The contact details on the facts sheet said to contact Lindsay Woods at Philips for more info. I really want to know how many digital audio ins it has, optical and coax. A multiregion hack would be nice (and legal) as well. Jsaf65 05-12-06, 11:17 AM As a follow up to my original post, this unit was in my local Best Buy yesterday. However, they had yet to remove them from the box to set up, so I could not demo. Has anyone else had the chance yet? a-switcher 05-12-06, 03:04 PM Please post anything further about its specs when you know Jsaf65 05-15-06, 01:53 PM I was able to listen to the philips over the weekend, but only with a cd. To my untrained ear, it sounded excellent. I was able to compare it with the bose, sony and denon 2.1 surround systems, which were all side by side at my Best Buy. I would rate the philips as second best, behind the denon, which produced fuller and more accurate sound(of course at more $$). The philips, I believe, outperformed the bose and sony, both of which cost significantly more money. At $399, I think the philips should do very well. ross2k 05-16-06, 06:57 PM Jsaf, After looking further I was able to find the 2.1 you've discovered, looks awesome! Thanks for your input. I'm going to head over to best buy tonight to demo them for myself. Thanks again for the tip! I hope they sound as good as they look. Jsaf65 05-16-06, 08:45 PM Good luck! Let us know what you think. a-switcher 05-17-06, 04:44 AM Can someone help me find out how many audio ins (optical?) it has etc? Any specs sheets? kael 05-23-06, 10:06 PM Has anybody else hear this new 2.1 system my bestbuy hasn't put them on the self yet still in the box. For the price and what the philips website says at first look it looks good but hearing and seeing is the key. the spec sheet can be found at philips.com :p Jsaf65 05-24-06, 05:23 PM Yes, I know what you mean. I heard it at one Best Buy near me, but the other BB close to me has had it on the shelf in boxes for two weeks now. geethree 05-26-06, 04:52 PM Does anyone know how long the speaker cables are for the two front speakers? I'm trying to have the player in the back of the rrom near my projector and the speakers in the front. ngusev 06-06-06, 05:53 PM Tried one in the store. Sounds great. A multiregion hack would be nice (and legal) as well. Right, hack would be nice. ngusev 06-07-06, 05:14 PM Soon is what I read, the facts sheet said May. Can you try? ejn34 06-13-06, 05:33 PM Anyone purchase this system? Its exactly what I'm looking for but never bought a Philips before. Any info would be helpful. axiomata 07-25-06, 06:47 PM Has anyone here purchased this system and wouldn't mind writing a quick review? It looks to be a nice setup on paper. Kerronis 09-28-06, 03:05 PM Any new reviews on this? Looking into getting it, but want to see if its worth it. Thanks. zentech 10-03-06, 02:12 AM posted in another thread, but here it is again... just got the hts6500 from sams this week...if you have a sams nearby, go and play with it a bit, see if you like it nice system, but can't fully evaluate until HDTV arrives (about 2 weeks or so)...plugged it into my existing SDTV. so far, the pluses outweigh the minuses. +VERY easy to set up....no jumble of wires, etc. to set up +sleek design, fits in well with modern decor/electronics +love the size of the speakers, +fairly good sound (it's not and never will be a 5.1, but the target audience is people who don't want to deal with the 5.1 wiring, smaller room listening areas, etc. anyway...i'm not a techie, so this works for me) +has rear HDMI +front MP3 and USB inputs - the sub is less than overwhelming (probably most at this price point are), no independent controls on the sub - i would have liked a left-facing sub (because of the configuration of my living room area) -limited adjustments on individual settings (theater, etc.) for the price point, i see it as a good buy. of course, when the tv set is in i can give a better review. joebrandon1977 01-01-07, 12:38 PM Was looking at this system because of the cost and have seen a lot of great reviews here and on CNET. I've never owned a suround sound system. I have a Pioneer 42" Plasma that only has 1 HDMI input. So I was wondering if the CD player will upconvert through a componet connection? Or if I should buy an HDMI switch? Also, my various audio inputs (HDMI, Componet, RGA, etc each have a dedicated video input, so was curious how to to hook this up to ensure it will work with both CD, XBOX, TV, etc. Thx! Joe MaclclHatter 01-06-07, 02:02 PM I purchased it yesterday from BB as an open box item and I'm not sure if I want to return it fior a new one or just get a whole different system all together. The problem seems to be with the DVD player. It was extremely easy to hook up till I realized BB hadn't included the S component cable, MP3 cable, or the wall mounts for the speakers... I had an extra HDMI cable and used it and the sound is GORGEOUS!! I then popped in Star Wars II to THX it and the DVD never seemed to get going... it would freeze mid menu, mid scene or not even make it to the title menu before freezing up. I then put the DVD in my XBOX and it worked perfectly. I also can't seem to find a way to take the XBOX audio to the reciever while keeping the video at the TV since they are all 3 connected... But they accidently gave me the HTS6500. I ended up keeping it since it was perfect for my bedroom. Plus, it cost more. hehehe... So far, I haven't had any problem with the system. Just to let you know. There's a firmware Version 41 that might help improve playing disc. You can get this from the philips support website. I've updated mine so maybe that's why I'm not having problem so far. Who knows, it might help. Also, my tv has an audio out. So I used the red and white wires connect to the (TV in) on the Home Theater system to get whatever sounds come out of the tv to the system instead. Just remember to change the source to TV. So it should work for the XBOX too. If your tv has optical coaxial out then you connect the audio via of optical coaxial cable wire. If that doesn't work, try hooking the XBOX audio wires (red and white) directly to the TV in on the Home theater system. ky70 01-26-07, 01:29 PM Hello All, Another home theatre rookie here (I apologize in advance for my basic questions). After doing my reseasrch I've decided on going with the HTS 6500. Unfortunately I can't locate any details (on forums or on vendor sites) regarding the mounting of these speakers. I'm looking for anyone with experience with this unit to tell me about what mounting options are available with the speakers. Are they to be attached directly to the wall or is some type of speaker mount needed and if so what type fits these speakers. Any direction is appreciated. Thanks! Tulpa 01-26-07, 01:34 PM According to Cnet, they come with wall mount brackets. http://reviews.cnet.com/Philips_HTS6500/4505-6740_7-31660606.html?tag=return The relatively small (4.8 by 12 by 3.8 inches each), magnetically shielded front speakers have integrated tabletop stands and are also supplied with wall-mounting brackets. Now what those brackets are, I have no idea, but I imagine you can get them to work with a generic wall mount. edit: Are you near a Circuit City? They sell them there. You can stop by the store and see what they use, then determine what you need to hang them. ky70 01-26-07, 02:27 PM Thank you Tulpa...great info/advice. spakus 02-06-07, 08:50 PM i just picked one up at Home Depot and love it. Especially with the $175 price tag. beekermartin 02-08-07, 11:51 PM spakus, did you find this in a Home Depot store or on their website? I haven't seen it in any of their stores. It is priced much higher on their website and it says internet/catalog only. fdk71265 02-10-07, 06:45 AM OK ! I am more then pleased with the HTS6500 by Philips. I just bought this HTIB for 175.00 at home depot and it was a steal. Im sure the price will keep going down for those of you who may still want one especially because the new models are coming out soon. I know circuit city has it for $279 and then for $229 after a $50 rebate. This system really rocks for the price. I just watched pulp fiction and you can hear every gunshot every footstep and every background noise with just these 2 excellent speakers. They are a heavy set of speakers and the wires are more like cables with plug-ins rather then that cheap speaker wire you get with most HTIB. Cnet rated this around a 7.5 but the reviewers/owners of this system gave it around an 8.3. Which is pretty incredible to get over 20 or so people to AGREE and rate it that high... Cnet has rated very few HTIB at 8 or more and they were $1000 systems. They gave the bose 321 a 6.3 A system I almost took the plunge on. Im glad I didn't! I saved over $800. Thanks to this forum I found out about this HTIB for $175.00 at Home Depot. I called my 2 local stores and they said sold out. I called the 1st store back and asked for a raincheck and this was about 20 mins. before closing and the guy said he found one over by the appliances when he was sweeping. I got there 5 mins before closing and Im glad I did. Thanks for letting me know about the sale price! Home depot is selling it for I think around $400 on there website. OK! If I had to say something negative about this system it would be no bass controls for the subwoofer And the bass isn't as loud as I would like. But when you crank it up another notch or 2 then it is more than enough. The hookup was easier then tying your shoe. IT has a Hdmi if you can use it with your Tv. I don't think I have ever been happier with a purchase. What you get for the price is pretty incredible. Well im going to play around with it so let me know if you need any questions answered! BufNY 02-11-07, 11:05 AM Anyone check out the USB interface? I'm wondering how well the HTS-6500 works with file nesting, and title/artist information. I would probably use it with a portable USB hard drive, so if you have experience using it with a larger drive, please let me know. Also, on turning off and on - does the USB pickup where left off? Thanks! riotj 02-23-07, 01:23 PM When I bought my LCD tv from BB, I was supposed to get the Philips HTS3450 Home theater system free as a promotion deal. But they accidently gave me the HTS6500. JSD131, I guess you didn't have any problems downoading. Thanks in advance. jsd131 02-23-07, 04:03 PM I'm having the hardest time downloading the firmware update. JSD131, I guess you didn't have any problems downoading. Thanks in advance. I followed the directions exactly as stated from Philips website. Look at the Firmware Upgrade Readme File. I couldn't attach a link so you'll have to search for it. Just type HTS6500 in the CONTACT & SUPPORT box. It's under the sofware section. I've downloaded the software on a blank cd. Makesure it was unzip and do not change the file name. I just insert the disc and press play. Everything should just work like a charm. Another note, you should make sure you have an old firmware version on system before installing Version 41 (see file above). I had the firmware updated before even trying playing a disc. So I wouldn't be able to tell you if the firmware actually improve the disc playing. All I know, is that I haven't had problem playing any dvds so far. I've watched at least 3 to 5 movies a week. So I'm assuming it works. I pretty much only use it for dvds so other discs I wouldn't know. Good luck! riotj 02-23-07, 07:05 PM I followed the directions exactly as stated from Philips website. So i searched and called 5 or 6 home depots in my area and finally found out that the one in West Nyack, NY (at the Palisades Center Mall) still had 20 units. I go there and they actually have an consumer electronics section but the catch is that the HTS6500 is $349.99 there. After 15 minutes or so of haggling I get the $175.00 price and leave happy. I get home and set it up only to be thrilled with the sound. I heard both the Sony DAVX1 and Bose 3-2-1 and this system is just as good for a heck of a lot less. That being said.... I have it set up from my Sammy 42' DLP with analog RCA wires but cant set up a digital connection until I get the Cables to go Toslink - Coax converter. Will I get a major difference in sound quality with the digital connection or will it be a waste of $40? snapper717 03-05-07, 07:17 PM I've been checking my local Home Depot's (Long Island, NY) and I am finding the price on the HTS 6500 the same as on the HD website...Is the ridiculously low price that you guys have seen a managers special or has it been reduced to clear it out for a new system?? I'd buy one in a second if I saw the price quoted in this thread. Anyone else having trouble finding it for the low price?? riotj 03-06-07, 09:35 AM I bought mine in Feb for 175.00 in California - after christmas clearance. I had one home depot search the others in the area and they found 8 in one store so I went there. Maybe IAMJoCanadian can chime in as to how he got it for 175 when it was listed for 349 in the store he went to. snapper717 03-07-07, 05:35 PM riotj...was that the price markedon the unit, or was it temporarily "reduced"??...it's strange how some Home Depots have it at a different price (approx 1/2 price) than other Home Depots have it. Ziminee 03-08-07, 11:07 PM The $175 thing may have been a Christmas clearance or some kind of sale, but it doesn't work for that price now. I went to the West Nyack HD and they had the Philips unit, and it was tagged for $349. I told the guy (Assistant Store Manager was called over) about it, and he pulled up the last 7 days of sales on that unit on the computer (I saw it on the screen myself) - four sold in the last week, not one sold for $175, so i dunno... Anyhows, I plead my case and cried about my long drive - ended up getting the unit for $299 ($50 dollar customer satisfaction markdown) and he threw in a 2 year replacement warranty at no charge. Still not a bad deal. The unit setup in no time and sounds excellent. Working alongside a 57" JVC HD-ILA 1080P and it blows the TV's speakers away. Also, I would HIGHLY recommend using the HDMI interface - HUGE difference over component inputs. Upconverting works great to 1080i. USB interface also works fine as well as the audio input plug in the front (iPod works flawlessly). Went to the Philips from my JVC 5.1 surround system - too much wiring showing along the floorboards and the sound just wasn't quite right with the presets (Theater, Movie, etc...). The Philips has great sound and is easy to use - I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a good (not great) simple 2.1 surround system. kjm8888 03-18-07, 01:52 PM No Home Depots in my area have this unit so I bought it (for my mom) at buy(.)com for 249.00. After researching similar units it seemed the best fit for her budget. It arrives thursday and I'll be setting it up next weekend. I'll post a full review then. snapper717 03-26-07, 05:48 PM KJM8888...i look foward to the review to see if it's worth the $$$ knv8 04-20-07, 04:00 AM on sale at target for $209, just got one, its a keeper, too bad it doesnt play avi straight from usb drive. but besides that, sound is great. jrgriff 04-20-07, 04:51 PM on sale at target for $209, just got one, its a keeper, too bad it doesnt play avi straight from usb drive. but besides that, sound is great. FishKepr 05-21-07, 04:19 AM For logistical reasons I need to mount our components above the TV screen about six feet above the floor. It looks like the IR sensor for this unit is mounted on a surface which sets it back from the front. How much will it effect it's ability to receive an IR signal from a depressed angle, about -20 to 30 degrees? Would it pick up a signal at -40 degrees? Our couch is 10 feet away. I just returned from my local Costco here in Mexico City and was tempted to buy this item. The price here is $400 so it's not an easy decision, like you guys buying them for $175 and $200. (here in Mexico, all electronics cost almost double what they do in the U.S., so I try to buy my stuff in San Diego; like iPods, laptops, DVD recorders, etc. But when it comes to a bulky setup like this, it's more problematic bringing it through the airport there and customs here. I did it in Feb with an LCD hi-def TV, bought at Costco San Diego, but what a hassle !!!) I'm a little leery about the reports of the disk drive on this unit crapping out; maybe I'll keep looking. But the choices are not nearly as numerous here as in the U.S., so usually I'm stuck with whatever Costco or Sam's Club sells here. Tomorrow I'm going to Sam's, to check out what they carry. (they often also carry the same Philips stuff as the Costco.) Can you tell that I'm sick of the crappy sound coming out of my Sony TV? !!! I need something to jack up the sound of my DVD movies, especially since I have HDMI inputs on my TV. Anyway, thanks again; it's nice to be able to go to a forum like this and get so much input from current owners, before purchasing. Rick mexicorider carnegie1 08-11-07, 12:18 AM Be prepared for possible problems with the disk drive, this philips model tends to eat the disk and the drive gets stuck. -Grant I have played over 100 dvds on this unit and have yet to encounter any problems with eaten disks or stuck drives. There was a firmware update to address this issue so I think they have this problem rectified. cookswv 08-14-07, 07:40 PM The only problem I'm having is that its playing my dvds in black and white. Ive tried several dvds, and other audio/video cords, as well as other outputs etc on my tv. Anyone know a solution. I love this unit, but cant watch the dvds, cause they are in black and white bigmutt 08-15-07, 03:21 PM The only problem I'm having is that its playing my dvds in black and white. Is this the case with commercial DVDs and ones that you've burned yourself? cookswv 08-15-07, 03:26 PM Its with all my dvds, commercial or my own. cool007 09-05-07, 03:35 PM Its with all my dvds, commercial or my own. Did you update the firmware? They have a version 42 firmware on their web site. If you didn't then it's a good idea to try that. cookswv 09-05-07, 03:47 PM I checked the firmware and it doesnt look like it would even help the problem i have, and its totally unrelated. I could be wrong but... cookswv 09-05-07, 04:01 PM I've even had problems with my remote freezing up some and sometimes it wont work the system. Is this system just a faulty one, or did I just get a lemon. dreamcast87 09-11-07, 12:54 PM The only problem I'm having is that its playing my dvds in black and white. Really impressed with the ease of set up. Literally right out of the box onto the entertainment center and a few plug in's later, it's up and running. Very good sound for the money. Got mine at Wal-Mars for $249. Checked several other places and they had none or had to order them. Will probably do the firmware update later next week. Now I just need to get my Panny 42" Plasma (should be in Thursday)! Thanks for the info guys! Ben CyBeRjUnKiE 10-17-07, 03:49 PM Hi guys, I have this HTIB, and I have to say it's not bad. I did encounter some No Disc issues even after updating firmware, I believe v46 is now the latest firmware. What I found out is that the drive can get pretty dirty real quickly. If you are getting No Disc issues, blow on it using some compressed air. After I did that several times, my discs had no problems getting recognized and playing again. My gripes with this though is that it has very limited inputs, so it's not really like a true home theatre, can't even stick a microphone to do some karaoke. And although it supports DIVX and DIVX Ultra, you would think it would support regular avi's (no it doesn't) so I'll have to convert my avis that I recorded from my camera into a DVD or DIVX. I have to admit though, the sound is pretty good maybe not as good as those big 5.1's but it's really nice when i watch my movies now. The Sonowave does a pretty okay of prettending to be a surround sound system. One thing I really like about it is ability to upscale my movies....it really makes a noticeable difference especially if you have a large LCD or Plasma that has a fixed display. I've got a 42" LCD and my movies seemed bland and was never satisfied with the quality on the screen, but after putting this upconverted, I ended up watching movies I've previously watched because of how it looked so much better afterwards. lascapa 10-28-07, 11:08 AM Hello everyone, I just purchased this yesterday. So far I am pleased with the sound and pictue quality when playing DVD's. I have it hooked up to a Philips 47 in. with ambilight. I like the fact that it upscales my movies to 1080i. This was in my budget and I didn't want to mess with a 5.1 system and having to run wires to the back of our living room. We sit 8 to 10 feet away from the tv and the sound is perfect. I do need to mess around with the lip sync. It seems a little off while watching TV and using this system as my speakers for the television. As for the disc issue some are having, I will just have to wait and see. Philips does have a 12 month warranty on this system. I checked the firmware version and it is v-43. V-46 is available on the Philips website. Does anyone know exactly what v-46 is suppose to correct? I could'nt find it listed anywhere. Thanks Peein 07-18-08, 05:55 PM Hi, I bought a used one of these pieces of crap yesterday and it ate the first disc I put in. How do I go about getting it out? Also, does anyone know how to get the v-43 update for the loading errors? The only one available is v-46. I'm still not sure how I am going to use it if it's just going to eat it but we'll see. Thanks carnegie1 08-13-08, 04:04 PM V47 upgrade is available on the Phillips website |
