View Full Version : Custom Tickets Done For You
I didn't want to keep hijacking MikeWh's Excel Ticket Maker thread (a really cool tool) with the photoshopped tickets I've been making, so I decided to start this thread.
I have a lot of fun doing these tickets, and forum members have occasionally asked me to customize one of mine for their purposes, with their theater name, address, and other custom text.
So, I'm offering this as a service to the forum. I'll post what I've made for an event (Super Bowl, Oscars, Final Four, World Series, etc.), and if you're hosting a watch party for that event, and would like a customized ticket, let me know what changes you'd like, and I'll see what I can do.
The posted ticket will be generic, so if it will work for you, feel free to download it and use it.
I've also done tickets for movie nights; if you're hosting one and showing a specific feature presentation, let me know what you'd like.
No charge for the service, but if you'd like to make a donation for my time, just PM me for my PayPal ID; the choice is yours!
Lastly, I need to give credit to bugman72 who originally posted the PhotoShop file he created, and to MikeWh for his Excel Ticket Maker and popularizing the idea of creating custom tickets.

Here's the generic ticket for this year's Final Four. I plan on putting the actual school names in once they are determined. Enjoy!

Bravo, ND! Thanks for the service :)
taxman48 03-18-06, 08:35 AM ND: beautiful job, how about presented in Hi Definition 5.1 surround sound on the ticket? I use Mike's ticket maker as many times as I can with Superbowl and movie nights my lastest venture. I use allposters.com for my images. Once again thanks for posting the ticket and great job!!
Yes, taxman - that's a perfect example of a customization I can add. Since not everyone has HD (myself included), I left it off the generic version.
ND
htomei22 03-18-06, 01:34 PM That's very generous of you! Thanks.

MikeRich 03-20-06, 01:26 PM I just wanted to vouch for ND23 quality and excellent service. I contacted him several times for a super bowl ticket which he helped me with and made several revisions and got them to me in time to print for the big game.
I contacted him a second time for a ticket for an Oscar party we were having. Stellar work, and an awesome presentation.
I just wanted to say "thanks" again in public.
Mike
sosatyme72 03-20-06, 01:45 PM very cool of you ND!!!
Here's a ticket I did last night for sajandrew (Andy). He's nearly done with his theater, and wants to do a movie night for his daughter's upcoming 6th birthday party. Since it comes out today on DVD, he's thinking Chicken Little would be a good choice for the movie. Andy believes he has enough Photoshop skills to modify the text once he confirms date/time/etc., so the .psd file was sent to him via email this morning. Hope it goes well, Andy!

ND
ND,
Very nice service! Love the Star Wars ticks you posted awhile back that you used for your company's outing.
Scott
sajandrew 03-21-06, 01:56 PM Thanks again ND, my daughter will really like this. We used some popcorn looking invitations for her last movie party, but these custom tickets are way cooler, IMO.
Thanks,
Andy
You're welcome, Andy! I highly recommend printing these as 4"x6" glossy pics at your most convenient photo development vendor (Walgreens, WalMart, shutterfly, etc.). At 20 to 30 cents each, it's usually well worth it.
ND
Here's one done for cbaker, who wanted more of a generic movie night ticket without a specific date/time or movie. He requested a movie reel and popcorn theme, and I came up with this:
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/2953/movienight3sx.th.jpg (http://img111.imageshack.us/my.php?image=movienight3sx.jpg)
I can modify this with your theater name, if you're interested.
ND
And one for cp1966... for this Spring's Survivor finale. This is a work-in-progress. Anybody know for sure when the finale will air?

tony123 03-22-06, 01:49 PM ND, Great looking tickets! You've inspired me to take my movie nights up a notch with tickets!
Would you mind sending me the psd file for the generic? I'd like to use it as a model for my own if possible.
Thanks,
Tony (tragusa3@charter.net)
Scott Gammans 03-22-06, 02:05 PM LOL! What a great idea! The only problem I have is that my friends can NEVER agree on a movie until the last minute, so I would probably not be able to do something like this for my opening night party. :(
sega_97 03-22-06, 03:52 PM ND23,
Great idea. Never thought of that but would definitely add authenticity to my Home Theater. Would you also send me, if possible, the .PSD so I can customize it.
Thanks,
Ken

Now that the teams have been decided, if you're having a Final Four watch party, here's the updated generic ticket. If you'd like a customized one, let me know.

I have to admit that I'm one of those guys who likes to watch golf on Sunday afternoon in the summer, especially when it's the Masters.
Here's a design in case you're having friends over to watch it. Again, I can customize it with your theater name, HighDef-related text, surround sound, etc. Just let me know.

ND: can I use the Adobe photoshop 7 with the template that you made? I will be installing it tomorrow and want to fool around with some tickets.. Nice Kong work , where do you get all your background graphics from?
I don't see why PhotoShop 7 wouldn't work. I'm no expert, but I think a .psd file is a .psd file, and any program capable of working with one should be OK. And PhotoShop 7 is certainly capable.
I get the images on the web.
Good luck! Photoshop's not the most intuitive program in the world, especially for a Microsoft-savvy person like me...
Oh, and I really can't take credit for making the template. bugman72 gets all of that credit, plus kudos for making it available to us so we can have fun with it like this.

Worked fine for me, using Internet Explorer, but I also got a page of gibberish when clicking on the link using FireFox. If you're using FireFox, try using IE instead.

htomei22 04-02-06, 04:07 PM ND, Mattshack, or anyone else!!
Downloaded the template from Mattshack's site (thanks for hosting!), but cannot open it with Photoshop Elements. Notice that it's not a .psd file, but a .php instead. Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks for the help.
htomei
htomei22 04-02-06, 04:16 PM Nevermind.
As noted on another post you cannot download it using Firefox - the program gets messed up. Downloaded it with IE and it works fine.
Thanks again.

If you can please make me a ticket stub for this Sat's fight. Can you inlcude "Sosatyme Theatres" on it . as well as presented in 5.1 Surround-HD, starts at 9pm . Basically just like the other ones you've done for me as in #2 from the above post. I've included a image of the promo as well.

bugman72 05-02-06, 08:38 AM It's been a while since I've been on the forum and just happened to see this thread. How funny!! I'm glad that my PSD version of Mike's Excel Ticket maker is getting some use. The tickets look great ND.
And I'm sure this question has been answered already, but the PSD file that I sent ND was done in Photoshop 7. As long as your version of Photoshop will do text layers (I know that Photoshop Elements DOES NOT), then you should be able to use this file.
And one for cp1966... for this Spring's Survivor finale. This is a work-in-progress. Anybody know for sure when the finale will air?
I found the date for the finale, so I've updated the ticket for cp1966. If anybody else is hosting a Survivor watch party, and wants a customized ticket based on this one, let me know.

Awesome work! Only one minor thing and I deeply apologize for not mentioning it ... my wife is a huge Meg Ryan fan and will definitely be showing some of her movies.
Great job! Professional quality!

R_Willis 05-11-06, 07:37 PM You do AWESOME work ND23. An absolutely great contribution your making for free to us forum members. Thanks! Might need a ticket some day when I get my theater finished up.

I have Adobe Photoshop CS2. How does that compare to elements?
I have Adobe Photoshop CS2. How does that compare to elements?
Photoshop CS2 has more powerful features than Photoshop Elements. Elements is a poor-man's version of Photoshop, with just enough of the main features. You'll be good to go with CS2!
ND
Ingeborgdot 05-14-06, 09:59 PM I am new to it so I guess I will have to play a little and see what I have.

Colton,
I've added a couple of Meg Ryan shots (w/ Billy Crystal from When Harry Met Sally, and w/ Tom Hanks from Sleepless in Seattle). Hope she likes it!

ND
Ingeborgdot 05-14-06, 10:13 PM Those look great. How DO you do that? I'm trying.
I'm by no means an expert... I've just learned to select, copy, paste, resize, reorder, and adjust the transparency of the images. The text part is really easy - just use the text tool to insert a text layer, and then type in the text and change fonts, etc.
Layers are a bit tricky... totally new concept for most people.
Good luck!
ND
For sajandrew... I genericized the Movie Night ticket to say "please join us as we present" instead of a specific theater name. Hope others can make use of it as well.

I've been away from the forum for ages (enjoying 9 feet of High-Definition too much). Good to see this thread, ND. Great job. My thread was getting long too... so thanks for making a new one.
Maybe the moderator can redo my Ticket sticky thread and make it into a locked sticky thread with just two hyperlinks in it-- one for my thread and one for yours, so people can easily find yours, too.
Thanks Mike! I'm open to that... moderator, your call.

Yep, Terry - I should be able to do that. Sounds like we've got plenty of time... might be a couple of days before you see something - hope that's OK. May I assume you're a 'Husker fan, and you'd want the ticket theme to reflect that allegiance?

taxman48 08-05-06, 07:45 PM ND: every time I return to this link, your work is more and more fantastgic. How about a few starter steps on Photoshop so that we can try this great work ourselves?
Thanks!
I think the best starter steps would be:
1. Find the post in the Excel ticket maker thread where I zipped-up and attached bugman's .psd file. Right-click that attachment and save it to your hard drive.
2. Open the .psd file in an appropriate software program like Photoshop.
3. Start getting familiar with layers by opening the layers palette, and try making some layers visible/invisible, start adjusting the opacity of layers, etc. Layers was a totally new concept for me, and it took a while to get used to it.
4. Get familiar with text manipulation (important for doing tickets) by using a text tool like the Horizontal Type Tool to add some new text layers. Also modify the text in existing layers.
5. Try adding in your own image... first, open another picture in Photoshop, then use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to select a portion of the picture, and do an Edit-Copy to copy it to the clipboard, then pop over to the ticket and do an Edit-Paste to insert it into your ticket as a new layer. Now move it around, resize it, and adjust its opacity to your liking. Also get familiar with ordering the layers, with commands like move to front and send to back.
Good luck! Photoshop is not at all intuitive, in my opinion. I've said it before, for someone like me who is comfortable with Microsoft Office tools, learning Photoshop really took a whole LOT of trial-and-error. I still learn new things while doing these tickets, like taking the background out of those helmets so they appear to float over the image in the background.

GrantOv 08-10-06, 10:13 PM Hey ND,
Thanks for the inspiration, I recently ebayed Photoshop 6.0 (not a bad deal for <$100)and am having fun with my son preparing his invitations for the MTV VMA's at the end of this month. I've been able to fumble through and self teach myself the layers, text edit, paste pictures and transform sizes and dial opacity but one thing eludes me. The zipped example uses a background with the outlines and ticket format. I would like to play around with these colors and sizes but its been "rastorized". From what I know about images is that this is another word for not-editable. Would you mind pm'ing me one or more of your fancier templates loaded with pictures that don't have this background layer taken through the rastor process? How about the King Kong and Shield ones? Better yet, any words of advice at creating this first layer?
Thanks again for the great examples - we wish we could hear all the excitement that comes when his friends get these tickets in the mail!

Sorry, Grant, but all of my tickets use that same layer with the colored boxes and lines. I always start a new ticket by opening an old ticket and doing a Save As... and then I delete layers and start adding new layers. In the layer with the boxes and lines, I've not yet learned how to resize those boxes, though I did learn how to change the colors (which you can see in various examples posted in this thread). I would think you could use Adobe to draw new boxes and lines, and then group them into a single layer - you might try that. Someday I will!
To change the color in that layer with the boxes and lines, first select the layer, then go to the menu and click Enhance->Adjust Color->Replace Color...
This will hopefully open the Replace Color dialog, showing a small picture of the layer with the boxes and lines. Click on a color, and then use the Transform section's sliders to change the Hue, Saturation, and Lightness of the selected color. It takes some practice.
One of these days I'm going to create a new layer of boxes and lines, and change up the look of these tickets! But so far, bugman72's work is leveraged effectively.
Good luck!
ND
GrantOv 08-11-06, 08:25 AM Hey ND - thanks for the tip. This morning it occured to me what might be a very simple way to create a new background layer. Just use Excel or Visio to create your new layer - whatever you may like. Then copy and paste onto Photoshop. I checked it and no problem.
I likely will use this to create two new layers - one for each type or color of box, maybe one for an outline. One thing I noticed is that it may help to go quite large so that you don't need to stretch excessivly too much after you've dropped it into Photoshop. This should help keep lines the same thickness as you initially drew them with.
I still haven't played much with creating the very bottom layer but I think the ticket proportion is quite nice.
What do you think? Is this helpful?

Sorry, but i have a dumb question. How in the heck due you print out the 5 tickets on one page ? Because i can't seem to open it up in my print shop. Once again thank you for your service on making the ticket.

I'll assume you've already clicked on the thumbnail image, which opens up the a new browser window with the ticket shown on the imageshack site, and that you have clicked on that image two times to expand it to its original size (it will be quite large, depending on what resolution you run on your computer).
Assuming you're using IE, right-click the image and save it to your hard drive.
When I really want to make an impact, I upload this image to a photo printing site, and have them print multiple copies, depending on the number of tickets I need. Make sure you preview it to ensure it is not cropped incorrectly. Then either have them mailed to you, or go pick them up if printing locally. Cut 'em out, and you've got a nice, thick, glossy ticket for each guest.
Or, if printing at home, on maybe glossy photo paper, then yes, you're going to want to maximize the usage of that paper. What I do is open up a new document in Microsoft Word or Powerpoint, and insert the image as a photo, then resize it to the appropriate size. Then I copy that image and paste in another one, and move it around until it lines up next to the first. Repeat until you fill the page, then print. After printing, cut 'em out.
The attached zipped Powerpoint document might help explain it better.
Hope this helps...

Ash Sharma 11-15-06, 09:20 PM ND,
My Eight year old daughter came up with a great idea to use the house as backgoriund ticket instead of the Theater Render - Her logic (she is super smart) is that she wants the guests to be surprised to see the Theater so she does not want to give away as to how it looks on the ticket. Instead she would rather have the front of the house on the Ticket.
Thanks for the great tickets - I appreciate this.

How do you print the ticket out.? Do you import the image into a software package?
See post #116 in this thread for some instructions.
For this year's Super Bowl tickets, I did the following:
1. Open Photoshop Elements and created a brand-new canvas sized 6 inches wide by 4 inches tall (same size as a 4x6 photo).
2. Open my ticket in Photoshop Elements and selected the entire ticket, then hit control-C to copy it to the clipboard.
3. Navigate back to the 4x6 canvas and hit control-V to paste the ticket into the canvas. If necessary, resize the pasted-in image so it fits in the 6-inch width of the canvas. Move it so it hugs the top border of the canvas, and is centered in the width of the canvas.
4. Repeat step 3 to paste a second ticket into the canvas, and position it so it hugs the lower border. Choose the Save for Web option from the File menu, and save this as a .jpg file.
5. Now you've got 2 tickets in a single file, ready for upload to any photo-printing service. I uploaded mine to Costco's photo center, and printed 20 for 17 cents each. Choose the glossy finish. I picked them up on my way home from work.
6. Last night, after dropping off my daughter at her dance class, I went next door to Kinko's and used their paper cutter to slice each photo in half, giving me 40 tickets to distribute.
I did try to upload my original Super Bowl ticket image for this year to some photo centers (Walgreens, Costco) but their software cropped the image and I couldn't seem to make it work.
When I choose to just print them at home for a "lesser" event, I follow the steps in post #116, and I print using an inkjet printer on 8.5"x11" glossy photo paper.
Hope this helps!

olelucky 02-09-07, 06:54 PM Just wondering what everyone is printing the tickets on...would like to get some, would be great for my opening night coming up soon.
My best results are when I spend a couple of bucks and get them printed at Costco or Walgreens on glossy photo paper.
ND
I was at our local office supply chain store yesterday and saw some store branded printable ticket cardstock. Looked similar to the diy business card type (perfed edges), but for tickets like the ones being made here. I think they came in 8 1/2 x 11 sheets, not sure how many per pack, but looked like they would work nicely. Might need to resize to fit, not sure.

Just open up the ticket link (picture) ND23 gave you.
Click your right mouse button and "Save Picture" onto a CD, DVD, or floppy. Take it where you would like to have it printed.
:)
post 116 of this thread has some instructions for printing
meariesguy 02-14-07, 01:54 PM I guess I'm a liittle confused. When printed, what is the actual size of the ticket? Is it about 10.5" x 3.5". If so, can it me made smaller? Please help.
Thanks,
Elliot
Yes, you can resize the image to whatever size you'd like, prior to printing. You'll need some image manipulation software to do it.
How do you plan on printing your tickets? Will you print them at home? Or do you plan on uploading the image to a photo printing service and have them printed as 4x6 photos? If the latter, here's an image that's already resized to 4" tall by 6" wide, with two of your tickets stacked, so you can get two tickets per print. This one's ready to upload to your favorite photo printing service:
http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/1583/oscarsticketmeariesguyspc5.th.jpg (http://img235.imageshack.us/my.php?image=oscarsticketmeariesguyspc5.jpg)
If you plan on printing at home, I'd recommend the approach in post #116.
ND
meariesguy 02-14-07, 04:19 PM Thanks ND. I don't have any software for this nor can I print at home. I was going to use Costco to print. I appreciate what you've done with the 2-up ticket. I'm still not sure how to upload to Costco. Do I first click the image? Please bear with me. I'd appreciate the steps to get it to Costco. Thanks for your patience.
Elliot
OK, first, click on the image in my previous post above, which should open a new browser window which loads the imageshack page with your image. Note that this image is not the one you want... it has been resized to fit your screen. If you click on it, you'll get the originally-sized image. Right-click that (huge) image and save it to your hard drive in a location you can easily recall in a few moments.
Now, go to http://www.costcophotocenter.com. If you've never used this site before (and it sounds like you haven't), you'll first need to register. In the "get started" section, fill in your first name, last name, email address, a password you make up, and that same password again. Check the checkbox to acknowledge the site's terms and conditions, and click the "sign up" button. At some point, I think they ask you to enter your Costco membership number, but I can't go through the steps again since I'm already registered.
Once you're registered, and signed in, click the "upload photos" link in the yellow "get started!" box. Photos are uploaded into logical groups called albums, so you next need to choose what album to group your soon-to-be uploaded photo into. It will default to a new album with a title that includes today's date. Just leave it like that, and click the yellow "upload to this album" button.
Next page, click the yellow "one by one" link at the bottom of the page. Don't bother installing the QuickUpload tool - you're not going to need it for just one file.
Next page, click the "Browse..." button next to the text field for Photo 1. This will open a dialog box which prompts you to navigate to the place on your computer where you saved your ticket image file. Select your ticket file, and click the Open button. This will fill in the location of your ticket image in the text field for Photo 1. Now click the yellow "upload photos" button. Might take a minute or two, depending on the speed of your Internet connection.
Next page, click the yellow "see entire album" button.
Next page, click the "order prints" link in the yellow quick start box.
Next page, check the checkbox next to your ticket image, which specifies that this is the image you want to have printed. Click the yellow "choose these photos" button.
Next page, enter your Costco membership number and your contact phone number, and choose to pick up your photos at your local Costco Warehouse. Specify which warehouse by making selections in the state, region, and warehouse dropdowns. Click the yellow "continue" button.
Next page, choose the finish (I recommend glossy), and enter the quantity of tickets in the text entry field for the size you want (4x6). Remember, you'll get two tickets out of each print. For my Super Bowl party, I wanted 40 tickets, so I ordered 20 prints. Click the yellow "continue" button.
Hopefully you can figure it out from here... I don't want to go further on the Costco site and accidentally order photos I really don't need to order. Good luck!
ND
meariesguy 02-15-07, 02:26 PM Thanks so much for the explanation. I must admit I feel like I'm in the first grade again. Appreciate all you've done.

I'm interested in some tickets for March Madness or the NCAA tournament. Is it too early to start thinking about that?
Nope, not too early. See the early posts in this thread, where I did a Final Four ticket (for the 2 games on Saturday to determine who will go to the championship game). I could easily use that same ticket design, and replace last year's Final Four logo with this year's (assuming I can find a good one), and update the dates, and teams, etc.
If you're interested in having tickets made, it's best to start with the actual event you have in mind. The National Championship game? The 2 Final Four games? The opening round of games for The Tournament? A conference tournament final? etc.
Let me know...
ND
Thanks. I'll be interested in some of the opening games on that first Friday or Saturday night. I'm a Texas Tech fan, so IF they make the dance then I may want tickets based on when they play. Awesome work. I'll definitely let you know.

A couple of more I recently did, though I doubt they're very re-usable for any of you...
First, for my daughter Makena's 7th birthday party, we let her have a movie night with her friends from school and church, and she got to choose the movie. She chose a movie she received from Santa this past Christmas: My Little Pony - The Runaway Rainbow, which she has now seen approximately seventeen times. She and her sister spent the entire night telling all the other girls what was coming next.
http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/668/mylittleponywf7.th.jpg (http://img168.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mylittleponywf7.jpg)
Second, a neighbor friend who was impressed by this year's Super Bowl ticket asked if I would make a ticket for her son's birthday - a trip to a local college baseball game.

bugman72 03-15-07, 02:57 PM It's been a while since I've used my Photoshop ticket maker, so I decided to dust it off this week. My daughter is turning 4 on the 4th of April and we're having a little movie party on the 25th for a few of her friends. She picked the movie out and I made the invites accordingly.

Cool! I noticed doing ticket "backs" is a new trend, perhaps started by jikkjack. What do you guys do with the back image? Glue it to the front?
It's like another canvas to do more creative images, etc.
ND
bugman72 03-15-07, 04:19 PM What I did was make the back image's canvas just a bit bigger in Photoshop. Then, when I printed them, I did all of the fronts at one-per-page (a bit wasteful, but I have PLENTY of 80lb cardstock) and centered both vertically and horizontally on the page. Then, I simply flip the page over and print the backs in the same fashion. Because of the backs being a bit larger, I have a bleedover area that is easily cut off.
Sorry for your loss, RxMan... 84-75. I had your Red Raiders upsetting BC and losing in the second round to Georgetown in my bracket.
ND
I'm surprised they lost the way they did. Anyways, my work schedule prevented me from hosting a March Madness event on opening weekend. I'm definitely going to make use of a ticket for some event at the house in the near future though. Can I Print Tickets From Microsoft Office Picture Manager?
Thank You
How's this? I changed the usual "this date only" verbiage to say "this game only" instead.

I'm not sure about printing via Microsoft Office Picture Manager... I don't know much about that program (sorry).

I just leave 'em white, though creating a "back" image is becoming popular. I'm afraid I don't have anything for that, at least not yet.

Here's a ticket for the upcoming superfight on HBO between Floyd Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya. This one's for gibby2003 - I can customize it for anyone else.

This one's for GISMO1, and will also be used by Volley in a ticket window project:

By the way, as a favor to GISMO1, I was able to upload the ticket to Yahoo! Photos, and have them printed at a Target Photo Center near him, even though it was halfway across the country from me. All he has to do is show up in an hour and pay for them. I can offer this service to anyone else who doesn't want to mess with printing them at home or uploading them to a photo printing service. (and thanks for the generous donation, GISMO1!).

This one's for tomr, and I understand it will also be used by volley for inclusion in a custom ticket window graphic. Good luck (and thanks for the generous donation, Tom)!
