View Full Version : Bollywood on Blu-Ray??
Daman S 04-10-08, 04:08 PM There is a blu-ray survey on Yash Raj Films site. It appears that they are trying to assess the interest on blu-ray. This can be considered as a good sign.
http://www.yashrajfilms.com/bluraysurvey/bluray.aspx
I filled it out as well, some good ones there from Yash Raj
Silsila, DDLJ, Hum Tum,B&B, Chandni,Chack De etc.
Hope to see some of these on Blu ray at least, and hopefully they would be mastered well.
I filled out the survey too....
mhafner 04-10-08, 06:25 PM Some stupid choices in this survey and they are too nosy (My address? No way.). Won't fill this out.
Thanks! Chandani, Silsila, DTPH, KKHH, rest fill in!

You don't have to give them real address....
Nosferax 04-11-08, 10:18 AM Someone in this thread was supposed to post a short list of Indian films without song and dance number in them that are available. I would be interested in watching a few of those.
I know that for some, the song and dance number are an integral part of the film culture of India but I just can stand them, Sorry about that, but it's the way I feel.
But I would like to get some historical drama or other type of films that don't have those number in them but I can't find a list anywhere.
I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.

Thanks. I see your point here but I feel you would miss out on some really great movies this way. Can't you just push skip of chapter when a song starts?

Now with all a lot hell of 50GB available on bluray, it is high time bollywood dvd should resort to seamless branching, giving you option to watch film with songs or without. It should not be big deal, but who cares. Most of time, songs are just imposed on narration, heavily bogging it down.

Great point....user should get a option to watch movie with or without songs.

+1 to that idea
stlcity 04-11-08, 01:52 PM So are there any movies from BOllywood released on BR yet?

I would prefer not to :)
Also, contrary to asian or other foreing film industry I find that Bollywood is doing a poor job of advertising or publicising their product. I can find, in an heartbeat, what HK or japanese movies are schedule to be release and what they are about, but the only info i can find on bollywood movies are "national enquirer" type sites that tells me nothing about the movie and too much about the actors.

You are not going to loose any thing any ways! It will make some others happy if they decide not to watch songs, stopping narratives unnecessarily in quite a few cases. I would assume it will help only, not hurt! But thats is problem that we INDIANS are not used to appreciate constructive suggestions but would rather love to stick to our hypocritical ways at any cost! unfortunate though!
I remember AAmir khan insisted oscar judges, view 4.5 hr film lol. If that film, would have been 2 hours, minus a few songs or if judges could view it without songs, it would have improved its prospects. All, these festival screening of Devdas, OSO, etc, people do like, dance costumes, but not film its entire soul/body. It is ironical, in first place that Bollywood copies, films like BLACK from Hollywood and then submit them for oscar.
I think, it is time to grow up. Some times, I decide not to watch Hindi film, because it is 3 plus hours, and I do not feel good leaving it in the middle. But that is my problem, I guess!
I thought that was a very CONSTRUCTIVE SUGGESTION!
pappy97 04-11-08, 07:18 PM So are there any movies from BOllywood released on BR yet?
Go back and read this thread, it's not long. It has current and future BR status for Bollywood.
Well, I have some of the newer bollywood sd-dvd's that I have purchased and rented, and I would say they compare very well in quality to standard hollywood sd-dvd's
Which bollywood discs are you specifically referrning to ? And, how small is your TV ? I have a 37-inch LCD and all bollywood films look like cr~p ! Its not surprising ... squeezing 3 hours into a DVD calls for something called compression ... which MPEG2 cannot handle gracefully. Thats especially evident during song / dance sequences where the index frame of the MPEG2 stream is so far out from the current frame that there is no hope of retaining any detail.

I just placed my order for bluray copy from amazon. 20 bucks including shipping and tax for a hindi bluray movie...can't beat that.

Let us know about the quality. I know nothing about this film or most newer bollywood films ... except that every one we watched looks like cra~p on my system. They are so awful on our 37-inch LCD ... I dare not put that on my 92-inch 1080p projector setup.
My suspicion is that putting lipstick on a pig does not make it any more attractive. Do you know how the original film was shot ?
Having said all that ... I would pay a lot of money if someone could meticulously restore the original Umrao Jaan to Blu-ray !!! I wonder about the clarity on the original film itself ... perhaps the optics they used were not very good.

No problem! I've held on to my initial order when the original date for OSO's blu-ray release was to be Jan 22nd!

The film was 224 minutes not 270. And cutting out the songs would have been asinine.

This is very good idea. Branching does not take that much disk space and feasible even for DVDs. I am not sure why they don't use such features.

I get so many indian movies the quality is as good as any hollywood movie, order from india weekly.com or nehaflix they have originals. Eros.com other option. You guys can make silly comments like "putting lipstick of a pig" rest assured the top 10 billionaries in the world 5 are from India. Mittal, Ambani, Mukesh and Anil. Tata group just bought Land rover and Jaguar for $2.5 billion . The indian gnp is surpassing the USA in 15 years. I as an American give india all the credit for emerging as a giant soon with China. Bollywood is bigger than hollywood. Lagho Re Munnabhai is being copyed by hollywood and being made in to a hollywood film, it goes both ways. India should get respect this coming from an American Indian
Watch orginial movies by utv, and eros etc, i watch on my 65 inch home theatre they are stunning. I don't know what you guys are watching, are you going to indian stores and watching $2 copies on dvd burners, that is why. Watch the originals they are amazing. Eros is a huge entertainment house, they are involved in satellite tv, broadband distribution etc, they don't put out crap.

well said....I see people bitch more rather then being happy that bollywood movies are coming out on bluray. People have more concern about piracy then watching orginal bluray movie. I will support all the up coming releases of bollywood bluray movies and enjoy them and let others do the hating.

Agree. Some Bollywood movies are in better quality than some Hollywood movies. However, other way around is true as well. There is room for improvement. Hope Bollywood blu-rays would truly reflect the quality of the original movies and will be used as a vehicle to take Bollywood to a new era.
calikarim 04-18-08, 04:31 AM This one is going to be a stunner. It has everything King Khan, Shahrukh Khan in lead, newcomer georgeous Depika Padokone ( spelling), and Farrah Khan director. Some of the most catch songs, Darde Disco, and all this in vivid color and hi def. This is going to really sell, one of the highest grossing movies in bollywood all time. Blue ray and bollywood wow, this is my favorite year in hi dif. Bollywood movies are definately geared for hi def, with the bright saris and colorful hip clothes worn my the male stars. Hritik , Aish, Kareena in hi def and my favorite Priyanka Chopra.
This is out May 6th, i put my order on amazon. Now just waiting for Jodhaa Akbar from UTV

If so it's repeating the cinema release clash. And that one was won by OSO.
sdurani 04-18-08, 04:40 PM If so it's repeating the cinema release clash.Very perceptive. I'd forgotten that both films were released theatrically the same weekend. And here we go again with the Blu-ray release. (I wonder if this was deliberate.)

Yes. I am thinking of the same. Whether it is deliberate or a coincidence. Could there be some connection between Eros and Sony and both movies were worked on simultaneously... just speculation.

I hope very much that it would be a stunner. As you have said it has all needed ingredients to be a stunning HD movie. Hope they got all technicalities right for it to be a stunner.

Every time someone makes such comments ... I have to roll my eyes. I have a 92-inch projector HD setup ... and I can't tell you how many DVDs of these bollywood flicks I have rented from Netflix with the hope that they would be stunners. While faces mostly look good in close ups ... the compression of the MPEG2 stream causes finer details in a scene to be lost. This is all when the characters are not moving. When the characters start moving ... like in a dance sequence ... all bets are OFF ... it looks absolutely awful ! Anyone who wonders why, should read up on MPEG2 instead of simply trolling up a response.
I would love to have a colorful dance performance as a DEMO on my large screen when the desi crowd shows up. But NONE of them have met my expectations.
Consequently .. I have no great expectations from this Blu-ray release. I will wait till one of you (hopefully someone who is a stickler for video quality) gives the release two thumbs up.
BTW ... we had rented 'The Jane Austen Book Club' on Blu-ray ... and they had a preview for Sawariya (spelling?) ... the video definitely did not appear to be of Blu-ray quality.
On an unrelated note ... the Sawariya preview was nothing more than a dumb song segment ... no story or plot was mentioned. Really, how dumb!
And, please, don't bash Hollywood ... not that I like them either (I am more a fan of independent films). Bollywood needs to credit Hollywood in a big way ... most bollywood dress code will make Britney blush.
Now ... totally off-topic ... watch "Aab Tak Chappan" ... great movie in my book. Not video wise ... but a movie that gives credit to the audience for having a brain.
syncguy 04-20-08, 01:47 AM Yes, there is room for improvement. Hope Bollywood will take the best out of the blu-ray technology.

I watched this one last night and will have review posted tomorrow. While I did not find the film to be all that stellar as a story, it is an incredible video and audio presentation. It is without any doubt one of the best looking and sounding HD experience I have ever had. I was shocked by the technical quality of this release. Reference in every way for both video and audio.

FYI, Bollywood "trailers" are pretty much like this, unless the movie has an action element in which the trailer will have some scenes with people holding guns or something.
I agree it's dumb, but these "trailers" are designed to appeal to Indians (I'm Indo-American in full disclosure), and I guess indians eat that up. I know for some people a movie better have good song and dance or they won't go, hence these "trailers."

Thank you for that response Ralph. Ill have to look up your review on the spot then. I know that as a movie Saawariya is a bad choice, but it's great to hear that they got the technical aspects right. I have pre ordered Om Shanti Om from amazon and hopefully it would match Saawariya in technical aspects and is a far better movie as well.

Many thanks! BLURAY authored by INDIAN dvd manufacturer will be always on the bottom of chain, in unacceptable quality, for simple reason of cost cutting, using less than desirable sources, processing, authoring and still pricing it on top of heap:eek:

Perhaps you did not read the authors post correctly ... you should, since he has pointed to root of the problem. As someone rightly said earlier (yours truly, :)) ... putting lipstick on a pig does not make it any more attractive.
Having said that, the hope is that production values will rise to the (BR) occasion. All that BR will help avoid (with its 50GB real-estate) is the studio blaming stream compression as the cause.

Blu-ray: all players should fully support all advanced audio codecs.
All Players should have the ability to upgrade firmware to support current and any future audio / video codecs. Thanks to high-speed DSPs this is becoming less of a challenge. Case in Point - PS3.

Hope blu-ray will change this trend.:)
unfortunately, trend continued with heyy babyy bluray! I wish people here who have reviewed saawarya can get a screener or some one who own heyy babby can send them their copy for review! so we can see differences, betwwen, acceptable, and un acceptable transfers! any one volunteer?>
Making bluray from cinema print with old fashion bare bone DD 5.1 only is a slap on face of bluray technology from right and left, imho! esp when it cost $25 and up! if $5? I wont whine perhaps!!!lol

calikarim 05-02-08, 01:05 AM I was shocked i went to blueray.com and checked out the review for Sawaariya, they claim it is the FINEST blue ray disc to date, simply breathtaking and amazing detail unrivaled in any disc. They say is beats I Robot , the finiest prior to Sawaaritya.
This is to all the people that posted earlier that Bollywood prints are horrible and poor quality. This bollywood movie has the finest transfer ever in blue ray. Check out the review.
I watch Bollywood movies all the time, originals from nehaflix and india weekely, that are from eros and utv, and they look as good as the Hollywood counterparts some even better.
Watch originals, don't watch $2 rented burned copies from desi stores, this is avs, order originals they are stunning.
I was shocked i went to blueray.com and checked out the review for Sawaariya, they claim it is the FINEST blue ray disc to date, simply breathtaking and amazing detail unrivaled in any disc. They say is beats I Robot , the finiest prior to Sawaaritya.
This is to all the people that posted earlier that Bollywood prints are horrible and poor quality. This bollywood movie has the finest transfer ever in blue ray. Check out the review.

Dude! Do you know, who had rights to that film? Sony! CT did that BR! CT did 2 standard dvds before Lagaan and MK, both were good! So your point does not imply to saawariya! If all bollywood films had rights with FOX, CT, UNIVERSAL, Disney and are authored by them, they will be great looking dvds of mostly crap films lol! No doubt here!
calikarim 05-02-08, 01:10 AM Saawariya dances onto Blu-ray and boldly proclaims itself as one of the finest video presentations available on the format. Presented in 1080p high definition and framed at 2.40:1, the image is positively breathtaking; from the first frames you'll be mesmerized at the sheer brilliance of the transfer, from the wide array of colors to the natural flesh tones to the incredible black levels -- it all adds up to a transfer rivaled only by I, Robot, in my opinion, in terms of level of perfection. So, what makes this image so good? Everything. The movie is almost always bathed in a blue glow, but that doesn't stop colors from being rich and lush, or blacks from being inky and pure. Said blacks hold steadfast and retain a masterful level of brilliance seen only in a handful of discs (see I, Robot or I Am Legend), and this one might even beat those. Colors are fantastically rich and stunningly beautiful, bright, vivd, and dynamic without being too hot or blown out of proportion, like those seen in High School Musical 2. Here, colors are absolutely natural and pristine, vibrant without appearing phony. Detail is breathtaking, perhaps the finest yet. Take simple things like a stone paved bridge. A close-up shot reveals every single line, crack, chip, and texture to be seen on it, and it makes you believe you could touch it; the image so pristine and thoroughly detailed that you instantly know how each stone would feel to the touch. Detail on humans is incredible as well; the viewer can easily make out the individual grains of facial hair on Raj's face. Really, there is no point in going on; the longer I rave about the disc, the longer it'll take you to go see it. Nothing but your own eyes and a properly calibrated display can adequately convey how rich and lifelike this transfer is. Simply put, this disc is as good or better than any other Blu-ray I've seen, bar none. If you are looking for a strictly reference quality disc, this one is it (so far). ..... excerpt blueray.com review of this movie...

Yes, my recommendation is not to watch pirated 2in1s. I refuse to watch these. Some Bollywood DVDs are very good quality (e.g. Parineeta) and are comparable to Hollywood DVDs.

It's not so simple. Films have also limitations in the original photography which can not be undone on HD. That goes for Bollywood and any other -wood. It's just more rare on Hollywood films than Bollywood. Sawaariya is very new and done by top Bollywood talent so the master is good. There are many Bollywood films that will never look nearly as good no matter who has the rights and how much talent and money is invested in the transfer.

For now I'd be content with any confirmation that it is indeed being released in the Blu-Ray format on May-6, unlike the announcements by others and denial by Eros in January.
There is no official word from Eros's US entity about this, nothing on their website, retailers too are clueless. Sorry to be such a skeptic, but it's the after effect of the let down in January. Of course, I am hoping that it does happen.

Hum Dil De Chukhe Sanaam (Aishwarya Rai in in , excellent story , songs)

These movies are better, you will love bollywood, it is the biggest movie industry in the world.

and poweful stories.
Ok ... I will bite.
Granted, I am interested in a high quality bollywood production on Blu-ray .. simply for the visuals. But, most of these films with stunning visuals has a storyline that is downright silly ... and to a certain extent "an insult to ones intelligence".
I saw Aab Tak Chappan on regular DVD ... fabulous film ... one of the best ... but with no stunning visuals. It did not need it, because the story could hold its own.
Most Bollywood is crap ... I just want a BR for demo purposes when people visit us.
Talking about which ... does anyone know of an anamorphic version of the movie Dil Se ? I would like to capture the song thats sung on the train. Perhaps make a mpeg4 version of it and put in on my PS3 hard drive. Also, how is the DVD quality of "Bunty aur Babli" ... especially the Kajra Re song ... is there any compression artifacts on that song ? I would like to capture that song and put on my PS3 drive as well. The name of the studio (eros etc.) release that you recommend would be helpful too.
Thanks !
I saw Aab Tak Chappan on regular DVD ... fabulous film ... one of the best
amen!
syncguy 05-04-08, 11:17 AM Last week I had the opportunity to watch Heyy Babyy blu-ray on a large CIH (constant image height) scope screen.
Heyy Babyy is an excellent blu-ray transfer. It is not the best in comparison to Hollywood transfers but it is better than some Hollywood blu-rays that I have seen. For example, it is better than Entrapment and Air Force One but not good as Pirates. I should whole heartedly thank Eros for this excellent work for the first time in the history of Bollywood movie transfers.
The overall PQ is excellent but surprisingly it changes from place to place in the movie. I am not sure whether I am seeing the differences of the cameras and film stock that they have used to make this movie. The best PQ is in the wedding scene filmed in India. Then the song Mast Kalander follows. An interesting aspect that I could notice was the parts of the movie filmed in Sydney were not good as the other parts filmed in India. The quality of starting song was good but the song filmed on the streets of Sydney was not good as the other songs.
The AQ is noticeably better than the DVD and could say that it is a good DD5.1 mix (but the first song has too much base).
The subtitles of this movie are in the right place, that is at the bottom of the picture (not on the black bars) so it gave an outstanding visual treat on a large CIH scope screen. Hope OSO and Saawariya would place the subtitles correctly so that those would be watchable on a CIH scope screen.
Also, hope that the PQ and AQ of OSO and Saawariya would be better than Heyy babyy. :)

Oookaaay ... I watched Saawariya last night. I had a couple of friends over (non-desi). They have seen Bollywood DVDs and are familiar with the brain-dead themes. But this screening was more to OOH and AAH the incredible colors and costumes that, until Blu-Ray came along, was not attainable. Video Quality was what we were looking for . We were not looking to spot an Oscar nominee.
The first thing that struck me was the background audio track on the Menu Screen. It sounded very clean with lots of LFE.
The first scene with Rani Mukherjee attempted to give us a sample of the video quality. Very good quality overall ... much better than DVD. The details are striking. I would rate it a 8/10 on the Blu-Ray video scale but only when the scenes are static. For some baffling reason, in spite of being on Blu-Ray, the video tends to lose resolution very quickly when there is motion. This is an issue that we were not expecting to encounter on this very spacious medium.
A few scenes look really good - a very brief demo scene is around 29 minutes into the movie. This is one of the very few scenes where the facial details are very clear. However, for the most part, the video throughout the movie is not crisp. Even at closeups the facial texture is very soft. One reviewer compared the video quality to "I, Robot" ... I have to respectfully disagree.
A scene that demonstrates the video issues I mentioned, can be found around 42 minutes into the movie. Motion tends to cause loss in resolution.
This not an action / thriller movie, so the 5.1 TrueHD audio, while impressive, is not spectacular by any definition.
As for the movie itself - we watched the first five minutes and found the whole premise very lame ... fast forwarded and skipped through the various scenes and stopped watching after 20 minutes. The reviewers have claimed that they sat through this entire movie. Hard to believe :)

Couldn't agree more, I too found this to be a wonderful movie. Sorta hindi opera. The music, and settings, are enchanting. A bold move by SLB. You need to be in the right mood (a glass of wine helps). I am anxiously awaiting my blu-ray from amazon - due tomorrow.

No word on OSO yet ?
The last official word from Eros Entertainment (US division), as stated on Blu-Ray.com in January, was that they have no plans to bring this on Blu-Ray. It is virtually impossible to either contact Eros in the US (all listed methods return a *dud* response) or extract any useful information from them (channeled through their reps and retailers).
We went through the exact same cycle of anticipation and lack of information in January. How did the May-6 release date get communicated to several on-line retailers, followed by....nothing?
Wierd!
Alternatively, Sony has done a smash-up job with Saawariya on Blu-Ray. Kudos!
Daman S 05-15-08, 11:13 AM I'm watching Saawariya as i post this. What can i say, im spellbound by the beauty of the movie! One has to watch it like a theater opera and not like a typical bollywood movie. As a photographer i can't help but admire the beautiful and rich lighting, framing and sets of the movie.
The details blu ray brings out is just unbelievable. I would definitely agree with Ralph Pott's review that this is comparable to the best of hollywood offerings out there. Reference quality & highly recommended, If not for the storyline, just for the beauty of the whole movie as such!!

Greetings Ralph! I rented the movie based on your review and have to say i wasn't disappointed. Thanks for reviewing the movie, much appreciated!!
I just finished watching the whole movie(in 2 sittings) and though it was a tad long and dragged in between, i liked it overall, especially at the end. I don't have a decoder for high-def formats so couldn't listen to the TrueHD mix, but the picture is pristine in 1080P.
Ranbir Kapoor has really acted well and seems to have great future ahead. Rani Mukherjee and Zohra Sehgal were stellar in their performances. I feel if they could have cut the movie to around 2/3rd its length it would really have helped the pacing. Nevertheless i liked it a lot!

Ralph, if you do decide to venture more into bollywood movies there are a few good suggestions in this thread that you can check out. Some good quality dvd transfers(and good movies) i'd recommend are Lakshya, Lagaan, Rang de basanti and Black(this one by the same director as saawariya). Hope to see more of you on this thread.
I hope Columbia/Sony pictures make more bollywood movies so that we can get those transfer's on blu-ray.

wait till u get lagaan, asoka, mission kashmir on bluray.;) but SD are not bad on those either! Lakshya, not film, nor dvd is good to my taste!
Blockbuster online has this BD and I put it in my queue yesterday - it was available and got shipped today. Hopefully we will get to watch it this weekend. My wife and I are originally from India but neither of us understand Hindi. So, we will have to rely on the subtitles. We have a 1080p projector (brand new), so this should be a treat.

NP! Asoka, could have been better film, if not got too **** commercialism oriented. Imho, one of best ever shot film.
Now here is my take on Asian BR:
Guys!!u need to see what a HD GOOD **** can be  go buy BR of CURSE OF GOLDEN FLOWER by CT, it beats all CRAPWARIYA, and YODHA KA AKBAR hands down! I was blinded by detail, sheer beauty, never saw such a beautifully shot film, plethora of colors never seen before.
If CRAPWARIYA is rated 95/100, this deserves 150/100 :D
Previously I thought THE HERO was one of most beautifully shot( no BR?) I cant wait for CROUCHING TIGER!

This is very interesting. If this Amazon statement is correct, there are some lucky people out there watching OSO on blu-ray. How interesting ....
syncguy 05-25-08, 05:17 AM Does anyone know for sure if Jodha akbar is coming to blu-ray on 27thmay,2008??
Where did you get this info. I didn't even know that they are working on Jodha Akbar blu-ray. Good news.:)
mikenike 05-27-08, 06:52 PM NP!
The PQ of Curse of the Golden Flower is nowhere as good as Saawariya. Both are very colorful, but Saawariya's colors are very ambient while CotGF's are localized, a bit more natural. Which one is better is up to opinion, but Saawariya has better image quality control than does CotGF, that is undeniable.
Funny how both were disliked by critics of their respective (and international) countries.

COTGF is a better film to watch, and imho, PCM sounds better than TRUE HD, Saawariya's video is too dark for my taste!, nevertheless very good!
TorontoR 05-27-08, 11:21 PM update from my local indian movie store guy lol
Says Om Shanti Om blu-rays are in but at the wholesaler's location, they will be delivered to him by the end of the week. Hopefully this turns out to be true but I highly doubt it since there are no announcements anywhere period! can anyone on avs corroborate this?

Happy to wait until 16th. If they give us the blu-ray on the 16th, that would be great.:)
I have seen somewhere in the web that BD50GB duplication plants are all booked for 2008.
Any industry insiders know of this?

No, I think it was just a formatted response from Amazon.
Daman S 05-29-08, 11:03 AM FYI, Saawariya's trailer is downloadable from Playstation store for those of you who have a PS3. The trailer though doesn't seem to equate to the actual blu-ray i saw in video quality. They seem to have gone overboard in contrast in the the trailer making it too dark as a result.
The actual blu ray was perfect in this aspect and didn't look dark at all to me on all the 3 monitors i played it on(2 plasma's and a projector).

June 16th release on regular DVD or BR? also could u provide the link to the source of info. Thanks
Daman S 05-30-08, 01:31 PM Maybe we should set up a schedule for releases then ?
There aren't much movies coming out on blu ray to set up a schedule. Everything seems to be a rumor right now. Only OSO was expected to be released after Saawariya and that too seems ambiguous now. I do hope Jodha-Akbar is released as well. Outside of these 2 movies I don't know of any other rumoured releases.
Btw, has anyone checked out the trailer for Love Story-2050, looks real slick.Weta workshop seems to have done the SFX so it should be pretty amazing in that department. If the movie turns out to be as promising as the trailer it would be a first for bollywood. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBj1q-g6cts

U, Me Aur Hum and Jodhaa Akbar blu-ray are available for preorder from http://bollywooddvds.com/.
This is really encouraging. Bollywood so far hasn't betrayed us on blu-ray picture quality.:)
Heyy Babyy is on 50GB disk and the PQ is very good but not the best. You could find reviews and comments on Bollywood blu-rays in this thread.
Not sure when OSO would be released. Any news?
Wow, you are one pessimistic dude! I don't think i've ever seen a positive post from you in this thread yet :p
i always said Saawariya is very good BR, not worth buying as film sucks! EROS dvds and BRs are not good et all. I would love to buy again Lagaan and MK, if and when sony releases it.
Most of Bolly wood films released are bad, exceptions do exist.
I will prefer Elizbeth , Curse of Golden Flower, Passage to India over JA though, and Moulin Rouge over Saawariya any days!
If that is pessimistic! Sorry!I am realistic!
BTW there are two other great films if made to BR, I'll get those, i.e Zubaida and Maqbool but I do not have high hopes re that happening.
Dooms are not worth collecting imho.
U Me HOO HUM was simply dull affair.
I wont buy INDY 4 on BR, if it ever makes to, I am happy with TRILOGY!
I never bought 5th Harry Potter even I am fan of series, three were good, 4th, I stretched it.

is it bd50 how is the copy compared to saawariya
Saawariya PQ is excellent and very close to the best I have which is Pirates 1. I think the difference in Saawariya and Pirates 1 is in the film stock, lighting etc used in the original movie rather than the blu-ray transfer. Saawariya transfer is, I think outstanding. IMO, Heyy Babyy transfer quality could have been improved (by manipulating DNR and edge enhancement).
Both are on 50GB disk. Saawariya is AVC while Heyy Babyy is VC1 encoding. Hence Saawariya has the encoding advantage.

You are entitled to your view, and though these movies might be great, i could give you big list of movies that are crappy from every film indstry and similarly great ones as well. Just coming here and genralising that everything about bollywood is what you only seem to do(at least to me).
There's no point in making this useful thread into an argument so ill leave it at this.

If to my taste Saawariya is a bit too dark, would it make it BAD for you?

However, it could be too good to beleive that these three movies will be released on blu-ray in the near future (Jodhaa Akbar, U Me Aur Hum and Taare Zameen Par). Hope that would be the case.

I cancelled my order with Amazon about 2 weeks back (had the order in there since January). Yeah, I have that website in my favorites and have had it for awhile. I ordered a dvd from there awhile back. I posted a question in their forum that never got answered, but we now obviously know the answer to:
Bollywood: HD-DVD or Blu-Ray? (http://forums.bollywooddvds.com/forumpost.asp?TID=156&PN=2) posted Feb 3rd, 2006:
Over here in the US, there has been talks of the next generation DVD, which are going to be in high definition. These are "supposed" to come out sometime in 2006, probably mid-late 2006.
Has there been any talks of Bollywood movies being released in either format?
There have been some great bollywood movies I would love to get in HD.
I will stay my usual self, skeptical, till I get my copy in my hand!

I have received my copy of Om Shanti Om blu-ray from http://bollywoodblu-ray.com. They shipped it on last Friday and I received it on this Thursday. It came in 6 days, which is the fastest shipping that I have experienced so far for a disk (from UK to Australia). The padded packaging was good and it arrived in excellent condition with the original shrink rap intact. Unlike Amazon, it was registered as well, therefore, I had to pick it from the local post office as no one was at home this morning. Very good service. Thanks bollywoodblu-ray.com.
Now I should thank Eros for making such a fantastic blu-ray disk. Honestly, I had my doubts about Bollywood blu-ray picture quality before I saw the first Bollywood blu-rays. However, when I saw the first Bollywood blu-ray Heyy Babyy, all my doubts vanished. Now Eros has released the second blu-ray OSM and the overall PQ of this disk is better than the first disk Heyy Babyy.
The PQ of OSO is much better than many Hollywood blu-rays that I have seen. However, I could see a variability of the PQ throughout the movie. The PQ of some scenes was excellent and other parts vary from good to very good. Overall it come close to Saawariya in some scenes but cannot say it is equivalent to Saawariya. Sony Pictures Saawariya is an outstanding blu-ray disk (apart from the unreadable subtitles on Scope displays) with excellent picture and audio quality and has reference level picture quality right throughout the movie.
I also wish to note that the subtitles of all Eros blu-ray movise are correctly positioned at the bottom of the picture rather than on the black bars, hence, it is friendly to Zoomers and Scope displays. Otherwise the subtitles cannot be read on Scope displays rendering the blu-ray disk almost useless in its original form. It is a fantastic effort by Eros. Thank you. Please keep up with the blu-ray releases, we want to see all Eros classics on blu-ray as soon as possible.
The blu-ray technology is an excellent match for Bollywood movies. The colourful costumes, the detailed decorations and spectacular sets look absolutely breathtaking on blu-ray. Once people fully understand the blu-ray advantage (and purchase blu-ray players to supplement their HDTV sets) I am sure the sales will rise.

Lagaan is not a musical per se like Saawariya, but a great film with lot of similar song and dance sequences. It it beautifully photographed and has rich earthy tones throughout the movie. Plus the movie itself is far better than Saawariya as such IMHO.

DD5.1 track is okay but I don't think it is better in comparison to the DVD. I haven't done a critical comparison on this. TrueHd track may be better but I couldn't check this as my avr is aging and it has no HDMI inputs.

Lagaan is arguably the best Bollywood movie ever - especially for someone who has not seen many Bollywood movies.
PS The Bollywood equivalent to "Titanic" - in terms of Box Office appeal - is the 70's film "Sholay" starring the world's most popular actor Amitabh Bachachan.

Sholay would me my choice despite age! lagaan of course but a bit too lengthy for western viewers but feel good, great film, excellent music!

dalidvd 06-16-08, 04:34 PM I thought Sawwarayia was the lamest silliest Hindi movie I have seen in a long
time. Contrived story, ridiculous dialogue and a shameful waste of a BD.
If you want to see really good Indian films, start with some of the great classics by Satyajit Ray (his Apur Triology would be a good start). Not likely we'll see these on BD anytime soon, for sure.
Sholay is also far far better than the silly Sawwarayia. Shot entirely in 70mm, it has gorgeous location shooting (I've visited the sets in Mysore in the 70s), and a credible story. Amjad Ali Khan played the role of his lifetime as the dacoit king.
Lagaan is also far better than Sawwarayia. However, if Anglo-Indian movies are your cup of tea, you should rather see Passage to India. Very few directors had the sense of scene location shooting as David Lean did.

I humbly agree with you to the T.
Saawariya is a DISGRACE to be labeled as good film. I am baffled what the hell SLB showed to SONY OFFICIALS to fly all the way to INDIA and buy rights of this CRAPPWARIYA!lol:confused:
Passage to India and Sholay are timeless classics imho. Sholay even being an old film is still better than most recent bollywood films even on technical merits and production values! Sholay imho, is as good as any Good Hollywood Western film you can come up with, e.g Tombstone etc.
Lagaan might become ageless classic too over the period of time but nevertheless millions miles ahead of Saawariya, that was imho, bottom of the worst chain, and I have seen a lot of bad stuff from bollywood.
Imho, a film can not be labeled good because colors, sets and production values are good or SFX are good either. It is more than that!
It is unfortunate BOLLYWOOD never ever released SHOLAY as a DECENT DVD REMASTERED as it deserved, a CRITERION COLLECTION status!
Saawariya does have its own legion of fans - perhaps those that enjoy operas and musicals - myself included! Production and presentation, too, can either enhance or ruin the impact. Some folks who found Saawariya unenthusiastic, drab, and otherwise unwatchable were joyfully immersed in it when I played it for them on my big screen fed by a Blu-Ray with 7.1 TrueHD audio (the bass and LFE is very well done). Eventually, it's a matter of personal taste - however eclectic that may be.
Dunno why Passage to India is being referenced here as a bollywood movie. While the storyline may be India based, along with a significant portion of the casting, this was an EMI Films production directed by David Lean. Gorgeous movie.
Regarding Sholay - the reason it resembles a good hollywood western is because large parts of it are 'plagiarized' from one! Sergio Leone's 1968 western "Once Upon a Time in the West" aka "C'era una volta il West", starring Henry Fonda (copied as Gabbar Singh), Charles Bronson (Jai - replete with the harmonica) amongst others. However, there is no denying the immense entertainment quotient and resultant popularity of Sholay along with its contribution to desi colloquialism.
So, to each their own and I dare say that I may not have derived my Operatic musical bliss from Saawariya were it not for Sony's outstanding BR presentation. Wonder how many other gems are waiting to be discovered for this reason alone.
Cheers and enjoy.

Was MOULINE ROUGE musical or not?
I loved it! Give me a BR, I'll kiss your hands!
Sound of Music, Wizard of OZ, what were they? I adore them! I will give you one hand each for BR!:D
Hindi! All, are musical mostly, DDLJ, DTPH, 1942 A Love story, all mush, romantic musicals! I will go for those!
Name more musicals please? I'll give you my picks, both HOLLY ? BOLLY?
I said previously 99% Bollywood films these days are either direct lifted, inspired or Hindi remakes of Western Film. They do not dare or spend to make original, creative stuff any more!
Hindi! All, are musical mostly, DDLJ, DTPH, 1942 A Love story, all mush, romantic musicals!
True, most Bollywood productions are musicals in that they have musical scores, songs, and the now ubiquitous 'item numbers'. However, there is a slight difference between a movie peppered with random songs and item numbers versus one where the music forms a part of the narrative or is blended in to accentuate the setting and story line - such as an opera. My description of Saawariya was always a sort of hindi opera. Merely my opinion, and I am certainly no expert in the nuances of cinematic presentation - just a passionate viewer hungry for that bit of technical excellence in the audio and video presentation.
I too would thoroughly enjoy any of the 3 movies you mention in a well done BR 1080p with 7.1 TrueHD, heck DTS-MA would be better!
Happy viewings.
I watched Saawariya last night and absolutely loved the set designs, colors and music. This was the first Bollywood film I've ever seen in its entirety. Are there any others I should seek out that have the same surreal style?
I think that a whole collection of AVS members have had a collective brain seizure (including myself).
What you are looking for is:
DEVDAS
which is the most famous film by the same director as Saawariya.
"Beautiful sets, colors and music" also describe Devdas.
Probably the most spectacular and beautifully filmed dance numbers ever.
From all accounts, a much better story than Saawariya as well.
When Devdas was released in 2002, it was a massive hit and sensation.
It stars Aishwarya Rai , often known as the "most beautfiul woman in the world".

I'll take Devdas over saawariya any day! My Bonus is Madhuri Dixit here!
R_J, man! Did u ever watch Moulin Rouge though? Just wondering!

Sholay was shot on 35mm. There were 70mm prints.

Yes, I did watch Moulin Rouge and enjoyed it too. As another poster noted, maybe that explains enjoying Saawariya. Devdas is a visual treat - opulent costumes, sets, and the beauty duo. Good music, songs, and dances too. Another fine SLB product. No need to 'choose' this over Saawariya as they both have their individual quantum of entertainment quotient. Now where is the BR of Devdas with a well done audio track - what a treat that would be! The SD original DVD did have aspect ratio issues and colors lacked luster in many segments.
DarkKnight2k4 06-19-08, 12:34 PM Agreed. Kulbhushan Kharbanda as Dr. Evil. It doesn't get any better.

Yeah baby !!!!
Devdas needs to be transferred for sure.
mrtwstr 06-19-08, 02:39 PM I have to agree that as beautiful as Saawariya was, I hated it as a movie. My wife was even bored to tears. It jumped all over the place, and I spent half the movie wondering if the girl was just plain nuts. I am not sure if my Bollywood tastes are too westernized, I prefer things like Monsoon Wedding or Bride and Predjudice.

even bride and prejudice being junk was more palatable imho too, but I prefer bend it like beckham over it.

ya ya ya! I do not consider myself CHADHA, NAIR, DEEPA MEHTA FILMS as BOLLYWOOD too! especially when they are not as bad as most bollywood films are lol:D and BILB was better film imho, than all trashy over the board B&P
Starlord 06-20-08, 03:04 PM See, I don't think of Bend it Like Beckham as Bollywood... not the least of which because they actually kiss in it ;)
You haven't watched many Hindi films in the past two or three years, then, because kissing is nowhere near the taboo it used to be, and *quite* a few films have had kissing scenes, including ones involving very famous mainstream Bollywood stars like Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta, to name a couple. ;)
But I agree that BiLB is not a Bollywood film, since it wasn't made within that system and featured an all-UK cast.
mrtwstr 06-20-08, 03:09 PM I admit it, I don't watch a ton of them. I generally enjoy them when I do, so I'm looking forward to trying OSO (even though the plot summary sounds weird as hell). I thought the taboo was still strongly in place... didn't Aswaryia get in trouble because of that peck on the cheek in public with Richard Gere?
Anyway, thanks for cluing me in :)

No problem. :) It wasn't Ash but Shilpa Shetty who got into some controversy over Gere's little kiss. And yeah, it was really stupid. I said that kissing is less of a taboo, and a lot of the younger directors who grew up in a more open-minded environment have helped to make it more acceptable to general audiences in the past few years. But it IS still *a* taboo, especially to certain segments of the populace. ;) You have to keep in mind that a lot of the more "traditional"-minded, overly-conservative people in India (of which there are quite a few, of course) tend to become very vocal in instances like the Gere/Shetty incident. But just as with our languages, cuisine, cultures and beliefs, Indians are a diverse group with varying attitudes towards things of that nature.
Things have changed a bit in recent times -- for the better, I feel -- but there are still lots of people who have deeply-ingrained notions about public displays of affection, on the street or on the silver screen. ;)

Talking of Aishwarya she has a very long kiss with Hrithik Roshan in Dhoom2. Lot of new movies involve kissing scenes these days, so its not as taboo as it used to be.

The thing is, in many parts of India, it's still taboo. In fact the kiss you speak of did provoke protests, but in India, that's not a hard thing to do. :D

Yes I agree with you. People seem to take it offense to such things in India even though its none of their business. Most of the cases of protest are for just getting attention or political reasons.
If Raj Kapoor had been alive, the industry might not have been so uptight. He always was a step ahead in this regards in his movies.
mhafner 06-24-08, 06:17 AM Had a look at "Om Shanti Om" BD. It's watchable but far from top quality 1080p HD. Sharpness and detail end at around 720p. There is DNR smearing and a filtered look.
Sawariya is in another league concerning image quality.
Still, far better than any Eros DVDs so get this one if you like the film.

mhafner 06-29-08, 06:54 PM Finally watched Saawariya. This will be the reference for quite some time. Almost perfect DI quality. Eye candy deluxe. Looks fantastic! No complaints at all about image quality due to HD mastering. There is minor DNR smearing on some Rani Mukherjee closeups, but that's part of the DI, not a disc mastering problem.
No song menu, which is silly. And the supplements are nothing to write home about. But the main thing they got nailed with this disc: Presenting the movie in breathtaking quality. Eros, Yash Raj and all the other usual suspects: THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE!! WATCH AND BE AWED!
mhafner, welcome to the Saawariya BR fanclub! I can also attest to the sonic wonders of its audio track. The TrueHD has been fully leveraged to produce awesome dynamic range, channel separation (also a testament to the mixer) and the beautiful bass aka LFE presence.
By contrast, the OSO BR audio is of average quality. I could discern no meaningful difference between the DD and TrueHD tracks. LFE is consistently misplaced. No surreal enveloping audio experience at all :(
