e_rocm, Just for a test, put HP in "Movie" mode and play a game that does the flicker thing, if it does not flicker I am thinking that the prob. is that the "Auto Brightness" is kicking in. This I have noticed when in "Vivid" mode.
I tested the different picture modes and the flicker problem is almost completely eliminated in "Movie" mode. If I have the TV in "Vivid" or "Standard" mode then the problem is unbareable. Is there any way to completely shut down the "Auto Brightness" feature in all modes?
Amy 86532 07-19-06, 02:31 AM Hi, e_rocm,
The flicker (go dim and then bright) you noticed might be one of self-protection of the PDP panel. On certain modes (resolution), if the panel detects unusual brightness, it will adjust itself, which cause the "flicker".
Have you tested with the 42"? There is slim chance of 42" panel to have this problem.
Amy 86532 07-19-06, 02:44 AM I am seriously thinking about buying this tv, it was an open box item at my local BB. Before i buy this tv though i would like to know how well the video quality is when it is hooked up to a PC, i have a Gforce Nvidia 7800 GFx card, if that matters.
If its not good with the PC, does anyone have any suggestions for a tv that would work better with the PC than the PL5060N ???
thank you for all of your help
Actually, the TV can support more PC/VGA formats than which are specified on the User's Manual.
You can look through previouse posts in this thread and have a general idea of the TV's PC performance.
Amy 86532 07-19-06, 03:06 AM Right on, I have a cd of the service manual if any one needs it. Heck I have a friend that printed the whole thing out and put it in a binder. Also HP will let a person wait till the last month of the one year warranty to buy the extended warranty..
What do you think about the text in the service manual? One of my frieds told me it is not good "English" way. :)
Amy 86532 07-19-06, 04:20 AM I have a Motorola DVR box from Cox (I believe it is the DCT6412), and the book does not list remote control codes for my PL4260N. Has anyone been able to program this particular DVR remote for use with this TV?
Try Philips TV codes.
Amy 86532 07-19-06, 05:04 AM I am looking through the posts in this thread. It looks that many people think the PL4260N and PL5060N are made by LG? Can anyone tell me why do you think so?
The LG panel in service manual? or you are told by the sales person? or some others?
dirtydan 07-19-06, 11:56 AM What do you think about the text in the service manual? One of my frieds told me it is not good "English" way. :)
Text is fine til you get to the LG part, then there are some mess-ups.

I have this problem as well and have been through alot to no resolution. I am able to reproduce the problem using an xbox 360 at 720p. We hooked it up to a 42" and it DOES NOT have the problem. After 3 foul-ups in trying to get the circuit board replaced, HP shipped me a new 50" that had the same issue (along with a scratched cabinet).
- this happens mostly at 720p
- I have reproduced the problem using a Directv H20 (tested 2 different receivers) and an xbox 360 (actually 2 different xbox 360's)
- I've seen it on the '360 in Ghost Recon:AW, Moto GP demo, and now NCAA Football 2007
- The flicker actually happened at 1080i in NCAA (choose Penn State, daytime game, beginning when the camera flies around the stadium all the bright white causes the TV to flicker)
TidalWave - make sure you change your xbox 360 to 720p then try the demo.
HP service has been of no help since I refused delivery of the scratched TV that had the same problem, they cant get their paperwork right and say that my TV's serial number has been returned to them.
tidalwdave 07-19-06, 10:12 PM I think I have already tried the different picture modes but will try again just in case.
Oh, sorry man, I have a 42 inch. I just now read that you have the 50 inch. My bad. May be a problem with only the 50 inch then?
I mostly use my plasma for video games (PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, 360). No problems at all. This is with the 42 inch.
Sorry again......
Dave
blazingsoles 07-20-06, 03:19 PM I'm new to the forum and am very happy to have found so many knowledgable people. Thanks for all your input.
Im considering an HP PL5060N after researching and reading for well over 2 years now. I believe I'm ready to take the plunge. Reading the forums, I see that this model does not have a fan. Is this any concern if the monitor is to be mounted over a fireplace? I have read that the temps at the mounting region should be less than 90 degrees. Should I allow for 10 degrees less or so given there's no fan?
Thanks in advance.
Rob
Hi, New to this group, but I have a question if someone can answer it, it would be appreciated. Purchasaed a PL4260N 2 weeks ago. When i use component in from my cable box, I get slow rolling color lines thru the screen. If I use my DVD component out to component in on the TV, no problem. I purchased new component cables, swapped out the converter box (4200HD), still the same problem. The lines ONLY appear using component in to either input. Cable in, perfect. I do nto know if it is a problem with the TV or the signal going to it.
Thanks...

Does that cable box have a digital output(HDMI,DVI)? If so that should take care of the problem, I think your picking up some electical interference with your component cable or your cable box.

I had a similar problem. I posted it earlier on in this thread. It's probably not your set. After many frustrating days of troubleshooting, I decided to try a video ground loop isolator and it worked like a champ. Apparently somewhere on my electrical line I have a ground loop. I had green and pink scrolling lines, only when my cable box was hooked up. No other input had the problem either, just cable. I bought mine off of Ebay for 20 bucks. Hope that helps!
Thank You, I believe you are both correct. It does have a DVI out of the cable box, and HDMI in the TV, unfortunately, there is no sound when using the DVI out to HDMI in with this cable box. The cable provider said that I would need the DVR box to get audio, and I do not need it for an additional $10.00 a month. It's certainly not the money, it's just the idea they would have it that way. Unless you know of a way to get audio out, I need to use the component cables.
I did connect the TV to a different power source, independent of the other components, and it was a little better, so I think the video ground loop isolator is the answer.
Thank you again for your response, it was a big help.

I could not take the flickering anymore from the 50" HP so I decided to exchange it. I decided to go with the 50" Samsung and it is great. It has no flicker at all.
Just wanted to report my resolution incase someone has the same problem in the future. I am pretty sure that this is a problem with all of the 50" PL5060N TV's (I have tested it on two and have talked with others with the same problem). It appears to be a problem with the autobrightness feature and could probably be fixed with a software update (No update has been released at the time of this posting). See my earlier posts If you have questions as to what exactly the flicker problem is.
Thanks everyone for your help.
swimbikerun75 07-24-06, 11:19 AM Thanks to all the great help on here I went and bought the 42" HP at Best Buy yesterday. [EDIT] plus the $299 4-year service package. They had none in stock in any store in town so it's getting delivered. I got the guy to drop the delivery charge too because I bought the service package (which I was going to do anyway.) Going to get my Cox HD-DVR this week too, hopefully before the TV arrives. Now I just need to go back an re-read all of the posts here to make sure I break it in right, have the right cables, and set the contrast right :)
hockey2112 07-29-06, 12:03 AM I have had the 42" set for about 2 months now, and everything has been great so far, until a little hiccup today. I returned home to find that the TV was not playing any sound at all, via my cable box (RGB/RCA) and my DVD player (HDMI only). I rebooted the cable box, and the sound worked for it.
I turned my DVD player on and off a few separate times, and the audio is still not coming into the TV through the HDMI cable. I tried plugging the DVD player in with RCA audio, and the audio plays fine that way (on a video channel, separate from the HDMI). However, I need the audio to come through on the HDMIO cable, as it rightfully should.
Any ideas on how I can fix this issue? It is driving me nuts!!!! I have rebooted the TV and the DVD player multiple times, and nothing seems to work. Please help if you can!
Thanks...
ernie_k 07-31-06, 02:53 AM Anyone else have a PC hooked up to their HP plasma? I have the PL4260N, and I hooked up a media center PC to it. It looks OK at a resolution of 1024x768, but when I look at photos they are stretched out (scaled to 16:9). Obviously, I could just change the aspect ratio on the TV to 4:3, but it seems a shame to waste all that real estate. So I'm wondering if anyone has been able to get 1260x720 working (e.g., using Powerstrip), or if there are other solutions that I'm just missing.
thanks
swimbikerun75 07-31-06, 09:17 PM I've had my PL4260N for a week now, and this weekend got around to mounting it on the wall. I have no complaints about this TV whatsoever. Some people were bashing the speaker quality but I got rid of my stereo and I'm just using the detachable speakers and I have the audio out line running directly to my powered sub. Sure sounds fine to me. Only complaint is that I wish more programs were in HD/16:9. I hate the zoom or stretch modes.
I'm using the HDMI from my Explorer HD DVR through Cox and the component lines from the DVD player.
After waiting for the rigt time to buy, I pulled the trigger on the 42 inch today. GOt the unit shipped for $1499.99 :) :) :) ...HP's EPP actually worked like a charm for me .
Now I get to wait for HP's third party courier North American to contact me withing 2-3 days to arrange for an in-home setup. They are going to deliver it, unpack it, put it on my TV stand, and take all the packaging with them...sweet!
At work we have a room full of the HP TV's and this 42 really caught my eye for its size. Beware that HP will more than likely drop the prices of their plasmas during the release of the media smart LCD's that should be hitting BB this week.
Once I get mine setup I will take pics and let everyone know how life is. Thanks to this thread and your opinions; the overwelming value of this TV by this threads users has really helped me in pulling the trigger.
j_nolesfan 08-01-06, 11:23 AM I really need to get around to playing with my settings some more. But appears as though most of us pretty much agree. I really want to calibrate the TV 3 times with each of the color temperature settings to see what's the difference.
Waxmaster, regarding your settings:
Hue +3 seems odd, everyone else seems to have left it at 0, myself included. What color temperature are you using? That might have an affect.
I watched 3 World Cup games this weekend in HD and it was amazing After 45 minutes of static images on the screen I didn't notice any rentention.
I rememembered this post the other day when I was watching my TV. As my panel has increased in hours, there has been a slight push to red. I can see where Waxmaster would want to put the Hue at something above zero, especially if he has anything over 100 hours on it. It may just be my experience. Has anyone else noticed a little push to red after the panel has completely broken in?
Thanks,
Jeff

Nice looking. As to speakers, I put mine on a carpeted floor and they sound good unless I boost the bass all the way up, then they get overdriven and break-up, I rarely use them since my Pioneer A/V reciever with 7 speakers and a Velodyne sub sound much better.

Nice in wall job. But, it looks kind of high and were is the seating view?

It might be a good idea to follow the progress of the shipment and when you see it has arrived at the nearest No. Amer. site to you, call them.

How do you get that - (minus) figure on sharpness? Mine goes from 0 and up, and all are + (plus)
j_nolesfan 08-02-06, 01:27 PM I should have mentioned when I posted my settings that I'm using HDMI. Dan, I'm surprised you're not using HDMI since it's available using the VIP622. Why's that?

I used HDMI for a couple months, then decided that the picture had more contrast with component, therefore I used THX again and never went back. I have ordered an up-converter/scaler and it is strictly component, when I install it I will use it's settings for picture, and then I can re-set HDMI with THX and use it when appropriate.

It's a secret. :) Actually it's just a dash, I must have missed it when posting. Fixed above
blazingsoles 08-02-06, 07:04 PM Hi ...
Still hoping to get a response in regards to mounting the HP PL50 over a fireplace given it has no fan? Is this a concern?
I'm surprised how few have bought the 50" given the price is reasonable. Any reasons?

I'm not sure way most are buying the 42", might be that we are all cheap. In my case I am in a small room and didn't think a 50" would display SD very good. As to the fireplace, I have read where people have done it, never heard of ant negative results. If you do that you will prob. save some firewood as the panel will supply a few BTUs.
swimbikerun75 08-02-06, 09:26 PM Nice in wall job. But, it looks kind of high and were is the seating view?
It is pretty high based on the recommendations I had read, however my criteria was that it had to be out of the reach of my 18-month old's hand for at least a couple more months. I think the centerline of the Tv is about 52 inches off the floor.
As for seating I have a loveseat/chaise combo that essentially acts as a sectional so I have seating for two with our backs against the wrought iron railing.
I'm surprised how few have bought the 50" given the price is reasonable. Any reasons?I was on the border as far as 42" vs. 50", I'm about 9 feet away. Considering there's way more SDTV then HDTV on as of right now, I find the 42" looks better as SD. So I decided to save my money, and use it for accessories, line conditioner, remote, etc. When I do replace it, it will probably move to the bed room and anything bigger then 42" would be way to big in there. Upgrading from a 27" 4:3 to a 42" 16:9 was enough of a wow factor already.
grafixguy63 08-04-06, 05:12 PM I bought the 42 inch and I'm happy with it so far.
Except, I had a problem trying to use HDMI from a Motorola 6412 Phase III DVR with the Comcast.
I got "No audio signal detected" and also no picture. Occasionally I got a unauthorized HDMI device. I've switched to component from the box, and it works fine. I'm using the HDMI from my Philips upconverting DVD player. Works great. I've read some threads on here about Motorola's box having these type of problems. Anyone know if it has been fixed yet?

Not sure if someone has answered this, but I don't have time to read every post. Here is what I have got my 42" dialed in at. To hold true to the 16:9 ratio, make sure the computer resolution you use = 1.77
Processor - AthlonXP
Video - NVidia GeForce FX 5200 PCI
Resolution - 1360x768 (The highest available for this display and maintains 16x9)
If you can, tweak the frequencies in your advanced settings to the manuals specs on page 48 and you will see an increase in the clarity of all text. Also, set you text smoothing to cleartype in display settings\appearance\effects.
Anyone had luck finding a Windows color profile???
I am looking into a new video card for increased performance, but otherwise this display rocks as a monitor for my living room media center and home theater. Don't forget the wireless keyboard and mouse setup.
mlambert68 08-05-06, 12:00 PM Got the TV mounted on the wall this weekend.
Nice, I am working on mounting mine above my fireplace. Did you use an HP mount or other?
mlambert68 08-05-06, 04:42 PM ps I am using the Samsung HT-Q45 Home 5.1 Home Theater System that nicely complements the Plasma's functionality. It being an all-in-one model, allows for a nice compact setup.
mlambert68 08-05-06, 04:43 PM Fill post since I am a newbie so I can post a picture for you guys.
mlambert68 08-05-06, 04:47 PM FYI - I have used my HP 42" quite alot for various purposes for about 4 months now and it has been flawless.
mlambert68 08-05-06, 04:50 PM Here is my Home Theater/Media Center setup in the living room, That extra sofa couch I got with my suit worked well, but I still want it up and to the left above the fireplace.

capnxtreme 08-06-06, 11:50 PM Hi all,
Just received my 42" this weekend. Haven't had any problems so far. This is my first plasma, so I don't have a lot to compare it to, but I did lots of research before I made my purchase.
I had been dead set on the Panny 60U, even though I didn't like the silver case or speakers, just because I had thought it had the best PQ/$. I could never find the deal I was looking for, however, and after calling up a couple of the scam joints in Brooklyn, I decided I was just going to have to spend the extra dough to buy from a reputable vendor. And I really didn't like the idea of spending $2300 for something that didn't have aesthetics I really liked, even though PQ/$ is essentially my main criterion. The industrial Panny 60's are now more expensive than the consumer model, and I wasn't sure if I wanted the older 50 series, which were also getting harder to find. So I just looked around at Costco and Fry's, and found the Toshiba 42HP66 for $2k, which looked like it had pretty good PQ, and had better aesthetics than the Panny (and I thought the Toshibas used the Panny glass).
Then I hopped on the ol' Internet and found this place, and learned that the older Toshibas and HP's use the Panny 50 glass, and the new ones use the new LG glass. There don't seem to be hardly any reviews by magazines or anyone of the new LG glass?!?!? but everyone on here seemed pretty stoked with them. When I learned the HP had the same glass, and that BB had it for $1700 on sale, I had to check it out. I love the plain matte black case, and the fact that the speakers are removable!!! I had read some complaints that the industrial design is too plain, but it is EXACTLY what I was going for, and I really didn't want some cheapass speakers attached to my $2k TV. Just from comparing at BB (obviously not a sufficient comparison), the HP (and the LG and Toshiba) look great, even next to the Panny 60U. I can't comment on the black level comparison, but the colors, sharpness, etc. look awesome IMO, and I like the industrial design of the HP better than the Tosh or LG with the same glass, and WAAAAY better than the Panny I was going to spend another 5 bills on.
I have been playing with the settings all weekend. My favorite so far is:
Brightness: 50
Contrast: 34
Saturation: 42
Hue: 0
Sharpness: 0
Temp: Warm
I haven't run any calibration software or anything, just going by eye trying to get the most accurate reproduction possible.
I am connecting DirecTV HD DVR thru the HDMI, and PS2 thru the component inputs. I spent a while switching between 720p and 1080i output on the DirecTV, and decided that the diagonal lines look smoother with 1080i, though the 720p looks fine.
PS2 looks great, esp. Gran Turismo 4 @ 1080i.
I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I have tried a variety of DVD's incl. Pitch Black and some other ones w/ lots of darkness. Again, I can't comment on black level vs. the Panny, but everything looked sweet to me. It is possible that there is some detail lost in the darkness (I have nothing to compare to), but I have definitely not seen any false contouring or any other weirdness of any kind.
IMHO, those of you experiencing image retention, false contouring, clayface, or whatever else, have your contrast or sharpness cranked too high. I haven't seen anything of the sort.
Anyway, just wanted to share my $0.02 and experience since everyone else's experiences on here helped me out with my decision. I can't wait to read some magazine reviews of the new LG glass, but it gets my wholehearted recommendation.
The HP BLOWS AWAY anything in the same immediate price range.
Matt

Surround sound at it's finest. :) You might want to try putting some of those speakers on the side walls.
dirtydan 08-07-06, 03:17 PM capnxtreme, I like my 42" too, your settings look good, except for the "Warm" setting, I have always used "Cool". Just now I changed to warm for awhile and it sure shows a green tint to the picture, especially when viewing a blue sky.

Thanks fly for pointing that out. You are the best. Actually, I have the wireless rear channel on it's way.
ender1776 08-07-06, 11:19 PM I just purchased the 50 inch, and I must say I don't have one regret. If I had lots of money to blow with no budget there are a few features and fixes I would have spend the extra money on, but there is nothing better out in a name brand in terms of bang for buck. The HDMI audio issue was thankfully a non issue since the Scientific Atlanta HD cable box automatically converts a 5.1 signal to 2 channel if 5.1 is not supported on HDMI (this isn't only a HP problem). However, if you run an optical cable to the reciever like I do, you have to force 5.1, and live without audio on the tv (which I have been doing for years, and the speakers are ugly anyway). The other nice thing was that the remote auto programs (it found the right settings for powering off the TV in about 30 seconds), and includes a 'strech' and zoom 1,2 modes with 1 touch so no more fooling with the HP remote except for source select.
The pq is great, and is bright even with the brightness down under 50. Reflection is only a minor issue during the day, and only if you sit where you can see lots of light from a window. The HD channels look great (when they actually show HD content) but even the SD channels look very good. Even stretched (I know its better for the TV to strech the image to fill, but disregarding that I hate having black bars on the SIDES, and I didn't buy a 50 inch to look at a 41 inch square picture). I have yet to hook a computer to it, I'll let it break in a few more days before I do that, but I'm looking forward to it to see how it looks, and I'll post a pic setup with an image on a following post. Now I just need more than 6 HD channels (that rarely actually show HD content) and a resolution to the Blueray vs. HDdvd war.
ender1776 08-08-06, 12:47 AM ok, these will have to do, we have a nice 35mm, but our current digital is a DV cam that takes 1.3mp shots on a sd card, with poor quality, and awful action pics. So, just as a warning the images look ALOT better in person, but this will give you an idea.

MiB on On Demand in 720P, not sure how the broadcast is formated(720p or 1080i), but it looked AMAZING in person, much better than any store display would show. Finnaly HD in native res (90% of the HD channel content is 4:3 SD)

Must stay up late to see the network HD content. Here is Dave Letterman in HD (10x better in actuallity)

These pictures don't even do the SD images justice, if I find our other digital around I'll snap some better ones, and replace the links.
Thanks fly for pointing that out. You are the best. Actually, I have the wireless rear channel on it's way.Sometimes you just have to bust-on some people. :)

Wohooooo! North American delivered my TV today. I am an HP employee and my discount was ~$500 off the BB price so I pulled the trigger. Note, to those who are considering ordering through HP or BB: HP delivers this to your door, takes the TV out of the box, and sets it up on whatever stand/location you want. They even take the packaging material and trash it.
The other reason I ordered through HP (as if the discount wasnt enough) but I can order the extended service plan up until the one year of the date I purchased the unit, whereas I believe you only have something like 30 days to do so at Best Buy.
Anyhow, I will be taking a few pictures here soon and commenting on the HD OTA because that is how I will be using the unit for the next couple of months. I did watch "Over the Hedge" and "Chicken Little" (HP Movies of course) and they looked awesome!
Ill keep yall posted :)
blazingsoles 08-09-06, 02:21 AM hi guys..
Okay - I got the 42" after presuming I was going to get the 50". The picture quality was considerably better - particularly with SD. I'm satisfied with my choice.
I have a question - my current dvd player plays mp3, jpeg, cd, dvd, etc. When playing mp3 / cd - I have a static image on the screen. To prevent retention or burn-in, is it possible to "turn-off" the screen while the cd is playing. I found the "white wash" function, but can't find anything on turning the screen off.
Thanks,
Rob
bmfgsxr 08-09-06, 08:58 AM im new to the forum, and to plasmas.. we picked up our 4260n 2 weeks ago and we absolutely love it. we debated on getting the 50" but for the extra money it didnt seem worth it to us. our seating distance is probably about 10-12 feet away and its a great size to watch. there are no regrets to going with the 42 over the 50. bb had it on sale for 1700, and i had a 12% coupon they used with that as well so we made out really well in that respect.
we also bought a surround sound system made by LG with 5 disk dvd/cd/am/fm/satelite radio. its a giant leap for us in regards to a home theater system. we have cablevision as our cable service provider with the hd cable box with dvr as well. currently i have hdmi going from the surround sound/dvd system straight into the tv with component cable coming from the cable box to the tv. and a fiber optic line from the cable box to the surround sound system so we can have surround sound from the cable box as well. at first we had component cables for sound from the cable box to the surround sound and there was a noticeable delay in the picture vs. sound relationship, but the optical cable fixed that up quick.
we are extremely happy with this set up. for the most part anything we have been watching on the tv has been in zoom mode so the screen is filled. however, i did watch a couple of movies in vivid mode as i completely forgot about the brightness, and contrast levels during break in.. i would hope that watching 5-6 hours on vivid wouldnt hurt the life of the tv, and we have since lowered the levels considerably.
i just wanted to add my $.02 as to how happy we are with the tv. and does anyone think watching those few hours on vivid during the first week are going to hurt the tv at all?

just turn off the tv.
swimbikerun75 08-09-06, 10:08 AM no more fooling with the HP remote except for source select.
If you've got the same S.A. HD DVR box I've got, you don't need the HP remote for source select either. Just use the "Input" button near the bottom left and you toggle through the inputs. Not as fast as the HP remote where you can visually select, but I now have no reason for the HP remote unless I'm changing TV specific settings, maybe once every couple weeks.

I bought the Harmony 550, couldn't be happier. And I can access all the functions of all my components with one remote. One remote for the cable box, VCR, DVD, TV, Xbox & Amp.
Regarding listening to MP3s, if you have it hooked up to a reciever for sound then turn off the TV, but if the sound is coming through the TV, you'll need it on.
Scotsman1 08-09-06, 11:50 PM Any Canadians here ? Does anyone know where I can get the best deal on the 50" PL5060N, looks like Best Buy has it for [EDIT] ?
Thx
I ran into an odd issue with this TV today. It doesn't appear to like some video sources.
Specifically, in this case, I was trying to plug in one of those "old-video-games-in-a-joystick". (It has old arcade game ROMs built into a joystick unit, and you can select from 5 different games. It outputs to a composite connection and mono audio. This is all built right into the joystick. Just add batteries and plug in the composite cable and audio.)
My previous set up, before getting the HP 42", was to plug this joystick into the AUX ports of my AV receiver. This then was plugged into the TV's S-video input (the old TV). I currently have the same AV receiver plugged into the HP 42" plasma's S-VIDEO1 S-video input. The display menus of the receiver show up fine on the screen when I choose that input. But plugging in the game into the AUX connectors on the front of the receiver gets me no image at all. I even tried plugging in the game directly into the TV's composite/mono jacks in the back and still got no image.
I plugged the game into an older TV and it worked fine there, so that doesn't appear to be at fault.
Why wouldn't the video from the joystick show up? The TV comes with the composite connections so I would assume that it can tune in and display those types of signals (I am thinking about the output resolution of the game here). And the TV doesn't give an error message, just a blank screen (so it isn't telling me "Out of range" or "Can't display image" or anything).
Is the TV finicky about the composite voltage levels? I am driving the game with 4 NiMh batteries (so only 4.8V (4*1.2V) instead of 6V if I used regular alkaline batteries). But I have always used these battery types, and it did work on the other TV. I don't know if I have any regular alkalines around, but I may have to give that a try.
Does anyone else have any ideas? No, I haven't talked with HP customer support yet, but I think I am going there next.
Thanks,
Cronk
Am I able to adjust the HD OTA ATSC tuner with respect to the orientation I want to point the signal? We have several HD OTA channels in our area but only some are coming in consistently.
If so, how do I reach this menu?
If not, what ATSC tuner have you purchased 3rd party that has been working?
FYI - All the HD OTA channels are within 12 miles of my TV.
Thanks!
Hovglove 08-11-06, 07:00 PM I can get one of these for reasonable $$$ since I am an HP employee. Is it a good TV for regular program watching and movies? I went to my local best Buy but got plasma overload since they are all lined up next to one another.
I know there's better sets, etc. I just saw the new Vizio 42inch LCD at Costco's and that also looked good to me but what do I know?
The HP would cost me a little more than the Vizio but reading the Vizios review scare me concerning the quality, etc..

Ripper99 08-12-06, 02:53 AM Can anybody confirm that the PL5060N can be controlled with RS-232?
I know it has a port but earlier in this thread someone mentioned they asked about the port on the 42" and HP mentioned it was for servicing...a few posts later someone mentioned the ascii codes are in the manual so if thats true it probably can be controlled..I just want to confirm the codes shown in the service manual work, thanks.

I'm not an employee, back in April they offered the 18 month deal if a person signed-up for the HP credit Card, since then they dropped it to a 12 month deal for no interest.
can anyone shed some light on this , please?
Are you talking about aiming the antenna you have attached to receive OTA?

Bill, hopefully you figured this out by now but I pulled one of the screws out of the back of my tv. It a posi-drive head and the thread appears to be 1/8" x 5/8" fine thread. I hope that helps.

BillBragg 08-14-06, 01:07 PM They are M4-16's. I bought a wall mount with the TV and in the wall mount package there was just about every metric screw known to man ... to help you get your asian made TV on the wall. I tried a few and noticed the M4 was the ticket. I went to Ace and picked up 8 of them in a reasonable length. The ones in the wall mount kit were too long.
My PL-5060N is now happily applied to my family room wall with a 6 degree downward tilt. Works perfectly and has an excellent picture. My cable box handles the PIP and stretch so I'm very happy with the unit. The screws were missing, as well as the manual and the floor stand, because it was a recent return to BB. Otherwise, the unit was perfect and still set on defaults. Beause of it's status as a return, I paid under $2k for it.
The quality of the picture and the size make it a steal even at list I believe.
Yes I can confirm that I have RS232 control with my 42" and 50" Plasma.
My old post indicated that that port was for service only as per my discussion with HP.
Can anybody confirm that the PL5060N can be controlled with RS-232?

and I deserved it. Rear channel card and receiver came in over the weekend. Moved the fronts more to the side and the rears where they go (for flyjar, lol). All the ney-sayers of wireless rear channel can climb in my attic when its 140 degrees up there and see if they can hear any differences. Works great!
Now back to the topic of displays...
Grabbed a new video card for the media center and played Battlefield 1942 for the first time on my 42". Only drawback I can find is that I have to sit at least 10' from the screen to begin to even be able to comprehend the mayhem! It is awesome and going to a 512mb video card helped mucho!
Dilemma88 08-15-06, 05:33 PM Now that we have a few members who have purchased the new HP PL4260N and PL5060N plasmas, I thought we should go ahead and start a new thread for owners to report their experiences, impressions, settings, pros, cons, problem resolutions, etc....
I know there are other threads on this site related to speculation and general conversation about these two PDP's. Let's try to keep this thread dedicated to personal experience to help both owners and potential buyers alike.
I think some members are getting their sets this week. I look forward to seeing your reviews and comments! I will hopefully be able to do the same very soon :D
Hi all - I am glad to find this posting. I currently have a Panasonic ED TH-42PD25U/P and I had just purchased a new home that comes with the HP PL4260N. I want to sell one and keep only one....you guessed it....which one should I keep? At first it seems like a no-brainer ED v HD but after reading through the thread, that is not the case. I had been pretty happy with my Panasonic ED.
Your advice and help would be greatly appreciated!

blazingsoles 08-16-06, 02:32 AM Okay - call me an idiot but I'm having problems setting my system up. I have the HP PL4260N with Sony DAV FX500 HTIB. I just picked up an HDMI cable and the video and sound are flawless when playing DVDs. But, I can't seem to get the cable to work.
There's only one coaxial hook up on the DVD player, therefore coaxial cable line is going to the VCR with the HDMI going from the dvd to the plasma. In order to get sound through the dvd player, obviously I need to route it through here first. If I run the coaxial directly to the tv from the cable, it works fine. Hmm.. something simply I presume yet???
Sorry for such a stupid question, but monday I'm having Direct t.v. come and want to mount the speakers and plasma following.
Thanks for any input in advance.

You say "Cable" is this the type service you have (Cable TV)? If so, do you have a Cable reciever?

There are some known probs. with HDMI and some Cable boxes, if it works for you , fine. I have used both HDMI and Component from my Dish box, to me component is better. As to sound, if cable box has digital output, hook that to the Bose, best to go straight from Cable box to HP for video. For DVD playing use HDMI or Component to HP. I don't think that hooking video from Cable box to Bose has any advantage, usually best to go straight from source to HP.

It's best to go from an A/V reciever to the sub. Otherwise use the adjustments on the sub.

I have mine set up the way you describe and I just had to adjust the volume and the frequency cutoff on my sub. I believe the HP also has an EQ for you to adjust as well, though I haven't spent much time playing around with it. At any rate, other than a small "pop" from the sub when I turn the HP on or off, it sounds good to me.
wkparker 08-16-06, 08:02 PM Thanks for the input. The TV this replaced, a 36" Mitsubishi CRT, varied the line output based on the TV volume, and I ran it through an AV receiver. I'm just a little surprised that the HP doesn't do that.

swimbikerun75 08-16-06, 08:37 PM Actually, now that you mention it, I guess I did notice that even when I mute the TV volume I still hear some bass from the Sub. That is odd.

I do have "cable service", but do not have a cable box.
dirtydan 08-17-06, 06:06 PM I do have "cable service", but do not have a cable box.
If I understand you, you sure don't want your cable coax going to the DVD player, it should go to the HP, now, if you want to route it through the VCR you can do that too, it will just be a matter of selecting the right HP inputs to see DVD (hdmi) and probably (Antenna) for the Cable channels.

That's what I'm trying to avoid. It's a bit inconvenient to jump up and manually adjust the sub every time I change the volume . :)
Hello,
Does anyone know where I can find the exact dimensions of the glass for the 50" . I have the 50" but I will not have access to it until tonight.
Thanks
SRHookEm 08-18-06, 04:08 PM Can someone tell me which model from LG matches the PL5060N exactly? I don't see it. I'm assuming HP only uses the guts and replaces everything else--even the speakers--with their own.
Thoughts?
dirtydan 08-18-06, 08:23 PM Your right, the HP is different, but according to the HP service manual, they do you a lot of LG parts beside just the panel itself.
Lucifer Sam 08-18-06, 10:04 PM I picked up the P5060N 3 days ago and I've got a unique situation. I was in need of a new TV since my old CRT has almost completely died, but I purchase Direct TV through a company called AT&T home entertainment which does not yet (but should within 6 months) offer an HDTV signal.
I've got this unit home and unpacked and so far what seems to be bothering me the most is the black levels, they seem exceptionally poor to me. Also ,I've adjusted the settings a million different ways and still I don't see much detail in dark scenes. Is this unit known to have terrible shadow detail - or is it my signal that is making this look poor?
I'm watching V for Vendetta right now on an upconvert DVD player set to 1080i and in the dark scenes I see almost nothing.
Is this a common issue with this set? Poor black levels? I am considering returning this unit and going with the uglier Panasonic based on black levels and PQ.
Anyone have any suggestions?
dirtydan 08-19-06, 10:59 AM I have not seen this complaint mentioned in this thread. I would suggest trying other setting (480p, 720p), also other Dvds. What conection ru using?
blazingsoles 08-19-06, 12:53 PM For those of you who have your plasma mounted above a fireplace, did you install it yourself of have it installed. I'd like to do this myself (with a friend, of course) as the local electronics installer wants $800 for the plasma only. This is not including running any wiring for the surround sound or installing the speakers.
The main concern I have is running the wiring from the plasma to an outlet behind the bookcase next to the fireplace which is out of view. Is there some time of conduit or insulation I need to cover the wiring to protect it from heat? I have little experience with home wiring just to clear that up.
If the overwhelming thought is to have it done professionaly, I'll do that - but damn that seems like a lot of money when the tv only cost 2x that.
dirtydan 08-19-06, 01:12 PM I don't think a power cord straight to the outlet would be a problem, unless you fireplace makes that area extremely hot.

I'll try another setting and another DVD and let you know how I make out.
I've got the DVD running through the HDMI.... that's the other thing, I'm wondering if there's a relatively inexpensive splitter out there that I can plug more than one HDMI source into?

Try component, I found that the HDMI was washed out compared to component. Try Monoprice for inexpensive manual switcher.

deadlifter 08-21-06, 09:57 AM I have a jitter problem and would like some advice.
I have Charter cable TV service with all the available non-pay HDTV channels turned on and available through a Moxi DVR. Because I simply could not get a good picture output from the Moxi using it's DVI output to the PL4260N's HDMI input (with PC audio jack), the picture always seemed too washed out looking and lacking vibrance no matter what settings I tried, I switched it to component connection using a high quality 6' cable set and was quite pleased with the image quality. My standard 420P DVD player is connected to the second component input.
Here's the problem.
I keep getting significant display jitter on either the Moxi SD TV channels or the DVD input which will only go away for a variable amount of time if I either complete unplug both sets of component cables and reinstall them, or if I simply switch the set to an HDTV channel and back to SD input. It seems like the SD/HDTV input switch provides a very short reprieve from this problem, while unplugging the component cables provides at least hours of relief from this problem. The only way I got through a 93 minute DVD last night was to unplug the component cables and reinstall them.
I'm not talking about a pixel vs. pixel sized jitter; it's several inches of horizontal jitter so it's really unwatchable when it occurs.
Anybody else having problems using both component inputs? It doesn't matter if the DVD player is powered off while I'm watching SD TV through the Moxi DVR, the problem still occurs.
I have never seen the problem with a 720P HDTV channel.
I never saw this problem when I was using the Moxi's DVI to HDMI connection, though at that time the DVD player was run using composite cables (nowhere near the IQ of component cables by the way).
I have 2 days left on my 30 day Best Buy return policy clock running. I'd rather not bundle it all up and try to get another unit, as they'll probably offer me the display model, and am more than happy to try buying a new upconverting DVD player and using it on the HDMI input if that's a solution. I could even buy a switch box and put the Moxi DVR on the HDMI input and get rid of component video completely.
Ideas?
thanks!
Jason1976 08-21-06, 10:17 AM I rememembered this post the other day when I was watching my TV. As my panel has increased in hours, there has been a slight push to red. I can see where Waxmaster would want to put the Hue at something above zero, especially if he has anything over 100 hours on it. It may just be my experience. Has anyone else noticed a little push to red after the panel has completely broken in?
Thanks,
Jeff
Jeff, this should be normal for almost all plasmas. With the majority of panels on the market, the blue phosphors start out hot. As they settle down a little it will make the picture appear warmer because there is less blue left in the color balance.
Scotsman1 08-22-06, 07:05 AM Hi, question ffrom a noobie ! I just got my 5060 based on comments here and my perception in Best Buy. I also got a Prima upconverting DVD player to watch DVD's until HDDVD or Blueray become affordable. When I dropped in my first DVD I was given a widescreen picture of the movie but it only filled the sceen horizontally, I was left with wide black bars across the top and bottom of the screen - surely it should have filled the screen with a HD picture ???
Am I missing something here, please help as I'm a little disappointed in my DVD player purchase !

Thanks
Brian
you need to change the aspect ratio to 16:9 on both your DVD player and TV, unless you're talking about a wider aspect ratio... which is possible on some DVD's.

Yeah, I ran into the same thing, turns out that most of the movies that I watch the most are 2.35:1. Kind of annoying especailly when you first get the TV and you really shouldn't be watching it with black bars. Examples: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings
The first movie we ended up watching was Emporer's New Groove because it filled the screen. :)
Hello,
this is my first post, but as I used the info from this thread as a key source of info in my decision to go with the HP, I figured this is the place to come with this question.
Back in July we purchased the 5060n at BB, got delivered about a week later. (It was damn hot at the time).... After I hooked the tv up, I fired it up and there was a 1" yellow line about 3" from the edge of the Panel.... I was not happy and I called BB, they figured the tv was damaged and said they would replace it, but it took a few weeks to arrange for a pick up and delivery, so I was told to use the tv as I pleased. after the first night, I turned the TV on, and the line was gone, I talked to the guy at BB again and he had no idea what the problem was, but as I had just recieved the tv, I told them I still intended to replace it and he agreed.....
The tv seemed to be working great, a few days later it was really hot out, and the line returned.... this made me suspicios, so I placed a fan behind the tv, and a few minutes later the line was gone..... I unplugged the fan, and after an hour or so, the line returned.... I went through this cycle a few times, until I was sure that the problem was heat related.....
I now have a new 5060, but I am still concerned that a similar thing will happen.... does anyone know if heat can cause such problems.... or was it most likely a faulty panel?
SRHookEm 08-22-06, 02:22 PM I think the 5060N is fan cooled internally, right? Maybe your internal fan was not working.

that may have been the problem, but I don't believe there is a fan (the issue was discussed at length in previous posts, and to the best of my knowledge, the concensous was there is no internal fan....),

kmd_mlc 08-22-06, 06:55 PM Let me start by saying that I am a plasma and AVS Forum newbie. I have searched this entire thread trying to find out if there is anything special about the mount for an HP PL5060N. I have also looked at the manual and the HP site without much luck. There seems to be a zillion different mounting kits and I want to be sure that the one I order will work with the TV.
Any suggestions?? I need to be able to tilt the TV but it does not need an articulating/swivel arm (although that sounds pretty cool!!).
Thanks for the help.
Love the picture but I need to get it mount soon before my toddler wrecks it.... :)

I have the Omni mount on my 42 inch that has tilt and it works flawless it supports a 32-63 inch set ( it's setup in my bedroom)
falsedawn 08-22-06, 08:19 PM I'm really enjoying my 50" HP plasma, especially when it comes to HD NFL games. I'm on Comcast cable. I've noticed bad pixellation with 1080i games (NBC-HD) when the camera is zoomed in on motion. No hint of pixellation with 720p games (ESPNHD). I remember reading that certain networks (Fox, ESPN) chose 720p because of superior sports performance. It makes sense that the greater the amount of picture information, the worse the pixellation when the picture changes rapidly and the source is bandwidth-limited. Is my perception correct?
Hello-
I have been a reader for a while now but this is my first time post. I just purchased and set up the pl4260n. To start off, I am very unhappy. I don't know yet if it is because comcast sucks or the TV sucks or both. I connected a comcast dct3412 dvr / hd box using HDMI - no audio on any channel. I actually got a message on the tv that said "HDMI audio unavailable" The DVD player that I connected with components works fine. I did a little research on this site and found there might be problems with HDMI to the TV. That sucks, I feel like the douchebag at BB should have told me that. So now I conect the cable box to the tv with monster componenet cables. Audio works great now, but the picture is not that great. It seems like when the frame moves it get fuzzy around the edges, excuse the non-technical speak. For example while watching espn, with the scrolling ticker or a score on the bottom of the screen, there is just constant grainyness around them (non-hd channels). When a scene changes fast, someones face gets blury. Anyway I think I am very sour on this TV and I have the best buy guy coming by soon and no matter what he says I think I am going to return this for a Samsung or Panasonic. Sorry for the rant, what do you guys think? Any ideas, responses, or suggestions?
Thanks!

Seems like I recall people having alot of issues with the boxes from Comcast. Have you tried bypassing the box and tuning an an OTA HD broadcast? I have an HD/DVR box from Cox and I have had none of the issues you have. My HDMI to HDMI connection has worked flawlessly since day 1, and my component connections from my DVD player work great too. Before you go drop another grand on a different TV, I would make sure it's not your cable box. Report back and let us know what you find.
Hi all,
I've been a lurker for a while, and am seriously considering the 5060n (great hp employee discount is a big factor).
But I have two things holding me back and that is
1. The quality difference between the 5060n and my old 4:3 480i SD Sony 36" Wega. I can also get a refurb 4200n (would that be better or the same?)
2. This flickering thing that some have reported.
Why each is important!
1. The wife loves the USA network. Loves to watch Monk and Psych off of our SD DirecTivo. OK, I admit it, I like the shows also, so I don't want to watch these things all the while thinking they looked better on my Wega. I'm willing to go to a 42 inch refurb plasma (2005 hp model) if it means that the quality will look the same. (Connected through s-video).
2. I do play Gamecube with my son, and while I saw no flickering at BB, I'm afraid that this auto brightness thing will bite me when playing the cube. Anyone have any more comments on this? Again, I don't need flickering, especially when I'm stretching these games.
Thanks for the help guys.

dirtydan 08-24-06, 06:42 PM I have thr 4260n and I have found that the only time I see the "flicker" is when the HP is in Vivid mode, and I don't think anyone uses that setting. It is not really "Flicker", but a changing of brightness when the panel is being overdriven with a super bright picture.
manofsteele 08-25-06, 03:13 PM I really want to buy the 5060n or any plasma really, the problem is where I live they have a community DirectTv dish and each household has their own box and pays AT&T for the service. Now AT&T HE does not offer HD service because they would have to replace the community dishes. A lot of people where I live got their own DT dish , but my balcony is so small that I would not have the room so I watch SD TV.
When watching movies I have a top of the line Sony DVD player so that will be an amazing picture but I am weary of using stretch mode for 99% of the time I watch tv. How is the SD picture in stretch mode? Do people look screwy or does the picture look bad? I will be in this place for at least another 6 months so I am stuck with SD programming.
Any help you can give would be appreciated.
dirtydan 08-25-06, 03:41 PM SD will not be as good as a smaller anolog tv, as to filling the screen, there is generally a setting that won't look goofy.
Hey People,
I've read and read about the PL5060N and went to BB last week to see it in person. I was able to play with the settings in the store and I like what I saw, so I pulled the trigger today on the set. However, maybe I missed it posted on this thread, what is the best suggested connection set-up being that the set only has one HDMI input. I have a Sony NS70H and a DirectTv HD Box and can not decide which should get the HDMI port. Any and all ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

Try both HDMI and Component with your panel and Directv box, if you like HDMI better, get an HDMI switch. I have Dish 622 and it looks best on Component on my HP PL 4260n.

I'm in exactly the same position as you. I live in a property in San Jose that only has SD service by AT&T Home Entertainment (rip off bullsh1t company)... anyhow- I got this TV and after some adjustments it's been working great - even though I only get an SD picture.
Im A TV Newbie 08-26-06, 10:28 PM OK here goes nothing. After about a week of looking through this thread, and researching TVs online for about a month and a half I decided on the 4260 for my basement.
So, today I walk into BB and see it...even tho the website said they didnt have it at that specific store. So I'm checking it out and decide I wanted it for the [EDIT] price tag...then an employee comes up and I ask if they have any more left in the back. He says he can go check and that they also have an "open" item right behind us that I didn't see...says it comes with everything the [EDIT] one does except the box, only that it's [EDIT]. After confirming maybe 10-12 times that nothing was wrong and it came with everything, on the verge of being obnoxious, I decide to take that one.
After maybe 10 minutes I start thinking that if it's been a display for however many weeks, seeing how BB usually keeps DVD programs running that that would mean no logos, tickers, etc. It's already through the burn-in stage if you figure maybe 8-10 hours/day for a month give or take. Am I wrong in thinking this or did I make a mistake on picking the display? It has no scuffs or scratches, and looked exactly the same as the brand new one on display.
Also, I picked up the LG LH-E9674 5.1 Surround with Upconvert DVD player to hook up to it. Which brings me to my next help topic....wires. Does anyone have reccomendations for type or a site to buy them for a lower price than the 99.99 8ft. monster cable HDMI from BB? BB is delivering the TV and Surround System Monday and will be coming to install on Wed. and I don't have any wires, but I was assuming they came with component? I would like to upgrade to HDMI/DVI soon and hopefully someone out there has a site to get some from for a nice low price.
I don't know if it's inappropriate to tell prices or anything like that but if anyone is wondering it came out to right about [EDIT] for the tv and surround sound delivered and installed after tax. So I think I got a pretty good deal.
If you read all of that I thank you greatly and apologize lol, but without you all I don't know if I would have ever been able to make up my mind. Thanks again.
-Jack
P.S. - if it is indeed past the burn-in period would anyone mind posting their settings they use to get the best picture...I'm not good at messing around with things and don't want to mess anything up.
dirtydan 08-26-06, 11:04 PM I think you should wait to buy cables if BB is installing part of your setup, then if you need more cables go to Monoprice, I have their $17 HDMI cable , and it is heavy duty. My settings after break-in are
Bright 55
Contrast 39
Saturation 42
Hue 0
Sharpness 3
In your case if you don't have HiDef you might play with the Sharpness and also try S-Video, might make the Standard Def. better.
Im A TV Newbie 08-26-06, 11:22 PM thanks for the reply. so the set should come with the component wires? I saw a sign at BB talking about component s-video and hdmi...is s-video generally better than component?
im guessing you mean if i dont have hidef cable channels?
i'll be calling my cable company tomorrow to add the HD premium package and to order the hd box they offer. so i will have the HD channels by the end of the week hopefully.
dirtydan 08-26-06, 11:33 PM I doubt that BB will give you an HDMI cable, but they might give you a Component cable, I mentioned S- Video just so you would know that some people get a better picture with poor SD stations with it I use Componenet for HD but do have HDMI cable, but picture is slightly washed out with HDMI. Also I forgot to mention in your settings, I use Cool setting.
Mesaplayer 08-27-06, 01:08 AM My friend just bought the PL4260N today. We hooked it up and everything worked fine. I came over to his house later tonight and noticed a big problem. The screen had some vertical lines. I thought that maybe it was the input signal, but when I pushed the remote to change the source, the OSD had the lines in it also. So, I turned off the display, and unplugged it for a few minutes. Plugged it back in and the problem was still there. The entire screen has these barely visible vertical lines, every .5 inch or so. They are incredibly noticeable in the OSD. The text is almost unreadable due to these lines. So, the fact that the lines are in the OSD and in every input source tells me that it is a problem with the TV itself. Anyone else have this problem or any solutions? Sound like a return to anyone else?
Lucifer Sam 08-27-06, 07:40 AM How are video games on this thing? Anyone tried it? I can't decide if I should get the 360 or the ps3... I'm still going back and forth - but I'd kinda like to have something now rather than wait for the ps3 release...
Anyone do this? How's it look? Any "burn-in" problems?
dirtydan 08-27-06, 10:44 AM Mesaplayer. You might try disconnecting all inputs, then if that is no fix, try a different electical circuit. Next call HP. Make sure panel is off when pulling connectors.

I have my Xbox, Xbox 360, PS2, and Game Cube all hooked up to mine. I play 50% games and watch 50% tv on it. I've had my TV just over a month and haven't had any burn in issues. I don't play my games for hours on end though either.
I think the games look great on this TV. I was playing them on my 110 inch screen with my Panasonic projector. But, decided to buy this TV for my games, to save my bulb life and not mess with the hasstle of going into the theater to play games.
I play my games more now that I have them all hooked up to this tv. :)
Dominator13 08-28-06, 09:54 AM In response to your query about the (HDMI Audio Unavailable) I went thru the same thing and actually had Comcast send the strongest signal which took 30 minutes and still no sound! I haven't called back because I used the the normal Audio cables and ran them out of the receiver and directly to my Bose system so, no worries! I am going to research this further and will post my final results. I also ran my components as well so my family can watch the monitor with the elephant ear sound. :p
p.s. With the component hook up you can only get the Audio when in component mode, not HDMI!
Hovglove 08-28-06, 01:22 PM As an HP employee I've been ready to purchase the 4260 for a few weeks now but have help back because of this HDMI issue. I do have Comcast as my cable provider and want to be able to use the best connections for my setup.
If Comcast requires me to use component to the TV I'm stuck because my DVD does not have HDMI....so that basically a useless connection in my scenerio...
Any way to get a switch, etc..to get around this?

I have the 42". I game on mine and I love it. Usually don't play for my than 2 hours at a time. I'm probably have over 400 hours on mine and I do notice some image retention after playing, but then I simply switch over to the TV for 5 minutes or less and the retention is gone. I was definitely worried the first few times I saw it, but it goes away in no time. I still remain cautious.
I upgraded from a 27" 4:3 Panasonic using composite so it was a major difference. But my brother-in-law who has a Sony 34" XBR Tube using component said he thought mine was the same if not better than his.
websocket 08-28-06, 11:41 PM Someone mentioned that HP had the service manual on their website. I can't find it. Anybody have it?
kmd_mlc 08-29-06, 05:29 AM I would also like to get the service manual. I know that it is large but it sure would be great if someone has posted it or I can setup an ftp site to receive the file.
Thanks,

Charlienmr 08-29-06, 11:32 AM Wanted to add my thoughts on the HP PDPs. I got the 5060 a couple of months ago (EPP is great) and it has been wonderful. I probably don't have some of the problems others are having as it's the display for my HT and doesn't need to worry about producing any sound at all. ;) My 5060 had no TV signals to worry aout for the first 6 weeks either. It's connected to my receiver (Denon 2807) by HDMI. Until last week, the only signal it got was from my DVD player (Denon 1920, HDMI to receiver for movies). No problems with black bars on the sides, just on the top and bottom. BTW, tried component but HDMI is much better for the DVD player and somewhat better for the sat box.
Now, the second HDMI on the receiver has a DirectTV H20 HD receiver connected to it. The receiver happily switches between sources and both sound and video pass through flawlessly. The PQ is very good. I've played with the settings and they are somewhat different for the two sources. At any rate, I'll have to write them down and post them here later. I'll be taking a crack at a real calibration after another 50 hours or so. In the mean time, the settings posted here have helped me out, so thanks to all who posted. people who have seen the 5060 are amazed for two reasons. First, I regularly hear "I didn't know HP made TV's." Then I put on a HD football or baseball game or maybe the second LOTR and show them the scene where the wall at Helm's Deep gets blown up. I have some pretty good speakers and the scene is a big WOW. Ain't just the sound though. The 5060 shows good detail in the dark night scenes of battle. There's lots of action (meaning rapid motion) in shadowy lighting. That's a good test of the contrast and quality of the set. Try it out if you get a chance.
Anyway, I'm happy with it. :)
Then I put on <snip> the second LOTR and show them the scene where the wall at Helm's Deep gets blown up.Yeah, that's a good scene to test with. Too bad LOTR is 2.35 aspect ratio. When I first went to show off the TV to my wife she says, I thought this TV wasn't supposed to have the black bars on the top and bottom when watching widescreen movies? :)
Stupid aspect ratios, but that's a topic for a completely different discussion.
Dominator13 08-29-06, 01:06 PM I am using the HDMI (Component hook-ups for the audio reasons) but my question is, what settings should I be at for the post 100 hr burn in? It seems that the picture is a little foggy at the settings:
B: 55 - 50 - 52 - 54 - 53
C: 39 - 38 - 40 - 42 - 43
S: 42 - 42 - 45 - 45 - 47
H: 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0
S: 3 - 14 - 18 - 18 - 16
Blue: On/Off ????????
T: C - C - C - W - S

rafael1107 08-29-06, 02:58 PM I am completely new to the plasma/lcd thing.. I am happy to say that we are tentatively buying the pl4260N this weekend (if all goes well). My question after reading this thread is... What is burn in??? Am I going to have to do something special... Please help.
Charlienmr 08-29-06, 03:12 PM flyjar, you are so right. Too many aspect ratios (4:3, 1.85:1, 2.35:1) and too many ways to display each one (pillar, stretch, zoom this, zoom that). And don't forget setting the DVD player and sat or cable box as well as the TV. It's amazing we can see anything at all. On the bright side, AVS has all the stuff we need assuming we have enough time to find it and read it.
dirtydan 08-29-06, 03:15 PM I suggest, if you have some time, that you read the Master Burn-in Sticky up toward the top of first page. Basically you need to know difference between burn-in and image retention, totally different things. Go the Menu in HP and Video settings, change User Settings , set brightness and contrast down as low as you can and still have a watchable picture, set sharpness down close to zero.

manofsteele 08-29-06, 04:29 PM Has anyone experienced pixel burnout yet with their 42 or 50 HP plasma?
manofsteele 08-29-06, 04:38 PM I'm in exactly the same position as you. I live in a property in San Jose that only has SD service by AT&T Home Entertainment (rip off bullsh1t company)... anyhow- I got this TV and after some adjustments it's been working great - even though I only get an SD picture.
Thanks. I agree. I cannot stand AT&T HE, they are the worst. If it wasn't for my mini balcony I would pony up for my own dish but for the near future I am stuck with SD. What mode do you watch SD TV in? Do you stretch it to fill the screen? Can you post your settings? Also for SD I use an S-video and for DVD I use component and a digital for audio to my harmon kardon reciever. It sucks that I ahve top of the line everything and a bottom of the line sattelite reciever. The weakest link does break the chain. I need to move.
Thanks in advance.
I want to get the 5060n. I figured that even if the SD doesn't look as good as a 42 inch TV, I'll be future proofed for when more stations go HD.
My only remaining problem is that schizophrenic auto brightness which seems to have been a deal breaker for a couple of 5060 owners. I know that the 4260 owners don't seem to see this problem.
I have found the link to the service manual, but I don't see how to turn off the auto brightness. Who ever has it or has looked it, what is it that I would have to do? Just increase the max brightness setting? Is this what tells it when something is "too bright"?

dirtydan 08-29-06, 06:56 PM I think it only happens when using "Vivid" mode, unless you set your "User" setting too high, this is the case with my 4260.
Awesome dirtyDan! I wondered if this was being experienced by sets that were set to a high brightness.
Now it's just a matter of when to purchase the 5060. I don't feel that I *need* to get it right now, so I'm going to wait for sales. Hmm, labor day is approaching. What better way to celebrate being employed than buying a plasma!?
Charlienmr 08-29-06, 09:10 PM flygar,
How do like your Harmony remote? I've decided I need one and the Harmony remotes are well thought of on other AVS forums. I've got several things to control and if I get anything else with a remote, my Sig O will need to get a bigger basket. Not good. I think I am actually done buying for a while, so now that i have everythiing I need to control, it's universal remote time.
Thanks for all the info. Nice web page.

I have an 880 and it does it all.
I like the styling of the Harmony 550 much better than the 880. The number buttons are a little small and the volume and channel controls are hard buttons as opposed to soft, probably my biggest complaint. I love the backlit blue LCD screen and the play, ff, rewind, etc. buttons are perfect. The navigation and OK buttons are nice and responsive as well. Lightweight and very comfortable in you hand.
Style - 8.5/10
It was very easy to program, however I didn't like the software. I found that using the online program was much better then installing the software that came with the remote. The software seemed to lock up and then I couldn't program the remote. But I never had problems with the online program. Sometimes the more advanced stuff is a little complicated, difficult to navigate, and the help isn't very useful. After a while you get used to where the setting are. The remote is programed based on the brand and model numbers of you components, so all the features of the original remote are selectable from the LCD screen of the Harmony remote. And someday I'm going to install recessed lighting and use the remote to control the lights as well, sweet.
Programing - 8.7/10
My wife loves the help button for when things don't go quite right. And my mom likes it because there's 1 remote for everything. The batteries lasted me at least 4 months, and that's the ones that were in the unit when is shipped. 4 AAA and the remote is still light weight.
Easy of use & battery life- 9.5/10
Things could definitely be improved, and I don't know everything else that's out there to compare it against, but I'm very happy with mine.
Overall ratting 8.8/10
BTW I got mine for about $100
Charlienmr 08-30-06, 11:12 AM Thanks for the info on Harmony. Seems like the right brand. Time to order, I think.
manofsteele 08-30-06, 11:45 AM Has anyone experienced pixel burnout yet on thier HP TV?
Has anyone experienced pixel burnout yet on thier HP TV?
Nope
Im A TV Newbie 08-31-06, 10:47 AM well got my 4260 and the LG surround sound installed today. already watched ATL and love it. Still have V for Vendetta, Stealth, and The Sentinel to watch that I rented. Can't wait.
Got the 360 hooked up with some Optical cables...Madden 07 in 5.1...amazing haha. HDMI is on order from monoprice for the DVD player. Got components to hook up the digital box waiting and ready for friday when the cable company comes to hook up the HD Cable Box.
I do notice some IR when I get done playin Madden 07, but only on a pitch black screen. Still haven't tried the white wash, but seems like it should work fine.
Heres the only pic I have right now...the 2 satellite speakers are on each side of my chair back further, and when I get it cleaned up I'll post the whole basement setup. I will be working on building a backboard piece to hide the wires, which I didn't even notice until I saw the picture. Anyways, heres the pic.

dirtydan 08-31-06, 03:20 PM I'm A TV Newbie, don't worry about using the "White Wash" that liitle bit of IR should go away upon using the panel for normal viewing (DVD, Cable, etc.) I have heard that using the White Wash causes premature aging of the panel, should only be used in extreme cases to remove IR.
Grifter113 08-31-06, 11:18 PM Hello everyone. Just bought my HP 4260 last week, thanks to everyone here for confirming my initial opinion of the model (it's incredible!!!). This is my first HDTV and plasma. I am running the break in disc now, think I am at about 30 - 40 hours. Settings are 25 across the board, except for Hue and Sharpness, which are at zero. I have the blue screen ON and the temp is set to Cold.
Rest of the setup is:
- Onkyo SR503 receiver
- Polk R30's for the front, R15's for the rear and a CSi25 for the center
- Sony 150 watt powered sub
- Sony 5-disc DVD player (running through composite, don't kill me)
- Sony VCR (used mainly for a tuner, yes I know it has a built in tuner)
- My room is 15' x 15', distance from TV is about 10 - 11 feet.
Anyway, just need some confirmation on my settings and I have a few questions. One, is there anyway to see how long I have been running the TV for (built in timer, etc.)?
Two, has anyone used this for a PC monitor? Not just for a HTPC, but for surfing, playing WOW (for limited times) and MS Money? Would like to know if I could get one of these for my bedroom and double it as a PC monitor. I currently have a Dell 24" lcd, so it's just a thought.
And third, how long should I run the break in disc at a time? I've read people stating to run this while I sleep. Is 8 hours too much? Just wondering.
I will post pics as soon as I get some decent cables and finish my break in period. I really appreciate the advice given so far on this forum and would REALLY appreciate some advice on my questions.
Thanks!
dirtydan 08-31-06, 11:26 PM #1 Don't know of a way to check this.
#2 If you can use the VGA input on the HP, then you should be good to go.
#3 You can run that disc all night, but really, most people have just cranked down the contrast and brightness to a watchable level for the first 00 or 200 hrs. I'll check in the HP service manual to see if the hours in use can be accessed.
PitzLives 09-02-06, 10:43 AM Has anyone used a PS2 with Yellow/Red/White connections with this TV? I have the 42", and playing Madden yesterday I found that there is a split second delay between pushing a button the controller and the image that appears on the screen. Normally, this isnt a big deal, however anyone that plays Madden, golf games, etc. will know that timing can be a critical part of the game (kicking field goals, for instance). Could this just be a result of using a less-than-optimal video connection? If so, is there a PS2 component cable that can be purchased anywhere?
cheapfokker 09-04-06, 10:23 PM Hi,
I have the 42" . My cable box has a DVI output only. How can I go DVI to HDMI and have audio for my speakers? Can I use the optical audio output from the cable box to the TV? Thanks!
dirtydan 09-04-06, 11:54 PM I don't see an Optical in in my manual, looks like you will either need an A/V receiver for your optical or just use RCAs for sound. I have found that Componenet works better for me using Dish box, and optical from box to A/V unit.
cheapfokker 09-04-06, 11:58 PM Does the HDMI input allow you to use RCA also, or is it all HDMI or nothing?
dirtydan 09-05-06, 12:00 AM Does the HDMI input allow you to use RCA also, or is it all HDMI or nothing?
I stand corrected, looks like you can use HDMI to DVI connection and hook optical from box to that PC/DVI optical input.I think you can use RCAs without any problem.
cheapfokker 09-05-06, 12:09 AM Ahh yes...I see that now in the manual, thanks! I just got it last week and I'm still working on the bugs. What's the best way to adjust the color on the TV?
dirtydan 09-05-06, 12:18 AM If you have a DVD with the THX add-on you can calibrate with that, but for the first 100 or 200 hours I would just go to the menu picture adjustment and using the "User" settings turn down the Brightness and Contrast to a lower level that still gives you a decent picture, after break-in period use THX or some other calibration method
cheapfokker 09-05-06, 01:24 AM Thanks! I also bought an upscaling DVD player/recorder. What is the best way to hook it up with my cable box? My cable box has DVI output and component outputs. My DVD recorder has coax and component inputs. Right now I have coax from cable box to DVD, then HDMI from DVD to TV. The picture doesn't look as defined as from the box to the TV via component cables. Would I be better off to use the componet in on the DVD instead of the coax? Ideally, should I get an HDMI switcher, and use that to switch back and forth from my cable box DVI and DVD HDMI. I could also use the compoment out on the cable box to the comp. in on the DVD for a recordable signal.
Clear as mud?
cheapfokker 09-05-06, 02:26 AM One more thing, I've read that other users prefer 720p over 1080i...how do you switch back and forth? On my HD channels, the OSD indicates 1080i. On my HDMI input (DVD player) the OSD indicates 480p. The regular cable channels indicate 480i.
Thanks
dirtydan 09-05-06, 10:36 AM If you don't have an A/V reciever you will need RCA cables from Cable box to DVD, use Componenet from box to DVD, use DVI/HDMI from box to Panel plus RCAs for sound, to get DVD to Panel, use Component cable and RCAs for sound, use Componenet #2 on panel. If you have 2 Comonent outputs on Cable Box, you might be better off using Componenet from Cable box to Component#1 on panel. You want to avoid any Coax if possible. It looks like you have HDMI output on DVD, you can try that to Panel with RCAs or try that PC/DVI optical input on the Panel As to 720p and 1080i, that is selected in your Cable box menu, try both, go with what looks best to you. Now, how was this for MUD? lol
rafael1107 09-05-06, 12:30 PM I am completely new to the plasma/lcd thing.. I am happy to say that we are tentatively buying the pl4260N this weekend (if all goes well). My question after reading this thread is... What is burn in??? Am I going to have to do something special... Please help.
I previously posted this and got no reply. We have already bought the pl4260N and I really need help with this. What should I be doing at initial use of the set.
cheapfokker 09-05-06, 01:46 PM Thanks Dan, I'll hook it all up and let you know how it goes.

I suggest, if you have some time, that you read the Master Burn-in Sticky up toward the top of first page. Basically you need to know difference between burn-in and image retention, totally different things. Go the Menu in HP and Video settings, change User Settings , set brightness and contrast down as low as you can and still have a watchable picture, set sharpness down close to zero. Here's a direct link to the thread dirtydan was referring to.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=608677
BTW this is a very commonly asked question that can probably be found very easily with any search engine.
Doug_Eldred 09-05-06, 02:51 PM I've seen specific references to things like 100 hours, a special CD that's supposed to be run, etc., but since I don't yet have a PL4260N I can't be more specific.
Looking at the manuals that are online (from the HPshopping site) the only real details I could find are in the warranty link, which gives some examples of what NOT to do.
I think the advice I've read can be summarized as saying try to avoid constant screen items (invariant text or graphics - menu bars, scrolling news such as CNN and others have, Front Row which has a lot of invariant content, etc.), use low contrast and brightness (within reason), etc. for the first 100 or so hours.
I'm surprised, based on others' comments, that no one has responded AND that this isn't clear from the box contents, but maybe someone else who actually has the equipment will jump in.
Doug
PS: There's also supposed to be an all-white-screen solution or something for reducing retained images. A little common sense will go a long way to avoid problems, though.
cheapfokker 09-05-06, 04:14 PM Ok, I have my dvi-HDMI cable box wired in and it looks great, but I'm not getting any sound from the pc/dvi audio input. I hooked it up to the optical audio output of my cable box (i had to use some sort of adapter on the end of the optical audio, a pointy thing) sticking the pointy end into the HP, but no audio at all. I'm beginning to think that this isn't an optical audio input, but a digital coax input. Kinda bummed because I can't return it now that the plastic packaging is shot.
See pages 4 & 5 of your manual. It's not an optical or coaxial input, it's "normal"
RCA audio (right & left spearkers). You know like the kind your headphones plug in to (3.5 mm)? If you want surround sound anyway, you would hook up the cable box (optical or coaxial output) to a surround sound receiver (optical or coaxial input).
BTW - What DVD recorder did you buy that has component inputs? I'm looking to get one. Or did you mean PVR, like the kind you rent from the cable company?
peterso2 09-05-06, 08:26 PM I have a choice of getting the new 5060 tv or a pl5000n for much less. Should I spring for the refurb? It has 3000:1 contrast ratio vs the 10000:1 but it seems like its a much better buy, im just scared about it being refurbished? The HP EPP program is who I will be buying with. Are there any concerns I should have with warranty or whatnot? I'm just struggling to decide.
Thanks!

This should be a good deal since it is from HP, if you don't like it exchange it. That model, I think, is basically a Panasonic
cheapfokker 09-05-06, 09:19 PM Your right, it's a headphone input jack, 1/8 inch. I bought a 1/8 inch jack to 2 rca plugs (red and white) and it works fine. I have a Phillipps DVD recorder.

Anyone else have any experience with Refurb? I know it can mean anything but it just seems like its a great deal as long as it works. The return policy works for 21 days, so I guess I would notice a problem in 3 weeks? Tax is refunded but not S&H which would be kinda pricey on a big screen I can imagine? Once again, this forum is very valuable!

That is interesting. I connect my DISH 622 HDMI directly to 5060 at 1080i, I have both sound and picture.

How does the picture compare between 480p and 1080i? I found that component works best on my 42". I think your problem has to do with your cable box, lots of them have probs. with HDMI to HP, in fact the Dish 622 has a reputation for failing sound when using HDMI, though mine works fine if I switch to HDMI.

kabwe65 09-08-06, 02:27 AM Can anyone tell me if the 5060N has any kind of auto volume leveling setting for the sound? Didn't see anything about this in the user manual or on the HP web site. Thx

No, I have Dish622.

What are the choices for Aspect ratio in the Moto box, what your doing doesn't sound right, put the HP in Auto or 16x9 and go to Box and try all. What does a 4x3 sd signal look like?

Yes I have the motorola DCT 6412 III as my cable box. I talked to Insight today and they had no clue what to do. I read that some people with commcast have had the same problem so i suppose it is my box then. Thank you everyone for the help. If you have any more ideas please let me know.
moonpup 09-12-06, 09:39 PM Long time lurker, first time poster.
Bought the 5060 over a week ago and couldn't be happier. Fit, finish, and quality of picture image is outstanding. Living in Adelphia land (until Comcast takes over entirely) my new HD box (8300HD Scientific Atlantic) runs flawlessly over HDMI.
If someone could point out access to the service menu, or the manual I would appreciate it (not sure when my 100 hours is up). Can't wait for this weekend with NCAA football!
HP PL4260N Service Menu
Turn the TV on
Press the MENU button and select "User OSD Menu"
Select "Audio", "Settings" and then "Balance".
Using the remote, press 9 ,1 ,8 & OK buttons.
NOTE: If necessary, re-enter the number keys, and then press OK on the remote control.
To exit, press 9 ,1 ,8 & 9 buttons on the remote
NOTE: If the character “M” appears on the screen, press the Menu button first.

Hi All,
Just go my pl5060n last week and so far so good. Thanks to all for their great post making the purchase decision easier. However, few questions, if you could kindly reply
1. What is a better (or any different) in a VGA or DVI (HDMI adapter) connection.
I have my TV hooked up to my DEC currently with VGA
2. What is the ideal user settings for brightness, contrast, sharpness?
3. What does the phase adjust and clock adjust do? What would be the ideal settings?
4. Motion Blur - common problem or should I be concerned?
Thanks in advance
dirtydan 09-14-06, 03:14 PM What is "DEC"? Your best settings should be as low as you can set contrast and brightness and still see a decent picture, this for first 100 to 200 hours, set sharpness way down near the end of the bar, saturation can be set wherever it looks best to you.
Thanks dan...DEC = Digital Entertainment Center
dirtydan 09-14-06, 03:30 PM Thanks dan...DEC = Digital Entertainment Center
Ok, I always refer to that as an "A/V" unit, I have heard that VGA is better, but I have never tried that. I have all my outputs from my Dish 622 going straight to my HP and have found that for me the Component works better then HDMI, but I can use HDMI when I want to use the TVs speakers and leave my A/V turned off. I don't run any video through my A/V. I don't know anything about that phase and clock adjustment, guess I will have to bone up on that. By the way I have the HP sevice manual and also a small file on how to get into the "Service Mode", if you want either, let me know.
dirtydan 09-14-06, 03:34 PM I see that the Phase and clock are used in the "PC" settings only, I have yet to get the cable and adapter to hook my pc up, not sure I want that as my pc monitor is right next to where I sit which is also where I sit to watch tv.

You could call HP, n
but I doubt they will do anything about 1 pixel. You say it is both stuck and flashing?
Scotsman1 09-15-06, 10:10 AM You could call HP, nut I doubt they will do anything about 1 pixel. You say it is both stuck and flashing?
It's kind of wierd. When the pixel shouldbe black it is and I cannot see any problem, but when it is supposed to be a lighter color it is red and tends to "flash". I cant determine if it "flashes" to blue or to the color it is supposed to be at that time.
I talked with HP Tech Support and they had me restart the TV, try a different input and try different cables - after trying everything we determined it was the TV. The Tech support guy has forwarded the problem to his supervisor and they are going to get back to me tonight with what they will do about it. I did want to know if anyone has heard from HP on what their Cell Policy is ?? In their guarantee they comment that screens are not 100% perfect and refer to their support site, but the site has no info on what they consider defective. I just did not want them to say it isn't covered then find they change the policy based on who answers the phone or something like that.
It is right in the middle of the screen and can be noticeable.
Thanks
Brian
dirtydan 09-15-06, 10:20 AM That is how I read the warranty, I doubt they will do any more then a service call, maybe they know of a way to get that pixel working. How close do you have to be to see that bad pixel?

richard korsgren 09-15-06, 05:57 PM to others..just another reason for buying a tv from Costco. They have quite a range of sets. Prices are not the lowest but the warranty is the greatest. A good peace of mind I would think. It is for me.

Cooper0103 09-15-06, 10:51 PM At the price that BB has the PL4260N I'm so very tempted to get that thing and replace my older Tosh 50H82.
I have a couple of quick questions though...if anyone can help me?
Currently we sit aprox 9 to 9.5' from our 50" RPTV...would moving down to a plasma that is only 42" be ok at that distance? I would love to stay at 50" but the like I said before the price goes up quite a bit from 42 to 50" in the plasmas.
Is the HP pretty reliable? I keep reading people recommending the Panny over the HP but at BB I thought both looked about even IMO.
Does the HP have some sort of stretch mode for reg. 4:3 TV viewing so you don't have to have black side bars?
Thanks in advance!!!!
dirtydan 09-16-06, 12:31 AM It has strech for 4x3, I,m at 9 feet from my 42" and it is fine, but a 50" would be better. The HP is a fine plasma as far as I am concerned.
blazingsoles 09-16-06, 01:58 PM Tech question, I'm sure Dan has the answer ;)
Here's my setup - I have HD Satellite DirectTV, with HDMI from the cable receiver to the t.v. for video - but my audio goes through my Sony HTIB/DVD player via component cables. I'm getting "HDMI audio unavailable" I'm assuming due to the above. Is there really much benefit in using HDMI audio? With my current setup - wouldn't I be better off just using a DVI cable from the receiver to the t.v. and using my HDMI from my upconverting DVD/HTIB to the t.v

You say Directv and Cable rec.? Your audio to Sony is what type cable? Without answers to these questions I can only suggest that on some cable and Sat boxes , only one output is active at one time, you might not be able to use HDMI and Component at the same time. Try component from sat (cable) box to TV, use HDMI from Sony to TV. For sound you might need to use RCAs red/white from box to TV. I assume that your Sony is a Home Theater type, if so you can run digital cable, toslink or Coax from Sat (cable) box to the Sony then you will have two choices to hear sound, Sony or TV if RCAs are connected from box to TV.
blazingsoles 09-16-06, 03:02 PM Thanks Dan - I did what you recommended. Works fine! What I was eventually planningI was trying to figure a way to run HDMI from both DirectTV and upconverting DVD/HTIB. I see that it's not possible as I would have to either have to have two HDMI inputs to the t.v., or would need a manual switch. With the switch, since my audio runs through the DVD/HTIB - I couldn't have both audio/video through HDMI.
Thanks for your recommendations.

Your welcome, I think that you will find that component will look just as good as HDMI for HD.
TomHuffman 09-16-06, 08:38 PM There is an endless discussion in this thread about accessing the service menu, but nothing so far as I can tell about what exactly you should do once you get there.
After looking at it, I can see that it offers controls for adjusting gray scale, offsets for the basic user adjustments, and a method for isolating the primary colors. For the most part these adjustments are pretty much useless unless you have equipment explicitly designed for measuring gray scale.
So what is the point of obtaining service menu access?

Maybe there is more info on using the service mode in the Service Manual.

spwango 09-18-06, 04:20 PM Anybody using this panel (specifically the 42"er) for gaming? I've seen a couple of mentions in this thread, but no details.
Hi everyone,
I have read significant portions of this thread (it is a bit long to read all of it!), and have seen some very complimentary remarks and a few disparaging remarks on this TV. The local BB is selling this TV at 1800 $CA (in Vancouver, BC), which is $700 cheaper than the same-size Panasonic. Can I just ask any of you with time to spare to give me a long-term opinion, now that you've had a chance to live with it, assess its reliability, and compare it against other TVs, especially new models recently on the market? I'd just like a bit of encouragement before I sink so much cash into a TV to watch a couple of movies and a hockey game each week (I've lived with a 22" Mitsubishi CRT for 15 years, so this would truly be a leap!). Anyway, thanks much for your time.
Bryan
dirtydan 09-18-06, 11:58 PM If you have HD, you won't be unhappy if you buy the HP. I think you can buy it for less from HP, unless your talking about the 50" for that price. I have the 42" and it is very nice.
lobotron 09-19-06, 11:33 AM HI what setting are you using to get those nice colors in your tv. Is it vivid or user. Nice picture. I got mine sunday, but i am still trying to get a nice picture.

I use "User" and settings are:
Brightness +59
Contrast +39
Saturation +4
Sharpness +3
Color Temp Cold
For yours, you should tone down the brightness and contrast as low as you can , and still have a watchable PQ, this for break-in period.
My settings are used with Component, if using HDMI, settings will probably be different. I have Dish 622 DVR and it seems to output a more washed-out PQ when using HDMI.
lobotron 09-19-06, 02:09 PM I am using HDMI, righ now i have to Brightness and contrast to 40. There is a weird sound coming from the plasma tv like poping sound from the back of the tv, not all the time. Have you seen Lumber screenshot of his P4260N on the bottom of first page. It looks real nice. I can't get mine like that.

I had no idea there were size limitations. Sorry about that. I really had to shrink these down in order meet the size restrictions.

What TV service do you have? I don't have a clue what that sound is, can it be heard over the audio when watching a program?
jkrebs2 09-19-06, 09:37 PM Hi All,
I'm new to the forum and have gotten a lot of insight from you all so far. Thank you!
I just purchased a PL4260N and have been extremely pleased with it so far.
One question I have involves the "Panorama" aspect ratio. It rarely appears as an option in the drop down menu and I have not been able to find out much info. about it. Does anyone have this option available all the time?
Thanks!

I believe that works only when sending a 480i signal the the HP
Edit. I just tried all kinds of set- ups and could never find a Panorama choice in the aspect settings, but I have seen it at least once. I have a neighbor with the same HP, I will find out from him tomorrow.
Thank you Dan, for taking the time to reply. I'm talking about the 42-inch. The price is pretty amazing for a decent brand, and I'm fed up with watching wide-screen movies on a 22-inch CRT, so I will probably take the plunge.

Take a look ,if you can, behind the HP when it is turned off at night when the room is completely dark. You will see one or two blue lights inside the case, watch to see if the flash off and on, this might make be what is making that sound sound. If this happens I don't know if it is a bad thing or not, also look for and flashes like electrical arching, if you see that, call HP.

Hovglove 09-21-06, 10:06 AM Hi, I've had the 4260 for a few weeks now..no issues at all..I'm sure there's better units but for the $$$$ I couldn't find any. The Vizio seems to have all sorts of quality issues...the HP is a nice TV...are you an employee? I shopped for a few years before pulling the trigger waiting for price drops, etc...then after a week HP offered an additional 10% off which I could not get retro...oh well, still a good deal.
Once you get it setup and are used to the controls, etc..you'll be happing...I do not mess with too much..I used the 4-3 stretch mode from the cable box and then you can play with the different HP modes within the TV..have fun..

Bryan,
Like you I spent quite a bit of time comparing HDTVs. The last tv I purchased was 13 years ago and a lot has changed. I looked at specs until I had a headache. I finally trusted what my eyes saw, the price tag, and my knowledge that HP builds good products and they stand behind them. I bought the PL4260N and I have been very happy with it. It was a good move.

cheapfokker 09-21-06, 05:56 PM Hi,
For some reason, the zoom modes don't work through my cable box (hooked up via component cables). When I watch through my DVD/Recorder (S-video), the whole screen is filled (16:9), but through cable, all SD channels have the side black bars...the HD channels do not. When OI select the zoom mode, it distorts the picture, making the people look skinnier, and keeping the side bars. Anyone have any advice how I can fix this?
Thanks

I have the same problem and setup and have never quite figured this out. The different Aspect Ratios available through the panel will not stretch the picture, at least through Component.
The workaround? Use the Zoom/Stretch modes on the Cable Box if you're cable box supports it. I have Cablevision Digital IO through a Scientific Atlanta 4200HD and its zoom modes work rather well.

Hi Bryan, I have had this PDP for about 4 weeks and I am completely satisfied thus far *knocks on wood*. The only disparaging remarks I've heard on this panel are from Waxmaster in this thread (edges suffer from macro blocking/excessive motion artifacts until sharpness turned way down) and the Amazon review complaining of massive pixelation every 5 minutes.
I am not an expert by any means, but when all is said and done I think many of these complaints revolve heavily around the source material. I notice significant pixellation when watching certain HDTV channels (like Action Sports on Universal HD), but I know this isn't due to my panel, it's Cablevision's feed (having 2 HD boxes hooked up in my home, 1 to a 60" Sony LCD Projection and 1 to my HP, they both suffer the same pixellation during the same broadcasts). I bought myself an Oppo upconverting DVD player and I suffer no image problems whatsoever on anything I watch on my HP
Other than that, the only other cons I personally have are:
--cheap remote (easily replaced)
--1024x768 native resolution (when 1080p (1920x1080) is coming into its own just about now)
--lack of HDMI inputs (easily solved with a switcher)
Overall though I am quite happy thus far with the purchase. This panel is a tremendous value--you're pretty much spending a grand and a half USD for a quality HDTV when you could very easily have spent twice that much for something just slightly larger and slightly more feature rich. In your situation think of this as your bedroom TV 5-6 years down the road when you can afford a nice 70" SED for the living room around that time!
cheapfokker 09-21-06, 08:54 PM What is pixellation? Sometimes I notice the top line of the picture is screwed up. This happens when the black side bars are present sometimes, not all the times.

I think this happens when watching an HD channel and it goes to an SD commercial.

Sorry, I misspelled it, it's pixelation. It's when you can see the individual pixels of an image when you're not supposed to. Usually fast moving, complex scenes will result in pixelation. I believe this is the result of an HD feed either a) not being able to process the video information quickly enough or b) not dellivering enough bandwidth to maintain the integrity of the moving image.
If you Google it you'll get a better idea of what it is, I apologize in advance if my explanation isn't clear enough.

This concerns me. I am about to pull the trigger on this TV but for the next year where I live I will have to watch SD TV until my community upgrades its satelites to get an HDTV signal. While watching SD you can never get it to fill the screen and look normal? I could have sworn I read it here that people have done it. My satelite box uses S-video because it is ancient and I have AT&T home entertainment. Am I making a mistake buying this now while I can only watch SD TV and not actually get to stretch it out with the HP panel? My satelite box will not stretch the image, it is very limited plus my signal comes through my tivo where I use composite to my TV. Basically S-Video to the Tivo and composite from the Tivo to my TV.

#1 Yes, 5 feet is about the minimum
#2 Burn-in, no, image retention, yes , but will not be seen while viewing TV programming, then after a short while IR is gone.
#3 My feeling from reading many forums is that most don't buy EW.
spwango 09-22-06, 04:18 PM How much clearnance do these bad boys need? I'm going to be stuffing mine on a built-in recessed countertop. It'll have plenty of top clearance, a foot and a half or so of clearance behind it, but the sides are going to be VERY close to the wall (without the dumbo ears)--probably one quarter to one eight of an inch clearance on each side...that going to be problematic?

I have a friend who put his in an enterteinment center with the dumbos, he has about an inch on each side and no clearsnce at top and bottom, he took the stand off, but his ET is open at the back, so he gets ventilation that way. The book says 4" top,and sides.

Straight from the User Guide:
4 in. (10 cm) minimum above TV
4 in. (10 cm) minimum at sides
2.8 in. (7 cm) minimum behind TV

I put in about 45min-1hr at a time w/ my 360 and have yet to experience any burn-in or IR. However I make it a point to keep the static gauges, life bars and other images off the screen by hitting the Pause button or Guide button every so often.
I was at BB today and found the PL4260N as an open box, likely the floor model, for sale, for $1000. I called my wife to try to get her to convince my NOT to get it, but she said we "needed" it. :-) So I picked it up and the four year service plan for $300. Since it was the floor display, I didn't get any documentation, no remote, and no speakers. I already printed all the documentation from HP's site, and I'm probably going to order the speakers ($89) and remote ($129) from HP. I have it set up in the bedroom, so I don't have the space for better speakers, but I'm patching something together to at least give me some sound until the parts come in.

I got this TV and have the same issues as you and love it. The SD pictures don't look bad with S-video and the directv box... some are better than others but that goes for everything. I can't wait to get HD but I plan on grabbing the PS3 in another 2 months and our community is supposed to have HD within 6 months.
