Hard to justify spending money for questionable repairs. oman321 08-03-10, 08:21 AM Thanks, Fellas. I might tear into it as a last resort. I saw a repair outfit on the web that claims to do simple fixes like a botton or two for $30 or so. Anyone got any feedback on these types of places? sgbroimp, You can successfully fix your 880 and get that button working again. I did it to 2 880's recently, a replacement after years of trouble free use and the original which got replaced because of that problem :p. Like yours my volume up button was not responding unless pressed very hard. With the remote opened up I used Fantastic orange scented degreaser with a QTip after gently lifting the button pad to clean underneath that particular button. The button pad for the 880 is different than what you might usually see for a remote button pad if you have opened up remotes before. The 880 uses a unique disc layered paper/plastic pad over the circuit board, when you press a buttton down it presses down the disc onto the circuit board. You can easily get to the buttons along the edges for the most part, but the buttons further in are more difficult. From looking at the remote pad I believe what is happening is that the glue which holds the metal discs onto the pad is eventually seeping down under the disc making it more and more difficult for the contact to be made. Good luck, hope this helps. BTW you can test, before reassembling the remote so be sure to that. sgbroimp 08-04-10, 07:46 AM Thanks, Oman. May indeed give that a shot, though I am also now considering an outfit on LI (well rated by customers) that will fix for $24 including shipping back with 24 hour turnaround. Will post results of whatever I do for others, however. araponur 08-28-10, 10:26 PM Has anyone has any issues with controlling the volume for the Vizio VP505XVT with this remote? I've even tried to "learn the command" several times with no luck. I appreciate all your help. blazeblaze 08-29-10, 02:49 AM araponur, In case you haven't already, you might want to try learning the command in RAW mode (which is different from the regular learning mode). It seems like I had to do that once years ago to get a command working. araponur 08-29-10, 07:15 AM Thanks for your reply. After playing around a bit more it is just when I am on an activity (ie. watch tv, watch dvd) that the remote does not want to control volume. However, if I select devices, then TV, the remote controls the volume. I've gone through the setup like 10 times, verifying that "I use the TV to control volume" and updated remote but no luck. I'even did the RAW command learning for volume. I use to use a sound system to control volume but with my new setup its just the tv. Any ideas? It seems like the remote doesn't want to downgrade on the audio quality :-). Weird... blazeblaze 08-29-10, 11:50 PM araponur, Check your button mappings in the Activity. It sounds like it when you're in the TV's Device mode, you're able to change the volume ok...so I suspect that your mappings might be wrong even though you have answered the setup wizard's question with "I use the TV to control volume". I bet that it's just mapped incorrectly. Look for the hard volume buttons in the list, and see what device and command is mapped for them. araponur 08-30-10, 10:11 PM araponur, Check your button mappings in the Activity. That was it!!!! thank you so much blazeblaze... although i had this remote for 5 years i did not run into this issue until now. Now if i can only stop the volume button sticking that would be great. or it might be time to get a new one... Thilden 09-08-10, 01:26 PM I am having a problem with my 880 remote, it will no longer dim after the idle time so the battery dies if you don't remember to hit the glow button. Also once I take the remote off of the charger the screen continuously blinks unless you take the battery out and replace it again. I guess it took a few to many hits on the hardwood floors. sgbroimp 09-21-10, 03:43 PM Got my 880 back fast, cheap and fixed properly for under $30 including return postage. This is far better than replacing. They even did a comprehensive written eval. of the unit which was also helpful. Turn around was a couple of days. If anyone is interested, the gentleman's name is Quin Werthauer and he is in Merrick, NY. Email him at quin@optonline.net. Thanks to those who weighed in with other alternatives, but this one worked well for me! I agree that you do get used to button locations. A bugger finding some that you don't use so frequently. The 880 is shorter too which makes it a little easier when navigating with one hand. As long as you still have the original remote for the DVD player, reprogram the 880 again and have it learn the Power On from the original remote instead of using the default value stored in the Harmony database. It is possible that the value in the database has been changed and is no longer the correct one. vitod 09-29-10, 10:37 AM Maybe this will work. But, I can use your suggestion and make the 880 learn the dim on the original remote. Thing is, I want the 880 use the dim light code as a macro so when I press 'play', the DVD plays and the lights dim at the same time. It worked before and now it doesn't. Why? This is the only reason I keep having to reach for my Denon remote. :( Thanks! IMO: as you probably know you have to connect your 880 via USB to your PC when updating. You'll need to have the 880 and the remote from the Sirius tuner and need to "teach" the 880 those codes. The 880 has an IR signal receiver on it's end to learn codes from other remotes. The Logitech software can walk you through this as it has this function. It will tell you when to press the needed buttons on which remote to learn and program, etc. Unless your 880 remote is not setup properly. I would think the Logitech dbase would have the codes for your Sirius tuner. But if the Logitech software was not setup to know to use the Denon for your audio source and to use the Sirius as the tuner this could be your problem. I know for me I have various functions setup on my 880. Like Watch TV, Watch TV w/Stereo, Watch Blu-ray and so on. So when I select Watch TV w/Stereo the remote knows what to turn on and what remote functions to use for the equipment turned on. Here the remote knows to use the audio for my Marantz receiver but to change channels at the Comcast HD cable box. So, maybe adding a new function like what I've done here may help. Hope this helps... vo328 10-17-10, 04:28 PM SBMongoos, thanks for the suggestions. I think the IR programming is the only way to go as I've tried all combinations I could using the software. :) cristush 10-17-10, 06:31 PM I am using my 880 with a Denon 4810ci receiver. According to myremotesetup.com, your SC-H1 tuner is supported (Amplifier -> Radio Tuner -> Sirius), so you must find the codes for your remote in the Logitech database. That means you will not need to learn every command from your original remote, just add the device from the database. Good luck ! sawmill 10-18-10, 03:43 PM My 880 remote refuses to update with the following message "no skin supports this file". I recently purchased new computer with windows 7. I also searched this 880 forum regarding the "no skin ----" and there were no references to this in the entire 880 thread. Also noticed that as part of automatic login that there is listed "skinid" which is followed by "Harmony". Would appreciate help. This 880 is quite old so would not care to pay Logitech for assistance. With Logitech's free customer service expiring at 30 days, not so sure will get another Harmony. Any suggestions would be apprecicated. sawmill 10-18-10, 04:21 PM This is sawmill. Just tried to update the remote again and now it updates. So everything now okay. I think this happened as result of reinstalling remote software 4.4. When I went in to update, the updated software 7.7.0 was downloaded and this appears to have corrected any problem. This is why I always dread the new computer and updated computer software. Always seems that half the programs don't work any more. Thanks for all the help I didn't receive. Granted I didn't give you young fellars much time to reply. I found some commands not working for my devices, also, and I was forced to relearn them manually with the help of the original remote. I'm sure your channel commands will work fine after you will learn them manually. Good luck ! P.S. You do not need to learn manually ALL the commands, but only the commands that won't work. artcal 10-21-10, 04:04 PM Hi! Don't know if I'm doing this thread correctly but here goes! I have a Harmony 880 remote. It was operating fine until I switched to a Pioneer SC-05 AV Receiver. I have a Pioneer Elite 940HD TV, the aforementioned Pioneer SC-05 and a Dish Network VIP 622 receiver for satellite TV watching. I’ve set up the Harmony remote functions properly. In a nutshell, when I power-on the remote, everything turns on as it should except the AV receiver goes to HDMI 2 input and remains there instead of HDMI 1. I always have to go to "Help" on the Harmony Remote to fix the problem which has become tiresome. I’ve been in constant contact with Logitech Harmony Remote support and together we’ve tried everything but we’re getting nowhere. Logitech support is now saying the problem might be the Kuro–Link (HDMI Control). Unless I’m missing something my Pioneer Elite 940HD TV is pre-Kuro. Anyway, in my 940HD manual there is no reference to the Kuro-Link or HDMI control. However, the SC-05 does have HDMI control and it was set to “On” so I turned it off and tested the Harmony Remote – no change. Logitech support has been supportive but I'm at the point of throwing in the towel. Just thought the Harmony forum might have the answer. Thanks for your time! cristush 10-21-10, 05:09 PM In a nutshell, when I power-on the remote, everything turns on as it should except the AV receiver goes to HDMI 2 input and remains there instead of HDMI 1. I always have to go to "Help" on the Harmony Remote to fix the problem which has become tiresome. Maybe you should consider adding a command to select HDMI1 at the end of the power on sequence. Did you try that? Activities -> "Your activity name" -> Settings -> Review the settings for this Activity -> Yes, but I want to add more control of options and devices for this Activity -> Save .... (select the correct options) ... Next -> Add action for Pioneer SC-05 AV Receiver when the Activity starts -> click on "Add>" -> choose "Set it to this input: HDMI1" -> Next -> Save -> Yes, these settings are correct. -> Next -> Done -> Done Then, of course, update remote. artcal 10-21-10, 06:02 PM Thanks for your prompt response. I followed your instructions and tried it but no luck. For whatever reasons, it's stuck on the HDMI 2 input and won't budge. At this point together with Logitech Support, I've deleted, added, rearranged, adjusted delays, etc. to no avail. Run out of ideas and I'm at wits end. But nevertheless thanks for your input! cristush 10-22-10, 02:01 AM Thanks for your prompt response. I followed your instructions and tried it but no luck. Run out of ideas and I'm at wits end. But nevertheless thanks for your input! You're saying that when you press Help it solves your issue. It means that after a certain amount of time (after powering up) your receiver does indeed select the right input. Try adding a remote delay (use the same steps, but select "Send this infrared delay:", choose let's say 5 seconds) BEFORE the "Set it to this input:" action (you can order the actions using the blue arrows). Play with the delay interval (unfortunately, you have only 100ms, 200ms, 500ms, 1sec, 2sec, 5sec and 10 sec options) using the smallest interval that does the job. You can not edit the delay, you must Remove the action and create it again with the new interval that you choose. I hope this will do. mj73397 10-22-10, 11:31 AM Hi, I was thinking of buying one of these. I have digital cable with a DVR. I noticed that my on screen tv guide uses my A,B,C,D buttons on the time warner remote for certain things. Where would these be found on the 880? If I have everything powered on and watching cable tv and press the guide button to access the on screen guide are these A,B,C,D buttons going to be showing up in the lcd screen or do you have to go looking for them? My wife uses the on screen guide a lot so I need these buttons to be easily accessible. vo328 10-22-10, 05:01 PM The buttons will most likely show up on the LCD screen. This is the case for my SA8300HDC. mj73397 10-23-10, 03:01 PM Thanks. I found two new 510 models that will work better for me. jcalabria 10-23-10, 04:55 PM Thanks. I found two new 510 models that will work better for me. That would be a mistake, IMO. I have several 500 series Harmony remotes and they leave much to be desired. Mostly it's their horrible horrible layout... very awkward to use. Of course the feature set is smaller than an 880 or One, as well. All of my 500 series remotes are now collecting dust in the drawer because everyone in the house hated them. mj73397 10-23-10, 07:13 PM Well I only need it to run 3 things in one room and 4 in the other. And the colored keys at the bottom I can match up to my on screen guide buttons. jcalabria 10-24-10, 05:24 PM Well I only need it to run 3 things in one room and 4 in the other. And the colored keys at the bottom I can match up to my on screen guide buttons. My comments had nothing to do with how many devices you need to control. The 500 series just has a horrible button layout... it would still be horrible if you were trying to control one device. You have a bigger(potential) problem, though. You mentioned that you have a total of seven devices to control... the 510 can only do five devices. Unless you have at least two duplicate devices in the rooms (cable box is likely one), then the 510 will not work. mj73397 10-25-10, 05:48 PM I bought two separate 510 remotes, one for each room so I can set the wife up with the same watch tv button on each remote instead of trying to put it all on one. I programmed the first one and it works great. The color buttons at the bottom match to colored buttons on the on screen guide. Simplified things well for my situation. bizwiz41 10-30-10, 09:53 AM Hi All, I've searched for this issue, but haven't found any answers. My 880 remote recently started sending a "5" command on its own. It seems the slightest vibration can cause it to send the command. The family started commenting that the TV was changing channels on its own. I experienced this myslef this morning. It does it when the remote is just sitting by itself. I'm suspicious that the 5 key has "sticky residue" under it, most likely from the caramel apples the kids are eating this time of year. I am trying to avoid opening the remote up, as this is a touchy process. Has anyone experienced this issue, and have any suggestions or remedies? I haven't tried anything yet; I'm thinking of doing an "update remote" (though no changes) to see if it helps. Thanks, and Happy Halloween! bizwiz41 10-30-10, 09:46 PM Hopefully to save some trouble to everyone, I discovered it was not the remote at all. It is the cable box (Pace RNG110) that is the problem! I had the 880 down in my office trying an update, and she called to say the TV was doing the same "5" issue, but even worse. Thanks. Well, the answer to your question is I thought the "5" button may have gotten some "caramel apple" residue from the kids inside it. I picked up the remote the other day, only to have it stick to my hands! After thrity minutes of cleaning it, I thought I was set. But...the next day-sticky again! Hence, my suspicion it was a "human" cause, not equipment! BTW, I had to swap cable boxes (to keep sanity in the houselhold), and found that a reset of the box seemed to cure the problem. Speaking to Comcast, they seemed to convey this was becoming an issue with the new Pace boxes. They either need resets or refresh signals sent to correct many problems. lleider 10-31-10, 08:47 PM I have a Sony CT150 soundbar. I followed your instructions, actually both my son and I did, including updating the remote but I still can not get the projector to turn off. Everything turns on fine, and everything except the projector turns off fine. I just bought a new receiver and that is why we were even programming anything to begin with on the 890Pro. The projector was turning off just fine until we added the new receiver. I don't know what happened other than I just have a defective remote. What model would you recommend? I have the RF extenders also going to all my components. Thanks again for your help and advice. I don't know what changes you've done to determine your projector to not turn off like before, but you could also try increasing the inter-key delay for the projector (supposing that the remote is sending those two "Power off" commands too fast one after another). I also have a couple of questions: 1) what new receiver are you talking about? 2) does the projector receive at least one of the "Power off" commands? (I guess you should see that on the screen). If it does, then I would say your remote is not defective and we should continue tweaking the software configuration. :) JBaumgart 11-26-10, 12:59 PM A couple of other questions: 1. Now if I think again, there could be also an inter-device delay issue. I'm thinking at the possibility that your Onkyo (newly introduced to your array of devices) is powering off just before the projector, so if the inter-device delay is too small then the projector does not react to the first "Power off" command, but only to the second. So, if the tweaking of the inter-key delay will not solve your issue, maybe you should try increasing the inter-device delay (but not until setting the inter-key delay back to the initial value). Good luck ! :) golffnutt 11-30-10, 12:27 PM Now if I think again, there could be also an inter-device delay issue. First you need to decide if you will use your new Bluray player for BOTH DVD's and Bluray disc's or whether you want to use both devices. If you will use only the Bluray player for both types of discs, just delete the DVD player from the Watch DVD Activity and substitute the Bluray player, If you want use both devices, leave the old DVD Activity alone. When you tell it to Learn the codes, the software will instruct you on how to position your original Denon remote and your Harmony remote, and when to press the button on the Denon. I started a new thread about this problem I have but felt it might be worthwhile to post in this thread too. I have a Samsung PN63C8000 display and I need to change the aspect ratio on my TV for certain activities. The Samsung remote doesn't have a discrete way to set aspect ratio, I have to press the "P.SIZE" button on the Samsung remote repeatedly until I get the one I want. In the Harmony software I don't see discrete aspect ratio options in the drop down menu for my TV. Not even a P.SIZE option. There is an "Ascpect" option which I suspect is the same as p.size. First question is, is there some way to send a discrete remote code to select an aspect ratio without toggling through all the aspect ratio options? If so, how? If not what should I do? How do I get the remote to automatically set the correct aspect ratio? The number of p.size key presses I need varies based on which activity I'm in and which activity I'm switching to. Can the Harmony handle this kind of logic? If the Harmony can't tackle this it will be the first time I discovered something the Harmony couldn't do in many years of ownership. Please advice. The Ascpect is likely the same thing a p.size. Just try it to confirm. Worst case just learn it from the original remote. I do not believe the the Samsung has a discrete code for the various picture sizes, and the remote is not smart enough to remember the current size and to switch to a new preselected size. You have a few options: 1. Program a number of soft keys that make a specific change for your common changes, e.g. 4:3 to 16:9, 16:9 to 4:3, Zoom1 to 16:9, etc. These soft key will need sequences define that correspond to the actual number of p.size key presses. 2. Multiple manual key presses the way you would have done it with your original remote. 3. Change your viewing habits so that 16:9 is the used 99% of the time. I have had my current LCD TV for over a year and have never changes the size. My PVR does have a few small letterbox programs, usually Space channel, and I cycle to get to to Zoom2 using the PVR remote code. I just got a Samsung TV that has internet, but not of the best way to integrate the apps, etc into my current config. I don't know that I will use it much, but it would be nice for some quick info. I just purchased a samsung PN50C8000 and I have the 880 pro. If you want to control the apps just hit devices on the remote and select the TV. Make sure for the TV device you program a button to take you to Apps page. Or, if you want to have an activity designated just for using the apps, just setup an activity where all you use is the TV (and receiver if applicable). Then everything else can shutoff while your using the TV. You will have to do some tweaking for the activity which will send the command to the tv to go into "app mode". Or option 3, you could setup an additional page on every activity which has all commands needed to run the apps on the TV. This would require a considerable amount of programming because you would need to setup roughly 8 slots for each activity on another page all sending TV commands like up down enter etc. Hope this helps. I personally use option 1 OhMyTVC15 02-09-11, 03:36 PM I've never understood AVSforums reason for putting all questions into one thread but anyway.....I have a Harmony 510 that limits me to 5 devices. I've verified with the Onkyo remote, which has no such problems. Is there a fix I could attempt or is it time to invest in a Harmony One? Once you install the adapter, do the activities "Play DVD" or "Play Netflix" directly play those two or does it only switch PS3 on and you have still have to navigate to video and play those yourself using your harmony remote? Thanks in advance. The default on mine is that it just switches all devices accordingly, but you still have to navigate the menus to fire up the movie. But it may be possible to set up a macro sequence to get the behavior you want. Alternatively (and probably easier) would be to set the PS3 to start a movie as soon as it is inserted. I believe that's a settable option, but not positive. oman321 03-31-11, 08:01 AM Hey folks, The up portion of the volume control on my 4-5 y.o. 880 has become extremely unresponsive with my Onkyo receiver. You can attempt it, I successfully cleaned and regained full function of the volume up button on my 880. The volume up button had gotten ridiculous, so I opened it up and lifted the pad in that area and used Fatastic Orange scented degreaser with a QTip. Put battery in before reassembling to test out and it now works perfectly. The glue which holds the little metal discs in place seems to seap underneath the disc thus reducing the contact, volume up seems to be the worst offender. mfarlow 04-11-11, 06:22 PM I'm using an IR repeater for my components hidden in the closet. If you are only switching activities and the latest activity is still watching TV then the TV should remain on. All other equipment no longer needed will get turned off. I would start by looking at the activities where the issue occurs. Connect your remote and login to the remote software and check your setup for your activities. Maybe it's only in the activities you describe above. But, if you are watching a Blu-ray (where you need the TV) and then choose "Watch TV" as an activity it should shut off the Blu-ray but leave the TV on (at least this depending on your setup...meaning you may be using a receiver and such for a theater that also get turned off when you choose the activity to "Watch TV"). You can walk through each activity to be sure it's setup correctly. If need be additional commands can be sent at specific times. But it's sounds like your TV is getting turned off when you switch from watching a Blu-ray to watching TV. No reason it should be. TJ7 07-13-11, 03:07 PM ... Then when you want to "hand off" control to you wife select this activity rather than the power off button. This should leave these two devices on and turn off all the other devices. But this may create another problem. The 880 keeps track of the state of all devices, so if you use another remote to turn off the devices or do it manually, the 880 will not turn them on when you next use the 880 to select an activity as it believes that they are already on. What you should do is first press power off to get the devices and remote in sync, and then select the activity. The story does not end there. I've done the folded up paper battery trick in the battery compartment - and fixed that issue. But it still had stopped charging reliably in the stock cradle (I've had mine 3-4 years, but it's been pretty spotty the past year or so). It would beep on and off in terms of charging. But finding "just the right spot" in the cradle was getting harder and harder. This morning I realized that if I slightly lifted up one side of the remote while sitting in the charger, it got a good solid charging connection. So I used a few small strips of tape to make a shim on the cradle (on the side I lifted) and so far it seems to be working. It seems odd that lifting one side up off of the cradle slightly fixes it, but it does. Cleaning off the contacts was far less effective than my little tape shim/spacer so far. Fingers crossed. Do the 890 and Harmony One remotes have similar issues? Like I said, I have 3-4 years out of this remote, so it doesn't really owe me anything (a few of the lesser used buttons require pretty firm pushes now) but we'll see how long I can push it. rmp tivojim 09-14-11, 03:18 PM I fooled with that cradle for a year....drove me crazy. This is very important. I've been using these remotes for nine years and any/all configuration I have is done completely through the Logitech software which accesses the Logitech server on the web. This is shared with all its various remotes so you will not have a problem with that. The software is almost completely non responsive. Maybe it's because there's alot of people that got remotes/devices for christmas???? sivartk 12-26-11, 05:43 PM Yes, I got a message saying that they are having a server overload. I was trying to move my 880 (replacing 550 which buttons don't work) to one setup and inserting my new 900 to another. Should have given up, but after 3 hours, both setups are transferred (the new 900 and 1100 you have to start over from scratch with a new account) de8212 12-26-11, 09:52 PM Thanks sivartk I'm getting decent responses from their server now but having a hard time programming a new blu ray player. I added the device and go through the steps where it wants me to press certain buttons on the manufacturer remote. It detects all of them. It asks for a "Function" button and I have no idea what that means. So, I pressed a button on the remote thinking I could go back and change it later. It then asks me to press the Menu button. I do that. Then the Harmony software just goes back to the Add device screen and it's still showing I need to set the device up?????? The Blu ray player is a Panasonic DMP-BDT110 if that matters. Here's aa pic of the remote if that helps. Not sure if the problem relates to the Function button. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41ReQX940cL.jpg wcmartin 12-30-11, 04:51 PM I have six or seven activities set up with TV sound. Looking for most effective, efficient setup without having to set up more activities. Any ideas out there? If you always want to use the receiver for sound, go to each activity and run the setup wizard again. When it asks what device you use to control the volume, tell it your new receiver. If you want activities both with and without the receiver, that would require new activities. You could use the copy function (create similar) and then change the sound to the receiver. wcmartin 12-31-11, 01:07 PM Was sure I seen a heading for copy activity last week within harmony 7.7 software last week. It has an RF button which I have no clue what it does, but has anyone ever added this as a device to there Logitech harmony? I want to know if it is possible to add this to my 880. Otherwise my ultimate goal is to send the a CNTRL+ALT+S to the pc from the logitech to put the pc to sleep, my Rii Mini does this (I think via USB dongle) but I need the Logitech to do it in some sort of sequence command. Does anyone know if this or some other solution is available to get my HTPC to sleep via the harmony? Rii 330 Manual (http://www.loftek.us/download/Rii_touch_330%20manual.pdf) sivartk 01-01-12, 09:09 AM I use a device called "Windows Media Center SE" for my HTPC. Then in the activity that uses my HTPC, I have to add a command after switching to it and after switching away from it. That command is the "PowerToggle" command. So, I select "Watch HTPC" and the PC wakes up. When I power off, or go to another activity, the PC goes to sleep. I had to add a few commands that were not in that list, but my media center remote was used to program the Harmony without issue. korygrandy 01-01-12, 12:37 PM I use a device called "Windows Media Center SE" for my HTPC. The Rii 330 is a bluetooth device. The Harmony (aside from the PS3 adapter) can't handle any bluetooth devices. You'll really only need the IR receiver for media center. I had to program the "*" button just to use for favorite channels (I.e. 24.1) and the "green button" which you can really live without. If you aren't using media center (Windows vista or 7) I would recommend it. The only time I pick up my keyboard is to surf the web. Hulu, TV, Movies, Pictures, Music, etc...never touch the keyboard. As it stands, my 880 is a very functional remote and I haven't found a reason in the 3yrs I've owned it to look for another remote. Give me that reason to go get a Harmony One! I know my cradle acts up sometimes, but it hasnt been an issue to the point where it never charges the remote, and IMO is still fully functional, just sometimes a little glitchy. sivartk 01-04-12, 06:07 PM I am just curious besides the obvious design changes if there are any additional features or bug fixes that differ from the harmony 880. JBaumgart 01-05-12, 12:07 AM I have one of each and actually prefer the 880's layout, but this may be because I've had it longer and use it more (it's in my main system whereas the One is in the bedroom). The two advantages that the One has over the 880 are (a) it looks cooler, and (b) the recharging cradle is vastly superior. One other note: one my One the motion sensor that turns on the backlighting no longer works. Not a big deal - a light touch of the volume (or any other button) will light it up. jcalabria 01-05-12, 10:07 AM I have two 880s and two Ones for some time now. The layout and feel of the One is it's biggest advantage... it is MUCH easier to operate by feel. The 880 buttons all blend together and are tougher to operate without looking. I also find it more difficult to operate the 880 one-handed, particularly the bottom numeric keys are tough to reach with the thumb. The other big plus for the One is the quality of the display... the 880 looks like crap once you've seen both. I do like that the 880 has eight custom buttons per page versus only six for the One, but I see that as the only real plus for the 880. As others have mentioned, the One's cradle is vastly superior and more reliable. As far as features/capabilities, they are essentially identical... the screen and layout are the main differences and, for me, the One is vastly superior on both counts. putox1051 01-05-12, 10:28 AM The 880/880PRO/890 series are the only Harmony remotes that allow you to store individual CD/DVD/SACD titles in memory , then access them at the touch of a button. I have loved the remote but eventually I had charging problems. I called in and waited for close to an hour and a gal finally came on and after I gave her the serial numbers off of my remote and cradle she told me that her records showed that someone had originally bought it at Best Buy in 05. Best Buy must sell returned units to on line sellers. After determining that there would be no replacements I decided to try a fix myself. Well here is how I fixed the problem: The problem with my remote is that the gold plating on the remote and cradle connections wears off and the dark metal underneath is not conductive. I took a soldering iron and with a dab of flux on each pin I put a little ball of solder on each connector, and when I put things back together it's charging like a banshee. Why can't they just say that the problem was in the coating - not the cradle?? biglsar57 Just an update....The thread above was posted in 07 and almost 5 years later this remote is still working and charging fine. If someone knows where the thread related to cleaning/repairing buttons is I'd appreciate it. I have a few that are slow to respond. Thanks oman - I left my blackberry out in the rain and had to take it apart and it had the same aluminum buttons that were taped down. On the blackberry all the buttons were on one piece of adhesive. From the picture in the link you sent it looks like on the harmony some are individual and some are in groups. I'm assuming you just pull those up and loose and clean the inside of the button switch and the contact on the board where it touches to clean them and get them working better. Is that what you did? As old as mine is there is probably left over sweet and sour sauce and who knows what else on the face plate side buttons that need to be cleaned too. Thanks again oman321 01-12-12, 04:20 PM No problem, That's pretty much it. Carefully pealing back the areas you need to get to and clean with some sort of cleaner. My theory is that the glue which holds the little metal discs on the adhered sheet eventually works it's way underneath the metal disc causing the contact between the circuit board and metal disc to be compromised. I had to re-do the volume up (seems to be the worst offender)on my original 880 last year, but it continues to work well. The tough ones are the inner buttons like "ok" or the number 8. Good luck, hope your able to sort it out. If that still doesn't turn it on, go to devices on the Harmony and hit the power button (probably on the screen) to see if any of the codes sent by the Harmony may be a little off. If the "power" on the 880 for a device other than the Denon turns the Denon on the original remote for that device doesn't. I'd try manually learning the power button for the offending device and then re-map that in the Harmony remote. vo328 01-16-12, 12:53 PM Ok here's the equipment I have: DirecTV H20-100 (DTV/CBL) Yamaha RX-V661 (AVR) Panasonic TH-50PZ700U (TV) Denon DVD-2200 (DVD) I have an Activity "Watch TV" set as follows: Device - Status / Actions DirecTV Satellite - DirecTV Satellite is on Panasonic TV - Panasonic TV is on Yamaha AV Receiver - Yamaha AV Receiver is on Other - All other devices are off DirecTV Satellite - DirecTV Satellite is set to "Tuner" Panasonic TV - Panasonic TV is set to "HDMI 1" Yamaha AV Receiver - Yamaha AV Receiver is set to "DTV/CABLE" When I run this Activity without fail the Denon DVD-2200 comes on even though the activity has "All other devices are off" and the Denon isn't even a device listed for this Activity. RobertTX 01-17-12, 11:27 AM Thank you for your suggestions. What I have discovered is that the Denon DVD player is plugged into a "switched" outlet on the back of the Yamaha AVR so that every time I turned on the Yamaha AVR the Denon DVD would come on (it was in a "standby" state so when it got a power signal form the AVR it came on). So I plugged the Denon DVD directly into an outlet and that solved that issue. Now I need to figure out how to make the Yamaha AVR turn on put not come up in the Zone 2 condition. But that is an issue for another forum. Thank you all for your great help. korygrandy 01-31-12, 04:45 PM I added the device Windows Media Center SE to my Harmony *receiver is RC6 IR (and an unpowered hub), which is installed in device manager as eHome . GDN 02-02-12, 12:45 PM Have tried searching this forum - too long to read every post. I've got an 880 which is not never worked well on the motion sensor - I have to tap it a time or two for it to light up, and of course the volume buttons are really bad, but the bigger problem which is mentioned in post 1489 is that the backlighting on the bottom half of the remote doesn't work. I don't see any follow up or resolution to that, but was wondering if I missed it. I've found the directions to opening the remote and cleaning contacts - so I'll try that for the volume, but am still looking for maybe an LED problem or other problem related to the bottom half of the backlighting not working well. Harmony 6xx and 5xx remotes will handle this, but it requires workarounds like Activity start macros or dummy devices. I've heard that the 8xx series supports this directly? Is this true? My 880 has programable buttons and I handle all my problems by including in my device setup all the possibilities for that device.......then when programming the activity I include the device in the sequance of the turn on and add things like changing inputs or special tasks in the advanced programming of that activity. Logitec has most devices already in their database like my Denon AVR which has about 100 codes but a horrible remote. The Harmony does the job.
