz -7 dBmV
Signal to Noise Ratio: 33 dB
Modulation: QAM256
Upstream
Freq/Power: 33.000 MHz 43 dBmV
Channel Type: DOCSIS 1.x (TDMA)
Symbol Rate: 2560 kSym/sec
Modulation: QAM16
Including that http address sent off a phishing alert in my email program.

It shouldn't. That is just an internal IP that goes to your cable modem. Must be some security software you have installed that is overreacting.
Actually my ISP, Earthlink marked it as phishing and Windows Live Mail would not allow clicking on any link in it.

That works on the Moto modem I have at home and the Ambit modem I have at work. The Ambit requires a password to access diagnostics (easily found online), but the Moto does not. The Moto can also be rebooted from its menus, as well as release/renew its IP address from the headend.

1) DOCSIS 3.0 has launched in NYC - just not in our area yet. It's being rolled out - just like every other service - but we're supposed to see it by year-end. I know they are close - they have recently did some minor QAM shifting and now have 2 groups of 4 channels not being used by analog or digital cable.
http://www.timewarnercable.com/nynj/learn/hso/wideband-internet/default.html
2) It's been made clear from the start that full NYC service by FiOS was going to take a number of years.

Ooops, you remind me I forgot to indicate what I have... it's a:
ARRIS DOCSIS 1.1 / PacketCable 1.0 Touchstone Telephony Modem HW_REV: 32
VENDOR: Arris Interactive, L.L.C.
BOOTR: 5.01
SW_REV: 5.3.19.D11PLUS

Interesting the same IP is used for veery different modems... not to mention different capabilities. It appears it only gives information and doesn't provide any interactivity... as in there's no provision via any via button or link.

Ah, thanks for the link. I HAD read about 50 Mb/s, but up speed (as I recall) was something like 2-3 Mb/s. AND that it wold cost 100 bucks, more than double current standard service. FiOS standard seems to be 25/15.
Verizon's commitment, including 3 pre-scheduled delays, is to wire the city by 2017. Which is not to say they can't ask for further delays. BUT they also listed a few neighborhoods and said they'd have 60% of Manhattan wired by the end of the year. They also told us they'd have us wired by August (we had business discussions with them about serving as a central hub location, theysaid "not at this time"). However, they said it was available in the East Village at contract signing and it simply isn't. I really don't have any facts, but anecdotally it seems less than 20% have it available. Nobody that I personally know have it available. Not to mention that it also seems to ONLY be available in a few large buildings/complexes, like 400+ units.
So tell me, why do they continue to spend MILLIONS saturating us with TV ads? Sure seems like they drastically slowed down wiring to save money, but kept spending the big advertising bucks... POINTLESS!

Any 192.168.x.1 address (some ending not in .1) are internal to your local network (in your house). If you have network printers, wired or wireless routers, other PCs on your internal network (including those connecting wirelessly), they will be in this range (up to 256 connections, up to 192.168.255.1). Deafult for routers are 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 . Your in-house router will also probably have DHCP on and assign numbers in your house up from there (192.168.2.1, 192.168.3.1). Of course you can set a range to for the DHCP and reassign your routers address. I have 2 routers, so I needed to change the default. I also like to keep my DHCP above 10 for wireless connections to keep my other stuff at the same address.
So, yes, using .100 as a standard does not conflict and would be safe from interferring with anything (unless you have more than 100 IP needing items attached, but then it should still just skip the # 100).

Oh I DO understand that... but those folks in my market have been that way for a while now... while millions have no access at all. Seat of the pants tells me maybe only 20% of them that see the ads CAN actually get the service.
Actually, not so sure I can tell if those ads are national or local. Even so, given the densities in my market, it still is a better business decision to have a few less ads and a lot more running of fiber. 2 miles of trunk run on the 'burbs has what, several hundred potential? 2 miles up my area has several hundred thousand potentials.
jcalabria 11-10-09, 12:26 PM 2 miles of trunk run on the 'burbs has what, several hundred potential? 2 miles up my area has several hundred thousand potentials.
In terms of street miles, sure. But there are a bunch of "vertical miles" to account for in NYC, as well.
Riverside_Guy 11-10-09, 03:27 PM But there are a bunch of "vertical miles" to account for in NYC, as well.
Not to mention that those "vertical miles" can be a bonus or a major drag. I have a very large array of windows facing south... bedroom & living room. My southern view is formed by a kind of large V... much taller buildings at either end, but similar down the middle. Gives me an intense splash of sun... at the right time of the seasons. Winter it floods in going almost 35 feet. Summer, it just touches a foot or two inside those windows. About 50 yards away from Riverside Park, a nice bike path running right along the Hudson River... I tell ya, not bad at all! Carping about not having access to FiOS in reality is kinda minor!

Not to mention there are many very grim places here, but having lived here all my life, I steered myself to where I wanted to live and once I got my foothold (as a renter) I bought (as a shareholder).
I am new to the dreaded TWC Motorola HD converter box and have been exploring what the box and the remote will do.
Yesterday, I made myself a list of about 10 HD channels that I would like to be able to forward through using the FAVORITES button. I won't go through the details, but I ended up with 4 lists that I do not want and I would like to erase or cancel them and start again with a single list of channels in the order that I want to scan them.
I went to the TWC office today for instructions, but they had no printed instructions and the office tv and remote were temporarily unavailable to demonstrate or figure out how to do it. They, also, tried their in-house, private TWC website for information on using FAVORITES, but found nothing.
Does someone here have the answers on FAVORITES?
kevin120 11-11-09, 04:18 PM go into the main menu -> select setup -> select favorites setup -> select new -> you can chose sort by name or sort by channel number. you can also punch in channel numbers . You can name the list. Also you can have up to 5 lists. You cant delete channels from the guide unless you use favorites.

Actually we're pretty happy with out Motorola box (excpet for the occasional dealys in responsiveness). We also have a Tivo and have played with a U-verse box and find the Motorola box to be pretty easy to use, and better in some respects. But the graphics aren't as pretty as on the other boxes.
To get rid of the excess Lists, Click Menu and then select the Home screen.
In the Home screen, select Setup.
In the Setup screen, select Favorites.
From that screen you will be able to remove your excess lists.

hdtvfan2005 11-11-09, 07:53 PM San Diego will actually get 10 HD more channels on 12/8.
DSperber 11-11-09, 08:02 PM TWC/LA (at least in my area) has today gotten a bunch of new channels.
For me, all the ones I was looking for are now available: AMC-HD, MSNBC-HD, E!-HD, BBCAM-HD, and TCM-HD.
NBA-HD is also available, but it's in the Sports Tier along with Tennis-HD. I thought it was going to move out of there and probably into Variety Tier (which is also where they placed MLB/MLB-HD earlier this year, since TWC/SoCal doesn't have a "digital basic" service as such).
Anyway, for now since I don't subscribe to Sports Tier it's unavailable. I thought this was specifically NOT what NBA wanted, but I guess they either don't know what TWC did or they got rolled by TWC or it's home will change eventually. I think Sports Tier has a very low subscribership (but don't know that for absolute sure).
Anyway, no AMC HD On Demand, so I missed Season 3 of 'Mad Men" and have no way to watch it yet (until AMC re-runs it, or the BluRay comes out).
DSperber 11-11-09, 09:55 PM Considering that Time Warner is part owner in MLB Network, I don't think there was any con game going on.Well some kind of hanky panky obviously went on, because TWC/LA did not implement MLB per the agreed upon terms... i.e. FREE FOR ALL DIGITAL BASIC SUBSCRIBERS... because they don't have a "digital basic" tier, and pulled the wool over MLB's eyes (in my opinion).
In my opinion, had they placed MLB in ALL optional tiers, that would have satisfied the national agreement. Since here in LA a "digital subscriber" must buy (a) basic cable, plus (b) at least one optional tier, if MLB went into ALL tiers then that would have covered 100% of LA's "digital subscribers", about as close an equivalence to "digital basic tier" as you can possible define.
But they didn't do it. Anyway, water under the dam.
But now they seem to have done a similar hokey pokey with NBA TV. According to the NBA.COM web site, "Time Warner Cable, the second-largest cable operator in the U.S., will offer NBA TV to its customers on its Digital Basic tier."
Well, that's just flat out untrue here in TWC/LA.
In fact, NBA-HD (which became available today) is STILL in the Sports Tier. It wasn't put into ALL tiers, and it wasn't moved to Variety Tier. It was left in Sports Tier, in obviously total contradiction to what they supposedly agreed to do per NBA.COM.
So they seem to want you to buy Variety Tier for MLB and Science channel and many others, Choice Tier exclusively for NatGEO which really should have been in Variety but was put into Choice so that you'd get sucked in as there are no other channels in that group of any value, Sports Tier for NBA, NHL and Tennis, while Golf is in absolutely free for everyone who's a subscriber "basic cable".
I, for one, will have none of it. I know, I'm only punishing myself by missing out on all these other channels that would only cost me another $15 if I really wanted them, but it's the principle at this point.
I'm still waiting for RoadRunner Turbo to increase to 15Mbps as was announced.
NBATV is going to move next month

BBC is great, assuming you're a fan of things like Torchwood, Dr. Who, Robin Hood, Being Human. As for Mad Men, you can get the DVDs if you have a Netflix sub, if not, try your local library. In NYC, that DOES mean you may have a LONG wait for it, but it IS available.

nickdawg 11-12-09, 01:06 PM That's odd, it looks like almost everyone on TWC just recently got MSNBC HD and BBC HD. NE Ohio added them last week. We've already had ESPN U HD and AMC since June and Cartoon Network since October.

"Should" is a dangerous word....:D
Even so, that is 38Mbps (256QAM) for 3 HD channels or about 12.6Mbps per HD (assuming a straight QOS allocation).
Wouldn't that be a tad low compared to 18Mbps that folks get OTA for HD channels and would explain why some of us see bad macroblocking for certain sporting events via TWC?

Someone on the Cleveland TWC thread posted some data about our new HD channels and I believe USA HD was close to 13 or 12 Mbps. It's horrible. WWE Raw looks worse on the HD channel than on the analog channel because of the blocking and posterizing on dark colors. It's even visible on some other programming. Lopez Tonight! on TBS HD suffered from the same thing.
