You definitely want to send discrete codes if your TV allows you to do it - that way it doesn't cycle to the correct input, which can often get mucked up.

All you need to do is change your TV settings. The best way to see what discrete codes are available for you TV have populated your 720 is to hit the device button (on the 720), then select TV, then scroll through all of the pages. Anything that shows on these screens is considered a discrete code as far as the Harmony is concerened.

Next, login (or use the software), go to Devices and click More Options under TV. Select Adjust Inputs...I'm guessing you have "flip through the inputs until I get to the right one....: selected, right? Choose the next one that says "I go directly to the input that I want", then follow the rest of the steps and select only the inputs you need.

Your associated Activities should now go directly to the correct input rather than cycling through them.

Call support if you get stuck....but that should work.

thanks a lot! i really appreciate your help! i'll try that when i get home tonight...i think i will like this remot even more when i get this issue resolved! it bugs having to continually correct it w/the help button and finding that i have to redo it everytime!

i guess i would do this w/all the other devices as well, right? my hd receiver, tivo, oppo, etc.?

thanks again.

I programed my 720 this morning and everything works great. Only took about 10 minutes. (DISH VIP-622, Sony TV, Onkyo AVR and DVD/CD) I am sure over the next few days there will be some tweeks.

Two questions, when I push the right arrow button under the LCD or any of the three buttons on the right side of the LCD the screen distorts. Is this common? Second, the little rubber cover for the USB port will not stay closed. Has anyone had similar issues?
The rubber cover doesn't really "lock" in place....I just push it in with some force and it always stays closed.

I haven't experienced your other issue - sounds like you may have gotten a bad remote.

Is the problem only with the TV inputs?? Does all the other gear comes on correctly?

Is the problem only with the TV inputs?? Does all the other gear comes on correctly?

yeah, i finding that the problem is mainly that the 720 selects the wrong input more times than not...everything else comes on correctly...although i still have to tweak each device remote settings so it's the same as the its original remote but i havent had a chance to delve into yet...for example, my motorola hd receiver/pvr remote has a swap button (since its dual tuner) so you can watch another channel while it's recording something else.

while you've been so generous w/the help, let me ask you this...i was trying to set up favorite channels on the TV (ota) so i'm entering 94.8 as the nbc channel in my area on the website software but when i try to access it on the 720, it doesn't seem to work... is there a different way to enter the channel number...like do i put the period in or just enter 948?

the favorite channels works fine on the motorola receiver/pvr activity.

thanks.

Then all you need to do to solve the input problem is make the adjustments I described in your TV settings.

What Moto box do you have? I've got the 3412...when I press my Watch Cable activity, I programmed the screen to show the following commands: OnDemand, MyDVR, LiveTV, SWAP, 16:9 and 4:3 on page one and some others on the 2nd page. Don't spend time changing things on the device, spend the time tweaking what your screen shows on your activities. Again, these are all discrete codes that have been populated by the Harmony database.

I haven't playes with favorites yets, so I can't help you there - sorry.

thanks...so to get the discreet codes for all of these, i just go to "Device" on the 720 and page through it to get the discreet codes? or do i go to the website program?

Actually, I described the easiest way to see what the discreet codes are by looking at the device choices on the 720.

To actually program using these codes, you do this either on the device or the activity. For what I described earlier (to fix the input issue you have), you change the settings of the TV (under Devices). To customize what the screen shows after you push an Activity button, you'll go to that Activity, choose Customize, then choose Change the Behaviour of Buttons. Scroll to the bottom where you'll see Custom Button Label, and any device associated with that Activity will show up to the right. That's where you choose what shows up on the screen when you push that Activity.

Make sense?

Thanks for the response. You seem to be the answer-man when it comes the this remote. These are just miner annoyances but Costco makes it so easy I think I will exchange it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is up with this Mattardo guy. He seems to be the only person in the world, or at least on this thread, that has trouble operating this remote. I have spent hours learning about, setting-up, calibrating, and tweaking my HT system. Same with my computer. (Setting up my 720 took all of 10 minutes.)

There will be a bit of a learning curve and it takes some time to get new electronics set-up, customized and operating the way you want them to. If you are not willing to invest a little time and learn something new that is fine. But please stop gumming up this thread for the rest of us with all your pointless posts. Yes, I did say please. Again.

I just got my 720 last night and am still in the process of programming it.

I do have one question: the default beahvior of the remote seems to be to switch off any devices not involved in an activity. Is there a way to disable that? I'd like to set up my own macros (as activities) and would rather the remote simply issued the commands I specified in the macros and left all other devices strictly alone.

Is there a different way to create macros, or are macros on other remotes the same as activities on this one?

Thanks,
Rajiv

No problem - it actually became kind of fun playing around with settings, changing the screens, etc. I'm no expert - their Support really helped educate me, they great to deal with.

Good luck with the exchange.

thanks.

I have been searching and searching for the same thing: "How do you enter digital subchannel as favorites?" In my case, it's OTA for an HR10-250. I couldn't find an answer.

I just got off the phone with support they said there is a way to learn the "dot" or "dash" command and then use that in the favorites. I haven't tried it yet, but hopefully I can get it to work.

Hopefully that's enough keywords for others to search. I'll post when/if I get it working.

BTW, phone tech support was really really helpful. I had to wait on hold for quite a while, but once I reached level 2, they are very patient and knowledgable -- unusual these days!

Always try to get to Level 2 if you aren't getting anywhere with the Level 1 techs. Just my experience.....they really are much more knowledgeable.

So what is it?

Unfortunately, I don't have it working yet. :-( Apparently it's built-in for HR10-250 devices set on address 0, but I have mine set on address 3 and that means figuring it out myself. Sorry for the delay, hopefully I'll have time to mess with it tonight.

BTW, something else I learned from support. On the 720, when you press the "Favorites" button there is a bug that takes you to page 2 of your favorites instead of page 1. She verified what I was seeing and said they will look into it further.

Well, Mattardo has the honor of being the first and only person on my twit filter list (otherwise known as ignore list). If you do not like a product, have a hard time utilizing the product, work for a different company, it does not met your needs or whatever, say so and move on. This guy/gal just does not get it, must be a lonely person.

The 720 does as advertised in my opinon.

Exchanged my 720 and the screen on the new one does not distort. I updated it to my previously saved config. After 2 days of use I made several changes to the configuration and the remote is working great and doing everything I want it to. Total programming time was only about 1 hour.

Have you checked the assignments under Activity -> Customize -> Change behaviour of buttons?

If so, try re-learning the command from your original remote.

Hi there,

I just recently purchased a Harmony 720 from Costco. I have a Harmony 688 and loved that.

I thought I'd give this a try because of the color screen stuff and the rechargable battery and motion sensor. (And because I'm going to get a new HDTV fairly soon if everything goes right).

I had no problem programming since I am a prior Harmony user. But I have a few questions.

I noticed that in the beginning of the thread there was talk of the letter rubbing off and wondered if that was going to happen to me. Then I said the picture posted to see what the problem was. I looked at my remote and I guess Logitech solved the problem. THE JUST REMOVED THE LABELS ALL TOGETHER!

That was simple. So where it's supposed to say for example: REC there is nothing.

Or did I just get a brand new remote with rubbed off labels.

Second, I'm download (I forgot which web site but I think the link is posted somewhere here) the backround picture replacement. So I thought were real nice, but after installing the backround it seem they were not sized correctly for this model but for another Harmony with a different sized screen.

Does anyone know of a link where I can backrounds for the 720.

Next question:

I have an activity and it seems that the software/web site sets up all devices as to be turned on with going thru an activity setup. I added a device (my air conditioner) to my activity but do not want it turned on right from the start.

I only wanted this because I am too lazy to switch to devices to go to the air conditioner device to either turn it on or off while watching TV.

My Harmony 688 does it right, it's added into the activity as a device and then I have a label for AC Power. That's all. It does not attempt to turn on the AC when I press the activity (Watch PVR).

So for a work around, I programmed a OFF sequence into the activity at the end of the activity startup. So the AC turns on and then a second later it turns off. Not a graceful way of doing it.

So that's the question, how to prevent it from being turned on in the first place.

Note: for some reason the Harmony 688 does it right, and does not turn it on in the first place.

Thanks guys and gals!
Robert
(I was going to try and post my email address but the system prevents me until I"ve posted 5 time, strange system).

Well, I just drove a fair distance to pick up a 720 at a WalMart to compare to an 880 for my bedroom system. I was excited when I called and the associate said he had it in stock (it was the 5th store I had called). I asked him to confirm the price and model number, so he put me on hold and came back and said, "yes it's the Harmony 720, and it's 98.89$." I then broke multiple motor vehicle laws to get there, only to be smacked in the face with the reality of it being 159.99$!!   I stated that I had asked a salesperson double check the model and price and was met with the reply of, "uh.... they must have been looking at the price of the 520 on the hook....... uuuhhhh, sorry about that" . WTF?!?!? It took me 12 seconds to bring the remote to the little scanner thing and see that it was 160 bucks! I still bought it, but I'm seriously concidering returning it along with the 880 I bought off their website. I called customer service and explained that I felt I was a victim of "bait and switch" and that I was very unhappy. They said a supervisor would get back to me within 4-5 days.
Sorry, but I had to vent. I'll probably go with the 720 over the 880 for the since I like the fact that I can feel the different buttons without looking at the remote every time, and the fact that I believe it's more comfortable in the hand and better laid out overall. If WalMart doesn't do anything, I'll just return both and get the 720 from CostCo's website.

Oh yea, and I LOVE the "ignore" feature to deal with "re-tardo"(mattardo). It's great! And they need not reply, since I won't see it..... what a DONKEY!

Don't know about channel logos sorry, but I can help with your A/C question.

Select "More Options" for the A/C device.
Select "Adjust Power Settings"
Select "This device has no power buttons".

2 part question here.
Can I rearrange the order in which my activities are shown on the main page? I have a Homer Simpson background which favors the left side of the screen. I have 3 activities, and would like them to be on the right side only. Also for the fact that my wife and I are both right handed. Possible??

Also, is it possible to change the icon for an activity? I use a DVR box from my cable Co., and a ReplayTv and they both use the same icon. This one isn't that big of a deal, but it would be a nice option to have different "looks" for the 2 activities. Thanks in advance for the help.

I'm very close to having everything set up the way I want. One small issue however. I have a streamzap remote for my MCE pc and added it as one of my devices. I can't get the Harmony remote to control my MCE pc when in actitivies mode. I have to go to "Devices" and then it works. Weird. It also seems that the IR signal being sent in "Devices" mode is the same as the normal streamzap remote. However, when in Acitities mode the signal is different. (I can see this by the flashing light of the IR receiver.)

Any suggestions?

I had the stupid "popcorn" icon on my screen in two places. I'm a brand new user and until I figure out how to load new icons, I just eliminated them (through preferences, I think). In fact, the screen looks very clean without the icons. Maybe I'll keep it that way.

As a new user, I have a very basic question: What is the difference between using the Harmony application on my computer vs. the one on their website. Why do they have these two different ways to program the remote? Which way is better? Didn't see this answer anywhere in the thread. Thx.

You might need to assign the buttons in Activity mode.

Select Activity -> Customize -> Change behaviour of buttons.

And use the web-based setup(this also answers sucha deal's question). It is easier to use for most people, and it might even have a few more functions available.

2. when I hit watch MyDVR, the first button on the LCD screen is the "Favorites" which i did set up w/the icons and everything. however, i wanted the first button (left) to be MyDVR or at least have MyDVR as the second button (right)...i did have MyDVR in the first slot when i do the cutomize how buttons behave option but MyDVR ends up as the last button the 2nd page...i tried moving it to the second slot and it's still the same...how can i correct this?

Been away the past couple days, good to hear things are working.

For your first question, you can add any command to an Activity. Go to the Activity, choose Customize, then Run the setup wizard again. When you get to the end and it asks if the settings are correct, choose Yes, but I want to add more control of options...

On the next screen, click Save, then Next until you eventually get to the last screen where you can add an action for when the Activity starts (or stops). In the first section (for when the Activity starts), select your DVD, then click the Add button and add the discrete code that opens the tray. You're done! You can do the same for when the Activity stops (just duplicate what you did where it says "When you leave this Activity..."

As for your second question, I had the same thing happen to me and I haven't been able to figure out why something appears first event though I enter it last in the menu. I've been meaning to call Support on this one but haven't gotten around to it.

Good luck!

Yes. Power commands will still be available in Device mode. You can even add them to the LCD screen in activities if you want.

I would like to add one thing to this.
I had to add a pause before the eject command to give my DVD player time to start up so it would accept the command. My DVD player takes so long to start I had to add a 15 second pause before the eject command was sent. That got annoying pretty fast. Now I have to actually walk over to the DVD player and push a button to open the tray. Can you believe it! Hopefully your DVD player starts faster that mine.

 Harmony tech support assurred me that normal people don't touch their equipment...ever. It unsyncs the device. Try keeping the same dvd in your player at all times. Then it should work fine with no need for a 15 second pause.

The sound is just the button itself being pressed and released sort of like the sound the keys on a computer instead of a softtouch button found on many electronics. It is not a sound produced within the remote.

Re: which buttons click

If you go to the first posting in this thread and look at the photo of the remote -- only the silver buttons click when you press them.

And yes, the click is produced mechanically, not electronically.

As much as I love the remote, those clicks and stiffness are annoying as ever. I'm going to keep the remote for another week. If I can't get used to the clicking by then (or if the stiffness doesn't decrease) I might get my refund from Costco and hold on to the 880 until the next incarnation shows up.

Every remote I've looked at has something I don't like, so I've just learned to live with the clicks. It really doesn't bother me too much, but I can see how some might not like it.

What do you mean by stiffness - are you having a hard time pressing the clicky buttons?

I ran into one limitation of the Harmony remotes...

My projector uses "toggle" codes from its remote. That is, the first press of any remote key sends code "a" and the second sends "b", then the pattern repeats. The Harmony can learn either "a" or "b", but not both. When the Harmony is used to control the projector, things don't work as they should.

I contacted Level 2 support and showed them the alternating codes on a couple of keys. Unfortunately, they say they don't support this feature.

I've worked around the problem by learning both "a" and "b" codes into the remote and setting up some Activities such as selecting inputs to use the alternating codes. But for general use of the remote, this is not very convenient.

A good implementation of this feature would:
a) allow selection of a "toggle" feature on some devices
b) during the learning process prompt for a pair of codes rather than just one
c) when using the remote, automatically send the alternating codes on successive presses of the same key

Just thought I'd document this. I don't think there are too many devices with these weird "toggle" codes, but I've see the feature described in several places.

I too find the clicking a little annoying. Mostly while changing the volume while watching a movie. I programmed the up/down arrow buttons the be volume controls while in movie mode to get around this. Eliminating the "clicky" buttons would be a great improvement.

Hi, been watching this forum for awhile.
Got my 720 about a week ago
took about an hour to get all the device info gathered and programed into the 720
worked to perfection first time, and ever since

environment is:
Denon 3805 AVR
Pioneer HD800 plasma monitor
Sony DVD/CD
JVC VCR
JVC Tape (TAPE !!! yup, got some good ole stuff there !!)

Got the tv in the kitchen and master bedroom on the 720 too
all activities work NO PROBLEMS !!

AWESOME REMOTE !!!!!!!

OK, so I configured my 'favorites', my question is where can I find the ICONs for the channels to download so I can add the images to my 720 favorites screen ?

Thanks !!

I just went to google images and searched for "ABC HD Logo" or "ESPN 2 HD Logo" or whatever and right clicked on images that met the requirement (i.e. under 160K). Then I uploaded them into the harmony software. Worked great.

I just got the remote today but i can't get it to function. After setting up the remote, i'm unable to use it because it says it needs to update from the website. Does anybody know what this means because the only traces of this remote on Logitech's site is in their discussion forums?

My 720 is now DOA.

While I wasn't sure, seemed like the illumination on the transport buttons was growing dimmer and dimmer over the past few days. Grabbed the remote last night and the screen was blank, with only the activities button glowing brightly. Tried charging and then removing battery, and it now appears to be dead. So... I set up my 720 to use my Pio Elite 84, and it downloaded all the settings for it, including discrete codes for selecting inputs, etc...

However, for a few options, the 720 only has toggle-style codes, such as selecting a surround mode. It simply toggles thru the half-dozen available Dolby modes. In this way it mimicks the included Pioneer remote, which only has a single button that cycles thru the modes.

However, I just saw THIS POST (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8798557&&#post8798557) in the AVR forum , which describes discrete codes available for jumping directly to a surround sound mode. For example, the post states:

Example of the Standard IR Codes on the Pioneer Web Site.
Standard for Multi-Channel
Depending on Source A59A+A5C9
+ EX A59A+A5CA
+PL2x MOVIE A59A+A5CB

So, assuming I want "Dolby PLIIx + Movie" mode, I'd need to teach the 720 the code "A59A+A5CB". Given that the factory remote doesn't have a discrete button to learn from, how would I do this?

Is there a way to submit updated codes in to the Harmony Database?

Thanks.

You need to get the codes in Pronto Hex format. The second post of the thread you linked to has a link to the device profile in Pronto format. You will then need to extract the actual hex codes from the device profile using "ProntoEdit", which can also be downloaded from RemoteCentral.

Once you have the Hex codes, email them to Harmony tech support and they will add them to the Harmony database.

Hey magillagorilla,

How long have you had the 720 for? Thanks to everyone on the 720 thread, I am now also an owner of this model. :) I just picked one up today at the Brea Costco in Fullerton, CA. The price was $169.99 plus tax. Haven't played with it yet, but I will after this post. :D

There is a website that has downloadable images of channels for the Harmony remotes, but I don't remember the name. I think I found it via a link from a thread on Remote Central. IIRC, the cite is called everything you need for your harmony.

WOW, OK, Thanks for the pointers to all the icons and backgrounds !!

Here's my daily question.

I loaded my favorites.
The pgm asked me how the remote changes channels, buy numbers, numbers and enter, numbers and text.
It also offered for me to select how many numbers were needed to send to the cable box, 1, 2 or 3

My cable box needs 4 numbers. Such as punch in 0002 to switch immediatly to channel 2

You can put in '2', '02', '002', or '0002'
Any combination will work, here's the rub. If you don't use all 4 digits then the cable box does some calculation to figure out that channel 2 is where to switch to.
I don't like the wait 5 seconds for this to happen, so I always use all 4 digits, or the GUIDE to highlight the channel and then just punch OK.

My 720 works 'ok', but not as 'prefered'. It goes like this, it sends '0', then another '0' then another '0' then the '2' then sends that to the cable box, which then thinks about it and then switches channels.

Is there a way to:
1) have the 720 send 4 digits
2) have the 720 send all digits at once

is there any way to speed up this process ?
if not, to me the 'favoraties' function is pretty much not going to be used. It's faster to punch in the numbers yourself than to use this function.

Thanks for any tips,
Mikey

That's really a tough one. The 720 is easier to hold and enables you to be more precise with your button precesses, though some buttons may be a bit small for some (but it didn't bother me though). The directional pad, channel, and volume buttons drove me crazy though. Stiff and clicky (and I use those buttons too much for me just to ignore this).

I'm not a fan of the 880's curved designed. It's hard to tell one button from the other without looking at the remote and the buttons are all right next to each other. It's difficult for me to use this remote with just one hand without a little effor (and that's where the 720 is better). The number buttons are too far down towards the end of the remote which is also curved which makes using those buttons a bit difficult with one hand. Also, due to the placement of the numbered buttons and the frequency that they might be used they should have weighted the remote better. There's more weight to the back of the remote due to the battery than at the front. Reversing this might have made it easier to use the numbered buttons (as the remote would tend to slide a bit forward when I try to use those buttons instead of backwards due to the weight in the back).

It really comes down to personal preference. You just have to decide which design you like better as they both more or less do exactly the same thing. I plan to keep my 880 and return my 720 due to some of the issue I specified above.

Funny... I like the clicky directional and volume buttons, provides positive feedback for me...also not a fan of the peanut shape... and the screen and tilt sensor is nicer... not to mention the cradle/battery charger setup...and it looks cooler/smaller/slimmer...and my wife likes it... :)

could it be a little more ergonomic?... haven't found a remote yet that is perfectly ergo...they all seem a bit bulky / long ....especially for little hands....but its a remote not a surgical instrument...we can operate it just fine...

Agreed, the clicky doesn't bother me at all....in fact, I didn't really start to notice it until it was brought up here. My only complaint with the 720 is that the number keys could be a bit bigger.

Other than that, works great and much better design than the 880 IMHO.

I have a question:
Can you program a "media" button into the 720 for Playing Music CDs or DVDs?
This is something I like on my 676 for using my CD\DVD jukebox.
IF you can, where would it go?
I like the key layout on this one vs the 880, except I see no "media" button.

I just got a Harmony 720 for my birthday!!

Setup was very easy, but I do have one question.

Is there any way to alter the "soft buttons" on the LCD screen that defaults when an activity is chosen?

For instance, when I use "Play PVR" which is the command for watching tv, the soft buttons default to "A", "B", "C" and a couple others that are not useful. If I want to access my list of recorded programs, I need to go into the device menu, cycle through 4 screens on the LCD until the soft button to get to my recorded programs list appears.

Is there anyway to get this button on the default LCD screen initially?

I hope this makes sense,

Usually it automatically adds that button to the "watch PVR" or "Play PVR" activity.
But if it didn't you can add it.
I don't have a 720 but I have a 676 and the setup should be simular.
You must be refering to your "list" command for your PVR.
You can add that button command to your "Play PVR" activity as a custom soft button.
Just choose "customize" buttons for your activity and scroll down to the bottom where you can add custom soft buttons, and make a new soft button, and from the pvr dropdown, choose the "list" command button(I assume that's the button you want) for it.
Click done.
Upload to your remote.

I am debating on upgrading my 676 to either a 880 or 720.
I prefer the 720 layout and keys to the 880, but the only killer with the 720 is no "Media" button, which I like on my 676 to store my CD\DVD jukebox(Sony DVP-CX995V 400 disk) CD/DVD title lists.

Congrats on your 720! Mine setup just like yours initially. I renamed "Play PVR" to "WATCH TV". For the LCD buttons I programmed 4 of them to control TV functions. Those being, DVR, P.I.P., SWAP and RECALL. The other two buttons control sound modes on my AVR. One is STEREO the other is SURROUND MODE which just toggles thru surround modes. I just use the one screen.

My other "Activities" are WATCH A DVD, LISTEN TO CDS, LISTEN TO RADIO, and SYSTEM SETUP. So the answer to your question is yes. I would suggest programming thru the website. This is how I did it. You can assign any button to do anything and rename your LCD buttons anything you like.

This is my first Harmony and I am no expert. I just played around with the setup menu and figured things out. It might take a few days of using it and some changes here and there but this remote is highly customizable. Once it is setup how you want it is fantastic.

Thanks for the instructions, guys. I went to the website based software as opposed to the local hard drive based software and found it far superior. It was very easy to map the soft buttons as I want them and modify the remote in general.

The one concern I had initially with this remote is the "idiot proof" nature of the software which seemed to limit user functionality. The we based software seems much more powerful and did the trick.

I look forward to continued use and tweaking of the remote.

OK I am still debating between the 880 or 720 as upgrades to my 676.
I could live without the media button that the 880 has if I have to.
But the feel and location of the buttons is important.
I own the 676, and the transport buttons are grouped together at the top as I like.
But the menu, info, guide, exit buttons are grouped around the directional, which I don't like.
I also don't like the ring on the 676 for direction.
The buttons I use the most are the transport(FFW and REW) and directional for moving through the DVR menus and setup menus(I am always changing some setup feature on my AV receiver for sound or speakers).
So those buttons are the most important to me.

Today I finally went out to a couple of targets, walmart, and circuit city to see what they had to evaluate.
I was able to test the 520 + a 550(couldn't find a 720, but I assume it's the same as a 520 except for the color screen).
I wasn't able to control anything(they wre off), but I was able to hold them in my hand and "feel" the keys.

Here is what I found:
The 520 + 550 had great key layouts but:
The transport buttons were sort of mushy and I couldn't feel a tactle confirmation to a button press.
Is this the case with the 720 too?
I use the FFW and REV keys a lot for my DVR and I am afraid that I may get too many clicks(I can have 3 FFW and REV speeds on the DVR), and have my DVR go too fast, etc.
I also liked the directional compared to my 676's ring, but from moving from the right direction to a left direction on the 550 or 520, it seamed that the select button could inadvertingly be pressed.
Is this the case with the 720's too?

Now, to my surprize on what I have read on complaints on the 880:
I actually liked the clicks on the buttons, espescially the transport, which would confirm a FFW command.
Plus the center button for select was firm enough to not inadvertingly push it when changing directions, as compared to the 550.
Buttons on the 880 were close together as stated, and flimsy, but for my small hands that isn't a big deal( but flimsy was a concern for over time though).
Plus the layout on the 880 wasn't as nice as the 720(I like the transport buttons on top as on the 520 vs the bottom as on the 880).

I will be sold on the 720 if it can be confirmed that the transport buttons actually do give good tactle feedback(confirmation of one FFW click), and don't over send FFW signals.
So can any owner of a 720 confirm this for me?

Thanks!
That was a concern of mine, solved.

I like the picture of the directional pad as looking nice and big, so can you tell me how it feels for navigating through menus?

I am just about sold on this remote now.
The only issue maybe the placement of the transport keys.
If I want them on top, then I guess it would be a TC-30(the TC-30 also has a glow button, which maybe nice for bad tilt sensors).
But I would rather stick with harmony support.
I guess the transport keys of the 720 near the directional pad make good sense for DVR users, like me, since those are most frequently used buttons.

As far as my "media" button desire, I read that the 720(or was it the TC-30) map that to a "Fav" softkey for favorite channels(or in my case CD\DVD titles), instead of the media button.
Is this correct?

I also wanted them to enable a media feature for my 676 for DVR favorite channels.
I called tech support and they no longer support favorite channels.
Am I right about this for the 720 too?
I talked to level 1 support, so I wonder on this.

But they do say that "media" titles are still available for CD\DVD jukeboxes.
I hope they keep that.

The directional pad, vol., ch. and mute buttons do click. Some have complained about, I do not care for it all that much myself, but it does give a good positive feedback.

The back of the remote has 2 tiers. I have found that with my index finger resting on the first tier (the battery cover) my thumb naturally falls on the transport keys and with a very slight adjustment I can reach volume, channel and the directional pad. Easy and comfortable to use.

With my index finger on the the other tier my thumb naturally falls on the buttons above the directional pad. With a little adjustment I can reach the 6 buttons that border the LCD screen. These 6 buttons also have that clicky sound and feel.

As for your media button, I have no experience with how that operates this being my first fancy-shmancy remote. But as far as I can tell you can program this remote to do just about anything you want.

The 720 will support favorite channels.

Thanks czzer, however the file I grabbed that was referenced in that thread is a .pcf file. The latest version of ProtoEdit I could find on RemoteCentral (4.0.5 from 8/2002) only seems to want to open .ccf files.

I'm off to Google for a bit on this, but any pointers would be appreciated...

I think the .pcf files are for Pronto NG models, so you will need to get ProntoEditNG. You can get it here (http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/files/rcfiles.cgi?area=prontong&db=other&br=programs&dv=philipsprontong)

Note that there are 2 versions of NG also...ProntoEditNG and ProntoProEditNG. I don't think they are necessarily compatible, so you might end up needing to try both versions.

There is a FAQ on ProntoEdit here (http://www.remotecentral.com/tsu3000/pngfaq.htm)

On the web based setup, you select Activity->Customize->Change behavior of buttons. This gives you a screen where you can assign any command to any button. LCD commands are at the bottom of the page.

Thanks, I do that but it still seems to have buttons on there that I didn't assign. I did get rid of the a, b, c though. There's a fav and favorites channel on there but I will figure it out. This thing is almost dummy proof.

Thanks czzer... snagged those versions and will try and get the Harmony DB updated.

Hi,

I have recently bought a Harmony 785 (its the 720 branding here in Europe) and am quite amazed at what this remote can do.

I have been fiddling with it and have been able to setup most of my activities correctly.

Unfortunatly, I have a small (BIG) problem with the Watch DVD activity.

The problem is that the Harmony seems to keep changing the input of my Receiver (Denon AVR 2106) to VCR-2 even if I tell him to choose "inputDVD".

I can even change the input to something else, use the "inputDVD" option in the remote's screen and it will change back to VCR-2.

I have already tried to teach the harmony using my original remote, but then it does not change to any input... (it's like I have not pressed any key).

I'm at a loss here... I have ran out of ideas.

Does anyone here have a clue about what is happening?

Everything else seems to work alright.

Unless I'm mistaken, the Harmony doesn't have a built-in "sleep" function. I'm guessing that if you're seeing a "sleep" command on your remote, it's there because your TV has a "sleep" button and Logitech has in their database for your make/model. That's why it's only turning off your TV and none of the other equipment.

Have you pushed the "help" button on the remote after you started said activity? It will ask you a series of questions that will walk you through it. I used it twice when it had my tv on the incorrect input and it never happened again. That should work. Otherwise it sounds like you set it up wrong, tinker a little bit.

It sounds like DVD input has the wrong command assigned.

Select Device mode for the receiver and try all the Input commands. Note which one(if any) DOES go to the DVD input.

If none do, learn the command from the original remote. Just make sure you note what command you learn it to(ie overwrite the original "InputDVD" command or learn it as new command"

Then go to "Adjust Inputs" for the receiver device(on the web-based setup) and select "I go directly to the input I want".
When it asks for the command for InputDVD give it the command you found in device mode, or the one you learned earlier. I think there might even be an option here to learn form your original remote...something like "I know what button to press on my original remote".

Query: Will the "favorite channel" hardbuttons automatically change their TV input if necessary as part of their function?

I guess what I mean is if I've selected a regular broadcast channel with one of the hardbuttons and then want to change to an HD channel using another one of the hardbuttons, can the remote be programmed to automatically change the TV input from regular to HD as part of the channel changing process, thus making it a seamless one-button-press channel change from our perspective?

I assume it would be, but just to be sure is the answer the same for both the 880 and 720?

One of the main reasons we've had to maintain our pile of remotes is that we currently need to have the TV remote available to change between TV inputs when we move between regular and HD channels.

Perhaps because his TV does a better job handling SD than his STB (i.e. SD PQ is better via S-video than via HD outputs).

That's about the size of it.

With the HD outputs my TV locks the size of SD channels, leaving me with empty bars on either side. These annoy my wife and I'm somewhat concerned about burn in with them, so I only use the HD output when watching HD channels.

My old STB didn't have this problem, so I'm sure I could also fix it by replacing the box, but if I'm planning to get a universal remote anyway, and it can deal with the issue itself, then that's the path of least resistance.

Cheers,

I have already managed to solve the problem.

The Help button on the remote didn't help at all because it kept sending the wrong code to the AVR, wich set it to the wrong input (it was using a discret code, and not cycling trough the inputs).

As for trying to learn the code from the original remote I had also already tried it, and it failed...

Fortunately learning the command in "RAW Mode" eventually solved the problem.

Thank you all for your help.

Have you tried setting the STB to "Native?"

That way it should send the full 4x3 information when you are watching SD and whatever resolution the HD is will be sent onto the TV with no processing.

Unfortunately, that's the setting that this particular STB seems to lack.

I'll probably upgrade to my cable provider's DVR box at some point, which will likely fix the problem, but in the meantime I'd still like to know whether those hardbuttons will handle input switching for me on channel changes.

I'm new to this site, and have a few questions. After reading this entire thread, it seems there have been a few problems/defects with the 720. Is this really a frequent occurence, or relatively isolated? Would it be a safe gamble to purchase one on eBay and risk defect, or a better bet to purchase one from a retailer with the option of returning/refunding? Which brings me to my final question, are there any sites currently offerring this specific model? I've had some difficulty finding them. Thanks!

I would define two activities: watch HD and watch SD. This way you'd definitely be able to switch inputs. I don't believe you can switch inputs in the middle of activity, at least in any straightforward way. To make it simpler you can create "Watch SD" as clone of "Watch HD" and change only input.

Alternatively, you can switch to device mode, switch input and return back to your activity.

No, the Harmony remotes can't do macros. There is a way to create multiple sequential button presses using "dummy" devices, but you can't choose the timing between the commands that are sent, other than through the device timing (i.e., inter-key delay, inter-device delay, etc.) which would affect timing for ALL commands.

Yes, but only as part of an activity start or end sequence. I do it to set my DVD player to the correct aspect ratio when I switch between viewing on my 4:3 TV and 16:9 projector. What exactly are you needing to do?

MattAM4
12-12-06, 12:32 AM
I need to change the audio output on my cable box (Scientific Atlanta 8000HD) to optical when I want to watch TV. Otherwise, it outputs a constant optical signal while on standby, which, in conjunction with the standby signal from my DVD player (Momitsu V880 DX), screws with the automatic switch on my system selector (Audio Authority 1154A) before it hits my receiver (which unfortunately has a single optical input, necessitating the switch). The only other way to fix the problem using my current equipment (that I can see) is to pull out the DVD player's optical cable when it is not in use, but this hardly seems like an ideal solution (it's what I have been doing, however, since it is faster than changing the menu setting manually). I could potentially have a remote change the audio setting on the DVD player each time, but the menu on the cable box is more easily navigated. (Also, the cable box is always on, while the DVD player takes a few seconds to warm up.)

While on the subject on macros and having not spent much time setting up the 720 or reading the Harmony particulars, how would I go about creating a macro of a series of keypresses (11 or 12 in all)? I use this for toggling CC on a ViP622 with my MX-500 and it works like a charm. Will I be able to do this with the 720?

Hi,

I just picked up the Harmony 720 remote and am having some trouble getting it to control my TV. Specifically I can't get it to correctly switch inputs between two simple activities. I have an older Samsung DLP (HLM617W) which does not support discrete codes for input selection. I normally have to pull up a menu of inputs, select from the list via a scrolling movement and then press another button to select the new input.

The setup for the 720 seems to anticipate this kind of TV but no matter what when I try switching between two activities (Watch TV and Watch DVD) that require a different input on the TV it never switches. The on-screen help on the remote merely states (eg.) "Make sure the TV input is set to Component 1". This is despite the fact that went through the steps to train the remote with the button presses to navigate the TV input select menu.

Am I doing something wrong or does this configuration actually not work?

It looks like it should but I never even see the menu on the TV so it doesn't appear to be even trying to send the proper commands to switch inputs.

Any help out there?

I scanned this thread but I didn't see any solution for this specific generation of TV but I may have overlooked it.

Thanks,

Mike

Does your TV have the option of sequentially changing the inputs instead of selecting them from a menu? My older Mitsubishi has an "input" button that with each press changes the input from Ant A to Ant B to Ext 1 to Ext 2 back to Ant A, etc. The Harmony can definitely handle this, but I'm not sure about it selecting an input from a menu (I'm not saying it can't, I've just never tried).

Nope. Only menu, scrolling and select (even from the side panel buttons on the TV). From other threads that I've read I don't think there is a short cut around this. What concerns me more than anything else is that I personally trained the remote and it doesn't appear to be sending these commands as I don't see the TV respond at all. Could it be that a delay setting is too short?

Are you using the software setup or the web based setup?

You should use the web based setup at http://members.harmonyremote.com

If you select "Adjust Inputs" for the TV device, one of the options is for scrolling through a menu as you described. Make sure this is what it is set to do. Also, make sure the list of inputs matches exactly what your TV actually has...edit the list if required.

If you still can't get it working, give tech support a phone call...that's what they're there for.

You're instructed to "uncheck" the inputs that aren't connected. I've done this but through multiple attempts to get this working I've seen the second list (of editable text fields) sometimes match what I checked (ie. a shortened list) and sometimes its the complete list regardlesss of what I checked. What should the second list look like? Should it be a shortened list that matches what was checked or should it be the complete list of inputs supported by the TV?

So to be clear though, you think this should be working?

I think it depends on whether your TV skips unused inputs. ie if you have an input with nothing connected to it, does the tv skip over it when cycling through. This is an important point, and will obviously affect the sequence required when switching inputs. This is one of the questions asked in the Adjust Inputs setup.

Answer all the wizard questions carefully....make sure to test how your tv actually works before answering.

Yeah, it skips the inputs that aren't connected. Lets say though that I goofed on this point and the remote thinks it has to navigate through the whole list. Wouldn't I at least see the menu pop up on the screen and see it trying to select the correct input? With discrete codes I could imagine that you wouldn't actually see anything onscreen but since I am having to train the thing with explicit command to pull up the menu, scroll and select I would think that I'd see this happening and I am not. The menu never pops up on the TV.

Do you think this is significant?

At one point I was prompted to tweak a delay that appeared to be defaulted to 500ms. I think might be the issue but I can't figure out where there was.

Thanks,

I too am having the same problem.
I upgraded my software to version 7 via the Logitech web page, and have passed through the first level of tech support, awaiting a response form the next level.
There is a module in the software specifically for training the 720 to bring up the menu for inputs, highlights/pre-selects the next input, then do the final selection (three button entries), but once you get that programmed it still doesn't work, and the help screen guides you to a screen that says " Be sure the TV is on 'X' input" or word to that effect.
It's like that episode of Seinfeld when Cramer decides to play like the automated phone attendant for the local theater ... "why don't you just tell me what you want to see".
The "universal" (?) remote, actually tells you to do it manually!
Hopefully TS will have a better answer.
With my Mitsubishi WD-73831 programmed into the 720, the TV Device screen has a single button entry to switch to any input, as well as a "start inputs" selection which brings up my input selection menu on the TV, and allows me to use the direction keys to select the input I need, then using the OK button, it selects the input, so it 'should' be capable of switching the inputs when switching activities automatically, but after trying everything that is readily apparent (programming the 720 with the original remote, changing the labels to as many different things that the TV allows for each input, and adjusting the timing for all the button functions) it just won't do it.
I think it's a bug in the software that runs on the web site, that for some reason will not allow certain macros to be programmed via the original remote, even though it seems to have a step in the software for doing just that.

Hi,
A question on the 720? Does it support using 2 different DVD players? How would you choose which one is being used so that the pause/stop buttons are for the correct player? I have two different dvd players I use depending on what type of dvd I am watching.
Thanks in advance,
Joe H

It's activity based. Just create DVD 1 and DVD 2 or HD-DVD and DVD and only add the desired model under each activity.

Just received 720 from Costco few days ago.
Working ALMOST fine. Here are 2 issues I have right now.
1. When choose Watch DVD, it's turn ON my DVD Oppo981,Reseiver Marantz 8200 and TV Sharp 52D62U on Input 5 of TV.
When choosing Watch TV, it doesn't switch to TV input. I have to do it manually.
2. Sometimes adjusting volume down on my Marantz 8200, the volume actually goes up. Sometimes it works properly.
Any idea? I will try to call Logitech support after Holidays. If they will not be able to help me , remote goes back to Costco. I see some people have issue with inputs switching as well.
Thanks

Sergey,

Yeah, it can be done don't return it yet. Others may also help where I fall short.

The volume thing, you might need to adjust the timing of the repeat signal and that, if I remember (I'm not home right now to doubt check) correct, is located in the device option and it's called INPUT TIMING and POWER SETTINGS. You'll find it. You can adjust how many milliseconds that the signal is sent and how much of a delay to have in between signals especially if it's a repeat key like the volume or channel button.

The switching of video inputs on the TV: You might have to double check how the remote for that device is setup to switch input sources, you have to make sure that your remote does one of several ways of switching inputs, direct button to that input, or if the remote has to cycle thru the input settings and they have to be in an exact order.

At first, it seems tricky or complicated to achive but it can be done, with practice and when you get it, it really works great.

If you miss the input, the first thing to do is hit the 'help' button and that goes thru the functions to make sure everything is the way it should be and can actually help you figure out why the input switching is not working. Because if after using help it can't switch to the correct input then it usually means that the device (in your case the TV) is not setup up properly in the first place.

The database of devices is not perfect and sometimes some tweaking needs to be done for the individual device. I believe that a lot of the database was actually entered from us the users. And that's how the database was built. There are a lot of devices that are not standard and have to specially entered.

I don't think you will have to go that far, it would be a bummer to program every key individually. I think 99% of the time, it just takes adjusting the time and delays and for the inputs the way the remote originally switched to inputs.

In my particular case, my TV remote only has one button for video input switching (labeled 'Source') and it turns out that the database had a direct button for each individual source or video input selections. However, one or two entries in the database did not work. Example, I have a two port HDMI TV. I am using both ports. The database gave me a choice of 'HDMI 1', 'HDMI 2' and then later I found a choice of 'HDMI 2 version2'. I couldn't get the activity to switch to the orginal HDMI 2 source and then I realized that there was the other choice 'HDMI 2 version2' that worked and the 'HDMI2' did not. And all worked after that properly.

So go into the device itself and look at all the buttons it has in the database. That's done thru 'Button Behavior'.

Ok I've done enough rambling and hopefully I've steared you in the right direction to fix the problem, and I'm sure others with make suggestions and maybe less wordage.

Thank you Rob for taking time to explain it to me. I am not at home rigth now as well. I will check where I can adjust timing settings. Hopefully it will take care about volume thing.
Now, when I see that input 5 choosen for my TV, I am going to Help and redirect it to TV input. Next time when I choose Watch DVD it stays on TV input, so I go to Help button again and switch it to Input 5 for DVD. So, I do it manually, and I know I assigned TV input for TV and Input 5 for DVD during programing.
Unfortunatly I feel some frustration right now. May be I need a little more time to read forum and play with SW.
Thanks again and Mary Christmas

 Hi. Just purchased the 720 yesterday and so far I LOVE it. I have 2 questions that I simply can't figure out:

1. I have X10 light control using the Powerhouse SS13A Remote Wall Switch with the Powerhouse TM751 Controller. I tried to get my 720 to act as the SS13A, but it won't. When I try to have the remote learn the SS13A controls, it doesn't respond. When I use SS13A by itself, it turns the lights on and off no problem. I've also tried setting the 720 up as the TM751 controller and that doesn't work either...please help!!!

2. When I choose TIVO as my device, it shows these worthless controls on the first page of the LCD screen and the TIVO button (very useful) control on the 6th page. I want to remove or at least move the worthless controls to Page 6 and move controls I always use, like the TIVO button, to Page 1 on the LCD screen...

Thank you and Happy Holidays!

2. Select your activity, select "Change button behavior", scroll all the way down to section "Custom button label", rearrange soft buttons any way you like, even get rid of some.
1. X10 probably uses RF(Z-wave) and 720 can't handle them, only IR. To be able to do that you need to step up to 880 at least. But I don't know particular models to be sure.

The X10 as the other person said, is IR only, I have a Radio Shack IR interface controller X10 and it does work, but I guess the 720 doesn't do the RF stuff. But it works great!

Also correct use button behavior to rearrange the buttons on the LCD screen. But be aware, that for some reason Harmony software likes to keep the buttons together with the devices and if the first device in the list page is the TV, then from what I am getting, the TV buttons are listed first. I haven't been able to shove a little used button on the last page if it's part of the first device, it somehow groups them together.

I haven't play too much to fix it in my situation but that's what I seem to be getting myself.

Well, after much trial and error, I found how to do this.
I had to lie (twice) to the 720 to get it to work.
The key was that it would 'manually switch inputs when I was in the 'Device - TV' screen, with a 'single' soft button push when the screen was rotated to display inputs that activated my TV's inputs (i.e. InputAntA, Input1, InputComp1, InputComp2, etc.).
To make it work I lied in the step that asks how my TV switches inputs, and instead of selecting the third choice (which requires three button pushes like my TV does) I selected the second choice.
Then, I lied again when it asked if I had the original remote. I selected 'No, but I know the controls', which has a drop down menu that had text that matches the single soft button entries (above) that switched the inputs when I was in the Device - TV screen.
I just made a note of what the soft button's text was that made the proper input switch for each input I use on my TV, and then for each of those inputs I used the matching text in the aforementioned dropdown window, instead of using my original remote to train the 720.
It works fine now.
I shouldn't have had to do this, and it should have learned the inputs from my original remote, but to be honest I prefer this way as I don't have to worry about getting the inputs out of sync, like I would have had the 720 worked as it is supposed to, and programmed up with the third option for three button input switching.
BTW: Merry Christmas folks, I hope you and your family are having a GREAT day!!!

One of solutions: in your activity you can add commands to be executed at the start of the activity - add proper command to switch to 6in.

OK,guys, either I stupid  or 720 is need some tweakes that impossible to find without documentation or a lot of trials.
I reprogrammed it about 10+ times.
I changed timing on my Marantz reseiver and it works fine.
However I still have an issue with TV inputs.
My TV has : TV, Input1,Input2.....Input5.
So,I programmed Remote to switch to TV Input when watch TV activity is choosen.
I assigned Input 5 for DVD, where is my DVD connected to HDMI input.
I run full check after programming and it looks OK.
Whenever I turn TV ON it's staying on Input 2 or 4. It's never going to correct Input: TV for TV and Input 5 for DVD.
I tried to change some timing for TV, but that's all just guessing. I don't know what numbers I should enter (I even not sure if it's timing issue).
Unfortunatly, I don't see documentation for 720 (just 880). May be they are similar, but I can't find answer on my issue.Help on line doesn't help me either.
I may try call Logitech tomorrow. We'll see how this going.

One more question: I Have one button on my TV remote "View mode" that switch between Stretch,Smart Strech, Dot by Dot and Side bar" modes. How can I assign one of the buttons on the 720 to do it with one push?
Thanks,Sergey

Sergy,

I had a similar problem. Logitech support was very helpful in resolving the issue (although not all the friendly when asked to explain the changes made).

(1) Bring up the software and select "Troubleshoot" from the button on the top of the screen.

(2) Select your TV device, and Next

For me remote Help never gave me the option to fix the input selection error (is just asked if the input was correct, with no "No" option"), so...

(3) Select "No - the Help button on the remote does not fix the problem.", and Next

A screen will now be displayed that shows the names of the inputs and how they are mapped. For me the names were correct (I actually had to update them manually), but it showed nothing was mapped to them in the "The remote will select inputs this way:" section. I'm still confused by all of this as I went through a similar dialog when I taught the software/remote the codes. If I go to the device on the remote, all the "Lable Buttons" send the correct codes. When I asked the Logitech support person to explain this, he basically ended the call (based on the hold time, I'm sure he had lots of calls queued up).
Anyway....

(4) Select "Input Settings ", and Next

(5) Keep selecting Next and accepting the defaults for the power stuff.

The next section is how I got my inputs to work. It may be different for you depending on how you select inputs on your remote, I will outline my selections....

(6) Select 'I go directly to the input...", and Next

(7) Check the Input names (fix if needed, mine were fine), and Next

The rest is from memory as I don't have the remote plugged in (and the software wants it). I mapped the input names to the correct key. I originally taught the software by selecting the "I have the original remote and know what button to press." as I did not see the Input for the PC. It was in this pulldown menu (and perhaps the other... just not sure). Anyway... if the key is in the pulldown menu, I would select the "I don't have the original remote, but I know the commands that are used:" option.

"Update the Remote" and hopefully things will work for you.

Good luck.

This is my 2nd 720 (both purchased at costco) that is experiencing the same problem. The unit sets up and initially charges with no problem the battery indicator lights blink during the initial charge. When the battery indicator shows only 2 of 3 bars and I put the unit in the cradle it does not charge, even after leaving in the cradle all night. I have made sure that the unit is in the cradle (it beeps), the slide show appears and the battery level indicates 3 bars, although it does not blink the 3rd bar to indicate it is charging. I have tried taking the battery out and letting it reset.

I returned the first unit and got this one and I am experiencing the same problem with the second unit. I searched the forum and found no reference. It can't be the same batch of bad remotes because the first one had the functions labeled under the keys and the second did not.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and does anyone have a solution?

It's about 4 mins to switch with broadband access. As Lucky13MN mentioned you just need to have two accounts with Logitech, which is free anyway and they don't mind.

When you move between homes, simply log in to the Logitech site using the appropriate name and update your remote -- it will magically show only the programming for that location.

I have a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 DVR. I'd like my button setup as follows

Favorite Channels A
B
List C
I've noticed that the "Favorite Channels" item adds itself automatically, which is OK. There are two problems:

1. I can't seem to figure out how to have a blank button
2. "Favorite Channels" doesn't push all the buttons forward, it simply replaces the first one, and sends it to the end.

My screen ends up like this:

Favorite Channels List
B C

Any suggestions? Thanks!

If you click on that yellow "More Help" button in the top-right corner, it brings up a "Harmony Online Help" window. Clicking on the "Manual" tab starts a download of the manual in PDF format.

Interestingly, while the file name is "720_UserManual.pdf", the contents of the file are the manual for the Harmony 880. Guess that should tell us something :)

I have a problem getting the favorite channel buttons to work correctly .

The channels will change correctly if I input the channels from the number buttons on the 720. ex pressing 59 will switch to channel 59.

But when I try to use the favorite channel buttons the signal sent always start with a zero ie if channel 59 , it will send 059 resulting in an error and the channel is actually switched to ch 5 .

BTW , I have set all the channel favorite channels to 2 digit numbers but it still tries to send 0 as the first digit.

It works for channels single digit channels

Is there a way to solve this problem?

But for folks who might be interested, the large selection of "favorite channel" icons that are discussed at length in the Harmony 880 discussion threads work just fine on the 720.
I just spent Hours loading all my favorites just right but when i loaded them it made the Fav selection screen 4 lines instead of 3 to match the selection buttons. Now I can not select quite a few of them and can not figure out what I did wrong, or how to reset everything and try to start over. Can someone help me here?

I've had my 720 for about 5 months and the battery has never been an issue. I usually get 5-7 days between charges with heavy usage from the kids.

I'm on my second 720 from Costco. The first one would not charge or even see the battery!
Got the 2nd one yesterday and the battery is seen and charged up! Did some initial testing and it works real nice! Just trying to figure out how I can have my Panny DVD s97 listed as a DVD audio player as well as DVD video player. I play MLP and DVD-audio discs from time to time but I can't get the 720 to recognize that the DVD player can do this too! I'm sure it can be set up that way as another activity.

Rename "CD" to "DVD Audio" if you wish and it fits on the LCD display ...

Tks

I have found the screen to change the nuber of digit to 2. Now everything works. I wish there was some kind of Tree to help find the proper screens to make changes.

The 720 will not be discontinued anytime soon. It is one of Logitech's newest remotes. It is being sold by limited retailers right now (Walmart, Costco and Target). It's a great remote, I would not worry about it.

For a one year newer than the 880 Logitech item, the 720 is very difficult to find. Discontinued at Walmart, not available at CostCo website, a few at Target stores at list price. There are a some on eBay, but no good deals. Right now you can get a much lower cost for a new 880. Obviously Logitech is not pushing sales of the 720. I suspect that they are trying to clear out the inventory of 880's before releasing the next new remote based upon an upgraded (features and price) 720 based item.

The easiest thing to do is have to set up two different accounts with the online Logitech configurator. Name one "Maine" and the other one "Florida" (or whatever) to make them easy to tell apart.

When you move between homes, simply log in to the Logitech site using the appropriate name and update your remote -- it will magically show only the programming for that location.

I must have missed something. I've successfully configured the 720 for my present location. :) I didn't see an option for naming this configuration (account?).

Do I need to set up a second user ID and password for my second configuration?

Yes, you will need to set up another account.
I agree using a user name that is applicable to the set-up you are doing as earlier suggested by Ladd.
There is an option for doing this in the Remote menu of the software.

Thanks for the reply, Flyer.

That looks like an issue that's in need of improvement. When I move next week, the only item in my system that changes is my PVR. As I understand it, I'll have to sign on, establish another user ID and password, then do another complete configuration of all my components. True?

If true, it seems that Logitech should have a "save-as" option to allow each account to save more than one configuration.

Ok I have a few questions on setting up custom activities. When I select a new activity from the list that best matches the description of what I want to do it adds devices that I don't want to use and cannot remove. When I create an custom activity by selecting the utility option I can't add an Icon.

Whats the best way to create and activity that will allow full configuration yet allow you to add an Icon? Am I missing something or is it just not possible?

Also when I using the favorite channel Icons the input of the channel numbers takes a really long time is there any way of speeding this up?

This makes it so i can not use the bottome two of each. Has ANYONE solved this issue? It is obvious it is using the alignment code fomr the 880 (4 buttons) but there has to be a way to fix it :)

That 720 is hard to find but I don't necessarily think that it's on the way out. I certainly hope that they don't base future models on the 880. I used an 880 for 6 months and it was a piece of crap (charging issues, buttons sticking, etc). I'm loving the 720 and my wife also thinks it's a big upgrade.

If you literally have only one difference (the PVR) between locations and everything else is identical, you could just create a "Watch PVR2" activity and then simply move it to the front (top) of the activity list (via the online configurator) when you are at the location that uses PVR2 and six months later move it to the end (bottom) of the activities list when you change locations.

The PVR2 activity would always be in the scrolling list of Activities, but if it is at the end it might be sufficiently out of the way when not needed as to not be annoying.

If you do not have identical setups at both locations, this won't work. Better to have two different accounts that can each be tweaked individually. And setting up the second account will go much faster as you now know what to do.

[/B]IR Light Control

I just installed a Lutron Maestro IR-Remote dimmer model MIR-ITFS I got from Home Depot. My Harmony 720 recognized it and set it up as a device. I can use it under "Devices" to control the lights but whould like to use it with my DVD player and PVR . I would like to have the lights to come on when I hit "Pause" and go back out when I hit "Play". I was on the phone for over an hour this morning updating the remote with new thing they said to try. I was finally told that the only way I can do this would be to give up the "Pause" and "Record" function on my PVR and DVD because I couldn't use the same remote button to control 2 separate commands. Is there a way to do this? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Louis

You can, easily...

Under activities menu click on 'customize buttons' and scroll down to play, etc... and go over to the dimmer and select what you want each to do.

Update remote:
Done

The only thing you may want to modify is which devices use the dimmer, (TV, DVD, PVR, etc). That can be done under the setup of the dimmer device itself.

For example, we want the play, stop, pause to work when watching a DVD but not Cable, so I didn't check it as a device that uses the dimmer.

Thanks! That worked great. I use the website menu and had been at that setting but couldn't remember how to get back to it.

Now if I could only get my Panasonic TV (PT-60LCX64) to always come up in the correct input mode when I select a different activity. ( For my TV I keep hitting the "TV/Video" button. It doesn't use a menu.) I notice that on the remote under "Devices" "TV" three of my inputs are listed: Input AntA, Component1, and Video1 but the HDMI input for my PVR (MyHd Mdp-130 tuner card) isn't listed. I read somewhere on here that for best results I should always use the listed inputs but I didn't understand how to do that. Any help on this will also be greatly appreciated.

When you select Device (on the remote) and then TV, you will see some inputs that may not agree with your TV's named inputs, but that might change the TV's inputs if you select them.
Use the right/left arrows to see all the soft button assigned actions, and see if one changes your TV to HDMI.
If you find one that changes the input to the HDMI, that is what you should name the input that you want to use when setting up the activity that uses the HDMI input.
It may call it InputExternal"X" or something like that.

Thanks. None of my inputs made it go to HDMI but now that I've added another device it always selects the correct input.

I'm trying to "Set up favorite channels" which are all HD. I've tried using a dot (.) as well as a dash (-) and when I try to " Update my remote" I get the error message "The IR sequence '-' for your TV does not exist" or "The IR sequence '.' for your TV does not exist. Try learning the - again for your TV. How do I program my remote to recognize this?

Same here. I've been checking my local Wal-Mart since you can't get them on the web site anymore. My local WM carries the 520 and that's all I've ever seen there. Today while shopping I strolled past the remotes and there it was--the Harmony bastard child--sitting on the peg for the 520s, in front of the 520s and also the only one. No price on it. I ask the stock kid if he can remove the security hook so I can look at it. There's a 520 sitting up on top loose and he just grabs that and says, "here you go." I'm like, no I want that one. I don't think he realized (or cared) it was a different model. I price scanned it and it came up $159.00 so into the cart it went. I can't wait to set this up. Retiring my old MX-1000 will be sad for sure, but it's all in the name of progress.

Good luck.

fredtwd, I appriciate your help. I tried to follow your advice and I still have a problem with inputs.
The problem is when I choose to watch DVD all devices turning ON fine and TV is on Input 5 where is my DVD connected. Whenever I choose watch TV, TV stays in Input 5 forever. Help button doesn't help.
Now, about "helpful" Logitech support.
I spent 1 hour 20 min with them on phone last week. Person I spoke to tried to reconfigure my remote twice and asked me to test it. I didn't see any changes after her tweaks. She put me on hold twice for about 10 min each time to get advice from co-worker and they still dind't have solution. Finally, she gave me Accident Number and told me that Tier 2 Technician will call me in 1 bussiness day or even in the same day.
I was waiting for 2 days - NOBODY CONTACTED ME.
I reaaly suggesting to return this remote, despite I like it.

This is just my unlucky story (so far).

FWIW:
Logitech bought the company that makes the Harmony remotes last year (or the year before). Tier Two are the folks at the company that actually design and make the remotes and they really know their stuff.

Right after Christmas is their absolutely busiest time of the year, so even though it is annoying, one has to be extra patient. Call Logitech back on Monday, give them your incident number and politely remind them that you are due a call from Level 2. When you get the call, you will be in good hands.

Sergey,
If you If you can go to "Device" "TV" and then select a soft button that changes the input of your TV to what you want, then you 'will' be able to program the 720 to do it as you want, by lying to the software, and programming the 720 as follows.
The key is not programming it as the software instructs you to, and not using your original remote to program it at all.
For some reason the software is buggy and doesn't work as it should, so you have to be creative.
Once again, you first must to be able to switch inputs using the soft buttons on the 720 when in "Device TV", if you can't do that then this procedure will not work for you.
If you 'can' switch inputs when in the Device TV mode by using the "soft buttons" then you need to write down what that "soft button" selection was. (i.e. InputInput1, InputComp1, InputAntA, etc) and what it switched to (i.e. your DVD player, your XBox, your OTA ant, etc).
Be sure to scroll through the soft button screens using the right/left arrow keys on the 720 to see/try all the selections for inputs.
Then start the "trouble shooting" for the Device TV from the main page of the software.
Answer the questions saying that your TV never goes to the correct input, and keep answering normally until you get to the page that has "What would you like to correct about this device's inputs" then click on the selection that says "Input settings" the middle option.
Keep answering the questions and you will get to the page that says "How do you change inputs for your TV using the original remote".
The natural selection for a TV that needs a button press to open a menu with the inputs, then another button to move a cursor over the correct input or to hi-light the input, then a final button press to actually select the input, is actually option three of the software, but Do NOT select that option.
Instead use option two "I go directly to the input I want".
On the next page clear all the blocks of all the "Input Names" and then enter only the inputs names that earlier worked in the "Device TV" menu on the 720, and then select next.
Then you will see the page that says "What commands do you use to get your device to go to this input".
Select "I don't have the original remote, but know the commands".
Then using the drop-down list, select the text that exactly matches the text you entered on the previous page.
Hit Next.
Repeat for every input you have.
Finish the procedure as normal and update your 720.
It will now make the proper input changes.
This is actually a better way to program the 720 when you have a TV that needs 3 button presses to select an input, as it doesn't mater if your inputs get out of sync because it bypasses the 3 button method in favor of a single button press.
You 'do' need to verify you 'can' do that under "Device TV" on the 720 first, and be sure to write down what text makes your TV go to what input, so you have that ready when you need it.

Finally got around to setting up my 720 and I love it!! I'll miss my trusty old MX-1000 with its huge vol/ch/transport buttons and touch screen but the 720's ease-of-use makes it mother-in-law/wife/parent friendly. I'm really going to enjoy using this.

So here's a strange one. I get it all set up and everything works fine except one command on one device. I have a Comcast DVR (Motorola DCT-6412) and from another thread in the HDTV section I programmed the absent-on-the-remote-but-exists-in-the-codes command for 'Swap Tuners' to a button. So now when I press 'TV/VCR' on my Comcast remote it switches which tuner is displayed on the TV (a very handy and often-used feature). I was successfully able to 'teach' this new command to my MX-1000 without incident and it works fine with that remote as well. But I cannot get the 720 to execute this command. I first tried using every listed command for the 6412 (in case it was mislabeled)--no dice. I then tried to teach the 720 by using the Comcast remote--still nothing. I then tried to teach the 720 by using my MX-1000 remote--still nothing. I even tried the RAW mode and still nothing. When I press the button, I can see the little IR acknowledgement LED barely flicker, but it obviously doesn't send the command. It acts like it is sending out too short of an IR command or something. Anyone run into something like this?

I also noticed it was gone from Costco. Ebay only has a few. What is going on with the remote? Was there another recall or something. I was really excited about getting this remote. I have been researching for about 3-4 months now. I had originally planned on buying it back in Oct. but that was when they were pulled for the text coming off. I was just wondering if anyone knew anything.

I was assured that it was not, that it was their newest remote and would soon be listed on the website, etc.

Have had my 720 for about a week now. Great Remote, first Harmony I've ever had.
I am having a slight problem though.

When I hit the my Watch DVR button, everything comes on fine. But when I hit the MY DVR button( one of the side buttons, next to the LED screen) It shows the MY DVR Recording on the screen, but then right after it changes the input of my TV. What is causing this problem ? Is there a way to fix it so that it does not change the input on the TV ? What are buttons located on the sides of the LCD screen called ?

My DVR is a Motorola 6412 box

My TV is a Sony SXRD KDS55A200

When I hit the my Watch DVR button, everything comes on fine. But when I hit the MY DVR button( one of the side buttons, next to the LED screen) It shows the MY DVR Recording on the screen, but then right after it changes the input of my TV. What is causing this problem ? Is there a way to fix it so that it does not change the input on the TV ? What are buttons located on the sides of the LCD screen called ?Are you on the main screen or the activity screen when the behavior occurs? For people to help you, you must be very specific.

Double-check your Activity settings (Activities tab) in the Harmony software.

I just purchased this remote blindly at costco today. Does anyone know if it will operate my Xbox 360? Or do I have to buy the 360 model? I use my 360 for movies and games. I really like the features of the rechargeable batteries and color screen. If it does not work does any other model work besides the 360 one?
thanks

I'm in the main screen............One of the hard buttons says MY DVR. So when I hit the MY DVR button , It does pull up the MY DVR screen on the TV, then right after it changes the Video Input of my TV, it goes to Video input 2 ? I have my DVR set to video 5,on the TV. I have my PS2 hooked up to video 2.

The 720 should work w/ your Xbox360.

Open the Harmony software. On the Activities tab, click "Settings" under My DVR. Choose Review the settings for this Activity. Review those and make sure the correct input is set.

After you do that, click "Settings" under my DVR" again and choose "Change the behavior of buttons." Make sure the buttons on the remote point to the appropriate functions on the DVR.

Thanks, I'll try that when I get a chance. Let ya know how it turns out. Like I said , it's a great remote. That's the only problem I've had with it. Is the MY DVR function changing my TV input.

Forgot to mention that I'm using software version V5 5.3.2.6

Lately I've been updating it using the Logitech members site.

dabig,

You might want to upgrade to the Harmony v7 software. It simplifies setup.

You can download it here (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/downloads/software/US/EN,CRID=2109,contentid=12126).

Well, I have a 720 and thus far I'm not that impressed. I honestly thought these things were much more customizable than this. Sure, it works everything, but setting it up how I want it to look for operation is a royal pain in the ass. Why didn't the use a drag and drop type of software for button placement?!?!? You know, a little picture of the screen in the software with a button pool next to it so you could just drag the function you want and drop it on the button in the remote. That would have been so much EASIER than having to scroll through and figure out what function needs to be assigned to what button so that it shows up on the LCD where I want it. For example, I have an SA8300HD and need the A,B,C buttons. Well, I'm a righty so I want them all on the right side of the remote. However, if I have favorites assigned, I'm SOL because the favorites button always replaces the first button and shifts the entire setting around so now I have to scroll through 3 menu screens to use the A key. Also, if I want to add/change/remove a command I have to redo the ENTIRE layout because it always just adds the command to the bottom of the list. Customization is excruciating on this thing. Also, I thought I could assign icons to buttons, so I could match it up with the OEM remote and onscreen counterparts. You know, put an icon of the yellow A in the triangle, B in the blue square, C in the red circle. It would make it jump out and be easier for the others (kids, wife) to navigate. Can't do that either. Only icons for channels/favorites. I'm seriously considering returning this because for $200 it doesn't do near what I thought or expected it would. Is anyone else having these issues or am I doing something wrong? Any feedback would be appreciated.

When I had Comcast, I had A, B, and C buttons on the right side of the remote, so you can certainly do that. It does take a little trial and error the first time you use the remote to get the labels in the order you want, but after that, it shouldn't be a problem. Make sure you are using the latest version of the Harmony software linked above, and not the older version bundled with the remote.

The Logitech Harmony line is actually a budget option, when you consider the cost of the competition.

At $200, you did overpay a bit, though. They go for $130-$160 on Ebay.

I tried for over an hour last night and the only way to do that is to remove the favorites for the screen. When I go to devices the buttons are right where I want them, when I go to activities they get bumped. The favorites button always replaces the first button and even when I set up the buttons where they should show the way I want, they don't because the software over rides my settings and always puts the cable buttons in a certain order. I am running the 7.2.0 software off the web based settings. My major feeling is that this is a great idea, but it can be implemented so much better. The UI of the setup is total crap. I may return it and look at a cheaper version that can do the same thing. The only plus to having this model is the LCD screen allows me to put channel icons for digital music so I can select channels without having to run my In72 and the fact that its rechargeable. I thought about trying an 880 because it would give me 2 additional LCD buttons, but I may run into the same issues. I may play with it a bit more, but overall I am not pleased with it. I got this because it was touted as being easy and it's far from it.

Hi,

As I was setting up my activities in Harmony 720, I renamed the TV inputs from Input 1, Input 2, Input 3, PC Input to Input1, DVD2, CATV3, PCInput. I had previously customized their names in my TV from the standard names to the same custom names. However, under "learn the command" page in the software (or web site), at the very bottom of the page (under "Other Commands") I now have two sets of names listed for the same input. For example, I have Input 1 and Input1 listed; Input 2 and DVD2, Input 3 and CATV3, PC Input and PCInput. This would not be a problem except that I have noticed that when I press the "Devices" button on the Harmony 720 and choose TV, I now see two sets of names listed for every input on my TV. I consider this a major inconvenience, and for the life of me I cannot figure out how to remove redundant names of the same inputs from the Harmony 720 or from the Harmony software. On the "learn a command" page, I can select redundant names, but the only option available is to re-learn the commands for those names. There is no option to remove a command that was manually added to the list.

Can someone help me fix this?

Thanks!

The favorites button always replaces the first button and even when I set up the buttons where they should show the way I want, they don't because the software over rides my settings and always puts the cable buttons in a certain order.Aside from the top left, you can order the LCD buttons the way you want, but as you found, you can't simply use the order as it appears in setup, because the top left is offset for favorites. It only takes a minute or two to figure out, but here's a little help:

Label1 = page2, left top
Label2 = page1, right top
Label3 = page1, left middle
Label4 = page1, right middle
Label5 = page1, left bottom
Label6 = page1, right bottom

Usability is a relative term. I think the remote is simple to use, once setup. I also found it simple to setup and configure activities. You are certainly correct that extra tweaking -- such as the order of different labels on the LCD -- isn't nearly as intuitive. In the previous example, you've got to to look at where the labels are on the setup software and compare them to where they actually show up on the screen -- that's not intuitive, but it's not rocket science either.

I consider this a major inconvenience, and for the life of me I cannot figure out how to remove redundant names of the same inputs from the Harmony 720 or from the Harmony software. On the "learn a command" page, I can select redundant names, but the only option available is to re-learn the commands for those names. There is no option to remove a command that was manually added to the list.Under the Devices tab on the 7.x software, click Settings and "Change the behavior of buttons" to edit what you see on the LCD.

I don't know how to remove copied and renamed IR functions. I've always used their device profiles, or in one case, created my own with my own labels. Perhaps remove the device from the Harmony software and re-add it so you get the defaults? Or if you want the functions labeled as you want, learn the entire device yourself, rather than trying to rename the IR functions on an existing device profile?

I guess I am not quite sure why you tried to create a copy of Input2 named DVD2, etc, when all you had to do was edit the label for Input2 on the LCD by going to Settings -> Change the Behavior of Buttons, either on the Activity tab or the Devices tab in the software.

I tried everything you suggested . Download latest version of Software to ver. 7. I went into DVR stettings & did everything you said & NO LUCK. It still does the same thing ?

I was wondering ,should I just reset everything to default & start all over again from scratch ?

When I went to activity settings this what it shows.............

Device l Status/Actions

Motorola DVR l Motorola DVR is On

Sony TV l Sony TV is on

DVR l DVR is set to Tuner

TV i TV is set to Video 5

Everything looks right, so why does my TV switch to Video 2, when I hit the MY DVR button ?

I have a question: After setting up all your devices how do you turn everything off at one time?

I set up my TV to turn on, AV unit to turn on and that works fine.... but I can't figure out how to turn everything off.

I thought that if you pressed "Watch TV" again everything would turn off.

Thanks, I'm new to this and I want to make it work.....

Log-in at members.harmonyremote.com

Go to "Support Center"

Choose "Reference'

Then "FAQ"

Choose "Images and Fovourites"

The first choice is "Where do I find..."

Continue from there.

This is done via the Activities section.

If you are using the online configurator, from the "main page" where all your devices and activities are located, find your Activities that use a TV tuner (Watch TV, Watch Cable DVR, etc.) and click the Setup Favorite Channels link. That's where you add your icons.

Well, now my 720 is not charging. This thing is turning out to be a real POS. I'm going to see if I can get me cable remote to work everything and then I'm returning this piece of junk. I love the concept of these remotes, but the implementation is horrible. I could have made these so much easier!

There are also several other options to customize the main menu text and icons. In the 7.x software, hit the Remote Settings tab. From there, you can change the background, slideshow pictures, and theme.

Since the Harmony doesn't do macros, it's not sending out multiple commands. The only thing I can think of is the command code transmitted for your PVR's "My DVR" function is either identical or very close to the command code for your TV's "Input" function and they are both responding to the same command. I find it hard to believe, but I guess it could happen. I believe you could increase the Inter-Device Delay on the TV to a higher amount to try and get it to 'ignore' the erroneous Input command.

"Custom label" is the text that you want to appear on the LCD screen...it doesn't make a label automatically.

Also, you want to be customizing the commands for the ACTIVITY, NOT the individual device...you should rarely(if ever) need to select an individual device.
On the web setup you do this under ACTIVITY -> CUSTOMIZE -> CHANGE BEHAVIOUR OF BUTTONS

Well, mine is going back to Target tomorrow. This thing has been nothing but a headache. Thing is, I like the remote. The layout is decent, though could have used a few more buttons. The major downer is the horrendous setup and overall problems getting to work right. It won't charge or keep time right. For the cost of these, they should be much, much easier to setup and customize.

Since the Harmony doesn't do macros, it's not sending out multiple commands.

Actually, the Harmony CAN send multiple commands for one button press, as long as the commands are for different devices. You can do this by selecting commands from more than one device column in the drop down boxes for a single button.

You can use this, for example, to make the DVD "Play" button send both a "Play" command to the DVD player, and a "Lights OFF" command to a lighting controller.

However I don't think this is causing dabig's problem. I think you may be on the right track with the commands of the 2 devices being very close. It might be worth learning the offending commands in RAW and see if that helps.

You can display just text -- that's one of the options. There are several themes with different icons for the main activity screen, but I don't know how to change/edit them. You can easily change the icons on the favorites. You can also change the pictures that the remote cycles through when the remote is sitting on its charge cradle.

However I don't think this is causing dabig's problem. I think you may be on the right track with the commands of the 2 devices being very close. It might be worth learning the offending commands in RAW and see if that helps. It's also possible the profile he is using was created by someone who customized their MyDVR screen to switch inputs. I would suggest deleting the device and readding it using a different profile in Harmony device setup, if there is one.
