In some older versions, some units eventually had problems making adequate contact to recharge. The problem has presumably been corrected in the newer versions which have two contacts instead of three and which have a magnet which secures the remote to the base.
(In any case, I would not think USB charging would be a good idea for most people/families. It would require access to the cable and access to a computer and be much more inconvenient. Unlike a PDA which many of us routinely connect to a computer for backup and/or synchronization purposes anyway.)
There are phone chargers that use that same USB jack like on my Razor, no pc required, just an outlet. The same port on the phone doubles as a usb jack for connnecting to a pc.
I prefer the software to the web site.
I was calling into Harmony Support last night to help with an issue (remote not connecting to web site)
Anyway, the tech I talked to said: "Well, let's update the software on your PC instead, the web site is going away and we are pushing everyone who calls to use the software instead." I said: "Really? Wow, that's going to make a lot of people upset." He asked "How so?" I said "Amost everyone prefers the web site interface as opposed to the software interface." He said, "Oh, well, the software has been re-done so it looks pretty much the same as the web site." I just laughed, and said, "OK, we'll see." I installed the software and it looks nothing like the web site interface.
He could not give me a date on when this would be happening, but he seemed to indicate that it would be this year.
Anyone else heard this?
7.3.2 still is a web interface of sorts except they have written the application to talk web protocols rather than use a browser. This is clear when your Internet connecton dies and you see that it's a web server it can't talk to. Still I much prefer 7.3.2 to the web interface.
I just mapped it to the LCD screen in the HR20 activity as well as the red, green, yellow, & blue buttons.

Problem is they appear on all backgrounds. Looks like the "One" fixes that with fancy button graphics for the LCD, like the 1000.
Well please let us (me) know how you resolve it. We will be switching to hdmi sometime later this year, when our a/v receiver is replaced by one that supports hdmi. If you do get this resolved I'll just save your answer for that time! ;)
A couple of points
1. You can add a function to say Go to Input Video 4 and then Next Input but according to an e-mail I got from Logitech they have to do that, you can't program that yourself
2. I decided to just make HDMI (which is basically Video 4 and then Next Input) just Video 4. Then for each activity that needed HDMI I added a command for the TV at the end of the sequence to send Next Input. I had to do it for all 4 sequences that use HDMI but once that was done, it works fine.
bernie33 01-09-08, 10:53 PM I have an 880 that only holds it's charge for a couple of days. However it always shows full charge after charging. I just put in on the cradle every night. I tried letting it discharge fully thinking that it might then charge more fully, but there was no change. I just got mine at Best Buy and it appears to be the older unit. No wonder it was cheaper.
I actually have no idea how long our 880 will hold a charge. We place it on the charger every night and usually when we turn the equipment off and leave the room. We've had the charger in two different locations, one near where we sit and one near the equipment, but we've done the same thing in both places. Primarily because that way we can always find the remote and we don't sit on it, etc., but also because that way we don't ever worry about it running down. Several other family members and friends have Harmonies and follow similar procedures so I don't think any of us could tell you how many days it would hold a charge. Of course I realize that what we do may not be convenient for your family or your environment.
stantonz71 01-10-08, 07:11 AM Ran in to a updating problem adding a dvr to existing settings.
Changed Xbox from game/tv hdmi input 1 to game/tv component 1.
Added dvr to cat/sat hdmi input 1.
When select watch tv(dvr) it switches to cat/sat but does not show hdmi and does not work. I switch the setting to game/tv and dvr works properly.
Select play game it switches to component 1 game/tv like it's supposed to but does not recieve signal.
I've done the assign imputs for the devices over and over. Their assigned
to the correct devices. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks bernie33, that's exactly what I'm going to do.
Has anyone figured out to page up/down on a Xbox 360? In my "Music" folder, I've got hundreds of albums listed, and it's a pain to go through them one at a time. If I use the xbox controller, I can use the right and left triggers to advance a page at a time, so I'd like to do the same thing with my 880.
I've added a media center pc device to see if that had a key that might work, but no luck.
Any ideas?

Try using your 'Channel Up and Down" button for moving a page at a time.

Agreed. Although there are many different types of USB chargers that plug into an outlet as opposed to a computer (e.g. my RAZR had it, my Blackberry has one, my BT headset has one, etc., etc.), I know it sounds dumb, but if my wife and kids had to actually plug in the remote rather than setting it down on that blue circle, my remote would be dead all the time. The base charger is the only way to go imho.

Not to send folks into a tizzy, but just so you know (if you don't already), DirecTV is in the middle of a software update that is going to "relocate" the To Do List (from a button press perspective). So if you have a Sequence assigned to a Softkey for getting to the To Do List (e.g. List-->Yellow), it will be broken, and you'll need to create a new sequence to get to it. The kicker is that if you have VOD enabled, the new sequence to get to it is 6 KEYSTROKES LONG; which, as you know, is a Sequence problem.
There's quite a bit of chatter about this over at DBS Talk for more info.

Can the 880 be charged with the USB cable?
I don't believe it can.
SnellKrell 01-11-08, 04:06 PM No.
It can be powered though, just not charge it. I've had tech support tell me to remove the battery and force a reset and run the remote just connected to USB.

There is also the Add On for the Mozilla browser that allows you to put the functions you have set for your LCD screen in any order.
Before i discovered this, I had to remove and re-define every LCD button each time I updated an activity. Either the web site or the PC software always insisted on putting the default buttons first on the LCD screen.

That works inside Media Center, but either selects an entry or kicks me back a level ("A" and "B" button functionality) when viewing Music or Videos on the Media tab.

Our JVC has 4 inputs, besides the HDMIs, and now that I think of it, I was able to get the remote to cycle all the way down the list of inputs (the HDMIs are last) but the problem was getting it to go back to input 1. And now that I have that fixed, maybe when I connect mine with HDMI it won't have the same problem as yours.

The trick is to find as many discrete codes as possible, even if your remote doesn't have them they might well exist for previous JVC models (as I did). Then for the inputs that are not in the database, you choose an anchor input. For me that is Video 4. So to get to HDMI (which is one step up from Video 4) it is just a matter of sending the discrete code for Video 4 and then NextInput. That is way better than having the Harmony trying to remember your last input selection and then cycle the appropriate number of times to get to the input you now want.

I know most know this, but I found you can move the LCD buttons but only if you kept them in the same device group. I tried several times to have one activity command first, then another activity and then the first activity's additional commands and it really screws everything up. You have to group all the activities commands together, but you can group them in the order you want. The feature is very nice compared to having to cut and paste everything to get them in the order you want.
I have had a logitech 880 for a year now with no problems, and suddenly yesterday it went dead. The remote is still functional and and see it send signals but no devices can be controller. I looked online and found out that my ir led could be dead. Has anybody else experienced dis and how did you guys fix it.

If you have a digital camera, you can check your IR LED. Just turn on the camera, look at the screen, then point the remote at the lens and watch the screen of the camera while you push a button on the remote. It will flash white on the screen if it's working.

I played with it this morning a lot and unless 2nd level support can program an IR code that simulates the RF code of the triggers, I don't think it will work. Maybe they can come up with something though.
Yea i tried that and i got no white light. I think i am going to try replacing the led before buying a new one.

Call tech support first, even if you think it might be out of warranty. They are usually very good with replacements.
If they won't replace it, I have read of someone who replaced the IR LEDs themselves...I think it might have been on the remotecentral.com forums. Have a search over there.
Edit: I found the thread at remotecentral
http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/mboard/rc-harmony/thread.cgi?keywords=5918&highlight=LED
One user replaced the LEDs with some from RadioShack and got it working. Another user got a replacement remote from Logitech, even though his was out of warranty.
jeff1967 01-12-08, 10:20 PM For some reason the discrete direct input for HDMI3/DVI in the Harmony database does not work. I have tried every direct input command for my set in the database and none will go direct to this input. Many will toggle and eventually get to it. All discrete codes work excellent for the other inputs on the set. I just started using this input so I need a code! Any suggestions?
Have the remote learn the code.

Call Harmony Tech Support BEFORE you crack it open. Yes, even if it's over a year old, as long as you're the original owner. At least see what they say and do. You can also complain "about all the trouble you had charging it and NOW THIS!" Worth a try, if you crack it open, maybe not so much...
jedi.master.dre 01-13-08, 04:00 AM Has anyone tried the Intec PS3 Remote Control G7721 as a blu-ray remote. I picked one up at Future Shop here in Canada for $20. It has only basic commands.
I am trying to get it to work with my Harmony 880 and so far I can't get the up/down/left/right to work.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

jeff1967 01-13-08, 08:42 AM Have the remote learn the code.
No can do. Unfortunately, my original remote only has a source and hdmi buttons which both just toggle through all inputs:confused:
You may need to increase the power on delay for your TV on my Sony I had t increase the power on delay to 7000 ms so that the TV was ready to receive input commands
AFMan916 01-14-08, 12:58 PM Just a quick question about my 880....sometimes when I switch from one activity to another, mainly from anything to Play PS3, if the TV is on it will be turned off. No other activities do this, and my Play PS3 activity is not set up any differently from the others (Play PS3 also turns the cable box on, yet it is not even listed as a device used).
Any ideas?
Thanks
Tim
Check the "turn off unused devices" option.

Then find the nearest direct input code to HDMI and set the Harmony to send that. Then in the activity that uses that input, add a Next Input command
OK, just got my 880 yesterday, so I'm new to it. Initial setup was easy, but I'm having an issue getting it to do something a little more complex. I have 2 activities set up that allow me to watch TV: watch TV and watch PVR. The main (only, I think) difference between the two is that with watch TV, I'm controlling the volume through the TV, but with watch PVR, I'm controlling the volume through my AV receiver. This is basically so that with just casual watching, I don't turn on the receiver and use the surround, but when getting serious for a movie or whatever, I get the better sound. Now, previously this required me to go to the advanced settings on my Scientific Atlanta 8300HD to change the audio out from HDMI (normal watching) to Digital Audio (surround receiver) and back again.
My question is, how can I get the 880 to do this for the appropriate activities? How can I make it switch the audio out on the cable box? I tried to set up a series of commands last night to get it to go to the advanced settings menu and make the proper moves and selection, but it seemed like the command selections in the 880 software weren't matching up correctly with the command sequence I enter on the 8300HD remote to accomplish the switch.
SaltiDawg 01-15-08, 09:48 AM Then find the nearest direct input code to HDMI and set the Harmony to send that. Then in the activity that uses that input, add a Next Input command
Great solution!
The Tivo's don't power off they go into "standby". They still record scheduled programs. I let my 880 make the HR10-250 go into "standby" on power off and its never been a problem.

Hi MitchBart -
I'm curious how you programmed the 880 to put the Tivo into Standby.
Thanks
tokerblue 01-15-08, 06:42 PM I'm curious how you programmed the 880 to put the Tivo into Standby.
- Adjust the Power settings for the Tivo. I don't have the HR10-250 any more since I upgraded to the HR20, but there was a button that sent the Stanby command. Try testing the various commands. You can use LiveTV for the PowerOn command.

I used to do the same thing. You have to enter a sequence of down/down/down/left/select/exit commands as you did. If it isn't working try adjusting the button delay speed. It was never 100% perfect and having to keep the remote pointed at the box for a long time was a pain.
I fixed it by buying a new TV with DD 5.1 HDMI inputs!

cra9eman 01-15-08, 07:33 PM I just got the 880 and have set everything up, but have one small problem. When I watch tv I use a certain picture mode on my television, and a different one for DVD, that is changed by just cycling through, pressing 'picture mode'. So ideally when I'm changing from TV to DVD, I want the remote to change the picture mode also. I set it up with the correct number of button presses in each respective activity to send off when leaving an activity. However when I hit power off on the remote it triggers the leaving activity button commands, thus screwing up the picture mode. Does anyone have an idea of a way to get this to work?

You need to pick one of your Activities (and corresponding picture mode) to be an "anchor". Probably "Watch TV" if this is your most common activity. Don't set any Activity Start or End commands for this activity.
For the "Watch DVD" activity, set Activity Start commands to change the picture mode from what you use in "Watch TV" to what you want for "Watch DVD".
Then set Activity End commands (for the "Watch DVD" Activity) to return the picture mode to the "Watch TV" activity (ie the "anchor").

Hmm that will work, although I'll have to remember to switch to 'watch tv' before powering down or the 'watch dvd' end activities will execute(changing the picture mode to TV, while staying on the DVD input on the television). I wish there was a way to set a custom command using the cycling structure they use to change inputs on the TV.

Besides the other suggestions that have been offered, I have a few more thoughts. The first is that there may be a command already in the database that will perform the action that you want without having to do the cycling. There are a lot of those commands in the Logitech database even though there is no such direct command on your original remote.
Second thought, which may be completely unreasonable, is whether you're really seeing benefit from switching between the two modes for watching TV (especially digital or HD TV) and DVD's. Not that you should change your behavior to accommodate the remote, but I have various viewing options for TV, movie, etc but I didn't see any advantage to changing modes when it was new and I was experimenting and we never do change modes. Much simpler for the family too. But that applies to my situation and may not to yours.
Third thought is to call Logitech and see if they have commands or another approach to accomplishing your goal. They are very good.
And finally, you can, of course use the Device mode on the Harmony to go through your original process. You can even put the cycle button on the first screen of your Watch TV Activity and your Watch DVD Activity so that you can easily cycle to the preferred mode without even having to go to Device mode. I've done that for my Audio system since it is the one that is most likely to wind up in the wrong mode occasionally.
Bernie

You don't need to select "Watch TV" before you select Off.
You are correct that the "Watch DVD" end sequence will execute, returning the picture mode to TV, but that is exactly what you want.
If, when you next use the system, you select "Watch TV", no extra commands will be sent (as there aren't any configured). Therefore the tv will stay on TV picture mode (because that's where it goes when you leave the "Watch DVD" activity). All is well.
On the other hand, if you select "Watch DVD" (from Off) the "Watch DVD" start sequence will be sent, which will change the picture mode from TV to DVD. All is as it should be again!
Basically what you are doing is making sure the picture mode is always in a known state (TV), If you select an activity other that TV, the state is changed on entering that activity (DVD) and changed back to TV when that activity ends.
I guess I'm doing a lousy job of explaining it, but I can assure you it works. I used to do a similar thing to change my DVD player's aspect ratio when switching between my old 4:3 TV and my 16:9 projector, and it worked really well.

This is what worked for me. Sharp Aquos TV, no function on the remote that came with the TV to choose a specific input, rather I had to cycle through them. The 880 had a command to go to a specific input, works great.
Beerstalker 01-16-08, 11:00 AM Cra9eman, glad you were able to get it working, but for future knowledge it usually helps if you include what TV make and model you are having problems with when you ask questions like these. Actually, you may still want to let us know, as there may be a better way of doing this depending on what TV you have. I know on my parents Hitachi 51F59 I was able to find discreet video inputs thanks to help on here, so I didn't have to scroll through the menu to select an input.
Babaganoosh 01-16-08, 11:22 AM I have a question: Does the Harmony have discrete codes for switching to a specific aspect ratio on the TV? I only know how to cycle through the various aspect modes: Full, Zoom, Cinema, Wide, 4:3. Is there a way to make it go to a specific one? Does this depend on the Harmony or on the TV? I'm sure that it depends on the TV. The Harmony remote only mimics what your TV remote can do. I've never seen a TV with anything other than a single "Aspect" button that cycles through the choices. However some people have had luck with some other features like inputs, so maybe. Anyone?
craig_wagner 01-16-08, 02:17 PM I have a question: Does the Harmony have discrete codes for switching to a specific aspect ratio on the TV? I only know how to cycle through the various aspect modes: Full, Zoom, Cinema, Wide, 4:3. Is there a way to make it go to a specific one? Does this depend on the Harmony or on the TV? (I have a Pioneer Elite Pro 1140HD)
It depends entirely on the TV (not the TV's remote, as a previous post mentioned). All any remote does it send a signal. If the recipient of that signal understands the signal, it will act on it. If not, it will ignore it.
I have a Pio PDP-6010FD and I've been unable to find any evidence of command codes that would set the aspect mode directly. As a result I have my activities send the aspect command a certain number of times upon entering the activity, then send it an appropriate number of times when exiting the activity to return the aspect to a 'known' state.

My TV, the SONY KDF-50E2000, doesn't have the descrete codes for the aspect modes on the remote, you have to cycle thru them just like you said. However, when the commands downloaded into the 880 from the database, it did have them. Most were named appropriately, but one was FULL_CAPTION that was the code for the FULL mode. It didn't have anything to do with captions. The harmony database also had the descretes for each input and many other features that could only be accessed thru the menu on the original remote.
What I did was put the 880 into device mode and went thru all the commands and noted which ones worked and which ones did nothing and found many useful descretes.
If that doesn't happen with your model TV, you could also try adding another TV of the same brand but of a different model # (maybe a higher end model) and see if it has them.
Worth a try anyway. I'm still going thru this trying to find a descrete to toggle CC, but haven't found one that works yet. When I get the time, I'll just call support and see what they can do.
Rob
Beerstalker 01-16-08, 02:33 PM It will depend on the TV like Blynott mentioned. I just logged into the software and added your TV model so I could look through the available IR commands. I did not see any other than the basic Aspect command. On some TVs you can select different aspect modes for different inputs, you may want to see if your TV allows that.
davidryder 01-17-08, 01:39 AM Ok I'm getting really fed up with this remote. I just downloaded the latest software for Vista and have the following devices:
Projector
Receiver
Computer
TV
PVR
Xbox 360
I've gone through everything and simply cannot find a way to customize what devices are used for what activity. For instance I can watch a DVD and use either the projector or 360. I've tried creating two separate activities but it forces me to use the 360 and I can't figure out how to change this. All roads lead to the extremely simple 5-ish step questionnaire.
No remote I've ever had has forced me to setting things up a particular way. It's a nice wizard, I just wish there was an advanced interface. I've had the remote for 6+ months with no problems but just got a projector and need a more advanced interface.
Another thing is the Next button. It has a popup ON the freaking button so if I get too close to it I inadvertently open a feedback window. A button on a button? This makes NO sense in any programming world.

Huh? I have two different DVD players in my setup and have set up two different activities so as to allow watching a DVD on each player. Instead of bad-mouthing the remote, give customer service a call and let us know afterwards what you were doing wrong.
Or learn how to use the software. Or get someone in the programming world to do it.

Bad-mouthing? Way to take my regards of a remote control to the extreme. Don't take it so personal, it's just a remote ;)
Would a 3rd-year student of computer engineering constitute someone in the programming world? Have YOU tried the most recent software on Vista (Just downloaded it last night)?
Lets do a step-by-step here:
Step 1:
http://phpstory.net/graphics/screenshot/SS-01.17.2008-09.02.02AM.jpg
Step 2:
http://phpstory.net/graphics/screenshot/SS-01.17.2008-09.04.58AM.png
Step 3: It appears it sent me to the add an activity function, but lets move forward and see if that's the case.
http://phpstory.net/graphics/screenshot/SS-01.17.2008-09.06.00AM.png
Step 4: I want to add my Computer to the activity "Watch a DVD". So far so good? BTW, I've tried other options like "Show presentation" thinking it needed computer-specific activities to add the computer to the activity.
http://phpstory.net/graphics/screenshot/SS-01.17.2008-09.07.34AM.png
Step 5: I thought for the sake of getting the computer on the activity I would use this option. However, I have tried all 3 options.
http://phpstory.net/graphics/screenshot/SS-01.17.2008-09.08.35AM.png
Step 6: It appears it wants me to setup the following activity
http://phpstory.net/graphics/screenshot/SS-01.17.2008-09.09.30AM.png
Step 7: Ok now it looks like after all that we are going to set up the following activity?
http://phpstory.net/graphics/screenshot/SS-01.17.2008-09.10.05AM.png
Step 8: So far so good it's asking me what devices do what.
http://phpstory.net/graphics/screenshot/SS-01.17.2008-09.10.50AM.png
Step 9:
http://phpstory.net/graphics/screenshot/SS-01.17.2008-09.11.28AM.png
davidryder 01-17-08, 09:28 AM Step 10:
http://phpstory.net/graphics/screenshot/SS-01.17.2008-09.12.11AM.png
Step 11: Great, so after going through the guide to setup an activity to use my computer, I get this. Computer isn't even listed.
http://phpstory.net/graphics/screenshot/SS-01.17.2008-09.12.37AM.png
That's problem #1.
Now after that guide is finished I get taken back to where I was before I decided to add an activity for the computer. So let's try the "Advanced" setup.
http://phpstory.net/graphics/screenshot/SS-01.17.2008-09.15.47AM.png
So this is advanced setup?
http://phpstory.net/graphics/screenshot/SS-01.17.2008-09.16.10AM.png
The only thing Advanced Setup accomplished was setting the power options for the computer. No offense but that didn't seem very advanced to me.
Ok, so I couldn't get that to work so I went over to activities and attempted to edit settings for my new activity. After clicking on settings I get this screen:
http://phpstory.net/graphics/screenshot/SS-01.17.2008-09.19.11AM.png
This screen looks very familiar. It is the identical screen that I saw after I attempted to add my computer to an activity but ended up setting a new activity up
http://phpstory.net/graphics/screenshot/SS-01.17.2008-09.19.46AM.png
I've gone through every combination of options but let's see what happens when I try to "Yes, but I want to add more control of options and devices for this Activity". This is the BEST screen I've run into:
http://phpstory.net/graphics/screenshot/SS-01.17.2008-09.22.07AM.png
So please, tell me what I'm doing wrong. I've had this remote for close to 8 months with no problems. I originally set it up on XP though.
Maverickster2 01-17-08, 09:43 AM If you want to customize the controls, go to customize buttons. If you want to add or remove commands or additional devices to the startup/shutdown sequence of the activity go through the process until you get to the second to last screen shot you have there (i.e. Review the Settings for this Activity); check "Yes, but I want to add more control of options and devices for this Activity"; at the next screen (your last screenshot), click add whatever devices you want to add and THEN remove whatever devices you want to remove and click "Save"; click "Next" through the next couple of pages and you will be brought to the "Custom Actions: Please Review the Actions for your Watch My Videos Activity" and voila, you should be able to also add additional commands to the startup/shutdown sequence.
No, it's not intuitive, but it is available.

Thanks for the quick response. I've tried both of those. My main concern isn't adding the computer. The only reason I even added the computer because I thought the software needed a replacement for a DVD player. I just want to take the 360 off there because it sets the menus up to control the 360.
http://phpstory.net/graphics/screenshot/SS-01.17.2008-09.54.35AM.jpg
This is what I don't understand:
http://phpstory.net/graphics/screenshot/SS-01.17.2008-09.59.10AM.jpg
I can add devices, but I can't remove them from either screen - on ANY activities I've setup. I thought that maybe the 360 was setup to always be on and maybe that's why I couldn't remove it, but then I checked and it was set to be turned off when not in use.
Maverickster2 01-17-08, 10:24 AM Well, in that case, I'd probably start from scratch with a generic activity. Don't do it through "Devices". Go to the "Activities" tab and click "Add an Activity" (or whatever it's called), click "manually add", click "utility" (I think), then select "generic activity". That will give you the greatest degree of flexibility to customize the activity. What some people don't realize is that the "pre-programmed" activities have requirements and limitations "built in" to them from the get go. For instance, any "watch DVD" activity will require a DVD player; or a "Listen to CD" activity in which a regular CD player is selected (as opposed to a jukebox) will not allow you to use the Media button to access individual CDs, etc. The "Generic" activity supposedly has no such "built in" requirements or limitations and will give you the greatest degree of flexibility to do whatever it is you want it to do.

davidryder 01-17-08, 10:46 AM Phew. Thanks for the help Mav.
I'm sure after you learn the ins and outs of this software everything may seem to make sense but it doesn't. The initial (basic) setup was extremely easy but after that nothing makes sense.
Even if they don't ever integrate an advanced setup interface, an in-program explanation of features should be. A "More info" or a popup notification onmouseover on N/A and unavailable options would be enough for me. I shouldn't have to seek customer service for seemingly simple tasks.
Anyway, thanks again Mav.
Maverickster2 01-17-08, 10:57 AM The software actually *does* make logical sense after you've messed with it long enough to understand what the engineers were trying to do and how they decided to do it (sort of like reverse engineering their system through trial and error). That said, you're absolutely right that until you've been through that process (multiple times, usually), it is seemingly illogical and is in no sense intuitive. They could certainly have done a better job setting it up for its primary audience (Joe Six Pack) and had a parallel "advanced" system for "us", but for whatever reason they didn't do it that way. What I can tell you is that if you can imagine it, the sofware probably allows you to do it; the challenge becomes figuring out how and where. Once you figure that out, by plodding through the "wizards" enough times to know what is where, it really is remarkably flexible and makes the remote do some truly cool things from an ease-of-use perspective. I look at it this way; the software is as difficult to use at first as the remote is easy to use. Since it's my wife's use of the remote that I'm primarily concerned with, the easier the better (and it does that very well); I can deal with the software.
Good luck!

scutzi128 01-17-08, 01:47 PM Just bought an 880 today, can't wait for it to arrive.

But that's not saying much is it? It performs the same functions as mostly any other remote on the market. The only reason the 880 got so popular to begin with is that it was a fairly cheap unit with an LCD display. Now that's not true any more.
The software is a relic that they haven't bothered to update to fall in line with the hardware. When the 880 was introduced you didn't even have an indication of where the buttons fell on the LCD, they only added the little graphic over a year later. Same with rearranging the buttons. The arrows didn't used to be there so you had to type and delete every entry individually to arrange the LCD. Macros? There were no Macros (even if they are limited now) for over a year when this device came out. Rearranging activities and devices on the screen "couldn't be done." TV Guide on the remote never appeared (despite selling it that way) ... and more.
It's flexibility lies only in giving basic results quickly, beyond that it runs out of potential quickly. Like those macro commands they added.

I agree with you somewhat. When they struck the macros from the sofware about this time last year (only to re-introduce them with a limited 5-keystroke max), that was a major mistake. And, yes, the software has undergone improvements (most notably in the last couple of iterations). And, yes, the sofware could CERTAINLY be easier to use (by both "beginner" and "advanced" users), but I'm not saying any different. All I'm saying is that all of the FUNCTIONALITY is there (albeit hidden in somewhat idiotic places in the software). That is, the problem with it is not that it won't do "X", it's with how and where it does "X". Once you can get ahold of the "how and where", it's not that difficult to use (although, again, it could be easier). And, to me, it's worth the aggravation of figuring out how to get it to do "X" (because it does do it) because it makes it extremely easy to use operate our HT system. Again, if programmed correctly, the remote itself is as easy and intuitive to use as the the sofware is difficult and counterintuitive, and I personally place a much higher emphasis on the former. And, to be frank, I think it does the former better than most other remotes out there, imho.

And then you go on to list all the updates.
Try programming a Pronto and see how long it takes for similar functionality.
The 880 is a difficult remote to program IMHO, especially when you have a number of components to control and they have to be managed at the same time to establish the correct viewing environment.
For example to watch BR movies on a PS3 I have to have the 880 do the following
1. Turn on the TV
2. Switch it to HDMI (this involves selecting a direct input and then issuing a next video input to get to HDMI since there are no discrete codes for the HDMI input)
3. Control my HDMI switcher to select the PS3 source (I have 2 other HDMI sources)
4. Turn on AVR and switch to digital input
5. Set the 880 in the activity to operate my Nyko Blue Wave remote for the PS3 and AVR for volume etc.
Manually turn on the PS3 :(
Now there are 3 remotes to worry about (TV, AVR and Nyko). But with the 880 everything is controlled by one remote. So while it took me a while to get this programmed, now it works, my wife and kids can do it without having to call me. This is worth the effort :)
22benjamin22 01-17-08, 04:35 PM Until I got to the end of that, my initial thought was "that would be such a pain with multiple remotes" Hahahaha.
Doesn't the PS3 start up automatically when you insert a BR disc? That would be required for that action anyway, so I'd think it's a non-issue.

The PS3 does turn on when you insert a BR disc. But turning it on with the BT controller also pairs the controller in case later the kids want to play games. Also might not necessarily want to watch a BR movie but media content on my Tversity server.

The more expensive of the two devices here turns the PS3 On/Off by IR. I have the less expensive one and am very happy with it.

davidryder 01-17-08, 06:50 PM The thing I like about this remote, regardless of the tricky interface, is the fact that you only have to press 'Help' and it will get things running. This is especially nice for the rest of the family. I would say I'm now close to an expert at setting the remote up but it took a few hours to get that way. But not getting anymore "I can't hear any sound" calls while I'm at work is a giant plus :D
And I would say that 75% of the owners of this remote only have to spend 10 minutes setting it up to run their entire HT so it's obviously not all bad. The remote itself is great, it just needs some serious improvement to the software - which may eventually come.
Ok I'm getting really fed up with this remote. .
Quite a different tone when you take some time to learn a little.

I agree, I gave my mother and my brother and family each a Harmony during the holidays, and all of them love that feature about it. They said it saved them from calling me to "fix" whatever was wrong.
Now THAT is a GREAT TIP! I have a new Sony AVR (3300ES) that doesn't touch HDMI signals (they are passed through clean) so there is no volume overlay on the TV. The family really needs the "volume bar" feedback - I never thought of this approach. VERY VERY CLEVER! Many thanks again!!!
Chris LeMasters
Can someone post the sequence on how to do this? I have a Denon 2308 AVR, Panasonic 5077U, and a DVR HR21-700. I use the Denon for all volume controls and it has OSD but I believe only for setup.

strutter 01-18-08, 10:38 AM its amazing how may people have come to this thread over the years ready to give up exclaiming how they hate the remote. and within a few post they love it and cant live without it.
I love this remote! It took me all of 10 minutes to set it up. And about another hour to "customize" the layout, buttons, etc. to exactly where I like.
Just some others, the best feeling is knowing my wife can watch all of her shows on the PVR and I can watch football in the other room without "setting up" the TV for her :D
Just another little post of joy. I bought a refurbished 880 on Woot a few months ago. 90 day warranty. I'm past that, but the old cradle charging problem started up. I called tech support, told her about my problem and that my other 880 with the magnetic base works perfectly. She set up an RMA and a new base is on the way. The remote itself is working fine.

I don't think that anyone has actually seen the database. You have to play a guessing game on how to enter your unit, one model number guess at a time.

I bought mine off Amazon at the end of Dec. and it was $149. I believe that is the current price as well, which I think makes it the cheapest. Dell was selling them for $129 right after the 1st, but that sale is over.

Paid $94 including tax and shipping new from Dell....about 1 year ago. I still feel good about that deal, even now. Got to keep an eye out and be patient.

I have an old Harmony remote that some of the buttons seem to be going out "Not Working at times" and am thinking of getting an 880. Like the fact of the color screen and that it can be charged rather than replacing batteries. However heard alot when it first came out about the problems with it sitting right on the cradle and not making a connection! Is this problem still apparent or have they resolved this issue? That is the main reason I went with the older unit when I bought mine year or two ago. Or should I wait for the newer Harmony One just looked at it and it looks like the button layout is much much better plus the touch screen looks nice less jumbled screen as well it appears. Thanks for any info..

As I am sure you know, if the 622/722 is not in Single Mode the PIP buttons have no function. This may explain why Logitech does not map these commands to a first tier button.

Awesome! Thanks so much!
The newer 880's (I got mine 2 weeks ago) have a magnet in the recharging base that holds the remote securely on the charging terminals.
samskiggiddy 01-20-08, 08:38 PM Question? How do you turn the LCD off completely unless you press the glow button. I am sick of pressing the volume up or down button and having to see that bright lcd screen while I am watching a movie. It would be great if I could just see the illuminated buttons and not the entire lcd screen. Thanks

- I'm not sure if you can. There are only two glow settings in the menu.

As discussed earlier in this thread. The PS/3 is a Bluetooth device. You need a device/dongle like you show to control it with any IR based universal remote, like the 880.

I want to buy an 880, when folks say "Just bought an 880 today, can't wait for it to arrive." is it possible to list:
1- price
2- where bought
I'm sure that the previous poster was really excited, would be nice to list a few details.
I bought it from ebay for $136 shipped. It arrived yesterday and it is awesome.
Hi folks, I have an 880 and have an issue with my Yamaha YSP-4000. It turns on all equipment perfectly for all activities. WHen I go to shut down though, the YSP powers down and then powers back up every time. I cannot figure out why? I have reprogrammed it a few times and nothing seems to make the YSP stay off. I always have to go into help or choose that device and manually turn it off. Any ideas?
I'm thinking that Amazon is selling 880 for 149, also Circuit City 149. There will most likely be a rebate coming soon for ?? 50$ so I'm holding out for 150 $ shipped? - 50$ rebate = 100$ shipped?
So untill then I'll use my three remotes!

This is just a guess, but I'd probably start by reducing the number of repeats set to the device. Read the first few posts in the Harmony Slow Response thread stickied at the top of the Remote Control Area forum for detailed instructions on how to do this.

For discussion of various possible solutions for IR solutions to the Blu-Ray "problem." http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=946674
Also, I have the less expensive version - $35 IIRC. It does everything except Power On and Power Off. Not an issue, in my mind, as inserting a DVD or BD turns the PS3 On and while over at the PS 3 to eject the disk I can turn it off myself.
Intec has a competing product as does Nyco ... In these cases one plugs the dongle into the PS3's USP Port and then you learn the accompanying remote's commands to your Harmony.
In the case of the above linked device you plug in in and tell the Harmony that the device is a PS3, and ignor the Harmony admonition that the PS3 won't control by IR. It does now!:)

That's what I gave for mine about a year ago with the $50 rebate, if you look around there is sales on them regularly.
bought my harmony from someone who got it from dell for $114 shipped. He didnt need it so he sold it to me practically brand new.
I have gotten it to set up everything, except I cant get it to turn on/off my XBOX for the life of me. It will do the up/down menu controls but it wont turn it on or off. I tried using a regular RCA code since people have said that's basically what the XBOX remote is. Can anyone help?
Sorry, forgot to quote orig. message - subject is using 880 with Dish Network DVR's
I've got a 522 and the remote works fine. Once you add the device you'll have a device profile. Create a watch TV activity. Edit the non-standard buttons to make it useful. In particular get rid of the frame advance.
For Additional Buttons I kept only "Aspect Ratio" (set on TV), "Program Search" (set up with a sequence), "What's Recorded" (ditto), "Record Timers" (ditto) and "View TV" (set up with Dish command "View") - to kill all onscreen menus and return to watch the show.
Please note the button names are ones I created, not ones on the remote.
Most all of the standard Dish remote control functions are available on the "standard" buttons setups and seem to work quite well. Once you learn the button locations, of course.
Good luck.
Has anyone had any success at getting Logitech to tell them how to actually backup/reload a configuration file?
I sent support a question and they got back to me telling me how to use the web interface to save the "configuration" file. I even found that once saved, you can force it to open with the appication and it prompts you to connect the remote.
Problem is when I look at the file, it appears to be an XML file containing commands to reconnect to the server and download the server's stored configuration. At least I see nothing in the file that would seem to relate to my actual configuration.
As this isn't actually a backup, was wondering if anyone else had any idea of how to do this?
Thanks

I bought mine for that price from Dell.ca during an after-Christmas sale. When I see that price again, I'll probably buy another one.

orcarola25 01-21-08, 06:15 PM Hello all,
I have an Onkyo TX-SR805 that is a preamp for an ATI amp. I was wondering if it was possible to set up the 12Volt trigger to turn the amp on when the receiver is turned on. I know you can program this command in but when I tried the first time nothing happened. I had the trigger cable hooked up to the Onkyo IR connector on the back of the receiver. There is a specific 12V trigger but it is for zone 2 on the receiver. I see no other 12V trigger outs on the back of the receiver. Any info. would be helpful. Thanks in advance!!!
SnellKrell 01-21-08, 06:23 PM Is your Harmony 880 able to turn your Onkyo receiver on?
If so, then your problem has nothing to do with your Harmony 880 remote control -
it's a situation where your Onkyo is not communicating with your ATI amp properly.
orcarola25 01-21-08, 06:36 PM Yes,
I am aware of that. I think it has something to do with the IR connection on the Onkyo. I think it is only usable with certain components. If that is the case, then I am very disappointed that Onkyo decided to do this.
In the logitech software, it allows me to add an activity that can send a 12Volt trigger to the amp. I figured that this command can force or trick the receiver to communicate with the amp.
I finally gave in and joined the ranks of 880 owners. This will replace my MX-700 which will probably end up on ebay after I duplicate the tasks it used to do for me :)
I downloaded the software to see if I can start configuring my setup even without the remote but I guess it needs the remote to be plugged in before I can do anything.
Try going in to device mode with the 360 and turning it on and off there
this is for the regular xbox, not the 360, it works my 360 just fine.
I've tried several different combinations for above device, but none seem to include softkeys for all/most functions. Anybody had success w/ a particular model number on Logitech's site.

The only way the Logitech/Harmony can initiate a 12v signal to the ATI is via the Onkyo. So, you've got to work with the Onkyo.
In looking at the Onkyo manual, you should be able to use any product that will accept the 12v signal. Here are some thoughts: first, carefully go over the instructions in the Onkyo manual. Second, make sure the cable between the Onkyo and the ATI that you are using for the 12v trigger is the correct one. Many times the jacks can be a problem - mono vs. stereo. Check the manual, or call Onkyo. Last ditch attempt to power up the ATI, use the switched AC outlet on the back of the Onkyo to turn the amp on and off.
Hope some of this helps.

Thanks a lot for the good information. I never thought to try to power up the ATI through the onkyo outlet. Great thoughts. I have been trying to contact onkyo but I have been on hold for 30 minutes at a time, but I will continue to try. Once again, thanks for your time, effort and information.

Sorry about that I totally misread that. The original Xbox does not have IR codes for power. It can only be powered on and off at the console. Sucks I know, been doing it for 5+ years now...
MordredKLB 01-22-08, 02:39 PM Is there any way to make the Harmony always execute certain discrete commands when hitting the power off button? My Sony TV's IR sensor is pretty crappy and often it doesn't turn off when I hit the power off button and hitting it again does nothing because the Harmony assumes it's already off. Most of my equipment has discrete codes and I'd love to force it to always send those commands when I power off.
Make a shut off activity.
MordredKLB 01-22-08, 03:22 PM For the Device, or the remote itself and where do you do that?

From the sounds of it you are not yet using the discrete on and off commands. If you go through set up again on your activities you will be able to set the power on options as having descrete on and off as apposed to power toggle. After you've done this (or if you've already done this), then set the repeats for the power off (and on if that's a problem too) to the max (I think is 5). That is found under device tab, troubleshooting, devices doesnt always respond to command (I don't remember the exact wording since its not in front of me). Hope this helps.

I believe the Help button works after hitting Off.

Thanks. I've been hearing mixed things and was afraid of this, but oh well.
As craig-wagner said, just press the "Help" button if something doesn't turn off. The first thing that happens when you press the "Help" button is that the Harmony re-sends ALL discretes for the current state (even Off), so you shouldn't need to go through the questions even.
Is there any better remote for $150 out there. This seems to be one of the few AV choices that appears to be a no-brainer. True?
MordredKLB 01-23-08, 12:59 AM I believe the Help button works after hitting Off.That is true, but my wife, mother and sister get confused/angry when I have to direct them to the help button. Don't ask me why.
I've increased the repeats from 3-5 and hopefully that will work better.

I think the remote is great but when you get into quite complex sequences and they fail for some reason (one device doesn't turn on, the input on the TV isn't right) then even if people press Help, if you are not au fait with how the unit works, as the programmer you are likely to get a tech support call :)
for someone who has the newer model with the magnet in the base...
What's on the matching side of the remote? Is it another magnet or what? They sent me a new base with the magnet, but I don't feel any "tug" from the magnet. They're telling me the remote hasn't changed at all, and the charging issue was fixed just by a change in the base.
Thanks!

true, the remote hasn't changed at all. there are still 3 contacts on the bottom of the remote. on the base the middle contact was replaced with a magnet. the magnet connects with the unused middle contact on the remote. mine works great.

Mine has another copper pin just like the outer 2 pins.
I don't feel a tug by the magnet either, but it fits well, beeps, and starts charging every time.

I am on my second base station and it still needed some fiddling to make a good contact. Gave up and dropped solder on each of the three contacts on the station to make them protrude a bit. Now the 880 always makes a good connection :)
So I just set up my favorite CH's and got all the icons in. Now when I go and hit the devices button and then select my favorite ch (i.e. 24) it will punch in 2, then 4, then it'll switch to 100 after.
Any ideas?
Normally favourite channels are in the activity. So in the Watch TV activity, you press Media and then the channel icons show up. If you have programmed them to send the right channel numbers for each icon, you shouldn't get spurious other commands getting sent.

thanks for the quick response. I figured it out so I deleted my post but didn't realize you quoted me already.
It turns out that my orig TV remote's "enter" button puts in 100. Wow, who designed that. So I just edited the enter button to be a dud.
Thanks though.

I'm guessing that you must have chosen the "numbers then enter" option for the "How do you select channels with your original remote?" question when you added the tv as a device.
HangEmHi 01-24-08, 12:49 PM Last night I added a PS3 to my AV stack. Though I obviously can't use my Harmony to turn it on and off, since using the PS3 does necessitate switching TV and AV receiver inputs, I created an activity to do that. However, while the AV receiver is included in the activity, the left side Volume +/- control does not control the volume.
Any ideas about how to make this work? I haven't yet had the chance to poke around and try and figure it out yet myself.

I'd just go into the activity, select the Change Behavior of Buttons option, and reassign the Vol +/- to be the receiver Volume +/-. Saves the time of walking through the whole wizard again.

Though I have the 890 I't hoping this is ok to ask since it applies to both. I have my components in a cabinet so must use the radio signals rather than IR.
I am finally breaking down and getting the DVR but dread learning to work the damn thing. I don't learn as fast as I used to, like 50 years ago.:o
Does the Harmony remote do a pretty good job with handling a DVR or should I just try and work some way to use the DVR with the remote that DirectTV supplies with it. I am sure there are a lot of buttons to punch on one remote when you add the recording and replaying features to the normal operation.
I have a DTV R20 now. It used to work on both IR and RF with one setting. I think when it was on RF. For some reason that just doesn't fly anymore.
Two questions. Is the use of the Harmony with Tivo awkward. And is the initial setup on the Harmony a ball buster?
Any and all help much, much appreciated.

I have a Dish 522 DVR. The Harmony works pretty well with it, but I did have to figure out a few things. Activities are the key to making things easy to use initially. I cleared most of the pre-loaded "Additional Buttons" and added some custom actions such as "set record timer", "show programs recorded", "program search", etc. Works well.

I had my old Harmony independently controlling two Dish 508 DVR's in the same room - each on a different IR Channel.
I now have a Dish 890 PRO controlling my Dish 622 Receiver. The Dish remote is pretty nice, but once you get used to it the Harmony 890 does a great job of controlling also.

When you setup the Activity, as I recall, there is a question about which device to use to control the volume. You should be able to go back into the Activity and tell it to use your AVR and that should take care of the problem. Same way you set it up for your Watch TV Activity.

The Harmony does a great job of controlling DVR's, including Tivos. I'd guess that most people that have a Harmony have a DVR included in their system. Everyone that I know that has a Harmony does have a DVR, and in many cases it is one of the justifications for buying a Harmony.

I have my Harmony 890 controlling my DirecTV HD DVR (HR20-700; but they all operate pretty much the same), and it works very well. Setup is, in fact, a bit of a ball buster, but if done right, the 890 will do just as much (and, in fact, more) than the stock DirecTV remote. Don't forget to create the colored buttons (R, G, Y, B) on the LCD Softkeys.
Good luck!

That's rather odd. When I got my 880 I had a Mits WD-62725 (62" DLP). It supported NetCommand (that's the Mits way of controlling multiple devices through the TV). The 880 worked perfectly fine with it.
FAiello 01-25-08, 12:49 PM I think you need to activate Netcommand go into another room and hold down the power button and enter 935 and see if that solves your problem

1. Do I add manual soft buttons to power it on/off, since it's not needed all the time.
2. If I add soft button to power tv on/off, will smart state still keep track of it?
3. Forget the above and duplicate my Activities with the Projector as display. If I do go this route, is there a way to 'copy' the existing Activities and modify it instead of going through the looooooong arduous process of answering yes or no and clicking buttons?
Since I only spent one hour with my 880 during my initial setup, I don't recall how to make specific changes. But, I am controlling my HD70 projector no problem.
If I recall, the setup asks you if you wish to use a TV or a projector.
I had no problems creating all my activities (DVD, TV, Wii) and the projector goes to ech independent input as required, no problems.
Yup, during my initial setup, I just pointed everything to the TV because I wasn't sure how I wanted to do the switching. Also, one thing I forgot to mention was I use a manual switch to send video to either the TV or the PJ.

Use method 3. 1 or 2 will give you problem with Smart State, and is too confusing. You can't copy activities, but it should only take 30 seconds to create a new one anyway, plus any button customization you want to do.
I was afraid the answer was NO on the copying activities.

The biggest problem I have is that I haven't found any way to print out the current configuration of an activity, and I usually completely redo the button layout. Even if I've already set the layout I want on another activity, it will still take a while to duplicate it on another activity.
Larry Hutchinson 01-26-08, 05:54 PM Here is an odd situation:
I just replaced my old Marantz AVR with a Denon AVR-3808CI. I created a new account for this.
Things seem OK except I can not make my Harmony 890 control the volume. Every other command I have tried works but even after trying to teach the vol up and vol down, I get nothing.
Edit: never mind. Pilot error. Too embarrassed to tell you what I was doing.

Any ideas?
At some point during Create an Event you were asked whether the Denon or the TV was used to control the audio volume.
Double check that.
Is there a way to tell the software to leave the video input switching alone? Also, I'd like to take over control of the projector power up and shutdown.
JayMan007 01-26-08, 10:09 PM Is there a way to tell the software to leave the video input switching alone?
Do you mean on the Display (TV)? I was wondering the same thing... Now that I have the Denon AVR3808, my display will stay on input 5, so no need for it to switch... as it causes a re negotiation of HDMI handshaking.
I did send Harmony an e-mail asking them to remove that command from the activities.

Creating a generic activity gives you an "I don't have to set the input..." option, so you can avoid video switching.

Agreed. While the inability to copy an activity may be no big deal to folks who don't do a lot in the way of customization, it's a REAL shortcoming of the software for those of us who do.

Yes, that's exactly my situation. My AVR does all the switching for me so there's no need to set the video input for display.
There's another suggestion in another post that I will try, generic activity. I'll give that a test drive.

I'm complaining about the inability to copy activities because this is my first setup, but I'm sure if you're a technically inclined user this feature would probably come in handy.
This has been heavily discussed before but I wish they'd make a not-so-dummy user version of the software for those who want to do things their own way and fast, and then do it over if it doesn't work.

The Harmony remotes should have the Setup command for the XA2. I have an A2 and an A30 and have no issues with using the Harmony to go into the Setup menu.
Weyland Yutani 01-28-08, 09:14 AM Harmony has a discrete "Speaker On/Off" toggle IR code for some Sony displays that they can add to your account if you ask.
I have a Sony XBR2 SXRD RPTV and sometimes want to listen to TV through the display's speakers and sometimes listen through the surround sound system. The easiest way for me to accomplish that with my setup would be a discrete "Speaker On/Off" toggle. On my display "muting" the TV causes the "Muting" symbol to stay on the screen indefinitely (apparently not true of all Sonys or even all XBR2's), and using the "Volume Up/Down" commands or drilling through the menu to get to the "Speaker On/Off" function seemed cumbersome to me, so I was looking for that discrete IR code for the Harmony 880 that would directly address the "Speaker On/Off" function. The "Speaker On/Off" function was not listed for my display in my Harmony account.
A search of this thread didn't reveal an answer specific to the XBR2, but I was able to find a post in the RPTV forum (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=920198) that mentioned a discrete IR code for the Sony A2000/2020 display and the Phillips Pronto that worked. That thread led to a list of discrete codes for Prontos and Sony TV's on Remotecentral (http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/files/rcfiles.cgi?area=pronto&db=discrete&br=sony&dv=television&fc=) that gave the hex code for the Phillps Pronto. I contacted Logitech Harmony support and sent them the hex code for the Pronto with a request for a similar discrete "Speaker On/Off" toggle for the Harmony 880. The same day (a Saturday no less) they added the "Speaker On/Off" toggle function to my account and it worked great with my display.
I guess the Logitech Harmony toggle doesn't work with all Sony TV's as discussed in several posts in the A3000 thread in the RPTV forum (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=12522349). In my search of this Harmony 880 thread I saw MizzouTiger's trouble finding a similar toggle for a Sony LCD display, and thought that posting my positive experience with my Sony XBR2 might be helpful to someone down the line.
Cheers

I did get an e-mail back from Harmony that they have removed the "change display input to #" from the activities requested.. I haven't updated my remote yet, but I'm not sure it will have any effect.
The biggest problem I have is that I haven't found any way to print out the current configuration of an activity, and I usually completely redo the button layout. Even if I've already set the layout I want on another activity, it will still take a while to duplicate it on another activity.
I just use the old fashioned method.
When I want to duplicate the button layout in another activity, I just step through each screen on the remote first and write down the current layout using pencil and paper.
I to still need to create the new activities, but this allows me to make sure I don't forget any buttons or enter them in the wrong order.
I finally got my remote setup the way I like it. I still need to iron out some kinks but it's doable for now. I still wish copying activities was available, it would have been so much faster.
Question: If I change the delay settings in Devices, that carries over to the Activities that the device is used in?

JoeMartinic 01-28-08, 10:19 PM Anyone know the correct input settings to get my 880 to switch to hdmi3 directly on my Samsung hl-t5687s? It will go to hdmi1 and hdmi2 fine, but not hdmi3. I have renames the ports on the tv, but that has not made a difference on the first 2 hdmi inputs. Also, is there any way to make the tv switch to an input where the device is not on? Just in case I have not turned it on before hitting the activity?
REDCELL 01-29-08, 10:19 PM Just wanted to drop public props to Logitech. My 880 has one of the "bad" bases and as a result of the fluky charger my screen stayed on and washed it out really bad. Called it in while under warranty and they just replaced everything...Whole new retail pack 880 is on its way with 2 day shipping. They dont even want the old one back...they just disable it from anymore updates.
Awesome customer service that is really lacking anymore.
Im happy to do business with a good company.
Just yesterday my Harmony 880 remote OFF button quit working. It will not turn off my TV or my DirecTV receiver. It has always worked before. Other functions for my remote still work for example I can turn the TV and the DirecTV on and control the DirecTV receiver and change channels but I just can not turn the TV off or the DirecTV receiver off with the 880. The only thing that has occur in the last few days was that my wife did spill some water on the table and the remote did get a little wet but she quickly dried it off.
HOW CAN I FIX THIS OFF PROBLEM WITH MY REMOTE?
Thanks for anybody's help with this annoying problem. :)

You could try updating the firmware. This also resets the remote and might fix the problem
hmcbean 01-30-08, 03:32 AM I am having a few problems with my Harmony 890 remote that maybe someone can help me with. Here goes:
1. I have added my Lutron Dimmer IR (MIR-600THW-) as a device and added that device to Watch TV, etc. The problem is whenever i start that activity it turns on the Lights automatically. Is there anyway to not have the activity automatically turn on the lights at start up? I really only want to have a button on the remote screen to control lights (lights on, off, dim etc)
2. I have a Onkyo Integra 9.8 Processor and the volume does not go up or down smoothly. when i hold the volume button down or up on the harmony, you can see that the Integra is receiving the signal but doesn't receive it constantly. In other words the remote sensor light on the integra goes on and off. If i use the Integra remote and hold the volume button down or up, the light on the Integra stays on until you remove your finger from the button.
3. My JVC DLA-RS1 projector will not turn off with the harmony. The JVC needs two commands to turn projector off. It apparently is only receiving one of them as the "Off' command comes up on the screen but the projector doesn't receive another "Off" command to turn it off.
thanks again guys,

I to still need to create the new activities, but this allows me to make sure I don't forget any buttons or enter them in the wrong order.
The problem with this method is that it's time consuming to run though all of that, write them down, and then re-enter them in the new "copied" activity. This process is made even longer if, like me, you have 4 pages worth of softkeys on a given activity (i.e. Watch DirecTV) and many of those consist of a 8 or 9 custom sequences (which also have to be re-done). All told, it has taken me between an hour and two to get an activity "manually" copied. It seems like it shouldn't be that tough for Logitech to modify the software to allow for copying. I just don't know why they won't do it.

Is there anyway to not have the activity automatically turn on the lights at start up? I really only want to have a button on the remote screen to control lights (lights on, off, dim etc)
I went into my TV device and created 4 new buttons to control the lights (dim up and down, and lights on and off). I used the lutron remote to teach them the IR codes for the buttons. Then I added those 4 buttons to every activity that uses the TV. Now whenever I watch TV, DVD, play X-box, etc, the 4 light control buttons I created are shown in the display.
If you wanted to be able to control the lights in activities that don't use the TV you could always do the same thing with your reciever, or any other device. I just did TV because I watch TV a lot without my reciever on, and I don't listen to music very often.

Go into the software and tell it that this device is not responding correctly. It will then ask you a few questions to try to help fix this problem. I'm not sure if this would be an inter key delay setting, or something else, but if you try a few different settings you should be able to get it figured out.

thanks again guys,
Again, go into the software and tell it that the remote is not controlling your projector correctly. Go into the power settings and it will have an option for your projector needing more than one command to turn it on and off. Make sure that it is set up with the right button presses, and enter a delay if needed.

This was happening with my Commercial Electric dimmer also, the only way I got around it was change the Device setting for the dimmer and told the system it that the remote does not have a power button. After that I added a "Lights" soft button for the power toggle in the Activity I wanted it to participate in.
Regarding your projector, If you go through the troubleshoot process and then you say you want to add more control over the activity, the very last page of that will make you 'review the actions' for your Activity. There is an option for when leaving the activity for you to issue additional commands to the device of your choice in this case, the projector. You can send another "off" button press.
I did not like this setup because if I made a mistake of clicking an Activity that does not involve the projector, it shuts it down and I don't feel comfortable turning it on and off.

How do you put in a delay. Does "None" create the delay?
You posted this 12 hours ago in a new thread and got good advice. You got water inside your remote due to carelessness. Try drying it out as was suggested and call Logitech. Sheesh.

Beerstalker 01-30-08, 08:06 PM I did a simalar thing by going into the power settings for a device and telling it my remote required multiple button presses to power off. That's what I was thinking, too. I know some of the cheaper receivers don't (I.e. Sony), but an HK -- you would think it would have this.

Can your original remote do this? If not you'll need to figure out a sequence/macro to go past what the original did.
Sdallnct 01-30-08, 10:29 PM I've got my 880 programmed well including with my lutron wireless light switch. Here is something I'm wondering if anyone has tried,

So can I set up custom settings in the HD70 and have the 880 switch between them depending on the source? Does that make sense?
Is anyone aware of a way to get the "set up favorite channels" option if you use a generic activity instead of the "watch my tv" activity?

It's doable. I'm not sure if your projector has discrete memory commands but if it does, setting it up would be simpler. My HD1000U has discrete codes for Memory1, 2, and 3 so if I wanted to set up what you're trying to accomplish.
Select the Activity you want > Troubleshoot > No, I want to change settings > Yes, but I want to add more control of options and devices for this Activity. > Save > then click through until you get to Please review the actions for your Activity.
This is where I add action for my projector, click Add, then Send this infrared Command: Memory1
I don't know if there's a quicker way to get to Custom Actions, but that's where you need to go to add your custom calibration.

You can program the 880 to do anything you want. You just have to figure out what the correct command sequence is to send. I have a Poineer plasma, and my 880 is programmed to send the A/V Selection command three times when entering the Play 360 or Play PS3 activity to set it to Game mode, and then send it again four times when exiting the activity to return the TV to the User mode.

When you go through a firmware update the last thing it does is restore your previous remote customization settings. You shouldn't loose anything.

You can only have 2 pages per Activity, but some people set up multiple "Watch TV" Activities and have different favorites in each.
For example, you could have a "Watch Sports" Activity, "Watch His TV", "Watch Her TV", or whatever

That's what I did to increase my capacity. The "One" has 24 favorites per activity. Better but still need multiple activities.

The default value that I currently see is 500ms. Anyone have any idea what the optimal inter-key delay time (ms value) should be?

Yes there are third party IR blasters for such a set up. I'm sure someone here or on RemoteCentral can help better than me. I had a customer who had such an arrangement.

You want one of these or something similar. Look for the 291 kit or something like it. I have one and it works great.

bigd480 02-05-08, 01:03 AM I just bought an 880 and it's receiving its initial charge.
Question 1, are there any known issues with these components and if you have any of them, were there any particular customizations you found necessary/useful? (particularly on the Yamaha, can search the rest)
Sony KDS-60A3000
Dish VIP 722
Yamaha RX-V795a
Phillips DVP5960
Question 2, regarding IR-controlled lighting - are there any dimmer products that can be controlled by the harmony to turn lights on at a preset level while still being able to adjust the light level via remote? If not I guess a just on/off would be good enough using a dimmer w/ a manual preset slider (for backlighting).
Thanks
I'm using the Harmony 880 to control my PS3 via the Nyko BluWave IR remote solution. The only problem I'm having right now is the lag time. From the time I enter a command using the 880, it seems to take a couple of seconds at least to respond. I've gone into the Troubleshoot menu and have executed the following steps:
Devices>PS3>Troubleshoot>PS3 is responding too slowly
The default value that I currently see is 500ms. Anyone have any idea what the optimal inter-key delay time (ms value) should be?
500ms works for me. I also have the 880 and the Nyko and it works just fine.
I have an 890 that I'd like to set up for multiple rooms. I'm trying to accomplish something and I'm trying to figure out how to use smartstate to my advantage.
I have a living room TV and a bedroom TV. I have an activity for living room and an activity for bedroom.
I have a Linux DVR (MythTV) which can output to either TV (but not both simultaneously)...I have an IR command that sets it to send to to the living room and another IR command that sets it to send to the bedroom.
I'd like the smart state to remember what state my DVR is in. (i.e. living room or bedroom state.) So if I was last watching the DVR in the living room and I go to watch it again in the living room, the reset IR command doesn't kick off. If I was last in the bedroom, the IR command to set it to the living room does kick off.
Adrian7724 02-06-08, 08:20 PM Hello,
I have 15 Bluray players at work and I wont to control them all with one remote. Can I do that with this? Is there a way to put in a custom name for each entry? Cause "Play DVD" isn't gonna work out too well when I have 15 of them...
sivartk 02-06-08, 08:23 PM You can rename each activity....but if any of your players share codes (which I'm sure they do since there aren't 15 manufacturers), the Harmony (like the manufacturers remote) may control more than one at the same time.
I'm assuming that you are joking, or do you have them hooked up to 15 19" HDTV LCD's :)
Allen1356 02-06-08, 08:37 PM I have added my Lutron Maestro Dimmer IR (MIR-600THW) and it works as it should when pausing (scene1); play (alloff) and stop (scene1).
I'd like to have the lights "allON" when I hit the OFF button and I'm leaving the room. I can then touch the wall switch on my way out of the room to turn lights out. I can't figure out how to do this.
Also, I would like to have Watch PVR also turn lights OFF. I am stumped and don't want to sleep on it any more.
If anyone could point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.

Nah, he's just personally trying AND succeeding to shift the balance from HD-DVD to BluRay. He has stock in Sony. He likes the color Blu.
Any other ideas?

You might have a few options...
You said "I have an IR command that sets it to send to to the living room and another IR command that sets it to send to the bedroom."
This makes it sound like there is a separate command for each zone (ie a discrete). If this is the case you can just add the appropriate discrete to each Activity start sequence. If it is in fact the same command (ie a toggle), then read on...
If you select "Re-do initial setup for this device", you might get an option to configure inputs for it. If you do, just configure the outputs as if they were inputs. I'm not sure if you get the option to configure inputs with all device types, so this might not be available...tech support may be able to do it also.
You could also use the Activity Start and End sequences to get the DVR back to a known state when you exit an activity. eg if you mainly have the output going to the living room, use this output as an "anchor". Don't add any output selection commands to living room Activities.
For every bedroom Activity, add an "Activity Start" command to set the output to "bedroom", and an "Activity End" command to return the output to "living room".
You set Activity Start and End commands by selecting "Review Activity setup" then "I want to add more control..."

I'm using the new Harmony One. I have a Lutron Maestro IR controlled dimmer for the eyeball lights over my fireplace. This dimmer is in the Harmony database. When I added it to my devices, these buttons were created:
All lights on
All lights off
Bright
Dim
Scene 1
The dimmer was labeled Light Controller by Harmony, but I changed it to Fireplace Lights (clever, huh?:D)
When I want to control the lights, I go to the devices screen and touch Fireplace Lights. The next screen displays the buttons I mentioned above. Touching the scene 1 button brings the lights on to my preset level, which I can then brighten or dim if I want. It is REALLY cool.
Again, this is with the Harmony One, but I would think it should work for the 880 also.

Quick questions. Need a response as soon as possible please.
When I set every component up to "stay on all the time", they still turn off because starting an activity "turns component on". Is there a way to create an activity and not include "dvd is on" etc.? What I want is to have all the components on all the time and just have the inputs change when selecting an activity.
THANKS!
I have an 890.
When I log into members.harmonyremote.com there is an option called "Select Room." When I click on it and select "Add or Remove Rooms" I have no option to actually add a second room. Does anyone else have this problem?

Would you not have to first add a second RF Wireless Extender?

Don't know one but two. In your activity go into settings and review settings. You can then add commands before and after an activity.
Is there any way to simulate nested activities? (perhaps by having a device key kick off another activity or change the LCD mapped keys, etc.)
What I'm trying to accomplish (without having 16 activities at the root level):
Living Room TV
--Watch TV via Tuner
--Watch Cable Box
--Watch DVR
--Watch DVD
Bedroom TV
--Watch TV via Tuner
--Watch Cable Box
--Watch DVR
--Watch DVD
Kitchen TV
--Watch TV via Tuner
--Watch Cable Box
--Watch DVR
--Watch DVD
Basement TV
--Watch TV via Tuner
--Watch Cable Box
--Watch DVR
--Watch DVD
Or is there at least a way to have an activity not change certain buttons. For instance, if I have "Watch Bedroom TV" change my volume +/- keys to point to the actual TV, and then when I hit "Watch DVR" it doesn't change the volume +/- keys, but instead leaves them at wherever they were before hitting "Watch DVR."
I used to be able to do this with my JP1 remote by having certain keys stay aimed at whatever they were before the activity changed.

Thanks Joe, IT WORKED. I had not seen that area before but it sure opens up some possibilities.

- Why not make a generic Activity and call it allON? You can program it to turn all the lights on.

Which Receiver (AVR) do you have?
Could it be that Harmony will allow configuration for different rooms or zones?
I have an 890 and didn't see that option until I upgraded my AVR.

Set the Power Options to "This device has no power buttons". The Harmony won't try to control the power at all then.

As far as I know, the 890 isn't really designed for multi-room use (apart from having multiple Activities as you mentioned, but they can't be nested). You need the 890 PRO for multi-room use like you are trying to do.
