BritInVA 03-23-10, 03:10 PM Well I decided to get the Samsung BD-C5500C - was a steal from Costco. Does what I need for now and I'll look at a more upscale player when I change out AVR/PJ in the future. It decodes both TrueHD & DTS-HD MA, plus it has the Netflix and PC Streaming capability which would be interesting to tryout. Hopefully play with it tonight...... if does not suit needs it will either go back to Costco's or end up in one of the Kids Bedrooms. BritInVA 10-06-10, 02:39 PM There was a question raised in BIGmouthinDC’s thread about refinishing cabinets. I recently did this in my kitchen and really pleased with the results. I didn’t document the steps with pictures  (AVS Sin) Basically when we moved into our current house in 2005 the kitchen was your basic builders quality oak with laminate counters….. the oaks was very mismatched and was UGLY! Don’t have a good pre-pictures but this will give you an idea. http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k242/BritInVA/Other/001-2.jpg When we moved in we immediately changed the counters for granite and all new stainless appliances with intention of upgrading cabinets later. However, then came the housing market crash – I lost about $200k in equity and was not going to drop another $30k into the kitchen so decided to refinish. Wife wanted an old-country look – cream with brown accents….. so this is what I did. 1) All cabinet doors and draws were removed and all hardware removed. 2) They were then all cleaned with a chemical deglosser 3) All top doors had 2 eyes screwed into the tops, and the bottoms had 2 eyes into the bottoms. This was so I could hang during spraying stage and you would not see the holes left behind. 4) I set up a hanging system in the garage using 2”x10”’s trussed across ladders with 2 hooks spaced along the hang the doors. 5) I set up a spray canopy in front of one of the garage doors so 3 sides, ceiling and floor were covered and just the front was open (to outside). Within canopy was a place to hang 1 door. 6) So process was to hang a door in canopy, spray, move back to staging area..... and repeat 7) My intention was to spray backs and fronts in one step but force of the spray made the door swing so had to create a thingamagiga to steady door and spray one side at a time and return to staging while the side dried. 8) I used 1 coat of Sherwin Williams Latex Adhesion Primer and 2 coats of Sherwin Williams Acrylic latex (custom tint). 9) In the crevices and edges I used a chocolate accent mixed with 1 part Sherwin Williams Acrylic latex and 3 parts Sherwin Williams Latex Faux Finish Glaze. 10) Last step was to spray a coat of clear Minwax Polycrylic. 11) The sides on the cabinets that were exposed were covered with bead board and painted by brush. 12) I added a crown and under cupboard accents with lights behind, also dressed up the island with newel posts and finally added stainless handles. And here is the finshed product http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k242/BritInVA/Other/SAM_0008.jpg Think cost me less than $1,500 and that includes buying the spray equipment. carboranadum 10-06-10, 02:42 PM Looks GREAT Mark! BIGmouthinDC 10-06-10, 07:50 PM Great example of a cabinet redo project. What kind of sprayer did you use? Belcherwm 10-06-10, 08:09 PM Very nice. You have some serious skills. BritInVA 10-07-10, 07:38 AM Thanks - CJ & Bill Big - I managed to get a WAGNER 1700 (Costco version I believe). I picked one up barely used for $150 off craigslist. Just had to buy a finer spray nosel. Debating whether to sell or keep. carboranadum 10-07-10, 08:25 AM Thanks - CJ & Bill Big - I managed to get a WAGNER 1700 (Costco version I believe). I picked one up barely used for $150 off craigslist. Just had to buy a finer spray nosel. Debating whether to sell or keep. Well, if you decide to sell it, I may be interested. BIGmouthinDC 10-07-10, 08:36 AM I need to paint 3 sets of louvered bi-fold doors, Do you offer any drive through service? BritInVA 10-07-10, 09:57 AM Well, if you decide to sell it, I may be interested. At moment I'm leaning to keep it. I know I have a project within nextr 2 years where I'll need it again. I need to paint 3 sets of louvered bi-fold doors, Do you offer any drive through service? Your welcome to loan it...... it takes some time to prep and clean so not something for small jobs. BIGmouthinDC 10-07-10, 10:59 AM Your welcome to loan it...... it takes some time to prep and clean so not something for small jobs. Plus it is a 300 mile trip. So I think I'll just dip the brush in the bucket. Thanks anyway. carboranadum 10-07-10, 01:11 PM Plus it is a 300 mile trip. So I think I'll just dip the brush in the bucket. Thanks anyway. HUH? Where in the world are you now Biggy? BIGmouthinDC 10-07-10, 01:53 PM From my house to the beach condo and back is 300+ BritInVA 10-21-10, 06:32 PM NOVA BREWFEST in Leesburg this weekend http://www.novabrewfest.com/ *Saturday & Sunday, October 23 & 24, 2010, 11:00 AM - 7:00 PM daily* I'll be there Saturday afternoon Belcherwm 10-21-10, 08:41 PM Fall event is in Bull Run Park! BritInVA 10-22-10, 06:10 AM Fall event is in Bull Run Park! Good catch - I hadn't noticed they switched venue from the Spring location BritInVA 03-22-11, 05:23 PM So mentioned in Cathans thread that was working on our Master bath - doing it in phases. Phase 1 was to change the vaulted ceiling to a tiered soffet and just a paint job. Phase 2 will be to rip out the current jaquizzi bath and tile but that will be later in year if the bonus is good. So Mr Logan Phase 1 complete Before http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k242/BritInVA/Other/SAM_0684.jpg http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k242/BritInVA/Other/SAM_0685.jpg After http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k242/BritInVA/Other/SAM_0703.jpg http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k242/BritInVA/Other/SAM_0704.jpg Think will be next year before HT Phase 2 starts. carboranadum 03-22-11, 07:28 PM That ceiling looks really good. What prompted the change? Monkey_Man 03-22-11, 10:42 PM BritInVA: I like your stage design. I like that you only filled the sections under the sub with sand instead of the entire stage. Did that end up working out regarding sound performance? BritInVA 03-23-11, 07:34 AM That ceiling looks really good. What prompted the change? Thanks - same reason I did the Master Bedroom the existing unsymmetrical vaulted ceiling made it difficult to do any architectural design (like crown) and it was a wasted heated area. BritInVA: I like your stage design. I like that you only filled the sections under the sub with sand instead of the entire stage. Did that end up working out regarding sound performance? Well I've not had any issues but I'm no audiophile. Dennis Erskine stated not enough mass. The downside is when I do MKII I'm going to have to redo the stage and create a new sand filled section along the back so can get sub out of the corner. tlogan6797 03-23-11, 07:39 AM I'm going to have to redo the stage and create a new sand filled section along the back so can get sub out of the corner. Sooooo...you're NOT done. I'm just sayin'. BritInVA 03-23-11, 07:49 AM Sooooo...you're NOT done. I'm just sayin'. Are any of us ever really truely done ;) tlogan6797 03-23-11, 07:57 AM Brit FINALLY gets it! You, my friend, have been enlightened. Now I have to think up a whole new designation for you. Chiahead 03-23-11, 10:27 AM Sounds like the young grasshopper just took the pebble from Logan's hand... That ceiling looks great Brit!!! BritInVA 03-23-11, 04:38 PM Sounds like the young grasshopper just took the pebble from Logan's hand... That ceiling looks great Brit!!! Oh crap - looks like I have just given Tom an escape clause as any time we mention a tweak/upgrade to out 'finished' HT's he will say we were not finished. carboranadum 03-23-11, 08:32 PM Well, being the PMP that Tom is, and the line of business that he is in (Gvt. Support), I'd have to say that it's not his fault. he's been brainwashed to think that you never really finish annyting, so shoddy work and cut corners are OK...you'll fix them up under a change order in the future. I can see his logic. Here in the world outside the beltway, projects actually get finished and people move on to the next thing. It is however, perfectly acceptable to begin upgrades without reopening the previous project. :-) tlogan6797 03-24-11, 09:18 AM It is however, perfectly acceptable to begin upgrades without reopening the previous project. :-) However, speaking as a PMP, you haven't yet convinced me to CLOSE the previous project. Here's a little lesson I learned years ago....."just because it's in production doesn't mean it's right." And, for the record, here's the sig line for my work emails..... BritInVA 05-02-12, 09:05 PM Well how about next Thursday 10th May? 7pm? carboranadum 05-03-12, 01:41 PM Neither Thursday (scouts) or Friday (backpacking trip) work for me. :-( Lift one for me or if you move it to a different date, maybe I'll lift one with you guys! BritInVA 05-03-12, 05:20 PM I can't do Mondays or Wednesdays (Bowling)..... how about Tuesday 8th? bmackrell 05-03-12, 09:19 PM next week tuesday and wednesday are no good for me, hockey games. tlogan6797 05-07-12, 07:33 AM Thursday the 10th works for me. Good to see the old guys and meet some new ones! snickers1 05-11-12, 09:43 AM was nice meeting everyone had a great time carboranadum 05-11-12, 01:02 PM Sorry to miss it. :( Hope you guys had a good night! ozziegt 05-17-12, 03:48 PM Was there any particular reason you put the soffits behind the drywall instead of on top of it? From a sound isolation perspective it seems like either way would work the same, but it might be easier to frame the soffits if they were outside of the drywall since they aren't part of the building framing at that point. BritInVA 05-17-12, 04:18 PM In hindsight was better methods on doing the soffets.... I pretty much just followed what others had done and also as the soffetts were used to route HVAC and Conduit was easier to have full access. landshark1 05-18-12, 08:58 AM Awww, I missed the meet (again)! :( smakovits 05-18-12, 10:03 AM Why is BIG the only one sweating in that picture? BritInVA 05-18-12, 10:21 AM I think Tom's was saturated so not easily to spot and as can see I'm super fit so didn't work up a sweat :) |
