So my gf just bought me the LN-S4696D for xmas...and it is friggin amazing. It looks great. I was wondering what some of you have setup for your settings picture wise for HD TV / DVDs/ and the xbox360

I'm currently using the standard settings and it looks great....but I know it can look even better...

I was playing Gears of War for about 6 hrs lasnight on it... what a difference this tv makes

Yep, 4695 here and wondering what picture settings you guys use for 360, PS3 Blu-ray, Toshiba A2-HD HD-DVD. Thanks if you can help!

Just opened the LNS4695. Can I really not play 360/PS3 on one side of PIP and have my cablebox/dvr on the other? I'm currently hooked up with component cables for both. Any help would be great. Also any good custom settings for sports?

Yeah, isn't this just the stupidest? You can only PIP the ant/cbl sources. So much for having it "your way". While PIP isn't a big deal for me, I shook my head and sighed when I realized this limitation (as well).

Can anyone verify that multi-channel audio gets passed through from HDMI input out the Toslink port? Let me explain further in case this isn't immediatly clear.

I am trying to get 5.1 out of all of my digital feeds. My relevant components:
-Sammy LNS4696D
-Tivo S3 HD
-Sony 5.1 receiver with optical input & Progressive DVD

Data flow goes like this:
Digital cable --coax cable--> TivoS3 --hdmi--> Sammy --Toslink--> Sony receiver.

I am only getting stereo sound coming out of my speakers and not getting the 5.1 channels I expect. If I play a DVD in the receiver I DO get multi-channel sound so I know the receiver and speakers are setup correctly.

This could be many issues and really be an issue with any number of the components in the chain but I wanted to see if anyone can confirm conceptually this will work and also practically they have theirs working (Hate to find yet ANOTHER limitation in this TV).

Some questions I was wondering:
Digital cable (comcast) does send 5.1 sound, right?
Tivo will obviously preserve multi-channel sound, right?
The TV should be feasible as the AV "switchbox" in the method I am using, right?
The receiver should see incoming "digital" 5.1 from the toslink cable and decode it, correct?

Thanks for the eyes on this,
Chris

You all say overscan but when I feed a 1920x1080 @ 60 Hz I get under scan of about 1/4" on either side and less on the top and bottom. I am using a DVI to HDMI connection from a ATI X1900XT with the 16x9 mode set on the tv. If I use any other refresh rate other then 60 Hz I get overscan. Just thought I would put that out there.
I am using Nvidia 7800GS and at 1920x1080@60Hz and it is the worst overscan of all resolutions. The only other option at that resolution I have is 24Hz (Interlaced). I wonder if ATI cards don't have overscan issues whereas Nvidia does?

Does anyone else have their ATI card working properly (or even underscanned) in 1:1 mode?

ATI software has even fewer options for hooking your card up to an HD set. I don't have this TV but I have both ATI and Nvidia cards. The Nvidia control panel offers several more options for scaling, and a lot of advanced timing features if you know what you're doing with them.

So, in other words.... If you can't make the magic happen with the Nvidia card, an ATI card won't be any different and offers fewer options to tweak.

Wow, this was one of the main reasons I got this set. Can I take a coax out of my cablebox/dvr and into the TV? I'm not home or I would try. I really don't want to take this set back, I really like it and got a great price.

does the 96D have overscan in videogames through component?
Does it have overssan in DVD's in component or VGA?

thanks that's all I need to know.

choekstr, no wonder. You have to run a connection from that TiVo directly to the AVR to get multi-channel sound. HDMI is a 2 way protocol, so if the first device it hits can't decode DD 5.1, it will only send 2 channel PCM. Putting an audio out on the TV can be useful in certain circumstances, making it optical is a total waste.

Not sure what folks are expecting from the PIP on the set; it basically does 2 of the inputs on the set. I have a cable box, so all I can do is that device and my DVD in the little window. MUCH more useful is my dual tuner cable box, it has it's own PIP and I can watch 2 different channels (assuming one is not being used for an active recording).

I'm new and have been researching this TV religiously for the past week. One tv owner showed pictures of Ghost Recon 2 on his old CRT tv and his Samsung. The Samsung actually had less overscan then the CRT. The CRT cut out the game's hud almost completely while the Samsung only cut off the outer edges of the hud.

That said, PC owners with nvidia graphic cards have been able to use nvidia software to adjust the overscan...

I need some help. I've searched about 50 pages of this forum in the past day and haven't been able to find a solid answer on how the Picture-in-Picture works on the 4696. Can someone explain the limitations?

I use PIP all the time for football on SAturday and Sundays. On my current non-hdtv, I usually watch one game on a component feed from my digital box and the small picture via regular cable or composite feed. Would this work with the Samsung? or if I had two hdtv boxes could I use both for PIP?

I am wanting a 1080p tv with good PIP options and I know this tv doesn't have great options but I am in Canada and the Mitsubishi's aren't available here.

I had decided to wait till the 07 models come out to see if they would be better but then Futureshop decided to drop the price of the Samsung 4696D by a big $900 and am now back to thinking of buying this tv. I also have ants in my pants after receiving a ton of futureshop gift cards for christmas

I think the cloudiness occurs in almost all LCD sets. I don't think there is anything that can be done about it at the moment. Perhaps a few years down the line it will be figured out...

I have a cloudy spot in the bottom left corner of my 4696D....just have to get used to it I guess.

Ok, here's where things stand. After much screen massaging and laying the tv flat, I have the Mura Effect on my 4th replacement Samsung LCD down to one little light cloud in the middle right of the screen. It's only really noticeable when playing a really dark level on an XBOX360 game. I think I can live with this...AS LONG as it does not get worse.

My question is this- have any of you ever gotten rid of most of your clouds and seen them come BACK over time? That is my biggest fear. I have to decide soon within my 30 day guarantee whether or not to exchange this set for the Sharp Aquos. Many say the Sharp has its own issues, like banding. I don't wish to exchange one bad apple for another....but I really love the overall picture of the Samsung. As long as the clouds don't get worse over time, I just might stick with my Samsung.

Since Sony/Samsung seem to share the same screen, I thought you guys would know best about how this clouds issue plays out over weeks and months. So PLEASE...tell me "they don't come back".

Can't even tell when playing xbox 360, and xbox hd dvd movies. Can only tell when you run PC cause the start button is cropped etc. So long as you're not running your PC through HDMI it's fine. Honestly it looks fine using vga connection, even though it's analog.

Sounds like it's in shop mode. Forgot how you turn it off though without having to access the service menu.

Oh, the other thread says how: just hold down the menu button on the side of the tv for 5-7 sec and it should change it to home mode.

You turn off shop mode by holding down the Menu button on the set itself (not the remote) for 5 seconds.

Shop mode is what they set it to in the store, so if peeps mess with the settings of the tv, it will automaticaly reset itself so it won't look all crappy if peeps set the screen all dark or colors all funky etc.

Tune into something with a signal

then turn off tv, then hit mute 1 8 2 power.

Wait like 10 sec and a menu should pop up.

Can anyone explain what are the options for color correction in the service menu?
I have been thinking of modifying the parameters in the service menu to get better color decoding, but not willing to play around without knowing what I am modifying.

Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure if the xx96 is different than the xx95, and not sure how Riverside gets full PIP options but this is what I have come to conclude after playing with my set for the last few days.

The PIP gives you a few screen options with size and number of screens. The limitations however are pretty obvious. You can watch any input you want on the main screen, however on the 2nd screen, you can only view over the air cable (with an antenna) or cable through a coax cable. You will be fine if you are watching football from a digital box on the main you can get an external antenna or you can split your coax cable (non-HD) out of the wall and have a direct connection.

If you want both in HD you will have to get an HD over the air Antenna and be limited to those channels (probably OK with local football games). My main complaint is I cannot play PS3/360 and have my DVR/HD hooked up to the other screen (in HD). Or PS3 and DVD, or DVD and Computer screen, or Computer screen and DVR/HD.

Sorry for the long winded response.

Thanks for the response. I guess i'm SOL cause there are no over the air HD channels in my area right now. That really sucks cause I wanted this tv and the Mitsubishi isn't available or I'd get it.

I guess I'll hafta wait till the new models come out and hopefully Sony, Samsung and/or Sharp will release a good picture TV with the bells and whistles to boot.

I'm still frustrated the mitsubishi isn't sold around here cause I want a TV now. Oh well. There should be information on the 07 models when CES 07 begins.

Also, I was able to find, on page 51 of the 4096/4696 owners manual from Samsung's site, a chart that lists what does and doesn't work as far as PIP goes. Basically confirms everything you said. If you use HDMI 1080p, the only thing you can get in the small window is over the air/cable signal.

The samsung 95d and the xbr2 and i was surprised is a very minimal problem really but it bugs. i would really never noticed it if i didn't really concentrated on the difference its really hard to tell but for a high end model like 96d samsung they should of eliminate the overscan and made it 1:1 mapping.

Yeah it's only like 1/2" cut off, but that 1/2" on a pc = the bottom tray and start menu and clock etc. Can't even tell watching movies or playing games. Most games designed to compensate for overscan anyhow I'm sure, since the majority of people don't have hdtv.

Is this overscan problem that bad or just a minor thing? Also if I was to buy this set right now would I get one with this problem or has Samsung found a way to fix it? I'm looking into buying a 1080p set and right now I'm deciding between the Samsung LN-S4096D and the the Sony KDL-40V2500 (XBR2/3 models too expensive for my budget). If this helps any my main use for this TV would be PS3/Xbox360 gaming, HD sports and the occasional Blu-Ray movie here and there using my PS3.

Darth, I tried to find an image that a Samsung owner posted that showed his Samsung LCD actually had less overscan then his old CRT. I couldn't find it but I know it's around this forum somewhere.

Most games compensate for overscan since all TVs are different and have different amounts of overscan. Thus, videogame makers compensate by making sure all the action in the game takes part in a certain area of the screen that is guaranteed to not get cut out of the picture.

The problem with ghost recon 2 is that they had that stupid hud outline and I think it was cut off on many tvs. It was cut off on my non-hd CRT tv but didn't affect gameplay at all.

Just did some experimenting (I have almost no situations where I want to do PIP from the display, but numerous reasons to use both tuners of my STB)... indeed some combinations of separate input sources don't play nice (gads, I see NO reason why, frankly!). I found that if my main screen was the STB via component, I couldn't get OTA on the PIP screen. However, if I swapped my STB connection back to HDMI, I got both OTA AND my DVD via component working in the PIP. My chart does show HDMI & Component able to function as 2 parts of a PIP scenario. Looks like there is an actual difference between the 92 series and a 95/96 series. Absolutely there are some very odd limitations in it's PIP function.

Well, I know I said I wasn't gonna buy the Samsung 4696 but I pulled the trigger this morning on a deal too good to pass up. PIP may be limited but I decided the PIP combinations will work well enough for me to get it. It basically does everything my current CRT does.

More options would be nice but for the price I got, I decided it wasn't worth waiting till the Summer for the newer models that would have jacked up prices upon release.

Congrats man its a beautiful tv... I just got my 11ft HDMI/DVI cables in the mail from Monoprice.com that were $11 shipped...i cant wait to hook em up to my cable tonight...

I'm currently going to be running my HD cable into the HDMI port
my series 2 tivo(lifetime service) through my S video... and I think im going to buy a cable splitter and run a cable to the back of the tv for the PIP...
Oh and my 360 through component...im debating on getting the DVI even though some people say its a little fishy

On page 102 of this thread someone posted pretty good Custom display options that im currently using.

There are a few other minor differences. The 4096 has
- an USB port on the side panel for displaying images (the 4095 has a USB port too, but it's on the back and only for service)
- a composite video port on the side panel (the 4095 has SVideo I believe)
- two Firewire (1394) ports (on back)
- a nicer (IMHO) clear 'sound deflector' at the bottom (the 4095's is silver)
- an oval foot instead of the 4095's rectangular one

Except for the CableCard slot you mentioned, most people will find these differences negligible.

MY LNS4695 is RUINED!!! I was trying to set the calibration settings and I accidently clicked the top option and instead of exiting pressed one of the side arrows and the TV went haywire! The screen went while (i could still hear ESPN) while flicking and static all over the screen...i tried to shut the TV off but it wouldn't after several seconds...when I finally put the TV back on, it looked horrible...so I did a hard RESET of the picture and now its wishy-washy gray, i'm getting an immense cloud and obvious horizontal lines across the screen...the calibration settings I did change before have stayed the same..so i'm not sure if i did a COMPLETE hard reset, but it did go back to Shop Mode asking me the initial orientation...before I had AIR, this time I chose cable...even though I use Component 1 for cable and Component 2 for Xbox 360...when changing stations or putting a 360 game on, the black backgrounds are now obviously GRAY and cloudy and just horrendous...I should have never touched anything...the HD before was beautiful and I guess this is the price you pay for being greedy...

I'm AN IDIOT!!! Of course I'm on the phone with Sammy support and of course they have no clue.....

Can anyone help? Do I reset the TV again???

Another PIP problem. Can you swap audio? I know you can't swap the picture, but can't find the audio swap. I really love this TV, but this is dumb.

From all my reading, apparently there is no audio swap. I agree it's dumb but I have the same problem with my Panasonic Tau CRT so when I get my 4696 delivered next week, it won't be a feature I miss since it's not a feature I ever had.

First of all, your TV is not ruined. You can fix it, but it'll take a bit of work.

You need to display a black&white checkerboard pattern (such as the 16-field ANSI checkerboard) and repeat the accidental calibration ON THE INPUT WHERE IT HAPPENED (there are three discrete settings -- all digital, all component, and both composite).
The right way to do this is with a pattern generator at 720p. However, since the picture is already ruined, you can try a DVD (if your DVD player can display images, it's even easier- just download the JPEG).

The TV resets its contrast and white balance when you execute calibration. That's why it's so horrible now.

See this post: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9231317#post9231317
And here's what the pattern looks like (the actual pattern used has more fields I believe, but the 16-field one works too -- use the black/white, not grey):
http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_13_2/feature-article-contrast-ratio-5-2006-part-1.html

This should get you close to where you were (no color shift and good contrast).

one button press for pip. 8 button presses if you then want to swap the audio and like 10 or 12 if you want to acually move or change the size of the pip. between that and the lack of pip sources it's only a little better than no picture and picture at all

imho of coarse

Would a Harmony remote make the access to PIP, the screen sizes and audio easier?

What you do is this:

First of all, what source were you watching when you hit calibrate on accident. There's pc, hdmi, av, dtv i think, or is it just 3. Anyhow only the source you were on got messed up. The calibration target should state which source you are currently editing.

Anyhow based on your post, you messed up your settings for the "composite" source. Go to the calibration target menu, and on your xbox switch it to non hd ( there should be a HDTV/TV switch on the 360 composite cable itself) and change the source of the tv to AV. Make sure the yellow component cable is plugged into the tv too. The colors should all be looking proper etc. Copy down these numbers, then change the source to composite again, and change your xbox back to HDTV mode. Change all the numbers here to the ones that were listed at the AV screen. While you are inputing these numbers, you will see your picture improve as you continue to change em. When you are all done the pic should look fine again. Since you are changing all the numbers, you might as well fiddle with them till you get the picture looking how you want. When you're all finished tweaking then exit and chose reset to save your settings.

Anyways here's my numbers using my mode: PC source

cvd contrast 128
cvd bright 47

regtaget adc4 55
reg taget adc3 52
reg taget adc2 48

reg pga2 197
reg pga3 197
reg pga4 197

red offset 64
green offset 76
blue offset 76

red gain 77
green gain 87
blue gain 91

These numbers might look crappy on your tv though, is why you should copy the numbers from yoru tv's own sources. But theres DTV, SVideo, PC, Composite, HDMI sources plus more. It will say which source it's displaying at the calibration target screen. Most likely you jacked up your composite settings, so just use the settings from a different source.

I was watching on Component....same as Composite?

The screen I'm looking at now has a constant moving fuzz to it (if you REALLY look at it) and the blacks I had before are now more gray...I wasn't using DNIE and now if I don't, the screen really looks washed out, I also had to shut Gamma off to get black, and those horizontal lines across the screen are all too noticable if I don't do either...

I got a nice black color without it before...compared to Standard TV the picture isn't really that much more sharp as it was...

How do they cables work Jesse? I am always speculative of inexpensive cables. I wonder if they offer any quality. At the same time I wonder if the $100 cables offer much of a difference.

I need a DVI to HDMI for the moment cause my current cable box doesn't have HDMI. I don't wanna spend a lot cause I plan on getting a satellite receiver with HDMI in a few months. But a good, inexpensive DVI to HDMI would be nice to hold me over.

Cras...I hooked em up yesterday and come to find out my Timewarner Box was jacked up. I called TW and the guy told me that they have a lot of problems with the DVI port on the back of the box. So I switched to the HD DVR which has a HDMI port. I'm going to hook it up HDMI(cablebox) DVI to the back of my tv.

I also have a set of HDMI to HDMI cables coming that were about $9 shipped.

Their both gold platted... Monstercables are way over priced... im sure these will work fine but I will let ya know. Monoprice.com is where its at.

Well of all the TVs I've seen reviewed, and that I've SEEN, this one definitely seems to be the one with the least problems... but I still haven't bought it yet. The Overscan issue is a deal-breaker for me, as I WILL be using it as a monitor for my PC at LEAST semi-frequently.

So I called Samsung directly. I have one of their monitors that I've been happy with, so I figured what the hell, what do I have to lose?

They were surprisingly honest and forthright (at least to my thinking). I first asked them about their dead pixel policy, which is pretty decent IMO (FYI: even one lit pixel = replace, and up to 8 dead ones allowed, though if two are within 5mm, replace, though this is for the 40", so the distance is probably different depending on the size). Then I asked about the overscan issue, and the CS rep said there was nothing about it in the "reported problems" database, though he could 100% understand my concern with it. He said it would be raised with the engineers, and that somebody there would give me a call back about it in about a week with an answer, even knowing that I had not bought yet (I'll admit that I did try and emphasize the fact that I would NOT buy unless there is a resolution to the problem so that hopefully this becomes more of a "money issue"). This is also with them knowing that there is the firmware that DOES fix it overseas, so hopefully somebody somewhere in the process will realize this.

They could have been blowing smoke, and just saying the right things, but hey, I'd rather have the "we'll look in to it" response than the "oh ya, we'll have a fix... later" BS line. If I do get a response, I'll tell the forum what I found out on the issue, either way. Or if they don't phone back by the 8-9th, I'll tell that too.

If you can't tell the difference yourself, then it's not a problem. My opinion anyways. IF you are satisfied with what you see on the screen infront of you, keep it. It's a nice tv. If you don't like what you see, take it back.

But don't just take it back because other people have issues with the tv. Everyone is different and what bothers some people, won't bother others. Only take it back if you have an issue with the tv. And judging what you said, you can't see the difference, so you don't have an issue. :)

Does anyone experience the same issue?

when switched to 1080i upconversion, the screen flickers nonstop in a purple color. Even if a disk isn't in the player and just the Samsung "screensaver" is up the same thing happens.

This is annoying!!! I still have about 25 days left before I can return the set. Thanks!

tcwong: I have the same issue with the upconverting DVD player I purchased (Toshiba). 720p has no problems, but as soon as I move to the 1080i setting, I get a purple flicker on all screens, menus, and during the movie.

If you or anyone figures out the cause, and the fix (if any), please post it here!

Thanks,

Previous posts have mentioned that the most significant difference between the 95 and 96 is the lack of a CableCard slot on the former. However, I don't see any indication of a QAM tuner on the 95, at least in the limited literature I've checked. Is this also a difference?

I don't plan to get a cable box for this one (bedroom TV), so the QAM feature will be useful, even if I don't get ESPN HD. Comcast is a ripoff when it comes to CableCards, so I'm not considering that option, plus I've heard they can be pretty flaky.

I just spent a couple of hours over the past two days comparing the 4096 and XBR2, since one of our local stores is having a pretty good sale. I could not justify the $400 difference between those two models (it would be $600 for the XBR3). In fact, watching different TV shows and movies, I could not justify ANY difference between them in terms of PQ. The XBR has an extra HDMI slot, so I guess that's worth something, but not that much difference. I have a friend who swears the XBR's are significantly better than the ##96, and just spent $1000 more for the 52" model. In the end, it's what looks good to you and what you can justify as far as price.

I'm lying on my couch, browsing this forum using my laptop through the VGA cable on my set. No overscan whatsoever. It is Awesome. Very awesome, even.

No overscan issue whatsoever, so I'm not sure what all the hub-ub is about. My screen is incredible.. and I can play Civ IV in Full HD! Talk about cool.. hehe. Ok, so that's a bit nerdy. Anyway! Yeah, it's awesome. With Full HD it can be hard to read type, so I lower my res to 1024x768 when reading/typing.

ps. the one annoying thing about this set is that PIP is virtually useless. But.. my Cable box has PIP that's much more useful, so I don't mind so much.

So far as I Can tell, the PIP can only display air or cable, but I have my Cable connected to HDMI so all I see on the cable/air is noise.

That's great that the new PVR boxes come with PIP. Until today, I didn't realize that the latest Bell Expressvu HD PVR receiver, a receiver I will be getting in a few months, has it's own built-in PIP mode.

No it hasn't gone away. This only happens with the DVI to HDMI cable and it happens when I set it at 1920x1080 @ 60Hz not 1920x1080 @ 30Hz. I don't have a VGA cable to test the VGA input.

I just bought home a 4095d.. i do hope this is the right forum if not would someone please point me to the right one..

Just want to make sure that the tv is good and it has no problems or setting issues
if some can point me to settings/config .. I would certainly appreciate it

Does your cable box not at least have s-video? If not, the RCA jacks (composite) should be used. These will be better than coax. Coax is the lowest quality connection you can have.

HELP! I connected my PC to my Samsung 42" HDTV using a DVI to HDMI cable. The default setting was 1920x1080p @ 30Hz. There was a lot of flickering and the top and bottom portion of the image were cropped. I then changed it to 1920x1080p @ 60Hz. The image fit perfectly, but I got these white sparkles.
I'm pretty concerned about this. Is this normal behavior, or is it specific to this person? Anybody else here have news either way? Anybody who HAS this TV and connected it this way and it has or hasn't happened?

Also Flaming, which video card do you have? Settings? There is talk that some video cards "adapt" to the overscan, and thus perhaps the white is an artifact from the expansion/contraction (on both ends) process.

I dunno. But the more info, the better.

Sparkles over DVI/HDMI are usually the cable in my experience. Perhaps try a higher quality cable or a shorter one? I had them when I first tried to run a 10M cable to my projector..I got some Lindy cables and it was all fixed up.

I got a quick question. Just bought the LN-S4096D today and I'm loving every minute of it, I'm so glad I spent the extra cash for a 1080p set. My question is about "Game Mode" what exactly does it do and do you guys recommend on using it? I have my Xbox 360 and PS3 hooked up to it but haven't tested them yet was busy watching football and now I'm watching a HD movie. Also can anyone recommend some good picture settings for watching TV/movies and gaming. Thanks for the time.

I don't use Game Mode, even with my 360, just because I don't like the way it looks. It makes the colors too garish, and the contrast too high, crushing the blacks.

sounds like a cable bandwidth issue. Many cables cannot handle the bandwidth needed for 1080p/60. Notice that the sparklies go away at 30Hz refresh rate, which requires half the bandwidth of 60Hz. Sparklies are dropped/missing bits.

I am not sure what you cable arrangement is, whether you have a HDMI cable with a DVI adapter on one end or whether one end is terminated with a DVI connector and the other with HDMI. Whatever the case, purchase a better cable. Try one from the forum sponsors (RAM, Blue Jeans Cable, Monoprice). Make sure that is is rated for 1080p - some are only "guaranteed" for 1080i.

How long is your cable and who made it?

Secrets (www.hometheaterhifi.com) is performing HDMI cable tests. They have begun listing what manufacturers can pass a full 1080p video signal plus HDMI audio. You may be better off getting a HDMI cable and then adding a DVI adapter, if this is not what you are doing.

Not at all... remember, it's that "co-ax" that carries the raw signal from the cable head end, so it has every bit of "quality" you're going to get. Absent any "processing" you do in the cable box (like using settings to have the cable box scale content) PQ should be close to identical coming from the cable box as coming from the raw cable. Tuning various channels with that "raw cable" is a whole 'nother issue; some areas scramble everything but the local broadcast stations, some leave "cable" channels (above 13) wide open.

Using the term "RCA jacks" can also be very misleading. The lowest quality connection method, composite, usually yellow, uses RCA jacks. One of the two highest quality connections (component) also uses RCA jacks; but it uses three of them, red, green, blue typically.

It was my assumption that any signal coming out of the STB over coax would be RF, and not the original digital signal from the cable head. In that case, it would be the poorest quality. If I'm wrong about that and the coaxial connection passes the unprocessed digital signal, them I'm sorry to have mislead the OP. I have satellite, so I don't know for sure how a digital cable STB performs. To the OP, if while using the coax connection, you have to put the TV on channel 3 or 4 and change channels with the cable box, then what I said is still true. But if instead you set the TV's input type to Cable and change channels with the TVs tuner, then what Riverside has described is true and this should actually be a very good signal.

Using the term "RCA jacks" can also be very misleading. The lowest quality connection method, composite, usually yellow, uses RCA jacks. One of the two highest quality connections (component) also uses RCA jacks; but it uses three of them, red, green, blue typically.

That is true, which is why I specified 'composite' in my post.

Can anyone post or send me their Calibration Target settings for the 4696D? I'm trying to restore to normal. I tried Windowman4's settings (4095) but this left a dark 'band' at the top of the screen which I was able to reduce with the Reg_Taget_AC4 setting. However, makes me think that perhaps the settings are different for the 4696.

Thanks!

The article I could find on there was talking about passing 1080i tests, not p. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but the 1080i tests wouldn't be as indicative, except if they COULDN'T do it, in which case obviously p would be out of the question. Occasionally they mention how the manufacturer explicitly says it's good for 1080p, but at the review site they're not testing for it.

Hi, all: First post here. Thanks to all for the great info you provide on this forum.

Well, after much deliberation, pestering the guys at Tweeter, etc., I think I've decided to go with the LN-S4696D. I originally was going to go with a larger DLP,but after watching football and blue-ray on a DLP next to a plasma and LCD, there was no comparison...So I booted DLP from the equation.

Right now, I'm actually teetering between a Samsung HPS5053 (plasma, 50-inch, 720p), and the 4696. On the one hand, I've read that at this size, at about 10 to 12 feet away (which is how far I'll be sitting), I won't be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. Any thoughts on that, guys, specifically as it relates to these two models?

On the other hand, I saw a Blu-Ray movie hooked up in 1080p to the 4696, and it just looked incredible.....I know, why didn't I just look at the same movie on the 5053? Because they didn't have both sets at the same store (I was going back and forth between two stores). Your thoughts, guys, before I finally move beyond "analysis paralysis" and pull the trigger on one of these two units?

If it helps, my living room is fairly well lit (lots of natural light, but I can shut the shades,of course), and we watch a lot of movies, sports, and play a fair amount of video games.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm trying to decide between the Sony v2500 and the LNS4096 and need some input. I'm getting this set to use as my primary PC monitor, as well as my PS3 and 360. I'd like all 3 to be at 1080 and want to see what experience you guys have with this set. Was thinking of using either the VGA port or DVI=>HDMI for my pc, the 360 would use component, and the PS3 would use HDMI. Are there any issues I should know about concerning this set with those 3 ports? I hear of some overscan problems, but is that with just the HDMI port? Is it noticeable with the PS3 in HDMI as well or just pc inputs? Anyways, thanks!

Hi this is my first post, but following up with this thread because I, too want to get a 4096D sometime next month. I have read the overscan issue here and tried some Korean site to see if this is fixed. Following is the translation I did from "i can't put URLs urgh..." This reviewer apparently saw the firmware fixed the issue and he put up some proof. I believe the model he reviewd LN46M71BD also know as "mosel" series in Korea is same as 4X96D line in US.

Samsung Electronics recently announced that they added a new function to meet the demand of many HD enthusiasts to enjoy full HD using DVI-to-HDMI. So I am re-reviewing the fixed connectibility of this TV with DVI-to-HDMI.

[B]FULL HD LCD-TV, MOSEL, what did it get fixed?
Previously Mose only suppored analog RGB for PC connection and Samsung did not officially support DVI-to-HDMI connection with PC. When you use DVI-to-HDMI to PC, there was some overscanning on window screen, but this has been fixed with the new firmware upgrade. In other words, now when you use DVI-to-HDMI with the mode called "justscan" it enable you to match pixel 1:1. However this only applys to 1080i or 1080p digital signals, not 480p or 720p.
(reviewer shows some screenshots comparing (wide fit mode w/overscan, 16:9 w/overscan, and Justscan mode w/ 1:1 matching)

HOW DO YOU ENABLE JUSTSCAN MODE?
(i am not sure what menu on your tv says because i dont have this tv yet, but he just says you need to change your HDMI/DVI source to PC)

WILL I BE ABLE TO USE JUSTSCAN MODE WITH BLURAY?
Yes, you can use Justscan and match pixels 1:1, but trick is first you have to connect your bluray player with HDMI, second you need to edit the source to PC, so your tv thinks it is connected to PC not bluray player.

WHICH MODEL IS GETTING THIS UPGRADE?
Full HD TV of 40, 46, 52inches that have M7 in their model # and sold in Korea.

WHEN AND HOW WILL THIS UPGRADE HAPPENS?
Any TVs manufactured after 11/20 will have this new firmware upgrade and have Justscan mode. TVs manufactured before this time and already in Retail stores will be visited and upgraded by Samsung during 11/22 to 12/20. Consumers who already bought this TV will need to call A/S center after 11/28 for serviceman to visit their home and upgrade.

[end transltation]

Hope this helps..

well I own a Sony 40V2500 and the 360 looks absolutly amazing on it. It has an option called Full Pixel which alows you to see every bit of a 1080 image with zero overscan. My brother owns the LNS4095 and this option is not available on Samsung sets so you'll have over scan on all your games. Samsung does however let you achieve 1080p over component but me and my brother where unable to tell a difference on his set from 1080i. I'm not sure if the 4096 does 1080p through component or not but anyway the quality is so great on the V2500 you won't miss component 1080p and the Full Pixel option more than makes up for it. You will still get 1080p over HDMI and VGA with the V2500. The Samsung sets are really good but trust me, go with a V2500 and you'll be very happy. Oh yea HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!!! Why the hell am I on the computer right before new years....sick just like last year  poor me......

Gamers - please answer me one question.

How is the "real-world" response time?

I need to decide between the Samy 46" or the Sharp 46"

I'm attracted to the Sharp because of the response time, but I've already seen banding on the Sharp sets at dealers.. so I'm paranoid..

I seem to enjoy the picture of the Samsung.. just not sure how much Ghosting will show up playing games - XBOX360, PC.. ect.

Also, what's the general concensus as to cloudy panels, or "MURA" and how has Samsung's response been for any problems?

all cables that carry digital signals should not have any difference in quality according to 'RUSirius' in playstation3 forum (he's currently a broadcast engineer with an EE (electrical engineering) degree. $20 hdmi cable should do same job as $120 hdmi cable.

This is my first post. I am trying to decide what tv to buy. Right now I am choosing between the 4092, 4095 and 4096. I like the idea of the cable tuner built in, but I understand that you don't usually have channel menu functionality without the cable box. Does the 4096 have any built in menu that you can use if you don't have a cable box? Also can I use that tuner with a cable box to have HD PIP? Thanks for all the information off the forums. See I'm in the same situation, a potential buyer. Hopefully that makes this a money issue (if they don't fix this, they don't get our money), rather than merely a "oh, we already have their money, so who cares?" issue.

Still praying for a response to my call to support last week. As I said, I'll update the forum if/when there's a response (or if there isn't one by next monday evening).

LN-S4695 Green hue

1st Thank you to everyone who has put their thought's into these last 97 pages. We have just got the LN-S4695 and love it, however when watching SD we notice a green hue's around dark edges Hair faces ect. Is this just a set up problem or is their a problem with this set. I have not changed any setting expect moved to stanard picture from dynamic.

Thank you

I've seen a couple of posts like this, but from what I can tell no one has replied with an answer to this. (I've gone through the entire thread, but maybe I missed it with so many messages)

I'm seeing the same thing on my 4695. It's more noticeable with SD (from OTA and DirecTV), especially in dark scenes. I haven't been able to find picture settings that can correct this, I've tried changing the color and tint levels. I also notice in SD and HD, when a scene contains alot of green in the surroundings (i.e. such as in a forest), other colors tend to have a green tint. Is this something that can be corrected in the service menu or this is just a one of the downsides to LCDs?

Like everyone else, I have been following the developments on this thread, and specifically the overscan issue. I too am a "potential" buyer and I'm eagerly awaiting Samsung's response on this. I wanted to make my presence known, as hopefully if more of us do this Samsung will take notice. I'm after the 4696 (likely).

I did have a few additional questions that I didn't see answered, however (it's possible I missed them in the 100 pages, but I did look!)

1) Does this TV support discrete codes for universal remote use? I'm planning on using it with the Harmony 880. I assume yes, but I have yet to see this confirmed anywhere.

2) Unrelated to this TV - will I get a better picture going computer/DVI out->HDMI, or computer/DVI out->VGA? It would seem that the VGA port would work fine if your graphics settings are properly configured. This is unrelated to this TV, but I figured I'd ask.

3) Do the newer Nvida cards (8800 series?) support underscan to compensate for this issue?

I've been looking at this TV for some time and it is stunning..... I'm almost sold even if the overscan issue remains unresolved.

I don't use Game Mode, even with my 360, just because I don't like the way it looks. It makes the colors too garish, and the contrast too high, crushing the blacks.

When you enable Game Mode, the TV switches to the CUSTOM settings. If you adjust those settings to your liking the colors should not be washed out. I have my Component 1 hooked up to the 360 and set to Movie (I use the 360 for my DVD player also) and have Game Mode on. When I want to watch a movie, I turn off Game Mode and the TV switches back to the Movie settings. After i'm done and want to shoot at things again, I turn back on game mode and the CUSTOM settings activate.

I believe Game Mode makes the processor run faster, reducing Ghosting or Lag that fast moving games can have on LCD and Plasma TV's. I use it, but really never noticed a difference with it on or off.

I've been looking at this TV for some time and it is stunning..... I'm almost sold even if the overscan issue remains unresolved.

all cables that carry digital signals should not have any difference in quality according to 'RUSirius' in playstation3 forum (he's currently a broadcast engineer with an EE (electrical engineering) degree. $20 hdmi cable should do same job as $120 hdmi cable.

Up to a point. The "thickness" of the cable (the wire part) can have an impact on very long runs. Also, while el-cheapo connectors may spec the same when brand new, they won't last and may also fail far faster than a decently robust connector. Also, I'd bet you if you took a run of 100 el cheapos vs. 100 decent quality, far more of the el cheapos would not really meet the spec. BUT all hundred of those would make it into a "5 buck" cable.

My usual advice on HDMI cables is to stay away from the el-cheapo ones and much as the way overpriced ones. I looked to pay about 20 bucks for a decently made cable with decent quality conductors; I'd bet you it provides full spec a lot longer than those 5 buck cables!

If you want 1:1 pixel mapping, you have to use VGA. That is probably why Samsung says HDMI/DVI is NOT "supported" for "pc use."

Any picture from a computer SHOULD be able to be "adjusted" on the computer to look as good as any signal through HDMI or component. It all revolves around actually understanding color management and calibration of an output device.

your welcome sir. one reader of that review posted message saying he/she confirmed with samsung tech (in Korea) they just said since TVs do not have manufactured date printed anywhere, just buy it few weeks later in retail.

Huh? I have yet to see a TV from a major manufacturer not carry a manufactured date. For the hell of it, I just looked at my Samsung, sure enough, it carried a manufactured date on the serial number label.

why does it have the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen if it wide screen can please anybuddy help me on how to get rid of that or that is something from the movie it self i would really approciate it.A 16:9 TV has an aspect ratio of 1.78:1. Most motion pictures are 2.35:1 (some are even higher). So you end up with black bars on the top and bottom. Some DVD players might have a selection for TV type (4:3 or 16:9); if you pick the former, you may end up with a distorted/compressed image.

Quick question: I have a 4695. When I first got the TV, I had the picture size as 16:9. This showed the HD channels full screen, and the other digital channels with black space on both sides. Now for some reason it shows every channel full screen, not wide screen, but full screen. The problem is on non-HD channels some of the top and bottom of the pictures seem to be cropped off. When I look at my regular tube tv, I see more on top. For example, I can see a person's whole head and above. Now I am missing part of their head. I also can't see the writing on the bottom of the screen when the news is playing. I didn't have this problem before.

How can I fix this?

Thanks in advance.

Just change the picture size to 4:3 when viewing SD. I think it will 'remember' the setting.

I think you probably have your "pic size" (the small blue button on the bottom right" set to "Wide Fit/Move" Change it to 16:9 by clicking the button on your remote, twice.

Hi I just got the LN-S4096D over the weekend and I love everything about it so far. The HD content is amazing along with my PS3/Xbox 360 games and suprisingly SD content is not too bad either. But I was wondering if any could give my some advice on your sets personal settings, just the settings that you have access to normally not the service menu. Also this is gonna sound stupid but what is that piece of plastic for that was package in the box where the remote, manual, cleaning cloth, ect... came in?

It's not at "wide fit/move" but at 16:9, and it cuts off the top of the picture. It also does it at 4:3. I only get the full picture on HD channels for some reason.

Hi Jobeo,

I just went out to the garage and measured the box that my LN-S4096 came in...(Gakon's memory is very good)...The box measures in at 43.5" x 31.75" x 16.25"...It's pretty big for a sedan, but best of luck with your new set!

Ther other thing you could do is remove the TV from the box, then have a second set of hands to hold it steady in the back seat. Then collapse the box and place it it the trunk. Thats what I did since I have a 2 door Accord.

Can I get a thread recap here please? ;)

I am considering on settling for this T.V., I wanted the Sony XBR2 but did not want to spend almost $1k more then this set. I have seen this set in a BB and was very impressed with the quality picture. What are the biggest complaints? Is it the overscan? Can this set perform well as a computer monitor (do you get 1:1 pixel mapping)? I have xbox-360 and PS3, any concerns using either of these? How does SD look on it?

Ok I feel AVS guilt coming on, I will try to digest a smidgen of the 114 pages staring me in the face, if someone would be so kind to help me out tho I would be grateful!

I still do not have my tv as my 4696 is on order, but I have read a good 60-70 pages of this thread in the past week and a half.

From what I've read, all gamers are ecstatic with the PS3 and 360 on the 96D models. It was a big reason why I bought this model.

Picture Quality is apparently excellent in HD and decent on standard definition.

All issues with the 96D models revolve around the overscan, which is only a problem when using it as a PC. I have a HD box set up as I wait for my 4696D and have been watching HD channels on my non-HDTV.

Watching the HD channels on my current TV, I can tell you that the overscan is necessary because there is noise and junk along the edges of some programs. There is also A LOT of empty space above the FOX Sports score overlays when watching football games. Overscan would get rid of this wasted space at the top of the screen.

The issue PC users have revolves around connecting the PC via HDMI and Component. There is NO overscan if you use the VGA connection. If you use HDMI or Component, you will hafta adjust your options in your nvidea or ATI software. Underscan adjustments can fix most problems from what I've read.

There is also word that a 1:1 pixel mapping option called "Just Scan" was just released in the latest Korean Firmware to fix the HDMI overscan. We're all hopeful that firmware fix will make it to us :)

Overall, the Samsungs appear to have less issues then the Sony TVs, which have clouding. I can't wait for mine to arrive. Need anything, I'll try to answer but remember, I still don't have my unit. I can only go by what I've read.

One more question before reading through pages before me tonight.

I want the 46" LNS4696D model but have one question.

What's the difference b/w the:

LN-S4696D
LN-S4695D
LN-S4692D

What's the difference b/w the:

LN-S4696D
LN-S4695D
LN-S4692D

Previous post listed this for 4695D vs. 4696D...

There are a few other minor differences. The 4096 has:

- an USB port on the side panel for displaying images (the 4095 has a USB port too, but it's on the back and only for service)
- a composite video port on the side panel (the 4095 has SVideo I believe)
- two Firewire (1394) ports (on back)
- a nicer (IMHO) clear 'sound deflector' at the bottom (the 4095's is silver)
- an oval foot instead of the 4095's rectangular one

Stepping down to the 4692 and you lose 1080p, among other things.

ha, now that i have 5 posts under my belt...i can post hyperlinks :D

Few pages back, I translated a review of 'justscan mode' (which fixes overscan when you connect your pc w/ dvi-hdmi) from a korean av site. http://www.tv4u.co.kr/tv4u/content.asp?idx=1161&Sec=4
(you can check the screen shots of it fixing overscans by upgrading to current Firmware)

Reviewer / moderator of the site generously asked Samsung Korea's Tech support for us, and he got a reply from them. I dont know how high up was the tech support, but anyhow..here's what he wrote
I got a reply from Samsung Electronics Tech Team last night. Unfortunately 'Justscan mode' will only apply to Tvs that are sold in Korea. Board for US model is different so, upgrading the firmware w/ korean version is not really possible. New models coming out in the future will have this mode already, though.

so..i guess we need to keep bugging samsung america to get this firmware from korea and make it work in our model? even though it's bad news, reviewer of that korean site was really nice guy. appreciated it. :)

I currently have a Toshiba 47LZ196, and my set unfortunately has rather severe vertical ghosting problems. See http://home.houston.rr.com/wilddagger/GhostBars/GhostBars1.jpg, this is not actually my TV, but mine has exactly the same problem at the same locations.

The store I bought from also has the LNS4696D, but they want $300 more for it.

Before I even think about dropping more money into this abyss, can some of you just give me an overall feel of the cloudy/mura/ghosting situation with the 4696? The one I checked out in the store did not look like it had any problems, or at least any easily detectable problems by the same way I found the Toshiba's issues (by lowering the brightness).

I know every TV probably has some flaws here and there, but I think I'd take a dead pixel over the horrible ghosting I am experiencing right now.

I'm very happy with my 4696. I've noticed no clouding issues whatsoever. I compared this set side by side with the sony XBR3 and went with the Sammy. The price was about 1K less, the WAF was better with the Sammy's sleek design, and the HD picture did not look very different at all between the two. At the store I went to each was hooked up to its own HD source.

I think if you try 480i or 480p, you will significantly compromise your HD viewing, if you even get an HD picture. There will likely be no difference to SD PQ if you pick 720p or 1080i, although it might be easier for the TV to upconvert from 1080i to 1080p than from 720p to 1080p (maybe).

Hi,

Is there someone with Camcast + Cablecard + PS3?

I'm trying to decide between 4696D & Mitsu 46231.
I'll be posting the similar questions on Mitsu thread.

I need Cablecard, don't care about Overscan.
Your answers are MUCH Appreicated!!!

Q1: How's the cablecard performance when changing channels?
Going from Digital to HD... How long does it take? 1sec, 2sec, 3sec?
Does the cablecard produce as good or better PQ/SQ as STB?
Does the cablecard cause any extra noise (such as fan?) or heat?
With cablecard, you don't get any TV guide interface like STB, how livable is this?
BTW, I know it's 1 way with cablecard.

Q2: How's HD/SD fast action performance? Do you notice some blurring?
How bad or noticible is this?

Q3: How noisy or hot does this unit get? I haven't noticed much complain here...

Q4: It works great with PS3 in regards to gaming, blueray, DVD play, right?

Q5: How reliable do you think or feel this unit is? This is very subjective.
Would you get warranty beyond 2 years?

Q6: Any annoying things or issues a pontial buyer should know?

I'm trying to decide between 4696D & Mitsu 46231.
I'll be posting the similar questions on Mitsu thread.

I need Cablecard, don't care about Overscan.
Your answers are MUCH Appreicated!!!

I can't answer many of your questions but the Mitsubishi has a better cablecard option in my opinion. The Samsung doesn't support a guide while the Mitsubishi has a TV guide for checking programming, etc.

Can't compare but I've read better things about the SD picture on the Samsung..

I likely would've bought the Mitsubishi if it was sold here but it's not available in Canada so I went with the Samsung.

Hello all
I have a sam 4095d ( not sure if i should post it in here )
the set is working great i did however notice something happing a couple times
while watching sd and i think hdtv the pic .. it freezes and comeback in sections ( sorta like if you were watching via a dish network and a storm is coming thru , not losing complete signal... it just happens every now and then..
any opinions??
tv , cablebax or signal.... if its the tv i have a week or so b4 i can return it

thank all
This doesn't sound like a TV problem but a signal issue. Many cable boxes allow you to check signal strength - you might try that. But it also may be your provider not allocating enough bandwidth to each channel. That would be harder to check, but you might want to look for your local TV thread on these forums.

actually Gakon, because of the best buy screw up I paid alot less than you, $19xx after tax.

How about them apples!!!

And that wasnt why I posted the email in the Samsung thread, I posted it because it appears that Sony might finally be shipping out cloud-free sets so samsung might be doing the same as well.

Hello
2 questions...

1) Can anyone tell me if there is any difference in the Picture Modes on this set? I see Dynamic, Custom, Standard, and Movie. Do these just allow you to store different settings or are there other differences? In other words, if I fix the settings on the Dynamic mode to where I want them, is there any reason to use the other modes?

2) Are the service menu settings (Calibration Target, White Balance, Dynamic Contrast, SVP-LX, DNIE) specific to each input (i.e HDMI, Comp, VGA) so that if I change them on one it will not affect the other input?

Thanks

Dynamic, Custom, and Standard are all the same, but Movie is definitely something different. The colors are especially handled differently in Movie mode, thus it is my favorite.

Those tvs accept 1080p over HDMI and Component. Just check the product page on the Samsung site and go to "Specifications"

thanks but it only says Component (Y/Pb/Pr) in 2(480i/480p/720p/1080i/1080p)
it can mean component displays 1080p..doesnt it? anyways, i searched knowledge base and it confirmed "Of the current LN-S series LCD TVs, only those TVs with 95 or 96 as the last two digits of their model numbers (for example, LN-S4095D, LN-S5296D) accept a 1080p signal. None of the 2005 LN-R series Samsung LCD TVs accept a 1080p signal."

However I also found this. How Can I Adjust The Overscan On My LCD TV?

answer: The overscan on your LCD TV can only be adjusted by a qualified technician. To arrange a service appointment to get the overscan adjusted, call Samsung Customer Care at 1-800-Samsung (1-800-726-7864) any day between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Have the model number and serial number of your TV on hand when you call.

Anyone tried this for xx96D's overscanning issue? thanks

I have finally decided on a budget for a flat panel. I am going with Samsung, and I am choosing between the 4096 and 4692 lcd's or the 4273 plasma. I am looking for some advice. I will probably be sitting 8-10 feet from the screen. Fairly dark room, but sometimes the sun comes through. I will mostly be using it to watch sports on tv and as a computer monitor to watch downloaded movies. Appreciate any suggestions.

hey guys. i need some help figuring out if i've got room for these samsung displays in my setup.

i am looking for measurements for 2 things to those who have the 4096 and 4696 (or 4695 if it's the same)...

- the width of the base; not the unit, but the actual base of the stand

- the distance from the bottom of the unit to the surface (if this makes sense... i'm trying to determine the number of inches that the display sits up on top of a table if the stand is used. it's probably something like 2-5 inches, but i need an exact number. also, sometimes it is biger as you get closer to the edge of the display; i'm looking for it at the very edge of the display)

That's interesting. This overscan issue is the ONLY thing stopping me from pulling the trigger on this set as I'll be driving it exclusively from a pc. I might try to contact Samsung Australia to see what they're doing about this issue on new sets being shipped. I doubt they'll even know wtf :(

Someone else mentioned there's a way of combating the overscan via options in the nvidia/ati drivers? Does this really fix the problems and make it 1:1 or is it a ****** solution that doesn't look as good?

Why can't someone make a perfect tv damnit!? I wonder if laser and SED tv's will ever come out.

Hell0 -- i'm about to pull the trigger on the lns4095d I plan on using it for xbox360, hd-dvd- add on, and comcast.

Questions:

1) where is the best place to purchase? (what is best price?)

2) If not using it for pc does overscan matter?

3) Will the xbox 360 dvd player provide a 1080p signal through component cables.

4) Why choose this over the Sony v2500 or vice versa.

Thanks. . Great Forum.

Good morning, Please forgive me if this is redundant...I just received my 4696 and the cable company came out and hooked up the HD cable box to the TV with component cables. Is the picture I am seeing overscaned? I knew of the overscan issue when using HDMI, but is it also with component?

If it is, I can live with it...scores, tickers, etc are all visible. I just want to know, so that if they change the box in a few years to HDMI, I don't want to all of a sudden start to encounter overscan that I can't stand to view.

Thanks!

1. That's research you have to do. Are you comfortable buying over the internet, or would you rather have the ability to return the set easily if there's a problem or you just don't like it? Can you get a local merchant to give you a deal? Where do you live? (BTW, these are rhetorical questions. Specific pricing discussions are not permitted here).
2. According to what I've read, no. This should answer newhdtv2006's question, to. The only overscan issue is using HDMI from a PC.
3. Can't answer this as I don't have an xbox, but you ought to be able to find this information out with minimal effort.
4. Probably personal preference. Both have advantages and disadvantages. V2500 does have a QAM tuner but 4095 does not. 4095 accepts 1080p over component but V2500 does not. See what you like best.

I would doubt this is a "warranty repair" kind of issue, so it seems one might have to pay.

I did read a post yesterday about some guy that had no overscan and was wondering about some "edge crawlies" he was seeing. From his description, it sure sounded like the artifacts that long ago were dealt with by some overscan.

This is my first post. I would like to know what would be a better choice between the Samsung LN-S4696D or the Samsung HL-S5688W RPTV. I play alot of Xbox 360 and I also have the HD-DVD drive for it. I do have a couple questions though.

1. Does the 4696D accept 1080P using VGA?

2. How long does the lamp last on the 5688W?

I just want the better tv for gaming and HDTV. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1) I'd say you're going to get a better price from your local mom and pop shops.. but they typically won't accept returns. They will do exchanges though. So, once you give them your money, you're not getting it back. The big box stores will let you do almost anything. The mom and pop shops are probably a bit more accomodating though, because they're happier for the business. As for Internet purchases, personally, I'd stay away from those.

2) I'm not sure. If there's overscan on my TV, I haven't noticed it.

3) Yes.. and it looks amazing.

4) I dunno, that's research you'll have to do.

2. No idea!

I'd definately buy an LCD over a RPTV though...

Since finding the settings button on my cablebox, I'm like a mad scientist  . Quick question: My cablebox output is automatically set to 1080i. If I accept all the other ouputs my tv accepts, 480i, 480p, 720p, will I get a better picture on SD channels, or does it really matter?

Thanks.

The best thing for you to do would be to play aruond with them and see what you like best :)

I'd bet that you'd like your 1080i or 720p for SD most, though!

I have the 4095D, 360 and HD-DVD drive and can try to answer 3 & 4.

The 360 outputs 1080p via component to the 4095. I believe you can only get 480p via the internal DVD player unless you use the VGA cable which has some issues with the 4095D.

As for the HD-DVD drive, you can only get 1080i via component right now. I think this is the case for all HDTVs.

Regarding the Sony v2500, I'm not sure it can handle 1080p via component...

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I got my 4696D on Dec 22, and in a rush of excitement, tried to connect my Cablevision cablebox, with its DVI outport, to the HDMI. The cable signal was blocked, and so I went with my next best option, components.

I was very pleased with the picture on the components, especially the HD stations (SD, seen now in all its raw imperfections, takes a while to get used to, of course.) Most of my satisfaction had to do with the results I eventually got after I tweaked the four modes (Dynamic, Standard, Movie, and Custom) to accommodate for what I thought was the Sammy's inability to register inky black blacks. For the first week or so, I honed in on settings, some cooler, most warmer, with contrast set to 100 and brightness to 0 for a great and vivid picture.

Last night, I tried the DVI to HDMI cable again and found the cable box was no longer blocking the picture (most likely I had misconnected something in my initial excitement.) Well, the black levels returned with a vengeance, too much so, and I found I had to bring all my bright registers up, and still found each movie needed to be tweaked for bright or dark, not once but also during day vs. night scenes.

I wanted to see 1080p, and similarly had set up my xbox and the HD DVD player to come through the VGA port. (FYI, in VGA language, 1080p translates to a resolution of 1920 x 1080.) Certainly the xbox dashboard and game visuals were noticeably sharper, while the HD player was doing a stunning job of upconverting SD DVDs. Unlike many others, I was unmoved by the PQ of the HD King Kong, which seemed only marginally sharper, but not the leap we had seen when we went from VHS to DVD. I am happy with the HD DVD player, nevertheless, despite the white noise of the fan (turn up the receiver) and its tendency to whine now and then at startup.

I write this to make the point that I am not blind to the slight advantage of 1080p over 1080i. I am, in fact, the sort of guy that prefers to run things at max resolution, with over-the-top saturation. So why did I switch back, after a day, to my component connections?

I realized the HDMI was overkill -- not usually a problem for me in any other area. HDMI is for 1080p broadcasts, but at the moment the best TV can do is 1080i, which is the forte of the component connections.

The deep black of the HDMI required constant monitoring -- even King Kong on the HD DVD needs bright adjustments, though one setting is all that's required. After a day of getting to know the bright settings, I now am open to setting my component brights on 0, 10 or 15. Also I have learned the value of using the Energy Saver (my setting is low) which softens the light coming out of the panel.

Bottom line, I chose components because they were more managable and flexible. Plus, the picture quality was superb.

So those are my findings in the battle of HDMI vs Component. Would enjoy hearing the experience of others

I am waiting on my 4095 to come in via special order from CC. I currently have a 4092 and i haven't seen or heard anywhere that the 4092 is a better set. I am returning the 4092 when the 4095 arrives.

The main thing for me was 1080p (even given all of the smack that people are talking about how its just hype - its newer tech and i want it).

I only hope i like the PQ on the 4095 as much as i do the 4092. Also, if what i see is correct, the little sound deflector on the 4095 isnt as pronounced (looks nicer on the 4095) as it is on the 4092. Anyone else care to comment?

You hope the PQ is as good on the 95 as it is on the 92?! It's a newer 1080p TV, shouldn't it be better? If you paid several hundred dollars more for a TV that has a worse-looking picture I would be livid!!!

I'm still not clear though about the bezel on the 4696. Is it flat black or gloss black? On the 4696D, the cabinet bezel around screen is very high gloss black but the lower speaker sound deflector that runs under the front bottom edge is clear plastic. The 4695D's bezel is the same but the lower deflector is silver plastic. Most feel the clear plastic looks much better (especially the female sex) as a thin silver strip at the bottom of a large all black set seems incongruous. I feel the same.

Good afternoon everyone,

I am new here and have been researching the LN-S4096D and the 4095D for a week or so. I realize the differences are the cable card slot, usb port and a firewire port as well as a few cosmetic improvements with the 4096.

Right now, I can get the 4096 for $3000, while the 4095 is $2500. For my purposes I don't believe that the $500 difference is warranted, even though the guy tried to lie and tell me the 4096 had a 7000:1 contrast ratio compared to the 6000:1 for the 4095 model (I called him on it and he pretty much walked away haha).

I jsut want to clear up a few things before I pull the trigger here.

1) Do both models support 1080p over component cable? (For my Xbox 360) I am pretty sure it does, but it's better to ask now :)
2) Is the overscan issue a big deal? I've read it's roughly 2-4% which isn't too bad but I am no expert on these things
3) are there any other issues I should be concerned with/research beforehand?

Now for other questions not related:

1) Will my Xbox HD-DVD drive upconvert my SDDVD's to 1080i or 1080p or do I need a special player for that?

Does anyone have measurements on the base of the 4095D? I'm curious if it will fit on a shelf I have.

LN-S4095/6:
27.3 x 39.1 x 12.8 (HxWxD) with Stand
25.4 x 39.1 x 3.6 (HxWxD) without Stand

LN-S4695/6:
27.3 x 44.4 x 12.8 (HxWxD) with Stand
25.4 x 44.4 x 4.2 (HxWxD) without Stand

The detailed operating manuals with engineering drawings and fairly accurate dimensions are now available online at Samsung.com as PDFs. However, the various documents may vary some dimensions but no more than 0.1".

In any case, be sure to allow at least an extra inch on all sides for ventilation, cleaning, adjustment, and pleasurable fondling.

Please forgive me for asking this question, but as much as I have tried, I could not find the answer. What is the difference between the 4695 and 4696? Thank you.

Only external differences I found so far are:
Lower speaker baffle: 95D (silver plastic), 96D (clear plastic)
S-Video: 95D (2, back & left side), 95D (1, back)
USB: 95D (none), 96D (1, left side)
FireWire: 95D (none), 96D (2 on back)
Service Jacks: 95D (2, back), 96D (1, back)
Digital Cable Card Slot: 95D (none), 96D (1, back)

Notes:
Various marketing collateral shows various minor discrepancies but, overall, the specs are identical.

Owner evaluations in this forum suggest some very minor improvments in picture quality in terms of reduced overscan and response time. Based on those 2nd hand comments and my in store comparisons, I surmise they have simply tweaked (rather than replaced) the internal circuitry a tad or, perhaps, only changed some internal default settings.

They call their USB ports "WiseLink" but they are just USB using the Mass Storage Class standard which allow accessing to thumb drives and external hard drives that are formatted FAT16/32. This provides playing functions for MP3's (not WMA) and displaying JPEG's in a slide show. Nice touch for filling the room with images of your favorite human.

They call their FireWire ports "D-Net" but they are just IEEE1394 aka PC FireWire aka Sony i.Link. Unfornutely, it is highly limited to the control of external devices but NOT for the import of DV video. It only imports MPEG-2 - which is rather lame. Video FireWire camcorders are nearly all DV which is NOT supported. The Japanese seems hot on adding FireWire ports (eg, see high end Yamaha receivers) for elaborate control of external devices that can be chained together and seem to be skipping the most obvious and pressing need of monitoring today's DV camcorders. Some camcorders are MPEG-2, but they are short-lived as the industry is starting to abandon higher class DV for the MPEG-4 harlot as her compression is much greater

The "Service" ports are for service technicians. The 95D had two of different types. They eliminated one of them on the 96D which suggests the other was no longer needed or was never needed in the first place.

Based on the very small price difference, $200 on BB Sale ending 1/6/07, I am buying the 4696D for $29xx. The 4695D is $27xx. I am an anal graphics designer and photographer and, to my seasoned eyes, the 4696D is the best LCD display on the CC, BB, an Magnolia floors I have reviewed to date - bar none (Sony too)! I ruled out plasma long ago - I find them unwatchable from within 10 feet due to the large pixels which make everything look like you are looking through a mesh. I also find the 4696D displays SD no more horrible than all others. That is, ALL HD sets show SD as utterly disgusting since CRT's have no detail and blur adjacent lines thus hiding how bad SD has always been. The blurring of plasmas with their mesh also smooth SD more. I prefer to view reality in all it's obscene splendor.

Speaking of iPODs ... is everyone aware that the 4696 has an iPOD interface and UI built into the firmware .... other Samsungs may as well.
I think you may be confusing their "WiseLink" USB Mass Storage Class support which is nothing like iPod support. WiseLink allows you to play MP3's or JPG's on stored on a thumb drive or exernal USB hard drive via on screen menus.

iPod support generally refers to ability for 2-way communications with an iPod through its docking connector to plays its content, read its song info, and actually control the unit. That is, you control the iPod to have it play the songs which are then fed to controlling component - whatever it is.

There is no device control via Samsung's WiseLink USB connection on the 4696D. It's simply not part of the USB data device standard.

I'd be very happy to be wrong!
Please let me know if I am.

I also own the 4696D and have my Directv HD receiver connected with HDMI. The brightness and contrast levels have to be turned WAY down. I have my Sammy set to Dynamic Cool 1 with the brightness and contrast at 40. Sometimes while watching SDTV channels it still seems to bright, but watching any HD channels it's perfect.

One thing I do not like is the "Game Mode" option. I have my PS3 connected using HDMI and I want to use the option but can't. When using "Game Mode" it seems like the pictures brightness and the contrast gets boosted way to high. All games are to white.

Anyone with some good calibration tips for HDTV, SDTV, and Game Mode?

Right now, I can get the 4096 for $3000, while the 4095 is $2500. For my purposes I don't believe that the $500 difference is warranted, even though the guy tried to lie and tell me the 4096 had a 7000:1 contrast ratio compared to the 6000:1 for the 4095 model (I called him on it and he pretty much walked away haha).
Too much money for either one. Look around or wait a little more. I don't know where you live, but prices here in Denver are significantly lower (the 4096 is selling for less than the price you gave for the 4095, and that's before the discounts).

I have the DirecTV H20 hooked up via Component to my 4095. You can adjust settings in Game Mode. I like game mode because it speeds up the refresh rate, so things like NFL football in 1080 look much more smooth. I use the same settings from the Movie mode, but in the Custom setting, because Game Mode locks in Custom. But even without Game Mode enabled, using the Movie settings in Custom mode looks really good.

Sorry, I should have mentioned those are Canadian dollar prices...I am just curious if the 4096 is worth an extra $600(with taxes).

I have the 4695, so I figure it has the same setup.

1. Hit menu
2. scroll over to picture, hit enter
3. scroll down to mode, hit enter
4. everything is right there.

FYI, for each mode such as Dynamic, standard, etc., you have to change the settings to what you like.

Good luck.

I had the same debate a little over a month ago, as im sure others have. I ended up with the 4095, so while I dont know if im missing anything, I dont feel like I am. I decided that the only time I would really use a cable card would be if I got an new Tivo, and it has the slots in it. I also figured the USB input would be nice for showing pictures, but my digital camera has a composite cable to show pictures, and the tv has the input on the side for that... I took the money I saved and put it toward the cost of a new AV Receiver that has HDMI capabilities.

I have the S4096D and a friend has the S4696D - we're both experiencing the same behavior.

When viewing SV in 4:3, the screen spontaneously changes to 16:9 after a while.

When in Standard Picture Setting, the display changes to Dynamic after a while.

Do others experience this behavior?

You both probably have the televsion still set in "shop mode". Read the manual and re-set to "home mode". The shop mode is made to spontaneously reset to the best settings for a sales display floor so that customer tampering will not make the televisions look bad compared to the competition. Or tampering by Best Buy salesmen for that matter.

The set is operting in "shop". You need to change it "Home" mode. Search through the postings for this on how to change it. It's been posted numerous times. It's one of the first settings in the setup menu

I've had my set since october, and the one thing I've never gotten to work is the dynamic dimming in the SM. I have set it to on and then turned the set off, and I've even reset it after changing the options, however each time the mode is no engaged without turning on DNIE. I can tell this because when I set dnie to on I notice the screen dims further, and when I go back to the SM the setting is off.

I have read that other people have gotten it to work on all modes including movie, but it just hasnt worked for me. Anyone have any ideas about what I'm doing wrong?

A newbie here but could not find this answered in the forum elsewhere:

I have a LN S4696D and have trouble with my DirecTV Receiver (HD 20 - 100) that when I try to connect the HDMI cable, the sound and video flicker out intermittently and irregulary. DirecTV is of no help. A DVD player with HDMI out does seem to work OK. Any ideas what I can try or what could be wrong? Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

My setup:
Samsung LNS4696D HDTV
Xbox 360 + HD DVD drive connected directly to the TV via Component
Xbox 360 set to 1080p output

The problem: I'm noticing a mostly-white horizontal line near the top and bottom of DVDs and HD DVDs that are 2.4:1 like Gladiator (DVD) and Batman Begins (HD DVD) but not on full screen widescreen like like Smallville (which is 1.85:1).

Both the HD DVD and HDTV were recently purchased. Before purchasing the Sammy, I tried two separate Sharp LC46D62Us, but both had severe picture quality problems (backlight bleeding and horizontal banding). I didn't notice this "white line" problem on those sets, but I only had them for a few days. To be honest, I didn't notice the "white line" on the Sammy until recently. It's not a complete deal breaker for me but I am curious if it's a problem with the TV or the 360's DVD/HDDVD.

Note: The "white line" never appears when watching SD, gaming, or full widescreen HD programming on my cable box. So far, I've only noticed it while playing 2.4:1 DVDs and HD DVDs on the 360.

Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this?

(I made a similar post in the 360 HD DVD bug thread, but I thought I'd double post here because it might be a problem with my HDTV.)

So i'm thinking about exchanging my sony 40" xbr 2 for the LN-S4095D, mostly because i heard that getting a sony that doesn't have any clouding issues is pretty much a crap shoot. So what i'm wondering is, is it also a crap shoot to get a samsung tv without clouding as well, since they are both sharing the same panel. thanks

It takes a DVD in the 1.85:1 to fill the height of the screen . Unfortunately, most DVDs are not in this format and will not fill the height of the screen, and you have to use a zoom type setting on your tv to do it. It has nothing to do with Samsung or Sony or any other brand of TV.

From post 3384 (page 113)

When you enable Game Mode, the TV switches to the CUSTOM settings. If you adjust those settings to your liking the colors should not be washed out. I have my Component 1 hooked up to the 360 and set to Movie (I use the 360 for my DVD player also) and have Game Mode on. When I want to watch a movie, I turn off Game Mode and the TV switches back to the Movie settings. After i'm done and want to shoot at things again, I turn back on game mode and the CUSTOM settings activate.

I would try hooking up the RCA cables. If the sound and video are ok and consistent, try switching from HDMI1 to HDMI2.. if the problem is resolved, you'll know it's the port. If not, you'll know it's your DirectTV received itself.

on a side note, when using my xbox360, when I change the volume on my received (which the sound is going through, the video is directly connected to my TV), the screen temporarily re-adjusts or dissapears. It's a bit frustrating but not a huge deal. But maybe somehow similar to your problem. Is it when you do something?

I know that some widescreen aspect ratios don't fill the screen, while others do. That's not a problem.

The problem I'm experiencing (as seen in the pictures I attached above) is that there are two visble white lines (one at the top of the picture frame, and one at the bottom) when playing films like Batman and Gladiator. It's quite noticeable depending on the film. I've never seen this white line with my old HDTV and DVD player regardless of aspect ratio.

Please take a look at the pictures I posted! :)

I am not 100% sure if I am getting light bleeding from the left side of the tv, but in dark scenes, the set is noticeably lighter on the left side of the tv. I am seated about a foot to the right of the edge of the right side of the television...the tv is in my bedroom. I notice that when I move closer to the center of the tv, the left side of the tv isn't quite as light.

Has anyone experienced this LCD tv to be THAT sensitive as far as lateral movement, light vs. dark?

To be clear, I know this set does overscan images. It's painfully obvious when connecting a PC because my Start Bar is cut off. For PC use, I consider it minor problem for my own use because I rarely use it for that.

But I haven't heard anyone complain of noticeable problems while watching HD DVD or DVDs.

Also, if this "white line" is in fact outside of the normal viewing area, wouldn't this technically be underscan instead?

I've been looking online and see "wall mounts" and "wall mount brackets." Do I need both? or just a wall mount? (I have a wall with an inch or so of drywall and, behind that, concrete.) And can someone recommend a brand/model that would keep the TV close to the wall?

Thanks so much,

Sienar, thanks for the tip. For the most part, it does solve the problem. At 8 feet away from the set, I can no longer see the white line. With Sharpness set to 30 or less, it's virtually unnoticeable unless you're within a foot of the screen.

If this is trully the problem, I wonder why no one else noticed this problem on any of the factory settings? It's flagrantly viewable on Dynamic, Standard, and Custom (Default) picture modes with my setup. 'Movie' is the only picture mode with Sharpness set low enough so that it's not visible.
