Same here, still waiting on that.. I'm tempted to cancel my order and order from elsewhere, what's holding me is the good pre order price i got(15 bucks) from amazon.

I hear you... i may do the same in a week or so i guess. I have the dvd of OSO so i'm not in a real hurry to get it though. I'm also thinking of getting Saawariya if i can find it for 15 bucks or so online just for its presentation and songs.

Nice HT setup btw, what speakers have you got there?

TorontoR

Thanks, the speakers are Monitor Audios bronze series. Most are not too familiar with them but they are British made speakers made by a company started by a desi in the 70's I believe!

Sweet! I looked up their website, they seem to have got rave reviews from Sound and Vision, very nice ! There doesn't seem to be a dealer near me though, i would have loved to give them a listen.

How reliable is Nehaflix? I've never ordered from them before and their website doesn't exactly scream "professional" (though to be honest, a lot of Indian DVD sites are like that), nor do I see any of the usual seals for BBBOnline or VeriSign that are common to reputable e-tailers. Now that it's actually in-stock at various places, I want to order OSO from a reliable, fast site.

It's not excellent for 1080p HD. It's ok. There is no 1080p detail and sharpness in this transfer anywhere. It ends at ~720p. It looks filtered and soft, grain is mostly gone.
But it's quite watchable and far better than any Eros DVDs.

maybe for a DD track on a regular SD DVD, but definitely nothing to rave about for a Blu-Ray disk with TrueHD. The LFE is rarely tight or over-whelming (when it should be). For comparison, enjoy the Saawariya BR songs on a system that can properly decode the TrueHD track.

As I stated in an earlier post, the OSO BR disk exhibits no perceptible difference between the DD and TrueHD tracks. Maybe someone with more accurate ears can analyze this further.

I will agree with mhafner and others that this is definitely better than most DVDs that Eros releases. Shame though, considering what a visual and aural treat bollywood material would be in hi-def. A long overdue marriage!

Yes, OSO is not the best HD but I should say it is a quantum leap from traditional Bollywood transfers. I have seen far worse Hollywood transfers and also seen much better transfers from Hollywood. Should wholeheartedly thank Eros for this attempt. And hope for the best in future transfers.:)

Omkara was one of my favorite films of 2006, and I thought Taare Zameen Par was an excellent film, as well. I hope we see Rang De Basanti sometime soon, too. I salivate at the thought of RDB on Blu-Ray.

How do we get Netflix to get Blu ray versions of movies that are NOT from a major distributor?

For example, they have Sawariya (sp?), but that's because it's Sony. but Heyy Babyy (don't know the distributor) and Om Shanti Om (Eros?)??

They only have the SD-DVD's.

So how do we get Netflix to get these blu ray discs? Thanks!!

Pester them with e-mails and phone calls, I guess. If they realize there's enough demand for films from the subcontinent on Blu-Ray, they might begin carrying more of them. The market for these movies can hardly be considered a "niche" anymore, and us fans represent a truly *global* community (and yes I'm aware Netflix only rents out movies in the U.S., but I'm speaking in terms of the broad cultural reach of modern Indian cinema). They could please a lot of customers by offering Indian films in the best format possible, and might even sell a few Blu-Ray players to people who don't own one yet but love watching these films.

By "remastered" DVD, do you mean one with the extended cut of the film, or the theatrical version? I've seen virtually all the different prints out there, including those from European vendors and "amateur" re-encodes (both the theatrical and extended cuts as the case may be) and they all vary in quality. The extended director's cut *master* is considered to be the one with better PQ since it's been cleaned-up a bit from the theatrical cut. There's a lot of discussion/debate on this topic over on Zulm.net, with many members there feeling the video quality of the Carlotta (a French editor) PAL DVD to be the best out of the ones currently available, but inferior in the sense that it's sourced from the theatrical version. The only director's cut DVD available now is the one from Eros/B4U, which is widely considered to be the worst encode of the bunch.

You can see how this gets very complicated very fast. lol :D

The Carlotta DVD also has mediocre sound. It definitely doesn't contain the Dolby Surround mix that was redone for the DEI version and isn't even in stereo IIRC.

*However,* I recently read on another forum (I think it was DVD Talk) that Carlotta will be releasing their first few Blu-Ray discs in October, one of which will be Sholay. But just a few days later, I read on yet another forum that Carlotta replaced Sholay with another film, so now I don't know when or if they'll be releasing it.

Sheesh. You'd think it would be easier to find a top-notch copy of one of the greatest films in Indian cinema history. :o

Good stuff buddy. Most hollywood movies I only watch once, maybe pull it out again after a couple of years but with bollywood movies, with the songs and all, OSO gets played pretty often at home since my 3 year old has the songs memorized. And they all seem to love SRK! My inlaws were over yesterday and made the comment it looked better being played on blu-ray in my theater vs the actual theater that they watched it at (a Cineplex location).

Move does not have much substance but it is so darn entertaining!

Move does not have much substance but it is so darn entertaining!
I agree with you totally, this particular movie is very entertaining even if for the cheesy factor. That tiger fight in the beginning is just so funny.. mind it!! Lol :p Not to forget the Manoj kumar sequence :P

"Yana rascala... mind it!" LOL I just love that whole scene, and SRK was hilarious, deliberately hamming it up to impress Shantipriya and totally butchering the dialogue in the process (well, there were a couple recognizable Tamil words in there IIRC :D). But if you've seen some of the cheesier films from South India, and are aware of that whole atmosphere, it's even more of a hoot since they weren't too far off the mark on how absurd some of the fight sequences are. lol

OSO is pure entertainment, pure fun, and is the epitome of a masala film. You'll watch it with a big grin on your face most of the time. My wife and I saw it in the theater on its opening weekend and left in high spirits. And it didn't hurt that Deepika Padukone is so damn gorgeous. ;) I thought she did a really good job considering that was her first film.

I finally got my OSO on bd today and really enjoyed watching it. Though the picture quality is not reference, its still pretty good and the colors just jump out at you from every frame. I would say its a 8/10 in pq.. I didn't get a chance to listen to it in surround yet, but really liked the overall presentation of the movie. I would enjoy this one for a long time :)

I agree. While not as polished as my biggest disappointment... It was entertaining and who could resist the birthday party scene !!!

So what should we get next ?

Good stuff buddy. Most hollywood movies I only watch once, maybe pull it out again after a couple of years but with bollywood movies, with the songs and all, OSO gets played pretty often at home since my 3 year old has the songs memorized. And they all seem to love SRK! My inlaws were over yesterday and made the comment it looked better being played on blu-ray in my theater vs the actual theater that they watched it at (a Cineplex location).

Same here. Bollywood get played lot often than Hollywood and also everyone enjoys Bollywood more than Hollywood.

It is sad that Bollywood is lagging behind with 3 titles on blu-ray while Hollywood probably has exceeded 1000 blu-ray titles.:( It is much better than nothing. :)

As an encouragement, within what I can do as an individual, at this stage I expect to purchase all Bollywood blu-rays (if they are sold for reasonable prices as Hollywood blu-rays).

It is nice if Bollywood studios give us information on blu-ray developments. It will be a pleasure if an insider participates in a forum like this one. :):):)

Well, several films were mentioned earlier in the thread as being available for pre-order soon, but I don’t know if any of them have been officially announced. Out of those, though, I’d say Omkara and Taare Zameen Par. The first is an awesome adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello with Ajay Devgan in the title role and Saif delivering a particularly memorable performance. Great film. The other is a lovely little film dealing with the topic of dyslexia and how ignorant a lot of people in India still are when it comes to understanding it. The boy who plays Ishaan, the youngster afflicted with the learning disability, is simply wonderful in the role, and Aamir Khan puts in one of his typically fantastic performances as the teacher who recognizes the problem and helps Ishaan overcome it. I know some people criticize films that create artificial scenarios to manipulate people’s feelings, but this is a truly emotional film that genuinely makes you think and laugh and cry. And considering this was the young boy’s debut role, I can’t say enough about his acting. Unlike a lot of child actors who over-emote or overdo their lines, he brings a realistic portrayal to the character that trumps the performances of many older actors in Bollywood.

I got a chance to compare the audio quality of OSO last night finally. There's absolutely no difference between the DD and the True HD track.. seems like the same encode was ported over with no advantage gained in the audio. I would still enjoy it for what it is though :)

I'm pretty sure that's an upscaled version. I've seen copies of "720p" Lagaan torrents all over the 'Net and while the PQ might be good, it's not true HD.

Lagaan was well made film, only bar, was it needed a short, English translated version like CT did for MK. and again, I would insist, have options to watch film with or without songs as seamless branching, on BR will do the trick.

Now this is a different story, that films like Saawariya, OSO, Hey Baby that only sell, for glitter gel, floss, songs basically, if you remove songs, the film is left ZILCH, NADA! unfortunate though but reality.

I wouldn't put Om Shanti Om in the same category as those other two films. Although it doesn't have a revolutionary plot, it's a really, REALLY fun pure masala film with the added element of Farah Khan's ode to '70s Bollywood, which is simultaneously mocking and reverential. It may not change anyone's world-view or provoke deep discussion on thematic elements in film, but it sure isn't an insult to the intelligence like Heyy Babyy or an overly-melodramatic cheese-fest like Saawariya.

And it has Deepika Padukone, which is enough in itself. :D

OSO, was a mixture of two old bollywood films, madhumati and karz.

thus could be called OSO AKA MADHUMATI KA KARZ lol.

Heyy Baby was utter non sense!

Deepika enough for OSO, and Guy's buttony Butt show sufficient for Saawariya, for discretional viewers lol.

Imho, Karz did not withstand time factor on re viewing but Madhumati is an absolute Gem B&W classic with haunting melodies, must watch. Unfortunately no GOOD dvd, just junk releases.:o

Totally agree about Madhumati. It's one of my all-time favorite films -- a dream-like, elegantly romantic film with one of the great beauties in cinema history (Vyjayanthimala) and some unforgettable songs. I really, REALLY wish they'd go back, clean up the print and remaster it for Blu-Ray. The Indian film industry really needs to pay more respect to its classics and give them the kind of treatment Hollywood studios do for their most treasured movies.

I agree! remaking classics to destroy their magic is criminal. A recent attempt of remaking Umrao jaan, Sholay was simply a unforgivable disaster imho.

These films are simply MAGICAL MOMENTS that can not be recreated unfortunately.

More so, coloring/butchering they have done to Mughl e azam, Naya Daur is simply despicable.

These few films is Bollywood's heritage and should be RESTORED, REMASTERED in its ORIG FORM and possibly re released.

I did like remastering , cleaning up orig soundtrack too.

BLURAY is far fetched, it is unfortunate there is not a decent simple dvd either.

Bollywood industry is just raking money cheap, for film houses, distributors, those people are not TRUE ART FANS to spend money, restoring those old gems!

Vctoria 203 was nothing a classic, but newer contemporary version, with new technique, fell flat on its face! Older charm with Ashok Kumar, Pran is not repeatable!

Thats why I say! Please if you can not RESTORE, leave classics alone for lord sake!

Hello,

I was wondering when YRF would be starting distributing movies on Blu Ray. I remember a survey that had come out on the site but since then no further news has come out on what YRF plans to do or what will be their first release. Also, there was a contest for which no winners were announced either. Could you kindly advise?

I received the following as a reply:

Greetings,

Thank you for your mail.

The information received from the survey is being evaluated internally and will be taken into consideration as and when we decide to release products on Blue Ray. The winners of the contest were randomly selected each month and were notified directly of their winner status.

Blu Rays are bought by Westerners mostly. With the rampant piracy of Bollywood films and lack of quality awareness in India itself and among NRIs the market is rather limited for now so there is modest interest in producing BDs. If you want to see more buy what's available (if it's acceptable quality).

I expect at least NRIs (and the others from the region) will start appreciating blu-ray PQ with the purchase of large HDTVs. Pirated dvds look awful on plasma/lcds.

The Bollywood studios should be proactive and provide content to get the ball rolling.

Bollywood has done very well on blu-ray PQ - and expect this trend will continue. Blu-ray is an excellent tool to combat piracy and should be used to tap into the current pirated-dvd market which is worth millions of dollars.

+1 to that. There are so many movies i would buy in a hearbeat if they become available in bluray. I already own OSO and Saawariya in BD. Forget about pirated dvd's, the other day i was watching what is probably the best possible DVD version of DDLJ on dvd and it was appalled at how bad it looked even upconverted. Ironically the dvd case itself is one of the fanciest i've seen :p

We really need some quality BD transfers at least for some of the popular movies from Bollywood.

it is unfortunate, that to watch a hindi movie in good SD quality, atleast you have to go up to bluray if available, as their SD are so abysmal quality.

This thread title reminds me: One of the things that has always amazed me is how persistently over-driven the soundtracks of most Bollywood films are (that I've seen). They almost always sound like they have been pushed to the level at which they distort. We had a TV station that played tons of bollywood films and it was a consistant signature of those films. When I go to our Little India (in my city) and there are bollywood movies playing...there it is again. I check out some bollywood movies on youtube...same distorted sound. I haven't seen this persistent issue anywhere else but Bollywood films, at least pre-90's bollywood films. I've always wondered about it and wondered "what's the deal?" Is someone
in the studio shouting at the engineers: "louder! Louder!"

(I'd think that newer releases are better in this regard...)

i think its only the engineers not only in media labs and the engineers in basement
its the rights with ratrace whoever releases and push to the market they win
the reason: the consumer also called pirate
if everyone push for quality then only we will see the originality

i think this is the good time to push the quality

mock my words: u will see 3-6 dvd quality movies on bluray or atleast they upconvert and compress to fit 3 movies atleast and everyone most of the pirated consumer will buy.
i hope it won't happen .

Yes the blu ray affords better quality but what i meant was if you are using as a master the inferior pq/aq of a dvd, converting it to bluray will not add the details where there were none to begin with.

When HDD cost, download cost and also blank blu-ray disk cost are considered, not to mention time and effort, is it worthwhile for someone to download blu-ray rather than purchasing the disk?

I doubt that torrents could cause a dent on blu-ray sales.

I am not sure whether there is an economical/feasible way to recreate an original blu-ray in full quality on a blank disk and defeat copy protection.

It really ticks me off that Yash Raj Films hasn't stepped up to the plate to release films on blu ray with a good transfer, such as DDLJ, Kal Ho Naa Ho, K3G, etc.

Someone asked if the reason there aren't many blu rays is because of the lack of BD in India. It really doesn't matter because these companies' releases overseas make them tons of money and that's what Bollywood on BD is all about.

There are hardly any HDTV's in India, let alone HD content, let alone BD.

The key is to get the genuine retailers on board and push through them. They need to be committed and prepare to invest few hundred dollars on a blu-ray player and a good quality display. Perhaps the Indian studios should assist the genuine retailers to achieve this.

The studios need to provide financial assistance to retailers to set-up a blu-ray player and a high quality display. There should be a coordinated effort across all Indian movie studios. Eros, Yash Raj, Ayngaran, UTV, Sony .....

I am sure once people see the quality difference, they will not go for the dreadful pirated DVDs. Studios are looking at millions of dollars worth untapped business. Undoubtedly, it is a huge potential business which needs investment.

As I understand it is not possible to setup a blu-ray plant to produce pirated blu-rays. I expect Sony will do everything possible to keep it that way.:)

Be careful if you are planning to invest. You will only lose money releasing movies in any South Indian languages. And rule #1, never trust your money with others in Indian movie business. Telling you with experience. They will tell you rosy words before you invest and once they have your cash, they will say internet and priracy is hurting us.

Telling you because we folded iDreamDVD few years back. BTW, I live in VA too :-).

hey everyone i just found this this thread and am very happy that it exists, i was thinking about starting one if it didn't.

just wanted to ask what everyone's favorite HD bollywood movie is? So far i've only been able to experience bollywood blurays from mkv downloads, hopefully that will change in the near future. Someone earlier in the thread made mention that his local walmart had copies of Om Shanti Om in Bluray. This boggles my mind. I'm up in Canada here and if I ever walked into Wallmart here and saw a bollywood bluray (let alone bollywood DVD), i think i'd pass out ;)

For me, from what i've seen so far, the picture quality seems to be improving. I saw Jodhaa Akbar in theaters and really enjoyed the film, which had a great presentation on celluloid. I was not disappointed by the mkv version, by far it is the sharpest, cleanest transfer i've seen which does the visuals justice for the movie. I hope the movie become available for distribution in north america soon.

Next to that I would count Sawaariya as a beautiful beautiful transfer, crisp, sharp and clean, vibrant colours, but i do not think it is a very enjoyable film. I would say Om Shanti Om is next in terms of quality, but seems a bit soft compared to the previous two; nonetheless much better than the dvd version which itself is a very good transfer to begin.

Was wondering if people with the real blurays could voice their opinion on what their favorite bollywood blurays are and whether the quality level is going up with each new release.

I don't think i can pick a favorite yet cuz only 3 bollywood blurays are out so far: My list is based on PQ wise:

1> Sawaariya
2> Om Shanti Om
3> Heyy Babyy

I own all three of them and will also buy Chandi chowk to china if it comes out on bluray next month.

4 x Bollywood and 1 South Indian movie are available on blu-ray.

Both Jodhaa Akbar (Bollywood) and Sivaji (Ayngaran - South Indian studio) are very good PQ very close to saawariya.

I live close to a WalMart Superstore in Scarborough (Ontario) and they do carry quite a lot of Bollywood titles on DVD......and very cheap (roughly around $8 each), and the one I went to had a few copies of Hey Baby and Om Shanti Om on Blu, both for around $18.97 each.
I have picked up OSO but haven't had a chance to look at it as yet.

blu-rays. $18 canadian works out to about $14USD at today's exchange.

There's also a surge in number of concert and movie disks in BD in asian chinese malls. The chinese BD's are much more expensive, between CDN35-60, but there's about 30 distinct titles.

I picked up IpMan and RedCliff from a mall in markham.

Thanks for the good news. Looking forward to these releases.

Any news from Yash Raj? I am disappointed with Yash Raj blu-ray progress since they have so many excellent titles for blu-ray release.

I heard that New York from Yash Raj was shot in HD so I'm hoping this movie will come out in bluray.
