Thanks thalazy,

When you say buy color filters what are those and how much do they cost? Also, when you say "is the bowing going to bother me for the rest of the time I own the tv" does that mean the Avia won't fix that? Thanks in advance for your help.

No Problem.
I believe the filter's are no more than $3 per color, I found a site inline that sells them. http://www.videoessentials.com/extra_filters.php. It depends some have fixed the bowing and other's lessened it slightly, I guess it depends on your tv and how bad the bowing is.

Mine the text is a little tilted and blury ppl face has a small blur to them too...Im thinking of selling this tv a guy will give me 500.00 for it just look into something thats HDTV with HDMI and maybe 16.9 not this 4.3 prob like a 30". Will Avia disk fix this text tilt and blur text kind of look like they in Intalics or something....Im not a big fan of this model I hear Sammy has some issues with making a clear picture....I dont want to spend over 800.00 so any opinions on a good picture quality.....I think CRT be best since i do some gaming.

Hello. I have an old school TXN3071WHF, many of the same issues. Has someone also had this set and are able to compare to this new one? I'm looking to get this set if the picture quality overall is improved. Also, what is the contrast ratio of this set?

When I was at the shop, I asked what model of tv they had in the most. She said mine (3082W) and it was a Wednesday and they already had 6 of them in for mostly the same issues. Looking around, 9 out of the 12 televisions in the lobby were Samsung models.

I'm sure it's true, but that's difficult to believe.

And maybe it's just the stats....maybe Samsung sells more televisions than the other brands you saw there.

Hey all...
Ive had this tv for about 2 months now and Ive got no major complaints on it. I gotten used to some of the little "quirks" to it and have just about gotten it callibrated to my liking but I have a question that has been on my mind for sometime. I use my TV for 2 things, DVD's and Gaming. Thats it, no TV...When I play my 360 on it, it looks great, clear picture, great colors, etc. But when I watch DVD's, the picture seems to be "blurry". When I say blurry, I mean no clear distinction of the picture...and it bugs me. When I used to watch DVD's on my old 27" Mitsobishi, the picture looked incredible. I think I have an idea as to why this is, is it because watching DVD's on my old tv, the tv was Full Screen and compressed the Widescreen Picture down, thus adding more detail to the pic and now that I have a widescreen tv, it is much bigger and therefore looks blurrier...or does it have to do with the display of 480p and the tv is trying to upconvert it to make it look better on the tv. Any help would be wonderful...DVD's are my life and I will do what I can to fix my problem...Thanks in advance and I apologize for the long thread.

Ianscloset,

How do you watch DVDs, with the 360 or another player? If they are separate devices, have you calibrated the tv and the dvd player together?

You need the color filters for calibrating color and hue.

I thought it was Contrast that they lower to prolong the tube's lifespan.
Correct.

Most tube sets come from the factory in "torch" mode, with Contrast set way too high. On Samsung sets the setting to avoid is called Dynamic, which just happens to be the default setting so it'll look good on showroom floors. The first and best thing one can do for a tube tv is to set it to a custom or pro mode, and set contrast no higher than 65% for the first 100 hours. You can set brightness as high as you like since it cannot reduce the lifetime of the phosphor as high Contrast can.

Can anyone post their experiences in using the 3082 with DVD upscaling to 720p and 1080i modes? I'm considering the set coupled with a Sony upscaling DVD unit.

I assume I will need to use the HDMI connection for this. FYI, my surround system is a Denon AVR-1905 with no HDMI support (component yes) so I will connect directly to the set from the DVD and send full surround to the AVR via optical cable.

Thx,
-Bob
You might consider going with a Samsung upscaling dvd player to match the tv. I've read where this can make for an easier user interface, and both Sony and Samsung make decent players. For some Samsung upscaling dvd players there's a hack to make them upscale using component cables.

I use a JVC Progressive Player for DVD's, and the 360 for games, both are hooked up with Component Cables. I callibrated the tv with the DVE disc and then just put my settings for every source...The color, the Tint and the Brightnes/contrast look great, but the picture just doesnt seem "clear". Its lame, Im getting used to it but I would just like it to work out in the end. Im having my friend bring over his Sony HDMI player later to see how that looks, I was just thinking maybe a better player that upconverts would possibly help... I also have both my DVD player and 360 are running through my reciever, and then that is plugged into the tv by a Component Cable...Do you think that takes away some of the quality, and just hooking my player directly to tthe tv will help??? Thanks again.

You used this same DVD player on an older SD set, correct? And it looked good?

Were you using a receiver as part of your set-up then also?

Try disconnecting everything from the tv. Connect the dvd player with the component cables you are already using. Make sure the dvd player is set to output 16:9 and Progressive scan. Check for picture quality. If this doesn't help, switch cables and use the component cables from your xbox set-up and try those.

You might see better picture quality using your buddie's upscaling player, but it probably wouldn't be as a result of the upconversion or the HDMI interface. Most of these upconverting players have better video processors than our tvs do, and they tend to deliver a cleaner picture. If your buddie's player shows a dramatically better picture, it may be time for you to upgrade to a better dvd player.

Partially.

Many have reported good results with Avia or DVE and "bowing." But I don't know of anyone that's gotten it perfect. That's simply not possible with an analog device. If you are looking for perfection you are probably better off with a fixed-pixel display where geometry is not an issue.

I'll just list these to make the simple to answer, at least I hope so.

1. I have a Gamecube connected through RCA cables, Xbox through component cables, and cable box through component cables. I also have a surround sound system connected through optical cable to the TVs optical out. Here is the problem/question:

Why does the Gamecube play sounds through the sound system and the xbox and cable box not? How can I make the xbox and cable box play sounds through my sound system?

2. I'm not exactly sure what guassing(sp?) is. The TV flashes after its been on for a few minutes. I does this flash several times over the course of a few minutes then stops for the rest of the day. Flashing is not really the best way to describe it. It is more of a fade in picture to black then the picture returns but it pinkish for a second before resuming normal colors and play. For the question:

Does anyone know what this is or a solution to this problem?

3. Geometry. Do I need to say more? Will an Avia dvd really help? I'm about to restart the netflix queue and this dvd will be at the top of the list if it is that good.

4. Should I just return this hunk before my 30 days is up at Circuit City. I feel like I got stooped. I bought the floor model thinking I was lucky for finding a deal. I had done research and knew about some of the problems for this model but I was taking a chance and I'm pretty sure I got bit on the ass.

LCD and DLP sets are fixed-pixel displays, along with LCOS, DILA and Plasma. These are more expensive than crt based sets, but prices are dropping all the time.

Each display technology has its own strengths and weaknesses. You might choose one of these sets for better geometry, but end-up with other problems like LCDs screen-door-effect or DLPs rainbow effect. None of them are perfect.

CRT based sets are still the "standard" when it comes to PQ. Even though most geometry issues can be made somewhat better, it'll never be "spot-on" because it's an analog device. But you'll find no other technology with better black levels, which is critical to overall picture fidelity.

If one gets a new CRT set and geometry is off significantly, then a service call should be placed so the set can be adjusted under warranty. You have a right to a good picture, within reason. But perfect geometry is an unresonable expectation with CRT sets.

These geometry problems, once made a bit better, usually don't show up under normal viewing conditions. They can usually be spotted when straight lines are critical, like with game windows and menus and such. My geometry is a bit off near the center of the screen but I hardly ever notice it, and I've gotten it "good enough."

If your geometry requirements are really rigorous, take a look at LCD direct view sets. You can get good ones now in the 32" range for well under $2,000.

I've pretty much narrowed my selections down to either the Sammy 3082 or the Sony xbr970, coupled with the OPPO 971. Before pulling the trigger on which display, I thought I would get opinions on the choice between the Sony and the Sammy....here are a few facts on my usage....

1) I don't own an xbox and don't plan to get one as I play games on my sweet 2.6 GHz dual core box with a Samsung 214T 22" LCD.

2) The setup will be used primarily for upscaling DVD's and off the air HDTV.

3) The HT AVR is a Denon 1905 (refurb) with 4 Polk RM2000's, a Bose center and Polk powered sub. Sound from the DVD is via optical cable to the AVR. Will feed the TV via the DVI to HDMI from the OPPO. Secondary feeds will come from the component outputs on the AVR to the TV.

I realize the Sony has one HDMI input and does not have the super fine pitch tube the xbr960 had. I also know the Sammy is cheaper, but can suffer from geometry issues.

Comments and suggestions are very much appreciated in advance.

Hello,

I am hunting through the service menu mode in trying to fix some annoyances about my TV. I resolved the overscan problem using V Shift/Amplitude & H Shift/Amplitude. This did create a weird "glow" to the left side that I covered up using CX Left Black.

I'm looking to resolve the blurriness on the left and right edges of the tube however. Could someone point me to which service options should be tweaked for this? (there are so many - and I haven't a faintest what >90% of them do :))

The "bluriness" is a focus issue inherent in all flat screen crt displays - some worse than others. This is compounded in widescreen crts, and even more so in the new slim type widescreen sets.

In the older rounded crt screens, every part of the screen was equidistant from the crt element scanning the backside of the tube (the phosphors). With the advent of flat screens, the center became the closest point and the further out to the sides the further it was from this scanning element. Add to the mix a widescreen crt set, and the sides become even further away from the central focal point of the screen. Now chop off one-third of the neck of the tube and the sides are even further away.

This results in what you're seeing - the center has wonderful focus, while the edges seem less focused and the "pixels" even appear bigger and further apart from one another. This leaves us with a decision - where do we want the most focused part of the screen to be? Regardless of the choice, there will be significant portions of the screen with this focus challenge.

In short - there's little to nothing you can do about it, even in the SM.

Justsc - I appreciate your input. Literally dozens of questions that I've come up with, and either searched for or posted-, 11 times out of 12, you have the most useful and consise answer. Glad to see you on the forums.

I'm using my TV for a mythtv (HTPC type box running linux and an open source PVR software), so focus is proving to be more important. This isn't troublesome at all during video playback, but during menu usage and when the OSD is on, its very difficult to make sense of the edges. I'm going to consider moving to the xbr970 , or even considering the xbr's price point (~1100), I might just be better off looking at another technology that has a fixed number of pixels arranged in a grid rather then a CRT.

Thanks for the kind words.

If focus is critical I agree that the 970 or a 960 would be better. I've got the 34HS420, the presursor to the 970, and I see none of the "bluriness" that I see on my Samsung set.

Right now its set at 45, but I feel the pic is a bit "dark" and would like a bit more luminance. I am really curious as to setting it higher for my 360, maybe up to about 55-65 or so. Thanks again!

Now would be the right time to experiment. You are to be congratulated for giving your set a nice break-in period before making major adjustments. Almost all new crt sets "settle in" over the first hundred viewing hours or so and things can change significantly during this period. Those who calibrate too soon can easily become discouraged as they may not see any consistency in the image early on. And lots of color and focus (clarity) issues can tend to right themselves during this period.

I don't recall if you purchased a calibration like Avia or DVE. If not, the next order of business would be to get one of those and properly calibrate your set. The folks that put out these discs really know what they're doing and have delivered excellent products. Avia includes a guide and is easier to follow. DVE expects a certain level of experience. However, DVE is more 16:9 oriented.

This is critical for long-term viewing pleasure. Most folks starting out with calibration are unfamiliar with the background and workings of white level and black level. Many are surprised to learn that the Brightness setting is actually an adjustment of the Black Level. Contrast is the adjustment for White Level.

Adding luminance is actually done with Contrast which adjusts only the white level. But both white level and black level are interdependent. You have to go back and forth until a good balance is struck. Adjusting for color and hue also affect "luminance" and are critical to overall image fidelity.

Once you've got your set calibrated according to the disc then it's time to adjust to taste, as in your question.

Cheers!

hey justjc,

i just bought my 3082 and im wondering if I should lower the contrast right off the bat until after i break the tv in or do I leave it at default until after breakin period. Also, everytime i turn the tv on it automatically sets to "dynamic" mode which according to this forum is not very good for the tv. Can i set it so that standard mode is used automatically. - Is standard mode even ok as far as prolonging the tv's life?

Thanks,

Matt,

Great question.

It's absolutely the right thing to do to move away from Dynamic and set it to something like Custom, for now. Out of the factory, all these sets are in torch mode. The manufacturers set them up this way to look good on a brightly lit showroom floor. But that's no good for the tv because over time that level of Contrast will shorten the life of the tv's phosphors.

Go into the user menu from the remote and set the picture mode to Custom. That will automatically bring the Contrast level down some. I recommend that Contrast not be set any higher than 50-60% during the first 100 hours of viewing. Kind of like with new cars and not running them too hard until they're broken in.

But feel free to adjust any of the other values like Brightness, Color and Sharpness to whatever looks best. In Custom mode the picture may seem a bit dark, so turn up the Brightness a bit to compensate. The only setting that can affect your tube physically is Contrast.

During this break-in period make sure to order a calibration dvd like Avia or DVE. I believe all HD sets should be sold with a copy of one of these discs. When the break-in period is finished you'll be ready to calibrate your set to NTSC standards.

Cheers!

I think the Sony is the much better choice. Even without SFP it's still a good looking tv, I was looking at it at a Sears a few weeks ago. The Samsung has too many issues when it comes to geometry and bowing. I had two 3082's and both were eyesores when it came to that. I could not accept that and it was constantly bothering me. I ended up getting the KD-30XS955 and don't regret it one bit. The 1 hdmi is fine and if you should happen to need more you can always buy an adapter than can turn one hdmi output into several. I will say that Sammy issue vary by tv and some are worse than other's. Make sure you check both out and see which one impresses you most. I will say besides the geometry issues the Sammy has a nice pic, but the Sony is only slightly better in that department.

I have been checking out this message board for a couple of days now and have decided on purchasing a Sammy 82 at CC with a 10% off coupon that I recently acquired. I plan on using the set for digital cable viewing and watching DVDs mostly with a little PS2 in there as well. As far as component cables are concerned can someone explain to me the difference between S-video and HDMI cables as well as what cables they recommend for hooking up a dvd player, PS2, and a cable box. This question may be a little foolish, but there is a lot of talk about component cables and I'm still slightly confused. So one set me straight. Thanks

justsc

S-Video is a low bandwidth cable while HDMI is the highest next to FireWire. HDMI also carries 5.1 surround audio along with the digital video signal. Component falls in between.

And HD signal requires at least component cables and can also be carried by DVI, HDMI and FireWire. If you want a Progressive Scan signal out of your dvd player (and you do with an HD set), then component cables are required.

I have a very similar set-up. For the cable box I use component cables. For the PS2 I also use component cables, but composite cables also work - depends on the level of fidelity you require. Since my dvd player is an Oppo with upconversion I use a DVI-HDMI cable.

Many of the newer digital cable boxes employ DVI or HDMI (digital) interfaces, but most of us have found no picture quality improvement using a digital cable so I stick with component and try to save my digital input for those devices requiring such.

Component cables are analog cables, as in those for use with DVD Players. Even though they are not digital they deliver outstanding picture quality for analog, digital SD and HD material.

I haven't looked into Monoprice cables but I suspect they're appropriate for use with your HD set and associated peripheral devices.

Let's just be sure we're on the same page.

Component cables are required for Progressive Scan output to your new HD set, which you DO want. There are three elements to a component cable, colored red, green and blue. These are for video only. You'll still need audio cables, either digital or analog.

Composite cables have three elements as well. There's one yellow colored lead that is for video, and three others for "right" and "left" stereo audio. You only want to use these cables for low res stuff like VHS.

Cheers!

I hooked this TV up this weekend. No major issues. The screen is straight all across, no bends or anything. The picture quality is stunning. The only issue was a little tilt which was easily fixed with the tilt menu. The manufacture date of this set was june 2006. I have the TV hooked up to a philips dvp 5960 upconverting DVD player via HDMI and it looks awesome. I hope my post helps get rid of any doubts some had about this TV

I have the TV hooked up to a philips dvp 5960 upconverting DVD player via HDMI and it looks awesome. I hope my post helps get rid of any doubts some had about this TV
Welcome to AVS! ;)

These kind of posts are critical. On forums like this one it's usually only enthusiasts or folks with problems posting. That can tend to give a skewed picture of the relative success of any given television models.

Oh Okay. So then when using component cables can you still use a composite cable just for audio? And if not what type of audio cables would you need say for a dvd player. Sorry for all the questions.

For audio you could just use one rca cable for the left channel and one for the right channel. Or just use the two audio cables from a composite cable and leave the video lead hanging off.

If you are using a receiver and surround sound speakers then I highly recommend using digital cables for audio to get the full 5.1 channels of surround sound. I use an optical cable between my Oppo DVD Player and my receiver.

I need some help... i have the 3082 and i really love it. However, whenever ther is a solid line on the bottom of the screen (ie. tv guide, video game, or widescreen dvd) i can notice a slight bowing of the bottom lines. I haven't purchased my AVIA disc but I have played around in the service menu trying to eyeball it with no luck whatsoever. Everything else is great about the tv i havent noticed anything else. Here is my question... i about two weeks left in the timeframe CC gave me to return the set free of charge. Should i return it and take my chances w/ a new one? I will def try and fix it with the avia disc (but i'm not very hopeful) before i make my decision. I really like this tv and when watching something that takes up the whole screen i can't notice anything. Does that sound like a minor bowing issue that i should keep or does it sound like something i should return.

I have another question regarding this tv (and any tv really)... I notice that in dark scenes in movies or games, and there is something white in the picture (Ex: Playing Doom 3, dark room and you are using your flashlight), there is a flaring of the object when the is movement.... I think it is called ghosting?... The object moves and you can see its trail... How do I fix this problem??? Im assuming its something with the settings like contrast/ brightness but it can get very frustrating while watching a movie... Thanks again.

From your description it sounds minor. If most everything else is good, I recommend sticking with this set rather than exchanging for another and possibly inheriting worse problems. My set has a minor bowing and I chose to get used to it (after attempts with Avia didn't totally fix it).

The Background Info:
I have had this set for two months; a DVD player is hooked up to HDMI 2 and a Motorola HD set top box to HDMI 1. It was calibrated when I bought it and once again after 100 hour break in. I have even refined the screen geometry via the service menu.

The issue:
Of course you have all seen how the set generates a solid blue background when no signal is being fed to it. About three weeks ago my wife noticed that there was a small magenta blob in the upper left corner (very noticeable against the solid blue field). Depending on when we turn the set on, it varies in size (some times it is large, other times a few pixels), and tends to get smaller the longer the TV is on. Sometimes it is not visible at all against the blue field.

When playing back a moving DVD/Cable image (i.e. not the blue field), it is hardly noticeable - the few effected pixels look a hair darker, and, after it "warms up," it is a non-issue.

Now there is nothing generating a magnetic field that would interfere with the tube, and I have shifted the TV to verify this... I figured that would be the most likely culprit.

Is this in any way normal? Has anyone else noticed this? Will it work itself out or get worse? Is this the mark of a defective set?

Thank you all for your help with this!

Right now, my currents settings are, after being calibrated with DVE...
Contrast - 45
Brightness - 55
Sharpness - 10
Color - 42
Tint - 44/56

Ive tinkered a bit with the settings, mostly with the color/tint and thats what ive got it too now. On my Xbox360 settings, I have the same numbers except color is 40 and tint is 45/55...
Its just annoying when watching a scene in a movie and its dark and all I see is various objects and trails from things. Thanks

This is good information.

You didn't mention the picture mode you are using (e.g. Custom, Dynamic...). That would be good info as well.

In an earlier post you mentioned having Contrast at 45, and wondered if it would be OK to raise the vaule now that the tv had completed its 100 hour break-in period. But I notice it's still at 45. I'm curious, did you notice the ghosting before calibrating with DVE?

I must admit, your settings are almost "spot on" with mine. It's kind of surprising actually since all sets are a bit unique. I don't see any reason to blame any of your settings definitively. The picture mode may make a difference, as each has unique settings in the SM. Some have higher SVM values (edge enhancement) and so on. You might experiment by trying another picture mode (other than Dynamic). Use DVE to calibrate your selected alternate picture mode and see what happens. If this produces no useful results you might consider lowering the VM LEVEL (SVM edge enhancement) in the SM. It's been awhile since I've been into my Samsung's SM, but I believe the VM LEVEL values run from either three to zero, or two to zero. The higher the value the more edge enhancement being applied. Record the default value and then adjust it to a lower value. If that doesn't help, set it at zero and try again. If that still doesn't help, return the VM LEVEL to its default value and blow the damn thing up. Not really!

Other than messing with VM LEVEL you might try reducing the Color setting by increments of one or two and see if that helps.

One thing intrigues me - the values for Tint are different from anything I've ever seen. I'm accustomed to seeing settings like 49/51 or 52/48, but I've never seen settings like yours. What happens if you set Tint to be closer to 50/50? Have you attempted any SM adjustments for Red or Green push?

Think about and try whatever sounds reasonable and let me know your results.

Cheers!

Hi All,

Thanks for all the great information. I just recenlty got a Samsung TXS-3082WH. Not sure if the "H" on the end makes any difference. So I have taken it off Dynamic picture mode and drop down the contrast while the set breaks in.

1- question is that when i first turn the set on, it makes a fairly loud buzzing sound. Like it is powering up. It just last for a sec or two. Has anybody else noticed this? Should I be worried?

thanks for any response

Whoa!

I sure hope you don't intend to have any (more) kids! :p

Just kidding. I suspect this is the usual sound resulting from the auto degaussing every time the set is powered on. Is the sound like a melody, or more electromechanical?

If it's like a melody, Samsung has just such a sound. Used to be one could only turn it off in the service menu. Unless I'm mistaken, it can now be turned-off in the user menu.

If it's more electromechanical then it's just the degaussing circuit doing its thing.

No Worries (with fingers crossed behind his back) ;)

Thanks for the reply justsc,
It definitely more of the electromechanical area.
It has that little melody as well, I am pretty sure I saw where you can turn it off.

So I'll cross my fingers on the "degaussing circuit doing its thing"

Hi there,

I just bought a Samsung TXS-3082WH a couple of weeks ago and have been very happy with it. When I found out about the Service Menu I was ecstatic. I have followed a few walkthroughs here and there and have generally achieved a much more amazing picture with less overscanning and better colors. During my exploits, however, I noticed something weird. I shrunk the horizontal and vertical amplification to the minimum so that I could center the picture and I noticed two things. First of all the geometry on my picture was all sorts of wonky, but after much massaging I think I have happened upon something fairly acceptable (though I'd still appreciate some help on it). But secondly, and more worrisome, I noticed that the entire left border line of the image is this thick blurry bright line. After I had increase the size of the image to fill the screen, I noticed that this line bows in toward the center of the screen but was much less affected by the H Parabolic setting or the Bowing setting, so much so that to get it straight ment the entire rest of the screen was incorrectly aligned. I have increased the H Amp to such a point that most content is on the screen and you can't really see the bar, but I was wondering if this is something that can ever be fixed, or just even what it is.

Also, has anyone used the built-in test patterns to align their sets? Is it a lost cause or has anyone been successful?

Thanks in advance for any help

Sam

PS. I have already heard from people in another thread who seem to think I am meaning that this was a result of messing with the SM. I will repeat that it was a pre-existing condition, but that I did not notice it until I shrunk the screen. The reason for this was because the factory setting were giving some pretty severe overscan so about 4-5% of the picture on either side was not displayed.

They may have meant that by reducing overscan you "revealed" the problem, which is essentially true. But it may not be a problem, if it wasn't meant to be viewed in the first place. On most sets, overscan of 5% is the goal. But many find thay can't reach this goal w/o introducing anomalies as you've seen. Some have to settle for upwards of 7-10% overscan. I recommend adjusting for an overscan just enough so that this artifact is off screen. As you have found, trying to mitigate this anomaly causes unacceptable problems elsewhere on the screen.

I can see how that would be true, but do you have any idea what this might be? Here's why I think this is odd: When I got my television, and fired up my Xbox 360 on it, I noticed that the things like the HUD in Oblivion was off the screen and sometimes text got cut off on the bottom. Obviously this is an overscan issue, so I know I was not mistaken in performing my overscan correction. Now I'll admit I don't know much about TV CRTs, so this could be something normal, but I guess my question would be if this sort of this is common, and is it something that can ever be dealt with?

Even though you may not understand crts well, you are still asking all the right questions. ;) I feel inadequate in trying to help you because I'm not there to see what you are seeing. Plus, I'm not a gamer.

There's a relative order to follow in making SM adjustments (after you've recorded all the default values). Picture information can be cut-off as a result of poor centering and/or overscan. If the picture position is off center (e.g. too low) then adjusting for overscan first can just make things worse. So, before adjusting for overscan you want to be sure the picture is centered properly. Sometimes manufacturers put a control for vertical position in the user menu, sometimes not. Adjustments for vertical and horizontal position can both be found in the SM. Once finished with that, then overscan can be properly adjusted.

But aside from all this, I don't know enough about video signals to tell you what exactly you are seeing (the problem) or what exactly causes it. I only know that at the outer edges of the picture there are elements that centering and overscan account for and hide from what's actually viewed.

For more detail you might consider posting in the Display Calibration section of AVS. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Good Luck!

Well I finally aquired and hooked up my Samsung 82 yesterday and I am happy to report that everything looks great. No major issues whatsoever. The sound and the picture quality are all top notch.

On a side note while using component cables I purchased from Monoprice to hook up my old Samsung DVD player I discovered that one of the component ports on the player was messed up leading to the picture being tinted a dark red color that could not be fixed with the picture settings. I switched dvd players and the problem went away. I did notice, however, that while the screen was red from the faultly dvd player you could see a decent sized purple blob in the top right hand corner of the screen. I remember reading about other people posting about something similar on their sets. The blob is not noticable though when the color settings are set normally and the components hooked up are fully functioning. Hopefully "the blob" will not grow or change color to affect the picture during normal watching. Anyway thanks for all the help from the people that have posted their trials and tribulations on this board. It was very helpful.

Congrats on the new set!

The blob may just go away during the set's settling in period. If you begin to notice it during normal viewing post back here.

Be sure to take the set off of the Dynamic picture mode (which may reduce or eliminate the blob). Set it to Custom. Make sure to set Contrast to no more than around 65% during the first 100 viewing hours. While waiting for the break-in period to complete (100 viewing hours) purchase a copy of a calibration dvd (Avia, DVE or Home Theater Tuneup). You can give your set a proper calibration when the 100 hours are past.

Enjoy!

Before troubleshooting you need to properly calibrate your set. Get Avia or DVE and calibrate Contrast, Brightness, Color, Hue, Sharpness and Color Temperature as guided by the dvd. Once calibrated to NTSC standards then we can talk about color and luminance problems.

That's good news.

I see you are setting "tint" to 58. Are you referring to "Color" or "Tint?" Tint usually has two numbers, like 48/52, reflecting the balance between green and red.

If your Color setting is 58, that's awfully high, IMO. Also, if your Tint values are off by much from 50/50 then that could be a problem too. I'd try adjusting Color closer to 50 and Tint closer to 50/50.

What was your source when you calibrated? A regular dvd player, an upconverting player, and which inputs do you use, component, SVideo or HDMI?

Thanks for the info.

When you see the color problem (rainbow) does green seem to dominate?

I still recommend Color closer to 50, and Tint closer to 50/50.

Brightness could be a little higher (closer to 55-60).

Which Picture Mode do you use? (e.g. Vivid, Custom, Movie, etc).

That confirms what I wrote in my last note.

Your settings for Tint need to be 50/50 or very close to that. Also try my other recommendations for Color, Contrast and Brightness.

Since you have Avia, the best approach would be to re-calibrate.

If it gives you the same results as the last time you calibrated, just go with the settings I'm recommending. If you still have the rainbow effect, drop Color and Contrast a little bit until it goes away. If that makes the picture too bad to watch then you should call a service technician (Samsung or your reseller).

After another review of your settings I'd like to modify my recommendation.

Earlier I had written that you should set Tint at 50/50, Color close to 50, and begin lowering Color and Contrast until the rainbow effect got better.

I'd like to alter my recommendation a bit.

After thinking about it, I now recommend setting Color at 39, with Tint at 50/50, Contrast at 45 and Brightness at 55. This would make your baseline as follows:

Picture Mode = Custom
Contrast = 45
Brightness = 55
Color = 39
Tint = 50/50
Sharpness = 10
Color Temp = Normal or Neutral

In order to reduce the rainbow effect I recommend lowering both Contrast and Color 3-4 points at a time. After each reduction take a look and see how much the rainbow effect has been affected. Be sure to spend at least an hour watching the tv between changes to give yourself enough time to really compare the new settings against the previous ones. Keep doing this until the rainbow effect begins to get better, and to a point where it's acceptable to you. If you have to lower Contrast and Color so far that the picture begins to get too dark, raise Brightness some.

Please let me know how it goes. ;)

I'm really glad you re-calibrated. ;) It takes a number of tries to get good at doing this. Each time you learn more and more about how the tv reacts to changes and you get better at nailing the settings.

Please stick with the settings you got with this most recent calibration. These are much better than anything I might recommend. My recommendations were based on my experience with my Samsung set and Avia, but each crt is different and your best settings will come from your own calibration(s).

If you choose to try any of my settings, do only one at a time. And give it at least a few hours of viewing before trying another value. If what you see isn't obviously better, go back to your numbers.

It's hard to evaluate the impact of this rainbow effect without seeing it myself. Is there any way you could post an image of your screen? That would be very helpful. Is it a major problem? I really don't know. Actually, rainbow effects are more common to DLP displays. Since you are beyond your 30 day return window, any service would be warranty service through Samsung or your reseller. If the problem is hard to see, repair techs will probably tell you it's within spec. If it's totally obvious you have a better chance of getting them to act on it. Try to post a picture if you can.

Cheers!

However back in june i had a tech from cc came to look at the set to fix the rain bow problem , he looked at the picture and said he notice a slight rainbow effect, he suggest it could be an interferance from the HT speakers, or the connection port.We tried moving the speaker and changing the connection to a different component port but this did not solve the problem. All the tech keep saying "you have great pictures"but he did know the cause or solution to the problem. I was wondering if someone could post their factory settings for me? I realize that they might be different, but I would guess they can not be that far off. Thank you in advance.Hi Prof. the custom factory settings for the Txs3082 are
Contrast 80
brightness 50 sharpness=50

color 50
tint 50/50

color cool1
Also you can go into the picture menu and you can hit Reset and you will get back factory settings.

Thanks for the help, but I ment to say I that I needed the deflection settings from the service menu. I should have been more clear. Thanks for providing that information though. :)

Also, please do not yell at me about not writting them down before messing with the settings. I know I read all of the warnings. Sadly though my wife did not and she just thought it was just another piece of scrape paper. Any help would be greatly appericated.

I remember reading an old post where someone tried to use someone elses factory settings on their tv and it didn't turn out very well. Let us know what happens.

Hi everyone. I'm new here but was reading this thread for a while.

Anyways, I used to have the Samsung TX-P2670WH but just upgraded to the TX-S3082H.

I'm loving the bigger screen size, small and sleek black cabinet size, and dual HDMI ports. But unfortunately my set has HORRIBLE geomeotry issues. The network logos on the corner of screen (like FOX, etc) get cut off pretty badly. It also cuts off when I'm playing my Xbox 360.

I tried fixing it with the Service Menu but the geomeotry problems are so bad, I can't get a good balance on it. If I called Samsung customer support, will they fix my TV for free or will I have to pay. Heck, will they even offer to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Hi guys. I just ordered this tv last night from Amazon. It says it's coming Wed or Thurs. I mainly bought it for my xbox 360. I'm tired of playing it on my 19inch monitor via VGA for HD. :P I already have the component cables for the system. What I'm wondering is once it's hooked up what resolution do I pick in the 360's options for this tv?

Using the Xbox 360 on 1080i and 720p look pretty much the same to me on this TV. But I left it on 720p.

I'd like to thank everyone here for the excellent information. I recently purchased this TV and have a quick question.

I tried to hook up my computer via s-video, but the only resolutions I could choose were 4:3, even though the TV was in 16:9. Does this have to do with the s-video? I don't have a DVI port on my video card, and since it's a laptop it's really going to be quite impossible to change that without buying a new computer. The closest resolution I could pick was 640x400.

On my parent's TV (an older Samsung DLP) I hook up my computer via VGA and can choose a 16:9 resolution.

Is there anyway I can upconvert the VGA to DVI and then from DVI to HDMI, I know it can be downconverted from DVI to VGA, so I'm assuming it can't be done. Or maybe even from VGA to Component?
edit: I found cables that could potentially work to convert from VGA to DVI to HDMI, however I don't know if this is really possible.

Could I also just be doing something wrong?

You are talking about HD right? Occupying the full screen? And you're within a 30 day return period?

If so, I would think Samsung should fix this. Call Samsung support and describe the problem just like you did here and emphasize that the station logo is almost foo the screen and they should respond.

Yeah, like when I'm watching FOX during primetime (that's when they broadcast shows in HD) but I see like half of the FOX logo on the right corner of the screen.

I purchased a samsung slimfit txs3082 back in May, 2006 from CC. After 2 weeks,
there was a loud high-pitched whining noise coming out from the TV. I though it was
just a defect TV, so I came back to CC to exchange for a new one. After another 3 weeks,
the same problems happened. By this time, I can't return the TV, so I contacted Samsung service center.
Samsung sent a technicican out to fix my TV, he changed the new board, but
the noise is even worse than the current one, so we decided to put back the old
board in. Now Samsung agreed to give me an exchange. The shipment came
about 4 weeks later, the delivery guy helped me to set it up, and guess what ?
the new TV didn't even power up so I had to refused the shipment. Samsung
customer service said that they would keep exchanging me the new TV until it
worked. Now I'm back to waiting for another TV, I don't know if I ever get a TV
that works but for now I have a TV with annoying high pitched noise, I had to
take time off from work several times (and maybe more) for the repair and delivery
to come. This TV becomes very expensive and not even good enough. I
wonder why no-one in this forum reported the high pitched noise of this TV yet.
For those who consider buying this model, think again? you have been warned.

Considering all the difficulties you've been through thus far:
Barring ethics and morality, there is always the possibility of purchasing another and returning this one in it's box. Not many shops scan both the UPC and serial.

This is a very unfortunate problem but not specific to Samsung or to this model. I've read about some Sony models suffering this same problem. The only solution is usually cycling through sets until one gets a good one.

my first three sets gave me the same problem, the fourth one didn't even power up,

S-video doesn't support any higher resolutions, so that's why you can't choose anything above 720x480 or similar.

If I were in your shoes I'd feel the exact same way you do. When that kind of thing happens to me I usually never buy anything from that manufacturer again.

I really hope your next set is good. Isn't there some point in this process when you can demand a refund? I have to think there is, but I've never had to go as far down the path as you have.

Best of Luck! ;)

My tv finally came this mourning.. and wow it's heavy. So far I've only tried my xbox 360 on it using the component inputs. I changed it from dynamic down to normal for now, is normal safe for a few days until I can run avia?

Anyways, it's sitting on the floor because I can't lift it high enough on my own, rofl, it ways 20lbs more than I do. So far I've noticed a few problems with it. The picture thinks the screen is wider than it really is, it's cutting off probably half an inch or so on both sides, how do I fix this? The only option I found in the menu is tilt. The other thing is the left side of the picture looks lower than the right when theres a line on the bottom, I'll most likely just have to use that tilt option for this.

My last problem with the set. I'm used to playing my 360 on my 19" viewsonic pc lcd via VGA. On the lcd the words in game and on the systems dashboard were always a nice solid letter. On the tv though I noticed the words kinda blink a little bit, I dunno if blink is even the right word. I dunno if it's also from me sitting only 3 feet away from it, at the most.

Congrats on the new set!

Running in Normal is fine, Custom is even better as it more closely follows the NTSC standards. For the first 100 viewing hours try to keep Contrast at or below 55, the others you can adjust to taste. FWIW, try setting Brightness at around 60, Sharpness at 30 or below, Color at around 40 and Tint at around 50/50.

Avia is a great tool and it's good that you are getting it. I usually recommend folks wait until they've put in 100 viewing hours before calibrating the set. Being analog devices, the settings in these sets tend to drift over time, and as the set goes through its initial burn-in (a good burn-in) the sharpness and color tends to settle-in, making a calibration kind of useless. Try to have the set on as much as possible early on - in case there's any problems they usually show up during initial burn-in if the set is run alot. Just be sure the picture isn't static for long periods of time.

The problem with the picture width is probably overscan. You can adjust that when you do the system-wide calibration.

The text - you are seeing the difference between progressive scan (your lcd) and interlaced which is how this set scans the screen. The text will never looks as good as it did on the lcd display.

Ah, I can live with the blinky text. I also tried my 360 on my sd 25" tv and the blinking was really bad, which is why I've been using the 19inch monitor. It's not that bad at all on the Samsun though, nothing like it was on the 25" sdtv by sharp I have.

Now I just gotta fix the tilt, overscan and I think I have a geometry problem. I was playing geometry wars and noticed while the vert. bar on the right side was perfectly straight the one on the right side cuves inwards.. really bad, yet thats the only game I noticed it on. I gotta work 2-10 tonight, I'm gonna miss my tv. =[

K, I've had it for a day now and need to fix some of these problems tonight with this set. Could someone tell me what settings to mess around with in the service menu for these problems? First off, I noticed these problems are mainly just with component in when using my 360, my cable box picture is correctly placed on the screen using the rf in. Changing the screen placement in the sm while in component mode won't also mess with the rf mode will it? Otherwise then that mode will be smashed in too much.

So far the problems I remember off the top of my head is the tv overscans a decent amount on both sides of the set. Also theres some bowing or whatever curving of straights like is called. I noticed some of it on the left side with vert. lines and maybe some with horz. lines across the entire screen. I'll have to retest for the horz. lines though.

Well wow. I think my set might be horrible. I knew mine had overscan but I didn't realize how much until I went into the sm. I shrunk it down so the entire thing was on screen and noticed that both the left and right sides where stretched off the screen by a good 1.5 inches each, not only that, but the left side was really wavy once it got in site. I fixed the overscan fine but it creates a vert. blue line along the left side of the screen. It causes the picture to be a tiny bit blury, you can't see the line during tv or games, just blur along the area. But when the screen is black like while switcing sources the blue line is there. =[

I have not calibrated my tv but after tinkering with the settings for almost a month, I have come up with this:

Setting: Custom
Contrast: 58
Brightness: 55
Sharpness: 12
Color: 42
Tint: 51/49
Temp: Normal

My question is that I watch Nascar and the ticker is on the top of the screen and I would like to make the text a bit sharper. While playing with the menus it seems to be sharper when I switch to the default 'Standard' settings which is contrast being 80 and everything else is 50.

I am close but wanted to know if you fine people have any ideas.

Thank you! :)

You're doing very well!

Contrast - The clarity of text in the Standard picture may have nothing to do with the Contrast level (white level). But try an experiment before moving to other ideas. What happens if you try less Contrast? What happens to text clarity? If it improves, try using less.

Sharpness - What happens if you add more Sharpness? Try it and see. Sharpness is actually edge enhancement. A little more may bring more clarity to your text.

Service Menu (SM) - The Standard picture mode probably has more edge enhancement (Scan Velocity Modulation) than in Custom mode. At times, this can cause text to appear more clear. Try going back to Custom, then enter the SM and tinker with the VM LEVEL. If memory serves, the higher the value the more edge enhancement is being applied. If the setting is already at 2 or 3 (I can't recall whether the highest is two or three) then you cannot set it any higher. Just play with it and see if you can't get the text dialed-in a bit better. NOTE - As always, record the default value before making any adjustments. When done, turn the tv off to get out of the SM and turn it back on. NOTE: When returning from a trip to the SM, the tv will always be set back to the Dynamic picture mode, its default. So be sure to change it back to Custom before checking out your changes. This return to Dynamic may not be the only default the set returns to after using the SM. If memory serves, you may also have to return your audio settings to your preferences too.

Cheers! ;)

Are you using a calibration dvd to determine your level of overscan and to make your adjustments? This cannot be emphasized enough. A calibration dvd will put up a test pattern that will tell you your level of overscan in all directions and give you a guid by which to make adjustments. You don't want 0% oversccan. There are parts of the signal not intended to be seen, which you may well now be seeing. The goal is about 5% overscan. For some sets 10% is better. If you haven't already done so, get a calibration dvd and then see what you can do.

Cheers!

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere in this long thread, but I just bought this HDTV for my teenage kids, who use it mainly for PS2 gaming. Do I have to worry much about burn-in with the black bars on the sides? If so, would PS2 component cables result in 16:9 with many PS2 games? Thanks.

You only have to worry about burn-in if a stationary image is left on the screen for a very long time, or for decent amounts of time on a regular basis. So long as the image changes somewhat regularly and all parts of the screen are used somewhat regularly it should be ok.

I have a PS2 with the component cables on a 34" Sony widescreen set and it does go to widescreen with Gran turismo 4. I can't speak for other games. In fact, with GT4 it also does 1080i.

But that's the problem - the black bars will be there on the sides all the time with the PS2, unless their games support 16:9 with the component cables I just bought (I guess I'll take them out of the package to try them out). I use my 56" DLP in the family room for most HDTV viewing; the CRT is really just for the kids' gaming.

At first I thought I was in trouble since with the component cables, the games were still 4:3 with black bars. But then I looked into the PS2 menu, changed a setting to 16:9, and sure enough the games are widescreen. All's well that ends well.

This is good news.

When I answered your last wuestion I was unsure exactly how much time the set would be locked-into a 4:3 mode. Since it will be that way nearly all of the time I it's obviously best to take advantage of the 16:9 offered by the component interface.

I recently purchased a new computer and am wondering if their is any other way to connect it to my Samsung Slimfit other than using s-video (which looks blurry, displayed in 4:3, and overall ugly).

My computer has both VGA and DVI inputs/outputs but I am not sure what the best method of converting them would be since the Samsung doesn't support either, only HDMI and component (I do not want to use an input that does not display HD resolutions).

Does anyone have any suggestions?

You can buy both DVI/HDMI cables and DVI/HDMI adapters, either of which should do the trick.

The PS2 component cable purchase was definitely a good idea for me. Not only is PQ much better, but I get widescreen as well (no more worry about burn-in). That will hold my kids for a year, until the prices drop on the PS3.

Alright, I just picked up this 3082 about a month ago from bestbuy and am decently satisfied w/it. The only thing that is bugging the crap out of me would be the LAG! As someone mentioned before (on page 5-6 i think), I am experiencing audio/video lag on both my ps2 and my just-purchased sony up-convert dvd player. Before someone tells me to use the "highest quality cables", I already am. My ps2 is running on component monster cables while my sony upconvert dvd player is on an 'acoustic research' hdmi cable. I get lag when I play ps2 and watching dvds... SOMEONE PLZ HELP! I really didn't wanna spend all this money and have my dvd's/ps2 lag. Is there ANY setting that can affect this? Any ideas? I know it can't be my A/V cables since they're the best quality already.

BTW, when watching regular tv/cable, there is no apparent lag.

Thx for the help all.

I'm using my ps2 with Sony component cables and have no lag. I'm normally playing Guitar Hero almost every night in which timing is extremely important and it's the same as on my old sdtv.

update on my lag issues:

it turns out the sony dvd player is ok (for the most part). lag occurrs only when the dvd player is already playing a dvd WHILE I switch to the hdmi input. so as long as I have the input on hdmi BEFORE I turn the dvd player on, there is no lag. glad I found out what I was doing wrong and got it to work b/c I really love that sony player. anyone else experience this problem w/their dvd players?

I just got this set on 9/02 and I've been running it hard every day to get my ~100 hours in. I did some initial tweaking in the SM just to correct some very obvious overscanning problems.. I've been pretty happy so far, but I noticed the exact same issue. The vertical blue line along the left side of the screen.. It's just in the center 2/3rds of the screen, doesn't extend to the top or the bottom. I think I may have tried to eliminate too much overscan and will see if I can't fix that this weekend. I'm going to pick up an AVIA or DVE disk in the near future to do some proper calibrating.

So far I've just been eyeballing it and I know I'm not getting optimal results. I just wanted something that didn't look obviously distorted during the burn-in period. Were you able to eliminate this bar through proper claibration? It's quite annoying when things fade to black or when I switch to an input and haven't turned that device on. Very noticable and irks me quite a bit.

Other than that, my only other issue is the text blurriness on the left and right ~10% of the screen. I know this is a problem with CRTS, especially flat, widescreen and slim cabinet CRTs, but I was hopeful that this Sammy would perform without terrible focus problems on the edges. Which it does for the most part, except small white text on dark backgrounds. I can definitely tell there is a focus problem in these cases.. Especially in my gaming. I know it's been asked before, but there's no way to correct this? Not even with professional calibration?

I looked at the service manual for this model and saw some sections on adjusting the focus of the screen.. It's obviously nothing I'm going to do myself, as it requires getting inside the cabinet and tightening/loosening what look almost like screws in the figures. Would this possibly fix this issue? Or is my set as focused as its going to get with things clear in the center and fuzzier on the edges? I'm sure I can get used to it, but I don't want to go that route until I know I have to. :D

Thanks in advance for any help and feedback!

Don't give it another thought.

What if you do look hard enough to find it? What would that do to the great feeling of satisfaction you've been enjoying up until now? If it ain't broke don't fix it, and don't go looking for defects ;)

You got a great set - just enjoy! :)

I picked this set up a week and a half ago and love it. The first one had to go back due to the high pitched noise after about 2 hours. I exchanged it for a new one last week and not a problem since. Aside from the general contrast and color tweaks, I love it. This set fills my HD fix, as I am not a videophile or anything. LOVE IT!!!

I've been looking at this as a potential HD tv for my bedroom. I had a few questions (btw this forum has been VERY informative so far):

1. Will this look good at my view distance? I typically will not be more than 7 ft away. I know that if you get real close to these tvs that the picture doesnt' look as good, as was demonstrated to me at CC.

2. How good of a DVD player do I need to take advantage of the tv? Currently all I have is my PS2, which even with component cables I think would not produce that great of a picture. Will a standard DVD player with Progressive scan work?

3. How long do I have to wait to decide whether or not I have a good tv screen? What I mean is that people have talked about geometry issues and using SM to fix it, but people also say to not use SM adjustments until your tv "settles" for about 100 hours of viewing time. Are there any issues that should be resolved earlier rather than later? Honestly I don't use my tv a whole lot, so 100 hours will likely take at least a month (unless I go on a DVD viewing binge.) Basically what "issues" should be addressed immediately and what issues should be put off until the 100 hours?

4. I'm not paying for HD programming, so I'm looking at OTA antennas.. (as opposed to underground I suppose.) I would really prefer to NOT have to install an outdoor antenna, and I found the Terk HDTVa Amplified Directional Indoor UHF/VHF/HDTV Antenna (i'd link to it but I'm not allowed yet.)
Below is my distance information from AntennaWeb (1st number is degrees, 2nd is miles away.)

I'm with you Ikabob. My TV looks fantastic right out of the box. I didn't adjust any settings and I don't plan on it. I am very satisfied with the tv.

I have one question. To turn the tv on, I have to press the power button twice (it turns off with one press). Is this normal?

Yeah, that service manual is very similar to the one I was referring to (not surprisingly, as it's just an earlier model). The screws I mentioned are shown in the image on page 3-18 (section 3-6-1 Adjusting the Focus), but I don't know if they'd really be able to focus the set anymore than it already is as the problem is only on the edges and they would likely adjust the focus of the entire tube. I'm pretty sure my focus in the center is clear, but I really need to get something with lots of text or something on screen to confirm that there aren't any issues aside from the left and right edges. In any event, I'm still staying out of the inner workings of my TV. :D

There are some reference patterns in one of the sections of the Service Menu (possibly Options, or maybe one of the Video 1-6 sections.. Can't remember, and I'm at work and can't check), but I haven't been able to keep them on screen when I go to adjust any settings. They're probably there for confirming your calibration after the fact, unless I'm just missing the obvious and you are able to leave them on screen when you navigate to another area.

Yeah, now that I see how it's exactly done, I wouldn't want to mess with the focus, either. And now that the price has dropped on this set at CC, I think I'll go ahead and pick it up soon. The image qual looked really nice to me when I wasn't looking at the sides so much, and overall I don't think the blurry sides will bother me as much as I think they would. I just need something now until I can get a decent plasma for a good price, or until the next generation of tvs hit. If I wasn't a poor student I'd go for the best :D

Most of these sets have two focus screws, one for coarse adjustment and one for fine adjustments. But you don't want to do this independent of other adjustments in the SM. I highy recommend that everyone read KenTech's Sony Service Codes thread. Even though it's a different manufacturer, the principles are all the same. Ken describes steps and processes to take to get the best from our sets. He does include a section on focus and the internal adjustment screws.

A regular progressive scan player, using component cables, should be just fine. You'll love the results.

The 100 hours of viewing time is a guide. Some problems tend to resolve themselves in fairly short order. These are usually color purity issues. Geometry problems will not fix themselves and require adjustments. Try to run the set as much as possible and within a week to 10 days you should have a very good idea of the quality of your set.

Cheers!

OK, I've got a question that is really going to show how much of a noob I am, heh heh. How do you get OUT of the service menu? I kept hitting exit and all other kinds of stuff and the thing wouldn't go away. Finally I hit the reset button in the service menu and that turned the TV off and everything was set back to defaults, although I don't know if anything was saved that I was doing in the service menu. Apparently more has to be done than just adjusting the bow option. I could make one side of the screen look better but that would just make the other side totally whacked out. So I ended up leaving that the way it was set. It's very freaking easy to accidentally change a value on something when I didn't really mean to. I wanted to exit without saving but I couldn't figure out how to get the damned thing to go away and I don't know if hitting reset like I did saved anything or not.

I was looking at that 79 service manual .pdf someone posted. It says to display the Cross Hatch Pattern when adjusting for bowing but I don't see that anywhere. I did find some other patterns in the service menu and after looking at them I am convinced there is no freaking way I'm going to be able to fix this bowing. Some of the patterns were just of a few thick lines going down the screen and looking at those revealed bowing all over the place. It just amazes me that bowing of this magnitude actually makes it out the door of a factory. How in the hell can guys at Samsung see that and think it is an item worth shipping? This whole SlimFit obsession that Samsung has annoys me. I personally don't give a damn if the case is big and bulky, I just want a good picture at an affordable price. If going slim means having a picture bowing all over the place than Samsung should just stop pissing around with the design and make regular CRTs. At least give us a choice. If they were offering another CRT model with PQ this good but without the bowing and it had a huge case like regular CRTs I'd exchange this for it in a second.

Samsung is sending out a local TV guy to my place this Tuesday to try to fix the geometry. I really doubt though that he'll be able to do much with it or that he'll try very hard to. Have any of you guys had any luck with repair guys being able to fix this set's geometry issues?

Ok another question: There's 2 stations I get OTA where they react to weak signals differently. The Fox station has video drop outs.. while the CBS station has VERY bad audio.. like you hear it and you think your speakers have blown out and are scratchy. The kicker is that the CBS bad audio issue only happens when the audio is put out through my stereo. I can put on my tv speakers and the audio is fine, but obviously this is not my preferred method. Does anyone have any idea as to why this may happen on only this one station (so far) and also only happens when using my stereo for audio?

Ok.. I was having some geometry issues and I tried to adjust my tv using SM and Avia.. unfortunately I think I did more harm than good. I had all my default settings, but those weren't that great to begin with.. the tv seems to suffer from major bowing issues... where on the left and right sides teh picture isn't completely straight, and also bad on the top and bottom corners. Is this normal? The weird thing too is that this behavior isn't very consistent.. usually with good 16:9 pictures its pretty decent, but when stuff on the tv "shifts" it looks rather bad.. like an old-school tv where the image shape itself seems to adjust based on what is on the actual screen. This was quite an issue on the avia disc.. where when it was using the checkerboard and shuffling images around it would change quite a bit.. I know this sounds all very vague but I have a feeling that this may not be an isolated incident. Does this sound "curable" or do I need to call Samsung now?

Well, the service guy has come and gone and he wasn't able to do much of anything with the bowing. He said it is just the nature of the beast with this model and that no amount of adjusting in the service menu is going to get rid of it ( Which he did. But he more moved the curves from one place to another rather than get rid of them. ). So he is putting in what he called a "saw" to Samsung which means he saw the problem, he can't fix it, and that the customer remains unsatisfied. He said he's not sure what Samsung will do. He said they may offer my money back, may go through their factory and handpick me a replacement that they have checked to make sure there isn't any bowing on, or may even offer me a different TV altogether. Time will tell, he said I should hear from them within 2 weeks.

The interesting thing the guy said is that he gets called out all the time for geometry problems on Samsung SlimFits and Sony CRT HDTVs. The SlimFits didn't surprise me but Sony did. I didn't know that Sony CRT HDTVs were suppose to have high probability for geometry issues. Considering how huge the cases are on Sony CRT HDTVs I thought they'd be pretty good with geometry but according to this guy he gets lots of calls about them.

Sorry it took so long to reply. I use the internet once a week at the library. I posted my first reply in the official SonyXBR960 thread and then came back to this thread and said DAMN! Why so many replies? Then thought I might as well fully confess to my embarrassing horrifying mistake. This should be right up your ally if you like dark humor. Perfect for Halloween! The first thing I did is called up some glass companies to find out what chemical they suggested using to remove stuff like super glue etc. from glass and a lady told me that alot of the professianals use MEK or known a s Methyl Ethyl Ketone. I was standing their in the hardware store Home Depot and was trying to decide whether to buy Goof-Off or MEK because someone on this site suggested Goof-Off and the pros suggest MEK. Well I went with MEK. First of all the stuff is extremely strong smelling and toxic. I opened alll of the windows in my house, covered my mouth and nose with a sweater, put on rubber gloves and started applying it to my screen with a ruff cloth. I'll try to sum it the best I can because this is where it got kind of confusing. I started rubbing the MEK to the top right corner of my screen slightly larger that the width of your index finger and notice it wasnt coming off that well. I rubbed harder and then looked at the surface and noticed that my screen was etching. I had even tried out the MEK on my glass mirror to make sure it doesnt etch the glass and it worked fine. I then thought maybe MEK wasn't as strong as Goof-Off or something and it was just melting the antiglare coating and smearing it. Well I went out to buy the Goof-Off because I thought it would clean up my mistake. It did remove the coating very well and cleanly but it didn't fix my mistake. Oh well, Its not that noticeable I thought. I then thought maybe I can buff out the mistake with a buffing drill bit. I practiced on my mirror again and it worked fine. The drill bit was a cotton like material but closer to fiberglass by Dremmel if any of you are familiar. I started buffing and then all of a sudden a tiny chuck flew out about 3/8 inch wide. I said what the hell this is glass thats not supposed to happen. Anyways, after all was said and done I tried to figure out why a chunk of the surface flew out and why my glass got etched. I looked at the damage really hard and figured out that the surface underneath the spray paint like coating is very hard PLASTIC! thats why it scratched so easily when I vigorously rubbed MEK on it and why a chunk flew out when buffing. Oh well, its just a $1082 television. Thats right the price dropped. Anyways the damage is only noticible at the far veiwing angle when there is a white image on the screen Not that noticealble from the front viewing angle only if your looking for it. I would not suggest using MEK or a buffing drill bit on your screen but feel free to use Goof-Off or another product called Oops IF YOU DARE MWAH HA HA HA HA! No really they work fine. I would give a couple of tips though if you have to remove the anti glare coating. You can buy all of this stuff at Walmart. First, use protective eye glasses because the fumes from the Goof-Off are a little stronger that finger nail polish remover but not nearly as strong as MEK. Second, use some of those gloves used to apply chemicals. Third, cover your mouth and nose with a mask used for chemicals because this stuff is known to cause BrAiN DaMaGe if inhaled. Fourth, use a very soft cloth that is ONLY 100% cotton other wise you might be smearing whatever material is in the cloth onto your screen. Fourth, that spray paint like material comes of easier than you think rub softly in order not to scuff the screen. Just dont rub really hard. A little pressure with a soft cotton cloth will be fine. FIfth, try applying the chemical to a tiny corner of your screen first. Lastly, open the windows for good air circulation unless you want to fry brain cells. Also, you will have to find some way to protect plastic surrounding your screen because I accidently rubbed a little on the plastic and it quickly removed some of it. Try holding a wide metal paint scraper along the edge of the screen. I can't fully recommend doing this though because I didn't remove all of the coating. Another person on this site did though and he said that he couldn't get all of it off. Beleive me you'll definitely want to get it all off because if you leave any of it on it causes a rainbow like effect around the edges of the coating that is not removed. I would not recommend removing the coating because it is a must have since the screen is extremely reflective. I also noticed that the coating is mainly what gives the black its richness and the black is dull without it. Anyways just wanted to warn everyone.

Just bought this heavy SOB yesterday. Don't seem to have to bad of geometry problems, but I don't have a trained eye so...

Question though, PQ looks good with a Comcast regular receiver. We are going to get a HD receiver today. Does anyone know if it will be better picture, since we'll have the new receiver but not the HD programming? Also, anyone know what kind of inputs are on the Comcast HD receiver. Meaning, do I need a component or hdmi cable?

Thanks,

Question folks -

What's the best way to hook a PC/laptop up to this TV? I'm using S-Video now and it's ok... and I'm sure VGA is 100x better but obviously this isn't an LCD and has no VGA.

Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I bought a HDMI/DVI adapter off ebay for 6$. They are 40$ at CC. I love this TV but it doesnt seem to do PCs well. I dont know if there is anything that can be done. I made a thread about this problem but got no responses.

This kinda bummed me out, but as long as a PS3 or a 360 looks good on it im cool with it. Which is another thing i would like to know. Who here has a 360 hooked up to the 3082? How does it look?

I hooked my 360 up to it and it looks great (it's not my primary HDTV though)

The PS3 should look just as good.
(still debating on whether or not to sell both of my PS3 pre-orders or keep one!)

I don't know. You'd have to check because cable companies offer different HD channels in different areas.

Can you give a bit more detail :) . How are the colors? Is it good and bright?. How is it compared to an LCD of the same size?

OK fellow 3082 owners, here is my final conclusion of this TV. Im no videoohile but i am picky.

When i brought this TV home and turned it on i was amazed. SD looked great HD looked great, some stuff was breathtaking and made me giddy. :)

I have had a long week trying to decide if i should keep it or take it back for a LCD. After all, all the guys i work with KNOW LCDs have a better picture and are big ballin  becuase you can hang them on the wall. This made me doubt my purchase.

After going back to HH greg, BB,CC, sears. and checking out all the TVs again. My TV is definitly holding its own next to 80% of the TVs i looked at. And for the price i paid (i had a few hundred more i could have spent) its a great set. This TV is going to be just fine for me and ill now be happy.

So, Im now going to put this to rest for myself and be happy with my purchase. LOL. :p

Ok forgive me for not going through the thread here. but I'm kind of in a hurry so I rush registered to ask a few questions.

I need an HDTV by the end of the week and This TV seems like the best option but the geometry issues worry me since i'll be watching alot of anime and playing games on this set.

I also hear about HDMI issues and that HD Channels go through HDMI but non HD Channels don't.

How bad is everything? ANd What should I get instead if I don't get this set?

I apologize if these have been asked before but I'm in a huge hurry.

Also does this set do 720P and 480P? That's also very important.

I have had this set for about two weeks and it appears to have died on me. I did not have terrible geometry problems but the DISH receiver overlay (the little graphic with channel info/time etc.) did bow at the top portion of the screen until the set was warmed up. I did not notice the bottom doing this or the actual picture on the tv doing this either. When I got it and turned it on I went into the menu and adjusted the picture to suit me and also adjusted the tilt. I had everything going just fine and to suit me. I did notice full HD broadcast in 1080i that some of the bottom seemed cut off. I watch a lot of sports and the ticker with scores at the bottom were only displaying the top half. It seemed to get better again the longer the set was on. I also notice that the channel logo (ESPNHD) was cut off.

Fast forward to last night and I turn the tv on to watch college football on ESPN HD. My dish receiver displays its menus etc but there is no picture at all! I went downstairs to check my old (5-6 years) Toshiba standard 27" CRT and I am able to watch tv. I have yet to try another source such as a DVD to find out if the tv died or the DISH receiver died. Regardless I am considering exchanging for the LG slim fit. The 2 HDMIs were a big selling point at the same price as well as the Samsung name.

I have owned the 3082W set for about a week. Now I am starting to notice weird things on the screen. I am noticing almost what I want to call focusing. When the scenes change I'll see the image kind of focus in. I am also noticing wavy lines on edges. I was a big fan of this set at first. But now I am not so sure. I am pondering returning it and continuing to look. Is the problem I am describing fixable? Or is it part of the Geometry problems I am hearing about on this set? I am dissapointed that I am seeing these kind of problems. Today I tried to watch the Rock on DVD and the action scenes just made the TV flip out. Ugh... Whats a guy to do.

Sounds like a reciver problem to me. If the menus display it's the reciver. unless you care to elaborate

It was the receiver (rather the dish signal). The set works but the geometry issues and the screen not being formated (too big, like it is zoomed in) are really getting to me. I went into the service menu and got it better but I am still not happy. I can't believe that they would put something like this on the shelf for sale (but maybe that is the nature of the technology). I really don't want a LCD but it look like I may go that route. I guess my only other choice is to have it calibrated. Does ISF calibration fix geometry issues? The little I messed around in the service menu it appears that you can make it better but not perfect.

I believe a pro calibration would blow your mind.

The vast majority of these problems are fixable. Infortunately we don't have a Samsung flavor of KenTech's Sony Service Codes thread for the Sony's.

Cheers!

I had a service tech come over to try to fix the bad geometry on my TV. I was a work while my mom was there watching the guy with the TV. But it still has the same geometry problems. I think the tech tried to hide the bad geometry by shifting the screen a bit using the SM but it's actually worse now.

I need to call them up again...

Could someone please post their settings for video 1 and video 4. I was in my service menu and walked away to answer the phone. When I got back, to my horror, my daughter had the remote in her hand. If I can get it back to being close, I can adjust it back in perfect. I would be forever grateful.

ok i bought the samsung slimfit 3079 today from sam's club for like 500 hundred dollars. i like it but i am kind of worried after reading all of the bad stuff on here. well i have a few questions first will this tv display everything except for 1080p also will it auto configure to whatever the show is playing at such as 1080i or so forth. also i dont have hd through the cable company i have reg cable so i was wondering if i got a indoor ant because i live in a condo so no roof for me will i be able to get hi def signals with it and if so what is the best ant to buy if i want to get hi def channels. the last thing is how many people like this tv over the lg one that is just like it, oh yeah is this the oldest model and then the 3080 and then the 3082 is the newest one. i forgot on avg how long has someone owned this tv before they noticed any problem with it.

I wish every one here that owns these tvs the 80 and 82 would post the reviews on the net:) i had to search for 2 hours to find this place and get opinions on the set not a single site I found via google had reviews...
any ways I'm picking up the 82 at bestbuy tomorow cause its 650 bux on clearance and was just wondering, whats the exact differences between the 80 and 82? most sites say its just the speaker placement. But whats the exact difference and whats the better version?

one feature I like that the 82 has that the 80 does not have is the "shiftdown" feature. Sometimes I will watch in a Zoom1 mode rather than 16:9 or 4:3 (seems less distorted) . However, when in the Zoom 1 mode, the heads may get clipped....the shift down feature of the 3082 allows me to lower the picture so that the heads pull down and therefore not clipped. (But, every time you change channels, you must reset the shift....don't like that) The 3080 does not allow this shift down at all. That was the one feature that was very important to me and is the reason I was insistant that I have the 3082 over the 3080. One other thing....I really like my Samsung 3082 so far. I just hope it has longevity...it seems like a fragile electronic instrument.

You're working too hard. I entered this model number into a google search and this thread came up as the 5th listing on the first page. ;)

Anyway, best wishes with your new set.

I really think the major difference is the speaker placement. If memory serves, the 3082 came out just a tad later then the 3080 and some here say there were improvements made with the 3082. Mostly there are less reported problems with the 3082, but nothing specifically is mentioned.

I wish my Sony had it. I can make a slight vertical adjustment in the user menu, but this seems much more convenient. :)

These are all slimfit models. The oldest being the 3079, then the 3080 and the newest is the 3082. Aside from minor differences in cabinetry, color and speaker placement, bug fixes seem to be "better" with each one. This is not from personal experience but from what I've read here.

I just purchased the 3082 tonight at bestbuy. it works perfectly except for one thing.

In each corner is a color blotch its the most noticable in the lower left corner, I can ignore and hardly notice the blotches in the other corners.

but the one in the lower left corner annoys me its huge and is all ways Green, My question is can I fix this problem via your guys help? or am i gonna have to return this tv. (hopes not he literally had to lug this 117lb tv up a flight of stairs)

P.S:I've checked every thing as for interferance and magnetic near the tv and none are causing problems I even removed my 6.1 speaker setup away and it changed nothing and didn't seem to be causing the problem.

But so far its working perfectly now.

This goes back to advice I've given before about letting a set settle in before getting too excited about anomalies. Color blotches are especially susceptible to going away pretty quickly. They may even come back a bit before leaving for good. It's common with crt sets.

Do try to run your set alot. Doing this can help to bring out any serious problems before the end of a 30 day return period.

I went to bed last night and wanting to leave the tv on per ur advice i left it on while i slept with it on the weather channel so i could have some background noise.

i woke up the tv set was off, I turned it back on and it wouldn't turn back on. I've unplugged it let it sit for a bit, plugged it back in and nothing.

Ouch! :(

Well, this is actually the purpose of running it as much as possible when new - to identify those sets that will fail early (infant mortality). Unfortunately, yours failed. Better now that on the 31 day. I know that's little consolation.

This is supposed to be a fun experience.

What will you do now?

I had that happen to my 1st 3082. It was during a rainstorm but not a lot of electrical activity...I didn't know exactly why it happened. I had the TV for only 3 days and so I was definitely concerned about this TV. I took it back to HH Gregg and they were very accomodating. I took home a Toshiba instead...but the PQ etc was terrible....so I went back to a new different 3082...and that is what I have now. I sure wonder if the same thing may happen someday to this 3082, although after 5 months it has been great (knock on wood). Sorry to hear about your problem and maybe someone will chime in on what you can do. The symptoms are exactly like mine ie, red light just flickers.Would not turn on. They told me to try a reset....unplug the cords for several hours...didnt work for me though. Good luck.

I've got a purple color blotch on the top left of my TX-S3082 that appeared today. I bought this set in July so the problem has appeared past the return date :(

At first the blotch was about 2 inches in diamater at the top left and now it's only about half an inch. I don't have any magnetic devices around the area either.

Is this something that will go away and I won't have to worry about coming back after the warranty expires in 7 months? Or is this a sign my TV is defective? Why does it happen, what causes it?

this is happening to me too as per my entry in the official samsung slimfit thread.
its only happening on the component channels i've checked, It happens on both my xbox and my ps2 and any thing hooked up via component. both AV channels and Svideo dont have the problem regular cable and digital cable dont have the problem either.

Neither of the hdmi's have it either *went out and bowered an hdmi blu ray player to get some thing that used blu ray* and it didn't have the problems its only the 2 component hook ups.

P.S: i'm using 70 dollar monster cables with all the 24k, foil/no interferance protection component cables...

Hello, i recently purchased this Samsung TV just a few days. Things seemd to be working fine , however i did notice how the top right corner, the lines did not tend to go streight. It was a bit noticable when i played ps2, not noticble at all on widesceen HD broadcasts, however it was noticable on normal analog TV , since it's not broadcast by defualt in widescreen. I tried going into the service menu and i really messed up the settings bad. I called samsung and they told me that they were going to send a tech guy to my place, however they havent gotten back to me yet.

I was frustrated and starting looking at this thread and i saw how someone posted their numerical values for the deflection portion of the service menu. I punched in the numbers and did some tweaking of my own. It seemed to be back to normal however now i notice that sometimes horizontal ines on the bottom portion of the screen are not straight anymore. If there is a line on a menu or something of the sort it seems to curve just a bit upward. I'm not sure which value or values to adjust in order to the fix the problem. Are there just normal basic factory defaults for the deflection values? I'm a novice so i'm not so sure about certain things.

Thank You for your time,

Ian

before you started messing with the service menu you always write down your initial values. You are stuck with what you have, atleast you were able to get it somewhat back to normal and didn't do any big damange.

Did you actually tell Samsung that you messed with the service menu? DON'T EVER DO THAT! If you admit to them that you did they could void your warranty.

yes i've been doing more research into it.

Xbox and xbox 360 games if they run in hd. 480P or 720p the lines do not show up. any Interlaced resolution and the lines do appear.
I was sure I had seen then when i was playing high def content but upon closer inspection it was just the game i was running.

Ps2 not running in progressive does the same.

so that seems to be the problem for me. On the component channels none Progressive content is showing with up and down vertical lines throughout the picture.

Well, i ended up just returning the entire TV, i think i'm gonna do some more research , maybe get an LCD. I have no clue where to start and my budget is only up to $1000, i'm not sure if i can get anything to match the quality of this TV's HD picture which was pretty nice. If i could get close that would be good, at least a nice LCD that will display ps2 and ps3 nicely WITHOUT geometry issues....

I was able to pick this up last week open box at Bestbuy for $350 and I got the $80 4 year warranty. I got home and watched LOTR Return of the King and noticed blotches of color. Small blue blotch in the top right, huge yellow blotch in the middle, and small but a lot more noticeable red blotch in the bottom left. I'm calling tomorrow to have it fixed. Also for the past few days I've only had channels 3,4,and 5 because the open box model didn't come with a remote, you can get to the search for cable channels menu bar with the volume and channel buttons but you need to press ENTER to start the search, ahhh.

Tomorrow will be a good day though. The TV will be fixed, I'm getting a remote, I'm getting an HD antenna (so I'll have all my cable channels and then HD channels over the air), and I'm connecting it to my computer with a VGA to Component cable.

Also my Xbox 360 looks awesome over component. Sort of wished this model had a VGA input also so my DVD's can be upconverted.

I have no clue where to start and my budget is only up to $1000, i'm not sure if i can get anything to match the quality of this TV's HD picture which was pretty nice. If i could get close that would be good, at least a nice LCD that will display ps2 and ps3 nicely WITHOUT geometry issues....

I was curious about this Samsung SlimFit tv for I was considering buying a second set. I still have my 32" Sony VVega XBR which is one of the first models that came out 10-11yrs ago and costed me $1700 plus tax and stand. I wanted the latest and greatest at that time and sure enough Sony had it. It has been serving me well and the picture still looks great. I still remember when I had it on and one of the moving guys who brought in my sofa thought that I was watching in HDTV. This past year though it has been shutting itself off on rare occasions. I only had to turn it off for a while and the symptoms would disappear, then it would do it again on some rare occasion. It must be getting old and someday I'm going to replace it with a new SED tv which are coming out late 2007.

Anyway, with all these problems going on with the SlimFit (the name sounds like some Levi's jeans), I've lost interest in it. Besides, they only come in 30" models in the US which are smaller than I would like. It is now available in 32" widescreen but outside of the US (CS-32Z30HE & WS32Z30HE) which may have addressed the problems.

Unless you prefer a skinnier and lighter HDtv, you are better off going for the Sony VVega KD-34XBR970 which can be had below 1 grand (shipping included which expires on the 27th, just go to their site). Otherwise the LCDs like Bravia from Sony, the Aquos from Sharp, and the Bordeaux from Samsung, are your best bets.

could someone please do me a huge favor and post up their default values for their "Options" settings in the service menu? I kinda changed a bunch of settings by accident, thinking that the reset in the main menu would revert to default settings. Yes, I know now that I should have written the settings down before fiddeling, but I didnt find out about the reset setting until after the damage was made.

My TV still has Geo problems and the color blotches in the corner even after a tech came to "fix" it. So the tech company sent a replacement request to Samsung. I should be hearing from them soon!

Samsung wouldn't happen to let me be able to trade in this TV for a newer TV (an LCD perhaps) would they? I would obviously pay the difference for it. I mean I bought it back in late August 2006!

I just finished reading all 15 pages on this thread. I started a thread in the wrong CRT board on this site, I think. Noone answered probably b/c I was on the wrong board here. And then posted on another website and someone forwarded me this thread. Great great thread.

I have the Samsung 3080. Bought it at Best Buy. I like the speakers on bottom and we have this in our living room in an armoire and it fits better with the speakers on bottom vs. on the side. I think the 3082 would also fit but with maybe an inch to spare.

Anyway, I bought mine at Best Buy and did some nice pricematching as BestBuy puts them on sale quite a bit online. They don't sell the 3080 in store but I bought it in store and they shipped it from the website to the store. I think I got them to later match as low as $630.

I bought mine the week before 2006 Thanksgiving. It came in store the day before Thanksgiving for me to pick it up. When I installed it, I noticed that the sports ticker seemed to drop down from right to left. So the bottom 1/3 would be cut off on the left. I didn't like that but could live with it. I have DISH and also noticed that the DISH box that showed what channel you are on when you change the channel at the top, would sorta drop down from left to right. I would pause it and then could see literally more pixels above the box on the right side. Also the HD watermark on some stations (ESPNHD for one) would cut off partially on the right.

Another thing to note, over CHristmas, we went to some friends houses for parties and what not. One friend has a 60" CRT old-school HDTV. Toshiba, maybe. Anyway, his sports ticker was twice as bad as mine. It didn't tilt from right to left, instead the entire ticker was partially cut off. And then another friend has a Samsung DLP and his had a bowing of the sports ticker. So it made me feel better about mine.

But I still didn't like that, but could live with it.

As it is, we have a Sony 50" wega rear projection LCD upstairs and that has no problems. So I needed/wanted an HD that I could put downstairs, fit in the armoire and not cost an arm & a leg. I could live with these problems. But of course I wanted to fix it.

I tried the Menu settings and the TILT features but as many people know that moves stuff around but doesn't fix it.

I then found this thread earlier this week. I don't have the Avia DVD yet but a friend of mine brought it to work and is giving it to me today. Last night, I put it on ESPN2HD such that I would have 1) a sports ticker on the bottom and 2) something on the left and right to judge by. I went to the Service Menu and wrote down all of the default settings.

I then started changing VAMP, VSHIFT, HAMP, HSHIFT, and the LIN ones. I changed all of the settings to see what they would buy me and then put them back to default. I then started off adjusting the bottom ticker and got that to raise up on the left so it wasn't cutting off. I changed the AMP and SHIFTS on the right & left to make the HD bars that ESPN puts up even and symmetrical. Cool stuff.

I have it currently in the settings I optimized last night and wrote those down. I am going to use the AVIA DVD this weekend to reoptimize it.

I will say that the only problem I have now is the rectangle/box on the DISH channel is still a bit dropping from left to right but hardly noticeable. Using the AVIA might fix it, might not. I can live with it. Honestly the sports ticker annoyed me more. Also, previously the HD watermarks on some stations on the right was cut off some. No more. This was a great exercise!

These are my before and after conditions. Before is the number on the left, after is on the right. This was optimized using ESPN2HD and not AVIA. I will use AVIA DVD this weekend.

Justsc, I saw your many postings on the Dynamic settings. After doing the SM adjustments, I know that resets your standard menu settings, right?

Anyway, after doing the SM adjust, I then went to the normal Menu and adjusted it to the following:

Contrast - 55
Brightness - 24
Sharpness - 0
Color - 47
Tint - 57

Two questions. By doing that, does that make it no longer Dynamic mode? What does Dynamic mode mean?

Second, I have had mine since Thanksgiving, not sure if that is 100hr but I probably have exceeded that. I had the Contrast set to 100 until last night when I changed it due to this thread. Any long term damage done by having it at 100 for so long?

DotFied,

Very, very helpful posts. Nice work too.

I am very interested in learning what values you settle on once you've completed the Avia calibration.

Cheers!

I copied the wrong #s from this:

Contrast - 55
Brightness - 24
Sharpness - 0
Color - 47
Tint - 57

I think it is closer to:

Contrast 55
Brightness 47
Sharpness 50
Color 31
Tint 5

Anyway, I will adjust SM with Avia and this as well with Avia this weekend. I will say that it looks great. It looked great before but a bit annoying with the sports ticker. My wife could tell with the ticker before but not with the DISH channel guide. Now she can't tell anything. Pretty cool. It was neat seeing how much picture I was losing and then getting it back.

Does the power off -> Mute -> 1 8 2 -> power on

bring up the service menu on ALL samsung tvs? A friend of mine has a DLP and needs to adjust his. His is a Samsung as well. And I have a DynaFlat Samsung SD CRT as well that I would like to adust.

Hello,

I bought a 3082 about ten days ago from Best Buy.

This is my first experience with HDTV and HDMI.

I'm using both HDMI inputs, one from the Comcast DVR, one from the DVD player.

That's it.

The problem: After the TV has been on for at least an hour or so, the audio becomes out of sync with the video. Just slightly at first, and then it gets more pronounced. Turning the TV off and back on helps, but the problem returns, sooner than before.

Anyone else run into this or know of a fix?

Thanks!!

I bought this TV back in October. this set has worked flawlessly until now. I opted not to get the HD package from my cable provider because...well...my cable provider sucks. Well 2 days ago, my TV started making that clicking sound that you all have mentioned about when it turns on, but however it now does this constantly even when it has been on for over an hour. It almost seems like it is trying to degauss itself. I have tried this with analog "AIR" channels. Digital channels from my box, and HD AIR channels. It will even do this while watching a DVD. I was wondering if anybody else has experienced this sort of clicking problem with this model. If I can explain it better, the TV makes a loud click and then at the same time the screen will fade and twist and then go back to normal. Like I said, it is almost like this thing is automatically degaussing itself.

Hey guys I just saw this thread and wanted to put in some input. I have owned two of these beasts since June '06. I had my first one replaced after 3 months because of a focus problem. I don't know if anyone else notices the viertical interlacing lines on the left and right sides of the screen, but I have seen them on every model! I hate that. So now I am about to get a refund from Samsung (hopefully, they are still working out my case) because my second unit now has rainbowing! In high contrast shots, you can see what are essentially colorbars all across the picture! It is horrible. As far as geometry goes, it really is terrible on my set! I can't even pillarbox images anymore because of the oval picutre now. Also, if anyone's interested in the service menu code (if you dare enter it), it's mute 1 8 2 (power). The set has to be off in the mode. It will reset you custom picture settings though, so be sure and write them down.

Also, two of my friends have it and they are all green in the upper corners of the screen. I have never heard of such a magnetism problem before, and neither has my repair man. Once it is degaussed, its fine, but if you turn the set of, it resets and the green or purple is still there.

I'm still a crt man though, and within a few weeks I am going to try my luck with the heavier Sony 34 incher. I hear much better news about it than this samsung or the toshiba. Good luck with yours.

Hi guys,

You have some very good info here! I just got the "Sammy 82" set yesterday, and I absolutely love it. I have a couple minor geometry issues and questions. I also feel bad that I watched it for about four hours last night in dynamic mode. I will turn down the contrast before I watch it tonight. I will also let the TV "break in" for 100 hours before trying any SM adjustments. As far as using a calibrating disc, is it really necessary? Other than getting rid of screen artifacts, aren't the picture settings pretty much subjective to the user's eye?

Anyway, to my real questions. I have the problem of the 16:9 aspect being cut off a bit on the sides, like a lot of others. I take it this is called overscan, and I can fix it in the SM by lowering the H Amp setting, correct? I haven't noticed any other geometry issues, other than the CNN ticker cutting off a bit on the bottom left corner, but that honestly doesn't bother me much. I don't want to go screwing with a bunch of settings that may ruin my otherwise great picture trying to fix that minor ticker issue. The "tilt" option doesn't fix it, I've already tried, but if there is a simple SM fix to bring up that one corner, I'll try it.

Second question - About the SM, I know I should record the factory settings before messing with it. Do those settings show on the initial entry into the SM? Also, is there any inherent dangers with messing with the SM? From what I've read, it sounds like I should be OK as long as I write the factory setting down. Once I get into the SM, is there an exit and save option, or do I just power off to exit?

Third question - Has anyone found a use for the USB upgrade port? Is there something like a firmware update I can put on a memory stick?

Thanks!

Moonie

NM, I figured out most of that. I'm still wondering about that USB port.

FYI, the USB port is just for use by a service tech.

Also, I had the problem of the sound not matching the video when I used a new RCA DVD player through the HDMI connection. The HDMI cable I was using came with the RCA DVD player. I returned the RCA player, and bought a new Samsung DVD Player/Recorder, and also bought an HDMI cable, and I have not had any problems with audio using the new Samsung player and Cable.

FYI, the USB port is just for use by a service tech.

So is the service menu, but that didn't stop me from messin' with it.

I'm a bit worried about using the HDMI port. I've got a new cable on order to go with my new upscaling DVD player, but I've heard that this TV won't support HDCP over HDMI, thereby denying me any DVD resolutions over 480p.

I hope this rumor is baseless.

EDIT: It works fine, but I think I read into the rumor wrong. Apparently, the HDCP think only applies to HD-DVD and Blueray players?

Ok.. I got my tv back in September, and it had some geometry issues. It was within 30 days so I got a new one.. with the same problems. The guy said it was common on all TVs, and rather than force this guy to return the tv and get me a new one (it was delivered, not in store) I thought ok, maybe I can work with this and get it to how I want, or after the 100 hours it'll be better. Unfortunately that has not happened, and after going through the Test screen for another marathon session, I'm ready to get this replaced. I have the extended service warranty through Circuit City (for $89 more, why not?) but I don't want to keep having them send back defective TVs. I got this originally in September 2006. How should I approach this problem? Obviously there are numerous stories here about people doing similar things. What strategies seem to work best for this?

ChrisAshton84

My room mate bought this last fall (Aug / Sep) from Circuit City - we noticed almost immediately that some material seemed to be cut off at the sides. I just found this topic and went through the setup menu to try to get more viewing area. It seems that the reason they had it zoomed in so much (vamp 46, vshift 27, hamp 20, hshift 27) is to cover up significant distortion problems (surprise).

I've still got a few problems with it - first, with hamp 0, I cannot get the right of the picture to touch the right of the screen. With hamp at 0 I also get very bad distortion on the right side of the screen. In order to correct the distortion I am forced to increase hshift to 15 or so (their 27 gets it almost straight). At this point even with hamp 0, the left side of the picture is off the screen, and it only gets worse when I increase hamp to get the right side to touch. Decreasing hshift makes the right side horribly distorted. Vertical is fine, I don't know why they had it so huge, as I can get a perfect picture in that direction. Obviously people have problems with this screen, but this seems particularly bad. We loose probably 2 inches of screen on the left and one inch on the right (to shift the really distorted part off the screen).

This distortion is still noticeable, especially when there is any text or fine lines towards the right side of the screen. The image also does not look centered. This is not ideal as my roommate just bought a xbox 360, and it's a glaring problem to me (then again, I'm pretty anal about things like this). He did ask me why the subtitles in his movie were blurred and off the screen when he was watching a movie though, so this is pretty bad.

One thing to point out, I've just been tuning this with an hdmi connection from my cable box, so I don't know if I have the right amount of screen viewable or if I should change settings to decrease distortion (but also viewing angle). I read a lot about this when I was tuning it a couple of weeks ago, but I don't remember - has anyone successfully gotten the full image, distortion free from this tv? And should I try to get ahold of one of the true calibration sources?

It seems like the image should at least be able to reach the right side at roughly the same time as it reaches the left unless there is a serious problem with the electron gun. We don't have it near any other major electronics which could deflect it that much. Is it possible that it's just the orientation in the room causing this? I don't remember what the warranty is, but I'm moving out in a few days and would like to help him / be able to tell him to get it serviced before I take off.

Thanks, and sorry if this was posted here somewhere, I've read it, but read so much I could have forgotten some.

Just get a replcement or refund if possible. These first generation Slimfits had many focus problems that are unfixable. Circuit City most likely has dealt with many returns on those models, so they should be familiar with the shortcomings. If you can trade up for this years model (TX-T3092WH) you'll likely have fewer problems.

Wow, I'd assumed I was in the right thread. My roommate actually has the 3082WH. I'll look around on here more for the info, perhaps there's something different about them. I take it you'd not expect to find this problem in a WH model?

EDIT: I fail at reading, ignore my post. I found the warranty info and he should be still be covered. The pulsing picture I've noticed mentioned other places is also an issue. Here's to getting plenty of work done. Calling on Monday.

Not trying to necrobump this thread but I have had this TV for some time and love it. I haven't fully dipped into tweaking it yet but will do it soon as my HD-A2 comes in. This is my main gaming TV and personally is the perfect size for the small room I currently have it in. :)

... Alright I have the 3082 as well & after looking through all these pages I have found issues, but nothing fitting my exact problem.

1st off I can literally see "lines" in the upper left and right of the creen which look like the scan lines are just further apart which is due ot some type of distortion. In addition there is a definite red bleed in the top left & top right of the screen (very visible in white text). It looks almost like a convergence issue on a RPTV.

If anyone has any suggestion I am open to them...

I've got a strange thing happening with my TV. This has only happened since I plugged the 1st HDMI piece to it (my HD-A2 via HDMI). After watching a movie (HD DVD mostly noticed this happen) I'll switch the tuner to TV mode and all color is gone displaying regular programming in black and white.

The way I get around it is by turning the TV off for about a minute or 2 and turning it back on. Then everything is back to normal

Has anyone experienced this yet? The TV just got out of warranty about a month ago and has worked flawlessly until I connected my HD-A2 via HDMI with this issue.

I just bought a the samsung 30 inch slimfit hdtv, it was open box offer. I received the wrong remote, but I can try to get that replaced tomorrow. I also just downloaded the user guide...

I have a couple of questions...

1. It looks like the tv is setup for parental control, i have comcast cable with dvr, i can't get view certain chanels, it is asking for a password, I don't know the passoword, how do I clear this?

2. My digital box is setup for HDTV, how do I know the HDTV is working, i noticed there are 2 spots in the back to connect the cable, which one should I be connecting my cable line to? The bottom one does say cable and the top one says Air...not sure what this means...

Please help...

For #2, "air" is where you would install an antenna. Install it onto the one that says "cable".

Not sure about #1, but there's probably a default code in the manual to bypass the parental controls.

OK fellas so my 3082 still acts up in the same way and I'm wondering what I should do. Recall my issue, ever since I connected something via HDMI to it, it has done this. The TV source setting if turned on from the start will play normal but if I play my 360 (connected via comp, will be redoing it this weekend via HDMI) long enough and/or if I play my HD-A2 (connected via HDMI) and then switch to TV source the screen shows color for a second then instantly goes to black and white. This B&W issue is ONLY on TV source. For me to get TV back to color I have to turn it off and let it 'cool down' for some time. I can easily go back to HD-A2 (HDMI), 360 or Wii (comp), or PS2 (reg A/V) without a problem.

I would try a different HDMI cable.

Other than that and trying the other HDMI port, I got nothin'. The only thing I have hooked up through HDMI is my upscaling DVD player, and it's never had any issues.

Honestly, it sounds like a defect in the TV.

It's defective. Hit it, seriously.

It's the degausser stuck in a loop, all right. Smacking it is all I can recommend other than taking it in.

People always underestimate the power of a good, well-placed whack. I guess you could also try turning it quickly off and on a few times - that might unstick it - but that might burn something else out.

Ok, here is my problem.

HDMI and Comp do not work on my 3082. Tech says its the SSB card. It's the card with the HDMI and audio ports on it. Anyone know where I can get one. I want to put it in myself. The part number on the sticker is,
AA97-16460N-P
there is also AA95-03458N
and Code No AA41-01185B printed on the card.
Samsung parts were no help. Anyone know where the system manual can be downloaded. The old links above do not work.

Thanks in advance,
Pio.
