Help with two "Watch TV's". I have my 880 set up to watch television and everything is working fine. My question has to do with setting up a second "Watch TV", this time using the tuner output from my receiver (to listen to the radio broadcast of a football game while watching the ESPN video). I know how to make the various settings (I think), but am confused on what icon to use so that I'll know the difference between the two operations. How would you suggest doing it? Thanks!!!

Change the second name to TV w/Amp or some such.

Is there a way to get the favorites to come up right away without any additional button presses?

I don't think you can change the icon but you can rename the activity to something else. I did the same thing for my wife as she wishes to watch hockey in HD (which is in english only) but listen to it in french over the radio.
guitarlp 10-18-06, 08:23 PM guitarlp, it sounds like may have an issue with repeats and delays. There's a sticky at the top of the forum about setting them.
If it's not the repeats/delays, you can try relearning the command from the original remote.
I played around with the settings and it didn't fix or help the problem. I can press certain buttons (channel up, pause, 7) and they will only work once and a while. All the other buttons work just fine. Why would that be? If it truly were a repeat/delay problem wouldn't all of my buttons be having this issue?

I don't think it's got anything to do with settings. I just got a replacement for my 880 (charging problem) and my <new> unit has some button problems. I have problems with the <menu up>, <pause> and <play> buttons (working intermittently). My older unit never had these problems and I just reloaded the same config that hadn't changed for 3 months.

It sounds like you may have a dud...take it back and exchange it.
Also, for your input switching problems, you will probably have to call tech support and get them to modify the input switching routine...they have access to functions not available to us end users
Morningdew 10-19-06, 07:32 AM I would appreciate someone’s help.
I just got a Harmony 880 and went through the set-up. No matter what I do I can not get the remote to control my D* HR20-700. None of the functions work. Power toggle, guide, nothing. The strange thing is that I can’t even the teach the 880 any commands. I go through the software and try to just confirm the commands and it just sits there waiting for a power toggle command. No matter how I press the “Pwr” button on the D* R24 remote or what angle and distance I aim from it won’t do anything.
I’ve deleted the device and activity a few times and set it up again. I always choose D* HR20-700 for the manufacturer and model #. Should I be choosing something else?
Edit: I should add that is says "PVR" input set to Tuner. Is this correct? This is the only choice really.
My other 3 devices (TV, receiver, and DVD) seem to be working (I haven’t fully tested them.).
I’m away from my system and remote but I thought I’d ask here before I call tech support in case I’m missing something simple.
Thanks.

I sounds like the PVR might be set to a different remote "address" than the command set you are getting from the setup. "Confirm IR commands" should fix this.
I assume that when you are learning from the original remote, you are pointing the original remote at the BOTTOM of the Harmony(this is where the learning port is)?
The only other thing I can think of(not being familiar with this PVR at all)...the standard PVR remote is definately IR, and not RF? I know some PVRs use RF remotes as standard, but can be configured for IR...if this is the case this is where the database commands would come from. You would need to change the PVR setup to respond to IR commmands.
Morningdew 10-19-06, 09:24 AM Thanks for the reply.
Yes. pointing at the bottom of the 880. I had to learn a few commands on my AVR and it went smoothly so I'm pointing at the correct end.
The "Confirm IR commands" does nothing, it just sits at the "Power Toggle" screen waiting for a power toggle command.
RF vs. IR is a strong possibilty because like I said it just acts like I don't even have a remote firing commands at it.
I'm assumming I would change the remote to function as IR in the PVR menu? Is this correct?
Also, if anyone else knows. The remote is a R24 (it might be RC24, I don't have it here in front of me) and it came with a D* HR20-700 which was recently installed.
Thanks.
Morningdew 10-19-06, 09:44 AM Update:
czzer, it looks like you're pretty sharp. More research on my remote model # RC24 from D* and sure enough it does both RF and IR and it just depends how the installer sets it up. Knowing the typical installer the box must just default to RF and he didn't change a thing. Hopefully this is the case and I'll make the change tonight when I get home.
Only about 3 hours lost...running up and down stairs trying to get that thing to work.
Now this begs the question. What are the reasons everyone is so pysched about RF capable devices. I realize it eliminates the need for line of sight but isn't line of sight kind of necessary to use a TV remote. I mean if I can change the channel on my TV from another room is this really necessary?
Cranioclast 10-19-06, 10:40 AM I would appreciate someone’s help.

Did you have the original remote set up for RF? Using the original remote, go into setup on the HR20 and set it to IR. You'll have to enter a couple of confirmation codes and then your Harmony should work.
Cheers.
Morningdew 10-19-06, 12:48 PM Uh confirmation codes? What do you mean confirmation codes. As in a series of numbers and letters? Where would I find these confirmation codes?
Thanks.
tokerblue 10-19-06, 01:19 PM The Harmony interface will ask you to send a couple of sample IR commands to confirm it is using the right codes. That's what Cranioclast means by "confirmation codes".
Yakatak 10-19-06, 01:31 PM If I remember correctly...I set up a 2nd "Watch TV" to turn on the TV and use the surround system instead of the tv speakers. The 880 knew I already had a "Watch TV" and automatically named it "Watch TV 2"
How would one go about getting this 30-sec skip and 15-sec. rewind from a Mototorola STB into a Harmony 880? Do you need to first set it up custom in the original remote as described in the Wiki and then send it through via IR to the Harmony?

Once you enter the Moto name and model number, those commands will be in the Harmony database, do you will not have to do anything.
H labels them "Advance" and "Replay", you may want to assign them to convienient keys. I use the /\ \/ keys.
Vincent Kennedy 10-20-06, 01:39 PM Morningdew you asked "What are the reasons everyone is so psyched about RF capable devices?"
I can think of 2 reasons:
1 - Many people with high end Home Theaters have their A/V equipment in another room or closet. Having RF eliminates the need to install and expensive and wire-happy ir repeater system.
2 - My reason - I have a large game room with a flat screen LCD on the wall. The TV needs to be connected to a cable box. I don't want the cable box sitting out in the open so I have it in my A/V rack for my HT. The output is routed through the wall to the TV. I have no line of sight to my Cable Box from that room.
I am sure there are other setups out there that can benefit from RF.
blazeblaze 10-20-06, 02:03 PM Morningdew you asked "What are the reasons everyone is so psyched about RF capable devices?"
Also handy if you're trying to use the remote when both you and the remote are wrapped up in a blanket on the couch.
Or using the satellite receiver with an RF remote to change music channels while in the other room.
Darko2112 10-20-06, 09:11 PM Hi all this is my first post to your forums so go easy on me :-)
I just picked up my second 880 Harmony at BB and I noticed that one of the 3 charging contacts on the remote has a "nipple" on it. I would post a pic but I'm restricted until 5 posts are made. The one I returned which had a non responsive activity button did not have this (all 3 contact were smooth). Is it a new revision or a manufacturing defect ? I called Logitech and the technician didn't know. The remote seems to charge OK but the nipple bothers me. I just would like to know either way what the deal is.
Thanks in Advance...

That don't look right to me...
Darko2112 10-21-06, 10:38 PM Would you exchange it even if it works perfectly ? I'm on the fence right now considering this is the second one.
Maybe not if it was perfect otherwise. I might email tech support with that picture, or link them here and ask what's up with their QC??
NVTanner 10-22-06, 12:33 PM Mine looks different than that. All three of my contacts are smooth and flat. Let the customer service have a look at that picture to replace the remote.
Darko2112 10-22-06, 12:59 PM I think I'm just going to exchange it "again" at Best Buy. I have only had this one for a couple days.
I'm hoping a third time is the charm...
Thanks for the advice
Arutha_conDoin 10-22-06, 01:23 PM I have had my remote now for about 5 months and I went to use it today after I charged it over night (it had gotten pretty low beforehand). Well this morning I went to use Watch TV activitiy and it powers nothing on. Even if I go into each device and hit the power button. I have tried other activities and none of those work. Battery indicator is showing a full charge. I've taken the battery out and reseated it and that has done nothing either.
I also connected it to the PC and checked for updates and nothing there. I looked over my activities and everything is configured right. I'm just confused why nothing is getting the signals at all, or if it is even sending the signal. Any ideas or suggestions I should try?

Try reloading the firmware even if you already have the latest version. Firmware on these remotes is very similar to the BIOS on a computer. If the firmware is corrupted nothing will work. It's worth a shot anyway...goodluck

No such luck on that. I think I'll give Logitech a call tomorrow and see what they have me try. Boy I forgot how crappy it is using 7 different remotes to control things! I may need to find a backup universal remote soon. ;)
Arutha_conDoin 10-23-06, 12:22 PM UPDATE: I just got off of the phone with Logitech Support Lvl 2. They think the IR transmitters are dead, so they are going to have the Warranty department send me a new one. I am going to see if there is any chance I can upgrade to a 890, but I'm not holding my breath on that. So now it is back to juggling 5 remotes for a little bit.
Paul Arnette 10-23-06, 12:47 PM Hi all.
I am having some difficulty using the IR543 with my Harmony 880.
I recently purchased a CinemaQuest Ideal Lume light. I am running an extention cord from it to an X10 Appliance Module set to Unit: 1, House: A. The X10 Applicance Module is plugged into an electrical outlet with no surge protector. The IR543 is plugged into another outlet that has a Monster surge protector.
When I set up my Harmony 880 remote, I chose the Powerhouse IR543AH, because I did not see one for the IR543. The infrared command console is not a IR543AH, just a IR543.
When I attempt to use the All Lights Off command, the CinemaQuest Ideal-Lume turns off, only to turn right back on again.
If anyone could assist me with this frustrating problem, I would be most appreciative.
Thanks.
IronForge 10-23-06, 03:20 PM Just bought a hamony 890. Should be here today. Basically the same as the 880 only has the RF.
Hopefully it is a new revision and does not have the charging base issue.
Currently my setup is:
infocus 4805 projector
bravo D1 dvd player
moxi hdtv dvr
sherwood receiver
plan to maybe add some x10 style lighting.

I have the 890 and it works great. I have not done anything with lighting, let me know how that goes and what you ended up using. I think it will work directly with z-wave.

Stryker412 10-24-06, 06:03 PM I have an issue with my new receiver (Yamaha 5960). I want to setup an activity to listen to XM. I have everything set correct according to the website but the receiver keeps going to the DVR input and not the XM input. Is there anyway to fix this?
michaelk 10-24-06, 09:43 PM Hi- Sorry if this is posted someplace in this monster thread. I read about half way through so far and haven't seen anything yet. I searched the thread and nothign came out at me.
From reading the website it appears the remote is supposed to remember not just power states but also input states. I cant seem to get it to remember input states at all.
I am using it with a panasonic PT50LC13 televeision, a tivo Series3, and a panasonic AV receiver.
The TV bites and has no discrete input codes. So moving from one input to another is a mess. You have to step through a billion things. (allright maye not a billion but can be 10 or 11.)
The remote never remembers what input it is on- if I'm on "watch tivo" activity and select "watch tivo" again it agcully insists on scrollign through all the inputs even though it's on the same one.
They are HALF smart about it and issue a channel command to dump to the tuner so they get to a known input each time. But I need the DVI input on the set which is at the end of the chain of tuner-3 sets of composite/Svid- 4 sets of component- and then 2 RGB before it finally neail the DVI. So it's potentially 10 steps each time (luckily the tv does ignore unused inputs so it's a bit better). So that's great if it gets out of synch or something but everytime it sucks. The tv needs a decent sized delay between inputs so after the power on delay (which is a bunch as it's an RP LCD)- it can take like 8-10 seconds to get to where it needs to go. I have 2 kids and a wife- explaining to them to sit there and hold the remote at the tv for 10 seconds to start it is a loosing battle.
I found a way to fix this a little with some work arounds. There is also a PCinput command which dumps you straight to RGB1. If I make a generic activity with the tivo/ av receiver/ tv. Then tell it to start the TV without picking an input then add on the 3 comands PCINPUT+ nextinput +nextinput And I'm there in like a third of the time.
But it's not perfect (why cant it remember what input it's on?)- and also setting up a generic input ditches the activity icon (not major) but then also kills your ability to set favorite channels for some reason. Facvorites would be really cool- would let me little guys find "their channel" by the logo's just like they do on the tivo now playing list.
I'd like to have my cake and eat it too.
Any advice?
michaelk 10-24-06, 09:44 PM oh and off to finiish reading the other 16 pages! there's some gems hidden in the whole monster for sure...
880 arrived today! Dell has a coupon for $110 off on it.
Anyways, I set it up here at work so it could charge and be ready to play with when I get home.
A few questions (since I am slowly working my way through the thread):
1. How long till the 880 receives a full charge on its initial charge?
2. Can you load the software on two (or more ) PC's and access your account with no issue or is the software locked to one PC (like Quickbooks does!)?
3. Motorola STB and DVR QIP2500-2 does not show up, yet the QIP6416-2 does so it trys to match up some other boxes. Where can I find the Motorola QIP2500-2 codes?
Thanks guys.

1. Generally these batteries need 8 hours/overnight
2. It's tied to your email, multiple PCs are OK
3. Find nearest unit ansd see if it works. You can always teach it some missing commands.
Thanks Joe. I have had it charging here at work since it arrived so it would be ready to set up when I get home.
I did the set up here at work, but just to make the account and list all my devices. Only one of the cable STB was not recognized.
Downloading some icons to set up the channels.

It works this way by design.
If there is a definite way to get to a particular input(even if it isn't a discrete...ie by using the tuner as an"achor" in your case), then it will send the sequence whenever an activity is selected. This makes sure the required input is selected.
If an activity doesn't start properly(eg dog walks in front of TV, so input commands are missed), the first thing most users will do is press the activity button again. With this system, the second press of the same activity will fix the out of synch problem.
If you DON'T want it to work this way, you can go to "Adjust Inputs" for the TV device, and change the way inputs are selected.
You would need to select "One command cycles through inputs", set this command as "InputNext"(or whatever it's called), make sure the list of inputs matches EXACTLY with your TV, and then select "There is no way to go directly to any input".
This will remember your input state, and won't re-send input commands when re-selecting the same activity. It will, however, take a few more steps to get back in synch using "Help" if you get out of synch.
My 880 wouldn't charge properly - it took a fair bit of fiddling to get the remote to sit on the contacts. Apparently as has been detailed in this thread, it's a known problem with earlier versions of the charging station.
Called up Logitech and asked for help. After going through various levels of tech support they decided that a new charge base unit was needed and shipped me one. What's so special about that? I bought my 880 in the US but live in New Zealand. I had lost the receipt. They shipped me the base unit to NZ from Canada and it took 5 days! How is that for customer service?
By way of background the 800 is sold in NZ and there is a toll free number for support which actually connects to the US Logitech tech support line. That also is great plus for them

thanks that's perfect!
I think the idea to anchor is perfect actually- so i get their reasoning, but I'd just rather anchor it to another spot (the rgb via pc input) - so if i do it your way that add my own macro at the beginning of the activity (either anchored to RGB or to the tuner, whatever I prefer) that will fix it up for the best of both worlds!

just a heads up for others- It was set for cylce through the inputs with inputnext as the button to move them. But I guess they do something hidden to overright that with the anchor method.
But Your comments made me did in the control inputs section and I found that i can tell it that I have a way to get to a specific input and then i can set the macros in there myself. So I can set it to channel up then input next to go to the components but for the digital in I can tell it to pcinput and then input next.
thanks for pointing me to the right direction.

As you probably noticed, you can set the "anchor" to any input you like, using the "There is a way to go directly to a particular input" part(sorry, can't remember the actual wording).
You can also make "mini-macros" for any/all inputs by selecting "I go directly to the input I want", then when it asks for the command to go to the input that need a "mini-macro", select "Send more commands". You can enter a string of commands for a particular input this way.
How is the layout of the buttons for DVRs? I don't see the two rocker buttons for Volume and Channels that the Tivo remote and the Direct TV HR20 remotes have.
Is the discrete codes for video input switching bulletproof? I have a Sony 34XBR910.
How is the battery life? Do you really need to charge once a week? AA batteries in my remote last months or well over a year. Is the lithium ion battery user-replaceable?
Is the IR signal strength good? I'm using the HR20 in RF mode so would hate to go back to IR if it means having to point directly at it.

the DVR buttons are alright but it aint tivo. (I prefer the tivo circle myself)- but I'm not familiar with the HR20's transport control placement. Bascially look at the pictures and you can see- your thumb rests on the middle 2 buttons which are 8 second rewind and 30 second skip on tivo - the 2 buttons i mash the most- so you could set those to be the HR20 equivs. those too have ridges so you can feel where they are without lookin. Then if you are righty the play and pause buttons are on the side adjacent to those first 2 so it's a close second to the tivo layout in my book.
Discrete is as bulletproof as your tv is- search here or at remote cetnral and see if your tv has discrete input buttons. If there aren't discrete codes you can create your own discrete macros as described above- typically channel up/down will drop you to a tuner then you can scroll inputs to get where you want to go.
My Panasonic also has a PCinput and startSD command to hit RGB or the SD card slot so I can get to the cycle at either of those points or the tuner by a channel up command. Then use inputnext commands form any of those places to get to whatever input I want.
My sharp aquos doesn't appear to have discrete inputs eitehr (but haven't exhautively searched to confirm yet)- I can channel up to drop to the tuner or there is a card input discrete so I can get to either of those points directly and then use inputnext commands to make a macro for any input i want.
michaelk 10-26-06, 10:50 AM oh and the rockers for volume and channels are right to either side of the direction circle.
OK, I guess I will give it a shot.
Now I hear macros group equipment for an activity.
So what if I have two different D* DVRs on two different inputs, a cable box on another input?
Do you only get one activity for TV watching, one for DVD watching, etc.?
michaelk 10-26-06, 12:03 PM nope- you can have all the activities you want (there is a limit but i think it's like 1024 max or something?) and they can mix and match which components are used.
So you can have one that says "watch DVR1" and it will flip on the tv and turn the input to the first dvr. Then another activity called "watch dvr2" and it will turn the tv on (if necessary- if it's on it will realize that and not touch it) and turn the input to hyour other dvr. THen you could have a third activity for "watch cable" and it will fire up the tv and tune the cable input.
I actually had one that was "watch tivo" and another that was "custom tivo" that both fired up the tv, swuitched my av receiver to tv, and then went to the now playing list of the tivo when i was fiddling with the inputs trying to create input specific macros. So just becasue you use a device in one activity there is nothign to keep you from using it over again and again in other activities.
tokerblue 10-26-06, 11:26 PM The 880 has a max of 255 Activities. Although I can't imagine ever needing even one tenth of that.

I agree... much less being able to find the one activity you want in the list of 255 since there can only be 8 activities on a screen.
It would be nice to be able to create a macros (activities) and assign them to specific soft buttons within an activity though - a sub-activity.

There are rocker buttons on either side, near the center (on the silver portion). If your TV has discrete input selection codes, it is fairly bulletproof. if it takes multiple pushes of a single button there are more likely to be issues. I added HDMI input selection to one of the soft (programmable) buttons since the 880 would occasionally (but rarely) miss it.
I leave mine on the charging cradle most of the time and occasionally when it has been off for a while the battery indicator has shown that it was partially discharged but I haven't had any problems. I doubt you could go a week with it off the cradle, however. The battery is user-replacable, but I don't know how easy it is to find them. There are occasional problems with the connection between the cradle and the remote, but I gather there have been some redesigns in this area (keeping the contacts clean helps).
The IR signal strength seems pretty good. Pointing it in the general direction works and my remote has inadvertently turned the TV on when I had it pointed 90 degrees away while programming it on the computer.

You can (sort of) by having the remote "learn" from one devices remote and assign that command to a custom command for a different piece of equipment. I saw this in an earlier post and used it to get the "guide" button to double function on my DirecTV receiver (I push it once and the receiver thinks I pushed it twice).
Are there any problems navigating the DVR menus with the direction pad?
Tivo is the classical one of course, with the direction and the Select button.
HR20 imitates some of this and you can do most of the actions in the menus with the direction button and the Select.

I think it is easier to use than the RC24 which comes with the DirecTV receivers and nearly as nice as the Tivo remote. I use mine with both a H20 and HDVR2 (Tivo-based). The only real annoyance is that the guide button is just above the 30 second skip (having enabled this on the HDVR2) and it is easy to hit the wrong one.

Set up the device as what it is and there really is no difference. It's a DVR that will also change your channels. Just go with it.

Marcus-
My "E - Enter" button popped off a couple of weeks ago. I scrapped off the glue that was on the back side of the button. Then I add a drop or two of crazy glue and stuck it back on. Haven't had a problem since.

I had my 880 replaced, my only expense was mailing it back to Canada, about $10. I may do it again as the charger is driving me crazy, it doesn't. It was supposed to be the newer one, eh, but the screen is nice!
Call them.
My 676 is still running fine, (in my bed room) and both have all keys intact.
dthibode 10-30-06, 11:39 AM Does anyone else have problems with their 880 charging cradle? I'll set the remote in the charger and later I'll notice it hasn't been charging. Also sometimes when I walk by it I'll hear it beep a few times, like when you first drop it in the charger. The unit clearly isn't making a good connection. Has Logitech made modifications to fix this? If I return it for a replacement will I get something that works better or the same issue? Thanks!

I had similiar problems with the remote charging cradle as well as a problem with the LCD screen turning white at the top. I made a warranty claim and after about a month received a new unit. This one would not charge in the cradle unless I put something on top of it. I found that it charged a bit more reliably in the old cradle so I sent my old remote back with the new cradle. Unfortunately, the new unit tilt sensor would not function even after rebooting per the so called 7.0 software bug so I had to make another claim. This one was relatively painless as I already had email contact from my previous claim. About 10 days later the new remote arrived and works flawlessly.
I have seen claims that Logitech have redesigned the cradle and it did seem different on the new units although one did not function properly.

I had the same problem (6 months old 880) and Logitech sent me a replacement for the whole thing (unit and cradle) 1 month ago. Well, I still have the same problem but just less acute. I have to 'jiggle' the unit on it's cradle in order for it to recharge (just like my old unit before it started getting worse). I'm sure that eventually I'll have to revert to the same 'creative' solutions such as putting some weight on top of the unit or tilting it on the cradle with a piece of cardboard.
It's too bad because the remote is great but there's definitely an engineering problem with the charging system.

You'd think they could just put some nipples on the charging contacts or something to fix it. It's so close, just needs to be pushed down a little to make the connection.

I must be lucky to get both of my 880's without the charging defects others have reported here. I've never had a problem with either one of them - no pressure is required.

It's really weird to see that not everybody experiences the same problem. I just can't figure it out...
My original unit had no problem at all (I could just drop the unit in the cradle and it charged every time). After 2 months I had to start jiggling it in order to make proper contact. Two months later I had to either put some weight on it or tilt it with a cardboard piece and even that didn't work all the time.
My replacement unit came with the 2nd stage problem (need to jiggle it in place). So it will probably get worse with time.
I tried contact rejuvenator solutions but it doesn't work and contacts look very good. Has anybody come up with an alternative way of charging the battery other than using the cradle?

Some of those solutions work better than others. DeOxit (Caig Laboratories) is one of the best. I have used Cramolin, which is an earlier product by Caig (no longer available) for many applications over the past 20 years with excellent results, although I haven't tried it on my 880 yet (I still have my original spray can).
I had a problem a few days ago when I could get it to go into charging mode by pressing down but it would stop as soon as I let up (I suppose a weight would have worked). The contacts all looked good, but I tried scraping the ones on the remote with my fingernail several times and after that it has gone into charging mode every time. I wouldn't try sandpaper or any vigorous scraping since I don't know how durable the gold flashing on the contacts is.
Codeman 11-02-06, 09:09 AM I think that the problem is that the springs used with the 3 contacts are a bit too strong and the weight of the remote can't overcome all 3 consistently to make good contact. This would prevent one of the 3 contacts from making contact. They didn't design with a large enough tolerance band to account for minor variations in parts. Those minor differences are why some folks don't have a problem, some start off okay but develop problems, and some have problems from the very start.
Now that my warranty has expired, I may open the remote up and see if I can cut a loop out of each spring. If it can be done, I expect that to solve the problem.
If I'm successful, I'll be sure to post the results.
I've been using CAIG's DeOxIt and ProGold monthly to keep my contacts clean, but usually put a tube of Daisy BBs on top of the screen to insure good contact. That always works, though I do have to wiggle it around sometimes.
benezrj 11-04-06, 11:57 AM I am interested in buying this remote and have a perhaps, dumb question. Although this remote is designed to be activity-driven (watch TV, watch DVD, etc.), can it be set up to be merely a universal remote? In other words, can I just set each activity button to accurately emulate a particular device ie, replace my receiver remote (keeping all its functionality), same for DVD remote, TV remote, etc.??
Thanks, JEFF
Cynichris 11-04-06, 12:09 PM benezrj,
Absolutley you can. When you set up this remote it will walk you through the process of identfying each of your components. It will then download the remote codes for known devices and put them in the Harmony. The device button on the 880/890 will then be able to dispolay each of your devices and all the controls associated with them.

Have you checked all the Input commands in Device mode? You might already have discretes available there.
If not, have you edited the list of inputs under the "Adjust inputs" option? This is where you can remove the non-existent AIR input.

I had for a short time a Samsung LNS3252D and it was discretely contolled by my Harmony 880. So "most" is operative, but maybe newer sets are more discrete friendly??

You could be correct.
I haven't fooled with one in a year or so. At that point I had came across 2 DLPs that the inputs toggled. I remember it vividly because one was on a Crestron system with a PC on DVI, AVR on Component, and a LAP top on VGA. It was in a boardroom and what a nightmare. We had to program the Crestron to send multiple change input commands to toggle to the correct one. One of the inputs was an "Anchor" input that the TV would default to on power up that we used when the system got out of synk but I don't remember which one it was.
You could probably do the same thing with the Harmony. Just add additional commands to the activity to change input to the correct one. Then if it gets out of synk you revert back to the activity the input defualts to.
Just do a Google search for "Discrete inputs for Samsung" and you will be overwhelmed with articles and threads mentionong "No Discrete input codes". ;) :)
Is there a way to adjust the speed at which commands are initiated? My 880 is very slow in changing channels when punching the number in as well as other performing other commands like FF or FR on the DVR, etc.
That would be the giant sticky thread at the top of this forum :)

theres a thread here about z-wave.
aparently the 890's firmware can work with z-wave now but it has issues- apparently it doesn't play nice with other controlers or something. So if your 890- is the only thing you want to use to turn lights on or off remotely then all is well but if you want to hook it into a larger system then it MIGHT not be ready for primetime.

Do any one know some way to make the remote start programs or issue keystrokes on the mac ? I do have a miglia hdtv remote in addition to the standard apple remote and I'm curious if I can somehow get the harmony to start eyetv if not started already ? And maybe to launch dvd player and open the file dialog ? Also to eject cd/dvd ?
Also any idea why is the mac poweroff (well sleep really) not working ? (hold menu on the mac remote does that)
Lastly, does any one know if the "pairing" of the remote with a specific mac can be achieved ? I had to unpair my mac remote to get the harmony to do something to the mac.

I'd agree completely.
By the time you get done spending for the target, controller, and emmitters for a good system you might as well get an 890 and have one bullet proof integrated system with less points of failure. PLus you get the luxury of not ever having to aim the remote at a target anymore (except probably to hit your tv's on/off).
I have a flat screen in my bedroom with the components in a closet.
I tried the rf converter system that you drop a transmitter in the place of you remotes battery and couildn't get it to work.
Returned that and bought the rabit type ir extender- wouldn't work.
Returned than and bought a channel plus kit with their target, controller, and emitters. Worked better but still not perfrect (target wouldn't always pick up my signals- was gettign interference from my Aqous LCD's backlight.) Got a new speakercraft plasma-proof target. And now it works alright.
I won a harmony 880 and use it on my main AV system and love it so much, I'm goign to throw out all the extender crap and buy an 890 for upstairs.
blackjackmark 11-09-06, 02:27 AM Apologize if this has been asked and answered, but didn't find anything...
WIth this remote, will it jump straight to the desired input on the TV, or does it have to flip through each input til it gets to the right one? In other words, if the TV is currently on Input 1, and the macro that you fire says it should be on input 4...does it tell the TV to go diretly to Input 4, or does it have to tell it "go to 2, go to 3, go to 4"?

You should be able to configure it to go to any input you want. I currently have mine setup under activities to use certain inputs. I have an A2000 and I had a XBR1 for 6 months and it worked pretty well. The software for the remote is pretty good about adding custom buttons and that is how I would do that. How many inputs are you using? I have my set down to 4 inputs both HDMI, 1 Component, and 1 S-video.

- That's highly dependent on your TV. If your TV supports discrete inputs, then the Harmony will jump directly to the correct inputs. What TV do you have?
Cynichris 11-09-06, 10:22 AM I think it may depend on your TV and remote. Some remotes only allow you to rotate through the different settings, some have discreet controls for the inputs. The Harmony will do both, in fact it will ask you which one you currently have.

Harmonys handle Sonys real well. Upto input 7 it's all discrete. It does have trouble with the two RF inputs though, they are not discrete and sometimes messes up. BTW it handles 8 and above as [Input 7, next, (next)] etc.

the harmony is also wise and can make scripts to create quusi discreete codes.
For example My TV has a tuner, 4 components, a couple RGB, and an HDMI.
If I channel up or down it will go to the tuner no matter what. IF I hit the rgb button it will dump to the rgb.
So to get to component 2 I can tell it to channel up, cyle input, cyle input. And no matter what it was on it will get to component 2.
For HDMI I can tell it to RGB, cyle input, cycle input and it will get to HDMI.
It takes a little longer but it gives you something like discrete codes if you prefer that.
Folks,
I have been looking through this thread and may have missed it but does Harmony 880 work with the Bose lifestyle 12 system? I am hearing that the 890 may but was curious if the 880 would as it is available for $150 on amazon.
Thanks in advance.
The 880 can do anything the 890 can. The only difference is that the 890 has a built-in IR-extender capability. This is not the same as a RF remote. I'm pretty sure that the 890 does not have the capability to control devices which use a RF remote (like the Bose Lifestyle 12), however.

UNlike IR (where there are just like 2 slices of bandwidth that use similar pulses) there are many different rf standards.
the rf in the 890 is "z-wave" it can directly control z-wave devices (at least the basic ones). There are light switches, dimmers, etc like the old x-10 blocks. ALso the new sirius conductor home receiver runs on z-wave rf (but i'm not sure if the firmware in the 890 is updated enough to handle the fancier new devices.) Dont know if the bose is z-wave but i dont think so- I think there are only a handfull of devices currently.
It also obvioulsy can communicate with it's bundled nase station IR extender to send commands via rf that the base station converts to IR pulses.
spongeA 11-10-06, 03:23 PM Hey guys a buddy of mine that works at Logi just hooked me up w/an 880 planning on programming this weekend while enjoying some football. No more RC2000 brick of a remote!
Great thread thanks for the info!
LithiumKid 11-10-06, 08:37 PM I'm brand new to this site and I just bought the 880. I love it. I hate the icons for the activities and wish there were a better set somewhere out there.
Other than that minor display issue, the remote is amazing.
I'm looking for some ways to customize the 880. If anybody has any tips, fire them my way if you don't mind.
Cheers.

michaelk 11-11-06, 07:46 PM It's odd that they dont update it so you can load your own graphics.
You can load you own stuff for backgrounds, and for the slide show, and for your favorite channels/media. It seems it could certainly do it- I wonder why they dont bother...
Can anyone help me setup the HD-DVD add on for the 360? I'm not sure what category or the model # for it.
HighdefDoug 11-12-06, 03:10 PM Okay...I'm stuck. Crap. My setup is okay, except......my Sony Receiver remote isn't working and I can't make the freaking harmony do the right receiver commands. This makes it virtually unuseable.
Anyone....can anyone help?
Oh....and is there anyway to set the reciever volume differently by actiivty. In other words, for TV, I like the reciever at 48, for PS2 - 22, for DVD - 42, etc...
Thanks gang....!!!!!
I spilled a bit of cocktail (vodka & diet lemonaid) on my 880 last weekend and now the keys are sticking. Has anyone discovered a way to remove the keypads and clean them? Anyone who has had a similar experience used compressed air?
I learned my lesson; don't drink and surf.
No idea how to clean the unit but I have learnt with kids around you should take precautions - I guess for adults also!
For me that is to wrap the control with kitchen plastic film. It still works fine and resists the kind of accidents you describe :-) I do have to make a small cutout for the base area where the contacts are so I can still charge it but this method works very well.
IronForge 11-12-06, 09:28 PM Hehehe.. that reminds me of the plastic on the sofa thing to keep it new.. hehe :)
As far as cleaning goes.. try a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol might do it.. just a little bit you don't want it soaked.
Is "kitchen plastic film" saran wrap? The keypads are not sticky but sticking. The liquid seeped behind the keypads and when I press certain keys (one of the sticking keys is the 30 sec skip), they stay depressed for a few seconds. I don't have the guts to try and pry off one of the keypads. :(

One thing you DO NOT want to do is pry off a key.
A better way, if you have the nerves and patience:
To fully get the stickness out from under the keys you may have to take the remote apart.
Soak the keypad in achohol to remove the stickiness.
Let it dry and then reassemble.
You may also(carefully) use a Q-tip with achohol on it to remove some.
But , like I said, you don't want to remove the keys, since like laptop keys(if they are), they may have hinges, and once you remove a laptop key(trust me been there), it's VERY hard to get it back.
Hopefully the achohal will desolve the sugar stickiness without damaging any plastic(that's why achohal is recommended).
If anyone else has anothe product for desolving the sugar(that's what was in your drink), without damaging plastic feel free.

I guess it's Saran wrap. Not a brand sold in my neck of the woods so I tried to use a generic term. Cling film is what the Brits would say.
Also if you are really brave you could try WD40 on one of the keys to see if it can displace the sticky liquid. Perhaps try it on a disposable remote first!

Ou8thisSN 11-12-06, 11:20 PM I just bought this remote today. So far its working great but when i was setting up my activities, I told the remote software that when i want to push the volume button, even when i'm in the TV/Cable/DVD player mode, i want it to control the Reciever volume control. Even though I said this, it set the remote volume for each device. I went back in and deleted it manually from each device.
I am wondering can Logitech tech support help me "punch through" the volume and channel controls for the Onkyo reciever and cable box respectively?
I changed the background picture just fine, but is it possible to change the icon pictures to something i want instead of the default?
Other than that, it seems like a great remote so far. I must have that punch through feature though, I really hope either you guys or they can help me set it up.

I would highly recommend that you NOT use WD40, as it is a solvent...and does not play nicely with plastic/rubber. WD40 is great stuff...but this is not the right application for it.

Make sure you get the hang of the difference between Device mode and Activity mode. It sounds like you need to modify the volume buttons in the Activity mode. Usually the setup wizard handles this for you by asking you how you want the volume handled for each activity you setup...but if it didn't for whatever reason, you should be able to dig into the Activity button configuration and change the volume buttons to the Receiver's volume.
Yakatak 11-12-06, 11:35 PM I would think that this is a common problem..but no search luck. I have "Watch TV" set to turn on tv only-using the TV speakers. I have "Watch TV2" set to turn on the TV and the surround sound system. Can I program the 880 to drop the TV speaker volume to "0" when TV2 is selected?

a device mode will only control the component you have selected, an activity will allow you to punch through the volume using another component (eg. receiver)as long as that component is listed in the activity.
I recently went to update one activity and the stupid software decided to remove buttons from all my activities, so if it isn't working correctly for you at the moment it's probably just another bug.
Forget the icons. They've been that way since it was released and since Logitech rarely update the visual elements or GUI you are likely stuck with them. As for the "new" World Cup theme - why they decide that in two years that's the most important new theme we need is a mystery to me.

I would recommend distilled or deionized water on the disassembled keyboard. That was the primary solvent in the drink. Just let it dry thoroughly before reassembling. Compressed air won't remove the sticky, but would help dry the keyboard after the rinsing. Too much compressed air might further disassemble the keyboard!
VisionOn 11-12-06, 11:50 PM I'm looking for some ways to customize the 880. If anybody has any tips, fire them my way if you don't mind.
Cheers.
the only things you can change on the 880 are the background, the slide show and the channel icons. There was a link at the beginning of this thread which linked to some 880 sized channel logos and background colors.
The only other thing you can "customize" is the order of the LCD buttons, but apart hoping the buttons fall were you want them to (the listed button appear in a Z pattern from top left) and the devices are grouped how you would like, that's about it. And right now, the damn thing never arranges the grouped commands in the order it should. I've hated the Logitech software since the 880 was released and it's just as bad now as it was then. It's terrible for customization.
Ou8thisSN 11-13-06, 01:00 AM VisionOn, thanks for your help! I was wondering why it was so irritating that you couldnt easily punch through. I was using the devices command to fiddle with my components and that was irritating. But using the activities button, it works as it should, thanks for the tip!
seems like you're not a huge fan of logitech, is there another brand you'd recommend with similiar features (like a color display) in this price range? Also, is the LCD any different or better in the 890 than the 880?
finally, i have comcast cable, Is there a way to setup a few buttons that will directly go to a certain channel if i so designate it on the LCd screen? for example, can i make button that has the ABC-HD logo, and when i push that button next to the LCd screen, it pushes "2, 3, 1, enter" and tunes my cable box to that channel?

if you set up any activity that includes the TV or cable box you can use the media button to display the channel logo or the channel number. Up to 16 favorites can be entered. When you program the media button online you can enter the channel number you associate with the displayed item.
It's useful for channels that you can never remember but most of the time it's easier to just enter the number manually, rather than press the media button and the look for the channel icon. Especially if it's on the second page.
Most of the time you shouldn't have to use the devices button. Map everything relevant to an activity and it should be on hand. Keep the devices mode just for hard tweaks such as menu setup adjustments that you shouldn't have to change that often.
I like the 880 hardware on the whole but I hate the Harmony software. It's crude and rarely improved. Making one tweak takes multiple clickthroughs, a download with every adjustment, you can't change simple remote specific things like the backlight setting on the remote itself (stupid) and other seemingly obvious things like rearranging the LCD buttons or the order they fall in, is a trial that shouldn't be there after this long on the market.
Given the recent setup hassle I'm thinking of buying a new remote that offers more personalization (the Nevo looks impressive but pricey) but for the price, the 880 is probably the best option with an LCD screen. Although I am interested to see how the Harmon Kardon version works.
michaelk 11-13-06, 11:04 AM ...

couldn't say it better myself.
FYI- if you use Firefox- there's a plug-in at the remotecentral harmony forums that allows you to reorder the buttons easily and also add up to 6 new buttons at a time (as opposed to the 1 that the harmony web page allows).
The fact that someone can make a browser plug-in to do this is almost shameful that their web software cant. I believe the author said it's just 250 lines of code- maybe logitech should offer the guy a consulting gig to fix their junk....
spongeA 11-13-06, 11:10 AM So I set it all up and it works great other than its missing an input for my receiver.
When running the DVD player I use the 6 channel direct audio output into my receiver using the 5.1 decoder out of the DVD player...not ideal but it works for now...but there is no 6-Channel Direct function option as an input on the 880. I am controlling a Marantz SR-870
I figure I need to call Logi and see if they can add that as an input on their website because as I see it I can not create a custom input function and copy it off my Marantz RC 2000?
Any other suggestions?

You should be able to copy it yourself... as long as your regular remote has a button for it.
Hey guys... Just wanted to say thanks for this thread! I finally bought my first universal remote... the 890. I must say, after spending hours with it and reading this thread(almost all of it), I can pretty much get this thing to do anything!!Couple questions though...
1. Where do you guys do most of your programming??? On the software from your computer or on the website? Im having issues using the software because when updating the remote, it freezes up(ive uninstalled and reinstalled and updated it). I think my computer might be blocking it but cant seem to find whats doing it????(popup Blocker or Mcafee). Its also nice to use the website so then I can use the Firefox program(what a life saver). The downside is if I take to much time tweaking something, I get a time out error and it erases anything I just did(lost hours after setting up my receiver options).
2. Cant seem to get my Rite Temp thermostat working with this. I talked to customer support, and they said it might not be able to do that. Strange thing is, when adding it to the activity, it list my exact model as an example? I dont think it would use my thermostat as an example if it couldnt control it?
3. When setting up my soft buttons on my activity screen, are you only allowed 1 page of buttons? I would think you would be able to do a couple pages at least, but when I put in more it deletes them.
4. Was thinking about getting an 880 for the upstairs setup... but then thought, why not just use this for the entire house??? Anyone else doing that?
Thanks!

1. Use the website.
2. Is the thermostat IR or RF? You can only control it if it's IR. If it IS IR, then try learning the commands in RAW
3. You can have as many pages as you want.
4. Either way will work, but having a second remote is easier...especially if you want to use both systems at the same time.

chinadog 11-13-06, 08:20 PM I'm not sure its a cleaner issue here. I think it just doesn't sit right in the cradle. When I first got the unit, I had it (and the cradle) on the the armrest between my Berklines. It seemed like it would beep and charge with every slight moment of the chair. Finally I moved it elsewhere. Based on that, I think the problem was potentially always there. I'll let you know what happens when I get the new cradle.
Bud
New cradle arrived today, the problem was reported on 10/14. Man, slow service. Anyhow, the cradle contacts seem smaller than the original cradle and not sure if the contact with the remote is any better. Seems worse at first glance. I had to make sure it was seated correctly to charge. We'll see how it goes.

Thats the way it is. You can rearange the controls, but its gonna keep the seperate devices together.
Take advantage of the hard buttons as much as you can and delete the unneeded controls out of the activity and save them for your device pages.

Well thanks to your and others on this thread, I was able to adequately set up my 880 today, after playing with it for about 4 hours. I agree that the software is infuriatingly cumbersome but for the most part i got my stuff setup except for two things:
1. when you guys tried to get this remote to "learn" a function not found in the database, was it easy to get the 880 to recognize the command from your master original remote? it took me like 30 button presses to get it to recognize a few buttons, from different remotes even. Now i'm wondering if its me not doing it right, something wrong with the remote itself or because I was interfacing this remote to my laptop which has wifi and the wifi card (although rf) is somehow interfering with the signal transduction, any thoughts?
2. So we have a Comcast HDTV Motorola DCT 5100 cable box and the supplied remote's functions have all but transferred successfully onto the 880. There are two buttons that let you advance the guide by a day either a day forward or a day backward. I was able to map these buttons to one of the available slots in the LCD screen but I could NOT get it to map to the hard FF or Rewind buttons on the remote itself, even though its available as an option.
I tried with my DVD player remote and the only things i can get to work on the Stop, record, rewind, fast forward, skip forward, skip backward, pause keypad is JUST Stop, Play and Pause buttons. Nothing else will work, No matter what I try to map to it.
I tried to map my DVD player search functions to it, but those buttons dont work, neither will they work for the Tape Deck, or anything else.
Am I missing something, or is it supposed to be like that, or can Harmony Tech support help me
smeat2000 11-14-06, 09:19 AM Bottom line guys... Is this remote worth buying or is the charging cradle issue too much of an issue to deal with?
Ou8thisSN 11-14-06, 10:00 AM for me, no, i put it on to charge and it charges everytime (so far anyway, had it a couple of days). It beeps when it makes contact with the cradle and then shows a screensaver, but yeah its not the most intelligent design, but its not awful to get it to charge either.
mgendell 11-14-06, 10:46 AM Bottom line guys... Is this remote worth buying or the is charging cradle issue too much of an issue to deal with?
I bought an 880 last spring and I had some issues with getting it to sit properly in the cradle so that it would charge. It wasn't a big problem (just took a little fiddling with it to make sure it in the right position), and not something that I would find annoying enough to NOT use the remote or to make me regret getting it.
However, Logitech recently replaced the remote because one of the buttons stopped working and the new one charges without ANY problems. I can just plop the remote in the cradle and it starts charging every time with no fiddling or adjusting. I didn't compare the new cradle with the old one, so I can't say for sure that it's a new design, but the new one works much better.
I highly recommend it.

Unfortunately it takes more than a couple of days for the faulty cradle to emerge. So don't report until a couple of months, then say if it's still OK. It'll be good to know a pattern. I got a second one and thought, by the design change, it was better. Then it started mis alligning again. I got a month of warranty left, think I'm complaining one more time.
Holydoc 11-14-06, 12:34 PM Had it over a month now and everything has been working great. It was definitely the best remote I have owned so far.

If you are worried about the charging cradle, have a look at the 720 instead. Basically an 880 in a different skin, but I think the charging system is greatly improved...I haven't heard of a single issue with the 720 charging.

I have tried using the harmony software and on the internet site, no luck, NOTHING will map to those buttons. I dont know why, is this a screwed up remote or a software issue or something i'm doing wrong?
blackjackmark 11-14-06, 08:18 PM Brand-new out of the box, lay it on the charging cradle...nothing happens. Press down firmly..."beep" everything lights up, screen saver starts. Remove pressure from above...."beep", screen saver goes away, quits charging.
Send it back? Got it at Amazon. Or is there a tweak of the cradle that will help it make better contact?
Anyone programmed the harmony 880 to act as the DVICO Fusion HDTV5 USB remote? I used the one logitech shows on their website and it didn't work. Then I manually programmed the keys from the DVICO remote and still no go.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have tried using the harmony software and on the internet site, no luck, NOTHING will map to those buttons. I dont know why, is this a screwed up remote or a software issue or something i'm doing wrong?
I custom mapped those buttons in some of my activities. You may want to check that you have the latest firmware updates for the remote, and make sure you're using the current version of the software.
Ou8thisSN 11-14-06, 09:43 PM all i want to do, is get it to "play" when i push play, rewind where it says to rewind. Nothing fancy. it wont even do that. i called Logitech, and they suggested returning/replacing the remote. So i'll do that.
I have 4 functions that want to use those 8 keys, the VCR, the Tape Deck, the DVD player and the CD player. When i bought this remote, it auto mapped the appropriate functions to correspond with the labels to those buttons but only stop/play will work, no matter what component I'm trying to access. If I map the play/pause/ff/rew to other buttons not in those 8, it works fine, just wont map to those 8. So i've essentially eliminated the software and the actual codes themselves being a problem. It increasingly seems that the remote is the problem.
What I want to know is did any of YOU guys have a problem when you added a DVD player/CD player/Tape/VCR or whatever to your device list and it mapped the navigation features to those 8 buttons? is it truly possible that a remote can have a bad set of buttons but the others work fine? I'd be more conforted if others had an issue like this. I hope replacing the remote will fix this issue becuase otherwise I really like the remote a lot.
Also, in my activities, when I push "listen to CD" it turns on the TV, even though thats not a function that's listed or one that I said it needed to do. I wonder if these are related. Does it matter that i'm updating the remote on my laptop which is USB 1.1 not 2.0? It updates just fine, but I'm just trying to rule out as many possibilities as possible.
here's the picture of the screen of the setup of my button mapping via firefox:
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/5808/mappicgc5.jpg
as you can see from the mapping, i'm not trying to do anything fancy at all. Did everyone here have to custom map those functions to get them to work? seems rediculously complicated for such rudimentary functions. I'm just hoping its a defective remote and thats all and that most of you had an easier time with yours.
blazeblaze 11-14-06, 10:54 PM Ou8thisSN,
It sounds like you got a bad remote...and I believe everything you're trying to do is normal. There have been reports earlier in this thread of key malfunctions.
Holydoc 11-15-06, 01:30 AM I currently have a DVR, DVD, CD player, Ipod, and VHS Player that uses those exact keys with the mapping shown in your graphic. I too think you have a bad remote. Send it back or exchange it.
Grant-Florida 11-15-06, 11:32 AM What glue is recommended to reattach the Harmony 890's IR transmitter to the receiving eye?
Original adhesive on the IR burst no longer holds.
Thanks
Ou8thisSN 11-15-06, 07:48 PM In your Activities section, do you guys use the 880's power management settings? and if so, do they work reliably?
Like i mean, if for "watch TV" does it turn on your tv/amp everytime? I've been having problems with it. Like when i first set it up, i click listen to CD, and it would turn on the CD player, amplifier, AND THE TV. even though it wasnt in the setup or in the menu. I dont know why it did that. Now it will turn on the CD player, and not the Amplifier. Its been screwy. I'm wondering if its endemic to this malfunctioning remote.
What i'm asking is after the initial setup, does this power management feature work flawlessly for most of you or any of you?

For the most part it is working correctly for me. The only glitch is that after it turns my DVD recorder off, it turns it back on again. I can turn it off from the Device menu, however.
VisionOn 11-15-06, 09:29 PM What i'm asking is after the initial setup, does this power management feature work flawlessly for most of you or any of you?
not always but I put it down to the IR beam being fairly narrow and not having the spread to hit all my component receivers. I always map a power toggle to each device just for such occasions.
However, it could be just another 880 quirk in the same way that some days it will go to the correct input on the TV and other days it will just ignore it.
VisionOn 11-15-06, 09:35 PM FYI- if you use Firefox- there's a plug-in at the remotecentral harmony forums that allows you to reorder the buttons easily and also add up to 6 new buttons at a time (as opposed to the 1 that the harmony web page allows).
The fact that someone can make a browser plug-in to do this is almost shameful that their web software cant. I believe the author said it's just 250 lines of code- maybe logitech should offer the guy a consulting gig to fix their junk....
ahhh, nice. That is cool, thanks for pointing it out.
Firefox Mod (http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/mboard/rc-harmony/thread.cgi?4182)
The usual solution to any Harmony problem is "call customer service" which is nice for faults, but I shouldn't have to do it to make tweaks to a button setting. It seems to me they have more CS reps than they do programmers.
If you are having problems with devices sometimes missing power or input commands, the first thing to try is to increase the Inter-Device Delay for the device with the problem. Or if it is not selecting the correct input on power-up, increase the Power On Delay.
Ou8thisSN 11-16-06, 10:33 PM Anyone here have a Motorola DCT-5100 HDTV cable box? or any Motorola Comcast HDTV cable box, if so, what input delay settings are you using? there's some lag between my commands and it being registered on the screen. tokerblue 11-16-06, 11:24 PM There's a sticky at the top of this forum. More than likely, you'll have to adjust the interkey delay and number of repeats.

Try reducing the Inter-Device delay also.
If that doesn't help, reduce the number of repeats as suggested by tokerblue.
You could also try re-learning the commands.

Ou8thisSN 11-17-06, 10:50 PM yeah that happens here too, i believe its a fault of the box, not the remote. becuase i've been playing around with this remote more and more and it seems like its not slow at all, just the box gets overloaded sometimes.
JBaumgart 11-18-06, 12:53 PM I can almost guarantee it's the box - check out the 6412 and 34xx threads and they are loaded with complaints of unresponsive boxes (with the original remote).

the moto boxes need huge delays between devices.
For some reason it seems when moto boxes "see" commands for other devices they decide to veg out for a long time before waking up to look for their own signals.
not sure if that's you issue but somethign to be aware of.
pbmpharmacist 11-19-06, 05:53 PM Well my 880 just stopped charging in the charger. I have an incident number but they are referring me to a 2nd level tech. Is this common to be referred up a level for this?
From what I have read here, it sounds like this is a rather common issue and that I'll receive a new charger. Am I right?
Thanks. Sorry if these are newbie-type questions.

Press device then TV (or whatever it's called on yours) and go through the list you should see many discrete codes for your inputs. The 880 should have already used them when you told it what input your device is on. In the setup make sure you tell it that you change inputs directly, not sequentially.

My Motorola 6412 freezes up occasionally using the original Comcast remote as well (and it seems worse with the latest software update).
As someone pointed out earlier, it's a problem with the device rather than the remote.

Yes, if you notice the front of the 6412 remote LED will light when it receives remote commands... sometimes it will stay lit because it hasn't executed the command yet. Think of it as a remote buffer delay indicator.
Within the last month, I have started seeing a new issue. Sometimes the 6412 will execute a double command... when I'm moving through the menu, and press the "down" command, it will move down 2 cells.
I've had my 890 remote for about 6 months and this just started and I've made no adjustments.

What, exactly, are you trying to do? I have a KDL-46XBR2 and my Activities are mapped to specific inputs as specified during setup. In device mode, there are several pages of "input" commands, but the only ones that work are Video1, Video2, etc. Video9 (PC VGA) is not listed, although I understand there is a discrete code for it. I use HDMI for my PC input, so I don't have Video9 mapped to an activity. Also, if you have the KDL series, have you renamed your unused inputs to "skip"? This will remove them from the list you cycle through.
Gregg
michaelk 11-20-06, 01:54 PM well sometimes, it will cycle through at a great speed. but other times it will just freeze up and not respond. What are your settings?
I control my moto box through my tivo- so the 880 doesn't directly run it- sorry.
But to get the tivo to work it correctly I had to attach the emmitters to the front of the moto box and then use covers on the emmiters to block the moto's IR receiver from getting any other devices IR signals.
Before that- it would react sometimes but not others (certain commands from other devices seem to make it 'freeze'). Once I put the "blinders" on it then it works 100% as it doesn't see the other codes.
I'd try jacking up the interdevice time on the moto box really high and see if that makes it work 100%- if it does then slowly crank it down and you'll find the sweetspot.
remotecentral.com probably would be a good place to search for the specifics you need.
Ou8thisSN 11-20-06, 06:40 PM i posted a thread there, no one answered. I'll try that interdevice thing though.
SeanHockey44 11-20-06, 11:09 PM After reading a good portion of this thread I have become very interested in implementing the Harmony 880 into my setup. I am also interested in the Sony DVP-CX995V 400 disc dvd changer, but I've read that the Disc Explorer software for navigating your dvd's loaded into the player is mediocre at best. Is it possible to load your entire list of 400 dvds onto your Harmony 880 remote, so that you can select a specific movie directly from the remote, thus bypassing the Disc Explorer interface on the CX955V? And if this is possible, can a picture of the dvd cover be associated with each movie on your list, or would the list contain strictly text? Any help would be appreciated!
Ou8thisSN 11-21-06, 12:40 AM i dont think you can do any of that but i could be mistaken.

I know you can upload the movie list to the remote and select the movies via the "Media" button, but I'm not sure about the DVD cover bit...I don't think that's possible.
I have also heard that the Sony disc selection method is a bit awkward, so it can be a bit of a pain to set up.
It might be worth calling Harmony tech support to find out for sure.
SeanHockey44 11-21-06, 01:32 AM Thank you for your responses. I will definitely be purchasing this remote then, as I hear it is an exceptional addition to any setup, and being able to make up for the shortcomings of the Sony changer's software make it a worthwhile purchase.

You would be making a mistake by buying the 880 for something specific if you are unsure it will work.
Especially if you plan to upload imagery and customize the remote. You might find yourself wanting to smash the thing if you have 400 items to enter.
Call tech support first.

Multiple commands to a device would be considered a macro. Harmony calls this an Activity. Maybe you can create a new activity as a work around.
What are you trying to do? Maybe someone has created a work-around.

What are you trying to do?
daphilli224 11-21-06, 02:48 PM I want to set the 880 up to bring up a lower tier display on the LCD after selecting the WatchTV activity that shows favorite channels, but with my own button label text. My wife can never remember the HD channel equivalent to the analog channels she knows well. So I want to label a button (for example) as "4-CBS" but have the cable box set the channel to (for example) "234" which is the HD equivalent.
I could I suppose create my own images for the favorite channels, but the actual channel number will still be displayed, I believe. Creating an activity for each favorite channel is also a possibility. Is there a limit to the number of activities?
Thanks for your opinions.
Dave
Steve_o 11-21-06, 03:04 PM There is an option to turn off the channel # display in your favorite channels list. In fact, I beleive it is off by default.
However, I don't know of a way of including custom text to the buttons without actually making it part of the image.

Why not use the Harmony favorites? There are lots of custom channel logos (ie CBS-HD vs CBS) that have been created for the Harmony. You have the option of displaying your custom logo that you upload to your remote, or the channel number.
go HERE (http://squareworld.com/harmony/) for icons and more info
Steve
daphilli224 11-21-06, 08:38 PM I didn't want to use Harmony favorites because I thought the channel number would be displayed. I was wrong. I downloaded images (Thanks Steve!) and installed them with no problems. The channel numbers are not visible. That tells me if I want a custom button along the lines described in my post, I will need to create images.
By the way, I could not find any option to display or not display the channel number in a favorites button. However, the current display without the channel number is what I want.
I take it the answer to my original question about making a custom button which sends more than one command to a device can not be done.
Thanks to all who helped me with a solution.

As fate would have it, a week after I purchased the remote tru Amazon, Dell has it on sale for ~$120. It's a good deal and I'm tempted to grab another. I love this remote so far. I was curious, how many folks here have more than one?
The only downside I see (so far) is the lack of volume "punch through" for individual devices (I know that it works for 'Activities'). Other than that - It's been a hugely pleasant experience.

Harmony calls this an "activity". Example, my "Watch TV" activity will turn on my pdp, stb and avr. If I decide that I want to watch a dvd, the remote will "remember" which items are on/off and correctly turn my dvd player on, and change the avr to the correct input for my dvd player. Since I run everything through 1 HDMI to the pdp, I don't have to have the remote adjust the pdp.
You can have somthing like 255 diferent "activities" programed. I'm not sure of the number of actions allowed within each activity, but I have never heard of anyone complain that it wouldn't accomodate their needs.

Where does it say that?
jpl3447 11-22-06, 06:20 PM I did this with a Logitech G7 gaming mouse. You write Amazon at Contact Us and explain that a lower price was found and then provide a link. They will check the link and then refund the difference. Their customer service has considerable leeway in doing this. I think I went through the Contact Us link in My Previous Orders page. That way they know the order number and all that.

OK...may have just answered my own question. The software lists this device EIGHT TIMES. Two as an "Echostar" and 6 as "Dish Network"
Under Echostar it lists a VIP-622 and a pvr-622. Tried using the VIP-622 but then the Harmony didn't allow me to "add to Activity" as a PVR.
Then found the device listed under manufacturer "Dish Network" but there are SIX versions listed there:
Dish DVR 622
Dish-622
DVR 622
HD DVR VIP 622
PVR622
ViP622
Which one are you using?
Why would Harmonly list EIGHT different versions of the same thing?
Tried to send this to Harmony's Customer service center through the web-based support link, but was getting an Unable to respond" message
blazeblaze 11-23-06, 11:53 AM blackjackmark,
I think the reason you're seeing so many different names for the device is that users have created their own, using the slightly different labels...and Harmony has added those to the database. I believe that DVR has been out at least 6 months, so at least one of those should work...unless there's a newer hardware revision that you've gotten ahold of. If that were the case, you should be able to learn all the commands yourself and setup a new device, but it sounds like you've had trouble doing that. Hopefully you can get ahold of Harmony support and they can straighten it out for you.
I have a question I have set up my favorite channels in the harmony software with pictures under watch my tv activity but I don't know how to access them from the remote so that I can see them can some one tell me how. I also updated the remote  never mind found out the button it is the media button
AV Land 11-24-06, 07:40 PM I've been waiting several MONTHS to get a replacement charger. It is an absolute joke. Trying to get any customer service out of this company is useless. I'll never buy another Logitech product.
Back in October I called them about a charging problem with the 880 and within 5 minutes they decided to replace the whole unit (they said that the S/N of my charger should be the new style so they would not take any chance and replace the whole thing). It was on my doorstep 1 week later...
Sure can't complain about their service, and actually if you read through this forum you'll see the same kind of story over and over again praising their outstanding service. Have you tried calling them back to see if they forgot you?
I need some serious help. I am trying to get my remote to go to input 8, delay a few seconds, and then use the command for "left" on the remote. I have a sony 40v2500, and while it says 1080p is not supported via the VGA input, it works no problem. The only thing is, you get an error message in the bottom right, which can simply be erased by inputting a command on the TV remote. I figured out how to make the remote use more than one command for the input, but not how to add the delay. If anyone can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated.
blazeblaze 11-25-06, 01:34 AM bsmack,
Maybe this will help if you're trying to do this in an Activity: Go through the Activities wizard again...at the end choose "Yes it's fine, but I want to configure, blah blah blah", click next a few times until you get to "Please review the actions for your Watch Replay TV Activity". At this point you can add commands for devices upon both entering and exiting the Activity. I'm guessing you'll want to add another action to get the delay you're looking for, etc.

I have to agree here. As some of you read earlier in this post, my fast fwd button was falling off. Some suggested super glueing it but I did not want to void the warranty. I sent Logitech and email, they forwarded me to their RMA dept, one email more and the new unit is on it's way. You sure cannot complain about that!
benezrj 11-25-06, 02:28 PM I purchased this remote about a week ago and its great, although I'm still learning. Question: Can the funtions listed on the LCD be reordered for a particular device? For example, I have the Explorer 4200HD (cable box) as a device and when I press the device button, I have 6 pages of functions; I'd like to move some that are on page6 to page 1...can that be done? Also, as an aside, can devices be reordered on the LCD screen as Activities can? I don't see a reorder devices function listed on the website. Thanks - JEFF
FYI for those with charging issues, I got authorized to get my replacement charger but they are on backorder. I get the feeling that my remote will by lying around with a dead battery for a while.
What exactly are the charging issues?
I just purchased an 880. When I sit it in the charger the slide show starts and I see the green bars moving. So I'm assuming it is charging. However, after about 10 seconds everything shuts off. I thought maybe it was still charging and just doing a power save of some sorts. However, when I take the remote off the base it only has one bar. Any help is appreciated. I purchased through Dell so I'm not worried about calling them up and asking for a replacement.

You can re-order the device commands, but not the device list itself.
However, don't bother too much with customizing Device mode, as when the activities are set up properly you should almost never need to select an individual device. Go to Activity->Customize->Change behaviour of buttons, and add all your commonly used commands to your activities.
If you really want to re-order your device commands, go to Device->More Options->Customize device commands. You have to re-type the labels in the order you want them, then select the correct command from the drop down box.

It is normal for the slide show to end after 10-15 secs (display shuts off). It should still be charging. However, if you pick it up after a few hours on the cradle and it still shows 1 bar then you have a charging problem.
r1_rydah 11-26-06, 04:09 AM has anybody had any luck getting the remote to enter 3 digit stations(as channel favorites) with a delphi RoadyXT XM reciever? the remote sends the codes ok, but the timing is way off... example- say I'm trying to enter channel 150, it will catch the 1 ir signal, and tune to channel 1... and then catch the 50 ir signals afterwards, and tune to channel 50... I've set the delays from 0ms all the way up to 2000ms, but no luck
*sidenote* the 2 digit stations tune properly

disregard I had to relearn my 1 button from the original remote, everything is working properly now
Xcessiv 11-26-06, 10:26 AM One weird issue... When pressing on the Media key to display the icons screen and then pressing on Guide which sends the command to my Digital Set Top Box, the digital box doesn't react. I need to press twice on Guide.
This only happens when the Icons screen (Media) is displayed. I tried to relearn the Guide command, no success.

just as an aside- this is one of the MOST annoying things about the harmony website. On one hand it's nice when someone takes the time to set up a new device that it goes in the database for all- but the problem is there is no QC at all. THe database is full of dups and what not. Sometimes the version that they have is riddled with other buttons that some numnut added to the device that dont belond since they didn't understand the concept of actions and put the commands for another device on that device page instead of creating an action with a mixture. If it's one or 2 extra buttons it's no big deal but sometimes there 20-30 stupid bogus buttons mixed in becasue someone wanted a device to be an action....
I realize there are thousands of devices but they could at least browse the database on occasion and try to weed out or combine the duplicates. I'd have to assume there are automated tools for such things that exist in the world...

it's unlikely if it's a newly produced model but make sure the unit's firmware and software is up to date. The 880 didn't always shut off the display in the charger, that was a later fix. Before then it was a sign it wasn't actually charging.
How do I upload the icons of the tv stations that I downloaded.
VisionOn 11-27-06, 08:50 PM How do I upload the icons of the tv stations that I downloaded.
when you click on the "media/favorite channels button setup" (or something like that) on the Harmony homepage you can enter the channel number and upload the graphic to go with it.
the media button setup option is only listed for certain activities - such as those that include a TV.
Just got my 880 today, and have a fairly big concern.
I have a Samsung LCD HDTV/Oppo DVD player/Xbox 360...pretty simple setup.
I've gotten the activities for the Oppo and 360 to work fine, the only thing not working atm is the "Watch TV" activity. I have requested the TV be set to "TV" as the input when watching TV is selected, but for some reason the TV switches to the "HDMI2" input when using the activity.
What is going on with this thing?! My particular TV uses a scrolling input selection if that matters...with a "source" button to scroll through the diff. inputs, or by going to the menu and using arrow keys. No direct input switching.
I have tried the help menu, to no avail. I've also tried the device button when in "Watch TV" and none of the given input selections actually select the TV Tuner (antenna) that allows me the correct input. The only way I can get to the actual tuner is if I use the "TVVIDEO" key on the LCD to scroll through my TV inputs.
Can someone please help?
Thanks

Have you looked at the set-up in your TV? I have a panny, and there is an "on/off HDMI" setting that's propriatory for panny products attached via HDMI.

Have you tried using your number key to select the input when you access the input screen? Sometimes the inputs are mapped to numbers that you can use.

snowmoon 11-28-06, 09:53 AM Can't wait to get mine since it replaces an Easy Zapper.com ( harmony version 1 ) that's been beaten up for the past 5 years.
Word of warning for anyone trying to get a deal from Dell, my order is so royally screwed right now I have no idea how or when I will actually receive my unit. This is after investing 3 hours of time on the phone with customer service/sales. Be forwarned that this holiday season is being rough on them.
My panny tries to shut off the other HDMI device it's attached to, but it's a SONY DVR and it just ends up confusing it terribly.

Mine does the same thing. Since the charger is backordered, I'd probably get another one from Dell if I were you. That's how I'd handle it if I had the option. I'm looking at at least 3 weeks to get another charger.

Select "More Options" for the TV device, then "Adjust Inputs".
Go through the questions, and edit the list of inputs to match what your TV actually has.

I do have a tracking # now and it's slated for delivery on 11/30 despite the fact that were going to upgrade the shipping to next day for the hassle. The online system still shows an estimated shipping date of 12/13 ( delivery 12/18-22 ) though and no charges have shown up on the card I used ( weird ).
I'm so confused.
At least the harmony is easy to understand!

Mine also does the same thing...but it seemed "normal" since it just shut off instead of constantly showing something on the screen. Just seems strange because I had it "charging" all night only to come home today to find it only at two bars...
Anyone know if this is normal?

Seems strange why the Harmony would point the "TV" input to the empty "HDMI2". Before the 880, I would cycle through the inputs with the "source" button--and you are right, it skips all the inputs that has nothing associated with it
I have my Oppo970 connected via the HDMI1 input, which works fantastic with the 880, and my Xbox 360 connected to the Component 1 input, which also works flawlessly.
I will try to add the input of "Air 1" to the input list right now and see if that does the trick. It asks what button corresponds to choosing the input "Air 1"...so from the drop down list I chose "TVVIDEO" since that is the only key on the 880 that allows me to scroll through the inputs. I'm thinking that having a single button that goes directly to the "AIR 1" input is what they are asking for here...
I'll let you know how it goes.
EDIT-- using the method described above, the watch TV activity now points to HDMI1 = my DVD input. Will fiddle some more.
EDIT #2 -- When asked what the key press is to change the input, I used my original sammy remote and used the "Source" button to beam up the signal to the 880. This probably won't work, so I'll just sit tight and wait for some feedback.
EDIT #3 -- Yep, no go. What I have now is that when I perform the "Watch TV" activity, instead of the 880 magically pressing the button that corresponds to the correct input--it presses the button that SCROLLS through my inputs.
Seems strange why the Harmony would point the "TV" input to the empty "HDMI2". Before the 880, I would cycle through the inputs with the "source" button--and you are right, it skips all the inputs that has nothing associated with it
You can set it up to either scroll through all inputs, or directly select each input, but not a combination of both. From your first post I assumed you had it set to scroll through all inputs.
If you tell it you go directly to the input you want, then the command you enter for each input needs to be a discrete for that input, NOT a scroll command.
Does pressing a number button take you to the TV input? If so, you can use that as a discrete.
Otherwise, select "I have 1 button that scrolls through all inputs" and let SMart State keep track of where it's at.

Alright, managed to find the settings tab under the device tab in the harmony software. The advanced setup yields much better information, and gives me the option of telling the 880 that I use a button to scroll through inputs. All is fixed, just had to figure out where to look. This remote is officially perfect for me! Much more powerful device than originally thought...I guess this is perfect for people who don't need to mess with the settings, but also allows the power users to tweek to their hearts content!
Thanks everyone.
I want to set the 880 up to bring up a lower tier display on the LCD after selecting the WatchTV activity that shows favorite channels, but with my own button label text.
Dave
Here is another site (http://www.lyngsat-logo.com/tv/a.html) full of icons including many local channels. You should be able to totally customize the 880. Also a thought if 16 channels isn't enough you can make a second "watch TV" activity and add 16 more. and more. Maybe divide by a theme like Local TV. Sports TV etc.
You may need to edit some of the images so they fill out the Harmony space for an icon. Some have too much color space around the symbol making it too small.

try arranging the LCD to display buttons in any other order than that which Logitech dictates. Then you might change your mind.
