View Full Version : Depeche Mode SACDs
shugazer9 03-17-06, 01:48 PM I just recieved an email from Music Direct announcing pre-order of 3 Depeche Mode SACDs- Violator, Speak And Spell and Music For The Masses, which is my fave DM recording. They dont appear to be hi-rez 5.1 mixes, but they should still sound pretty good. Hey, first Talking Heads, then Moody Blues- some really good stuff is being released on MC!

That's really good news. Being a teenager through the '80's, Depeche Mode was one of my favorite's.
SA-CD.net has them all listed as hybrid/multi-channel, so maybe they will be 5.1 mixes. :D
http://www.sa-cd.net/search/depeche+mode/1/0/0/1
shugazer9 03-18-06, 10:27 PM They are in 5.1, but not at the highest resolution bitrate, I'm afraid. Violator should lend itself well to multi-channel
HiRes_PR 03-18-06, 10:59 PM They are in 5.1, but not at the highest resolution bitrate, I'm afraid. Violator should lend itself well to multi-channel
What do you mean by "not at the highest resolution bitrate"?
SACDs bit rate/sampling rate is only one.
shugazer9 03-19-06, 12:12 PM The description at Music Direct says they have DTS and Dolby D 5.1 mixes. Is that the best they can be on SACD? I know that is not true audiophile surround on DVD-A.

That's the description of the extra DVD the 2 discs set includes. The primary disc is a hybrid SACD\CD with both SACD 5.1 and SACD 2ch DSD high resolution digital format runing at 2.8224MHz plus the CD 2ch layer at 44.1Khz/16bit. SACD doesn't support DTS or Dolby Digital. The other disc is a regular DVD-Video disc with all the extras.
Hope to clarify your confusion.
shugazer9 03-19-06, 07:00 PM Glad to hear it, HiRes- add these to the Must Buy list!
Lasersnuser 04-08-06, 06:15 AM Just got "Violator" and it sounds great in SACD surround!
All together a great package: 2 discs in a beautiful fold-out digipak and transparent slip case.
The rest of their catalog is reportedly being released later this year. My personal favorite is "Songs of Faith and Devotion." Can't wait!
Mitch
On the topic of DM, how's 101? Also, under "Content" SA-CD.net lists it as "multichannel/stereo." Is it a mix of 2.0 and 5.1 tracks?

It's not a mix - as in some tracks are in stereo while other tracks are in multichannel.
The SACD contains the entire album in Redbook CD stereo format, the entire album in DSD stereo, and the entire album in DSD multichannel.

Dibenzylacetone 04-09-06, 11:24 AM I'm happy to hear about these releases also. In addition, I hope they release Black Celebration - that album brings back quite a few good memories. Furthermore, if you haven't bought it already, the concert video A Night In Paris is really enjoyable, even though the picture quality is not first rate. Without a doubt, it's a great show, with top notch performances by David Gahan and Martin Gore. As a matter of fact, one of my favorite parts in the video, is when Martin Gore tells the audience to shut up in French - so that he may perform his solo.
Dibenzylacetone 04-09-06, 11:41 AM Wow, the performance of stereo and multichannel SACD, and a DVD version with 5.1 surround - all for less than $26 on CD Universe! What's the hell is next, a free concert ticket with each purchase?
hotguy8289 04-09-06, 07:55 PM Can someone shed some light? CDUniverse lists these as SACD with a DVD-A disc. This is shown at the bottom of the listing:
"Digitally remastered UK double disc edition of the Depeche Mode classic album that includes a hybrid SACD of the original studio album coupled with a DVD-A (PAL/RC-0) with the full contents of the SACD plus bonus tracks and a band featurette. (You must have a PAL capable player to utilize the DVD-A)."
Being from the UK, is this DVD-A disc wasted on most of us? My unit doesn't play PAL discs.

I doubt it's a DVD-A. Just a DVD. Otherwise it's replicating the SACD and what's the point in that.
Being so, the DVD would be wasted on people with no multi-system capability. But at least you can watch it on your PC if you wanna know what's in the disc.

It's a DVD-Video not a DVD-Audio, but it's got the complete album in:
Dolby Digital 5.1
DTS 5.1 24/96
PCM 2.0 24/48
govegan 04-10-06, 10:32 AM Has anyone gotten theirs yet? I received a shipping notice from CD-WOW last week, but mine haven't arrived yet. I'm just wondering what people make of the mixes.

So, how are they in surround?
The 5.1 mixes are great! Surround is used actively and in an appropriate way. This music is really suited for surround, and I prefer to listen to these albums in this way.

Have the first 3 now. My wife calls me 'old school', but it's great to listen to finally listen to some music I actually like (from my high school/college days) on hi-res MC.
WOW. I'm an avid DM fan since the start, and didn't realize all these were coming out until just now. Black Celebration and Music for the Masses are in my all time favs of any albums.
This explains it all:

jonathanb3478 06-01-06, 03:51 AM The next must-have SACDs (for me, personally) since my orginal purchase of everything I liked by Billy Joel. That purchase preceeded my purchase of an actual player (Sony ES SCD-C555ES).
The "Pepper and Eggs" Sopranos soundtrack was excellent, but I didn't know that until after I got it and took a listen. That does not count as "must-have" in my book.
On the topic of DM, how's 101? Also, under "Content" SA-CD.net lists it as "multichannel/stereo." Is it a mix of 2.0 and 5.1 tracks?
Others may disagree, but I was let down with 101. It's strange, years ago when they released the double CD, I thought the quality was poor, and then I recently grabbed the SACD and voila, same thing. I'm sure the rest of their albums will be excellent, but for me 101 has always been a let-down. Great music, poor recording.

So where do I buy this SA-CD version?
Is this the proper link? http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7111938&style=music&cart=348058938&BAB=E
If it is, it's still not out yet (release date is June 27).
or do I buy from CD WOW which has the PAL video which is lost on me.
Can someone please clarify definitively?

I ordered mine from CD WOW. http://www4.cd-wow.us/detail_results.php?product_code=268891
It's 2 discs...SACD & PAL DVD (the dvd has video).
I think you'll be hard pressed to find it for less money than CD WOW.
Good luck!
I think 101 sounded so bad because it was recorded in mammoth L.A. colisseum
I think it was the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, but I could be wrong. Still a big stadium. Bought "101" anyway, and it definitely won't get as much listening time as S&S, Violator and Masses. Seemed like just crowd noise in the surrounds in "101".
Also bought from CD-wow. Took about 1 week to ship. The packaging was flimsy, but otherwise the discs were in perfect condition. Ridiculous cheap. Recommended...that is unless I find a bunch of fraudulent charges on my next credit card bill (which I doubt). :)
Camowie 06-07-06, 11:05 PM I waited till yesterday to see what the US Rhino Releases would contain. They are only CD+DVD with the CD portion including no SACD layer and the DVD portion including no DVD-A layer. What a disappointment. Only DD and DTS mixes are included in the US release. I believe I'm going to go ahead and order all four Depeche Mode SACD+DVD UK releases because of this. I probably should've done this earlier anyway since my DVD unit will convert PAL to NTSC for the DVD portions. Anyone else feel shorted?
WriteSimple 06-08-06, 10:38 AM The DVD was never intended to be a DVD-A. It's just to show fans how the music sounds in surround sound via DD and DTS. If they want the pure audio, they have to purchase an SACD/universal player and use the hybrid disc.

Camowie 06-09-06, 07:38 PM I'll have to let you know ins week or so; my disks are on their way to me from the UK. The DVD disks will be PAL format. Do you have the 2910's out out set to multi or NTSC?I believe you may have to set it to NTSC.
WriteSimple 06-16-06, 09:46 AM I just got the Violator set.
CD/SACD with no extras. Stereo and Multichannel.
DVD Video of the album in LPCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 96/24. No music videos. Extra tracks in LPCM stereo only.
I must say that I can clearly hear the difference between DTS and DSD. :D:D:D I just need an entire afternoon to play the album loud!

Lasersnuser 07-26-06, 06:55 AM Amazon UK now lists "Songs of Faith and Devotion", "A Broken Frame" and "Some Great Reward" on SACD for Sept. 11. It's not possible to preorder yet, however.
Mitch
I thought that these cd's were only multichannel and not in hi-rez? I have the violator sacd hybrid. Granted it sounds good but I love this cd and it seems to be perfectly designed for multichannel. I guess my deal is that I was expecting to hear this huge difference in sound quality and I haven't appreciated that quite yet. Any thoughts?
dougotte 07-27-06, 10:28 AM Rvanya, the SACDs are hi-rez; that's part of the definition of SACD. I've found that rock/pop SACDs do sound better than the regular CD versions. However, the difference is not as impressive as I hear on classical SACDs.
I think it comes down to basic sound quality differences between the two universes. Rock/pop music (with some exceptions) is just not recorded or mixed with as high fidelity as most classical.
In fact, SACD makes the bad qualities of rock/pop recordings stand out even more clearly, to my ears.
Doug

I purchased the SACDs not expecting much over the CDs. As predicted, I'm not blown away (have Violator, Masses and S&S), but still feel I'm getting my money's worth. The remixes aren't great, bu how often are bands you really like putting out hires discs anyway? That's why I bought.

Zen Traveler 08-13-06, 11:20 AM Jeez, I thought I was up on all of this multi-channel stuff. I purchased the Violator (really liked) & Music for the Masses (waste of money, imo) 2 disk sets (CD & DD/DTS DVD) and now I find there are actually high-rez formats available outside of the United States.
Depeche mode is one of the few groups I prefer to watch/listen to on their DVD concert video ( One NIght in Paris--a lot better visually and sonically than Devotional) than listening to the 2 Audio disks initially mentioned.
I feel differently when it comes to other artist, for example, REM. I like the Perfect Square Live DVD--but always feel compelled to play their Greatest hits DVD-A (highly recommended) sometime during the viewing of the concert. :)
DJ_JonnyV 08-23-06, 11:28 PM I take it that the DVDs would play in the Acuras' DVD-based audio system? Picked Violator up for my brother for his bday. He has a TL and is always complaining that there's nothing out there for DVD-A.

Might play the DTS 5.1 (24bit/96k) layer, but not the hi-res 5.1 SACD mix.
Lasersnuser 09-04-06, 03:59 AM Now available for pre-order at Amazon UK: "A Broken Frame", "Some Great Reward" and "Songs of Faith and Devotion". Also updated is the Depeche Mode remasters site (http://remasters.depechemode.com/).
Seems you guys in the US won't be getting an SACD-layer on discs one this time either. What gives?
Mitch
I opted to buy the PAL/All Region SACDs from Hong Kong, will be doing it again for these releases once they become available... They play perfectly on my Pioneer SACD/universal player...
Zen Traveler 10-22-06, 09:09 AM I wanted to post on this thread although I live in the United States and have the DD and DTS versions of these disks. I posted my impressions of the first 2 disks I bought above. Recently I purchased Speak and Spell which I really like (although the lyrics aren't as, how shall we say ,"Hetro" enough for me to feel comfortable walking around the house singing :D ). I didn't realize it was one of their first releases because of the techno-synthesizer feel to it and the clarity of the sound. It's a fun one to listen to.
On the Songs of Faith and Devotion disk however, the 2 songs I really like from other sources sound way to bass intensive compared to anything else I own. Both "I feel you" and "Walking in my shoes," really takes some tweeking to get to sound right. Even then it's not the sonic experience I was expecting from this disk. Is anyone else having this problem?
On a side note I found Touring the Angel DVD-Video in practically the same packaging and in the same section as the other DD/DTS audio disks in Bestbuy. In fact, I thought I was buying an audio disk until I got home and read the fine print. Btw, it was a good concert and a close 2nd to "One Night in Paris" out of the 4 Depeche Mode concert DVDs I have.

I'm not having this problem. I just tested the first two songs "I feel you" and "Walking in my shoes" and the bass sounds well balanced to me. I am surprised though how close the DTS 24/96 track sounds next to the SACD...both are great mixes (same mix) and would have no reservation listening to the DTS over the SACD. I most likely will keep the DTS version on my music server for quick acesss. I love the packaging on these discs (D M catalog).Having a choice of formats and a few video's too on 2 discs is the ultimate in flexibility! Eric

Does your disc have a 24/96 DTS track. I doubt they would have mixed it twice however I do see them saving money by not including the SACD portion. Also how do you have your bass management set up (if you are using BM). I had a problem with multichannel music before I got a better processor with proper BM.
I picked up my discs from CD WOW for 17 bucks delivered. A deal IMO. I plan on getting the rest of the catalog before the end of the year.Eric

Yes, it does have the DTS 96/24 track, but no SACD. I have the Denon DVD-3910 and am familiar with how BM works. I have 4 Depeche Mode disks along with 60+ SACD's and DVD-A's. This disk is unique in the amount of work I have to do to get it to my liking. I also own 4 of their concert DVD's and prefer those 2 songs on them rather than on this DTS disk. I understand those songs are bass intensive and maybe a little too intensive on how I have my system setup. ;) I wanted to post my impressions in case I bought an anomaly. BTW, thanks for your response, himey.

I just picked up Bjork-Medulla and that disc has much much BASS! It's the DVD-Audio version and it gets LOW! Newer release so I would expect it to! Also I am looking foward to the new Doors Box set. Eric

I am an enormous dM fan and have had these DVDs for a month or so now. We recently purchased an Acura RDX which has DVD-Audio capability, but much to my dismay, the dM DVDs do not play. This may be a silly question - but is there anyway to convert them to DVD-Audio?

I would assume that is a region coding problem, and if you can copy and convert a DVD-V to region 1 that might work. I don't have any idea how to do that however. Making a DVD-A might make it region 1 if software exists to accomplish that, again I don't know how that would be done but the average PC doesn't have the necessary software. I wouldn't worry about making it DVD-A if it is a region issue, just finding a way to copy and convert to region 1 would be the solution.

WRONG! Regional encoding is only for the video content.
You could take the 5.1 audio, extract it to wav files, then create a DVD-A with Wavelab 5 or DiscWelder. It's a lot of work, however it can be done.
Forgot about these. I'll have to order Music For The Masses right away. Maybe Violator too since it's CD is in dire need of a remaster.
shugazer9 01-13-07, 05:20 PM Finally got around to listening to Violator. Its one of the best MC discs Iv heard so far. I loved the panning effects with the deep bass, which is why i run my subs in stereo. I will probably get Music For The Masses (If only for Never Let Me Down Again) & Songs Of Faith And Devotion (I saw that tour and was blown away!)
Now if only they release Black Celebration.

Really? I have seen some non-region 1 DVD's I can't play period since I can't get any menu to select anything, all I get is a message stating check region or wrong region with one of my players. If you are sure the automobile DVD-V players won't have this issue then I would say a region code issue can't be the problem.

Me. too. Both my DVD player (Pioneer 59AVi) and my computer DVD drive spit out the disc with an error message. So, no audio or video is readable.
Doug
I'm guessing you could create a "backup" of the DVD using DVD-Shrink and tell it to set the region to 0.
You guys should read the reviews for these releases on Amazon.com. It'll give you an idea why SACD and DVD-A won't go anywhere in the US. Anytime anyone complains about the US releases not having SACD, they get slammed for it by other reviewers saying, "Who cares!? Most people can't play SACD anyway!" Really sad. I went and marked as many reviews "helpful" if the person clearly knew what they were talking about.
I'm guessing you could create a "backup" of the DVD using DVD-Shrink and tell it to set the region to 0.
.
This won't work unless your player plays PAL discs.
I can get these discs to play in my PC with Zoom Player and anydvd.
Lasersnuser 01-24-07, 02:24 PM Exciter, Ultra, Black Celebration and Construction Time Again are now available for preorder at Amazon UK, release date March 19.
See SA-CD.net for links.

I keep hearing on different sites that people prefer the audio on the DVD-V (5.1 DTS) over the 5.1 on the SACD. Maybe the US version isn't so bad then? Or could it be that the DTS is more compressed or something (dynamic compression) so people like it because it sounds "louder"..?
Chris Gerhard 02-22-07, 10:04 PM I have several of the SACD/DVD-V sets and think the 5.1 DTS audio is very good, but prefer the SACD. The DTS does sound louder and that made it difficult for my girlfriend to form an opinion when I did a comparison switching back and forth but we both agreed, the SACD sounds a little better.

rickneuropa 02-22-07, 11:49 PM I am an enormous dM fan and have had these DVDs for a month or so now. We recently purchased an Acura RDX which has DVD-Audio capability, but much to my dismay, the dM DVDs do not play. This may be a silly question - but is there anyway to convert them to DVD-Audio?
I am also a huge DM fan, with an Acura TL, and have all the DM remasters released so far in DVD 5.1, inlcuding the newest release, Playing the Angel....get this one too in the special SACD or DVD version....anyway, to my point. YES!!! You can convert the DTS 5.1 to DVD-A disc For those not in the know...the Acura DVD-A systems do NOT play DVD-V discs, only DVD-A, DTS encoded CD's or CD's.....here are the cheap (free software for 30 days) and easy steps to convert DVD-V 5.1 sound files to DVD-A:
1. Buy DVD-R discs (4.7g) the Acura system won't read the DVD+R's. You can use DVD+R DL (9 gig) as well, but they have a tendancy to have "issues" during playback.
2. Download DVD Audio Extractor, free for 30 days here http://www.castudio.org/dvdaudioextractor/
3. Download DVD-Audio Solo, free for 30 days here http://www.cirlinca.com/download.htm
Use DVD audio extractor to extract each DTS 5.1 track to a 5.1 lossless wave file. Once done (you can also extract the extra stereo 20 bit tracks as well with this software) use the DVD-Audio Solo program to write the 5.1 wave files to the DVD-R blank disc, creating a DVD-Audio format disc. That easy!
I have to say, I'm very impressed at the way they use the surrounds on these newly mixed 5.1 tracks! Playing the Angel is my favorite of these, the clearity, and bass extention is soo nice!! Speak and spell was very surprising at how well they used the surrounds, and hearing things I hadn't noticed before on the original CD. Also, the bass extention is sooo much better on the older releases! Very very well done!! Maybe it's just because I'm a biased DM fan drinking the koolaid...either way, this may be the only REAL synthpop band in HiRez surround!!!! I'm excited to hear Construction Time Again, and Black Celebration in 5.1......two of my favs.
BTW.....Huge Steelers fan here!!!
My order from CD-Wow still hasn't shown up... I placed in on the 12th of March...
Is this normal?
stormchaser 03-30-07, 03:42 PM Quank, I received my copies (of CTA and BC) from CDWOW yesterday. Have you checked your account with them to ensure that they've shipped?

My S&S and Broken Frame discs from them did take a while to deliver (maybe 2-3 weeks?), but they sent emails to notify me of delays. IIRC, they shipped from, Hong Kong.

I just got Violator SACD and can only say WOW!
stormchaser 04-01-07, 07:50 PM I really enjoy these too. Frankly, I need to do more comparisons with the DTS mix to see if SACD really helps these tunes or not. Still, the surround mixes are really engaging but not over the top.
I'm an idiot. I ordered Exciter and it's not out until May!
Lasersnuser 04-18-07, 08:38 AM I recently spent some time comparing the various audio tracks on Songs of Faith and Devotion, after I found the SACD sourround track to be somewhat lacking in the bass area.
I compared the following tracks: CD stereo, SACD stereo, DTS 5.1 and SACD 5.1.
As stated, I feel the SACD 5.1 track does not have enough punch in the bass. It seems somehow to be lost or greatly diminished in the mixing. Otherwise the surround mix is excellent, immersive and at times appropriately inventive. The possible exception is track one, which is rather messy.
The DTS 5.1 track has a bit more oomph in the bass area, but lacks the detail, clarity and openness of the SACD 5.1 track.
The winner, therefore, is in my opinion the SACD stereo track. It offers a significant improvement over the CD track in resolution and clarity, and retains and improves upon the punchy bass I feel is an essential component of the music on this album.
It will be interesting to see how Ultra and Exciter fare with respect to bass on the SACD surround track.

The DTS version may be producing more bass on your system because DTS will be using the LFE channel (the .1) and if you have your LFE gain set at +1dB or higher, it could be causing more bass - but only for Dolby and DTS.
That doesn't explain why the SACD stereo has more bass however. Maybe try setting your rear channels to "small" or "medium" so that the bass will be redirected to the fronts and/or sub instead of getting lost in your rears that can't reproduce it? (Just a guess on my part, I don't have a 5.1 input so I can only listen to DTS, DD and stereo stuff until I upgrade my receiver.)

I have a 5.0 setup (no subwoofer) with front speakers set to large (which they are) and surrounds and center set to small.
I'm pretty certain the lack of bass is inherent in the mix since other surround SACDs have plenty of bass on my system. There are also instances where there is good bass on the surround track on Songs.
I have, however, noticed on other releases as well that bass tends to get lost in the surround mix. An example would be the DVDA of David Gray's A New Day at Midnight. It is, of course, to some extent a matter of taste, plus the fact that one is often used to the CD stereo mix from before, which is likely to feature much more dynamic compression.

Go through the following link, and click "activate coupon". That will take you to CD-Wow. You can then try for a voucher for an additional $1 off your order. But if you search for Depeche Mode, you should see the SACD's for $15.95. I've used CD-Wow for my 6 DM SACD's, and they've all arrived perfectly. I'm not a huge DM fan, but I love these albums in surround.

I think there should be an area on their website to e-mail customer service. That's how I've heard of people contacting them in the past. And yes, their order tracking software is terrible, and I've never been able to find my past orders on their website. But nonetheless, my orders always seem to arrive, generally timely. Occasionally, some of the DM SACD's go on backorder, and they'll usually e-mail you to that effect. But they always end up arriving within a couple of weeks.
More importantly, hope you're enjoying the SACD's. They're darn good.

The release dates for these are being pushed back by Depeche Mode from what I found out last time. The website for the releases shows no date for Exciter.
