I looked & didn't find a thread for the new Sony remote so I thought I'd start one.

I've had the RM-AX4000 for about 2 months now, overall I like it.
It's nice to have all my equipment controlled by one remote.
To have descrete codes for the inputs on my SXRD makes things easier too.

About the only thing that bothers me is the same thing that bothers me about all touch screens, the lack of feel on the screen, I have to look at the screen most of the time to see what button I'm hitting.
I'm sure this will be lessened as I memorize the buttons but it is a pain to have to put on my reading glasses to see the butons on the remote.

I got a great deal on mine at Buy.com (around $120), Here's some more info I found.

Windows XP drivers for RM-AX4000 (http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=RMAX4000&UpdateType=Everything&SelectOS=7)

Just got this remote last week. I read all the bad reviews about programming it but figured I could breeze through it as I already have a av2100. The fact I got a brand new one for 99 bones helped to. Well I was the programming was a breeze I had it up and running and tweaked out with all the macros in about a hour. Fine tuned the settings such as backlight and tone settings and I love it. The only downfall I see is the buttons on the touchscreen are not completely customizable. (if that is even a word). Overall this remote is a A-

I got mine at Buy.com (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=201684968&loc=111&sp=1) for $119

I would imagine since it's a Sony it will have no problems with operating other Sony products.

I am leaning toward the new sony remote over the Harmony 880. I was curious if this will control A lutron maestro Ir Light switch. Also I want it to control my HK 235, but i dont haver the remote for it since it was damaged when HArman shipped it to me. Can the sony still learn the commands for the HK 235 without learning from the old remote. I see it says it has PC programing cababilities but i have read they dotn work well or are for macros. ???? Any help>???
Thanks

On My RMAX4000 I used the old remotes to set up.
I had to push the power button on most of the equipment & the remote did the rest, However there are codes you can punch in & Harmon Kardon codes are included.
What is the HK 235 & I'll see if my paperwork shows a code for it.

The Harman Kardon 235 is the 7.1 Channel reciever If you could check that would be great know.

There is a code for Harmon Kardon recievers in the preset code list for the RMAX4000.

With all the threads about the Harmony remotes it seems it is a popular choice, for those sony cammander owners what helped you pick this remote over other?
Thanks

After playing with both remotes at a local dealer the Sony felt more intuitive, meaning I seemed to know how to operate it as soon as I picked it up.
Also with most of my equipment being Sony I knew I wouldn't have any problems with a Sony remote controlling everything.

i didnt see this documented anywhere. maybe it is but i couldnt find anything about it

* this pertains only if you're setting up the remote using the remote itself and not the pc-software

if you want at the end of a macro to have the macro switch to a component screen, as the last step of your macro select the component and press the 'light' button

this saves you the extra step of selecting a component after a macro has been run. took me hours to figure this out. now my parents press one button and the tv changes input, the cable changes to their favorite channel, and the remote's screen changes to cable making the volume/channel buttons active

I can't get this thing to function correctly at all. I have an Onkyo TXSR603X, Scientific Atlanta HD cable box from TW, Sony DVPNS70H DVD player and a KDFE60A20 TV. It will not change the inputs on the TV correctly at all. It just randomly picks inputs whenever I hit the xPress function. It won't open the tray on my DVD player for some reason and it can't find the correct codes for the 603, it just guesses.

Anyone have any insight into getting this to work before I scrap the whole thing and get a Harmony?

Yes, then you add the missing commands via learning. I own 7 dtivos, so I had to abandon preset codes altogether and teach each and every command for 7 tivos.

In ax4000? there isn't one. The first sony universal remote to have code for the current line of dtv receivers is the vl600, code in it is sat 3214.

Yeah pretty much. There are a lot of codes pre-set and it will learn others directly from the remotes. I have TV, cable box, video, AV amplifier and DVD. For these , even though they were mainly Sony and had codes pre-set, I still taught it some different functions to work in the way I wanted.

I got the latest software off the Sony site as apparently the original version that comes with it is a bit duff. I had no problems using the software. It took a little while to get the macro functions working properly, but that's partly because my TV is inconsistent in the way it selects the AV channels. Other than that it has been a dream to have. The display is clear and responds well, the IR seems to have good range and power and programming via USB is quick and easy.

Best of all, I got mine for £50 on eBay, whereas to replace my broken AV remote from Sony would have cost about £150! Far more functionality for a third of the price.

You'll have no problem controling all of those.

I have mine controling my TV (SXRD), Surround reciever, CD player, DVD player (all Sony ES), DirecTV HR20, 2 JVC VCR's & a Play station 2.
It has room for more if needed.

Try looking on the sony website under customer care. Once you get to the support page for the RM-AX4000, there is a place you can get codes from. It seems that these code sets are a bit more up-to-date than the printed code sheets that are shipped with the remote.....I've notice quite a few more codes that were added there. Maybe they have a new code for your device....it's worth a shot.

On a different note.......anyone know why a sony remote can't send a "tray open/close" signal to a sony dvd player? I've got the RM-AX4000 and it works great, but I can't open/close the tray on my NC85H dvd changer. I've tried both the sony preset and physically programming/teaching the open/close button command and neither work.

I had trouble with this on both my DVD and video players, then found that it's simply a case of holding the eject button. After a slight pause you get a second beep (if you've got key sounds turned on) then the eject command is sent.

Hope that helps.

I've tried both the sony preset and physically programming/teaching the open/close button command and neither work.

Actually, I figured out my problem....I didn't remove the preset command from the button....and then programmed the new/learned signal on top of it. Also, some how I had a hold command set up for the key....must have been from the preset.

Anyway....once I deleted everything for that button and re-learned the command, it works without a hitch.

So far I'm really enjoying this remote. It has little bit of a learning curve at the onset of programming via software....but once that is overcome, it not that difficult at all to program.

Anyone know how to edit the 'ALL OFF' macro on the RM-AX4000? I've had to program my some of my components with presets and learning. I just want the 'ALL OFF' to use the learned 'Power' command rather than the preset. Or do I have to reprogram the device completely by learning, then reprogram my macros? My main problems are with my AVR (Onkyo TXDS898) and FIOS TV (MOTO QIP 6412-2). Thanks.

Could you tell me what - if any - advantages this has over the 2100? I have a bad cold - and was zonked today - and I managed to program the 2100 for my relatively new Yamaha 5 disc CD changer - and my relatively new Panasonic plasma. Even works the TVGOS feature (which surprised me). Only problem with my 2100 is it's old - and the buttons are starting to stick a bit. So I'll probably have to buy something new in the next year or so. Robyn

I need some real help. This is the first time I've had a remote like this. First of all, I was able to program my remote to work on all my components one at a time.

Mitsubishi TV
Sony DVD - 5 Disc
Sony Home Theatre System
Direct TV DVR

I set up a Xpress Key to "Watch TV" and "Watch DVD'. But when I use it, it only Controls my Home Theatre and DVD. It does not turn on or change the input of my TV. Now is the part I don't understand. When the remote connected to the USB port the Xpress button works. But as soon as I disconnect the USB cable it no longer works. I don't know what to do. Please Help.

Also in order for me to change the input on my TV from Sat to DVD I have to push the input key on my TV remote twice.

Replacing my old AV 3000. It's still good but the buttons to change from one device to another wore out.

My question about this unit is...

I'd like to set up so SD cable does not go through my A/V amp. Can you set up the volume control so that it will control the TV volume directly in one mode and the a/v amp in another?

On the 3000, the volume control only controls one device. You have to have soft keys control the volume on the tv

Thanks!

Like others, I added the AX4000 to the AV2100 I've had for several years (the 2100's keys beginning to stick more and more). While I was able to use the AX4000 software to program my components (Sony KP-51WS520 HDTV, Onkyo TX-SR502 Amp/Rcvr, Sony DVP-NS7757 DVD, Scientific Atlantic 8300H HD DVR/cable controller (Time Warner), I've been unsuccessful in getting the AX4000 to use the Onkyo for volume control, regardless of which component is on the remote's screen. The instructions state that you can press the Commander Off and Muting buttons simultaneously, but the resulting screen does not have the "SET" function flashing or selectable, and the "Volume" function does not appear at the bottom of the screen.

Has anyone who used the AX4000 Remote Editor to program their remote been successful in "setting the volume of visual components when connected to an audio component?" If so, how????

The AX4000 should be able to learn the commands if the presets don't exist. I also have a Harmony 890 (rf model) for my other system and I have to say, that I've been impressed by the Harmony's database of presets. The Sony looks better, but the Harmony feels better in the hand (I guess I prefer buttons). If only the Sony had RF....

Anybody know what the "new & improved" AX4000A does, that the old one doesn't? I wondered why the 4000 was available at bargin basement prices ($59usd), and now know why. Apparently the 'A' hasn't even been released yet, but the price is back up to $199.
Having just aquired a Sony KDL-40XBR2 HDTV, Sony DAV-FX900W DVD/5.1 home theater, and Motorola Cox HD/DVR cable box, I'm in need of remote consolidation (along with an older Toshiba VCR and Sony Hi8mm VCR)..

Right now I can't decide on the AX4000, AX4000A, or Harmony 880..........

Not sure what the "A" means, I'm guessing they may have added Tivo functionality, but I would think that's all software driven (their website doesn't show any physical differences). I have an ax4000 and remember that I had to program my D* Tivo functions.

As far as the Harmony 880, I would recommend the 890 (~$100 more) which would put you in the RF world as opposed to IR. There have been times where I wished my Sony was RF, but then I remember that it was < $200 (and apparently now, you can get them for <100 unless you want the 'a' version).

I have a Harmony 890 as well as the sony ax4000 and I have to say that the harmony was pretty easy to program, but if you want to do tweaks (macro programming), they're about even. The Sony seems to update faster, (my 890 needs to update both the remote and the RF receiver), but Harmony's db of remote commands seems to be more up to date than Sony's. Both can have issues learning commands.

If you want to stay below $200, I think it's really a crapshoot between the AX4000 and the 880. The real driver is your personal preference for ergonomics. I'm finding that I prefer the shape of my 890 (same as 880) over the 4000 b/c I can operate it with one hand whereas the 4000 almost always needs two hands.

The only other thing would be price as I think you can get the 4000 pretty easily for under $100.

If you go with the 890, you're still under $300 AND you have RF so you don't have to worry about LOS issues. To me, that's a function well worth the premium. I'm waiting for the Harmony 1000 to ship (that will replace my SonyAX4000). I figure it will be much cheaper than a Philips Pronto or Crestron solution.

Just got this yesterday from UPS. I got it for around 70 dollars. I called SONY and asked for the code to the new BDP-S1 blu ray and they don't have one. They said you have to use the learn mode. (very bad customer service) This is replacing the old 3000 because the volume button doesn't work anymore and I started using 3 remotes again. It does not work with a Mac (Bad customer service). I remember something about transferring all info from one remote to another. It was in the 3000 manual. I will go and try it between these two remotes.

I am having programming problems with this remote. First off I have a sony kp46wt520 TV that has the twin viewing feature and the ax4000 2 pic button doesn't work!!! Are you kidding me? Anyone else having this problem, or am I retarded? The only reason I bought the Sony remote is because my TV and DVD player are Sonys and I figured all the features would be programmed in. Also, it could not find a code for my Onkyo hts790, and the learn features are kind of iffy. The digital cable remote is missing about half the buttons too. I expected a lot more out of this remote, thinking about returning it if I don't get these problems ironed out. I'm sure its not all the remotes fault, but I don't like taking the blame for anything ;)

The timing on the learning function with these units is a little tricky. It seems like there's a pretty specific rhythm you need to get into, and it's not very intuitive -- I wish I could be more helpful, but if I recall correctly, start with this: after clicking the learn button in the software, give yourself one extra beat before firing the other device.

I was going nuts at first when I got mine -- and thought it was unable to learn codes for several of my components... but after experimenting with timing, I've gotten it to learn every single thing I've needed it to....

My TV does not respond either when I program a Xpress Key for WATCH TV or WATCH DVD. Or sometime it works, but wrong TV input. I really like the remote, had some issues first (user error) but I think it is a really slick remote. Even programmed my Lutron Maestro dimmer switch to the TV. Any help with programming Xpress Keys is greatly appreciated.

Hi. Sorry to quote from a very old message, but I also need the USB drivers. Does anyone out there have one they can post or email to me? The Sony website does not have the USB driver - only the editing software.

Thanks.

I got this remote from a friend of mine. He lost the driver CD. I too didn't have the luck to find its driver anywhere on the net. Without the driver, the editing software won't work. I cannot have any features superior than RM-AV3000.

I really appreciate if someone could share the driver.

I am leaning toward the new sony remote over the Harmony 880. I was curious if this will control A lutron maestro Ir Light switch.

Yes it can!

You can download the software from www.sonystyle.com. Click on Customer Care, then go to the downloads section... it's pretty easy to find. Good luck!

after you download the software, run it. think its a compressed file, once you have extracted the file, the software creates a folder:

c:\drivers\sonyusb <=== this is how i had mine..

point the install process to this folder.

Thank you for your advice, DaylightSM.

I went to the Customer Care section - Downloads/Drivers, chose "RM-AX4000" on the next page. Then the only software/driver I've found is still AX Remote Editor Update. No other driver available. Actually I think that's probably the same link and software I got on Sony's website earlier. Is there anything I did wrong?

Thanks. But as I said above, I only found the Editor software. And it didn't create a folder like "sonyusb" anywhere during its installation. Would appreciate your futher help.

Hi M.D.:

I would have thought that the Editing software file would have included the drivers in it. I actually lost my original RMAX4000 CD quite some time ago, and needed to do a fresh install on a new computer. Downloading and installing the editing software did everything to initialize and use the product.

I did some additional poking around the Sony website, and haven't been able to find any file that is *only* the driver. Sorry to have not been more help -- I'll post here again if I find anything.

That's really nice of you, thanks.

Without a PC, I found AX4000 is not better than my trusty old AV3000. AX4000's total lack of hard component bottons is not convenient at all, while AV3000 has 6 direct component bottons. And 4000's manual is not as detailed as AV3000's. I have to figure out myself how to cycle through 3 different lables on each botton on the LCD, while it's clearly stated how to do that on AV3000's manual. But AX4000's cool blue backlight looks much better than AV3000's dim green one.

For people really don't care that much of PC backup, I still recommend AV3000, if you can find it new.

I might change my mind if I could get the driver and use the remote editor software for a while, to get the most advanced features out of AX4000.

I appreciate a lot if someone can help me getting the driver.

I don’t think the CD includes a driver and I don’t think you need one.

I’m going to take a wild swing at this, so, sorry if it’s a big miss……

When you say “Without the driver, the editing software won't work”, do you, by chance, mean that the Back, Next, Save and Exit buttons in the AX Remote Editor software are missing?

If so I have a link, but the AVS forum software won’t let me post it until I make two more posts!!! If you want to find it yourself: Go to the Sony AX4000 support site; choose FAQ; type in “Editor” and. on the resulting page. choose “I need to troubleshoot...” in the dropdown menu.

Thank you guys. I really appreciate all your help.

Both the "software update" and "everything" links has only one software, the Remote editor.

Please check your PM for my email. Hope it's not too big a problem for you. Thank you.

When I said the editor won't work, it's because the software cannot find the remote connected to my computer, without a driver properly installed.

I assume the right steps are installing driver for the remote first, so my computer knows when it's connected; then install and use the remote editor software to configure the remote.

I followed your instruction and went to AX4000's FAQ. No, none of the 12 questions covers my problem when I choose “I need to troubleshoot an issue” in the dropdown menu.

Sorry if that didn’t help.

Although I own the AX4000, I don’t know it all that well, plus, unfortunately, I’m away and won’t be near it until maybe the weekend.

I had the dpi problem and, man, was that frustrating! The problem/solution wasn’t even listed then. I spent a long time thinking I had a driver problem before eventually calling Sony but, they didn’t have an answer either. Anyway…..

Again, I could be wrong but, I seem to recall that the instructions for installing the driver are misleading and that it may actually use WinXP’s native support for USB. (You do have WinXP or Win2000?) Maybe someone can pop the CD in, “Explore” it and report what’s on it. – I’m pretty sure it only came with that one, single CD that includes the software. (No second driver CD.)

Fwiw, I just “Searched” my computer (WinXP) and I don’t appear to have a "sonyusb" folder anywhere either but, the remote is recognized when connected and I can program it.

With all your help, I finally figured it out.

No, I don't need a separate USB driver for this remote. The driver is already contained in the Remote Editor software CD. The difference is I downloaded the Editor as one single compressed file, while I assume the original retail CD has the Editor uncompressed into several installation files, among those there's a USB driver file named RmAx.sys.

So, for those of you download Remote Editor from Sony's website, here's how to get the driver.

You can just uncompress the file into a new folder. Should be 10 files in it, including RmAx.sys. Plug the remote in. When windows prompts you for a driver, just point windows to find the driver in that folder. After installation, the remote will be recognized as a RMAXUSB device. Then you can install the Remote Editor by running Setup.exe in the foler.

Thank you all for your kind help and enjoy this remote.

Just spent a very frustrating day programming this thing! No problems learning all the equipment codes and setting up the component side of things - all codes worked A OK after downloading to remote. BUT - when it comes to Xpress and System Control, well that is another matter. Can set up a system control which tests Ok and emulates Ok in software (and operates equipment correctly) but will not control all equipment when a system control is run direct from the remote.
Anyone out there had issues like this? Help much appreciated.

It seems every couple of days I have to keep downloading the information for the Xpress functions. It works fine for a few days, then the TV won't respond, or the cable box won't work. The individual remotes all keep their information, but the Xpress features won't retain information for some reason... Anyone else having this problem or any way to resolve this?

Thanks,

I am about to buy AX4000 and just wanted to check with you guys to make sure it has the timer function.
I need to have the remote change channel on my satellite receiver at preset times for recording shows on different channels.

If anyone knows of a cheaper way to do this, please let me know.

From AX Remote Help

About the Timer function
The Remote Commander (RM-AX4000) can perform a programmed action automatically at a scheduled time every day or on particular days. This is called a "Timer function."

You can set up to eight Timer functions with the following options.

Timer ON/OFF

Switches ON/OFF each Timer function.

Key Label

When you press the TIMER button on the Remote Commander, "Timer keys" showing a Timer function are displayed at the bottom of the display.

The default labels of each Timer key are shown as "PROG1" to "PROG8," which you can change.

Actions to be performed

In Standard mode you can set an XPRESS procedure to operate at a scheduled time. In Advanced mode you can set a "Timer macro" (Action list) to operate at a scheduled time.

Time

Sets the operation time (hour, minute, AM/PM) for a Timer function.

Day

Sets the day for a Timer function to operate. The default setting is "Everyday."

I created a separate directory for my remote project and performed a "SAVE AS" to direct the remote editor program to save the files there. It creates an "ir" directory with multiple directorys below that for each component programed into the remote. So ... it creates many files in the project, not one. I did this on by back up server and have had no problems.

I've had my 4000 for about 9 months now. I had a 3000 before that and loved it, but between the batteries dying when I was out of town and my little niece's obsession with finding and removing batteries from things, the 3-4 hours of setup wore me down, hence the upgrade to the 4000. Actually, I would classify it as a lateral move at best.

I do miss the physical component buttons and the bullet-proof learning of the 3000, but the config backup in the 4000 is huge feature for me.

My problem is this. The System Controls seem to occassionally miss a step from the Action list. Has anyone else experienced this or have a fix? My 3000 performed these flawlessly.

Also, the 3000 conveniently left the remote screen on the device of the last macro command, while the 4000 does not. I finally figured out there is a "Jump" command (I admit it, I never really read the manual), but it doesn't appear to work. Any ideas?

Thanks,
-Brad

I figured out my Jump problem. Apparently you need to check the box on the download pop-up regarding sending all data to unit. Seems odd that you'd need to do that, but it worked.

Yes, then you add the missing commands via learning. I own 7 dtivos, so I had to abandon preset codes altogether and teach each and every command for 7 tivos.

Which device icon did you assign to the DTivo? Was it the SAT or the DVR?
By any chance where u able to assign a particular button from the Tivo remote to the power button on the AX4000? If so which button did u use? What if any buttons were you not able to program?
If I use the predefined code do I really lose the ability to customize the express settings? Any input much appreciated.

USB drivers are on the cd that came with the remote, for most Windows OS's. They don't have any for Vista and after contacting Sony they pointed me to Sony Direct Sales so I could possibly purchase the driver.

If you plan on switching to Vista, purchase the RM-AX4000 with caution.

I am not familiar with the RM-AX4000 I use the RM-AV3000. Can you directly input discrete codes into a 4000? If not you can buy a cheap One For All remote from Radio Shack (15-2142) for about ten dollars. This remote can be programmed with the discrete code for the function that you want and then you can teach it to your Sony. If interested post back and I will get you more info.

Unfortunately I don't have the answer, but I'd also be interested in the solution.

My Denon components (receiver, DVD player) have separate "power on" and "power off" buttons on their original remotes. These seem to be the components for which the ALL OFF button doesn't work.

Any ideas?

Is anyone using this remote with a ReplayTV? I have a 5000 series one and I can't seem to get the Quick Skip to work consistently. I've had this remote for about a year now and even though it works perfect with all my components, I can not get it to successfully control my TivoHD. It is impossible to use to scroll through Tivos menu. If I am using the up/down arrows, somehow the signal for the right arrow will be sent to the Tivo (without even pressing it). Anyone else have this problem and know how to fix it? I've tried the preset codes for tivo and have tried relearning many times already.

I'm looking for a remote that can change an analog cable box with timer macros - looks like this device is the only one out there than can change "at 8pm to channel 29", so I can use a DVR/DVD recorder in a location where there are no timers for the STB.

Does anyone use this remote for that purpose ? (I believe I read it's limited to 8 macro timers) Anything I should know before buying it?

Any alternatives?
Thanks - Scotty
