bruce24 01-03-08, 12:11 PM Have you had a situation where programs are recording late? I have had situations where a recording started between 11-20 minutes late even though it looked fine in the guide.
My scheduled recordings, have so far, all started and ended on time.

I have not experienced that problem. I have had recording issues where it would start recording the program and stop after 30 seconds. It happens far and few inbetween. But with the network shows going off due to the writer's strike, not too much on tv for me to record with season pass. No problems with suggestions.
petelang 01-03-08, 02:21 PM DCT 3412A. No problems with the Celtics game on CSN 881 last night.
So there must be a bug with the DCH boxes then if you have DD via Optical on the DCT.

mike12806 01-03-08, 05:02 PM Hi all,
Just had the tivo upgrade done today on my DCH3416 and I have a slight problem. I have some SD recordings that have "ported" over from the regular comcast DVR, and when I try to start them while watching a HD channel, I get a blank screen with sound. I cannot seem to do anything at this point except unplug and reboot the box. VERY ANNOYING!!! I think it has something to do with the box going from 1080i to 480p, as I have it set in 1080i hybrid. If i leave it in 1080i or 720p fixed, I get SD programming with annoying letterboxes. Can anyone help me??

Fixed it myself...unplugged the box and plugged it back in...and while it was booting up...i shut it off and immediately hit menu and set the aspect ration to 1080i and stretch. Once the box is booted, you cannot get into this menu.

It's not just Optical... HDMI doesn't work as well.
petelang 01-03-08, 08:12 PM It's not just Optical... HDMI doesn't work as well.
Right DCH Boxes don't pass DD 5.1 (only PCM 2.0 Digital) via Coax, Optical, or HDMI. Rob has DD 5.1 from Optical on his DCT though so it has to be something with the DCH unless coax and HDMI don't work on the DCT boxes either.

How is your system connected? I have my optical cable going directly from the box to the receiver. TNT-HD coming in fine. Is your HDMI connecting going to your receiver?

Just to let you know you shouldn't have to unplug the box to get to this menu. The power button on the remote will not let you get into this menu because it won't turn box off anymore, but the power button on the front of the box should still work.

You can change the resolution in the menu with the TiVo software. You no longer have to go through that hidden menu anymore.

I have an HDMI cable going from my DCH cable box to my Onkyo 705 receiver and then an HDMI cable going from Onkyo 705 receiver to my TV. I also tried it with my old Onkyo 674 and same results (No Dolby Digital only Dolby Pro-Logic).
My last DVR box (I think it was a DCT 64??) worked fine with this setup and I would get Dolby Digital on any show that supported it.
I also hooked up a Monster optical cable from the box to my receiver and it also will not send out Dolby Digital.
I also know it is hooked up correct and why I think it's a software problem and not a hardware problem is because if I leave the box on an HD channel that should have Dolby Digital and then unplug the box and plug it back in, when the box is booting up, it will have Dolby Digital until I get the welcome (starting up) screen. I do not get Dolby Digital after the Tivo software starts up.
jmpage2 01-04-08, 01:01 AM Well, from my Tivo HD at least with cable cards, I get Digital Dolby on all channels and programs that support it over my toslink connection to a Denon receiver.

Then it sounds like a Tivo software issue within the DCH boxes. Maybe I'm lucky for being able to hold onto my old box. Has anyone called Comcast about this one yet?

I wionder if the HDMI to the AVR is what is causing problems.

Yes I'm expecting a call from Engineering today. If not I have the tech's cell number and he will escalate to his manager tomorrow AM. The Tech works Tuesday through Saturday.

alanronkin 01-04-08, 09:30 AM I think everyone has the DD problem. I called comcast and they are stumped about it. As for the handshake between 1080i and 480p they also know about that, but have not fixed it.

I have a Sony so I am not familiar with this handshake issue that are refering to or have seen it posted before. Please enlighten me.

Yes but when you use the Tivo software and try to use 720h it just makes my TV black screen. If you go into the secret menu and set 720p and 4:3 override to 480p it stretches the picture to fill your screen on the SD material. It actually works where the Tivo software just turns your TV into a brick.

I do believe they are somewhat seperate because I did have problems when I first had the box set up. I think the box defaulted to 480i and when I changed it on the Tivo screen, it did not work properly so I had to go into the hidden menu by the buttons on the front of the box. Once I changed it in the menu to 1080i/480i, I was all set. However, with that set up, if I am on an HD channel and I bring up the tivo menu, it changes to the square picture.
Recent problem I am seeing is when I am in the guide and I "exit" out, the picture still appears in the upper right corner and the rest of the screen is black. If I pull the guide back up and press the guide button to exit, its works. Anyone else see this?

I had this problem the other night, frustrating. Nothing would fix it until I went into a recorded program watched it for a few seconds and then exited.

That didn't work for me. I've known about guide on guide off for a black screen for 5 months. It started happening when I got the DCH3416 that was the only way to get out of the black screen. This time it just didn't work so the only way I got around it was to go to a Tivo Recording.

I'm not getting a total black screen. I go into the guide and the picture goes into the upper right corner. Regardless of what I do, when I hit "exit", the picture stays in the upper right and the guide disappears leaving it blank. When I press guide, the guide reappears on the screen. When I hit guide again, the picture comes back to full screen.

The DCH Boxes should have a button on the front of the box for resolution... if mine was set for 480p I would lose SD picture when switching from HD... if I switched it to 480i everything is fine.

Wow that's quite a bug, surprised that one wasn't caught.
Maybe if they would of scaled the guide on and off the screen like Passport on SA boxes, or like on DirecTV, not only would we have a nice visual effect, but when exiting the guide, the video in the upper right corner would scale and grow to fill the screen.
Disappear and reappear, thats so Windows 3.1. Why can SA and D* boxes do this? Is the Moto box just that much of a P.O.S. that it can't do that, yet alone run without lag? SA and D* boxes don't have so much lag, what gives? I hope the new Motorola DCX boxes fix all of these limitations.

alanronkin 01-05-08, 04:44 PM Ok, so now the thing won't turn on at all. I did a power cycle and now it only blinks with 4 8's or 1 one pixel. I am so close to just buying a new Tivo and the hell with this.

Technically, it is not supposed to turn off. Tivo design is to keep the box on at all times and keep the hard drive full. Not sure what happened when you power cycled but oops.
petelang 01-05-08, 05:55 PM Ok so DD 5.1 now works on the replaced DCT3416 via Optical and via Coax. I didn't bother testing HDMI. I tried right away to set a Season Pass and it balked so I figure it will work in a bit after it recovers.
720h now works perfectly and I don't have to run 720P fixed. So anyone having the DD 5.1 issue on the DCH341x should call comcast and have them swap out the box for a DCT3416. There should be no charge as it's a known issue and they broke the box when they didn't test the DCH's.
The only thing that sucks is I just checked and I have a DCT3412 and not a 3416 so I just lost 40GB of recordings. I'll call the tech and see when he can come and swap me out a 160 gig unit. This blows.
The other crappy thing is this box is laggy to hell. The IR window is very narrow compared to the DCH box.
AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHH

During the week it's ok to select the TiVo support option when you call Comcast. During the weekend you need to hit option 3 and within a minute or two you will get someone. I've spent 4+ hours on hold waiting for TiVo support on the weekend. On Monday when I call back it's less than a minute hold time.

markjrenna 01-06-08, 12:35 PM Thanks for posting version info. We can, over time, see how TiVo & Comcast are about issuing updates. The iGuide releases one maybe two updates per year. I certainly hope the TiVo folks release updates in a more timely fashion as they are needed.
petelang 01-06-08, 02:53 PM Well I have DD 5.1 and I can record again but there are no DCT3416's to be had right now. The tech will check the warehouse later this week to see if there are any. If you call and don't request a DCT they will just bring you a new DCH which won't give you DD 5.1 so make sure you request a DCT3416/2.
I gave the Tech the forum information and he should be passing it on to his boss so they are up to date with our issues.
At least Comcast is trying to rectify the issues and get us working. I really appreciate my tech really going out of the way to make sure I'm at least where I was before the TiVo upgrade.

But the guide is sticking to the last channel I used the guide to select. For example, if I select channel 52 and then decide to punch in channel 881 and then pull up the guide, it is back on chn 52.
Is Tivo available in West Roxbury yet?
FREAK!
It is supposed to be launching everywhere in Mass and NH today.
petelang 01-07-08, 07:55 AM Is Tivo available in West Roxbury yet?

Today is the big day when Comcast starts pushing out Tivo to the Boston area. So if you are in MA or NH and have Comcast you "should" be able to request TiVo. You'll need to request a DCT3416/DCT3412 if you want DD 5.1 on your HD channels and onDemand. If not you can use any of the DCH boxes.
alanronkin 01-07-08, 09:41 AM Don't get so excited... I would wait unless you want to be paying to be a beta tester.
petelang 01-07-08, 12:58 PM Some more issues this morning. Still can't record every season pass I could before. WTF is going on here?!?!?
I'm seriously thinking about going back to iGuide. At least it recorded what I wanted when I wanted it.
Oh and it looks like the DCH boxes also have the issue with the not being able to turn off the TiVo suggestion crap as it does shut off with the DCT box.
Pete
For those of you who have had the install, did Comcast charge you for the tech visit? I called today and they want to charge me $18 for the install (in Nashua, NH).
eddielives 01-07-08, 01:45 PM With all the bugs reportd here, I think I'm going to hold off on the Tivo interface. One major reason is that I do not want to give up DD and do not want to switch back to the DCT box in my living room. Although I must say that I'm running a DCT3416 box in the bedroom and have had none of the remote lagging issues posted here (knock on wood). The other reason is that I just don't think it's ready yet. I think alanronkin said it best that therob006, Bruce24, petelang etc. are more like beta testers than "the lucky ones" who got it first. I'm ususlly an early adopter, but this time I think I'm gonna wait.
On another note, did someone mention that the iGuide would be getting a makeover or at least another update?? If so, that would be another reason to hold off on the tivo. Finally, my wife and I are very farmiliar with the iGuide and ReplayTv (which I think are somewhat similar), so the learning curve (mostly for her) would be yet another issue, though a minor one.
just my $.02

Yes early adopters have to have a tech come out and visit. These are the reasons why.
1. They need to physically confirm you have an appropriate box.
2. If there is an issue (most DCH boxes have issues on the install) a tech needs to be there to call support
3. If you don't have an appropriate box you will be provided one (DCH3416 is what they are rolling out with)
4. Comcast loves to have more of your money.
Eventually it will be a fully automated thing but not until they have all the kinks out.

If the issues aren't resolved pretty quickly. I'm going to be asking for a downgrade back to the DCH3416 and iGuide software.

I've forgotten what the difference is between the 6412 and the 3416. I have a 6412 series III (with HDMI). What (if anything) would I lose by switching to the 3416?

The main differences are the size of the hard drive (160GB for the 3416 vs. 120GB for the 6412) and the absence of an analog tuner (64 series has one, 34 series doesn't). If you can switch, you shouldn't be losing anything, only gaining space.

No real differences just more space. Remember if you want DD 5.1 you need to have a DCT341x and not the DCH341x. DCH just looks nicer.

BSTNFAN 01-07-08, 04:51 PM In what is commonly referred to as a "noshi++er", I was reading this thread when the e-mail dinged and it was the Tivo availability notification I had signed up for from Comcast.
NortheasternPJ 01-07-08, 04:51 PM I just got notified that in Salem, MA the Tivo service is available. Sadly, after 18 months of waiting, I think I'm going to tell them to forget it for now. If the new iGuide doesn't fix what I need when it comes out in a few weeks I may consider it. It's pretty sad as I've read this thread probably daily for the last 2 years.
leogetz 01-07-08, 04:53 PM Just got this email...I live in Whitman MA...

hybucket 01-07-08, 05:04 PM I am on the lower Cape..I got the email as well.
I am thinking that I will wait. With all the problems, it hardly seems worth it.
y2thrasher 01-07-08, 05:06 PM Ditto on the notification e-mail. I'm in New Bedford (02745), but I also think I'm going to wait a couple weeks for the new iGuide.
Yep. I just got the email saying it's available here in Natick, MA too. But considering all the problems all you other folks are having I might as well wait for the bugs to be sorted out (especially the killer no 5.1DD bug).
Got the email today and set up the appointment for Friday. I realize there are problems but assume they will eventually be resolved. The software has to be better than current offerings. am in 02472
GiphLag 01-07-08, 05:24 PM Got the email from Comcast today as well. I'm in Waltham, MA.
Called Comcast right away, and they actually claim it's not available yet and refused to upgrade me, even though I told them that their website says it's available.
I think I'll stick with the iGuide for now, especially since you guys are saying there might be an update soon.
Is there a thread on this now legendary new iGuide?
Petey999 01-07-08, 05:47 PM It's sad, I was soooooo looking forward to getting the Tivo interface, but after hearing the issues people are experiencing (and especially the lack of the 30 second skip), I think I'm going to hold off for now. Great job Comcast.....
chrisgeleven 01-07-08, 06:17 PM Just got the e-mail for Manchester, NH. TiVO is available.
However, I am going to wait until the software is a little less buggy and doesn't require a $18 fee for someone to install it.
Striola 01-07-08, 06:27 PM Got the email today - Bedford, MA (01730). Install is on Jan 12.
Just got my email, too.
So the *ONLY* thing that's making me wonder whether to pull the trigger is that I have yet to hear from anybody whether firewire continues to work after the upgrade to TiVo.

I would be doubtful of this, but hey, great if true!
Expandable storage is where it is at for sure. I will upgrade my Tivo HD to 1TB when those drives get down to $149.

My first time posting. I have been covering this forum for months, and I am very interested in the comcast tivo service. Anyways I know Mass. and New Hampshire have a rollout, but I just thought it was weird to get an email telling me it was available in Philly. I will be calling tomorrow to find out.
P.S sorry about the graphics (the tivo guy, and text grids) not being on here I am still a rookie at this.
eddielives 01-07-08, 10:25 PM So I just got off the phone with a CSR, and was informed that I would have to have the tivo service installed on both my DVR boxes or none at all (currently running a DCH3416 and DCT3416). I know I said earlier that I was going to hold off, but I started thinking that I would try it out first on the bedroom box (DCT3416) and leave the livingroom (DCH3416) alone to start. Then, if it passed the WAF, and they fixed the DCH bugs (DD5.1... "on/off" for suggestions...the season pass issues... and loss of guide info.), I would have it installed in the livingroom. Based on the "all boxes or no boxes" offer, I told her that I would have to pass for now. She didn't seem too surprised.
On a more positive note, she did say that the service call was $14.95 not $18.
Oh yea. I wanted to thank therob006, bruce24, petelang and whoever else posted their experiences here. Your input has been of great value. I would seriously think about asking for the service call fee to be credited at very least. That was one of the first things I asked the CSR and she stated that I would have my account credited if this service did not perform as advertised. This was somewhat comforting as they have been very good about issuing me credit for problems.
Either way, thanks for the helpful information guys.:)
cypherstream 01-07-08, 10:28 PM Does the Comcast/Tivo interface have the animated guide info screens like a real Tivo?
As shown here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SUd4Xx7M3g
Even in this Amazon Unbox demo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFwdKa_nvAE&feature=related
The background is always moving in some sort, and the screen transition animation is pretty slick!
When you select something, the next page of information glides into view and the tivo guy at the top is animated.
Just wanted to clear up if the Motorola box is a p.o.s. like a 486 processor when a real Tivo is more like a pentium 3.
mtchamp 01-07-08, 11:07 PM I live in Aushnet MA 02743 and just called Comcast to order DVR service with TiVo. They charge 17.95 to install, but I asked for a waiver and I was given one. I currently have a TiVo HD with CC's and I just want to try it out and be a paying member of the Comcast TiVo club to see if there is anything there worth having over a TiVo HD. At $20.00 a month, it's certainly no bargain compared to a real TiVo, but I must play. I scheduled the install for next Monday, my day off.
petelang 01-07-08, 11:13 PM Well it seems my info was correct the e-mails are going out to all that wanted to know in advance.
Hopefully you don't have any bugs with your installs.

therob006 01-08-08, 07:18 AM For those of you who have had the install, did Comcast charge you for the tech visit? I called today and they want to charge me $18 for the install (in Nashua, NH).
Tech visit is $17.95 flat fee. It would be hard pressed to find any service professional that would come to your home for $17.95 for an hour. I believe Verizon and D* are around $80.

Part of me likes it, part of me wants to ditch it. For the extra $3 a month, I'll keep it around and see how it looks after the next upgrade.

It is available everywhere in Mass and NH where there is moto boxes. If you find someone saying no, call again.
I'm not sure if this might be a new bug or a problem with the Tribune guide but when I pull up the info, it is behind by about 12 to 24 hours. The guide is working fine, just the info banner at the top is wrong.
leogetz 01-08-08, 08:08 AM Does anyone know if you have 2 HD DVRs do you have to pay a monthly fee for both boxes or is the $3 a month a cover all boxes fee?
garberfc 01-08-08, 08:10 AM If the issues aren't resolved pretty quickly. I'm going to be asking for a downgrade back to the DCH3416 and iGuide software.
Don't do it! Don't go back to the Dark Side:eek:
It's true, it sounds like you folks are paying the price of being beta testers. I'm switching back from DTV to Comcast as soon as these kinks are smoothed out...

petelang 01-08-08, 08:25 AM Ok some more things I'm missing from iguide and dislikes about Tivo.
1. Reminder - I liked this as I would want to watch something live but maybe not record it
2. When I hit View Upcoming Episodes on the TiVo screen I get useless garbage that has absolutely nothing to do with the show I'm trying to find an upcoming episode on.
3. Guide data is erratic at best on TiVo. One minute it's there the next it's gone.
4. DCT is much slower than the DCH and is much more laggy with Tivo than with iGuide as far as menus go.
5. DCT IR window doesn't seem as wide as the DCH so I have to stretch to get commands to register
I'm sure there will be more to come.

Ill let everyone know how it goes tomorrow afternoon.

I've never had Tivo so I can only compare it to iGuide. I've rarely used reminders but I do agree with the guide data. I've used my friend's DCH but I cannot tell the difference between the two as far as processing speed. I do know the processer in DCH boxes are faster.
My dislikes are the erratic recording. Seems like Suggestive records are priority then season pass then one time scheduled and finally what you are currently watching. The box seems to act more like a single tuner then a dual tuner. Suggestive records are automaticly deleted whether you watch it or not which works for me. I have no way to select to record HD programs only or even make it my prefer recording. My likes are the suggestive recording which you really need to use thumbs up and thumbs down to control the content. I accidently thumbed up on a college football game and then the box went crazy recording anything associated with it. The search screen and the new VOD menu are great but a bit laggy. It is too bad there is no try before you buy but I'm not totally upset with it now that most prime time shows are out due to the writers' strike.

About the VOD. I don't like how it doesn't show the year on a lot of the movies. I want to make sure the movie isn't 50 years old before I start watching it. The TiVo guide data is not as good as iGuide IMO. I agree about the VOD being laggy. The DCT does allow me to turn off the suggestion crap which was annoying at best. The DCH would not allow me to shut the TiVo suggestions off. I like the iGuide telling you if it's a new episode. If I don't regularly watch a program but want to watch a particular program I have absolutely no idea if it's a repeat or not. Not so big a deal the first week of 2008 but you know what I mean.

I also got a 50.00 credit from Comcast for enduring their public beta test for so long.

Trying to make the decision here, keep my crappy motorola box as is or upgrade(if that's the right term at the moment) to the tivo software.
Can someone comment on the HD support the tivo has -
- Can you filter by HD content? per channel? per program?
- For the local channels, which are avail in both flavors, can you specify a "record the HD version" option?
My wife wants to kill me :) for replacing our beloved tivo2 box with the motorola box, so i'm trying to understand if the switch to tivo will be going back to what we knew and loved, or something different, that just kind-of looks the same.

I can't comment on your specific questions, because I did not get the TiVO upgrade because of all the issues it has, but it has made me think that, since I have had a TiVO since series 1 and never had a problem, I"m going to get a TiVO HD. At least I know what I'm getting and would get support from TiVO.
Like I said, in 8 years or so, I've never had any problems (minor ones with the DIrecTV TivO, but that's another story).

You can filter the guide by HD channel and program type (movies, sports, kids, etc) and also set up the season pass to record HD only. My experience is that Tivo suggestions cannot be set to HD only.
petelang 01-08-08, 03:18 PM back to iguide and DD 5.1 on a DCH3416
mcamden 01-08-08, 04:29 PM Just to be clear - the issues here appear to be with Tivo software on the crappy Moto equipment, not with Tivo. PeteLang, I feel for you with the issues you and others are experiencing; however, these are not typical Tivo issues (at least not issues I've experienced with either Series 2 or the Tivo HD we have).

Depends on the problem. DD not working appears to be a tivo software problem on dch boxes. Lagginess appears to be with the tivo software because my box was not lagging before the change. Guide issues appear to be with Tivo's guide. So it all depends on the issue.
bruce24 01-08-08, 07:00 PM - Can you filter by HD content? per channel? per program?
You can filter to only see HD channels.
- For the local channels, which are avail in both flavors, can you specify a "record the HD version" option?
When you set up a season pass, you can tell it to get HD if possible. You also, like with the Tivo Series 2, get to select the channels you receive. I removed all the non-HD version of the channels I get in HD, along with the channels i'm not interested in. So network shows are only going to be recorded from the HD channels and Suggestions will be in HD if they are from an HD channel.
Overall I prefer the Tivo interface to iGuide, I also have a Tivo Series 2, so I'm used to it. I haven't seen the recording problems that therob006 and petelang.
I have had the guide data run out, once, and go missing for a few hours, once. I'm not happy with the information in the guide, it's less than both iGuide and real Tivo provide. They don't provide a way to know if a show is new or not, they don't provide years for all the shows, there is limited info on actors.
I also have a DCH3416 and can't get Dolby Digital.
Until the end of the month, I have the options of buying and Tivo HD (~$260) and transferring the lifetime subscription from my Tivo 2 to the Tivo HD for $199. At this point I think this is what I am going to do for one of my two boxes and I will keep the other running the Tivo software.

Yes I think it's an issue with the Tivo with the Moto hardware. Not enough testing was done, obviously. From what I understand there is a 4-6 month testing phase that happened before we got it. I'd have to think that either no one participated or they just dumped the software out as is. This build is from September so it's already 4 months old.
If TiVo branded hardware has these kinds of issues, their company would have filed for chapter 11 by now.
Pete
bicker1 01-08-08, 08:04 PM By the same token, BOTH Comcast AND Motorola are FAR more successful than TiVo is.

By the same token, Motorola's stock was trading at $100 a share in 2001. Now it's at $14.85. Tivo hasn't done too bad. Might be awhile until we see Tivo on SA boxes.
therob006 01-08-08, 08:13 PM Ok seriously can I go one day without a new problem popping up?
I'm watching NECN keeping track of what's going on in the NH Primary and I get a phone call. I hit the big yellow PAUSE button and NOTHING HAPPENS. WTF!!!
I'm all done.
I want my old box back and they can keep TiVo.
Pete
Ran into the same problem as you when I came home. But it started with a frozen picture. Change channel and that fixed that. Then the play/pause commands were not working. I let it run for 20 minute and it was working. So strange.

Pete, I feel for ya, I really do.
I do have to chuckle about this, though, because all the press and earlier postings of Comcast TiVo beta testing said they were having there employees do that testing. Now I have never really been impressed with any of their field techs (I live in the southeast part of the country) as they lack expertise, so perhaps they were the ones who did the Comcast beta testing. All the beta testing was done in New England. In fact, a lot of the new Comcast products got tested in New England first like CDV. I heard this was a hurried release because tivo was getting impatient.

cypherstream 01-09-08, 08:40 AM I personally like Motorola.... for phones and two way radios.
Cable boxes on the other hand sure have their issues. I won't dismiss them right away however, they are showing promise with the new DCX line of set tops coming out late this year. We'll have to wait and see. Everyone learns from their mistakes, and I hope Motorola is no exception.

While therob006 was off saying it hit $100 in 2001, it did hit $60. Don't you think picking a time starting in 2003 when it was at it's low in the $4-$5 range for a comparison is kind of misleading?
garberfc 01-09-08, 09:11 AM Yeah well I'm WFH today so it gives me something to do. I saw Ron Paul was in ManchVegas at a polling location. I'm watching NECN now and was watching Fox25 Morning News this AM.
Tech will be here around 3-3:30 to give me a DCH3416 back and take this POS TiVo DCT3412 out of here.
I also got a 50.00 credit from Comcast for enduring their public beta test for so long.

Being a long time TiVo lover, I hate to say it, but it sounds like you've been more of an Alpha tester and the box is NOT ready to be rolled out.
This is going to give TiVo a bad name. Shame on Comcast!!! :(
garberfc 01-09-08, 09:14 AM I just got notified that in Salem, MA the Tivo service is available. Sadly, after 18 months of waiting, I think I'm going to tell them to forget it for now. If the new iGuide doesn't fix what I need when it comes out in a few weeks I may consider it. It's pretty sad as I've read this thread probably daily for the last 2 years.
I'm in the same situation. How depressing.... :(:(
garberfc 01-09-08, 09:24 AM I would be doubtful of this, but hey, great if true!
Expandable storage is where it is at for sure. I will upgrade my Tivo HD to 1TB when those drives get down to $149.
Which 1TB drive are you waiting for? Only the 500GB (http://www.tivo.com/mytivo/domore/storage/index.html) drive has been verified.

If, in fact, Comcast was having only employees do the "Beta" testing, that really sounds more like Alpha testing. You would normally want a limited number of real end-user customers doing Beta testing (mirroring real end-user conditions) and getting and using that feedback to work the bugs out. In this case the limited New England roll-out in December/January has been the real Beta, but it doesn't seem to be going well. Not sure a wider release makes sense right now.

Arent they both in this together? Also, wasn't it stated that Tivo pushed this release for financial reasons? Last time I checked, Comcast didn't make the buggy (tivo) software, or the (Motorola) boxes. Not trying to defend Comcast, but that statement just got me thinking.
I agree, the whole Comcast/Tivo thing seems like a cluster*&%#, but to blame Comcast seems a little unfair. I think all 3 (Comcast, Tivo, Motorola) are to blame here.

After playing with it for a few weeks, IMO the major problems are the software Tivo delivered and the guide data Comcast (I think) chose to use along with it's ability to consistently provide updates. As far as Motorola goes, sure they could have provided a faster processor and better IR receiver, but Comcast chose the box and Tivo knew this was the box their software had to run on.

I'm a recent convert to the Tivo HD from the craptastic Comcast iGuide DVR. Guess what, I don't get the Tivo sounds when DD is being output either. So if that is a big pet peeve for you with ComcasTivo then you're still SOL. Of course, this thing stomps the Comcast DVR in every way imaginable...

I currently have a TiVO HR10 with DirecTV, and it also does not output the TiVO "pings and bongs" when DD 5-1 is being output, but does otherwise. Just to keep the TiVO guide will be worth the $.
mtchamp 01-09-08, 02:07 PM Well, I cancelled my install. Too many complaints. This forum has been invaluable regarding the new Comcast TiVo experience. I already have 2 TiVo HD's, one with CableCards and one without, so Comcast has a very happy customer in that regard. However, I really wanted to try out an all in one Comcast box with TiVo and do a comparison with the TiVo HD for myself, but it appears until Comcast lets TiVo build them a real Comcast TiVo integrated box like they did for DirecTV, this idea of making TiVo work with generic hardware was probably not a good idea. Maybe TiVo can fix the issues and maybe it's already an improvemrnt in some ways, but who needs any extra stress over someting as simple as TV. Everybody can now just go buy a TiVo HD, mine work teriific.

I wish you would have kept it and done some side by side comparisons.
Most people so far either have never had Tivo, or only have a Tivo Series 1 or 2, so the comparisons have been limited in quality.

So let me understand this. You have Tivo HD and when you are using DD output, you are not getting the Tivo sounds?
If so, the problem is not the Comcast tivo box but the software that Tivo is developing.
I'll skip Comcast TIVO also.
1. Limited and buggy TIVO software on top of
2. Terrible i-guide listings and software on top of
3. unstable MOTO firmware on top of
4. DCT hardware
That's another 2 years of pain and misery that I don't want to go
through again.
3 years of this DVR and I'm ALMOST willing to say it's OK
to go out of beta testing.:D
What an embarrassment for all involved. TIVO should've known better
than to get into bed with the devil. D*TV is an angel in comparison.
P.S. Moto's stock increase probably has more to do with cell-phone sales.
they went from MONSTER ugly business phones (70's calculators) to top US cell sales in about 6 years or so, almost knocking Nokia out of the US market for a few years. Plus, MOTO is a pretty big company.

For those on the fence, at this point it may just be better to wait a few months and see how Comcast and Tivo try to address these issues.
I bought my TivoHD last summer because I expect(ed) it to be years before it came to Seattle and because I just couldn't use the iGuide/SARA system after using the MS guide for years. And while we beta-tested the MS guide for years, it did get better over time and added features and functionality.
In no way do I regret dropping $600 on TivoHD and 3 years of service. It works great and I am very, very satisfied. And that my cable bill dropped $15 a month is even more satisfying.
However, I have to be honest and say that if we still had the MS guide, I'd still be using it and waiting for ComcastTivo to arrive instead of buying the TivoHD. And if we had just been weaned off of MS and put on iGuide/SARA, I'd likely be waiting (and praying) for ComcastTivo to deploy here.

How long have you been beta-testing this Comcast-Tivo unit?
therob006 01-09-08, 04:05 PM 2. Terrible i-guide listings and software on top of
The listings do not come from TV Guide/Gemstar but Tribune Media which all other TiVo boxes use. So any errors and glitches appear to be from tivo and not Comcast. Where normal tivo boxes uses a phone line for guide downloads, the moto box uses a modem connected to the internet.

2. terrible Tribune Media i-guide
Never blamed Comcast for the i-guide problems. Well, I do pay them.
Don't have Tivo, but I'm sick of deleting the 3am recording of Conan everyday because i-guide doesn't know it's a 3 week old repeat.
PVRBolg article reports that TIVO largely sits on top of i-guide and therefore
this is largely another layer of software that the DCT boxes don't need.

I'm just stating what I know. The iGuide from Gemstar is deleted from the box and replaced with tivo's guide from Tribune. No sense having two guide on one box. Moral of the story is do not believe everything you read on bloggers' web pages. :D

If DD is being output, say when you are watching a show with DD, Tivo can not out Tivo's sounds effect, this is the limitation of every Tivo out there. Tivo's sounds effect is not in DD, so it would have to re-encode it into the DD sound stream, which is probabaly (IMO) not cost effective for Tivo to spend the CPU cycle to do, or maybe even a limit in the MPEG encoder/decoder.
However on my standalone Tivo S3, even with DD output, if I switch to a show without DD, or going into a menu without the show still going on in the background, then Tivo reverts back to output non-DD sound, and the sound effects can be heard. This was the way it worked way back to my DirecTivo HDVR2 from 2003.

McGuireV10 01-09-08, 06:08 PM Is there a site available which gives a comprehensive rundown of how the Comcast Tivo setup compares to a real Tivo? I just got rid of a DirecTV Tivo and shut off satellite for Comcast HD in expectation of being able to get HD and Tivo without shelling out $700. The regular Comcast DVR is an incredibly painful experience (I had one of the first original Tivos and have always owned at least one).
I'm just wondering how it compares without having to slog through two years of speculation, misinformation, discussion, flame wars, and all the other wonderful parts of forum life in this area that I missed while I was hand-wringing over which projector to buy. :)
I just had it installed today and so far I LOVE IT !!!!!
I really wish it had the 30 second skip :-(
1) When i hit a button something happens !!!!!!
2) I can edit my guide so I only have to scroll through the channels I watch.
3) Did I mention that when I hit a button something happens !!!!
I was told I was the first install in Hanson and it did take a long time but well worth the wait :D
The tech was great !!!!!! (John)
I'll keep you all posted with actual FACTS about how it is or is not working over the next few days. Wish me luck ;)

I have the service since the weekend. A few observations... and if y'all have fixes, please bring em' on.
2. There is a lot of slowness and delay particularly when changing channels. When selecting programs you get this very informative screen with information, etc. However, it stays up far too long and I can't find a setting to reduce the time as there was in my Series 2.
.
If you hit the right arrow button while the info screen is up you can change the size of it. When you change the size it goes away faster.
Hope that helps.

Genovese 01-09-08, 11:05 PM It's sad, I was soooooo looking forward to getting the Tivo interface, but after hearing the issues people are experiencing (and especially the lack of the 30 second skip), I think I'm going to hold off for now. Great job Comcast.....
No 30 second skip, no TIVO for me. Beyond recording itself, the 30 second skid is the most used function on my iGuide equiped box. I simply can't do without it.
I'd consider it a blessing to not hear the TiVo sounds. I find them annoying, especially that "bass drum" sound when you fat finger the buttons and accidently arrow the wrong direction.
Well the option does exist to turn off the Tivo sounds entirely. There is also the option to downmix any DD channels to PCM which will preserve the Tivo sounds always. I'm currently debating whether to just turn off the Tivo sounds altogether and keep DD, or to downmix everything to PCM and keep Tivo sounds always. Having the Tivo sounds come and go is more annoying than anything...

Well I don't have a link for you and I'm not sure such a list exists, but I can tell you my experience in going from the regular Comca$t DVR to a Tivo HD. You can read here in the last few pages all the complaints about the Comca$Tivo from the few who have it.
The only thing I know of that Comca$Tivo has over TivoHD is the "get in HD if available" functionality for season passes. (I'm sure I will be corrected if I'm wrong...) OTOH the TivoHD has quite a bit of functionality that the Comca$Tivo lacks. A short list would be multi-room viewing, and all the networking capabilities - such as being able to access your music, photos, and videos through your home network on the TivoHD. This feature is pretty important to me and one of the reasons I decided to go with the TivoHD. The online scheduling feature is also very handy. When I'm at work and I hear about an upcoming show I can simply schedule it to record online instead of sending myself an email to remember to schedule it when I get home. Sure the TivoHD is $250-$300 up front, but it is significantly cheaper monthly than Comcast's DVR is. My latest bill showed standard DVR service going up to $14 per month. I could not stomach paying that much for that POS. I ended up going with the deal for the TivoHD with lifetime service for ~$698. I am very happy that I did.
SangLad 01-10-08, 04:00 AM It's been two days since I switched over from Comcast DVR to Comcast TiVo. I got an email from comcast saying that Comcast TiVo was available in my area. It took about 35 minutes to download the whole TiVo software. TiVo UI is great, but it is a tad bit slow just like the Comcast DVR. So far that is the only minor point.

It was just introduced, in limited areas. As the deployment grows exponentially, expect the number of subscribers to grow exponentially.
It do agree that there has been way too much back-seat quarterbacking from folks like bruce24, speculating how this service offering portends the end of Comcast or some silliness like that. I wish it would stop. It won't. Get used to it, just like I have.
The service is what it is. It responds to a specific need. It is priced appropriately. These things shouldn't be subject to debate in the absence of the market research data, which none of us have, yet some people want to discuss it anyway, so we do. Heck, I'd rather this thread be strictly limited to discussions by the folks who have the service, about the service. I don't get what I want in that respect, but I don't complain about it.
bicker1 01-10-08, 07:33 AM If 'RECENTLY' is more than 3 and a half years ago.No, rather over the last five years, as I said, a normal comparative period for company performance.
lightbox 01-10-08, 08:01 AM The only thing I know of that Comca$Tivo has over TivoHD is the "get in HD if available" functionality for season passes.
IMHO, the biggest advantage of the Comcast TiVo over TiVoHD is that the Comcast setup is able to search and watch VOD programs. However, the Comcast TiVo setup lacks TiVo's networking and Intenet features, such as Home Media, movie downloads, etc. (The Ethernet port on the Motorola boxes is not active.)
brytrinque 01-10-08, 08:08 AM The tech came out yesterday and "installed" the Tivo software on my DCH cable box. When I say installed, I mean sat on my couch for over an hour on his cell phone took about 5 minutes testing the signal strengh then left without changing the default picture settings from 480i to 1080i ( the picture took up about 1/8th of my screen).
Also he did not leave me the fancy new Tivo branded remote I was promissed. Without this remote you can not change the guide settings or use the thumbs up/ thumbs down functionality ( not that I could figure out or Comcast's tech support could figure out anyway). He was supposed to return between 5- 7 to drop off the remote and never showed. I was told that they would either leave it in my front door today, or if they could not do that I have another appt. scheduled for Friday 5-7 to get my remote. Due to all these problems I asked for my 14.95 fee back and I was assured it would be credited on my next bill.
I also questioned why the Dolby 5.1 was not working and after looking through meeting minutes from his supervisor he found a note that there was a firmware update scheduled for the first quarter that will fix this problem. Ill hang tight with my DCH box with the 160gb hard drive and hope this guy was right about the firmware update.
I do find that the Tivo software seems to respond somewhat better than it did before the update so hopefully it stays that way.

I tried that and I am still not getting any Tivo sounds from the box. I even tried deactivating the DD but still nothing. I'm not minding it so much.
The Ethernet port does not need to be active because the modem in the box is active and being used by the RF connection like a regular modem would. This is the delivery method for the guide and thumbs up/down comparision with other users. But certainly VOD is an advantage over any other provider and their tivo box or tivo alone with a cable card. Now if only the thing would move a little faster.....

I don't know whether the Ethernet port "needs" to be active, but according a TiVo product manager I talked with at the CES show this week, the networking functions for a Comcast TiVo will only become available if Comcast activates the Ethernet port on the Moto boxes.
McGuireV10 01-10-08, 08:49 AM Well I don't have a link for you and I'm not sure such a list exists, but I can tell you my experience in going from the regular Comca$t DVR to a Tivo HD.
I bought the lifetime service with my first Tivo -- before it was made clear that it was tied to that specific box. Six months later a bolt of lightning killed that box and I was screwed. At that point I switched to satellite (Dish Network, back then) because the Tivo was a little cheaper and the subscription plan was a lot cheaper. Later I switched to DirecTV and got their Tivo, and I've hung on to it like a lifeline until I finally decided I wanted HD. Is the Tivo lifetime plan any better now or is it still tied to the hardware? It's too expensive to get screwed twice by it.
Since I just came from a DirecTV series 2, I never had the sharing stuff (which doesn't matter to me anyway; my whole house runs off a centralized AV distribution system in a dedicated closet). The networked scheduling is sort of interesting, but I don't watch much TV, I tend to set up my recordings by keywords and wish-lists and let it go. I'd be hard pressed to think of a time when I thought, "I really need to remember to record that."
Even the "cheap" Tivo HD (not series 3) gets pretty expensive once you add their subscription service to the mix. My point is, I'm not really asking, should I get a Tivo HD or not. I'm asking, how does the Comcast HD Tivo service compare to the more core features of Tivo?
I've gotten some answers already (it bugs me that you can't disable the crappy Suggestions system), but I'm thinking about questions like this: Does it have all the same wishlist, season pass, and keyword features? Are they as generally reliable as the Tivo is? How do various areas of the system respond compared to a real Tivo? (Even my old 75MHz PowerPC-based series 2 Tivo was overwhelmingly more responsive than the awful Comcast DVR system.) Is the program guide the same? Are you still stuck with the Comcast remote? (I actually use a Pronto, but I recognize the general superiority of the Tivo remote over the Comcast behemoth.) It's more of a "what's better and what's worse" question...

Wishlist, season pass and keyword features - Yes to all
Reliable - Missed two recordings but other then that its all good
Guide is the same
The tech will deliver a tivo remote
IMO, its a different bred of the same animal. Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Wrangler have the same core design but other things are vastly different. Same deal with the tivo software it appears.
McGuireV10 01-10-08, 09:02 AM Thank you. Now I'll just patiently grow old, waiting for the office drones at Comcast to finally have a meeting which allows me to actually use it.

Yes the lifetime sub is still tied to the box. My rationale was that I had already decided to go with the $299 up front for 3 years of service deal, because ~$8.30 a month for the sub is a great deal. Then I considered the resale value of the unit with lifetime service, which is really good. I figured the extra hundy was worth it, considering if I decide to sell it within 3 years and had bought the 3 year plan there would be no value added to the box without the lifetime service AND I would be wasting some of my months.
What i'd really like to know is what was Motorola thinking when they put in the IR receiver on this box - Maybe they wanted people to be more active while watching tv, no more pointing the remote at the general direction, sit up and point straight :)

Actually yes that used to drive me nuts with the moto box. The Tivo HD pretty much gets the signal no matter where you are pointing the remote.
I used a TiVo Series1 from 2000 to 2004 and have had a Series3 for over a year. I have loved them both. Between my two TiVo boxes, I rented from Cox OKC a Scientific Atlanta 8000HD and, later, an 8300HD, both running SARA software. Both sucked.
Based on my experience with TiVo DVRs, I can represent to a near certainty that the problems you Comcast folks in New England are having with the TiVo-Comcast implementation on Comcast’s Motorola boxes are related to the implementation, not to the soundness of the TiVo software.
I know that many of you may be screaming, “So WHAT,” and I understand. That the TiVo software works well on TiVo’s own boxes doesn’t do anything for you, at least not yet. Still, I believe that there is reason to hope that TiVo and Comcast will solve the current problems. TiVo’s software is simply too good for it not to happen eventually.

All things considered, Comcast is not on the first version of the guide. Any errors from previous versions were fixed and new elements were added. Same should hold true for the Tivo software. It may never be what tivo offers on their boxes but any bugs will be fixed. It is just a matter of time.

Ok so a few days back with the DCH and the iGuide. DCH is still noticably faster than the DCT with TiVo. One thing I miss from TiVo is when you hit play and it shuffles back a few seconds. I don't miss the erratic guide data and the little to no useful information in the Guide. Having DD on the DCH is great and compared to the DCT there is just no contest.
Maybe in Q2 or Q3 when the bugs are fixed I might switch back but I really like the iGuide Reminder feature and TiVo has nothing similar. I will enjoy 3 months of free DVR service for my pain and suffering through their Beta test.

When I fast-forward through commercial breaks and the press play, it does jump back about 15 - 20 seconds. It does not skip to the makers however. When I press the button for that, it jumps right to the end.

You should have been able to get a replacement box and been able to transfer the subscription - as long as you go through Tivo or an authorized repair/reseller location. I know plenty of people that have lost boxes for various reasons that were able to do that. You just can't replace the box yourself and expect it to be transferred.

I agree.
I'm all for TIVO, it's great stuff.
But I already suffered through 2.5 years of these boxes as it went from a disaster to mediocre. There's also been some reports that the latest i-guide A26 is supposed to be pretty good.:o
I'll sit on the sidelines for a while. But I'm definitely looking forward to the next step of progress.:p

I hear you, if I were a Comcast customer and had the Passport software on one of their boxes I would probably hesitate to replace it with the new stuff from TiVo right now, too. It does seem not quite ready for prime time. I could not live without the 8 second rewind feature, which even the primitive SARA software, which Cox OKC uses on its Scientific Atlanta boxes, has. I would also not want to give up the 30 second skip-ahead feature, which all of TiVo's own boxes have, either.
bruce24 01-10-08, 02:40 PM No, rather over the last five years, as I said, a normal comparative period for company performance.
So are 3 months, 6 months, 12 months and 2 years, but none of them would have made your original statement true.

Highest stock price for Motorola: 101.00 on 6/1/2000 which was followed up by a 3:1 stock split.
Highest stock price for TiVo: 71.50 on 1/10/2000 which was followed up by a 20 drop the next day.
Based on those numbers, stock has done well compared to Tivo. Graphs are useless since it cannot take into account stock splits.

I know I showed up late for this party, but how does a general electronics company's stock have any relevance to the performance (or worse, the specific numbers) of a DVR company's stock? Both boxes contain Texas Instruments chips, should we be worried about their closes and trends too? :D

this is were I got it from.
There are a few links from there.
The links are a little touchy try them more than once.
They tend to hang up.
a26 appears to be in HD.(YEAH!!!!!)
Has better search capabilities, parental controls, multi-room capabilities
and hopefully more stability and consistency.
It seems we are on a24, everyone is skipping a25
and I think a26 is written in java? (i assume it isn't now?)
These are the things I remember from the articles I found at the time.
Early 2008 release????
Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong.
mtchamp 01-10-08, 04:49 PM I live in Acushnet MA and got nervous from what I heard here and decided to cancel a Comcast TiVo install since I already have a couple TiVo HD's. I've now read a number of comparisons with experience between the TiVo HD and the Comcast TiVo that were positive, so I went ahead and rescheduled the install for Monday and will be able to report back. I do want to try it out because I love my TiVos and want to see if Comcast On Demand and VOD integrated within the TiVo interface will be useful to me even if that's all it's good for.
Upon my second call to reschedule, not only am I not paying an installation fee, I asked for a deal for upgrading my service to DVR and received a $20 monthly credit for 12 months. On top of that my monthly DVR fee with TiVo included will now be $16, not $20 as I was first quoted. All this means that you can negotiate while upgrading to DVR with TiVo service.

Some of us have a tendency to get off topic. This isn't the first thread we did this with.

Getting back ON topic, Comcast now has the user manual for Motorola/Tivo available in PDF format for those interested.

McGuireV10 01-10-08, 05:41 PM Cool... I notice page 9 says you CAN turn off Tivo's suggested recordings.
The funny part is that the Comcast phone-drones still won't even acknowledge that Comcast Tivo exists. I mentioned it while activating HD the other day, just to see what they'd say. "I've heard rumors", said Bob-from-Texas with the Mumbai accent...
NetworkTV 01-10-08, 06:01 PM Cool... I notice page 9 says you CAN turn off Tivo's suggested recordings.

mike12806 01-10-08, 06:49 PM 2 things....how will the tivo update itself if it is constantly "on"? Wonder if we will get some sort of dialog box that will prompt a restart? I doubt this thing is sophisticated enough to just update on the fly....

It probaly will do it when there's not activity going on. You'll probably turn your TV on to find a screen that says "Congratulations! You're up to date." Or, if you turn it on early in the morning you'll find an update in progress. That's the way the standalones do it, anyway.
petelang 01-10-08, 07:15 PM Cool... I notice page 9 says you CAN turn off Tivo's suggested recordings.
You can if you have a DCT box. Something is broken in the DCH or Host box as Comcast likes to call it and it will NOT allow you to turn it off. At least not on the two DCH boxes I had. When I got the DCT3412 I was able to turn it off finally.

bicker1 01-10-08, 08:00 PM So are 3 months, 6 months, 12 months and 2 years, but none of them would have made your original statement true.I noticed you didn't mention 5 days, which is the other choice on most quote engines -- because, of course, Motorola is doing better than TiVo over that period.
But heck, stock price is so illusory. Let's talk hard cold cash:
MOTOROLA
Net Income 2006: $3,661,000,000 2005: $4,578,000,000 2004: $1,532,000,000
TIVO
Net Income 2006: ($47,754,000) 2005: ($34,398,000) 2004: ($79,842,000)
Okay, let's try this again: Which company is doing better?
cypherstream 01-10-08, 08:18 PM So according to the manual it says you can go to On Demand from the Tivo Central menu, or click the on demand button on the remote.
Is there no more Channel 1 entry to get to On Demand? Can you still type in 1 <enter> and see One Moment Please, and then see the new Tivo VOD navigation screen come up?
Also what different Aspect correction options are available when you click the ASPECT button on the remote? Is the Motorola box doing the scaling, or does it send a zoom mode I.R. code specific to the TV to force the TV to change modes?
Seems like the Fixed format resolution options are just like selecting Stretch for 4:3 override in the old software?
mike12806 01-10-08, 08:36 PM Tivo froze....now will not boot up. Get's to grey "please wait" screen, then cycles on/off over and over again? Called comcast, said they would send refresh signals and wait a half hour. Still nothing. HELP.
bruce24 01-10-08, 08:51 PM so when you said:
Uh.... Motorola's stock was about $4 a share in 2003, so given that they're $14.85 now, I'd say they're doing MIGHTILY well.
and posted a MOT vs TIVO stock graph for the last 5 years you were talking about doing better on net earnings? I got it now.
bruce24 01-10-08, 09:04 PM Is there no more Channel 1 entry to get to On Demand? Can you still type in 1 <enter> and see One Moment Please, and then see the new Tivo VOD navigation screen come up?
Yes, there is a channel 1 you can get to by entering the channel # or selecting the channel from the guide.
Also what different Aspect correction options are available when you click the ASPECT button on the remote? Is the Motorola box doing the scaling, or does it send a zoom mode I.R. code specific to the TV to force the TV to change modes?

I had never tried the button until just now. The cable box appears to be doing the scaling. It cycles you between what it calls Panel(normal), Zoom(full width, top and bottom cut) and Full(stretch). Once I have the cable box change to full, I tried my TV remote to change the scale and it is giving me some weird results trying to scale a scaled image.

Lame.
I decided to turn off suggestions. It hasn't recorded anything I want to watch and this behavior is way too annoying because the only way to solve it is to go into the suggested recordings folder and stop that recording then go back to live tv and tune to the channel you wanted in the first place.
This is in contrast to what happens if it's recording 2 suggested programs and you turn the channel - it simply stops recording one of them without asking you.
On the upside for TivoHD, I did just download Live Free Or Die Hard from Amazon unbox for $1.99. The quality is actually better than I was expecting. I'd say it's very close to DVD quality. I heard a rumor that they'd be offering HD content for download soon. Keeping my fingers crossed...

Well that sucks. I have the option of working from home so I just waited around for the tech to show up whenever he could. If you go into the config screen, power off and then hit select I think it should have the d01, d02 etc. Go to the modem one and see what it's reporting.
I'd power it off for about 5 min and then turn it back on. See what happens.

But yeah, I agree, it should do that on its own or ask you.

I got it now.No, I was talking about their stock price increasing over the last five years. Now I'm talking about how great their net earnings have been -- net earnings being considered a "fundamental" indicator of success of a business. So now you have even more evidence that Motorola is doing "MIGHTILY well".

I can not get Dolby Digital sound with my new Motarola dch-3416 TIVO box. I read in a forum there was a firmware update?
This stuck out to me. So you lied to the representative? We know its an issue and confirmed its an issue. We've called on it and we know its a software glitch with the tivo software on DCH boxes. I think we've only been chatting about here for the past two weeks. Plus software updates are always downloaded automatically. There is no magic button.
Here is the very simple fix. Get a DCT box. I have one and the DD is outputing just fine. I'm not getting the tivo sounds or the green screen when using HDMI.

yeah, where is the forum talking about a firmware?
I think he was just trying to get a price break which you won't get over internet chat. If he would have called I bet he would have gotten the charge removed from his bill for a month.

Sounds more like desperation to me. I do not understand that "Sold to me part" seeing how this is not being advertised on tv, radio and newspapers. No where on the Comcast page does it promises DD for all channels. But then again, we are all experiencing bugs with the tivo. Should we all get discounts too? Really. I want that penny back per day.
jdg0928 01-11-08, 01:55 PM I wasn't sure how some folks were getting a waiver for the truck roll, so I called a few minutes before my appointment this afternoon to ask. The CSR told me that I should ask the tech since this is just a software upgrade. The CSR said he couldn't do anything about it at the moment since a truck roll automatically has a charge associated with it.
Nausicaa 01-11-08, 02:20 PM I wasn't sure how some folks were getting a waiver for the truck roll...
At least initially, Comcast required a truck-roll to have ComcastTivo installed because of the number of issues customers were encountering with remote downloads. Because it was mandatory, it was complementary (no charge). It is quite possible your office just didn't get the memo and you will not be billed. :D
As an aside, while I am in Seattle, my service evidently has some type of "line maintenance" agreement so when they scheduled a truck-roll to assist me with some post-installation issues with my TivoHD, I was told I would not be charged (and was not).
mark03110 01-11-08, 03:20 PM Can somebody who actually has the Tivo software please tell me if jump to tick marks works? So if you fast forward or rewind and press the Advance button does it jump to the next tick mark or just to the end of the recording?
And if I press the Advance button twice will it jump to the end and then back to the beginning of the recording?
I'm scheduled for the upgrade tomorrow morning and if 30-sec skip doesn't work I at least need that feature to work.
Thanks,
Mark

jdg0928 01-11-08, 04:00 PM This is not starting out well...
I had an appointment for 1-3 p.m. today to upgrade to TiVo software ... At 2:31 p.m., I was watching a recorded show and the screen went to black ... Lost all functionality of the box (DVR, guide, clock on the front, etc.) other than watching live television ... Most remote buttons no longer do what they should.
I gave the tech until 3:30 p.m. before I called ... The CSR said my account showed that the tech completed the job ... She was puzzled at why it would say that when it clearly wasn't completed because the techs are supposed to come in the house and I didn't have the correct remote ... My issue was escalated and CSR said I would receive a call within 30 minutes (15 left at the time of this post).
I asked who I should contact about getting a waiver for the truck roll ... CSR gave me a $20 credit ... That works for me as long as this gets resolved before the end of the day.
Am in Watertown too and had a 3 PM appointment for the Tivo install..nothing yet either. I am not sure if there is a 3-5 window..but when I made appointment I was offered 1, 2, or 3 PM and not any windows. Wondering if I should wait longer or call and see if they have my job as completed too?
PS. Did they ever call you back in the 30 minutes?

Tick marks are there and seem to be 15 minute intervals. I've done everything I could to get it to advance along those and it does not. The 30-sec skip does not work at all. I just fastfoward in hyperspeed and hit play just as the show begins and it jumps back to the end of the break.

No call by 4:15 p.m. so I called them ... Got through on my second attempt ... CSR thought the trouble may have started because I may have missed a call from them at 12:30 ... I politely said that would not be an acceptable answer when my appointment began at 1 p.m. and I received a confirmation yesterday.
More investigating by CSR revealed that someone processed the go-back request at 4:15 p.m. ... CSR emailed that person and promised to call me back by 5:15 p.m. (which she did) to make sure I have heard from someone.
Just received a call letting me know that my job was accidentally closed out when the tech left another person's home ... Another tech has picked up the job and should be here by 6 p.m. ... Not sure I buy the accident part since something was done to my box, but I'll let it go if they get here on time.

I should note that I have dealt with some very nice people, especially when I've remained calm. (Often I think they are just relieved to have someone who isn't yelling at them.) The problem seems to be that these people are trapped in the horrible systems in place at Comcast.
The one major exception is Nancy at the Watertown, Mass., payment center. She's probably just fine in other situations or even to other people, but I have dealt with her three times in the past two months and have found her to be extremely rude and frustrating, for instance telling me that HD boxes with HDMI didn't exist. (I feel bad calling her out, but I was a first-time visitor to that office and she treated me very poorly.)

Mike20878 01-11-08, 05:35 PM I'm considering dumping my Comcast DVR and getting TiVo HD while they are still offering the lifetime transfer option. I called Comcast and the CSR informed me that "cablecards do not support HD." What the hell are they talking about? I was just trying to get an idea what my charges would be with TiVo HD. He couldn't give me a straight answer on whether the HD tier is included in my triple play bundle.

When you get a dummy CSR like that, the easiest thing to do is say GOODBYE as fast as you can, wait a minute, and call right back. Chances are pretty good you'll get a different CSR, who might have a clue. I used to do that with Verizon's DSL tech support, when some guy from India would tell me in a thick accent that his name was "Bud" or some such foolishness.
I bought a TiVO HD at Best Buy today, and with a coupon and a gift card refund of $50, it cost me around 215$ plus tax. Well worth not having to wait til they got the Comcast/TiVO d/l working properly.

Only thing I can think is that they may have misspoke and meant CableCARDs don't support VOD, which is true.

I got sick of waiting for the comcast offering and made the jump in december so far so good. The box was slow for the first week while all of the guide data was indexing but now it is fine. The best part is now lag and when you press a button it actually does something.
I'm being charged 3.00 for one cable card and the other one is free.
mike12806 01-11-08, 05:56 PM Well that sucks.

I can't even get to the box menu....it wont let me get to that point. I get the grey screen box where it says "Please Wait" in red...not the "Welcome, Please Wait" tivo box, but before that, and it reboots again and again and again. AH!

Cable Cards certain do HD. As far as your package goes, you may want to check the comcast web site.

This is a good possibility, that was the original plan for the remotes, although most do bring them out. Almost all functions of the Tivo remote are available on the silver Comcast remote. Only things missing are slow forward, delete & skip to tick (which doesn't seem to do much right now anyway).

"But what's really cool is that this software will run on any tru2way HDTV, -- obviously the TV would have to have an integrated DVR for all the functionality -- which we should see hit the streets by the end of 2008."
So, in the unlikely event that we run into a bug on a TV that's running tru2way, who do we call for support?

Call Comcast and let them know. But my understanding is the tech should be staying at the home until its working.

Good evening,
Techs left a little while ago..before the downloads finished on both dvrs and claimed they will come by tomorrow morning to check on downloads and bring remotes. I haven't checked upstairs dvr yet but the new box they installed down here is a dch 3416 and on the front of the box it says 1080i. In the tivo setup it says its set for 4..I forget the 400 # but when I try and change to 1080i it says to complete change I need to hit the thumbs up button. Well, I don't have the remotes yet..what should I do? Am noticing on my hd channels that the picture is no longer full screen but just the middle of the screen is filled..unlike previous comcast software. Is something wrong here and how do I go about fixing it?
Thanks

If you have a dct box then shut it off then hit menu then down and change it to 1080i in the menu.... if you have a dch then just use the format button on the front of the box.. same thing happened to me

I'd call and complain to one of the reps who were trained on Tivo. I was told the techs are not supposed to leave until the download is complete and the picture is up.

jdg0928 01-11-08, 07:50 PM As for that tech who left Tom's house before the download was complete... he was to be at my place (just around the corner) by 6 p.m. ... for my 1-3 p.m. appointment. It's now 7:50 p.m. and he's still wrestling with the third STB and a 40-minute software download. And he was leaving his regular shift at 4 p.m. when they called him with these two TiVo deployments. This is going to be a long, painful rollout for Comcast.
I feel bad for him. He seems like a very nice guy, but he's in a rough situation with the boxes, the person he's speaking with on the phone and other rollout issues. Not to mention that his wife is waiting for him to have dinner and he's supposed to be home when his ex-wife drops off their daughter. At least I've made a friend because of Comcast's incompetence.

Unfortunately I don't think the 'enter/hd zoom' button does the same thing as the button you're looking for but there is a code for the correct 'enter' button on the wiki which you could reprogram some other unused button on the remote to do that. (it's labeled as the 'Music channel list' button on there)

Good evening,
Thanks for the info about changing the resolution on the dch box..works like a charm now. Much appreciated. My second dvr is dead..I can change channels but no on demand and no my dvr and no guide. I called Comcast and she tested the modem and it was dead. She was shocked that the tech would leave before thedownload finished..but they are sending someone in the morning with new equipment. I basically begged her to note to bring a new dvr and the remotes..I hope they do.
Thanks again
Tom

Is there going to be a 30 second skip for the TiVO ?
Is there going to be a 30 second skip for the TiVO ?
We can only hope. Sorry, I was just referring to the skip with the iGuide. I'm sure if there is one this will be one of the first places to find it.
jdg0928 01-11-08, 09:09 PM So... to make a long story short ... I had a 1-3 p.m. appointment ... After three or four calls, the tech showed up at 6 p.m. ... Left at 8:15 p.m. with no TiVo software, no Comcast DVR, no guide and no functionality other than changing channels ... I have an 8 a.m. to noon window tomorrow for another tech visit.
Tech went through three boxes ... He took my original box, so I lost any chance of recovering the shows that were recorded (box was seemingly dead, so I didn't resist) ... He also said that TiVo on the DCH-3416 wouldn't work through HDMI (don't recall seeing that in any forum).
I called billing to document today's issues ... Pointed out that I have seven hours invested in this already, that I should be credited for some DVR service since I lost my recordings and that I wasn't paying any truck roll fees ... CSR was great and said to call when everything was done to figure out a total credit.
At about 7:45 p.m., I was thinking that $220-260 for TiVo HD didn't sound like such a bad deal!
bruce24 01-11-08, 09:12 PM He also said that TiVo on the DCH-3416 wouldn't work through HDMI (don't recall seeing that in any forum).
This isn't true, I have a pair of DCH-3416's each connected to a TV via an HDMI cable.
Good evening...to sort of follow up on my tivo install adventures for the day...after speaking to a rep on the phone I decided to forget about and just wait for tomorrow. Had a couple of dvds I was going to bring to my room to watch since the dvr wouldn't give me anything. Well, when I came up to bed lo and behold my dvr is back to normal..I turned it on and hit the my dvr button and there was Tivo. Not sure how or why but it was there. What is surprising to me is that the rep on the phone tested my box and said the modem was not responding and they would definitely need to bring a new box in the morning. Not sure whats happening but will give it a whirl.

The modem may just have not been enabled so it looked dead (which they may have figured out & corrected). As we all know on these forums this is a very new product & they have some new ways of how things have to be done & how they work. It would be great if a news flash was sent to all of customer service and field techs when something new is discovered but unfortunately this is not so, so the info has to trickle out to different departments & their people. Glad to hear they got the box working though.
pianoman41 01-12-08, 12:32 AM Like others on here, I've always been an early adopter of new tech gear (had my first ReplayTV in 1999--still use it daily), but as excited as I was to replace the craptacular Motorola DVR with the Tivo interface, I think I'm going to pass until more of the bugs are worked out. The sluggishness, no DD5.1, no quick-skip, etc are just too many things that need to be fixed--especially if I'm *paying* for this 'upgrade.' My Comcast HD DVR will get me by on HD material and my trusty Replays will continue with SD duty for the foreseeable future.
jskinvest 01-12-08, 07:27 AM Just got TIVO downloaded on my Comcast box. It is definitely not ready for prime time. On Demand freezes indefinitely. Comcast says they are having server problems for TIVO subscribers with On Demand. When you switch tuners during live programming it plays live for a few seconds then skips back about ten seconds and starts again. And it is accompanied by tiling. The navigation is slower than the regular DVR. I may go back to the generic DVR until they get the bugs worked out.
McGuireV10 01-12-08, 08:02 AM Since I plan to jump on the Tivo offer as soon as The Powers That Be deign to give me the option, I'm wondering, for those of you that switch back (assuming anybody has actually done it and not just talked about it), how quickly do they get the old software pushed out to you? Just curious.
Although now that I'm thinking about it, that probably depends a lot on your local Comcast office.
I find it incredible that I'm buying digital broadband from them, but I'm going to have a run a friggin phone line to my cable box again. I just pulled the phone line out of my AV closet that was running to my Tivo. I assumed the new stuff would just go over IP. Just amazing.
You don't need a phone line to the Comcast TiVO. And after a couple of days I'm thrilled with it :D I've had absolutely no issues. The only thing I miss is the 30 second skip. And I figure they will get that going in time.
GO PATRIOTS !!!!!!!!!!

Great question. I'll probably be wondering the same thing if Day Two of the installation ordeal is better than Day One and I actually get the "upgrade."
Anyway, I don't know if they can make your box revert remotely, but you could probably just exchange at a local office if you don't have anything you need to see on the box you would be giving up. Not convenient, but we are talking about Comcast.
PaulHikeS2 01-12-08, 08:38 AM You don't need a phone line to the Comcast TiVO. And after a couple of days I'm thrilled with it :D I've had absolutely no issues. The only thing I miss is the 30 second skip. And I figure they will get that going in time.
GO PATRIOTS !!!!!!!!!!
I seriously doubt there will ever be a 30 second skip with the Comcast TiVo software. As I understand it, there are legal issues with Comcast supporting a feature that is designed only to skip commercials due to their relationships with the content providers. Even though the feature exists with the i-Guide software, it is not supported by Comcast in any way; meaning that reps are not trained in how to remap the remotes to unlock the feature. It would have to be a software enhancement requested by Comcast, so if it's not already hidden in the code waiting for one of us to figure it out, my guess is that we won't be seeing it in the future.
This looks like is possibly could whoop Tivo, hands down...

Gemstar (TV Guide) has just made the same sort of deal with Cox. It is simply the latest version of Gemstar’s Passport software for DVRs, which has been in widespread use for some time. Both my son and my brother have Passport software on their DVRs. It’s a lot better than the SARA software that is used on a lot of Scientific Atlanta boxes, including Cox OKC’s, but it isn’t in the same world with TiVo, at least the version used on TiVo's own boxes.
Although the version of the TiVo software currently being rolled out by Comcast is obviously inferior to the version TiVo uses on its own boxes, it is a new product and, I suspect, will keep getting better.

I agree. Keep in mind that Comcast is a stakeholder in several networks. Adding 30-sec skip would be good for the consumers but bad for their business. They surely don't want to have to explain to an advertiser why they just implemented a feature that helps reduce the number of commercials viewed.

This is what I'm rooting for... someone much smarter than me to find it.
therob006 01-12-08, 11:06 AM Just got TIVO downloaded on my Comcast box.
Did you hav a tech out to your home or was it just upgraded over the phone?

Have you ever used a Tivo? The Tivo fast forward was designed to make it easy to skip commercials and the Comcast version has this feature. The only reason I miss the 30 second skip is because I like to use it between plays in football games.

I was able to skip ahead using the tick markers while watching the playback of a basketball game. If this is what replaced the 30 second skip, its odd. After you fastforward and then hit the skip button, it skips 15 minutes and then keeps going. Certainly not as useful the jump back feature when you fast forward and then hit play. IMO this is better then the 30 second skip.
