View Full Version : XBOX 360 TV settings thread
Stryker412 04-28-06, 01:49 PM After looking at the XBR settings thread, I thought we might need a unified thread for all TV makes/models and the settings for 360.
I would like to know for those that own a Sony WE655, what settings you have your 360 set to?
MastaMind 04-28-06, 02:02 PM I agree that this would be a good idea as long as people know that things will vary depending on environment and personal preference!
Kysersose 04-28-06, 09:11 PM Made it a sticky...
Arutha_conDoin 04-29-06, 08:31 AM I have an XBR and am using the 1080I setting. What is recommened for the XBR set? I am not sure if I want to wade through that XBR thread since it is so huge. :D
wokisan 04-29-06, 01:30 PM Ok, I know a few here are playing the 360 using the Westy LTV-32w1 set. Here are my settings that have been influenced by the Westy thread here on AVS.
Xbox 360 - VGA connection - 1360x768 WS
Brightness - 47
Contrast - 55
Saturation - 56
Hue - 2
Color Temp - 3
Aspect Ratio - Standard
Backlight - 40 to 45
This tv is in an area that is not naturally well lit (not many windows) but has plenty of installed lights around (track lighting above, fixture above couch/chairs, multiple lamps as well).
I am very pleased with these settings (including the depth of color) with one exception....HALO 2 is too dark with these. I have to bump up the brightness and the backlight setting to play that one game.
Great idea for a sticky by the way. Hope this helps someone.
MastaMind 04-29-06, 01:46 PM Wokisan, thanks for posting your settings for the LTV-32w1. I use the following:
VGA set to 1360x768
Brightness - 50
Contrast - 60
Saturation - 38
Hue - 0
Color Temp - 3
Aspect Ratio - Standard
Backlight - 28-25 (day & night)
My Westy is located in my family room which is very well lit by natural lighting and several forms of artificial light if needed. BTW, I love gaming on this set and look forward to the upcoming 47" 1080p models by Westinghouse and Olevia (signature series).
ferrisg 04-29-06, 09:26 PM I don't own a 360, but I'm curious, do any games have a screen with color bars so a colorimeter could be used to check your settings? Or has somebody used the HDNET pattern stream via MCE to check this?
Tabasco 04-30-06, 04:09 AM NBA Live has color bars.
Samsung HLP5063W DLP-RPTV
VGA 1280x720p
Gamma: 0 (SM adjustment)
Brightness: 43
Contrast: 60
Color: 47
Aspect: Expand
But these numbers change per game, really. Oblivion, Tomb Raider, and Burnout are kind of dark, and BF:MC is too bright (and sometimes too dark). Thankfully Tomb Raider and Oblivion had video adjustments, something MS needs to require in games' menus.
Hi, on my Vizio P50HDM 50 inch plasma I have the following settings that I got from using the THX Optimizer on the star wars 3 DVD played over the 360 DVD player.
Brightness- 47
Contrast- 49
Dynamic Contrast= 1 and all other advanced settings off
Let me know if anyone got something better?
Thanks

MastaMind 04-30-06, 05:30 PM No one has a Sony WE655 series? :(
Are you sure that it's not the Wii655 :p
I would check the rear projo forum. I know a member named UMR has several threads on the older LCD projection sets and explains how to access the service menu and such.
Stryker412 04-30-06, 10:12 PM I'm not really looking to access the service menu, I just want to see what other 360 players with this model TV have their settings set to. I'd like to see if maybe their settings are better than mine.
teckademic 05-01-06, 02:28 PM how do you determine contrast/picture settings?
V1per41 05-01-06, 02:34 PM I don't own a 360, but I'm curious, do any games have a screen with color bars so a colorimeter could be used to check your settings? Or has somebody used the HDNET pattern stream via MCE to check this?
PGR3 does. I know that.
gamegod2x 05-01-06, 06:14 PM anyone have there settings for a 34" sonyxbr960?
GamerJay 05-01-06, 06:53 PM Anyone playing on a SP4805? How is it and what settings are you using?
JohnnytheSkin 05-02-06, 12:49 PM Any SXRD settings? I've used the NBA Live/FIFA World Cup pattern to set color and I get similar results to my 1080i DVD and HD settings. However, using the "below black" bars on the bottom right, my brightness dips to around 24. This makes the BB bar disappear, but is considerably lower then the other components I have (where brightness is right around the Sony dot). What gives? I've used Get Gray and DVE on my DVD player, so I know the brightness there is correct.
Any help with the 360 settings? I'm hooked up via component and using 1080i resolution from the system. I believe I'm using the pattern correctly, but the results I have make 'Battlefield 2' and 'Oblivion' VERY dark. It's extremely hard to navigate out of some tunnels and rooms in both games. Thanks for any help you can provide.

For my SXRD I really haven't played with the settings. What I have done though is switch the picture mode on certain games. DOA 4, Oblivion, and Need for Speed Most wanted, I put it on the Vivid mode and it helps with the colors and brightness pretty well. Other games I usually leave it on Standard. Do you know if we make changes fror that input(mine is Video 4) if they will just be changed on that input, or will it reset after I goto another input and watch TV(such as video 6)? I imagine each input will save the settings. For the most part though I think the settings are pretty stable where they are for me, but then I don't want to take the time to calibrate it correctly since I want to play the games instead. Also what I like visually may not what my family or friends like.
JohnnytheSkin 05-02-06, 03:34 PM The SXRD settings are saved for each input and picture mode (you could have different settings for Vivid, Standard, and Pro for each input).
I've looked at Vivid and Standard and at default they are too blue. I also like the extra options that Pro offers. I'm just looking for some help regarding an "accurate" image (hard for games) with detailed shadows and good colors. As I said, I like EVERYTHING about my current settings except for brightness...yet when I turn it up too high everything is washed out. HELP!
*I'm also wondering about the Sony color temperatures. For gaming, is "Warm" still the best option? Is there a set of gaming color standards (i.e. 6500K for NTSC and something else for PC or gaming levels)? Something was discussed on this with no definitive answer over on the calibration thread. Thanks for any help that can be provided.*
Arutha_conDoin 05-02-06, 11:31 PM Have you played with the Iris settings? All I can say is the SXRD has a lot of settings to fiddle with. Which is why I I'll let you do that and hopefuly you will post your settings so I can try them out. :D

The Apparition 05-03-06, 01:28 PM i have a samsung HL-R5668W and would like to try a custom setting for the 360 as i have it set to movie mode and adjust the brightness up a little as it is very dark. i always mess with the setting anyway so if i don't like it i can mess aroundwith it more. thanks
PARASITE 05-03-06, 07:42 PM Ok i have a SXRD and i used digital video essentials and recently with Spyder Tv and sometime soon i will have chadb isf it but here is what spyder has revealed to me so far and my toshiva hd dvd player set to 720p . these look great for the 360 I have plenty of shadow detail "NO" black crush and great contrast. which i will talk about later. 360 set to 720p first of all because it does run smoother and tho you think you can see more on 1080i its just because it makes everything smaller. Detail is the same. Ok here goes
Pro
Iris: 0
Contrast: 49
Brightness: 30
Color: 34
Hue: 0
Sharpness: 16
Temp: Warm
drc mode cinemotion "although for gaming i dont think it matters"

ok some things i want to point out here. Having your contrast up too high will effect your blacks as well. It will cause your tv to crush low level detail in shadows. These tv's have great light output and contrast so you dont have to have the contrast up soo high. By turning the iris all the way down and the auto iris on high your tv will produce the blackest blacks possible and with the contrast setting at the right level you will not crush your blacks providing you turn the gamma settings to medium because this counters the very black blacks by still showing the low to medium level shadow detail. Let me give you an example if you try these settings on say oblivion and you look at a tree branch you will see how the branch will appear dark but look closer and you can see dark as it is you can see that it is a dark green not a black. With your contrast up to high and your
black level too low the tree branch will appear black because the higher you turn up contrast the higher you have to turn up black level to not lose shadow detail.
When you turn the iris down and the auto iris all the way up the tv contrast ratio is around 13000:1. That is plenty. One more thing these settings wont be accurate if you turn power saving mode on. Hope this helps out any other SXRD owners out there and give them a try you can always change them back if you dont like it.
Here's my settings for a Sony 60XS955 LCD rear-projection:
Mode - pro
pic - 53
bright- 34
color - 32
hue - 0
sharp - 42
temp. - warm
noise red. - low
mild - off
live color - low
clear white - off
detail enhance - med
black correction - high *
gamma correction - high *
white balance - all 0s
* these two settings really push the picture, making the colors pop. For anything else I wouldn't do this, but with video games I'm a sucker for vibrant colors and the deepest blacks I can get while still seeing in dimly lit areas.

atomheart2000 05-16-06, 12:04 PM Hi there. Long time lurker, first time poster.
I'm going mad trying to get the right settings for my 970 with my 360.
Does anyone have 970 settings they wish to share? Generally, the screen is too dark overall. I would greatly appriciate someone's settings and/or help. I know I can make this TV look better than it is!
Thanks so much,

JohnnytheSkin 05-27-06, 01:49 PM Anyone use avia through the 360 to calibrate? If so how did it work?
I've used both DVE and GetGray and found that the settings are way off. Since the 360 outputs only 480p for DVD playback, and the games are HD, it's expected. I did however use te 480p settings for my PS2 settings and they look GREAT!
The best bet is to download the NBA Live 06 demo off of the Marketplace or rent that or FIFA World Cup or PGR3 and use the test pattern there. With the EA pattern (Live and FIFA) you can get a very good black level, they have a grayscale for tinting issues, and I use the THX blue glasses for color as well. All I have to do is eyeball the contrast using the grayscale. I know it's not perfect, and the settings aren't perfect across all my games (I up the brightness one notch in-game for 'Oblivion' and 'Ghost Recon'), but it's a start...since the pattern is HD.
Good luck!

You don't notice that the brighter things all become white with contrast this high?
I notice it mostly on the boot up xbox logo.
I have a Sony KV-34XBR800. I'll give an example of what's happening, since I don't know the proper term. I was calling it "ghosting" but I looked up that definition but it doesn't appear to be what I'm experiencing:
In dark scenes the brighter objects leave an image. It can be something stationary, like a street light, that when the scene progresses the "ghost" of the street light is still there. Also it can be seen with a moving bright object, like someone walking with a white shirt on, and you can see the image trailing behind them.
It's very distracting and only occurs when watching movies (DVD or HD through Media Center) or playing games on the 360. None of my other input sources exhibit this behavior. I ran the 360 through Avia when I first got it (just like th rest of my sources). Any idea how I can change my settings to remedy this?

graviton13 06-27-06, 05:35 PM If you guy's want the absolute best picture for your Sony's, Samsung's or whatever, then you should invest in "Digital Video Essentials", it's a calibration disc that just about anyone can use with a dvd player. It cost about $30.00 online and it will make your dvd's, regular and high-definition tv and most importantly your Xbox games look more realistic!!!! If you want to go one-step further there's a kit that you can buy "datacolor's spyder tv", hook it up to your laptop and do a professional grade calibration!!!!!

Can a 4805 projector owner be so kind and post his/her settings? I searched thru 40 pages of the Official 4805 thread and didn't see any there. Thank you. And do you recommend the vga cable? Is it really better than component cables?
Aurelian 07-01-06, 12:00 AM Question, if you have a 1080p display, and you set the XBox to display 1080i, won't you then be viewing the games in 1080p, since the display will be de-interlacing the signal?
There's still a noticeable difference, though it's slighter than the difference between 480i and 480p. De-interlacing often creates "sawtooth" distortion artifacts and hurts fast-action scenes, so movement in games won't look quite as good as 1080p even though a still image comparison would seem very similar.
Don't be afraid to get a 1080p and X360 together. Just recognize that the console won't provide the best picture possible to the TV.

jonesad 08-05-06, 03:12 PM Anybody with a Panasonic TH-42px60u?
Hello, I have the Panasonic TH-42PX500U (last years model), and I currently run my 360 at 1080i. I know everyone says u should run it closer to your native resoution, but when I run it at 720p I find the main interface doesn't look as "sharp". Also, I won't post my color settings because I had it calibrated by Greg Lowen of Lions AV and he did a lot of things inside the service menu which changes the overall look.
There's still a noticeable difference, though it's slighter than the difference between 480i and 480p. Any suggestions or possible work arounds for this? I have some serious "sawtooth" issue with my 1080P projector, its bumming me out.
Okay, please disregard my previous post because I am quite possibly the biggest noob to ever post on this forum. While furiously trying to fix this problem with the sawtooth I went back into the system settings for the 360 and lo and behold, they put a cute little switch on the cable to go from TV to HDTV that i have never before thrown..... Needless to say, its fixed now and looks amazing.
brisc0... you aren't the first to miss that little switch in the back.
As much as I love the 360, sometimes I wonder about some of the choices they make in the menus, interface, etc... I think Microsoft lives in their own world, they talk their own language and assume the rest of the world thinks like them and understands their way of doing things.
That's not a knock on MS, just me stating that I often get confused trying to do simple things on MS hardware and software. Maybe it's just me....

Sharpness 20

Black Corrector off
Gamma Low

Does anyone have settings for the 360 on a Samsung LN-S3292D? Settings for a 4092 or 4692 would also work.
Right now I'm using my 360 via component:
Mode: movie
Contrast: 92
Brightness: 40
Sharpness: 20
Color: 40
Color temp: Warm 2
Digital NR: off
Energy savings mode: off
It looks OK but I don't think the colors are accurate. I used the THX Optimizer but got an extremely dark and overly color saturated picture and corrected it by eyeballing it.
Another question... should I be using the component video cables or VGA cable with the 3292D? Which provides a better picture?

Thanks for the info.Your color is on 30?If the 955 is similar to the 970 having the color on 30 would be way to low.Doesnt pro have the least amount of detail?Maybe thats why you have the VM on HIGH.

I have vm on high because it makes the text on the dashboard sharper and it doesnt seem to have any negative impact on in game graphics. The color on my tv is very vibrant without any over saturation. I do have a SFP tube so there may be some diffrence in results for settings on my tv vs yours.

Not sure really what to keep it at myself.
soltan1 09-29-06, 11:14 PM Does anyone have good setting in game mode for my 369 xbox. Also I bought hdmi cables to use and I swear that I was getting better pictures with the cable hookup that the direct tv installer hooked up. The set (samsung 3651) is set to custom and the other settings are blacked out. I orginally had the cable from the hd receiver going to a component box because of other game consoles. Now its going from the hdmi port of the receiver to the hdmi port of my samsung. I know I am jumping around here and asked more than 1 question. Its just that the picture looked better before the hdmi cable, which does not make sense

Note: For ALL of those wondering whether to get the VGA cables, I say get them unless you already have a DVD player that upscales to 720p. 360 via VGA cables upscales DVD's to 720p. Otherwise, I think the colors are a bit sharper through component.
300megashock 10-05-06, 08:43 PM Updated my Sony 42A10 settings:
Sony Grand Wega 42A10 Projection LCD
I calibrated with Avia, and then made some color and black level adjustments with the NBA Live 06' test pattern in 720p, since 480p was a bit off in the color and brightness department compared to 720p (especially brightness, DVD was perfect, but too dark in High Def).
These are my Xbox 360 settings via 1280x720p component.

I am picking up a Mits 65831 this coming thursday, anyone have tried using the new Mits off the 360 yet? I will post my comments as well but I was wondering because the 831 series is supposed to upscale all signals to 1080P. As it is as usual there is little in accesories where I live for the 360 so I just bought the component HD cable with the optical 5.1 out for my soundsurround from Ebay, I hear the HD-DVD player is coming out soon for the 360?
Anyone have settings for Pioneer 5070?
edcokpareke 10-19-06, 11:22 AM Samsung HLS5688W 1080P.
Xbox 360 Connected via VGA.
A lot of people talk about calibrating and how contrast should be set low. Well I've tried these settings and they just do not work right for me with the VGA connection. I found that I was straining my eyes, and that the picture was somewhat dull and blurry.
I went ahead and switched on "Game mode", turned my contrast waaaay up (like 98%), and set the brightness down to like 40% or so. Now the image is truly amazing. I don't know what people are talking about when they tell you to set your contrast down to the 20's or 30's, but I'd beg to differ.
Had a glance across the few pages and I didn't happen to come across any recommended video adjustments/settings for Sony 34" KV-34HS510/XBR910 displays. I'm currently going through Splinter Cell Double Agent and based on UBISoft's test settings, the game seems overly bright. Dark shadowed areas do look dark at all and Sam Fisher always looks like he's standing clearly visible in front of various enemies.
Any thoughts? I'd love any recommendations on what video settings seem near dead on.
emgoodman 10-22-06, 12:19 PM I have the Samsung HLS5086W DLP. Games looked great via component and VGA (I thought slightly better on VGA). Movies however do not look very good through VGA even though the 360 upscales to 720P through that connection. I definitely am seeing what I think others describe as "washed out." I particulary notice blues are unaturally bright. I'd switch back to component but didn't want to loose the upscaling. So, in short looking for settings help. Also if I adjust the settings for movie playback is there a good chance that I won't like what it does to the games?
Thanks, Eric
Jamfan16 10-28-06, 03:51 PM I'm curious about 720p vs 1080i experiences...
And settings for the Panasonic AE900U projector via component. IMO the default Pana settings are too dark.
When I was using component, I set 2 different memory presets - one for games and the other for movies. For games I had to sort of "wing it" (I used an LCD via VGA as a comparison), since I don't think the 360 uses the same settings for games as it does with movies, making a calibration DVD sort of useless. For movies, I used a buddy's calibration DVD (I forget what it was). Anyways, here are the settings that I thought worked well.
For Games
Dynamic
Contrast -6
Bright +26
Color -9
Tint 0
Sharpness 0
Color Temp +2
Dynamic Iris OFF
NR ON
For Movies
Normal
Contrast +8
Bright -1
Color -10
Tint +1
Sharpness -2
Color Temp 0
Dynamic Iris ON
NR ON
Right now I'm using Avia to try and get VGA on the AE900U calibrated. It's looking like it will yield a better picture - dark scenes in games are looking better already. If anyone has any settings they use, please post them.

Rusty Barr 11-21-06, 09:19 AM I just bought the XBOX 360 HD-DVD add on. I'm wondering what my settings should be now for my SONY Grand Wega KF-50WE610
I think I read in the past that my TV's native resolution is 788p (1386 x 788)? Currently I've got the XBOX 360 set to 720p and I am using the "official" (LOL) Monster XBOX 360 component cables
I really don't want to have to switch between two different picture tweak set ups and I was hoping there might be a solid choice for watching both HD-DVD's and also playing games like Gears of War
Thanks in advance!

Tapiozona 12-07-06, 02:32 AM Has anyone had the problem where the xbox 360's picture is shifted to the left rather than centered in the screen? It's not drastic but the whole picture seems to be pushed about an inch to the left and in certain games the HUD or some text will be unviewable. This is using a standard tv. The shift improves somewhat if I use good old RCA cables rather than the component ones but its still not centered.

Hello everyone,
1) I just got a Sharp 42" 1080p on Weds, I was wondering if anyone has some settings for this TV.
2) Last night when watching the NFL football game I was noticing motion blur / ghosting / lag, what should I be looking for in the settings to try and get rid of this. Even when running King Kong (HD-DVD) I notice some flicker granite I'm running in 1080i cause MS has yet to release a HDMI cable. I have the TV hooked up via HDMI from the Dish Network VIP211. Could the cable be bad? is the VIP211 a crappy unit? Could my set be bad? Please help !!!
P.S. - I had a 27" CRT HDTV before this and I know the picture on the LCD will never look as good as that but my picture during sporting events is not that good.

Try auto adjusting if not than just adjust your display so it will be centered.

Fight Night R3
NBA2K7
even messed around with component and vga connections. All games looks really good except for NBA2K7. I mean it looks good but the players look too sharp for some reason.
Have you tried using the component? Using the vga on this TV the colors are clearly washed out and the picture looks softer, not as defined.
How were you able to change the sharpness settings on VGA? My TV is at 50.
This pic was taken before I switched to VGA, sorry for the mix-up. Right, my sharpness, color and tint options are all greyed out and locked at 50....
Go to your tv setting and change from there.
Not as easy as it sounds......
On Samsung 4XXX LCD series monitors (tv's) the VGA input is processed as a PC input, and therefore minute settings and fine tuning is done via the pc.... Unless there is a way for an owner to get into the service menu then that option is not available....

saregister 12-18-06, 01:43 PM anyone know if this jury-rigged setup will work and give me the 1080p output i so highly desire from the 360:
get a VGA cable for the 360. Use the VGA cable to attach to a VGA-DVI-d adapter, then from the DVI-d to HDMI. Will this pass through the 1080p signal?
I have the SXRD 55A2000 and can only accept 1080p via HDMI. Stupid Microsoft needs to get their act together and finally just make an HDMI cable for the 360 so i can stop dreaming of rigging things up!
JackBau3r 12-18-06, 02:25 PM I forgot to mention I'm on VGA... How does 85 contrast and 52 brightness feel to you? What about warm1 instead of normal?
I don't own a 360, so no VGA cable for me, but I do have a similiar TV, except my is the LNR238 version. 85 may be a bit low, because the lighting in some games doesn't fully shine, like in Motorstorm for Playstation 3. I have to crank up the contrast to 100.

Contrast is at 100? Jesus. I'm probably wrong but isn't that bad for the TV? Brightness is pretty high too.
Its a LCD and not vulnerable to burn-in. I was also to get better picture after setting the energy saving level to high. This puts the backlights at the lowest brightness and gives you the best black levels.
JackBau3r 12-18-06, 07:03 PM how do you set the backlight and what did you put it on to?
So would you guys say that generally you should try to have higher brightness and lower contrast to get truer blacks? I tried setting the Contrast to max, but then I get over dark blacks, crushed. So bringing down the contrast makes it look a lil bit more normal, but then I have to up the brightness because then the whole picture looks too dark... any suggestions?
JadedRsx 12-21-06, 02:48 PM how do you set the backlight and what did you put it on to?
In the setting menu for the Samsung LNS-3241D there's a energy save mode. Set it to high for the lowest backlight.

Leave DNIE and DNR off for everything but maybe SD TV signals. Also leave game mode off as it throws off the color pallet.
The settings I gave are the closest you can get to calibration without actually getting and ISF technician to come to your house.

You plug it in right next to the VGA input. Make sure you have a jack for your white and yellow cable.

Actually there is a service menu tweak that you can try..... check the Sammy owner's thread to find it... I need to take a better photo, that one does not do it justice...
Which thread's that in, there's a few?
Hello All,
I have the Samsung 6187 with the Xbox 360 and the Hd-Dvd add-on connected to my television through the VGA connection. I was curious what settings most people would recommend for the Vga mode. I know you can only adjust the contrast and brightness settings as well the color tone when you are using the VGA mode. I'd love to hear what people use for the best picture for watching HD-dvds.
Thank you in advance.

I have the Vizio L32 and I just purchased the VGA for my XBOX 360. I was wondering, how can I get a 1080i resolution from the VGA? When I set the resolution to 1920X1080 it gives me a message that the signal is not supported. Can anyone help me with this matter?
One more thing..
Can someone tell me the best calibration setting for this TV?
Thank You in advance!!!

anyone have any good setting for the mits 65732 using the vga/dvi cable. it look sgrayed out or washed out the tv settings are basic in the pc mode any suggestions?
I played around a little with lowering the brightness (18) and adjusting the contrast (36) to where it was sort of acceptable. However I discovered a more fundamental problem with the VGA connection - overscan. I am unable to determine exactly how much but I am guessing I lose approximately 5% of the picture on each side. This is easily visible when working with the Media Center interface.
The overscan issue has put me off significantly and I am currently back to a component connection from the XBox 360 to the Mitusbishi WD-65732. Has anybody else here seen these overscan issues and managed to fix them for the Mitsu & XBox 360? With a direct PC connection I have options of managing the overscan from the graphic card controls. I couldnt find anything similar on the XBox 360. Any ideas?

You need to go into your service menu, turn off overscan, gamma and cinema gamma to 0, adjust the iris to closed and then put SB Gain on 160, turn DNIe off (if you prefer). Then power off, power on, your set should be at Dynamic, put the contrast down to 90 and everything else should be fine (Brightness is already at 45). I did that for my S5687 and it is looking pretty good.

Note: For ALL of those wondering whether to get the VGA cables, I say get them unless you already have a DVD player that upscales to 720p. 360 via VGA cables upscales DVD's to 720p. Otherwise, I think the colors are a bit sharper through component.
Is that for the Westy 42" LVM-42W2 1080p?

DeezNuts420 01-31-07, 11:48 AM Hello all. I am brand new to the site and need some assistance. I bought a Samsung HL-S5086W this past friday, and I need some help calibrating the picture with an XBOX360. I bought the Monster Cable Component Video cables, and the picture looks remarkable. But it is still lacking. I have the console set at 720p. Should I use Game Mode? What about DNR? Please advise.
P.S. I have also heard that this set has lag issues with game systems. Has anyone had experience with this problem, or have any other input for this set in particular??
Thanks!

Return the Monster cables and get the MS VGA connection. -Game mode yes- DNR no
AND no Lag issues. For a remarkable picture, what is lacking?
DeezNuts420 01-31-07, 05:12 PM Kevinw. Why do you recommend VGA over Component? Why MS cables over Monster?
What about DNIe? Do you own this TV? If so, how did you calibrate it?
Sorry about all of the questions. The reason I say the TV is still lacking is because it looks....soft. The image doesn't look very sharp. I have been looking into the SPYDER2 for calibrating, but not sure if I want to drop that kind of money just yet. This is my first HDTV/DLP so I am kinda green. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes I do own it, Monster is a waste of money, I prefer VGA although nothing wrong with the component cables that came with the 360. Actually component give richer colors with this tv vs HDMI or VGA.
I used AVIA mixed with the recomendations of Eliab in this threadSAMSUNG 720p owners thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=671006)
DeezNuts420 02-03-07, 05:03 PM I made the plunge and grabbed the Microsoft VGA cables last night. After searching 6 store's including Circuit City and Best buy, I snatched the last one of of the shelf at a Meijer 30 miles from my house. And it was worth it. These cables gave me the picture I was looking for. It took roughly 10 minutes to fine tune the tv after hook up, and 10 minutes after that I packaged up my week old Monster Component cables to return to the store. There is absolutely NO COLOR WASH on my set(Samsung HL-S5086W) The upconverting of DVD's to 720p is worth the admission alone. Game's have a sharper look, and movies look near HD. VERY HAPPY!

what makes you think you need VGA cables to view a 1080p picture on the Samsung? The HLSxx87/88 upconverts any signal you send it via HDMI, component or VGA to its native 1080p resolution. Period. It does not matter what the source signal is, the TV upconverts it to 1080p. You can of course have some up conversion done at the source if it is capable of that, all the way up to 1080p in the case of something like an upconverting DVD player. YOu may think you get a better picture using one or the other of the connections, but they are all being viewed in 1080p on the display.
I have heard that the VGA on the xBox is not as good as the component, but that is not from personal experience. Also, if memory serves me right, the xBox will only send a 720p signal over VGA, whereas it will send both 720p and 1080i over the component. I am speaking of games on the stand alone console of course, not using the HD DVD add on.

I agree.
I just got the VGA cable yesterday, and tried it out last night on my new Sammy LN-S3251d. I have to say it was worth it. Everything looks slightly better than with the component cables, and I like the upscaling of my regular dvds. (For some reason when I use my regular Sony DVD player on this TV via component, the movies look bad. Pixelated, bad colors...can't figure out why though. They looked great on my 30" Phillips CRT HDTV. Is this common?) - Back on topic...
My games look better (no wash out and I never knew just how much overscan the component cables were producing to this tv. It's a big difference with the VGA cable!!

They are under the PC frequency settings or something, I forget the exact menu but it's there. I think it's under the PC Setup where you do the auto adjustment.
wardrum 02-22-07, 08:45 PM What is the tweak you can do for the sammy lcds so that the colors dont look washed out using vga. Someone vaguely mentioned it but can anyone be more specific? thank you.
rpoulos 02-22-07, 09:23 PM I'm using the Sony 60a2000 SXRD...I have both a PS3 and a 360...PS3 is running HDMI 1080p, 360 is running component 1080i.
I used Avia to calibrate both inputs...settings are same except brightness is about 10 clicks different...not sure if it has to do with the HDMI versus component or what.
PS3 brightness is set about 10 clicks higher than the 360 and produces similar brightness. Now what's really interesting is that when playing games, the brightness looks similar on each...when playing standard def DVDs the brightness is also similar, but when comparing an hd dvd to a blu ray disc the brightness looks much higher on the blu ray than on the hd dvd.
Again this could be due to the HDMI vs. component hookups...
Anyway, here are the settings I'm using for the 360
Contrast-85
Brightness-45
Color-50
Hue-Center
Sharpness-40
Iris-Auto 2
Gamma-Med
White Balance
-2
-1
0
-3

All other advanced settings I have set to off
They are under the PC frequency settings or something, I forget the exact menu but it's there. I think it's under the PC Setup where you do the auto adjustment.
I know where they are... but what are they? What is their specific function and what do they affect?
FuriousJodo 02-23-07, 05:35 PM I'm not really sure, I didn't play with them too much. I think the biggest adjustment is making sure you do the Auto Adjustment in the menus while running a game on the system, that way it seems to get it right and it looks gorgeous.

Schwack 03-29-07, 12:24 PM Hey All,
Last week I bought a Sony 46XBR3. 2 nights ago I hooked up my 360 with the included Compenent cables. A buddy of mine (who has an older Rear Projected Sony with his 360) helped me connect the cables, etc.., and to my suprise, when I attempted to upgrade my display settings (in the dashboard) to 720, 1080i, or 1080p, my screen flickered and I couldn't see sh*t. We double checked the cables input (I used the Video 5 slot) and we couldn't get to a higher resolution.
Now, my Xbox 360 is up to date in regards to the patches and I did toggle the "HDTV" switch on the cable as well.
Why can't I get at least 1080I? I know there's been debate on whether I could get 1080p on my Sony set with compenent cables but I thought the answer was yes. I know I have the option in using VGA cables but I want to try it with comp. cables first.
Am I doing something wrong? I consider myself a techie guy and updated on this ongoing issue with Xbox and Sony TVs, however, I thought I double checked everything.
I appreciate any feedback and suggestions!
Thanks!

Are you getting a picture in 480i/480p?
Have you tried another input? (Input 6?)
Also, I don't know if this makes any difference, but do you have the screen size set to widescreen?

Bld93,
We actually thought of that and will do it to see if there's a difference, but no, currently they're plugged in Input 5 and I could movie them to Input 6 just to test.
Yes, I have it in widescreen AND I can see the game in 480 mode. That's what's so weird (at least to me) is that I can see 480 so I would think I have the cables plugged in the matching color slots. However, even if I try to upgrade to 720, the screen flickers and I can't see anything.
By the way, I did contact MS Help Desk and they emailed me the common instructions from the book. I already had this info. So I'm going to follow up, again, with them.
Thanks for your help -- any other ideas? Is there another TV Setting that I'm missing?

I would try the other input, just for kicks... :D
Other than that, I don't really know. You might just have a bad cable.
My TV (Samsung) was pretty much plug 'n play, so I don't know what else it could be. It sounds like you've just about done everything you need to.
Sorry I can't be more help. Hope you get it figured out!
Schwack 03-29-07, 07:23 PM Bld93,
Ugh. That's what I'm somewhat afraid of -- bad cable. Granted, it's only $30 but still it's a bummer that a 1 year old cable is already bad.
That's what I was thinking -- I should plug the cable and ta-da...1080i display!! Well, I'll move the cables to Input 6 and see what happens.
Thanks man.

Although I see this only as a band-aid solution, I turn the 360 off, unplug the cable from the console and re-plug it in. I turn the 360 on and then I get 1080i. The next day, I turn it on and it has reverted back to 480i.
Any insights here and/or should I go with the HD vga-dvi connection instead.
I'd still like to know why it reverts from 1080i back to 480i.......

GIBBS v2 04-29-07, 12:11 AM I was wondering what kind of connector cable, Component or VGA do you guys prefer or feel gives a better performance from the 360? I didn't think the component feed looked to hot on my Samsung LNT4665F so i am considering buying the $40 VGA cable, do you think it will matter? What benefits if any will I get?
I am looking for less aliasing along edges of my games specifically. Halo 2 in my opinion (an older game yes but my favorite) and Gears of War have weird too sharp edges and this pixel flicking thats making me crazy.
Thanks

Gary Berry 05-24-07, 11:32 PM To fix the washed out look on the sammy lcd's through VGA, goto say channel 1 or any channel, goto the menu and then to the "My colour control" option and set it to "blue". What happens is that this option is enabled all the time on all modes on the tv, you wont notice it on anything else but "pc" mode loses the washed out look.
For this to work everytime, you cannot turn on the sammy by pressing the "pc" button on the remote, put it on another channel first THEN switch it to "pc" mode.
Enjoy great colour through VGA!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
Shopping for my set up hope to report a good outcome!
perpetual 06-04-07, 10:22 PM I have a Samsung HLS 6187 DPL and the 360 connected to the VGA input. My question is what picture setting in the 360 are people with my same set using, STANDARD, MIDDLE(forgot the correct term), or EXTENDED. Does anyone know whether this tv is expecting a PC signal (0 - 255) or regular video in the VGA input? Thanks.
I have my 360 hooked up to this tv and it looks great!
TheCableMan 06-15-07, 06:14 PM any suggestions for a HLS 5075 DLP with 360 component. I tried a few suggeting in the Samsung DLP thread but there mostly good for normal tv viewing or movies.
Any sugg would help. Thanks

Our TV's are similar, I'd be happy to post my specs for you, and let you try to fine tune them to the liking of your own personal taste.....

I just got an HLS-4266W, I know it is different from the on guys, but I just use the game mode, and am fine with how colors look in its current state.
As for the component or vga, I just got VGA yesterday, and I think it does look better. Plus, apparently if you use the VGA, your 360 can upconvert DVDs all the way to 1080p rather than just 480p like with the component.
HailTheHD 07-12-07, 02:36 PM With the calibration programs like thx optimizer, avia, digital video essentials etc. which is the best one to use. Also does 6500k color temp apply to gaming? My 52xbr is near 6500k but just looks wrong. I was playing gears of war and saw my gun counter yellow. It turned me off.
dangerdavedsp 07-12-07, 02:47 PM anyone here have a 5080hd and if you do can you please post your settings?

HailTheHD 07-13-07, 01:12 PM There apparently is a quick way to calibrate. Leave all the extras at default. Go through your DVD collection until you see a THX DVD with a the optimizer on it. Run the optimizer and that will do temporarily. And color temperature is personal choice.
IrishLegend 07-13-07, 02:17 PM How about a Samsung HL-T6187S via component 360 settings? Are the VGA cables actually worth it?
Could anyone help me out with the settings on a Sammy HLR5067W? I'm running the 360 through VGA with Game mode on. Thanks in advance.
I have an HLS5087, not sure if applies specifically to you, but it will help others with my TV and gives you some advice.
Well start by taking 'game mode' off, it just gives you incorrect color output. Pretty much makes everything look very "gamy, cartoony". If you want more accurate results to make things look more realistic, go with Movie mode. If you want to have good black levels and have things a tad bit colorful and not pale looking, go with Standard mode.
"Movie"
Contrast : 46
Brightness : 57
Color Temp: Warm1
with Extended mode on

Thanks for the help, but these settings just didn't seem to work for my tv. The Sammy DLP just seems too dark for it's own good. I find myself having to crank up the brightness in most games in-game options. By the time I can see everything properly in most games everything looks ridiculously over saturated.

jaxcarlson2 07-26-07, 09:14 AM FYI - there will be a $20 price drop on the HD DVD drive for the 360, and starting August 1 you can get 5 free HD DVDs when you buy the player.

elvtendge 07-27-07, 12:19 PM Hi all, I just recently bought the Samsung HPT4254 plasma. I bought the VGA cable recommended by a friend of mine. I've hooked up the 360 to my computer monitor so I know the cable works. When I tried last night to goto to the plasma it says "signal not supported" I called Samsung tech support and the guy told me the resolution was wrong. I hung up with him, and tried all resolutions and still no luck. I was plugging and unplugging cables like crazy. I called back tech support and the lady says she doesnt think the 360 can be used on the TV via VGA. She checked with tier 2 tech support and informed me they would only provide support if it was HDMI or component and to contact the manufacturer of the cables.
Can this TV support the 360 via VGA or not? anyone done this on this TV?
HailTheHD 08-03-07, 12:07 PM Does anyone have settings for a XBOX 360 on a KDL-52XBR2/3 TV on 1080p?
Thanks.
latinrage69 08-03-07, 03:17 PM since nobody put up the setting for this model, i thought i'd put up my settings for those that own this set.

Just more curious than anything. But why do you guys have such a high contrast. I see people with say 49 brightness and then there contrast is at 80 or something. Your just ruining the picture by making the picture look brighter instead of actually turning brightness up. If you have brightness set at say 50 your contrast should be at 60-65.
IgnoringMyWife 08-05-07, 03:26 PM Is anyone running their xbox360 off a front projection LCD? I have a Sony vpl-x1000u and I'm just curious if anyone has any tips for optimizing this kind of setup.

well i used the thx optimizer from the incredibles dvd and the xbox is using a vga connection with the reference levels set to expanded. with the reference levels set to standard, the colors would have been washed out. the component cables have different settings and the blacks are better than the standard reference black levels on the vga, but comparable to the black levels of the expanded reference levels. the vga provides 1:1 pixel mapping so the image is slightly sharper than the image through component cables.
remember, these numbers are the result of thx optimizer, not avia or dve.
