View Full Version : Burn A Dvd From My Moxie Box !
stuntpilot 04-18-06, 11:46 AM Hello Everyone !!
Does anyone know how I can burn a DVD from my recorded HD cable that is now on my Adelphia Cable MOXIE box ?
Do I need special software ?
I also have a SONY Laptop with windows xp and a DVD burner .... maybe I need to transfer to that, but I'd rather be able to do this with a DVD recorder that I buy separately. I also have a nice Hitachi DLP 60" with an LCD screen BTW that I love (Director's Series .... if anyone wants to know about it.....).
I am a stuntman here in LA, and I have several stunts I have recorded on the box, and I want to burn them, erase the recorded material and put them on my DVD reel that I'm making finally :)
Thanks !!
paul
twitchee3 04-18-06, 04:31 PM You can not record to a DVD in HD quality. You can not even record to a DVD directly from the box in standard definition quality digitally. The only way to record to a DVD in analog format is to get a DVD recorder and hook it up either through the composite or s-video outputs on the Moxi to the inputs on the DVD burner, play the content manually on the Moxi while simultaneously recording to the DVD. Does your Moxi have firewire (IEEE1394 ports)? If it does, it MAY be possible to transfer HD quality video to your computer, but i have heard that the Moxi does not allow this. We have two Moxi's from Adelphia here in SoCal and they both have firewire ports, but i have not yet attempted to transfer content from the DVR to my PC yet, just too lazy to go get the firewire cable i guess  Other DVR STB's allow DVR content (that is not 5c protected) to be transfered to a computer via firewire, but the success of this process is spotty at best and always depends on all hardware/software involved and may for some unknown reason simply refuse to work when it seems it should. I have not heard of ANYONE successfully attempting this on the Moxi, but post in the firewire recording and Moxi threads to see if you can get a specific response. The one thing you CAN do is record to DVHS (provided your Moxi has firewire ports), although again I have not heard of anyone doing this successfully with the Moxi, but this is a feature that the makers of the Moxi intended to work, so it should be compatible as DVHS recorders are 5c compatible, although they are quite expensive. Also, you will be able to get HD/digital video and digital audio (DD 5.1 if available) to record to the DVHS. It will be the same digital quality as the original recording, unlike with an analog hookup to a DVD recorder.
bigmatt63052 05-17-06, 03:10 PM Okay, I need a little help, and your previous post helped a little. I have a panasonic vcr/dvd burner combo. I am wanting to hook it up to my Charter Moxi box so I can be watching TV, and if I want, record a show I am watching live to a dvd. Also, I want to be able to record something and then burn it to a DVD. I have tried next to everything to get this to work. Please, walk me through how to do this step by step. I would really appreciate it, thanks.

Are you using the Moxi for HD programming?
If so, hook the Moxi to your HDTV using the component connection (Green, Blue, and Red RCA cables for video). Then, connect either the S-video or composite output of the Moxi to the input of your DVD recorder. If you use the RCA (analog) audio connection for your TV, you will need to split the analog audio output (red and white RCA plugs) on the Moxi. You need to deliver the left (white) channel to both the correct input on your HDTV and the correct input on your DVD recorder. Do the same for the right (red) analog audio channel. S-video will deliver slightly better quality, but your DVD recorder may only have composite in. All programming, including HD programming, will be recorded in SD (480i) because current DVD recorders cannot record in HD resolutions, and you are not using interfaces which support HD resolutions. Now, when you want to record something, just tune your DVD recorder to the right input and hit record. The Moxi will simultaneously output video out of component, s-video, and composite. You cannot use this method, however, if you use DVI to your HDTV display, as the Moxi disables output over all other video interfaces when a DVI cable is connected. If you are viewing TV through the HDTV (via component) while you are recording a DVD, EVERYTHING you see on the TV will be recorded to the DVD. To record programs stored in the Moxi DVR, simply play it through Moxi and record to DVD in the same method.
Hope this helps.
bigmatt63052 05-18-06, 12:11 AM Hi, no I'm not using it for HD. Its just normal digital cable. Would the same steps apply?
twitchee3 05-18-06, 02:14 AM Yes, but you are probably not using component to your TV, so if you are using s-video to your display, use composite video (yellow RCA connector) to the DVD recorder, and if you're using composite video to the TV, then use s-video (if this is available as a video input on your DVD recorder) to your DVD recorder. You will still need to split the analog audio out (RCA red and white) feed from the Moxi, one for the DVD recorder and one for the display ( or any stereo receiver you have it connected to). You can get these splitters for the audio at any Radio Shack store, you just need 2x adapters which have 1x RCA Male plug to 2x RCA Female Jacks. Other than that, the same steps apply.
Good luck and don't be afraid to ask any further questions. ;)
Spencermartin 09-20-06, 05:13 AM Hello Twitchie,
I'm looking for the best way burn a DVD from my Charter Moxie box. Does anyone have any idea what the best type of burners are and which I should get?
Also, what are the USB, Ethernet, /dvi-D S/PDIF inputs for on the back of the Moxie box? There is also a "smart card" - can I use this somehow?
Basically, I just want to burn DVD's of my recorded shows. Any help would be much appreciated it.
Thanks,
Spencer

I too am a bit puzzled about connecting a DVD recorder to my system. Right now I have the component out on my Moxi box connected directly to my TV (as my receiver lacks component inputs) and I have the fiber optic audio cable connected to my receiver.
So if the Moxi simultaneously outputs video on component and S-VID then I should be able to connect the S-VID output on the Moxi to the S-VID input on the DVD recorder along with an Audio R-L cable for the audio outputs...right?
My question is, when I enabled the fiber optic cable I had to go to the settings in the Moxi menu to activate it. Using this setup it seems like with the DVD recorder I'd be able to record video but not audio.
Thoughts?
SoftDad 03-14-07, 11:52 AM I'm running an Adelphia Moxi (now Time Warner), and I just tried this. When the Moxi is tuned to an SD channel the composite output works fine to a good old standard TV (and presumably to a DVDR). But guess what, when the box in on an HD channel (or playing HD recorded material), the composite is quiet, or at least my good old standard TV won't play it. I notice that the SW on the Moxi has been "upgraded" since Time Warner took over. Somehow I suspect they've smartened it up to not put out the SD signal when HD is active.
Now I haven't tried the S-video and I haven't tried a DVDR, but I've tried enough to convince myself not to buy one. If anybody has further info on either of these I'd be interested.
Just a question - it sure seems like there'd be a market (like me) for a box that takes HD signal and compresses it onto a DVD (even if it has to a hard disk for intermediate processing). The resolution ought to be about like a movie on DVD, which is just fine. I suspect I could do it with my computer and a fancy video board, but that's clunky. Anybody have speculation on why such a box doesn't seem to exist? Yeah, yeah, the media moguls are blocking it - not convinced.
