Hey guys I have a 880 and am trying to set up discrete input commands. On the original remote I toggled through all the inputs. However how do I get the remote to send the signal to go to that input and not toggle through every input. The problem with this is that it is going to the wrong input every time. I would like to be able to go to the activities tab and have it go to that input. Any help. I have been looking in the software and do not see anything about discrete programming. How do I do this in the software for logitech? Thanks.
This is probably one of the fiddliest parts of programming a Harmony remote. Many manufacturers do not have discrete codes for their inputs and as you have found out, you have to either
1. cycle through them
2. bring up a menu (on screen) and scroll to the right input and press Enter
The Harmony can handle both situations but you have to be careful in the programming.
If you're lucky you might find that while the OEM remote has no discrete codes there are discrete codes in the Harmony database. So try looking for your TV in the database and you could be lucky. For my JVC D-ILA TV, the OEM remote has no discrete codes but I found most of them in the Harmony database. The only code that wasn't there was for the second HDMI input so I just created a sequence that input the direct code for the first HDMI sequence and then sent "Input Next" to the TV to get to the second HDMI input.
cccisdamac 12-28-08, 06:08 PM Where do I find this database then input it into my remote?
I have looked all over the logitech site and am clueless. Any link or step by step would be great. I know it works bc logitech did it for me once and didnt explain it and now I got a Blueray player and it is all messed up again and my luck is that I am past the 60 days for phone support!
Try adding your TV to the Harmony. Use the manufacturer's name, then model and select a unit. The software might ask you to press power on/off buttons to see if it can match your remote with a TV in the database.
As for phone support having expired just do the e-mail thing. Cooincidentally I had a problem with my units not powering on in the order I want and I am also out of 60 days support. I just created an online problem incident and surprisingly, given it's Sunday, I got a response in 2 hours where they actually re-programmed my 880 to fix the problem. You could create an incident report, mention the actual TV make and model and what you're trying to do and they might be able to program it remotely. All you need to do then is update the remote.
termin8ted3148 12-28-08, 06:28 PM My 880 doesnt charge anymore unless i rubberband it to the cahrging base and mess around with it for a bit. half the time it stop charging 5 minutes later.
cccisdamac 12-28-08, 06:32 PM sent an email. Hopefully they can fix it on their end and then all I will have to do is update mine but can anyone help in the meantime?
I am having trouble with my 880 powering on all my units due to furniture placement and the size of my room. Is there a way or a device that can boost the 880's output so I dont have to point it directly at the unit?
nw newb 12-29-08, 08:10 AM It's there. I found it in a couple of minutes.
Digital Set Top Box -> Dish Network -> DtvPal Plus
This I don't get, When I add a device, I can pick from pull down menus the Digital Set Top Box, and Dish Network, but then the model field has no prelisted choices, requiring one to enter the model # manually. I typed in DtvPal Plus, and it does not work.

Yes, it is called the Harmony 890 :D. Sounds like you need an RF remote and not IR.
cccisdamac 12-29-08, 09:44 AM Just set them up in the logitech software and synced them to my remote. But where on my remote do I find all of the favorites with the pics I loaded? I push watch tv and in the upper right hand tab I see favs nad when I push it nothin happens. What am I doing wrong?
EDIT: just had to push the media button!
dagger666 12-29-08, 11:20 AM i don't think my 880 remote is updating. I made some changes to the setting for my dvd player like it doesn't have a power button and only holds 1 disc but the screen still shows 5 discs. My TV screen is only showing the aspect button but there should be more like inputs, sleep but none of them are showen. Updated the remote several times which it said updated OK but still no changes go through. I'm connecting through a blekin USB hub so could that be the problem.
Can someone tell me how I can use my 880 to control my PS3? I purchased the Nyko Blue Wave remote and plugged the compact USB IR receiver into one of the USB ports. The Nyko remote works fine but I cannot get the Logitech remote to control it.
Also, I am not having any luck getting the 880 to turn off my Sharp DT-510 projector. It requires the power button to be pushed twice.
I am wanting to use the remote to control the following. It works great on everything except the two mentioned above.
Onkyo TX-SR706 receiver
Sony PS3
DirecTV HD receiver
Roku Netflix receiver
Olevia 255TFHD TV (55" LCD)
SharpVision DT-510 hd projector
I just gave an 880 remote to a family member over the holidays since I loved mine so much.
I was trying to set up the remote for them but for some reason I cant find an option in the software I know I have used in the past on my own.
I am looking for the option that allows you to display favorites 1st before the soft menu appears, right after you click on watch tv activity. (It displays favorites without having to click media button to get there.).
I know this was an option in the past did they change or move this feature in the latest updates of the software?
Any help is appreciated I cant seem to find that feature anywhere. Thanks in advance.
dagger666 12-29-08, 04:12 PM oh i see now, i was looking for these button under activities and not under device. Now i see all the buttons mapped on the LCD screen under their device and found my soundbar listed under amps in software setup menu. I think i set up the right watch DVD activities right, turn on DVD player (which can't be done since no wireless power on), turn on TV, turn on Soundbar, turn off all other devices, turn on TV to Video1, Turn on Soundbar to cinema mode (surround). For watching TV, Turn on TV, Turn on TV set to tuner, turn on sound bar.

You connect your 880 to your computer. If you've ever installed the software a window will popup to allow you to setup (and modify) your 880. You may have to login using the id and password you set up originally. That is how it knows the current configuration of your 880. Then just add an Activity and answer the questions that the Wizard asks.
I purchased a factory refurbished Harmony 880 last week. I do have the charging problem but it is different from what i read here, i suspect it might be a real battery problem.
The battery i received with the remote came with only one bar, we place the remote on the cradle, i hear a single beep sound and see the screensaver on the remote but the battery remains at 1 bar after hours of charging. So, it is not a cradle problem. Also, if we take the battery off then install again, the remote does not turn itself on unless we connect it to a PC via USB.
I borrowed a Nokia BLB-2 battery from my friend with a Nokia phone. She charged the battery before giving it to me. I installed the battery and it worked fine with 3 bars, the remote would turn itself on without any problem when we moved it. Of course it can't be charged with the Nokia battery.
Do you think this would be a battery problem?
dagger666 12-30-08, 11:04 AM OK, now that i have the 880 semi programed and found the remotes listed under devices i must say this thing is pretty neat. One touch and my HDTV and Sound bar turn on or off, cool. Now the about programing help,
1) I setup watch DVD where the remote turns on my HDTV and Sound bar but doesn't set the TV to video 1 or turn on cinema mode on the sound bar. The DVD player doesn't have a wireless power on or off feature so i need to turn that on myself. The help function on the remote does fix the video 1 setting but doesn't remember it for the next time and the cinema mode thing I'm lost on. I'm pretty sure these all worked the first time a tried it but not now. How do i setup the remote to preform these functions?
2) If i set watch TV after watching a DVD the TV will turn on but go to video 2 and the sound bar works fine. My remote has a button that switches the HDTV to video1, video2, analog tuner, HDTV tuner. I want the TV always to turn the HDTV tuner on and forget about the analog one, How will i do this?
thanks

You have to add the Nyko to your 880. It's under from memory, Game Console with DVD. Then the Nyko Bluewave will be a choice under there.
There is also an option for the Nyko to turn off the PS3 but that cannot be programmed by you. You need to contact Harmony support to add the macro to your profile. But it works really well.
Also, I am not having any luck getting the 880 to turn off my Sharp DT-510 projector. It requires the power button to be pushed twice.
You need to go to the device options for the for the projector and choose Adjust Power Settings/Turn Off When Not in Use/Different button for on and off/My device needs more than one command to turn it off and choose Power Toggle for each command. You might also have to program a delay into those settings to allow the PJ to display the "Do you want to turn off the PJ" message and wait for the second signal

think i figured it all out myself but why does it keep thinking my Toshiba SD-KP19 portable DVD play can handle multiple disc. Just figured while the devices are shutting off after watching a dvd it needs to send the input command a few time to bring back too the digital tuner.

I doubt very much that it is a problem with your battery.
It sounds much more like the problem I had with my Harmony 890 and the charging cradle. When I placed the 890 on the cradle, a single beep was heard and the screensaver came on indicating that it should be charging, but it never did charge.
Whenever you want to charge your remote, follow these steps:
1. Dampen a Q-Tip and use it to clean all three contacts on the remote
2. Dampen the Q-Tip again and use it to clean all three contacts on the cradle
After you place the remote on the cradle, pay close attention to the display. It is not just a screen saver.
If the remote is actually being charged, the number of bars shown on the display will change. Mine alternates between one bar and three bars.
Before I discovered the Q-Tip method, often the only thing shown on the display was the single bar. Whenever that happened, the remote was never being charged.
You have to add the Nyko to your 880. It's under from memory, Game Console with DVD. Then the Nyko Bluewave will be a choice under there.

Thank you very much, hopefully I'll find time to make the adjustments this evening.

Since I had a spare cradle (the first one didn't charge) I went back to the one that didn't charge and dropped bits of solder on each contact, basically raising the level of each contact. Now my 880 charges every time I put it in the cradle.
Also agree - check that the screen saver is running, that when you put it on the cradle you hear a beep and not a second beep which means you have lost the connection.
clangro 12-30-08, 05:56 PM Does anyone ever have any problems with buttons requiring far more pressure then they should need in order to register a hit? My volume + button was only working when you really mashed it hard, so they sent me an RMA. Now the volume + works fine, but the 1 button has the same problem. I'm sure it is just a problem with a larger than normal gap between the button the the board and I was curious if anyone has any DIY fixes maybe.
Unusual activity here. I have a Panasonic TH-58PZ800U TV and a Yamaha YSP-4000 soundbar. Whenever I turn off either the TV or the Receiver (doesn't matter which order) it turns the other component off. This causes the 880 to send an extra power off signal to the Yamaha turning it back on each time. I cant delete it I need it for the power up sequence. I have tried the different delay settings up to 5 seconds and no go. It always turns on after shutting down. CHanging the order doesn't help. I think the HDMI connection somehow is telling the units to switch each other off. Any workarounds for this?
SOLUTION: Went into the Yamaha's HDMI settings and found something called HDMI control and turned it off. that did the trick, now the TV dont shut the receiver or vice versa.

I had a chance to play with the remote a little last night and followed your instructions. Everything now works perfect! I am not able to power on or off the PS3 but I did send Logitech an e-mail so hopefully they can upload the macro for me. Even if they don't I am still very happy with the way it is working.
Just wanted to let you know and take a second to say thanks!
Now, how do I change the pictures on the display for each activity? I have a game controller for my watch a movie option. :o
lleider 12-31-08, 07:39 AM Have a Sony SoundBar. Do I setup this device as an amplifier or as a receiver?

You won't be able to power on the PS3 with the Nyko remote and you won't be able to change the picture of the activity. I think you can turn the pictures off it the game controller picture bugs you.
MaximAvs 12-31-08, 01:13 PM So I noticed on Amazon, it shows the Harmony 880 with a different icon screen. Is there customizable icons now, or is this an old picture, or is this a different theme?!!

Coming from imageshack, clearly a user submitted image...I didn't find it on amazon (US). All the screenshots they had looked like my remote, nothing like this one.

The option to display Favorites first is only for the Harmony One the 880 does not have that option

You're welcome. Glad was able to help
As for changing the pictures for the activities, not sure you can. But if you have a game controller for watch my movie, then I think you selected the wrong template when creating that activity. I have a box of Popcorn showing for watch a movie (the PS3)
MeyersDVM 01-01-09, 08:59 AM Please forgive me if this has been addressed- I searched unsuccessfully for how to do it.
I just setup my 880 and so far so good. I would like to setup an activity to change the inputs on the tv and receiver when I want to play wii. I already have it set to do so when both are already off, but I would like to add an activity to do so when both are on, like when I have been watching tv already. I read that you can add a command to hit power toggle, but I would prefer to leave the devices on rather than power off and back on again.
Is this possible?
Thanks!

First you have to add the WII as a device, even though you can't control it. Then setup a Play Game Activity adding your TV and AV receiver if using one, and set the correct inputs for your TV and AV receiver. You will have to manually turn on your WII. If you change activities that already include your TV and AV receiver, then all that will happen is the inputs will change on both devices.
fst96se 01-01-09, 12:16 PM Ichiu7,
Thanks for this tip.
I called logitech and they added the power off comand to my 880 while I was on the phone.
I used the following sequence:
Direction left (8x)
Direction up (3x)
X
Direction Down
X
With these directions no matter where you are in the menus it will turn the PS3 off.
**However, please note that you have to make sure you have stopped the disc or are not on PSN or using the browser for this to work. For example, if you were surfing the web and decided to watch some TV but forgot to exit the browser this command won't work as you have to be in the XMB for it to work; you also can't design around this because the Nyko doesn't have a dedicated stop command; it requires confirming that you want to stop/exit. That quibble aside this works great.
Also, I ran across another option in the BD player forum; the discussion didn't focus on this device but it looks like you could use the same methodology without having to get through to Logitech customer service (which was great I might add).

I just called Harmony support, and they had never heard of doing this. When I asked them to add that macro to my account, they said I had to talk to level two support, and of they are closed today (New Years Day). So, I will have to see what else I can do.
fst96se 01-01-09, 12:40 PM don't know about that..I just added all ten commands.. added the 1st 6 then clicked
"I don't have the remote" 4 more drop down windows appeared..worked like a charm... thanks :D
This concerns adding the turn off macro for the Nyko BluWave remote for PS3.
How did you do that? Doesn't work for me. I still only get 6.

Thank you for your recent inquiry about your Harmony Remote
We are sorry to hear of the difficulties you have been experiencing. We have added the sequence for powering off your PS3 with the Nyko Blu-Wave adapter. Please update your remote to test these changes.
The sequence is as follows
"Direction Left" x 4
"Direction Up" x 2
"X" x 2
We apologize for the inconvenience and if we can assist any further please let us know.
I was about to quote my e-mail when you beat me to it. But for completeness this is what I got
Dear XXX,
Thank you for your recent inquiry about your Harmony Remote
I am sorry to hear that you have experienced some difficulties with your Harmony remote. For the Nyko Blu-wave remote, there is a certain sequence for turning off the PS3, we would like for you to see if that sequence actually works for the off command. The sequence is as follows:
DirectionLeft
DirectionLeft
DirectionLeft
DirectionLeft
DirectionUp
DirectionUp
X
X
Please let us know if this actual sequence works, if so we can program that sequence into your remote in order to turn off the PS3 device using your harmony remote.
It worked fine but I asked them to add one more DirectionLeft so that it would work from pretty much anywhere in the XMB.
Still it would be good if a user could program this rather than call TS>
Just got back on and updated my remote again. It will now turn the ps3 off. :)
jeffden 01-01-09, 07:04 PM I have been thinking about a way to get around the maximum of 6 commands trying to program the Power off macro.
As a quick temporary work around for those that haven't been able to get support to provide the macro for PS3 turn off.
I programmed a sequence into the Exit key of "direction left" X 4
I had already programmed the Power off sequence to perform a "direction left", "direction Up" X 2 and "X" X 2.
This gives me direction left X 5, direction up twice and X key twice.
So, When I am ready to power down, I hit Exit and then Power off. SO far, it has worked every time.
I will try telephone support again tomorrow and will ask for level 2 and see if they can give me the proper macro. Good thing it is a holiday and I have too much time on my hands.

How long did it take for it to show up in your settings? I called about an hour ago and they entered the macro, but I have since updated the remote twice to no avail. Hoping it comes on line soon.
On another note, I can't get this thing to control my Dish Vip722 at all. Nothing.

You didn't mention what TV you have, so that makes it harder for anyone to help.
If you start out with everything off and then you select the Activity without the home theater, does the TV come on with the correct input selected? If you start out with everything off and then you select the Activity with the home theater, does the TV come on with the correct input? That will give some insight into whether the Harmony knows how to switch inputs on your specific TV and whether you have things setup correctly.
By far the easiest approach to get things working correctly for you is probably to call Logitech support. They are very good. A lot of people received Harmony's for gifts so the call queues will be longer than normal for a while, but they will walk you through the proper setup for your environment and stay with you while you test it.

I'm really not sure how long it took since I did the request twice. I think they may have done it for the wrong account the first time. At the most it took a few days, at the least it took one day. I wish I could give you a better answer. :o

i have a sharp aquos 52". if i start with everything off, and select that activity w/ the HT, it will come on set to input 8 (which is correct), but if i turn everything off and then start the other activity, the tv still comes on at input 8.
bernie33 01-02-09, 11:19 PM i have a sharp aquos 52". if i start with everything off, and select that activity w/ the HT, it will come on set to input 8 (which is correct), but if i turn everything off and then start the other activity, the tv still comes on at input 8.
So now we know that the Harmony does not know that it should switch the inputs, OR it doesn't know how to correctly switch the inputs for your TV.
If you haven't already, you should review the setup for your non-HT activity and see if you've properly told it the input to select.
If you have the Activity setup correctly, you should review the setup for your TV. You'll want to look at the part where you told it how it can change inputs. Most sets have a menu driven approach to changing inputs, and the remote that came with your TV probably takes that approach. But many TV's also have a direct command that can be used, even though that command does not appear on the remote that came with the TV. The Harmony database does have those direct commands for many TV's. In the Harmony setup wizard for the TV it asks you about that.
Someone else here may have that TV and be able to say what worked for them.
If you've done all that and it still isn't working correctly, call Logitech. They will find a solution for you. Be sure you call when you have enough time to stay on the phone with them to work through the problem. They're very patient and very good.
Hope that helps.
Bernie

so i googled "sharp aquos harmony 880", and this seems to be a known problem (not sure if its known to Harmony, because this problem has existed for over 2 years now), but a fix has not been issued, but i was able to find a solution for the time being. thanks for the help.

Beerstalker 01-03-09, 04:21 PM For anyone using a Nyko BluWave or Schmartz PS3IR-X1 with their PS3, I would suggest you try getting Harmony to add the following power off macro.
DirectionLeft Duration in milliseconds 1000
DirectionUp Duration in milliseconds 500
X
Pause for 500 milliseconds
X
Direction Down
X
This has been tested and confirmed to work as a normal shutdown, and it also allows for shutdown after download completion.
You have to call/email Harmony support in order to get this shut down macro set up.

mav, unfortunately the site is not set up that way. as i am constantly updating the icon sets i do not have the time to update multiple .zip archives with the different icons.
however, you can select a large batch at a time and download multiple .zips of up to 48 icons each.
Have a Sony SoundBar. Do I setup this device as an amplifier or as a receiver?
As a receiver, it's in the database. Works well with mine (Sony HT-CT100)

Man, talk about a snooze-fest with regard to switching my Samsung LN46A650 TV. 13 second power-on delay? Brutal. I have finally got things working smoothly now where I don't have to hit 'help' after every "big change" (like powering off in Blu-Ray mode, then next day powering on to TV mode)... power-on delay 14 seconds, inter-device delay 1500ms. So by the time tv, AV receiver and another component turn on, I'm still standing there like an idiot, holding the remote pointed at everything.
Good for isometric exercise, I suppose, before I plant my *ss for several hours' TV viewing... hah.
More a problem with the TV than the remote. Love the remote in general. Just got my 65/70 year old parents set up with a 720 remote over the holidays. They love the one button control!

Why not hit the activity button and set the remote on the table (or arm of the chair) while you fluff up your pillows? That's what I do.

I've bumped up my delay to 14 seconds, but I've noticed many times the Harmony stops transmitting well before then, so I am constantly pressing help. The little indicator light that says it's sending the signal goes out a lot earlier than the startup delay. I've tried using the activity button on a flat service, pointed right at the TV, and not doing anything, but sure enough, it gives up sometimes.
Joe Warner 01-06-09, 09:55 AM I called Harmony Customer Support (Tech support Option) yesterday, and a message came on saying that phone support was only good for 60 days after registering your remote. The only support options after the 60 days was their WEB site support pages. I talked to one CS rep and he said this was only for the holidays and then back to normal phone support. Does anyone know the about this?

I have a JVC D-ILA set that requires almost 30s for warmup! Since there a spread between many components in my HT cabinet I have the Harmony turn on the AVR and media player first and then the TV. So I aim the remote at the other devices, see that they are turned on and then leave it pointing at the TV. About 30s later the TV comes on and then switches to the right input for the activity. That works pretty well for me.

Do you have anything queued up to download off the Marketplace, i.e. background downloading? The 360 will remain on until the downloads are complete then shut off. I haven't had any problems turning off my 360 via the harmony.
My 880 (2 years old) got electronic Alzheimers.
It keeps losing its programming. Updating the unit from the PC does not work yet when Logitech support tweaks the program and I update the unit it works??
This has happened 3 times with loss of various functions disappearing little by little like today when the lighting control options vanished.
Anyone had this problem?

do you have a wireless remote plugged in to charge? Even if you turn off the 360, if a remote (wireless) is plugged in, it will still proceed to charge the remote. You may have to unplug the remote.

I don't think it has anything to do with the remote. No matter how I turn mine off (with the exception of pushing the power button on the Xbox), it will do the same thing. (I don't have anything plugged in to charge on it either.)
Mine started doing the same thing after the NXE update. I'll finish playing and turn off the system with the controller, and it stays on for another 20-30 seconds with the power light blinking. (Like it does when you have a download queued up.)

Why do you need that power on delay? I have a Samsung LN52A860 with Dishnetwork going through an Onkyo Tx806 and everything powers up at the same time (or close) with no problems.
I just got a Samsung LN-37A550 and it requires a 13000ms Power On delay otherwise it will not set the correct input if it needs to be changed from the last input setting. If you are not changing inputs at power up then you can get by with a lesser setting, but if you need to change the input the next time your TV powers on from an all off state, it will not change to the correct input with a lesser setting♦.
mpkelley20 01-12-09, 11:17 AM Sorry about this post but I must rant a bit about how pissed I am at Harmony remotes.
I own two 880 remotes. Neither of them is the original one I bought as both needed to be replaced. The first one had the well known charging issue. It started off with difficulty in getting it to charge correctly on the base and then moved to zero charging. Logitech support had me do all the normal things to fix it but then just sent me a new remote since this problem was such an issue. They let me keep the broken, unchargeable remote...lucky me. Nice paper weight.
My second remote had the tilt sensor problem and that had to be replaced as well. Logitech took that one back from me. No paper weight in this case.
Now, fast forward about 14 months since the first one was replaced and guess what....it won't charge anymore. Won't charge on it own base or the other remote's base. I worked with support again on this to see if it can be rectified but, of course, it can't so it is now with the warranty department. My guess is that it won't be covered so I will either be forced to switch out batteries between my good remote and bad remote whenever I need to charge the battery (at least until the good remote starts to fail) or buy a new remote (definitley not a 880 model).
Anyone with good suggestions on a different remote that will still be working a year later?
craig_wagner 01-12-09, 01:18 PM Anyone with good suggestions on a different remote that will still be working a year later?
I've had my 880 for over a year and haven't had any problems with it.
You might want to look at the URC Consumer (http://www.universalremote.com/consumer/products.php) or URC Professional (http://www.universalremote.com/pro/products.php) line of remotes. I've seen some of their stuff in person and it definitely feels sturdier than the Harmony line. I really like the MX-810, but at $400 I can buy three or four 880s.

My guess is it WILL be covered, at least it was for me. Harmony support is nothing short of amazing, in my opinion, of course.
Stryker412 01-12-09, 03:05 PM Looks like I'm going to have to call Logitech too. My Harmony will not charge at all anymore no matter what position it's in the cradle.

They were great with me in the past when the remotes were within the 12 month warranty so I hope you are right. The replacement remote that I am having the issues with was replaced for me in November 2007 so it is technically outside of the 12 month period. I will post back here once I hear from the warranty deparment. I appreciate your vote of confidence in their support so I will try and stay positive. If it wasn't for this charging issue, I would love my remotes! That was why I bought two of them in the first place!

I had looked at earlier versions of their remotes before I bought the Harmony 880 and most of the reviews were extremely positive with the exception of needing a PHD to program them. If things don't get worked out with my 880, I will take a look and see if the newer Universal's are easier to program. Maybe a web based program like Harmony??!!

This may be a dumb question, but I get lost in the abbreviations occasionally, what is PHD?

mpkelley20 01-12-09, 04:11 PM That is the highest level college degree. Doctorate!
I guess my sarcasm wasn't as clear as I hoped...thanks for clarifying for me!
Funny thing about my comment, I worked with a guy who had his PHD in math and he bought a home theater system from Tweeter a few years back. They gave him a Universal brand remote already programmed to run everything. I went to his house for a party and he had added a few components to his system and he told me he was waiting for tweeter to come out and reprogram his remote for him! He had no idea how to do it himself.
So I guess even a PHD doesn't mean you can program the older models! Maybe that is why Harmony has been so sucessful since they use a more dummy proof web based program.
I think I read somewhere that Universal was coming out with a remote that used a PC based or web based program that was easier to use. Don't know for sure if there is one and hopefully will have no need to know if Logitech support can come through for me.
phdeane 01-12-09, 04:55 PM They were great with me in the past when the remotes were within the 12 month warranty so I hope you are right.
Sorry, I should have clarified that my remote was also out of the warranty - one time for the battery charging issue (they gave me a new cradle) and the other for a stuck button (they gave me a new remote sans cradle, of course).
I hope they haven't tightened their policy; I tout it often to others.

I think he means when he switches an activity, but I could be wrong....
LivingLargeInHD 01-12-09, 06:21 PM I could really use some help. I have the Samsung 46A650 with an 880, and for the life of me, because of the way the menu is, I cannot go from "watch TV" to "watch blu-ray" and go to the correct input without using the Help button. I have removed all unused inputs in the database, and I have the exact order correct. This is boggling my mind. Currently, it will skip over the input and cycle back to the top and end up on the incorrect input (like "TV"). I have played with the delays to no avail. Please advise how an "idiot" like myself can make my 880 work correctly with the inputs on the Samsung. By the way, I have Directv HR20-700, Onkyo 605 and a Panny BD30 for information sake. Help.....
Beerstalker 01-12-09, 06:44 PM First, did you check and make sure you don't have discreet input commands that work? They would be something like Input 1, HDMI 1, InputAV1, etc. Go into the screen for mapping your TV device and see if they are there. If they are add them to your soft buttons and update your remote so you can test them and see if they work.
If you don't have discreet commands then it is more difficult. You have to make sure that you have the inputs listed correctly and in the correct order which you seem to have done. You then have to make sure whether or not your TV skips inputs that are not receiving a video signal. You can check this yourself by turning everything off except your TV and using the inputnext command (or whatever command your TV uses to scroll through inputs). If your TV doesn't skip unused inputs then you most likely have an issue with either the Input Delay setting, or interkey delay setting for your TV. Try increasing those and see if it starts working. IF your TV does skip unused inputs then it becomes more difficult and I'm not sure how to get it working. You may have to contact Harmony support.

You were right...they are sending me a new remote! Kudos to Logitech for recognizing this charging issue and taking care of their customers! The only downside to it....I get to keep the old remote....another paper weight!
While we're on the topic of Samsung: I have created an activity for watching TV (the reason for creating the activity was so that I could add channel icons). The problem I have is when I switch the input to TV (using discrete input named "InputAntenna") the TV always selects channel 3. What I'd like to do is to simply switch the input to TV and watch whatever channel was selected previously.
The workaround I came up with was to select the input to HDMI3 and manually press the Input button to select the next input which is TV. The channel I get is whatever was previously selected.
Is there a better way to do this?

A paper weight and an extra battery, right? Glad to hear they are still giving great service.
TheCount 01-13-09, 12:24 AM Whenever I switch from playing the 360 or jsut turning everythign off my 360 turns off but not completely. The green ring on teh front turns off but I can still hear a fan going. Almost like its in hibernation or something. Any ideas what I can do to teh remote to turn the 360 completely off?
Did you ever get this worked out?
I've got a regular 360 and an Elite, yours wouldn't happen to be an Elite by any chance would it?
My Elite, once turned off, does the same thing for a little bit before turning off, almost like it's spinning itself down. It DOES turn completely off after less than a minute though.

My 360 does this. It happens when I have a controller plugged in with the play and charge kit. It will sit for hours running the fans until the controller is done recharging then it shuts off. I've been unplugging my controllers now because I don't like my 360 running any longer than it needs too. I've already resurrected it twice from the RROD. :)

Yes
craig_wagner 01-13-09, 11:07 AM Anyone that would make such a statement clearly does not have a PhD. While the Harmony softwatre is sometimes "quirky," it certainly is not difficult to use. LivingLargeInHD 01-13-09, 05:51 PM Since I had no responses with my thread, I thought I would try here....I just bought a the Cyron Lightbar 15" LED Media Highlighter System, Model # HT1502. Does anyone else have a Harmony remote where they can control these kind of LED ambient lightbars? They are not in the database, so I assume I can add the device and just make the remote learn the commands, but was wondering if there is a quicker way, especially if someone else out there has their Harmony (mine is an 880) currently set up so that you can control Cyron lighting. Any responses would be appreciated.....thanks.

If it uses an IR remote then you should be able to learn the commands. I looked for the HT1502 but the ones I found didn't have a remote so I can't tell.
FYI to whoever has the same issue as myself, the remote only works if you are real close to the IR receiver.
I found the problem to be the IR leds shorted out. If you open the remote, you will see the leds are yellow/brownish, when they are supposed to be clear.
Here's a step by step :
Go to radioshack and buy two of part#276-143 "high output infrared led" $1.99
Remove battery compartment, remove 2 screws.
Snap off the front cover, remove the 2 screws holding the circuit board down.
Take the circuit board and flip it with the screen downwards, you will see 2 IR leds on the top.
Cut off a led at the base, clean the area with a Q-tip (optional :take a toothpick and rub the contacts with flux).
IMPORTANT, note which side is the + and - on the new LED, the long one is the -, the short one is the +.
Cut to size, bend the pins so the led fits the spot of the old led, solder in place.
Repeat for the other side, close up the remote.
$4 fix for everyone that is out of warranty like myself.
I apologize for not taking pictures of the step by step, hindsight is always 20/20.
Good luck!

Weirdly mine has nothing plugged into it... is that a feature or a bug? I use battery packs, so I haven't plugged a controller into the thing in ages.

That sounds like a good fix, particularly for the do-it-yourselfers out there. I'm curious, though, did you contact Logitech support and see what they could do for you? If you read a few posts back, mpkelley20 was able to get support out of warranty. I have twice now received support after my warranty expired. It sounds like it is too late for you, but perhaps others out there might at least try and do what both mpkelley20 and I (and others) were able to do.
I would have contacted them, but I bought the remote on ebay for $20, so I doubt they would have given me any support ;)
I just thought I'd share that even with minimal soldering skills you can fix it yourself.

You might be surprised. Either way, I DO feel your suggestion was a good one and I'm glad you shared it with us. I just want to make sure others try the Logitech support avenue first, as once you open the remote, any free support won't be possible.
bertsirkin 01-14-09, 08:11 PM I have a Denon amp (AVR-1709) and Samsung Blu-Ray (BD-P1400).
When I select "Watch TV", the blu-ray player turns on with the TV and amp, but the blu-ray plaer isn't one of the devices in the "watch-tv" activity.
When I shut off with the remote, everything shuts off BUT the blu-ray player.
Selecting "Watch DVD" works fine - only required components turn on.
The option to turn off all unused devices IS selected on the remote setup.
Any ideas on how to stop this would be appreciated!

Stryker412 01-15-09, 10:08 AM I contacted Logitech about my charging issue. I bought the remote back when it first came out in 2005, and they sent me an e-mail this morning about starting the warranty process (even though it's way out of warranty).
My question is, what will they do? Will they just send me a new remote or will I send mine in and wait a few weeks while they test/repair it?
Edit: Nevermind they have deactivated my old remote and are sending me a new one.

They will probably send you a new base station, at least that is what they did with me. The new one (well, that was 2 years ago, anyway) works great.

Test out your Receiver and TV commands to see if they are getting confused with the power on command for your Blu Ray player. Sometimes IR commands from different companies can be too similar and it causes issues. For example my Lutron light control commands were too similar to the VCR input command on my Sony receiver, so any time I adjusted my lighting it would switch the receiver to the VCR input.

SwampDonkey 01-15-09, 03:47 PM Quick question for you experience 880 users. I ordered two of these, one for a friend. Is it possible to program our remote controlled ceiling fans into the remote? I figured I could but just wondering if anyone has tried, or has any tips on easy ways to get it programmed. Will the Logitech User Interface let you input fans as part of the activity? I have used one of these remotes before, but it was a 5 series, and was quite a while ago. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks

Assuming the fan has its own remote and it is IR, then, yes, it will work. You may have to learn the commands from the original remote, but it will work. RF won't work.

you know I didn't think about the fact that it could be RF. I just assumed it was IR. I will check. But yes they def are remote controlled. I just didn't know if you could type Fan models in and have the device show up in the set-up software, like you can for a TV or receiver.

Create an Activity, perhaps called Sirius. The wizard will ask you what Device(s) to use for that Activity. Bingo!

There are quite a few in the database already, but I assume there can't be too many commands for the fan (low, med, high, perhaps some lights commands?), so learning it won't be too bad.

Haha, i'm an idiot. I was taking the preset activity names literally. Using the Listen to Radio activity and changing the input from Tuner(recommended) to Sirius worked.
Thanks man!
SwampDonkey 01-16-09, 12:04 PM This remote is awesome. Logitech has made some great strides since their 5 series days. It took about 30 minutes of tweaking, but everything is running perfectly. The only thing it did at first that wasn't correct, was occasionally turn the TV off while switching activities. (if TV was on) I just attempted every situation I could think off, and fixed all the problems that came up directly on the remote. I even got a nice picture of a Bud Leaf as my background. ;) This remote is worth the buy IMO.
Question: is it possible to change the time display on the 880 without going to the Logitech site? It is about 10 min slow probably because I installed via the seldom used laptop.

Mine has an 'activity' called "System Options" (or something like that). One of the options is to set the date and time.
Time will aways be off after a while, plus there is a soft/firmware issue. You need to use 24 hour display or set in the AM only.
Enjoy
When I need to remove the battery for any reason, it seems to reset the time to 12:00 PM as well.
I don't really remember whether it is AM or PM, but it does do the reset.
Stryker412 01-20-09, 07:00 PM Happy New Year All!
After receiving a number of requests, I am now taking channel requests for the 880/890 remote's favorite icons. The searchable 8xx database at www.iconharmony.com will soon be up. I will begin populating it based on requests received.

Can you add icons for all the major networks? I noticed NBC and Fox HD were missing. Also I don't see (what used to be) Discovery HD Theater.
Also where can I download that nice theme from the picture you have in the 880 section?
mpkelley20 01-21-09, 09:09 AM You were right...they are sending me a new remote! Kudos to Logitech for recognizing this charging issue and taking care of their customers! The only downside to it....I get to keep the old remote....another paper weight!
Got my new/refurbished 880 replacement remote on Monday, charged it, ran the setup from the software and sucessfully started up my home theater. I was excited that I had a working remote (or one that could charge again) until I hit the up volume button and nothing happened. So after working with Logitech support on testing other ways to get the volume to work (testing to see if it is hardware related or command software related) they determined that it is hardware related.
I haven't heard back from them to see how this one will be replaced but I assume since this was a replacement one, they will just ask me to return it and send me another. I'd rather not have another paper weight in my house.!
So in my experience with the 880, I have had 2 original remotes that both failed. 1 of the 2 replacement remotes then failed requiring another replacement. That replacement of a replacement was broken right out of the box so that will require a replacement. And to make matters worse, my one working remote (one of the original replacements) is now showing signs of the charging problem.
I have now handled 5 880 remotes...all which have had some problem. I guess I am lucky that Logitech keeps repalcing them for me but I can't imagine them doing it forever. I am baffled at the quality control issues on this remote.

Yes, I agree as far as the charging issue goes, but keep in mind it appears to have been a model-specific design flaw, not so much a handful of defective units. Theoretically, all original 880/890s need to be replaced. I am surprised they didn't do a recall, as one-by-one seems like it may cost more in the long run. I guess many will never call, so perhaps their current policy is cheaper. And that would explain why they are being so liberal with their return policy.

Yes, hence the word "theoretically." Not all remotes (actually the base unit) will go bad, but most of the early ones "may" go bad.

I have the hot link pro with an 880; for me it works 98% of the time. An extra key punch here and there is not a big deal to me.
I have been using a 880 for about 18 months now. It's gets daily use and being located in the kitchen/family room area is susceptible to grunge/grime. But taking a hint from my wife. I wrap my 880 in cling wrap (Reynold, Saran Glad, whatever), wrapping it tightly and then cutting out a tiny hole where the charging contacts are. While not particularly elegant, it works really well and every time I replace the plastic wrap (about a month) I am surprise how new and pristine the 880 looks :) I could even possibly sell it as "as new"!

Don't put wads around it - two layers max and it's hardly noticeable if you stretch it tightly. And when you have kids who eat and watch, this is a god send:) Better than having to purchase a new 880 every now and then

Download the software from the Logitech site. Your settings are stored on the Logitech servers and not on your PC, login with the same user ID and password and the settings will be there for you to change and update to your remote.

You should just have to tell the wizard which devices are used for each Activity. It will take care of turning them on and off. You shouldn't have to get into dealing with specific device controls.

Rightfully so, it's like the power going out in your house -- the time displayed on your kitchen appliances usually gets reset too, right? I haven't seen a Harmony that retains the proper time after having batteries removed. Your Harmony account settings (devices/activities) are stored in non-volatile memory, which doesn't require power to retain, whereas the clock is controlled by a timing crystal, requiring constant power.

Shakespeare 01-26-09, 03:53 PM Hey all,
A quick question...I've got the Panasonic PZ80U plasma, a very popular TV, so I'm hoping someone else has had and fixed this problem.
When I told the 880 I had this TV, all of the regular (physical) buttons work just fine. But up on the screen, it only brought in one virtual button ("Favorites"). Why do you think it only found one virtual button for the TV?

avshelden 01-26-09, 10:23 PM Hi all -
I tried searching the forum but didn't come up with any thing that seemed to answer my questions, so apologies if these have been addressed previously...
In the additional buttons section for my Panasonic TC-32LX70 there are a ton of options that don't apply to my TV (e.g. PIP functions even though the TV has no PIP capability) I wanted to simplify the options by deleting functions that I won't use. Unfortunately I now have a few pages of partially populated options. Is there an easy way to remove the blank buttons (i.e. have all the other buttons shuffle up one space) or a blank page? Also, I inferred from a couple posts that there is no easy way to reorder them (moving up/down one at a time is such a PITA).
Also, a general navigation question. If I select an activity (e.g. watch PVR), then navigate to a "device menu," (e.g. mini system) is there a way to get back to the customized buttons for the "activity" without having the remote try to start up the activity again (as when I start the activity, it flashes up my input selection screen).
Thanks in advance.

When I told the 880 I had this TV, all of the regular (physical) buttons work just fine. But up on the screen, it only brought in one virtual button ("Favorites"). Why do you think it only found one virtual button for the TV?
S
Evidently not very many people have set up activities using this TV. Logitech bases their library off of a kind of majority setup. IF the majority of the people using a certain device map certain keys to the screen they add it to the library that way. Until that happens they don't bother to add many by default. You can always go in and map whatever commands you want at any time though, you aren't stuck with what Harmony set up for you.
As far as I know you have to move them all up yourself, or just go ahead and type in the ones you want where you want it and delete the others. It is kind of a pain, and you would think that logitech would have a way to make the software automatically delete pages that don't have any buttons assigned but at this time they don't.
Hitting either the device or activity button twice will take you back to your current activity.
I have had an 880 that worked perfectly for the last two years. I just added a panny blu-ray player and updated the remote. Now for some reason it locks up on the first screen when you power up the "watch tv" activity. The message that appears on the sceen telling you to keep your remote pointed stays there and I have to pull the battery to continue. Any thoughts? I searched and couldn't find any info.
Thanks in advance
Beerstalker 01-27-09, 03:43 PM Try updating the remote again if you haven't already. Sometimes there is a problem when it saves the programming to the remote and it can suase issues like this. You should also double check your Blu Ray device and make sure the power on delay isnt set for some really high number. I would recommend setting it to 0 because it is unlikely that you are ever going to need to send a command immediately after turning on the blu-ray player.
I'm having an ongoing issue with my 880 controlling a Panasonic DMP-BD35 and Panasonic TH-50PZ85U through an Onkyo HT-R640. Here's what happens:
When I select the activity for Watch DVD, the remote goes through all the proper motions and sets everything up right. However, there appears to be some sort of handshake issue as the BD35 goes to a No Disc display (as normal when no disc is inserted) and the Onkyo goes to a No Signal display while the TV just stays black. I can fix the issue by power cycling the BD35. I figure an easy fix is to just have the on command for the BD35 be about 5 seconds late so the other devices are already setup, but doing this is proving next to impossible. No matter what I do to the delays, the BD35 still comes on instantly.
So, is there some Viera link setting that might fix this because right now it's turned off. I want to get this working because I will be able to take advantage of the lossless audio via the HDMI.
Is there a simple way to have the BD35 wait for everything else to setup?
Shakespeare 01-28-09, 11:30 AM Hey BenJF3,
Does your 880 have a better setup than mine when you tell it you have the PZ85U. If so, I'll just tell it I have the 85U to fix this problem I'm having --->

Are you taking about the Devices screen or Activities? It's best to bring in the most frequently used device (i.e. your Panny TV) commands to your activity anyway. Not sure why only one custom button would come in, but it's easy to add others.
In Devices, select "Settings" for the Panny TV, then Customize Buttons, click Next, and then Additional Buttons. Type in a Label and then select the appropriate Command(s) (I'm assuming other commands show up in that drop down. If none do, you'll have to learn the command you want).
In Activities (the recommended place to add frequently used commands), select "Customize Buttons" for the appropriate activity, and then Additional Buttons. Type in a Label, select the appropriate device (Panny TV), and then select the appropriate Command(s).
BertBert 01-28-09, 03:30 PM I have this issue, My remote wasnt working properly when you had to press hard on the volume up to get the recevier to respond, well I then updated the remote and it took care of that, but ever since then I have been experiencing the oddest thing when the keys are pressed it feels like there's some resistance and then the keys tend to get stuck but only as you are pressing them but all the functions work ok. (not all the keys just some keys and usually on the left side of the remote)
Anyone else?

The delays only change the amount of time it waits after a device is turned on before it tries to send another command to that device. It will still send out commands to other devices while is is waiting for that delay to expire.
You need to figure out which order your devices need to turn on and make sure to set up your activity that way. I would guess that the TV needs to be on first, then the receiver, then the Blu-Ray player. Use the device mode of your harmony (or the OEM remotes) to turn them on in that order and see if it works. If not then try the opposite order Blu-Ray, Receiver, TV. Once you figure out the correct order go into your Harmony settings for the activity and click on options. The last option should be change the order devices turn on or something like that. Make sure that is set up right and then update your remote and try it.
Let us know what you find out, or if you still have problems. You may end up having to manually add a delay and power on command to your activity to get it to work right.

Sounds like someone got something sticky on the remote, and it needs to be cleaned.

Is there an easy way to clean it. I dont have a problem opening it up, my only concer would be re-assembling it back together, are there any springs that might pop out or anything like that?

I've tried that. I moved around the sequence in the way the devices power on and there is just not enough delay to get a proper handshake. (HDCP is a total joke and sucks by the way as I've had nothing but problems with components due to it). I mean, I could be forced to use component like I have to with the cable box, but that defeats the purpose of the BluRay by killing the 1080/24P output. I figure all I need to do is set the BluRay to power on about 5 seconds after everything else powers up, but trying to do this with crappy software is a nightmare. Logitech has the most user unfriendly software I've ever seen. If I manually turn or have the TV already on with the AV receiver and power up after they are set, it works. It seems that this shouldn't be that hard to tell the remote to do.

Occasionally I have had a similar problem with my bluray player.
I found that the easiest way to solve the handshaking problem was to change my A/V receiver to another input and then back to the one used by the bluray.
You should be able to add the commands to do this to the LCD buttons. It may even be possible to add them to the activity as well, but it happens so seldom for me that I have not bothered to investigate further.
Yea, this is happening constantly. I believe the only time it doesn't happen is when you start Watch DVD activity from a complete power off. As I stated, it seems that all that needs to be done is add a 5 sec power on delay to the BluRay, but Logitech makes doing this a pain in the ass.

Ben - I'm sure you've thought of this, but have you contacted Logitech support? Up until last year sometime, they pretty much gave unlimited phone support. I believe they are no longer doing that, but they do offer unlimited e-mail support. They've helped me through some pretty complicated issues. They are able to do things through their system that we mere mortals cannot. Just a thought.

Will your Onkyo deinterlace 1080i? If so, how is it compared to the Panny TV?
I contacted support and at one point the made some changes to the setup and told me to update, but I still had issues. I may go through them again, but I mean c'mon already - why can't I just have the power command wait 5 seconds?
The Onkyo is an HT-R640 - it just passes through HDMI and takes the multichannel audio. When it works, it sends the proper 1080/24p signal to the set.
I'll see what Logitech can do to help, but if worse comes to worse I may have to use a direct connection and separate audio which I'd hate to do because then I lose the HD audio formats. I can try to see if the Viera link will help as well in syncing them better. I noticed the Viera link will send commands to the BDP even when the AV Receiver is off.

I guess what I meant to say was how does component look versus HDMI? Even without the 24 frames ability, it may look just as good. You could go component directly to TV and HDMI to receiver for high resolution audio. Perhaps you've already tried and mentioned that?

See above.
letsee13 01-29-09, 12:38 AM I have the Panasonic EZ485V (the VCR & DVD-R combo unit) and I just bought the Panasonic DMP-BD35 (BluRay player). The problem is, when I set up the new bluray player everytime it does a command with the Harmony 880 both machines respond. The bluray player has an option in its setup screens to change the remote control code. It has Set Code 1, Set Code 2 or Set Code 3. You choose one of them (default is Set Code 1), then hold the "ok" button down at the same time as the numeral of the code set (1, 2 or 3) for 5seconds and then your bluray remote responds only to its remote (and the other continues to respond to the original codes). Problem is, when I try to hold down "ok" and number 2 (to use Set Code 2) on the Harmony, it doesn't have the same effect. I really don't want to have to have the Harmony learn every single function again from the remote (with the new code set). Anyone ever deal with this? Thanks!
letsee13 01-29-09, 01:02 AM Yep, the remotes are indentical for both DVD players and they were able to control each other with either remote before I got the 880. Oh well, I guess I am SOL :(. I have to approach the DVD player to put the disc in anyway, so I could simply turn it off manually at that time and eject the tray for the Blu-Ray player. It really is not a big deal, but I thought there was something I could do that I was unaware of. Thanks for the info.
Two things that might work:
1. Check the manuals for each player to see whether it is possible to set one of them to use a different command set.
2. Try describing your problem on remotecentral.com. Many professional installers check that site and you might get another suggestion.
I'm having this exact issue. Does anyone have any idea or a work around? The Blu-Ray has the option to change the "Remote Control Code" to a different set but when I do that the Harmony doesn't work. Is my only option to make the Harmony learn each button on the changed code set? Please tell me there is another easier fix!

Ok we can still fix this I think.
Log into your Harmony account.
Go to your Blu-Ray player device and click on Settings
Select Adjust power settings and click Next
Select I want to turn off this device when it's not in use and click Next
Select A button on the remote for On, and a different button for Off and click Next
Select I don't have the original remote, but I know the command that is used: and set it to -None- and click Next
Click Yes
Select I don't have the original remote, but I know the command that is used: and set it to PowerOff and click Next
Click Next a few times to update your activities.
Click Done
Go to your Watch a Blu-Ray activity and click on Settings
Select Review the settings for this Activity and click Next
Select Yes, but I want to add more control of options and devices for this Activity. and click Next
Click Save until you get to the screen that says Custom Actions
Add and action for your blu-ray player and click add
Set it to have a 5 second infrared delay and click Next
Add and action for your blu-ray player and click add
Set it to send the PowerOn command and click Next
Select Yes, the settings are correct and click Next
Select Done and update your remote.
If you have any problems let me know and I can try to help. If you want you can even PM your login and password to me and I can login and make the changes myself. Set a temporary password like 12345 if you want.

Yes there is an easy fix. Your first problem is you need your original Blu-Ray player remote to do this. You first change the codeset on the player using the original remote. Then you change the original remote to match the Blu-Ray player (That is what you are doing when you hold down the OK button and a number at the same time). You have to do that on the original Blu-Ray player's remote, not on the Harmony remote. Doing this should make it so the original remote and Blu-Ray player work fine with each other. After you do this make sure the DVD player no longer responds to any of the Blu-Ray player remote's commands. If it still does try another one of the Blu-Ray players remote codesets.
The Blu-Ray player should stop responding to any commands sent by the Harmony remote after you do this, but the DVD player will still work.
Now you have to log into the Harmony software and go to your Blu-Ray player device.
Click on Troubleshoot
Select DVD is not responding to any commands sent by the remote. and click Next
Select Yes - I have a remote for this device and click Next
The software will then have you hook up your Harmony remote to the USB cable and to the computer.
It will then ask you to aim your original Blu-Ray player remote at the learning port and hit a few different buttons on the original Blu-Ray remote. Don't worry you shouldn't have to learn every single command, it will just ask you to hit a few of them so it can determine what codeset the original remote is set to. Once it can figure that out it will then automatically change everything to use the correct codeset (this assumes that Harmony has all 3 codesets in the database, if they don't you may have to learn every command).
Once that is done you can update your remote and it should control the Blu-Ray player fine.

Believe it or not I figured that out (did a bunch of searching online) probably as you were posting this, but I really appreciate such a quick and thorough response. I hope someone else will now be able to find this here and benefit from my issue and your well written explanation of how to fix it! Thanks!
fireman325 01-29-09, 01:46 PM I'm sure this has been asked before, but how many here have upgraded from the 550 to the 880? I currently have a 550 and it works great, but I like the bigger, color screen and charging dock of the 880 so I'm thinking about upgrading. For those here that have made the same change, how did you like going from the 550 to the 880? Were there any drawbacks that you didn't anticipate? Did you have trouble setting up your activities/devices with the new remote or did everything work smoothly?
I've already tried doing a search but couldn't find anything regarding my specific questions.
Thanks.
SnellKrell 01-29-09, 02:52 PM I love my 880, but in the past and possibly today, there's a design problem with the charging cradle. Some really like the peanut shape, not my favorite.
I also have a 720 - if I were you I'd buy a 720, check out the prices.

What kind of design problem are you referring to with the 880 charging cradle? I'm guessing your 720 doesn't suffer from the same problem? I never knew there was a 720. I guess they don't make them any more? I can't find it on Logitech's website.
Other than the shape and 6 activity buttons vs 8, are there any other major differences?
SnellKrell 01-29-09, 04:06 PM There have been versions of the 880's cradle that didn't allow for the proper contact to me made for recharging.
No problem with the 720 in this.
The 720 was orignally, and for a long time only available at Sears, Costco, etc.,
it can now be found at many e-tailers. Google it.
I'm sure there are more differences, but shape of the remote and the buttons are the main ones for me - also how you get to Favorites.
fireman325 01-29-09, 04:36 PM I Googled it a while ago, but was curious about the specific issue you mentioned about the charging cradle. So do you have trouble getting your 880 to charge? Also I know it says it's backlit, but I don't see a "glow" button on it anywhere like on the 550 and 880. How do you light it up?
SnellKrell 01-29-09, 05:49 PM That's the issue - problems in charging the remote.
I am on my 4th cradle - it works most of the time. It should work all the time.
There very well might be a new version.
No problems charging the 720.
No separate Glow button on the 720, never use it on the 880. Just pick them up and
both light up - you can also set them to keep the light going for a specified amount of time.

Thanks for the info. I use the glow button on my 550 all the time. It's motion sensor has always seemed a little screwy though. If it's laying on the coffee table and I walk by it'll usually light up, but not when I pick it up or shake it or pitch it to my wife from across the room.
With your 880, do the contact points on the remote fail to make proper contact with the points in the cradle? Does it make any difference if you put a little downward pressure on it or lay something on it while it's in the cradle?
BulletHead 01-29-09, 09:42 PM i really really really hope someone can resolve my issue.
so i have a Harmony 880 and one of the devices im using with it is a Yamaha RX-Z1 receiver. now i dont have the original remote that came with the Yamaha receiver, so i am using all the settings available to me thru the 880.
i just bought and hooked up a sub with the receiver using the line out. now the "db level" settings on the receiver are blank or 0 for the subwoofer. i can display and toggle between all the speakers on the receiver but cant seem to change the settings. none of the buttons on the 880 seem to change it. any clues?

I just want to suggest that you don't over analyze this. Most people are delighted with the 880. Some older units develop the contact problem and from all reports here Logitech has been superb about replacing them. Even poor SnellKrell, who has had a terrible run of luck has gotten good service from Logitech. The base and newer units have been improved.
As for lighting, when we pick up the 880 it lights up. If we pick it up too slowly or too gently it may not and just tilting it causes it too light up. If we have it sitting on a couch cushion and move around it usually does not llight up if someone shifts, which is great.
We have a friend who has had a 550 for a long time. It was very nice when it was state of the art, but we love the 880 and are considering buying them a newer unit as a gift.

Thank you for the reply. I'm still considering the 880 as my 1st choice. I played with a demo 890 the other day, which is the same shape and button layout, and I actually like the shape and feel of it. I just find that the monochrome display on my 550 is hard to read sometimes and even though I have rechargeable batteries, it gets irritating have to change them sometimes. I know these are nit-picky complaints, but those are my gripes. The 550 will do just fine in my bedroom though. ;)

I really love my 880. The shape is good. The button layout is OK, but it is not as easy to find the right button without looking compared to my DISH PVR remote. The problem is that there is no space between some buttons and they also don't use a logical pattern. I can use my PVR remote without looking at it. On the 880 I can use a few buttons without looking but even on some of them I will hit an adjacent button on accident.
On the other hand, I love the function of the 880. I have been able to address any issues by going into the settings (although it is a bit obscure). And the glow function works great.

I don't think I've ever had a single remote I got familiar enough with to be sure I was hitting the right button without looking at it. That's why it's important for me for the remote to be backlit, which all of the Harmony remotes are. I also played a little with the new Harmony 1, and there were things I liked better about it, but also things I liked less about it. I did like the button feel and layout a little better, but I really don't care for the touchscreen or the fact that it only has 3 activities on it at a time. I've also read where a lot of people have trouble touching just the right spot on the screen and up initiating a different command than intended.
Fire Man 02-01-09, 10:27 AM My 880 has worked great until I recently added the Panny blu ray, which isn't really my problem. Out of nowhere it won't stay on the input for watching tv. At first it comes on the proper input (HDP on a Denon 1909) but after about ten seconds it switches to another input. I don't get it!!
So I've tried updating my remote and changing setting then changing them back. I also tried switching the inputs from HDP to VCR. It still does the exact same thing. Starts up and goes to the right input, then after about 10 seconds it switches to TV/Cable. I've never used this input so I really don't understand why it is hung up on it.

Are you sure it is the 880? In other words, have you blocked the IR after the TV and other devices turn on? Did you just get the 1909 or change something on it? The issue you describe is usually because the HDMI control is on in the 1909. I have the same receiver and frequently hear of this issue on the 1909 thread. Go into Manual Setup>HDMI Setup>arrow down to HDMI Control and make sure it is set to "OFF."

I might be premature on this cause I only tried it once, but so far WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!!
At first I was sure it was the remote (it is indeed the 880). This problem started when I added my panny blu ray. Until then I only had one thing connected via HDMI. So I guess once I added another HDMI input it made that setting inappropriate.
This place never fails to come though. Thank you sir!

Ahh, yes, the power of the masses. I'm glad it worked, at least for now. Let us know if it doesn't.
avshelden 02-03-09, 01:15 PM So I've had my 880 for about 2 weeks now and have slowly customizing it. Overall I'm pretty happy, but there is one thing that I'd like to do but don't seem to be able to do. Most of the time we just have the sound play through our TV when watch live TV, our PVR or VCR, but occasionally for a movie, I'll want to play the sound through our Sony DVD/audio system (DAV-700). Is there a way to set up the activity so that it won't automatically turn on the DVD/audio system, but will still allow me to set up additional buttons that control it? Playing around it looks like if I add the DVD/audio to the activity, it automatically will turn it on with option to tell it otherwise.
Thanks in advance.

Add the activity again that just uses the TV and PVR/VCR. I have several things that sometimes turn on the AVR, sometimes not. Just give them a different name.
SnellKrell 02-03-09, 01:22 PM This sound very much the way I have my 880 perform.
Set up two separate Activities -
such as, Watch TV - and in the set-up you choose that the audio comes through your
TV set. In this case, your DAV-700 should not turn on at all.
I call my other option - Watch TV - SURR - but you can name it anything you like.
For this Activity, you set up the remote's programming that the audio is controlled by
the DAV-700.
Works great for me.
Hope this helps.
rinker97 02-03-09, 02:29 PM Is there a way to make a sequence longer than 5 steps on the 880? I need to do 11 steps to turn my TV speakers off for my Watch TV - Surround activity. Also, can you assign a sequence to an activity?

5 steps is max for a sequence
A sequence can only be added to a hard key or a soft key in an activity
You can add command to the begining and end of an activity I'm not sure you can add 11, I have one that is 9 steps. To add the steps you need to go to the activity and redo the set up.
Settings>Review settings>yes but I want....>save>next>this will get you to screen where you can add commands to the start and end of an activity.
Enjoy
BulletHead 02-04-09, 10:05 AM i really really really hope someone can resolve my issue.
so i have a Harmony 880 and one of the devices im using with it is a Yamaha RX-Z1 receiver. now i dont have the original remote that came with the Yamaha receiver, so i am using all the settings available to me thru the 880.
i just bought and hooked up a sub with the receiver using the line out. now the "db level" settings on the receiver are blank or 0 for the subwoofer. i can display and toggle between all the speakers on the receiver but cant seem to change the settings. none of the buttons on the 880 seem to change it. any clues?
anyone?

That is for all of their remotes, right? So if I went to a newer model it wouldn't help.

Did you try looking in your manual for the receiver? I think you would be better off asking in a forum for Yamaha receivers.

Also have you tried checking the individual button settings in the remote to make sure there are commands mapped to the buttons you're trying to use? And have you checked in your receiver to make sure you have the subwoofer setting set to yes or on.
bweissman 02-04-09, 01:36 PM Is there a way to make a sequence longer than 5 steps on the 880? I need to do 11 steps to turn my TV speakers off for my Watch TV - Surround activity.I accomplished this by teaching my 880 a very long "command" in RAW mode. (This was in the days before sequences were available.) I was able to get 17 Volume Down commands into a single RAW mode command. When teaching, you just hold down the button for a long time and with luck, the 880 will be convinced it's just one very long command. You may need a few attempts to get the command length right; if it's too long, the 880 will reject it and you'll need to try again.

THe other way is to ask Harmony support and they can program it for you and then you download it. I and several others needed about 8 or 9 commands to turn off the PS3. Can't be done using their GUI but if you tell Harmony what you want to do they will construct the macro for you.
As an aside if they can do it, I wonder why they don't change the GUI to allow end users to do it also
fireman325 02-04-09, 11:01 PM I've just recently learned there is a Harmony 885. Of course it's not on Logitech's website though. What's the difference between the 880 and the 885. I tried a search but there's only a few threads that mention the 885 and none of them answer my question. Thanks.

According to this Website (http://leisure.prior-it.co.uk/logitech-harmony-880-review.shtml):
The main differences between the 880 and the 885 models are that the 880 is targeted at USA markets, while the 885 is for the European market which has different Teletext options. Basically the page up and down buttons have been replaced by four Teletext (Fasttext) colour buttons. The European model therefore gives you two extra buttons to play with. There will likely be a price difference between the two as well.

You can go into the Device/TV/Adjust the Delays and decrease the Power On Delay. I have to have mine set to 30s since it's a RP JVC that takes that long to warm up. If I don't have a delay then when the macro tries to switch the TV to the appropriate input, the TV isn't ready and doesn't respond
For a LCD or Plasma, they might turn on faster so you don't need such a long delay. Experiment with what works with your TV

Can I ask you where are you shutting the PS3 from. Is this command you have for playing games or watching movies. do you first exit the game/movie then you shut the components off? I'm asking because I would like to add it to my sequence to shutting the PS3 off. I also ask because when I choose to change from one activity to another or when shutting down everything for the night while still in a movie/game the PS3 asks me if I want to quit. I noticed it because I was downloading a game one time and decided to chage activities and since I know the PS3 wouldnt shut off I thought it be alright to use the 'Watch TV' activity instead of manually changing the commands by going into the particular device (i.e. 'TV', 'AVR') And when I switched input on my tv to check wether the download was finished the screen was blanked out with the "are you sure you want to exit the download, yes and no on the bottom of that"
thank you

Correct it is for all Harmony remotes it has to do with their basic programing.
I think you need to try my original suggestion to see if that will resolve your issue.

I am always at the XMB when I do it. So I will quit a game, quit a movie, quit Internet etc before powering off devices. So the power off sequence is a bunch of left cursor movements (I think Harmony programmed about 8 so it should work no matter where you are in the XM), a couple of Up's, X and then X
I have also noticed that if you don't have a power off sequence in your activity change and you are doing something on the PS3 and go to some other activity, for some reason the 800/Nyko can send some command to cause the current activity to stop (like as you say, a download or playing a movie). I am not sure why it does that - probably some quirk in the Nyko where it is sending some extraneous command. I haven't delved into too much but it's clear from what you're experiencing it's not an isolated incident.

gregf70 02-14-09, 05:57 PM Hey guys,
I want to add Multichannel options to my blu-ray and oppo player.
In the audio portion of activity set up
The 880 sets it to DVD input on the Onkyo receiver but I want to add another step switch to Multichannel mode too.
How can I do that?
The current way I am doing it is press the Watch OPPO button and getting up off couch and walking over to receiver and pressing the Multichannel button on the receiver. I know I need to exercise.. but c'mon. That has to be a way.

Sure there is. Add a new activity which you could name Watch BD or whatever. Do the same as you do now for Watch DVD but after telling the AVR to switch to the DVD (presumably HDMI ) input, add another command to the AVR to switch the input to multichannel mode
I have to do this all the time. There is no discrete command for my TV for going to the HDMI input. The closest is Video4 which is component. So for watching BD or HD-DVD via HDMI I tell the TV to go to Video4 and then execute Input Next which causes the input selector to step down one more which happens to be HDMI

That's the way to do it assuming there is an IR code to switch to multi-channel. Right now they are physically hitting a button on the receiver.

Guess we will need the OP to tell us what model AVR he's working with to know if such a button exists. It should but you can never tell

Not sure if this make sense to me. there's a difference between the Input and the Mode. On my remote all I've done is add (on the additional button screen) the macro from the my AVR remote. On the first page of my remote in Watch Blu-ray I have a button that says Cinema and this button toggles between DTS and DD movie mode, another for the music portion and another for Stereo mode. I can also change from all channel stereo to 7.1 on that same page. All you have to do is add it to the additional button config on Watch DVD or Watch Blu-ray activity. That way you dont have to leave the activity and enter a device mode to change your multichannel settings.
Hope this helps
gregf70 02-14-09, 11:38 PM Hey guys, thanks for the responses.
To clarify, the input is DVD, but the addition is multichannel. The receiver is an Onkyo SR505. Not really high-end but does the job for me. I did find a way to do it. I was able to set a non-used button on the remote to switch it. I haven't figured out a way to do that yet from hitting an activity, but having a button on the remote to do it works.
Thank you though.
SnellKrell 02-14-09, 11:54 PM I know it's nice to have the Harmony do as much as possible, but I have the same situation - there are times I want to use the MultiInput button on my processor.
But since I have a single disc DVD player, I have to go to the equipment rack to load the disc, and the processor is right there.
I've already gotten up from the sofa - no big deal.

When you get tired of pressing another button or explaining to the rest of the family how to do it, the 880 can do that for you. Since you have a button on the remote that does it, it's easy enough to add one more action to the activity that is to watch HD movies to send the command from the remote to switch the AVR to multichannel mode.
darkknight1999 02-15-09, 12:02 PM So we've had this remote for a while and I have to say... its just not for me. My girl got it for a good deal but it wasn't worth it for us. You really can't set it up the way you'd really like to have things set up. I'm used to having control at the macro level. I totally understand that this isn't a high caliber remote.
Looks like I'm gonna upgrade to the RTI T3 or T4. If I have the extra $$ I'll get the T4 but I'll settle for the T3 because this thing drives me nuts.
If anyone knows someone upgrading from a T4 from a T3 let me know. If anyone is interested in buying this let me know. PM your offer.

You know the 880 isn't in the same league as those products. Especially price wise. You're in the wrong place. Even the One won't satisfy you if you're looking to spend over $1k for a remote. Good luck and enjoy your new remote! I haven't searched but am sure you'll find the right place here at AVS or RemoteCentral.

Yeah I know your right. I program and install higher end stuff... not all the time but often enough to know that I really like the RTI products myself. I like being able to control it down to the macro. But the girl got it for a good deal because she found a nice Samsung for the bedroom but it was missing the remote so the guy cut her a deal. So I decided to use the Samsung blu-ray remote to control that TV and use the Harmony to control the gear in the living room. It does control most of the gear just not the way I would like I guess. I'm sure for the right family it would be perfect. Actually now that I think of it.. it might work good for my parents... lol :D
legierk 02-15-09, 11:06 PM Man, I love mine more each day. I tweak it about every 2 months or so just to change the colors etc....cheesy huh? Well, it still does all I need it to do for about 2 years running now.

Same here. many people give up on it early on, I think because they really have not seen all that it can do. Part of this I blame on Logitec because of their limited info, which is obvious from all the posts on this forum. I know I was a bit baffled in the beginning but now would never think of going to another remote.
The key to the harmony is that it can be used by others, like your wife, without having to memorize buttons to do specific things, as was the case for my many "programmable' remotes with their esoteric macros. I could use them but no-one else could without a crib sheet.
AFAIC it is the best remote on the market. I like it better than the one because you can have 16 commands in the window so less cycling to other windows.
Has anyone else had a problem where an "update" to a device on their 880 was actually worse? I have a Mitsubishi 65735 DLP set. I have problems getting the Harmony to do a delay for 11-12 seconds before doing the input switch. So the other day I pressed the troubleshooting button on the Harmony software, and it said there was an updated version for that TV. I installed it, and it took away several of the inputs. I had discrete "InputComponent" choices, but they were gone. I had to revert back to the "old" TV setting to get it to work properly.

Guys thanks again for the help! I emailed logitech with the instructions and it only took 1 day for me to update my remote with the new macro. Showed my wife how to do it and viola all is good.
Again thanks... ;)
TimothyP83 02-16-09, 06:10 PM is anyone using the harmony to run their windows media center on the PC? if so, how did you set that up? Thanks.
omegat3 02-17-09, 01:05 PM My 880 is significantly slower controlling the Onkyo 706 than the original remote. I've played around with the delays as well as relearning the commands in RAW mode. Volume works fine, but the directional buttons seem to only send one command and then stop necessitating multiple presses when navigating menus and settings. Has anyone else seen this, resolved this, etc.? Thanks in advance.

I use an onkyo receiver and haven't had this issue. You may want to call Logitech, I hear their support for these remotes is excellent!

which receiver are you using it with? would you mind passing along the settings you have for it (delay, repeats)?

HT-R320, just picked it off the harmony site and it worked perfectly. No modifications required. Maybe I just got lucky!
robcomptec 02-18-09, 12:03 AM Yes. It's one of the options in the device setup.
Select "Redo initial setup" for the TV device (or whatever device you are using to select channels). If will irst go through the Power and Input options, and after that will ask something like "How do you select channels with your original remote?". One of the options is "Number then Enter".
Thanks! That was the piece of info I needed!
1brokebrother 02-18-09, 10:58 AM You really can't set it up the way you'd really like to have things set up. I'm used to having control at the macro level. .
sounds to me like somebody didn't fully read the directions
tooxshort 02-19-09, 03:04 AM Is there a way to tell if the 880 remote I got was a refurb or not?
...because several of the buttons do not work and I've tried my friend's remote and all of the functions work flawlessly (eg. device, prev, directionX buttons) ...
Is there a way to tell within the battery compartment?

Should it matter? If it is under warranty contact Logitech for a replacement.

Was it in a sealed, pretty Logitech box? New. Not, refurb.

Um...yes, it matters because I don't know if it's under warranty as I got it used. If I knew whether or not it was under warranty, I would've called Logitech first.

It had the Logitech box, but it wasn't factory sealed because I got it used off craigslist.org with no receipt.

The 880 will work with your media center PC. If you already have a remote with your PC you can have the harmony learn that remote in setup or learn each function individually. If you don't have a remote with your PC, you will probably need to buy an IR receiver and MC remote for your PC like the Microsoft one.
sylvaing 02-20-09, 11:45 PM Hi, I had a Toshiba RV530U TV that I exchanged for a RV535U model a week later but not before I had programmed (and deleted once I got the new TV) the 880 for the RV530U. Both TV uses the same remote but somehow, the 880 software for the 530U has more 'features' (that are not even present on the real remote) than the RV535U version. Now I don't want to redo all my activities (ie, delete the RV535U device and recreate the RV530U device instead) so is there a way to import features from one device to another? I doubt I can but can't hurt asking :)
Thanks.
Beerstalker 02-21-09, 04:32 PM I would suggest trying your remote as it is currently set up. If it doesn't have any issues then there is no reason to change your TV device and redo everything.
I recently did the same thing. I replaced my Hitachi 57F59 with a Hitachi 65F710. All of the commands from the 57F59 work fine with the 65F710, so I haven't bothered changing anything in my Harmony settings.
Geaux Tigers 02-21-09, 10:42 PM Just wanted to say I took apart my remote to do the hot glue fix according to this thread, and I was successful.
1) Remove screw from the top, near IR window
2) Press slightly down on the battery cover groove and slide out, it will come off.
3) Remove battery
4) Remove screw from the botton, below the battery cavity.
5) Gently loosen bottom 1/3 of the remote, so you can wedge in a jewelers flat head screw driver _near_ the 'snap/clip' inside.
6) Repeat on opposite side
7) Gently loosen up to about 2/5 of the remote.
8) Gently loosen the 'snap/clip' on one side and repeat.
9) Loosen up to the 4/5 of the remote.
10) Gently loosen the 'snap/clip' on the left and right.
11) Gently remove seperate the two halves of the remote, but be extra gently with the top IR window, so you don't break it.
12 ) Look for the appropriate rubber bump that corresponds to the poorly responding button.
13) Apply a tiny bit of hot glue, and cut off the excess, or just remove the glue and try again, it doesn't really stick to the rubber. I used about a 2mm dab of glue, that seemed too large but once I closed up the remote and pressed it a few times, it felt fine.
14) Slide IR window back on
15) Snap the remote back together from the top, middle and bottom
16) Replace battery, and use the rubber wedge/paper wedge trick on the bottom side of the battery if it feels loose. (one of the battery not charging tricks)
17) Close up and test.
Good luck and be sure to clean off your contacts, lcd window and use some compressed air to clean the internals while you have the remote open.
Thanks for the instructions. It worked like a charm. It took a while to get the glue amount just right but after I did it worked. My volume up key was giving me problems. When I would press the volume key up it would sometimes lower the volume. I then used this technique and at first applied too much glue which caused the volume to go up when either the volume up or down key was pressed. I then applied a smaller amount of glue and everything works perfectly now.
ImRonMexico 02-22-09, 01:45 AM anyone got pictures of their menus and screens? I'm dying to see some custom displays, before splurging and buying this!
