antneye 04-12-06, 01:17 PM FYI...........
Town of Hempstead approved a Video Franchise with Verizon. FIOS TV should be available shortly for Town of Hempstead residents.
plasmatime 04-18-06, 05:13 PM Anyone have any insight on when New York, NY will be FiOS-ed? Sick of the TWC-Comcast hegemony in my condo. Finally an alternative!
Prisoner655321 06-07-06, 04:47 PM My Father in law works for Verizon, here in NJ. He was tryin to convince me not to Dump my DSL for cable. He said FIOS will be in many tristate areas including Northern NJ within 6 months. Now he is a higher up in the company, but not related to the FIOS part of teh company, so take tehse words with a grain of salt.

There has been a lot of Verizon trucks in the West Orange-Livingston area(Northfield Rd.-Mt.Pleasant Ave.) putting up new cables.
AndyHDTV 06-14-06, 07:07 PM I sent a email to an executive in Verizon asking about Fios, apperently he thought I was somebody else within the Company. A MUST READ
My Email:
"Mr. Pizzirani, can you tell me when Fios will be available in Manhattan?
07, 08?"
thank you, Andy
Email Routed:
"Andy,
John Schommer on my time can provide you more insight.
Thanks, Chris
John,
Please respond to Andy’s question. Thanks, Chris"
Response:
"Andy,
I assume that you are the Andy ******* (NY Field Tech). As I wouldn't want
to share this information externally just yet.
We are in Manhattan today, but only in a few locations where MDU
renovations have taken place (still considered a Greenfield). The biggest
issues with Manhattan are 1) permitting, and 2) TV franchising. We
anticipate the Video franchising sometime in mid 2008 - therefore you won't
see a large scale build in Manhattan until late 2007 or early 2008. Of
course, competitive market changes could also expedite these decisions and
deployments.
Note: These are not committed timeframes and should no be shared outside of
the company."

Great job Andy, I had a 180 spin of emotion- laughed at first and then woke up to the realization of no FIOS option for quite some time.
If you should continue to pursue information, ask about the Boroughs- Queens.
Ken Ross 07-24-06, 11:00 PM I thought the time was ripe for a FIOS thread for the N.Y. Metro area. Please post any issues or observations from your FIOS TV experience.
I got mine installed this past Friday and it's the best PQ I've ever seen from any provider.

Ken Ross 07-25-06, 11:45 PM Thanks Panther, I guess that original thread eluded me.

Ken, The real question is have they enabled the firewire ports and what is the 5c status if any?
andrewjnyc 08-12-06, 08:58 AM Yesterday, a big juicy packet of FIOS info was stuck on the bulleti board of my co-op building addressed "Attention Co-Op President". It was a letter requesting permission for Verizon FIOS hardware to be installed in the basement, complete with photos of what the setup would look like and details of what FIOS would provide. It was all written in a weird combination of legalese and technical jargon, but it really got me excited about the prospect that FIOS might be right around the corner here in Manhattan (I live on 11th St between Ave A and Ave B). I just ran down to the lobby to see if the packet was still there so I could xerox it before making sure it got to the prez, but now it's gone. I'm gonna email him to make sure he got it, and despite not being on the board I hope to volunteer to help make this happen if there's any chance it can happen soon...
Ken Ross 08-13-06, 10:40 AM For those that are interested, FIOS is now including main actors appearing in a given movie in their programming guide. Apparently this was missing until recently.
dad1153 08-13-06, 11:31 AM Any idea how long it will be before FIOS reaches Harlem? My lease has me stuck in my apartment until 2008 and I'd love to have an alternative for dumping TWC other than going with E*.
Ken Ross 08-13-06, 11:32 AM Dad, you're best bet is to actually call Verizon and see if they can give you an idea as to future plans.

Olevia37HD 08-14-06, 10:11 AM Changed my opinion of FIOS and will not give them a dime of my money!!!
Ken Ross 08-14-06, 03:53 PM "Cable companies say that figure is exaggerated, and they call Verizon’s television service a “me-too product.”
“There’s really no reason why anyone would want to switch from our service to theirs,” said Tom Rutledge, the chief operating officer at Cablevision, which competes with Verizon in the New York area."
I'll tell you this, if the cable companies 'really' believe this, then Verizon will surely succeed! Oh, and it doesn't explain why Cablevision was handing out coupons for free doughnuts in front of my local Dunkin Doughnuts! Does that sound like a company not concerned?

Ken Ross 08-14-06, 07:48 PM Also I don't which one but one of the Dolans had FIOS hooked up in he's home.
Now THAT'S funny! :D
SnellKrell 08-14-06, 07:49 PM Smart Dolan or dumb Dolan?
Ken Ross 08-14-06, 10:17 PM Based on having FIOS, I'd say 'smart Dolan'. ;)
dad1153 08-15-06, 08:52 AM Are we talking about the financial expert Dolan and the MSG/Knicks owning Dolan? And that the former got FIOS while the latter (who owns Cablevision) wishes to but knows if it leaked to the press it would look bad for his cable co.?
SnellKrell 08-15-06, 08:58 AM I'm sure the ironic twist is that the comment was about the MSG/Knicks/Cablevision Dolan family.
Really makes no difference whether the FIOS user is the father or the son - they control a directly competitive service providing the same services.
any firsthand experiences from people on long island who have FIOS? hows it look?
i was at roosevelt field mall over the weekend and there was a FIOS booth showing off their HD and internet service.
Ken Ross 08-23-06, 03:58 PM In a word, 'spectacular'! I'm extremely impressed with both the HD and SD on FIOS. This system puts the 'wow' back in to HD which was sorely missing from D* for quite some time. In addition I'm getting much more HD than I had with either Cablevision or D*. Add to that very quick channel changes and a PVR that IMO is perfectly fine (although a bit lacking in HD space), and you have a winner.
In fact today I just switched everything else over to FIOS, telephone and internet. My internet speeds are now 2 1/2 times what they were with Optimum at the same price. To be honest I never had anything really bad to say about Optimum On-Line, but why not get greater speeds for the same price?
afinemetsfan 08-23-06, 11:44 PM I had FIOS internet installed here in Staten Island last week, I talked to the tech about the TV roll out. He said the hardware is all ready to go, they are just waiting on the franchise. Which he said ETA was 6 months, but he also said that they were being told 6 months, 2 months ago.
Anyways, he said that every FIOS internet customer will get a phone call as soon as they get the franchise, and that internet customers will have first dibbs at TV. Hmm, I cant wait to give TWC the boot.
antneye 08-25-06, 04:12 PM According to my sources the FIOS network is being built in Manhattan in a few locations, with more offices expected to be seeded next year. In fact it is presently available for buildings fed from their E56th St Central office. It is very slow going because, unlike in the suburbs, this has to be done building by building in an urban area like Manhattan, and negotiations to gain the right of entry from building owners can be very tedious. If you live in NYC (especially around E56th St) and want to get FIOS it is absolutely critical that you let your landlord, condo-board, etc. know that you want this technology allowed into your building.
If you have a specific building in mind, send me a PM and I will see what I can learn for you.
Firehawk295 09-28-06, 10:56 AM Verizon is now taking orders for FiOS TV service in the Long Island village of Lynbrook, and in the Town of Clarkstown hamlets of West Nyack, Central Nyack and Valley Cottage in Rockland County

By a unanimous 48-to-0 vote, the City Council okayed a new cable television franchise law Wednesday – paving the way for Verizon Communications to negotiate a franchise with the Bloomberg administration.
Ken Ross 09-28-06, 02:49 PM Hey Verizon, we STILL need YES HD!!!!
and FSNY, and MSG (SD&HD). Local NHL action starts tonight and I'm going to have to switch over to Cablevision to watch the games (during breaks in the Mets game, of course).
Just got word from a CSR that Versus (OLN) will be available on FiOS-TV 10/31, No word about HD.

Any word on YES HD for next season Ken?
Nothing. I can't even get a good idea on MSG & FSNY SD! They just keep saying they're in negotiations. I hope you're continuing to bug them, too. We need to stay on them to prove demand.
Ken Ross 10-10-06, 11:24 AM Ken I call them every week on that. I really don't understand the rationale of carrying the SD version and not the HD side. It must be 2 different contracts, but it's hard to believe it would be negotiated that way.
SnellKrell 10-10-06, 12:23 PM Yes, whether it's cable, satellite or FiOS, SD and HD carriage of channels are usually two separate contracts.
AndyHDTV 10-16-06, 10:47 PM I attended the digital life convention yesterday and spoke with verizon, and they confirmed suspicions that manhattan could see Fios late 07 in to 08.
He also mentioned that apartment buildings will not exactly get the fiber to the premises. The fiber optic line will end at the beginning of the building and then change to coaxial cable.
So it's basically the same as what TWC has in the city now.

This is the typical misinformtion that you get from talking to people at things like this.
A) FIOS is already available in certain portions of NYC
B) FIOS will be available in additional portions of NYC in 07 and will continue to expand year over year
c) One possible configuration of MDU deployment is to demarc the fiber in a telco closet on the floor or basement.......however, the preferred deployment is to bring the fiber directly into the living unit. It all depends on the property owner and the layout of the building. Most of the MDU deployments so far in NYC ( a high majority) have been fiber right into the Living unit.
I work for Verizon and the company seems to be non-stop with Fios. All overtime and money is being spent on Fios. Fios TV is also getting approval in many places at a fast rate. I believe it will be starting in Brooklyn soon as they are asking employees to shift around. I cant wait to get it in my area and it seems Brooklyn might be good to go in majority of the places towards the end of 2007. I hope.
Firehawk295 10-18-06, 04:17 PM Purchase FiOS TV before Nov. 7, 2006, install it before Feb. 15, 2007, and get two free months of Premier Package

raylock 11-05-06, 09:43 AM Does anyone know whether Verizon has made their plans for FIOS known? I am interested in plans for Berkeley Heights (Union County) especially the 908-490-XXXX exchange, which seems to be a Plainfield substation. I have asked Verizon CS several times but the standard response seems to be "Don't call us, we will call you :( )
FYI, SNY-HD should be on the system within the next couple of days. Channel 815. Too bad we missed Mets season, but we're making progress!
Ken Ross 11-05-06, 12:00 PM Ken, any news about YES HD? I would think that can't be too far behind SNY-HD.

Firehawk295 11-17-06, 10:39 AM MSG and FSNY finally! Nothing mentioned about HD for the NY RSNs. Baby steps, but progress is progress.
The agreement includes distribution rights for MSG Network, FSN New York, FSN New England and for FSN New England's high-definition programming. Verizon will also carry Rainbow's national networks -- AMC, WE tv, IFC and fuse, along with its original on-demand networks, Mag Rack and sportskool

The press release (http://newscenter.verizon.com/press-releases/verizon/2006/verizon-and-rainbow-media.html) was posted here yesterday in the FiOS master programming thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=590208)
FYI, SNY-HD is finally live. Its been in the guide for over a week, but there was no signal. Instead, there was a "call to subscribe" message. They finally worked it out. Needless to say, the programming is light in the baseball off-season, but if you like thier programming, you'll like it more in HD.
Great to hear about the RSN deal. Hopefilly it includes the HD channels.
cat6man 12-04-06, 05:51 PM is verizon putting all their simulcast digital stations on 5C encryption, requiring an STB at every TV set, or can we use our cable ready tuners to tune non-encrypted channels?
also, do they support cable card?
i'm putting in FIOS internet tomorrow but will not convert my cable TV if they are forcing me to add STB's in every room to get digital version of SD channels.

There are analog channels you can get without a box. You can also get a cable card.
Ken Ross 12-07-06, 07:32 PM Great news!! YES HD has just been added to the FIOS channel lineup!
Okay, that takes care of baseball season (and a little basketball), but how about hockey season?!
Firehawk295 12-10-06, 09:21 AM Okay, that takes care of baseball season (and a little basketball), but how about hockey season?!
Rest assured, Mr Dolan will drag that out as long as possible.
MSG is being added in SD. It will be channel 66.
MSG-SD active today, channel 66. Lets hope FSNY as well as HD is not far behind.
The following SD channels are being added:
129 WE
186 FUSE
201 AMC
304 FSNNY
321 MSG2
322 FSNY2
385 IFC
Verizon screwed up FSNY/FSNY2 feeds last night. They were the same feed - the Devils game. Should have been the Devils on FSNY and Islanders broadcast of Isles/Rangers game on FSNY2. I called them and they acknowledged the issue, but were unable to correct it for the game. Anyway, during the discussion, the CSR said they are definitely adding FSNY-HD and MSG-HD, but not sure how soon they would get them up and running. I'm crossing my fingers!
Phil056 12-20-06, 10:27 AM KenA,
I'm thinking about switching over to FIOS and was wondering if you had IO before this and if so, would you recommend moving over to Verizon? I live in Smithtown, and I keep getting the mail to switch over, I currently have the IO silver package w/ the 8300HD DVR, internet and optimum voice. I just wanted an opinion from someone that lives relatively close to me?
Thanks for your time in advance,
Phil
Phil,
I have both iO and FiOS right now until FiOS gets FSNY-HD and MSG-HD. I need my hockey games in HD! I have the basic family package with iO and no DVR. I do have the FiOS DVR, so I can compare to TiVo. I used to have D* with HD-TiVo. I also have VOIP through Vonage.
Anyway, to answer your question, I have much happier with FiOS than with iO. SD picture is much better on most channels and HD is comparable, if not slightly better on some channels and more HD channels are available on FiOS. FiOS is also cheaper. I can't wait to get rid of Cablevision. A lot of the issues are covered in this and the programming thread, but if you have any specific questions, fire away.
Phil056 12-20-06, 12:01 PM Ken,
I hear ya about the HD hockey games, thanks for the info.
I might wait until they are included, also have to think about the internet option as well, but I've had no problems with optimumvoice and I don't want to change to a new number again.
But thanks again, and if needed will bug you again! :)

not exactly my question about 5c.....perhaps an indirect answer that they 5c everything?
can anyone confirm if VZ are putting 5c on all simulcast SD channels? if they do, i stay with comcast

Vonage allows porting of phone numbers. I've had the same number since I moved in 5 years ago. I started with Verizon and changed a few times for analog. Then I went to VOIP with Lingo. They sucked, so I went to Vonage. Kept my number through it all, at $32.92/mo unlimited in NA and much of EU.
Firehawk295 12-21-06, 09:59 AM I don't want to change to a new number again.
Local number portability legislation was passed years ago. You most certainly can change providers and keep your current number.
Mr Dolan is well aware of the MSGHD and FSNYHD issue allowing him to keep the diehard hockey fans as CV customers. Problem for him is VZ has deeper pockets than CV, so they can fight CV through the enlongated court battles that always seem to involve CV and carriage agreements.

Couldn't said it better myself! They love hearing "High definition exclusive to Cablevision customers!"

So since my number changed to OV (656-xxxx) when I went to OV (had issues with my old verizon number) last year, I can transfer my current 656 number to Verizon if I decide to switch?
If so, and from what I've read about the internet service as well, (mine bogs down everynight around 6pm - 11) it might be a good idea for me to really consider moving over.
Thanks for your comments!

Yes, you can transfer that number to anywhere. Just remember, Verizon phone is still analog and is more expensive. They're supposedly working on a VOIP option, but I haven't heard anything lately. I went with Vonage for VOIP phone service, but I use Verizon for TV and Internet, which rocks at a steady 10Mbps down, 2Mbps up. I never have any problems and the speed is always consistant.
I have a stupid question. I tried to call but since it is Christmas they are closed. The charge for the HD-DVR is just $12/month right? Do I have to pay any other charges? I ask because Comcast here hits me for a receiver rental charge and a DVR charge.

Right but if I want an HD-DVR are they going to hit me with a $9.99 HD box charge AND a $12.99 DVR fee? That is what Comcast does.
one could always go with "cable card" + tivo 3 for HDdvr action - of course, u then have to pay tivo. Anyone know how much they charge for "cable cards" - hopefully u don't have to "rent" them.

Yes you have to rent them and your cable company charges a set up fee.

brigont 01-23-07, 12:40 PM I have not been able to find a FIOS TV thread on service/experience in NEW JERSEY
Can someone either guide me to an NJ FIOS thread and/or can we establish this as a home base for all discussions on Verizon FIOS TV in New Jersey.
I have been waiting for the service in Randolph NJ for some time...
Are there any Verizon Fios team members in the forum who can provide more info on the rollout plan. Also, is there anything we (the avg citizen home theater enthusiast) can do to help "inspire" the rollout?
Thanks in advance.

brigont 01-26-07, 10:44 AM Is anyone in northern NJ getting Fios TV yet?
There are some people in the southern part of the state that seem to be getting it?
Please advise.
BG
NorthJersey 01-26-07, 10:48 AM I'm not holding out hope that Sussex Co. will be getting FIOS (internet or video) anytime soon. Morris County has a much better chance due to the several affluent towns in that county
The "New York" in the thread title is for the DMA so it includes the parts of NJ that are in the NYC DMA.
I am not sure where you draw the line but I am in Monmouth County and I am having TV installed on Monday.
On the DSLR Fios TV forum there are posts by people in Waldwick and Millington and other places that have FiOS TV.
Does anyone have any information on if or when FIOS will be available in Brooklyn?
Verizon is having franchise trouble in NYC. It's going to be years ... and if you live an an apartment building or any landlord-run building, VZ has to get permission from each of the building's owners to let in cable. FYI VZ plans to bring its fiber only to a junction box; unless the building or VZ runs fiber through the building it's going to be copper into the home. Same as Cablevision or Time Warner.
Why change?

Subject: FSNY HD/MSG HD???
Good Afternoon,
I'm trying to convince myself and my father to switch to FiOS for all 3 (4counting wireless phone) services,
but the lack of HD hockey(sports in general for that matter) that would be provided by FSNYHD and MSGHD troubles us both.
Are there any plans on bringing those HD channels to FiOS soon? or does it look like it will just be Standard Definition
for those channels for years to come?
p.s. this will be a very big hindrance to sportsfans in the ny/norther nj area, and it frankly amazed me that this rainbow deal went
through without the HD versions of those channels...80% of people i know can't wait to get rid of cablevision, but this will make
a lot of them stay put...
Sincerely,
Robert L

Thank you for considering a switch to Verizon. To answer your question as directly as I can, Rainbow withheld the HD versions of its services from FiOS customers by refusing to negotiate with Verizon for HD.
We have other great sports programming in HD, so I hope you look at FiOS TV as a whole when you make your decision. We appreciate your comments, and I've sent them to the team that negotiates our programming content.

That is not surprising. Cablevision knows that FSNY/MSG HD are the biggest hammers it wields programming wise to keep customers. Unless they are forced by the government you will never see them on any service that directly competes with Cablevision. The only reason FiOS was able to get MSG and FSNY in SD is because the government was about to intervene and force a resolution. ATM, there is nothing that can be done about HD.
What did you do to get a response? I don't see anywhere on the FiOS TV site where you can e-mail questions just phone numbers.
i searched around press clippings and other media related sites cross-ref'd with verizon, and happenned to see this woman's email on so i figured i give it a shot, i was very please and shocked i got a responce, and signed up for this message board so i could post my findings, email me at blewan (at) optonline (dot) net if you would like her email address, i dont want to post it on the board yet(i dont even know if i'm allowed or not to do so, but figured i may as well play it safe) -Rob
I've been bugging Verizon about the HD feeds for MSG and FSNY for a while. At first they were very adamant that they would be getting the feeds. I've noticed a significant curtail of the enthusiasm over the past couple of months. I am seriously doubting it will ever happen. Cablevision has absolutely no incentive to provide them.
Motortree 02-10-07, 09:28 AM not exactly my question about 5c.....perhaps an indirect answer that they 5c everything?
can anyone confirm if VZ are putting 5c on all simulcast SD channels? if they do, i stay with comcast

I guess thats true, but it does show that CV is worried about the competition...
also, the most aggrivating thing is how you see So.NJ get philly's fsn hd and boston gets that local fsn hd, it's only the ny/nj metro area FiOS getting F'd out of the HD sports...

There are reasons for this. Verizon struck a deal with Comcast not to offer TV in Philadelphia for a certain time (I think until 2009 but I cannot recall for certain) in exchange for being able to offer CSN-Philly in NJ.
You are wrong about Boston. They do not have any local sports channels in HD on FiOS according to this:
http://www22.verizon.com/NROneRetail/NR/rdonlyres/B1670797-E82E-4496-9FC5-23B29AA42D71/0/MA_MAArea.pdf
Cablevision did acquiesce on FSNE-HD but that is because they do not provide service in MA so Verizon will not directly compete with them (Verizon cannot offer FiOS in CT) and because they only own a 50% stake in FSNE.
I had thought that Comcast had a stake in NESN but that is wrong. I am sure it will be available on FiOS eventually since it is available on D* and E*.
I am just glad the Mets and Yankees formed their own networks to get away from Cablevision.
Yeah, now i just have to figure out if me being in No.Jersey falls into the NY area, or the northern nj section of fios coverage, b/c the nj channel list does not have SNY HD and the NY listings do...
the NY lineup is for NY only. If you live in NJ you get the NJ lineup.
So, they did a channel linup switch recently, and was siked to get more HD channels and NOTHING!!! What's up with that?? What "new" channels did we even get??
Ken Ross 02-16-07, 03:27 PM New channels will probably be coming in March/April when other realignments in other areas are complete.
AndyHDTV 02-18-07, 03:50 PM Andy,
Verizon does provide FiOS in Manhattan, but only in a few greenfield locations. Manhattan is a difficult location to obtain city franchise, build permits as well as agreements with MDU owners. Any deploments in the city will be will orchestrated but limited. Can provide more specifics tommorow.
John

Yeah, i know what you're saying Tiyuri, but the FiOS site is vague at best on it's areas, it asks you to pick a state, then an area of that state...
for NY they only have one choice, NY AREA and for NJ they have No. and So. NJ,
where i am in NJ, i am 10 minutes away from the city in bergen county...many
of whom who reside here consider this a "NY AREA" considering i can get to MSG quicker than i can to NEWARK airport...so why wouldn't i expect to at least have
Sportsnet NY HD for the Mets?
ya know what i mean?
But the key is that you selected a state. And the state you live in is NJ. You may consider it "NY area" but it is NJ first and foremost.
bigmark 02-19-07, 01:08 PM Does anyone know when this is coming out in the northern NJ - Passaic County - area? I haven't been able to find a rollout schedule anywhere.

Firehawk295 03-13-07, 07:07 PM http://newscenter.verizon.com/press-releases/verizon/2007/verizons-fios-tv-approved-in-5.html
ORANGETOWN, N.Y. - Residents of this Rockland County community are a major step closer to having a real choice for their cable television services, thanks to a vote Monday night (March 12) by the Orangetown Board of Trustees to approve a video franchise for Verizon. The board's vote brings to 29 the total number of New York communities that have approved agreements authorizing Verizon to offer its FiOS TV service.
"This is great news for residents of Orangetown, who now have a new choice for their video entertainment," said Monica Azare, Verizon senior vice president for New York and Connecticut. "Verizon's FiOS TV offers consumers something they've never had before, with incredible pictures and sound clarity and innovative new services - all from a brand they know and trust."
Orangetown joins a growing list of New York communities that are paving the way for competition and choice in the television market. In addition to Orangetown, Verizon has been granted video franchises in Rockland County by the communities of Clarkstown, Nyack, South Nyack, Upper Nyack and Grandview-on-Hudson. Verizon also has video franchises in the Westchester County communities of Irvington, Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Tarrytown, Eastchester, Mount Kisco, Elmsford, Port Chester, Tuckahoe and the Town of Greenburgh, and on Long Island in the villages of Massapequa Park, Cedarhurst, Laurel Hollow, Lynbrook, Mineola, East Rockaway, Farmingdale, Valley Stream and Freeport, and the towns of Huntington, Smithtown, Hempstead and Oyster Bay.
As with all local franchise approvals in New York, the agreement between Verizon and Orangetown is subject to review by the New York State Public Service Commission.
oxfdblue 03-14-07, 08:04 PM I'm getting FiOS internet service here (Staten Island) on Saturday. An installer was here today to bring the fiber optic cable to the house (he also put the ONT box on the outside since he'll finish things up Saturday morning).
Anyway, I asked about the TV service and he said that VZ is trying to get Staten Island split off from the rest of the city. Since the almost the entire island is ready for FiOS, they don't want to wait for the rest of the city. He said it could be available in two months. But who know how long two months really is in this case.
Regardless, it is just a matter of time.

considering we were first to get FIOS internet, I could see this happening. It would be great as Time Warner sucks!
A Verizon rep told me over the phone that Mercer County gets the NYC Locals in HD. Nothing on their web site says that. Can someone confirm. I would switch if I am assured that I would get YES and the NYC Locals in HD so I can see the Yankees and Giants in HD.
Comcast only has the Phili channels in HD which means I get the wrong local news in HD and very few Giants games in HD.
Anybody hear anything about SNY-HD in NJ? One of the business office reps told me, "Guaranteeed by Opening Day." Unless she meant the home opener, I guess she was making that up.
The Mets home opener is technically opening day for SNY-HD since they don't show road games in HD.

If you download the Mercer County Channel Lineup from the FiOS programming webpage (http://www22.verizon.com/NROneRetail/NR/rdonlyres/70E0E9E1-2C1C-4B0F-8EF6-496DF0EEDF2C/0/NJ_MercerCounty.pdf)it clearly states that both the NY and Philly locals are available in HD as well as Yes HD. I just printed it and it's dated March 2007. It does NOT show SportsNet NY in HD as being available. As a Yankee fan and Giants fan living in Mercer County, this is prompting me to test drive FiOS TV. I've been a DirecTV user for years, they have my parents North Jersey address as my address so I've been getting the NY locals even though my town is in the Philly dma. But DirecTV's recent switch to MPEG4 has made me lose YESHD and is making me upgrade a bunch of gear and do some unnatural things to get the new gear installed. I think I'm willing to give up the Sunday Ticket and MLB Extra Innings for better picture quality and ending my dma switcharoo dance. Since I already have FiOS internet, I decided to test drive FiOS TV on my main HD set for 30 days, if I like it I'll switch, if not I'll cancel since they have a 30 day money back guarantee. Unfortunately the first install date I get was 3 weeks out.
I ain't holding my breath for that either.
I checked with SNY on this and they said that all home games will be in HD again this year but not away games.
SNY will once again provide all home games in true HD, however, at this time we have not confirmed whether any of our away games will be available in true HD (all away games will be upconverted to HD, which is still a better quality than SD). Offering away games as well as show highlights and clips in true HD is certainly something we are working towards.

Thank you very much for the link. Please keep us posted on how your trial goes. The channel line up looks very good except for no WNET. As a Yankees / Giants Fan as well as being originally from NYC I really want the NY Channels. It is likely that I will switch from Comcast soon but I was hoping to find some people in Mercer County that have already switched to get feed back on the service.
wade325 04-03-07, 03:43 PM I can live without NY based PBS WNET, I don't watch a lot of it, and Mercer County FiOS carries both the NJ and Philly PBS channels in HD. I'm excited that FiOS carries WWOR in HD, as DirecTV does not and I was never getting the games in HD on Channel 9. I'm not sure that they're in HD, but I think the home games are.
My FiOS TV install is scheduled for 4/23. I'm going to run both DirecTV and FiOS for a few weeks so I can compare PQ, the DVR functions, ect. It's going to be hard for me to switch from DirecTV, I've been with them a long time. I'll especially miss the Sunday Ticket and MLB Extra Innings. I've watch a lot of Red Sox games over the years to keep tabs on how they're playing and my father-in-law is a big Cardinals fan, so it was always easy to get free baby sitting on the nights Cardinal games were on. I really wish FiOS carried Rangers games in HD, but understand why Cablevision is holding that back from the deal they have with Verizon.
I'll try to remember to come back to this thread and provide an update.
I checked with SNY on this and they said that all home games will be in HD again this year but not away games.
And, so far, none of 'em will be in HD on Fios in Northern NJ.

We just called our contacts at Verizon again and the tentative date for
launching SNY in HD in New Jersey is May 1st. If you have any
additional concerns, we encourage you to contact Verizon directly.
Thanks,

JBBO3314 04-05-07, 05:09 PM Just wondering when or if verizon fios wiould be available in queens,NY it sounds good can anyone give me a clear answer as to the difference in HD picture quality if any. Right now there extra HD channels amongst other things appeal to me right now.
icemannyr 04-15-07, 04:52 PM I can't speak for the cable HD's but the local HD channels look as clean with FIOS as they did with iO.
The SD movie channels look 100% better on FIOS.
FIOS also offers the SD movie channel audio in DD 5.1 for programming recorded with it. iO does something to HBO so you no longer get DD 5.1 audio on programming offering it on the SD feed.
Also both the NJ and NYC area FIOS systems carry WNJN (PBS) and WNYC.

When I had FiOS internet installed at the end of March, the installer said that Verizon was trying to get the TV here as quickly as possible and rumor was that it could be as early as June.
They are trying to get permission from the city to start on the island first because it is almost entirely wired for fiber and not wait for the other four boroughs to be completely wired as well.
The City Council passed the needed legislation last year to allow for the negotiation of a franchise for Fios tv, but I can't find any updates on nyc.gov- the city website.

[Newsday 4/18/07]
New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo yesterday blasted the quality of Verizon's repair service, especially on Long Island and in Queens, saying the telephone company should issue rebates for inadequate performance.
"We should not accept Verizon's empty promises for turning around its woefully inadequate repair service," Cuomo said in a statement///
He said competition hasn't eliminated the problem, noting that the worst regions for repair service are the areas where Verizon faces the most competition.
In December, the PSC identified areas where it considers Verizon service "habitually poor," including Queens, Nassau and Suffolk, except northern Suffolk.

This is a follow up to my post about 3 weeks ago. My installation in Lawrenceville using the Mercer County package was completed yesterday, the courteous technician was in and out in under 2 hours hooking up 2 DVRs and 3 STBs. To answer your specific questions: I receive all of the Philly and NY locals in HD. That includes Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC, CW and MY. I receive 2 HD PBS channels, WHYY out of Philly and WNJT out of NJ. WNET from NY is not included in the package in either SD or HD. YES HD shows all of the Yankee HD broadcasts, SportsNet NY HD shows all of the Mets HD broadcasts and Comcast Sportsnet Philly HD shows all of the Phillies HD broadcasts. One added bonus is that since I was considered in the NY DMA with DirecTV (I was using a North Jersey billing address) Yankee games on ESPN were blacked out if they were also on Yes. That is no longer the case, so if I want to, I can choose to watch the national ESPN broadcast. For blackout purposes Verizon appears to consider Mercer county in the Philadelphia DMA
Now for picture quality comparisons. I was a DirecTV HD Tivo user, my neighbors with HD I used for comparison use Comcast. Neither of my TV's support the 4:3 480i setting that is recommended for the best SD PQ, I have it set to off on both. The HD PQ is significantly improved over what I was getting with DirecTV and is about the same or just slightly better than Comcast. The SD PQ is vastly improved over DirecTV and Comcast. If I zoom in on a letterboxed movie in SD it looks as nearly as good as a 480p DVD looks on the same TV.
So after 6 years I called and cancelled with DirecTV. I'll miss the Sunday Ticket a little bit during football season.
Had one more conversation with Verizon today regarding SNY-HD in Northern NJ. I got what has sounded like the most authoritative answer so far. Basically, when they started in NJ, Verizon was operating under their New York franchise agreement for SNY, which is why they listed SNY-HD as being available in the early days. However, since turning things up in NJ; they now have 3 areas for which franchise agreements are required. North Jersey, South Jersey, and Mercer County. SJ and Mercer County are complete and can offer SNY-HD. Currently, the franchise agreement for North Jersey does not include SNY-HD, and there is no ETA. "Probably soon," was all I could get, but he made no promises and apologized for all the confusion.
So that's where it stands now. No agreement for SNY-HD in North Jersey and no info for when.
I'd switch back to Comcast to watch the Mets in HD, but then I'd have to give up Lifetime Movie Network HD :).

10+ years ago when msnbc came on they signed exclusives with the local -cable- operators, and there are reportedly clauses in that contract which shut out telco tv. that's the situation on long island where cvc is the monopoly in question.

As I have said previously in this thread, Verizon is presently building FIOS in various portions of NYC. Unfortunately until a video agreement is reached with NYC, only voice and data will be available. If you are specifically asking about Manhattan, their are many offices where FIOS is available. Verizon is going building by building and trying to negotiate the rights to build the network in the multi-dwelling unit (MDU)environment. This is a tedious process since you often have to deal with landlords who dont care, or condo boards who don't necessarily understand why they need the service. As I have offered previously, if you live in Manhattan and would like to find out where your building stands send me a private message and I will see what I can find out for you. I have contacts in the company and may be able to help. I will not discuss specific buildings in the main forum.
Who knows, maybe Verizon has approached your landlord or coop board and they have not expressed an interest in giving permission. It could be that your voice may help Verizon get into your building.
Edit: Side note: If you think you may qualify for FIOS and would like some assistance verifying, send me a PM. I may be able to help there also.
oxfdblue 04-25-07, 06:43 PM As I have said previously in this thread, Verizon is presently building FIOS in various portions of NYC. .... I will not discuss specific buildings in the main forum.

Thanks for the reply and offer of help. Actually, I'm on Staten Island where most of the communities are wired and many people- including myself- already have FiOS internet and phone service.
I understand the problems of MDUs and other developments. Some of the townhouse/condo develops here have underground cabling. Some of the homeowners' associations have not been very cooperative in letting Verizon come in to put in fiber as it means tearing up parking areas, etc. This is the case where my mother lives. Verizon wants to do the work, but the homeowners' association and the managment agency don't want their just resurfaced parking lot torn up.
For me, I'm just waiting for the FiOS TV so I can dump Time Warner. Rumors here abound that it will happen rather soon- in a month or two, but there is simply no way to find out what is actually going on between VZ and the City.

Even those in the know aren't certain when an agreement will be reached. Things are very fluid and changing all the time. It will happen at some point, and my guess is it will be sudden and without warning.
You are correct that most of Staten Island is complete. Parts of Queens and the Bronx are also complete, and Brooklyn is being started this year. All 5 burroughs are in the process of being cabled.
As I said earlier, anyone who would like to find out if they are qualified or get some assistance with ordering feel free to PM me. I should probably post this in the main Verizon forum, but I can probably be most effective within NY.
Edit: My knowledge and support that can be provided will deal with the network buildout. I have absolutely no contacts who can assist me with programming information.....just so I dont get a bunch of questions about what channels are coming. I will be unavailable for a few days so please be patient if you send me an email and i do not respond.
skarmali 04-30-07, 01:19 PM I took up Antneye on his offer to find out more about my own building (in Chelsea), and I'd just like to say thanks for putting me in touch with the FIOS team.
Turns out my local Verizon office (on 18th street) is getting FIOS wired in July, and they're already in discussions with the management company of my building. (I lucked out a little here since I'm in a fairly large multi-unit building and they're a higher piority for Verizon).
Keeping my fingers crossed for FIOS availability later this year. Looks like they might start with data first before offering television.
Does anyone know what the status is of Verizon's television franchise negotiations with the city?
badasscat 05-03-07, 05:24 PM Yup, they're broadcasting.
They finally started working for me last night - only about 2 weeks late.
So far I have not been real happy with Verizon. Constant hiccups/dropouts/other problems on a variety of HD channels (doesn't seem to affect SD), these blacked out new channels for 2 weeks, a DVR that's getting noticeably slower the longer I use it, and a monthly bill that's $30 a month higher than I was quoted over the phone (I guess because they don't include taxes) and $40 more than I was paying with Cablevision for actually fewer channels.
I'm about ready to dump FiOS, quite honestly.

It is believed that VZ has to do their buildout before tv is offered. The city wants to avoid the problems the outer boroughs had when cable franchises were offered in the 1980's, when wealthier sections of town got great service while parts of Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, and even parts of Manhattan like the lower east side and most of the island above 110th St had to wait for what seemed forever for rudimentary cable tv.
Plus, of course, they have to deal with the multiple dwelling issue. Lots of building managers and boards really don't want or don't have room for another course of wires in their buildings.
POWERFUL 05-04-07, 12:41 AM Doesn't that cable need replacement eventually? It's old cable that usually rats have chewed through or it not that great cable to begin with (RG-59 came in my old apartment).

Something doesn't sound right. I switched from Cablevision (northern NJ). I've had zero technical issues, much better SD picture, better DVR performance and more channels for less $. The only thing I miss is SNY-HD, MSG-HD and News12.
You should definitely have them resolve your technical issues. As far as the cost, I guess that varies because of what you had vs now have etc.

I'm starting to hear rumors of "MoJo" HD being added to Fios soon ... Anyone know anything particular ?? ...
Rikerspharm 07-05-07, 09:56 PM I've had my FIOS internet connection about eight months here in Pound Ridge.
The tech that installed it led me to believe FIOS TV was imminent. He said that "the equipment was already here." Still no TV! Anyone hear anything. I've called Verizon and all they say is it is coming shortly. The town attorney stated that the town had already approved the franchise. What could be holding it up?
FIOS TV was installed in only one area of central Westchester (Greenburgh)and that was about eight months ago. I've not heard of any other towns getting TV service since. Verizon has started advertising FIOS TV without mentioning where it's available. Anyone out there have any info?
Is there a current list of what cities in NY are able to get FIOS TV?

Any one have Staten Island News on Fiostv?
SI has to wait with the rest of NYC ... NYC government has to approve the franchise agreement. That means government channels, cable to schools, all sorts of little things that are part of any cable television franchise agreement - especially a city-wide agreement like NY.
Verizon is trying to wire as much of the city as possible to appease the city ... since the last time the city was wired for cable tv the least affluent parts of the city got it last ... government doesn't want to have that happen again for the most part.

Speaking of Cablevision, I saw a new commercial trumpeting IO now having 40 HD channels. Sounds like they've jumped ahead of FIOS for now. Anybody know if FIOS is adding to their HD lineup anytime soon? They're fierce competitors in the NY area so I'd expect them to respond sooner than later. Or . . . maybe not.

They just added "VOOM" - a package they offered separately a few years back. While I always welcome new HD content, IMO, most of the channels are useless. Check out the cablvision forum for more info. It sounds great in the commercial though, doesn't it !

These are the channels that E* added several months back. I've never seen them, but from what I've read and heard, I would have to agree that most of them are pretty lame. As you point out though, it does sound great in the commercials and I imagine VZ will have to respond pretty quickly. Do you think we'll see more HD from them maybe in sept.?

Firehawk295 08-15-07, 12:32 PM Haverstraw approves FiOS TV franchise
News Brief

Wed Aug 15, 12:00 AM ET
Journal News - Westchester County NY
The Haverstraw Board of Trustees has approved an agreement authorizing Verizon to offer its FiOS TV service in the village. The board OK'd the video franchise on Monday night. With Haverstraw, 53 New York communities have approved video franchises for Verizon.
In Rockland, the communities of Spring Valley, Chestnut Ridge, Airmont, Piermont, Orangetown, Clarkstown, Nyack, South Nyack, Upper Nyack, Grandview-on-Hudson, West Haverstraw and the town of Haverstraw have approved FiOS TV service. Verizon also has video franchises in the Westchester communities of Yonkers, Bronxville, Scarsdale, Mount Pleasant, Mount Vernon, North Castle, White Plains, Rye Brook, Irvington, Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Tarrytown, Eastchester, Mount Kisco, Elmsford, Port Chester, Tuckahoe and Greenburgh.
cybertec 08-15-07, 08:02 PM I had FIOS internet installed here in Staten Island last week, I talked to the tech about the TV roll out.
Hmm, I cant wait to give TWC the boot.I gave TWC Cable the boot one year ago, and got Dish Network, and when Fios TV is available "have Fios Broadband for one year now" Dish will get the cancelation call, I have been told by Sept-Oct, we should have it.
oxfdblue 08-16-07, 07:14 PM Well, now it's Sept-Oct. That's just a few weeks away.
Back in April when I have FiOS broadband put in, I was told that tv was scheduled for June. A couple weeks back, I asked at a Verizon FiOS kiosk at the mall...the rep didn't know and said no one seems to know.
The sooner the better.
JBBO3314 08-25-07, 07:55 PM It seems to me by the time Fios gets it together everyone is gonna forget about it.
oxfdblue 08-26-07, 10:51 AM Nah... I am sure Verizon will make sure that we are flooded with flyers, tv commercials, phone calls, etc. reminding us that it is available.
The real problem is will I be the one signing up, or my great-great grandchildren?
Titand19 08-26-07, 03:52 PM I got notice that Verizon would be coring an interior wall for the Fios. They did it last week, and on thursday new wiremold was up over the old which TWC had put in. I'm on 1st ave and 4th St.
SnellKrell 08-26-07, 04:20 PM What I understand is that Verizon is still waiting for the go ahead from NYC to provide television service.
They well may be working on buildings getting things ready - and when they are, only providing services otherthan television.
Believe me, Verizon wants our money - the company has been pulling fiber under the streets of Manhattan for quite a while.
They need, at least in Mannattan and for other high rise areas, a deal cut with the apartment building owners and then need the city's permission to turn the television signal.
jimkell 09-12-07, 10:10 AM Just called Verizon about these 2 HD channels being down since Monday. Apparently the uplink providers facility had a fire. They were able to restore the SD versions of these channels only - no time frame for the HD. I was wondering how widespread this problem is? I'm in Bergen County, NJ. I want my Yankee games in HD for the home stretch !! Watching SD is painful.

I am also in Bergen Co. and a Ranger fan .FIOS does not presently have msghd. Since Jimbo Dolan own the team/network, he is VERY reluctant to share withn the competition. However, maybe he will reconsider if Verizon offers to pay off that $11mil judgment ! BTW, although not nearly as good as HD, the SD fios MSG is watchable and much better than cablevision (switched last March)

Anyone have a timeline on the Flushing Queens area. Just moved in and hate to feed the TWC monsterHey neighbor.
Funny, I just saw a commercial for FIOS. They made it seem like UTOPIA, and I’m not talking about the road.
So I called the number on the screen (877-444-3467) to see if they had an answer to the same question that you're asking. Unfortunately, the CSR was a complete moron. I think the best thing to do is to call during normal business hours and hope to get someone from this side of the planet on the phone.
Recently there was a Veizon crew doing work on my block and I asked the technician if he knew. He said that Flushing hasn’t even been set up with the proper infrastructure yet. He suggested the more people that called the better the chances were that Verizon would respond. He said to get all of my neighbors to call and hound them.
Then there’s still that other little detail regarding the city signing an agreement.
Guys, I'm in Bergen County, NJ... And for me, it's a MUST to get MSG in HD... Does Verizon FIOS currently offer this channel, if not, do they plan on adding it anytime soon?

As long as Jimmy Dolan is breathing, and the feds don't legislate it, you will not see MSG or FSNY-HD on FiOS. Why give up your competitive advantage to your arch enemy?
sansri88 10-19-07, 09:07 PM Well, since there's no SD forum, I guess I'll post here.
What South Asian channels does Verizon carry? Do they have SET Asia and Zee TV? FiOS is coming to my township (Woodbridge Twp., NJ) in early 2008, so I want to know what their lineup is before I consider switching. I already know I will switch to internet and phone service from them. Just the TV service is iffy at this point.
Can anyone confirm if FIOS is available in North Plainfield NJ? I talked to a FIOS rep at the Bridgewater Commons Mall the other day and he said some sections of North Plainfield are lit already and others are coming online.
I can't find any evidence to support this claim. I'm stoked for this service!! I am mad at D* because 4 years ago I spent $2000 on 3 HD receivers (mpeg-2) that are now only good for OTA stations and about 10 HD-Lite D* stations. I just need this service.... I'm an HD addict:D
The wesite and verizon CS still say unavailable??
Anyone think Fios is going to get Howard stern on demand??
That's the one channel I'm missing out on :(
Are there HD movies on demand? Dosen't seem so...
Anyone know when we're getting more HD content??
I'm in long island, ny..
UnnDunn 11-27-07, 12:12 AM Verizon has announced they plan to add up to 100 HD channels in 2008, starting with around 40 in April.
moodyman 11-30-07, 09:25 AM I just signed up for Verizon's Triple package..I currently have Cablevision and live in Holbrook, Long Island. I was offered the $95/month package with the free HDTV TV. I had heard about an $85/month package with no TV. The Verizon rep wondered where I had heard about it (I forgot) but verified that it is a legitimate deal. That deal also includes a $200 AMEX gift card. He also offered me a $50 TARGET gift card to offset the activation fee. I got their movie package and HD DVR box for $20 month (normally $13 and $15 month). I'm scheduled for install on DEC 10th.
Some things which I didn't know which are bothering me:
-Verizon DOES NOT carry MSNBC. WTF??? Some kind of exclusive deal with Cablevision..and nobody knows for how long.
-I currently have 3 other TV's in the house. With FIOS each TV WILL NEED its own box at $5/month each. Without a box the TV will only get some really BASIC programming...local channels and some PBS..Thats it!!
This really has me irked and I am actually considering cancelling the FIOS install.....

Sadly this will be true regardless of your service provider come 2009. all analog signals are being shut off by FCC mandate. Verizon is just doing it a few months sooner than most.

I don't NEED extra boxes for my other TV's. Cablevision boxes are only needed for premium pay channels..with FIOS you need them regardless.....
It does seem like a great deal.....I guess I was more bothered by the fact that they didn't let on to the fact I would need additional boxes until I spent an hour with them going over their services and signing the bottom line..I'm also a little troubled by what I'm reading on the Verizon FIOS forum at broadbandreports.com. A lot of people are irked by the media guide software bugs along with its associated DVR problems....
Anyway...I'll probaly go through with the install..I'll report back on my experience.
I don't NEED extra boxes for my other TV's. Cablevision boxes are only needed for premium pay channels..with FIOS you need them regardless....You say that a Set Top Box is needed from cablevision for the premium channels, or I guess, the unscrambled channels, but don’t you still need a STB for each HD TV set (with CV) for the HD channels?

Is that the experience of others as well.
I currently have TW and considering switching to FiOs mainly because I'm sick and tire of compression artifacts (macro blocking) particularly evident in sports programming and fast action movies.
I heard due to FiOs' extra bandwidth they don't compress their signal as much.
If PQ is about the same I'm gonna reconsider switching.
Can more people comment on this?

PQ is stellar. They do not add any compression over what the channel is delivering to them. They simply pass it on as they get it.

antneye 12-25-07, 10:47 PM PQ is phenomenal......no additional compression. Simply a pass through of what the provder sends them.
milan03 12-25-07, 11:21 PM PQ is phenomenal......no additional compression. Simply a pass through of what the provder sends them.
I've heard its phenomenal, but some providers send 45mbs streams to the affiliates, and that is usually waay to big for consumers. Put it this way... OTA maxes out at 19.8mbs, but highest bitrate OTA ive seen was CBS at about 18mbs. That is still not enough to remove some occasional MPEG-2 blockiness on some fast paced football games etc especially on 50"+ 1080 HDTV's.
Now how does FioS feed compare to OTA feed? Does anyone actually know the average bitrates through FIoS?
Thanks a lot!

This is interesting information actually, thank you for sharing it. I've noticed on CV, that CBS is one of the channels that gives the best PQ! Most of the movie channels (SHO, HBO, STARZ, MAX) are way below par in terms of PQ...
I already have FIOS internet, so it wouldn't be a big deal to switch to FIOS TV. The one thing that really bothers me is how I can make additional storage space for movies. I currently have a 500 GB add-on hard drive for my CV box. Is there any way at all to set up additional storage for the Verizon boxes?

I'd be capping all that to my PC.
QueueCumber 12-26-07, 01:14 PM I'd be capping all that to my PC.
Can you transfer or record the Verizon FIOS HD content to an independent hard drive? Or, can you just copy it to the computer via other means? The idea of having to turn on my computer to store shows is over the top in my situation, so I would like to have a more convenient solution if there are any.
What method would you use to "cap" the shows via Verizon FIOS? I'm trying to figure out what my best solution would be if I switch so I can compare it to my current situation where I have a 500 GB external drive hooked up to the CV box.
Thanks.

wmurpht 01-02-08, 02:36 PM Has anyone had any problems with not receiving the major broadcast channels (CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, etc..) in HD when plugging the fios coax cable directly into a tv with a QAM tuner? All I get in a black screen with audio.
I was able to view all HD clear QAM channels when using Cablevision.

Call technical support. You should be able to view the HD locals.
POWERFUL 02-01-08, 10:11 AM What's standard equipment for Fios boxes? Please include the SD DVR, SD boxes, and HD boxes?
POWERFUL 02-03-08, 11:05 PM Let me rephrase myself. I want to record the Fios signal using some firewire equipment, does any of the HD boxes allow that?
AndyHDTV 02-12-08, 11:22 AM I have checked with my engineering department and unfortunately your address is not currently qualified for Fios Service at this time. The East 30th Street wirecenter which provides you with dial tone is not yet offering the service. FIOS is tentatively scheduled to be deployed within the East 30th Street wire center in 2009.
I want to apologize for any inconvenience that you have experienced.
QueueCumber 02-12-08, 12:28 PM Does FIOS allow and support any audio output on their units other than HDMI?
Also, do they have an output to add extra Hard Disc storage? How much storage space do the units have out of the box? How much can be added via external drives?
Last, what kind of MPEG does it use? MPEG4?
Thanks.
ripple420 02-16-08, 11:58 AM According to my Town Supervisor, it's going to be a while until FiOS TV is here.
This is for Somers in Westchester which is mostly served out of the Yorktown CO (914-248-xxxx)
I was hopeful when I saw new fiber being hung but I think they dropped what they were doing to take care of Yonkers :(
I have recently reached out to Verizon regarding their plans in our area and we met with them a few weeks ago. They have started to install FIOS in Somers and we have requested a map of the areas to be serviced this year. It will be wired but FIOS TV won’t initially be available. They will not begin franchise negotiations until the Town is 50% wired with FIOS because once a franchise is entered into they have only 5 years to finish the Town. We are encouraging them to proceed expeditiously to create an alternative to Cablevision and Comcast.
QueueCumber 02-16-08, 02:05 PM We have FIOS in our area, just not FIOS TV. I've been using Verizon FIOS as my ISP for around two years already...

Rikerspharm 02-26-08, 03:53 PM I've had Fios Internet service in Pound Ridge for the past 18 months or so and it's been great. Would love to have Fios TV if only to dump C****Vision. But, can't get a straight answer from Verizon when they will make it available. The installer of my internet lines stated that the TV equipment had been sitting in the Bedford substation for quite awhile. Would think that if the area already has FIOS internet, TV would be a snap, franchise agreements notwithstanding. But the town attorney thought they had approved Verizon?? QueueCumber, where are you?

Everywhere else could take some more time. A lot more time...

City reaches cable TV agreement with Verizon
by Associated Press
Tuesday April 29, 2008, 11:27 AM
New York City residents may soon be able to choose their cable television provider.
The city says it has reached agreement with Verizon for a cable television franchise contract. It calls for increased channel capacity and funding for all public, educational and governmental channels.
Most city households now have only one cable provider: Time Warner, which covers Manhattan, Queens, western Brooklyn and Staten Island; or Cablevision, which serves the Bronx and eastern Brooklyn. Verizon would offer cable service in all five boroughs.
The agreement must be approved by the city's Franchise and Concession Review Committee.
Verizon says its advanced fiber cable network would reach 30 percent of households by 2008, 50 percent by 2010 and all households by 2014.
hi I live in far rockaway at 1261 central ave by beach 12th st.Is my building being wired for fios or going o be wired any time soon. thank you for your help.
I will be unavailable for a few days so please be patient if you send me an email and i do not respond.[/QUOTE]

tough one. VZ has to negotiate with each landlord to get inside and pull the fiber upstairs.
let your landlord know you want it.
seamus21514 07-02-08, 11:12 PM Rumor has it that FiOS TV will begin taking orders in SI in mid-July, with the first installs on 7/30. I can't wait.

They'll start taking orders once NYS PSC signs off on the video franchise agreement. That is expected to happen sometime this month.
ripple420 07-04-08, 10:46 AM Some good news for us folks in the northern burbs, but the last line is so true (not anytime soon):
From this week's North County News http://ncnlocal.com/local_towns/yorktown.asp
Yorktown in talks with Verizon for cable service
By Art Cusano
Yorktown residents may soon have a choice as to what cable company they can use.
According to Yorktown Councilman Nick Bianco, the town is in talks with Verizon to sign a contract for FiOS cable service, an all fiber-optic cable service which would provide an alternative to Cablevision, currently the sole cable provider in Yorktown.
“We are still in negotiation with Verizon,” Bianco said. “Our contract with Cablevision has expired and we’re on a month-to-month basis with them.”
Bianco said there were some “outstanding issues” that needed to be discussed with Verizon before a contract could be signed and that the town was holding closed-door negotiations to work them out.
Town Attorney John Buckley confirmed that the town was indeed in negotiations with Verizon in addition to Cablevision.
“We’re speaking primarily with Verizon,” Buckley said.
“This is a competitive choice,” Bianco said. “The citizens should be able to choose.”
Dennis Tate, a member of the Yorktown cable advisory committee and a part-time employee of Cablevision, said Verizon is not available in some parts of town and would probably not be available anytime soon.
Tate said that the FiOS lines have only been installed in about 40 percent of the town, and the company would not have to provide service to the entire town before signing a contract.
“They would have five years to get the whole town [hooked up],” Tate said
He said that when the town started getting DSL service through Verizon several years ago, people in his neighborhood didn’t get access to the service until much later than other areas.
“Two years went by and they finally installed the software,” Tate said. “So somebody’s going to get the short end of the stick.”
Tate also fears that the talks with Verizon will hurt the town’s relationship with Cablevision, the lone current cable provider in the town.
Tate also said Verizon subscribers would lose channel 12, which provides local news and that although touted as competition to Cablevision, Verizon’s prices are actually more expensive.
Tate complained that the cable advisory committee hadn’t met in months and he had been unaware of the board’s talks with Verizon.
“We’ve not been kept up to date,” said Frank McVetty, another board member.
It wasn’t until after a town board meeting in June that members of the committee were invited to attend that they found out about current negotiations.
Tate and McVetty contended that the appointed co-chairs of the committee, Bill Rubin and Maria Lamonica DeSimone, have held meetings with the town board without them. The two were unable to be reached at press time.
“We have been in negotiations for a television franchise in Yorktown,” confirmed John Bonomo, a director for media relations for Verizon. “They’re one of the last towns in northern Westchester and we’re eager to get them.”
Bonomo said the price for a package that includes telephone, television and Internet was about the same price as the one Cablevision offers. He also said high definition channels are included in the price of the package.
“We have just over 30 high definition channels right now, and by the end of the year we plan to have all the available major HD programming,” Bonomo said.
According to Bonomo, New York law requires franchises to have complete coverage within five years of signing a contract. He said he was unable to give an average time in which that usually occurs because FiOS is a fairly new product and no town has reached complete coverage yet.
Bonomo said that there is a termination fee for getting out of a one- or two-year contract, it was a common practice and the only reason the other provider in town (Cablevision) didn’t have one was that it had no competition.
No new discussions were set with Verizon at press time; however, Bianco cautioned that the negotiations would not be finished anytime soon.
“It’s not coming tomorrow,” Bianco said.
ChetaMorton 07-09-08, 12:17 AM Looked everywhere. Any idea when/if Verizon's FIOS TV will roll out in Little Falls, NJ? Thanks Alley
I just did a search for my address in Bergen Beach, Brooklyn and FIOS TV is available. Can anyone confirm FIOS TV is available in NYC? The sales dept is closed.
cmattoni 07-15-08, 11:29 PM Not that this is news to many, but it appears Westchester (North White Plains at least) is due for a channel shuffle on 7/24. The guide indicates most channels are set to "move".
I have not analyzed the pattern, but I'm assuming it includes some *new* HD channels. Looks like the HD's will be in with all the rest of the packages rather than on their own.

It is not. You might be able to get FIOS internet but not FIOS TV.

Could their address-check system be flawed? Perhaps they have begun taking orders because it will be available very soon?

P.S This is the message I get when I put in my address:
Great News!
Both FiOS TV and Internet are available.
Order FiOS TV Premier
and enjoy 200+ channels
of 100% all digital TV
for just $47.99/month.
They sure as hell think its available in my area.
Post the results tomorrow, I’m interested in what the say. My guess is that you have FIOS internet available and the TV they are offering is Direct TV.
As far as I know, you are in the city and there is no franchise agreement signed, therefore the FIOS TV is not available yet in NY City.
Hey, for your sake, I hope I am wrong.

Well I'm guessing its a screwup with the address checker or I could be the first one to sign up for FIOS in NYC!
seamus21514 07-16-08, 11:32 AM I got a letter in SI with a phone number for tv appointments...I have heard that people have appointments for late august. This means FiOS is indeed starting to deploy TV in NYC.

Well the rumors are true! My appointment is Saturday, August 2nd. Apparently that is the earliest because they roll out the service the 30th or 1st or something.
If anyone is wondering, no problems requesting cablecards for my TiVo S3.
They also gave me $10 off my bill a month on top of the 'Triple Play' bundle savings and waived the $29.99 activation fee.
They also gave me a 30$ Premium channel package that includes all of the premium channels instead of doing the 22$ 'HBO/Max' pkg and the $15 'Movie' pkg seperately.
She told me I'd be paying $140 total tax included. I was paying $150 total for CV.
oxfdblue 07-16-08, 04:21 PM Just to confirm what a couple of others have said. Fios TV is available in certain parts of New York City.
They do still need state approval, but that is seen as a formality and will be granted quite soon. (I forget the date, but it is this month.)
I'm on Staten Island and have an install appointment for August 20th.
Now, if only the Dolans would die, go into exile, go broke, get sent to jail.... anything....then maybe we'll also see MSNBC and MSG HD on Fios as well.
oxfdblue 07-16-08, 04:26 PM NEWS!!!
The New York State Public Services Commission approved Verizon's franchise agreement with the City of New York for television service TODAY....July 16, 2008!!
