***********

This calendar contains all firm titles that are going to be released for the American market.

There are many other lists, but they are arranged alphabetically, or by format and/or studios. Here I intend to make a list by release date, so that anyone can use it to see what is available at any given moment. I'll update it as more information is disclosed.

To qualify, a title must have been announced by the studio (with price and availability date), or be available for preorder (not availability notification or obvious placeholder) at two different North American sites.

Data followed by an asterisk are unconfirmed, based on general claims by the studio or sources close to it.

Note all data are subject to change at any time until release date.

Grubert, several more dates have been confirmed by Robert for HD-DVD releases.

madpoet, all the HD DVD titles confirmed (Million Dollar Baby, Last Samurai, Phantom, Serenity, Doom, Apollo 13) are already there. (I just noticed Doom was under the wrong date - I moved it down.)

And as I said, I won't post a title until I get : (a) An official announcement or press release, or (b) two consistent preorder availability hits from different sites.

It might well be that Batman Begins will actually be released when you said, but I'm not going to post that just because a shop manager says so.

Great summary. One possible enhancement would be to list audio formats such as DD,DTS,DD+,DD-HD,DTS-HD. It don't think we know what the Universal titles use yet, but for the Warner titles all 3 have DD+ and Phantom also includes DD-HD. dvdempire lists "DTS Surround" for Chronos while Amazon says "Hi-Res DTS 96/24 Digital Surround Sound". So I would guess DTS is close enough.

Thanks, Anthony. I did as you said, only putting decimal points back in place ;) .

Thanks, jschefdog. I'll try to think of some way of putting the audio specs that isn't too unwieldy in such a primitive table.

Video can be expanded as well, with resolution information and even average bitrate if we ever find out about that.

Lionsgate titles have an asterisk, because according to thedigitalbits they are likely to be pushed back to June 27. As soon as that is official, I'll move the titles down.

Sure, and they'd even through in a HD DVD player with the purchase :) You would have to order it from that Japanese site.

It's a strange situation. Studios sometimes (often?) don't distribute their own movies overseas. So while Resident Evil is a Blu-Ray title in the U.S., it's an HD DVD title in Japan, because Toshiba distributes it there.

Not so fast:

To qualify, a title must have been announced by the studio (with price and availability date), or be available for preorder (not availability notification or obvious placeholder) at two different North American sites.

I added Serenity, Doom and Apollo 13 because they're available for preorder on the bestbuy and amazon sites (target doesn't count as an independent source from amazon).

As soon as those titles appear on another site, I'll add them.

Grubert, I would love to know a logical reason behind the two different NA sites and territorial restriction, especially considering the G1 players are supposedly HD-DVD region free. Right now I'm under the impression you want to keep the list biased towards your personal preferred format.

efralope

I can understand not counting Japanese titles...

after all, I have little reason to look foward to them and have them clutter up an easy-to-read and accessible list. Once any of their titles get announced for the US, I can understand adding them to the list.

I suggest a separate thread (or 2, one for European titles?)...

That said, considering the fact that a major retailer is offering them for pre-order, I would at this point add them to the list, especially since we are so close to release that it's unlikely there will be a major change, but I can understand the hesitation considering the mess this launch has been.

That said, it shouldn't be long before things dates get stabilized

**edit:

btw, I am not suggesting Grubert so a separate thread, but if someone is inclined to looking to foreign titles or the world market then they might be interested; I was just suggesting that that would be better than adding non-US titles to the list...

but like I said, at this point I'd add the Universal releases; considering their conservative approach as it is, it seems even a small indication on their part through a retailer means they are set in stone...

Grubert

Grubert, I would love to know a logical reason behind the two different NA sites and territorial restriction, especially considering the G1 players are supposedly HD-DVD region free. Right now I'm under the impression you want to keep the list biased towards your personal preferred format.

Firstly, my intention is to keep this list as reliable and free from speculation and rumour as possible.

The most authoritative source for upcoming titles is a press release or announcement by the studio itself, such as this one (http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6316722.html) from Warner.

If that is not available (apparently because the studio decides that it is a 'soft launch' and decides to release the titles without any announcement), then the next best thing is having the title available for preorder. However, etailers are much more prone to error so I don't consider them definitive; hence the rule of two different sites for corroboration. The precedent when Walmart put up some Warner titles available for preorder, just to pull them suddenly, reinforces the validity of the standard I have set.

Secondly, with regard to the exclusion of titles from overseas markets, it has been common practice in forums such as dvdtalk to treat those titles separately, as only a minority of the community will be interested or be bothered to buy from overseas. If you want to set up a "non-NA HD DVD/Blu-ray release list", be my guest.

Finally, you say that you are "under the impression" that I want to "keep the list biased" towards my personal preferred format. That is your own interpretation of my reporting decision, but let me address it anyway. If you have followed my ongoing 'Distilled news' threads (if you haven't yet done so, check the threads for February (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=639010 ), March (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=651001), and April (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=7428128#post7428128)), you'll know that never have my personal preferences got in the way of my reporting, and that the information I have compiled has been appreciated by many forum members, regardless of format allegiance. Hence such an implication as you have written is unfounded.

A guy goes to the store there is a display with BD movies, he looks at the HD-DVD player and movies, asks the sales rep what is BD and will it play on the HD-DVD player or DVD player. The sales rep says no, and tells him that soon the BD player will be out for those movies.

On the other hand it is studios that will decide when movies will be released. So until they say something, they are the authorities sources.

Grubert, I would love to know a logical reason behind the two different NA sites and territorial restriction, especially considering the G1 players are supposedly HD-DVD region free. Right now I'm under the impression you want to keep the list biased towards your personal preferred format.

These are fair criteria to ensure accuracy of the information. Short of official confirmation, double retail listings is more reliable and suggests they share the same non-public information. It avoids the problem of one retailer jumping the gun with releases (not uncommon so far).

This list also addresses specifically the NA launch effort. If it is to be regarded as a NA launch effort (and it seems most relevant) then it is quite logical to include only NA releases.

These criteria equally apply to both formats. I am sure it is also not by chance that there will be more Blu-ray titles than HD-DVD titles launching.

right now there is no reason to announce delays (assuming one does not care about honesty).

No doubt you'll see ALOT of delays closer to the target date of BRD actual player sales. the FUD/Hype is in full effect as these titles are listed and numerous and seem to overshadow a competitor. Bluray also has people like grubart and viral marketers making lists which favorably portray them, even ones that obviously are subject to change.

The Blu-ray titles are each listed twice in online retail (I assume). HD-DVD has the same opportunity for such, given how finished the format is supposed to be. So why is it not as numerous? How is it disadvantaged? Would like to hear if you have any thought on this.

right now there is no reason to announce delays (assuming one does not care about honesty).

In that case, Lionsgate get credit for honesty, because they just announced a software delay (despite insinuations that they were releasing their launch titles anyway because 'we are still getting paid').

No doubt you'll see ALOT of delays closer to the target date of BRD actual player sales. the FUD/Hype is in full effect as these titles are listed and numerous and seem to overshadow a competitor.

Allow me to enlighten you:

- FUD is 'disseminating negative and vague or inaccurate information'. Is this list vague and/or inaccurate? No, on both counts. Is it negative? Depends on your own interpretation of the data. If it is negative but specific and accurate, it is not FUD.

- Hype consists of grossly exaggerating the advantages of a product.

Bluray also has people like grubart and viral marketers making lists which favorably portray them, even ones that obviously are subject to change.

First, my username is "Grubert" not "grubart".

Second, this forum exists precisely to share information, which is what I'm doing now. If you want to crack down on viral marketing on this forum, kudos to you - but you're barking up the wrong tree.

-edit: I have modified the data for the Universal titles to include the information about DL. I have also added a new column for audio.

Great summary. One possible enhancement would be to list audio formats such as DD,DTS,DD+,DD-HD,DTS-HD.

Done.

It don't think we know what the Universal titles use yet, but for the Warner titles all 3 have DD+ and Phantom also includes DD-HD.

Uni is also using DD+ across the board.

dvdempire lists "DTS Surround" for Chronos while Amazon says "Hi-Res DTS 96/24 Digital Surround Sound". So I would guess DTS is close enough.

It is DTS 96/24. Look at the large cover image here (http://www.goldhilentertainment.com/files/RB16009_front3d_large.jpg).

Thanks to all for the kind words. And no, for the moment I won't include a total number of titles per format in the initial post. There are still a few studios that haven't announced their plans, and Warner will surely release something in May/June. But anyone can do their own count. ;)

Bourne Supremacy: http://homevideo.universalstudios.com/details.php?childId=36323I just noticed that the Universal site says, "Available for Sale or Rent". I wonder if that will be true or if it is just some kind of placeholder. If noboby knows for sure, we should find out next week when the first titles ship. Would be an interesting strategy for Universal to rent these directly.

EDIT: Looks like that may just be a placeholder since the Anamorphic Widescreen UMD version of "The Bourne Supremacy" says the same thing with no way to actually do it, but the regular UMD version is only for sale.

Confirmed VC1 on all first HD DVD titles according to this post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=7490734&&#post7490734).

I just picked up a player along with Last Samurai, Phantom and Serenity at a local Best Buy. Here are the specs on the three titles:

Last Samurai:
VC-1: 1080P, 18 Mbps avg, 24 Mbps peak
Dolby Digital-Plus: English 5.1, 640 Kbps 16 bit/48 kHz

Phantom:
VC-1: 1080P, 15 Mbps avg, 21 Mbps peak
Dolby True HD: English 5.1, 1.6 Mbps average and 3 Mbps peak, 16 bit / 48 kHz
Dolby Digital-Plus: English 5.1, 640 Kbps 16 bit / 48 kHz

Serenity:
VC-1: 1080p, 16 Mbps avg, 24 Mbps peak
Dolby Digital Plus: English 5.1, 1.5 Mbps, 16 bit / 48 kHz

For the time being, as most titles are 1080p there is no 'resolution' column, but that might change if needed. OTOH audio and video bitrates might be worth listing, here or elsewhere.

Another vote of thanks, Grubert. As an 'undecided' consumer, not only about which format but even about whether to buy at all, for me it ultimately comes down to the titles. If the movies I want to watch are 80%+ on a particular format, that's the way I'll go. If it's split, I'll probably wait for a universal player or at least for the prices to plummet. So your list will be key.

The "H" and "B" make it hard to see easily what's coming out on what format. The way you had it before was better.

It was clean and easy to read. Now I have to look very closely to make sure I'm seeing things right.

Just a suggestion, but it was better with the whole "HD-DVD"/"Blu-Ray" identifcation instead of just a letter.

Agreed. I will be interested to compare the VC-1 version of Tomb Raider to my import WMV-HD version. While the quality of authoring should be much, much higher in the commercial release, I am hoping to get some sense for how far VC-1 has progressed. (Yes, there are several other variables at work beyond just the improved encoding process that will make this impossible to draw meaningful comparisons, but I'll do it anyway because, well, I can.)

Sony delays Blu-ray titles
Launch moved to June with introduction of players
By Susanne Ault 5/3/2006

MAY 3 | It appears that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has pushed its initial Blu-ray titles to June.

Sony’s first batch, including Hitch, 50 First Dates, and The Fifth Element, had been slated to bow on May 23. These titles, among others, are now slotted for release on June 20 at stores.

Amazon.com had the new date in place on its site Wednesday. Retailers Fred Meyer and Hastings also were prepared for a delay.

The news didn’t come as a shock to retail. The first Blu-ray players won’t hit shelves until June, so it makes sense to coordinate that launch with the software.

“They really have got to get on the hardware -- that has to be there -- otherwise the Blu-ray DVDs are worthless,” Hastings director of marketing Mason Goodfellow said. “That’s like selling PlayStation 3 games now. They aren’t going to work on anything.”

Sony officials were not immediately available for comment.

Additionally, going from amazon, it seems that the Sony titles slated for June 13 are being bumped to June 27. However, they still list Underworld: Evolution for June 6.

Not sure if Universal has releases they haven't announced that are after 6/13 and 7/11.

The way that several of their May releases have just been announced within the last two weeks leads me to believe that there will be more June releases announced as we get closer to the dates. I would like to think that Warner and Universal are just making sure not to overpromise and not meet expectations. Of course most of the major/vocal players in the new hidef formats have done their share of overpromising with features, dates, or software totals.

Don't forget the Blazing Saddles and Fugitive HD-DVDs from Warner next week (May 23), as discussed in this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=678114).

Sony also delayed some of its Blu-ray releases from June to July, as discussed here (http://dvd.themanroom.com/dvd-newsview.php?id=00103).

According to the Sony Pictures Home Entertainment press website, six of the June 27 Sony/MGM Blu-ray Disc releases have been pushed back to a July 25 release, no doubt to allow more time for Blu-ray players to find their way into homes. Those titles include "Kung Fu Hustle," "S.W.A.T.," Stealth," "Legends of the Fall," "Species" and "Terminator."

Wow, the small studios reply quickly to emails.

I got a reply from BCI. Its two August titles (Night of the Werewolf and Vengeance of the Zombies) are 'on hold.' They didn't say anything about the two September titles (Night of the Sorcerors and The Lorelei's Grasp), so I take that as a confirmation for those two titles. List price is $24.98.

And another from Concert Hot Spot, the studio that released View from Space

A View From Space With Heavenly Music had a street date of June 6, 2006 in HD DVD and will be released in Blu-ray on July 11, 2006.

A Guitarscape Planet by Muriel Anderson will be released on June 27, 2006 in HD DVD and July 11, in Blu-ray. Again, the resolution is 1080i and the codec used was MPEG2. The audio is Dolby Digital Plus. It's features the worlds best female guitarist along with nature footage shot worldwide in 1080i.

The company "will have many other HD DVD, and Blu-ray releases by year end featuring world famous popular music artists." They have delayed press coverage to date "simply because we decided to wait until there were a meaningful number of players available-hopefully by next month."

First, "in June" doesn't cut it. The initial announcement (http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6329566.html) was for May. I need a specific release date.

Second, that list is inaccurate. For example, it lists Scary Movie 4 when only the DVD has been announced: http://www.dvdtown.com/announcement/scarymovie4ondvd/3536/

Personally, the HDDVDPRG list is 'interesting scuttlebutt' more than anything else.

BTW, I have updated the specs of the Sony Blu-ray titles. I didn't have enough space for subtitles, but all of them have subtitles in English, French, Spanish and Chinese, and some in Korean, Thai and Portuguese. Also uncompressed PCM for all.

It's very different than a typical HD-DVD title, having been shot on 1080i with a video camera. It was about like the best quality DiscoveryHD Theater content, picture-wise. It was also very different having my mother-in-law over to narrate (she is a contractor for NASA on the Space Station).

The only real problem with it was that I was in the kitchen cooking for eight during most of the time it was playing. As a result, I was having to watch from across the room through our kitchen pass-through. :(

Now that we are getting some reviews and ratings, how about a column for PQ ratings (not movie ratings) ? You could pick a set of reviewers and either average the ratings or have a ranking of the reviewers and use the rating of the highest ranked reviewer who has reviewed a particular disc.

Ofcourse, someone else can maintain that list and just send you the ratings for updating.

Universal bumps trio of fall HD DVD releases (http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Disc_Announcements/Universal/Universal_Bumps_Trio_of_Fall_HD_DVD_Releases/126)

Universal Studios Home Entertainment is shifting the street dates of a trio of its upcoming HD DVD titles, delaying each's release by one week.

Originally due to debut on September [12], the Ron Howard action hit 'Backdraft' is now set to arrive in stores September 19.

The October 3 HD DVD/DVD combo releases of cult favorites 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High' and 'Army of Darkness' have also been postponed by one week, and will now hit shelves on October 10.

Spec, feature or pricing details remain unchanged, and Universal has given no reason for the shift in street dates.

HD DVD Heats Up With Extensive Lineup of Upcoming Titles (http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Disc_Announcements/HD_DVD_Heats_Up_With_Extensive_Lineup_of_Upcoming_Titles/139)

The number of upcoming titles headed for HD DVD continues to grow exponentially, as the format's official promotional website has just unveiled an extensive slate of titles due over the next several months.

Launched early last week as part of an extensive $150 million dollar marketing campaign designed to raise consumer awareness of HD DVD, www.TheLookandSoundofPerfect.com has added a large number of previously unannounced titles to its official coming soon to HD DVD movie release list.

Though street dates and features have yet to be announced for the new additions, new titles are listed from all current HD DVD supporting studios, including Warner and subsidiary New Line, Universal, Paramount, Weinstein Co. and Magnolia.

Among the numerous catalog releases due to hit HD DVD are such hits as 'The Mummy,' 'Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas,' 'American Pie,' 'Meet the Parents,' 'Hulk,' 'The Scorpion King,' 'Waterworld' and the multiple Oscar winners 'The Aviator,' 'Casino,' 'Spartacus,' 'Braveheart' and 'The Deer Hunter.'

More catalog classics and cult hits slate for upcoming release include 'Out of Sight,' 'Field of Dreams,' 'The Breakfast Club,' 'The Blues Brothers,' 'An American Werewolf in London,' 'Battlestar Galactica' and 'The Ultimate Star Trek Collection' box set from Paramount.

Also on the docket for HD DVD are a number of current and upcoming high-profile theatrical releases, which are expected to debut in the coming months day-and-date with DVD, including 'Miami Vice,' 'You, Me & Dupree,' 'The Break-Up,' 'The Black Dahlia,' 'Slither' and the latest in the 'Fast and the Furious' and 'American Pie' franchises.

All of these newly-announced titles have been added to the "Release Dates Pending" section of our complete HD DVD Release Schedule. Stay tuned for full details and street dates for all titles as soon as they are officially announced.

While we're talking high-def, The Weinstein Company has sent us their anticipated initial HD-DVD release slate, due to arrive in December from distributor Genius Products. BTW, strolling through Best Buy today I stopped and looked at the HD-DVDs, and I'll tell you, these things are just too expensive, they need to come down about 30% before I'd even consider an impulse buy, something I have no problem doing with SD-DVD.

I was wondering is you could also add a counter of total hd-dvd & blu-ray titles released (and/or scheduled for release) to the list.

Thanks

Just wanted to say that I think this is about the most useful thread on all the forums. I use it quite often to see what I might want to look for on Netflix or what I might have missed from past releases and with more and more disks out there it becomes even more important. Thanks for all the work you put into it, Grubert.

Nope, just a text file.

Procrastination is a terrible thing. ;)

PQ added up to Aug 15 releases.

tbass2k, I don't think there are video bitrate anaylizers as we have with SD DVD, either for BD or HD DVD. The only possible way to do it would be to look at the video file size with a laptop and divide by the running time.

TOTAL COUNT / Format Unique Count / Unique to Total Count ratio (%)

HD-DVD released = 97 / 59 / 60.8%
Blu-ray released = 78 / 47 / 60.3%

HV-DVD total = 148 / 100 / 67.6%
Blu-ray total = 127 / 80 / 63.0%

Here the count, from the list, as of last update for 24 Oct.

Released = as of this date
total = released + scheduled(i.e. announced)

Robert L. Sawyer III

Added chart graphing past (estimated), present and future trends in the format wars.

Left (1st) Y Axis is % of HD-DVD or Blu-Ray titles unique to their format (lines)
@ specific date in time (past & present w/ year divided into weeks) including trend lines...
Dashed Trend lines are moving average for the quarter
Dotted trend lines are moving average for the month

Right (2nd) Y Axis is % of HD-DVD or Blu-Ray titles unique to their format (bars)
past, present and announced future.

All information is based on Gruberts main chart, I have been counting and logging the changes on a weekly basis since 5 Sep 06, I used the last chart of August to apply a data points prior to August so a higher % error is implied prior to September dates. All info from then on is first hand (which is why the bars start on 5 Sep 06).

Distilled august news:
No Lord of the Rings in HD DVD or Blu-ray before 2008

Oh nooo....I have been waiting for these (among others) to be the "pushover" for me to get a HD player, any kind of format. These movies would be fantastic in HD, and a better promoter of either BD or HDDVD than most of the mediocre stuff released up to date by both formats. I for one hope to see rereleases of "Classics" like Kubriks Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Alien, Bladerunner and many more...

After running some numbers it looks like Warner is producing more than twice the number of HD-DVD's vs. Blu-Ray's. Anybody know why?

Paramount (the other company that produces on both formats) is about even (13 vs. 14) but Warner is 18 vs. 42. Is this intentional? Are they wanting to try to author better Blu-Ray discs before they repeat what they have already done for HD-DVD.

Apart from what Anthony said, note that Warner is not releasing any very long movies on Blu-ray. The longest ones were Space Cowboys and The Fugitive, which were exactly 130 minutes long.

They are probably waiting for BD50.

I've been asking that for awhile, what is the longest running BR titles without getting an answer. What codecs are these two movies?

I was looking at Blackhawk Down which is on a BD50 and is 144 minutes long. I wonder how much of the space on the disk is being used by this MPEG-2 movie

I've been asking that for awhile, what is the longest running BR titles without getting an answer. If you are willing to do the legwork yourself, you can use imdb.com to look at the times (under Runtime: ) for the Blu-ray movies listed at the top of this thread. Director's cuts and similar might not be listed though. T2 might be one of the longer ones.

Amir,

A few threads down D3Code did a little research around Ceatec and spoke with various engineers and what not.

During the course of this investigation, he was told is is very unlikely the current HD DVD players will be able to handle the triple layer HD Discs. Do you have any knowledge in regards to confirming/denying his info? Also, if this is true, what the heck are us early adopters supposed to do when those movies get released?
