any updates?

No updates - frustrating … It is nice if the Bollywood studios give details of their blu-ray release plans.

I remember once (last year) Eros CEO indicated that they are committed to blu-ray HD and the selected Eros catalogue will be released on blu during next couple of years. But no details were given.

Absolutely nothing heard from Yashraj. It is a big disappointment.

Ayngaran has shown that they are committed to blu-ray and some release plans are available. Thanks Ayngaran.:)

The third Tamil blu-ray Billa is out from Ayngaran. Although specs doesn't indicate, it most likely has 5.1 Dolby Digital. This was the case for the previous blu-rays (from Ayngaran) Villu and Shivagi. The English subtitles are within the frame which supports flat-panel zoomers and CIH.

Staring: "Ultimate Star" Ajith, Nayanthara, Nameetha and others

Ayngaran is really contributing to Indian blu-ray take-up. It is a shame that Bollywood is lagging behind, especially Yash Raj.

You can buy direct from Ayngaran, UK. They post overseas. Not sure about the US retailers.

I have seen Villu blu-ray and it has outstanding PQ. One of the best blu-rays that I have seen (including Hollywood releases). I have seen many inferior Hollywood blu-rays.

Have seen Slumdog. An interesting movie.

The PQ is no way near the latest Ayngaran releases, in fact inferior to all other Indian blu-rays. I think some parts are filmed on video cameras and these cannot be good as film cameras.

I find Slumdog superior looking to OSO. And it won the Oscar for best cinematography. So much for bad quality due to video cameras . (Most of it was shot on a digital cinema camera, not video camera, by the way).

Yes, indeed Slumdog won 8 academy awards. But it has a different feel to OSO and Shivaji which are considered as best movies by the Indian populace.

Digital cinema cameras are still not good as celluloid film cameras and I expect there is a fair way to go at least to catch-up.

No news directly from Bollywood studios about blu-ray releases - it is a shame. Next could be Ghajini but cannot say for sure. Most likely the next Tamil blu-ray would be Kuruwi. Haven't heard any news about the Dostana blu-ray release.

Guys I am sick and tired of waiting and waiting and waiting for Bollywood to release some Blu rays. The few which have been released are lying with me plus 35-40 Hollywood ones. However Bwood exceedingly slow in far as HD mastering is concerned & the wait is pathetic. We have such wonderful and colorful collection of movies in industry but alas none of them are being converted on Blu ray. I had spent 2 lacs on LCD and a lakh on my projector 2 yrs back with blu ray player. Today I am tired to checking almost the same 3-4 titles being talking about each day. Bolloywooddvd site talks about a few titles, but again they stay in preorder state for yrs. Could we collectively do something to push these guys to churn out more ? I am waiting for the day when I walk into a store at Delhi to find 3-4 hundred popular bollywood titles lying on the shelves.

Welcome to the forums.. i think the day that you see 3-400 bollywood titles on blu would probably never come sadly. There is not that much of a demand per se because the average Indian consumer does not own the equipment required(for whatever reasons). And Bollywood is not that mainstream with audiences outside of India(apart from NRI crowd).

Its just a handful of people who have invested into all this, so from a business perspective i guess it's not very lucrative to spend the time and effort. That said i would absolutely love to see at least the great classics in bluray and would be willing to pay premium for them.

Also, there are few high quality HD transfers of pre DI age Bollywood films. It's not easy to make good HD transfer from worn out negatives. Most films require restoration first, on film or digital. And who wants smeary transfers full of DNR filtering and sharpening halos. Better nothing than this.
Anyway, there is a good chance that "Dil Chahta Hai" is coming to Blu Ray still this year in a digitally restored version made from the original negative. The transfer is in the final stages.

Now, if Farhan Akhtar can get 'Lakshya' (and maybe 'Don') out on Blu-ray, I'll be a happy camper.

Surprised that Yash Raj Films hasn't done any Blu-rays (they did try DVD-A, I picked up all four titles).

.
Lakshya is one of the first Bollywood films with a DI. The DI was junked after film out. There is a HD transfer made from the negative from the DI. Quality is mediocre, but better than the DVDs of course. Don had a DI and has a HD transfer made from it. Pretty good quality.

This might be some good news for bollywood bluray:

Eros has seen revenues from distribution of physical DVDs to Walmart and Best Buy rise, though they have been affected by a reduction in the price point. So far, the company has released BluRay 2 titles in the Blue Ray format, and intend to release 25-50 further titles as a combination of new and catalogue in Blu Ray format in the current year.

Firstly I should thank Eros for this announcement. I hope Eros will release 25-50 titles during next year or so as intended. Also, hope the picture quality of Eros blu-rays will be equal or better than Ayngaran blu-ray releases.

Blu-ray means selling HD quality - not beautiful packaging. The blu-ray customer base will not make a purchase decision based on the packaging, rather they would evaluate the quality of the picture before making a purchase decision.

Also should note that the blu-ray quality cannot be mass produced by the pirates (unlike crap quality DVD reproductions). Hence, studios could use blu-ray to attract previously untapped markets. In order to do this, the studios should maintain the highest quality blu-ray transfer standards so that the market could easily see the difference between high quality blu-rays and other pirated products. If blu-ray transfers are marginally better, then the market will easily overlook the quality-advantage and consequently, Bollywood blu-ray effort could fall apart while attracting a bad name on quality standards.

The good news is that both Eros and (more so) Ayngran have gone in the right direction with blu-ray releases. Future blu-ray release should capitalise on the existing knowledge and further improve the picture quality of the transfers so that the western markets can be easily attracted to Indian cinema.

Hey about 12 yrs back when I wanted a digitized movie I was excited to buy a pirated copy of 'Contact' and 'Twister' in VCD format from Palika Delhi. Paid 10$ equivalent for each. Coz I was fedup of buying VHS Tapes. Never knew that the stores would subsequently be flooded with all those original Bollywood titles for 1$ or 2 $ coz I had invested 500 $ on my VCD player and now you can buy one for 15-20 $ from the market. Same thing happened with DVD's. And Same way Blu Ray is an expensive proposition today and I guess within next 3-4 yrs it will take the position of what DVD's are today and DVD's would replace VCD consumer and VCD's might become extinct as VHS has today. After 3-4 yrs we in this forum could be talking about RED/5K Epic /3K Scarlet and also ......the possibility of Bollywood releasing a few titles in this technology :)

Hey, I agree with you on the vhs to vcd to dvd conversions.. but in bluray the cost isn't intrinsic to the player alone.. its the HDTV's that are still a lot more expensive in India compared to the rest of the world. Once the tv prices are more approachable i think bluray has a chance. I would love nothing more than what you said coming true :D

Yash Raj as well ....Yash Raj is usually leading the way when it comes to these things (I have a few of their DVD-Audio discs), so I'm a little surprised they haven't tried at least a couple of their more popular titles on Blu-ray. They market to the NRI crowd (I mean, look at some of their recent movies) and know that there is some Blu-ray penetration here in the states. If they could try a few titles in an almost dead format (DVD-A) then they could do the same for a growing format (BD).

Yash Raj has DVD audio discs, I didnt know about it  Which ones are available and where can they be bought from?I first picked up the DVD-A of 'Dhoom:2'. The disc included some bonus tracks: multi-channel mixes of Halla Re (from Neal 'N' Nikki), Chand Sifarish (from Fanaa), Kajra Re (from Bunty Aur Babli), and Salaam Namaste (from... well, you know). The surround mix turned out to be tasteful rather than distracting.

So I ordered the other three DVD-A titles listed: 'Veer Zara', 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom', and 'Ta Ra Rum Pum'. The latter included four bonus tracks as well: Ke Raha Mera Dil (from Kabul Express), Mere Hath Me (from Fanaa), Chup Chup Ke (from Bunty Aur Babli), and My Dil Goes MMMM (from Salaam Namaste). All were good.

Considering those bonus tracks had three movies in common (Fanaa, Bunty Aur Babli, Salaam Namaste), I get the impression that those entire soundtracks were also mixed to discrete multi-channel, but never released on DVD-Audio. Too bad we only get a sampling of a couple of songs from each of those movies.

BTW, I bought them directly from Yash Raj, back when they sold through their website. They don't sell on-line any more, so I don't know where you can find them nowadays. Amazon? eBay? The local Indian video/CD shops have no idea what I'm taking about when I try to describe DVD-A.

Good quality image and sound. Some minor issues with slightly messed up textures at times. I suspect DNR on the DI. Worth a purchase if you can play region B and know Hindi/Urdu or French.

Feedback is coming in from the 4 new Eros BDs and it's not so good. Partner is upconverted SD, apparently. The others look more like HD but Saawariya or Jodhaa it ain't. And no lossless sound, just DD.

I'm thinking DDLJ, K3G, Kal Ho Naa Ho, etc, etc.

I tried an order of RNBDJ as a test, just received notice it's been shipped. :)

Sorry for the thread hijack but can anybody let me know where to rent original Bollywood movies either BD or DVD?
Most of the online store (Desicompany etc) rent pirated copied movies. ZDag rents original movies but unfortunately they are shutting their doors. I've been a happy member.
Netflix does not carry all the movies and they are really slow in getting the current releases.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated? Or if you wish you can respond to this thread

I looked for 'Billu Barber' on Amazon and it had one review warning "This is an upconverted SD on blu ray. Buyers beware. Do not buy."

I've run into the same thing when look for anime on Blu-ray (e.g., 'Yukikaze' BD was an upconvert from 480p to 1080i).

Anyone know a way to reliably find out which Bollywood BDs are upconverts vs which ones are real HD transfers (like the upcoming 'Dil Chata Hai')?

That one person might have thought it was an upconvert, but I own it, and I don't think it is. One thing to note, though, is that the DVD itself is one of the highest quality Bollywood DVDs I've seen, so...

I'm reading that the just-released Rab Ne Bana De Jodi is one of the best BW blu-rays yet.

You'll find Bollywood DVD's and blu-rays much cheaper from nehaflix.com, btw. And I've never gotten a pirated movie from them.

Thanx for the tip Pagali, I'll check out Nehaflix.

I was watching AVS (Asian Variety Show) on TV today and they mentioned that Yash Raj Films was releasing 10 movies on BD. They also said to look for up to 50 desi movies on BD in 2010.

Will still have to be careful about upconverts vs new transfers.

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is well-worth the 18 bucks at Nehaflix. Picture quality is on par with Sawaariya. Sawaariya has dark sets. IMO, RNBDJ has more eye candy, brilliant colors, and Anushka Sharma is quite easy on the eyes. :) Unfortunately, there is no lossless track. What a shame. A True HD or HDMA track would've made this Blu-ray perfect, since all the songs were quite nice. Instead there are lossy Dolby 5.1 and legacy DTS.

Edit: After further viewing, picture quality is not as sharp as Sawaariya, not as detailed, but still a quite good quality Blu-ray nevertheless.

what's the verdict about the quality of DDLJ ?? It is one of my most favorite bollywood movies and would love to have it on Blu-ray.

I got my copy of DDLJ over the weekend. The video quality i believe is as good as it can get. There are some soft shots but i feel they are inherent to the photography and not the transfer. Other than that, this is as beautiful as i have seen this movie till date, the colors are very realistic looking and there appears to be no filtering/DNR to my eyes.

One note of caution though, the soundtrack is in DTS/DD and does not have the newer codecs(not that it matters too much IMHO). Also the soundtrack seems to suddenly go hot when the songs come in. I was listening to it through my tv speakers instead of my HT so YMMV.

Also the YashRaj animation or the DDLJ Logo animation(comes when you start up the disc) has horrible pixelization.. so i was really worried when i saw it. But once the movie started it's all a non issue.

Overall very happy with the purchase, would certainly recommend this! I'll now be able to put away the crappy dvd i got from India that in all its fanciness has a horrible pq even by dvd standards.

Ditto here with Billu from Netflix. You get a splash screen telling you about the wonders of Blu Ray, (they seem to miss the great DRM it has though :) ) and the disc then gives you a blank screen.

This is on a sony blu ray player with the most recent firmware update.....

Isn't it great that the technology designed to stop real pirates does nothing but we honest folks have to wait 3 minutes for some discs to play, during which time the player is working on de and re scrambling it. For someone who rarely watches a movie twice (and hence would NOT keep a copy) this is a lot of wasted motion and electricity.

We returned Billu for a second disc, and it didn't play either. Sorry Shah Rukh, not tonight.

In case anyone is still wondering how to get Billu to work on blu ray in your PS3, I found a workaround on another site.

Apparantly, there is an authoring error. You have to somehow navigate to title 5, chapter 1 to play the movie from the start:

I just bought the Billu blu ray yesterday and had the same problem on my PS3. Don't know if the solution was posted, but if you go to the control panel (the triangle button) and go to the "Go To" option, there should be a display that pops up in the bottom right corner saying the title number, chapter, etc. I messed around and discovered that in order to play the movie from the beginning, you have to go to Title 5, Chapter 1. At that point it starts in the beginning and you can skip between chapters to get to songs or what have you. Hope this helps!

Enjoy!

Yes, Force was not good. I am waiting for Desi Boyz now ( not sure when it will come in BD).
As mentioned in this thread, I subscribed to njmtv almost a year ago to rent Bollywood blu-rays, but I find I am almost exclusively renting DVDs only ( as BDs are coming months later than DVD). Only if I like one movie, I buy that on BD when it shows up

God save u from stinky , crappy boyz and stinky puss in boots lol

ZNMD Blu Ray is good looking and the film is good as well. Recommended purchase, and not just for Bollywood fans. The film is made for a world audience and problematic Bollywood formula treatment is lacking. There are songs but they are well integrated and flow with the plot.

I either don't get your inside joke or you can't spell the actor's name.
Salman Khan the farmhand? :-) The plot had the right speed for me. Don't know what a treacherous plot is. It was not too original but compared to the usual Bollywood fare it's very tolerable. The film is far from perfect, but quite decent nonetheless. What I missed most was a stand out superior song.
I'm looking forward to more films from Zoya Akhtar. She is talented, no doubt.

Couldn't agree more, a delightful respite from the usual Bollywood recipe. Unfortunately, it will never get its due recognition from the masala formula fed Bollywood enthusiasts.

BR authoring was excellent for a large screen presentation. No outstanding audio effects or LFE, but the one-liners still punched through!

Wishing for more of these gems.

Farhan Akhtar. The director of the film is his sister, Zoya Akhtar, the lyricist of the film is Javed Akhtar, his father (who is a legend in Hindi cinema). A very "filmi" family indeed. His step mother is the superb Shabana Azmi, a legend herself of independent Indian cinema. And of course he's the writer/director of the much loved film that brought a fresh breeze into Bollywood: Dil Chahta Hai!

ZNMD, as evidenced by mhafner's quoted post. Guzaarish seemed like another original gem until I saw the Spanish language "the sea inside" starring Javier Bardem. SLB directing from a plagiarized script...who'd have thought!

Guzaarish = Mar adentro + Prestige. It's Bansali's weakness that he does not use his own original material. His strength are the visuals/sounds for his films, the technique, the use of the tools of the craft where he sometimes reaches world class level, such as in the delightful song "Udi" from Guzaarish. Breathtaking how at the end he fuses the music/voice with the facial expressions of Hrithik. And Aishwaria blooms in this film, gets a dignity and seriousness she's usually lacking in other films.

+1, I thought ZNMD is quite watchable & far more mature than RA-One ( and a lot of other movies for that matter)
