View Full Version : Insignia NSDVDR1
IEEE1394 06-01-06, 02:23 PM On the shelf at Best Buy (yesterday) there was an Insignia model NSDVDR1 dvd recorder.
This machine has some notable similarities to the LG LRA516.
Both have cases of about the same size and shape.
Both have the same rear-bezel layouts with the follwing connections:
Inputs: composite video and L/R analog audio.
Outputs: composite video, S-Video, component video, L/R analog audio, coaxial digital audio, and optical digital audio.
Both also have a small plastic box, about two inches on each side and extending outward about an inch from the back of the rear bezel. The plastic box has ventilation slits for the fan.
The LG unit was manufactured early 2005 in China and the Insignia unit was manufactured in China in early 2006.
The Insignia Web site has nothing on this player at the moment (the link for "dvd recorder" from the index page brings a "will update" page). Dogpile brings up nothing for the model number.
I'll look for more details the next time I'm at Best Buy and if anybody knows anything about this player, please post.
SiliconValley 06-12-06, 02:26 AM I bought the Insignia NSDVDR1 today. Works great so far. Plays all my old DVD's burned from my PC and I noticed after I burned my first DVD the default title when looking at the drive in WIN XP it was"LG_COMBI_RECORDER". I'm happy cause I have had very good luck with LG.

cman777 06-12-06, 12:20 PM I have this model too but am having trouble recording. I'm a satellite user and need to know if there is a special setting I missed
Mark Out 06-13-06, 12:12 PM I'm having major problems with this DVD recorder.
I bought one on Saturday and have been using it with absolutely no problems. Three days later it's become unusable.
I've recorded with 2 DVD+R discs today and they stopped recording aroung seven seconds in. They then finalize themselves and becomes unusable. I then had the bright idea of recording on a DVD+RW. Thought I'd use it to experiment because they can be wiped. Same problem. I had to take the DVD+RW and wipe it on my computer to try it again. Everytime I hit record it just refused to record.
Any suggestions anyone? If not I guess Best Buy can expect me in a couple of days with an Insignia NSDVDR1 DVD recorder under my arm.
SiliconValley 06-14-06, 02:20 AM I have had no problems so far but it has only been 2 days. Also I have only recorded DVD-R and DVD-RW. Very good quality recordings and very easy to use.
Mark Out 06-14-06, 12:27 PM My problem is that I've not been able to record a lot of satellite channels with it (premium movie packages in particular. It seems to lock the whole system up. I've been recording on DVD+Rs. Would you recommend the DVD-R/RWs instead SiliconValley? Does that make a difference?
MINDMUSI 08-07-06, 06:04 PM I just purchased the Insignia ns-dvd r1, finally got it to work with my Directv R system. I can play the recorded movie on the INSIGNIA recorder but it will not play on my computer or other DVD players. I read that I had to "finalize" the dvd, but this option is grayed out when I record on DVD-R. The finalize option only enables when I have a DVD R/W disk in the INSIGNIA recorder. So does that mean if I want to finalize a movie I have to use a DVD R/W?
captnemo 08-07-06, 08:57 PM does this recorder record a widescreen 16.9 broadcast on dvd+rw or dvd-rw discs
I picked one up today from Best Buy because it's on sale. Apparently we're not supposed to post anything but MSRP's but I'll say it was a good price AND came with a $10 gift card.
It's a solid recorder and a really good unit compared to Cyberhome and Liteon's in this price range.
As others have said it is manufactured by LG Electronics for Best Buy (Insignia is their house brand name).
Check it out for a good deal this week!
I'm thinking of maybe getting this recorder and just wondering for those of you who've gotten it how it's working out. Also, for those of you who have premium channels, does it let you record them? Thanks.

Ditto- I am still amazed at Best Buy's price on the 47 Westinghouse. Scheduled for delivery next week.
BIGGY44 11-30-06, 01:25 PM Going to go pick this one up since it was free with a TV purchase from Best Buy. Whatever it is...can't beat free. Worst case I can sell it.
twinrick2 12-03-06, 03:35 PM I believe these are now on clearance at Best Buy. I got one for about $35 off list. Plus it was an Open Box item and they gave me a free $40 Gift Card. I think the Gift Card amount was a mistake, as another one only had a $9.00 Gift Card. I have had it two days and so far it is working OK.
My NS-DVDR1 has stopped functioning. When I press the power button, "Welcome" scrolls on the display continuously. I can't get beyond that message. Tray won't open, disc can't be read or played. I don't have the receipt so I'm out about $80 I guess.
