Hi all, i checked the forums and didn't see this thread started. I also decided it should be different from the other thread because I believe these are 2 different beasts of TV's. 1st I'd like to state I did own a TX-R3079W. I returned it because i knew the S version was coming out, and boy am I glad I did. Between the 2 I tried out a 32 inch LG LCD, which I must say I couldn't handle due to the horrible black levels. Anyway, for those wondering most Circuit City places have the TV in, they just don't have it out to be displayed. I'd also like to add that they call it txs3082w and don't have the h that I was accustomed to, so make sure you don't add it or their system won't find it. I've had mine since Friday of last week, and had to return 1 due to a malfunctioning audio port out of the box. i have a strong picture throughout the whole tube though, at least as far as my newbie eyes can tell, and I've also got very minimal if no geometry issues. I'm tempted to take out a measuring tool just to see, cause i thought I had one, but when i checked it i saw my eye was lying to me (maybe cause i was used to the problems I heard with the earlier model in the other thread.) I whole heartedly reccoment this set, and am happy to answer any questions anyone has on it. Oh one more side note, this set has 2 hdmi ports instead of 1.

The set is pretty damn sexy. I got it as a replacement for my tv that wasn't being made anymore. Samsung was pretty fast with the replacement after the 4 months that it took to figure out the problem with the other tv. (I sent it to authorized repair place and it took them 4 months to get back to me....sad) Anyway, I must say it's pretty good. I paid $325 for my previous t.v and this upgrade was free, so not bad.

Out of curiousity...what is the difference between this model and the 3079? I've got the 3079 now and now that I've used the service menu, its got a really great picture in my opinion. I was considering bragging another for my bedroom as they seem to be about $699 now at some places in my area.

Well, just compare the two:

txs3082 (http://www.samsung.com/Products/TV/SlimFitHDTV/files/txs3082.pdf)
txr3079 (http://www.samsung.com/Products/TV/SlimFitHDTV/files/txr3079.pdf)

From what I can see, the 79 doesn't have 2 HDMI ports, that SRS sound stuff and some other things, but knowing samsung, these could be wrong heh.

yeah i saw one at local bestbuy picture is great but there are still tiny bowing effects you can't really see it when tv is playing but when you turn on the on screen menu you can see the meus is a bit tilted

What do you guys think when comparing the 3082 to LG's 30FS4D? I was dead-set on buying the LG, but the Sammy now has me second-guessing that decision, especially with the dual-HDMI inputs.

Actually after checking out Circuit City after work, I'll just buy the 3082 instead of the cheaper 3079. I do like the new look of the set and the pair of hdmi's will help out. I'm sure that I can tinker in the service menu and get the picture to match my 3079.

So, does the 3082 have better picture quality than the 3079 and have Samsung fixed the terrible geometry issue plaguing the older models?

HTrayne
04-21-06, 09:53 PM
The 3082's warping on the bottom of the screen isn't as bad as the 3079, but it's there on the top, as it is with the LG 30FX4D. I still can't tell 95% of the time when watching either that the geometry issues are there....it's only when I enter the menu that I notice it. I'm still leaning towards the LG for myself, even with Samsung offering the two HDMI's. I don't trust them quite yet with this set after the problems they had last year. I'll simply use an upconverter via component and live with it.

omad0n
04-22-06, 05:47 PM
From what i can tell with my tests (amateur btw using Mario Kart for the game cube lol) the geometry isn't nearly as bad as from the 79 i had. In addition, while on the 79 i notied really badly how soft the picture got at the outter edges, i'm not noticing it here on the 82. At some point or other i will get out a ruler or something and start to measure distances and see what sort of bending is really going on.

Unfonrtunetly it's been too long since i had the 79 so i cna't do a direct picture comparison, so I'm not sure the PQ is is better or worse then the older model. One thing i do know though is that watching Sin City through HDMI is a joy, especialy after suffering through it on an LCD that cost over double what this TV cost.

Compared to the TX-R3079WH the depth on the new model has increased by .3 inches so maybe thats how they alleviated the severe bowing by increasing the sets depth so the electron gun is set further back and doesn't have to shoot at such wide angles.

omad0n, can you see the lines that make up the picture when you look at the screen close up in 720p and 1080i modes?

After nearly six months of wrangling with CC and Samsung warranties, I FINALLY got a replacement for my 3079 — a 3082 model from CC. The geometry issues are still there, although not nearly as bad as the 3079. When there are vertical lines on the screen, I can see a little warping, but I haven't done any tweaking yet (I heard you're supposed to let tubes get some hours on them). And this may sound strange, and I may just be excited to be rid of my plagued 3079, but the picture seems a bit more vibrant and clearer than the 3079.

About a month ago I had picked up the txr3079wh but had returned it a week after. This one was a good one as the geometry problem was kept to a minimum, as it was hardly noticeable and even knowing it was there, it didn't bug me. What bugged me was the overall Slimfit design problem where 3 inches of the left and right sides were blurry.

I bought the set for gaming and it was a real eyesore for games with lots of text like Final Fantasy XI. I even tried the LG Slimfit and it seemed worse. Everything looks fine as long as there weren't any words. But I play a lot of games and even channel surfing with the channel guide up was bad.

I been researching other sets since then and I would really prefer to get a crt over lcd, and since this is for my room the huge sony wegas just wont do. I really liked the samsung slimfit but I know that they all have larger phosphores(is this right?) on the outer edges to make this design work.

So, what I wanna know is if the problem underlined above still exists in the new txs3082w set, and if so is it as bad as the 3079?

I would like to avoid having to bring my 360 in to test it as it isn't easy to get to the cords.

I just bought the TXS-3082W and the problem with the blurry text on the sides of the screen still exists. I must say that I can only notice this with text, but since I bought this TV purely for XBOX 360 gaming, it is an issue for me.

The horizontal bowing that a lot of users reported with the previous year's model seems to have been fixed, although loading some calibration images from the service menu revealed major vertical line bending appearing closer to the right side of the screen.

I really wanted to like this set - it's a perfect size and the price is right, but I will most likely return it due to the blurry text issues.

Now it's back to the drawing board - what TV should I get for my gaming needs? Non-slim CRTs are not an option due to space limitations in my studio and good LCDs are just too expensive. Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance!

I've been testing these TV's as much as I can at work (Samsung v. LG) and I'm still undecided. What's killing me is what the Samsung does on quick transitions from black back up to full picture - it distorts, seemingly stretching to fill up the screen. This is driving me crazy!

Using Samsung's HD Up-converter, I tested both the HDMI and component inputs on each TV, with the Samsung producing a more appealing picture, despite the LG being a little bit sharper. Also, because Samsung is still using glass as opposed to LG using the no-glare screen, the contrast is a bit better on the Sammy. Again, throw in the dual HDMI's and it's the Samsung, hands down, but then it does that crazy stretching thing when coming up from black to a new edit in the film or television broadcast being displayed. What is this? I keep reading about "overscan" - is that what I'm seeing? Can this be fixed or adjusted? Has anyone else noticed this? The LG doesn't do it, and if the Sammy can't be fixed, I'll be settling for the LG, or getting away from Slimfit designs entirely. Anyone have another suggestion on a 30" HD that's less than 38" wide??

. . . but then it does that crazy stretching thing when coming up from black to a new edit in the film or television broadcast being displayed. What is this?

Do you mean that it is physically distorting when there is a cut to a different image? Or is it a variance of the contrast and luminance?

I just bought this TV a few days ago and noticed a few "quirks" about it. (i.e. the black levels automatically changing in random spurts) After about two or three hours of use the tv made a pop and fuzz sound and now displays everything fine. It's almost like the tv just needed to "warm up".

Try this.

Unplug the tv from every device and from every power source. No connections whatsoever. No plugs in the wall or in a surge suppressor or in a power strip. Nothing. Leave it that way for up to 4 hours. Try again (just the tv and power).

This can serve to resolve some of the toughest problems. It's a tv version of a hard reset. If it works, keep your repair appointment just in case.

Good Luck! ;)

It physically distorts when coming up from black. For instance, the X-Men 3 trailer plays on our loop. Everytime the edits fade to black, and back up, it stretches going into the edit, and then back out as it fades up from black. It's on everything. What the heck is this?

I've had my 3082 for about a week now and really like it. It's just a bedroom tv for me, but the HD picture is very good, the D* SD picture is very good, and the regular cable feed is ok.

I like the added inputs and 2 HDMI's are nice.

There is a very slight bending at the left bottom, and a slight blur in the upper corners, but only in the service menu.

Overall, I really like it.

A couple of basic ideas:

1. Make sure the aspect ratio is correct for the signal that's coming into the tv.

2. Have you tried hooking up a DVD player and testing out a DVD?

I doubt it is overscan. Is it the edges that distort, or the whole image that is blurred? Or does it not involve blurring, but pincushioning?

I just purchased the 82 yesterday, I am liking it even though it does have the issue with Geometry (the curving of a straight line in the lower portion of the tv). Although I was concerned when I found out today that it does not have 720P only up-converts to 1080i. I was wondering since I have a Xbox 360 and it's preferred output is 720P as is most HD channels should I exchange the tv?

I dont think you should worry at all, my friend has the samsung 3079 and the 360 looks great on it. You arent going to find a crt that does 720 native, so unless you want to but a tv that isnt a crt id say keep it. The bottom line is if it looks good to your own eyes id stay with it.

thalazy...I'm have a 3079 slimfit that I use exclusively for gaming and I have no issues with 1080i on my 360. The one thing I noticed was that I had my 360 settings on 720p and my screen would get a odd flickering on the bottom occassionally. Switched it to 1080i and havent had any issues since. The one thing that helped my set also was tinkering in the service menu a bit. Definitely improved my picture. I've gotten alot of compliments about how good my 360 games look on the Sammy.

At the risk of opening up a horrible wound and starting a nasty string of insults, has ANYONE figured out the QAM capabilities of this TV?

Here's why I ask:

I have a TX-P2670 (normal tube) Sammy now, and it needs a new tuner board. Samsung has told me that the part is deeply backordered, and that they're willing to replace it instead of sending a service tech 50+ miles to replace the part when it comes in. They have offered to replace it with a TX-S3082. I have a Sony XBR960 as my main set right now, so I'm not worried about waiting.

However, nobody seems to know the QAM capabilites of the 3082 (or 3080, etc). I know for a fact based on other posts that the 2670 is capable of going QAM with a firmware upgrade.

Is it worth giving up a non-SlimFit 26" CRT with QAM for a 30" SlimFit with unknown QAM capabilities? I told the Executive Customer Relations rep that I would have to call her back to let her know if I wanted to wait on the repair or just replace it.

I'm VERY used to having the QAM with my Sony, and I know that my 26" is capable of it, so I'm loathe to give it up just for 4 more inches diagonal, possible geometry issues, and a slightly narrower depth. So, is there ANY word on the QAM on the SlimFits?

Please?

Most of us adjust geometry, color, convergence, black level, and focus. There are a few threads around here that deal with the service menu. A quick search should turn up some results, most of them explain the service menu better than I can.

So, in other words just buying the set and plugging it in is not good enough, it's important to mess with it.

How do you know what is good or not though? lol... I don't really notice beyond the obvious.

Edit: No luck in finding anything good.

I'm kind of a noob, so I'm worried that once I get to the service menu I could screw things up... so maybe I just won't look for it.

One thing I did notice is that my TV is the 3082WH (not the W)... so I think it's a different TV anyway... maybe I should start a new thread?

I'm going to attach a few pics... (yes I know it'll be hard to tell) but it's almost as if my entire screen is tilted to the left slightly.

I only noticed this after Downloading a trailer via the XBOX live marketplace to my 360... and I saw the left side of the screen's text was barely being cut off and the right side of the screens text was tilted up a bit.

I assume that is a problem that shouldn't have occured...

How can I fix this? Or should I just call Best Buy since I have a service plan?

Please see attached pics... although I know it's just a picture of the TV... you might be able to see what I'm talking about by comparing the locaion of the

X button on the left (blue color) and the A button on the right (green color)

It seems like it's tilted... and I also noticed on the right and left side of the TV the lines are like wider than in the middle of the TV.

Go to the Samsung Service Manual here and look at the images of anomalies that can be fixed in the Service Menu, in the Deflection section. Scroll down about 4-5 pages and you'll see pictures of all kinds of "geometry" problems.

Trying to eyeball it is not very successful. The best approach is to use a calibration dvd like Avia or DVE. These discs guide you through the proper calibration of all user menu settings and can make a huge difference. When I did this on my set I watched all my dvds all over again because it felt like I had a new tv. I prefer Avia because it seems a little easier to use and had good explanations about the different settings and test patterns.

If you have a service plan with Best Buy, they will fix or replace the TV if you bring it in to them. Since it's still under factory warranty, if there's something broken with the set, Samsung will take care of it under warranty.

But, neither company is responsible for calibrating a set, and neither one will do it free of charge.

As mentioned in the owner's manual (I posted the blurb in the SlimFit thread), tilt can all depend on where the TV is physically located, too. If you have the Tilt setting maxed out and there's still a problem it might be worth having Samsung send someone out to make sure it's a problem with the set, and not with the environment.

This TV wasn't dropped at all when it was taken home, was it?

I'm not sure that ALL of the geometry problems on that particular display model set are factory faults. There look to be environmental issues with that installation, too.

How old is that picture? Is that even an S3082? I'm not sure if any of the current US models have "HD Ready" on them; I think they all say "HDTV 1080i". Even my ancient TX-P2670 says "HDTV 1080i" on it, instead of just "HD Ready". "HD Ready" is indicative of 2000-era models, not 2003+ models, and indicative of an HD display, rather than a HDTV with built-in tuner. The 3082 is a true HDTV, not just an HD-Ready display...

I know of one value that I will never adjust ever again. I have a TX-P2745XP, an EDTV from about 3 years ago. It's a 27" set that is capable of receiving and displaying 1080i with the adjustment of one SM setting. Pretty cool, eh?

Anyway, because my set was not officially HD, it did not include DNIe (I believe that's how they write it). While in the SM, I saw the setting just sitting there begging me to turn it on. Well, I did turn it on and the results scared the !@#$ out of me. My tv would no longer turn on and stay that way. I would enter the proper sequence to get into the SM and the set would power on, flash real bright and turn off. I thought for sure I'd completely hosed my new tv. Of course, I panicked. I tried everything to no avail. I walked away for awhile, returned later and was able to get back into the SM and return that setting to it's original value. Whew! What a relief. I immediately posted this info to the forum I was on at the time and it became an instant "No No" to all with that model.

I highly recommend that any settings in the SM related to DNIe be left alone.

The moral of the story? Don't screw with stuff you don't understand. ;)

I had a 79 but took it back because I knew the Best Buy had stopped carrying them and officially moved to the 82.

Love the TV, went through 2 79's that had pretty major geometry problems, and this one is flawless. It does have "side stretchmarks" which are mostly only visible when you are very close to the TV.

HOWEVER, THIS IS MY BIGGEST PROBLEM PLEASE ASSIST!

The captions will not work at all on Composite 1 input. On the 79 we had no problems, but with the 82, using our Time Warner cable box in 1080i connected via composite cables in COMPOSITE 1, we get message that: "Not available in the current mode".

If you goto the setup menu, the option for captions (and v-chip) are grayed out.

I'm already hard on hearing, and I have an 8 month old, I NEED MY CAPTIONS!

I know I cannot get them on HD but any normal channel also refuses.

Do you have a digital cable box? for my Samsung 3082 I have a Scientific Atlanta 4200 HD from cablevision and need to set it through that. It is greyed out in the tv, the box overrides those settings and you use the digital box to control those features.

Your gut instinct was totally correct.

You may just need to trust yourself a bit more.

The way I handle store ads is "trust, but verify." I believe Reagan coined that phrase when it came to the mutual destruction of nuclear arms - the US and the Soviet Union. "Trust, but verify."

I own an R3080. Friend of mine just bought an S3082.

I was only over there for a few hours helping him set it up, but my overall impression is that Samsung made a lot of improvements with this year's model. In particular, the speed bump was gone - in fact, if anything they overcompensated, because I saw some slight upward bowing towards the outside edges.

The remote is better, the menu system has been tweaked, the OSD is more informative (actually tells you resolution etc), even the service menu is improved (14 differant test patterns). The default user and service menu settings were better - haven't run through Avia yet as he needs to get component cables for his dvd player - but I didn't see an immediate need to adjust the "standard" video settings or tweak the overscan.

Cons -
The 'Panorama' 4:3 stretch mode is gone
The only remaining S-video input is on the side
(which annoyed my friend re: attaching his vcr)
Power cord comes off the side rather than the back

Now I've got a case of the 'early-adopter' syndrome, sigh.

I am looking to purchase the 3082 within the next week.
CC has it for $899 - Target $699

I spoke to CC they will price match plust the 10% of difference.

Is it worth picking up the extended warranty for $100?

I am skeptical of Warranties of anykind but from what I have read there are some problems and I dont want to get stuck with a $700 box in my Living Room.

On an unrelated note I am also looking at the Panasonic SC-HT740 Theater Sys.
Any recommendations or suggestions to go w/ the 3082?

Thanks in advance.

It depends on what they're offrering and for how many years. $100 is very inexpensive, so I'd be concerned that it might not cover much. If you do get one, make sure it doesn't take effect until the existing built-in warranty expires, otherwise you're paying twice for the same coverage.

Wow! I just called Samsung tech support, and I asked the man on the other end if my tv TX-S3082WH supported 720p or if it just upscaled it to 1080i, cause the xbox 360 preffers 720p display and when I set the 360 to 720p it shows on the tv that it is displaying as 720p. He said "Hold one second while I check." He came back with the response that the tv does do 720p. I then asked again "So it doesn't upscale it to 1080i?" His response was "no". On the spec page it shows
http://www.samsung.com/Products/TV/SlimFitHDTV/TXS3082WHXXAA.asp?page=Specifications

Connections: RF Input 2 Rear
HDMI 2 Rear
Auto Sensing Component Inputs
(480i/480p/1080i/720p) 2 Rear
S-Video Inputs 1 Side
Fixed A/V input 1 rear
Rear A/V Inputs 1

If true then I can play the 360 in 720p and it wont be upscaled. Is he correct in this or is he full of beans.

My impression of 3080 VS. 3082: Thank you alll very much for your responses. I had the 3080 at home for a while ( 3 days).....then I went in to check out the 3082. While playing with the 3082 remote, I found that the 3082 had a function that allowed me to pull the screen down or raise it up in the ZOOM mode. The 3080 did not have this and it was an issue with me because in the Zoom 1 mode the tops of the heads were cut off slightly. That was annoying and so the 3082 seemed to be the one for me. H.,H. Greg was very cooperative on my returning the 3080 (after 3 days) and exchanging evenly for the 3082. When I got home I did see that there were other feature differences. The virtual Surround Sound, quicker channel setup, and some others. The shifting up and down in Zoom1 is very nice for me, but....everytime you change the channel you must reset the up or down location....to bad it just doesn't stick from channel to channel. Maybe that will be a downloadable update some day. Oh yes, I also found that the 3082 has no S-video on the back, instead it has 2 HDMIs. I liked the remote control for the 3080 better. I would like to get it back. Can one be purchased? I think, in my short time of playing with the 3082, that my comments are correct,. If anyone has additions or corrections, please chime in. Also, I did not find much (any) warping or geomertry problems with the 3082....but after you guys brought it to my attention I did see concavities with the 3080. At this time , I am very happy with the 3082 and am glad I exchanged...I did like the bottom speakers and narrowness of the 3080 though. Thanks again.

this is my first HDTV, so i'm kinda new to this, i've learned everything by reading these forums for the past 2 weeks researching... i just got it last night so its probably a lil premature to post on it but i couldn't wait

i was scared at first because of all the negative posts about the Sammy's bowing issues, but i haven't seen it at all so far, maybe my eyes aren't that good or i was so impressed by HD quality that i didn't notice, either way this TV is awesome so far, my only question is how important is a good antenna, cause i don't have digital cable, and won't be getting it soon, just regular cable and the broadcasted local channels, so far they have been ok but they lose their signal and "skip" or somethign every once in awhile, especially when i had my xbox running through the svideo... i'm guessing the tv has to process more or something with that running so the channels were messing up a lot more when i had the xbox on

also would it be worth my money to get a progessive scan dvd player, or just keep using my xbox with the svideo hook up? (its the original xbox with the advanced A/V pack)... o and does anyone know, will i have to do anything special to get the audio to output to the optical from the tv to my surround sound or will i have to turn any settings on cause i didn't see any on the tv menu, thanks

As far as 720p/1080i goes, 1080i only uses 540 scan lines to display the picture. If the gun in the tube only has 540 lines of resolution, then it is IMPOSSIBLE to natively display 720p, which requires 720 lines of resolution. It's still possible to do 480p, because the requred resolution is within the capabilities of the tube. Bottom line is that the majority of tube TVs have guns that can do 540 horizontal lines, period, which means that conversion would be reqiured for a 720p signal.

But, 720p support is REQUIRED because both Fox and ABC broadcast in 720p. NBC and CBS broadcast in 1080i. If Samsung wanted to lose their entire market share, then yes, they could remove 720p support. But even Samsung isn't THAT stupid.

As far as Samsung's Specs, they've always been inaccurate. Unless you have access to a service manual, there's no way to tell exactly what the set has in it or is capable of doing.

Depending on your location, a good antenna is VERY important. Personally, I live at the bottom of a hill with mature trees all around, and the antennas I receive signals from are 30 miles away on the OTHER side of the hill. I had to go with an antenna in my attic just to try and pull any signals down, and I'll have to go with a roof-mount if I want all of my channels to come in OTA reliably.

The reason your XBox hookup might be causing issues is just a simple interference issue. It doesn't have as much to do with the XBox being on SVideo as it does with the XBox being on and running near the TV. If you have antenna issues, then it's a good idea to move the antenna higher up (if you're in a house), and away from other electronic deivces.

FWIW, even with my amplified antenna, because my house is so old, every time I turn off a light switch in the house, if I'm watching OTA, there's a flicker in the signal. That's the nature of antennas, unfortunately... they can be very susceptible to outside interference.

My recommendation would be to go to the "Local HDTV Reception" forum and ifnd your city/market, and find out what other people have found for antenna recommendations in the area.

also would it be worth my money to get a progessive scan dvd player, or just keep using my xbox with the svideo hook up? (its the original xbox with the advanced A/V pack)...
Get the component cables for your XBox. You'll adore the upgrade in picture quality, since a lot of the original XBox games are in 16:9 and progressive scan. For $11-16, you can totally change your gaming experience with the cables.

will i have to do anything special to get the audio to output to the optical from the tv to my surround sound or will i have to turn any settings on cause i didn't see any on the tv menu, thanks
Unless Samsung changed something from the P2670, the optical out will only send a signal if you've tuned a channel that has a digital signal on it. (Actually, that's the way most of the HDTVs work). Otherwise, analog audio goes out through the L/R coax outputs.

Unfortunately, the way my old Sammy worked, the optical out was "always on", even though it wasn't always outputting a signal, so my auto-sensing receiver would never switch to analog. I had to manually switch back and forth to get the correct audio signal depending on what channel I was on. Hopefully they changed this on the later models. I'll find out when my S3082 shows up today or monday.

Changing the position of the image in a zoom mode will probably affect other modes as well. You might consider getting a calibration dvd like Avia and adjust your set for overscan in the service menu - this may help with the Zoom mode as well. If you go into the SM, record all values before adjusting anything so you can at least return to default settings.

Thank you SC. Adjusting ZOOM1 is only real inconvenient when watching a TV program....then everytime I surf the channels have to readjust. Usually when I'm watching a movie on DVD I am there for the duration of the movie. so that I only set it once and that's it. Do some of the SM categories adjust the locations of tops and bottoms? 1. I plugged my 360 into my 3082WH. Once I got into the a LIVE game I started getting this rainbow colored graininess accumilating on the screen. I then proceeded to exit the game and reboot the 360 and this situation has not occurred since. Should I be worried or is some bug that will resurface occasionally in the future?

2. I had my 360 hooked up using 1080i, I noticed that in game performance dropped. In LIVE games of COD2 precision aiming was a lot slower, and the FPS seemed to drop. I played around with it and then switched to 720, the game's performace picked up a little but there is still some lagging issues. Playing on my analog TV seemed crisper in terms of gameplay, is this some type of placebo effect or are there some performance issues here that I should look into since hooking up my 360 to my Samsung?

Not sure I understand.

By locations do you mean horizontal position or how far you can open-up the picture in the vertical mode?

I didn't do this on my Samsung set, but on my Sony I used SM settings VSIZ and VPOS to adjust mine, for overscan, but I understand there's another, better approach to this. Hopefully someone else will chime in here on this.

Here is a interesting reply I got from an xbox 360 post.

http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-7610_7-5084364-8.html

Native resolution: The physical structure of some types of displays, including LCDs and plasma panels, defines how many pixels can be displayed at once. The display produces the sharpest picture when used at its so-called native resolution. Other types of displays, such as CRTs, create pixels independently of the physical structure of their screens and do not have a native resolution. As a result, a CRT's image quality is generally the same across a range of resolutions.

After going through several crappy 3079's I finally got my hands on a 3082. I love it. Aside from my captions issue (which is relatively minor) there are no geometry or tube issues.

I have noticed one slightly annoyoing thing on the left side of the screen.

There is DEFINITELY some blue bleed on the left side of the screen near the edges.

It appears almost as if it is a convergence issue as seen in an RPTV.

Can this be resolved in the SM? (if so which values?) Or because it's tube does that mean it's there for good?

Thanks!

justsc

Blue Bleed

The first thing I'd do is lower the contrast and see if there's any improvement.

You might also want to examine overscan in the SM. For this you need a calibration dvd like Avia. Since I never had to adjust for overscan on my Samsung set, I don't recall the actual setting in the SM. With the dvd on and with the test pattern for overscan on, go into the SM and see if youcan get it to around 5%. This may get rid of the blue bleed.

Can others chime in here with the setting for adjusting Overscan?

"By locations do you mean horizontal position or how far you can open-up the picture in the vertical mode"

JustSC, by positions I mean. (hope I can explain this) ....since on my Zoom 1 the tips of the heads are cut off, so it would be nice if the default position for Zoom 1 was in a slightly lower position , thus eliminating the need to "move" the picture downward evertime I chang the channel and/or return to the original channel again. It is kind of inconvenient everytime I surf etc. I can deal with it that way if going to the SM and changing things messses up other picture modes. Thank you.

On some sets each input is unique and making adjustments, even in the SM, affects only that input (e.g. cable, dvd, etc). Some sets even have unique settings for each resolution on each input.

But you are working to adjust the height one picture mode without affecting the others, right? Even within the same input I assume. I'm not certain, but I believe that adjusting the Zoom1 picture mode for height, may well affect other picture modes too. The only way to know for sure is "Trial and "Error, I guess. Just be sure to record the default values so you can trturn to them if things don't work out.

Good Luck and please let us know what you learn. ;)

I see that "deadzone" has posted some numbers for his set, and some are specific for overscan, which involves picture height and size. Go to Post #3 in the thread below and look at his section on "Deflection." Please note that he's not necessarily trying to solve your exact problem, but this must be the area where you can make the changes you're looking to make.

If you have Netflix you can rent it from there, or check and see if a local video rental store has it.

I know this sounds retarded, but i bought this TV, it had bowing issues, and whatnot, but i fixed it right up in the service menu no problem, and let me tell you, it looks amazing playing suikoden II hehehe, Im playing other games too, i just thought id mention this one cuz its hella old heheh.

Killbot,

Do you happen to remember which values you changed in the deflection menu to get rid of the bowing. I am still having some slight problems with it. Thanks alot.

i have this set from the bb xbox360 bundle, and i downloaded the service manual (20050708154431015_S62A-aadj-3.pdf to be exact).

are the values listed the ones they set at the factory for all sets, i.e. this is what my set come to me set to? thanks

my geometry is great, so i can post my settings, if anyone wants, but some of the color issues need to be adressed.

Orntar,

I also picked up the combo from bb, would it be possible to take a look at your deflection settings to see maybe where mine is different. Also do you have it set up to an HD cable box or regular cable. Thanks.

The confusion lies with Samsung's CSRs and their Data Sheets. ALL crt HD sets have a native scanning rate of 1080i.

Well I can confirm that these numbers won't work on every TV. I tried them on my 3082, and the result was horrible. I went back to the factory preset numbers, and then just adjusted the UP_COR and the L_COR, and this got rid of the corner flaring my TV had. The sides of the image in 4:3 mode are still a little wavy and not perfectly straight, but I am pretty happy with the way it is now. MUCH improved!

Hello Everyone,
1st time poster, long time lurker. I recentley purchased the Samsung 30" Slimfit HDTV (TXS3082W) last week at Best Buy, for the HD Adventure Deal and needed some help with this set. I am new to HD but am somewhat familiar with TV technology so bear with me. I picked this set up last monday, set it up last wens to my DVD player, 360 etc. Anyways, I callibrated the settings from out-of-the-box(Dynamic and all) using the THX test on SW:EPIII dvd, and thought that my picture looked great. However 3 hrs into using the set, while playing Call Of Duty 2 on the 360, the pic started to break up and then became staticy. I thought maybe it was loose cables, no luck. I turned it off/on, unplugged and even waited till next day, no luck, the screen was still distorted (think of the static when you first put on a VHS, the "snowy" effect all over). I switched through the inputs and the static was evident on all of them, so I knew that there was something wrong with the TV. I came on the boards and discovered that this tv is prone to burn in, especially with the out-of-the-box settings (Dynamic, High Contrast, etc.). I decided that I would change the settings just so I wouldnt risk further damage, and the static dissapeared! Now(a week later), the pic looks good, and I havent had any problems with static. I have noticed however that on either side of the tv, there a strips of "obvious" pixels, meaning the stand out from the rest of the tv. My bro and friends cant see them but I can DEFINATLEY spot them in certain areas. Now my question is this, What should I do??? The tv is still good under is 30 day waranty (and I also got the 4yr) so I could take it back can pick up a new one...but I am also aware of the various "other" problems (Geometry, bowing, etc.) people seem to be having with this tv, and since I cant see any problems with my set other then the pixels, I think my set is ok. I could take it back and get a set with a whole new set of problems. So maybe you guys could help me out...
1) What are these "obvious" pixels im seeing??? Is it just from having my initial contrast settings to high, which caused burn-in??? Is there a way to fix this problem???
2) Why is the tv prone to burn-in in the 1st place, its a tube-tv. I though only Plasmas and DLP could have burn-in.
3) My set also makes a quick "zapping" sound when I turn it on. It doesnt happen all the time and I am assuming its just the set warming up.

I apologize for my long post and my questions that probably are obvious to answer. I have been surfing this board for days and havent seemed to find the answers to my problems. Thank you ALL in advance.
Ian

I had the 3082 . I cannot actually help you with your problem b ut I can tell you that after I had it for only 3 days ( and I might add...I really liked the picture etc) ...well...all of a sudden while watching it....no picture and no sound. I tryied all the trouble shooting and the universal reset....but still no pic and no sound.... It was my 1st Samsung so I really was bummed out and lost confidence in the reliability of Samsung.Again, I REALLY liked the TV but it blew. Ok...I took it back and got the 30 " Toshiba....which I did NOT liike...[poor pic and poor sound...I couldn't keep that one. So, I am returning the Toshiba to HH GREGG (who are being VERY understanding and tolerant) . I am going to try the Samsung 3082 again...thinking it was just a fluke and couldn't happen again. However, after hearing your story, Ian, I once again feel a little less confident with going back the the 3082. I am looking at the Sony 34 970 as a possibility too....but I really like the Samsung's built in HD tuner and also another ant input . Your comment about the 3082 really bothers me. Are there any 3082 owners out there who can tell me they have not had any probs with their 3082???? I am losing confidence again. Thank you.

Im sorry Ikabob, I didnt mean to scare you!!! Although I have a few issues with my Samsung, I still do like it for what it is. The "pixel" problem I am having isnt that bad, it just bugs me because I know its there, although everyone else who watches the tv thinks im crazy!!! The picture quality and features of the Samsung are great, and I am going to keep it for the time being. Good luck with your choice.

Ian, Thanks for your response. I understand 100% what you are saying. There are little things that bug me about stuff that nobody can understand. Yes, if there were a small pixel problems. I can see where it would bother me too and no one else. I am going to give the 3082 a chance. Like I said , I really did like it while it was functional. I still would like others to chime in if they have the 3082 and are experiencing no problems. Thanks again Ian. Ron

I am so sorry you're being put through this mess. I think you're going about it the best way. Since your reseller is so good, do you think they would allow you to open the box in the store before taking it home to make sure it's OK? At least you could try to determine if it's a lemon and save yourself the grief of taking it home and having to return yet another set. Just a thought.

The "pixel" issue is "the way it is." Every Samsung set I've ever seen has it, as does my 34" Sony set, to a lesser degree. The edges of the tube don't get scanned as directly as as at the center and this results in some loss of focus and an appearance of larger pixels on the sides. I've got used to it very quickly.

Cheers! ;)

As I said earlier, the "pixel" thing isnt so bad, I dont see it all the time, and my family NEVER sees it, but I cant help but look on the sides every once in awhile while im watching tv or playing a game to see if its there. Its annoying but Im hoping that I will just ignore it that fact that its there in the first place. No I need to properly calibrate it, right now im on Custom setting, 50 contrast, 68 Brightness, 45 Sharpness, 35 Color, 50/50 tint. Do these sound about right??? From your settings and your question I'm going to guess you're watching analog or digital material but not HD. Correct?

Yep - this is the right place for questions like yours. Never appologize for your questions. ;) They are good ones and others will learn from the answers.

The reason I guessed what you were watching is because you wouldn't be able to tolerate such high settings if the material was HD.

You are correct that it needs calibration and you've done the right thing by ordering Avia. That's really the only way to get optimal settings and protect your investment at the same time.

The only setting that poses a risk to your set is Contrast. Set too high, Contrast can cause burn-in and shorten the life of the phosphors. A value of 50 is not going to harm the set, unless you have static images up for long periods of time (hours). So long as the scenes are changing you're OK. The other burn-in risk is if you are watching material with bars on the sides or top & bottom too much, which can burn-in dark areas where the bars go.

Non-HD signals need more Contrast, Brightness, Color and Sharpness to look decent, so what you're doing isn't something bizarre. Once you get it calibrated (soon hopefully) you'll like things much more.

You're doing a good job! ;)

one was i got some weird lines when using my xbox, but that went away after a couple days, not sure what it was all about

the other is a clicking noise when turning on the tv, it continues to click for about 5-10 seconds sometime before stopping, everything seems to be ok, but i'm not sure... plus after reading these posts about contrast, i'm guessing i should change mine from the Dynamic default of 100 even though i kind of like it ... also is it normal for commercials to "resize" on HD and only be about half the screen ... i only have OTA HD and i was watching the NBA Finals and the commercials are smaller than the game... same thing happens to me when i'm playing NBA Live 2006 on Xbox (with component cables and all the HD settings enabled on the Xbox) the menu screen and title screens are sized smaller but then the "gameplay" takes up the whole screen and looks just fine... thanks for everyone's help

Ikabob!

Got the new one! Congrats.

About power - since your last one died the way it did, I would strongly recommend you get some kind of line conditioner, or at the least a very good surge supressor. You need to be able to protect for dropouts in power as well as spikes. Have you ever measured your incoming electricity to see if it's consistent?

Power Line Conditioners can be expensive - sometimes $300 or more. A good surge supressor can run you over $100, but it's very good insurance. You might post a new question about this apart from any other threads.

Calibration dvd - I ordered my copy of Avia from Amazon.com. Real easy. But remember, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. A new HD set can always benefit from a basic calibration like Avia can provide. Let it get 100 hours of viewing before calibrating. Be sure to get the tv off of Dynamic and on to something like Custom.

I am sooo happy for you - let's hope this one is a keeper.

I'm off for a 4 week vacation. I hope to remain online, but if I disappear you'll know why.

Cheers! ;)

Contrast at 100 will eventually ruin your tv. It'll dramatically shorten the lifetime of the phosphors and cause burn-in of any images left static for any length of time. It's best to use Custom and calibrate that with Avia.

It is totally normal for the screen to re-size for commercials. Sometimes there's even re-sizing going on when a sports even isn't using all HD cameras. Even if they're all widescreen, you can periodically see a real loss of resolution when they drop to widescreen 480p momentarily. These broadcasters haven't fully invested in HD yet.

Great advice! Thank you. I will keep the Picture mode off of Dynamic....I hope the rest of the family will remember too. I expect to totally forget about work and Silicon Valley. But I have no intentio of forgetting about AVS. To me, this is very relaxing. I really hope the wireless DSL is working when I get there.

Keep in mind that if you venture into the SM, when you re-power up the tv it'll default to Dynamic, along with some Audio settings I believe. So you'll want to be sure to go back to Custom after every SM episode.

I doubt there's an SM setting to make the shift down the default.

Guys, i just seen this model in store(3082) and i have a Samung 27" HDTV from 03', but Samsung seems to have improved something with it's tube, because this set looked nearly as good as the XBR970 sitting next to it.

I know it was rated at only 800 horizontal lines across, but it looks like a 1000 line set.

Now, i have a good 1st HDTV as it's a Sony 34" XBR960 (1400 lines across), and nothing under 40" can touch this set, but if i did not have this set, i may well have choosen this Samsung over the XBR970 and saved $400, because the PQ comes pretty close to it.

I was very impressed with this Samsung model, and i'm wondering what did Samsung improve on here, because it seems the specs have not changed from the 03' models.

(btw: i'm looking for a widescreen 2nd HDTV, so that's why i was looking at this model)

Well I just picked up my S3082.

Question: last night I plugged in my DVD player and tried a DVD the picture and the audio were fine. However when I would put music CDs into the DVD player to play through the TV, the audio was horrible! It was extremely tinny as though I were playing loud music through tiny $1 speakers.

I know the speakers are fine since they play everything else without any issues. I know the DVD player is fine for music since I've been doing it for quite some time through the same player on my other TVs. I had the volume turned down and it was still extremely distorted - I couldn't even understand the words. Any advice from anyone on what to do to remedy this?

Thanks

:) Hey, Guys, I am the proud new owner of this sammy and currently i love it!

Just set it up yesterday. Read thru all your posts today. Was generally pleased that i had done well w/this puppy. I had already turned down the contrast and color based on what the manual [when i decided to read it] said about the 15% per week of viewing pics with black edges.

Am really impressed with the pics of the programs that actually broadcast in hi def. Between my husband and me, i am the tv junky (the one that must control the remote). Luckily he doesn't care.

The tv was pretty easy to set up and all. I, too, am a ps2 person. I notice that many of you are 360 fans. I know it's supposed to hv a better res than the sony.

Thanks for the info on the service menu. I will take care (and notes on the defaults) if i change anything.

After all those words i do hv a question: somewhere i told it that the volume level should be 10. I don't seem to be able to find that screen again. I didn't look too very closely at the sm. It wasn't in the sm that i originally saw it, 'cuz that i found out about from this thread. But i don't think it was there when i looked in checking briefly.

Does anyone know where it may be so that i can up that number a bit. I hv two guys watching this thing that do not want know too much more than "on" and "off".

Thanks (sorry for the long post).

Hi All,

To follow up, as a new owner of this set, I'm seeing that is is best to turn it off of Dynamic mode. When i put it in custom mode, what would you guys recommend the settings be (keeping in mind I use the TV for mostly analog cable channels, the occasional DVD movie and NO video gaming).

Many thanks,

It's clear that the tv can deliver good sound, as you explained. It's clear that the player has also worked well for you. The TV can't distinguish between dvd versus cd, and will only "do what it's told to do." So, the problem is most likely in the set-up of the player as it pertains to the connection with this tv.

The optimal set-up is to run all audio through an AV receiver.

Hello all,
I am a newbie here and a complete newbie to HDTVs. I'm getting married this summer and looking to purchase a new TV for our home, but I do have a limited budget. I'd really like to go 42" but I saw the Samsung TXS3082W 30" today and really liked the price, and thought it looked great in the store. But after reading some posts I am kinda skeptical as to if it is a good choice. Like I said I am totally new to HD but definitely want a good one. I love movies and have a few select TV shows, and I may play some occassional Nintendo Wii in the future, no 360 or PS3. I plan to get our cable HD package and eventually an HD-DVD player. I will probably be replacing this TV with a 40" to 50" within a year or so...but I still want something good until that time comes. Whats your opinion? Would this be a good primary HDTV solution for my home for a first time HDTV buyer on a budget? Would its geometry/lack of native 720p resolution/ etc, etc. problems be a real issue for movies and tv? Any opinions greatly appreciated! I know many of you use this in your bedrooms but this would be in my living room! I want quality but cant afford the best, this one almost seems too cheap when compared to others!

justsc
06-23-06, 01:25 AM
This would be a perfect first time HDTV.

Your viewing set-up will dictate if it is the right choice. For a 30" widescreen set you should be sitting no more than 6-8 feet back to appreciate the higher resolution. Any further back and you might as well get an analog tv. Closer would be better. I have a 34" widescreen HD set in my master bedroom and we sit 5 feet back. Just perfect. If possible, try to have seating as close as 5 feet.

Why trade this in when you get the new one? This would make a great second HD set for the bedroom, computer room or den.

Thanks for the quick reply! The viewing distance is something I was worried about, but I think I'll be ok. Dont have a house yet either but most of the ones we've looked at I can see getting a good viewing distance in the living rooms. And I'd definitely still keep the TV after replacing, like you said probably the bed room!

I think I've decided to get this TV tomorrow. I've heard some bad reviews but I've heard many good reviews. And it looks great to me in the stores compared to its competitors and the price is very attractive.
I'm not sure if this is the place to ask, but could anybody recommend required add-ons such as cabling, etc. What do I need to get the best experience out of this TV?
Like I said before I'm very new to this.
I'm also looking to buy a good DVD player (not HD) that is affordable. Any suggestions? Thanks!

When I first turned on the tv it was extremely bright, so much that it hurt my eyes whenever the picture shifted from dark to light. I eventually used a finding nemo THX certified DVD to adjust the picture to the optimal settings (well, until I receive my DV Essentials DVD).

I can say that after changing the custom settings of the picture everything looks so much better, the 360, dvd's, and even basic cable programming looks ok.

It took me a while to realize that every source (component, s-video, hdmi, a/v, and antenna) has its own picture default (dynamic) and you have to change the setting for all of them. I kind of like this because I prefer to play my 360 games in a slightly brighter mode than when I watch DVD's.

The only problems I have encountered is a slight tilt issue that I solved with the built in tilt option in the menu, and also there is the warped black bars that sometimes become noticable when commercials shift the view from 16:9 to 3:4. This I could probably fix throught the Service Menu

Also when testing the display with the nemo dvd, when I got the mode where it displayed the rectangle with a circle in the middle to determine if I had a perfectly centered Widescreen display, the bottom of the rectangle was cut off and a little was missing from the left too. That I could probably fix with the SM too, but I have no idea which option to change when I'm in the SM.

One last problem I have with this tv is that when I play my regular Xbox it has a delay (Almost like a slight lag issue), but the 360 works fine. It was hooked up throught S-video, then I tried the standard a/v cables but it still had the delay. And yes it is a delay, I've been playing Halo for almost 5 years now and can tell when something is off, thats probably the only game I play on my old Xbox--Also I choose not to play it on the 360 because the control's just don't feel the same and I like using the Duke Controller. Has anyone had any delay problems with their xbox?

If I could manage to get my xbox to play without any problems, then this tv would be perfect (for my needs anyway).

Thats right! A TV is one thing we dont have and I want to get that cost out of the way because after we do buy a house, I may not have any money left to get a TV! :)

Flamenmars, I'm glad to see that you like the TV aside from a few minor issues. I think I'm getting one today! Hopefully it will satisfy me for at least a year.

Nice write-up!

And welcome to AVS. ;)

You might try component cables between the Xbox and the tv. These newer consoles and games require higher bandwidth interfaces than composite or S-Video to work best. Your best chance to mitigate latency is the highest bandwidth cabling the two devices offer. the only interface better than component cables is a digital interface like HDMI.

Well, after a nightmare with the 30 inch Insignia HDTV WHICH HAD A HORRIBLE PICTURE, not enough component outlets, no hdmi, and no 720p i decided to take it back to the store and shell out a couple hundred more dollars for a quality set. After browsing this forum for a few days I chose this tv over the sony xbr970 simply because of the $300 price difference. I couldn't be happier with my decision! I too used the Finding Nemo DVD to calibrate the picture and it worked really well. It already had a great picture but after that it made seem like it was a whole different tv. The picture is GREAT.

The only complaint I have/had was that every few minutes i began to notice a weird annoying noise coming from it. But i gave it a good slap and havent heard it since (knock on wood). But yea, this tv is perfect. Looks great on Xbox 360 and has no blurring at all. Feels good to know I bought a quality product.....

Good for you!

It does feel good when you make the right decision.

Be careful with the calibrators like those on Finding Nemo. These calibrators are for that specific movie only. Of course, the settings might look good for other material as well, but it's much better to invest in a pro calibration dvd like Avia and give your tv a proper calibration.

Good Luck with your new set!

I was all set to purchase this set. But the more I looked at it at different stores, the more I knew I wouldn't be satisfied with it.

When watching a SD with the side pillars, the pillars were never straight. On two of the sets, the pillars slanted in at the top on both sides. Other various things bothered me on individual sets.

I really wanted the 34" Sony, but it just won't fit on our corner entertainment unit. Then I was excited when I found the 3082, since it would just barely fit in the corner. But the quality is just lacking. It can have a great picture, but I don't want to worry about the calibration, possible service calls, ets. It really seems hit-or-miss on getting a problem-free 3082.

I think we just might settle for a SD Sony until the flat panel TV's improve over the next couple of years.

I wish all 3082 owners luck with their TV's.

Hi - Just joined up to thank you all for the great help - I've been lurking here for a couple of weeks since my dearly beloved old Panny 27" started acting up after 15 years. The ever changing newer technologies are all quite intimidating to a newbie, and having a source like this forum (with both biased and unbiased posts!) really, really helped. To summarize a bit, and perhaps to give some others help in their decision making for a new TV, my requirements were:

a) mostly watch ota TV and 2 or 3 rental DVDs a week, no gaming
b) live WAY out in the fringe area 60-90 miles from Boston and other stations
c) no hope of ever getting cable and too many trees to cut down for satellite reception
d) viewing room fairly small and not too bright, with a viewing distance of 6'-7'
e) wanted to upgrade a bit in size but not too much, 36" wide base limitation
f) skeptical that I could receive any ota digital signals where I live, but did get good analog reception previously with my fixed direction roof top antenna, so who knew?
g) champagne tastes on a beer budget

Final decision, after weeks of research on this forum and in store comparisons?
Samsung 3082. Bought it three days ago, no buyer's remorse at all so far. Love it and NO noticeable problems (bowing, tilt, etc) - but remember, I've been used to a very old 27" for years (so we'll see what I can see!), and best of all I get nearly 30 digital stations out of the Boston area now with 4 or 5 of them being hit or miss. all this on an old Winegard antenna w/o any tweaking!! PBS HDTV alone is worth the upgrade! But I'm amazed that I got any! Regular analog stations are at best ok, not quite as good a tuner, I suspect, as my old Panny. Perhaps some antenna tweaking or eventual upgrade will help (??). But frankly suspect my viewing of analog broadcasts will be very limited now that I can get most all network shows in digital.

Other options considered were 32" LG (great price!) and Samsung LCDs, and 37"-42" Panny plasmas (HDTV and EDTV), but just couldn't justify the 2 to 3 times extra cost not knowing if I could get any good ota digital reception without major antenna upgrades. So I looked at Sony non-HDTV, but it just didn't make sense not to get a 16:9 HDTV given the future of broadcast TV (really do't want to keep upgrading every few years), and the Sony 34" was just too huge & bulky. Plus, I personally find Sony's silver cabinent off-putting and their pic a bit washed out - I prefer a darker image w/good blacks and whites and just couldn't adjust the Sonys in the store to look as good as this Samsung (and I liked it's black surround).

For set-up, I concur with the previous posters - get into the Custom picture setting (for each input used!) and adjust each separately to your own preference - initially, I have all controls to half way (50) except color which I lowered to 40. Really despise the bright blooming over saturated color & high contrast seen on the Dynamic picture setting. Played a lot with this in the store to make sure how it worked before purchase.

I highly recomend this TV as a simple and cost effective upgrade from a 24" or 27" TV to try out HDTV in a smallish room. This Samsung is fairly elegant and unobtrusive so it fits in nicely with my HiFi components on a homebuilt unit. And I feel thankful that this set performs flawlessly out of the box - apparently this is somewhat a matter of luck or else Samsung's quality control has improved lately from what I've read of a few other's experiences with this and previous models.

Went to CC for the final purchase as they had it in stock at a really decent discount (btw - it's just gone down even more this week!! Back to the store later for a refund! What could be better?). Suprisingly, CC's assistant sales managers' (the guys in the black shirts) knowledge, helpfulness and patience was outstanding (perhaps unusual (?) - maybe because our CC in Keene NH is fairly new and they're hired some top notch people).

I plan on getting the AVIA disc to calibrate this set shortly based on recomendations on this site, but can't believe it will change an already great picture that much (??). We'll see.

Again, thank you all for sharing your wisdom and experiences - it was invaluable (and quite interesting)! Although it took a number of late, sleepless nights and resulting blurry vision to read through all pertinent info in the various threads, it was well worth it!

Hi there all.
Thank you very much for input on this thread. (Most of it is over my head) Here is a question from an obvious novice. I just got the "82" Slim fit Widescreen and my question is regarding the "widescreen". If a program isn't available in HD then I get the borders on both sides and am noth taking advantage of the full screen. However, if I change the picture size to "stretch" via my cable the images are quite distorted. Is there a way to watch non-HD programs on the entire screen without high levels of distortion. Sorry for the basic question but if I figure you all may have some good recommendations. Thanks again!!!

I thought the same thing before I calibrated my Samsung set. The results were surprisingly significant. It looked so much better that I watched all my favorite dvds again.

It's very important to follow the disc's lead and adjust the settings exactly as recommended. Don't let the resulting values scare you, as sometimes when following the disc the new numbers may seem way off from what you believe is correct. Let the disc and test patterns determine what's right. Then see what you think. I believe you may be pleasantly surprised. YMMV.

Many of these stretch modes can leave you disappointed. On my Sony I really don't like the stretch modes. Other Sony owners can live with the Wide Stretch mode. I really prefer watching 4:3 shows in a 4:3 window, and do so most of the time. The risk is burn-in, where too much viewing with only parts of the screen illuminated can result in large areas being brighter or more dim than others. It's best to use the stretch modes or limit your 4:3 viewing time to no more than 15-20%.

A question somewhat along the same lines. When I first set up the TV I was using component cables running from the HD cable box. I had it set up in the 16:9 mode for SD programs and the slight stretching did not bother me. Today I received an HDMI cable to run from the cable box so that I could free up the two component slots. However now when I select the 16:9 option for regular cable it only offers a 4:3 screen. I was curious if it was possible to stretch it to reach the full widescreen view or is this a limitation due to the HDMI cable?

Also a couple of other quick notes. Many of you probably know this already but you can find HDMI cables for a tenth of the cost of those ones a Circuit City. They might be slightly lacking in the quality of the cable but I haven't noticed a loss of picture quality on the HD or regular programming, only that one issue with the image not stretching to the full width.

In response to the xbox lagging question, I have mine hooked up through some HD component cables and have experienced the same problem. I've been getting adequate performace by selecting the 420p and 720p options and leaving the 1080i deactivated but there has still been a slight lag.

Flamenmars
06-28-06, 11:53 AM
I got my component cables a few days ago and enabled 480p, 720p, and 1080i throught the xbox dashboard and I too can still detect a slight bit of latency while playing Halo.

The latency decreased dramatically compared to using the s-video cables, but I guess I'm going to have to live with the slight latency issue. O'well I'll always have my 32" SDTV to play on.

O yea, il re, I try disabling some of the resolutions and only enabling 720p to see if that helps any. If I find any solution I post them as soon as I can.

I find that when using the HDMI interface the image received gets "fixed," and cannot be stretched. The only set I'm aware of that offers this flexibility when using a digital interface is the Sony KD-34XBR960, and the other Sony models using the super fine pitch tube.

I have the Comcast (Motorola) DCT-6412 cable box, and I can use either HDMI or component cables (I prefer component cables as the PQ is actually better that way and it frees up the HDMi port on the tv). My stb allows me to set incoming analog material or non-HD digital to either 480p or 480i. If I select 480p then I have no flexibility, but if I set it at 480i then I can set the stretch mode to any of the offered formats. This is true for both component cables and HDMI.

Well so much for playing Halo on my new HD, the lag still bugs me and I was seriously getting owned because of it.

I had to switch and now play Halo on my SD but at least the 360 doesn't give me any issues with lag on the Samsung.

Any Calibration you can find online (ebay, amazon, etc) or you may also be able to find them at stores like Best Buy or Circuit City.

Does anyone else notice any ghosting (I think thats what you call it) on their systems. I notice this in dark areas while in playing oblivion and walking around in places such as the arena and dungeons. While running I notice a green colored stream being left behind. For example, if I'm running passed a torch I can see the green stream being left behind as I continue running. Is this a problem with most HD sets and can it be minimized?

JungleJim

This might be an ignorant question, but I've been reading about the "lag time" concerning video games.

We do not play video games. But we will want to watch dvd movies on it.

Question:
If I would run the sound from the dvd player to my stereo and the video to the Samsung, is there any lag between the sound and video on the Samsung? I could not stand the video and sound not being synchronized.

I'd appreciate any first hand experience.

Thank you.

Jungle Jim,

There's no need to worry. Audio/Video sync is not an issue, the issue is with the xbox and playing games. I watch DVDs Through my 360 and Samsung and I do not have any issues with it. There's no problem with DVD playback, the only problem is a slight latency issue while playing games through a regular xbox even while hook up through component cables.

greenfrogthing77

hmm i don't have latency issues, but what about my problem with some digital channels being cut off at the bottom?

Flamenmars
07-06-06, 01:46 PM
greenfrogthing77,

I had the same issue with it cutting off part of the picture on the left side and bottom of the screen. I fixed it using the Samsung's service menu. I made some slight adjustments and fixed the problem in a few minutes.

WARNING!--Before making any changes make sure you write down every setting number in case something goes wrong. (There is a reset option in my service menu but that does not reset your service menu settings, it only resets your other normal settings). Also simply accessing the service menu will reset all your picture settings, so if you have calibrated your TV write those setting's down as well (Contrast, Brightness...etc).

To access the service menu - Turn OFF Tv
- Press MUTE then 182
- Turn ON Tv

It will take a few seconds for the menu to show up. The settings you are too change are in "Deflection".

First get your Tv on a screen that doesn't change, such as a dvd menu, a game etc. I put in my Avia DVD and went into a screen adjustment area, or you could just use any THX DVD and go into their picture calibrating menu and put it on the widescreen and 4:3 adjustment screen.

Once you do that just change some of the numbers in the AMP and SHIFT and/or any of the LIN settings that fit the area thats being cut off.

I wouldn't recomment changing any of the other settings, I tried and just completely screwed up the display--Good thing I wrote down the default settings.

Once you think your happy with the settings change the input or channel to verify it looks good on other inputs/channels. Then your done.

Exit the service menu and set your other (normal) settings and picture setting (contrast, brightness) to what you had before.

Hope That Helps--Make sure to write down the default factory service menu settings!

Final Advice: If this solution does not help you are going to have to play around with the rest of the deflection settings yourself until you familiarize yourself with them well enought to adjust the screen to the perfect setting. (Thats what I had to do when I noticed that the HUD in GRAW was almost completely missing--It is still a little cut off in the corners but looks much better, isn't distracting, and the settings work fine with other inputs/channels)

could the cut-offs be do to being in the Zoom 1 mode? Happens to me too and I have to shift down or up depending upon whether I'm watching "Who wants to be a millionaire" or the news. My bone to pick is that everytime I change the channel I have to RESHIFT and that becomes a real inconvenience.

Yes that is the Avia DVD, and Its used for Calibrating a Home Theather TV and Speaker System to the quality standards that movies are supposed to be viewed and heard. Calibrating the picture is done through the standard picture mode in the menu using the settings such as Contrast, Brightness, Sharpnesss...etc. Yes it works with the service menu and also the basic controls. Also the DVD should work with any tv and any DVD player.

Hi all,

First time poster, long time reader.

Thanks to all who have posted info on this set. My wife and I are currently thinking of purchasing the 3082 as a replacement for an 18 year old 25 inch bedroom tv that is finally dying. I understand that some have the bowing and some don't (Or just don't see it), and I'll be checking that out closely if we do purchase this tv.

My question concerns the closed captioning functionality. According to circuit city's website (And their never wrong), this set will not display closed captioning on mute, but the 27 inch 4:3 (TXS-2782H) says that it will display captions on mute. Can anybody confirm if the 3082W will also do captioning on mute? We have this feature on our Sanyo set in the living room and its a handy feature to have when the phone rings. Not an absolute deal breaker if it is not there, but figured I'd ask. The only time I've seen this set in the store, they couldn't find the remote, so I had no way of trying it out.

Thanks in advance.

kosekjm,

Yes the Captions still work on Mute, but when muted a "mute" box display pops up and makes the first few words in the caption line hard to read (until they move up), although there is an option that will allow you to change the opacity of all the display's and menu, and you can also change the color and font size of the caption to make them easier to read.

Hi. I've been reading the forums for a long time, but finally have a question to post. I've had my 3082 for a few weeks now and have mostly been very happy with it. I have had the problem with the bottom of the pictures being cut off, but I think I'm confident enough with what I've read here to try and fix that. My question is something probably geometry related. When watching an HD channel that is broadcasting a non-HD picture (ie- watching the news) the black bars on the sides are uneven. The bar on the right side seems even, but on the left side it is slanted (it is thinner at the bottom than at the top). Any ideas as to what might be causing this or what settings I would use in the SM to fix it? I find it odd that it only seems to affect one side of the screen. I never notice any distortion at any other time, but that could just be because I have no reference point usually. I appreciate any help. Thanks.

Thanks.
I had to fix this on my '02 Samsung 27" set. But my SM is very different from what is in use now. It was in a deflection subheading and had to do with a trapezoid adjustment.

silentdante,

There are some options in the Service Menu that will probably fix that, BOW is something you could try and also ANGLE. If its that uneven, then maybe you should use the SHIFT to move the screen more to the right. (Note: Theirs a Veritcal Shift and a Horizontal Shift)

Sometimes the bars seem uneven on mine too but only during certain commercials so I don't think its a problem with the tv, rather a problem with the video being displayed.

Make sure to write down the default numbers before you change anything!!!!!

where do you get the Avia disc and how do you use it. Thanks.
I did a google search for the Avia disk - you'll find a number of reputable sources. I just got mine yesterday - very quick service and decent price from amazon. Just ran it with my new 30" Samsung and It is VERY self explanatory - just pop it in your DVD player - leads you thru EVERYTHING you might want to know about home theater and setting one up, or you can just skip to the video calibration chapter. But give yourself some time with it. I tried it real quick as I only had about a half hour and I think I rushed it a bit, so will go back some evening and try it again when I have more time and during my regular viewing hours so background lighting will be consistent (as they recommend on the disc). Also got the DVE disc but haven't given it a try yet to compare with results from Avia. Just remember to copy your settings from the DVD's input source picture settings to any other inputs' picture menus (TV, etc) you use.

Anyone experience any differences with the two different calibration discs (DVE and Avia)?

Is the 82 the only widescreen that does this? Or is this something other widescreens do also? Do any LCD and Plasma HDTV's do this?

Hey all, I got myself a Samsung 3082 after much deleberation and fustration of buying a Toshiba 30hf66 only to find out it had dead pixels and crappy picture quality no matter what I did to it.

I've been fiddling around with the SM for over an hour and one part is still driving me nuts, my screen is almost perfect except for a "bowtie" bend in the middle of the screen. Im having a hard time determining what option in the SM will hopefully help me adjust this somewhat. I basically need it to expand the screen in the middle or shrink the left and right edges so I can get as close to a flat lines as possible.

Someone mention somewhere in here that Samsung had a troubleshooting diagrams to look at, anyone happen to know where that is?

Heres a picture to better show what I mean.

Ive had my 3082 almost a week so far and I like it quite a bit. Use it a bedroom tv and as of yet i do not have hdtv service, thinking of just buying a indoor antenna (live in an apt) and see what local stuff i can get. Only hdtv channel not local id want is espn and i dont really see a need to pay for that, the regular cable looks pretty decent for now.

Any rate i have two questions:

1) Does the SM settings you put in on one source change for every source and do you need to change the settings for every different one? I know you need to change the picture menu settings for each individually, just wondering if that applies to the Service Menu as well?

2) Is there any way to change the default picture mode? Its slightly annoying to be playing ps2 on the svideo feed and go back to the tv source and have the mode default to Dynamic which is too bright. Changing it is no big deal but it would be great if there was a way to set custom as the default.

If both of these questions have already been answered then i apologize!

Thanks!

IceWindius,

How does your display look on a 4:3 setting, or a picture with bars of the sides? I could probably help you out if you could provide a picture of that, and I would also recommend you find kind of pattern image so that you could determine how even your display is. By pattern image, I mean like a picture with a square or rectangle that will help in adjusting your set. I used the AVIA Advanced Calibration Widescreen image to adjust my set (I think thats what it was). Also I could never get my screen adjusted perfectly so that I had no curved or bowed bars but I did minimize them dramatically.

kilik64,

Changing the Service Menu settings will automatically set your picture setting back to the "TV default" settings "Dynamic". The Service Menu will adjust the picture for all the inputs/sources so you only have to adjust it once and not for every source. I know of no way of changing the default picture setting of the tv permanently, other than manually changing it on every source.

Hi - You're quite welcome - one thing I forgot to mention previously, although it has been covered in other posts - on the Samsung 3082 you need to be in the picture's 'custom' menu to make setting changes (contrast, color, brightness, etc) separately for each input you use so that they become the default (ie. remain changed the way you set them).

To answer your question, upon initial set-up with the Avia disc it appears it is mainly used for the regular user menus (not service menus, though I suspect some of the test screens could be used there in a limited way, too, if you knew which settings to tweak). I have noticed a slight change for the better from my own initial playing around with the menus after using the Avia disc. But even then I went back and modified very, very slightly a couple of settings to my own preference, most notably the 'color' settings (lowered it) as I dislike an overly color saturated intense pic and prefer much more neutral, subdued tones. The setting that surprised me the most after using Avia was the degree to which the sharpness needed to be lowered. On an HD pic (ota PBS) and dvds the changes were the most notable. It's getting so that I can not stand to watch non-digital channels anymore since they are not very sharp in comparison - I've been hooked (and HD is just phenomenal on this set even from a viewing distance of 7-8 feet, though closer is better).

When I first got the set almost 2 weeks ago, without the Avia disc, I first turned on the PBS HD channel and set the color all the way to 0, then set the brightness, sharpness and contrast to what I liked on a quality b&w pic (all slightly lower than 50 in the end), then slowly turned color up to where I like it. Tint has remained dead on at 50 even after using the Avia disc. And I have not noticed any geometric issues either before or since using the disc. My set was manufactured in March 2006, so perhaps the quality control out of the factory on these issues has been improved (or I'm just lucky?).

Next I plan on using the DVE disc (which appears much more elaborate?) to compare it's recommended settings to the Avia's - more out of curiosity than need.

Good Luck!

oh.....my box is gone. Thanks again! I really like the 3082. I just wish that when I watch things in Zoom1 mode, that every time I switch channels and come back to the original I have to readjust the shift down ....so tips of heads dont get lost. I think they should have allowed the shift to stay indefinitely until you reset it or maybe turned the whole set off. Seems like that would have been an easy thing to do. Oh well.....just a minor issue.

I haven't noticed any problem in Zoom1 other than normal stretching - heads still fit it seems - I assume you mean you have to change the service menu each time you return to the original channel to get the heads to fit?

Well....check your Zoom1 ...are you sure the heads at the tips don't get cut off...like with the NEWS broacasts? I don't have to return to the SM I just have to push PicSize and use those arrow keys up or down as the case may be. But not the SM....I have not messed with that. I read a story about someone who played with the SM and now the TV will not come on . I had a problem like that but it was on my 1st 3082 which I took back. It all of a sudden went out...never to turn on again...why I do not know. I then tried a Toshiba...which was terrible PQ and SQ....so I went back to a brand new Samsung 3082....HH GREGG was kind of cooperative on this but I did have to pay several delivery charges. They were ok. Anyhow I'm a happy camper now!...other than that shift thing. . Thank you.

Ikabob -
OOPS! Just did the Zoom1 and no tops of heads - yikes! How could I have missed that? But perhaps only happens on non-digital stations (which I don't watch much) that aren't in 16:9, as I have Zoom1 and Zoom2 greyed out when I'm watching a digital signal. Will have to play around with this some more later.

Yes Chip, I have found that to me the Zoom 1 seems to eliminate the stretching distortion I see when watching a cable station. The sacrifice is that the tips are cut off or the bottom is...so I have to do a switch up or down every time. Small problem . I am really looking forward to when all or most stations broadcast in 16:9 format.

i have an old 32" trinitron that's dying and I'm considering this unit as my first entry into HD. I have a tv wall unit to hide it all away so depth is not an issue so i'm staying away from lcd. My question is this:

I will be leaving the 4:3 format. So i will lose real estate whenever i watch non hd programming. What are people's thoughts on that transition.

I am a filmmaker so i will often screen on this set and inevitably I watch a lot of movies.. likely in the 16:9 format. Is this a good entry or am I going to find that the technology will leave this behind a year from now and maybe I should've grabbed a phillips standard def for 500 (i do have a budget) bucks instead for now. I took a look at the uit at circuit city and there did seem to be a dip on the upper left of the screen.

I mentioned earlier that I am using an HDMI cable from my cable box which has locked the SD channels in at 4:3 format. At first I was somewhat bothered because it wasn't using the whole screen. But after a week or so, I can say that I actually prefer it over the stretched mode, so it hasn't been that big of deal at all. Others might have different ideas of course.

On a different note, I was curious what people are using to clean their screens. Mine has just started accumulating some dust so I was interested if people have any secret products they use to keep the set looking new.

These are the settings I came out with using AVIA, but remember picture settings differ depending on TV set and Room conditions such as lighting. Yes I did use the color filters to adjust the color and tint.

Contrast - 55
Brightness - 24
Sharpness - 0
Color - 47
Tint - 57

I set Sharpness on 0 because I could not see any difference in the range between 0 and 100. Even using the AVIA DVD I still could not see a difference. This may just be a issue with my set but I don't really know.

I'm happy to say that i have just purchased this set. I was going to get the XBR970 but the girl friend didnt approve of the price tag. :( I am very pleased with the set so far. I noticed quite a difference right away with games like Halo 2 and God of War compared to my other set.

I also picked up an AVIA DVD which ill refrain from using till I get some hours on my tube. Now some issues that I have that are very minor but I would like to know if anyone else have had any experience fixing.

I have an old Sony reciever that does not have optical in or out, so i just used the av out on the back of the set to hook up to my reciever. It works fine with I have my Xbox (not 360) hooked up with a Monster Cable component cable. It doesn't send the sound out when im in component video to the reciever from the av out jacks. I really just want to keep the wiring clean and not have to get a female coupler to hook up the xbox audio cables to the reciever directly. The AV out jacks work for both the S-Video and the standard rca hookups. Thanks in advance.

I'm a fairly new owner of a Samsung TX-S3082WH and I've been experiencing a few problems that I think can be fixed in the Service Menu, but I don't feel comfortable doing myself.

I have fuzzy text in both the bottom left and bottom right corners, and over-scan on the right side (When watching ABC HD programming, the "D" in the HD logo is cut off) and when I watch something in 4x3 the top of the right side of the SD picture is bowed inwards. When I open the program guide on my cable box, the horizontal lines are a little wavy.

Now, if I call Samsung support, will they do anything to help me with this? Do you think they will send a tech to fix this for me (I live in Kansas City) or will I have to send my TV off somewhere?

Just curious! Otherwise, I love the TV.

Well I still like this TV but the crooked nature of the picture is starting to wear on me. It seems like the bottom left hand corner of the picture is always crooked, ie. on a CNN ticker, the words get cut off at the bottom. The TILT features seems to fix this, but then it makes the top part of the screen crooked! Plus it doesn't fix it for every channel.

Especially when there are black bars on top and bottom it is quite obvious that the black bar on the top is much larger than the bottom bar. It's as though the picture is set too low. Any ideas? The guys at Samsung 1-800 weren't much help.

I think i will be exchanging the set i have though for another because the one i have seems to have some yellow/brown spot on the right side, which is visible when there is a full white screen, sort of like how it looks when a magnet is placed againgst the screen. but i have had no other electonics along that side or any speakers near it to cause the spot to show. Contrast 40

And again, each set is different so your set will likely vary. Hope this helps.

Just checking in again with some feedback on my 3082. It's been almost 2 months and so far, so good.

Initial problems were a slight tilt issue, which I fixed via the set's own options. After that, picture adjustments had to be made to compensate for bad pixelation in dark onscreen areas. I recommend turning the brightness down quite a ways. If anyone's interested in my settings, PM me and I can jot them down for you.

The only complaint I do have is that when using the TV with the Samsung HT-Q70 HTIB, I have to adjust the upconvert resolution on the DVD player to 720p every time I turn the machine off and back on, because for whatever reason, the TV jitters badly when viewing an upconverted DVD at 1080i. I didn't notice the jitter so much from my Comcast HD box, and I don't believe it's the connections (I'm using HDMI cables from monoprice.com). I wish there was a setting on the HT-Q70 to remain on 720p, but I've yet to find it if there is one. I also thought this TV was native 720p res, but apparently, after reading comments on here today, it's a 1080i.

Overall, I'm extremely pleased with the TV. I recommend it for anyone with a small viewin room (like me), bedroom, or as a 1st-time HD set or a secondary HD set.

justsc
07-11-06, 11:13 AM
I also use 720p from my Oppo upconverting player. At 1080i it has too much jitter. These players are really intended for fixed-pixel displays and are poor at interlaced formats.

I'd like to get my first HDTV but my roommate doesn't want to give up the entertainment center, which has a max width of 38".

Seems to me that, assuming all the problems of last year's models were fixed, the txs3082w is a good bet, apparently being the largest widescreen I'm going to be able to fit in the space allowed. (I do like the CRT idea, due to price and picture quality. Is there a larger, widescreen HDTV with bottom mounted speakers and a smaller outer border? Like the Sony KDF-E42A10 which I'd consider if it'd fit...)

So if this is the best bet for this size restriction, the big problem is this: The room is actually fairly large and the current configuration has the couch about 10' from the entertainment center. I've read that the optimal viewing distance is anywhere from 5-8'. Would this distance of 10' be a waste? It's so hard to really tell when the display at Best Buy is on a bottom shelf in an aisle about 5' wide...

Thanks!
-Daniel

Sorry that these questions are somewhat off topic but I wasn't sure where else to ask them. First off the set has been working fine for the past month which is awesome. I was just curious about what other people are using to clean their sets.

Now a question about the HD programming. I have a Comcast HD DVR box and have recently been recording HD movies off of channels such as HBOHD, Starz HD, TNT HD, etc. Does anybody know if they are using new generation hardware (HD-DVD, Blue-Ray) to broadcast these movies or are they using an Upconvert DVD player? I am asking because I was interested in getting an Upconvert DVD player but haven't had any first hand experience with the quality of the image. So in your opinions is it worth paying the $150 for an upconvert DVD, is the increase in quality noticeable, or am I just better off waiting a year to get the HD DVD players?

dlnester
07-11-06, 10:25 PM
First, I would bet that HBO-HD et. al. would be using computerized equipment to broadcast these movies from hard disk, not from DVD's.

I have an HD Upconvert DVD player (LG LDA-511) and it is wonderful. I have it hooked up to my Samusng with the HDMI cable and hooked to my home theatre with the TOSLINK cable.

The image is fabulous. You have to do some setup in the menu (tell what format you want 720p, 1080i ect. and tell it if you have 16x9 or 4x3 and you're ready to roll. I got mine for around $150 at Best Buy around Christmas 2005.

Also, it will play Xvid or Divix disks, and I've even had luck just putting DVD VOD's on a disk and it playing them. Honestly, I haven't found a disk it COULDN'T play so far.

You can't. This has been stated over, and over and OVER in this post. YOU MUST WRITE DOWN THE ORIGINAL DEFAULT settings before changing them as there is NO WAY to reset them back.

I don't feel sorry for people who don't know how to read through threads and then bitch about having issues.

I'm slowly coming to the same conclusion. I used to have more compassion for those who mess up their sets because they lack discipline when using the SM. No longer. As IceWindius has written, there's just too many posts giving this warning about recording default values first.

Unless I'm mistaken, this poster didn't actually say he'd neglected to record default values, did he? He may just be looking for a shortcut to get back to the default values w/o having to re-enter them manually.

Warning - On my Sony set, the reset option in the SM takes the values to factory newborn state - meaning all 0's or something of the equivalent. Nada. Nothing. Might as well round file the tv. Be very careful with using a reset function.

Hello, I have a question that hopefully someone here could help me with.

I bought the Samsung TXS-3082w over the weekend and I am very pleased with the HD picture. However, I am experiencing some audio issues. I am getting no stereo-out while hooked up through either of the component jacks (HD STB to TV & DVD player to TV). Also, when using an HDMI cable, I get a terrific picture but no sound, not even to the TV. My cable service is through Time Warner and I have an HD Scientific-Atlanta 8300 box.

Are these sound issues widespread with this specific Samsung model? If not, does anyone know how or if these two sound issues can be fixed?

I am considering returning the TV over this, but I would really rather figure out a way to fix it, as I love the HD picture I'm getting from this TV. Any aid on this would be much appreciated.

Hey folks.

I just picked up the 3082 today as my 2nd HDTV and I LOVE it.
Best Buy had it as an open item which was returned because of "no picture". A part was replaced by Samsung and I was able to get the set for less than 4 1/2 bills. Plastic and stickers all still on the TV.

Anyway, my question concerning 720p. I know CRTs aren't supposed to do 720p (1080i only), but when I set my Comcast HD DVR to 720p then click the Info button on the TV remote - it says "Resolution: 1280x720"

Also, on my other CRT (an '05 50" Mitsubishi CRT) - if I set my HD DVR to 720p, I get a scrambled picture. I have to set it to 480p or 1080i. Not so with the new Samsung. Just wondering if it might actually be capable of truly displaying a 720p resolution.

I've got an AVIA disc on the way and looking forward to making the picture look even better than it does now! Great set. The wife is out of town for the weekend and me, my Xbox 360 and my new Samsung are going to become bestest friends :)

Also - anyone have lag issues with the PS2 connected via component? I'm talking about the lag between the time I press a button on the PS2 controller and the action on the screen. There's like a 1/2 second delay which kills me on sports games like MLB where there's a pitching meter and you have to be 100% accurate
UGH! I thought Samsung fixed this when it was a big deal with their 1st gen DLPs. Sooo frustrating.

Chodite,

If you would have read the previous post you would know that the delay issue was addressed but has not yet been resolved.

I had my xbox hookep up through s-video and the lag was horrible. I upgraded to component cables and the lag reduced about 90% (just a guess), which is a considerable amount but still not good enough for games that depend on precise button timing and competitive LAN capable games like Halo, where any delay can be a huge issue.

I find it weird that the 360 doesn't seem to have any delay but my older systems do. Maybe it's because the 360 was built for HD, while the older systems were not. Or maybe it's just that I cannot really tell since I don't have a game that I can test to accurately acknowledge any delay.

And my apologies for only making it to page 6 in this thread ;)

Good to hear there are no lag issues with the 360 and hopefully there will be none with the PS3.

The 3082 does not actually display 720p. It show's what the signal is (when you press display) but it's 1080i. It accepts 720p and upconverts it to 1080i. I use 720p for the 360 and let my tv do the upconvert, I find it looks better on my former 3082 and my Sony tv.

This is directed at anyone who knows,

I'm having trouble understanding all the display information I am getting from people.

Now, I understand the differences between the HD digital images 720p and 1080i. The first signifies a image that is of the quality of 720 pixels (or lines) and is progressive scan (all lines are to be displayed at the same time), while the latter signifies an image of a 1080 pixel/line quality image but that is interlaced (the image is to be rendered with only half the lines then immediately followed by the other half in a sequence pattern).

What confuses me is the conflicting information about displays--In this case CRT's. A CRT like this one, the 3082, is 1280 by 800 (I believe I read this on a Bestbuy's website).

I was told by other's that any digital signal that is sent to a CRT would be scaled to the sets "native" resolution, in this case 1280 by 800.

But some people say that most or all CRT's "native" resolution is 1080i. So how does that work if the 3082 only has 800 vertical lines?

My guess is that a 720p, or lower resolution, image is going to be upscaled to fit the 3082's display (1280 by 800)? And a 1080i image would be downscaled in order to fit the display as well, right?

Any help would be appreciated, and don't be afraid to criticize what I've wrote. Any comment is cool as long as it leads toward a better understanding and contribution to the discussion.

Horizontal and Vertical Resolution- Your set has a native scan rate of 1080i. The 1080i comes from the HD format 1920x1080, and the 1080 is interlaced. 1920 represents the vertical lines that run from left to right, and this is called Horizontal Resolution. 1080 represents the horiazontal lines running from top to bottom, and this is called Vertical Resolution.

There are two common HD formats, 1920x1080i and 1280x720p. If your set receives an 1080i signal it is simply passed on to the screen. If it receives a 720p signal it is re-interlaced and scaled to 1080 lines for display. Your set can also display 480p. If your set receives a 480p signal, it's sent to the screen. If if receives a 480i signal it is deinterlaced and displayed on the screen.

The Best Buy numbers are inaccurate. However, I can see how they came up with it. Even though the signal can be received as 1920x1080i, your set cannot resolve all 1920 (vertical) lines of horizontal resolution. It's more like 800. Neither can it resolve the whole 1080 (horizontal) lines of vertical resolution. That's more like probably 700-800. Only larger HD sets have the "space" to resolve all of the lines in the two HD formats.

The set is still HD because it receives the HD signals and displays all the lines it can resolve in a 1920x1080i format, as opposed to an SD set that can only display 640x480i.

I hope this doesn't confuse things even further.

Thanks for your reply.
In order to fit in 1920 lines of horizontal resolution (the vertical lines), the tv needs to be wide enough to accomodate them.

Here's an example - I have the Sony KV-34HS420. It provides around 850-900 out of the 1920 possible lines. It all has to do with the size of the "pixels" and the space between them. The Sony KD-34XBR960 is the same size but has what Sony refers to as the Super Fine Pitch (SFP) tube. This set is manufactured to have much less space between pixels, allowing for more lines. Therefore, this set has 1,440 lines of horizontal resolution. These pixels are about as tightly packed as any set on the market. So, why don't they have all 1,920 lines? The set simply isn't wide enough for all the lines.

"What size would that be?" - It depends on pixel size, dot pitch (space between lines) and display size. You've seen advertisements for the 1080p sets? They have all the elements necessary to actually resolve all 1,920 lines. Until recently, such sets have been at least 45", as in Sharp's line of 1080p LCD sets. Sharp has just announced a 37" 1080p set. It all depends on how they're made. There are no 1080p crt sets. I suspect it's because of economics and physics. The industry's largets widescreen sets top out at 34". And, as discussed earlier, the vaunted XBR960 can only fit 1,440 lines. I suppose if someone were to make a crt set wide enough to resolve all 1,920 lines it would have to be at least 37-40" and employ the SFP tube as well. Such a set would probably cost $3K or better, but the weight and bulk would be prohibitive.

Thanks justsc,

I've always wondered why there where no huge crt hdtv's. I guess their may just be a technological barrier in trying to create a 1080p crt that would display every line for that kind of high resolution.

Every bit of the information you gave me makes complete sense and not that difficult to understand. Thanks for the help, and now I know exactly what to look for 3-5 years from now when I presume I will be buying my new 1080p hdtv (that is, of course, only if there is a decent amount of 1080p content by then)

Now a quick question: Do you guys have the same "ghosting"--if that is the right term--occurance during dark scenes. For example, if there is a bright light in frame and then the camera pans over to another spot, the light leaves behind a trail of green glowing light? Can this be minimized or eleminated using some of the options in the Service Menu?

I Just got the 8032W today for the LOW PRICE of $399. It was a display model at my local CC, but they had the wrong price tag on it. They had the price of the openbox 2782 set, but was underneath this sweet sweet TV. The guy at CC did not notice the difference in model numbers from the receipt to the TV itself and off I went. The TV has barely ever been touched, absolutely NO cosmetic damage or wear, and all the stickers were still on it and also in new condition. So far, I LOVE this TV. There were some serious geometry issues that I resolved through the service menu. But... There is a slight purple blotch in the upper left hand corner that comes and goes. There are no magnets or speakers near it and I've tried unplugging the set for several hours to see if it would be enough to degauss it. I've seen other people on this forum with the same problem with the same TVs, but those threads all hit a dead end with no conclusions. My question is, is there any way to manually activate the degausser through the service menu and will a manual degausser even work for this? Also, there is a very very slight dark spot on the right side of the screen. Not noticeable really at all unless the screen is completely white. Any way to conquer this through the SM? Thanks for any help as I do love this TV and am not wanting to return it.

what is a slightly dark blotch like that....I have something similar on a 37" Toshiba....had it from the beginning. I guess I should have rejected it but I thought that maybe I'd get something with a worse problem. The sltly dark blotch only is apparent when screen is light in that area...like sky etc. Anyway to fix that? Set is 4-5 years old now....and I love it.

The first day I set-up my 3082 I noticed the purple area in the upper left corner and also in the upper left corner. I also had these issues with my older SDTV. I thought the problem was the tv until I noticed the purple areas on my 3082, so I knew it was something else surrounding the tv.

I moved everything I had to a different, isolated location to determine the problem. I moved the speakers, my dvd's, my games, my computer, and then my xbox and 360. The problem with the right area was the 360. I found that the 360's harddrive was the cause of the problem, so I moved it further away.

I still had the problem with the left side so I moved everything that was on that side as well. It turned out that the problem was a wireless telephone we kept next to our computer. I moved it away to another part of the room and now the tv is fine.

Well that's how I solved my issue. Try moving things around or move the tv altogether and see if you see any change.

The most effective ways to mitigate ghosting is to keep Contrast as low as possible (without degrading picture quality), same for Brightness and use either low or no edge enhancement (VM Level in the SM).

Ok I need some help with my Samsung TXS-3082W. I bought a floor model (kind of regretting it now) and I whenever I try to pick a picture setting (i.e.- standard, dynamic, movie...), it will automatically switch back to "dynamic" after 20-30 minutes. It doesn't matter if I'm watching TV or a DVD, the picture will reset, along with the sizing (it'll go back to 16:9 after I set it to zoom 1).

Does anyone think maybe this is something the store did incase people were messing with the settings so it'll go back to the default after a set amount of time? I've tried calling the store, but they weren't exactly useful.

Any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks.

If you change an input (HDMI 1 to say DTV) the settings won't stay. Maybe that isn't what you are trying to do. Each input you have to setup individually.

PS> I get my 3082W back from the shop tomorrow!

Hi everyone, this is my first post to the forum but I have been reading many threads here since I am interested in buying a new HD TV.
Well based on my budget and space requirements my choices narrowed to the samsung 3082, the LG 30fs4d and the sony e42a10 but I still can't decide wich one to get the samsung seems to have these image geometry problems, the LG has the blurry image on the sides of the display and as the sony is rear projection it can't show 'real black' but it seems it doesn't have burn-in problems (at least I think so).

I hope you guys can help me on this, I am mostly interested on watching movies and SD 4:3 content and some gaming every once in a while. I would like to hear your opinion on these sets. Thanks

I have had this set for about 3 weeks, and have been tinkering with the service menu for the last 2 weeks using suggestions found on this board. I believe I have it just about perfect at this point. Out of the box I had some pretty major geometry issues as well as overscan, but am pleased with the adjsutments made in the deflection menu. The overscan is nearly perfect now, and my geometry is about 95% perfect. The only issue (very minor and hardly noticeable) is a very slight bow towards the center of the screen, and the lines become slightly curved towards the top of the screen. But other than that, this set is great if you are on a budget, I got a great deal on this set and as long as you are willing to spend a couple hours or so tweaking the service menu, it is a great value, and the picture quality is amazing.

I called the store earlier today and they had no idea, nor did the Samsung tech support. I realize each input can have different settings, which I have tried to modify, but either way, the setting will reset itself to "dynamic". I'm thinking there could be a demo mode the tv is in?

justsc
07-21-06, 03:44 PM
That might just be it. I recall you can set-up in DNiE demo mode on older Samsung sets. Maybe this is still true?

Try going into user settings and look for a DNiE demo and see if it can be defeated.

You've got good troubleshooting instincts (whether you're correct or not).

Actually, Dynamic is the default viewing mode. I do know that every time the Service Menu (SM) is accessed, and then returning to viewing mode, the set defaults to the Dynamic picture setting. Could it be that you are turning the set off to the point that it's not getting the trickle feed needed to be in stand-by mode. This could cause the tv to start-up in Dynamic mode after each power off.

Good Luck!

I have to chime in on the Samsung 3082.The Picture Quality on this cute 30' TV is sooooo good! Then when you switch to the Air HDTV input it is EVEN BETTER....the colors are so rich. I find that when using the HDMI interface the image received gets "fixed," and cannot be stretched. The only set I'm aware of that offers this flexibility when using a digital interface is the Sony KD-34XBR960, and the other Sony models using the super fine pitch tube.Hi -- hope you don't mind a noob question about the opposite to this problem!

I picked up a 3082 last night, along with a Panasonic S52 DVD player, so I could end up with an all-HDMI cabled system, feeding the signal from a Cox/Scientific Atlanta 8300 HD DVR and the S52 to the 3082's HDMI1 and HDMI2 ports, respectively.

I only had time last night to do some basic plug-in-and-make-sure-it-all-works stuff, and will be doing more tonight. In the meantime, if you are able to shed some light on the following, I'd appreciate the help.

The issue I came across last night was that the test DVD I used ("My Big Fat Greek Wedding"), when displayed in 1080i 16:9 (TV's setting), looked like a stretched 4:3 image. The image looked that way regardless of whether watching the DVD's 4:3 or 16:9 versions of the movie. Any thoughts? TV setting? DVD player setting? Or could it be just the DVD (I didn't have the chance to try a different movie last night)?

Thanks!
Mark

I bought one of these txs3082wh TVs at Sears almost 2 months ago. For a month I didn't notice any problems with the screen, but just this past week I noticed the top half of the screen had an hourglassing effect along the side edges. This was most noticable either when playing my PS2 with component connections, or using the TV as a PC monitor via DVI to HDMI cable. The only way this would go away is if I used a feature that had heavy overscan, such as 720p or 1080i TV programming via component cables to a Comcast HD cable box. So I figured I'd try fixing it via the calibration pots inside the TV, so I opened the back up and messed with the pots, and it didn't help. Only one of the pots actually changed the screen shape, but didn't help the hourglassing. Infact, I think messing with those pots made things worse. Now about 2 inches inward on either side of the screen there is a fuzzyness from top to bottom. It's most noticable with white text. The fuzzyness looks almost like there's too much red bordering one side of the white text. If I change one pot, the corner gets sharper, but the center of the screen goes fuzzy. If I change it back, the corner is fuzzy and the center is sharp. I didn't know if this was a faulty tube, if the pots are setup wrong, if this is normal for this TV, or if there's a setting in the service menu that corrects this. Anyone got any tips, tweaks, info, or common experience with this occurance?

This is almost always solved in the DVD player's settings. You must tell your player what kind of signal to send to the tv. The choices are usually 4:3 vs. 16:9 and progressive scan vs. interlaced. In most cases the tv doesn't need to be set-up with any specific settings. Try looking in your DVD player's menus and see what you can do.

I've been scouring this thread and the offical samsung slimfit thread for the better part of 2 hours. I nearly read the entirety of both threads and have found one other person with a similar problem as myself.

The problem is very difficult to describe accurately. Perhaps the best way to describe the occurrence is vertical lines that are greenish on the left side of the screen. It only occurs under certain conditions, which I haven't been able to pinpoint yet. Similar to this problem, a white vertical line seems to form when there is a bright picture (something white or a light/the sun) on the screen (again on the left side).

I can't post the url because of the 5 post restriction..... but here is part of the url of the post in the offical samsung slimfit thread that addresses this issue: /showthread.php?t=541592&page=45&pp=30

The post is from Vdubbia and includes a picture of the problem. There really weren't any solutions in that thread.

Additionally, I purchased this tv open box from circuit city (a mistake which I now know). But I did purchase the 3 year full warranty. Should I return this boob tube for a new one, if possible, can a repairman come to my house and fix this, or am I screwed?

I contacted Samsung Supoort on an issue with my television (overscan, geometry issues) and they fixed it, but I was told it was Samsung policy to not pay for pickup or delivery (I had to take it across Kansas City to get fixed)

The repair guy said he had to replace a few faulty circuits, and my overscan issues are corrected. I still have a minor geometry issue (the middle of the screen seems to bend up a little bit)

When I was at the shop, I asked what model of tv they had in the most. She said mine (3082W) and it was a Wednesday and they already had 6 of them in for mostly the same issues. Looking around, 9 out of the 12 televisions in the lobby were Samsung models.

I guess no one has an answer for my problem.

I got a service guy from Sears coming to take a look at the TV. Maybe he can fix it. If not, I get a new TV. :P

This TV seems prone to having the red and blue bordering white text. Geometry is a bit problem too. None of the options in the service menu seem to fix my particular geometry problems. I'm also noticing ghosting.

And today I noticed that now I have a white line going across the top of the screen. Will the problems ever end?

I bought this TV because I own a Samsung SyncMaster 997DF monitor that has been outstanding in performance. So I figured their TV would be good too. From the reviews I read, I stayed far away from the 79 and 80. Looks like that didn't help the cause.

hi all. just purchased the 3082 - a few questions.

1. I have both the AVIA and DVE discs on order from netflix - which one should I use?

2. Will the either disc automatically adjust for the various geometry issues or will it just explain how to recognize and fix them?

3. Not really sure what exactly my geometry issues are - it seems like clear on stations like espn that the bottom lines of the screen is slighty bent upwards like an upside smile (or frown) - what is that called?

4. Also, it seems from reading through pror threads that people are adjustin the clarity downwards to prolong life/quality. Is this true and if so how much is recomended?

5. Finally, I purchased the tv from Circuit City a few days ago and so i have somethin like 28 odd days to return. how do i know what issues are worth returnin the tv and startin over as my next 3082 might be in fact worse than the one I have now?

Sorry for the long post people thanks in advance for your help!

Can anyone post their experiences in using the 3082 with DVD upscaling to 720p and 1080i modes? I'm considering the set coupled with a Sony upscaling DVD unit.

I assume I will need to use the HDMI connection for this. FYI, my surround system is a Denon AVR-1905 with no HDMI support (component yes) so I will connect directly to the set from the DVD and send full surround to the AVR via optical cable.

Thx,

hi all. just purchased the 3082 - a few questions.

1. Both are good, Avia for me is the easiest to use. You will need to buy color filter's unfortunately as Netflix does not provide them (may be able to pick them up at a camera store).
2. You do the adjustments yourself they just show you what to do.
3.That is called bowing.
4. Usually they lower brightness and I would not recommend using vivid or whatever the brightest picture setting is.
5. I would say is it fixable if so then keep it, otherwise if it's something that does not bother you then you may want to keep the tv. If the bowing is something that is going to bother you for the rest of the time you own the tv than I say take it back.

I thought it was Contrast that they lower to prolong the tube's lifespan.
