View Full Version : Do Avia and DVE use the same color filters?
fujiyama 04-20-06, 07:40 PM I have Avia but lost the filters. I was thinking, instead of buying just the filters, maybe I could just buy DVE, since it's not that much more.
But can I use the color filters DVE comes with for Avia as well?
CT_Wiebe 04-21-06, 12:35 AM You don't have to buy DVE just for the filters. DVE is not very easy to use and (at least) one other AVS member and I have problems navigating the DVE disc in our DVD players. Here is a quote from a previous post that I made to another thread:
The AVIA swatches are the correct colors: Deep Blue Tricolor #47B, Deep Red Tricolor #29, Deep Green Tricolor #61 (based on the Kodak references).
The DVE blue filter "doesn't look correct" but seems to give the same results as the AVIA filters and the THX blue glasses (their THX Optimizer Glasses). Their Red & Green filters seem to be the same as the AVIA ones.
The correct Lee Filter numbers are: Tokyo Blue = #071, Primary Red = #106, Primary Green = #139. The DVE filters can be obtained from Video Essentials - click this link (http://www.videoessentials.com/extra_filters.php). For $3.00 + SASE, they're a lot cheaper than buying DVE (I have both AVIA & DVE, as well as the GetGray caldisc (http://www.calibrate.tv/)).
If you're thinking about getting another calibration disc, I would recommend the GetGray one. It is more precise than AVIA and much easier to navigate than DVE. It does not have the necessary test patterns for CRT displays, since it was designed for fixed pixel displays (LCD, DLP, plasma panels, etc.). You still would have to get at least a blue filter - the GetGray one doesn't come with filters - and you do have to burn your own DVD.
Also, the correct Blue filters (THX Optimizer Glasses) can be obtained from THX.com (http://www.thx.com/mod/products/dvd/optimizerIntro.html). It's interesting that these had been free plus S&H, but I just checked and they now are charging $1.00 each (plus S&H). Apparently too many AVS members had been getting them.

Are the color filters in DVE or Avia works with the GetGray test disc?

Yes. :)
CharlesJ 04-24-06, 04:38 PM Yes. :)
Great, thanks. One less thing to worry about :D
Mofongo 05-06-06, 01:52 PM Silly question:
Looking at the videoessentials.com website, it says "send $3.00 for each filter ordered." Is that each set of three filters, or do I have to send $9.00 to get one red, one green, and one blue?? (The answer might be obvious if I owned DVE).
Thanks!
Mofongo
Jorge_Burrito 05-06-06, 01:56 PM When I sent out for the filters from DVE I just sent $3 and they sent me in essence a piece of paper with all three embedded within it. Unless they have changed it recently, you only need $3.
VinnySem 08-01-06, 02:40 PM Just found this: Replacement Avia filters available on their webstore.
Argggg newb can't post URLs.
GeorgeAB 08-05-06, 01:19 PM Joe Kane re-evaluated what filters were available on the market prior to the release of DVE. The best he could find at that time were from GAM.

There is the link for the AVIA replacement filters.
amb7247 05-30-07, 03:45 AM any other place to get these filters? The link doesn't work. And sorry for resurrecting a almost year old thread.
robbyc30 05-30-07, 02:57 PM I have the DVE filters and a pair of the THX glasses. Recently I noticed that when comparing the two, the THX seem blue, while the DVE seem more purple-ish. Anyone ever compare? I have had both for quite a few years...can these cheap filters actually change colors after a time? I haven't tried using the THX glasses with DVE to see what the results are.

Try www.ovationmultimedia.com. There's a radio button to buy filters on the page.

RobThey are not the same filters (the DVE blue filter is a darker blue). However, they provide the same results except for plasma displays. The DVE filters work better for some plasma displays because the DVE filters also filter out the UV that some plasma displays have (the AVIA and THX optimizer glasses do not filter out UV).
If these filters get too hot or are stored in a damp environment, then they will discolor with time. As usual, store in a cool, dry, place.
MstrHnky 04-17-08, 12:14 PM after shipping, the filters cost $20 (or more with fed-ex).
you can buy a new copy of DVE HD (both HD-DVD and regular DVD) for about $15.
i'll pass on buying them direct and wait until i find some on ebay or elsewhere. $12 is ok, but not $20 for cheap colored plastic.
Jordan420 04-19-08, 11:50 AM You can get a set of the Lee filters here

they offer 3 sizes, I bought the 6" x 6.5" , fast shipping
Edit: link was not working
CT_Wiebe 04-19-08, 03:29 PM The correct filters from the Lee Filter Company, Polyester Lighting Filters are:
Tokyo Blue = #071 (same as the Kodak Deep Blue Tricolor #47B = AVIA = THX Glasses)
Primary Red = #106 (same as the Kodak Deep Red Tricolor #29 = AVIA = DVE)
Primary Green = #139 (same as the Kodak Deep Green Tricolor #61 = AVIA = DVE)
EDIT: See my previous post (#14) for the DVE Blue filter difference.
NOTE: These filters were identified during the development and testing of the GetGray calibration disc.

But then the THX glasses are "highly recommended" In the getgray documentation. I have a small sample of the Tokyo Blue 071 I received in a Lee Filters sample pack book and it is indeed a touch darker than the THX glasss.
Well. I have a Panasonic PZ85 Plasma and now I wonder. With my GetGray disc, which filter should I be using based on what you are saying here?
I know you have been a fan of the THX glasses but not sure when it's a plasma now.
