beekeeper 10-11-08, 03:27 PM Interesting that the site now directs me to a new page. Guess they want to simplify things. I know I can reset it to got to my home page.
But.... I also changed my harmony button settings and got no update, so something is going on with the site. The harmony works fine but will not update. Keep the old button settings. Tried several times.

Even more interesting. When I went to my home page and checked settings, they were not changed! So I am sticking with the home page for updates. Something is wrong with the new interface.
Amazon is now running some refurbished 880s which I took advantage of. I had the One but returned it because I didn't like the touch screen and it was an impulse buy. lol The $99 refurbished price should keep me happy for now.
I should be able to transfer all my activities from One to the 880 right?
Thanks!

Devices transfer better than activities. Besides, you're going down, it won't really do that well at all. Just rebuild the activities.

Way back when it was easy to do, but now call logitec and they will do the shift. I did it when I got a 550 for backup and they transferred everything with no problems.
To all 880 owners who bought theirs as a refurbished item from Amazon last year, how are they holding up? I know it only carries a 3 month warranty but has anyone received helped after the 3 months?
After reading more about both the One and the 880 I'm not sure if I should just keep the One over the 880 in terms of reliability and warranty.
Thanks!
My own personal experience but I have had a 880 for about 18 months now. It has worked perfectly since purchase with the only problem I have encountered being the less than 100% contact with the charging base. I fixed that as noted in an earlier post but dropping bits of solder on the contacts to raise their contact profile.
Another procedure I use is to wrap the remote in a a piece of plastic (Saran) wrap. It was my wife's idea so can't complain about aesthetics! I also cut a tiny piece out where the wrap covers the charging contacts so I can still charge it. This keeps the remote in pristine condition - very useful when you have kids with dirty hands!

Well, we all understand how busy you are. So I suggest that you get right on the phone to Logitech tech support and let them do all your work for you.
I am available for consultation if you can afford my rates.

Hey guys. I just bought the Nyko PS3 remote. Is there a place I can go to find out how to make it work on my harmony 880 so I can control my ps3 with the 880. I know it wont turn it on/off but thats ok
Thanks

The Nyko-Bluewave is a device in the Harmony database so you just add it. Just go to devices, select Game Console with DVD and Nyko is a device. Add it to the activity for watching BluRay
As you note the Nyko cannot turn on the PS3 but it can now turn it off with firmware 2.4 or better. This is because Sony added turn off to the XMB. So Harmony support added a power off macro which basically moves the cursor on the XMB left 5 times (will work if you are in Play Game or left of that, such as Watch Video) and then up twice, following by two X's (X on the controller).
I did that and it works well.

Awesome thanks. It works great now.
czwsecurity 10-23-08, 04:37 AM Well folks, I pulled the trigger on the Harmony 880 tonight after my Sony rmv2500 finally died. Thanx for all the reviews and tips in this thread that helped make my decision easy.
By the way, for anyone still on the fence about this remote, Amazon now has them refurbished for $69.95 with free shipping :)

dagger666 10-24-08, 10:02 AM One last thing, since logitech took over they no longer maintain their IR code database and it has fallen into complete shambles. If you try and add your TV, i.e. Samsung DLP HL-P4674, instead of seeing the TV and adding it as it would in the past when Harmony was running things... now you will get hundreds of TV's all with slight variations in the model number because users are making custom labels and have full access to add garbage to the master database, now you will see hLp4674, HLP-4674, Hpl4674, hlp46744, and so on... now because these are all inputted by users, 1/2 of the TV's don't work, the IR codes are wrong, they are missing commands, or have incorrect labels i.e. PowerToggle, PowerToggle1, PowerToggle2, PowerOff, PowerOn, PwrTgl1, PwrTgl2, Power, Pwr, Powr... etc... and you could spend hours trying to figure out how the frig' to turn on and off your TV... and every change to the remote is a solid 5 minute upload, verify, reboot process, then go test with TV, then come back, rinse, repeat.
Is all this true? Why don't the manufactures send them the codes for their remotes which would insure they work right.

Wow, prices change quickly. When I clicked on the link yesterday it was $199. Today they've lowered it to $79.99.
czwsecurity 10-27-08, 05:50 PM Your right, the price did go from 69.99 to 199.99 back to 79.99. Just as an fyi to everyone, I got the remote today refurbished from Amazon and it came with the new style charger with the magnet in the middle so there shouldnt be anymore of the old charging issues.
Dick Laurent 10-27-08, 10:38 PM Well, I've been perusing here for a while, thought I'd jump in and give the re-furb a try. Out of the box:
"Exit" button doesn't work unless I press REALLY hard
"Play" button has to be pressed approx. three times to get it to work
"Menu" and surrounding buttons squeak horribly, just by light touch alone
I love my 628, but this...unless all of these problems are normal, I don't think I'll be trying out new Harmony's anytime soon. I hope this helps with any decisions still pending for purchase. Total bomb for me.
Looks like you got a lemon. I would just send it back and get another. I have had my 880 for over a year now and it's used daily. I have never experienced the problems you're describing and it could hardly be called in pristine condition now.

Should be no problem at all to get a replacement that works properly. You probably even have two choices. You could notify Amazon, but you may do even better calling Logitech. When you have a unit that works properly you should be delighted.
Dick Laurent 10-28-08, 07:54 AM Great - thanks for the comments. I'll try giving Logitech a call.
In hind-sight, the answer (at least for me) seems obvious. I changed the power on for the HD-DVD to eject. And did the same for power off.
I tried a search but couldn't seem to get anywhere.
Anyone...How do you change the PowerOn on a player to Eject?
Thanks for any help.

Thanks for any help.
I'll give it a shot since no one else has replied. And I hope this is the question you were asking :) This is how I have my HD-DVD (Toshiba A2) set up. It uses the Eject command to power the unit on, and the Power Off command to turn it off.
In the DVD device menu:
Adjust power settings -> I want to turn this device off when not in use -> A button on the remote for On and a different button for Off -> I don't have the original remote, but I know the command that is used [select] Eject -> I don't have the original remote, but I know the command that is used [select] Power Off
rec head 11-03-08, 04:42 PM I'd just like to say that I've been using this remote for about a year and the longer I've had it the less I like it. The button layout stinks. The software gets every thing done but I think it could be a lot easier. Sure all the wizards can be helpful but I think they really sacrifice ease of use once you understand the "activity" method. I'd like to see a simple/wizard interface and an advanced option where you can view and change settings without having to answer a bunch of questions.
I'm using the remote with my PS3, and it's very slow. There's a noticeable delay between pressing the buttons and when the PS3 responds. How can I speed it up?

I've thoroughly enjoyed mine. YMMV
Unless you spend much more money on a remote there will be personal flaws in it. I'm pretty happy with mine with the $200 I spent on it.

I agree that the software leaves something to be desired once you've gotten the hang of it. The flip side is that after the initial set-up I rarely use the software unless I've purchased a new piece of equipment, which doesn't happen very often. I've been happy with the button layout, but that's why there's chocolate and vanilla. I'd suggest putting it on eBay and finding something you'll enjoy using.
sivartk 11-03-08, 06:41 PM I'm using the remote with my PS3, and it's very slow. There's a noticeable delay between pressing the buttons and when the PS3 responds. How can I speed it up?
Interkey delay...mine is only slower than the Bluetooth remote when you hold down a direction arrow. Otherwise it is about the same. (I'm using the IR receiver that blends into the unit (flat, small USB)).
rec head 11-03-08, 07:17 PM Yeah, it sucks. Want to sell it cheap?
I'm going to be giving it away.
I don't want to sound like I'm back pedaling but I like the features and thought it was great when I got it. I figured I'd get used to the button layout. It never happened. The software was easy to setup initially but as I really try to dial it in it's kind of a pain.

I have had mine for a couple of months now and a techy i'm not, But I really like it and my wife loves it too. I'm like you Gary I'd get his for my kids stuff.

How can you tell if the base has a magnet in it? I flipped mine over and didn't see anything, but I do feel something round under the sticker on the bottom?

The old base had 3 brass contacts. The new one two. The center piece is a magnet. We know how to test a magnet, right?

Yes, I think I know how to test a magnet-but trying two different metal items and neither pulled. I do have only two contacts on the base and the round thing on the bottom of the base under the sticker I presume is a magnet.
Yes the round center conductor on the base is the magnet. Try using a metal paper clip to test it.
Veloziraptor 11-08-08, 02:13 PM I am having trouble with mine after 2 years of use :(
For some reason the remote won't send the IR signal to my components anymore...anyone else have this problem before??
I can send it back to Harmony to fix it...but worried about how much it'll cost...or if I could fix it myself.
Anyone?
blazeblaze 11-08-08, 02:37 PM I can send it back to Harmony to fix it...but worried about how much it'll cost...or if I could fix it myself.
It may just be time to buy a new 880 (I've seen them for under $100)...or upgrade to the Harmony One (I've seen it for around $150). You could probably crack it open and tinker with it easily...but I know if mine stopped working...I would have to immediately order a new one and expedite the shippment. This remote has spoiled me.

Sticker? Covering the magnet?
For the record the magnet is the black thing between the two brass posts on the base.
Sticker? Covering the magnet?
It probably depends on where the sticker is.
If it is on the bottom of the charging cradle, I wouldn't think it has any effect.
If it is on the bottom of the remote itself, I would try removing it and see whether that works.
If you can't get it to charge, call Harmony Support. They can be reached at (866) 291-1505. Monday - Friday 9AM to 10PM EST and Saturday - Sunday 10AM to 5:30PM EST.
cccisdamac 11-12-08, 04:01 PM Well Im confused and was hoping you all could help me. Everytime I hit an activity from the tv being in the off position it will never switch to the correct input. It will always stay on the tv input I had previously. For example, if I was playing my 360 on hdmi and turn it off I come back to watch tv and press "watch tv" everything comes on, but the remote does not signal the tv to turn to the correct input and I have been having to go to the device button and hitting the tv and hitting tv video until its on the correct input. Any ideas on how to fix this?

When you setup your TV activity, and any other activity, you are asked what input your TV should be set to. Did you answer those questions correctly for each Activity? You can go back and tell the software you need to make adjustments and see how you have things set.
Have you tired using the Help button on the Harmony to get the TV to the correct input? Does that work? If not you will have to go back and adjust the setup for your TV. The exact procedure is going to depend on whether your TV had the ability to go directly to the correct input or whether it has to step through the inputs. The Harmony database has direct commands for many things even though they may not be on the remote that came with your TV.
If you aren't able to get it going pretty quickly yourself, rather than waste time, call Logitech. They're very good and they'll help you get things right.
Bernie
sivartk 11-12-08, 05:45 PM Sounds like to me it is sending the change input selection before the TV can accept it. Try setting up that delay and see if it helps. Should be under adjust settings for this activity (or something similar).

You need to increase the Power On delay for your TV. I had to increase mine to 8500ms thats 8 and 1/2 seconds before my TV would accept additional commands such as Input

I am pretty sure that programming a Harmony remote without an internet connect is not possible.
SnellKrell 11-13-08, 06:59 PM You have to log on to the Logitech/Harmony Web site - and that means an Internet connection!

If this is only happening on power up it is most likely an issue with timing.
Power On Delay
The Power On Delay is the amount of time that a device needs to “warm up” before receiving another command. For instance, when you turn on a device, you may notice that the device needs a certain amount of time before it can receive another command from the remote.
Example:
Every time I turn on my system with an Activity, my TV powers on but doesn’t go to the correct input. However, it does go to the correct input when switching between Activities when the TV is already on. The Help button fi xes it each time, but I don’t want to use the Help button every time.

Just a quick update... I started having problems with Vol Up and Arrow Up as well... so yesterday I finally called Logitech. The first thing we did over the phone was start the remote in "Safe Mode" and update the firmware. To my surprise, that actually fixed all of my button problems except for the "Exit" button. We did some more tests and determined that that button is failing. Logitech took my address and they are going to ship me a new remote. I already got the email instructions and everything.
I'm very impressed with their customer service. It's great they can stand by their product. And now I'll have my current remote as a back-up (though it will soon be disabled and won't be able to update). Thanks for everyone's suggestion for me to call Logitech.
darklion99 11-15-08, 07:56 PM I just received a refurb 880 from Amazon and have one question: I want to set up some favorite channels...is it possible to set up one button to cylce through a list of channels (that is, favorites), or do I have to program each channel on a different button (with up to 8 channels per page)?
Other than that, the set up was simple and everything is working great. Thanks for any help!

SnellKrell 11-15-08, 08:26 PM You program a maximum of 16 Favortie stations into 16 separate positions on the Web site.
That programming then equates to 8 different buttons - and two pages = a total of 16.
darklion99 11-15-08, 08:31 PM Thanks, Snell, that's what I thought! I appreciate your quick response.

No, I keep the old remote, but they de-activate it so that I cannot update it online. It will continue to work, but only with the current settings. It'll be a good back-up as long as I don't change any equipment or settings.

When you use the help button does it change the input? If so, I would try changing the order in which the units turn on. Have it turn on the TV first then the other devices so it waits even a little longer to change the input.

Well now its really messing up! it is wanting to switch to the input and i have all the inputs entered however i go from activity "watch tv" to activity "play 360" it doesnt go to the correct input. It is like it is try to cycle from the tv/cable input everytime instead of going from hdmi to cable
On my factory remote I press source and then it comes up cable, av2, s-video1, component1, hdmi1. That is the order it scrolls through on the factory remote. Now everytime I go from playing my 360 to watch tv it always goes to the wrong input! Can someone please help?
michaelhassler 11-19-08, 10:28 AM Have you tried reprogramming it? Just a suggestion, since that worked for my B&O remote. :) The only thing I needed to do was a simple reset and then just program the channels and such again, though it took some time with the last thing.

If the problem occurs when switching Activities, try increasing the Inter-Device delay for the TV
Beerstalker 11-19-08, 04:41 PM Does your Samsung TV accept Discreet input commands? That will make everything work much better.
Otherwise you need to make sure that the inputs are set up on the remote exactly like the menu that comes up on the TV so the remote knows how many times it has to cycle to switch between each input.
ghan_sri 11-20-08, 10:12 AM Has anyone used the 880 with the Yamaha receiver RX-V663? It does not have a single power button for turning on and off. It has a Standby for power off and Power for turning on.

Not with the Yamaha but I have a Sherwood AVR which has the same mode of operation - one button to power on, another for power off. In the 880 setup it asks you is there one button to power on/off or different ones. I just said different ones and from the database it knows what IR sequence to send.
Remember the 880 "knows" the power state of your devices. So when you press a key to begin a function, if it thinks the AVR is already on, it won't send any power sequence, if it thinks it's off, it will send the power on sequence and when you press all off, if it thinks the AVR is on, it sends the power off (or standby sequence)

I've got an RX-V1500, but all the Yamaha receivers basically work the same way (this is my third one and I've used the same code set for all of them).

If for some reason, both the power off and power on commands are not already in the database, you can always learn the commands from your original remote.

1brokebrother 11-20-08, 03:43 PM How do I program my Harmony 620/670 to SLOW dim the lights (leutron Maestro) when I enter any activity. Keep the lights off when I switch between activities and turn on the lights ON when I press the OFF button?.. and yes I already tried cust service.. he screwed it up worse than I did..
Nthstar 11-21-08, 01:15 PM I also had bought a 880 refurb and the tilt-light on function doesnt work and Logetech
will be sending me a new one.
I cant believe they told me just to throw the old one out. Thats a waste of a good remote just because the tilt light doesnt come on. Its a real shame.
It's probably not worth their while to process the return and then try to fix it to sell as refurbished. And anyway they apparently disable the serial # so while you can still use it, you can never update it again.
Is the 880 (or any rechargeable Harmony's) capable of using regular over-the-counter (AA, AAA, etc) rechargeable batteries or is it a manufacturer dedicated battery pack?
I get so tired of manufacturer's using the dedicated ones and then charging (pun intended) out the wazoo for a replacement.
Thanks for any response.

While the Harmony doesn't use standard AA AAA batteries, in fact the battery is the same as earlier model Nokia cellphones viz. the BLC-2.
When I had problems with the charging base and also a couple of Nokia phones that happened to use that battery, I used to charge a spare battery in the Nokia charger. I fixed the charger base myself but I know should the battery begin to fail I can find replacements on ebay pretty cheaply.

I don't have a Mac, but I don't use their program, I always use the web based tool (http://members.harmonyremote.com/) through firefox. Will still have to have the program installed as it calls it when you go to update your remote.
I would give that a try and see if it works.

If that doesn't work for you, you should be able to run Windows in a virtual machine on your MAC using either Parallels or Vmware to create the Windows environment.
I haven't tried using the Harmony software under either of these, since I still have an old machine running Vista. However, I have used both Parallels and Vmware to run the windows version of Quicken on my Macbook Pro.
Before anyone asks why I am not using the MAC version of Quicken, I have close to 10 years worth of investment data entered under the Windows version and Quicken makes it so complicated to transfer your data from one version of Quicken to another that I haven't gotten around to it yet.

1) Put it on a timer?
2) I've used whichever USB cord is available (I have a lot of them lying around) and it has worked fine with mine. (On older USB 1.1 YMMV)
I use my cord from my Digital Camera. The amount of electricity that the charging base uses is only pennies a year, even when the remotes is on the base it is only using pennies. With the cost of buying a timer, it would take many years before you would see any savings.

Not to mention that the timer would take electricity to work, especially those that spin. I had a kids nightlight on a timer because the light sensor stopped working, until I realized that the timer used more electricity than the little 4w bulb! If you want to save electricity put the cradle on a surge strip and turn it off when not in use. or unplug it.

AFIK there is no reason to run the batteries completely down before charging.
This is only necessary for NiCad batteries. From what I remember, the 880 uses Lithium Ion batteries.

I put my remote on the charger every night and haven't had a problem. You are correct that the battery 'memory' issues were with NiCd and to a lesser extent with NiMH. You are also correct that the 880 uses a Li-ion battery which is not susceptible to the memory effect at all. In fact, according to this article (http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm)...
A lithium-ion battery provides 300-500 discharge/charge cycles. The battery prefers a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided when possible. Instead, charge the battery more often or use a larger battery. There is no concern of memory when applying unscheduled charges.

Agreed. I've been going nearly three years on my 890 with the same battery. I always place the remote in the cradle when not in use.
Spare batteries are pretty cheap too - < $10 on ebay
Is there a way for me to check the logitech database to see if my integra research receiver 6.5 is in there?
Thinking of finally getting a remote but would be a waste if the remote cannot be used with my reeceiver.
Also I have both a panasonic dvd player & a panasonic dvdr recorder & have set the dvdr to use a different code than the dvd player. Can the 880 recognize both & or would it either use the same remote code for both items instead of separate codes for the dvd & dvdr.
I also have an old philips 880 cd recorder & if the 880 can recognize, fine; if not no problem as it is just being used for recording webradio music for use in the car.

Just checked; it's in there. In fact, your model number is used as the example given for properly entering the model number. Not entirely sure on your DVD player / recorder issue, but you should be fine. Even if the database didn't have the codes, you could contact Logitech and they would get it going for you. Their customer service is amazing. As for the Philips 880, I only looked briefly and did not see it. Are you sure the model number is 880, like the remote? You could always learn the commands, but it probably is in there under something. Again, Logitech will take care of you.

SnellKrell 11-27-08, 08:34 AM Even if a specific component is not part of the Logitech/Harmony data base, you can teach your new remote all the IR signals necessary using the component's original remote.

The Harmony One is the newest remote from Harmony it has a few upgrades compared to the 880, but for $63 for the 880 you can't go wrong. I have 2 880 remotes and could not be happier.
Speedskater 11-29-08, 05:33 PM You can always check here: www.logitech.com/harmony/components (http://www.logitech.com/harmony/components)
This database still has the problem, that it makes you guess the model number! Most model numbers can be entered several ways (and similar models often use the same code). Harmony may have many profiles in the database for the same unit with the model # entered differently. Some of these profiles are better than others. But you have no way of seeing these options, other than playing athe guessing game of how other people may have entered the model #.
Jasper44 11-30-08, 06:19 PM I took the little box off the USB cable and it has magnets inside of it. What would the purpose of them be?
SnellKrell 11-30-08, 06:30 PM Yes, it's a ferrite core - placed on the USB cable to abate noise (contamination) in the signal between your computer and the 880.
Why would you remove it?
I guess because it's there!
It would be a good idea to put it back the way Logitech/Harmony intended.
There was a good reason for it being there.
Hi all - just installed a new media cabinet and am having problems with my 880 getting the signal to all the devices, some of the IR receivers are behind wood slats. Sometimes they get the signal, sometimes they do not, depends on where you are sitting in the room. I'm thinking of purchasing a Hot Link Pro Remote Control Booster System from Amazon, but wondered about devices getting a signal twice (if the Harmony happened to get through, and then the repeater did too) and if that would be a problem. anyone have experiance with this?

No. PS3's remote is Bluetooth. You would need an IR-to-Bluetooth adapter.
These exist, but it's one more thing to buy and hook up.
craig_wagner 12-03-08, 01:20 AM These exist, but it's one more thing to buy and hook up.
I picked up this unit (http://www.buy.com/prod/playstation-3-blu-wave-infrared-remote-by-nyko-nyko-blu-wave/q/loc/108/204823001.html). It's only $20, the remote sites in a drawer. As for hooking it up, you plug the dongle into the USB port and you're done. The hook up takes less time than getting into the clamshell packaging. It's also in Harmony's database, so you don't even have to learn from the provided remote.
The only thing it won't control is power, but I don't find that to be a big deal. If I'm watching a movie I need to go to the machine to slide a disc in, and if I'm playing a game I can power on/off the PS3 from the controller.

You want to create a "Watch DVD" Activity. The devices used will be the TV, AVR and HTPC.
Finally installed my 880 & things worked, so far, but did find that after turning equip on, I shouldn't place the 880 on the charger; the 880 forgot what it was doing previously.
Had to use my laptop to install the software as the install stalled on the desktop; am thinking that it was because I have the temp & tmp directory setup onto a different harddrive.
Anyway, is there a way to have a button setup to do the comcast dch-3416 "favorites" channel change as desired?

OK I followed the 'manual' option. Only I wish it was possible to actually select the devices to be used. Instead the application assumes from the activity templates which devices are included. For example, I followed the manual process based on 'Watch TV' to get it to use TV, PVR, AVR (since the HTPC is always on AVR source: DVD). Although I'm really only interested in the TV and AVR in this step, it appears I must just allow the remote to operate the PVR anyway. Is overkill, but if there are truly no manual options, I can deal w/ it.

I add an extra button on the top called PVR Power, then if I want to turn that on/off I press that. Or, I press devices, select PVR then press Power.
Hope that gives you some ideas.

Got my Logitech Harmony 880 the other day and i found an issue that will largely affect whether I keep it or not.
My Watch TV button does the following:
TV state is on
Receiver state is on
Cable box state is on
All other devices are off
Cable box is set to "Cable In"
TV is set to "HDMI 2"
Receiver is set to "Video 1"
Exit command is sent to the TV(had to do this because for some reason the "HDMI 2" label stuck on the screen)
The problem is that last night we watched Terminator Sarah Connor... and the volume on that show is very low so we turn the volume up to compensate. Then later in the evening I decided I wanted to watch TV and my girlfriend was sleeping in the bedroom. I hit the Watch TV button and the three items turned on but within a few seconds the speakers were incredibly loud(due to the setting from earlier) with the sound from the default cable box channel. I tried adjusting the sound but the activity was still running so it wouldn't let me...after the system was up and running and blasting sound it took a good 30 seconds for the activity to finish after which it finally allowed me to control the volume...
In addition it is quite annoying for the TV, Receiver, and Cable box be up and running and have to wait an additional 30 seconds for the commands to change inputs to be sent before I can control the TV. Is there any way to get the activity to finish faster? It powers on all three devices almost simultaneously...its the commands after that which appear to take quite a while.
Did I do something wrong in my setup?
Thanks in advance,
Aaron
FYI my setup is the following:
HL-S5686W DLP HDTV
Sony STR-DG500 Receiver
Explorer 8300HD DVR

The devices have various delays assigned to them that you can adjust, but it's not going to be instantaneous that the volume comes down, if you've left it very loud there will still be an initial blast of volume.
A couple of things you might try (in addition to adjusting the device timings):
See if your receiver supports preset/saved volume levels and include that as part of your startup
Put the receiver on mute as part of the startup and then adjust the volume afterwards. This is what I do for the activities on my system that involve the game consoles, because I'm often using those activities after my wife has gone to bed.

Just checked the delays and the TV has a 25000ms delay for Power-On...which is ridiculous(i lowered it to 4000 we will see how that works). The TV takes a second or two to turn on but it still receives and processes input selections before the screen is at full brightness.
My Receiver turns on and takes about 5-10 seconds before you can here a click and the sound comes on, this is how I prevented the loud sounds when I used my old remote(I would have 5-10 seconds to lower the volume before the "click"). I guess my goal is to have the remote finish the activity before the "click" so I can at least begin turning it down before the sound comes on. If that doesn't work then maybe I have to mute the receiver as the first step then un-mute the receiver as the last step(this way the remote is still useful in terms of a one touch system, the reason I purchased it in the first place)

Although I'm really only interested in the TV and AVR in this step, it appears I must just allow the remote to operate the PVR anyway. Is overkill, but if there are truly no manual options, I can deal w/ it.
No, you should not have to allow the 880 to operate the PVR when you are in an Activity that does not use it (does not include it).
While you can keep adjusting things and eventually you should get to the setup that you want for the Watch HTPC Activity or Watch DVD Activity (or whatever you choose to call it), it will probably be faster and less frustrating to just call Logitech and have them assist you in setting it up. They are very good and very thorough.

bernie33 12-04-08, 01:45 PM Finally installed my 880 & things worked, so far, but did find that after turning equip on, I shouldn't place the 880 on the charger; the 880 forgot what it was doing previously.
Had to use my laptop to install the software as the install stalled on the desktop; am thinking that it was because I have the temp & tmp directory setup onto a different harddrive.
Anyway, is there a way to have a button setup to do the comcast dch-3416 "favorites" channel change as desired?
The 880 should not be forgetting what Activity you're in nor the state of the devices when you put it back in the charger. When you take it off the charger it should show the Activity that you were in when you set it on the charger. If the last thing you did was to turn things off then when you remove it from the charger it will show the Activity selection screen.
If you have a way to do the "favorite channel thing" on your original remote then you can setup a button on the Harmony to do the same thing. Except for playing with it I never use that feature our 6416.
We do use the "Media" button on the 880 extensively though. It is really a "Favorites" button.

bgstewar 12-04-08, 01:58 PM Hi all-
Tried searching and couldn't find what I was looking for. Mainly, I've been tweaking this remote for almost a year to get it to work right with my PS3/Nyko IR dongle. I can get almost everything to work now (minus the massive delays in turning everything on, even after decreasing the delay) but I can't get the "OK" button on the 880 to work as the X button on the PS3 (or enter button, or whatever you want to call it).
I've tried and tried, and in my button mapping it says that the OK button is the X button, but everytime I press it, I just get the INFO that flashes up on the screen (e.g. video codec, audio codec, amount time relapsed, etc.)
Has anyone figured out how to do this correctly?

Did you make sure to change the OK button mapping in both the activity and the device mode? 99% of the time people forget to change them both.

Thanks a bunch. I bought a factory refurbished one last night with 20% off, from a US seller. Will cost me 60 bucks net once I get my money back from Microsoft. Sweet deal. Thanks again.
jsmiddleton4 12-05-08, 10:50 AM After a couple of hair pulling out days and not figuring out what is going on it appears Logitech changed the database for my Samsung 6189s RPTS inputs. Suddenly my HDMI1 was acting more like an inputnext. After testing all the inputs again it appears InputHDMI3V2 is HDMI1? What?
Come on Logitech.....
SaltiDawg 12-05-08, 01:51 PM I picked up this unit (http://www.buy.com/prod/playstation-3-blu-wave-infrared-remote-by-nyko-nyko-blu-wave/q/loc/108/204823001.html).
If you want a device that allows 100% control via Blu-Tooth and requires no connection to the PS3, try the IR4PS3. It receives IR from your Harmony and transmits the exact same Blu-tooth control signals that the Sony OEM PS3 Remote does.
sach1220 12-05-08, 03:03 PM I apologize in advance if this question is already answered. Does this remote support the old school way of training through IR port. If not can I set it up so that each page or set of pages represent one remote will all the buttons on that remote. I am not a big fan of the 'Activity' feature. If playing a DVD needs three button clicks, I'd rather click three buttons to have full control. Call me control freak if you like.

Yes, it can learn commands from other remotes.
However, if you aren't going to use the Activities there are many other, and less expensive, remotes out there that you will be happier with. You will be fighting the Harmony every step of the way and become very frustrated. You'll either return it or stop using it and get one of the others anyway.
A month or two ago there was someone else in this forum who insisted that he would only use the Device modes. It only took about a week for him to see the value of Activities for himself and his family.
jsmiddleton4 12-05-08, 03:31 PM I'm with bernie. Please feel free to program your devices and the Logitech remote will do so just fine. After about a week you might go ahead and try at least one activity just to see what they are like. You'll do one. Then you won't look back and you'll give up on the device mindset.
The Activity mindset is different and does take some getting used to. Many of us went down this same road. But once you get it, it is why the Harmonies are great remotes.
Activities are seemingly endless in what you can do with them.

And why would I spend more to get a refurb off ebay, than a new one at amazon? just so I could hope to get 25% back in the next 2 months? That just doesn't make too much sense in my book. However, If you want to do that go for it, to each his own. :)

While it seems like a very cool solution, I'll stick with my $20 outlay over the $70+ that the IR4PS3 would cost me. So far I haven't found anything I haven't been able to do using the Nyko. I know there are things it doesn't do, but those haven't been an issue for me.
P.S. the $70 figure comes from this post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1023735). $40 + $25 + shipping + power supply.

If you don't like the activity functionality, then stick to a $10 universal remote. I'm not being mean or anything, but the Harmony will upset you (I.e. does the work for you).
You can, however, customize the buttons for each activity so if you wanted no control over your volume, you can map the volume buttons to the DVD chapter up/down (or whatever). If you like pushing buttons to change the device that the remote is controlling at the moment, this is not for you.

Unless your Amp/Receiver has this option, there is no easy way of doing this easily aside from adding an number of Volume Up or Volume Down commands to either the start up or ending of an Activity

1. Yes the remote can be trained, BUT you must be online with Logi to do this.
2. You can just use the device mode for each one, it is a waste of the remotes capabilities.
I think you would be better suited to a macro type remote if you want to do the control thing.
Good luck

Airhead315 12-06-08, 06:30 PM Hey everyone perhaps someone can help me.
When I hit Watch TV in the activities list the system powers on my TV,Receiver, and Cable box, then it sets them to the correct inputs. My problem is that the Receiver powers on and begins playing sound about 5 seconds after it is turned on. The TV has a default of a 25 second power-on delay(its a DLP) which i changed to 8 seconds. Here is the problem, When we watch a show that requires our sound be turned up and we goto bed if we turn the TV on later that night or the next morning the sound is blaring loud and we cant stop it because the remote is still in the delay phase of setting up the inputs.
My first idea was to have the first command the remote sends be the mute command and then send the mute command again as the last command. Unfortunately I cant seem to figure out how to send a command to the receiver before the TV attempts to set the input(aka, it will wait the full 8 seconds before sending the mute command)
Here is the order of events I have in the activity settings:
TV on
PVR on
Receiver on
PVR set to Cable In
TV set to HDMI 2
Receiver set to Video 1
Receiver mute command is sent (cannot move up any further in the list since all others were done through the setup)
TV Exit command is sent (the TV input selection box wont go away otherwise)
Receiver mute command is sent
Order of events in real life:
All devices power on simultaneously
after a few seconds the receiver sound pops on with very loud sound that I cannot adjust because the remote is still executing the activity.
After 8 seconds the TV input is adjusted
The Reciever is Muted
The TV is sent the exit command
the Receiver is Un-Muted.
I need to be able to send the mute command to the receiver before the TV input selection. Does anyone know how to do this? Or any other suggestions that I can do?
One thought I had was to set the receiver to a bogus input(something i'm not using) in the setup portion and then send the receiver an input change command as the last command...
Ok I dont feel like searching threw 164 pages for one answer. I'm looking to control my lights in my living room, what product is the best for the logitech 880.

Turn the volume down before you turn off the activity prior to the 'blast'
See if your receive has a function which sets the power on volume (mine does and I love it...regardless of the last volume I had set, the power on volume is always low)

It would seem that any light that can be controlled via IR would work. Now if you have it in an activity or sequence, the light IR Receiver would need to be in the same line of sight as your other devices.
You can also use either X10 or Insteon switches or modules along with either the IR543 receiver for X10 or the IRLinc for Insteon

Another vote for getting a different remote. I personally don't understand why anyone would want to have to manually turn on the TV, set the input, turn on the A/V Receiver, set the input, and turn on the DVD player manually rather than pushing a single button, but if that's how you want to run your system you should look at a simply learning remote to do what you need. You can get them a whole lot cheaper than the 880.

Hi guys,
I have a couple of quick questions regarding the Blu-Wave remove for the PS3.
I tried to program a power off sequence now that the PS3 has a power off setting on the XMB; however, it seems that the sequences in the 880 are limited to just 5 commands (i.e. a macro) or am I missing something?
The other issue is can I setup the 880 to execute the sequences so that it will effectively shut off the PS3 as well as my other devices using the power off button.
Thanks and your help is greatly appreciated.

I don't think you can power off the PS3 using the Blu-Wave dongle. But...
A couple of firmware updates back, Sony (finally) put in an option to turn off the system after a preset amount of time if it is not used. What I've done is set that to 1 hour, and when I'm done, I power off everything with the Harmony, plug in my headset and controller to the PS3 via USB and walk away. 1 hour later, I'm asleep, everything is charged and the PS3 shuts off. Many birds killed... 1 stone. :D

Yes to both questions. I also encountered the 5 command limitation so called up Harmony support. They programmed a macros in that has more than 5 commands - something like
[LEFT] [LEFT] [LEFT][LEFT][LEFT][LEFT][LEFT][UP][UP][X][X]
whatever. Anyway it can shut down the PS3 from almost anywhere in the XMB. I think they just added the macro to the PS3 database for the Nyko device so if you were to delete the Nyko and add it back, you would get the power off sequence
And it works in conjunction with powering off all other devices - pretty cool
chitown_badger 12-08-08, 04:28 PM So I've got two tv's in the living room, and each is hooked up to a separate satellite receiver. We use the second TV/satellite when there are multiple games on and we want to watch both at the same time. This morning I had TV/sat 1 on and tried to also turn on tv/sat 2...well, the remote turned off everything on 1 and started everything on 2. Am I correct in assuming that the only way to really handle this is to leave sat 2 on all the time, and then the remote will power up tv 2 when I want to watch both? Or in that case will it just shut off all of 1 and again leave me with just the tv 2 components on?

Just create an activity to 'Watch 2 TV's'. If you are currently watching your main TV, it will know that, leave it on (when you change to 'Watch 2 TV's') and then turn on the other devices.

Im a newbie, so anything I say should be taken with a grain of salt.
However, I know that when you setup an activity you can setup things to do when you leave the activity. I would think that the remote would execute these commands when you hit the Off button since you are leaving the activity.
You could then add the sequence as something to do when you leave the Play a Game(or whatever you called it) activity.

Just create an activity to 'Watch 2 TV's'. If you are currently watching your main TV, it will know that, leave it on (when you change to 'Watch 2 TV's') and then turn on the other devices.
badger, I might also suggest that you add your most commonly used commands from the "other devices" to the 'Watch 2 TV's' activity suggested by sivartk. That way everything will be in the same place and you won't have to go into device mode to control those other devices.
By the way, I assume you either have different manufacturers of the TVs / satellite receivers in the same room, or you are using one of the separate IR ports on the wireless extender. Otherwise, when you turn off one TV or satellite receiver, the others would also go off - unless you have discrete on/off commands for the devices.

TVs are different, but both receivers are from dish network. I'll have to play around with the settings for Watch 2 TVs and see if I can make it work. As it stands, I have two separate "Watch TV" activities and that obviously isn't working. What I can't figure out is how to leave one on while starting another.

I am just guessing, since I use DirecTV not dish, but I suspect that you may also need to change settings on one of your dish receivers and one of your dish remotes to use a different command set.
Assuming that you can change the command set for one of your receivers, you would then need to learn that command set in your harmony device setup.

Hmm. I just looked again at my settings. I added the device Game Console with DVD, manufacturer Nyko, device Blue-Wave.
Went through Device Options, Adjust Power Settings, I Want to Turn it Off When Not In use, Different Button for On and Off (there is no on button of course), Don't Have Original Remote (choose any command for turn it on), and on the next screen, which button will turn it off, the macro created by Harmony was there (see screen below). I can't believe they just did it for me since it's in the device configuration. I did have to delete the device and add it back to get this new configuration though.

I'll give it a shot; However, can you clarify whether I can utilize the power off function if I don't set it to turn off when not in use; for example, can I utlize this option only when I want to turn off all devices similar to what the 880 does with the rest of my devices where the power off command turns off anything that is currently on?

Pretty sure you can. What it has done is add a Power Off function to the Nyko Bue-Wave which is equivalent to a Power Off function for the PS3. If you have the PS3 set to not turn off after the activity ends, then the Harmony won't send this sequence. This what I have. So when I press the power off button on the Harmony, it turns off everything including the PS3.
I was a bit worried with the distance between my PS3 and the AVR that I had to be careful in aiming the remote so that it could beam the signals to all devices. But it seems to work and I now forget about it and just note that the PS3 has turned off.
I tried this and I am not getting that page at all.
Hmm - I tried to add it to another account I have (different Harmony) and I didn't get it either. So it seems Harmony Tech Support have to add it to your account. That's not a big deal - just call them and explain the problem - it takes just a few minutes to add it. Just make sure they add sufficient LEFT commands to get you to the LHS of the XMB and then two UP and two X's (quote the example I posted).
Without their doing something the max number of repeats you can add yourself is 6.
delrmx01 12-09-08, 01:56 PM I've had the 880 for approximately 2 years now and I'm experiencing a small problem, which I'm sure will gradually turn into a big one. A few of the buttons are getting non-responsive when I press them-- I have to actually hold it down until the device accepts it. Any of the 880 users experience the same thing? Two years and buttons are somewhat failing -- that not good.
Hmm - I tried to add it to another account I have (different Harmony) and I didn't get it either. So it seems Harmony Tech Support have to add it to your account. I sent them an e-mail with the info, thanks.
Beerstalker 12-09-08, 04:10 PM One other thing to mention about that macro for shutting off the PS3. If you have more than one user on the PS3 you may need to add more up commands before the two X commands.
You can also ask them to add this Macro instead.
DirectionLeft Duration in milliseconds 1000
DirectionUp Duration in milliseconds 500
X
Pause for 500 milliseconds
X
It should work no matter how many users you have set up on your PS3. You can adjust the durations to make the left and up commands move as much as you need it to.
The problem that a user cannot overcome is that macros are maximum of 6 commands. Assuming you are watching videos, then you need at least 7 or 8 commands to shut off. 4 to get to the LHS of the XMB, 2 up and the two X's. The macros Harmony created for me will work from almost anywhere in the XMB for any user who's logged onto the PS3
Logitech just added the commands for my Harmony to turn off the PS3. I sent them and e-mail and got back to me on the same day, great service by them.

Isn't that great? They did it while I was on the phone with them. First time I didn't have enough [LEFT] commands and so next time they added a few more. Perhaps they should add it as a macro to the device to save others having to call?

Yeah, they should add it to the Nyko Blue-Wave database or something. I wish I can verify it working, but I have done all this from work, can't wait to get home and test it out.
I bought an IR4PS3 a few months ago, hooked up the receiver to my PS3 and downloaded the IR4PS3 command set into the 880. Works great, except:
Everyime I recharge the 880, I lose control of the PS3 and have to "reassign remote" on the PS3 and re-run Setup on the 880. Anyone else seen this (or not)?
1brokebrother 12-09-08, 07:59 PM The problem that a user cannot overcome is that macros are maximum of 6 commands. don't know about that..I just added all ten commands.. added the 1st 6 then clicked
"I don't have the remote" 4 more drop down windows appeared..worked like a charm... thanks :D
phdeane 12-09-08, 09:15 PM TVs are different, but both receivers are from dish network. I'll have to play around with the settings for Watch 2 TVs and see if I can make it work. As it stands, I have two separate "Watch TV" activities and that obviously isn't working. What I can't figure out is how to leave one on while starting another.
Oops - I bought my 890 so long ago and I'm always on the 880 forum (I don't think there is an 890 forum), that I forgot that the 880 doesn't come with the wireless extender, so disregard that part of my message.
The only way I see you can have two of the same devices in the same room with a remote that blasts IR is what BruceS suggested. As he said, though, you'll have to learn those 2nd Dish receiver commands, too. That assumes the Dish receivers have the ability to have separate codes. I had one years ago and it did.
Ichiu7,
Thanks for this tip.
I called logitech and they added the power off comand to my 880 while I was on the phone.
I used the following sequence:
Direction left (8x)
Direction up (3x)
X
Direction Down
X
With these directions no matter where you are in the menus it will turn the PS3 off.
**However, please note that you have to make sure you have stopped the disc or are not on PSN or using the browser for this to work. For example, if you were surfing the web and decided to watch some TV but forgot to exit the browser this command won't work as you have to be in the XMB for it to work; you also can't design around this because the Nyko doesn't have a dedicated stop command; it requires confirming that you want to stop/exit. That quibble aside this works great.
Also, I ran across another option in the BD player forum; the discussion didn't focus on this device but it looks like you could use the same methodology without having to get through to Logitech customer service (which was great I might add).

Yeah, Mine did turn into a much bigger problem. The volume and mute buttons became nearly inoperable, requiring several hard presses to get a response at all. It too was out of warranty but I emailed Logitech and they graciously sent a new 880, saying to just trash the old remote.
I have the new one and it works fine.

Hi guys,
Are discreet power on/off commands available for the following devices:
SA 8300HD
XBOX 360
Thanks.
Well, I tried the new PS3 power off command last night and it worked like a charm.
megalopav 12-10-08, 01:30 PM I just setup a VMC computer, with iMon IR receiver and this 880 harmony remote. During the setup, I typed in "Vista Media Center". I thought it would configure the appropriate buttons.
I'm not familiar with the VCM interface, but I don't like the ergonomics of selecting the activities button to navigate "Back". I tried navigating UP first then hitting LEFT hoping it would take me to the previous menu, but it didn't. It keeps me in the sub-menu.
Another kink, is that when I hit the Menu button(again, I'm not familiar with VMC so I don't know what the Menu button on a MCE remote should do) it attempts to load a DVD using the optical drive. I'm not too bright, but I don't think the Menu button should attempt to load a DVD.
What gives? Is there another auto-configuration name that I should use, because since I don't know the various functions/menu's of VMC, it would be difficult for me to manually config this remote.
Thanks
EDIT: Actually, I just stared at an image of one of the MCE remotes. What button on the remote supposed to take you a menu back?
http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/press/presspictures/PVR150MCE_PALboard+remote.jpg
Is it the button with the Arrow pointing left? the button between the D-Pad and the Volume controls? If not, what does this button do?
Hurricane_777 12-11-08, 03:36 PM Got an 880 refurb off of Amazon and I definitely have the battery issue. :( Tried the paper trick and even took the base apart to raise the contacts a bit and nothing. I hadn't seen many threads within the last year that mentioned this issue so I assumed it had been fixed. Looks like I got a dud!

Should be...I did wait a couple of weeks as I didn't have my new TV yet, I guess I was just hoping they would have worked this out by now.
Thumper2672 12-13-08, 02:07 PM I too picked up an 880 off of ebay, except my mine did not come with a power supply (I know, I know, but it was a bargain!). Can I use any 8v 500mA supply or do I have to get one from Logitech?

Sure, as long as the connector is the same, it is DC, and positive tip. You should be able to pick up a cheap universal power supply as it is pretty low power.
Thumper2672 12-13-08, 05:57 PM Thanks! I've been searching high and low today and the closest I could get was 7.5V. Headed back to ebay now.

Power supply? Are you meaning battery? Or the PS for the cradle?

Try Fry's, I got a 5v 2a odd power supply for 19.99...it has lots of options. (using it on a IP based KVM switch at work, the manufacture wanted $99 for one!)
They are over near the computer stuff on one of the 'oddities' rows of stuff...
Thumper2672 12-13-08, 10:35 PM The power supply for the cradle. And uwimage, I'm afraid we don't have Fry's in Richmond VA. Thanks though.

I'm not sure what I have to set my delays to, but I can never get to a different input after power off. Like if I was watching TV, turn off, then the next day want to start my Xbox 360, it won't send the input switch command. I've put a 13 second delay, but either that's too much or not enough. Any recommendations to try? I have a Mitsubish 65735 DLP.
Davird_Jr 12-14-08, 06:07 PM I picked up a new 880 from Amazon and I have to say the whole family loves this thing, especially my wife! The kids of course have no problem with it at all, even my 7 year old runs it like a pro. Not really much to the setup a reasonably handy/technical person can't handle. A little tweaking and this thing is really working fine. I did have to call CS for one issue. The number 1 key was not working. The solution - press harder. That worked!!:D Just had to break that one key in and now it works fine. Using it with DISH Sat, HDDVD, DVD, LAserdisc, VHS & Sammy plasma. Nothing but miles of smiles. Highly recommended. Can't believe this thing can sell for a hundred bucks. At that price it is a steal!!
Johnnycanal 12-15-08, 09:41 PM just drove cross country and as I was setting up my remote with the new setup I noticed the screen has major problems roughly 1/2 is black with some color streaks??
seems to be a software issue maybe?
any ideas what I can reload to make this work or do I plead with Harmony for a replacement. It is less than 6 months old and worked fine back on the west coast before we drove back east
could the cold weather have damaged the lcd screen?

Yep and it's even a bigger steal when you buy a factory refurbished 880 on eBay with cashback from Microsoft Live Search.

It's still a good deal, but not near as good as it used to be. They're down to 8% rebate now. When I bought a 120GB HD for my 360 I got 30% back. :-(
jim9251 12-16-08, 02:03 PM Just got a new one off ebay for $50.00. Easy set up, couldn't be happier. When I want to watch a Bluray I press BluRay, the player ejects which turns it on, my surround comes on and tv switches to the right hdmi input. Amazing with all one button. Have another button for watch HD-DVD and that controls my Toshiba HD player. Even programmed my favorite channels with my local station icons and HD icons. I've never seen a remote so easy to set up and do exactly what I want it to do. I'm very happy.
Panasonic 50" plasma

And this thing rocks. What can't it control?
I used to have Kenwood AVR that used strange frequencies for the IR remote. No universal could emulate it. But the 880 controlled it fine. It couldn't learn the codes but the Kenwood was in the database and the main controls were there.
The only things the 880 can't control are devices that use BT (the PS3 but then there are ways around that) and any device that uses RF for signalling (so get the 890)
sivartk 12-16-08, 11:52 PM And this thing rocks. What can't it control?

If your device uses RF for signaling, the 890 will only control the device if the device can still be set to use IR.
The 890 only uses a base unit which can receive RF signals and send out IR signals. The RF cannot send out the specific RF signals used by a device.

I stand corrected. I am sure there are RF universal devices out there - the 890 just isn't one of them I guess
Beerstalker 12-17-08, 01:55 PM Actually the 890 can control other RF devices if they use the Z-wave RF standard.
airfrancisco 12-17-08, 07:54 PM I have a question about this remote. I bought the remote awhile ago and I recently bought the infrared power plug for my lamp so this harmony can control it. Everything works well, but when turn off with harmony's off, it goes back to the activities screen so all the infrared commands are off. Is there a way to turn on the infrared without selecting activities? Let's say I walked into my room and want to turn on the light without turning on any activities.
Triaxtremec 12-18-08, 01:39 AM Well I finally had some time to get this thing going and I was completely let down. After messing with it for three hours it still won't change inputs properly. Anyone have any idea's? I was able to program my denon 2808 remote to do macro's easier than getting this to run properly.

You should try line of sight. Sometimes my remote doesn't change the inputs if I don't point it at devices. Some devices might not need line of sight, but some do need to.
If you did do point your remote toward the devices, you should have your harmony learn the commands of your other remote that changes inputs.

All you have to do is select the "Devices" button and then select your infrared powerplug from the list of devices. Now, all the Harmony buttons will control the infrared powerplug.
There are no Universal remotes that can control RF devices, as RF code is proprietary

Wow, this is a great idea. What kind of infared power plugs did you buy and where did you get them?

I tried adjusting it many times and still nothing. It works when I hit the help button to switch to the proper input but not when i first start the receiver.
All you have to do is select the "Devices" button and then select your infrared powerplug from the list of devices. Now, all the Harmony buttons will control the infrared powerplug.
Or you could create an activity that just turns on the lights without turning on any other device. Then in that activity all the controls would only work on the light IR sensors and when you pressed the main power off button, the lights would go off

Sounds like a timing problem, where the command is being set to the device before it is ready to accept the command.
You can experiment with that or you can call Harmony and they'll help. They're very good is you let them assist you.

That sounds like what it could be. My RP TV takes about 30s to warm up before it accepts commands. So I programmed a 30s delay into it before the 880 tries to change inputs etc. Of course if there isn't enough time and you use help and that works, it probably means by that time the TV has warmed up and is ready to received other commands.
Triaxtremec 12-18-08, 06:35 PM The tv turns on fine, its just that the receiver doesn't change to the proper inputs for the BD player or the Cable box.

Right. That is what we're trying to explain. After the TV turns on it has a delay before it can accept another command. They all do. On the Harmony you can set the delay between commands. It sounds like it is issuing the next command before your TV is able to accept it.
Rather than grow more and more frustrated, call Harmony and let them help you. They're very good and very patient. Allos enough time so that they can understand what equipment you have and what problem you're experiencing, and enough time for them to help you and for them to stay on the phone while you verify that everything is working correctly.

There are no RF remotes out there that control multiple RF controlled devices as each and every RF device uses a unique set of signals. The 890 and 890 PRO can control devices that are controlled by Z-wave RF signals only. (And of course it controls it own RF Wireless Extender(s.) ) :)
airfrancisco 12-20-08, 01:49 AM Wow, this is a great idea. What kind of infared power plugs did you buy and where did you get them?
It's the one from ebay, look under "infrared socket" in search function and you'll find it there. It works very well. I was able to power the socket from my remote with no problems.
With this model, every time you press a button, the display comes on for at least 5 seconds. I use my remote for PVR functions and press buttons very frequently. As a result, I have to charge my remote every other day. When I had a simple $20 remote before the 880, I could go for months without replacing the batteries by simply turning on the backlight only when I needed it, which was rarely since I could feel where all the buttons were without looking at the remote.
I want to extend display life and battery life of the 880. Incredible as it may sound, this expensive remote does not appear to let you to turn off the glow with every button press (from what I could gather, other lower end Harmony models like the 550 allow you to do this). Is there a workaround?

I just leave mine on the charger when not in use (I.e. overnight and when I'm not home) and haven't had any problems...get's charged every night.
The only way to preserve a little it to turn of the tilt sensor, at least it won't light up when you pick it up.

Personal preference to be sure but charging the 880 frequently is not an issue at all. I have two 880's and a One as well. I charge each of them whenever they need it. There is no discernible issues caused by this.
I'm not sure what the engineers were thinking when they designed this product. I mean, you've already got the tilt sensor and the manual backlight button to turn on the display. If you think about it, what is the most likely scenario when you need to turn on the light? That's right, when you need to look for the button in the dark. Once you have located the button, why would you want the display to turn on with every press of the button you have already got you finger on (in my case, the forward/backward skip buttons used to skip over commercials in PVR)? It just doesn't make logical sense.
Anyway, I may be overly concerned about the original issues with the display and battery lives. This model has been out for a few years now. Has anyone who owns one ever have to replace the battery because it no longer holds the charge, or the display due to burned out backlight?
Thanks for your input.
I'm having an issue which I have not seen discussed anywhere :
Remote works fine, programs, reads, etc, however it will not work further than 10 inches away from the device it controls!
I have to literally walk up to the device and almost hold it against it.
I used a digital camera to look at the remote and I do see the Leds light up when I do a command.
Anyone have a clue how I can figure out why it's doing this?

If your OEM remote for the device you're attempting to control works OK, you need a new 880. If, on the other hand, your OEM remote doesn't work well either, then it's something else in your system.

I had a similar problem - the remote would not work well with a couple of components stacked on top of each other in my cabinet but had no problem with the TV on top, the PS3 and other units in other parts of the cabinet. Then found the problem with those units also occurred with the original remotes so that eliminated the 880 as the problem. Problem turned out to be a rogue IR emitter. I had been using an IR re-transmitter that would enable to aim the 880 at one place and have the IR signals beamed to the units that were not working. The unit went faulty and was transmitting random IR pulses that were somehow interfering with the signals from the 880. Once I removed the emitter (a small pyramid like device) all was well.
I know it's the 880 because the OEM remotes work fine, what makes you say that I need a new remote, do you think the leds are burnt out?

I haven't really heard of anyone having a problem with the backlight.
I have had my 880 for around 2 years now (My parents and sister have had the 880s for around the same amount of time). None of us have had to replace a battery. I only charge mine when it gets low and I only have to charge it about once a month (It's used in my bedroom, so it doesn't get quite as much use as the Living Room Harmony One which I charge about once a week). I really wouldn't let battery charging issues keep you from buying this remote. Just make sure you have the latest charging base with the little magnet in between the two metal contacts.

I don't know about the LCD's burning out but if the battery won't hold a charge you can get a replacement for about $10 on ebay. They are the same as a Nokia BLB-2 cellphone battery.

That battery will work in the Harmony remote but it will not charge in the remote, you need to remove the battery and use a separate charger to charge it.

That's interesting since I had never tried to charge one in the Harmony. Your comment piqued my interest so I popped a BLB-2 in the Harmony. It was flat completely. Stuck the 880 on the base, the 880 restarted and then began to play the animation and the battery icon was a red outline. I left it there for about an hour but no charge accumulated. Not sure if it's because it won't charge or the battery is so flat. I can't see why the charging base won't charge the battery - the batteries look identical, down to the contacts.
2 years old; battery still fine. It gets a lot of DVR use so needs to charge every couple of weeks.

I must have missed that. Well my 880 battery is fine and if it dies I have a bunch of BLB-2's and an external charger I can use should it be required. I do see the BLB-2 has four contacts while the 880 battery has three. That's probably the issue.
I can't open the battery door on my 880 and I am afraid if I try any harder, I might damage it. Has anybody else had this problem?
Yes, I had some trouble with opening the cover; it wouldn't slide out if I simply applied friction. The trick is to press down on the cover where the notch is located while sliding the cover out. Hope this helps.
jmcging 12-25-08, 02:30 PM Gifting my MIL with my old 880 to handle her TV setup; addition of the digital TV converter is beyond what her current remote can handle and requires her to ahve 3 remotes which is way too much.
Adding a DTVPal Plus made by Echostar (Dish). In the Logitech database, I'm guessing the correct category is digital set top box but I can't find a specific model under echostar or dish that is the DTVPlus.
Hoping someone has an idea of either finding the box in the database or in a dish or echostar model that equates the right codes.

Also keep in mind the cover slides straight back while remaing flat against the back of the remote. The bottom end of the cover does not lift away from the remote.

Digital Set Top Box -> Dish Network -> DtvPal Plus
ehiggins 12-27-08, 09:25 PM Hi everyone, super long thread.
I've had my 880 for about a month now and I only have one gripe. I have a HK avr 247 and xbox 360.
When I hit play xbox 360, the avr turns on then the 360...but the 360 turns on too quickly so that the HDMI handshake doesn't give me surround sound. If I hit watch tv first and then hit play xbox 360 everything works fine.
I've tried different power on options is there a way to delay the startup of the xbox360 to a few seconds after the avr is powered up?
dagger666 12-28-08, 01:27 PM how do you search for devices? does anyone know if the Kentech Labs BR800-SV Home Theater Speaker System w/ Subwoofer is listed for the 880 and where i can find it listed under?

I don't think its your 360 that needs the delay..
I'm sure it's your display..The display always gets powered on last
activities>>>setting>>>power on.. change the sequence then add a 1 sec delay before your display powers on..
hope this helps
cccisdamac 12-28-08, 05:47 PM Hey guys I have a 880 and am trying to set up discrete input commands. On the original remote I toggled through all the inputs. However how do I get the remote to send the signal to go to that input and not toggle through every input. The problem with this is that it is going to the wrong input every time. I would like to be able to go to the activities tab and have it go to that input. Any help. I have been looking in the software and do not see anything about discrete programming. How do I do this in the software for logitech? Thanks.
