Can't tell from specs on LG web site. Can it be made region free easily? Does it have a PAL-to-NTSC converter? Can't tell from specs on LG web site. Can it play MP3s from a DVD or just from a CD? According to specs on LG web site it does DVD-Audio but as there are no 5.1ch analog outputs then it is probably via HDMI like the new Panny S52. iqwertyi 05-17-06, 10:23 AM Looks like a tray from the pic. Dreamcat 05-17-06, 06:32 PM I found another website where a person who bought this model already said it has a slot loader and the upscale over component code does not work on it. WaldorfSalad 05-18-06, 08:39 PM I saw this player in BB today. On the box it states that is has a slot loader but it definitely has a tray (plugged it in, powered it up, opened the tray and put a DVD in it). Hooked it up to a TV using HDMI and put in a region-free PAL DVD. It played it just fine so that would imply that it has a PAL-to-NTSC converter like previous models. I have no idea if the player can be made region free though using publicized hacks. It definitely does not have 5.1ch analog outputs so DVD-Audio would be over HDMI like the new Panny S97. I would not expect upconverting to work over component without the hack. zrdb 05-18-06, 09:25 PM Here's the story on this player-none of the 418 or 511 hacks except the one for the information screen work on this unit, it will upscale xvid/divx and unprotected dvds through the componet output, it has a Zoran Vadis 888 chipset, my experiance was that the 12 bit 110mhz video dacs didn't really make much of an improvment in the picture quality. It appears that it doesn't support as long of xvid/divx file names as the 511 or 418. I took it back and will continue to use both my 418 and 511. What I really want is a player that handles h.264. And it isn't a slot loader, it has a tray. Mofongo 05-19-06, 01:21 PM Zrdb, The Zoran Vaddis is the same chipset line that Samsung has used for years, since it has the "ZoranZoom" feature which I believe Samsung's EZ-View feature makes use of. I really want something like EZ-View, but have been disappointed in Samsungs DVD players otherwise. I would really like to know if LG made use of this feature of the Vadis 888. Did you happen to check the DN191H to see if it can zoom to get rid of the black bars above and below a 2.39:1 movie, but still maintain image quality? I tried downloading the manual from LG's website, but none of their DVD player manuals will download for me. (very weird). Thanks! Mofongo zrdb 05-19-06, 08:02 PM Yes it does-although LG calles it by a different name (can't remember what is called though as I only had the player for 2 days). Mofongo 05-23-06, 11:18 PM zrdb, since you also post to the Sony DVP-NS75H board, do you also have a Sony NS75H (or 85H)? If so, how would you compare it to the DN191H and/or LDA-511? Thanks! Mofongo zrdb 05-24-06, 09:39 AM To be honest I use my LDA-511 and 418 primarily for xvid/divx which is where they excell, I use my 85 for most of my regular dvd watching because it'll play just about any thing that you can load in it, it has a really nice picture on my 27" crt hdtv, it'll play every home made dvd that I've put in it. Don't get me wrong-both of the LG's are excellent players-they display upscaled avi excellently. Mofongo 05-24-06, 11:10 PM Thanks! Another quick questions (sorry to keep asking, but if LG would put a manual on their #!#!@ website, then I could look this up myself). I just got my Samsung DVD-HD960 (1080p output) in the mail today. It does a really good job except with "mosquito noise". It has a noise filter setting, but it still does not seem to tackle the noise as well as my laptop can with ffdshow filters. I know that the Sony has settings for two different kinds of noise (mosquito and something else). Do you remember what kinds of settings the DN191H had for noise reduction? Thanks again! Mofongo zrdb 05-24-06, 11:38 PM None. Bud-man 05-25-06, 10:12 AM Hey zrdb, your say your sony plays everything?, well we know it doesnt play xvid, what about PAL? zrdb 05-25-06, 08:56 PM Nope-strictly NTSC. WaldorfSalad 05-26-06, 12:33 AM I tossed a region-free PAL DVD into an LG191 at BB and it played it just fine. Edit: Oops, never mind, looks like this thread drifted into discussion of Sony players (which don't do PAL). :o Tweak48 05-29-06, 08:05 PM I found another website where a person who bought this model already said it has a slot loader and the upscale over component code does not work on it. I needed a down and dirty replacement for my 7 year old Toshiba that puiked yesterday morning. I went for the LG-DN191H because BB had a $10 instant rebate on it, an additional 10% coupon at the door, and it's one of the few DVD players out there that will do upscaling via the component video jacks. It's driving a 37" Panny ED industrial plasma, and as you may know industrial Pannys don't come with a ton of inputs (like no HDMI or DVI jacks; you want one you pay for one). Pros: *good color balance *fairly sharp at 1080i through the component outputs (I don't know why it would be given the ED's native resolution is lower than that) *good sound in the simulated surround mode (it's in a 2 channel system) *easy to use remote *cheap to buy Cons: *cheap loading tray *cheap remote *image seems slightly dark on some movies jliles 05-29-06, 08:46 PM For those of you who've used this player, can you answer a few questions? I have a player with the previous version of the upscaling Zoran chip (the 778, I think), and it is capable of playing Nero Digital MP4 files with standard profile. Can this player do that? Do .mp4 files even appear in the file browser? Also, since the previous version of the chip properly handled divx/xvid aspect ratios correctly, I'm guessing this one does too, but if someone would confirm this for me that would be great. Does this new chip play DivX 6 ultra features like menus and chapter stops (not really necessary for me, just curious). Also, when playing commercial DVDs using HDMI and 1080i or 720p resolutions, does it pillarbox 4:3 material or stretch it on a widescreen TV? My current player stretches the image and it is incredibly annoying. Thanks for your help... Julie Huey 05-29-06, 09:28 PM Dear Tweak48, you mean to tell me that the LG-DN191H can upconvert via component on copy-protected DVD's without any hacks? If so it's truely unique. scrapdiggs 05-29-06, 10:07 PM Dear Tweak48, you mean to tell me that the LG-DN191H can upconvert via component on copy-protected DVD's without any hacks? If so it's truely unique. Nope. It only upconverts to 480p...unfortunately I just found that out after just buying it. Dammit! Does the 511 do this as well? scrapdiggs 05-30-06, 12:11 AM Anyone know if there is a HACK to get this upconvert to work to 720p on the DN191H? I must say that it does kick out the nicest 480p picture ive seen yet however. I did buy it for the upscaling though. Tweak48 05-30-06, 12:14 AM Dear Tweak48, you mean to tell me that the LG-DN191H can upconvert via component on copy-protected DVD's without any hacks? If so it's truely unique. So far I've played a couple of DVDs and they've worked great at 1080, but I don't know what ones are copy protected and what ones are not. On the other thread it mentioned that Disney discs are protected, so I'll give that a try. HD-Dummy 05-30-06, 09:24 PM I'm thinking of buying this DVD player tomorrow. I just saw it at BB today and it's on sale so I figured I'd give LG a shot. I'm not a videophile, not in the least, but I do want a smooth picture on my 5067w. I plan on connecting it via HDMI cable and hooking my STB up via components since my box outputs 720p over either component or HDMI. I'll post my impressions of it tomorrow evening but I doubt it plays protected disks via component even though it has 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i written right under the component output. I'll let you guys know. scrapdiggs 05-30-06, 09:56 PM As ive already said, this does not upconvert protected discs to anything more than 480p, ive got one right now in my theater. HD-Dummy 05-30-06, 10:11 PM As ive already said, this does not upconvert protected discs to anything more than 480p, ive got one right now in my theater. Chilli Fries (or, as is more common, cool beans). I'm still getting this player tomorrow, tho, and I hope to find some hacks for it. I doubt the 511 hacks work (I believe someone posted they didn't) so I'll have to keep my ear to the ground and try and find someone who knows the hacks for this model. scrapdiggs 05-30-06, 10:16 PM Chilli Fries (or, as is more common, cool beans). But ive only spent a week trying to find them, if you do find them let us all know. zrdb 05-31-06, 08:03 AM I'm thinking of buying this DVD player tomorrow. It's connected over HDMI at 720p (I couldn't see a difference between 720p and 1080i so I left it on the HL-R5067w's native resolution). The PQ is really good; much better so than my old Panasonic (it was about 5 years old and wasn't even progressive scan, tho). The sound is so-so, but I'm not complaining. I have not connected it to my receiver yet so I don't know if it will have lip-sync issues. I'll test that out when I get a digital coax cable (I somehow broke mine). I'd give the player 4 out of 5 stars and, for the price, you can't really beat it. WaldorfSalad 05-31-06, 02:12 PM Does this DVD player have an option to pillar-box (Normal mode) 4:3 content at the DVD end to accomodate the case whereby your TV won't let you choose Normal mode when sending 720p or 1080i over HDMI? Unfortunately the manual is not yet available on the LG web site so I can't RTFM to get the answer. HD-Dummy 06-05-06, 10:57 AM I guess nobody's figured out any hacks for this player yet. I've done Google searches but I cannot find anything. I know that LG is a rebranded something else (maybe Zenith???) so if anyone knows maybe we can find some hacks for the player it's rebranded from. I'm not an expert on this, far from it, but I'd like to customize my player with a few hacks if they're available. Anywho, I hope someone finds some soon. scrapdiggs 06-05-06, 11:17 AM I guess nobody's figured out any hacks for this player yet. LOL.....as we already said. zrdb 06-05-06, 11:26 AM Which is why I'm gonna stick with my 418 and 511 for now-even though I just got an hdtv with an hdmi input I still like the smoother look of 1080I in componet. HD-Dummy 06-05-06, 03:22 PM LOL.....as we already said. Yeay, but it had been a few days so I thought maybe someone would start playing around with their remote control, lol flipside 06-06-06, 07:59 AM Hi im looking at getting a UK version of this player DNX191uh though it has a USB port rather that the card reader, i was wondering if anyone knows if its multiregion blocked or not ? http://uk.lge.com/prodmodeldetail.do?actType=search&page=1&modelCategoryId=030201&categoryId=030201&parentId=0302&modelCodeDisplay=DNX190UH&model=NOTHING Cpo33 06-09-06, 12:39 AM Hi, I am interested to know if this player can zoom the 2.35:1 DVD to get rid of most of the top & bottom black bars (smaller than a x2 zoom which is too much in general) and still provide good PQ quality? I have downloaded the user manual, but all it says is that there are 3 zoom steps without saying anything about it. The older model LD511 only provides x4/x16 zoom and is no good. Thanks very much. Anyway, according to the manual the zoom mode only work if the HDMI resolution is set to 480p. It won't work if it is set to 720p nor 1080i. If you prefer I can email it to you. WaldorfSalad 06-10-06, 02:17 PM That page uses a Javascript: Download File thingy so its not possible to post a link to the PDF file. You have to a search on "191" or "DN191H" to find it. flipside 06-11-06, 05:16 AM Hi a quick question for those 191H owners out there , the manual for this says If the file is recorded with GMC, the unit supports only 1-point of the record level. Though i have read that 3 point is supported by the Zoran 888 chipset @ wwdivxtest.com or www.mpcclub.com you can get the divxtest cd which contains a good selection of test clips , if anyone knows of other test cd's let me know. Im trying to get my local AV dealer to un box one of these (im in the uk btw) so i can test but there not overly helpfull. What is the bottom line on this player? it looks like it may be a pretty good interim dvd player. WaldorfSalad 06-11-06, 01:28 PM Note: The LG 191 does not have a setting that allows you to pillarbox 4:3 material on a 16:9 TV. This setting is essential if you have a TV that won't let you choose "Normal" when inputting at 720p or 1080i over HDMI and you don't want 4:3 material to be linearly streteched. I recently rejected the Philips 5960 for the same reason. flipside 06-11-06, 04:49 PM Hey disgruntled1 any other suggestions :) , one with decent divx playback and a USB connection would be good wheel301 06-12-06, 01:42 PM Went to pick up the LG-DN191H at Best Buy, but went for the 511 instead, which is now on clearance. They seemed to be selling new and open box 511s for the same price. Cpo33 06-12-06, 09:29 PM Since there is no response to my earlier question regarding the zoom mode, I guess the zoom mode is not that good and probably zoom up too much for just getting rid of top & bottom black bars of 2:35:1 DVD movies (like the x4/x16 zoom in LD511 probably more for zooming up to view JPEG pictures). This player is selling for at a relative expensive price at BB and IMO is not worth the extra money over similar players from panasonic/sony (I don't need DiVX playing capability). Time to look at other player and thread. zrdb 06-12-06, 10:17 PM My 418 died on me-I'm gonna get the Canadian market 531 to replace it-I liked my 418's picture quality. scrapdiggs 06-13-06, 02:25 PM Went to pick up the LG-DN191H at Best Buy, but went for the 511 instead, which is now on clearance. Just curious...the 191 has a tray instead of that awful suction loading. 511 was selling for ninety bucks and seems to have a pretty good rep for divx/xvid. Figured that could hold me until I can get my hands on a reasonably priced HD-DVD or Blu-ray that can also play a range of files, divx, etc. zrdb 06-14-06, 04:38 PM Get rid of the Macrovision on the DVD and the 191 does it to ;) But then I have to rip it with either DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter and burn a copy. scrapdiggs 06-14-06, 04:58 PM But then I have to rip it with either DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter and burn a copy. The problem I have with that player is that I tried 3 of them and all 3 had to go back, it just seemed poorly built unfortunately. Maybe ill try another one but this 191 is indeed doing quite well so far playing the upconverted Ripped vids. zrdb 06-20-06, 11:09 PM My 418 died-I 'm gonna get a Canadian 531 to replace it. hockey2112 06-22-06, 03:27 PM I recently purchased the LG Progressive Scan DN191H DVD player with HD Upconversion. It was a good deal, and I wanted the DiVX playback. The player works pretty well, and I am really enjoying the DiVX and SVCD capabilities. The player had a sticker on the top of it, listing off a few of its main features. In the section listing off its memory card reading capabilities, it lists MS Pro Duo as one of the cards it accepts. However, I soon learned that they do not in fact fit into the memory card slot, and had to (carefully) fish my card out with a pair of tweezers :p . Did the sticker have incorrect info, or am I missing something about how I should have inserted the MS Pro DUO? I also have a camera that uses XD cards, and those pop right into place in the slot. I find that the player plays DiVX files well, but every now and then, it loses audio sync with the video. It remains out of sync until I stop the video and restart it (it restarts where I left off... I just press "stop" once, and then "play"). Is this a problem with the video codec, or do I need to upgrade the firmware of the player? Any other ideas as to why this would be happening? In addition to this, some DiVX movies experience "image breakdown" problems... parts of the image on the screen will drastically pixellate, and will remain that way until the scene changes and the pixellation is essentially "wiped clean". Since this only happens with a few videos, I assume this is an encoding issue as well. FYI, the videos with this problem play back perfectly on my computer. Thanks for any advice and help! flipside 06-23-06, 09:13 AM Hi hockey2112 I have the UK version of this dnx190uh its got a usb port rather than teh media card reader so i cant be much help there but divx wise ive been running some tests using the divxtest cd (http://www.mpcclub.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=6145) and a few files from seemoredigital (http://www.seemoredigital.net/51_Test_Encodes.html) and the only files ive found that do what you have found are those doen using the high bitrate divx settings (for stuttering) and Nero GMC 3 point warp (for teh bleeding) strangly the bleeding doesnt occur with the xvid GMC 3 settings. Its all been a bit slap dash my end but if i get time im going to try and document it properly. Aside from that im finding it a great bit of kit its playing discs my old player and laptop refused and i was pleased to see it came with an HDMI cable we're usually stiffed in the uk when it comes to cableing . All i need to do now is get it to accept a USB HDD device as im sorted Oh in case you need it theres a multiregion hack available at videohelp but still no joy and upscaleing over component though its a new device so im living in hope Matt MikeJ927 06-24-06, 10:39 PM Hey I have a question to people who own this dvd player. I used to have the lg hdtv tuner with dvd player built into it. One great feature it had was the zoom screen fit mode. It was such a good feature because it stretched the top and bottom to eliminate the black bars but it did not remove any of the sides of the picture. I have the new sony and it doesn't have anything good on it to remove the black bars. I was wondering if this new lg player had the screen fit mode. Can someone look in their manuel and see if it talks about it in there or confirm that you have used it? please help wintersfs 06-28-06, 12:03 AM Does anyone have detailed specifications/pinouts/programming guides for the Zoran Vaddis 888 chip in the LG DN191H? (I am not talking about the two page PDF available on their website). I noticed the Arcam DV137 (a $2k DVD player) uses the same chipset, and does not appear to be hindered by the same component out upscaling limitations. It would appear to me the chipset is capable of better, but is being crippled by LG. Just a thought. I own a DN191H, and would be willing to try a few things if I had the right documentation. flipside 06-28-06, 11:24 AM Im not sure if the arcam and lg are direct comparisons as in the arcam Upscaling is handled by and ABT1010 video scaler from Anchor Bay. Though if you can find anyway of bypassing the blocks put in place as was done with the 511 and 418 i for one would sure be happy :) ive just found this yahoo group zorandvd yahoo groyp (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ZoranDVD/) its chat about the zoran 778 chipset/players though it might be a place to start. Thanks Matt wintersfs 06-29-06, 08:17 AM That makes a lot of sense, considering the upscaling capabilities of the arcam player (768p, some others that aren't 480/720/1080). I looked over the Yahoo Group you mentioned; it seems to me that to be able to work on this problem, someone would have to get ahold of firmware for the LG. Another Zoran 888 chipset player, the Tevion 8000, has a firmware update available, but I am not sure how far that would get someone trying to bypass the crippling of component outputs on the LG version. I did try upgrading my LG with this firmware, just for giggles, and the LG wouldn't accept it - which leads me to believe that the Tevion firmware won't help with anything involving button presses to bypass this issues. flipside 06-29-06, 05:23 PM Nice one in trying the Tevion update :) a braver man then me , i guess we'll have to wait and see if LG do anything with this player though here in the UK there seems to be a sudden lack of available units as mine developed (AHEM) a problem , it decided it just wanted to display in black and white, i took it back but i cant find another fro love nor money . I might try posting on the yahoo group and see if i get any responses they might at least know of an Zoran 888 forum in english as all the others ive seen are in German (tevion/medion is a german make i think) in here they are talking about the 888 and firmware mods http://dvdboard.de/forum/showthread.php?t=99807 wintersfs 06-30-06, 03:00 AM Made some progress today. Tried a LOT of old LG codes, and as it turns out the eeprom code works. In summary: 1. Power on 2. Tray closed, no disc 3. Wait for "No Disc", then quickly press PAUSE 1 4 7 2 4. This will display EEPROM: [values] ... left and right switch nibble, PROGRAM then number changes nibble (hold down 1-6 for A-F) 5. PAUSE to save, CLEAR to exit Now, my values were (bytes numbered 0 to 7, left to right): 55 53 00 47 02 55 F4 FF Bytes 0 and 1 are the characters "U" and "S" (probably my region code). The others ... ? In some postings on videohelp, changing byte 3 (47) to FE lets the drive work with VCDs and SVCDs better. On my DN191H, it made the DVD hard to eject (?). Again, from videohelp, changing byte 6 (F4) to FE "removed Macrovision". Neither of these changes allowed me to play a commercial DVD at 1080i over component connection. Any other ideas? flipside 06-30-06, 10:21 AM Well you've gone further than me so im little use k, though i have asked a guy whos quite up on these things on the doom9 if he has any pointers. wintersfs 06-30-06, 10:51 PM Over on doom9 you mention having a multiregion code - which one worked for you on this player? flipside 07-01-06, 04:24 AM Sorry when you said you'd tried a number of codes i assumed you'd allready tried these , I found them on the Videohelp forum listed under the UK model name for this player , so far ive seen it as DN191h - North American Model DNX190h - European Model DNX190MH - UK Model with Card Reader DNX190UH - UK Model with USB Multiregion info: with no disc in the drive on the remote press 000 then an on screen menu should appear giving you the option to set the region. i also tried the codes for teh Lg LDA-511 listed on the Videohelp forums but this one was teh only one that worked Factory reset + SYSTEM INFORMATION page go to Setup/video/TV Aspect/16:9 and press 1,3,9,7,1,3,9,ENTER These did nothing HDCP off/on: PAUSE,1,2,3,6,9 on screen: "OK H" or "Default H" (Status) (2xPAUSE to leave) Macrovision off/on: Pause,7,4,1,5,3,6,9 on screen: "OK M" oder "Default M" (Status) (2xPAUSE to leave) Video/HDMI Info Page: Pause,2,4,8,6,5 Use this to check and see if HDCP protection and Macrovision are on wintersfs 07-01-06, 10:45 AM Thats interesting; I did try all of those and I was unable to get _any_ of those codes to work on my 191... flipside 07-01-06, 11:27 AM iirc i had to have the tray out wintersfs 07-02-06, 11:35 AM I tried again, and the system reset code worked. I am currently testing stuff in the LG dvx172 which I think has a vaddis 882 (no hdmi or usb support like the 888) to be substituted by the 190. Quite impressed so far. And the multiregion hack works! -thanks flipside and videohelp ;)- Question is about the famous usb port... yet we still don't know if it is really usb 2.0 or just a poor 1.1 as I am starting to think (manual says it's 1.1..) As we know by the dvdboard.de forum the Tevion 8000 in germany which has the same vaddis 888 and usb has been hacked so it can recognize external hdds via usb, and not only flash drives. I haven't seen the images because i'm not registered there and i'm not that good in german anyway, but I sure think there must be a way to do the same with the LG... Can anybody help on this matter?? I mainly plan on buying this player because the zoran 888 quality and the possibility of watching divx/xvid/etc. from an external connected hdd. Thanks, ZX After further evaluation/setup with DVE, my friend has decided to return the 191h. In addition to being unable to pass BTB, we are seeing banding, macroblocking, and poor motion adaptive processing. The zone plate tests were particularly bad, with significant noise in the concentric circles and the boxes with diagonal lines. Since he doesn't care adout Divx or USB, we feel there are far better players performance wise for the same money. flipside 07-08-06, 04:32 AM @ maikito Ive checked with LG uk and they have confirmed its USB2 , the manual is meant to says its backwards comaptible with 1.1 but its badly worded, re the tevion if you use bugmenot.com there is a un/pw on there you can use to access dvdboard the hack is a full hardware hack involving soldering a PC usb plate onto the MB and wiring in power from teh back as the usb connections on these players dont pass teh full 5amp power over them . This voids warrentys etc no firmware changes are made so in theory anything it does can be done on any vaddis 888 box . I managed to test a few drives on my 191uh before i had to get a warrenty return on it (it broke - Ahem) and i flash playback of even high rate divx was as good as from dvd however i couldnt get any of my HDD drives to be read, they were recognised but had disc read errors . And as since they seem to have been out of stock everywhere in the UK im a little suspicous about them right now so much so that im looking at teh elta 8847mp4 same chipset no opticle out but has both usb and card reader though currently on available in Germany . Every time I power down the player and repower it back on, the player resets back to 480p via HDMI. Is there anyway to "save" the 720p via HDMI without having to toggle through the resolution button everytime I turn the player back on? Kind of annoying. If it won't, does anybody know of a upconverting player out there that will always output 720p or 1080i once you've chosen that resolution? Any help would be great. When I first plugged it in into my Polariod 32" 720p LCD FLM-3232 (via HDMI), I noticed I had to manually stop the DVD and change the resolution myself. It looks fine at 720p, so I kept it at that. Since the speakers on my monitor are horrible, I used my coax out to my reciever but noticed I had to change the settings from the setup menu in order to allow the 5.1. I don't know if it was a little too separated in some places, or if it was just the movies I was watching (probably the latter). So far the audio's good except I want to say I notice a slight delay, and we're talking milleseconds here. Nothing too bad, however it you begin to concentrate on it you might start to obsess about it. Now the video can be near perfect in some places, except for one thing which has been really bugging me. The blues are bleeding pretty badly, almost to the point where its like watching an old VHS tape. My particular monitor is known for being iffy on the colors, but I never had a problem with this before on any other players. I tried watching Terminator 2, the "Extreme" DVD edition and it became really hard, given how many blue tones are in that movie. I threw in the Superbit edition of Gattaca which was almost perfect with the exeption of the shots of blue at the beginning and end. Someone in here was asking about the zoom feature and it only gives limited options. 200%, 400% and 900%. Those are your only zooming options. To be quite honest, I'm thinking of returning this if I can't find a way to fix bleeding problem. I'm figuring that with HD DVD and Blu Ray up and coming, I'll just wait until I get one of those players. And for as much as a videophile as I thought I was, my regular old progressive scan Panasonic DVD-S29 seems to do just fine with my current DVD library. fjcamacho 07-28-06, 12:45 AM Sorry guys, but actually how can I change LG DN191H region code ? Right now im looking for a decent tv for the bedroom, it was a tough choice between the LG 30FS4D and the samsung 30" slimfit comprable model- but im going with the LG. The downside to LG was the 1 HDMI, which will be used for HD SAT so that leaves me with a DVD player void. Aparently the LG DN191H can upscale through component. However it is aparently being pulled, so it wont be available for long. My question is, out of the box will it? I searched and saw a thread about it- but it said "hacked LG DN191H can upscale through component." I saw one at bestbuy so I thought about picking it up. I just wanted to make sure it would upscale without HDMI. I have the Sony 60" SXRD XBR as my main tv with the Sony DVP-NS75H hooked up via Monster 1000 series HDMI and the picture is great. Thanks :) tvnoob 07-29-06, 12:20 PM sorry I didnt see this thread and my post was moved here. :o So bottom line seems this WILL NOT upscale through component? flipside 07-29-06, 05:23 PM @ tvnoob "However it is aparently being pulled, so it wont be available for long." where did you hear this ? tvnoob 07-30-06, 12:12 AM @ tvnoob "However it is aparently being pulled, so it wont be available for long." where did you hear this ? It was in another thread about this player, someone on this board said it. Something to the effect of "hard to find them new now, so buy it while you can" I work at bestbuy- While my store doesnt carry it, I checked other stores in the area and they have an abundance of 10-15 units, and our warehouse had about ~190 So im not sure whats up with it. I liked the whole upconvert through component- but it apparently cant do it. It seems to be a good player, so I may go for it afterall. flipside 07-30-06, 05:49 AM Ahh yes i read that thread , im a little unsure where that poster got there info as afaik this is a brand new device , hell its only been out about 2 months in the UK and unless theres some major issues with it (and i dont think they count the lack of component up convert as one ;) ) i cant see them pulling it . I think what is needed is a wider user base attempting to hack it a bit. I find it odd that the US device wont take the same multiregion codes as the UK one but thats two people who have said it . Im going to keep having a go at mine but its a bit piecemeal as i have a 3 month old child who takes up most of my time and hes much more fun :) Lim 07-31-06, 10:41 AM I am located in Malaysia and this model LG DNX190H is available here. Cyber Chulo 08-13-06, 07:00 AM Hi guys. Hopefully someone can give me an answer. I just purchased the lg DN191H from Best Buy. I had upgraded from the LG LDA-418 model. The only problem that I have with this is that when I play letter box divx movies, it stretches it vertically instead of giving me the black bars. The only way that I can the black bars back is if I change the setup mode to 4x3 instead of 16x9 and set it to letterbox. The only problem is that it squeezes the video down too much. They all look "fat" now. I did not have this problem with the old lg model. Now I'm thinking of bringing this back. LG tech support was pretty useless as they hardly understood what I was talking about and gave me the same answer of running it in 4x3 mode. I've got the player hooked up to a panansonic plamsa with both HDMI and component cables to see if it made a difference. Thanks. sordof 08-13-06, 07:42 AM I returned mine to BB. Would not play back DVD+RW (only DVD-RW) and had some hesitations on divx. I believe that the component did scale up except for commercial DVD's. I'm getting the OPPO 970 instead. anomie 08-13-06, 10:49 AM I envy the British. They have a choice between a version the same as the DN191H here with a card reader or one with a USB reader (DNX-190UH). We only get the card reader. Even worse is they're the same price. I can't get myself to buy the DN191H for $120 when I know another version exists with a feature I'll definitely use (USB) for the same price. I've searched eBay and Google for sellers in the US with no luck. Argh. anomie 08-13-06, 01:04 PM Does anyone with either player mind testing QPEL encoded files, DivX and especially XviD? How well does it read DVD-RWs? Burned discs in general? - Doesnt seem to handle dvd+r's but +RW's are fine . Though this +r may down to the max file limitation, it cna only handle 1012 files on 1 disc but as thats the only +r i have i can t really test any further Lim 08-21-06, 03:52 AM Any luck with upconverting over component yet? These were burned copies from my retail editions, using One Click and Any DVD. The image upconverted to 1080i via components. The blacks were deep and the colors were rich and acurate. The sound was very good useing 96khz. I am now watching the Lord of the Rings Extended Version and everything looks good. I purchased at the local BB. Terminator840 10-04-06, 12:25 AM One question, does the 191 do vertical stretch to get rid of the black bars like the 418 and the Zenith 318 does? colinwo 10-10-06, 04:48 PM Okay I am one of the unfortunate people who own the LG DN191H DVD player. I got this from a Best Buy 3 weeks ago while on holiday in the US. I live in Europe for the record. Now when I got here, it worked fine with HDMI. I bought a brand new HDMI to DVI cable from MonsterCable. After 1 play, the DVD has gone bananas. First the picture was skipping, even when there's no DVD inside. The background picture when you switch it on skipped. Now whenever I insert a DVD as soon as it starts playing, I get a blue screen and that's it. It works fine via Component, but not with HDMI anymore. I changed the cable just in case, but no luck. Same problem. So basically, the setup and the background image is displayed while with HDMI, just when the movie starts playing it goes blank. I called LG Support, the rep who talked to me was a total b!tch. She told me pay $99 for repair, shipping and part. I said that's BS since I bought this for $99. And she said you have no warranty since you're out of country. I have to read the warranty to make sure that is the case but still, I ain't paying one cent. Then she went on and on and on and I said you know what, forget it and hung up on her. Any similar problems? Thanks. Flyinace2000 10-22-06, 03:52 PM So i bought the display model from my store (i work at RadioShack). Like a fool i belived the "label" on the component outputs. Basicly the dvd sports component out, hdmi out, divx playing etc... I tried to use 720p out from the component port bue apparently my LG rz26lz50 LCD only support progressive scan trough the DVI port, so I'm buying a HDMI-DVI cable to test this. But my question to you is, yesterday I tested a DVD and I noticed that the player had some ocasional stops. It happened like 6 or 7 times trougout the moie, it was almost as if it was buffering data or something, the image would pause and you could hear the drive spinning up. Doeas anyone else have this problem? I rejected the possibility of a dirty DVD since the DVD was bought yesterday. UPDATE: I just added the HDMI-DVI cable to the mix ... basicly I have no picture in the TV unless I'm using a ripped DVD. I'm assuming this is an HDCP incompatibility of sorts. Is there any way around this? It seems rather silly to me that a copy protection systems stops me from viewing my genuine DVD's... Thankd gceuca 11-10-06, 10:32 AM Hello everyone, I got a DN-191H a couple of weeks ago and I am relatively happy with it. I like the image quality when using the upconversion ports and it plays the .avi/divx files nicely, without stops or gaps. However, there are some things that are cutting down on my satisfaction with this player and being relatively new with it, I have a couple of questions for the hardcore users. First, is there any way you can keep the aspect ratio of a divx/.avi file? I have some files with 2.35:1 or so image compression and they would look stretched :( on a 16:9 (which is roughly 1.78:1) screen. If someone knows of any setting that would keep the original aspect ratio, I would be grateful. Also, my TV only has a DVI input port and therefore I need to use a HDMI/DVI cable and get the sound on the audio cables. However, even though the TV specs are stating that the DVI digital input works together with the audio analog inputs, I can't seem to make it work. I'm wondering if this could be because of the player itself, I was thinking that outputting the digital signal through HDMI might not allow the analog audio outputs to be enabled in the same time  . This is right now quite a dragdown, because even though the component cables allow the upconversion, I can only play the commercial DVD's at 480 res through component, which is not that much of a quality gain. Anyone tried HDMI/DVI successfully? Thank you in advance for the help. Evilmonkee 11-12-06, 09:01 PM Just picked up this dvd player today from BB. I had a JVC XV-NP10S that was several years old that started to crap out on me. Overall it was a nice player but more and more the movies I rented from Netflix would skip and freeze up on me. Also it was getting flaky on playing xvid files and often movies that I made copies of would lose audio sync about 3/4 of the way through. Aside from those recent problems, I never did like the way the JVC player handled FF/RW. It wasn't smooth even in 2x speed and I would always end up overshooting where I wanted to get too. So far I am loving the LG. The FF/RW capability is exactly how I like it. I have put in all the discs that I was having problems with and they all played perfectly. No skipping. No loss of audio sync. Other than that, this dvd player is definitely more than I need. I don't have an HDTV so I can't benefit from the higher resolutions and upscaling. But at least now I have the capability if I ever decide to upgrade my TV. Right now I'm just using component and optical audio. Picture still looks great on my 32" AFAIC. ajwillys 11-15-06, 04:59 PM Just noticed this DVD player is going to be on sale day after Thanksgiving at Best Buy for $70 after rebate (via Black Friday ads websites). Since I'm looking at getting a new upconvert, this caught my eye. Do people think this will be a worthy purchase for the price or something else better in same price range? FYI, I have a Sony SXRD KDS-50A2000 and I'm really just looking at a stop-gap DVD player til Bluray vs. HDDVD gets sorted out. EDIT: Best Buy has demanded that all their ads be removed from all the sites so you can no longer verify for yourself. Guess it's a good thing I downloaded it :) beatlesfan 11-21-06, 11:57 AM Can someone please clarify for me? Can copy protected DVDs upconvert to 720p or 1080i when using an HDMI cable? fdm813 11-21-06, 12:38 PM Yes, That's it. I know the player will play dvd-r and dvd+r of the single layer variety. I also know that it will play store bought dual layer discs, but will the player play dual layer dvd-r or +r variety? I haven't burnt any dual layer discs but plan to in the future. I have a seven year old Pioneer player but purchased a new one for the Pioneer being old didn't always like to play home made discs. I've seen in some specs of new players that specifically say they play dual layer discs, but this LG player doesnt' say so. Does this mean it won't play them or they just didn't bother to include them in the list of playable discs? Thanks Ron dph1077 11-28-06, 12:25 PM I just bought this last week @ Best Buy. A few days later I got my first HDTV, a 32". Over the weekend I hooked up the two via HDMI. The picture is amazing! But my problem is that while it plays nice and smooth my original movies, it wants to pause every few minutes if I play a backup dvd. Does this mean the player is bad? I only ask because these worked fine on my old cheapo Apex $25 player and expected the new unit to play anything under the sun? I don't want to exchange it for another just to have it happen again... :( greybeard guy 12-05-06, 08:12 PM I bought the LG DN191H unit at Best Buy, and it has very good picture and sound on my rear projection crt hdtv. Protected commercial DVD movies play smoothly and look great over the hdmi cable. Component output is switchable between 480p, 720p, and 1080i for your unprotected backups. (I hope you let the kids play with your backups while your valuable originals are kept safely locked up!) In short, protected content can only be sent in hd to the hdmi port. Unprotected DVD can play over the hdmi or component ports. I have seen no evidence of the pausing others have noted. I have played xvid and divx avi movies, mp3, wma, vcd, and svcd. The only thing that has not played was a custom vcd with movie encoded at very non-standard data rates and with very long filenames. I will experiment this weekend to see if it is the long filenames causing the problem. Briefly, anything that had a reasonable chance of playing, HAS played..... Seems like a pretty good buy to me...... ;) dph1077 12-05-06, 08:24 PM I exchanged the faulty unit at Best Buy the other day and couldn't be happier. This one does play all my originals and backups (yup, keep the originals boxed up in the basement away from the kids in waterproof plastic bins :D) with exceptional quality. Glad I stuck w/ the model and tried it again. I am a computer geek, but am new to all this terminology for A/V equipment. I do know that my player is hooked up to the tv via HDMI for its outstanding picture. Now I just need a quality (and cheap priced) audio system to complete my home theater experience to replace my old $100 theater in a box. icecore 12-06-06, 05:47 PM Anybody having luck using a hdmi-dvi adapter? Thinking about buying this dvd player for a westinghouse 19" lcdtv. musictaps 12-11-06, 05:28 AM Ok, so I thought I would try a hack to get up-converting over component out-put. Well I didn't do it but I found a very strange phenomenon. When you turn on the player and open the dvd tray, then push 1, pause, 1 pause, the red circle with a stripe through it appears in the upper right hand of the screen. Then if you repeat the process with the number 2: 2, pause, twenty-one times, the red circle shows up again. then if you do it with the number 3 ten times it shows up again. For each number there is a different amount of times required to get the red circle to show up. Strange. Unfortunately when I restart the machine the same pattern doesn't get the same results. The amount of repetition needed to get the red circle changes. I also tried another approach. I started with: 1, pause, then I did 2, pause, then I did 3, pause and so on through the numbers again and again. each time through different numbers got the red circle to appear. So, why do certain numbers make the red circle appear? Are they part of the code? Why don't the numbers yield consistent results? I know I sound like a nut, but get out your remote and try it and tell me it doesn't make you wonder what's going on. I am hoping someone with a mathematical mind will do it and find a pattern. Good luck, and maybe together we can figure this out. zrdb 12-11-06, 11:34 AM When my LGDVB418 started giving me problems I looked at one of these and remembered having gotten one 9 months ago and opening it up seeing a Zoran Vaddis 888 chipset in it I took it back-didn't like the video compared to the 418. Guess what I got to replace the 418? Another refurbished one off of ebay-I couldn't be happier. About a month ago I purchasd the LG DN191H because of the price and the ability to play Divx. However, I seem to be having some problems with it and hope you can help. I have burned two CD-Rs of Divx files. The LG recognizes one of them no problem and plays it without any stutters or audio loss. The other CD hangs up and freezes or sometimes won't play at all. I burned both of them using NERO. The other problem is that my LG has issues recognizing DVD+R and DVD-R. I have some old DVDrs from about a year ago that play fine, however I just burned about four more and the LG only recognizes one of them flawlessly. I keep trying but to no avail. They either stutter or hang up. I tried playing them on my friend's Zenith and they all work fine. So I'm not sure what the problem is. Are you all using a specific brand of DVD-Rs? Chas Hart 01-14-07, 02:01 PM I'm really upset that this player seems to stretch all the xvid/divx files instead of using the black bars. If anyone knows how to get it to use black bars, please let me know! Set the output res to 480p. rctoyguy 01-15-07, 12:38 AM OK - I now know (from reading here) that the DN191H will only upconvert via HDMI... Does upconverting really make that big of a difference? I will be connecting to a Mitsubishi HD1000U projector, which maxes out at 720. I'm trying to get a grasp of all of this - normal DVDs are at 480, right? my projector is limited to 720, so if I try to send it 1080, I'm still only going to get 720, right? - Is there a noticeable improvement in a 480 DVD playing at 480 vs a 480 DVD playing at 720? The difference for me will be an HDMI cable that is about 25' long, and with my budget, I would hope to see a marked improvement if I buy this cable (since that would be the ONLY reason for the cable purchase). I'm not far enough along with the theater build to actually test for myself, but the electronics have already been bought... SVonhof 01-15-07, 09:14 AM Jeff, from what I have seen on my Sony HS51a using this DVD player, the upconversion done at the DVD level is better than what is done at the projector level. FYI, if you have a digital projector, no matter what brand it is, it upconverts the signal to the native resolution of the projector. The other reason for allowing the DVD player to do it is that it does it while the signal is still digital and then passes it to the projector in digital format as well, which should be less prone to interferance from the cables. AVS Forum sponsor MonoPrice has good deals on HDMI cables, I got a 50' HDMI cable from them:MonoPrice HDMI cables (http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240&style=) jeremyb 01-16-07, 01:33 PM I have the DN191H connected to my 32" Samsung HDTV, and the picture is much improved over standard DVD, with one exception. I found that dark portions of the display show serious artifacting. If I am watching a dark movie like "The Matrix" the effect is so apparent it ruins the experience of watching this. It is connected using a Philips 6' DVI-HDMI cable to the TV. It does this regardless of the resolution setting. In the owner's manual, it states if you experience problems such as this your TV may not be compatible? What gives? Anyone else have this issue? I have planned to take the unit to a friends house and connect it to his TV with the same cable to rule out the unit and/or cable being bad. I have a Toshiba 32" CRT HDTV, and over the HDMI/DV Link I see pure black patches in all the dark areas. I believe this may be because the HDMI colorspace has a higher range (16 vs 12 bit?) of values and the conversion from HDMI to DVI is "clipping" the darkest values to black. If the player allowed selection of the colorspace or normalizing to 12 bit, this could be avoided, but with this player HDMI to DVI conversion will likely always display that effect with at least some DVDs. I also was not able to get the player to change resolution modes, it just displayed the slashed circle (international 'no' sign) when I pressed the resolution button on the player, when using hdmi to dvi. My TV only supports 1080i, so I'll have to try the lg191 against my 720p lcd at home. Also, my unit pauses for no reason on some rental cds that look fine visually. SVonhof 01-16-07, 01:48 PM Jeremy, when you were trying to change resolutions, did you have a DVD playing? If so, try stopping it and hit the resolution button again. SVonhof 01-16-07, 01:49 PM Oh, also, welcome to the forum! DALLASLEO 01-24-07, 08:11 PM Ok I read this whole thread but I am still lost. I have a JVC HD-61G787. Its 720p. So my question is, will this DVD player upconvert the DVDs to 720p? Do I need to connect with HDMI for it to work? And would the DVDs have to be HD-DVD or can they be regular DVDs? I want to thank you in advance for your replies. fdm813 01-24-07, 08:21 PM If you connect via HDMI you will be able to upconvert to 720P. The player only plays standard DVDs not HD-DVD. So my question is, will this DVD player upconvert the DVDs to 720p? O.K., I am lost. Are you asking about the JVC or the LG? This is an LG thread, are they the same under different brands? There are a few upconverting DVD players that will upconvert the image to 720p or 1080i over component, but most need to be hacked to do it. I have not found anyone who knows how to get the LG to pass the signal through component if the DVD has HDCP on it. If you use an HDMI cable, it will upconvert just fine. This is different than HD-DVD or BluRay in that the native resolution of the standard DVD's is only 480p and the player is upconverting the image to the higher resolution with software/processing. ove1 01-25-07, 10:49 AM I have an LG DN191H that was having intermittent sound dropouts every once in a while when the PCM sampling rate was set to 96 kHz. Apparently this was caused by noise in an overpriced, but poorly shielded, Sony HDMI cable. I returned that cable to BB and replaced it with a much less expensive cable from Monoprice.com with ferrite cores at both ends, and no longer have the problem. FWIW. oye 01-25-07, 12:00 PM Will this player pass DTS to a receiver that has a decoder over coaxial digital or optical? I see some reviews it will and others saying it wont. Whats the deal? I agree, it seems to be all around a pretty good DVD player, especially for how much it costs, but I find it a little strange that you have to change it from 480p to the resolution you want every time you put in a different disc, but I guess I can't have it all for 70 bucks! rctoyguy 01-31-07, 08:19 AM Mine is heading back to Best Buy today. I've had it almost a month - it's been sitting in it's box almost the entire time, I bought it to use in a home theater that is under construction. This past week we got far enough along that I could unbox the components (through sanding sheetrock, all cleaned up now) and have been trying to use it to play music CDs to listen too while the construction continues. I have tried a couple of different disks, and they all skip terribly - on top of that, I have had to push the "open" button several times to get it to actually open the tray. It has worked on the first push a time or two, but mostly it ignores the open button. This is my first experience with anything LG besides an older cell phone, and to be honest, I'm not impressed at this point. I am going to just swap it for another one to see if it behaves the same way. I really need this model to work since my equipment rack was built to be component specific - if not this model, another model with almost identical height is the only thing I can go with... $70?!? - I gave $99 for this one - now I'm even more bummed! grimholtz 01-31-07, 09:55 AM Why anyone would use this thing to play CDs is beyond me. rctoyguy 01-31-07, 10:29 AM Using it to play CDs is a temporary thing - to have something to listen too while working on the room. But the way it handles CDs indicates to me that it might have problems with DVDs as well - it very well could be a problem with just my unit, at least I hope so... But - am I mistaken in thinking it is supposed to be able to play music CDs? grimholtz 01-31-07, 10:45 AM But - am I mistaken in thinking it is supposed to be able to play music CDs?Maybe someone else can chime in here. I've never used it for playing CDs. Can it? I'm sure it's supposed to...just check the manual. However, it seems to me that using this device to play CDs is a lot like using the butt end of a screwdriver to drive a nail: it can be done, but it's definitely not the best tool for the job. It's my impression that people (including myself) buy this device primarily for its DivX/XVid playback and its support of an external USB device. There is only one other player on the market (currently) that does both AFAIK. rctoyguy 01-31-07, 10:49 AM Of course it's supposed to be able to play CDs - ANY DVD player should be able to play CDs. I don't know how much I will use it for that (apparently very little since it has problems with it) - I also don't care about divx or xvid - all I wanted was a single disk DVD player with HDMI that would handle upscaling - a sales guy at BB pointed to this as the best deal. The memory card slots on the front were cool enough to push me into buying it - I wonder if they work? fdm813 01-31-07, 11:09 AM Mine plays everything it's supposed to. No problems. I guess yours slipped through the inspection. ppshooky 02-01-07, 06:09 PM Has anyone experienced playback issues with certain movies? I've watched several movies on my LG DN191H and had not experienced any problems...until I put in Fearless. What ends up happening, is that the movie will skip at certain parts of the movie, similar to the single brief pause when the laser is switching between layers on the DVD. Except, this will happen multiple times through out the movie, and it always happens in the same spot. I watched a few other movies without incident, until I watched Munich. Same thing, it was skipping in the same place through out the movie, and always in the same spot. It started to get worse towards the end of the movie. My brother-in-law and my parents watched both movies on their DVD players (one had a different LG dvd player), no issues. Has anyone else experienced this? The only thing I can think of is that, I think, these movies did not start with the default resolution that I had set (1080i). I thought that maybe it was the movie, so I took Fearless back and exchanged for a new one. Tested it, and it happened again. Tested it on other machines and it did not happen again. Some help would be greatly appreciated. SVonhof 02-02-07, 01:01 AM I have noticed some brief skipping like you are saying, but never even checked to see if it was the same place all the time. I also don't have it doing any upconverting as I am on component right now (and didn't know you had to tell it 720p or 1080i every time you put a new disc in) so I was thinking maybe it was the way I had it hooked up. Hmm, think Best Buy will take it back after buying it the day before Thanksgiving? I have the original box and receipt! joro2k 02-02-07, 10:13 AM For a month or so I use LG DNX-190H (The european model of the player). I also have the DivX skipping problem. Quite irritating. I can make the following conclusions: 1. The failures appear more often if the CD-R is burned on higher speed (>10x) 2. DivXs burned on DVD-R are not skipping! (I burn them on 4X speed - may be that's why) The player is not so bad despite all. ;) ppshooky 02-02-07, 11:02 AM I have noticed some brief skipping like you are saying, but never even checked to see if it was the same place all the time. If yes, anybody have experience on the picture quality ? Regarding the user manual : Playable Subtitle format SubRip(*.srt/*.txt) SAMI(*.smi) SubStation Alpha(*.ssa/*.txt) MicroDVD(*.sub/*.txt) SubViewer 1.0(*.sub) SubViewer 2.0(*.sub/*.txt) TMPlayer(*.txt) The subtitles file must have exactly the same filename as the video file (they differ only by the file extension). That's how the player finds the right sub file to use for the movie. blackwatch 02-16-07, 10:47 PM First, glad I found this forum, as it helped me decide on a dvd player. This question may seem little, but it's the only issue I have with this unit, so far. When a scene has multiple angle options, the player pops-up the little video camera in the corner. That kinda annoys me. Is there a way to toggle/disable that pop-up icon? Is there something I'm missing? I went through the manual and this entire thread, and didn't see anything about it. Thanks. rtyall 02-18-07, 02:31 PM Hi, Regarding the issue with having borders/letterbox on Divx movies, it should only be unable to do it if you have the player set to 16:9 aspect ratio. It won't allow letterbox resizing in 16:9, only in 4:3. The only way to get around it is too set the aspect ratio on the player to 4:3, then use the zoom function on the widescreen TV to make it look correct. Oddly enough, there doesn't seem to be much difference in picture quality when I do this in comparison to my old yamada 6600 player. Aristotle16 02-18-07, 06:28 PM Just to point out that I have the Zenith DVB612, brother to the LG DN191 and its series. Basically it's the same machine without a USB port, as some one already pointed out in the post. Funny thing is that all the same remote control hacks/commands from the DN191 work. Also, the remote control hacks that don't work are also the same, ie the region hack that works for the European DN series (see videohelp). One surprising thing to me, however, is that the Prom code for the Zenith is different than the LG DN191. Using the same command listed before, I get the following screen: Model: ZV100402231 Chip ID: VADDIS_888 Servo. Ver.: 20.46 MICOM Ver.: v1.87 Checksum: B482 Prom: 55 53 00 45 02 55 E4 FF Why should this prom be different being that they are the same machine? Could it be just the lack of the USB port? And lets try to keep working on the region hack please!!!! Mawingo 02-18-07, 10:21 PM I bought my DN191H on 1/30, and have not been able to successfully watch a complete movie since hooking it up (via HDMI to a Sony SXRD TV). Will this be a good player? TV is Sony 55A20. I like to keep it simple :D Paul Also is there any alternative (Samsung?) I should look at through BB. Only reason BB is mentioned is because I have gift card and and upconverting player is really all I can think of that I can use from there. m_selvanayakam 03-02-07, 11:42 PM Any one experiencing 'no audio' with LG DN191H? I am new to AVS forum ... please bear with me ... I hooked up the LG DVD Player via HDMI to my Sony KDS 55A2000. Though I get the video, the audio does not appear to be supported (a message is displayed for a few seconds on every DVD that is played). I have tried a few DVDs, in vain. I had picked the said DVD player at BB for $90 (before a $40 gift card for the Open Box unit, with the box and no missing parts). Any suggestions? Thank you SVonhof 03-03-07, 01:48 AM I have had no problems with the audio except when it cuts out in small sections, like it did in War of the Worlds. I wanted to test my new subwoofer recently and popped that DVD in and put it on the pod sequence, when they come out of the ground and it was like it was skipping and trying to find the location on the disc again, except the video never stopped or skipped or anything. This sucks. I know it was under $100, but how can they sell these if they can't even figure out the audio? I didn't have it set to anything like DTS, it was just normal Dolby Digital. Anyone else notice this problem on this section of War of the Worlds? bingham71 03-07-07, 05:03 PM Any one experiencing 'no audio' with LG DN191H? I am new to AVS forum ... please bear with me ... Thank you I ran into the same sort of thing with my Sony KDF 42E2000 set. I have the player run to the TV via HDMI cable, and got the "audio not supported" message on screen. I had to change the setting in the audio menu from bitstream to PCM, (or it might be the other way around, but I'm not at home, so I can't be sure :) ). But that worked for me... SVonhof 03-08-07, 09:30 AM So, anyone know if there is anything I can do to get rid of the audio skipping issue? I really don't want to send it back to LG and I have had it longer than 90 days already, so I don't know if I could even do that. What is the factory warrantee? ove1 03-08-07, 11:36 AM So, anyone know if there is anything I can do to get rid of the audio skipping issue? I really don't want to send it back to LG and I have had it longer than 90 days already, so I don't know if I could even do that. What is the factory warrantee? I had intermittent second or two audio drop-outs when 96KHz PCM decoding was selected. It didn't do it when 48KHz decoding was selected. I returned a horribly overpriced Sony HDMI cable to the B&M where I purchased it and replaced it with an inexpensive HDMI cable from Monoprice.com. The Monoprice cable had ferrite cores on both ends. I haven't had any further problems with audio drop-outs after replacing the cable, so I suspect it was a noise or distortion issue with the binary pulse train over the Sony cable. SVonhof 03-09-07, 09:07 AM If I remember correctly, I switched to 48 from 96 already (I will have to verify this to make sure) and the audio is being delivered via either fiber or digital coax (can't remember which) since my signal doesn't go through my AV receiver. ppshooky 03-12-07, 12:23 PM Has anyone experienced playback issues with certain movies? With increasing problems with my LG, I was able to get the deck replaced by LG, according to their work order. I've hadn't had any of the issues I had previously, however I'm still having problems with Jet Li's Fearless. Is there anyone who has this movie that is experiencing the same problems? The pause isn't as long as it was before (from half a second to a quarter of a second) but it is still happening. It's not like the pause that you normally would see when you the layer is changed. It's happening in several specific scenes of the DVD. I've had family members test it on their DVD players and they've told me that they have not had any problems when watching my copy of the movie. 2 scenes that I can recall clearly this happening, was the in the beginning of the scene where Jet Li is fighting the wrestler. The camera is panning downward as they are showing the crowd in this circus-style tent. The other was the morning after Jet Li killed Chin. As the camera is panning down over the restaurant sign, it happens again. I'm glad I had a gift card when I bought this DVD player. I don't think I'll be buying any LG products any time soon if this is an inherit flaw in all of the DN191H DVD players. I have been thinking the same thing, except I didn't have any gift cards or anything. This player is supposed to play DVD's. Simple, right? Maybe not. ppshooky 03-12-07, 04:20 PM I have been thinking the same thing, except I didn't have any gift cards or anything. This player is supposed to play DVD's. Simple, right? Maybe not. Yeah, no kidding. I think I'll use this DVD player as a back up one when I procure another TV. I have a few other DVD players I have (aren't HDMI and won't upconvert though) and I'll give them a go on Fearless tonight to see if the problem is still there. |
