Don_Kellogg 05-08-07, 02:19 AM I hope this means Blu-Ray will start to fade. I have nothing against the format I just feel it belongs as a PC storage media. When it first came out the quality was lacking, it's gotten better but still I think HD DVD is the future. Has Sony ever won a media format?? Just wondering... vladd 05-08-07, 02:21 AM Yeah and VE has the A2's for $299, not sure why you guys are paying so much for a A1 or D1??? A1/D1 = Multi-channel analog audio out = 5.1 DD+ and TrueHD on receivers that cannot decode these formats but have multi-channel inputs. This option is not available on the A2. Bud-man 05-08-07, 06:11 AM You guys brought a old thread back from the dead, also walmart still thinks these are worth it!, they have to recoup there losses are not going to sell this player at $199 where it belongs!! Toshiba HD-D1 HD DVD Player $349, May. 7 6 PM Walmart.com has the Toshiba HD-D1 HD DVD Player - Black for a low $349.99. $10.97 shipping. HAHA!! $349 and this was advertised on Techbargains. joerod 05-08-07, 06:43 AM 264.00 is still one heck of a deal! I may jump on one for my outdoor theater! cadbury8 05-08-07, 08:32 AM I checked the specs. Something just doesnt seem right to me. Video Up-Conversion for SD DVD (720p/0180i) i really dont think 180i would give a very good resolution. joerod 05-08-07, 08:39 AM Always something! :D sivartk 05-08-07, 08:51 AM I think they're $279. My Wal-Mart still has (as of 5/6) the Samsung 30" CRT HDTV for $550....when it gets down to this price in my area, I'm grabbing one for the bedroom. On topic note, they don't have (nor have every carried) any HD DVD Players and/or movies...hurry up already...tired of driving 10 miles to the closest CC :) joerod 05-08-07, 09:00 AM My local Walmarts have never sold any HD DVD titles or players either! Nate7357 05-08-07, 10:26 AM Why would anyone choose this player over the HDA2. Its has an uglier design IMO and it looks like its double the height. The HDA2 is 2nd gen around the same price, and is a much sexier piece of hardware, ? Am i missing something ? joerod 05-08-07, 10:29 AM No, you have a good point. Mine is for outside so looks means nothing. I am going by price alone. Of course if it is heavier to carry around that should be a factor to. I will probably wait to get a combo unit for 5 to 6 hundred anyway... Now that i have a 92" PJ setup in my basement it would be worth it. wormraper 05-08-07, 11:54 AM A 30" tv is hardly worth it to watch HD-DVD on, i had a A1 used on a 42" Panny Plasma and after the unremovable letterbox it was worthless, i sold it on e-bay. Now that i have a 92" PJ setup in my basement it would be worth it. Actually I'm glad that the A1/D1 (don't know about the later models) didn't have the zoom function built into it. That way we don't have to worry about non OAR :D And, I'm sorry, if you can't see the increase in picture quality between 480p upscaled on a 42" plasma to full 1080p (well most likely 720p because of the plasma's rez) then something is going on. Unless you based it being worthless totally on the fact that you couldn't zoom in to get rid of those evil black bars (I've heard black bars can actually make you go impotent!!!!! Also that is the first sign of the Beast) MauneyM 05-08-07, 12:10 PM Why would anyone choose this player over the HDA2. Its has an uglier design IMO and it looks like its double the height. The Wal-Mart here in Olathe, KS has a Tosh D1 and the RCA(not sure of the model#) HD-DVD players on clearance for $290. They also have the Philips BDP900 Blu-Ray player on clerance for $498 sivartk 05-08-07, 01:13 PM A 30" tv is hardly worth it to watch HD-DVD on, i had a A1 used on a 42" Panny Plasma and after the unremovable letterbox it was worthless, i sold it on e-bay. Now that i have a 92" PJ setup in my basement it would be worth it. My HD-A2 is attached to my 100" PJ setup. The 30" would be for my bedroom and watching before bed and news in the morning....since I use OTA only, I would like a digital tuner and an alarm to come on automatically in the morning. Even with OTA HDTV on my 42" Plasma (in the living room), I can see a big difference between 480p DVD and 720p HDTV...especially with sports. Oh yeah, you wouldn't "chop off" part of the Mona Lisa (say, you didn't like to see her hands), why would you "chop off" part of the movie (that is what happens when you "remove the letterbox"). Like my moniker states OAR only, please (OAR=Original Aspect Ratio) Nelsun 05-08-07, 05:23 PM Guys- I've been lurking around the HD areas as I am considering the jump now due to the Toshiba deals, rebates and free 5 movie offers. I was at Costco this morning and a saw a tall stack of the Toshiba HD-D2 there. I am assuming it's a rebadge of the HD-A2 with all the same functions and features? It was priced, can I say the price? Seems I can get a better deal at Circuit City as they'd have the rebate and free HD-DVD's. Anyway, this is interesting to see they've made the leap too. Don't know how recent this is though. Thanks for any insights. joerod 05-08-07, 05:53 PM I would not wait either way! Get into HD DVD... ;) sivartk 05-08-07, 06:24 PM HD-D2 is the HD-A2 with different model number and included HDMI cable. The 5 free DVD's comes with this unit, too. What CC rebate are you talking about. More than $50, I hope. joerod 05-08-07, 06:25 PM Can't be that with a stick! :) Nelsun 05-08-07, 06:53 PM I just checked the CC site, I guess the rebates are over, I thought it was over $50.00. But the Costco price is less then the CC price. Thanks for the info that the 5 free movies are available and not just from CC. Cool they include the HDMI cable! I would connect this, if I buy it, to a Pioneer Elite HD-1130, anyone do the same? What has me interested is all the comments that the Toshiba has such a great upconvert capability. That's an important consideration! But that darn format war! mikecazzx 05-08-07, 07:38 PM I just checked the CC site, I guess the rebates are over, I thought it was over $50.00. But the Costco price is less then the CC price. onsideration! But that darn format war! So far I have avoided the format war and have been capturing over the air hd with a VBOX, Beyond TV and a huge Radio Shack antennae. I am about 45 miles outside Chicago. I play that back over the network to my JVC DVD100U with DVI out and it looks stellar. I finally bought the Toshiba HD-D1 today for under $265 online with a 5 movie offer. I know its an older model, but my Optoma HD78DC is only 720p anyway. A killer 720p if I might say so myself. I figure at this price its worth getting some use out the HD movie format finally. joerod 05-09-07, 12:17 AM Welcome aboard! :) bunger3_16 06-27-07, 02:12 PM Hey everyone, I have a favor to ask: This may be an exercise in futility, but I figured it was worth a shot. There is an HD-D1 still sitting on a shelf at a local Wal-Mart in West Central Illinois where my parents live, and it is clearanced out at $220. I would like to get it a little bit cheaper, and preferably before the 30th so I can take advantage of the free HD-DVD offer. My question is, has anyone found this HD-DVD player cheaper at a Wal-Mart, and if so, would you happen to still have the receipt? The store manager told me that if I had a receipt copy, he would be inclined to make a price match. The thing has been sitting there for months and I think I'm the only one who is even remotely interested in purchasing it. If anyone has a receipt scan they would be willing to share, I would greatly appreciate it. Just PM me if anyone has one. Thanks so much! amplifone 06-27-07, 03:28 PM I saw a D1 an hour ago for $200 at a NJ walmart.. They had the RCA player for a bit more, and the Philips BDP9000 bluray for $300. joerod 06-27-07, 03:30 PM The Philips is 300! ack_bk 06-27-07, 03:37 PM The Philips is 300! I would jump on this player for $300 and a 90 day no questions asked return policy.. Tes7769 06-27-07, 04:51 PM My local Walmart just got in a bunch of A2's that they are using to replace aPhillip's BRD player. When i asked the guy rebuilding the mod if there was a reason they were replacing the BRD player with an HD DVD playe, he said that the store sold alot more HD DVD's so they were pulling the BRD player in favor of the HD DVD player. FYI The Phillip's BRD they were takig down was going for $698. joerod 06-27-07, 05:14 PM So would I. It would be great to use for with my outdoor theater set up! Damn! |
