Brosef22 05-28-06, 07:14 PM No LG fans out there? Kirwin 05-28-06, 09:19 PM No LG fans out there? Do a search on LG. You'll soon learn why the lack of fans. I tried their 42" LCD with a built in DVR. I really liked this product at first... but on the first panel the DVR wouldn't function with the cable card. Exchanged it for another, and it had a 1 pixel wide, blue vertical stripe down the center of the screen. After this experience with LG, I personally believe that their product is 'junk'. Brosef22 05-28-06, 09:29 PM Kirwin, Thanks for the reply. I wouldn't be to quick to say "junk" in regards to LG. After all they do make most of the "A" type panels for alot of the big manufacturers and that was just one TV. Although, I have done research on the 42" w/dvr and found that it was problematic. That's why I chose the 37LB1DA. Plus it fit better over my fireplace and it's pretty slick looking. I'm just trying to get a hold of someone that has this TV in case of potential problems and I want to know if the cablecard works well. Thanks again Kirwin 05-28-06, 09:44 PM Kirwin, Thanks for the reply. I wouldn't be to quick to say "junk" in regards to LG. You really need to visit a brick and mortar store and look closely at these panels. Your'e not going to be happy mounting this above the fireplace. This panel has a very limited viewing area 'off axis'. The panel's colors will wash out to a purple haze. 'On axis' horizontal viewing is good. 'On axis' vertical is very limited! You will hate this panel mounted above your fireplace because of the purple haze. All LG IPS panels are characteristic of performing in this manner. impetigo 05-28-06, 09:49 PM This panel has a very limited viewing area 'off axis'. I've been hearing this alot but from the LGs I've seen in the stores, as I am considering the 37LC2D, I really haven't appreciated that at all. Maybe I'm colorblind, I don't know, but I don't see this obvious "black to purple/blue" that some people have been claiming exist on all of them. Brosef22 05-28-06, 09:50 PM My choices are kind of limited. I only have 30.5 inches from mantle to ceiling to mount something in. I want the cable card so it's clean and I like the look of the LG. Is the purple that noticeable? it will be mounted on a tilt mount. It's on backorder so I have some time to play with it. I didn't notice it at first when I purchased the panel at a Best Buy store... probably due the bright lighting in the store. Under 'home' lighting and reduced lighting at night is when it becomes very apparent. If you stay within the panels sweet spot('on axis' horizontal)... the image is really quite excellent. Anywhere outside of the sweet spot the panel fails. Yes the purple is that noticeable... you really need to see it for yourself at a brick and mortar store. Another solution would be the Sony 40XBR1. It is cable card ready, which works very well. I have this panel... and there is no bad 'seat in the house'. Off axis / on axis the image is excellent. Dimension without stand is 40 x 27 x 4 7/8. Brosef22 05-28-06, 10:40 PM Kirwin, Do you know for a fact all LG LCD's do this or just the 42 w/DVR. I know cdr1000 has one and it seems like he likes it. Thanks Based on all LG lcd panels that I saw at Best Buy including the two defective 42" LG panels I owned... I noticed 'purple haze'. You really need to do a search on this forum, and go check out the various LG panels for yourself. It's no skin off my back that you get one of these panels... I was just trying to save you some of the hassle that I experienced. Good luck with whatever panel you purchase. Do people buy TVs without doing research? jedi29 05-29-06, 07:28 PM Hi Brosef22, I came across that LCD display on LG`s web-site , do you have it ? If so , would you please tell me more , like build quality , picture and sound quality. Also , how is the TV Guide function , I know that it takes about 2 days with the tv off to load the whole 8 days , but other than that , how is it ? Many thanks , also do you know where I can download the manual ? you can`t get from there US site. Good luck, hope to hear about it soon , thanks !! Gary :) Mkellyvich 05-29-06, 08:58 PM I have an LG 42LP1D and have been quite happy with it. It is mounted above the fireplace on a tilt mount. Kirwin is correct that the panel washes out when viewed from off-horizontal, but the tilt mount really takes care of the problem. The panel also washes out (to a lesser extent) when viewed from more than about 45 degrees left or right of centerline, but we don't generally sit outside of that cone so it hasn't bothered us. The panel has been very reliable over the year we've owned it, features are fine, and the picture is satisfactory. Hope this helps... Gary :) Hi Gary, I just bought this TV from Ultimate Electronics and it's currently on backorder. I am 1 of 4 people in the whole company waiting for it so I don't know when it'll be in they say a week or so. You are absolutely right the build quality is very good, LG manufactures one of the best panels you can buy (A-type LCD). Most companies use it because it is so 'heavy duty'. I hear the TV guide function works well but more to come on that. I found the manual here: [URL]http://www.lge.com/support/manual_gcsc.jsp Just put in the appropriate fields and it's that easy. Very informational. I don't know if you have read most of this thread but I had a conversation about the whole purplish haze thing. I did some research on this and it turns out after talking to the guys at BB, they found that using the Monster Cable TV Screen Cleaning Kit Model: TV CLNKT, it turned all of their Pioneer and LG LCD screens purple or kind of a rainbowish color. Without using the cleaning kit they had no problems. I think we are talking about human error not a panel that is "junk". I myself am only going to use the rag that comes with the TV to clean it, plus it'll be mounted so high no one will be able to touch it (kids). Enjoy Kirwin 05-30-06, 11:08 AM I don't know if you have read most of this thread but I had a conversation about the whole purplish haze thing. Brosef22 05-30-06, 11:30 AM This is absolute garbage/misinformation. I did not use any cleaning kit on either panel and 'purple haze' still occured on both LG panels. This is fact. This info came from the sales mgr. at BB. I asked if they noticed any kind of purple haze on any of their sets and he told me no not until they used that cleaning product. After using it they could not get rid of the haze so they pulled the sets. I wasn't implying that you used this method just some info for the people. Easy. jedi29 05-30-06, 02:19 PM Hi Brosef22, Thanks for the link for the manual , however it won`t work :( I have an older iMac and I click on the link and nothing happens. I have downloaded tons of manuals , but LG has always been a pian. I was able to download the sales sheet , but can`t do the manual. Very strange , thanks anyway. I also downloaded the sales sheet for there 42' plasma and noticed the plasma`s get a 2 yr warranty and the lcd`s 1 yr. , is that true? Anyway, thanks again , and best of luck and please let me know what it`s like when you receive it , thanks. Gary Brosef22 05-30-06, 02:46 PM Gary, Did you try accessing it through the LGE.com website? That's where I got it from after some navigating. Mkellyvich 05-30-06, 09:48 PM Brosef22, I've never used anything other than the supplied LG cleaning cloth on my panel, and never with any moisture other than that provided by some hot breath (grin) - your BB folks may be talking about a different condition than Kirwin and I. The blue/purple haze Kirwin and I are referring to is caused by the polarizing filters built into the panel - as you get off axis, they begin to block the backlight. Some LCD panel construction technologies are less susceptible to this effect - there was a primer in one of the recent Sound and Vision or Home Theater magazine issues that explained the differences between the various LCD technologies. Cheers, Mike jedi29 05-30-06, 10:00 PM Hi Brosef22, Finaly :) Yes I now have the manual , I had to use Netscape , ( IE for for some reason doesn`t work well with JAVA :( ) Anyway , I was able to have a closer look , on the sales sheet that I first dowloaded it mentioned that it had a "freeze" function , according to the manual it doesn`t. Not a really big issue , but a feature that I like . Even my Sony XS says no to a freeze feature and there is no freeze button on the remote that came with the set , it still has one !! I`m using my old XBR200 remote with a freeze button and it works albeit only a half screen , but still it works and there is no mention of it in the manual. Of course the XS955 , is just a rework of the old XS910 and the PDP did have a freeze button on the remote. Anyway , there is a place about 50 miles from "my town" that has one on display and has stock !! So maybe I`ll have a look at in person !!! I do like the TV Guide feature , a lot , since the paper version is the size of a "People" magazine :( , I like the smaller one , but that never really gave all the channel info. either. I tried a Toshiba before my XS and it had the TV Guide feature ( has well as freeze , but not made very good and had poor sound ) and it worked really well. Anyway , thanks again for providing the link , and please keep this thread going and if I have a chance to see the tv in person , I`ll post as well. ;) Take care, Gary jedi29 05-30-06, 10:08 PM Hey Guy`s , My 2 Cents On Screen Cleaning !! :) As posted above , I have a Sony XS PDP , and I use a very moist micro-fiber cloth to clean my screen and it has worked very well so far. No soap , just plain warm water. Of course if the screen is plastic [ ie: Toshiba ] then I have now idea what would work best. Have fun :D Gary Brosef22 05-30-06, 10:16 PM Brosef22, I've never used anything other than the supplied LG cleaning cloth on my panel, and never with any moisture other than that provided by some hot breath (grin) - your BB folks may be talking about a different condition than Kirwin and I. Cheers, Mike Mike, Thanks for the clairification makes it alot easier to understand. Much appriciated. I was just at BB and didn't notice it though. Kind of frustrating for me, but all in all I think this panel has alot to offer and is going to do great! Can I get that article online somewhere? I got a question: I have to chose bt the LG 42LP1 or the LG 50" plasma. I got same good price for both and have to chose one of them. What is your recomendation? My view distance is 7.5 feet and I guess I'll see standart tv signal 80% of the time. thx a lot and sorry for my english Mkellyvich 06-01-06, 02:56 AM Best bet is to spend as much time as you can looking at standard TV on each of the units before making your decision. My feeling (based on several years watching Dish Network SD TV on assorted CRT and LCD HDTVs) is that from close distances (under eight feet) the smaller sets look better as they don't exaggerate the flaws of the standard def signal. That said, there are times when I'm watching movies on the 42LP1D that I wish I had gone for a 50" panel - DVD generally looks good at either size. It all comes down to what you're going to watch and what your personal preferences are. Mike Kaerok 06-01-06, 11:49 AM 'On axis' vertical is very limited! You will hate this panel mounted above your fireplace because of the purple haze. All LG IPS panels are characteristic of performing in this manner. I am checking the 42LP1R TV, with S-IPS panel, is it the same panel than you refer in your post as IPS? or that "S" means a new panel improved? Well, I am living in Chile right now, so, perhaps the "R" just means another thing. Brosef22 06-01-06, 06:17 PM Kaerok, If you're having trouble deciding between LCD and Plasma you should check out this link http://www.hometheatermag.com/lcds/805lg/index.htm It's a great column on LG and could help you to determine which route to go. Enjoy. Kaerok 06-01-06, 07:06 PM Yeah, I alredyd readed that nice reviw, thx for the tip! But I cant decide yet. On one hand lcd is "bright" and "sharper" and on the other hand is "size" and better "angles". I want the screen hooked on my wall, and the bule/purple off axis issue can be a problem...but I have only 7.4 feet of viewing distance, 9.84 feet total (wall to wall). And I have a big window (all the right wall, 9.84 feet). So, I am not sure!!!!!! :( With all that data what is your personal election? Thx a lot!!! samit 06-03-06, 04:14 PM With the market flooded with 37/40 panel and price of expensive panels fallings $3K-$2K I am as confused as many of the others. Any comments on LG owners.. Brosef22 06-09-06, 01:26 PM They can't deliver it till Sat a.m. (tomorrow) so I will hook it up to my DVR box until I get it mounted and a cable card installed. The difference between box and cable card will also be noted. Thanks guys cdr1000 06-11-06, 06:52 PM So far, I can't find anything to complain about. High quality tuners. Very good sound. Brosef22 06-23-06, 02:32 PM Well I've had my TV mounted and operational for a couple of weeks now and it's amazing! First I gotta say I love the tv! Cable card works flawlessly and the HD content is breathtaking!! The TV guide is pissing me off a little bit though. All the channels are filled in and it's working as advertised but none of the channels are in order. I haven't called LG yet cause it doesn't bother me that much. Can anybody tell me whats wrong? The set has a manual channel placement option but I don't feel like going through 200+ channels and rearranging them manually. That is my only complaint. Other than that it's a beautiful TV and I couldn't be happier with it above the fireplace. There isn't a bad seat in the house and absolutely no on axis/off axis veiwing problems, no purplish tint, none of that. My son was watching Robots on HBO HD and it was amazing the picture was very impressive! Definitely a good movie to show off HD content. Anyone who is thinking about purchasing an LCD absolutely needs to go and compare this panel to samsung and even sony. You will be surprised. I was. TulsaCoker 06-23-06, 05:48 PM I agree, I was originally going to get the Hitachi 42" plasma but CC would not stock them anymore. Since this was going to be a bedroom TV I was leaning towards a 37" or 40" LCD. Comparing the Sony, Samsung and Sharp LCD's to the LG to me the LG looked just as good or better. Then to top it off the LG was considerable less and that sealed the deal. I have had the TV for over 3 weeks and can honestly say I have not regrets. Great TV. Brosef22, I have NEVER heard of a TVGuide(Gemstar) system putting the channels in the chronological order in which they appear on your channel lineup. I think they may put them in the order of LOGO(alphabetically). Meaning first in ABC, then BBC, CBS, etc... You must do this manually. And yes, it does take a while, but after it is done once, you don't have to do it again. Some tips for those with the TVGuide menu system: 1. Try to keep the channels you want info on down to about 50 or less. Do this by turning off all the channels whose guide info you could care less about. Trust me, whether you have analog/digital cable, you will turn off a majority of the channels. Keep those channels which you watch the most filled with Guide info, and turn the others off. This is done in the SETUP part of the TVGuide menu. 2. Now I know you can do this on the LG 32LX1D, but other LG LCD's I don't know. Alot of people complain that everytime you turn on the TV, the TVGuide menu is the first thing you see, and people find this very annoying. Well, you CAN turn this off in the SETUP portion of the TVGuide menu. Set the TVGUIDE/Auto portion of the set-up menu to OFF instead of ON, and this will stop the TVGuide being the first thing you see when you turn the set on, and then having to exit out of it. You will only enter the TVGuide section by pressing the TVGuide button on the remote. I have done just this with my Sony HX-900 DVD recorder. It use to do this all the time, until I realized you can turn that feature off in the Set-up portion of the TVGuide menu. YES you can see from off axis a purple pixeleted black taint but it has to be from a 60-90 degree off center to see that. Me I decided not to offer in my living room such a viewing axis to any of my guests. I'd rather sit in front of the tv, in front of my guestsn ;) BIG turn off for that series was NO PIP or POP with the 32" set I had and computer resolution was inferior to an ACER AT3705 1080P I had for 3 months. I have no Blueray player at home BUT I believe I no longer need to buy an $$ 1080P TV set to get a jaw dropping picture. An LG 1366x768 will do it for me. I'am now looking to get a bargain LG 37LB1DA or bigger that offers PIP and POP. That will likely be my next purchase. A default 2 year coverage by LG in Canada says alot about their product. For me, move over SONY, I'am an LG fan for now... NO plasma for me, they are still burn in issues though it has vastly improved but if you are like me using your TV as a PC monitor then the burn-in issue sooner or later will arise (taskbar inprint on screen), no matter how good the prevent burn-in technology it has incorporated! |
