try arranging the LCD to display buttons in any other order than that which Logitech dictates. Then you might change your mind.

Yup, that's an annoying issue! There are some buttons I'd like on the left and right of each other. It takes a lot of back & forth to get them to line up. If they ever do.
It would be great to lock a command to a soft button by position! Wish List!! :D

Mine also does the same thing...but it seemed "normal" since it just shut off instead of constantly showing something on the screen. Just seems strange because I had it "charging" all night only to come home today to find it only at two bars...

Anyone know if this is normal?

I don't think it's normal as it didn't always do this. I'd call Logitech and get in line for the replacement charger.

the Firefox plug in makes that a bit easier now, but the nonsensical way the software decides where to put the devices is infuriating. I've grown to live with device commands being grouped but sometimes I don't want the TV, or the amp commands listed first.

I must have wasted a good hour the other month trying to stop the receiver being listed before the Xbox 360 on the LCD. I was trying to figure out how it decides what order to run them in and then trying to trick it into listing them the way I wanted. But no, those two stupid receiver commands always jumped in first ...

I just got my harmony and am using it with a setup that is mostly computer (HTPC) with MCE driven. I sort of hate the remote. It just doesn't work well with MCE. I do everything through MCE. I got it because my wife complained that you had to use 3 remotes to watch tv (stereo, monitor, MCE remote).

Am I just not getting it? Does this thing work well with MCE and I'm just dumb? Can I return it to logitech?

It's difficult to custom map buttons as my previous remote was RF so I can't make it learn it's keys...also I hate the soft keys, just don't work so well for computer use. Any suggestions?

Is there such as thing as 'volume punch through' on the 880, et al?
I have not scoured the forums enough to find out. But it seems if you are in one mode, say 'Watch TV' regardless of the device you may be on, volume should be able to work the same each time from a single source (ala pre/pro in this case) without having to go back to another device or screen.

If I understand your question properly, this should be automatic if you set up your activities properly. I have a relatively simple system, but I always specify my receiver to control the volume for all activities.

With a Harmony you don't control a single device, you control an ACTIVITY, so a "punch-through" as found on device-based remotes isn't relevent.

When you set up an activity, you tell it which device you use to control the channel changing, which device you use to control the volume, which device you use for transport control etc. for that activity.

You can still select an individual device if you need access to a rarely used command, but for normal use you should never need to leave activity mode.

On my SA8300HD, you have to hit guide twice to actually get to the program guide. Is there any way to get the 880 to send the guide signal twice when I just hit the button once?

I don't think you can do that. If you select the SA8300HD it will (by default) configure the Guide key to be 'single press' (as it should be with that device). If your unit requires a double click then there is something wrong with your STB or your original remote for that device. I have a SA8300HD and it only requires one click.

You can create a custom command for a different device (one that is used for the same activity), learn it from the SA remote and have that command run in addition to the SA guide command when you press the guide button. I saw this on a Directv forum (the newer DTV receivers also require two presses of the guide button). It works for me!

I looked through many of the pages for this problem but can't find it. I'm on my second 880 and neither ones TURN ON ON PICK UP works. The first one doesn't turn on when you pick it up at all. The second one if you hit it a few times, then it turns on. I have the setting enabled. Any ideas?

Ok, thanks. Actually, all I needed to do was think outside the box. When I select PVR under DVR device, to select playback recordings, set timers, etc. the volume does not work. But all the other DVR functions do. However, when in the specific activity (ie; Watch TV) everything works, including volume and all the DVR functions.
The volume is not really necessary when in the PVR subset anyway. So I was struggling with something that I did not even need.
Volume works when it's necessary, when I am watching a program or playback.
"normal use" being the operative term.

You could either set up a "Watch PVR" activity which has all the PVR functions in it(this would probably be mainly the menu functions?), or you could teach the TV volume commands to the PVR device.

it might be suffering from the motion sensor bug if it's using one of the recent updates out of the box.

Check a few pages back for some solutions. Mine is to update the remote without the battery in, to get the sensor working again.

Yes, a PVR activity could prove useful.

LOL Dell sent me two remotes.... They just called and told me that they wanted me to refuse the second package. Then immediatly called back and said keep it and they will remove the charge from my account!

2 for the price of 1 ... at the black friday pricing, that's a deal for ya'

Now I just need to email harmony support to duplicate some remote codes ( almost every other panasonic 60/600/6 has discrete power and inputs except mine... so much for a clean DB ).

My parents (both in their 70s) have the Sammy Slimfit 3081. In order to make life easier we arranged to get them the 880 (they have DVD, DishDVR, VCR, Antenna for OTA HD). The person who has been helping them (they live a good distance from me) can not get the Harmony to switch the inputs. So now he has a switcher hooked up to Component 1 (I think), plus an Antenna connection.

Has anyone else had trouble getting the 880 to switch inputs on the Sammy Slimfit? It will turn everything on and off and run them, but won't do the inputs so everything is going through just the one.

Thanks for your assistance.

FYI, when the 880 is updated and your Tilt/Glow function stops working, you only need to remove the battery wait 5 seconds and reinstall the battery and it will work again. I read this on Logitech's forums.

I have found that sometimes pressing the Glow button a few times will also correct the issue.

Did anyone get the Harmony 880 working with the Panasonic DMR-ES15 DVD recorder? No matter what I try (and I believe I've tried everything in this thread), when I press the Functions button, the Panasonic's menu pops up for exactly as long as I hold down the key; then it disappears again. Thus, I never can actually format a DVD, etc.

I have tried teaching the remote, teaching it raw, all for no avail. Any suggestions?

Any such thing as a sub activity?
Let's say I'm in the Watch TV activity, and want to run another on called "Turn on lights", which does a bunch of X10 stuff. Any way to run it w/i the Watch TV activity?
I want to go back to Watch TV once hte lights are on, but don't want to launch all of the codes again - just back to that screen.

So, I'm about to buy a Harmony 890 RF remote, and my visit to CNet and a perusal of the reviws there has totally made me put the brakes on. Is it THAT bad? Users complained about terrible battery life, tremendous problems with programming and connectivity. If it's so bad, wht about URC products????

Does anyone know how to change the "off" sequence for the 880?

Currently it's in this order:
Outlaw 990
Cable Box
TV

I'd like it to shut the cable box off first.

Thanks,

New to this thread, but long time Harmony owner (659). Got a good deal on the 880, so decided to "upgrade" from my 659.

What's driving my wife and me crazy are:
1) Seems like buttons don't respond the first time you push them. So when pressing channel +/-, or volume, it doesn't respond the first time. Having to double press is annoying. Could be related to #2.
2) Especially with the Sony TV, seems like the remote needs to be pointed directly at the sensor on the TV to get it to respond.

These are relative to the performance of the 659, so I don't think I have unrealistic/unfair expectations. And I had my 659 commands/settings cloned to the 880 under a new ID. I then went in to make sure the 880 was the device of record for that new ID. With the 659 I get good response with the first push of a button, and I can just vaguely point the remote in the general direction of the device and get a response.

Per the sticky I've got all of the delays dropped to as low as I can go.

So, is the 880 designed to behave this differently? Are there other settings I can or should play around with to rectify this? Any other thoughts or ideas?

Thanks!
Rich

I have a new a/v system set up with the various receivers etc (Denon amplifier/tuner, Sony DVD/CD jukebox, Direct TV HD box, and a second Sony amplifier/receiver for outside speakers) all installed behind wood cabinet doors.

I want to get the Harmony 880 and not invest the extra for wireless.

I am told I can install an infrared eye that will allow me to operate the devices with the doors closed. This external eye, I gather, is NOT included in the Harmony 880 package. Where do I go to get this? I don't see any such device on the Logitech site.
thanks,

You should probably take a look at the Harmony 890, which includes the RF wireless component that you are needing. Some folks on this thread have said it is much nicer then getting an 880 and an IR repeater (and in some cases cheaper).

You can't have sub activities.
You can, however, set it up so that if you select the "Lights" activity it won't affect your current activity. You can then re-select the TV activity and all it will do is put the remote back to "Watch TV" mode...ie no power commands will be sent.

I wouldn't listen to CNet reviews too much. Battery life is less than regular remotes because of the colour LCD screen...that's why it's rechargeable. You should get about 5 days out of a charge, but most people just put it on the charger when they retire for the evening, so it's always fully charged.

Programming is generally very easy, certainly MUCH easier than with URC remotes, but there are tricks and traps which you might need help with...either from here or tech support(which is top notch).
They are definately superior remotes to URC products.

So I've been setting up my remote for the last few hours. I have it pretty well dialed in but I'm very discouraged by something. Wondering if anyone has a work-around. Why doesn't each activity have "exclusive" button setup? What I mean is I have directional buttons set up in my "Watch TV" activity to control my DVR Menu. When I set up directional buttons to control my amp in the "Play Xbox" activity it also activates them in the "Watch TV" activity. Is this a bug or is this normal? Otherwise I'm really diggin this remote. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Christopher

- Are you asking about what button I mapped it to? I mapped it to the + key at the bottom of the number pad simply because I access it to go to local subchannels. I also mapped it above the fast forward button because I use it as the "30 second skip".

If you haven't enabled the 30 second skip, you really should. At any screen, enter this key sequence.

So much for the Harmony 890. I don't care how great the product might be. In order to achieve the seemingly simple task of logging on to their site to set up a new account, I had to disable all my virus software, disable any and all firewalls within McAfee and Windows. I had to disable all pop-up blockers. I had to disable spyware. I had to TRY to disable firewall on my LinkSys router. When none of this worked (despite Logitech promises to the contrary), I decided to go straight from my cable modem to my PC. NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!! I could not even login to their site to get a username!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The rest of the computer and internet world lets me download ANYTHING without such problems. It goes back to the store tomorrow for a full refund!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've not had any problem with my 890 or updating it. At first I used my PC which has ZoneAlarm suite with no problem. Now that the RF receiver is in place, I now use my work laptop with black ice and whatever else it has. Both of these go through a linksys router (the laptop is wireless), and work great.

Amazon respondesd, said they can't honor rebates if the item was bought outside the rebate period...but "due to the circumstances surrounding your order" they would simply give me a $30 credit back onto my charge card!

That's a LOT better than I'd hoped. Now I don't have to fill the rebate out and wait for it!

Same here - Linksys router but desktop. I have McAfee, Windows Defender, a pop-up blocker, and whatever IE7 has built into it, and have not had problems accessing the site and downloading updates. I have on occasion found the site tempermental and slow, and I'm guessing that's due to very heavy usage at those times.

Received the Harmony 880 on Saturday and set it up for my RCA F38310 HDTV, Harman Kardon AVR-7200 Receiver, Denon DVD-2900 DVD Player and Helios H4000 DVD Player.

So far I must say that this is the worst (crap) remote I ever owned and here is why:

1) The buttons are small and requires a firm pressure for a reaction.
2) It is very easy while trying to access buttons near the upper middle to also press the adjacent button.
3) I have to press the Mute button VERY HARD for a about two seconds before it mutes my receiver.
4) In the web setup (actions) I specified that the volume should be controlled by my AVR for both my DVD players, however both on both actions the volume does NOT work!
5) The web setup recognized the Helios H4000 DVD player, however all normal functions did NOT work! I had to teach the remote how to Play, Pause, Rewind, Forward, Previous, Next and more!
6) I saved the most annoying for last - Whenever I press and action button involving my TV, the freaking remote toggles through inputs (channel) slowly to usually the WRONG input, instead of going directly to the right input eg. Tuner or Component. Plus when it then FINALLY picks the WRONG input I press help on the remote and go through the prompts to get the correct input. Now one should think that the remote now has "learned" which input is right yes? Nope because I have to go through the help next time I use same action when it selects the WRONG input!!!

I am going to call Logitech this afternoon when getting off work to see if they can solve my problems, if not this so far crappy remote is going back!

Wishlist to Logitech:
1) Touch display
2) Learning from and sending to RF remotes
3) Allow organizing (moving) functions for each device, so one can move the most used functions to first page instead of having to scroll to page 4 out of 8

This is a large thread... I hope nobody's asked this one before... I did do a search but did not come up with a specific answer so....

I am thinking about switching from a "Universal Remote MX 700" control to a Harmony 880.

My big issue is finding the "discrete codes" that are buried in the Samsung remote -- i.e. the ones that select the video input -- and importing them into a universal remote like the Harmony.

I have found the programming for MX-700 to be rather tedious and confusing, particularly when it comes to importing these discrete codes. The discrete codes are in a file separate from the rest of the codes for the Samsung remote. I have to import them, transmit them into another device, and then transmit them back into the MX-700.

So, a couple of questions re: the Harmony:

Can anybody tell me if Logitech's device database includes the "discrete codes" for the Samsung display?

Is it possible to install the software and explore the database before the remote has been purchased and installed, or is it only possible to get into the database if you've got the remote?

Those are the main questions.... TIA for any response...

Try using the software on the www.logitech.com WEB site.

The software on the CD that came with my Harmony 890 would not even install on my PC so tech support suggested that I go to the WEB site.

I established my account and completed the initial configuration of the 890 with no problems using the WEB site.

I have since downloaded a new version of the software that will work on my PC, but I still prefer the WEB site when I want to tweak my settings.

I've already downloaded the software from the Logitech website, but I haven't installed it yet, so I'm still wondering: do I have to own the Harmony, and have it attached to my computer, before I will be able to explore the software and see if it will meet my particular needs??

Or will the software let me rummage around in their database before I've even bought the device?

Or will the software let me rummage around in their database before I've even bought the device?

--PS

My remeberance is, you can't really see the "nitty-gritty" of setup 'til you hook up the remote to eh PC...but give it a try and see if I'm wrong!

I called Amazon and I was told that AMEX is a credit card company so if you apply for a credit card through them then you will get a discount/coupon for buying product/s at Amazon. I have not looked into AMEX yet…………

3) Allow organizing (moving) functions for each device, so one can move the most used functions to first page instead of having to scroll to page 4 out of 8

few things-

1) check the inter and intra device delay settings- search here to find the info- that MIGHT speed up you mute button.

2) if it isn't that it sounds like you have a bad unit.

30 if one fixed the speed issue and you have no problem then your #6 is easy to fix if your tv has discrete input codes- just search.

wishlist items-
1) I had a touch display remote- I prefer buttons that i can feel my way around. I had a home theater master with a touch screen- it's very cool but a pain in the but that you have to look at the screen all the time to find the button you want.
2) RF remotes have NO standards- it's essentially impossible to make an RF universal remote. THe closest thing to a universal standard is z-wave which is the protocol and frequency that the 890 uses so if z-wave ever catches on mainstream then the 890- might be the way to go. RIght now I believe only consumer electronic that uses z-wave for their remote is a sirius tuner- and all manner of light switches and wall worts to turn on/off lamps and appliances like the old x-10 system). But for the record currently harmony is IDIOTIC with their z-wave support and basically only uses z-wave to talk to the base unit and perhaps add a small handful of z-wave light switches. They don't currently work well with others as far as z-wave is concerned.) Updating the z-wave code in the thing is my number one wish list item.
3)- do you mean moving the soft buttons on the screen? Then you can do that right now- their website is totally unfriendly to do it but you can. There's a firefox plug in floating around to use firefox todo it easily. You cant move the device buttons on the main device screen though. Thats a common complaint.

Open your mind and read a little-(best would be to read this whole thread but that's tough with all the posts- but at least search this thread for your issues) this remote might do exactly what you want. Logitechs website and documentation just stink. Experiment, you might be pleasantly surprised.

- Any of the Harmony remotes will control the Xbox 360. The only difference is that the Harmony 360 has color coded buttons. You can map those buttons to the LCD screen of the other remotes if you like those remotes better.

Hello everyone, first time poster here. I posted the following on the remote-central board and haven't had a response yet, the issue is gnawing at me and any insight is appreciated:

message posted on remotecentral:
Hi all, this is a great resource and I’ve been a long-time lurker. I finally bought a harmony 880 and am loving it, but I am having one challenge. I guess the situation is somewhat complex so if you will indulge some details, I would appreciate if someone can help me come up with a solution!

I have two Sony CD Jukeboxes daisy-chained together through Sony’s Control A1II system. I also have a Sony tape player because I enjoy making mix tapes to listen to in the car (yeah yeah yeah). The three machines are hooked up together and going through an Onkyo receiver via RCA red/white cables.

To listen to CDs, I have two separate activities set up depending on whether I want to listen to CD1 or CD2, this way I’m be able to use the harmony to control either player (I have a separate activity for Tape). The activities are set up:

Activity: Play CD1. Devices associated: CD1, AV Receiver.
Activity: Play CD2. Devices associated: CD1, CD2, AV Receiver.

CD1 has to be associated with the second activity because the signal is going from CD2 through CD1 into the receiver, if CD1 is off then no signal is transmitted to the amp from CD2.

Since CD2 is a “slave” to the CD1 “master,” the following is currently happening when I select the Play CD2 activity:

The Harmony turns on CD2, the amp, and CD1. Thanks to the Control A1II master/slave setup, CD1 then goes to power on CD2, but because it is already on, it ends up powering it off.

I tried removing the Control A1II connection between CD1 and CD2, and while that solved the power-on problem, now I have no sound coming from CD2 because of the way it is hooked up to the amp!

Is there any way I can have CD1, CD2, and the tape player all hooked up together to the amp, and not run into the power-on/off problem?

I hope this is clear, please let me know if you need more detail. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

coscos

I think the problem is that you have 2 devices that use the same on/off or toggle code. Do the Sony CD players have the ability to set a unique id for each cd player? I have an Onkyo receiver and you can chnage it's id so that you can independently control multiple onkyo components.

I am a fairly new 880 owner and have "played" enough with it to customize a few things and implement some of my TV's buttons. One of those is the SLEEP button. The button itself works, but when the TV shuts off via the sleep mode, the remote does not know the TV is off. The next morning the activities do not work because the remote thinks the TV is still on. The manual fix is to use the OFF button first in the morning, but automating this sounds better.

--PS

P.S. This link at in the opening post does not seem to be operative:

Logitech Forum: http://forums.logitech.com/index.html?l=EN&c=CAN
"Programming" the Harmony is VERY different than programming the MX series. Basically, you tell the Harmony what devices you have and it defaults to several modes like "Play TV", "Play DVD", "Listen to CD", etc. You can't get into it and see the individual instructions. This often frustrates people who are used to more traditional universal remotes.

While I'm pretty sure that it will have the discreet codes for your Sammy, it doesn't really matter, as the Harmony keeps track of whether your Sammy is supposed to be On or Off, and there is a little "device wizard" (I think it is called) that will ask you "Did everything turn off as you expected?"

And yes, you can go through the tutorial and select the devices you have and it will tell you whether they are in its (massive) database of equipment.

Hope this helps

I have two activities set up (i.e. Watch Cable Box and Watch ReplayTV). If I am one Watch Cable and then hit the Watch Replay activity, it will turn off the TV before switching on the Replay.

So I currently have to hit the OFF button and then select the new activity.

I had it working before, but I got some new components and thought it would be easier just to restart from scratch since I understood some of the short comings to how I had the IR mapped previously. My mistake.

Has anyone had a similar issue?

nithos,

I have a Replay TV...and I do not have this issue. I can switch between activities without any device power toggle issues. You might want to try deleting the "Watch ReplayTV" activity and create it again. I believe I did have to adjust the repeats/delays for it to get it working perfectly though...but it's been awhile, so I don't remember the details. I'm not sure repeat/delay issues would be causing your problem though.

I never had a problem controlling the two Sony jukeboxes before with the same remote, I assume it's cuz they had their own unique IDs (they have a 1-2-3 switch, CD1 is 1 and CD2 is 3 on both the machines themselves as well as their remotes). The problem was that damn control A1II thing that just HAD to turn on CD2 as soon as CD1 came on!

I solved the issue last night after more tweaking of the 880. I basically had to set it up to send some powertoggle commands both at poweron and poweroff. I lost a few hairs but now it works exactly the way it should ;)

A few of the buttons on my harmony started sticking. No spills or anything. Anyone else have this problem?

Sparky32
12-08-06, 09:23 AM
I just recieved my 880. My buttons don't stick but sometimes you have to press harder than the "click". I've noticed on a two (maybe more) of my buttons the "click" occurs before the button is actuated. The user feedback that the event has occurred is the"click". However, the event never actually occurs.

The most annoying part is that it's the play button. So the scenario is that I am fast forwarding through a commercial on my DVR and then I "click" play and the DVR doesn't respond. Then I have to push it again hard and it begins to play. (Then I have to hit rewind and find the start of the show again).

I can simulate the issue with the "Glow" button. If I turn off the screen on the remote, pressing the play button hard will cause it to "wake up" and illuminate. However, with just a light touch and going to click 100% of the time I can click that button and get the remote not to respond.

I rely on the feedback of the click to know how hard to push on the remote.

I am posting to the forum to find out:

Is typical behavior that I need to get used to?
Do I have a defective unit?

from what I remember you need to go into the web site preferences (where ever that is - I can never find it when I need to) and tell the remote to leave components switched on if they are used in the next activity. That might solve it, if not it could be a bug.

Sounds like you have a bad button. I have the same problem with the "Device" button on mine. I have to press it really hard to access device mode, but I so rarely use this button that I decided not to replace the remote. In your case I would not hesitate in getting a replacement.

Hello!

I've run into the following problem with my Akai PDP5006H TV. The Harmony wants to change the input source on the Akai by activating the input source menu, and then issuing a number of "NextInput" commands to cycle from the presently selected source input to the source input required by the newly selected activity.

The problem is that when the input source menu is activated, the selection cursor starts at the top of the menu, not at the currently selected source. To make matters worse, the presently selected input is greyed out, and the "NextInput" command skips over the presently selected input if it happens to be on the way to the desired input source.

The original remote doesn't have keys to directly select the input source. It has to be done by activating the source menu and using the up or down arrow keys to scroll to the desired input. The dropdown boxes in the Harmony setup screens seem to have some commands to directly select the input source, but the TV appears to ignore those commands, or perhaps I'm not issuing the right sequence of commands to directly select the input source.

Any suggestions on how to get around this? Thanks in advance for any help!

Unless they've changed since last year, and I don't think they have, what you describe does not seem normal. When placed in the base and seated properly, mine makes a brief beep and then goes into a slide show for about 10 seconds, after which the screen goes dark. I have never had a problem with either of the 880's that I own, in terms of charging or general operation, and they both operate like this.

Sorry if this is a repost, but I tried searching this thread.

I have a Bell Express Vu 9200 and I'm trying to turn on Tuner 2. The 880 only wants to turn on Tuner 1 and won't learn the remote power button for Tuner 2. I can't be the first person to have this problem. Harmony is working on it.

Is it because Tuner 2 only works with UHF?

Any solutions?

Early models with old firmware (or software - one of the two) do not switch off when charging. The LCD runs through the slide show constantly.

The "on base station" must be a recent thing because I've never seen that on my unit, but I haven't updated it in a few weeks so maybe it's a an update.

The beeping and flickering thing started happening to me the other night and the end result was the unit did not charge. I assume this was another issue with the poor cradle design since it was a bitch to sit properly on the contacts that night. Take the unit off, and put back on again and make sure the battery icon is moving to indicate the charge.

Mine (actually an 890) did that too at first.

After the first round of programming (which I think included a firmware update,) it shows the "screen saver" for a short while and then goes dark.

Thanks. I tried to put it on the cradle after my first round of programming. Now the remote goes Glows and goes into the slideshow and the backlights switches off after brief moment. You were probably correct. I think it updated the firmware during the first round of programming. Second time I put the remote on cradle, it looks better now.

I have a prob with the 880 and dish network receivers...I saw someone else posted but i did not find an answer. Everything works great but when i program my locals, with dish you need to type 024-1 for hd local channel 24. The harmony seems to drop the zero (least significant digit) when programming favorite channels. So i built 0241 in the fav channel program with an icon...but the remote when i use it sends 241 which is nothing for me and goes to channel 239 (WGN).

So is there a way to send that zero for it to work with local channels?

Thanks for all your help

I have a prob with the 880 and dish network receivers...I saw someone else posted but i did not find an answer. Everything works great but when i program my locals, with dish you need to type 024-1 for hd local channel 24. The harmony seems to drop the zero (least significant digit) when programming favorite channels. So i built 0241 in the fav channel program with an icon...but the remote when i use it sends 241 which is nothing for me and goes to channel 239 (WGN).

So is there a way to send that zero for it to work with local channels?

Thanks for all your help

Your talking about OTA locals I assume.
Never found a solution for it.
I just program in the SD locals and then channel up one.

Could anyone please comment on the ease of use of the 880 when operating an HR10-250 Tivo HR 20 or Tivos in general. It is not clear to me where the most common Tivo buttons will always be located (other than those accessed manually in a device menu) when the 880 is programmed

I use the Tivo transport functions more than any other controls. After researching several threads the 880 looks very good but I am wondering if I would be better off to have the more Tivo oriented layout of the 670 -- than the color LCD and Battery charger features of the the 880

Thanks

you can map all the tivo transport buttons to the hard transport buttons on the remote. Any others you access frequently that won't fit on the hard buttons can be mapped to the LCD display. You have 8 positions to drop them in and those will be displayed when you switch to the activity. Any remaining can be mapped to other pages on the LCD.

KT you'll be very happy with this remote. Even though my charger isn't working properly, I'm still happy (I'm getting a new one next week). Just remember to use the 70 XBR2 setting when you set up your system. The 60 wasn't in the database when I set mine up.

I found this on Harmony's support site. I haven't had a chance to try it myself, so I can't verify that it works yet, but I will post my findings tomorrow:

Detailed Description
How do I add Digital Channels?

Answer
To change to a digital channel of the format X-XX or X.XX:

1. The remote needs to learn the "-" or "." command from your original remote. Click Devices next to your channel-tuning device and then click Learn infrared commands. This will display a page of commands.
2. Scroll down to the Learn a New Command field and enter "-" or ".".
3. Click Learn New Command and follow the instructions to teach the new command. Once the command is learned, you will be returned to the list of all commands. Click Done to return to your home page.
4. Click Activities and select the watch television type activity.
5. Select Set Up Favorite Channels and click Next.
6. Enter the channel numbers (example: 3-10).
7. Click Save when finished.
8. Update the remote.

I got the 880 2 weeks ago to replace a home theater master mx 800 and it is an amazing remote. If you actually take some time and learn the advanced programing it is even better. I have been tweaking it over the last 2 weeks every night and I think I just about have it perfect. Great addition to my theater!

Thanks Ckramer but i have read that info but it doesnt apply to the 942. It already populates the "-" for the local ota. The 880 doesnt have to learn it. What you do need though is the harmony to output just raw numbers like 0241. The dish sees the 024 and populates the "-" and the 1 then selects the local ota instead of 024-0 for sat local. The 880 just will not send the first zero. it sends the 241.

I have no prob with the "-" and understand that feature because my other TV has a local receiver built in and need to learn the "-". I think its a harmony software feature but not for sure.

Hello,

I have a Samsung HLS6187W tv that I need to access the service menu on. I've read that this remote can access the service menu if I set the next model up as the device. However, what I'm not sure of is the fact that when I access my service menu, it resets all of my user picture settings to factory defaults. Therefore, I need a remote that can 1) access the service menu, 2) go through the service menu and set overscan to off (this setting resets on power off), 3) exit the service menu, and 4) go through each input and set my picture settings for each (brightness/contrast/etc) back to their previous values. Is this remote up to the task? Thanks!

Is Logitech down for everyone else? Just got my brand new 880, charged it last night, but I'm getting nothing but errors when I try and set up a new account today. It keeps saying down for maintenance for the last few hours.

I'm also thinking I got one of the blown out video models. My contrast is horrible in the little demo, and it's like there's an overlap in the screens, the previous screen takes several seconds to fade out, you can see remnants of it while looking at the next screen.

These may be repeat questions, but I didn't find them within the 46 pages of this thread.

1. Is there a way to get the date to display on the LCD. I noticed that you have to set the month and day in the time setup, but no where can I find any reason for this.

2. Does anyone else have the problem of periodically updating their remote and then finding it to change fonts, device arrangement, naming convention, etc? Is this an update to the site? Is there any way to prevent this?

3. Does anyone know how the naming convention even works? Any suggestions on what I can use for "Watch Media Center". It keeps cutting off words.

there is no reason for it. My theory is that it was originally put there to enable the advertised "TV listings on remote" feature, before they realised they couldn't actually do it and then dropped all mention of it.

To answer my own question, the new base has not solved my charging problem. I have done everything, including cleaning the remote contacts. The only thing that works is to lay something heavy on the remote, which makes me very nervous.

EDIT: I called Logitech again. Apparently you have a bum base if the middle gold contact of the charging base is lower than the 2 on the sides. Apparently I'm getting yet another base and I'm going to be really angry if this one isn't ok!

I appreciate the empathy. Overall, I'm fairly happy with Logitech despite all of this b.s. Their support team is very professional.

Anyway, mine worked flawlessly for about 4 months... then I started having issues. Mine also beeps and then I see the picture of the remote. Then the picture goes away and I come back many hours later and it hasn't charged.

There should be a simple fix for my problem:

I'm using a 65" HP TV, HK 635, D* HD 10-250, xbox 360, and Toshiba HD-A1.

The problem is with the HP - using Activities, it seems as though it doesn't know the state of inputs and sometimes power status. For example: After watching a DVD, I hit the "Watch Tivo" command, which should change the input from HDMI1 to Component1. It never does this right - the DVD player is turned off, and the AVR-635 is switched to the proper input, but the HP TV is not put back to component1. It knows the proper codes for it, because the help system will put it correct after the "Is the TV on Component1?" question... and I can manually select the Component1 button from Devices. In the config software, it shows switching the TV to Component1 as a step in the "Watch Tivo" command.

What am I missing?

PlayDoh, sounds like you need to tweak the delays on the TV so that it doesn't get confused. I would start with the input delay and then try the device delay and last the inter key delay.

I wrote up some of my impressions on my recent move to the 880 on my blog.

What you do need though is the harmony to output just raw numbers like 0241. The dish sees the 024 and populates the "-" and the 1 then selects the local ota instead of 024-0 for sat local. I have no prob with the "-" and understand that feature because my other TV has a local receiver built in and need to learn the "-". I think its a harmony software feature but not for sure.

Yep, same problem here with local DTV on my ViP 622. If I want to watch 36-01 I have to put in 0-3-6-0-1 (or 0-3-6-1-select) and with the 880 dropping the first 0, the DVR switches to channel 360.

Of course this wouldn't be a problem for me if Dish would add my HD locals already. ;)

I left feedback of this problem at the Logitech site.

ETA: Bingo! Took the Dish delivered locals off the guide by going into Menu > System Setup (6) > Local Channels (9) > Sat Locals > Disable.

Then, I went into the Harmony software and set my favorite DTV channels to simply 36. After that, I set the way the channel changes in the troubleshooting section to "Number(s) and then enter (or select)."

So now the remote goes 3-6-select and goes straight to 36-01! If I want to watch the local channels via Dish, they're still in the 9000 range, though OTA DTV looks 10x better than SD. :)

I agree with snowmoon in that it is most likely a delay problem, however I would start with increasing the Inter Device Delay.

I don't think any remote is up to that task! You are talking dozens of remote signal that all have to be coordinated in order to prevent disaster! There is no way for you to leave overscan on or off for a particular input?

I bought a 880 about a month ago and set it up to work with my home theatre equipment. It worked perfectly till I bought a PS3 on Friday. Now the 880 no longer works with my JVC receiver. The only thing that has changed is that now I have the PS3 sitting in the same rack as the components. And secondly, to fit the PS3, I had to reduce the amount of space my receiver had (it does have less air for ventilation). Could the extra heat from PS3 and less ventilation air for the receiver be causing some kind of interference? Any help will be appreciated.

The simplest issue might be, with the shuffling of your components around, is the infrared receiver on the JVC now blocked?

I have searched for Westinghouse's discrete codes for the LVM-42W2's individual input modes, but have found a number of assertions that they do not exist. Anyone out there using this remote with the same Westy model? If so, how does the Harmony 880 deal with switching input devices on the softkeys without discrete codes? Also, if any of the information that I am operating on is incorrect, I'd be most happy to have any knowledge gaps closed regarding this. I love my Westy HDTV and the rest of my home theater setup.... No the IR receiver on the JVC is not blocked. The components are all stacked on shelves inside a TV stand, the order from lowest to highest being:

2. JVC Receiver

I use this remote with my LVM-42w2. They have the monitor setup in their database. The recent update fixes some of the problems I was having with selecting the correct inputs, since the Westy kinda mixes discrete and non-discrete codes for its inputs. The problems I now have, though, are that many times the TV doesn't respond to the remote, and I have to reissue the commands, and that their default configuration caused the hard directional buttons to stop working (the latter is easily fixed by manually assigning the correct functions to those buttons). Overall, however, I have been very pleased with the 880, as has my wife, who is not much for gadgets.

Nope, a limitation of the TV Firmware right now. The overscan setting reverts on each power cycle. I obviously wouldn't automate the turning overscan off, that is very dangerous. What I'd like to do though is have the remote switch to each input and set the color settings. Does the 880 support stuff like do x command, wait y seconds, do z command, etc? Or is timing totally driven by what Logitech dictates?

Seems I get to be one of the lucky ones having problems getting the device to charge. So after a wasted phone call to Logitech only to have all the same questions/information requested in an email 2 days later I am now on there list to receive a new charging base station. According to the email I just got they are on backorder and it will be a couple weeks until a new base station ships out.

Hopefully this fixes the issue, but I have to give a thumbs down to my wasted time with Logitechs support since I basically ended up having to repeat myself in an email a few days later.

yes you can insert delay times, and other commands to be activated at the start and exit from each activity. It's a clunky process however.

I have mine set to go into the DVR settings sub menu, scroll down and select Digital out and on exit to repeat the same and select HDMI. That involved counting the sequence of button presses required to hit the appropriate menu, and then entering each individual press as a separate IR command in the activity order.

For that to be succesful however, you need a static point to work from. A command that is the same point in the process every time. If your component does not always start from the same point when you press the menu button for example, it won't work.

1) Anyone know if this remote works with the Pioneer DVR 640H-S DVD Recorder? Any features that won't work? If it does work, does it work as good as the older Pioneer remote for the 533 that everyone recommends getting to use with the 640?

2) Does the remote have updated icons and software that was once complained about when it was first released? If so, where can I get them and how do I install them?

Thanks guys!! Happy holidays :)

Unless you like the Soccer World Cup in which case you got a couple of new icons!

Me too. I've also had my 880 for about a year. Every time I sync for the last few months, the time is set ahead about 8 hours. And, I don't get AM/PM info anymore either. And the colon ( : ) overflows into the minutes.

Also: I did a sync today, after the Harmony Software did it's mandatory update, and now the Font Sizes are wrong again. It's all the same, large size. Not the typical Small Font on top, Large on Bottom I'm used to, and prefer.

I bought the 880 last week without researching it first (bad move) and discovered that the only apparent way to prrogram this nice looking remote is via a wizard driven web app. It didn't take too long to get incredibly frustrated with the lack of depth and customization that I need and normally get with Pronto and URC remotes but don't get with this software.

Is there a "proper" program app available for this remote or are there any plans of releasing one soon? As it is, this remote is simply not usable for me unless I can get in there and set it up to do what I want, the way that I want to do it.

Sorry my friend, you must have internet access to program. There is, now, a stand alone program, but still web driven. And you can program the Harmony the way you want.

What is it your looking for the remote to do that you feel you can't get it to do simply because it's a web based setup?

1. I use a video processor in my system that is not supported. Learning is a painfully slow process at best and even then the learned commands lock up the VP. The original remote and the same commands learned on other remotes work fine. I could fix the commands if I could get in with a hex editor.
2. I can't manually edit the "off" function. My projector requires hitting "off" twice.
3. I can't edit the activities to do what I want. For example, I specifically do not want the activity to change any setting on my projector, including the input choice since I do not change inputs ever. Most of my input commands are discrete except for the HDMI input...That one command toggles between HDMI 1 and HDMI 2, and since the software insists on selecting a projector input, it always toggles to the wrong one. I can get around it by executing a second "HDMI" command, but that takes extra time and adds 2 unneeded steps.
4. Every time I want to make a small change, I am forced to endure the entire wizard process. There is no way to simply drag and drop commands.

Any way to solve these problems?

That's just to give you an idea of what I have run into in the first couple of hours programming a remote that should have taken 15 minutes to program, and would have on a URC remote, not to mention that it would behave EXACTLY as I had intended.

This is my own fault...The remote looked so cool that I thought it would be really great. I never even dreamed that it would lack programming capabilities that I take for granted with other remotes...Live and learn.

klrbee25,

First each device has a an option to leave always on. So, you can say turn everything off
in your activity, these devices stay on. e.g. tivo. Secondly, for me, the 880 gave me discrete codes for all my devices. In the original setup, you can tell it to use toggle or descrete for turning on and off (on a device basis). I always use discrete. This appears to give you everything you need to do what you want. It doesn't matter what mode it is in, if you have discretes.

That sounds like it might have something to do with my problem. I'm concerned about what happens when you are already using one Activity and you switch to another one. Here's how it is:

- I assume that, when you set up any given Activity (such as 'watch a DVD') that you start from the assumption that all of your devices are powered off. Thus, when you set up an activity, you tell the remote to turn on every device associated with that activity.

- So when you are already doing one activity, you switch *to* another one, and there are some devices that you use in both activities (such as your TV, audio receiver, etc.), how do you make sure the Harmony knows that these devices are already on, and it doesn't need to turn them on again?

- I am also assuming that when the Harmony thinks a device is off and needs to be turned on, but doesn't know that the device is already on, it will end up turning the device OFF, since it will send a power on/off command to that device thinking it's off (but that same command will *turn* it off, because it's already on)

Perhaps I should explain further. I do exactly two things with my home theater, either watch TV (through my DVR box) or watch a DVD. So I would set up two activities with the remote...call them 'Watch DVR' and 'Watch DVD'.

- When I want to Watch DVR, I would tell the Harmony to turn on my TV, DVR box, and audio receiver.

- 'Watch DVD' activity would involve the Harmony turning on the TV, DVD player, and receiver.

Again, I'm assuming that when you set up an activity you have to assume everything is off, since I don't always do these things in the same order - i.e. sometimes I start out watching a DVD, other times I start out watching my DVR.

Anyway, let's say I start out by watching a DVD, so I select that Activity. Then let's say that a while later, I feel like watching my DVR. What will happen when I select the 'Watch DVR' activity? Will the Harmony know that my TV and audio receiver are already on? If it doesn't know that, won't it end up turning them off, since if it doesn't know they're on, it will try to TURN them on by sending them a power on/off command?

I always wondered about this.

I am going to get a Harmony 880, but I'm concerned about what will happen when I switch activities. I'm wondering if things might get powered off when I don't want them to.

Here's how it is: I do exactly two things with my home theater. Either watch TV (through a DVR), or watch a DVD. Now let's say I've been watching my DVR for awhile and I want to switch to watching a DVD. How can I make sure the Harmony won't turn all my stuff off when I switch from one activity to another?

The reason I ask this is, when you set up an activity I know you have to tell the Harmony to power on everything associated with that activity. But when I'm switching *from* an activity to another, how does the Harmony know that some of my stuff (like my TV and audio receiver) is already on? I assume that when you set up any activity, you have to assume that everything is off...

For example. When I set up an activity to Watch DVR, I would tell the Harmony to power on my TV, DVR box, and audio receiver. And when setting up the activity to Watch DVD, I tell it to power on the TV, DVR box, audio receiver, and DVD player (my powered subwoofer is connected to an outlet on the back of the DVR box, so the DVR always has to be on, no matter what I'm doing).

Now, if I've been watching DVR for awhile, and I want to switch to watching a DVD, how does the Harmony know that everything except the DVD player is *already on*? If the Harmony thinks things are off, it will try to turn them on - but since they're already on, it'll end up turning them off again, won't it? So how can I keep the Harmony from turning things off when I don't want it to?
If a device is on during a particular activity and you execute another activity that uses the same device, the device will stay on. It knows when a device is on and will not turn the device off if it is needed for another activity. For example, my plasma is used for Play DVD and Watch Satellite. If I go from one activity to the other, the plasma stays on and simply switches inputs. The other devices will turn on or off as needed.

^ Is that the way it works by default? Meaning, I don't have to specifically tell it to work that way?

The reason I ask this is because I've heard talk in this thread about "discrete" codes. I am guessing that this means the device in question has separate codes for turning off, vs. turning on - not a toggle on/off command. It would seem that the use of discrete codes would be what prevents the very problem I'm worried about.

But I have two questions about that:

- don't you specifically have to tell the Harmony that your device uses discrete codes? I've heard talk about that too, in this thread.

- Do all devices support discrete codes for power on/off? If a particular device doesn't, will things still work the way you just said (i.e. a device staying on if it's used for more than one activity)?

Good luck people with you 880's. I'm dumping mine and all of the extra chargers and batteries on someone willing to deal with this defective piece of junk. I ordered a new 720 from Target with their 3 year service plan. Hopefully I won't have to deal with Logitech's hardware support anymore. They do a great job if you need help setting your remote up, etc but they really let me down when my remote and/or chargers stopped working.

Welcome to the frustration club.

You might be able to solve the issues you want but you'll probably need to get creative in the activity IR list. If you're like me it will be a long, frustrating series of clicking through that damn wizard just to make minor adjustments to the IR sequence. Given your more complex equipment roster, it will probably be more frustrating.

Make sure you download the Firefox plug-in to enable button movement instead of having to delete and re-enter:

it makes the online config slightly less painful. You'll probably save some hair pulling as well.

First, use the web based setup at http://members.harmonyremote.com
Exit "wizard" mode by going to the "Home page".

1. Try learning the commands in RAW mode. I think you select "Custom" on the learning page.

2. Go to "More options" for the projector device, then "Adjust power options". Select "A button for ON, and a different button for OFF".
For ON, select "PowerToggle" from the drop down.
For OFF, select "Send more commands", then select "PowerToggle" twice.

3. Go to "More Options" for the PJ device, then "Adjust Inputs". Select "One button to scroll through inputs", then edit the list of inputs so it only has the HDMI input. It now won't send any input commands.

Yes, that's the way it worked for me - by default. I didn't do anything other than tell the setup whether the device had one power button for on /off or separate on/off power buttons. In my case, there was one power button in every case.

I believe discrete codes means codes that are manually programmed into the remote because your device is not available in the database, but I'm not sure. I have never had to deal with discrete codes as all my devices are in the database.

2) What kind of lighting controls can be controlled by this? Brand, link?

1) I think the PS3 is only controllable via Bluetooth out of the box, but not sure.

2) I suppose any lighting that accepts an IR signal would work.

There are hacks to make the 880 work with the PS3. Basically you need to use the PS2 infrared remote's receiver and a PS2>USB adapter from radio shack, then set up the 880 to control a PS2. It won't work for navigating the PS3 menus, but once you start the movie, you'll have control.

I'm thinking about buying a Harmony 880 for use with my Westinghouse LVM-42W2. I just hate having 4 different remotes!!! I'm all but sold on this remote except for reservations regarding this topic. Help, please!!!

BTW, Thanks in advance for any responses to my inquiry!

I have a Westinghouse LVM-42W2 and just got a Harmony 880 a few weeks ago.I'm happy to report that the two do work togeather. It took a little tweeking of the delay settings but I have it working well now and reliably switching to the correct input for whatever activity I want to do.

Here are the settings that worked for me. They may make a good starting point for you:

Power On Delay: 4000 ms

Inter-key Delay: 500 ms

Input Delay: 3000 ms

Inter-Device Delay: 1000 ms

Sure beats having 4 remotes to play with!

Good luck,

I have a very basic Lutron Spacer Remote lighting control (SP-600-HT). 1 tap: goes to preset level (ie, the last level I left the lights at)
2 taps: goes to full on
tap and hold for 3 seconds: makes the lights fade to off

so, I've got the Harmony to do the dim and bright, but I can't get it to do the tap functions. Does anyone have the Lutron SP-600-HT and have you been successful getting the Harmony to emulate it? Thanks, JEFF

I have the Motorola 6412 III cable box with PVR; the Sharp 42' Aquos; and Panasonic 5 disc DVD surround sound. The Harmony 880 can be tailored via the ACTIVITIES group to turn on the TV; Cable box; and DVD amp (with one touch) then change channels via the Cable box but adjust volume on the TV (all without having to change devices). You can even set up custom buttons of your most common functions and have them displayed.

I was worried about the capabilities of this unit having bought it online first and then finding some negative reviews, but if you understand the steps required to do the things you want, this unit can do it. I was very surprised at how customizable this unit is and even has some functions for devices I didn't know existed on the original remotes. The Logitech database really does a great job and if by chance you don't have the functions you want, the 880 will learn the commands from your original remote from the input sensor on the back on the 880.
This remote is may not be for the computer novice or senior who doesn't understand the internet. VERY Happy with this unit. My intial setup and tweeking took only about 25 minutes.

It's been a while since I did this, but I used the advanced programming capabilities of the light switch to customize it. I have the following custom buttons:

Lights Down - Slowly fades the lights to off.
Lights Up - Slowly brings the lights up to a preset level.
Dim Lights - Each keypress brings the lights down one level.
Brighten lights - Each keypress brings the lights upone level.
Lights Full On - quickly brings lights to full brightness.

If memory serves, I had to get the directions for customizing the light from the Lutron web site.

Once you customize the light, you can use the functions provided in the harmony database.

Lights Down is sent when I start a DVD - way cool.

You can simulate discrete codes on the DVI/HDMI inputs by sending a real discrete code (e.g. VGA), then the proper number of InputNext codes to land on the right input.

BECAUSE you're Sony. Let's review:

You put out thousands of batteries that can catch fire. You're the last to recall your own.

You stonewall settling with the HD-DVD group after YOUR history with Beta, MD, and PSP.

You create the follow-up to one of the most successful game systems and have the ability to pull yourself out from the brink and you insist it must have an internal Blu-Ray player. That increases your cost, negates your profit and causes mass shortages of product at EXACTLY the time you could sell all you can produce.

That's SONY, no baloney!

wait.. wait.. it's not that hard..

you have the origional remote right? just program that key in. there is a little IR window on the bottom so you can do that;.. I did it once becuase I didnt think the 880 had a "previous" button programmed.. (me being an idiot and forgot to just look for the HARD key).

but it will take IR commands that do not exist on the site.

when you assign commands , there should be an option "Learn Missing Commands".. took a little to get it in.. (short presses work best)

(On the 6412 remote, LIST is the key you hit to see the list of recorded programs you have.) I'm running the Harmony software right now, but I can't find the LIST command under the menu for the 6412 device. How do I get that command programmed into the Harmony?

I am tearing my hair out over this. Please help! :(

I think I found it as a command called "My DVR" or something like that.

We've found two ways to do it. If you press Device on the Harmony, you can then use the right soft key to scroll forward until you come to a page that says "MyDVR". That is the same as "List" on the original remote, and the same as "Now Playing" on a Tivo. I'm going to add that command to the main PVR screen of my Harmony.

The simpler way, when you're in the "Watch PVR" activity, is to just press the Menu button. That will bring up the Motorola menu and you can move to the DVR icon on screen. Then pick "Recordings" or something like that and you'll see your list of recorded shows.

I've remapped the "MyDVR" button to my "Watch MY TV" activity. On the "Watch My TV" activity, go into "Button Actions" (oh this is all via the web interface on your PC). There you can assign the key you want in the "Custom Button Label" section. I have assigned the "MyDVR" button to the 1st slot (it's the most used). It works like a charm. :)

The problem is that the Dish 622 remote has neither a "-" or "." to teach the Harmony. Most manufacturers use standard remote command sets and I'd guess the one Dish chose for the 622 has the "-" and "." in the set, but just are not used on the remote. So far I've had no luck locating those two commands elsewhere.

wait.. wait.. it's not that hard..

you have the origional remote right? just program that key in. there is a little IR window on the bottom so you can do that;..

Yeah, i finally got it to work. Awesome remote, setup was a breeze.

Now the only issue is when setting it up to "watch tv", it sets the TV to hdmi1 (it's a samsung H-s4676s dlp) but then at the end, after everything is working fine, it sets it to "air". I tried adding another command at the end to set the tv to hdmi1, hopefully that will work.

Thanks Khoney... I think I need to step up to the Maestro line as the simple, remote dimmer I have does not allow for the functionality I'm looking for. Thanks for responding though. JEFF

Here's the link to the Application Note:

Yep. I went through all the steps. Charged it up and ran the setup. All the devices set up properly according to the software. Everything is updated. I have the most recent software and firmware updates.

Now i'm just stuck in this endless loop of "select language-->go through intro tutorial-->press off to select language or ok to restart tutorial-->repeat."

Looks like contacting Harmony support needs to be your next step. They're very good, but if you call prepare to be in a holding queue for a long time, especially this week. I think you can contact them by e-mail too and you might want to go ahead and do that now.

One other thought, before you do that. You might try removing the battery for several seconds and then reinserting it to force another reboot of the device. Doubt that it will help, but can't hurt.

Good luck. I'm sure they'll get the problem resolved for you.

I have a very basic Lutron Spacer Remote lighting control (SP-600-HT). When I set up the device on the Harmony website, I guess its defaulting to giving me a lot of functions which my lighting remote does not have (ie, Scene1, Scene2, etc.). I have tried teaching the Harmony the remote functions my light remote has but still, the Harmony only performs the basic dim, bright, and power toggle.

My light remote has 2 small buttons (one above the other) that are bright and dim, and the bright and dim function does work onthe Harmony. My light remote has one other button - a bigger but than wors as follows:
1 tap: goes to preset level (ie, the last level I left the lights at)
2 taps: goes to full on
tap and hold for 3 seconds: makes the lights fade to off

so, I've got the Harmony to do the dim and bright, but I can't get it to do the tap functions. Does anyone have the Lutron SP-600-HT and have you been successful getting the Harmony to emulate it? Thanks, JEFF

You have the same problem that I had. The problem is with the old version of the Lutron Spacer. I got my Spacer way back in the early days of A/V Science.

To get your Harmony to do all of the Spacer functions, you have to put your Harmony in Raw mode to learn the commands from the Spacer remote. This may take a few times for you Harmony to properly learn the commands -- I'm guessing you will have to press the keys on the original Spacer remote perfectly.

In my case, I already had the Spacer commands learned on my old receiver's remote as a macro. I just played the macro in front of the Harmony to learn as a raw input and it worked like a charm on the first try.

I've been having challenges programming my 880 with my cable box (Motorola 3416-1) and the power off feature with my Mitsubishi HD1000U projector.

With the cable box, Power On/Off doesn't seem to register while other commands work sometimes and others dont (the supplied remote works great)

With the HD1000U there is a requirement to hit the Power Off button twice to power down the projector. I am having trouble figuring out how to put enough of a delay so that the projector recognizes the two commands. When setting it up within the Harmony software, it calls for the signal twice, but the projector doesn't seem to be able to register it.

Does anyone else have these devices and if so can you pass along your input delays/etc that you've been successful with? Any other advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

To add to my previous question:

I have a Lutron lighting system. To watch a DVD I had it set so when I click pause the lights come on, and play the lights go off.

When I went to set my watch PVR settings, I did not want the lutron lights to go on/off when I click pause/play, so what I did was change the function of the buttons so that the ^ arrows on my remote would control the lighting.

Problem is, when I go back to customize my watch DVD activity, it shows the lights set to the ^ arrows, and my pause/play settings for the Lutron lights in that particular activity had been removed. It seems as the changes I made has changed the Lutron device universally throughout all my activities to use the buttons I set in only one of my activities.

Is it not possible to have say a set of buttons do control the lights in one activity, and then another set of buttons to control the lights in another activity?

Thanks!!

I've forgotten how the tutorial works. Is it on the remote or the web software. if it's remote take out the battery, wait ten minutes or so and then connect.

If it's on the web interface it sounds like a cookie problem. Remove or unblock your cookies for the harmony site and make sure they are accepted the next time around. alternatively try another browser.

the harmony doesn't work that way. Device modes are used to replicate features of the original device remote. Macros do not exist in the typical sense.

Setting up an activity allows you to create a sequence of commands as it starts and ends that set up an environment.

eg. TV activity allows you to enter all the command sequences necessary to watch TV, and then the remote displays all the button associated with watching TV while you are in that activity.

All operation of the remote should take place 90% of the time in an activity, only switching to device modes temporarily for quick fixes and temporary operation of a specific device.

I know what you mean, the harmony software automatically applies similar button actions to different activities if they use similar components. I've managed to change this on my setup but I did it so long ago that I can't remember how.

You could try starting from scratch with one activity and adding the light controls to the LCD and leaving those hard buttons blank. If that works go into the activity again and map them to the place you would really like them to go and see if it accepts the new config.

Make sure you download the firefox plug in to make this easier.

I'm looking at getting an 880 to eliminate having to carry 4 remotes around with me. I currently have:
an older Sony DVD player for SD movies
XBox 360 HD DVD player for HD movies
Samsung HLS6187
Comcast Motorola DVR/STB

With the 880, can I configure the remote to work with both of my DVD players? Or can it only work with 1 DVD player?

I want to keep both players as I think the Sony does better upconverting than the XBox does for SD DVD's.

I see the 6412 settings.

When I press Menu on the Harmony while in the Watch PVR activity, I get a menu across the bottom of the TV that is titled "Quick Access Menu". It has a row of horizontal icons, the first one being a house. Selecting the House goes to the Setup menu. If I understand correctly then Menu is bypassing the Quick Access Menu on your Motorola DVR.

When you're in the Setup screen, if you press Menu again, what happens? On my system pressing Menu at that point takes me to the Quick Access Menu. The Quick Access Menu lets you select DVR and then view everything that has been recorded.

I don't see any settings on the Motorola 6412 that changes the behavior I'm seeing. Perhaps a replacement will correct the problem?

I've had my 880 since last April and decided to see if Logitech would deal with fact the charger simply was crap. So I wrote, and on Xmas Eve Logitech agreed to replace it under warranty and DHL just delivered the new charger base.

As soon as I put the 880 in the new base, it immediately went into charging mode. Sweet! because the old one required a book to put on top and a minute of figuring out the right angle to work. The new one worked as it should. Yeah!

Just got an 880 for Christmas, and got everything set up (for the most part) the way I would like. Love it! Except...

My tilt sensor doesn't work. I didn't use the disk it came with, just downloaded 7.0.2 straight from the website before reading that the latest update was causing tilt sensor problems. I saw that they are "working on it" in their FAQ post from SEPTEMBER, but obviously nothing has been done yet.

I tried their solution and removed the battery for a couple of minutes - no luck. I also tried the suggestion of taking the battery out and disabling (updating) and then enabling (updating again) the tilt sensor - again, no luck.

I'm wondering if I can somehow "update" to an older version of the software to get the sensor working again, and if so, how to do it? Or, any other tips? Any word on when they are going to fix the problem? (It's been at least 3 months)

Thanks in advance...

The keypad on my 880 is not nearly as bright as the screen...but it does glow. It glows just enough for me to barely make out labels on the keys...so you might want to make sure you're looking at it in a dark room (and not in a well lit room). I don't believe there's a way for you to disable/enable the keypad lighting...so if you're sure it's not showing up, you probably have a defective unit.

Have owned this for almost a year and am learning new things every day. One thing learned here was that indeed the keypad is illuminated, although at levels at I could never see until I took it into a very dark room. Until now, specifically looking for it, the "glow" was so subtle as to escape notice based on how our rooms are lit.

So, after coming home to play I can say that the answer is yes it is backlit, it is not as "bright" as the LCD and when the unit goes dark, the degree that it is illuminated becomes clear.

I just got this remote for the Holidays and I love it. I don't mean to hijack any conversation or anything but I have a quick question. I was experimenting and I took all the inter device delays for all my devices and put it down to 0ms and everything works fine, and really fast too. I only have about four devices.

My question is, can this damage my devices? Should I leave it at 0ms or bump it up a little?

I have a Mits DLP and just got the Harmony 880. Anyone know what code to use to turn off the TV speakers? When I watch TV I listen through the TV speakers...when I watch DVD's I go through the receiver. I cannot seem to find a code that shuts off the TV speakers.

Did you find a solution to this? I've got the same problem and when I called Logitech they couldn't figure it out and said someone would be calling me back...still haven't heard. I've tried everything I can think of...re-installed the firmware, took the battery out for an hour, update the remote with the desktop and web version of the management software...nothing seems to get it out of the loop.

Mine seemed to be doing that too... I just plugged it into the PC, programmed it via the website and now it's working fine.

Have owned this for almost a year and am learning new things every day. One thing learned here was that indeed the keypad is illuminated, although at levels at I could never see until I took it into a very dark room. Until now, specifically looking for it, the "glow" was so subtle as to escape notice based on how our rooms are lit.

So, after coming home to play I can say that the answer is yes it is backlit, it is not as "bright" as the LCD and when the unit goes dark, the degree that it is illuminated becomes clear.

hmmnn...i took the remote into a pitch black room tonight, and i cannot see the keys illuminated whatsover, even 1 foot from my face. the LCD lights up just fine. i guess i've got a defective unit?

i don't know if this is a dealbreaker or not for me, but i would hate to have to return it after spending a few hours getting it the way i wanted.

I have an older Mits 65907 RPTV (HD) which has a MUTE button on the TV remote that the Harmony sotware incorporates as one of the functions of my TV. So when I watch TV with a device that I have connected to my TV and to my receiver (sometimes I watch TV with the rest of my system on and sometimes off), I have in my activity set up for watching the TV, a step to set the TV's MUTE on.

See if your Mits DLP remote has a MUTE button. If so, you should be able to MUTE the TV in the activity where you don't want the TV speakers on.

My SA4200HD cable box responds very rapidly (good) to my key presses on the Harmony remote for changing channels; actually better than the SA remote itself. My problem is that for the favorites channels I have set up, when I select a favorite channel, the channel numbers appear to be entered very slowly to the cable box. How can I speed things up? I have the inter-key delay down to 0ms which lets me rapidly key-enter the channels manually, but I don't see in any of the troubleshooting or customizing options where I can speed up the favorites. Anyone have/solve this problem? thanks - JEFF

Reduce the Inter-Device delay as well

It appears that my 880 is turning on my TV first, then my DVR, and then my home theater system. Normally this is fine. As long as all we do is watch things from the DVR everything works well.

However, my TV rotates through inputs that are connected to the TV. If we watch a DVD, it appears that the TV is not seeing the HDMI connected DVD player. I think this is because the DVD player is not putting out a signal yet when the TV comes on. When I had things connected via components the TV knew about everything that was connected whether they were powered on or not. But with HDMI connections it appears that the DVD player must actually be powered on or the TV doesn't seem to know it exists.

I think the problem would be solved it the home theater system were always turned on first, but I don't know how to have the Harmony do that.
