YukonJack 02-22-09, 07:52 PM So I received a refurbed 880 and charge cradle in the mail the other day. Mine was not charging properly. The only thing is that I wasnt told they were doing this, and now I have two remotes (my old one and the replacement). It does not appear that they are asking me to return the old one. Any thoughts on what I should do?

nope, you are now the proud owner of a $200 paperweight.
By any chance are you from Edmonton?

I think even if you were to fix it, it would not be that useful. The serial # of the dead one would no longer be allowed to be updated by the online application so you could use it only if you could fix it and didn't change components or activities.
If the charging issue was just the 880 not contacting the cradle properly you could try dropping bits of solder onto the contacts of the old cradle raising the profile of the contact point. I did that and now my 880 always makes contact. If not you can after market batteries for the 880 (Nokia cellphone batteries) that work fine but won't charge (charge them in your good one or use an aftermarket charger). So if you never change your components or activities you have a spare remote!
pedrojunkie 02-23-09, 11:58 PM So I have been digging around a bit but I can't seem to find the proper search parameters if the topic has been discussed. I have had the Harmony 880 for a few years now, it has performed flawlessly other than they typical charging issues. But Ive had a new issue pop up.
I have 2 of the same device types set to different IR codes. Every time I update the remote it decides to ignore the different codes and pick one of the devices to work on. For example both DVR1 and DVR2 are both being sent DVR2's codes.
Everything looks fine in the setup on my computer. DVR1 is set to the factory default and DVR2 was set to the secondary codes (I had to manually program each button for this) Both DVR's are being sent the secondary codes despite the fact that in setup DVR1 is listed as being under factory default. (I press devices and try to turn on DVR1 and DVR2 turns on)
Like I said this has been working fine for years and I updated something simple and non-related. (I changed the input for my DVD player) Its happened a few times in the last few months and I'd have to delete the devices and redo setup each time to get it to work again which is obviously way too much work to devote an hour and a half a month to a universal remote just for maintaining status quo.
so if anyone knows whats happening, I would be greatly appreciative. I'm using the Sony HDD250/500 and they both respond correctly to the manufacturer's remote.
tecnomuzik 02-24-09, 05:26 AM Ok guys I'm new around here and looking for a little help. I have my remote all setup and I recently added the X10's from Smarthome (X10 ProIR-543). The problem I'm having is that when I turn on my lights, the TV turns off. I've looked through the settings and my light controller is set to "All other devices are off." Is there anyway to have this ignore my other devices? When I turn lights on or off I want it to disregard all the other devices. Any info is appreciated!
kepople 02-24-09, 11:34 PM I need to refelct my IR from the 880 to the back of the room. The screen is not doing it anymore, so i need to use some kind of repeater. Heck a mirror on the front wall would do it, but thats not going to work esthetically...
Suggestions?

dapdrums 02-26-09, 10:02 AM I hope I can explain my question adequately...
If I manually turn my TV/Receiver/SciAtl cable box ON, instead of using my Harmony 880 to perform the task, and then later in the day hit WATCH DVD Activity (as the first operation on the Harmony for that day) - My Samsung TV turns off instead of just switching the HDMI input. Yet, if the former is all ON and I cover my hand over the remote and hit WATCH TV activity, and then go back and hit WATCH DVD it seems to leave the TV on and correctly change inputs.
I would think that the WATCH DVD activity would know the TV was ON and leave it, but it seems like it sends a toggle? Yet if the remote knows it did WATCH TV then it has the "smarts" to say "The tv is on, so leave it on and change inputs".
Is there a way to set it up so if stuff was manually turned on, and my I later use the remote to say "Watch DVD", the TV won't turn off?

Unfortunately the remote has no way of knowing that you messed with the components. Also, most components don't have a discreet power on or power off IR code. Therefore a power toggle is sent and your device becomes "out of sync" with everything else. I do the same thing you do. I cover the sensor, press the activity, and then make the change. On occasion something will miss the signal, like the av receiver, so I press device and use the power button to fix that item individually. I've done programming of crestron systems before and this is one of the reasons why installers prefer serial (two way) communications over IR.

A friend of mine setup a simple IR blaster from partsexpress. He mounted the lens up front by the screen, then ran a wire back to his equipment rack and has the signal spread out and stickied to the individual components. I don't believe it was too expensive. A mirror sure would be nice and cheap though but not very practical to have up front. :)

Thanks. I decommissioned my old Pronto when I got my new TV and PS3. Re-programming the Pronto is harder then the nice web-interface of the Harmony. Pre-child I had more time for stuff like that:) Anyway, the Pronto didn't have that problem - my Sony XBR TV just stayed on, so I was expecting my new Samsung to do the same with the Harmony. I'll have to just keep covering it I guess. Not a big deal for me, but hard to explain to the grand-parents and wife - I'll have to teach my 5 year old so he can show them!

Instead of covering the Harmony when things get out of sync and using Device mode to correct them, just use the Help button on the Harmony. That will be MUCH easier for your family.
The Help button will ask them if the TV is on, and if it isn't it will turn it on and then ask if that corrected the problem. Same for any other devices that get out of sync.

Good point I forgot to mention the help button. My wife and kids use that but I'm too manly to ask for any "help"! :)

If I manually turn my TV/Receiver/SciAtl cable box ON ..
Out of interest why do you do that? Is there an activity that requires those units on that is not programmed into the Harmony? As others have noted you can use Help but the best way is always use the Harmony to turn on devices unless you are doing trouble shooting and then you turn them off manually also

I don't, but sometimes my wife or son will turn on the TV manually, or use the Samsung remote (my son know what the red power button looks like). Later in the night when it is "movie time" I go for the remote.
Help button is a good idea, ...also the least used button on my remote.:)
craig_wagner 02-26-09, 02:35 PM Also, most components don't have a discreet power on or power off IR code.
I disagree with the above statement. Out of the five devices my H880 controls, only one does not have discrete on/off codes (the Moto DVR box).
I have a buddy who has a Samsung television and he has discrete on/off codes for his. You might want to go through device setup again. When it gets to the part about power, say there's separate buttons for on and off, then see if the Harmony database contains separate IR commands for on/off.
the Pronto didn't have that problem - my Sony XBR TV just stayed on, so I was expecting my new Samsung to do the same with the Harmony...
This isn't an issue with the remote, it's an issue with the component. You switched out two things (remote and component). For the XBR you probably had discrete power codes for on/off set up in your Pronto. If you find discrete power codes for on/off for the Samsung, you'll get the same behavior.
I don't, but sometimes my wife or son will turn on the TV manually, or use the Samsung remote (my son know what the red power button looks like).
For a lo-tech solution you could hide the Samsung remote and put tape over the power button on the TV. Then train the family that the Harmony is the only remote they should use.
I disagree with the above statement. Out of the five devices my H880 controls, only one does not have discrete on/off codes (the Moto DVR box).
I think it's a matter of YMMV. My Harmony controls 7 devices and only 1 (a Sherwood AVR) has discrete on/off buttons.
Best solution is to hide all the other remotes!

I really do need to see if a separate IR command exists. I"m sure my Pronto had that for my XBR. I only figure out what was going on last night, as the Harmony, TV, and Blu Ray are all new to my living room setup.
As for the remote, I'll eventually get rid of them, but as I work out the kinks in the Harmony it is nice to have it handy and if it is better for my family when I'm not home, I don't want to x them yet (the remote not the family:p)

I don't know if this would work but I'd try a piece of piano black plexiglass.. of couse if it works you could then cut the plexi into any shape you wanted... errr like a Darth Vader helmet??
I have two differenet Activities for Watching TV.
One of the activities involves turning my AV receiver on, setting the correct input and then back off (actually standby). the receiver can pass HDMI in the standby mode.
Not a huge problem but sometimes it doesn't turn the receiver back off. I can go to the Device setting and turn it off. When I use the help, it asks all the questions and when it gets to asking if the receiver is On, I say yes (expecting it to turn it off) but it doesn't.
As I said, I believe everything is configured correctly because it works 75% of the time. Anyone know why the Help isn't really helping?

My guess would be that you need to increase the amount of time before the final shut off command is given to the AVR.
leftheaded 02-27-09, 07:07 PM anyone able to get me going in the right direction??
I find myself using my keyboard more than this remote bc it just doesn't do what i want. namely:
can't go "back" in the VMC menus
can't get back to VMC after I press "stop" on HD movies (powerDVD launched via myMovies)
anyone have VMC configs to share? how are your buttons mapped & do you play HD with powerdvd or the like?
I'm not familiar with the VCM interface, but I don't like the ergonomics of selecting the activities button to navigate "Back". I tried navigating UP first then hitting LEFT hoping it would take me to the previous menu, but it didn't. It keeps me in the sub-menu.
My guess would be that you need to increase the amount of time before the final shut off command is given to the AVR.
Thanks. I will try that and see what it does. Still puzzles me why the remote's help doesn't "fix" this for me.

I currently have a Harmony 680. I've been happy with it although it seems as of late the back button doesn't seem to work quite as sharply as it did before. Sometimes I have to push more then once.
My wife calls me this morning and says Dell, of all people is offering a deal of 20% off on the Harmony 880. I've had my 680 for at least 4 years. Should I upgrade? Outside of the self charger what else would the 880 provide?

I may not be the best one to ask. I also have a 670 (not sure how it differs to your 680) for the bedroom and I like the button layout alot better than the 880. Don't get me wrong, I like the 880 but I got it for a steal.
You really don't gain much as far as I know except for the colored screen and rechargable battery. The screen looks nice but it's not anything special IMO. I do like the rechargable battery. It's nice just to put it on the charger about once a week overnight. Still not a huge advantage but nice.
Sorry if this has been asked, I did a search but couldn't find anything on this
Just got an 880 to try out (I've been a URC fan for years thought I would give Harmony a try)
One thing so far there are only 2 pages for Favorites and I don't seem to be able to find a way to add pages in the Fav section. Is it possible and if so how?

Ron Jones 03-03-09, 01:38 PM I currently have 2 880's plus a couple of less advanced Harmony remotes (i.e., 670 and 520). I need to get one one more remote and I have seen a good deal on a Harmony One, that has essentially replaced the 880 in the Harmony line-up. At first glace the only issue I see with the Harmony One vs. the 880 is it allows only 6 user defined soft keys to be displayed at one time on the LCD display while the 880 allows 8. My 670 also allows 6 soft keys and I find that to be a disadvantage as compared having 8 on the 880. From any of you have own both an 880 and Harmony One what is your overall opinion of one vs. the other.

I've had a 880 for over 2 years & I received a One for Christmas.
The One is a nice remote & is just as easy to setup as the 880 is but....
The IR output is much lower than the 880, with the One I have to point the remote at my gear & the beam can be blocked, the IR on the 880 was super powerful, I could point it the complete opposite direction & my gear would still get the signal.
My biggest gripe is the touch screen, yes it is pretty but it only holds 3 activities per screen & you have to look at the touch screen to make sure you hit the right command, I could use every function on the 880 without looking, the touch screen actually makes the One harder to use!
I'm sure in time I'll get the hang of the One but if I hadn't received it as a gift I wouldn't have bought one myself to replace the 880.
One of my 880's is freaking out again. It won't charge. I called support on the odd chance they can still help. First I'm greeted by the 60 days and no more phone support message. Then I get a tech and he's nice enough to talk to me. He's definitely not in North America, BTW. He takes my info and has me reset the firmware. He gives me a case number. So after resetting the firmware, it does nothing better. I have two 880's (and 2 Ones) and can see by trying that the problem is the 880 not the base. I call warranty support and they're closed. 9-5 Eastern. Boy times have changed. I guess I should be happy he talked to me at all. Luckily my Ones have never exhibited this "feature" but the 880 is a disaster waiting to happen.
Yes I've cleaned the contacts, it's past that.
:(
Beerstalker 03-03-09, 06:20 PM Did you try the 880 in both bases?
Did you clean the contacts on the bottom of the 880 that isn't charging? They can get covered up with gunk from dirty hands, furniture, etc, and not want to charge. Pencil erasers work pretty well for cleaning them off.
Did you try swapping the batteries and seeing if the battery that won't charge in one 880 will charge in the other? (Actually I think the One uses the same batteries too so you could put the battery in the One to see if it would charge also).

I need to get a universal remote and I see the Harmony One is very good from all of the post....but it is a little pricy for me. I have been considering the 880 but I see that there has been reported problems with batteries or charging stations. Does the forum consider this to be a deal killer? Is this a big problem? Are the batteries and or charging station repalceable? Your help would be appreciated

If the One is too pricey then get an 880. I bought an old used 880 and had it at least a year. I would have to fiddle with it to get it to charge from day one. keep in mind, it was used.
After a year or more I finally got around to emailing logitech and after 2 or 3 emails they sent out a new charger that works 100% perfect. No fiddling.
So, my thoughts are if you buy a new 880, I would imaginw the charger issues have been rectified. And if you have an issue with it, I can almost gaurentee they will make it right.

New ones. (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-Advanced-Universal-Control/dp/B00093IIRA/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1236214654&sr=8-1)

With that said, i would have zero issues buying a refurbished one through amazon. This is a good price IMO.

No, it is not a big problem and not it not a deal killer!!!
If you've been reading much of the forum you'll find that some older 880's eventually developed a problem where they did not seat themselves as well in the charger as they did when they were new. Logitech replaced them, even after they were out of warranty. The newer ones have been redesigned. We love or 880 and so do the several relatives households that have them. We recommend them highly and without reservation.
Go for it and enjoy.

I have had no mechanical issues with either of my Ones. The 880 is a constant issue, see above.

I called. Bless their hearts, they're sending me yet another 880. My current 880 is disabled from updating and can be retired/recycled when the new one comes. Even with the ominous sounding new greeting, they took care of the problem. :)
Beerstalker 03-06-09, 03:14 PM BTW I checked last night and the 880 and One do use the same batteries. My 880 charger is unplugged right now so I just swapped the fully charged battery from my One into the 880 and put the dead battery in the One and put the One back on the charger. It's working fine.

One of the most compelling reasons to use their products - oh, and the obvious fact that they make great remotes, too!

I've had my 880 for about 2 yrs and it's working fine. A few quirks but other than that, fine. However, I would like to match it with an Industrologic ir232to rs232 box to control my processor. Apparently the remote needs to work on "12 bit Sony SIRC" which apparently most universal remotes do but I want to make sure the Harmony does. I tried calling Harmony and they were useless ("ir232 is new"--no, it's NOT). This is the first time in about 5 years that Harmony support hasn't been helpful.
Can anyone help me out? Thanks
Clipper125 03-11-09, 02:04 PM I'm having a problem setting the volume control for my Harman Kardon 247 receiver onto my Harmony 880. The Harmony 880 doesn't seem to pick this up automatically when I set up my receiver (device). When I've tried going into learning mode, I can either set the volume up or volume down, but can't set both. I assume that it must be due to the frequency being reversed for this type of function, but am I correct and is there a workaround?
When adding a Blu Ray player, I don't see that as a Device option. Are we supposed to just add it under DVD?
The player is a samsung BD-P2550 if that matters.

Have any of you ever programed the 880 to operate a Magnavox H2160 DVDR machine?
The Mag remote is fairly complex because of the DVD player along with a hard disk to record TV.
The Logitech software doesn't seem to go far enough to get the remote to imitate the OEM remote for this unit.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
generallee 03-13-09, 09:12 AM I am a new Harmony 880 user and have set up my activities and they all seem to work well. My D* is hooked up directly to the TV and also to Optical on my Denon AVR 2309 receiver. If I select the activities for watch tv the Harmony gives me the D* remote activities except the volume which I correctly set up to be controled by the AVR surround.
My question is how, under this activity can I gain the access to the functions of the AVR's remote such as cinima, music, Dolby PLII, menu, OSD?
If I switch to device there are 11 pages and it is slow to try to get through all 11 pages and even then some of the things that I want to do are not there. It would be nice if I could have the additional buttons and also have the one's that I want most reordered so they would come up on page 1
If I set up the AVR under the utility icon all of the tv functions will be terminated
ludawg23 03-13-09, 09:41 AM UPS says my 880 has been shipped to my apartment, cannot wait to set it up.
So I have the website for the custom icons...can someone give me a quick rundown on how it works? Thanks.

Click on the option to Customize Buttons for the Activity associated with watching TV and customize the soft buttons to contains whatever functions you want from whichever device you want.

The functions on the New Denon receivers are Audyssey commands such as Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume, Day, Night etc. When the AV receiver is set up by Harmony it does not include the Audyssey commands and some others that are on the Denon remote. It appears that Harmony and Audyssey may not be working togeather. If there are a way to set up these functions it would be helpful to know how? Also since there are already 11 pages of soft keys under the Denon AVR device, it would be helpful to reorginize the way that these are displayed. Can anybody help?

You can learn any command from your existing remote. You can reorganize the menu items using the little up/down arrows that are next to each item (at least in the desktop software).
I'm at work and don't have the software in front of me. Just poke around the menus a bit and you'll find the options. If memory serves, to use the Learn function you have to go to the Device tab, not the Activity tab. Same for changing the order of the items in the Device softkeys.

You have to email logitech.
Look at this page. Click Here...... (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=14644770#post14644770)
Copy all of the discrete codes and email logitech. Tell them to add these discrete codes to your EXISTING Denon device. If not, they will add them to a new device (or so I've read). It took them about 5 days to put mine on and they send an email to let you know they've been added.
Not sure I can help with the 11 pages. I would imagine there are unnecessary things you do not often use that you can get rid of.

The remote did not learn the keys from the remote. However Harmony tech support added the keys to blank spots 1 through 7 on the device setup and they are now on my remote.

Hi generallee and welcome to the 880 thread. You may recognize my screen name from the Denon 789/1909 thread. It sounds like you may need to go through the basics of the 880 before you get too far into it. The first post in this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=7285760#post7285760) would be a great place to start. It contains links to other Logitech and Harmony-related sites. I would also encourage you to read through the posts in this thread and make sure to use the "Search this thread" tool located in the upper right-hand corner.
Again, welcome to this thread, but I just want to make sure you follow some of the advice given to you in the Denon thread.
Thanks for listening....:)
Florida 03-13-09, 04:03 PM Quick question...has anyone changed remotes? I have an 880 (been dropped to many times) and am replacing it with another 880. How easy are they to swap?
I've never swapped out an 880 but I have two 890's and I only use one online profile. It should be as easy attaching to your new 880 and downloading the configuration.
Since the Logitech's don't seem to bounce well I suspect that I will soon be doing the same as you.
Smitty2k1 03-13-09, 05:58 PM I just want to add my 880 story:
I live in a college apartment with hardwood floors and the 880 has been dropped.... a lot. It is still going strong after over a year of use. The LCD screen is a little washed out (but very legible still) and the remote always displays the wrong time.
With all of that said, I've had issues in the past with the remote charging. I think I'd only had the remote for about 2-3 months when it first started. The remote would regularly die when we thought it was charged and I figured it was just a bad unit. Then I started to notice that it wasn't always beeping when put in its charger. Then I realized it just wasn't charging, but when it did charge it would work fine.
A solution I found was to put a paper towel at the back end of the remote between the charger and remote. If that didn't work I would fold the paper towel in half and try again. Almost always I found a configuration that would work. Every few days (maybe weeks?) the paper towel wouldn't work (or someone would use it to clean up a spilled beer!) and I would just add a new paper towel into the mix.
Eventually I realized that the paper towel was gone, and that the remote was charging 100% of the time. I'd say it has been over 6 months since I've had a problem with charging. The clock is always still off though...
Hopefully my paper towel method helps someone out, maybe it's even magic as it seemed to fix my remote.

ludawg23 03-13-09, 07:46 PM Just set everything up, very user-friendly and I've got it up and running. Even the GF loves it...we no longer have to use 4 remotes. I can't believe I didn't buy one of these earlier.

Quick question, do you guys keep the charging dock plugged in at all times?
phdeane 03-13-09, 07:58 PM Good to hear. Yes, keep on cradle and plugged in when not in use. Been fine for about 3 years for me.

I keep the cradle plugged in (yes it wastes energy, maybe a surge with switch?) for ease, but cradle the remote when needed.

You could put it in a covered box/container with a small hole in the back - the charger/remote, that is, not the cat. The wife probably wouldn't appreciate the cat in the box.

Your posting is a little difficult to fully understand, but I think you are saying that it doesn't work for the activity, but it does when you turn it off via the device, correct?
Okay, assuming that, a couple of comments/questions.
If it works from the device mode, then it should also work when you invoke help, unless you have a power setting set up incorrectly. All help does is ask you a series of questions and then try a given command that is programmed in your activity (which comes from the device), so it's strange help doesn't work.
Is it a toggle on/off or a discrete on and off? I assume the latter as you mentioned "...and press the power off [button]..." You may have set up the power settings for the device incorrectly. Go into the device menu and choose "Adjust power settings." Make sure "I want to turn off this device when it's not in use" is selected. Click "NEXT >" and the next part is critical. Do you have "A button on the remote for On, and a different button for Off" selected? If not, select it. Then go to the next two screens and make sure you have the second option selected (assuming that is the applicable option) in both cases and then make sure the correct command is listed in the drop down boxes.
If that doesn't work, report back and we'll go from there.

Understood, but the device settings can affect activities. Are you saying it goes off without a problem at the end of the activity, but then just comes back on? I would closely check your activities settings by clicking on "Settings" under Activities and then selecting "Review the settings for this Activity." It may have an extra on command being sent. I still think the device power settings may be affecting this.

Not much more to add than what I already have stated. I suppose you could have an issue with inter-key or inter-device delays, but I would start with the "Adjust power settings" in the device menu I mentioned earlier. I still haven't heard what the resolve was for your previous issue.
beekeeper 03-17-09, 06:38 AM I have owned an 880 for about three years, and recently bought another for my wife, since I have made mine do just about everything and wanted her to have a simple setup. I could have simplified mine but then would have had about twelve activities which would have overwhelmed her. She only needs four to do all she wants., so another 880 made sense.
The software that came with the new 880 would have driven me up the wall if I was a new owner. I have directv with its pvr and another dvdr (and VCR and home theater and reciever and cd ...). The harmony setup kept trying to make the dvdr work with watch tv instead of the pvr. Very frustrating. I finally just deferred to its idiocy and went back and deleted all the activities the software set up and set them up myself. So I have great compassion on all those new to the 880 who post here with all their troubles. It would have been a nightmare were I new to the 880.
And, yes, she loves the simplified version of the 880.

Glad to see you got it working. I had a similar issue initially. I spent at least 40 hours getting it all set up, only to find quirky behavior. I tried again and kept it simple. It worked great and then I started to add a few more activities and suddenly had the same issues. This time, however, I called Harmony and spent about two hours on the phone with a level 2 support rep. He got it going and it's been great ever since. By the way, I started with manually entering the devices and activities and yet still had problems.

I can't recall when (or if) you said when you bought it. I would highly recommend you call Harmony support. As I suggested, you could try to tackle the inter-key or inter-device delays (increase both a great deal at first and then dial down to a more reasonable level that still works), but that can be a never-ending battle. Harmony support will get it resolved for you.

I might have to try the same thing, but I'm not sure if the 880 will DO the delays I've asked. I've tried 10 second and 13 second delays before switching inputs, but it appears the 880 gets "tired" of waiting and just won't send the change input signal.

That's strange. While not quite the same situation, I have my 880 wait 30s after powering on the TV before changing inputs. This is because the JVC D-ILA set I have takes that long to warm up :( This works fine.
legierk 03-19-09, 07:37 PM I did find someone else with this issue (post 1627 in '06) but the consensus appeared to be that he should just deal with it or get a replacement.
My volume (up specifically) is getting really hard to activate. I have to apply alot of pressure.
Any ideas out there about what I might try? I've thought about spraying a little electrical connection cleaner/lubricant in the small crevice where the button is and then blowing that out with compressed air. Don't want to go overboard here. And, I'd rather not open it up (unless someone has a confirmed way of fixing this issue by doing so)
Any ideas?

The delays work for me. In your case, you may want to play with the "Input Delay" setting. Just to make sure, you do realize the figures are in milliseconds, so 10 would be 10,000?

Yes. I've watched the little icon that shows the harmony is transmitting on the TV, and after about 4-5 seconds, it won't show. I've set the delay to 13000 msec, and still no joy. It's like the remote thinks, "eh, he won't notice if I don't send the input signal." Which wouldn't BE a big deal, but 30-40% of the time I want a different input that the last one I had.

Okay, then if you haven't already done so, try "re-ordering" the TV device to come on first (or close to first). That may give it enough time to react to the input command more consistently. [Upon further reflection, this may not work. The 880 would probably just send the input command right after the power command is sent, regardless of what order the device power on is in the activity.] You could also add an extra command ("Custom Actions") within the activity that resends the input signal at the end of the particular activity. This would be best done with discrete input commands, but if you don't have them, it could still be done. Another thought is a dummy device with a power on command that further delays the activity.
If all this doesn't work, then simply add the discrete inputs (assuming you have them) into the first page of your activity. That way, when there is the occasional misfire, you can quickly go to the input you want.
There are other options, but perhaps you could try those first.

From what I've read on the forums, no. When Logitech replaces a remote they disable the remote being replaced so it can no longer receive programming information from the site.
I heard that also. It explains why they can have such a generous replacement policy and not require you ship the bad unit back to them.
I have found my 880 and Harmony CS (both hardware and software) excellent and a model for other CE companies to follow. My 880 has been fine but I did have a new charging bay sent to me at no cost.
Upgraded from the 520 which I loved and had for three years and moved to my wife's system. When Amazon had the refurb 880 priced right, could not resist.
1. Have a couple of "pause (||) signs next to my TV and HR20 icons on both web site setup and LCD. Thought these were a sign of something wrong, Tech support person said "no, they're normal." Believe he's mistaken. Any way to get rid of those short of redoing everything?
2. Plastic piece came off of the usb cable. Still seems to work. Is this an issue? Do I need to request a replacement?
Ive had my 880 for over a year now and love it. Just ran into my first real problem with it though and wanted to ask if it's shot and needs to be replaced or is perhaps something fixable.... After recently charging it, it seems the controller has lost its signal strength and stopped working for all components within the room; unless I moved to within 1-2 feet of that component.

1. Are you referring to the device names? If so, then yes you can change those within the software.
2. Are you talking about the ferrite core (cylindrical part attached to the cable)? If so, that is to help with eliminating radio frequency interference. I wouldn't worry about it.
phdeane 03-23-09, 03:51 PM Ive had my 880 for over a year now and love it. Just ran into my first real problem with it though and wanted to ask if it's shot and needs to be replaced or is perhaps something fixable.... After recently charging it, it seems the controller has lost its signal strength and stopped working for all components within the room; unless I moved to within 1-2 feet of that component.
I've had my 890 for over three years and haven't had the issue. I assume the battery is taking a full charge. If not, report back. Is there a chance of some signal interference? If another infrared device is being used at the same time, it can interfere with the 880. From time to time, I have a remote get stuck in the couch and emit a signal that interferes. I suppose other interference could cause problems, too.
edit: by the way, nice theater!
Thanks. Thought so about the ferrite core. Not sure about the icon issue. I know I can rename devices. I'll try that and see if it works. But I think the icon issue may be something different -- an incomplete or inaccurate setting. Everything works great, just messes up the lcd screen. Both HR 20 and Tivo (devices) are just orange blobs with the little "pause" marking.

Okay, now I see you are speaking of the actual icon. You can turn off the icons and have text only.
Go into Remote Settings > Select a Theme > Harmony No Icons

Nothing interferring with the remote signal that I can think off. It is fully charged although I did let it sit on the charger for a few weeks which is something that Ive never done in the past but I think that is completly concidencal and unlikely to be the problem. Anyway it is charged and works fine as long as I get within a foot of each component.
I dont mind replacing equipment but it does seem strange that it didnt gradually decline in perfomance and at the same time didnt actually die.
By the way thanks for the room compliments and also the fast reply.

Okay, if you are sure interference is not the issue, then I would suggest you call Harmony support (or e-mail, but it takes a day or two), and tell them of your plight. I am pretty confident they will replace your remote. Many of us have been successful getting replaced remotes and / or chargers well past our warranties.

Warranties.... ehhh gaddsss does that mean one of those card things I probably never ever filled out and sent in :D
I'll go double check the room for anything that might be causing interference but honestly I know nothing else is running and all the original remotes in the room still work without problems.

No worries; not sending in the card makes no difference. I've never even had to present a receipt and I've had two remotes and a charger replaced. They replaced one of my remotes even after I dropped it in the bathtub (long story :o).
The key words are "all the original remotes in the room still work without problems," so interference seems unlikely now. It's just strange that it lost strength. I could understand if the battery was low, but it's just a little infrared LED in there.
Maybe I'm nuts, but my issue is with the icons I see when I go to devices (which I rarely need to do). The icons for both my HR20 and Tivo are orange blobs with a pause (||) sign over them instead of what I see when I log into my account which is a dvr type icon. Is their standard icon (the orange blob) correct?

Okay, let's see if we can tackle it this way. I turned the Harmony Default theme back on, added a TiVo device, and took a screen shot of how it looks in the software and how it looks on the remote itself. Do your icons look the same as these?

Yes ... that is what they look like in both cases. Guess that's what they're supposed to look like and it's normal. But it seems that Logitech should replace the orange blob from the remote device screen with the dvr-type icon from the online device screens.
Thanks phdeane. At least you set my mind at ease. Appreciate the feedback.

Happy to help. I was hoping the screen shots would get us on the same page. Take it from someone who has had the 890 (RF version of the 880) for quite some time, you should change the theme to Harmony No Icons. In my opinion, you will find that the icons don't really add any value and they only make the text (the important part of the activity and device) much harder to read - as you are experiencing. Often times the icons don't even make sense of the activity or device anyway.
I'm sure you're right and will do that after the novelty wears off. Upgraded from 520, as I mentioned, and for the moment, it's different. But the low res and the orange blob don't cut it. Thanks again for the info. This forum and dbstalk, have saved my video life.
Monktrump 03-28-09, 02:54 PM Just finished setting up my 880 along with the IR4PS3 and WOW, very nice contol.
With the IR4PS3 attached, I can even control the PS3 with the romote that came with my Sony HT-SS2300 reciever.
I dont have any issues with the 880 so far and delay times seem good with just an initial setup of my activities and devices.
I did go back and re-assign some buttons though.
All Systems go.
(the remote does seem light and doesnt really "feel" like 100 bucks ..lol )
My Setup:
PS3 >> HDMI>> SS2300
SA8300HD STB >>>HDMI >>>SS2300
SS2300 >> HDMI >> Samsung HL67A750 1080p HDTV
Controlled by :
Harmony 880 and IR4PS3 (for full IR control of PS3 and works GREAT)
susquehannabooks 03-28-09, 04:13 PM Not sure what I am doing wrong. I have a Popcorn Hour A-110 and an activity set up to PLAY POPCORN. But it never chooses the right input on my Pioneer VSX-84TXsi. Should be HDMI 4 but always chooses some other HDMI input. If I use the help command it will eventually get me to HDMI 4. Even if it starts on HDMI4 it will change it to something else. I have tried going through the troubleshoot of this activity. Says there is an update for the device which I haven't done yet. Eventually I get to "What would you like to correct about this device's inputs". Not sure is this is where I need to be or what I need to do from here. Any suggestions?

Sounds like the 880 isn't programmed correctly for HDMI4. You can check easily enough
1. Turn on the TV and the amp
2. Press the devices button and select the Pioneer
3. See if on the soft buttons there is a button labelled HDMI4. If there is one, press it and see if the amp goes to HDMI4? If not then that's your problem. If it does, then it's likely the activity you are programming to watch you PCH isn't programmed to choose HDMI4
susquehannabooks 03-28-09, 11:24 PM Thanks lchiu7. You might be on to something. When I try the soft button for HDMI4, it behaves erratically. Sometimes it will put it on HDMI3, sometimes HDMI2, and sometimes HDMI4. All the other soft buttons seem to work okay. I thought maybe I could have the 880 just relearn the HDMI4 command but the Pioneer remote doesn't have a separate button for each input- just one input button that scrolls through them all. Is there a way around this? Or should I choose "update the device" from the troubleshooting area? Might that fix the problem?

Do you have other activities that use the Pioneer VSX-84TXsi in which the input is selected correctly? If so, then as lchiu7 said, it is the activity that is set up wrong (not set up to select the HDMI4 input). If not, then it could be the device is set up wrong.
Also, when you say "All the other soft buttons seem to work okay," does that include other inputs? In other words, are there any other device (Pioneer VSX-84TXsi) commands that directly select an input correctly? What I'm trying to see is if you have any discrete input commands set up for the TV, or if the TV even has discretes.

That could be the problem - your Pioneer remote has no ability to send a discrete command for setting an input (quite annoying but also quite common).
The Harmony remotes do have a way around this
1. Often earlier model units from the same brand will have discrete codes that will work with current models. They are often loaded into the Harmony database and can be loaded into your Harmony
2. Much klunkier and this might explain your behaviour. The Harmony always remembers which input was last set on the AVR (I am thinking this is an AVR and not a TV that is causing you problems). Then when you select HDMIn (n=1,2,3,4) it "knows" what was last selected and sends the appropriate number of next input commands to get to the desired input. So it can get out of sync quite easily and why Help often fixes it.
In the programming part of the Harmony I do recall there is a section for how inputs are selected (discrete codes, cycle through or on screen display and select). You need to choose the mode that suits your AVR

All of my other activities use the Pioneer. The input was being selected correctly for all but the Popcorn activity, but now I notice the PS3 activity also won't select the right input (HDMI2). It seems to not change the input at all. This was working okay before. As an aside, I also notice that the IR indicator on the screen (the 3 curved lines at the top) for the PS3 activity only always stay on- not just for a few seconds like all the other activities.
When I use the device commands for the Pioneer, all of the other inputs are correctly selected except for HDMI4. It seems to be selecting the next highest HDMI input when I hit it. For example, if the receiver is on HDMI1, if I hit the HDMI4 button, it will go to HDMI2. If I hit the HDMI4 button again, it scrolls through HDMI inputs.

Larry,
I tried your last idea about how the inputs are selected on the original remote. It will now choose the right input but will scroll through all the other inputs to get to it. So if the receiver is on HDMI4 and I want to watch TV which is on HDMI1, it scrolls all the way through everything to get to it. It wasn't this way before. It used to just go straight to the right input. Now what?

books - I believe your receiver does have discrete input codes; you just may have to add another Pioneer AVR device to get to them. Often times higher model numbers have other codes that work fine on lower model numbers. I temporarily added the Pioneer VSX-94TXH device and I see multiple input codes such as InputHDMI1, InputHDMI2, InputHDMI3, etc., but I cannot test for obvious reasons. Here is what you need to do to test. First, add the VSX-94TXH device and don't add it yet to any activities. The InputHDMI1, 2, etc. codes will be available in the soft key custom buttons (LCD screen) part of the remote. Under device mode, locate and try each code and see if the AVR changes directly to the input. I believe it will.
If it does, you have a couple choices. One is you can simply add the second Pioneer AVR device to all activities. That can be a pain, so I would suggest you e-mail Logitech and ask them to specifically add each of the codes (InputHDMI1, 2, etc.) to your current VSX-84TXsi.
Now, understand that you still may have the activity set up incorrectly. If the discrete input codes above work, then you need to tell both the device and the activity to properly select inputs the discrete inputs.
Under Devices, for the Pioneer VSX-84TXsi (assuming Logitech added the discrete buttons to that AVR), click on "Settings" and then select "Adjust inputs" and then click on Next. Choose Method 2 and click on Next. Find the correct input, select it and click on Next. In that next screen, make sure the Source input matches the correct Remote button (the discrete input Logitech added to your VSX-84TXsi). If not, adjust.
Under Activities, for the given activity (or activities), click on "Settings" and then "Review the settings for this Activity." Next select "Yes, but I want to add more control of options and devices for this Activity," and then "Save." Scroll through the next few screens and when you get to the one that asks you about your Pioneer AVR, make sure the proper input is selected.
I know this is a lot to swallow, but I believe this will fix your problem. If not, or if this is too much, then simply call Logitech. They will get your account set up correctly.
Larry,

Hmm - ok it seems like the Harmony codes for you AVR are not quite right. I would do the following.
1. Reprogram the Harmony to use discrete codes (downloading from their database)
2. Once that is done, press Device on the Harmony and try each soft button for each HDMI input. See which one always works (from what you said last time HDMI4 is a bit random).
3. If there is one that works all the time (let's hope it's say HDMI3) then program HDMI4 to be select HDMI3 and then Input Next. That should take way less time than scrolling all the way through the inputs.
I can't recall if a user can do that programming or you need Logitech to do it for you but I know for my TV, I have no code for Video 4 (which is HDMI) so Video 4 is chosen by a discrete code for Video 3 and then Input Next
Hope that helps

hummer1823 04-02-09, 04:46 PM Just got my 880 yesterday. Its amazing. Works like a charm.
Its running a KDL-46Z4100 - Dtv H23/700 - Onkyo TX-DS676
All with no issues. It even turns the Onkyo into standby mode which most universals wouldn't do.
Now i cant wait for the PS3 adapter! :D

sstanfie 04-03-09, 11:55 PM I have 2 activities setup... Watch TV and Watch DVD. Each time I select either of these on the remote, it wants to set my tv to input HDMI1 which is correct, but the thing is, whenever you select an input on the tv, there's quite a long pause on the tv and nothing is displayed. During the wizard in setting up these 2 activities, it forces you to select an input on the tv. I never change the input on my tv, so there's no need for me to always select input HDMI1. Is there anyway to setup these activities without having the tv select an input?
Thank you.

Go to your TV device and click on settings, change the input settings and set the command for HDMI 1 to -none-. This will make it so it no longer sends out the command to switch the inputs.

mahdlokg 04-08-09, 12:40 PM Hey Harmony users! I haven't picked up a Harmony yet, but have a question before I do. I know everyone enjoys easy to use features like "watch TV" so that even the Mrs.....eerrrr I mean technically challenged can use them. My question is this:
Can you program the remote to have two watch TV options: one for TV only and one for TV + the whole amp/pre/pro or receiver setup?
Is the watch TV a part of the entire Harmony line or just the Harmony One?
I am looking at getting my feet wet with the 670 that is available cheap at several places, and then using that unit in the bedroom when I upgrade to a One later on? I've seen some good reviews on the 670, but realize it is an older unit. Would you all agree that the 670 wouldn't be too bad of an investment for a first universal remote? Thanks.
SnellKrell 04-08-09, 12:49 PM I can't talk about the 670 - don't own one.
But on my 880 and 720 I have each of them set for Watch TV - audio from TV set, and a separate Activity - Watch TV Surround - using my amplifier and processor.
With my Harmonys I can name an Activity whatever I choose.
Hope this helps.

Yes, it will work on the 670. Here is a post from another thread that explains how similar all the Harmony remotes are:
the only difference between the different Harmony remotes is
1. the button layout
2. the style of the LCD screen (i.e. number of buttons, color vs. monochrome, etc.)
3. rechargeable batteries w/ docking cradle vs. regular batteries
What is a "better" choice is personal preference. When they released the 670, they said it was "optimized for DVR's" but that only means that the transport buttons (play, pause, FF, RW, etc) are grouped towards the top around the d-pad where your thumb would go naturally when holding the remote.
So it's not really better vs. worse, it's just what you like better. I personally started out with an 880, and then switched to a 670 because I absolutely hated the clickity-clackity of the buttons on the 880 and the poor ergonomics of the button layout. For me, the 670 was much better, but either does the same thing really.
The 880's biggest advantage is rechargeable batteries + eight buttons on the LCD screen vs. six on the 670.
Here is a nice thread on Harmony remotes and the different options / layouts:

Does this happen every time? Has it always happened? Do you (or the gremlins in your house) ever turn the box on manually, or do you always use the Harmony remote? If you manually power on or off, the remote gets confused and doesn't know the power status of your cable box. This assumes you are using a toggle on/off command on the remote and that the box doesn't have a discrete (separate) on and off. What is a little strange is that it is turning it on first and then off. Does this happen every time, too?

So she went to turn the tv off manually (why, I don't know) and the littlest one going on 2 in the summer saw her do it, and that was it. now he thinks it's funny to rub his little paw up and down the bezel looking for the button....

Yep, I have one starting to walk and two older ones, so I'm very familiar with the little critters - fortunately, most of my stuff (ugh! except my PS3 that has to be out of the cabinet as it runs too hot) is out of reach.
Got me a second 880 for the bedroom and mirrored the living room activities and buttons they both work the same. The wife is loving it.
putox1051 04-16-09, 10:13 AM I've loaded 600 cd titles and 400 dvd titles for 3 changers in my systems. The media button allowed access to these titles up until 3 or 4 months ago when it suddenly stopped working. Harmony told me about a glitch in their server that they were trying to fix that caused this problem. It's been 3 or 4 months and still no solution. Anyone else had this problem?
I want to make sure that I do not need any grievous mistake
I currently have an 880 remote. The up on the directional keypad stopped working out of no where. I opened to make sure no dust or anything causing an issue, and can't see a problem.
I reassigned the up function to the up/down arrows just below the directional pad, but that got tiresome having to remember to hit another key to cursor up on my DVR.
So I jut bought a used 880 Pro on Ebay.
The main question is, will I be able to just connect and update the remote with my current codes/activities that are already on my Logitech software on my PC?
The media fuction was broken during a server update in Dec., the expected fix is in May(wow quick fix). Check the Harmony remote forum for the actual time this happens.
I was lucky enough to have read about the problem before I updated my remote so mine still works but believe me you are not alone
generallee 04-20-09, 10:46 AM I installed the Harmony remote software from CD and my virus protection warned me that the Logitech software installed MSXML 4.exe which had a security vulnerability and directed me to Microsoft where a patch was available. Apparenty MSXML 4. was from Microsoft Office. Why is Logitech shipping CD's with old software that hackers can use?
RobertR1 04-21-09, 02:55 AM I've had my 880 for a few years now. It's never been perfect but it's worked great 95% of the time. However, it seems to be getting bad lately. It'll reset often and thus I have to pick the activity again and put my hand over the front so the equipment doesn't start power cycling. A few times, it's locked on the "initializing" screen to the point I have to remove the battery. Is my remote simply on it's way out?
xboxFreak 04-21-09, 09:58 AM Has anyone found a way to add a command to an activity that would set an AVR to a specific volume. Say for example that I wanted to have my Onkyo AVR set volume to 25 when using the "Watch Movie" activity...
mmmccall 04-21-09, 12:10 PM I won't list the price, but amazon has a great price on refurbished 890's and it says it comes with the rf extender. If this is true, its a steal. Anybody tried this purchase and if so, can you confirm it comes with the extender? Any problems with the remote?
xboxFreak 04-21-09, 12:53 PM What remote controlled dimmer switch is compatible with the Harmony remotes? I was looking at some of the X10 stuff and the compatibility checker says they are either not compatible or not in the database... Or is there a better way to control the lighting? I was mainly looking at the X10 stuff because it seemed that it was an easy setup, only needing to swap out the wall plates...

That would be a function of the receiver, not of the remote. If your receiver supports it then you can do it easily. If you rreceiver doesn't support it, you can't do it.
omegat3 04-21-09, 01:56 PM Does anyone know if there is a means (other than a sequence) to have the 880 set the AV Mode (Dynamic, Cinema, etc) of a Sharp LC-42D62U LCD?

Our 670 does it. I can change it manually anyway. One of the options on the LCD screen is AVMode for the device, and it changes it on our LC52D64U. I assume the D62 works the same??? If you wanted it part of the "Watch Movie" Activity you would have to add it into the sequence... HTH
something else to keep in mind... your LCD TV remembers what the AV Mode is set to for each input, once you set it once you should't have to anymore. That is unless you are using multiple devices on the same TV input...

That's the issue. I can change it manually using the AVMode button but would prefer to automate it so that different devices use a different setting on the same input. U-Verse is significantly darker than the PS3 (which has been calibrated with DVE Blu Ray). Currently I am using different inputs on the TV to get around the issue but would like to go back to one HDMI into the TV from the receiver. I was hoping there may be alternate (discrete) codes available that I could pass along to Logitech support.

Babaganoosh 04-23-09, 12:14 AM A couple of questions:
- When controlling an AppleTV, is there any way to have the Harmony choose a menu item directly (Movies, TV, Photos, etc.)?
- Is there any way to get ahold of an 885 in the U.S.? I like the colored buttons; the 885 seems to be the only Harmony that has them. (Why is that, by the way?)
remoteshoppe 04-23-09, 12:24 AM Unfortunately there is no direct navigation to the menu options on the Apple TV.
Many European remotes have the colored buttons because they're necessary for use with the cable boxes they use. A lot of DVRs and DirecTV receivers are starting to use these as well so they may become more popular. You may be able to find the 885 on eBay or Amazon but there is no normal distribution for it here in the US
According to this thread (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?p=2063111#post2063111) over at DBSTalk, newer DirecTV HD equipment now supports remote control codes for ~8 receivers per remote.
Do the Harmony remotes allow this now too? (I know they supported the 2 code capability that had been around for a couple years; the 8 code capability from Directv is a recent upgrade.)
Beerstalker 04-25-09, 03:11 AM They probably don't have the codes in the database yet, but you could always just learn them all yourself using the DirecTV remote.
Babaganoosh 04-26-09, 01:49 AM I just happened to be browsing the settings for my 'AppleTV' activity. When I tell the Harmony software to go to Settings > Review the Settings for this Activity, there's a message saying that the Harmony can't control the AppleTV (or as Harmony calls it, the Media Center PC). Yet this is obviously false, as the Harmony *can* and *does* control it. Why would it say it can't control the AppleTV when it obviously can?
I think I bricked my 880... :(
After recharging the remote, it now doesnt work to control any device unless I am very close (6"-1') from whatever device/component i'm trying to control. I didnt seem to get much of a response about this specific issue on here so I presume its time to replace it.
Now that im looking to upgrade, what model is recommended or new models have recently come out?

Why dont you try to plug it in to your PC and update it and see if does anything.
For a new remote, if you're looking to stay in the logitech family the One is the newest one, or if your looking for RF then the 890 or 1000 would do.

Thanks & I will try your suggestion but I doubt it is a software problem if it was software I would think it would have stopped all together instead it still works when close to a component (such as 6" close but it then works)
Has anyone heard about new models being released? There is another thread in this forum started this week saying the 890 is now being declared as "discontinued" at different retailers now; hence my question about newer model(s).

I'll never forget when I had a problem with mine Logitech told me to take it to the store and exchange it, even though it was way past the 30 day return policy. They were sure the store would agree but I didn't think the store would be too agreeable.
So I just bought a new one and returned it with the old remote in the box. I didn't even feel bad about doing that because Logitech didn't want to do anything about my problem.

I contacted them and within 24 hours I got a response that another replacement was being shipped. This one works. I was also out of warranty which surprised me that they would replace it.

That is surprising... I recently contacted them about issues I was having with the volume + button. It sounded like they were going to replace it but in the end all they offered was 50% off a new remote as I was out of warranty. Perhaps I should have pressed them a bit more.

I made it clear that I was returning it because it was defective so if they sold it to someone else that's their bad.
Do you think Worst Buy was going to agree to give me a new remote when it had been several months after the return period expired? Worst Buy is not known for their customer service you know.
I took Logitech's advice. I went back to the store and got it replaced. But I avoided the headache that would have come with their advice to ask for a replacement. I tried to go through Logitech but they passed the problem on to me.
After I make a stink about it at Wrost Buy and get denied, then what am I supposed to do? I'm stuck with a defective product. There's really no loser in the way I handled it and if Logitech would have been willing to fix the problem I wouldn't have had to do this.
If any of you think Worst Buy would have gladly exchanged a defective product after many months then you either have had very little experience with their CS or you have an unusually helpful store manager. They've got a class action lawsuit because they reward their employees for denying price matches that are in their printed policies. I can only imagine what their response would have been to my request for an exchange.

a) You'll never know because you didn't even bother to try.
b) If you hate Best Buy so much, stop shopping there. I get so tired of seeing people try to be 'cute' with the names of places ("Worst Buy", how original) and yet they continue to spend their money there. Amazon, buy.com, TigerDirect, onecall, and dozens of other retailers carry electronics.

Lame & self serving.
Logitech told you to take it back there & replace it, well guess what, I had the same thing happen to me.
I bought a 880 for my Dad for fathers day after 3 months the volume + button messed up.
they told me the quickest way to take care of the problem was to return it to Best Buy for an exchange.
I'm guessing that BB & Logitech have some kind of agreement worked out because they swapped it out with no drama at all.
You just earned an EPIC FAIL!!
mcg1275 05-01-09, 09:38 AM I have my projector (Epson 6100) setup with the two 'power off' toggles but when I turn an activity off, the projector will not shut off. When I go through the help menu, the projector correctly shuts off.
I think it may be a delay problem as I originally had it setup as follows on turn on:
1) Projector
2) Receiver
3) DVD Player
When I shut off this activity, I would not get the projector screen reminding me to press off button again.
Then I reordered the turn on steps:
1) Projector
2) DVD Player
3) Receiver
Now I get the projector screen reminding me to press off button again but it seems the second 'power off' toggle is getting interupted.
Am I on to something & does anyone have advice for my problem?
xboxFreak 05-01-09, 12:31 PM does anyone use any of the Harmony Remotes with a Power Conditioner/Surge Protector, to power it on and off. Most likely the Harmony Remote is sending out the two PowerOff commands too close together and your Projector is only responding to one of them. You may need to increase the inter key delay for your Projector device, or contact Harmony support and ask them to insert a delay command in between your two PowerOff commands.

Thanks for the reply. It shuts off fine w/ the Help menu so I would thing the inter-key delay would be ok. My hunch is that shutting off the receiver (& interupting the HDMI video signal to the projector) so quickly after the "power off' toggles to the projector is a probable cause to the problem. Is there a yat to delay right after the two projector 'power off' commands?

Warranty on the 880 is 1-year. If you've only had it five months you should still be covered under warranty.

If the warranty was only 90 days then you bought a refurbished unit. I'm sure Amazon clearly labeled it that way and that is why you got it at some very good price. Sad that you've had the problem, but unless Amazon decides to do something about it you've probably already gotten as good a deal as you're going to get. And fifty percent off a new unit, isn't a bad deal. It may also be a refurbished unit and you'll want too understand the warranty that comes with it.

I can certainly understand that but I paid good $ for a product that has only lasted 5 months and the company should rectify this. This thread is full of folks who have had their defective remotes replaced a year AFTER the warranty with no issue. %50 off a product I wont buy again is completely unacceptable.

Unless they've changed the warranty for refurbished in the past 6 months, it should have had a 1 year warranty also.
I purchased two refurbs from amazon about 9 months ago and they both had issues with the charger contacts. Logitech replaced both with brand new ones with no incident.
If it is still under warranty you should press them further.
If the warranty really was changed to 90 days, then that really sucks.
EDIT: It looks like they did reduce it down to 90 days for refurbs.

They do roll like that. Sometimes it takes a bit but in the end Logitech usually makes the customer happy. I'm one of the people who's had an 880 replaced way out of warranty. That's why I have four current Harmony remotes and 5 overall (one finally did meet its maker.)

jayoldschool 05-07-09, 10:26 AM I also had an 880 replaced for the Vol+ problem that was long past warranty. It took some talking, and they made a few offers before I finally got a replacement for shipping price only. Important to note is that I had rated my "5 stars" online in the Harmony software, and they specifically mentioned that was a factor in the replacement.
annenoe 05-11-09, 04:03 PM So I accidently cleared out the original remote for my DirecTV DVR. It was like a brick - no response - and at the same time, the 880 stopped working as well (tho' it worked on all other devices).
I managed to reset my DVR remote but can't get the 880 to respond. I tried setting up a brand new activity - that didn't work. It's like the 880 still thinks it's the old, broken remote.
Any ideas? I tried Troubleshoot: Device is not responding to any commands and yes, I have the original remote so I get to the window where I'm supposed to put the two remotes together. Sorry to be blunt, but the directions on that page are a POS.
I put the two devices together, plug in the harmony. Then I'm told to "press the 'powerToggle' and "hold the button on the original remote until the command is learned" which is nice except I have *NO IDEA* what I'm waiting for. I sit there pushing the power toggle for 1 minute and nothing happens. I don't get any message - I don't know if it's learning, if it's broken. No user feedback whatsoever.
I think this is what I need to do but I can't figure out how to get it to work.
Any help would be appreciated.

Let me see if I understand clearly? are you sending the power off from the device page? If so then the activity set up wont know the TV is off. they're 2 separate set ups. Manual shutting the tv wont affect the activity set up unless you add it to the set up like you said... In a situation like this its either tv on or tv off right from the activity. or you can just manually turn tv on when ever you want to look at something on the screen. just delete turn tv on on the activity and add 'power on tv' on your listen to ipod activity in one of the pages then that way you can turn on and off the tv to your pleasure. ;)

Adding the PowerOff to the startup sequence is also not a good idea because it adds an unnecessary power cycle to the TV.
Why don't you just create two separate activities...
"iPod w/o TV" (don't include TV in activity)
"iPod w/TV" (include TV).
Use the first normally and the second when you need the on-screen display. You should be able to freely switch between activities and only the TV would be affected by the activity switch. The remote will keep track of all power states this way.
blazeblaze 05-11-09, 06:08 PM So I accidently cleared out the original remote for my DirecTV DVR. It was like a brick - no response - and at the same time, the 880 stopped working as well (tho' it worked on all other devices).
If both remote control devices stopped working at exactly the same time, that could mean that your DirecTV DVR is no longer responding to remote commands.
tjw0390 05-11-09, 06:36 PM Adding the PowerOff to the startup sequence is also not a good idea because it adds an unnecessary power cycle to the TV.
I think this will have to be the solution. Thanks for the reply.

+1 ti's true. I should have thought of that!!!
phdeane 05-11-09, 07:15 PM So I accidently cleared out the original remote for my DirecTV DVR.

I believe the DirecTV DVRs allow for two separate remote controls (to allow two boxes in the same room). Is there a chance the DVR was switched to the other codes?
annenoe 05-13-09, 12:03 AM I believe the DirecTV DVRs allow for two separate remote controls (to allow two boxes in the same room). Is there a chance the DVR was switched to the other codes?
To clarify my problem...
I accidently cleared my remote. At the time that happened, both the original remote and the 880 stopped working, i.e., no commands received. The other devices worked on the 880. But this all happened in 1 minute. One minute everything works, I reset the factory remote, nothing works.
After finding something online, I found out how to reset my original remote. As soon as I reset it, it started to work, i.e., the DVR is now receiving commands from the factory remote. All is as it should be...
But, the 880 still doesn't work.
I tried to recreate the activity on the 880 from scratch but that didn't work. I tried to "relearn" the remote (thinking that somehow, the reset of the remote has changed it *so fundamentally*, that the 880 has to be completely wiped out and started fresh).
But to recap, original remote and DVR work great. All other activities on the 880 work great. The 880 won't work with DVR.

Yes, I understood what you were saying, but perhaps I didn't say it very clearly myself. Forgive me if you did and I'm just not understanding your most recent post. I'll put it in terms of a question. Do you know if your DirecTV DVR has two separate remote codes (or code sets)? For example, if someone has two identical DVRs in the same room and they want to control them separately, they are out of luck if the remote controls both DVRs simultaneously. Therefore, some manufacturers (and I believe this applies to the DirecTV DVRs) have either a switch on the DVR (or some do so electronically) that lets you choose remote code set 1 or 2 (or whatever they call it). If yours is electronic, there is a chance that when you cleared it out, it reset back to the default code set. It sounds like you now have the original DVR remote and the DVR on the same code set, as the signals are working. But what about the 880? Is there a chance that the remote codes stored in your 880 were for the other code set? This would explain why your 880 doesn't work with the DVR but does with other devices. Another question? When you push a button on the 880 (in the DVR device or activity for the DVR) do you see the signal on the 880 to show the command is transmitting?
Again, forgive me if this is not the situation, but perhaps you could confirm that your DVR does NOT have the two code sets, or, if it does, switch the DVR to the other one to see if that gets the 880 working again.
I hope that makes sense; just trying to help.

Phdeane,
Sorry if I sounded testy. Just hearing my frustration. Understand about multiple DVRs (I actually use the 880 to control both a tivo and a directv dvr).
But I finally figured it out. Just before I reset the original remote, I also switched it to work with RF instead of IR. I tested it in RF mode and it worked. Then I reset it. It never dawned on me that that would have any effect on the 880. So when everything broke and the 880 stopped working, I attributed it to the fact that I reset it, *not* that I switched it to RF. I'm an old coder, I should have remembered. How many times have I heard "I only changed this one line of code and now it doesn't work".
So I reset the original to IR and now everything is working again. So when I was trying to fix my 880 and relearn the codes from the original remote, it would appear I was sending RF and I'm guessing the 880 didn't understand. As soon as I reset the original to IR, it was able to learn.
Make sense?
Anyway, thanks for your help.

Stryker412 05-14-09, 05:15 PM How do I add a new device to the database? I bought a new TV which is not in the database yet. I wanted to add all the remote functions to the database for other users, but the software just keeps trying to find the best match.
hi everybody,
I have a Samsung LCD tv, DirecTV box and a Philips DVR.
Two questions -
1. When the power Off button is pressed, it only shuts down the TV, not DVR. Why?
2. When I switch back to Watch TV activity after watching DVD, the DVD player does not power off. Why?
thanks a lot

Go into the Harmony software and check the power settings for each device in each activity.
Hi -
I have an 880 for about 16-17 months now. All was fine until yesterday evening. The remote basically stopped working and this is what I have done based on what I have read here and at the Logitech forums.
Updated the remote through the software
Updated the firmware through the software
Removed and reinserted the battery
I did the digital camera check and it looks like the LEDs are both firing - the LED screen shows the icon that a signal is being sent as well. After the firmware update my components turned on and then the remote was unresponsive unless I came to within 6-12" of the component - then it worked. The battery icon shows a full charge and I generally out it on the charging cradle after I'm done with it for the night.
I put in an email request to Logitech as the person on the phone wouldn't talk to me until I did that first. Has anyone had a similar combination of symptoms where the remote seemingly works but has no range?!
Thanks!!

Same issues here and about the same lifespan, after recharging the remote (no updates) it became unresponsive to all components unless the remote is held like 6" from the component. I have no resolution other then ive been searching for what new remote I want the wife to get me for fathers day :)

Thanks! At least it's good to know that I am not alone! I guess I'll likely be looking for a replacement too. It sucks that for the $$ though that the failure rate seems to be high after a relatively short time of use.
If ya look at post #5413, thats where I started complaining about the same thing, so Im not to far ahead of ya... lol
What I cant get over though is the fact that it does work when close to the components. I could picture it busting and not working at all or even a slow degrading process but to go from perfectly ok to that seems odd to me at least.

I've had mine for about 3 years, but do not have the issue. Of course, I'm mostly using RF (890), but IR seems fine. Have you tried swapping out the battery? I realize it shows full charge, but perhaps it registers full charge, but is actually very weak? Also, have you tried cleaning the IR emitters on the remote? Lastly, are you having the same signal degradation for all components?

It is cleaned and no I dont think it is the battery since it works fine when close to components plus the digitial on the remote it self seems at full strength. Also it is the same for all components including some that are not close to each other at all (such as equipment rack in the back of the room, front light switches etc)

For me it is all components. Where could I get a new battery? Logitech or Radioshack? I can clean the battery terminals but not sure how to clean the IR emitters.
Thanks!

An end-of-life battery could exhibit full strength on the remote, work fine up close, but work poorly from a distance. Unfortunately, it may not be a quick test to get a spare battery. It would be interesting to know if this works, though. I have not seen a great deal of posts with this issue, but there have been some.

newegg.com, eBay, Amazon, or Logitech. I don't think RadioShack would have it, but I could be wrong. The only problem is if it doesn't fix it and you intend to buy something else (the One), I don't know if the 880/890
battery will work in it.
I also recall reading once that someone got a BLB-2 battery on eBay for less than $10.

Aside from you and the other person who responded saying they've had the same problem it seems very rare. Among the four remotes owned by us and family members over a much longer period of time none have experienced the problem.
Have you tried contacting Logitech via the support link on their website or via the Forum accessible form their support website?

Yes I have contacted them - just tried their safe mode suggestion. In reading the remote control forum it seems that there are a number of other problems similar to but not exactly like mine. Still I would expected it to have lasted longer than 16 months.

Just an update - Logitech through my email communications with them determined that my problem was a hardware failure but since I am 5 months out of warranty cannot offer a replacement. They gave me the 50% discount option off any remote in their web store - I guess that's not a terrible outcome. I think as a replacement I may try the Harmony One - our friend has one and really likes it and it looks a little friendlier from an ergonomic and form factor standpoint.

I have SpeakerCraft IR emitters and when the emitter comes unstuck, I cut a piece of DOUBLE SIDED Tape to fit the emitter and stick it back on. I use Scotch Cat. number 665. This can be purchased at Wal-Mart, Staples or any where tape is sold.
legierk 05-26-09, 07:23 PM After about 2 years of daily use, the volume buttons on my 880 have become almost impossible to push and activate. I emailed support, and after a few back and forths, it was determined my remote was out of warranty and could not be repaired. I was offered a 50% discount on any Logitech remote of my choosing.
50% is very tempting. My question is....what would you do? I'm really looking at the Harmony One as a viable replacement. $125 for a new Harmony One seems like a good deal. I have read the 890 sufferes the same volume and channel woes as the 880. Deos the One have similiar issues? The buttons look different to me, leading me to believe the manufacturing process is different.
Or, do I just live with the 880 until it completely zonks out?
PS. They (Logitech) remapped a few of my LCD buttons for the volume control "to see if the command was being sent properly". This is not a great alternative for my wife, who is not into learning new things! LOL.

Before you go down the road of getting a new One, you may want to try this (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=15881584#post15881584). I am in the same boat (volume up key is getting worse every day), so I may give this a try.
edit: by the way, I cannot comment on the life expectancy of the keys on the One, as it hasn't been out that long and I don't have one, but the One can be had for around $180 or less, so the $125 is an okay price, but not great.

About 6 months out of warranty with the same issue and the same 50% off offer from Logitech. If anyone else gives the glue solution a try please post your results. I think it's terrible that Logitech assumes that 50% off a new remote is a reasonable solution to this issue.

I'm very sorry to hear you and others are having issues with your remotes, but since it is out of warranty, I would say that 50%-off is a fairly generous offer from Logitech. It is definitely better than 0%-off, which most manufacturers would give on their products after the warranty period has expired.
I have seen some refurb 880's online for $70-90, which might be a good deal if they come with the full 1-year warranty.

Most manufacturers offer repairs; they do not. A $200 product should offer some sport of repair option. Sure, it may not justify the cost, but in some cases it does, especially if the repair comes with a warranty.

I'm not sure how true that is these days.
I had a problem with a $200 coffee maker. Manufacturer wouldn't fix it, they just offered me a discount towards a new one and it wasn't 50% off.

I agree. My father bought a humidifier that cost him a few hundred dollars. He's on his third one now as the manufacturer just keeps sending him a new one when his breaks. Once he's out of warranty, he'll be SOL.
These days the products are made so cheaply that it's generally not worth fixing them. Sometimes you can find independent shops that will do repairs on some items (like a coffee maker), but usually the repair cost is close to or higher than buying a new item.

Just got my One today to replace the broken 880. It is far better IMO so far. Larger buttons and better ergonomics. Charger fits better. Touchscreen is nice - esp if need to go from activity to device and back. Seems more user friendly though software and programming is the same. I think it's a definite step up.

Im a bit confused abouy the ONE model. The 890 has a higher list price on Amazon so I would assume that would be the better model and the next step up from the 880 but the way everyone talks about the ONE, Im not sure. Which is the better model 890 or One?

Touch screen aside, the main button layout of the One is SOOOOO much more intuitive and easy to operate by feel. I used an 880 for years and the One was still immediately easier to use. I loved my 880, but I would not go back to it now that I have used the One.
Shsinclair 06-01-09, 06:30 PM I have SpeakerCraft IR emitters and when the emitter comes unstuck, I cut a piece of DOUBLE SIDED Tape to fit the emitter and stick it back on. I use Scotch Cat. number 665. This can be purchased at Wal-Mart, Staples or any where tape is sold.
Thanks. Picked some double sided tape this weekend and works like a charm.

I would get a One except it has the touchscreen. I hate that. I wish there was a version of the One that didn't have the touchscreen. I'd buy one if there was.
jjigglers 06-02-09, 03:08 AM i tried searching through this mammoth of a thread, but can anyone point me to a quick fix for the battery contact issue? pretty sure it's the remote and not the charger. on my second remote, and not under warranty anymore.
i would prefer something other than the soldering method, but if that's the only other option i can figure that one out.

I agree that having physical buttons coupled with the One's superior graphics would be the best of both worlds but, on balance, the One is still easier to use by feel because the main button layout is so much better.
On my 880, I ended up duplicating the transport keys of my DVR in the custom keys because it was so hard to work the 880's hard transport keys just by feel. I don't need to do that with the One because it's hard keys are quite easy to work by feel alone.

I am looking into either this remote or the "One" for myself and noticed this post on an Amazon review posting of the product. It seems to be what you are looking for:
Posted by By J. A. Dombrowski (Valencia, Ca) in Jan 2006:
" After several replacements I have finally learned that the design of the battery compartment is the problem. The battery fits loosely enough in the compartment that it can move slightly away from it's contacts. When this occurs it is the same as quickly removing and replacing the battery, the remote shuts down and then restarts.
Solution: Until Logitech redesigns the battery compartment, here is a simple fix. Take a piece of paper (card stock works well) cut the same size as the battery. Fold one end several times like an acordian and then place that between the lower compartment wall and the battery end. This should act like a shim and prevent the battery from moving away from the contacts. "
Hope it works for you

IME the chargers have been the problem but can't say with 100% certainty.
What is the soldering method? I don't recall reading about this even though I've been subbed to this thread for an eternity.

There are two separate problems...
Some units do not make good contact with the charger cradle... you do not hear a beep or get a charging indicator on the display, but the remote functions (at least until the battery dies). I was able to deal with this by always keeping the contacts on the remote and cradle clean (periodic wipe with a pencil eraser), but later models came with a redesigned cradle.
The second problem is with the battery losing contact with the metal strips in the battery compartments. This can be fixed by building up the thickness of the strips with some solder... or it can also be fixed by folding up some tim card stock and wedging it between the battery and the case to keep the battery pressed against the contacts. The folded paper worked fine on mine.

I think my problem is the former, but I have the new cradle (the one with the magnets, right?) and it won't charge at all.
The other day my 880 battery low alarm went off, no biggie. I put it on the charger that night. It then only seemed to last for a day or two, usually lasts me at least a week or more between charges. So I put it on the charger again. I heard the beep when cradled and saw it was making contact.
It just doesn't charge, battery indicator red and empty even after a few days. Each time I put it on it does some sort of boot/test and then looks like it is charging but never does. I went to remove the battery cover and it was very difficult to get off. Finally got it off and the battery wont come out. The battery looks as though it has expanded, blown up. It has been a few years, but it seems as though it should slide back and pop right out.
Can anyone confirm that my battery might be toast?
Any other tests I can do to confirm it is the battery?
All my buttons and everything still work fine, so should I mess with a new battery or go for the new "One"?
Thanks
