guardkey 11-08-09, 07:48 PM Anyone having an issue with this? I have a 3yr old 880 and just added a Vizio VSB210WS soundbar to my setup.
I've set the activity to "use the soundbar" when watching TV, however the command doesn't seem to stick. I've resetup this multiple times, but it just doesn't seem to work. It continually commands the TV volume, and not the soundbar.
In contrast, I've also set the activity of Watch DVD to use the soundbar, and there is no issue.
Any thoughts?
guardkey 11-08-09, 08:29 PM ....stupid "customize buttons" button....
OY!
shinksma 11-09-09, 08:41 AM As I expected, as soon as I bought a new Harmony, Amazon has one on special for a nice price - check your Gold Box deal of the day. refurb 890.
I'll stick with my "new" 880 - don't have a need for the RF, but if I hadn't already bought an 880, I would have jumped on this.

That is a great deal. Thanks for the heads up.

Many, including me, had a problem with the remote not making proper contact with the charging cradle. Logitech replaced both for me, but it's been quite some time since they did that for me and others. Can you tell if it is a contact issue, or is the battery just not taking a charge?

normally it should go more than two years, but it's not that uncommon to have the battery die before then. I believe they can be found for around $20 - $30 at various internet sites.

i fixed it. I opened up the harmony program and did a search for my problem. it said to connect the remote to my PC and click on remote update and it worked
How are the buttons on the 880 compared to the 550? I have a 550 (actually the Xbox 360 harmony) and I am not very happy with how it controls my Comcast DVR. I've changed the timing and still get inconsistent response from the DVR. The DVR responds very well to the remote that came with it. I don't know if it's the remote, DVR, or... but I think it's because of the rubber buttons on the 550. Has anyone else had this problem and/or do current owners of the 880 think the hard buttons will resolve my issue?

I had the same issue with an 890. I called Logitech, and they had me use a pencil eraser and clean the contacts on the remote. - It worked great after that. Give it a try, hope it works for you.
berger6696 11-17-09, 04:24 PM My 890 is not turning off my Optoma HD 20. It turns it on, changes inputs, ect fine, but will not turn it off consistently (yes, it will sometimes). Controls everything else fine. I tried learning the off command from the optoma remote, and it doesn't help.
I'm going to try deleting the projector, then adding it. If this doesn't work, are there any other suggestions?

Under Devices, try changing the "Inter-Device" delay setting to a larger number for the Optoma.

The 880 is fatally flawed. Logitech has tried to fix the device retroactively. First they replaced them, then they redesigned the cradle. The ones with two brass contacts and a magnet in the middle is the version 2. Now for the most part they will offer you a 50% off coupon on any remote replacement. Take that offer and get the One. It works no systematic failures.

That's what I did. The "One" has a fool-proof charging system and a better button layout. Go for it if they offer you a 50% off coupon deal.
P.S. I am still using an 880 on my main system, still working great after about 3 years.
browerjs 11-22-09, 05:44 PM I'm sticking the IR emitters on my Onkyo 606 where I think the infrared sensor is, but it doesn't seem to be controlling the unit reliably. Is there anything else I need to do in setting up my 890?
Number28 11-25-09, 01:00 AM Is anyone else having this issue with adding/updating sequences on the Harmony 880?
I have had sequences running on my remote for quite a while, and recently I noticed with my latest update, all my sequences were removed from my Watch TV activity.
I tried deleting and and recreating my sequences, but after syncing the remote, the sequence is just missing. It shows up in the button mapping of the customizing software, but doesn't transfer to the remote.
Did Logitech remove sequence functionality for the 880?
I've re-installed the firmware of the remote, and reinstalled the PC software, but no luck.
Any thoughts?

wait. It won't for long. Been there done that.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but my 880 is about 4 years old (original design) and has never failed to work perfectly. It is the original version with original cradle... the only "workarounds" I've ever needed for it were to wedge some cardboard in the battery compartment to keep the battery tight against the contacts, and to clean the charger and and remote contacts with an eraser once a month or so. I gave it very heavy use for three years before I upgraded to a One, and now my son has been using it with his equally complex setup for the past year. That's not to say that I don't think the One is a significantly better design (particularly in the "operate by feel" department, for the hard buttons at least), but the 'ol 880 has never failed us in any way.

I've had two 880's, each about 4 years old. One of them has been replaced by a One, after developing charging problems, the other 880 is still going strong...will keep it in the system until reasonable troubleshooting can't fix it.
badbeat33 11-28-09, 09:38 AM I'm trying to set up my father's new 720 and I've got it figured out for everything except his DirecTV HD-DVR receiver. It says on the side that it's a HR22-100 and that's what I've setup on his remote's settings but the receiver will not respond to any commands. I searched for this receiver on here but came back with 0 posts.
Does anyone have this receiver and can get the Harmony 720 to communicate with it?
Thanks

I'm not a DirecTV guy, but I think you may have to configure the receiver for IR versus RF remote operation (you want IR selected to work with the Harmony), and there also may be multiple IR codes sets to allow multiple recievers to be used side-by-side... code set selection would have to match between receiver and Harmony as well.
badbeat33 11-28-09, 11:28 AM Thanks jcalabria. The receiver was set to "RF" signals and not "IR." I changed the settings to receive "IR" commands but still nothing. I'm assuming it has something to do with the IR codes you mentioned. I've run out of my window to call logitech for free so I guess I'll have to hope DirecTV can help me.
Thanks for your help.

FYI... Harmony email support is typically very good and it does not run out.
If you have the OE remote handy, and you can confirm that the OE remote operates the receiver properly, I would suggest using the...
Device > Settings > Confirm IR Commands
...function in the Harmony software to allow the software to select the best match database for the receiver's IR codes. It will step you through reading a few key IR commands from the OE remote until it can find the matching device database.
Before you do that, you might want to clear any customizations that may have been programmed into the OE remote by resetting the OE remote... I downloaded the manual for that receiver and and the procedure to do that would be:
Point the remote away from your DIRECTV® Receiver and components. Press and hold MUTE and SELECT until the light above the slide switch on the remote flashes twice (about 5 seconds).
Enter 9-8-1. The light on the remote will flash twice, indicating you have cleared AV1, AV2 and TV modes.
Good Luck.

While you're finding the 720 group, tell the remote you have the HR-20. You'll be fine.
jastork 11-28-09, 07:32 PM I am an experienced Harmony 880 programmer. I've setup my own advanced setup, got a remote for the parents and my inlaws. I think I have met my match and I dont know what to do....
Inlaws just purchased a new Philips LCD (52PFL7403D/F7). THe remote codes are in the database for this TV. Problem is, I cant setup the TV activity because the Harmony thinks this TV has NO TUNER! I get an error that I have to add a device to change channels. HELLO... I can do that now with the TV.
I have figured out that the remote codes do not quite match the database so I tought it the new IR commands. But it still comes back to the fact that I can not setup the activity because it does not recognize this model as having a built-in tuner.
How do I get around this?

Pick another Philips TV that's close. The database is obviously damaged on that one. You may want to report the error to Logi Support.
avalnche 12-12-09, 03:53 PM I have a denon avr1910 and harmony 880, and when trying to make selections on the harmony, like "direction up", the denon interprets it as two button presses and moves cursor twice. Have this problem with the volume up/down buttons also, changes volume level by one whole increment instead of one half increment. OEM remote works properly, and the direction buttons have been learned by the harmony, not from the database. The volume issue is not a big problem but the direction buttons drive me crazy, can't make some selections because the cursor passes right over them, thinking that it was two button presses.
Tried to search for the answer before posting but could'nt explain it in a way that the search feature could find it.
Thanks for any help.

You need to adjust the "repeats" setting, which you can access in the
Device
Troubleshoot
"Device" responds to some commands either too many times or only occasionally
[EDIT: I see you figured it out while I was responding... Great!]
If the battery is removed, does the activities get erased?

No
No
Thanks for the respond mx6bfast. So basically the remote is not going to loss its memory on all the activity that has been downloaded to it, correct?

Correct. I've switched out batteries on mine from one that is cracked and vice versa and have never lost anything.
And even if it did you could just log into your account (on your pc) and connect the remote and re-sync.

JAgustin 12-19-09, 01:44 AM I just picked up the 880 (my first Harmony remote) and it works great. I got it at Costco up here in Canada for about $140CAD.
Equipment:
Panasonic Plasma TCP50S1
PS3 Slim (I had to buy PS3 BT - RF/IR adapter for $50)
Motorola Cable HD box
Yamaha HTR-6240
I only have 2 activities setup, since I don't have really any further requirements -- Watch TV and Play Games. Works great!

It is a bad device in the database. Report it using email tech support - the guys on the phone cannot do much for you. I reported one recently and it took them about a week to repond but they fixed the device.
Anyone got their 880 to work with a WD TV Live?
I just got it connected to my HT equipment minutes ago and programmed the 880. Seems most of the buttons I have tried are working but I do have some questions. Just wanted to see if anyone here is familiar with the device first????
Hello...need some help with devise setup. Just bought a new pj/Epson 8100. When setting up device the 880 would not give me choice of pj model 8100 but did give me previous model 6100. Further in to setup I am not given a Component video input source choice. It gives me the usual hdmi, composite, computer, etc but no component. What gives. This is important so when I choose Watch Movie activity the remote will tell my prepro which input to switch to...see what I mean? Is there another name for Component or something I am missing? Thanks.

I'm trying to decide between the 880 and One but backlighting is a big deal to me so I'm hoping for some feedback. Searching hasn't given me a clear answer.

Without any reservation, IMHO, the backlighting on the 880 sucks and on the One it's excellent. Not even close.
This is addition to the high failure rate of the 880. I could not in good conscience recommend an 880. No probs with the One. Have both (and others over time) the two 880's sleep with the fishes now. Actually they wait the best opportunity for a 50% coupon use from Logitech.

While my feelings are not as strong as joe221, I agree that the backlighting on the One is far superior to the 880.
RolandOG 12-30-09, 06:26 PM Well, that settles that. Plus, that comment on the high failure rate of the 880 seals the deal. I've already had a 670 die prematurely and I don't feel like dealing with that again.
Thanks for the replies.

New to the forums and need help. Got an 880 for Christmas and I can't run the update. It freezes at 3% and just sits there for hours. I've read similar posts on the internet and nothing helps. So far, Logitech support sucks. Ive been waiting 3 days for a "level 2" call back. Nothing. All firewalls, anti-virus etc. programs are disabled. My routers firewall is disabled also. I'm totally frustrated at this point. I'm almost thinking the unit is bad. If anyone has any experience with this problem, I would totally appreciate a post back. Thanks guys.

I know it is frustrating, and perhaps you do have had unit, or bad cable. But Logitech Harmony support is very good. You did contact them at a time when they are swamped from Christmas gifts and going into a holiday weekend. Patience.

You might try re-downloading your firmware & software in "Safe Mode". Here are the instructions (Use these for both Firmware & Software downloads):
1) Power on your Computer
2) Take out the batteries of the Harmony Remote
3) Hold down the OFF button on your Harmony and connected to the USB cable on the computer
4) The Harmony will power up and it will say on the LCD “Safe mode requested”
5) Login to your Harmony Home Page (http://users.harmonyremote.com)
6) Click on “Support”
7) On the Download section click on Firmware
8) Follow the steps on the page to update your firmware, our system will say that you have the latest firmware but you can still update it again. The difference is that we are u[dating the firmware in save mode
9) After downloading the firmware again to the Harmony Remote you will have to do an Update to your Harmony Remote to download your configuration
10) When you get back on the Home Page click on “Update My Remote”
Hope this works for you.....

I don't think anything is wrong with your remote. I believe Logitech is having problems with their site. Most probably their servers may be over loaded due to many people receiving remotes for Christmas and trying to access this site to update them. I tried and I also got stuck at the 3% area of the progress bar. Maybe later this evening when most people are asleep their servers may be not so loaded down. Anyway I believe it is Logitech's site and not your remote.

@bernie33: Yeah your probably right. Just frustrated.
@Joe Warner: I tried putting the remote in safe mode with no success. Whats the point of putting the remote in safe mode? I've tried late at night with the same thinking. Theres probably 200,000 people trying to do the same thing I'm doing right now. If I try tonight should I put it in safe mode again?

This sucks. On the software mine freezes at 3%, on the internet it freezes at 10%.
Lsollee 01-02-10, 02:04 AM Hi guys,
New to the forums and need help. This was posted on Remote central
On Friday, January 1, 2010 we experienced an issue which caused some Harmony remote updates to stop at 3%. The issue was resolved at 7:30 PM (GMT-5) on Friday, January 1 and you should now be able to update your Harmony remote.
To update your Harmony remote:
1. Launch the Harmony remote software and log into your account
2. Click on the Update Remote button.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Harmony Technical Support

I did it from the software (ICON down by windows the clock) and it took ~1 minute. I also successfully tried it from the WEB site but the WEB site was slower as it took twice as long to complete. I also have a 880.
I have a Panasonic Plasma and the volume button raises and lowers the volume by two, not one. Anyone know if I can change this somewhere??
I love everything about this remote, except this.
Thanks for the help.
ntdouglas 01-03-10, 02:33 PM I'm up and running guys. After doing some serious surfing about the Harmony remote last night(7th straight night)I started getting into threads about known issues/bugs with my Linksys router. At about midnight last night I completely bypassed the router and wala, updated the remote in about a minute.
This thing is freaking awesome.:D Gonna start tweaking this badboy.
Thanks to all you guys for the time spent helping me out.
wcmartin 01-03-10, 08:58 PM Can someone advise me on how to setup channels on the remote screen. I like to listen to cable box music. There are some channels I enjoy and want to program remote so I can select them from one of the eight onscreen remote selections. I am trying to aviod setting them up as a favorites button. Like an actual selection with channel number assigned.
I am not exactly sure I follow what you are trying to do but if you are trying to add a "soft button" which changes the channel you can use a sequence.
Go into customize buttons on your activity and click add sequence. Then pick the channel on digit at a time.

I did that but it did not work. I really don't understand that process. I entered 510 for sequence, then digital set top box for device, and select for command. Then I added that to addtional buttons with sequence for device and 510 for command. Did not work. Maybe someone out here can provide me with a line by line example that worked for then. Then I can relate it to what I want to do.

For you it would not be the TV device, it would be your cable box.

Do you know how to make Settings function from TV work on remote? I can add the Settings function to the remote. When I'm there and it's open I cannot get it to function within the open operation.

I just got a new turntable for Christmas to replace one that a friend's child had destroyed 10 years ago. A very nice addition and I was pleased to finally be able to listen to all my old albums again. I got ready to add the activity to my remote only to find there is no play a record, or play a phonograph activity!
Of course I managed to get it to work, although the icon certainly doesn't match the activity, but I was just a little surprised to see that my remote that I had always considered to be the most complete offering out there to have this omission!
Come on Logitech... how difficult would it be to add an icon and activity for what is admittedly a fading legacy application. All it has to do is turn on my AVR and set it to "phono"...
I know there are other audiophiles out there that still listen to vinyl records...
:D

Me too. I just made up a device that has no remote and set it to the Phono input on the AVR. Weak!

Does anyone know how to skip ahead in a DVR recorded show by more than 30 seconds? My toddler hit some combination of buttons on my 880 that moved the show from about 10 minutes in to around the 50 minute mark. I've been trying various key combinations with no success.
He is unfortunately too small (14 months) to explain to dad how its done :-)

On my DirecTV HD-DVR I hold the FF button down about 3 sec release it & press it again for a 15 min skip.
HELP, today my screen turned different colors and a message popped up saying "Harmony testing". Actually seemed to be a reboot, but the remote will not communicate with any of my equipment, even after I erased all the info and started from scratch.
oman321 01-08-10, 09:51 AM Im sure you have tried to remove the battery and such. The other thing I had read about I can't exactly recall if this is right is to reset the 880 you have to press and hold the Power off, OK, and 0 at the time. I might be wrong but hopefully that's it.

equilibrer 01-10-10, 03:07 AM I have googled for one hour and have not find a solution.
Is there any way to change the order of default (not self-made) startup actions when starting a activity?
My example:
I have a Samsung DVR, Denon AV Receiver and Samsung TV. When I start the "Watch TV" activity, following happens:
1. Startup TV
2. Startup AVR
3. Startup DVR
4. (All other devices are off)
5. DVR - Set to "Tuner"
6. TV - Set to input "HDMI1"
7. AVR - Set to input "SAT/CBL"
What annoys me, is that if the AVR is in "SAT/CBL" input in previous time I used my system and powered the system off (pretty often), when again starting the same activity, there occurs an extra round of setting the "input to SAT/CBL" in AVR, which causes the picture go blank and sound signal stop for a while and then it returns to normal.
I can change the order of the powering on the devices, but I cannot find any way to move the "AVR - Set to input "SAT/CBL"" to earlier.
Is there any possibility to change the startup sequence for example to following? :
1. Startup AVR (delays here if needed)
2. AVR - Set to input "SAT/CBL"
3. Then the rest..
Sorry if this has been mentioned, I searched the thread and couldnt find it through the several pages I scanned...
Is there a way to configure the order in which the devices are powered off?...similar to how you can configure the order they are powered on.
majikmann 01-13-10, 06:59 PM Hi, I'm using the Harmony 880 to control the PS3 via the nyko, but I can't seem to remap the x buton to the ok button on the harmony... I have read on the forum that it is possible but when I try it nothing changes, the ok button is still the select button?? Can anyone help me out? Thanks!
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but did Logitech shut down the web interface to the configuration database?
I normally use the configuration app locally, but was trying to help a friend that didn't have it and couldn't get to the web interface. Just couldn't find anything on the logitech site.
Tried to get back to it from my system where I had an entry stored in RoboForm that used to work, but it comes up with "Website could not display the page" error.
If anyone knows if the web interface is still available, could you please respond with where it is?
Thanks
Never mind, apparently the server was malfunctioning. The web site now responds. Thanks anyway.

Good question.
Also, recently when I put my 890 on the charger cradle, it reset itself.
After the charge, I had to set the date, but there was no 2010.
Has this been added to the Harmony software so that I can have that option when I "reload" the remote.

Not that I know of, but you can change the background or theme under Remote Settings. I use the "Harmony No Icons" theme as I find it easier to read.
grod777 01-20-10, 08:49 PM I was just looking to see how to change the channel icons. Can someone explain how to do this or provide a link to the thread.
Thanks.
Disregard-I found it on page 187 of this forum.
steppinrazer 01-23-10, 11:19 AM Has anyone else experienced problems w/ newer sony LCD's HMDI input switching.
All of my activities switch my components correctly, but the TV..The input screen pops up on the screen but the hdmi input usually doesn't switch.
The only activity I have that doesn't utilize an hdmi input functions perfectly fine..
I have an old DVD player that I had my Harmony 670 programmed for. I am trying to get the dvd player to work with my 880 now.
Everything works except for the fast forward and rewind. Looking through the menus I do not even see an option for ff/rew, only chapter prev and chapter next. i dug up the original remote and it doesn't even have the ff/rew on it????????
The old 670 can ff/rew just fine. Can I somehow teach the ff/rew code from the 670 to the 880 and have it on the hard buttons that are supposed to be for those functions?
I know I can make an option on the LCD but that's not what I want to do.
any ideas?
nevermind, I think I got it to learn the command.
kendo70433 01-25-10, 11:02 PM FYI... Harmony email support is typically very good and it does not run out.
Hi folks. I'm sorry to post this here, but Logitech won't let me use their forums. I don't know where else to turn.
I'm here to report that Harmony email support definitely runs out. Here is how. I bought my remote a couple of years ago, registered, got it set up. Time passed enough that Logitech blackballed my email address. When I try to log in to their site, I get "invalid email address" When I try to re-register, I get a note that that same email is in the database. I'm stuck: can't email customer support, can't ask on their forums because I'd have to log in first.
Has Logitech really gotten this cavalier toward their customers? I was thinking of upgrading, but if this is how they treat customers, I will shop for a different universal remote manufacturer.

Are you, perhaps, using the wrong password?
kendo70433 01-26-10, 12:02 AM I used the same username and password the Harmony Remote Software uses to access my remote's profile. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software to force it to give me the login screen, where my old username and password worked. At least I can make minor changes to the remote's programming. But I want to add a new device that isn't in the database, a SeymourAV retractable screen. For that I imagine I'll have to work with a Logitech-tech. But I can't get onto their site. And I can't email them. Hmm, maybe I could send an actual email, if I knew the right address. I have been using their site's web form for "email support", which rejects my email address as invalid.
HiHoStevo 01-26-10, 12:12 AM I have had a similar problem in the past....
You have to make sure you are "sending" the email from the address they have on file for you.... ie: if there server has on file xxxxx@hotmail.com and you try sending them an email from xxxxxx@gmail.com it will be rejected by the server... the mail has to come from the address they have in their database for you.
Hope this is your problem also.

I just tried and I get the same result that you did. It won't let me login saying the login id and password don't match. Asking it to send my password tells me that it isn't a valid address and it won't let me register from scratch with that address.
If I really wanted to login I would try registering with one of my other e-mail addresses. Your ISP probably lets you give yourself additional addresses. Or you could get a yahoo or gmail address and try again.
But to setup your screen you may be able to do it yourself. You'll just have to pick a device (I don't recall if there is an "other" device type). Then learn the commands and assign them to buttons. From what other people have reported, after a certain length of time there is a fee for phone support so you probably want to try on your own anyway.
When I try to log in to their site, I get "invalid email address" When I try to re-register, I get a note that that same email is in the database.
I've had the same problem for a few years with their forums. I have emailed them probably 5 or 6 times. Never even received a response. And I also am certain I used the same exact user/pass. Very irritating.
kendo70433 01-26-10, 12:08 PM A few years ago when Logitech changed from excellent customer support to this limited-time support, they must have done something that royally messed up their customer database, locking out their older customers. I have read of the same lock-out problem on their own forums. (Now how did those people log in to report the problem )
kendo70433 01-26-10, 05:37 PM Does anyone have a Logitech customer service email contact they would be willing to share with me? Their site only allows "email contact" through a web page that rejects my email address. I just want to be able to get in contact with them.
Many thanks if you can do this.
Try using this e-mail address: logitech_us@mailca.custhelp.com.
kendo70433 01-27-10, 12:04 PM Thank you Bruce. I'll send them a post and try to get my email address out of purgatory.
Hopefully, that e-mail address will still work.
The last time I used it was in May of 2009.
kendo70433 01-27-10, 08:51 PM Looks like it's still good. I sent a problem report and got an automated response that they'll contact me in 1 business day. Fingers crossed!
And thanks again for posting the e-dress.
JBaumgart 01-28-10, 01:05 AM Comcast is rolling out their new "World of More" in our area and I am wondering if Harmony remotes can supplant the little black remotes that come with the digital boxes that are being shipped out. I have three TV's where I do not have Motorola DVR's connected, and for one of them I use a Harmony. I would like to maintain the control of all devices in this system, without having to use the remote that's being shipped with the digital adapter that Comcast is shipping out...

Calling at a database is a misnomer!
With all the re-badged equipment available these days, many units have more than one brand and maybe several model numbers.
But you can not do searches!
For a type of equipment (say a TV)
Can you ask the database what brands are available?
Can you ask the database what models of a given brand are available?
Can you enter a model number (or part of a model number) and have it search all brands?
kendo70433 01-28-10, 08:31 PM Well, they call it a database :)
By the way, I was able to get in touch with Logitech's customer service using my work email. I now can use my original email address at home. And they are working on adding my screen to their device "database".
Thanks again BruceS for that Logitech e-dress below. It did the trick.

kendo70433 01-28-10, 11:04 PM Their post sounded like the fix only applied to me. But I'm still in contact about another issue, so I'll suggest they look into a systemic problem.
Having an issue with my LCD from time to time and was hoping I could do something with my 880 to help.
Devices involved
Samsung LCD
Samsung Blu Ray player
WD TV Live
Denon Receiver
The BD player and WD are both connected hdmi into the Denon and one cable out to the LCD. Sometimes when I power on my devices, there is a momentary delay while the device turns on (BD and WD) therefore the tv just shows "No Signal". If I power the device off and right back on, it sees it no problems. Now, if everything is off I would think I could make the WD/BD turn on first and then add a slight delay for the LCD to come on. That might work OK. But what if I am just changing activities and the LCD is already on. I'm just not sure waht to do as far as that goes.
Any ideas?
realred2 01-31-10, 03:08 AM I Have a 880 and am looking at a 1100, but I have some older Sony equipment that has Control A1 II and Control S ports on the back side, Does anyone know if the Harmonies have Control capabilities through these ports (from the RF extender or IR distribution system) with a 3.5mm male mono plug? I would like to save some of my IR Emitters for other items. (as it makes a cleaner install) (also, has anyone added a female 3.5mm mono jack to there equipment and wired it into the IR receiver on the front of the unit (inside the chassis) so you can use a cable connection instead of the stick on's?)
Thanks for any assistance.

Not only did it only apply to me, but my own home email account got re-broken in their system last Friday. I managed to get it re-fixed. But it looks like their customer database has some real issues.
On the other hand, the fix appears to be easy. So find another email account, open a case, and get your e-dress fixed.

They reestablished my id and set a new password. I'll try periodically over the next couple of weeks to see if I encounter the same problem that you did with it failing again.

And thank you for that. It would be nice if Logitech noticed how many "Please fix my account" requests they got and fixed the whole problem. But at least we have a usable path.
dmxsoulja3 02-04-10, 07:09 PM Ok guys have a question just got the 880 and I have all my devices setup and some activities and I have one small issue, Watch TV, my dvr comes on, avr comes on, tv comes on, and then it sets the inputs, is there anyway to make it ignore the input if its already on that input? If im already on HDMI 1 it attempts to put it on HDMI 1 again so the input menu opens up and closes down and the screen flashes on my tv, kind of annoying. Also I set favorite channels and icons but I can't seem to get to them when I'm actually using the remote is there a trick?

1) I'd leave it set and repeat the HDMI1. This is how the remote knows the status. If you decided to watch a Blu-ray and need to go to HDMI2 then it later will properly switch back to HDMI1 when you watch TV. Make sense?
2) As for your favorite channels if you set them up and saved them when using the Logitech software they should be there. Be sure to press the "Media" button on the remote to see these and they will display on the remote's LCD screen. The Media function will not work until after you hit the Watch TV function as this is tied to watching TV.
LansdaleHokie 02-06-10, 12:40 PM hey folks - quick question that i'm sure has been answered here:
how can i get a command added to the list of actions that occur when I start an activity? my activity is 'Play PS3'. The activity powers on my PS3 (via the logitech adapter), my TV, and my Receiver.
I use my receiver (onkyo 806) as a pre/pro and have an Emotiva external power amp. The two devices are connected via the 12v triggers. I know that in order to turn on the amp via the trigger I have to turn on the zone 2 power on the 806. I have added the code to turn on Zone 2 to my Logitech account, but now I'm trying to figure out how (or if) I can seamlessly turn on the amp when the 806 is turned on. Anyone know if this is possible, or will I have to press an additional button on the 880 to turn on the zone 2 on the 806 after the activity completes?

You can add custom startup/shutdown commands to an activity via:
Activity
Settings
Review the Settings
Yes, but I want to add...
Press Save/Next 'til you get to...
Custom Actions
Add the required additional startup commands (and/or shutdown commands)
Save
You'll probably need add a Zone 2 Off command to the shutdown sequence as well.
However, another (better) way to handle this would be to add a second copy of the 806 as a separate device (rename it as your Emotiva amp if you'd like) and assign the Zone 2 power commands as if they were the devices normal power commands. Then, add the second copy as an additional device. The advantage to this method is that the Harmony will track the power state of the Zone 2/Power Amp as a separate device, better for switching between activities.
BTW, not 100% sure, but I think the Harmony database may already have an 806/Zone2 device already in it. I seem to remember seeing it when I was helping my son configure his system.
Is there a hard delay on this remote regarding how long before it sends a command from a new power on? I cannot get this remote to turn on after being off for several hours and properly change to the right input. I've set a delay of 15 seconds (15000 msec). I've watch the "send" icon on the remote and it stops well before 15 seconds. Anyone else with a Mitsubishi DLP able to get it to work properly? I really hate having to constantly use the HELP button.
I'm gonna search the thread but if anyone can give me a detailed description of how to learn a sequence longer than 5 commands I would appreciate it. I know I read somewhere there is a way to trick the remote somehow but I can't figure it out.
FourForty 02-07-10, 04:12 PM Hello, new 880 User here.
I have recently been trying to set-up the 880 for my fathers old TV.
He has a Zenith C27A24T tube tv and uses cable TV (no box. just coax)
anyway, i got everything set up, even a few custom buttons for switching imputs.
The volume is a problem. when i hit the volume up button it goes up one spot and then half a second later it jumps about ten or so. same with volume down. I can hold the button to increase or decrease fast and stays at wherever it was when i let go of the button. but to do small changes it doesn't work right. just moves one, then jumps a bunch.
I thought it was the IR, and it still might be. but no other buttons do this. the Channel changes fine. everything else seems to work.
Oh, and is there a way to be able to turn the TV on without using the "Watch TV" button that starts the activity? can't i just use the power button to turn the TV on like i do to turn it off?
thanks.
-880 newb.
vic_ferrari 02-10-10, 08:41 PM Everything has worked fine for years with my 880, until I upgraded my Denon AVR to one with HDMI switching, and ran all video through the amp now. The issue is with the Harmony power down sequence, and the inability to turn off my projector as part of that sequence. I must always use 'help' to shut the projector down. The problem is verified as being related to the Harmony turning off the AVR (that is doing HDMI switching) either just before or in the middle of the power off sequence (of two power toggle commands to the projector). Apparently, the projector is "busy" recieving HDMI signals from the powering down AVR, and will not accept the power toggles from the Harmony.
I was told that the only way to solve this problem is to have Logitech Harmony 2nd level tech support insert a power off delay on a device-by-device basis. This is something that cannot be accomplished through the end-user software. Im running ver 7.7 and have the latest firmware installed. The remote is beyond the 90-day free support period, and Im not thrilled with having to pay $29 to have a rep fix an inherent problem with the software. Does anyone have a work-around or solution to this problem?
thanks

 Is that for phone support or email support? I was under the impression email support was free forever.
vic_ferrari 02-11-10, 10:30 AM Phone support. I sent an email as well, but have no response.
omegat3 02-11-10, 10:34 PM Phone support. I sent an email as well, but have no response.
Send another email through their support site (I also suggest loging into your account before doing so)... I have always had great success with their email support and resolutions within days if not hours, including customization to my 880's profile (slow button response from the Nyko Blu-Wave to PS3). My only wish is that they could fix the volume button which gets tougher to press and register every day!
I just got my Harmony 880 today, trying to get it setup with all my stuff. I got it working for the most part, only major problem I am running into is shutting down my projector. I have an Optoma HD20. To power off the projector on the normal remote you press OFF then Enter to turn it off. The 880 only powers off, it doesn't press enter. Is there anyway to fix this?
Also, when controlling my xbox 360 with the remote, if I press left it won't go left. Any one have any ideas on how to fix this?
HiHoStevo 02-12-10, 08:25 AM FYI....... I spoke with Harmony Tech Support yesterday... and now they only offer email support just the same as phone support... only for the first 90 days.
It is a pity because there support people used to be really great and very helpful.
YMMV

You need to go the devices page and select settings for the optoma. Then select adjust power settings, turn off when not in use, then you need to select one button for on and a different button for off, select power toggle for on.
Then it will bring you to the power off screen, where you need to select the 3rd option "my device needs more than 1 command to turn it off" when you click next this will add 2 more boxes for you to add the needed command. So you put power toggle in the 1st box and then enter in the 2nd. This should make it so it sends both the commands which you need to power off correctly when you hit the off button.
Another option might be that you can sometimes set the projector to not require a power off confirmation which would save you the above process.
As far as the 360 make sure the left hard button has direction left mapped to it. Again go to that device, settings, customize buttons, and make sure direction left is selected for left.
If that left option button doesn't work for anything else than it's a hardware issue, but if it's only the xbox then its a bad setting.

Harmony technical support is in the toilet. They have completely destroyed one of the primary reasons to buy a Harmony remote. The email support really wasn't too bad at first but now they take as long as ten days to reply. They have removed the ability to update questions so you have to generate a new problem every time you need to communicate with them. Very unfortunate.
HiHoStevo 02-13-10, 03:54 AM I cannot find a Harmony 890 specific thread so I will pose the question here....
I just upgraded from my 880 to a 890 as now all the devices are hidden away... everything was working great initially... then I made just a few changes on the Light Controller (should not have a big effect) and all of a sudden I am getting some strange things going on.
1. Push Play Xbox 360.... all components power up and proper inputs are selected... but projector did not turn on. (Did power on normally when selecting Watch TV on different occasions) Push help button... "did that solve the problem" ... no... "is the projector on" .... no... "now is the projector on" ... yes... "did that solve the problem" ... yes. Play normally.... later decide to switch over to TV... so I press activity button and then "Watch TV" button.... all sources switch properly... however the projector turns off! (now I have to wait for the bulb to cool down to room temp before I re-light it) Weird........
2. Tonight I added a BD player and after updating the remote I had exactly the same thing happen when I attempted to switch from "Watch TV" to "Watch BluRay."
3. Just prior to this something else weird was going on... I was watching TV when I went into the Devices menu to make a change to the room lighting... after I was done I pushed the "Activity" button again to switch back to the DVR controls... however when it switched to the Activity Page (which is normal with the first push of the button) I could not get off that page... no matter how many times I pushed the Activity button the only screen that would come up was the first page of the Activities list... it was as though the entire system was powered down and nothing was in use... even though all I had done was left the DVR page for a moment to adjust the lighting.
Anyone ever seen anything like this?
I did take the battery out of the remote and then replaced it... was hoping a re-boot might fix the issue.
vic_ferrari 02-13-10, 09:33 AM Phone support. I sent an email as well, but have no response.
I just got an email response from support after 4 days...and they made the adjustment to the power down sequence, and asked that I update the remote again. All devices shut down correctly now. email seems to be the way to go if you are beyond the 90 day window, as long as you are willing to wait days for a response... I still think they should update the software to allow more control and configuration of the power-down steps...

Seems like you have some odd stuff going on, maybe something got messed up on the configuration for the proj. with the update. I would run thru the setup wizard for the projector again and hope that fixes things for you.
As far as number 3 when you enter devices instead of hitting activities to back out of it use the devices button, it will do the same thing you are describing except bring you back to devices and then when you hit devices again it will put you back in the activity you were in.

Thanks that fixed it for the most part! One problem though. When I hit power off it shuts everything off, except the projector because it changes sources. Is there anyway to make the projector shutoff first, or make it shutoff 5 seconds after everything else shut off?
And the left hard button is broken. I am returning it and getting a new one.
I did a search but couldnt find anything. I have Pioneer VSX-819H and when I listen to my ipod or music on my flash drive I usew either the Bass + or - symbols, or the left ao right preset arrow buttons to go forward a song. Does anyone have one of ther receivers or a similar receiver thas has figured out a way to go to the next or previous songs when the ipod or flash drive is plugged into the usb/ipod port on the receiver??
oman321 02-16-10, 09:02 AM I have considered uninstalling the projector and then re-installing it... although then every Activity would have to be re-done.
I made the mistake of un-installing a device and then the same one as a different type for my 1100 and like you said it made me re-do all the activities for that device.
I then discovered if you add the same device to your devices list and then run the wizard for the applicable activities you can add the new device to the activity. This process allowed me to remove functions from the same device and add them to new device and didn't mess up the actual activity. In the end the older device will be in the activity with no function and can be removed without messing things up.
Seems a little tricky and sometimes it might be worth just re-doing an activity unless you have tweaked the activity to your liking and dredge the thought of having to re-do them as I did with my 1100.

Yes you can make the projector shut off first, go into settings for each activity and one of the choices is order of which devices are powered on. I believe they will power off in the same, if not the reverse order.
S2G-Unit 02-18-10, 11:47 AM So how are you guys programming with hotkeys (ie. ALT+C).
How I do it using either MCE keyboard or MCE remote with my harmony?
I finally got everything on my remote setup like I want. But now I am having troubles. OK I have a Watch Blu-Ray Activity, it uses my PS3 and a nyko blu-wave. I setup the remote so it uses almost all the same keys as the blu-wave remote. Whenever I go to devices, then PS3 on the 880 it is setup like I want, but if I go to activites watch a blu-ray it changes back to default. I have tried deleting the activity and remaking it. It also does the same thing with my DVR.
Any suggestions?
oman321 02-19-10, 03:43 PM You probably set up the keys under devices, that only affects the device buttons when you go to devices. You need to customize the buttons thru the activity. Go to your activities page and the bottom option in each activity is "Customize Buttons" this is where you need to set the buttons you will see for activities.
Ah thank you! Did not know that.
I need help programming some of the advance features of a new Samsung plasma B650 series.
I have the basics nailed.:)
I want to change the Picture Settings Mode.
The instructions to do it from the Samsung remote are
press TOOLS
down arrow once to PICTURE MODE
either left or right arrow to cycle thru STANDARD ECO MOVIE or DYNAMIC
No further keying is required after you've selected 1 of the modes.
I did this to my samsung lcd using a sequence. google harmony sequence or go to logitechs support board and search. I'm not near my software at the moment so I don't know where exactly the option is.

I have a Samsung PN63B590 which is similar to yours.. Press Device and then press TV. Go to page 3 and there will be P.Mode. Press P.Mode and keep on pressing until you find the mode you want.
Since then I found two more ways. The other way is press Device and TV. Then press Menu. Go thru the Menu to change the P.Mode.
The last one is the best and easiest. Program your Watch TV activity page 1 buttons. There is a FAV button which I am not using. I program this to P.Mode, device=TV and key is P.Mode. In fact, I also added P.Size since I use these two keys a lot.
LeoDLion 02-26-10, 11:58 PM ...
1. Startup AVR (delays here if needed)
2. AVR - Set to input "SAT/CBL"
3. Then the rest..
There is an option to Review the order in which devices are powered on... then you can put your AVR on top of the list. I believe the AVR after powering will be seet to SAt/CBL before powering the next device.
LeoDLion 02-28-10, 08:54 AM I want to control a denon amps using the 880. I have the cabinet door open but like to close it. I went thru the threads looking for an ir extender. I can not use the Next Generation IR Extender because the 880 has a rechargeable battery.
So my question is what ir extender is available out there for the 880? Thanks.
oman321 02-28-10, 01:23 PM You could look at the X10 powermids on ebay. You can attach an emitter to the reciever if placement is not so easy inside the cabinet.

Thanks for the reply. I have been researching. So far the best bet is Hot Link Pro kind of pricey at $68 (Will it ever end?). The Powermids seem to be a good buy but after I read the reviews, I am not buying it. Mostly negative reviews e.g. does not work, etc.

Instead of buying an IR repeater when I moved all my components into a closet, I opted to get a wireless IR extender.
I can't post URLs, so go to monoprice dot com and search for product ID 5415 to see the device (at a better price than I've found elsewhere).
The only problem I had was when my neighbor bought the same product and we started controlling eachothers' cable boxes. VERY frustrating. Fortunately my new PVR also came with a wired IR receiver so I no longer have my box changing channels, recording shows I didn't plan, etc.
If you buy the one listed above, just read the reviews. I worte a comment that included somewhat lengthy instructions to modify the unit for better reception angles.

Hope you work a solution out. I have been using the mids for years and their performance have been nothing short of awesome. I even have used them outdoors to control my receiver in the basement for deck speakears in full sunlight without a hint of trouble. I just added them back into the system last night as my wired xantech IR receivers have decided to short circuit for no apparent reason that I know of.

Thanks Mikey. For the price, its better than Hot Link Pro. I will take a hard look.
3/6/2010. Just received the Monoprice IR Extender. It's working fine. Thanks Mikey. Just have to play around with it to find the best position. I have the receiver sitting on top of the AVR with the cabinet close. The transmitter is on the top shelf which is open. I do not even have to use the IR extender cable.

The piece that senses movement gets stuck and you have to occasionally free it up.

spamme0 03-10-10, 08:19 PM I need to build a power supply/cradle for a logitech harmony 880.
The specs for the AC supply say 8V 500ma.
But I'm afraid to apply that to the contacts on the 880.
I only get 4.7V at 200mA applied current.
Thought I'd ask before I tried to reverse-engineer/break the thing.
Is there anything electronic inside the cradle?
Volts on the charge terminals?
I'm hoping that the battery charging protection is inside the remote
and not the cradle.
info??
Thanks, mike
cisco kid 03-14-10, 11:45 PM How do you reattach keys that have popped off this remote, I have 3 keys that have just popped off from the faceplate. All popped off when the remote was dropped by accident , 1 time on hardwood floor and the other on carpet, otherwise the unit works fine, I just want to reattach the keys but how, glue did not work on first attempt
jeff1967 03-16-10, 08:08 PM I love my 880, but the last few times I charged it (overnight) I notice that it goes from full (3 dots) down to 2 quite fast. Usually it stays full on the battery display for several days to a week before going down to 2. Is this a sign of the battery weakening and being unable to keep that full charge? I always make sure that it is indeed charging when I press it gently into the magnetic cradle.
I've had it for (about) 2 years and I don't normally leave it in the charger. I usually wait until its down to 1 or 2 dots on the indicator. Any thoughts?
JBaumgart 03-16-10, 09:29 PM I've always charged mine after each use, so I cannot answer your question. I've owned it since they first came out, and have never had a battery problem.
I used to have a second 880 that I bought a year or two later, but my wife wore out the volume buttons (always fiddling!) so I ended up replacing that one with the Harmony One. I plan on keeping the older 880 until it no longer works.
My Watch TV activity works to perfection, but I'd like to know how I would go about setting up the remote to right to the PVR device once everything is turned on.
phdeane 03-17-10, 12:43 AM My Watch TV activity works to perfection, but I'd like to know how I would go about setting up the remote to right to the PVR device once everything is turned on.
That's not really how the Harmony remotes work. When you set up the activity, "Watch TV" in this case, did you select "Watch TV ( DVR or PVR other than TiVo)," when asked?
Basically, all the commands you need for your PVR/DVR should be available to you within the activity. If there are other device (PVR) commands you want, simply add them to the "Watch TV" activity.
I would also suggest you read the links provided in the first post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=7285760#post7285760) of this thread. It should give you a better understanding of this concept.
Florida 03-17-10, 11:22 AM Jeff - My experience was similar to yours with my 890's - the batteries lasted me about two years. I bought new ones from Logitech - I remember them costing in the neighborhood of $30/each.
I love my 880, but the last few times I charged it (overnight) I notice that it goes from full (3 dots) down to 2 quite fast.

I think you're doing good to have a lithium battery maintain a status for a year. After that you typically see depletion. So you won't see the usual life span of the battery. IMO what you are seeing is normal after two years. I'd say buy a new battery or hang in there until it gets really low and then replace it. Check eBay for replacements.

Thanks for the info, glad to know I can replace the battery if the actual performance degrades....I'll be checking in to it. :)

I'll be checking availability for battery replacement, I may also be considering a Harmony One if there is trouble down the road. Thanks for the response! :D

Haven't even thought about my battery (over 3.5 years). Then again, it stays on the charger upwards of 22+ hours a day.
amateur121 03-17-10, 09:15 PM my 880 randomly goes into "testing" mode. it usually flashes TESTING twice then goes back to home screen. It may do this several times in a row. after its done, the remote thinks everything is off....so I have to go through the help button and turn everything off then back on again.
i just installed the latest firmware in safemode. Battery is fully charged. I have done the paper in the battery compartment trick as well.
Any ideas?

Not sure why it would be resetting, but instead of going through the help when it thinks everything is off, why not just cover up the emitter (or go to another room) and "turn on" the activity you are using at the moment.
Everything back in sync really quick :)
I've had my 880 for maybe two years ago and generally love it (other than some minor battery/charging issues). This past weekend I had to reload the Windows XP operating system on my computer, and of course reinstall the Harmony software.
Plugged my remote back in to the computer after the software reinstall, logged in with my account (no problems here) and it "updated" my remote. Well, mostly it f'd it up. Remembered a few of my devices, but not all - and all of my custom setup activities were wiped clean and replaced by a few generic ones, none of which worked 100%. Are my old activity settings gone forever or are they stored somewhere in the bowels of Logitech? Is there a different way to go about "updating" my 880 back to how it was yesterday without having to start from scratch?
thanks,
rmp

First thing to check is whether the setup shown in your account has changed from what it was. Then..
If it looks just like it always has, then I would suggest trying to update the remote again.
If the same changes you saw on the remote also appear in the account, then you need to check that you signed in to he correct account and, if you did use the correct account, contact Logitech and let them know that the settings in your account changed without your participation.
I have an 880, but am trying to help a friend with an 890 on which the screen seems to have died. Backlight is there, goes on and off with glow button, etc. but there is no image or info displayed.
All functions and buttons seem to work ok once you know where they are. Tried the "pull the battery and reinsert holding down Off button" reset, but no help.
Has anyone had this issue on an 880 or 890 and did you find any fix?
Thanks

If your friend decides to sell the wireless extender that came with the 890 have him drop me a line... I need a second one.

Disconnect the battery
Let is sit overnight or even a few days
Reconnect the battery - I have read that this works too
watchcricket 04-07-10, 10:41 PM I am new to Harmony remote and so far, I love it!
I have a quick question and appreciate your help/time.
Is there a way we can dedicate the buttons to always work with a particular device? I mean, when the PVR is active, can the "Mute" button always mute my audio receiver? (I don't want to switch to a device and then press the mute button).
Thanks in advance.

Many thanks for confirming. However, could you please give some details/pointers on how to achieve this.
Thanks in advance.

A common mistake for new Harmony users (you'll find it explained many times earlier in this forum) is to not appreciate the Activities concept of the Harmony remote. It makes the Harmony different than remotes you've used before and makes it much more valuable, so you will want to setup your Activities properly. That will resolve your questions with NO extra effot on your part.
You didn't describe your environment so lets take a common case. First, you want to tell the Harmony about each of your devices. Chances are you've already done that.
Next, you want to define the Activities that you and your family use. Define them one at a time. You will have a Watch TV Activity, and probably a Watch DVD Activity. You may want to add others as well.
When you setup the Watch TV Activity you will be asked which Devices are used. You'll tell it that you use the TV, the PVR, and if you use a sound system you'll tell it that too. One of the questions will be which Device controls the volume. You're pretty close to done at that point. Answer any remaining questions that the software asks, update your Harmony, and then try it.
If you've setup the Activity properly, when you press the Watch TV button your TV will turn on, your PVR will turn on, your sound system will turn on; they will all be set to the proper inputs. The Volume buttons will control the proper device. The Mute button will control the proper device. The channel buttons will control the proper device. When you press the Off button all of the devices will be turned off.
If someone manually turns one of your devices on or off the Harmony won't know that that happened. Just press the Help button on the Harmony and answer the questions and things will be back in sync.
Once your Activities are setup you should almost never want or need to touch the Device button. In the uncommon situation where there is some Device function that isn't already on your main Harmony buttons, you can add that button to your Activity - but most people don't need to do that.
Hope that helps. Have fun and ask again if you're still having problems.

ponycar5 04-14-10, 11:04 PM I am trying to make a custom activity which allows me to set my Sony TV sleep timer to a specific amount of time. I need to go through a series of menus to get there because the original remote doesn't have a sleep button. I have the activity working great! But since it's, it's own activity, the remote remains in that mode when finished. Is there a way to make the remote go immediately back to the main activity screen, without having to press the "Activity" button?
spec1alk 04-20-10, 12:54 PM Guys, I am not able to read through all 200 pages of this thread. I am hoping someone can answer my question here or provide me a link to an answer. I am sure this has been asked in this thread already.
I have a Dish Network ViP722 HD DVR + Receiver.
I have setup this device with my TV & Blu-Ray player using the harmony software.
So far it seems like all of the functionality that the Dish Network remote has is reflected in the Harmony 880 as far as TV watching.
I think I found out how to access the DVR functionality using the "Device" button then "PVR" on the LCD. Is there a way I can add access to functions without having to select the device? For instance, I want to control PiP Swap, PiP Movie, and the DVR button.
Is the best bet to add an activity for watching DVR content? I would be interested to hear others thoughts on how they use the remote with a Dish Network ViP722 HD DVR + receiver.
Also, is it me or are the FF, Rev, Play, Pause, etc keys hard to use? It seems to me like they sit a little low on the remote.
Does anyone have problems keeping the power between the ViP722 and the remote in sync? I have seen a couple cases recently where it was out of sync. As much as I hate to say it, I could see myself using the Harmony in combination with the ViP remote.
I have ordered an AVR receiver that should be showing up in a couple days and speakers early next week. Am I able to simply add this device in the Harmony setup software and sync the device and it will use the AVR properly (turn on and switch HDMI)? Do I need to run the volume on the TV all the way down?
I have a Sony BDP-BX2 Blu-Ray player. It is the costco version of the S360. I read somewhere that it is better to use the Sony S360 in the Harmony setup for this player since it has the eject command. Any feedback?
Other than that, so far the remote seems useful.

To get started, you should check out the first post in this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=654853) and then read the online manual (http://209.187.238.153/movies/880_UserManual.pdf) referenced in that first post. It will give you a better understanding of how an activity is best used, and how that differs from a device. In a nutshell, properly set up, all the commands needed from the device menu should be in your activities. If not, add them.
The manual will help you a great deal.
Is anybody using the 880 to control a Sunfire Theater Grand IV? I'm using the standard Harmony database setup and it's fine except it's missing definitions for the left/right/up/down and "ok" buttons for the on-screen menu controls for doing setup. I don't have the original remote to learn from and the Harmony database is missing these definitions. Any ideas on how I can get these keys working on the Harmony for the Sunfire?

Check out post 170 of the above thread, it may point you in the right direction. There was an update for the codes on the TGIII, if those codes are the same you can try a couple of things.
See if adding the TGIII to the 880 adds the functionality you are looking for. You can learn those commands into a basic learning remote and teach them back to the 880 for the TGIV. The other option is if you can find the pronto HEX codes for each command you can email them to logitech support and they will add the commands to the device in your profile. Good luck hope it helps.
bweissman 04-27-10, 09:00 PM I don't have the original remote to learn from and the Harmony database is missing these definitions. This is apropos of nothing except that it's a notable usability feature I wish more manufacturers provided.
My home theater (which is badly in need of updating) uses a Proceed AVP as the pre/pro. This unit has an infrared sender in the main unit which can send any code to program a learning remote. This is especially useful because the AVP's remote is small and meek, (er, rudimentary), but the main unit can send the IR code for any function the box can accomplish. Brilliant.

Thanks, this is incredibly helpful information. Unfortunately, I still seem to be out of luck. I looked at the PDF from post #170, and it lists a lot of codes but I don't see anything for menu left/right/up/down or ok. I'm starting to wonder if I'm missing something (like it's in the database but I'm not seeing it) since it isn't in the PDF either. I also added a TGIII as a device, but it seems to have the same button options.
I really appreciate the feedback. I will try posting on the Sunfire thread to see if there are any answers there.
Thumbs way up to Harmony support -- I sent them a note asking about the Sunfire direction keys and overnight they had loaded it into my remote configuration. This is the first time I've used their support for a configuration issue and I'm very impressed. Problem solved!
cyfyguy 05-02-10, 12:25 PM Anyone know how I can issue the _same_ macro _twice in a row_ from the _same_ button?
My experience has been that pressing the macro button a second time simply takes you to the activity sub menu.
My Lutron light controller offers a "toggle" command, but currently I need to program two buttons on the remote since pressing the same macro twice seems to make the remote say "I just did that, so I'll assume you want the sub-activity screen..."
JayRains 05-02-10, 08:19 PM I've had my remote for a couple of years now so it is way out of warranty but it and the charger have been sitting in a drawer for the last couple of years. Now I have so many remotes I thought I would dust it off and try it out again. The battery seemed completely dead which wasn't surprising. When I plugged in the charger and placed the remote on it the lcd screen just flickered and when I removed it from the charger the remote dies. So my first reaction was that it was a dead battery. I removed the battery and plugged it into the computer and after the testing screen comes up the the lcd screens still flickers. Any idea what is wrong with this remote? Is it completely dead? Will getting a new battery matter at all?
JayRains 05-03-10, 01:35 AM got it working it just needed a firmware update.
CAWwindy1 05-13-10, 07:26 PM Am I missing something during device settings for TV on my Harmony settings . Mine are as follows :
How do you change inputs for your TV using original remote?
I have ( Method # 3 ) checked off
Review the list of inputs and , if necessary make changes by editing the source input names .
My source inputs are listed as :
Air
Input1
Input2
Input3
Input-Front
HDMI1
HDMI2
HDMI-Front
When cycling through inputs does your TV skip over inputs that are not connected ?
I have ( NO ) checked off
Select the remote buttons to press to :
Display the source input menu: InputNext
Cycle through source inputs : Direction Down
Confirm the source input : Select
When you select inputs from the on-screen input menu, is Air always the default selection ?
I have ( NO ) checked off
Setting up your TV :
I have this selected : Stays on whatever it was on when it was turned off .
PS : Mine works off and on ---- sometimes I can cycle through Cogeco or Satellite or Air TV and everything works fine then the next time the TV blue light flickers like it is cycling through inputs but hangs on the last one selected and will not move and I have to do it manually .
JakiChan 05-19-10, 03:01 AM My 880 has started to have charging troubles. Does anyone know: when you put it in the cradle and it starts the slide show does the battery indicator blink? My slide show starts but no blinking, so I'm wondering if that means it isn't charging.
Did a search here on various terms and came up empty. Last week updated 880 with new AV receiver and this week went to add another activity and suddenly the the laptop(running Vista) and 880 are not communicating.
880 screen says USB Connected, but the laptop does not recognize the 880. Get the message "Plug the USB cable into the remote control, or press any button on the remote control to wake it up" on the Remote Software setup(running v7.7)
I tried 3 other cords ( I have other Harmony remotes), nothing.
I tried another computer that is running XP, nothing.
Made sure USB ports on both computers are working.
Took out battery and left it out overnight, no change.
Reinstall software, no change.
Turn off Norton Anti Virus, no change.
Ran the troubleshooting routines on Harmony Remote software, no change.
Called Logitech support and they basically said nothing else they can do and gave me 50% off a new one.
880 works fine but since I can't update it, i went ahead and order a new harmony one. Is there nothing else I can do or anyone have another suggestion on how to solve communication issue?
jsmiddleton4 06-10-10, 06:14 PM "but the laptop does not recognize the 880."
Problem is laptop's usb port not the 880.
Thanks for the reply, I tested the USB ports with other devices and the laptop USB are working correctly. I tried 2 different computers(one XP, the other Vista) plus used a USB expansion port as well.
880 screen says USB connected, the software(v7.7) does not recognize 880 as connected.
Just hate to pitch it as it still works and would be handy as Zone 2 remote.
Any other ideas?:o
cards66 06-11-10, 04:33 PM Hey guys, I am having an issue with my 880. I have a samsung lcd and an onkyo av receiver. My issue is that when I hit the "off" button it turns my receiver off like it should but the tv it turns off and then right back on again. I have changed the settings to take longer between commands? and I put the sensitivity to 0. None of these helped it still goes off then right back on. It does power on like it should when I start my activity so I'm at a loss as to what the issue could be. I really appreciate any help.
jsmiddleton4 06-11-10, 05:33 PM Any other ideas?
Use a PC, use the USB port on the back of the computer. First, make sure you check device manager and remove any extra USB drivers that Windows tried to install. Make sure 880's battery is charged. Might not hurt to take the battery out and put it back in to 880 does hard reset.
For laptops that don't have a fully compliant usb thing going on there is a cable with two big usb ends on it that plug into 2 usb ports on the laptop and then mini-usb into the 880.
SVTarHeel 06-18-10, 12:04 PM A friend recently started using an 880 and it got me to thinking how nice it would be for my dad to have a simplified process for TV watching, etc. Currently, the only involved components are a Samsung HD TV, Time Warner STB and a Panasonic DVD player/recorder, (I checked and all three are in the Harmony database) and a Vizio VSB200 Soundbar will soon be added.
In looking around online for the 880, I've started to wonder if it might be a bit of overkill. I really like everything about my friend's 880 but, since I have a pretty uncomplicated setup, would anyone have thoughts about the appropriateness/usability of downgrading my interests to a lesser (cheaper) Harmony model?

The only thing that makes the 880 overkill is the ability to handle more devices than the system has... lesser Harmony remotes have very similar control capabilities and program much the same way. The real differentiating factors are more in seemingly gingerbread features like auto-glow, rechargeable batteries, color touch screen, favorite channel icons and such.
I have a One, two 880s, two 610s, a 550 and a three 520s. They all do more or less the same thing... but I greatly miss the extra "gingerbread" features of the One and 880 when I use a 600 or 500 series (the auto-glow and rechargeable batteries, in particular).
You might also want to consider how the remote feels in your hand and how easy it is to operate by feel. In that regard, I rate the models I have in this order: One, 610, 880, 500s. The 500 series are pretty bad in this regard, actually. I only have them because they were extremely cheap ($17ea for the 520s!) refurbs for locations I couldn't justify any more money. That said, the 550 actually can handle as many components as the One or 880 can, so not all of the lower models are limited to only 5 or so devices. In fact, my 550 is programmed nearly identically to my One and is a "backup" to it - that system has 11 devices and 14 activities.
samsurd2 06-18-10, 03:13 PM Like jcalabria I also own more than one Harmony - in my case 2, an 880 and a 650. I got the 880 first. I'd been wanting to eliminate the "remote clutter" and Costco had them on sale for $100 about a year ago. It easily took care of the 5 devices in my primary HT system. More recently I set up a secondary HT system with 4 devices and got a 650 to handle them (it only handles 5 max). Unlike jcalabria however, I'm perfectly ok without some of the "gingerbread features". In fact, had the 650 been available when I got the 880, I probably would've bought one then since I'm not a huge fan of special charging docks, non-replaceable rechargable batteries, etc. OTOH, that's JMO. :D
jcalabria 06-18-10, 03:36 PM Like jcalabria I also own more than one Harmony - in my case 2, an 880 and a 650. I got the 880 first. That's cool... my point was that it's not a question of whether a remote is "overkill" for a particular system... they all do pretty much the same thing functionality-wise (subject to the 5 device limitation on some models).
The real difference is in the features and whether they are worth paying for to a particular user, which is a personal decision, not a technical issue.

A friend recently started using an 880 and it got me to thinking how nice it would be for my dad to have a simplified process for TV watching, etc.
If your Dad is like mine, then get the 880. I have an 880 and a 7xx and I find the buttons on the 7xx a bit small and harder to press. And the screen isn't quite as clear. So do your Dad a favour and get him the one with the larger and clearer screen and buttons.

Your Dad will love it, and you'll be doing him and yourself a big favor. It will simplify his life and make using the equipment a lot more convenient and friendly. You can add the channel icons for the channels he watches most often and he'll love it for that alone.
I should mention that the Harmony One buttons and LCD are brighter than on the 880 and much easier to read. The layout is improved too, although the 880 is also a good device.

bernie33, did you mean a specific Harmony remote (brighter buttons, etc.)?
I went to Amazon to see if they had any decent close up pics of the layout and happened to notice that the last 5 reviews, all in the last 5 days, are all 1 star. It could be semi-organized sabotage, but I've also read on here that some have had 4+ years with no problems and others have buttons falling off much sooner. I did find one locally for $70 but, the more I consider it, I'm getting skittish about a 'previously owned' 880. At the same time, spending over $100 more for a Harmony One seems a bit extravagant for what I need.
Thanks for all the feedback so far. It's given me more to think about but it helps a ton.

Right: in other words, do not get him an 880. Get him a Harmony One.
The One is functionally identical to the 880, but is physically better in every respect. The buttons are easier to press, the labels are easier to read, and the charger is more reliable.
Smitty2k1 06-20-10, 01:27 PM I vote 650 all the way. I hated the recharging dock with my 880 it didn't always work. Also the 880 is not very durable if it takes any sort of hit the battery disloges and it resets itself. Not TOO big of a deal but you have to wait a minute or so to use it.
Also, the buttons on the 880 are tiny and hard to press. I much prefer the big rubber buttons of the 650.
The 650 takes standard batteries (I have a million AA's laying around anyways...) and it still has the auto-glow when you pick it up.
If you need more than the 5 devices I'd suggest the 700 as it is the same 'new style' of the 650. The rechargeable batteries are better because they charge with a USB cable instead of the stupid cradle.

Yes, typo. Sorry. I meant to suggest that you consider the Harmony One for the brighter buttons and screen, and somewhat better layout.
We also do have an 880 which we've had for several years and it continues to work fine, although relegated to a place that isn't used as often as our main TV room.
At one of our relative's, they have an 880 that got stepped on so that the LCD is cracked/shattered. It is still readable though and the remote continues to work properly. We were all surprised that it worked at all after the screen got broken, so of course we're all impressed with the quality of the device.
fueld26 06-26-10, 12:42 AM I have been searching the web for an hour trying to figure out how to use my 880 to set scenes on my Lutron Spacers. I didn't want to fork over the $$$ to get the lutron remote as I figured any Harmony remote would do the trick. Well, I found that to set new scenes on the spacers you need to hold down the scene button until the dimmers register the scene. The scene button on the 880 only sends a short signal to activate the scene, not to set it.
Well, after reading that I can contact customer service to have them change the settings to be continuous, I decided I didn't want to wait until monday so I started thinking. It occured to me that the volume up/down and the channel up/down probably fire continuously so I simply set my lutron light controller settings to use volume up for scene 1, down for scene 2, you get the idea. It worked like a charm! Man I love this remote!
Anyone using their 880 to control direct tv hr23-700? The issue I am having is the 880 will not turn on and off the dvr. In order for it to turn on I always have to hit the help button. The 880 is not able to turn off the dvr even with the help button. I have tried changing it from 500ms to 700ms and up to 1000ms and nothing seems to resolve the issue. Any suggestion?
JakiChan 07-04-10, 03:50 AM I may have to get a Harmony One. The 880 just won't charge anymore. I'm kind of dreading it, since I don't think touch screens work as well - I can't use it without looking at it and trying my friend's I often hit the wrong one (the bottom ones were hard to hit). With they made it more durable...but I've had it for 3 years. (Well, they did replace it once.)

my 890 stopped charging too but i found that the cradle was bad. i ordered a new cradle from logitech for $16 shipped.
i have 2 890s an 880 and a 900 and although the 890/880 types are programed with similar functions in the same places, using the 900 is an easy transition and was reasonably effortless to get use to.

I had many of the same worries, and after getting the ONE over a year ago, I'm so glad I did. I had three 880 replacements before giving up. The ONE has been fantastic with no problems ever.
BoogieNY 07-11-10, 11:02 AM For those of you who have the One/900, how long have you had yours? I've gone through three 880's and the fact I can't charge any of the three batteries I've got is pushing me over the edge. I tried the One awhile back but didn't care for it. Then I called Logitech for help and they said I'm SOL because it's past a year, and they don't sell the 880 or parts anymore (I wanted to buy a new cradle because they said mine was the problem -- TJ7, if you have a part number, please post it here and I'll call them ASAP).
Logitech's response to my problem was to offer me a 50% discount on any new remote from their site so...I figure I'll get the 900, because eventually I'd like some RF integration into my system.
I just hate dropping $200 on a new remote when the 880 works fine -- when it's not giving me that "hit the --> button or charge the battery." I am wondering if I should go with something a little less intentionally short-lived.

Although I am aware of folks who have had issue with the One, I've had mine for just shy of two years now... no issues at all. My first 880 is about 3.5 years and also is still working fine (handed down to my son). It has the original cradle design and still has the original battery, too. I also just bought a second refurbished 880.
BTW... the 880/890 cradle is available on the Logitech website (http://buy.logitech.com/store/logib2c/en_US/DisplayCategoryProductListPage/categoryid.13978800) for $10. I put one in the shopping cart and it showed "In Stock".

Sounds very much like my situation. I've had my ONE for two years now? Can't recall exactly - for as long as it has been out. I've also been through three 880's and got sick of it. I took them up on the 50% offer (which was just a few bucks less than I could have bought one "on the street." but at least exchanging it would be easier. I've had NO problems with the ONE, and am glad I made the switch.
BoogieNY 07-11-10, 05:13 PM Thanks -- I'm really fed up with the crap I've been dealing with with the 880, and I need to do something. I tried the One for a week and wasn't a huge fan, but only because I was not in tune with the touchscreen. I tried a friend's recently and liked it, so I figure I'll get the 900. No choice at this point, the 880 (the charging aspect of it, anyway) is done and I've had enough.
Thanks for the feedback -- glad you both are happy with yours. Hope I have a similar experience :-)
Thanks again :)
tivojim 07-14-10, 11:17 PM My 880 quit charging a while back, and Logitech offered me the half price deal. Are any of ya'll familiar with a charger that plugs into the wall? I saw one on ebay with an extra battery for under $20. I really hate to chunk a good remote, if the cradle is the problem.
Davird_Jr 07-19-10, 09:36 PM Looks like I am not the only one with an 880 that won't charge. Family is so used to one button remote capability that it is becoming a crisis here. All of our equipment is in a closet in another room and we use a infrared repeater. 880 stopped charging and was dead. It's about a year and a half old so I figured the battery was at the end of its life. Ordered a new battery from Amazon and put it in and it seemed to be working fine. Now a month later the new battery is dead and won't charge. Tried taking the charger apart based on googling the problem, but that doesn't seem to be working. Should I order a new charger cradle from Logitech? Or should I order the battery charger from Amazon? Has anybody had luck with either choice?
Very frustrated.
It could be the cradle not making contact properly. I had this problem and I ended up dropping bits of solder on each contact to raise the contact point. That worked fine for me. Of course your problem could be different in that when you put the 880 on the charging station it says it's charging (you get the nice animation) but it isn't.
Davird_Jr 07-20-10, 11:41 AM The charger contacts on both the remote and the cradle seem to be corroded also. Could that affect performance. BTW, we get no animation. The remote is completely dead now and will do nothing at all.
blazeblaze 07-20-10, 02:33 PM Davird_Jr,
Yes, the corrosion on the metal contacts is probably causing your issue. Clean off the corrosion on both the remote and the charger, maybe with a bit of fine sand paper or the tip of a small flat head screw driver. If you are not seeing the animation, then it is not getting the charge via the contacts. Let us know if that fixes your issue.
Davird_Jr 07-21-10, 06:01 PM Will try it this weekend. Thanks for the tip. Out of town till then. Is the Amazon plug in charger any good?

it could be just a film build-up on the contacts...
First try a clean pencil eraser. I was having charging issues, and called Logitech. They told me to do this, and afterwards it works great.
If that doesn't work, I'm wondering if you could get a USB power brick (wall wart) and use the cable to charge the remote... It seems to charge when its connected to the PC when updating...

Ok I cleaned the contacts with an eraser as suggested. It seems to have worked!! I left it in the charger for two days and now it is charged and looks like a full charge. All bars displayed. Thanks and I'll keep my fingers crossed.
jsmiddleton4 07-28-10, 10:54 AM Well one of my buttons has fallen out. Looks like inner rubberish membrane has dried out and the button just fell out.
Not good. About 2 years old. I've emailed Logitech support. Not holding my breath.
Harmony One's and the 700's on sale locally. Won't spend any money on repairing this one. Friend has a broken 880 and I'll ask him for it and see if I can cannibalize it. Up to now my 880 has been flawless. Have two in fact.....
A little piece of what I'm assuming is the membrane liner that goes between the button and the actual contact has also come out. I'm guessing the flexible liner/membrane held the button and also provided the actual contact on the circuit board switch. Membrane/liner cracked, it is the end button, button lets loose, button falls out. Remote hosed.

Can't get it repaired anyway, at least no practical way unless your self fix-it works, of course.
It's likely Logitech will offer you a 50% off coupon for any Harmony remote of your choice. You have to get it from them, but I just picked up the 900 (RF version of the One) for $199 with the coupon. My 890 keys were getting increasingly harder to use so I finally gave up.
jsmiddleton4 07-28-10, 03:15 PM Thanks ph.... All the self fixes I can find assume the parts are in working order and you just need to beef up the little striking mechanism or clean the contacts. If I can cannibalize another 880 I might be ok. Otherwise it is time to replace it.
At least a 50% coupon is Logitech sorta standing by their products.

Yes, for the most part they do stand by their products. I received a free replacement charger from Logitech a couple years ago that worked much better. I only recently started having charger-related issues again. I got a good 3+ years out of my 890 so I can't complain too much. And then now I get the brand spankin' new 900 for $200 - well, again, I can't complain too much. :)
jsmiddleton4 07-29-10, 10:08 AM Is there a way to read the programming in the 880 and restore it back to the database? I messed up my on-line database and if I can read the database from the 880 it would save me a ton of time.
jsmiddleton4 07-30-10, 11:21 AM Picked up Harmony One on sale with rebates at Frys for just under 150.
Like it a lot although still getting used to it. Its similar but different.
Logitech did send me the 50% off coupon. But simplier and cheaper to use Frys locally.

Don't know of one. I tried to figure a way to make a local backup of the database contents, but didn't put the time in to see if it could be restored. I'd asked Logitech support about making the copy and they gave me a procedure where it would download. Can't remember the format.
If you haven't asked the support people, I'd at least start there.
sgbroimp 07-30-10, 04:33 PM My 880 is four years old and has given good service with fairly light use. Yes I am on my second charger but that is not so bad. All works fine except the up portion of the volume rocker switch. It has gotten proressively worse, not sending out any signal wave, despite having reprogrammed it with a fresh up volume command from the original remote. Down portion of the switch works perfectly. Sometimes it is so crazy that I push up and it actually lowers the volume! Could there be a mechanical, rather than electronic issue here?

Yes, it is certainly possible. I finally retired my 890 due to this very reason. The volume keys became increasingly harder to press. I suppose if you press it hard enough, it could cause the other volume key (down).
sgbroimp 07-30-10, 05:24 PM No way to refurb that part of it but taking apart, bending some metal? If I do replace, what are folks recommending? Just get another 880? Want to keep the cost down.

Some have had success taking the remote apart and cleaning the contacts. Others have even put a dab of glue on it. I actually tried this and it worked a little better for a short while. Inevitably it came back and even got worse so I reassigned the volume commands.

I would just reassign the vol +/- (Up & Down) commands to the two up & down arrows located just above the EXIT & GUIDE butons. This would work and be cheaper than a new remote.
