ectrader 04-08-07, 09:40 AM Thanks for the help I understand now.
One last question and I hope I can make it as clear as possible.
When I hit either "Watch DVD" or Play "Xbox 360" the reciever turns on to the correct "DVD" input but everything is hooked up via optical. How do I switch inputs under the "DVD" input on the Recieiver to cycle through optical1, optical2, opt 3, coaxial and so on??
Hope thats not to confussing.
Chris
Most receivers already know what audio input is associated with the corresponding video input.

bweissman 04-08-07, 01:11 PM I almost can't start laughing - you have no idea of my wife. The system workings have essentially not changed in 8 years and there's still the "I can't get this to work." For example, if you know the Dish remote, on the upper left are the SAT & TV buttons to activate those controls - well, at least 5X a week, it's "why can't I get this work?" because it's in the wrong mode. By the way, she's a master's level psychotherapist... hmmmm, maybe that's the problem. My wife loves the 880. Finally, she can operate the home theater system without frustration. Get the 880. And put away the Dish remote; neither of you will need it again once you've programmed the 880 correctly for your various activities.
You'll note that the 880 has Activities and Devices. I programmed our 880 so that all the wife-friendly controls are on the Activity screens and the little tweaky husband-only controls are only on the Device screens. Works like a charm.
I love the Harmony. My needs are simple and it works great for me and was easy to setup. But ............ I have had a problem with it freezing up periodically and requiring taking the battery out and then replacing it after about 5 seconds. Support exhausted all approaches so they sent a new one.
I think they felt the Extender may be the offender, but they just replaced the whole works just to be sure.
All my setup information should be at the Harmony web site. Can I just connect there and let 'er rip through the setup menu they have? I presume it will download and install the latest version when I connect there and plug in my remote.
Thanks,
Bill

JBaumgart 04-10-07, 03:10 AM It' sure nice to still see Harmony's service remaining so good. I remember the fears many had when Logitech first took them over, and I'm glad to see that these fears proved to be unfounded. I have three Harmony's and have only had to call them once about 3 years ago, and they helped me with my special setup situation very promptly.
rajdude 04-10-07, 08:29 AM It is interesting to note that I was talking to a professional remote programmer and he mentioned that "Harmony remotes are crap"
He thought that they are not flexible enough...especially if compared to RTI's stuff and Prontos.
Well, judging from my experience with a Harmony 880....flexibility is surely not there.
rajdude 04-10-07, 08:31 AM One more thing I noticed..... these remotes should be all RF.
I programmed one for someone and they complain all the time about things not working properly. I narrowed it down to how they use it...
they just dont keep pointing the 880 to the front of the theater long enough!

I don't think they are made to be as flexible as the others. They might be crap to him, but for me it works just fine. I don't need a lot of "special things."

He sounds like my wife!! She always says that it doesn't work, but I get it to work every time. The secret is to get keep it pointed at the IR sensor for more than 2 seconds :D
People can buy the 890 if they want RF (and pay a heavy price for it!).

The 880 IR transmitters, for that matter, are incredibly powerful. Better than any stock remote I own. Unless I have the thing pointed totally backwards, it will turn everything on in my system even when pointed at the side walls. For the average user, I think it's a great remote. My only beef with it is the feel of the keys. They are not easy to find by touch, but that's not a huge deal for me.

strutter 04-11-07, 11:33 AM i dont think so.mine only beeps once. that beep lets me know its on there corectly without having to look at the screen.

If that's your worst problem with this remote you're in pretty good shape. ;)
MizzouTiger 04-11-07, 05:48 PM I have searched the threads and couldn't find anything addressing this. Has anyone programmed their 880 with a Sony Bravia LCD (KDL-40V2500) to be able to turn the Sony's speakers on and off? I have 2 activities set up - "Watch Satellite" which uses my Yamaha receiver and surround sound system and I just keep the volume on the Sony at 0, and "Watch TV @ Night" where I turn off the Yamaha receiver and use the Sony's speakers for sound so it's not quite so loud. Rather than manually turn the volume on the TV up when I start "Watch TV @ Night" and having to remember to turn it back down when I quit that activity, I would like to be able to have the activity turn the TV's speakers on and off. You can get to the speaker setting by going through the TV's menu system, but I don't want to set up a macro and have it go through all those screens to do that. Are the discrete code(s) available for Logitech to program directly turning the speakers on and off?

I think you could add an action at the end of each of the activities to mute or un-mute the TV, depending on the activity.
Watch TV (with Sat box): Mute TV
Watch TV at night (TV volume): Unmute TV, turn off Yammy recevier
You would also have to tell each activity where the volume is controlled.
That might work.... let us know... David

The problem with using the Mute command with the Sony is that it constantly displays "Mute" on the screen and it doesn't go away. That's why I would like to be able to use the speaker on/off commands but without having to set up a macro to go through all of the TV's menus.

Yea, I thought of that later when I was playing with my mute button. I wasn't sure if your TV would display the mute banner only briefly, or leave on the screen. An other idea might be to send "x" number of "Volume up" and "Volume Down" commands instead of the mute command.
Good luck again, let us know how it works... (or doesn't) :)

There are speaker on/off codes listed here (http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/files/rcfiles.cgi?area=pronto&db=discrete&br=sony&dv=television) at remotecentral.com. They might work for your TV.
If you email the codes to tech support they will add them to the device profile for you.

I have a "Speaker Toggle" in my Sony device listings. It toggles the speakers and the pop up goes off.
browerjs 04-12-07, 12:28 PM Is there anyway to have a button simulate holding down a button on a regular remote? On my Sirius radio, holding down the select button, does a previous channel, so i'd like to map this action to the previous channel button.

As long as you have the select button mapped you can still hold it down to get previous channel. This method works fine on my preamp that has a similar feature.

Sure, but is there anyway to map the simulation of holding down the select button... I'm guessing no...

Where did you get the speaker on/off command from? Did you have to have Logitech add it to your setup or was it there from the beginning?

you could learn a RAW comand to a button of your choosing. as long as you hold the button down on your original remote long enough for the action to happen then the button learned should send the same signal with one push.
katzeye 04-12-07, 04:32 PM 880 and Tivo 30 second skip
I was setting up the 880 for my father and we had a problem with his Tivo. The problem was that after I programed in the 30 second skip, If I switch devices, when I went back to the Tivo the 30 second skip was disabled. Is there a way to assign 30 second skip to a button, or some other way to keep in in the tivo settings?

Thanks for the link. I copied the code for teh speaker on/off toggle and e-mailed in a message to Logitech to see if they would add it to my setup. Hopefully they will. Thanks again.
vic_ferrari 04-13-07, 09:39 PM I love the 880, but the software wizards are driving me nuts. I seem to be stuck and can't find a way to change the order (or delay for an event) that the remote uses to control the devices within an activity. I'm running a Sony projector (HS51A) which has a single input select button, which in turn will "detect" the active signal (HDMI, component, S-Video, ect...) and automatically switch to it when the button is pressed. HD cable is on HDMI, and DVD is on component. When I switch from watch Cable, to Watch DVD - the 880 will hit the projector input while the DVD player is still firing up (too quickly to decect the DVD signal coming accross the component video) ... therefor it never detects the component signal, and stays on HDMI (Cable) until I manually intervene. I need it to somehow delay a few seconds after it issues the turn-on command to the DVD player...
Does anyone know how to do this?
Thanks!

There may be (probably is) more than one way to do it. I'm doing something comparable for my configuration by having the 880 send the input selection to the device again. To do that, after going through the setup you get to a screen that asks if want to customize things. Say yes. The next screen or two will just confirm your setup for the activity, and then you will get to a screen that lets you say that the setup is correct but you want to tailor it. On that screen you can add delays and additional commands.

BernieI have a similar problem. Although the solution you mention here is the one I use, I would much rather be able to modify the built in commands that the software populates the remote with when you create a new Activity. Would there be any way to do that?
Where did you get the speaker on/off command from? Did you have to have Logitech add it to your setup or was it there from the beginning?
I was in the list. I have a Sony 60XS955. Is there a way short of using another learning remote to copy and paste a command?
I have an odd situation. I created two accounts at Harmony for a 659 and 880 remote. Somehow both logins are now tracking the configuration for the 659. I need to download the current 880 configuration from the remote back into the Harmony software. Otherwise I need to completely reconfigure the remote by entering all my customized settings manually.
Is there a way to do this?
John
LastButNotLeast 04-16-07, 02:23 PM Can't quote prices, but, if you're in the market, search Amazon.com for "Logitech Harmony 880 Remote Control - Refurbished" for a great deal. Probably the original remotes with the old cradle problem (hopefully) addressed. :)
keithki 04-16-07, 05:26 PM This is just a question of curiosity. Does anyone know what the Harmony does upon the first press of the help button? It always asks "did that fix the problem?" but it never seems to do anything. Does anyone know what the first command is?
I posted this in the 1000 thread but it seems this feature doesnt work with the 1000, I just wanted to confirm with the 880/890.
From what Im reading in the 880/890 forums is that Logitech has removed the ability to run other commands within an activity from ALL remotes? For example having the lights come up when you hit pause or lights dim when you hit play. I saw it was noted that was missing in the 1000 but it looks like it is now missing in the 880/890? Is this correct? Thanks

I bought mine last year and I can dim the lights with play, pause, stop, etc. Don't know about the latest versions. If this is true, why would they remove this great feature?
Has anyone used the 880 with a crystalio II video processor?

When you first press "Help", it re-sends ALL discretes for the current activity. This includes discretes for power on and off, and inputs to get devices to the state they should be in for the current activity.

yes it is true. it was a function on the 880/890 and then an update caused it not to work anymore. anyone who has not plugged up their remote will still have the function. i wrote a few post up that this function is supposed to come back in an update at the end of july.

check back through the thread. a few months ago they removed that function when they made a change to satisfy alot of requests to be able to change device menus to only include functions necessary for the current activity and also to be able to customize the device menus. i don't know anyone who didn't want that. but no one knew they would remove the other function along with the change.
if you haven't made any changes and updated your remote sense the change i wouldn't if you value that function.
they have also been having alot of other issues with the site. lots of errors reported while trying to update. changes disappearing. and updates that just wont work.

Thanks thats what I thought. Did they mention if this update would be for the 1000 also or strictly 880/890?
A dedicated 880 section is a good idea for us owners but it need to be a dedicated area not just a thread Ask the administrator if they will make one four us
I have had the 880 for a week & couldn't get it to talk to the PC Called everyone . PC experts, Logistec, trawled the web for help all to no avail.
The solution was simple Althought I have a new PC with Windows XP (SP2) Media Centre Edtion (2005) it didn't have HID (human interface device) drivers!
I simply copied these files from another PC (although you can also download them) hidclass.sys, hidparse.sys, hidusb.sys, hid.dll and copied them to C windows system32 drivers
Looks like if I want to use it with a crystalio II all I need to do is set it up as a dvd player and then customize it... This is going to be fun! :)

have no idea. i own an 880 and this is an 880 thread. i don't frequent 1000 threads so i really don't know what is going on with them. the indication is that they will be adding the function back. i would assume this means that if it was ever there then they will restore it on the 1000 also. but who knows what else that will mess up. it doesn't appear as though they have the greatest programmers working for them. try www.logitechforums.com or see if there is a thread for the 1000 here at avs.
i don't use the function that was removed but i still don't like not having it. i may want it someday. i have refused to update my remote even though i would like to make some changes. too many site and program problems being reported at remote central and logitech forum. mines working good enough, i don't need the hassle.
The main reason I am getting a 880 is to make things easier for my Wife. She has a hard time with my MX3000 and Sony Navitus. So hopefully since she is use to the TIVO remotes the 880 will feel like second nature to her... Here's to hoping!

There is a 1000 thread here but after reading this feature was not on the 1000 but on the 880/890 I was looking here. But now it seems they took it away on this remote also.
Which doesn't make any sense, it seem Logitechs one big drawback is the lack of customization on the remotes and now they take even more features away with software updates! Wish they had an "advanced user" option when installing the software that would let you customize

I'm going to try that. I have the problem with my HD70, that it appears to send the HDMI signal to the pj before it is ready, thus it default so something else. I actually wouldn't mind if the pj auto sensed the source since 99% of the time it is HDMI.
I see the three choices in "add more" area, but I don't understand the delay. What does it delay?
rajdude 04-17-07, 11:18 AM Does anyone know which remote should I specify while adding a new device - Microsoft remote control for Windows MCE 2005?
I think there is a particular number or something.
I have a home theater set up in which the projector is located above my head and my components are located on a side wall. With my individual remotes, I have to point the projector remote either directly at the projector or the screen and the receiver remote has to be pointed to the side wall.
If I programed the 880 to do multiple tasks, IE turn on projector, receiver and dvd player will they respond by pointing the remote toward the screen or do I need to purchase the 890?

The 880 has a wide angle at which it can be pointed and still turn on equipment. I know I've had mine turned at least 90 degrees from my equipment and they all turn on. I haven't tried any further than that.
rajdude 04-17-07, 02:03 PM You can either do the RF thing or have an hardwired IR distribution system (like me).
RF is simple and more reliable (you dont have to keep pointing the remote until it is done transmitting all the codes)
IR distribution is cheaper.

rajdude 04-17-07, 02:08 PM In practice this is not 100% reliable.
You see....I bought an 880 for a family which is not very tech savvy.
In short I regret not having recommended a RF remote.
They think "just pressing an activity button and throwing down the remote on the couch" should do all the magic. Of course I have told them to keep pointing it towards the central IR sensor mounted in the front of the HT, but still..... oh well ! :(

yep. i can point mine at either sidewall or the ceiling and it still turn on everything in front of me corectly. but it doesnt work if i point it behid me. even so, if i had a projector mounted on the ceiling or any other components not infront of me i believe i'd buy the 890.
strutter 04-17-07, 03:06 PM .
but I don't understand the delay. What does it delay?
check out the first few posts of the stickey in the remote control area. there is some discusion concerning the different delays
rajdude 04-17-07, 03:46 PM Nope! Not all discretes....but it seems to me it is "everything" including toggle commands. I am 100% sure.
For example...this Optoma PJ the 880 is controlling does NOT have discretes.
Upon sending the help button (if the PJ is on) it actually shuts down the PJ !
And it takes like 5 minutes to fire up the PJ again (not a 880 fault though)
When you first press "Help", it re-sends ALL discretes for the current activity. This includes discretes for power on and off, and inputs to get devices to the state they should be in for the current activity.
sivartk 04-17-07, 05:33 PM if i had a projector mounted on the ceiling or any other components not infront of me i believe i'd buy the 890.
I have that exact setup....projector mounted behind me at about 8 1/2 feet up. I have the 880. Surprisingly the projector remote must be pointed at the unit to turn it on, but the 880's signal is strong enough to bounce off the white screen and reach the projector without any problems. I have been using it since August 2006 this way.
Nope!
Check the "Power options" for the PJ device and make sure the commands aren't set up as discretes(ie "a button for ON and a different button for OFF").
It definately shouldn't be sending toggles when you press the Help button.
Sivartk, if I understand you right, you have the 880 with components on side wall, mine are about 11 feet from the front wall. When you point the 880 at the screen, all the components respond without any problems, correct?
I am leaning toward the 890 because I might decide to put the components in the closet and place an absorbtion panel over the hole that is there now. At least with the 890, I have more flexibility and 100% assurance my present setup will work.

Ahh...I guess you have seen my pictures. Yes, that is correct. I do, however, have to aim the remote at the right corner of the screen to get all the items to power on at the funny angles (mainly the tuner). I can sit on the couch and point at the screen to control DVD / HD DVR playback.
My room is pretty narrow so it may be bouncing all over :D
Thanks for the quick response. For the price difference, I think I am going to spring for the 890 so I don't have to worry about it. Thanks for your input and help.

fyi...I tested tonight and had the backend of the remote pointing towards the equipment I wanted to control. Worked with no problems.
Hi all, tried to find if this as been answered but found nothing clear. Here's my problem.
I got my 880 working perfectly with all device (TV, DVD, Receiver, Xbox 360), but I got BIG issues with my satellite box.
I hope I have some Canadian here, cause I'm using a Bell Xpressvu 6100 (6120 to be precise). Satellite box does turn on/off easily, but when changin channel, trying to get number entered, having the guide show up, etc... it's a mess.
I must press many many times the same button to get it to enter. To be simple, I've never been able to enter a 3 digit sequence. Samething with guide. I can having show up (1 time over a thousand), but I cannot navigate into it.
I've reset my remote, erased the Bell 6100 from my remote and reput it from logitech database and nothing again!
Please help!!
tokerblue 04-17-07, 11:38 PM Xiuvo, are you having the same issue with the original remote or are you just having an issue with the 880 when it comes to controlling the Bell Xpressvu? If you are having trouble with just the Harmony, you most likely have to adjust the delays and/or repeats. There's a sticky at the top of this forum with directions.
Another option is to learn the commands from the original remote. It's possible the database is wrong.

Also make sure there is not a setup option for your satellite box that affects how channel numbers are entered. This has been an issue for some cable company boxes, and the problem has been solved by toggling the right option in the box setup.
rajdude 04-18-07, 07:24 AM I already checked.
Unfortunately there are no discrete power commands available for this PJ - An Optoma H78 DC3
Check the "Power options" for the PJ device and make sure the commands aren't set up as discretes(ie "a button for ON and a different button for OFF").
It definately shouldn't be sending toggles when you press the Help button.
I already checked.

Yes, but the remote may be setup so that it THINKS the toggle command is actually a discrete. This will cause the problem you are having.
You might be better off just calling tech support and getting them to sort it for you.
I set up my 880 and so far so good... I don't even have to aim it and it hits my components. Now I just need to make the volume work for all devices and I'm good. And that after just a half hour of set up time! :)
its2loud 04-19-07, 02:05 PM All you 880 owners out there.
Can anyone tell me if they've successfully programmed your 880 with the Vizio tv.
Since the Vizio tv does not have dedicated buttons for switching between the 2 HDMI buttons (have to hit button twice for input 2) I'm wondering how you can program the 880 to correctly choose the right HDMI input for programmed watching modes.
I'm considereing getting an 880 but if it can't do this then it's worthless to me.
Thanks for your replies.

buckneri 04-19-07, 08:41 PM Hey guys,
I was wondering if there was a way to not turn on a device when I'm using an activity. For example when I'm watching TV and then I feel like watching a DVD I usually get up to open the tray to put a DVD in before I switch to the DVD activity. Now when I switch to the "watch a DVD" activity the remote turns off my DVD player. I know I could circumvent this problem by switching to "watch a DVD" first before I put in a DVD but I often forget to do this. So I would like to not have the remote attempt to turn on the DVD player and in effec turn off the DVD player when I use the "watch a DVD" activity. Is there any way to do this?
Thanks
or just set the remote to turn EVERYTHING on when you power it on.. or the other way is you can call logitech directly they have a "tier 1" number for installers... aka me.. and they can rewrite the code as you wait so that it tells the remote to not hit power when switching between sources..
buckneri 04-19-07, 08:43 PM if anyone on here needs help with ANY harmony remote other than the 1000 which i have not played with yet feel free to email me.. jasonneri22@comcast.net i program them all day and can pretty much answer all your questions.. as well as point you to the logitech company them selves where they actually can rewrite code as you wait on the phone to take care of things like those pesky HTIB systems where the aux button acts as 3 inputs lol..
J
buckneri 04-19-07, 08:46 PM BTW most devices have discrete codes.. even some cable boxes.. it just takes a littl epoking around.. i have found that a URC <---- HATE THEM site would usually have downloadable codes for their remotes.. then u can learn them to a harmony... so buy a crap urc and get to work.. or again.. logitech tech support has almost ALL discrete codes on file can can program them into the harmony for you .. then all u have to do is give them your login and then update your remote.
buckneri 04-19-07, 08:50 PM just full of comments for all of you today.....
for all you 890 users... little trick u might want to pay attention to.... find a local store that sells IR repeaters or go online and get some russound ir emitters.... they work for the 890 but the wire is longer and the space between two emotters is wider.. (the harmony ones are limited becase of the Y area) also cut one of them and make it longer using cat 5... and put an emitter on your tv... so you can make your system totally RF and fool proof.
Okay, I give up - you got me!! :)
After reading most of this thread, I just ordered an 880 from Amazon. Can't wait until it gets here.
Sdallnct 04-22-07, 09:19 AM I have a home theater set up in which the projector is located above my head and my components are located on a side wall.
In my set up, my pj is above and behind me. My equipment in to the side in front of me. I point the remote at the equipment and it has never missed on the projector (I have the 880)
MizzouTiger 04-23-07, 11:49 AM I have a "Speaker Toggle" in my Sony device listings. It toggles the speakers and the pop up goes off.
What model Sony television do you have? Just wondering if I can add that specific component to my setup to get the speaker on/off toggle.
dez8847 04-23-07, 01:08 PM I have had the Harmony 880 for approximately 8 months with no problems. We purchased a new TV at which time I went to update the remote. The remote connected via USB and was recognized by the Logitech Software/Web Site. During the download process the 880 locked up and would not receive any information. Now the 880 can not be recognized via USB with 3 different computers loaded with the latest software version. In addition the 880 screen says "USB Connected" but is not recognized via Logitech Software either. Logitech Tech Support advised to place in "Safe Mode" and DL the latest firmware. I made attempt in "Safe Mode" but still no recognition via USB on three different Computers or Logitech Software. Waiting on second reply from Logitech. Has anyone has similar issues?

Yes it does. I set my parents up with the 50" Vizio Plasma and a Harmony 880 and it works just fine. As far as the HDMI just program the remote to switch between the Ports depending on the source.
TheMoose 04-23-07, 08:26 PM I just got my $30 rebate check from Harmony, I ordered my 880 in January so if you haven't got your rebate from your Amazon order it shouldn't be much longer!
MizzouTiger 04-23-07, 10:55 PM Have to say I am very disappointed in my experience with Customer Support compared to other posts I have read. Contacted them about trying to get a command set up to turn my television's speaker on and off. I have a Sony KDL-40V2500 LCD set and would like to be able to turn the television's speakers off if I want to listen through my A/V surround system, and on if I want to use the TV's speakers (like at night when you don't want it so loud). Had posted on here earlier about trying to find the discrete code for the speaker on/off toggle and received a post linking to a Remote Central page that had the Pronto remote HEX code for the speaker toggle.
So I call support and she tells me they don't have a command for that. I mention the Remote Central site, and she just brushes it off. She says the Harmony can only do what the original device's remote can do - "It can't do magic". I tell her that my original Sony remote cannot go directly to one of the 8 inputs without going thru the set's menu system, but the Harmony can, so it would make sense that the Harmony could directly turn the set's speakers on and off without having to go through the menu system. She just said "No".
I have read so many other posts where people have said the customer support was great and how they would customize their remote setups for them with new codes, etc. Not for me apparently.

You need to email the actual HEX code to tech support, not just give them a link.
Then, phone them and ask to be put through to a "Tier 2" rep if the first person you get can't help. The first level support are only useful for really basic things, and don't have much in-depth knowledge, as you have found.

Not exactly the way you are trying to do it, but here is how I accomplish the function. I simply have my TV speakers turned all the way down. If I want to watch TV without the DVR and surround sound then I just turn the TV volume up. The Harmony knows what I'm watching and the volume control on the Harmony properly controls either the TV or the audio system correctly.
An advantage to that approach is that if I ever want to use the PP feature of my TV I can easily control the sound in both windows, although then I would have to use the "device" key on the Harmony.
On my TV, toggling the speakers on and off involves going into the menu and scrolling to the correct submenus and then the correct place there. I haven't looked for a direct control for that, but even if it were available I don't see any advantage and it would definitely make it harder for my wife or others to figure out what was going on. Of course we each have our own preferences for what is "simple".

I have ended up doing just what you are saying. I just added a macro to my "Watch TV at Night" activity where the TV volume goes up 6 times. Then when I leave that activity, I have the volume go down 15 times (just in case it had gotten turned up more during viewing). It does work. In my mind, I just thought that the speaker on/off toggle command would be easier. I contacted "buckneri" from a few posts earlier. Since I was able to find the speaker on/off toggle HEX command for the Pronto remote, he suggested "temporarily" getting one of those remotes, download the speaker on/off command, and learn it to the Harmony. Don't know if I want to go that route though. Not sure it's worth it.

ttexas22 04-24-07, 01:44 PM Hi all,
Does anyone have a suggestion on how to program a 10 decibel drop in volume via the 880 to my Onkyo 674? I use the A/V receiver exclusively for sound. The volume difference between network shows and local commercials is driving me mad. Thanks for any suggestions.

mx6bfast 04-24-07, 02:16 PM That's a local affiliate issue, I don't think the 880 can do that. If anythink could it would have to be your actual equipment.

barryaz1 04-24-07, 02:26 PM So after a month or 2 of mostly lurking here, I finally ordered my 880 from Amazon, and I'm sure I'll be asking a lot more questions. Also, Bargin Alert! - Amazon has refurbished 880's for a really good price (I know we're not supposed to mention actual prices here)

I realize it's the locals doing it, I just want to lower the volume 10 clicks with a single push of a button instead of 10 pushes.

MizzouTiger 04-24-07, 04:02 PM Have you thought about setting up another activity? Watch TV with speakers?
It's not about setting up another activity, it's about being able to simply turn the TV's internal speakers on and off. The Harmony doesn't have that direct command capability. You would have to set up a macro to go through the menu system to do it. I have tried that and I don't like all of the different TV menu screens flashing up on the screen when you start or stop that specific activity.

It works. Maybe you can try setting your TV as XBR instead of a V2500. If you then see the toggle option and it works, you can ask Logitech to add it to the V2500 menu. If it doesn't work, it may be another design feature left out of the V-series.

Sony KDF 60XS955.
I don't know if Harmony Tech can help you cut and paste the command. Try it out first. If you have another learning remote, you can do a back and forth???

Yes I did, and have gotten no response. When I was on the phone with support, I even brought it up again, and she just ignored it.
EDIT: I hadn't read your post/reply on the previous page about asking for a Tier 2 person. Didn't realize that might be necessary. Thanks for the info. I am first going to try to change my TV to a different Sony model which supposedly has the speaker on/off toggle in the Harmony. If that works for mine, I will call back Tech Support and see if they will add that command to my setup.

Thanks, I'll try that tonight when I get home.
EDIT: Just got onto my Harmony account here at work added another television device for a Sony KDL-46XBR2 and there is no speaker toggle to select when I go to "Customize The Device Mode For This TV". Actually, it looks like no matter what model Sony I use, the same list of commands comes up and none of them have a speaker toggle.
MizzouTiger 04-25-07, 09:37 AM thanks. i was just about to make an inquiry with amazon. i ordered mine in jan also. rebate should be here soon then.
You can check the status of your rebate by going to http://logitech.rebatestatus.com/search.aspx if you want. I ordered mine in February I believe, and according to the above link, my rebate check was mailed last Friday.
steebo777 04-25-07, 05:32 PM All very good for functionality, and IMO what users definitely wanted (I especially wanted #3 ! :D )... however, Logitech has obviously NOT been listening to all customer feedback very closely, or has definitely misinterpreted what functionality is wanted!
I don't believe customers had asked them to take away the ability to have an activity use a single button to perform multiple tasks with a single button press. Though I myself have not found this to be useful, it seems some people still wanted that ability. They should have left the button interface as it was, showing all the devices side-by-side for each activity and allowing users to set each device and remote button for any command; even allowing a single button to be mapped to several devices and therefore do multiple commands from a single button.
Even though the button customization interface itself looks cleaner now with the single line for devices using the drop-down box, IMO they instead have taken a step backwards in true user customization functionality! All they needed to do with the old button interface IMO, was stop it from forcing your button customizations from one activity to all the other activities sharing the same device.
I have been lacking in coming to these forums for the past couple of months so I was pissed when I updated my remote last week since about January. I was shocked to find the multiple commands for one button press is gone. Why the hell would they do this? Has anything been stated by Logitech or any news come about of an update for this?
miked2023 04-25-07, 07:39 PM This has probably been covered but it's become nearly impossible to charge my 880 - I don't think it has to do with the loose battery (fixed that) but it can take up to five minutes to try and line up the charger with the remote connectors - I had to put a big book on it for it to take last time. Is there any way to resolve this? Is logitech doing anything about it? thanks.

- They originally took the multiple command functionality away when they finally allowed users to customize the LCD screen for each Activity. Now each LCD command is truly independant based on Activity.
I remember seeing a post in one of these threads where someone sent an email to Logitech about the return of the multiple command functionality and they said it was slated for a June release.
Somehow, while my remote was on the charger for about 20 minutes while I stepped out, a crack developed in the plastic covering the screen. Good thing I bought it with my Amex less than 90 days ago!

I have one of the pesky HTIB that does exactly as you say. Had some initial problems but after dealing with Teir 2 they were able to get it to work. Tier 1 was not as helpful. If anyone is having these kind of issues with the remote I highly suggest you give tech support a call. I was completely satisfied with the way I was treated as a customer and it seemed they really wanted to get this remote to work for me. So far, I'm a happy Harmony 880 owner.

So I purchased an 880 for the HT I set up in a town-house in Vegas. The first remote I purchased worked the projector (Mits HD1000u), Sony CD-Changer, HD-Tivo, and HD-DVD player mostly OK... it seems to have a button issue where while watching TV and using the buttons occasionally you can push a button 4 or 5 times and it never sends a signal (no transmit icon shows). Also it would never turn the AVR on or off (Yamaha 2090). However, you could always turn the AVR on via the HELP menu or via the Device section.
I worked with level two for several hours and they could never get the AVR to function properly. So due to the button push issue they RMA'd the first remote and sent me a new (second Vegas) remote.
I loaded the old profile after charging into the new remote. Now the new 880 will NOT turn on either the AVR or the Projector? I have spent over an hour on the phone with level two and they could not figure it out either. They asked me to run some tests and respond back. I have done so and the following is the email I have sent to tech support.
After reading if any of you have suffered similar problems and can suggest solutions I would certainly like to hear them!!!!
.............................................
Okay I ran all the tests per you request.
The results were incredibly frustrating and disappointing.
I hope the young lady from Toronto that I met at Cedia will be able to help. What is happening makes no sense at all.
My original 880 here in Vegas has “issues” where not all the button presses are recognized (no transmit icon during button press). Also that remote would not reliably turn on or off the Yamaha AVR (model 2090). However, it ALWAYS turned the projector on and off.
The NEW 880 here in Vegas………………….
Listen to Radio Activity perfect…….. Turns on AVR and selects Tuner. Turns off every time from main silver switch or from the Power Toggle within the device mode. Power On/Off and Power On/Off Zone1 or 2 do not work…
Listen to CD’s Activity perfect…… turns on AVR and selects CD input… applies correct sound field. Also turns off both CD and AVR each time silver off button is pushed.
Watch HD-DVD…… HD-DVD player starts, but NO Projector and NO AVR. You can turn on AVR from Power Toggle within Device mode (instant you push button) or from HELP button by answering question Is the AVR on… NO. Selecting Silver OFF button turns off HD-DVD player, but NOT AVR.
Watch HD-Tivo…. NO Projector and NO AVR. AVR can be turned on from within Device mode or by using help… first time. However I attempted to use the HELP mode 12 times to turn on the projector and it does not turn on. I tried the ON and OFF buttons within the Device mode without success. I also tried the Power On and Power OFF within the Device Mode and they did not work either. I tried to use the Power Toggle selection within the Device Mode and it did not work either.
I then went back and tried the original 880 that I purchased for here in Vegas and when I selected the Watch HD-Tivo activity it turned on the Projector first time, but did not turn on the AVR. I could turn on the AVR with the HELP function.
These responses are very confusing and frustrating. How can the signals work from one remote and not another? Are you folks having a QC issue where you have seen this behavior before?

And you downloaded it? Not quite there yet, 2 days to go. :D
The Vista compatible 7.3 software was available for download on Friday, now that I actually want to download it, it is gone.
Was it pulled because of problems?

Not sure why it was pulled, but it works fine for me.

I think I found out why they pulled it. It won't install. I'm using Ultimate with a DreamScene. That could be the issue, or something else. I keeps telling me it wants to stop a running version (which isn't running) and repeats. It let me abort.
TorinoCobra 04-28-07, 09:42 PM EDIT: Just got onto my Harmony account here at work added another television device for a Sony KDL-46XBR2 and there is no speaker toggle to select when I go to "Customize The Device Mode For This TV". Actually, it looks like no matter what model Sony I use, the same list of commands comes up and none of them have a speaker toggle.
Did you Click the "Additional Buttons" button? I just pulled up my KDL-46XBR2 Device Mode options and found the "SpeakerToggle" command in the tenth group of commands. I have not updated my remote in several months, but I cannot imagine that they would have removed this command from the KDL-46XBR2 device mode commands.

Nope, not there. I have tried several different Sony models and have not have it show up

Interestingly, I haven't updated my TV either, in a long time and now I have a discrete Video 8 choice. It replaced the Video 7 + input next which Harmony used to get to 8. Not to mention the speaker toggle. What's happening behind the scenes?
Well, I violated the 'leave well enough alone' principle and now, I'm completely fubar'd.
Courtesy of AVS, I had found a working implementation for my Harmony 880 to control my Vizio P50HDM. Using input cycling, and issuing a number of commands to get to the input I needed (as follows):
Is this list of inputs correct?
[next]
What command do you use to get your device to go to this input RGB
* Use these infrared commands:
InputRGB
[next]
What command do you use to get your device to go to this input AV1 (Video)
* Use these infrared commands:
InputRGB
* I send more commands
InputS-Video
[next]
So I decided to add a new device to the remote, and it asked me if I wanted to update the TV with a new model. Now, I can't get back to setting my inputs the "old" way, I'm forced to choose between 4 different 'methods' of setting the input (none of which seem to match my set), and no permutation I've tried (and I think I've tried 'em all) gets me back to a menu where I'm asked if 'I send more commands'.
Above and beyond that, even though I've updated the TV, it keeps telling me there's a new update available. This, after I've updated the remote several thousand times (ok, maybe only 800).
After a stressful NFL draft yesterday, this remote is lucky it survived, but it's pushing its luck at the moment. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
scooterboy 04-29-07, 05:37 PM Somehow, while my remote was on the charger for about 20 minutes while I stepped out, a crack developed in the plastic covering the screen. Good thing I bought it with my Amex less than 90 days ago!
Very strange that a crack would spontaneously appear.
Just out of curiosity - do you have kids? And if so, were they out with you or at home when this crack mysteriously appeared?
:p

Hi all. Just wanted to proclaim my love for the 880. I just picked it up a few days ago and I'm thrilled with it.
At first it was a bit of a stuggle to get it to where I was happy, due to my MCE machine, but everything is perfect now.

If you're being serious and you really didn't drop it or something, call Harmony. They replaced mine when the USB charger port came loose. They were incredibly easy to deal with.

its2loud 05-02-07, 06:47 PM Hey all 880 owners out there. My 880 is about 2 weeks old and I noticed there are a couple of buttons they require a little more pressure when pressing them. Is this normal or is there something wrong with my remote? Most of the buttons will send the IR signal with just the slightest pressure and "click"of the button. A few require that I actually press harder on the button in order for it to send. I've already called Logitech about this but I'm supposed to wait for an email contact from Warranty. Any input is appreciated.

The buttons on the harmony 880 are garbage (poorly and cheaply designed compared to other Harmony's and other remotes) as you have just noticed; they will, however, replace it no problem.

Have two of them and haven't had any problems. The operate smoothly and consistently. I think "garbage" is a little harsh.

* keep this in the context of build quality/durability, nothing else *
For a remote that retails over $150, the buttons are pathetic and the materials are less than desirable. Just because you haven't had an issue doesn't mean that they aren't serious and don't exist. I can't count how many posts I've read where people have had the button faces just fall off or the buttons just not work. I myself have had buttons fail on one 880, and have other different, just as troublesome issues with the replacement.
This is a perfectly fine customizable remote (affordable) for the masses if you are comfortable with its issues; however, if you've sampled other more price prohibitive remotes you will appreciate their build quality and this remotes lack there-of.
That said, Harmony will make good with any mechanical problems you have (they need to); something that is not as easy to come by with other manufacturers.

Have no idea what the button failure rate is on the 880's, but if it was really bad you would certainly hear more about it - they've sold tons of these and from following this board since its introduction you don't see that many complaints about this issue.
peugenio1914 05-03-07, 01:08 AM pretty much only use my 880 when i watch dvds so that's mostly on weekends. the remote is usually sitting on the charging base. a few weeks ago i noticed the screen was blank, but the buttons still work and it controls the right components. anything i can do?

I recently had this happen to my Harmony 720. My LCD would never come on, but the remote still worked. All I did was hook the remote up to my computer and update it. Blammo...LCD screen started working.

You will notice that on-line retailers (ie. Amazon, Newegg, etc) sell TONS of refurbished 880's; this isn't an isolated event - they sell TONS (there are dedicated threads on this on Fatwallet.com and slickdeals.net). There is a reason for this availability of refurbished units.
You may wan't to argue that this is a small percentage of their total volume (well, we can't argue this since we don't know the actual numbers). I will say that I've NEVER seen such a glut of refurbished remotes since ever.
rajdude 05-03-07, 09:29 AM When was this 880 released?
I think it is pretty old now (old design).
They ought to come out with a new version with better button layout.
rgroves 05-03-07, 09:48 AM They did come out with a new remote... It's called the Harmony 1000.

I would say that the Harmony 720 (http://reviews.cnet.com/Logitech_Harmony_720/4505-7900_7-31929414.html) is closer to a replacement for the 880 than the bigger than your lap, no tactile feel 1000. Maybe it's just me, but I don't want to look at a remote all the time to execute a command, I like the feel of buttons.

Logitech has reposted the 7.3 software for the 880.(Vista Version)
Are you saying that you lost your speaker toggle or that it has mysteriously appeared?
Was away sorry for the delayed response. No it's still there. Video 8 appeared after originally being 7+video next. It's all moot for me now. My Sony was "lemoned" by my EW and now I'll have to fight my way through programming a new TV. Whatever that will be. :D

Nope for the longest time 8 was 7+next.

A longer answer might have been. Yes they light up, but unless you viewing room is almost pitch dark, you won't notice. Wanna see a remote light up, get you hands on the remote bundled with the Xbox HD-DVD add on. Wow! Too bad it's useless on anything else. But man it lights up!

DavidEC 05-06-07, 06:07 PM My "BIGGEST" trouble with this remote is changing the way that I think about remotes...
I come from the world of "JP1" remotes and use to have command sets stored in the remote.
And the fact that you are almost required to have the orignal remotes to make sure tha this new remote is working correctly.....
And no mater how many times I would search the Logitech support area could never find how to program the device to run more than one TIVO / DirecTV R10 device.... if it was not due to finding the answer on the tivo site that links from this form I would still be searching.

I had the same problem. The install program for 7.3 kept saying that harmony software was already running and never shut it down.
After going to the Control Panel and un-installing 7.1, 7.3 installed with no further problems.
I have both an 880 and an 890.
Last week I was trying to get the 880 configured so the functions assigned to each button on the LCD screen would be the same on different activities that use the same type of device.
Since I kept making mistakes, I needed to keep going back into my activities and going back to customize buttons.
Each time I returned to customize buttons, all my previous changes had been lost. I sent an e-mail describing the problem and it worked correctly toward the end of the week.
This week when I had to add an additional device, all my previous changes were lost again for customize buttons.
Another thing that I noticed is that it no longer recognizes blanks as valid entries.
I used to be able to leave the first two selections blank, so that I could have the same function assigned to the same button in multiple activities which use the same device.
When I updated the remote with the blanks entered, the software now ignored them and just starting showing functions from top to bottom.
The only way I could find around this was to assign some function that I did not want to the place where I had previously used spaces.
By the way this was using the WEB site with the 7.1 software installed on Vista. I have not tried it again since I have installed 7.3.

I am running Windows XP and the latest version Harmony Software on their download site brings up v7.3, so I don't think it is a Vista only update.
My question is -- what's new in this version? I could not find any history log listing the changes in v7.3.

rettenhu 05-10-07, 06:03 PM The Harmony 880 does not appear to switching properly between HDMI ports and the discreet code for HDMI2 does not work at all. I was on the phone with Logitech Support for about two hours. I am happy to report that they did some remote programming and my remote now seems to be controlling all 3 of my HDMI ports as well as Component 1 and the Antenna (TV). If you have interest in getting your remote updated by them, you can probably reference my incident # 070510-003744.
Let me also say that it was truly a pleasure to work with Logitech Customer Support. After describing my issue they immediately escalated the problem to the next level of support where Melissa was persistent in getting this resolved.

Edit: I forwarded a set of discrete input codes previously posted by jnelson2000 to Logitech so their database team could take a view of it compared to what they have. I volunteered to test it for them and I will post back once Logitech gets back to me.
burt_bladers 05-12-07, 03:23 PM I just got my 880 yesterday and I have spent a little bit getting everything working. The only thing I can't find is a device setting for the original xbox remote.
I tried to get it to learn it manually, but I couldn't get that working. That I think is a user error, I'm still trying to get used to how everything works.
burt_bladers 05-12-07, 07:24 PM I'm now having issues updating. It never wants to go beyond 0% when running the update software. I'm not having any connection issues with the remote that I know of. It beeps when I plug in the USB cable and I get a message saying "USB Connected" and the logitech (7.3) software hasn't given me an error saying it can't connect to the remote either. Anyone else ever have this problem? It did the initial update with no problems earlier today.
mx6bfast 05-12-07, 09:25 PM Did Harmony take off the 7.0 upgrade mandatory? I plugged mine up, the first time since early January and didn't prompt me to update any software.
burt_bladers 05-12-07, 09:40 PM When I installed 7.0 on my Mac today it prompted me to upgrade to 7.3.
And as an update to my situation, switching from windows to my mac allowed me to update my remote again.
JBaumgart 05-12-07, 11:08 PM I haven't update either of mine in over a year. I've been reluctant since both of them work well enough, and I've read about so many software-related problems here. As they say, "if it ain't broke...."

Wiggles 05-13-07, 02:08 PM I just picked up one myself (should be here either tomorrow or Tuesday) after playing with a friend of my dad's 880. That, and I'm up to 5 remotes now, and it requires the use of at least 3 of them to do most tasks.
craig_wagner 05-13-07, 03:12 PM I've got one on order and it should be here tomorrow.
As I've been doing some reading there is one thing that concerns me. My most common activity is to watch television, which would involve the following steps (not necessarily in this order):
turn on TV
turn on receiver
set tv input
set receiver input
set receiver sound field mode
My concern is that some comments seem to be implying that sending a set of commands such as I've described could be a 20 second task.
I don't know if those are the Harmony-haters trying to be jerks, or if it's accurate. Those of you who are actual Harmony users, could you comment on this?

The reciever sound mode would probably carry over to what it was last time you turned it off. It only takes 4 seconds for mine to do all of the above.

The remote will send commands as fast as your devices can handle it. The problem is that some devices need a long time after they have been turned on until they are ready to accept an input command(or any other command). This is a problem of the devices, not the remote, and depends on the individual device.

Because I might have changed the sound field mode manually, or watched a DVD last time (for which I use a different sound field mode), I'll want this activity to set it each time so I know it's set to the correct value.
I'll additionally want the DVD player off and the night toggle off, so there's a couple of extra steps that'll have to be added. Sounds like I might be in the 5-6 second range. That's about double what it takes my current Pronto to send, but still not the 20 seconds that I've read elsewhere.

You can always send additional commands. If the sound fields have discrete commands it will be easier. Those commands will list in the devices list of commands.

I'll additionally want the DVD player off and the night toggle off, so there's a couple of extra steps that'll have to be added. Sounds like I might be in the 5-6 second range. That's about double what it takes my current Pronto to send, but still not the 20 seconds that I've read elsewhere.
As I said above, the Harmony will send commands as fast as your Pronto. The only limiting factor is how fast your devices can receive the commands.
rpearlberg 05-14-07, 12:36 PM I haven't read all of this thread, but I have a few questions...When I press Watch TV, it turns on the TV and Receiver, the TV is set to TV input for a few seconds and then switches to another input with nothing on it, then I manually have to change it back to TV...I've tried to adjust the settings, but can't seem to get it to work...Any suggestoins?
The other question is- I use the remote to set the sleep timer on my TV and it works, is there a way to have the remote turn off the Receiver also, even though it doesn't have a timer. Does the remote unit itself have a timer to turn everything off?
Thanks!!

I had a similar problem with my Panyy pdp via HDMI to an Onkyo AVR. The "problem" was with the Panny. There is an "auto on" option with HDMI, that when set to "yes" would incorrectly change the input from HDMI1 to TV. Changing it to "no" corrected the problem.
1) Have you checked your TV menus for something similar?
2) It's possible that you may have inadvertently added an additional command that changes the TV input. Have you tried pointing the Harmony away from the TV immediately after the TV and receiver are turned on?

Gibbsman 05-15-07, 06:43 PM I bought my 880 last week, in preparation of getting my HLT6187S later this summer. I've gotten it mostly setup, but I can't seem to get it to control my Creative DDTS-100 properly. Does anyone else have this AV Receiver? I know it's not that great of quality, but it does a great job connecting my Klipsch Promedia 5.1 Pro's to my home theater system.
The problem is that it hardly ever gets the optical input correct. I don't know if it accepts discreet commands or if it is just trying to remember where it was and adjust accordingly, but it doesn't seem to work.
Also, my TV takes a few seconds to turn on before it can accept the change in input. How can I add a delay in there so it will try to change the input after the TV is on? My crappy Philips CRT tv was in the Logitech DB, so I hoped that it would do this delay automatically, but it doesn't. I thought that there was a feature that you could further tweak all those settings but in the 7.3 software, when I tell it to change the settings on the activity, and then go to advanced features or whatever it's called, it only give me the option to add a new device to the activity rather than tweak how it works. Since I'm a noob on the 880, I wouldn't rule out user error, but I consider myself to be pretty savvy with electronics.
Edit: I figured out how to adjust the timing. I did it off the website rather than in the actual software and let it send the file to the software for the actual update. I'm still searching for info on the DDTS-100 issue though.

I'm having a similar issue with my samsung LNT4661
1. My Cable/DVR Box is in HDMI 2
2. I have a cable splitter (1) into my Cable/DVR box and (2) into the TV for PIP
I am trying to run a "Watch TV" Activity.
When the TV is on and I am playing Xbox or a DVD, pushing the activity works fine, and it goes to HDMI 2. It also works if I turn off the TV in another input, and push the "Watch TV" activity.
But, when I turn the TV on (After turning it off in the HDMI 2 input), the TV turns on, I see the Cable TV, and the remote then goes ahead and inputs the "HDMI 2" command and the TV goes to my over the air cable input. I then have to press the activity button again in order for it to work.
Any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to PM me. Thanks!
craig_wagner 05-17-07, 01:58 AM I spent about an hour-and-a-half tonight teaching the Harmony all the discrete codes I have in my Pronto for the Yamaha RX-V1500 receiver. Once I was done that I went in to set up the device pages and none of the default options were there and the drop down lists were all empty.
I'll phone support tomorrow when I get home from work, they were closed by the time this happened. But does anyone have any idea what's up with that?
All of my other devices still have their list of command populated, just the receiver. I probably taught it three dozen discrete codes.

I'm surprised you needed to teach it any discretes for a Yamaha receiver. I have a Yamaha receiver of a similar vintage(although a lower model than the 1500) and all the discretes were already in the database. I'm guessing all Yamahas would use a similar codeset, so you might be able to get tech support to transfer them from a different model if they aren't available for yours.

The database didn't have discretes to go to most of the sound field modes. For example, on the original remote there is a Stereo button that toggles between 2-Ch Stereo, 7-Ch Stereo, and Direct. The Harmony database has that button, but it does not have the discrete codes to go directly to each of the sub-types. The same is true for the Entertainment, Neo 6, and Pro Logic II buttons, each is a toggle with two or more sub-types.
They are also lacking the codes to use the Home Memory and Volume Memory banks. There are six Memory Set buttons and six Memory Recall buttons for each bank.
I can't recall what else I was trying to teach it off the top of my head.
Some of the buttons that are in the database do not perform the action they are labeled for. I get the feeling the database is kind of a free-for-all, where they'll put in any code they are sent. I understand that they can't buy every piece of equipment out there and verify that the codes work, so that's not a big deal. The database for this device contains two Dolby/DTS codes, one works, the other does nothing.
Is there any way to make the 880 work with the PS3 ?
Cheers
rettenhu 05-18-07, 10:31 AM The Harmony 880 does not appear to switching properly between HDMI ports and the discreet code for HDMI2 does not work at all. I was on the phone with Logitech Support for about two hours. I am happy to report that they did some remote programming and my remote now seems to be controlling all 3 of my HDMI ports as well as Component 1 and the Antenna (TV).
Let me also say that it was truly a pleasure to work with Logitech Customer Support. After describing my issue they immediately escalated the problem to the next level of support where Melissa was persistent in getting this resolved.
Rick
Edit: I forwarded a set of discrete input codes previously posted by jnelson2000 to Logitech so their database team could take a view of it compared to what they have. I volunteered to test it for them and I will post back once Logitech gets back to me.
I am happy to report that all 3 of my HDMI inputs are now switching properly on my Samsung HL-T series TV. The only issue I am still working with them on is getting the custom button labeled HDMI2 to switch directly to that input. Anybody with a 2007 HL-T series Samsung who is having problems getting the Harmony to switch inputs properly may want to update their remotes with the latest database updates and/or contact Logitech Harmony support directly.

The PS3 works with Blutooth and the 880 doesn't support Bluetooth. Try these partial workarounds /"fixes"posted in the Playstation 3 forum.

HiHoStevo 05-19-07, 03:13 AM I was wondering if anyone has a solution .... ?
I created a profile that has "issues" that neither I or tech support seem to be able to understand or solve.
So I started from scratch with a new profile and that one is working much better.... BUT...
In the first profile I went into the "media" section for my wife's 400 disc CD player and typed in the artist and title for all her CD's right into the Harmony software....
So how do I move all of this information without having to re-type in the entire list by hand to the new profile???????????

Talk to Tier 2 tech support. They might be able to transfer the list over from your old account.
You should be able to do it when you set up the activity. When you go through the activity setup, I believe there are 3 options - yes, it's fine, yes, it's ok but i want to change something, and no, it's not right (i'm paraphrasing). Select the middle one. It goes back through the setup, but then will give you the opportunity to add additional commands.
As for default, my yamaha seems to stick with whatever it was last set on (HTR-5950).
Just want to say "thanks very much!" for this clue. My HD DVD player is connected to my Yamaha receiver via 5.1 analog input, but that input is a toggle command and even when I go to another source the 5.1 is still selected. Finally with your advice I was able to tell the Harmony to toggle out of 5.1 input when I leave the HD DVD player.
DavidEC 05-19-07, 07:57 AM ?? When setting up an activity and you want your digital TV to tune into say 3-1 during the select input phase of set-up why is it that the activity will not allow for a channel selection of 3-1 ??

I did ask Tier 2... as they in the past have been able to get "settings" that I needed from someone elses profile... I thought they could do this... but the person I talked to said he did not know how?
I was hoping some of the experts here would be able to tell me!

Thanks. I checked out the thread and will mess around with it later. I setup the HR20 as D* PVR 2. I wonder if I change the stb's with separate IR codes with the normal D* remote if that will work?
Now my problem is the 880 isn't updating the screen options for the D* PVR 2 option.
I wish my HDTivo didn't act up. :(
smitchell24 05-21-07, 12:34 AM Anyone have any problems with the 880 working with a Toshiba HD-DVD D2? Have not been able to make it work as of yet....
mx6bfast 05-21-07, 10:34 AM I was able to get my problem resolved.
I had to setup the remote for the HR20 with the code 00001 and have the slider on the D* logo. On the H20 I used code 00002 and had the slider on AV1.
I then called Harmony and after some discussion and other things this is how we fixed it. I first had to dl 7.3 (which I hated because I have to add all devices/activates back in) and then follow these steps. I did the HR20 first:
Click the Devices tab
Under the D* box I wanted to isolate, click Settings
Click on Confirm IR commands
Select Yes I have a remote for the device
IMPORTANT!!!! Make sure you have the slider in the correct position.
It will then ask you to do some commands and then will analyze those.
Once it is done click Finish or Done or whatever is available.
Doing those steps completed the HR20 saying it was using the best set of commands.
Next was time for the H20. I flipped the slider to the AV1 setting, did the steps above, and the software said it was NOT using the best commands and then it setup new commands.
I updated the remote, and wa-la, I can control the H20 and the HR20 separately with my 880.
mx6bfast 05-21-07, 10:36 AM My favorite list the same as above. If you find the answer to eliminating the numbers, please post.
I asked about this because I can barely read the icon and now number, and the guy said it is scheduled to be added on June 15th so we can remove the channel numbers.
Please go easy on me, I've ventured over here from the other areas on AVS I frequent daily, and found the official thread for my remote.
I just got the 880, got it programmed and such. Still far from perfect, but I'm stuck on one thing. I use the remote while sitting on my couch, and most of the time it's not close enough to the cable box and doesn't get the commands. My Comcast remote with aging batteries? No problems whatsoever.
I've charged up the battery only for a couple hours now, but it is showing 3 bars. I'll let it charge up overnight, but so far it's slower to respond, and won't work unless i stand up from my couch, which is maybe 10 feet from my AV rack. Glass door on front, but every other remote has no problems with that.
I'm at a loss for what else to do... is there anything obvious that i've missed?

Sounds like there is something wrong. My 880 sends a MUCH stronger signal than my original (Motorola/Comcast) cable box remote, even when the latter's batteries are brand new. Hopefully someone else here will have a suggestion, other than to request an exchange.

I have to agree with you. The 880 sends a much stronger signal than any of my other 6-7 remotes (none of which I use any longer). Something is wrong with the 880.
Codeman 05-23-07, 08:20 AM I wouldn't be so quick to blame the 880. My Mot/Comcast DCT6200 has the same problem with my 880. If the problem was the 880, it should affect all components, not just one. I suspect that the IR sensors for some of Motorola's boxes expect IR signals that have a slightly different wavelength than normal and that that is the cause of the problems. I've had 4 different DCT6200 and they all behaved the same. The 880, however, has no problem controlling my AVR, VCR, DVD, TV, mini-stereo, CD, or switching power supply, even from 20-30 ft and at a greater than 45° angle. It's only the DCT6200 that has a problem.
Although I don't know what wavelength is standard for IR controllers, the IR band is roughly from 750 nm to 1mm. If the DCT6200 and it's controller are both off of the standard by just a bit, they will work fine together but other controllers that more closely match the standard will have troubles. Complicating matters is the fact that IR emitters don't output a single-wavelength - they transmit a range that is within a certain tolerance of the specified wavelength. If the emiiter leans towards one end of the tolerance band while the sensor leans towards the other end of the band, the result is that you have to either get closer and/or point the remote more directly at the sensor for it to work.
Hope that helps.
You could always get Comcast to swap out boxes. You could also borrow another brand of universal remote and see if it has the same problem. If it does, then the problem is most likely the box. If not, then your 880 may have a problem, but that seems unlikely if it's controlling the other equipment okay.
I'm not swapping the DVR box, this one has worked pretty well and I have a lot of recordings to save. I know about about those boxes, and if you have a pretty good one, best not to be trading it in, there are a lot of bad boxes.
I have an older GE universal remote that I used to use w/ the old cable box a couple years ago, I will see if that works better with the cable box from my sitting position. I'll also try the TV and DVD player and see if they work.
About the only device that worked right off the bat was the TV. For the 3416 DVR, which "device" is it? A "PVR" or a "Digital set-top box"? It's both, but with the Harmony it's one or the other apparently. I went with the set top box, since a PVR usually doesn't have a guide.

I identified my 6416 as a PVR.
I tried it with other devices, holding in the same position, no go for any device. I grabbed my original remotes and held them in the exact same position, they all turn on the devices.
Looks like I'll be attempting to return it, I wasn't digging the peanut shape anyway, and don't like the buttons on it. Seems like a pretty nice product though. Oh well. Thanks for the suggestions.

I can assure you that my harmony correctly switches for Activities I have on HDMI,2,3 as well as TV and Component 1. I also checked the custom TV commands for the other ports and they all work now for me. What I can't confirm is whether Harmony has updated their database yet with the changes they put in for me. I am trying to reach my contact at harmony that worked with me to get mine working and to confirm their database has been updated for other Samsung HL-T owners. In any event, I would suggest you update your remote when you get your TV and contact Harmony if any inputs do not switch correctly. I have called support on several issues over the years and they have always been excellent to work with.
One word of caution... you will see a number of duplicate input command for the TV in Device Mode. You will need to weed out the ones that don't apply as well as the dupes that don't work...
I love my HL-T6189 and am sure you will enjoy the 6187 as well!
I had a similar issue to rettenhu with my Harmony 880 and my new Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 1080 projector. Their discrete code for the HDMI input doesn't appear to work. I was able to solve this by learning the command in RAW and then assigning an extra action on the end of each activity to send that command to the projector.
I upgraded from XP Media Center Edition to Vista Ultimate's Media Center.
Harmony 880 worked fine with XP.
With Vista when I click a remote button the PC responds as if I clicked the button twice, e.g. press direction left, PC moves left two places.
It seems that this happens when the PC is busy, e.g. right after resume from sleep.
Anybody have any ideas how to solve this?
Regards
P.

Yes, I have this problem. Also set my inter-key delay to 0, and could tell no difference . My TV will not change channels like yours and waits for the last channel digit. I don't know how to speed this input up but if you find out appreciate you letting us know. I have not contacted support. I am using an IR receiver with IR emitters attached to each device in the cabinet but hardly think this would slow things down. All though we have set this key to zero, by my timing the speed between inputs is more like we have it set at 500 or 1/2 second between each channel digit sent.

I dare say, since the 880 doesn't come standard with a safety strap, I think it is ill advised to use an 880 with a Wii. ;)
That said, is the WiiMote IR?
If it is it can learn it if it's not in the database yet.

BEaggie08 05-30-07, 03:39 PM My Harmony 880 died a couple weeks ago (at least I think it is dead). It suddenly stopped accomplishing any tasks. Nothing happened when I pressed buttons. I took the battery out and put it back in; nothing. I let all the juice drain out of it and then recharged it and tried it again; nothing. Of course I dumped everything off of it and reinstalled all of the my compenents and still nothing. It obviously just isn't transmitting anything when I push buttons.
Any suggestions on what to do or where to go from here? I am currently using my cable company's DVR remote as a universal and it is torture.
TIA

I took the battery out and put it back in; nothing. I let all the juice drain out of it and then recharged it and tried it again; nothing. Of course I dumped everything off of it and reinstalled all of the my compenents and still nothing. It obviously just isn't transmitting anything when I push buttons.
Any suggestions on what to do or where to go from here? I am currently using my cable company's DVR remote as a universal and it is torture.
TIA
Maybe call Harmony and see what they can do for you? I assume by the way you write it's out of warranty, but given its age totally unacceptable lifespan. Short of using it like a WiiMote.

Only thing i might would try is to rewrite the firmware. If its not doing anything..i dont think it would hurt to try the FW re-write.

it was suggested earlier in the thread to look through a digital camera at the emitter while pressing buttons on the remote. this suposedly will tell you if the emitters are working. i havent tried it and i have absolutely no idea why you'd have to look through a camera. (if someone could explain i'm open for ideas)
You just need to have the camera pointed at your IR emitter. Then while pressing any button on the remote, look at the LCD screen of your camera. You should see a white flashing coming from the IR emitter. It should be very noticeable and you can't miss it.

wdkerbow 05-30-07, 05:35 PM Yep, it happened to me back in September '06. Diagnosis: defective IR emitter.
Called Support and they had me run an interesting test. Point the remote at a digital camera like you're going to take a picture of it. While looking through the camera's screen, press a button on the remote. If you don't see the IR signal, it's defective. Just to verify, try the same test with any remote that is working.
Harmony will replace the remote for you...
Here's the post about that.... sounds interesting....

That is pretty cool I didn't know you could do that (so of course I had to try it myself! LOL!)
I've never had a problem with my emitters, I can point it 180 degrees away from my equipment & everything works it just bounces off the walls.
The 880 has a very powerful pair of emitters.
strutter 05-30-07, 06:08 PM what emitters  all i can see is a wonderful screen saver ;)

Move the damn camera out of the way.

susquehannabooks 06-01-07, 01:01 PM Searched for this but couldn't find an answer. Trying to add favorite channels for the high def stations- like 101.001, etc. Seems like there is only enough space to add 5 digits. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance.
mx6bfast 06-01-07, 01:26 PM Does anyone know how to turn off the reminder that your battery is low and you need to press the right arrow button? It has only popped up since 7.3 and is very annoying.

I don't have that issue, but I do remember reading about it, so it's probably in an earlier post.

i remember something about the program not accepting "." or "-" and a work around for it. the poster wanted to program 36.2 or something. i don't recall anything about 6 digits. but i agree that somewhere in here is the answer or something close.
it might be quicker to call support.
TheMoose 06-01-07, 06:39 PM Is there a problem with the Harmony site?

rman222 06-03-07, 09:04 PM Hi,
Sorry if this has already been answered but I couldn't find it using search. I just got the 880 and want to program 2 dvd players for use (one HD and one regular). How do I add a second dvd player to the device list? I seems to limit me to one dvd player. Also, I have a Motorola charter digital cable box that does not have a model number that I can find anywhere on the unit. Any suggestions as to how to enter that?
Thanks in advance,
Joe H

You can add as many as you want. To differentiate just rename one of them.
Usually the model numbers are on the underside on a sticker? Not there? Maybe Charter's web site has more info??? Also find the Charter forum on AVS someone there will know.
probepro 06-04-07, 12:52 AM I've seen back, side, and front views of the 880 from Logitech , but none of them clearly show button labels. Anyone have a front view the 880 where you can actually read the writing and markings on the front?

hiddenleavez 06-04-07, 03:07 PM Just got my 880 today, and have a fairly big concern.
I have a Samsung LCD HDTV/Oppo DVD player/Xbox 360...pretty simple setup.
I've gotten the activities for the Oppo and 360 to work fine, the only thing not working atm is the "Watch TV" activity. I have requested the TV be set to "TV" as the input when watching TV is selected, but for some reason the TV switches to the "HDMI2" input when using the activity.
What is going on with this thing?! My particular TV uses a scrolling input selection if that matters...with a "source" button to scroll through the diff. inputs, or by going to the menu and using arrow keys. No direct input switching.
I have tried the help menu, to no avail. I've also tried the device button when in "Watch TV" and none of the given input selections actually select the TV Tuner (antenna) that allows me the correct input. The only way I can get to the actual tuner is if I use the "TVVIDEO" key on the LCD to scroll through my TV inputs.
Can someone please help?
Thanks
I have the exact same problem with my Samsung LCDTV and I adjust my remote to "Antenna" input when I press "watch TV". However, it isn't the right discrete code to go directly to the TV source, instead it does nothing when it's on another source such as HDMI1. I believe the Antenna button is used to switch from NTSC to ATSC and not different source and I can't seem to find what is the discrete code to go directly to the tv tuner. Anyone else have this problem?

It might be easier for you to go to a store and look at one. Or if you have specific questions/concerns ask about them here.
There are six buttons that have particularly small labels, but they can be very useful. THey're not the buttons you use often though.
In the photo that craig_wagner just uploaded, the vertical button in the center all the way at the top is the universal off button. The button just to its left is the Activity button, and the button to the right is the Help button. We don't use either of them often, but they're very useful when you want them.
There is a left arrow and a right arrow just below the LCD screen. They let you page forward or backward for activities, devices or favorites that need more than one screen to show all their options. We rarely use those buttons
Just below those arrows is a Device button and a Media button. The Device button changes the LCD to give you access to all of the remote controls for the device you want to adjust. The Media button lets you quickly access up to 12 channels, and you can store an icon/image/logo for each channel.
The rest of the buttons have labels that are a bit bigger and easier to read (and to understand).

Is there a good way to get reliable contacts?

Yes, I had that problem.
The best way to get reliable contacts is to call or email Harmony support, tell them the problem you're having, jump through their "try this, try that" hoops, and then have them send you the updated cradle.
Mine has worked perfectly since I got the updated cradle. I'm at work now so I can't give you the PIDs for the new vs old. I'll try to remember to do that when I get home.

Thanks Bernie - Your description + the image helps, and I'll take you up on your offer to ask another question. I'm trying to duplicate how I skipped commercials on my old DirecTivo on my new Moto 3416 DVR from Comcast, and I am hoping the 880 will allow me to do this. Basically, I want to program a button so that the first time I hit it, the 3416 will shift into double-speed fast forward mode, and the next time I hit the same button, it will simulate hitting the backward-skip button on the 3416 remote. So this involves programming 2 actions (FF button twice) on the first button press, and BACKWARD-SKIP on the next button press, in a continuous loop. The intent is to quickly and precisely skip commercials using one button, and after some practice, hopefully without looking at the remote.

When I had a Tivo I would also fast forward through ads like you do, but the unresponsiveness and unpredictability of the 3416 quickly put an end to that! I think you'll find that with this DVR the 30 second skip forwards and 15 second skip backwards will be far preferable. These functions were automatically mapped to the next and previous track buttons on the Harmony remote when I set up the cable activity.

I was going to make the same suggestions that rpete did, so I won't repeat them.
I also have a Tivo, a Series II, and my Tivo does not have any function like the one you described. My son had a Series 1. In both case hitting the fast forward button makes it go faster, and hitting it again makes it go still faster. Same for a third hit. There is a 10 second reverse button on the Tivo remotes, and the Harmony provides a similar function for the Motorola DVR's.

legierk 06-06-07, 07:43 PM OK. I give....I just added my new Onkyo reciever to my devices and reconfigured all my activities. Now, I'm trying to add the device Record Player so I can then add activity "Play Record" or "Phono". Please there must be a way.
Bottom line, I can't find a device remotely similiar to Phono. Do I just need to add a CD player then change the name????
Improvolone 06-06-07, 09:41 PM You can, alternativly you can set up a "Utility". However, doing this will mean there will be no icon available for your activity. I currently use the Utility application for my record player and 8-track player.
